MARK E. TIMMES RETIRES

On July 27, 2022, prior to the commencement of the 57th Supreme Chapter in Tampa, Mark E. Timmes, AE 1034 was honored at a retirement ceremony. For over 28 years, Brother Timmes has served as Chief Executive Officer of our National Fraternity. Over 35 AE brothers were in attendance to show their support.

Timmes served as an active brother during his undergraduate years from 1976 until 1979. During this time, Timmes continued our standard of exceptional leaders. He served on the executive board as Archon, Treasurer and Recruitment Chairman. Timmes traveled state-wide to raise money for “old house” improvements. Timmes would start the AE Hall of Fame, serve as AE Housing Corporation and IFC President. He would earn honors as a Pi Kappa Phi scholar, National Student of the Year and AE Brother of the Year. The University of Florida Hall of Famer would also become Co-Outstanding Male Leader and receive the Florida Blue Key.

Mark would serve as Pi Kappa Phi’s CEO and take the fraternity to new heights. During his time as CEO, he would lead the Ability Experience, oversee the growth of both Pi Kapp Properties and the Foundation while helping the fraternity grow to over 260 chapters nationwide. Timmes played an intrical role in the creation of the Kelley A. Bergstrom Leadership Center and established the Eldred J. Hartman Museum. He would serve the North American Interfraternity Conference as Secretary and Treasurer. His impact on the Interfraternal Community Board of Directors and North American Interfraternity Conference would lead to honors in 2021. Mark and his wife, Lorrie look forward to staying busy during his retirement years with plans of remaining involved in Pi Kappa Phi.

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU FOR MAKING all of us at AE PROUD OF YOUR VISION, LEADERSHIP AND COMMITMENT TO OUR FRATERNITY.

Thank you to the Hole Sponsors including Sign-Age of Tampa, Gator Boosters, Cotton & Company, AE Brothers of ’70, Bernie Barton, Hill-Donovan Family Scholarship, Flash Sew and Quilt, RMHalcrow Advisors, 1565 Woodworks, LLC, Paul Enrico, Chuck Riggs Family, Kaye and Dave Cronin, Gainesville Hilton, Sysco Food Service, and Comfort Temp Heating and Air.

This year over 60 golfers participated in this great event, and we are hoping to have 99 golfers for 2023…to honor our 99th year with Pi Kappa Phi. Between the golf registration, mulligans, mulligan raffle, and the chapter raffle, nearly $6,000 was raised for Student Scholarships. By the way, the winner of the Mike White Autographed Basketball now has a highly valuable collector’s item.

We are hoping next year we will be able to pull Mark Timmes out of retirement to participate in this worthwhile event. Be on the look-out for information for the Legends of AE Golf Tournament for 2023.

Legend has it that this was the last time that Mark Timmes played in the Legends of Alpha Epsilon Tournament.

FROM THE ARCHON

Our chapter has seen a great deal of success this year. I am excited to highlight some of our accomplishments for you.

With scholarship being a primary focus, I am proud to report that our current chapter cumulative GPA is 3.42 – which ranks 9th best out of the 25 UF fraternities in the IFC. This academic success extends to co-curricular involvement as well, with brothers staying involved in a range of prestigious organizations on campus—a special shout out to Senior Class President, Brother Jacob Van De Car. In other campus related news, preparations for UF’s ’22 Homecoming Game, slated to be against Missouri are underway. We will be partnering with the lovely ladies of Kappa Alpha Theta for the homecoming week festivities. Other areas of campus involvement include Intramural Sports. Our notable finishes for the chapter have been the Spring 21 IM Softball Champions, 3rd Place in Fall ’21 IM Flag Football and IM Volleyball, 2nd Place in Spring ’22 IM Basketball, and Spring ’22 Flag Football Champions.

We have also seen lots of growth over this past two semesters, with the chapter’s active roster nearing 150 active collegiate members, with supplements from the Fall ’21 class of 39 initiates, and the Spring ’22 class of 11 initiates. With membership on the rise, we have continued to increase our philanthropic efforts.

This past year, we adopted our own road, Pi Kappa Phi Rd., and we clean it up 3 times a semester. Through multiple philanthropy events in 2021, we raised the following amounts for the respective organizations listed below:

$5,000 for the Ability Experience

$1,071 for the Epilepsy Foundation

$1,750 for the National Alliance on Mental Illness

$600 to supplement our wonderful kitchen staff consisting of Chef Marc and Kitchen Assistant Pat.

As for 2022, we focused all our philanthropic efforts towards the Ability Experience--mainly through our large-scale event War of the Roses-and successfully raised over $20,000. This put Alpha Epsilon as the highest fundraising Pi Kapp chapter across the U.S., contributing a quarter of national donations to the Ability Experience.

We have also received recognition from the National Fraternity, receiving numerous awards at Pi Kapp College in Atlanta. (These awards are listed under the “National Awards” section).

AE MENTORSHIP PROGRAM & ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT

To my AE Brothers:

Now that the plans have been set for our Founders Day 2023 Meeting, I thought the following “chance encounter” might be appropriate to share in this column.

We attempted kicking off a new mentorship program earlier this year but discovered we must formalize to achieve a successful program. Not solely focused on connecting mentors and mentees, there is also an organizational effort to leverage alumni engagement opportunities with the active Chapter.

On the second evening of the 57th Supreme Chapter which was held a couple of weeks ago in Tampa, Bob Halcrow (AE 868) and I had grabbed a table in the lounge area of the JW Marriott and were waiting for a number of our fellow alumni to join us, when we were approached by a gentleman who asked if he could borrow a chair. A discussion ensued when he noticed our name badges. He introduced himself as Tom Coley, an alumnus of the Beta Eta at FSU and suggested that even though he was a Nole, maybe he should sit down for a minute as he had a story that he wanted to share with us. As it turned out, our new friend Tom Coley’s wife Dion, is the daughter of Samuel Charles McCormick, AE 17, initiated on February 23, 1924, and of course, a Founding Member of Alpha Epsilon. You will find his brick on the AE Gator Walkway along with each of the Founding Members. A chance encounter that led to a great 30-minute conversation. If all goes as planned, Tom and his wife will be joining us at our Centennial Celebration in February 2024.

My hope is that sharing this story might stimulate those of you who have not had the opportunity to join our ever-growing group this coming February when we celebrate the 99th Anniversary of our chapter and re-engage with old friends you might not have seen in years. I can tell you that it has been a great personal experience for me.

As the lead brick on our walkway states: “Beyond these doors are the friends you never knew you were going to meet”. So there has never been a better time to make those plans.

I have been joined by Craig Morrison and Dale Thompson to create a program to promote knowledge sharing and experience from our alumni with the active Brothers. Our vision will leverage proven, mentoring best practice to manage the program while developing a mechanism to encourage alumni visiting Gainesville to share stories and experiences with the active Chapter.

We had 10 alumni, volunteer to mentor already – we’d like to expand that group to continue to drive AE Greatness! Look for more information over the next few months -- please consider what you could provide for the future success of our active Brothers!

Fraternally, Brad Jensen (AE 1389)

Chairman AE

Each year, the National Fraternity recognizes those individuals throughout the entirety of all chapters that embody the continued commitment to the fraternal values of Pi Kappa Phi, as well as their own distinguished achievements in their careers and community. Alpha Epsilon had one winner that received this prestigious honor. Please join us in congratulating Matthew Wilhelm AE 2460.
