CHAPTER REPORT We’re Making the Grade! High Chapter GPA, Strong Philanthropic Push and Strong Fall Rush High Participation from Active Brothers and Alumni Make Homecoming 2007 A Tremendous Success The momentum has continued after an eventful summer in which six brothers participated in National Push America events and the chapter earned a 3.36 GPA. These successes helped pave the way for a successful fall at the Iota Chapter. After a great recruitment, fourteen new associates joined the chapter. Also, Iota continues to be a leader on campus in intramurals, placing in the top five for fraternities. Iota mirrored this success with a successful Homecoming week, placing fourth in the fraternity competition. The week culminated with a pre-game Pig Roast. Over 100 alums and their families returned to the house, continuing the recent trend of well attended alumni events. The chapter has also helped support awareness on campus by teaming up with Blaze Sports for a Push America “Wheel-a-thon.” In addition, brothers participated in the local GAP Weekend. As the semester comes to a close, the brothers are buckling down and preparing for

finals, and are looking forward to continuing to improve the chapter. Spring events will include the development of a SharePoint feature on the website for increased interaction with alumni, traditional events such as the Steak and Beans Dinner, and the first annual Golf Tournament for Push America. While the chapter is very enthusiastic over the accomplishments of this fall, it is excited and focused on the progress sure to be made in the spring!

Get Out Your Golf Clubs, Practice Your Swing and Invite Your Friends to an Alumni Golf Tournament to Support Push America Don’t Miss A Chance to Catch-Up with Brothers The Iota Chapter is proud to be the host of an Alumni Golf Tournament. ALUMNI PRESIDENT REPORT House Improvements Are Underway, Annual Alumni Meeting Voted In Two New Members and Re-elected President, Alumni Spring Golf Tournament Will Be First Class Affair Encouraging All Alumni to Give Back To House by Donating Time or Money By Jimmy Piper, Alumni President

I would like to start off by thanking those of you who turned out for the annual alumni meeting that was held the Sunday after homecoming. It is always nice to see those of you that I don’t see on a regular basis. As part of the proceedings, we conducted officer elections for the positions whose terms had ended. We have two new members on the board. Angelo Panousis is the new secretary, replacing Jon Massey, and Terry Dewberry is the new member-at-large, replacing Craig Hoover. The third position up for election was that of president. I accepted another term in that capacity. I am looking forward to working with Angelo, Terry, and the rest of the board during the upcoming year. For those of you that were able to visit the chapter house during homecoming, you

noticed that the 5th Street improvement work is underway. Access to the house from the front is pretty much cut off and has been a bit of an inconvenience for the chapter. We have told them that the project will not be finished until later on next year. After that, we will be able to benefit from the improvements (additional trees, streetlights, etc.).

“Even if you don’t golf, sign up for the banquet afterwards.” I would like to encourage all the golfers out there to come and join in the inaugural Pi Kappa Phi alumni golf tournament. The chapter has put forth a lot of effort into making this a first class event. It will be a

great opportunity to catch up with old friends while showing off your golf game. Even if you don’t golf, sign up for the banquet afterwards. We would love to see you there. Plus, all proceeds will be donated to our national philanthropy, PUSH. As always, I would like to encourage you to become involved with the Iota alumni group. We are always in need of help. Just because we have a full board, does not mean that you are not needed. You can help in many ways. Some give their time, others their expertise and advice, and others financially support the chapter. If you would like to become more involved, please contact me or anyone else on the board. We would love to hear from you.

UNDERGRADUATE PROFILE Former Chapter Archon and Current Chapter President of American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Will Reed Chapter’s Diversity Is What Drove Reed to Pledge Pi Kappa Phi What is your year, major & hometown? I am a fifth year Chemical Engineering major and Biology minor from South Carolina. When did you join Pi Kappa Phi and why did you choose this fraternity over the other ones at Georgia Tech? I joined Pi Kappa in the fall of my freshman year, 2003. I chose it because I felt it was the one fraternity made up of guys with a variety of interests, but were still very close friends.

“I definitely want to encourage more participation in Build America. Unique to Pi Kappa Phi, BAM was the most enjoyable experience I had throughout college.” What is your favorite thing about Pi Kappa Phi? (Favorite event(s)/time of year/activities to do with the frat?) My favorite thing about the fraternity is the opportunities it can provide. Everyone enjoys different things, so it is always easy to find someone willing to go with you to do

something. It also provides a great network of friends. This is especially helpful for the younger brothers. Knowing a lot of older guys certainly helped me throughout college when I needed advice or wanted to get involved in an organization. Do you hold a specific position? Are you on the officer/executive board? If not, would you want to be and why? I do not currently hold a position in the fraternity, but I was historian for a year and I was the previous Archon (president). Do you plan on staying involved with Pi Kappa Phi as an alumnus? I will probably not make it back to Atlanta very often, but I plan to stay in touch with all the guys I have met over the years. I would love to help not only the Iota chapter, but also other Pi Kapps whenever I can. I definitely want to encourage more participation in Build America. Unique to Pi Kappa Phi, BAM was the most enjoyable experience I had throughout college. Are you involved in any other extracurricular activities or clubs? If so,

what are they? Currently, my main involvement is with the student chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). I am in my second year as president of the organization. What are your career goals? I am in the process of applying to medical schools with the hopes of becoming a surgeon when I finish school.

ALUMNI TREASURER REPORT Alumni Support Is Appreciated: Mold, Leaks, and Aging House Create a Strain on Budget House Maintenance Results In a Student Rent Increase By Jerry Stamey, Treasurer (jerry@monetconsulting.com)

The Iota Alumni of Pi Kappa Phi ended their fiscal year on August 31, 2007. We ended the year barely in the black. The house lost multiple air conditioning units this summer. The house also incurred a major leak in the upstairs shower, which resulted in demolishing and rebuilding the shower. Finally, there were

“The house lost multiple air conditioning units this summer.” some ventilation problems in the downstairs The Iotan

bathroom which required the services of a mold removal company. Due to the projected need for more improvement/repair projects to the house, the alumni board voted to increase the house rent by 10%. The student’s rent amount is still below current Georgia Tech housing rates. The board may also consider another small increase during our summer meeting. It is unfortunate to have to increase student rent, but we need to consider both maintaining a house that is over 10 years old and paying the mortgage. I have great hope that this small

increase will benefit the house greatly. We are currently exploring some major cabinetry work and redoing another shower during summer 2008. Any donation, large or small, that Alumni could make to the Iota Alumni Board would be greatly appreciated. Donations to the Annual Fund, of any amount, can be sent to the following address: The Iota Alumni of Pi Kappa Phi 1425 Market Blvd, Ste 330-73 Roswell, GA 30076 3

GPA Is On the Rise, Scholarship Programs Being Considered, Time Management Course Given to Associate Members The scholarship committee has become increasingly more important. This is due in large part to the efforts of Dr. Anderson, our new academic coach. Thanks to him, struggling brothers are given more encouragement and aid to improve their study habits. This semester, the chapter implemented a “Collegiate Success Program.” All associate members attended. Time management skills were emphasized during the three hour session designated to help them acclimate to the rigorous nature of Georgia Tech academics. Because of Dr. Anderson’s assistance, the fraternity has been able to apply for an IFC scholarship through “The Most Improved Scholarship Program.” The house may receive a $1,000 scholarship, which could potentially be used to either improve the house’s study room or award brothers who consistently achieve high grades. For some time now, the Scholarship Committee has wanted to offer more incentives rather than penalties. Therefore, this scholarship has the potential to make the “Scholastic Standards Program” grow by leaps and bounds in the coming semesters. Finally, this committee is exploring new ideas to encourage the continued success of the house’s campus rank, which improved from Fall 2006 to Spring 2007.

Rush Numbers on Campus May Be Low, But We Can Boast 15 in Our Fall Pledge Class Strategies for Spring ’08 Are Already Being Discussed and Carried-Out Fall 2007 Rush was slow for all of the fraternities on campus. Despite this, the Iota Chapter gained 15 pledges. (Last year, we had a very strong spring rush with seven pledges.) To continue that trend, we are already beginning to work on next semester’s spring rush. Many men that went through fall rush but decided not to pledge have been invited back to events and parties and are expected to rush again in the spring. In addition to this, our current pledge class has been told to socialize with other freshman in their dorms. We suggested to them that anyone whom they could see as a potential Pi Kapp should be invited to events we host and that they should sell them on Greek life before trying to completely sell them to Pi Kappa Phi. With the shortage of rushees in the fall, we are hoping to see a larger spring rush. We look to match or outperform last spring’s class of seven.
