Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity Theta Theta Chapter Volume 4, Issue 3 September 3, 2009

Two Complete Summer Push Events Two members of the Theta Theta chapter arrived in front of the United States Capitol in Washington D.C. on the morning of August 15, 2009 to a crowd of supporters who made the journey to the Nation’s Capitol to celebrate their life changing summers. Undergraduates Ryan Novak (Journey of Hope), and Josh Mosqueda (Build America) completed the final leg of their trips welcomed by family, and fellow alumni. Greg Buehner (#6), Cody Gremore (#19), Jared Hansen (#26), and David Hartwig (#35) gave both men a warm welcome on the west lawn of the Capitol grounds that August morning. For Brother Novak, his journey took him over 3,000 miles from San Francisco. Along the way, Brother Novak raised over

$5,000 for people with disabilities, and participated in countless number of friendship visits along

Homecoming Update As we watch the gathering storm on the horizon known as College Football moving closer to us, it is only natural for all of us to be anxious for the season to start. In four short days, the Iowa Hawkeyes will take the field at Historic Kinnick Stadium for the 79th season. Also, as we’ve been highlighting for the past four months, it is that time of the year to reunite as alumni for the Homecoming celebration. For those who will be able to make it into Iowa City by 8:30 PM on October 9, the chapter will be hosting a dinner with alumni at the house. This provides an excellent opportunity for us to connect with current undergraduates, and get caught up on what is happening in the chapter currently. Following dinner, alumni are invited to a cocktail hour at Martini’s. Arrival

at Martini’s is set for 10:30 PM for a brief opportunity to celebrate as just alumni. Everyone is reminded to get ample amount of sleep in preparation for the Homecoming Football game. Brother Blazek will host his usual tailgate in the southeast lot of the Dental Parking Lot starting at 6 AM for those who wish to arrive early. There will be plenty of food ranging from breakfast items to common tailgate staples. Please bring $5 to compensate Brady for the food costs, and bring whatever beverages you wish. The football game starts at 7 PM against the Michigan Wolverines. Sunday morning has brunch planned at Iowa River Power Company at 11 AM, and there will be a BOAA meeting at 5 PM. Members are encouraged to attend chapter meeting at 7 PM if they wish.

his journey. For Brother Mosqueda, his journey began in

Clevleand, and took him to six different camps that support people with disabilities. Brother Mosqueda raised over $3,500 for people with disabilities, and built several accessible structures at the camps he visited. Both men currently hold Executive Council positions, and bring their excitement, and experiences back to the current members of the Theta Theta Chapter. Along with the Theta Theta alumni, several members from past Journey of Hope and Build America teams also welcomed these men into the Nation’s Capitol. Brother Buehner joined the cyclists in a Pi Alpha ride along that took former Journey of Hope riders from Richmond, VA into Washington D.C. Congratulations to all these men.

Where’s the Game on At? With so many alumni now living in common areas, it is important to highlight places to watch Iowa Football games if you are not living in Iowa City. Chicago, IL: Merkle’s Bar and Grill at 3516 N Clark St hosts the Chicago I-Club, and all Hawkeye’s fans. They feature a special for all you can eat/drink for $25 that lasts throughout the game. Merkle’s is very convenient to get to, as it is just off the Red Line’s Addison stop near Wrigley Field. Brother’s Dornbier and Hartwig will be present for all games that they are not in Iowa City for. Denver, CO: The Sports Column at 1930 Blake St. is the home of the Denver I-Club for all Hawkeye games. Ironically, this bar is modeled after the Iowa City location, with a second floor, and no drunk freshmen in it. Those alumni living in

the Denver area are encouraged to watch the Iowa games here, as it has great specials and prize opportunities sponsored by the Denver I-Club. Washington D.C.: The Capital Area I-Club sponsors all Iowa Football games at the Crystal City Sports Pub at 529 23rd Street in Arlington, VA. Brothers Gremore and Goodrich will likely be in attendance for the spectacular Iowa Football season to watch the Hawkeyes in their march to January. Charlotte, NC: Brother Buehner heads the Charlotte IClub, and has a new location to watch Iowa Football games at Ed’s Tavern, 2200 Park Road. While Brother Buehner is the only alumnus living in the Charlotte area, it is a hot spot for visits by our alumni, and everyone is encouraged to support Brother Buehner’s effort.

He is the primary contact between the Housing Corporation and the chapter. Following his year of service to the chapter, Brother Hansen intends to fill a position in Chicago, IL and join the countless number of alumni who currently are residing in the Windy City. 2009 Iowa Hawkeye Football Preview This year highlights one of the best potential season for the Iowa Hawkeyes since 2006, and we all know how that season ended (the miserable offsides call against Florida in the Outback Bowl). Junior Quarterback, Ricky Stanzi returns to lead the Hawkeyes after an amazing season in Date

2008, which highlighted wins against Penn State and South Carolina in the Outback Bowl. In the offseason, Stanzi put on 25 pounds and looks like a beast if you didn’t see the Iowa Football Preview on the Big Ten Network. While we lost our Doak Walker winning Running Back,

Shonn Greene and his replacement, Jewel Hampton, Iowa still fields an impressive group at tailback. Junior Paki O’Meara, and Redshirt Freshmen Adam Robinson and Jeff Brinson are all in the mix to fill the number one slot on the depth chart.

Hoeger’s Prediction

Brother’s Hartwig and Hoeger have spent the summer eagerly scouring the college football blogs, for previews of the 2009 Iowa Hawkeye Football team. The two weigh in on their thoughts for how the 2009 season will play out:

BOAA Meeting Notes Courtesy of Stephen Prideaux (Chapter Advisor) The 2009 school year brings new energy to members of the Theta Theta Chapter. With two members of the chapter completing summer Push events, these men return with a passion for Pi Kappa Phi that they intend to pass on to current members of the chapter. It also marks a new year for members of the Theta Theta Board of Alumni Advisors. The board convened on Sunday, August 30, 2009 to discuss issues that will face the chapter in the coming months. I am happy to report that 2009 looks to be a great year for members of the chapter, as many younger members are set to lead the chapter until the end of 2009. The board discussed plans for the new House Director, Jared Hansen, and how he will play a crucial role in helping current members living in the chapter structure.

These men will benefit greatly from Brother Hansen’s extensive experience in the chapter, and will exemplify the ideals that are the foundation of Pi Kappa Phi. We welcomed Brother Duffy to the board, in his new role as the Standards Board Alumni Advisor. Brother Duffy will provide guidance to the board, and help revitalize its function within the chapter. Brother Duffy is looking forward to bringing back the spirit of productive outcomes from hearings, in our goal to help everyone become better men. We also welcomed Brother Hartwig to the board, in his role as the Alumni Communications Chair. Brother Hartwig detailed his goals of continuing our involvement with alumni of the chapter. He will be responsible for producing monthly newsletters, and keeping our records up to date as alumni move from one city to the next. He will also play

a vital role in assisting Brother Blazek with planning, and executing alumni events throughout the coming year. Other important notes from the meeting included an update from Curt Herzog, Director of Chapter Development at Pi Kappa Phi Nationals. Brother Herzog spent a week with the current members of the chapter assisting them with preparing for recruitment week. He brought back the ideals of value based recruitment, and had several tough conversations with members of the chapter regarding how they live the values of Pi Kappa Phi on a daily basis. He was able to provide a great perspective from outside of the chapter, and has had an immediate impact upon the members he was able to sit down with. Financial Advisor, Brother Lee, detailed the state of the chapter’s finances as they begin a new year. Among those high-

lights were the use of Brother Hansen to mitigate any issues with delinquent rent. Brother Buehner updated members of the board with information on the chapter structure, including a new three year lease that was signed over the summer. This will guarantee housing for the chapter through 2012 at 202 Ellis Ave. It also marks four years of residence at 202 Ellis. Jake Adrian detailed upcoming opportunities for Push Events, and Accessability project opportunities. He intends to work closely with Push Chair, Aaron Jacobson-Swanson to brainstorm new fundraising ideas, including the adaptation of Dance Marathon’s canning system. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at any time.
