Alumni Spotlight: Mark G. Evans Alumni Weekend Recap Clemson Outdoor Lab Involvement Alumni Chapter
Alumni Spotlight: Mark G. Evans, ZA 02
As a Clemson freshman in the fall of 1980, Mark Evans went through Greek Rush but none of the fraternities stood out as one for him. Through word of mouth and talking to friends around campus he learned that many had the same experience and felt the same way. So he and several others decided to chart a different path. That path led to the formation of the local fraternity Phi Alpha Sigma which became Pi Kappa Phi. Because of this decision, he made lifelong friends with whom he shares many great experiences and memories. After Mark graduated from Clemson in 1984, he moved to Dallas, Texas where he worked for one of Bank of America’s predecessor banks. He relocated to Charlotte, NC in 1991 and retired in 2012 after 25 years. He’s now a Banking Consultant and leads regulatory & compliance projects at the enterprise level. Mark is married to his wife Michale who he met at Clemson, and has three children: Will, who attended Duke, then Georgetown Law School, and is now a Lawyer in Washington D.C.; Melissa, who attended Wellesley College then the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna, Austria. She’s currently working at the Philippine Embassy in Vienna; and Sean, who is a rising senior at Clemson. Mark is also involved in the creation of the Zeta Alpha Alumni Chapter and continues to be a great representation of what a Pi Kappa Phi man should be.

Alumni Weekend Recap
The men of the Zeta Alpha chapter of Pi Kappa Phi hosted their first annual Friends and Family Alumni Day on April 18th, 2015. This is a day that allows alumni of the Zeta Alpha Chapter to come out for a day of brotherhood with enrolled chapter brothers and spend time with family and friends. Keeping in the spirit of the fraternity, the day was filled with camaraderie and celebration.

A tournament of Alumni vs. Students kickball started off the day at the Fike Intramural Fields. The game was followed by a BBQ tailgate under our new tent in preparation for the Clemson vs. Duke baseball game. The day ended with alumni and students celebrating the charter being presented to them from the National Organization, and a 6-2 Tiger win over the Blue Devils. Thank you to all the alumni who came and we hope to see even more at the second annual event this upcoming school year.

Clemson Outdoor Lab Involvement
This past Spring, our brothers were very happy to continue Zeta Alpha’s relationship with the Clemson Outdoor Lab. The Clemson Outdoor Lab hosts many summer camps for kids with disabilities, and Zeta Alpha has worked with them for years. A large group of brothers went early on a Saturday morning to give their day to hard work. We were assigned projects to help the Outdoor Lab get ready for their summer camps in a few weeks. Most projects included landscaping jobs, as well as some brothers building ramps and stairs. All the good people that work at the Outdoor Lab were very happy to see us and thanked us for the hard work. After finishing up and taking group photos, we were told that if there was a few of us in Clemson over the summer, we could find a job there. We are already planning to volunteer at the Lab again and hope to do so more regularly during upcoming semesters.

ALUMNI CHAPTER UPDATES
Reflecting back on almost 30 years of Zeta Alpha’s history, we realized that there was something missing – and that was an Alumni organization. So, building upon the momentum from recent accomplishments, we thought the time was right to create the first ever Alumni Chapter. There are many benefits of having an Alumni Chapter. Of course, the most significant one is a way for brothers to connect and socialize when they are back on-campus. So what have we done and where are we going? First of all, we had a “forming meeting” at Clemson on April 18th, 2015. We discussed our plans and received the requisite signatures from 10 alumni so that we could petition National for formal recognition. We plan to submit that paperwork to them on July 1st 2015. In the meant ime, we have worked diligently to locate our alumni and update our contact information for each. At some point after July 1st and before the beginning of the Fall School term, we plan to use that contact information to kick-off off our membership campaign. We’ll be looking to fill many of the officer positions on our Executive Board and once inplace, these men will plan the calendar of events and activities. At a minimum we are targeting to host an Alumni gathering this Fall at Clemson on a football game weekend. Plus, we would like to start a new tradition each Spring with an Alumni & Undergraduate Chapter event like you were kind enough to setup this April. I’m pretty happy about what we’ve done so far, but even more excited about our future. So again, there will be more information coming soon and hope that our 600+ Zeta Alpha Alumni will embrace this opportunity to be a charter member of our first ever Alumni Chapter for Zeta Alpha. I’m looking forward to it! Mark G. Evans, ZA02
