Bound Together in Common Loyalty Omicron Needs Your Support Today

T

he fundraising efforts were successful, but the Campaign Committee found that lack of post-graduation connection was our biggest obstacle. Consequently, the Campaign Committee decided to organize an entity to facilitate alumni contact, Omicron Alumni Organization. The purpose of OAO is to facilitate connection between alumni, assist the Omicron Club, recognize graduates, and mentor graduates. Omicron Alumni Organization held its first meeting at the Chapter House prior to the Arkansas State game. The first project was to encourage alumni game day Chapter House visits by ensuring that Chapter members identified each alumnus and welcomed him. Every alumnus received an OAO name tag facilitating recognition in the Chapter House. Additionally, we also obtained correct cell numbers and email addresses to facilitate future communications. This contact information is essential to effective communication from OAO. With the encouragement of the Archon and Historian, the undergraduates made the alumni feel comfortable and welcome on game days. Based on the success we had, this effort will continue next year for every home game. The OAO communications plan utilizes group cell phone and email releases, in addition to Facebook postings. A number of alumni have received these communications, but our efforts for accurate cell phone and email information will make this form of communication much more effective. A number of alumni have volunteered to lead particular efforts. Brothers who volunteered are listed as indicated, but additional help is necessary. Please contact any of the alumni listed to volunteer for any activity. We need all the help we can get. ORGANIZING LOCAL SOCIAL ACTIVITIES AND CONNECTION IN CITIES WITH A NUMBER OF ALUMNI. The alumni group has designated the Historian as the officer to assist OAO. The Chapter is going to keep the alumni list with current information and will have it available for alumni. Since the list can be sorted by zip code, it is easy to find alumni geographically near each other. It can also be sorted by initiation dates, encouraging contact with brothers from your era. BROTHERHOOD NEVER FADES Alumni Reunite for Alabama vs. Tennessee Game

O

n October 20, Omicron alumni from the 1970s to 2000s and even a former little sister descended on the house of Karen and Jimmy May ’71 to cheer on Alabama as they took on Tennessee. The group met for lunch on Friday, October 19, at Wintzels, then dinner at the Bluegill. However, the main event was Saturday as we watched the Crimson Tide take victory over the Tennessee Volunteers.

Serving Up Success

How Justin Holt ’98 Is Influenced by Omicron Teachings

W

hile Justin Holt ’98 is no stranger to proper table manners and service, it was the discovery of a forgotten Omicron treasure that reignited his passion and solidified his future entrepreneurial path in the restaurant industry. “When we were new members, there was a book that detailed the history of the fraternity, our symbols, and traditions. What I always found interesting was the book described proper dress and table manners, which acted like a guide for college kids to be adults. Many people may not remember this, but it has always stuck with me even in my career.”

“The impact the fraternity and Omicron Chapter has had on me is quite strong,” Justin said. “I have Brothers all over the country and even the world, and I know if I saw them or called any of them, they would pick up the phone and be there.”

Although Justin has moved forward in his life as the proud owner of Dotson’s Burger Spot and Southern Ale House in Tuscaloosa, the teachings of this ΠΚΦ book remain a daily resource. In fact, he frequently refers to etiquette tips from his undergraduate days when training his staff.

COMMON LOYALTY

Yet, Pi Kappa Phi’s teachings are not the only parts of Justin’s experience still prevalent in his life. Exemplifying the core value of loyalty, Brothers have provided a valuable support system throughout life’s ups and downs. “The impact the fraternity and Omicron Chapter has had on me is quite strong,” Justin said. “I have Brothers all over the country and even the world, and I know if I saw them or called any of them, they would pick up the phone and be there.”

Chapter Eternal

Alex W. Oliver ’53 entered Chapter Eternal on March 29, 2017. Robert English Morrell III ’65 entered Chapter Eternal on February 27, 2018, in Atlanta. Lee M. Davis ’76 entered Chapter Eternal on June 2, 2017, at age 60.

LIFELONG COMMITMENT

Knowing this brings back memories of attending his first Supreme Chapter and the first time he fully understood the importance of national and international brotherhood connections. “When I attended Supreme Chapter in St. Louis, we were well thought of from the minute we walked through the door,” Justin said. “You don’t always get the opportunity to see things from a bigger perspective, but attending Supreme Chapter was a neat experience that introduced me to different people and chapters. It helped me recognize early on that I was a part of something much bigger than myself.” Seeing this tradition of excellence carried on today’s active members brings Justin a sense of pride at the reputation Omicron has successfully built and maintained. In order to further this legacy well into their alumni years, Justin advises punctuality, organization, and treating people with respect while possessing a strong work ethic.

CONNECT WITH JUSTIN

While at the University of Alabama, Justin not only learned these valuable lessons and met his lifetime Brothers, he also met his wife, Dana. They reside with their son, Spencer, in Tuscaloosa. If you would like to connect with Justin, he can be reached at holtjs@yahoo.com.

Alumni Update

Edward P. Fowler ’48 entered Chapter Eternal on October 20, 2017, from natural causes.

During Justin’s time as an undergraduate, the Chapter was widely known for its positive reputation and rich history, which it proudly continues today.

Developing Leaders and Encouraging Service

T

Omicron Recognized for Success at Supreme Chapter

his semester, Omicron Chapter has excelled in our increased philanthropic endeavors, updated scholarship plan, and successful recruitment and new member program. We received two awards this summer at Supreme Chapter; one for Chapter Advisor Walt Dendy ’72, and another for the Omicron Club for having the best alumni organization.

Brothers Implement Successful Scholarship Plan

Scholarship Chairman Tanner Sheffield ’16 has worked diligently on his academic program for our newest pledge class. They have been meeting four times a week, with a total of 12 study hours per week. They have attended Get on Board Day, the career fair, and are all taking a mentoring class in addition to having mentors within the Chapter.

Members Lend a Helping Hand

This year, we hosted the Best Buddies and Arts and Autism events. Our cover band, Sunday Night Special, played in Phi Mu’s battle of the bands. We also co-sponsored the B+ Foundation Cookout with ΣΑΕ, Sigma Nu, ΔΚΕ, ΚΔ, and ΚΚΓ, as well as co-sponsor Brews 4 Lou with Phi Delta Theta. We also raised money for the Don Bosco Foundation, which helps children in Africa to receive medical treatment and attend schools.

Omicron Welcomes 35 New Members to the Brotherhood

This fall, we initiated 35 new Brothers. We had a successful new member program, led by Warden Adam Pflaum ’15. Chaplain Scott Urban ’15 also introduced a new Bible study program, led by Campus Outreach. We are looking forward

to seeing our new members grow and positively contribute to Omicron’s legacy.

Chapter Ranks in Top Five for Homecoming

We were paired with ΑΟΠ for Homecoming and achieved second place overall, but first place in athletics. Our new members led our group to success in both dodgeball and basketball as well. We also won the Coca Cola “Block of the Game” for best block seating section in the stadium and are currently undefeated in intramural football.

Thank You, Alumni and Parents

Omicron hosted a parent’s brunch for all new members in order to give parents information about our Chapter, as well as tours of the Chapter House, a breakdown of our dues, and an overview of our accomplishments. During Homecoming weekend, we had Brothers Night Out, including a local cover band, as well as alumni Chapter before the game on Saturday. We were very thankful for the great turnout of alumni at these events. The Chapter is very proud of our accomplishments and would like to thank all alumni for continuing to contribute to our one-of-a-kind Omicron brotherhood. Our members aim to build on this strong foundation. We welcome all alumni and friends to stop by the Chapter House and meet some of the Brothers who are working hard to uphold the ideals of our fraternity.
