Greetings Brothers and Friends, Another edition of the new electronic format Eta Update is here! In this issue you will find a recruitment report from the chapter, additional details about the Spring Alumni Weekend, and a report on the state of fraternal housing at Miami University. We hope you enjoy!

Recruitment Report - 21 New Associate Members! By Alex McGauley, #249 - Historian Rush was held the first week of the spring semester and approximately 55 men came through Eta Upsilon’s doors. About 32 were given bids, with 21 accepting, making the Omega class the biggest class since the Founding Fathers. Thus, Eta Upsilon is currently 73 members strong, with about eight seniors scheduled to graduate in May. The Omega class is well into their associate period, sub-rituals, and serenades. They’re singing Phil Collins’ “You’ll be in my Heart;” Billy Joel’s “For the Longest Time;” and BBMac’s “Back Here.” In older news, we have five members planning on doing Push America summer events. Three are riding across the country in the Journey of Hope and two others are participating in Build America. Our current Executive Council is Archon: James Sharpe (sharpe@muohio.edu), Vice Archon: Alex Harkess (harkesae@muohio.edu), Treasurer: Ken Valuska (valuskkm@muohio.edu), Warden: Zach Heimach (heimacwz@muohio.edu), Secretary: Tim Hake (hakets@muohio.edu), Chaplain: Michael Cain (cainmj@muohio.edu), Historian: Alex McGauley (mcgaulap@muohio.edu), and Push Executive Officer: Tom Evans (evansth@muohio.edu). State of Fraternal Housing - Miami University By Brandon Tudor, #81 - Eta Upsilon Housing Corporation President Miami University, with 27 fraternities and 23 sororities, is profoundly impacted by its Greek community. As with many traditionally Greek campuses, Miami boasts a large number of fraternity houses. These range from smaller, residential styled houses to large, dormitory styled houses. Occupancy of these fraternity houses starts with fewer than 20 persons and tops out at over 50. Throughout the town of Oxford there are 21 fraternity houses, which are primarily located on Campus Avenue, Tallawanda Avenue, and the surrounding areas. In addition to providing housing for a number of members, these fraternity houses also become a meeting place for members as well as a public image for the fraternity. Did you know the following facts about Pi Kappa Phi’s current housing arrangement? *The Eta Upsilon Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi moved into 111 East Spring Street during the 1996-1997 academic year. *Currently, Eta Upsilon Housing Corporation pays $86,000 annually for rent, in addition to operating costs for the property. *During the 2010-2011 academic year, this annual rent will increase to $109,000. *In 2005, 111 East Spring Street was placed on the housing market for $800,000. *In 2007, 111 East Spring Street was placed on the housing market for $1,000,000. *The Eta Upsilon Housing Corporation has a lease agreement with Oxford Real Estate for 111 East Spring Street through 2015. *The maximum occupancy of 111 East Spring Street is 26 persons. These are unique times for fraternal housing at Miami University. In the past several years, very few fraternity houses have been for sale. This includes 111 East Spring Street and the former Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity house on Bishop Street, which has been placed on the market for $1M and is currently under contract. Also, the Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity house on Campus Avenue has been vacated due to a recolonization effort by the chapter, opening the house for a short term rental. Other fraternities are rumored to possibly be placing their houses up for rent or sale in the near future. As noted in the last Eta Update, the Eta Upsilon Housing Corporation has recently formed The Founders Commission, which has been charged with developing and implementing a strategy for addressing Eta Upsilon’s future housing needs. Chaired by Greg Grilliot, founding Archon and initiate number two, The Founders Commission is holding regular teleconferences and plans to meet during the Spring Alumni Weekend in April. With the fraternal community at Miami University being one which is extremely housing intensive, the work of the Commission will be vital for the future success of Eta Upsilon.
