BUILT ON A FOUNDATION OF LEADERSHIP

Our student leaders delivered on their campuses this past fall. Since August, Pi Kappa Phi chapters have excelled in recruitment, achieving near pre-pandemic results, and membership is on the rise. Chapters are re-committing themselves to service and philanthropy through engagement with The Ability Experience. An example of this commitment is Alpha Iota (Auburn), who set a War of Roses record in chapter fundraising with more than $75,000 benefiting The Ability Experience. Pi Kappa Phi was built on a foundation of leadership. We are hearing from our campus partners that an

At National Headquarters, we are reimagining our educational programs and leadership initiatives. 57th Supreme Chapter

57th Supreme Chapter

We are all familiar with the old phrase, “absence makes the heart grow fonder.” The past few years have been defined by absence, which made the opportunity to come together in person for the 57th Supreme Chapter a truly special experience. Tampa, Florida, provided quite a venue for Pi Kappa Phi’s biggest event. The feeling of brotherhood spread across the JW Marriot and Marriott Water Street hotels during the last week of July 2022. Some of the men hadn’t interacted since the last in-person Supreme Chapter in Chicago in 2018. It was time for chapter brothers to reconnect and make new, lifelong connections.

Known for its lush parks and stunning sidewalks, Tampa provided many opportunities for attendees to enjoy the local flavor. The gigantic Florida Aquarium provided a mesmerizing backdrop for an evening of food and camaraderie while gazing at underwater creatures.

The 57th Supreme Chapter served as the official retirement for Mark E. Timmes, Alpha Epsilon (Florida), Pi Kappa Phi’s chief executive officer for the past 28 years. In bittersweet fashion, the end of his tenure created mixed emotions in Gator country as

many of his Alpha Epsilon brothers were in attendance to honor Timmes. A special tribute and some comedic relief was shared through a series of videos called "Timmes Timeouts" where members and friends of the Fraternity told their best Timmes' stories.

The end of one era means the beginning of another as Jake Henderson, Beta Theta (Arizona), officially took over as Pi Kappa Phi’s ninth chief executive officer. In an address to the membership, Henderson discussed the future, the impact of fraternity and thanked Timmes for his decades of service.

In addition to the many celebrations, new legislation was enacted, the 2022-24 National Council was elected and sworn in and we recognized several members for their outstanding accomplishments. Over the course of just a few short days, brothers from around the country were reminded of just how special this event is and that Pi Kappa Phi is truly for brothers at every level of membership.

The 58th Supreme Chapter will be held July 24-28, 2024, in Baltimore, Maryland.

FRATERNITIES MATTER FRATERNITIES MATTER

We all know the positive impact that Pi Kappa Phi has had on our lives. From lifelong friendships to professional preparedness and developing us as leaders to fostering a mindset for service, Pi Kappa Phi helped make us who we are today.

We know that. But recent research on fraternities has actually proven the impact Pi Kappa Phi and fraternities have on men in college and throughout their lives.

Research proves that fraternities foster positive mental health, serve as an accelerator for success and engender tremendous loyalty and connection to their campus, community and brothers.

Here are three key takeaways from a collection of independent studies on fraternities.

1. Fraternity members experience stronger mental health and wellness.

College men are experiencing loneliness and depression at increasing rates, and fraternities empower students to create a strong support system. Research shows that this connection can create a strong sense of belonging, leading members to have more positive mental health and less anxiety and depression than other students. Brothers feel comfortable having tough conversations and learning from each other, and when they seek help, members are twice as likely to reach out to a fraternity brother than anyone else.

"When you are in college, you start out alone. In the Fraternity, I have found a sense of belonging and community that has provided me the support that was missing from my collegiate experience," shared Ocean Willow, Kappa Delta (FAU). "I have seen the power of brotherhood and community support my brothers in countless ways."

2. Fraternities are an accelerator for success in college and beyond.

Students spend 90% of their time outside the classroom. Fraternities capitalize on those hours by preparing men for success in college and in their futures far beyond what their peers experience. A study of thousands of alumni of diverse backgrounds shows this holds true regardless of an individual’s background or socioeconomic status entering college.

Because of higher expectations, as well as the support and network fraternities provide, members experience greater gains in learning and graduate at higher rates than their peers. Eighty-three percent of members say their confidence in their leadership skills increased because of their membership. Fraternity members also report higher levels of interaction with people different from themselves, lending them to be more prepared than their peers to join a diverse workforce and community.

"My time with the fraternity has made me a more well-rounded person. I’ve had plentiful leadership opportunities through serving two terms on my chapter’s Executive Council, where I was both historian

10 || FALL 2022

Studies prove fraternity men are: my social skills and has generated relationships and connections with Mizzou students, faculty, alumni and Pi Kappa Phi alumni, that I attribute entirely to my involvement within the fraternity."

3. Fraternities create lifelong connection to the campus, community and their peers.

Fraternity men love their collegiate experience – as students and as alumni. In fact, more than eight out of 10 fraternity members say they would rejoin their organizations. Research shows fraternity membership connects men to the university in a way that nonmembers simply don’t experience. They’re more satisfied as students and as alumni are more likely to recommend and give back to their alma maters.

Members are more engaged inside and outside of the classroom than their peers – they report feeling more supported by their faculty, and nearly half serve in leadership roles across campus. They’re also more connected to their local communities, with research showing they spend significantly more time volunteering than non-affiliated students.

“When I joined Pi Kappa Phi, my chapter always made sure I had everything I needed to succeed, whether that was having brothers help me study or giving me opportunities to lead. Those friendships have lasted even longer than I expected,” shared Michael Harvey, Kappa Eta (SUNY - Geneseo). “The best advice I’ve passed down to future generations is to join Pi Kappa Phi and take on leadership. With more leadership and more responsibility, you become a better brother. You become a better person. You

3x more likely to obtain an internship while in college

Almost 2x as likely to have a job waiting for them when they graduate

2x as likely to encourage others to attend their alma mater

5x as likely to give back finacially to their alma mater

Almost 5x as likely to be satisfied with their lives as alums

“Being awarded the Dr. Phillip M. Summers Student of Year is an honor of a lifetime. I am humbled to be mentioned alongside so many men who came before me. Pi Kappa Phi has given me more than I could ever repay. It has given me lifelong friends, my greatest memories and experiences that allowed me to grow into the man I am today. I am thankful every day to be a Pi Kapp, and I look forward to seeing the next group of student leaders that take our organization to the next level.”

ANDREW BREASURE

HENRY Tsekerides TOM ZIMMERMAN

HOWARD H. BAKER LEADERSHIP

AWARD recognizes the student member of Pi Kappa Phi with the most outstanding leadership and involvement in campus and community organizations independent of his chapter.

“I am incredibly proud and honored to be nationally recognized for my leadership ability, both through my work with the Mu Chapter and organizations I am involved with on campus.”

Henry Tsekerides’ leadership has extended far beyond Mu Chapter in Durham. He was able to hold members of his chapter accountable and give them the opportunity to have incredibly open and honest conversations about the changing dynamics of Greek life at Duke. Tsekerides committed himself to communicating with key stakeholders to help address concerns facing the Greek life community at the university. At Duke, he was also part of an organization that helped mentor first-semester freshmen students.

Tsekerides was also awarded Outstanding Archon of the Year in 2021 and was a member of the Duke Marching Band.

MARK E. TIMMES INTERFRATERNAL LEADER OF THE

YEAR recognizes the undergraduate member who demonstrates the most outstanding leadership as an Interfraternity Council member.

“It felt great to be recognized for the work I have done as a member of the Interfraternity Council at Indiana University and be alongside some of my brothers from Alpha Psi Chapter. During my term as the head of membership development, I oversaw all new and current member activities, programs and involvement and completely amended the new member program to make it more applicable to the issues we face as a community today. I could not be more thankful for this opportunity and recognition provided to me by Pi Kappa Phi, and look forward to mentoring and inspiring those younger than me to continue the great work we have done as a chapter.”

Tom Zimmerman, Alpha Psi (Indiana), served the Interfraternal Council as vice president of membership development and served as a judge on the Fraternity and Sorority Life Judicial Board. While serving as vice president of membership development, he took the initiative to rewrite the member education programs for Indiana University. He led multiple meetings with chapter presidents, heads of Greek life and deans of different divisions in the university. This led to him presenting his work and new program to the dean of students, a structure that all chapters now follow. Zimmerman is a Hutton Honors College student, Founders Scholar and a member of the university’s Wealth Management Competition Team.

Mr. Pi Kappa Phi Mr. Pi Kappa Phi

Every year, Pi Kappa Phi names a brother to be given the highest and most prestigious honor of the fraternity: Mr. Pi Kappa Phi.

This year, the fraternity is honoring two men as Mr. Pi Kappa Phi.

MARK E. TIMMES

Mark E. Timmes, Alpha Epsilon (Florida), began his career of service to Pi Kappa Phi and the interfraternal community during his time as a student, helping his chapter grow from 16 men to nearly 100 and serving as Archon, treasurer and rush chairman, as well as Interfraternity Council president. In 1979 he was named national Student of the Year, and the University of Florida inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 1980.

As an alumnus, he started his career path at Pi Kappa Phi National Headquarters serving as director of communications from 1979 to 1981. He decided to further his academic career and continued serving the Fraternity while in law school at the University of Florida as president of the Alpha Epsilon Chapter Housing Corporation. He returned to the National Headquarters staff in 1994 as the staff attorney and the Fraternity’s eighth executive director (which became chief executive officer in 1995). He served as the CEO of the Fraternity, Pi Kappa Phi Properties and the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation until 2022 and as chief executive officer of Push America, now known as The Ability Experience, from 1994 to 2004. He has been recognized for his interfraternal leadership with the Fraternity Executives Association Distinguished Service Award (2022), FarmHouse Fraternity Rick Barnes Interfraternalism Award (2022), NIC Gold Medal (2021), the Southeastern Interfraternity Conference Durward W. Owen Interfraternal Service Award (2018) and the Fraternity Communications Association’s Eric C. Varner, Jr. Fraternal Communications Award (2017).

The impact of Brother Timmes’ loyalty, experience and wisdom will have lasting effects on our brotherhood. He has been integral in bringing our brotherhood into the 21st century.

A Heartfelt Thanks

I could not have imagined a better send-off as CEO after more than 28 years than to have so many of you there in person (or in spirit) in my hometown of Tampa. From the “MET” letters in lights, video remembrances, engraved box of letters, roasts throughout, Lorrie’s jeweled Pi Kappa Phi lavalier, my special badge and of course, the Mr. Pi Kappa Phi designation. I was thrilled to see my son John Patrick become a brother as an alumni initiate. The work of the staff and key volunteers in the planning of my retirement was extraordinary and noted.

Please know how thankful Lorrie and I are for each of you. It has been an honor and privilege to serve.

Yours in Pi Kappa Phi,

100 YEARS OF PSI 100 YEARS OF PSI

Psi Chapter at Cornell University celebrated 100 years of brotherhood in November 2021. Like so many events around the country, COVID-19 postponed the chapter’s celebration until August 2022, when 180 brothers, family and friends attended Psi Chapter’s Centennial in Ithaca, New York.

Pi Kappa Phi National President James Smith and Chief Executive Officer Jake Henderson attended the event. They presented the chapter with a special centennial gift, framed original pages from the February 1922 Star & Lamp where Psi Chapter is first mentioned as part of the National Fraternity. Psi Chapter, which started out as Komos Fraternity in 1916, ultimately became part of Pi Kappa Phi in 1921. The issue included writing from Leonard Stock (class of 1918) describing the formation of the Komos Fraternity. Psi alumnus John Kirk presented the chapter with a 100-yearold gift, a chest of historical Psi memorabilia, including physical handwritten meeting notes from the first Psi Chapter meeting in 1921.

While Psi Chapter celebrated many accomplishments, they took time to fondly remember the Pi Kappa Phi

brothers that had gone before them. Many recalled William “Bill” Newell, who recently passed away. Bill was instrumental in supporting both Psi Chapter and the National Fraternity over many years. The Psi Chapter Alumni Corporation is currently pursuing an effort to rename the Great Hall within the home as the Bill Newell Great Hall in honor of Bill’s lifelong devotion to the Fraternity. No doubt Bill’s memory and spirit were among those who attended the event.

Throughout Psi’s history, there have been a few key residences the chapter has called home. Most notably, the former chapter house at 722 University Avenue, which the chapter moved into in 1949 and occupied through the 1980s, was torn down in 2017 by Cornell University. The alumni were able to gather at the present-day chapter house, which was acquired in 1991. Known in local Ithaca history and to Psi Chapter as “Greentrees,” the alumni were glad to return home to their 1913 historic property. All in attendance experienced the memories and impact of the chapter over the last century and look forward to watching Psi continue its legacy of leadership in the century ahead.

"I support the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation because I believe in the work that our volunteers and staff are doing to impact the lives of young men across the country. The most important part of my student experience was the support I received from my brothers to succeed in the way I wanted to succeed. Whether it was in sports, student activities, chapter leadership or philanthropy, everyone plays a role in the chapter’s success, and everyone can do something to push their chapter closer to the ideal chapter."

THE ABILITY EXPERIENCE

PIKAPP.ORG /NEWS 28 || FALL 2022

"I had not seen most of my ‘92 and ‘93 teammates in thirty years. The Ride Along was a chance to reconnect and rekindle amazing friendships. It was also a strong reminder of the purpose of the Journey of Hope - and how much I learned and grew personally through friendship visits so many years ago."

Every five years something magical happens, and 2022 did not disappoint. The Pi Alpha Ride Along team in the summer of 2022 celebrated the 45th anniversary of shared experiences with more than 35 years of team member experience and dedication. Each Ride Along event is designed around reconnection and adventure to support the mission of The Ability Experience in creating shared experiences between the men of Pi Kappa Phi and people with disabilities. Sixty-eight alumni answered the call to cycle 175 miles from Richmond, Virginia, to Washington, D.C., from August 10-13, 2022.

Together, these men raised a record-breaking $230,000 for the mission and cycled a combined 10,384 miles. There was representation from Pi Alphas dating back to the 1988 ride. Several proudly wore their original Journey of Hope jerseys dating back to their college days!

Team member Dan Dawson, Delta Sigma (Bowling Green), signed up to cycle the Ride Along with his two teenage sons, Jack and Chris.

"The Ride Along surpassed everything I was hoping it

would be," shared Dawson. "My boys both truly loved it – and now the seed of service and philanthropy has been planted."

Corey Dillon, Zeta Phi (Colorado State), was part of the Ride Along team this summer and, as an involved and passionate volunteer, was asked to share a few words at the celebration dinner the night before the arrival about the power of Journey of Hope then and now. "Savor it. This is an example of why we talk about what it means to be a brother for life. It doesn't matter where you came from, what chapter you're from … all of us share something in common," he said. Many memories, smiles and tears were shared between this Ride Along team, leading them each to recommit to supporting the next 45 years of shared experiences through The Ability Experience and Pi Kappa Phi. This was truly a Ride Along like no other!

Chad Coltrane, Epsilon Iota (UNC - Greensboro), Pi Alpha and former chief executive officer of The Ability Experience, cycled and was honored in a very special way by the Ride Along team the night before the Journey of Hope Arrival. Several Pi Alphas and past national president William Sigmon, Alpha Sigma (Tennessee),

recalled how Coltrane impacted their lives. During the celebration dinner, Coltrane was applauded by every Pi Alpha in the room. More than $30,000 was raised on the spot honoring Coltrane's legacy and tremendous leadership over the years while also supporting the Tirado and Porterfield Memorial funds.

"This thing is much bigger than me, and it's much bigger than all of us. The Ability Experience won tonight – and more importantly, the families of Todd Porterfield and Jason Tirado won tonight,” said Coltrane. “It's been 22 years since we lost them, and it means more to their parents to know that they have not been forgotten – that what we've done tonight will spread their names and legacy to every organization every year – and

that's a HUGE impact."

Thanks to the amazing support of our alumni, Pi Alphas, friends and family for helping this anniversary Ride Along raise an unprecedented amount. Thanks to you, the memories of Jason Tirado and Todd Portfield will always be honored by The Ability Experience family.

EQUAL BIG CONNECTIONS

Small communities EQUAL BIG CONNECTIONS

32 || FALL 2022 PIKAPP.ORG /NEWS

Even a big city like Dallas can feel small. Whether you're in a small town, or on a campus with a small town feel, you might notice some of the same trends. Finding new ways to promote brotherhood and bonding can be a challenge for a chapter of any size, particularly on a campus with a small Greek community. But with any challenge comes opportunity.

Iota Xi Chapter at the University of Texas at Dallas has shown an exemplary ability to recruit the next leaders of Pi Kappa Phi. They have established a consistent pattern of large recruiting classes and success over the years. Current Vice Archon Ashton Bennett and Archon Will Jones share the experiences that have led to unbreakable bonds in their chapter. Recruitment at the University of Texas at Dallas has been described as a unique experience due to the size of the community, which allows for more creativity in building connections. “Unlike big state schools, Greek life here is small, and most students are unaware of what Greek life is like,” commented Jones. It becomes the chapter’s job to demonstrate what makes the fraternity special. One of the underrated keys to success for Iota Xi has been utilizing a recruitment committee. This group approach allows for several minds to come together and find quality potential new members. “My recruitment efforts started in the summer. My team and I would look through Instagram and allow students to post an introduction,”

shared Bennett. This approach creates an opportunity to learn more about the people who want to join the organization. Including recruitment booths with informative boards showcasing Pi Kappa Phi's core values and benefits has played a pivotal role in highlighting the ideal chapter that Iota Xi strives to create. Bennett tries to ensure that everyone is involved in the recruitment process. This gives plenty of brothers the opportunity to share their fraternal experiences.

Jones gave us the positive side of recruitment on a campus with a small Greek community. “You have a smaller selection of potential members, but it can help build a better collection of quality individuals.” This allows students to build strong connections that become lifelong.

Bennett stated, “It is much harder to find men wanting to rush a fraternity on a campus like ours. It also takes a lot more convincing. In larger

communities, most students who rush know exactly what they are getting themselves into and in most cases, they just come to the events.” Bennett is committed to connecting with the right, interested individuals. His team reaches out to every potential new member to check in before events and continue to establish proper rapport.

Iota Xi places a premium on being their true authentic selves and providing genuine connection to interested students. This allows brothers to establish connections beyond interest in the fraternity. “We give students the chance to be themselves and not just talk fraternity,” Jones said.

The advice shared by Iota Xi can be adjusted to fit chapters of all sizes that want to better engage with potential members. Their commitment to a quality recruitment strategy has helped add amazing individuals to our organization.

PHINAL THOUGHT

"As we try to ease our way out of the pandemic, events like today's Gear Up Florida Friendship Visit go a long way to bringing back a sense of belonging, togetherness and community. It also reminds us that the young men of Pi Kappa Phi represent the very best values and characteristics we should celebrate –service, selflessness, commitment and love. Thanks everyone, for a fantastic event, and see you next year!"
