We realize that everyone wants to consume content in different ways. We are confident the new star & lamp website affords us the opportunity to reach more people with the successes of our chapters, members and friends. The star & lamp site offers a timely and socially engaging platform to celebrate the successes of our chapters and members while providing entertaining and educational information. Through various surveys over the past year, we have heard loud and clear that you, our members, want to hear about your chapter and the accomplishments of other Pi Kappa Phi alumni. In addition to the stories of success from our undergraduates, alumni and friends, we want to bring you the information and content that we think all of our many audiences will find entertaining and useful, all while strengthening your connection to Pi Kappa Phi. Currently, the star & lamp website has columns on published members of Pi Kappa Phi, members in arts and entertainment, a column dedicated solely to engaged friends, alumni and staff sharing mentoring advice and lessons they’ve learned, pieces of memorabilia

And that’s all in addition to the news and successes from Pi Kappa Phi being posted in real-time. Rather than holding information to publish or post quarterly, we are reporting good news when it happens. We are encouraging chapters and members to get in the habit of submitting their news. Anyone can submit news with the link at the top of the site. Of course pikapp.org is still the primary source for information, resources and event registrations related to Pi Kappa Phi. 

Tracy is a founding father of the Zeta Theta Chapter at the University of Texas at Austin, where as a student he served as archon. From 1991 to 1996, Tracy worked as a staff member at the national headquarters, including time as executive vice president of Pi Kappa Phi Properties. As a volunteer, he has served as a chapter advisor for Alpha Psi (Indiana) and as area governor for the Pacific Northwest Region. For the past ten years, Tracy has served on the National Council, serving two terms a national secretary, one term as national historian, one term as national treasurer and is completing his term as national vice president/ president elect this year. Tracy received a bachelor’s degree in government from UT and an M.B.A. in finance from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business. Tracy lives with his wife of 16 years, Donna, in Portland, Ore., where he is CEO of CD Baby, the largest distributor of independent music in the world.

National Vice President/President-Elect nominee

Tom is a member of Delta Omega Chapter at Texas A&M University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s

in university administration. Currently Tom is working on his doctorate in education administration at Texas Tech University. As an undergraduate, Tom completed terms as Push America chairman, chaplain and three years as vice archon. As an alumnus, Tom served on the national staff as director of chapter services and has filled roles as chapter advisor for Eta Chi (TCU), recruitment advisor for Delta Omega (Texas A&M) and faculty advisor for Eta Rho (Texas State). He has also served as a regional governor and was recognized as “Regional Governor of the Year” in 2003. In 2004, he was recognized with the exclusive Beta Circle Award, recognizing his contributions to the fraternity’s recruitment and expansion efforts. Tom has served two terms as national historian, one as national secretary, and one as national treasurer. He is the director of student life at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas, where he lives with his wife, Cheri, their son Owen and daughter Carly.

JEREMY D. GALVIN National Treasurer nominee

Jeremy was initiated in 1993 into Alpha Omicron Chapter at Iowa State University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 1997 and a master’s in 2009. As a student Jeremy served his chapter as archon and warden. As an alumnus Jeremy has served as chapter advisor for his own chapter and as regional governor for the Northern Plains region. Jeremy remains active with the Alpha Omicron BOAA and Building Corporation and has served on the Push America board of directors. He has also worked for the national staff in various capacities, including as a leadership consultant, director of the Journey Project, director of volunteer services and director of volunteer and chapter services. Jeremy lives in Ames, Iowa, with his wife,

TIM S. HEBSON National Secretary nominee

Tim is an alumnus initiate of the Alpha Eta Chapter at Samford. Tim’s brother and brother-inlaw are also initiates of Alpha Eta. Tim received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Mobile, a master’s degree from Samford, and a doctorate in education from the University of Alabama. Tim currently serves as the dean of students at Alabama, a post he has held since 2007. Previously, Tim served as director of housing at Samford University, assistant director of student activities at Auburn University, and director of student life at the University of Montevallo. In addition to his current role at Alabama, Tim has filled roles as director of judicial affairs and associate dean of students/executive director of student development. He is married to the former Jo Bevill of Birmingham and enjoys traveling and sports. He is currently serving his second term on the National Council as national chaplain after previously serving as national historian.

ERIC J. ALMQUIST National Historian nominee

Eric Almquist was initiated into the Alpha Omicron Chapter at Iowa State University on October 16, 1987. In 1988, Eric was a member of the first Journey of Hope team. Since graduation, Eric has served on the Board of Alumni Advisors for his chapter at Alpha Omicron and has also served as chapter advisor for two chapters of Pi Kappa Phi. At the national level, Eric

has served on two of Pi Kappa Phi’s four national leadership boards. He joined the Push America board of directors in 1998 and served on the board for ten years, including two years as president from 2004 to 2006. In 2006, Brother Almquist joined the Board of Directors for Pi Kappa Phi Properties and served as the vice president, in charge of the Infrastructure Loan Fund (ILF) for Properties. Eric is currently the chairman of the Pi Kappa Phi Properties board. Eric has served as a facilitator for the Mid Year Leadership Conference and also co-chairing the Alumni Planning Committee for the 80th anniversary of his chapter at Iowa State. Eric currently lives in the Chicago area with his wife Paula and daughter Caroline.

WILLIAM T. SIGMON National Chaplain nominee

William is an initiate of the Alpha Sigma Chapter at the University of Tennessee, where as a student he served as treasurer, secretary and chaplain. As a volunteer, he has served as a member of the Alpha Sigma Housing Corporation, as regional governor in North Carolina and as City Events coordinator for the Charlotte area. For the past eight years, William has served on the Push America board of directors, serving terms as secretary, treasurer and chairman, as well as leading numerous board committees during his tenure. William received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Tennessee and has attained certification as a Six Sigma Master Blackbelt through his employer, Bank of America. He is currently a senior vice president with Bank of America, having responsibility for global operations functions for the world’s dominant wholesale provider of foreign currency. William lives with his wife of 20 years, Elizabeth, and their two children Marshall and Jordan, in Charlotte, N.C.

JAMES M. SMITH National Chancellor nominee

James was initiated into the Alpha Eta Chapter at Samford University, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in religion and human relations and served as his chapter’s recruitment chairman. After college, James accepted a position at Texas Christian University as a residence hall director. At TCU, he worked to open the door for Pi Kappa Phi to expand on campus, which ultimately led to the founding of Eta Chi Chapter. While in Fort Worth, James earned a master of arts in theology from Southwestern Seminary and met his wife, Tas, a proud Horned Frog and Chi Omega alumna. James returned to Samford to attend law school at the Cumberland School of Law, after which he clerked for the Alabama Supreme Court in Montgomery. Since his clerkship, James has maintained an active law practice, primarily focused on litigation. For more than two decades, he has served as a chapter advisor, regional governor, and most recently, national chancellor. He and Tas, along with their three children—Emily Ann, 12; Sam, 9; and Abby, 6—live in a small community outside Birmingham, where they are active in their church and community. 

IN LATE 2013, PI KAPPA PHI put into

motion a new initiative to recognize young alumni for their achievements after their undergraduate careers have come to an end. After several weeks of initial legwork by the Pi Kappa Phi alumni engagement team, we are extremely excited to introduce to you the first class of Thirty Under 30 honorees. All of these alumni were nominated to be included in the initial Thirty Under 30 class by their peers, fellow alumni, friends of the fraternity and more. From there, a committee of volunteers reviewed all of the nominees in areas such as impact, leadership, service, awards and recognition. After the herculean effort of reviewing all nominations was completed, we had our list of 30 names. On the following pages, you’ll read a little about each of these young men, and why they’ve been included in this group. Alumni of 25 different chapters—of all sizes, regions and age—are represented in the following pages painting a broad, yet distinguished, view of Pi Kappa Phi as a national organization. These alumni come from all types of backgrounds and were nominated for all types of outstanding achievement: volunteerism, professional achievement and more. While the qualifications of the honor can vary, all of the recipients have in common a commitment to our fraternal values. These men are all outstanding examples of how to live out the values of Pi Kappa Phi long after leaving your college campus . . .

 WIL ADAMS Beta Omicron (Northwestern State)

Wil Adams is a quickly rising financial advisor for Edward Jones Investments, opening his own branch in Bossier City, La. in 2011. Wil graduated from Northwestern State University in 2009 and now serves on NSU Presidents Council, NSU Alumni Association Board of Directors, and Pi Kappa Phi - Beta Omicron Alumni Foundation Board. As a student, he served the Beta Omicron Chapter as secretary, vice archon, cycled Gear Up Florida (2007) and was IFC president. Since signing on with Edward Jones, he has made an impact in north Louisiana by working with successful individuals and business owners by offering fee-based investing, retirement plans, 401(k) rollovers, annuities, life insurance, and more.

Neil was this year’s recipient of the Young Alumni of the Year Award for Beta Iota Chapter. He currently serves as advisor for recruitment and public relations and provides help in other areas. For the past three years he has secured a sponsorship through Outback Steakhouse for food donations at no cost to Beta Iota’s annual Pi Kappa Pasta fundraiser. His full-time job is a quality manager for Preform Technologies, where he has received top honors

within the company for starting and implementing a lean manufacturing/ Six Sigma quality system that took the company to a record breaking year in 2013. Neil also has started and developed a realestate investment and management company. He specializes in the single family home with an emphasis on the student market. A past cheerleader and marathon runner, he has established a local cheerleading association as well as a runners’ club for those preparing for marathons.

 LUCAS BLAZEJEWSKI Beta Iota (Toledo)

During his time as an student member, Lucas served his chapter as archon, vice archon and treasurer and cycled on the Journey of Hope North team. He was also involved in Dance Marathon, a member of Blue Key National Honor Society, and Mortar Board National Honor Society. Luc remained at the University of Toledo after graduation to pursue a master’s degree in pharmaceutical science. His work during the degree earned him two publications in the Journal of Community Health. He has served the fraternity as an advisor, a Ladder of Risk and ASTP facilitator and a 2011 Gear Up Florida cyclist. In the Toledo community, he served on the President’s Council on Diversity at UT and volunteered at the Lucas County Health Department. After receiving his graduate degree from the University of Toledo, Luc secured a full scholarship to the

University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health to pursue a Peace Corps Masters International degree in public health and left the United States for a Peace Corps appointment in Kenya in June 2013.

 BILLY BOULDEN Eta Iota (Christopher Newport)

Billy Boulden graduated from Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va. in May 2006. Since graduation, Billy has served as a crew member for the Journey of Hope South team, as well as the project manager for the 2009 Gear Up Florida team. Billy completed his master’s degree from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., and has worked in higher education for eight years. He has been active in many national professional organizations and was honored early in his career as the New Professional of the Year from the National Association of Campus Activities South Region. Billy has worked at the Pi Kappa Phi headquarters, Longwood University, Florida State University and currently serves as the assistant dean of students and director of Greek affairs at Iowa State University.

 WILLIAM BOYCE Beta Eta (Florida State)

As an undergraduate at Florida State University, William founded Honors Delegates, a student organization that specializes in recruiting starandlamp.com

high-achieving high school students interested in FSU’s honors program. He was also a refounding father of the Beta Eta Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi at Florida State University, where he served as the founding chaplain. Boyce graduated summa cum laude in religious studies, history and English and was named a 2011 Fulbright Full Grant Scholar to the United Kingdom, one of 35 in the country. He obtained a master’s of literature from the University of Glasgow’s Centre for the Study of Literature, Theology and the Arts, studying the cross-pollination of christian theology and the arts. After completing his degree, Boyce returned to the United States and enrolled in the master of divinity program at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Boston and will begin his doctoral work in religious studies at the University of Virginia in fall 2014.

 NICK BRADY Theta Xi (Arizona State)

Nick Brady is a founding father of Theta Xi Chapter who hails from San Francisco. A natural leader, Nick has been dedicated to living the mission of both Pi Kappa Phi and Push America since his initiation in 2006. He served for a year as leadership consultant with the national headquarters and continued to volunteer after his departure, serving as a facilitator and one of the fraternity’s youngest regional governors. Nick is a two-time Pi Alpha, cycling Journey of Hope in 2012, where he earned

the coveted Bruce Rogers Award, and serving as project manager in 2013. Nick has worked in the private sector, but his passion for service led him to a career serving people with disabilities. For over a year, he worked tirelessly toward admission into Officer Candidate School in the United States Navy because he felt passionately that it was the best way to apply his leadership skills in a way that served his country. He has recently been admitted and will begin Officer Candidate School this summer.

 MICHAEL BUMBRY Epsilon Alpha (Elon)

A 2007 graduate of Elon University, Michael Bumbry has been a dedicated alumnus to both Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity and Elon University. He received a master’s in higher education from North Carolina State University. The first man of color to receive the Phillip M. Summers Award, he has been dedicated to supporting diversity and the fraternal movement as a higher education professional. Michael has worked tirelessly to improve students’ lives on a multitude of campuses. This includes developing new curriculum for Greek students at Duke University, forming a counseling group for gay fraternity men, leading the Mid-Atlantic College and University Housing Officers at Temple, creating a student affairs interest organization at NC State, and designing curriculum for aspiring student affairs leaders at Loyola. Bumbry is currently working

toward his doctorate in higher education at Loyola University.

 CHRIS COOKE Delta Alpha (Virginia Tech)

After graduating in December 2011, Chris served as interim chapter advisor, helping to establish a Council of Advisors while working for the university which earned him Virginia Tech’s Henry S. Mattox Fraternity Alumnus of the Year Award. Chris began law school at the University of Maryland, where he finished the year in the top five percent and accepted a summer internship with Yingke Law Firm in Shanghai, China. Chris then transferred to Georgetown University Law Center, where he is on the board of directors for the Georgetown International Arbitration Society and the Society of International Law. He is currently a legislative fellow in the Office of U.S. Senator Rand Paul and is actively involved in the Libertarian Party of Virginia. Chris will be a summer associate with the New York law firm Chadbourne & Parke in summer 2014 and is set to graduate from Georgetown in May 2015.

While only 28 years old, Captain Adam Dunn has served as a special operations combat systems officer and has worked diligently to support the nation’s most elite

joint special operations warfighters. On seven overseas deployments, Capt. Dunn has hunted the nation’s most wanted terrorists, providing direct support to the special operations teams who bring terrorists and insurgents to justice. Captain Adam Dunn graduated from the Theta Eta Chapter at American University in 2007 earning a B.A. in international relations, cum laude and with university honors. After commissioning as an officer in the United States Air Force, Capt. Dunn attended Undergraduate Combat Systems Officer training at Randolph AFB, Texas. After earning his wings and graduating first in his class of 17, Capt. Dunn was assigned to Air Force Special Operations Command at Hurlburt Field, Fla., to fly the U-28A manned intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft. Capt. Dunn has been on seven deployments across three continents.

As an undergraduate at Lenoir-Rhyne University, Jake was active in his support of Push America. His organization of service and fundraising events, as well as his participation in national events, earned him Lenoir-Rhyne’s Greek Man of the Year Award in 2009. After completing Journey of Hope South in 2007 as a crew member, he came to understand the power that chiropractic treatment has in helping people with disabilities. After returning to campus, he changed his major to pre-

med, going on to earn his doctorate in chiropractic. Jake has recently opened his doors with Ambrose Chiropractic in Richmond, Va., and gives back to the community by providing nutrition and chiropractic services to local firehouses.

 KAREEM HAMMAD Eta Sigma (UCLA)

Kareem Hammad is a born and raised Angelino and an excellent ambassador for the city of Los Angeles. During his time at UCLA, he served as Eta Sigma Chapter’s archon and the face of the university with his involvement in the UCLA Spirit Squad. His commitment to his university and his fraternity brothers continued after graduating–starting and leading an alumni spirit squad. Kareem serves as one of the main producers at AV Squad, a creative advertising agency that focuses on entertainment marketing. As one of the youngest producers, Kareem deals with clients like Netflix and Paramount Pictures, producing trailers and commercials for film and television. Last year, his work earned him the Golden Trailer Award for his work on the trailer for the film Argo and the Key Art Award on the film trailer for 42.

 WILL HOPPER Eta Chi (Texas Christian)

Will Hopper was highly involved as an undergraduate at Texas Christian University,

serving as an orientation leader, campus tour guide and a member of the Reformed University Fellowship and Neeley Fellows Business Honors Program, all while serving Eta Chi Chapter as chaplain and Push America chairman. He graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s in entrepreneurship, with a minor in chemistry. Hopper’s main career goal is to become a physician, but for the last two years he has chosen to forgo further education in order to focus on global service. He has lived in the Dominican Republic serving as a Mortiz Fellow for Esperanza International, a christian nonprofit microfinance organization. In January, he moved to Malaysia on a Fulbright grant to teach English in a small rural village and plans to return to the U.S. in 2015 to pursue a medical career.

 JONATHAN HUTH Iota Beta (Texas – San Antonio)

Petty Officer Second Class Jonathan Huth had no intention of attending college when he joined the U.S. Navy after graduating high school in 2003, but leadership in the military eventually led him to leadership in the fraternity. In his six years in the Navy, his exemplary leadership earned him promotion to the rank of Petty Officer Second Class. Huth earned the position of Watch Commander in his final year of service and was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his outstanding service. After leaving the Navy

he began college at University of Texas - San Antonio, where he became a founding father of Iota Beta Chapter. During his time in the chapter, he served as chaplain and eventually archon, leading the chapter to its largest fundraising for Push America to date.

 BRIAN KIRN Beta Epsilon (Missouri – Columbia)

Brian Kirn is a proud graduate of the University of Missouri, where he led and participated in a wide variety of campus organizations in addition to his devotion to the Beta Epsilon Chapter. He starred in campus productions and served as vice president of the College of Arts and Science Student Council and vice president of Omicron Delta Kappa. In his final semester, he was named as part of Mizzou ’39 (recognizing the top 39 seniors on campus) and selected as a Pi Kapp Scholar. He continues his dedication to Mizzou as a lifetime member of the Alumni Association, also serving on the Arts and Science Alumni Organization Board. He also continues to serve the fraternity as a volunteer in a number of capacities, facilitating Mid Year Leadership Conference, Ladder of Risk and as a member education specialist. Professionally, Brian taught Spanish for two years for Teach For America in St. Louis and now works for their national headquarters in New York City on the finance and administration team. During his time as an undergraduate at Bowling Green State University, Nick served as the historian, risk manager and Push America chairman. He also crewed on Journey of Hope (2007) and Gear Up Florida (2009). His ability to fundraise, problem solve and manage teams was clearly evident. Before the age of 25, he oversaw all of United Way’s operations for Wood County and sat on a number of public and nonprofit boards in the area due to his expertise. The success that he brought to the United Way in Wood County earned him a promotion to a vice president role in a much larger county of Wisconsin last year where he managed Racine County to the largest annual campaign in its 91 year history. This spring he returned to his alma mater as a director of development in the office of advancement, overseeing major gift solicitations for University Libraries and Student Affairs.

Startup Mentality to Solve Healthcare Challenges,” and will be presenting research at a conference in Austin, Texas, as well as at Yale University and the International Conference on Health, Wellness and Society in Vancouver. Glenn continues to remain active in his community to bring attention to equality challenges and remains actively engaged in politics to address future concerns on fairness laws and healthcare policy.

 JASON O’ROUKE Lambda (Georgia)

In his eight years since graduation, Jason O’Rouke has proven to be a rising star in the political arena. Following graduation, O’Rouke moved to Atlanta to work for the Secretary of the Senate in the Georgia General Assembly as a legislative aide and going on to work for the Council for Quality Growth, a trade association he had interned with as an undergrad. Jason spent more than three years with CQG where he worked on transportation, environmental land use and infrastructure policy issues that affected the Metro-Atlanta real estate industry. Jason returned to the University of Georgia in 2010 to earn his master’s in public administration, serving as president of the UGA Graduate Student Association. After completing his MPA, Jason returned to Atlanta and ran two statewide constitutional ballot campaigns in 2011, before beginning work as a legislative assistant for Congressman Doug Collins. As a House staffer, Jason staffed the

Oversight and Government Reform committee for Congressman Collins. He returned to Georgia in October 2013 to work as a political consultant and is currently managing a State School Superintendent campaign.

 RYAN PADGETT Sigma (South Carolina)

A 2007 graduate with a Bachelor of science in managemententrepreneurship, Padgett’s career in hospitality has been quickly successful. He started work with Fennell Holdings Inc., a Charleston hotel conglomerate upon graduation. He quickly rose to become the general manager at the Ansonborough Inn, located in historic Charleston in 2010. During his one year at the helm, the Ansonborugh Inn was awarded the prestigious Four Diamond award for the first time, and has received the same honor for four consecutive years. His work earned him the role of project manager and general manager of a brand new Holiday Inn Express by the North Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center, quickly being promoted to the general manager of his current property, the Holiday Inn-Charleston Airport & Convention Center. Outside of his work in hospitality, Padgett coaches youth basketball and is a member of the Greek social society AHEPA, the Charleston Area Hospitality Association (CAHA), and Pi Kappa Phi’s Alpha Chapter Alumni Board.

 RYAN PERNICE Psi (Cornell)

Ryan Pernice was a refounding father of Psi Chapter, serving as warden his junior year. He was also involved on campus in Ye Hosts Academic Honorary Society, and was a Meinig Family Cornell National Scholar. In 2007, he received the Joseph Drown Special Prize for top graduate from the School of Hotel Administration. After working as a restaurant consultant for two years, he opened Maialino restaurant in NYC with Union Square Hospitality Group. In August 2011, he opened Table & Main in his hometown of Roswell, Ga. Since opening, Table & Main has been included in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Top 50 Restaurants twice, Atlanta Magazine’s A-List Restaurants, and Zagat Atlanta’s “ATL’s Hottest Tables.” In November 2013, he opened his second restaurant, Osteria Mattone, and has been recognized as Entrepreneur of the Year by Roswell, Ga. and Young Entrepreneur of the Year by Fulton County. Post graduation, Tyler served the national fraternity as a leadership consultant specializing in starting and servicing new chapters. Upon returning to his hometown of Tempe, Ariz., in August 2010, Tyler served the Theta Xi Chapter as chaplain advisor, supported Iota Eta (Embry-Riddle) during their chartering, helped Theta Upsilon (Northern Arizona) double their chapter size, and facilitated Mid Year Leadership Conference. Tyler also serves on the fraternity’s member education standing committee. He is now in Milwaukee attending Marquette University School of Dentistry, where he is in his third year. He is the senior trial counsel for the United States Army’s First Cavalry Division in Fort Hood, Texas. Prior to his current assignment, Carlos was the trial counsel and legal advisor for the United States Army Ordnance School. Carlos has been on active duty with the army as a judge advocate since 2010. In the summer of 2014, Carlos will assume duties as the chief of military justice for Combined Joint Task Force 1 in Kandahar, Afghanistan. John is passionate about discovering and developing new therapies to treat various types of cancer, and as such, has active collaborations with other groups within the National Center for Advancing Translational Science, as well as several other institutions. John has received a Federal Technology Transfer award and numerous travel awards to present his work at national and international conferences from the NCI Center of Excellence in Integrative Cancer Biology and Genomics, the American Association of Cancer Research, the International Mammalian Genome Society, and the Keystone Future of Science Fund.

 GREG SMITH Tau (North Carolina State)

Greg Smith is an accomplished construction program and project management LEED certified professional that believes in effectively improving environments to ultimately advance communities and organizations. He has successfully led and completed over $40 million worth of federal, commercial and local government projects and supported projects totaling over $300 million. Greg joined Brailsford & Dunlavey in 2013, overseeing design and construction of public

educational facilities on behalf of the DeKalb County Schools District. In addition to a successful career, he founded the Ace Mentorship Program for Parsons in Washington, D.C., a program that mentors students interested in the fields of architecture, construction and engineering at a local high school and competes against other local schools on a project that awards students with scholarships. From his hard work, he was elected as the Parsons Early Career Program regional representative for the Washington, D.C. district. Smith has also given back to Push America with his participation in Marine Corps Marathon and by founding of an annual softball tournament to raise funds for both Push America and Wounded Warrior Project.

 JOSH TANENBAUM Theta Zeta (George Washington)

Josh is an entrepreneur, a nonprofit/philanthropy consultant in business development and an activist for religio-cultural understanding and youth empowerment. He is the founder, president and CEO of Local Vibes LLC, a socially conscious independent artist & repertoire (A&R) company. Josh currently heads the Young Leadership Committee at the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding as the organization’s youth liaison, is a member of the Young Leadership Committee of American Israeli Cultural Foundation, and a Young

World Fellow of the Duke of Edinburgh International Award Foundation. He is also a junior board member of the Polonsky Foundation and is active with Nexus Youth Summit. Josh was recognized by Musiker summer program for mediating an ethnic conflict at UCLA. He enjoys presenting on next generation philanthropic engagement, embracing and navigating family legacies, and empowering musicians to become advocates for causes for which they have a passion.

 JOSH TUTTEROW Delta (Furman)

During his time at Furman, Josh Tutterow served as chapter archon while majoring in computer science. When school was not in session, Josh devoted countless weekends and several of his summers to volunteering for Camp Spearhead, a residential summer camp in upstate South Carolina that caters specifically to children with disabilities. Since graduating in 2008, Josh has worked for Benefitfocus in Charleston, S.C., where he is currently a release manager, responsible for coordinating all deployments of new software. Although professionally successful, Josh hasn’t let it stand in his way of continuing to volunteer regularly to help people with disabilities. He volunteers with the City of Charleston Therapeutic Recreation Department as a coach for basketball, tennis, swimming, bocce and bowling, earning him the South Carolina Recreation and Park Association Volunteer of the Year

 WAYNE UNGER Theta Xi (Arizona State)

Wayne Unger initiated into the Theta Xi Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi in the fall of 2009. During his time as an undergraduate member he served both as standards board chairman and archon. Under his leadership, Pi Kappa Phi at Arizona State had record-breaking fundraising for Push America and was awarded the top three honors any undergraduate fraternity chapter can receive– Arizona State’s Fraternity of the Year Award, Pi Kappa Phi’s Kroeg Award and the NorthAmerican Interfraternity Conference’s Chapter Award of Distinction. After graduating with honors in the Business Supply Chain Management program, Wayne went on to work for Cisco Systems in San Jose, Calif., where he is the chief of staff for Supply Chain Risk Management, Sustainability and Compliance. In San Jose, Wayne immediately continued his service to the fraternity by becoming a Ladder of Risk facilitator

and the chartering chapter advisor for the Iota Sigma Chapter at San Jose State.

 JOHN VISCONI Theta Nu (Delaware)

He was initiated as the founding vice archon of the Theta Nu Chapter in 2007, completing Journey of Hope that same year. After graduating, he was admitted to law school at Rutgers University. While in law school, John began volunteering as Push America advisor for Theta Nu Chapter, chapter advisor for Zeta Kappa (Richard Stockton) and facilitating Mid Year Leadership Conference, ASTP and Ladder of Risk. After earning his J.D. in 2010, John went on to become an attorney, but his service to the fraternity continued even with this demanding job. In addition to completing the Marine Corps Marathon as part of the 2010 Push America Challenge team, John served as chapter advisor for Epsilon Theta (Seton Hall) and later become regional governor for Greater NYC. The region grew from three active chapters to six with new chapters at Iona, Rutgers and Quinnipiac, in part due to his assistance. His extensive body of work at such a young age while balancing a successful career as an attorney illustrates exemplary dedication and leadership.

Kappa (UNC – Chapel Hill)

Blake joined Pi Kappa Phi as one of the refounding fathers of Kappa Chapter at UNCChapel Hill, serving as secretary and house manager. Determined to raise the bar for the Greek community at UNC, Blake established one of the university’s largest Greek-run nonprofit initiatives: Heels4Hope—a week-long series of events dedicated to raising money and awareness for Push America, the Arc of Orange County, UNC Lineberger and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospitals. The Heels4Hope’s 5K Challenge became an annual tradition raising over $60,000, earning him Chapel Hill’s “Hometown Hero” award at the end of his senior year. Upon graduation, Blake moved to Madrid, Spain, where he served as an American language and cultural ambassador to the Spanish Ministry of Education. Blake also accepted a position working as the executive office assistant and protocol liaison to the U.S. Ambassador. Since returning home, Blake has established his own clothing line—Blake Ashland & Co. Today, Blake works tirelessly to launch his own collection of bowties, neckties and pocket squares. 

PUSH AMERICA CHALLENGE

A JOURNEY: one

step at a time

THE SAME WAY A LIBRARY is full of books, each

providing an imaginative moment in time, the world is full of people moving through the chapters of life creating their own story. Every day is a step closer to the conclusion, and every turn of events reminds us that we only have so much control over those stories. Our inability to edit the narrative secures that our first draft is our last and every story ends with one edition. As we reflect on the plot twists that changed the course of our lives, there are critical moments in time when we must embrace and harness the uncontrollable to affect positive change in our lives, and those around us. At eight-years-old, Max Conserva, Gamma (UC - Berkeley), was enjoying the warm summer sun on his bicycle in the quiet neighborhood of Simi Valley, Calif., when his story would change forever. Facing west at a green light, Max rolled down the curb into the crosswalk. A semitruck, facing north, made a right turn at his red light not seeing the small obstacle of a boy on his bike. Max was thrown off his bike and found himself caught between the truck and the asphalt in a split second. “Fortunately, before too long, some bystanders at the intersection who witnessed the accident ran out in front of the truck to force it to a stop. The driver was still oblivious to what had happened. Finally stopped, with people gathered, the truck was ordered to reverse. The truck rolled back, leaving what remained laying on the asphalt in the center of the lane. With my bike still in my right hand, I stood up, then fell back to the pavement. The rest of my life began,” Max recalls. His leg brutally injured, Max faced an exhausting and extensive recovery, aspects of which are forever ongoing.

“I was caught underneath the truck and drug on my side against the asphalt for a sufficient distance resulting in severe skeletal, muscular and nerve damage to the lateral side of my right leg,” explains Max—now 33. “Between then and now, a lot of time has passed and a lot of work has been done. To put it simply, what I am left with is a leg missing a lot of important parts. I am missing many significant chunks of bone from my femur and tibia that are generally responsible for keeping one’s leg from collapsing in on itself. My leg is constantly attempting to buckle in ways that turn the stomach—forcing me to wear a four-pound, full leg brace comprised of polypropylene, carbon fiber and hardened steel.” All of the damage to Max’s leg also had significant impacts on his growth plates. Because the accident occurred early in his youth, Max’s “coming of age” was difficult in that one leg always seemed to lag behind in growth and development. Max’s right leg is now about an inch and half shorter with 30% less girth and a four-and-a-half size difference in shoes.

Adding to all of the obstacles and their incomprehensible nature, research of Max’s injury—and subsequent disability—has not realized the same progression as that of similar industries. Solutions for limb salvage have lagged behind prosthetics, primarily due to the unique nature of each case. In prosthetics, if in an individual has lost a limb with no other complicating damage, the injury is largely uniform with others who have lost limbs. There is a common starting point from which to develop a solution. The remainder of limb salvage represents the long tail of possibilities of injury combinations to the various muscular, skeletal, nerve, soft tissue and growth systems of the limb, none of which are individually common enough to demand dedicated research. The results are quasi-solutions that work sufficiently for all, but great for no one that is looking to push edge of performance. Despite the injury, the countless surgeries to salvage his limb and all of the effects listed, Max was, and is, determined to live a healthy and active life; a life not defined by his physical limitations, but by his mental capacity to overcome and succeed. Max went on to attend the University of California – Berkeley and became a member of Pi Kappa Phi— not because of a personal empathy with the mission of Push America, but because of the “normal” components of fraternity life. “During college, my connection to philanthropy and Push America was probably typical of the average Pi Kapp. I was aware of the organization and active to the extent to which the chapter at large was involved. I participated in the standard fundraising events and supported the Journey of Hope riders. To me it was simply another responsibility

of being a member of the fraternity. There was no particular draw or inspiration to involve myself further. I’m a Pi Kapp. Pi Kapps contribute to Push America. So, I contributed to Push America. No more, no less.” Nearly ten years removed from his collegiate experience, Max’s professional career was at a point that enabled him to begin exploring the foundations of his life and the progress with his own disability. Recognizing the limitations facing the medical field with respect to his injury, Max’s mind began conceptualizing the feasibility of taking matters into his own hands and working towards solutions vastly improving his own comfort and mobility. In a fortuitous matter of coincidence, Max rediscovered Push America in 2013 at the No Barriers Summit in Telluride, Colo. “A fellow Gamma alumnus was planning on attending the conference in a volunteer role with Push America Challenge. Knowing my personal goals, he invited me to join. I accepted based on the narrow idea that I may meet some engineers in the field that could contribute to my projects. Upon arriving I was blown away by what I experienced. The conference connected with me on every level—as a solutions developer, a participant and as a volunteer. In the most natural way imaginable my mindset of ‘What can I take from experience?’ quickly gave way to ‘What can I contribute to this conversation?’ I was confronted with a community where I felt compelled to participate.” A year prior to attending No Barriers marked the beginning of Max’s journey to take his condition in his own hands. “I became determined to revisit every avenue that could lead to a more functional life. For surgical options, I paid a visit to the

best orthopedic surgeons in California. For physical rehab, I consulted with physical therapists at UCSF and, for a new perspective, became involved with San Francisco Crossfit. For orthotics, I began to design and prototype my own ideas. If an improvement seemed feasible, I was going to give it a shot.”

Going forward Max would like to use his site as a platform to communicate a journey that may be shared by other likeminded individuals—both professionals interested in partnering for a common goal and other individuals fighting a similar battle that can learn something from his path.

Upon arriving at No Barriers with Push America and seeing so many enabled athletes put themselves out there, a desire to take his own risks began to build. Throughout his life, Max had committed a great deal of effort to concealing his disability from anyone beyond a few medical professionals.

“At this point I don’t ultimately know where the project will lead me, but that daily exercise of exposing my struggles has already made a significant positive impact on my life. My experience with No Barriers and Push America Challenge has forever altered philanthropy’s place in my life. Walking the stage offers more than a degree NOTHING WOULD STOP senior Emily Rose Hernandez from walking across the stage when she graduated from UNT in May, not even being paralyzed from the waist down.

During her commute to UNT in August 2009, one of the wheels on Hernandez’s truck came off, causing her to drive off an overpass. She broke her neck, shoulder, wrist and ribs, and her lungs collapsed twice. Her brain hemorrhaged and her spinal cord was injured, leaving her legs paralyzed. “After my wreck I was determined to get my life back on track ASAP,” says Hernandez. “I re-enrolled at the College of Visual Arts and Design at UNT the following August.”

Her journey Hernandez decided, not only that she wanted to earn her degrees and graduate, but that she wanted to be able to walk across the stage during the ceremony. After several years of rehabilitation, she was ready to see that dream come true— but it would take the aid of costly braces. The braces Hernandez needed would allow her legs to support her again and, ultimately, to walk. “I have been putting my entire heart and mind into earning both of my degrees within a four-year time period and achieving what I’ve been working so hard for since my wreck: walking across that stage,” Hernandez says. “Walking across the stage will be a gift to myself for my hard work.” When she found out the braces would cost thousands of dollars, she realized she would need help. Hernandez began fundraising through a crowdfunding website and had raised more than $3,500.

Community support When Gamma Tau Chapter archon Taylor Lindholm heard about Hernandez’s goal, he knew this could be a great opportunity for the fraternity to reach out to a fellow student. “Originally Emily went to the Office of Disability Accommodation for help and they referred her to our advisor, Jaime Blanton, who then reached out to the

brothers with Emily’s story,” Lindholm says. “We immediately wanted to get involved.” Thanks in part to the UNT chapter’s philanthropic efforts and community service, the chapter has been recognized by UNT’s Office of Greek Life as Chapter of the Year for the past two years. “Helping others is a core value of our organization,” Blanton says. “We focus our efforts on helping people with disabilities to ensure that they are recognized for their abilities. In this case, what we are doing is helping the community recognize that Emily’s dream of walking across the stage at graduation is about having an equal college experience. It’s about making her dream a reality.” The Pi Kappa Phi chapter held several fundraisers around campus including a bike-a-thon and an Empathy Dinner for Emily’s cause. For the bike-a-thon, members of the fraternity rode stationary bikes on campus for 72 hours to raise awareness of Hernandez’s disability. “Emily came by each day of the bikea-thon,” Lindholm says. “She has the most upbeat personality and is the most engaging person I have ever met. It was truly life-changing to see her open up her heart to all the people who walked by during the bike-a-thon.”

Exceeding expectations Despite all the obstacles she had to overcome, Hernandez walked at graduation by using her torso to displace her weight and propel her forward. However, her journey is far from complete. After graduation, the braces will likely be modified into a reciprocating gait orthosis (RGO) that she can use to walk more normally, one leg at a time. This transition will occur once she masters walking with her current braces. Additionally, the aspiring art teacher is hoping for a specially-adapted vehicle so she can drive to work. In all, UNT’s Pi Kappa Phi members raised more than $3,000 in their efforts to support Hernandez and students like her. They hope to assist with any needed expenses for the RGO, the car or the vehicle adaptations. The ultimate goal, says Lindholm, is to help Hernandez achieve her dreams. “Walking across the stage isn’t just about me anymore,” Hernandez says. “It’s about all of the people who have supported me on my journey.”  (article courtesy of University of North Texas)

2013 ANNUAL REPORT DEAR BROTHERS AND FRIENDS: As chairman, it is my pleasure to share with you information about your foundation’s performance for the year ending December 31, 2013. I write to you with mixed emotions. While our achievements from last year are very positive—we’ve made marked and measurable gains in important areas of operation—this is also my last column to you as your chairman. It has been an honor to serve and I can assure you that the men following me are talented, ready and more than capable. We have a very special, indeed uncommon, fraternity. As I travel the country on foundationrelated business, I am reminded of this each time I speak with our student leaders and alumni donors. When I hear their stories of what Pi Kappa Phi has meant to them, I am reminded of my own experiences at Omicron Chapter (Alabama) and humbled to bear witness to their personal, deep and abiding connection to Pi Kappa Phi. In the pages that follow, you will see that the foundation had a very good year. Here are just a few points to consider. Our annual fund continues to ride a favorable trend line, up from $182,300 in 2011 to over $227,000 last year. This is an all-time high and represents a 25% increase within that time frame. Our 2013 efforts exceeded our budgeted revenue goal by 8% while saving nearly $10,000 on expenses. We believe these gains have come largely as a result of more effective communication and intentional outreach on the part of staff and volunteers while keeping a closer eye on how we’re spending our dollars. While raising money is certainly an important part of our mission, being thoughtful stewards of the gifts we have received is equally critical if we are to fulfill our mission and keep trust with our donors. Our investment committee carefully deploys our assets into the market following conservative investment guidelines approved by the board of trustees. In 2013, our endowment posted a 14.63% return for the year. While last year’s equity markets rose to record heights, I was reminded by the sage advice given to me by one of my predecessors when he said, “that in general, it is better for foundations to mitigate the downside and be risk balanced, even if it means underperforming in an up market.” Your foundation granted $206,488 to the fraternity through the annual grant for educational programming, scholarships and other distributions made to both chapters and individuals. It is important to note that $28,211 constituted special “one time” grants as the board of trustees approved a special distribution from several temporarily restricted funds that had remained inactive for many years.

While my report this year is very positive, I would be naïve to believe that there were no areas for improvement. We have noted, and recent attitudinal studies completed by the fraternity confirmed, that Pi Kappa Phi does a poor job maintaining contact with recent graduates. The foundation is no exception. The participation of our young alumni (men in the 22–29 age range) is poor despite many brothers indicating through surveys how important their fraternity experience was to their undergraduate career. We are also acutely aware of how crowded the charitable space has become. With over 961,000 registered public charities, many of whom perform valuable and important work in our donors’ communities, we must continue to tell our story in ever compelling and approachable ways for our current and future donors through improved technology and alumni directed programs and events.1 If you made a contribution to your foundation last year, we thank you for your gift. Pi Kappa Phi is in a unique position to impact the lives of young men; men who are now bound with us in a common loyalty to each other and to Pi Kappa Phi. Your fraternity takes a backseat to no other fraternal organization and continues to lead the fraternity world in excellence through growth, service and commitment to building better men.
