leadership through investment As Pi Kappa Phi, in its Second Century Vision, seeks to “Redefine Fraternity as a Lifelong Brotherhood of Leaders,” a critical role in ensuring our success is leadership through investment. In this issue of the Star & Lamp, you will find the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation’s Annual Report for 2007, which recognizes those brothers and friends of the fraternity who, through their financial investment in Pi Kappa Phi, support our vision. It is through their philanthropy that the Foundation helps support the educational programs of Pi Kappa Phi. While we recognize that the demands on your philanthropic support continue to increase, let us not forget the importance of your gifts of time, talent and treasure that enable us to positively impact young men’s lives and to enrich the lives of those who work with them throughout the greater fraternity. Another form of investment is in the leadership of your fraternity. The 51st Supreme Chapter will be held in Denver, Colorado, from July 25-29, 2008. It is our biennial convention. During that time all chapters of Pi Kappa Phi are temporarily dissolved and reconvened as the Supreme Chapter. Through the committees and legislative process, Supreme Chapter resolutions and changes in Supreme Law are passed for the good of the order. While there is much work done at the Supreme Chapter, there is much to celebrate as we recognize our students, chapters and alumni for their successes over the last biennium. The Supreme Chapter is unique in that it brings together so many parts of our great fraternity: our student leaders; associate members from associate chapters hoping to earn their charter; volunteers from all levels be it chapter advisors to regional governors and the National Council; the Boards of the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation, Push America and Pi Kappa Phi Properties; and alumni, spouses and friends. A special group within the Supreme Chapter is the Nu Phi Society, which recognizes those brothers who have attended five or more Supreme Chapters. This cadre of men is just another example of those who recognize the importance of leadership through investment by participating in our democratic process at the Supreme Chapter meeting. More information about the 51st Supreme Chapter is available on pages 6 and 7 of this issue and at denver.pikapp.org. We hope you will join us this summer! Lastly, on the back cover of the Star & Lamp is a member recommendation form. As we all learned when we first joined Pi Kappa Phi, recruitment is our lifeblood. It is the never ending stream of men who step forward to join our beloved fraternity that ensures our future. Please take a few moments to recommend a deserving student for consideration, and it will be forwarded to the appropriate chapter. Enjoy this issue of the Star & Lamp! Yours in the brotherhood of Pi Kappa Phi,

Mark E. Timmes Chief Executive Officer mtimmes@pikapp.org

PAGEONE THETA OMICRON  UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA-RENO Reno, Nevada Founding Members: 32 Founded: November 17, 2007 Colonized: Spring 2005 Like many other new colonies, the men of Theta Omicron found it difficult at first to find their niche on campus. After struggling for more than a year, the chapter was faced with an uncertain future. However, the men were determined, and they turned their focus to recruitment, academics and philanthropy. They also became more involved in their community. After twoand-a-half long years, their dedication paid off, and the NevadaReno associate chapter was granted its charter. Teams from Eta Omicron (San Francisco State) and Zeta Mu (Cal State-Northridge) performed the Ritual of Initiation, while National Secretary Tracy Maddux, Zeta Theta (Texas), and National Historian Tom Sullivan, Delta Omega (Texas A&M), presided over the ceremony as the installation officers. Director of Business Affairs Joe Costello, Beta Iota (Toledo), and Leadership Consultant Derek Berger, Beta Xi (Central Michigan), represented the national fraternity.

THETA PI  UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS-TYLER Tyler, Texas Founded: December 1, 2007

Founding Members: 31 Colonized: Spring 2007

Pi Kappa Phi was the first fraternity to colonize at the University of Texas at Tyler. In less than one year, the founding fathers of Theta Pi chapter were able to meet the criteria necessary to receive their charter from the National Council of Pi Kappa Phi. “When we received our charter, it was an outward sign of this chapter’s inward brotherhood,” said Archon Matthew Beavers of the chapter’s efforts. “Everyone came together; not one person could have done it on his own.” Past National Secretary Jim Krucher, Beta Alpha (NJIT), and Regional Governor Dustin Alexander, Eta Rho (Texas State), were the installation officers. Beta Omicron (Northwestern State) and Eta Chi (Texas Christian) performed the Ritual of Initiation. Also in attendance were Director of Chapter Services Brandon Belote, Theta Alpha (Southern Miss), and Leadership Consultants Kyle Robinson, Gamma Iota (LSU), and Derek Berger, Beta Xi (Central Michigan). MARINE CORPS WASHINGTON, OCTOBER 26, a push america challenge event

On October 26, 2008, more than 30,000 runners will converge on Washington, D.C., to complete a 26.2-mile marathon course in our nation’s capital. And Push America is proud to team up with one of America’s premier marathons, the Marine Corps Marathon, for this extraordinary event. As a charity partner of the Marine Corps Marathon, Push America has 25 spots available for marathoners who commit to raising a minimum of $2,000 to benefit the mission of Push America. Our goal is to raise $50,000 through this world-class event while providing a memorable weekend for Push America Challenge team members. Highlights of this family friendly weekend include free registration, fundraising incentives, an online training plan, a pre-race team dinner, access to our exclusive finish line tent, plus we’ll be awarding a grant to the Wounded Warrior Project. The crown jewel of the Push America Challenge in 2008, the Marine Corps Marathon is one of the largest marathons in the country—and one of the most scenic as journeys past national landmarks, monuments and memorials. This a great opportunity to contribute to Push America while challenging yourself to a world‑class marathon. for more info, to volunteer, or to claim your spot, visit www.pushamerica.org/events/mcm or contact director of development basil lyberg at blyberg@pushamerica.org / (704) 504-2400 ext. 125

TWENTY-SIX POINT TWO

by Jeff Perlman

MARATHON D.C.

2008

I first became involved with Push America as a cyclist on Gear Up Florida in 2001. I was a student at the University of Memphis, and like many other Pi Kappa Phis, I was excited about the challenge of cycling 800 miles through Florida—and I thought it was cool that I would be supporting our philanthropy at the same time. But somewhere along the way, something changed. While I certainly tested my physical limits over the course of those two weeks, that part of the challenge had become secondary. I realized I was far more excited about Push America purpose: to advocate on behalf of people with disabilities. After experiencing that defining moment, I would spend my next four summers participating in Gear Up Florida or Journey of Hope—as either a cyclist, crew member or project manager. While I no longer have that undergraduate luxury of spending my summer cycling across the country or crisscrossing Florida, I didn’t want my association with Push America to just end. So I asked myself, “What could I do to stay involved with this organization that has meant so much to me over the years?” I decided to try my hand at the Push America Challenge and joined Push America’s team for the Country Music Marathon in Nashville, Tenn. It was my first marathon, but it was really a no‑brainer. It seemed like a great way to compete in a team event and fundraise for Push America without being overly demanding of my time. The Push America Challenge is unique in the fact that it gives everyone—undergraduates, alumni and even non‑members—the opportunity to participate in events for Push America. Well, the Music City Marathon turned out to be an amazing experience. Sure, there were times—like around miles 18 through 20—when it was difficult to convince my legs to keep moving. But when it became overwhelming, I concentrated on why I was running in the first place. That simple motivation made it easy to cross the finish line. All together, 15 people completed the marathon as part of the Push America Challenge, and I enjoyed it so much that I have decided to complete my second Push America Challenge this October—the Marine Corp Marathon in Washington, D.C.

No Federal or Marine Corps endorsement of advertisers or sponsors is implied.

letter from the chairman Dear Brothers and Friends, As chairman of the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation, I have the privilege of representing your Foundation to hundreds of students who attend one of Pi Kappa Phi’s many leadership training opportunities. Whether it’s Mid Year Leadership Conference, Pi Kapp College or one of our alcohol education programs, it is always an uplifting experience that reminds me of the singular importance Pi Kappa Phi plays in the development of young men. I can unequivocally tell you that the men who lead our chapters represent some of the finest students enrolled at the 140 colleges and universities where Pi Kappa Phi currently operates. They are self-determined and interested in improving themselves and the chapters they lead; and it is the goal of the Foundation to assist them in their overall pursuit of personal and chapter excellence. Why is it important to make such an investment in our student members? Consider just a few statistics about the world that this year’s graduating class will inherit. + Approximately 3 billion people live on less than $2 a day. + 1.6 billion people live without access to electricity. + Nearly 1 billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their name. + 270 million, or one in seven children worldwide, live without access to health care. Today’s college students leave their post-secondary work and enter a world shaped by powerful forces. The world is smaller but more complex. Communicating with someone across the globe is seemingly as easy as speaking with your neighbor; yet paradoxically, the solutions to our shared problems seem as distant as the horizon. So, where does the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation fit into this? We believe that if there ever was a time when the world needed thoughtful, intelligent and motivated young men who understand how to develop a vision, build consensus, rally a diverse group of people to a mission and actively seek solutions, now is the that time. We also believe that Pi Kappa Phi, through the Foundation and its donors like the ones found in this report, play a critical role in the development of programs that build better leaders for tomorrow’s challenges. In last year’s annual report, my predecessor, Allen Woody, Xi (Roanoke), reported on the Foundation’s role as an equity investor in a building that would eventually become Pi Kappa Phi’s new headquarters (see “Home Sweet, Headquarters” Spring 2007). Having moved into the Kelley A. Bergstrom Leadership Center of Pi Kappa Phi last January, this innovative approach to addressing an important need of the greater fraternity has been buttressed by a capital campaign that has raised more than $1.25 million. The goal of $1.5 million is in sight and the special donors who have helped make this happen are recognized on page 11. Through a combination of fundraising efforts (mainly in our restricted fund categories) and modest gains in the market, your Foundation reached a significant milestone in 2007. As of December 31, total assets exceeded $6 million for the first time in the Foundation’s 54-year history. Since 2005 the Foundation’s total assets have increased 32 percent. (See graph on facing page). Related to this, the Foundation launched two significant scholarship programs in 2007. The first is the David Morgan ‘Extra Mile’ Scholars Program, benefiting students of the Beta Omicron chapter at Northwestern State. The second new program is the International Scholars Fund, which provides scholarship grants to talented student leaders interested in pursuing a study abroad experience. The International Scholars Fund replaces the Jack Casper Leadership Society, which ran for several years. Working with Brother Casper and another anonymous donor, the Foundation was able redirect funds toward this important international initiative. And while tremendous work has been done by Foundation volunteers and staff, many opportunities for Pi Kappa Phi still lie ahead. Helping the fraternity prepare our young men to meet tomorrow’s challenges requires a continued investment of new resources. The Foundation has begun to plan for our next campaign to endow our educational programming. You will be hearing more about this initiative in the coming year. Your continued support is making a difference. So, thank you for your generous support in 2007, and I hope we can count on you again in 2008! Yours in Pi Kappa Phi,

Jerry T. Brewer, Chairman

headquarters campaign In January of 2008, Pi Kappa Phi and its three affiliate organizations moved into the newly constructed Kelley A. Bergstrom Leadership Center of Pi Kappa Phi. Located in one of Charlotte’s newest and fastest-growing developments, the greater Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity not only realized its desire for a more efficient and effective venue from which to conduct the business of the fraternity, but also created a first-class facility that dramatically enhances Pi Kappa Phi’s ability to effectuate its leadership mission and meaningfully display its rich history. The Porterfield-Tirado Education and Seminar Room, located on the first floor, is dedicated space that allows the fraternity to conduct chapter retreats, executive council meetings, volunteer training and a host of other activities that help to build a stronger fraternity. And though the fraternity has been in its ‘new home’ for less than four months, several chapters have already taken advantage of the new facility. The weekend following the move, Alpha Psi (Indiana) chartered a bus and sent its 40-plus associate class to Charlotte where staff and volunteers conducted a two-day leadership retreat for the chapter’s newest members. The Eldred J. Harman Museum, also on the first floor, underscores Pi Kappa Phi’s commitment to history and heritage. Modeled after a formal parlor one would find in Charleston at the time of Pi Kappa Phi’s founding, the Harman Museum captures the ambiance and organic feel of where Pi Kappa Phi was founded. National Archivist Ted Scharfenstein, Beta Beta (Florida Southern), and other volunteers will fill the space over the course of next six months with existing pieces in the national fraternity’s archival collection. The establishment of the Kelley A. Bergstrom Leadership Center of Pi Kappa Phi fulfills a key strategic element in the fraternity’s Second Century Vision Plan, which was adopted by the 49th Supreme Chapter in 2004. Constructed exclusively without the use of student revenues, Pi Kappa Phi National Fraternity’s new home also illuminates its desire to keep the student experience both accessible and affordable. The facility will be formally dedicated in December 2008 in conjunction with the fraternity’s Founders’ Day observance. Lastly, the campaign that has made all of this possible will conclude in the coming months. If you would like to support this effort or learn more about the Kelley A. Bergstrom Leadership Center, please contact Executive Director Tom Atwood at (800) 929-1904 ext. 104.

based scholarships to deserving student members. The Pi Kapp Scholars, Turnaround Scholars, Outstanding Associate Member Scholars and Craig A. Winkelmann Health Professions Scholarship programs are designed to recognize and motivate academic excellence in our chapters. Moreover, these scholarships underscore the Foundation’s belief that success in the fraternity first begins with success in the classroom. Academic success, chapter leadership, and community involvement are the broad criteria by which students are evaluated to ensure wellrounded candidates.

leadership schools The Foundation grants money to

offset the educational costs of Pi Kappa Phi’s leadership schools, including Pi Kapp College and Mid Year Leadership Conference. By attending these schools, undergraduate members not only learn effective techniques in chapter management but develop personal leadership skills too. the leadership institute Pi Kappa Phi’s Leadership Institute features Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. This seminar offers corporate-level leadership training conducted by trained Pi Kappa Phi facilitators, giving our members an edge in an ever-competitive world. Past participants have called this the “ultimate” in productivity and improvement workshops. Through funding provided by the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation, students receive the same materials and training offered to management employees of major corporations at a fraction of the price. life 401 Life 401 is a dynamic career and life success seminar that helps prepare undergraduates for life after college. Designed by Fortune 100 consultant and Pi Kappa Phi alumnus John Spence, LIFE 401 is another Foundationsupported program that provides a decisive advantage as our young members prepare to enter the “real world.” alcohol education The Foundation helps to provide

undergraduate chapters with one alcohol education program each year. Pi Kappa Phi utilizes the following alcohol education programs:

through your will. The Foundation will work with you and your estate planner in designing a planned gift that meets both your short and long term financial goals. Planned gifts can include cash, stocks, bonds, retirement plan assets, insurance policies or other negotiable items. The Foundation has established a Gift Acceptance Policy and can only accept gifts under the terms and conditions of this policy. We will be happy to provide you with a copy and assist you in making a planned gift to the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation. If you wish to include the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation in your will, the appropriate language is as follows: “I give, devise, and bequeath (the sum of/percentage of/residue of) my estate to the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation with principal offices in Charlotte, North Carolina, to be utilized for the general benefit of the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation (or the specified program within the Foundation).”

ALUMNI New s

LIFELONG ALUM DEVELOPING BIOFUEL TECHNOLOGY

ITHACA, N.Y.—Pi Kappa Phi alumnus Dr. Louis Albright, Psi (Cornell), a professor in the department of biology and environmental engineering, was recently contracted by a small New York company to conduct research to aid in the development of biofuel technology. The company, CEA Systems, received a $350,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Biofuels are expected to make a huge dent in the United States’ dependency on oil. A study by the Energy Foundation and the National Commission on Energy Policy found that “biofuels, coupled with vehicle efficiency and smart growth, could reduce the oil dependency of our transportation sector by two-thirds by 2050 in a sustainable way.” Albright’s research focuses on technology to increase efficiency and decrease cost in the production of cellulosic ethanol, a biofuel similar to corn ethanol. Cellulosic ethanol, however, produces three times the energy of corn ethanol and has the potential to emit drastically lower levels of greenhouse gases. According to studies by the U.S. Department of Energy, cellulosic ethanol reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 85 percent over regular gasoline, while corn ethanol may not reduce greenhouse gas emissions at all depending on how much energy is expended to plant, fertilize and irrigate the crop.

Another advantage of cellulosic ethanol is that it can be created from the biomass of nearly any plant—most often switchgrass, a native perennial of the tall grass prairie. Corn ethanol, on the other hand, can only be produced from the edible portions of corn and other grains, which also require fertilizers, irrigation and replanting each year. For the purpose of Albright’s research, CEA is using tobacco plants because of the applicability of its behavior in other plants. The idea behind Albright’s research is to insert a gene into a plant that will then make the plant produce a specific protein. “Each gene in the plant DNA has a specific function, so it is a matter of finding the right gene to insert,” said Albright. Already, researchers have identified the gene to create cellulase, an enzyme used to breakdown cellulose, which is how cellulosic ethanol is produced. This finding may have further implications. “The hypothesis was that if we could improve cellulase production significantly, the same should be true of many other proteins,” Albright said. While Albright and CEA have plans to look for other ways to apply their findings, their research is now delving deeper into how cellulase production can be optimized.

Pi Kappa Phis earn interfraternal honors WASHINGTON, D.C.—Two members of Pi Kappa Phi were recognized in April by the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) with the prestigious Award of Distinction. Dr. Phillip Summers, Alpha Psi (Indiana), was the recipient of the award in the alumnus category, and Steve Holtsclaw, Omega (Purdue), was recognized in the undergraduate category. The Award of Distinction is bestowed upon individuals and groups from the NIC’s 72 fraternities who advance the ideals of fraternity in their daily lives, who are committed to brightening the future of fraternity and who ensure that fraternities are living to their espoused mission and values.

Indiana University’s Dean of Students Richard McKaig said of Summers, “On campus, he’s known as Mr. Pi Kappa Phi, due to his heavy involvement in the Alpha Psi chapter. He invests a considerable amount of time in helping those men become a leading fraternity on Indiana’s campus.” Holtsclaw, meanwhile, will graduate this spring with a degree in management. Previously serving his chapter as treasurer and vice archon, Holtsclaw is Omega’s current archon as well as president of Purdue’s IFC. Including this year’s honors, Pi Kappa Phi has been recognized with six NIC Awards of Distinction. ONCAMPUS eta

emory

Re-colonized in the fall, Eta chapter of Pi Kappa Phi is excited to be back on campus for the first time since 1957. Already, the chapter has held elections, passed a constitution, and grown to nearly 30 members. They have also successfully participated in a downhill soapbox race car derby and are planning various other brotherhood events like paintball and go-kart racing. They’re also planning a number of social and philanthropy events. Several things have changed since the Eta chapter’s final years on Emory’s campus, but we are working hard to ensure the future success of the chapter. The men are already becoming a staple in the Emory community by attending school-related events and in the local community by building volunteer relationships. Eta is looking forward to new traditions, a new history, and a new group of men.

gamma phi

south alabama

The Gamma Phi chapter at the University of South Alabama has been taking many steps to improve the chapter not only for this year but for many years to follow. During this past year, the men hosted their annual Miss USA pageant, a scholarship program for the women of the university and a precursor for the Miss Alabama and Miss USA competitions. This year marked the 25th anniversary of the pageant, which is also the chapter’s primary fundraiser for Push America. After many hard hours of work, it was a very successful year once again. In January, a delegation from Gamma Phi attended Mid Year Leadership Conference in St. Louis, and returned with many new and great ideas. A plan of action was created for areas including recruitment, alumni relations, Push America, and the Ritual, but what the chapter gained most from the experience was new leadership skills. During South Alabama’s Greek awards banquet, the chapter received intramural championship plaques for softball and water

polo. Andrew Schnieder was awarded the Greek associate member of the year award and Lam Pham was inducted into Order of Omega. The past year has been exciting to say the least, and Gamma Phi chapter is really making strides to be the very best in every aspect. The brothers of the Gamma Phi wish all the best for our fellow brothers elsewhere.

zeta gamma north dakota

Two years ago, in the fall of 2006, Zeta Gamma celebrated its 20th Anniversary, and that event has marked a major turning point in the history of the chapter. During the past two years, the chapter has nearly doubled in size. The chapter increased from 18 men chapter to 34 and is still growing. Over the summer of 2007, two members of the Zeta Gamma participated in Gear Up Florida. Since that time, the chapter has been recognized in significant ways. Zeta Gamma was No. 1 on campus in philanthropy fundraising, second in grades among all fraternities, and was the only fraternity to receive the President’s Award for Greek Excellence. Archon Jeff Deutsch was named Chapter President of the Year Award, and recent alumnus Matt Myrick received the Pillar Award, the highest award for Greeks at the University of North Dakota . Matt was selected for this honor for several reasons. As the only member of Pi Kappa Phi to have completed all three national Push America events—Journey of Hope, Gear Up Florida and Build America—he individually raised more than $8,000. He also served Zeta Gamma as historian, secretary, warden and archon. He was also active in IFC, Board of Student Publications and Student Senate.

eta rho

texas state

The men of Eta Rho jumped to a quick start for the 2007-2008 school year by winning several awards at Pi Kapp College including an award for recruitment success and also having brother Andrae Turner recognized with the Howard H. Baker Leadership Award. The chapter continued the momentum into fall recruitment and

was able to recruit a core group of men to join the Eta Rho. Additionally, to close the semester, brother Derek C. Nelson was elected to the IFC Executive Board, continuing a legacy of strong leadership within the Greek community at Texas State. To kick off the spring, the men of Eta Rho participated in a recruitment retreat facilitated by National Historian Tom Sullivan, Delta Omega (Texas A&M). The retreat prepared the brothers for another successful recruitment in the spring. Overall, the chapter was able to bring in 29 men during to 2007-2008 school year, making Eta Rho the largest fraternity at Texas State. The chapter was also able to secure a chapter house this spring and will make the much anticipated move in the summer of 2008. Eta Rho will close the school year with its annual Rose Ball Formal.

theta nu delaware

The men of Theta Nu chapter held a brotherhood dinner in March to celebrate their one year anniversary. The dinner was held at the Deer Park Restaurant, where the chapter’s very first brotherhood event was held nearly two and half years before. The dinner was such a success that the chapter is considering repeating it each month. In the year since their charter was granted, the chapter has maintained a busy schedule. They have rewritten several chapter programs and created an Associate Member Manual. In terms of recruitment, the chapter added either new associates in the spring and finally pushed the chapter size to more than 50. For Push America, the chapter has more than doubled its fundraising total for the year. At the start of Spring semester, their total raised was more than $2,000—most of which was raised at the chapter’s “Greek Feud” event where they enlisted sororities to compete against in each other in a Delaware Greek version of Family Feud.
