TAU TALES Kappa Phi. The initiation of

ARCHON’S LETTER As the outgoing archon, I would like to take a moment to thank everyone for their support over the past 12 months. From the 90th Anniversary celebrations to this fall’s Homecoming Tailgate and festivities, it has been wonderful spending time and bonding with the alumni members of Tau as well as their families. From the day that I first set foot into the front door of 2401 West Fraternity Court to now, I have experienced a wonderful transformation of this chapter from having almost no connection with the past to a rapidly growing active alumni base. The most important thing that the chapter has come to realize is just how important alumni relations are to the fraternity and every member’s experience as a Pi Kappa Phi. Please keep your eyes out for the next alumni event either by visiting www.pkp.org or www.pkpalumni.org, we would love to see you there! This fall we were once again in the running for the prestigious Caldwell Cup but fell to Sigma Phi Epsilon by a slight margin. The chapter has noticed what areas of academic, scholastic, and philanthropic excellence we can improve upon and are eager for a chance at next year’s Cup. We recently initiated 16 fine young men from the fall associate member class. Three of the members, Corbin Oliver, Lee Addison, and Kyle Davis are legacies.

These members bring the total chapter size to 67 for the end of the fall semester making us one of the largest fraternities on campus. We will have a few brothers going inactive for Study Abroad or Co-Op Programs, and two brothers transferring to UNCC for the spring semester with no one graduating until May keeping our chapter size strong. Recruitment has been restructured once again for this spring in order to attract more potential members to Greek Life so we are very optimistic going into spring rush.

In addition to the restructuring, we have approximately seven guys already on board for next semester’s associate class. As many of you already know, the current Greek Court is being demolished in order to make room for the new Greek Village. The Tau Chapter house was originally slated for demolition in the Summer of 2010 but has been pushed back to June of 2012. If you would like more information on the Greek Village project or would like to

offer any help or services, please contact Bob Lamphier (T-710, ablamphier@aol.com). We are looking forward to entertaining a Spring Pig Pickin’ similar to the 90th Anniversary, so keep your eyes open for details. We are also currently in the process of setting up a local alumni chapter as well as an official Housing Corporation. For more details on either of these projects please contact Chris Boyd (T-1161, cbpack51@yahoo.com). As I end my duties as archon, I am extremely pleased with the tasks that we have accomplished as a chapter over the past few years. Specifically I would like to thank the outgoing historian Taylor York (T-1317) for his efforts with this year’s Alumni Events as well as our Alumni Advisor, David Conn. I now pass along the gavel to the newly elected archon Taylor Resparc (T-1325, tcrespar@ncsu.edu) and his executive board and look forward to them taking our efforts and success as a chapter to the next level. Tau at Supreme Chapter This past August marked the 52nd meeting of the Supreme Chapter. The Supreme chapter was held in Orlando, Florida, from August 5th through August 9th. Tau was lucky enough to have three brothers to represent the chapter and its votes. These three young men were Archon Tyler Hull (T-1287), Historian Taylor York (T-1317), and brother Trey Baker (T-1291). During the week the three of us got to meet many new friends and new brothers of the fraternity. This experience not only allowed us to see the workings of the new chapter but also gave us insight to bring back to Tau that will allow us to work more efficiently and effectively as a chapter. All three men were able to speak before the Supreme chapter and be recorded into the National minutes, which was a great honor. Brother Hull worked extensively in making a new standards law that allows the chapter to put greater responsibility on the action of its active members, and to put this into writing in the Gold Book. This law is something that will greatly improve the standards process of Tau and allow us to be a more cohesive chapter.

does more for the chapter than anyone could ever imagine. He really is the best resource our chapter could ever have and we thank him for everything he has done for us. Overall, the week was great success and Tau is looking forward to attending the 2012 Supreme Chapter in Washington, DC .

Homecoming Event - 2010 During the Weekend of November 12-13, Tau chapter held its biannual alumni event. The event was held in conjunction with NC State’s Homecoming football game against Wake Forest. The activities kicked off on Friday night with a gathering at the Brickhouse. Appetizers and refreshments were enjoyed as well as karaoke. A good time was had by all and stories were exchanged between the active brothers and the present alumni, which ranged all the way back to Tau 199! As you can imagine the range of these stories was extremely diverse. Saturday afternoon brought the game along with the famous Pi Kapp tailgate. Active Brothers and Alumni enjoyed BBQ along with baked beans, mac and cheese, and bread pudding, prepared by our very own Chef James. The day culminated in the best way possible, a Wolfpack Victory! The current brotherhood has scheduled our spring alumni event which will hopefully coincide with a spring football game. This event will include the Push America Golf Tournament on Friday, April 15 at 1:30 p.m., a gathering on Friday night, the spring game on Saturday, followed by a pig pickin’ event at the house similar to what was done at the 90th. This event is sure to be a blast, so be on the lookout for a definite date. We look forward to seeing you all there!

Tau Alumnus Gives Back

During Supreme Chapter, two alumni who are very involved with our chapter were recognized for their outstanding work, and I would like to take the time to recognize them. Brother Dick Baker (Delta Beta) at North Georgia was recognized as the National Volunteer of the Year for his never ending involvement with Pi Kappa Phi. Mr. Baker helps with our Ritual of Initiation with Tau chapter and inspires us to “live the ritual” by helping us interpret it with our debrief. Brother Dave Conn (Epsilon Psi) at Slippery Rock College was recognized as the Alumni Advisor of the year for his work with Tau chapter. Brother Conn really means a great deal to everyone in the active brotherhood and

The day after final exams wrapped up, the University received a gift that could help it pass financial tests for years to come. On Dec. 17, University officials announced graduate and Pi Kappa Phi – Tau Chapter Alumnus - Lonnie C. Poole Jr. and his wife, Carol Johnson Poole, donated $40 million to the University. Poole, who earned his civil engineering degree from NC State in 1959, has made millions as founder of Waste Industries and has been a University benefactor for years. It is the largest single donation in the university’s history. Poole donated the bulk of the money, $37 million, to the College of Management, henceforth named The Lonnie C. Poole Jr. College of Management. In doing so, the couple upped the University's endowment by about 10 percent with a gift that Chancellor Randy Woodson called "huge" and "transformative."

"Lonnie is a great success story, and he says he owes much of his success to NC State," Woodson said. "This gift helps to elevate the stature of the College of Management; it will provide critical resources to hire and retain the best faculty and attract the best students."

College of Management Dean Ira Weiss said the gift will give the 18-year-old college a financial shot in the arm that will help it compete with the best business schools in the country. "We now are really aligned with the top programs: Kenan-Flagler, Fuqua, Poole, we should now be seen in that similar light," said Weiss, comparing the University's business school to UNC's and Duke's, respectively. "We are just proud as we can be; it's created huge smiles on faculty and staff faces. We can go out now, puff our chests out a bit and say we've come of age," said Weiss. Weiss said that the college will not see the benefits of the endowment for at least a year and a half. "The next 18 months will be a time of planning and assigning funds," he said. The planning will consider the needs of all aspects of the College of Management. "We've got a number of initiatives coming up," Weiss said. Atop the list of needs are retaining key faculty and creating new programs. As it considers how to best use the endowment funds, the college will also pay special attention to sustainability and ethics. "We are going to honor Lonnie's legacy and his core values by focusing on sustainability and ethical business practices. There will be a major symposium on sustainability this spring," said Weiss.
