Crack down on crime and Ranger services anti social behaviour now available The Town of Port Hedland has identified domestic violence, anti-social behaviour, volume crime and reporting of crime as the key priority issues to address in the next three years through the 2010-2013 Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan (2010-2013 CS & CP Plan).

In 2003, the Town of Port Hedland and the Office of Crime Prevention formed a Community Safety and Crime Prevention partnership as part of State Government’s initiative to monitor crime and improve community safety.

“Council is wholly supportive of this plan which will see the implementation of strategies and initiatives to deter crime and anti-social behaviour, resulting in safe community residents are happy and proud to call their home,” said Mayor Kelly Howlett.

Strategies of the 2010 – 2013 CS & CP Plan include investigating the possibility of a Family Violence Court, developing and implementing a Port Hedland Alcohol and Management Strategy and Implementation Plan and supporting and implementing the Hedland

Family Violence Action Plan.

One strategy which has been implemented is the Hedland Safety Network website, www. hedlandsafetynetwork.com. au, which aims to inform and educate residents on how to keep their home and community safe as well as updating them on the latest crime information and statistics.

State Government allows expansion for Aboriginal health centre The State Government has made an agreement with the Wirraka Maya Health Service (WMHS) in Port Hedland to allow for expansion of their health centre..

Mr Grylls approved the conditional transfer of the 3,411sqm lot based immediately adjacent to the current WMHS Health Centre for use in their development plans.

Conditions of the sale preserve the use of the land as a health centre.

“Wirraka Maya Health Service provide a vital service to the community and their expansion proposals will allow them to attract further doctors and improve the services

already offered,” he said.

“Without this agreement, development would have been unable to progress and associated improvements in the delivery of health services to Aboriginal people would have been lost.”

The centre complements health services provided by the Department of Health and provides for the provision of primary and social health services for Aboriginal people throughout the Port and South Hedland region and surrounding areas.

The not-for-profit organisation is funded by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Services which provides

for the delivery of health services.

Any remaining funds are placed in reserve for capital growth, in particular for a new health clinic.

WMHS previously received $90,000 in Royalties for Regions funding for an Aboriginal Oral and Dental Health program.

The program was funded by the Regional Grants Scheme (RGS) through the Pilbara Development Commission.

The RGS is a State Government Royalties for Regions initiative which aims to improve services in regional Western Australia.

seven days a week The Town’s Ranger Services have commenced regular weekend and public holiday services as a result of recent community survey feedback, which indicated a need for increased coverage over these periods.

Ranger services will focus on a broad range of issues including stray dogs, litter, drinking issues in parks and reserves and landfill patrols.

“The

introduction

of

additional ranger services shows members of the community their feedback is important to Council and the Town of Port Hedland and it can result in improved services and facilities for the community,” said Mayor Kelly Howlett.

The Duty Ranger will be available from 8am to 5pm on weekends and public holidays and can be contacted on 9158 9741.

Hedland needs help for Tidy Town awards 2011 The Town of Port Hedland is encouraging local residents to participate in this year’s search for the Tidy Town’s Sustainable Community.

The competition focuses on community spirit – towns are not only judged on tidiness and beautification, but also on community projects concentrating on recycling, litter prevention and water conservation, as well as projects which encourage community involvement and celebration of cultural heritage.

“Hedland has a wonderful reputation as having one of the tidiest towns and a friendly and involved community – it would be great to see the Hedland community come together and provide us with material for this year’s submission and continue our reputation of being a sustainable town,” said Mayor Kelly Howlett.

Hedland was awarded the State Winner in 2009, as well as winning the Community Action, Recycling and Waste Management and Enhancing Cultural Identity Award.

Last year the town won the Enhancing Cultural Heritage and Water Conservation Award, and Port and South Hedland was praised by the judges for lifting the bar across the entire Pilbara region.

The Town is seeking members of the community to assist in the compilation of the 2011 Tidy Town submission, so if you have contributed or know of someone that has held an event or activity which has contributed to ensuring the town’s sustainability, or would like to join the submission committee, please contact Community Development Officer Sheila Cleaver on 9158 9387 or email cdo@porthedland.wa.gov. au.

Create ‘n’ Connect Last week, Monika Page wrote about life in the Pilbara.

Very true! It is a challenge up here, finding different ways to keep the kids occupied while you have an hour (or three) with your girlfriends.

The heat is always a factor and then, even when you are indoors, where can you catch up while the kids play busily somewhere nearby?

Is Macca’s really our only option? Can I say no, its not.

About 30 ladies, of all ages and stages in life, mostly mums, take advantage of the group in town, called Create ‘n’ Connect, where you have two hours each Wed morning to catch up with girlfriends, be crafty if you feel like it, or just have cappuccino and cake.

All for $5.

And your child is in the next room being lovingly cared for and playing happily in a great creche with other kids, also for only $5.

This group is well organised and run by friendly, enthusiastic ladies who are making the most of life in Karratha.

It has been running for over 20 years!

And many women who have left town, have said it was their sanity.

Free Weekly 12 February 2011 A packing box is the symbol of humanity’s determination to organise that which it hasn’t got around to for the last millennium.

Or it’s for random junk.

Either way, the packing box accompanies moving.

And, as we farewell the ABC’s Andrew Collins and his family, we are reminded that moving brings little surprises of its own…

Packing It As the ultimately finicky and organised type, she would not believe the press and he would not believe the hype that to get somebody in to do the packing was all right.

He said, “Nope, cannot afford it.”

She said, “Do it in a night.”

“Ta dah!” he put his arm about her, wiping off his sweat.

“We are legends, superstars, more to the point, we’re done!” You bet.

And they stood amongst the silence of the boxes’ towering threat as amidst the great brown castle sounded something like regret…

Bok-ekkkk. Bok-ekkkk.

“How ‘bout,” she said with sense, “we chuck the kids’ toys all in here,” as he packing taped the boxes and forgot to drink his beer and so in went lights and buzzers, teacups pink and teapots clear, every truck and train and block, every thing which pings the ear,

And their looks were stunted horror as the sound screeched from the ground and they quick began to wonder where this sound might well be found.

In amidst the thousand boxes deep within it did resound and he heard her swear prolific as his blood thumped round and round.

Then she heard it. There it was and there she found the microwave, sitting all alone behind the rubble, unboxed barricade and she opened it to find it and to end this mad charade her egg timer - clucking chicken done its time and on parade.

every cute thing, wrapped in bubbles, every CD stacked and packed, here a loose spoon off the table, there a stray coathanger whacked, ‘til the sun was dawning yawning and the next door’s chicken clacked, but unlike its single egg neither our two had actually…cracked.

And the answer? It was simple: They must unpack every box, every stupid household item, every jewel and single sock, every shell and vase and ruddy muddy gumboot, every jock.

Three hours later, torment on her face, before he’d thrown a rock…

Bok-ekkk. Bok-ekkkk.

And the husband and his wife, with exhaustion and great thirst, took a lesson from this moment before into tears both burst, that when packing and upstacking when that moving time’s the worst is quite easily and simply… take the batteries out first.

Our meeting will begin sharp at 7.00pm with an AGM to place all Committee Members.

All positions on the Committee will be vacant and nominations for all positions will be called for. Nomination forms and committee position descriptions will be available on the night.

Following the AGM will be discussion of Club events – fees, uniforms, teams, coaches and KNA event dates.

Registration forms will be available to collect after the Meeting has finished.

Living in the Pilbara is beautiful in winter.

And it doesn’t seem so bad in December.

But by March everyone, especially those with small children, starts getting just a little crazy from the heat.

This year we had good intentions of saving money by skipping an overseas holiday.

But one day, my husband came home to find a very frazzled woman waiting for him at his front door.

Unfortunately for him he had not come to the wrong house and it was I, his wife, looking straight into his eyes saying in an eerily calm voice “We are going on a holiday.

Preferably somewhere cold. Like Russia.”

Pre-parenthood we had been on many holidays and all have been stressful.

See, it’s difficult to pick which cocktail to drink

first.

And it’s stressful to pick whether to shop first or see the sights (why not do both, we’ve got all day!).

It’s so stressful that we book in daily massages.

Now holidays seem even more stressful.

Sadly, it’s got nothing to do with choosing alcoholic beverages.

Before we even get on a plane we begin to wonder, did I bring enough nappies? (just in case we reach our destination and find out people don’t reproduce there).

Did I bring enough baby food? (just in case my son who eats everything decides to become a gluten-free vegan and loses ten kilo’s from his 10.4kg frame).

Most importantly, will two pairs of underwear suffice for two weeks because I have no room left in my suitcase for anything other than my son’s favourite toys.

Presuming the airline

lets us on with our pram/ portacot/baby seat (excess luggage charges? Really?

I’ve never heard of them you innocently say at check-in) the next question is to work out what my 14 month old is actually going to do for ten hours.

Because I’ll be watching the in-flight movie and popping pretzels so I’ll be busy.

I’ve bought new books, new toys and we are bringing a portable dvd player with Wiggles on a loop.

I suspect it won’t be enough.

My beautiful son is actually a very well behaved boy (apart from when I refuse to buy him a chocolate at the shopping centre, but that’s another story) but even he may be bored after ten hours.

So if you see a set of frazzled parents exclaiming “why didn’t we just drive to Exmouth?!”, come around to seat 12B and say hi.

Shire President’s Flood Appeal reaches half way target

Hedland celebrates Australia Day with a bang The Town of Port Hedland celebrated their belated Australia Day Celebrations on 6th February at the Civic Centre Gardens and Koombana Lookout with a fantastic turn out.

The evenings events began at the Koombana Lookout with the Thong Throwing Competition which was shortly followed by the highly anticipated Hedland's Best Pie Competition.

There was plenty going on over at the Civic Centre Gardens with the Australian Acoustic Sessions featuring local artists Sarah Ramirez, Brad Holder and Lorna Secrett as well as Brooke Cuthbertson performing the National Anthem.

The Australian Short Film Festival began at 7pm and feature Artists Prita Grealy and Andrew Winton Duo performed to the crowd just before the firework display

A recent donation of $10,000 from the Wickham OB Social Club to the Shire President’s Flood Appeal has brought the total up to the half way target with $25,000 now in the bank.

Shire of Roebourne president Nicole Lockwood thanked the club for its generous donation.

“This incredible donation has certainly reinvigorated the appeal and I urge anyone who may be considering donating to the cause to do so now,” Councillor Lockwood said.

Cr Lockwood urged local residents to give generously and show people in the flood devastated regions that we are a ‘community who cares’.

“With a combined damage bill in the billions the financial cost of rebuilding communities affected by the floods in Carnarvon and Queensland is almost impossible to imagine,” she said.

“The Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry is also looking for the Shire of Roebourne’s most generous locallyowned business and will award a free 12-month membership to the business who digs the deepest.”

As well raising funds for the flood victims in Queensland, the Shire of Roebourne helped sponsor a team of volunteers from the Swan District Football Club to help clean up in the flood ravaged areas.

“The Shire helped sponsor 64 players, coaches and support staff from the Swan Districts Football Club players, who travelled to floodaffected Queensland last week,” Cr Lockwood said.

“The group arrived in the Brisbane suburb of Sherwood and saw first-hand the damage caused by the floods.

“They spent five nights getting their hands dirty helping out with the clean-up effort and were overwhelmed at just how humble and appreciative the Sherwood locals were.”

Donations to the Shire President’s Flood Appeal can be made in-person at the Westpac Bank, the Shire of Roebourne Administration Offices or the Pilbara News. Collection tins will be available at selected retailers in Centro Karratha. Donations over $2 are tax deductible.

Rio Tinto has approved a US$933 million investment (Rio Tinto share 100%) to extend the life of the Marandoo iron ore mine by 16 years to 2030.

Rio Tinto chief executive Iron Ore and Australia, Sam Walsh said the Marandoo extension plays an important role in sustaining the Pilbara operations' annual capacity rate, complementing the major expansion programmes now underway.

Located 35km north east of the town of Tom Price, the project will extend the Marandoo mine life at its current mining rate of 15 million tonnes a year by developing the adjacent reserves below the water table.

Sam Walsh said, "With a high iron and low phosphorus content, Marandoo's Marra Mamba ore assists in maintaining the Pilbara Blend grade requirements and maximising the value of our integrated Pilbara operations.

• Marandoo Iron Ore Mine "It also underlines our ability to develop projects to sustain tonnage at the same time as expanding our overall production capability."

One component of the Marandoo project is a water management strategy to manage the operation's dewatering, including priority water delivery to the Tom Price township and mine operations, the reinjection of water into the Southern Fortescue

borefield to the north and a proposed irrigated agriculture scheme.

The project includes the construction of a wet processing plant and on-site facilities, an accommodation village and construction camp and additional mining fleet.

The project requires a number of Government and regulatory approvals, all of which have been received or are progressing well and on schedule.

POLICEWATCH Regional Grants Scheme 2010-11 Funding Round Now Open The Pilbara Development Commission is seeking applications for 2010-11 Royalties for Regions, Regional Grants Scheme.

Regional Grants Scheme funding is for community, public and private organisations to improve and develop infrastructure and services in the regions.

Funding is available for grants of $5,000 and over, for projects starting after 1 July 2011.

When to know to report a noisy neighbour

Karratha Police receive many phone calls from the public advising us that their neighbour or someone in the street is having a party with loud music that is keeping their children awake.

We will attend these jobs to make a decision if the noise is unreasonable or not.

Other members of the public seem to be confused about when they can report loud parties or noisy neighbours to the police.

The noise must be deemed unreasonable before police will attend.

We will determine if a noise is unreasonable by doing one of the following three methods, we will

park outside the residence and listen from our vehicle, we will park 100 meters away or we will stand on the fence line of the property where the noise is being emitted.

Common sense prevails, if the noise is deemed unreasonable for the time of day or night then we will attend and tell the owner to stop whatever the noise is.

A rough estimate of unreasonable noise is as follows.

Between 7am and 7pm noise should not exceed that emitted by a standard garden appliance (lawn mower); between 7pm and 10pm noise should not exceed raised voices (not shouting); and between 10pm and 7am noise

should not exceed normal speaking voices and after midnight music should not be clearly audible.

If you believe the noise is unreasonable then call the Police, and if we agree we will enter the premises of where the noise is coming from and stop it.

If we attend and we do not believe the noise is unreasonable then we will let the caller know.

If we have asked the occupant to cease the noise and it continues then we will return and seize all the equipment that is making the noise.

Karratha has a diverse population with a high number of shift workers therefore we need to all respect the community in the day and the night.

Parcel of land to transfer to Eastern Guruma people Following a proposal from the Eastern Guruma people to purchase land, Regional Development and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls has agreed to transfer a parcel of land from Tom Price town site.

Mr Grylls said the transfer was agreed upon to allow for development.

“Transferring this lot to the Eastern Guruma

people will enable them to progress a mixed-use business development which will support their economic development aspirations,” he said.

With the State Government’s Royalties for Regions $1billion Pilbara Cities Initiative well under way, the Minister said it was an opportune time for the Eastern Guruma people to receive this land.

“Tom Price is a community set to be transformed under the Pilbara Cities Initiative so it is a terrific time for the Eastern Guruma people to progress their proposed development in the town site,” Mr Grylls said.

“The initiative aims to modernise and transform Pilbara communities like Tom Price, which will benefit

from a town centre revitalisation.”

API Management Pty Ltd Anketell Point Port Development Proposal (20 December 2010 – 28 February 2011) API Management Pty Ltd (API) is proposing to implement the Anketell Point Port Development Proposal (the Proposal) at Anketell Point, approximately 25 km north east of Karratha, Western Australia. The proposal involves the establishment and operation of a multi-user deep water port including iron ore stockpiling, transfer and ship loading facilities.

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) determined that the Proposal required assessment at the level of Public Environmental Review (PER) under the Western Australian Environment Protection Act 1986. The then Commonwealth Minister for Environment Protection, Heritage and the Arts determined that the Proposal (EPBC2009/5120) is a controlled action under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act), and is to be assessed by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (DSEWPaC) at the level of Public Environment Report (draft PER).

The controlling provisions under the EPBC Act are: • Sections 18 and 18A (listed threatened species and communities); • Sections 20 and 20A (listed migratory species); and • Sections 23 and 24A (Commonwealth marine area).

A coordinated assessment under both the EP Act and the EPBC Act is to be undertaken for this Proposal, based on the one environmental assessment document. API has prepared and published for public review a PER in accordance with Western Australian Government procedures under the EP Act. Celebrating 30 years of Community Arts and Learning in Karratha Thirty years ago a group of people interested in art, education and cultural activities got together to build their dream of a space dedicated for communitybased learning.

Their efforts produced the buildings that are now known as the Karratha Arts and Learning Centre (KALC).

This February 18th marks the 30th Anniversary of the centre, and all community members are invited to join in the celebrations!

Today the centre’s activities include pottery, quilting and social sewing, scrap booking and card making, band practice and the Pilbara Writer’s Group.

A commitment to their job saw seven staff from St Luke’s college bunker down at the Dampier Camp School with 96 very energetic and excited Year 8 students last week...all in the name of education.

In a three day camp that would often test the resolve of most parents, the staff and Year 12 student house leaders used the time to enable their newest students to form friendships, work together as a group and of course, as a fun preparation for life at high school.

St Luke’s College Principal Tom Kavanagh said the camp was filled with activities to encourage team building, promote friendships and give the students an opportunity to “get to know” each other in a fun, relaxed environment.

“At St Luke’s we also feel acquiring an appreciation of the emotional and spiritual welfare as well as the physical is of the utmost importance.

The students will learn and appreciate each other

and be prepared to accept all differences,” he said.

Year 12 students who themselves once enjoyed the benefits of the Year 8 camp said it is a time when friendships form on the camp, and usually stay strong through five years of schooling.

“It’s a great experience to bond plus it gets the kids out of their comfort zone,” said Scott Wilson.

Attending the camp in a support role was a little reflective for Jenieann Davenport who was appreciative of her teachers.

“I know what it feels like to want the kids to settle down...I feel sorry for those that looked after us,’ she giggled.

Mr Kavanagh said the staff commitment to care for students over the three days was a 24 hour job.

“As principal I must thank them publically for their devotion to their profession and also to their students.”

Party animals celebrate 8 years of SAFE

By Kristen Cookson The party animals were let loose on Saturday 5 February as local organisation SAFE (Saving Animals From Euthanasia) celebrated their 8th birthday at The Icon.

SAFE, a not-for-profit organisation was founded by Karratha local Sue Hedley back in 2003 and now eight years on the organisation has branched out to another nine locations across WA. Sue began SAFE after noticing there was a need for an animal rescue organistion in the Pilbara.

“I worked in quite a few different jobs in the 20 years that I have lived in Karratha but whilst working for the Australian Bureau of Statistics travelling through the Pilbara I kept finding homeless animals in need and could not turn away, I had to do something about it,” she said.

“I could never have imagined how big it would grow across the state and the magnitude of the number of animals that we are saving.”

SAFE’s operation focuses on the rescue and rehoming of homeless pets.

Foster carers help out by temporarily looking after animals until they find a permanent home.

Fostering has so many benefits and perfect for those who wish to look after an animal without the

responsibility of having a pet on a permanent basis.

SAFE curently has over 60 cats and kittens and 25 dogs in their care but thankfully are all currently fostered until they find a new home.“ I myself at the Pilbara Echo have helped out with fostering by taking on a beautiful dog called Opal.

On the day of the party Sue and her hard working volunteers began the celebrations at the SAFE

headquartersbefore heading to The Icon where they enjoyed lunch.

“The friendly atmosphere was punctuated with very appropriate music “Who let the dogs out!!” which got everyone moving!” Sue said.

“John Conway; The Icons Head Chef provided superb starter platters decorated in paw prints.”

A fitting cake was also supplied as a gift from Baker Tarren Catlin from Bakers Temptation.

Pilbara Olive Pythons As the name suggests this python is only found in the Pilbara and is a sub species of the Olive Python family that is found right across the tropical north, including Queensland.

Our Pilbara Olive Pythons are reported to grow to 6.5 metres but the average size is 3-4 metres.

For anyone having the privilege of seeing one of these pythons in the wild, they will agree they are a majestic and impressive snake, and one with a very secretive nature.

These snakes spend most of their time in rock crevices to avoid the sun, coming out in the evening to hunt.

They inhabit ravines, gorges and rocky gullies with deep crevices and waterholes that do not dry up.

Waterholes are important to these snakes as they are ambush

hunters, who lay and wait for food around the water source.

Their eyes have vertical pupils like a cat giving good night vision.

Between 2001 and 2005, five snakes were tracked on the Burrup Peninsula (for the Hedland readers it’s near Dampier) by implanted radio transmitters to monitor the snake’s movements.

Funding was obtained via a grant from the Threatened Species Network Program and carried out by members of the Nickol Bay Naturalist Club, with assistance from CALM (now DEC).

On quite a few occasions the snakes were found in ambush positions along the euro trails or near water holes where they had their head held in the ‘S’ shape strike position.

When she was found 13 days later the bulge had disappeared.

When not hunting the snakes were found draped over the rocks absorbing the days radiant heat.

It has been noted that the Olive Pythons in general, are a remarkably tolerant snake with a placid temperament.

Oliver proved to be a very tolerant snake and at one point, just as curious about his trackers as they were of him.

House lovers and clubbers alike are set for an electrifying night as The Aston Shuffle get ready to perform at the Karratha Tavern on 19 February thanks to organiser DJ Frankie Button.

The Aston Shuffle, made up of Canberra based DJs and electronic producers Mikah Freeman and Vance Musgrove, first came into the limelight in 2006 with remixes such as Claude VonStroke’s "The Whistler", Rocket Men's "Candy" and Chris Lake’s "Carry Me Away” and have since remixed many more.

They also have released many of their own singles including ‘For Everyone’, ‘Stomp Yo Shoes’ and ‘Your Love’ and mixed various compilations for Ministry of Sound.

They’ve toured up and around Australia, but have only visited as far as Perth and Freemantle in WA and in 2008 toured around Europe visiting the UK, Milan, Vienna and the clubbing capital Ibiza.

In 2009 they were voted number 3 DJs in Australia by Sony InTheMix50 and in 2010 were voted number one.

Now in 2011, as well as the release of a new album The Aston Shuffle have taken over the Friday Night Dance Show on Triple J from 10pm each week.

Musgrove said they always aim at producing unique music that will stand out in todays dance scene but at the same time fun plays a major factor to these guys.

“The one thing we always try to do is to keep things fun,” Musgrove said.

“A a sense of fun and a sense of musicality.”

“Dance music can get a bit aggressive sometimes, a little

bit non musical or a little bit tough so we try to keep it non serious.”

Musgrove explained that whilst making themselves known, fellow Australian DJ AJAX was a huge influence on them, as well UK DJ Erol Alkan.

“They can play a bunch of different styles, they’re about playing good music rather than good music of a particular genre,” he said.

“A lot of DJs can get stuck into playing just one style of music and we’ve always tried to play a lot of different things rather than just one style.”

“Versatile DJs are the type of guys that we tend to look up to” Musgrove said.

Having just finished their recent album the pair are set to take a break from writing and recording and focus on their live shows including various regional gigs.

“The regional shows are something we really love doing just because as big and exciting as the major city stuff is, for people in those very regional places, they don’t get that stuff so often so when it does come the vibe is always amazing,” Musgrove explained.

“The excitement and energy

that comes when we play those regional shows is better than major cities a lot of the time, so it’s is something we’ve always tried to have a real emphasis on and make sure we do a lot of, so we’re super excited about coming to Karratha.”

Organiser DJ Frankie Button said he has played with The Aston Shuffle before at the Ministry of Sound annual event in 2010.

"They are very high energy, they really go for it on stage, they're uplifting, intense and all up they have a real party vibe,” Frankie said.

Musgrove said the crowd is to expect fun, happy good time party music.

“They’ll be some of the stuff that you might be hearing on our Triple J show and we’ll definitely play some of our new album stuff which hasn’t quite been heard that much yet and also a bunch of classic Aston Shuffle stuff as well” he said.

DJs Frankie Button, Fl3ggless and Panda will all be playing on the night also.

Cancer support group now available in Karratha The Karratha Cancer Support Group (KCSG) are introducing a monthly cancer support group for those effected by cancer, including family and friends.

The new support group will be held each month at the Nickol Bay Hospital on every last Wednesday of the month with the first session being held on 23 February, 7pm.

The sessions will be run by founder of the KCSG Michelle Louis.

Michelle and husband Greg, along with many volunteers have raised extensive funds for the KCSG through many fundraisers such as Pink Ribbon Day and the annual Boobs and Balls event.

It wasn’t that long ago that I started studying printmaking and I still find now that people tend to fall into three categories when you mention that you are into linocuts.

The first category has no idea at all what printmaking is (me two years ago).

To bring these people up to speed, printmaking is an art form consisting of the production of images, usually on paper but occasionally on fabric, plastic etc, by various techniques of multiplication.

Linocuts in particular are kind of like a stamp principle – take a design, carve it out, ink it up and print it on paper, repeating if desired.

Back to the categories of people though, the second category straight away reminisce about their linocut high school experiences and how they loved the outcomes but how hard the lino was to work with, and isn’t it crazy that students were trusted with those carving tools in the first place.

Now I didn’t get to do linocuts in high school and I am pretty sure it wasn’t because of the carving tools as we had plenty of weapons available to us in woodworks.

However, the first time I studied printmaking at the TAFE it was with lino.

So even though I was a tertiary student I can echo what every secondary school student thought – this sucks.

I don’t know how many times I cut myself and I could never take corners in the right way so rather than smooth cuts I had some pretty serious gouges.

Besides this there was the terrible ache in my wrists – linocuts are hard work.

Then one day when I was browsing in a local arts and craft store I came across a strange looking substance sitting next to the lino in the art section.

It was the same size as the lino, same shape, same thickness but it was rubbery.

I had no idea what it was but I thought I’ve

got nothing to lose (my wrists were still sore at that point) so I bought a sheet and took it home.

Oh my goodness.

The joy, the relief, the absolute pleasure at just having the carving tools wiz around the surface, going in the direction that I want them to with so little effort that I can carve a whole sheet in one sitting.

I had discovered Ezy Carve.

I did try and research Ezy Carve for this article because I am aware that I sound like an advert and Ezy Carve must be a brand after all.

However my trusty information source (Google!) didn’t turn up much information at all.

Perhaps it is enough just to know that Ezy Carve is out there (at any reputable art supplies store costing between $7 - $10 for a sheet 30 x 30cm in size) just waiting for future printmakers to find it and treasure it as I now do.

Then they too will fall into that third, and may I suggest exclusive group, who are out there trying to make the world a better place, one print at a time.

Community input allows for expansion of Cemetery Beach Park Results from the Cemetery Beach Park Community Survey have assisted the Town of Port Hedland in finalising the design brief for the Cemetery Beach Community Park Expansion.

Feedback from the survey revealed local residents considered additional shade/ shelters, BBQ facilities, extended lawn area and an improved playground some of the priority issues which needed to be included in the design scope.

At the Ordinary Council Meeting on Thursday 27 January, Council supported the following elements to be included in the design scope: shade/shelters, pavilion, barbecues and seating; turtle-friendly lighting; extended lawn areas; parking and vehicle separation from play areas; improve existing playground for more toddler friendly activities, and parent’s space; adventure playground; linear boardwalk to coastal edge mainly west; artwork integration; and additional plants and trees.

In 2010 the Town of Port Hedland conducted community consultation with regards to the

Cemetery Beach Park Expansion, with local schools, aboriginal communities and sporting groups included in the consultation process.

A free community ‘Fun Day’ was also held, as well as a Saturday morning session at the South Hedland Shopping Centre.

The Cemetery Beach Community Park Expansion is a joint project between BHP Billiton, Royalties for Regions and Town of Port Hedland.

Construction for improvement and beautification of the park first commenced in 2006/2007 and has since become a popular foreshore location for residents and tourists.

The aim of the project is to provide additional facilities for the community and tourists and has been marked as a capital project for 2010/2011.

BHP Billiton has agreed to contribute $1.5 million towards the project as part of the BHP Billiton and Town of Port Hedland working partnership; with Royalties for Regions also contributing $1.5 million.

Port Hedland Utilities geared up for achieving Pilbara city status Over 100 guests attended the Town of Port Hedland’s first 2011 Gearing Up event on Wednesday 2 February, focusing on current and future utility developments in the coming five years.

Guest partner organisations for this event were Water Corporation, Horizon Power, Main Roads WA and Telstra with local businesses RPS and BGC providing further information to guests about their utility-friendly products and services.

The main highlights from the presentations included the relocation of the Port Hedland Waste Water Treatment Plant to South Hedland, Water Corporations H2ome Smart Program, Great Northern Highway Realignment and increased telecommunications coverage from Telstra.

“We want members of the community to know that the Town is focused on fulfilling all its projects and goals, as outlined in its Strategic Plan and Hedland’s Future Today document, and this can only be achieved by forging strong

successful partnerships with government and private organisations and agencies,” said Mayor Kelly Howlett.

Mayor Howlett and Town CEO Paul Martin also briefly updated guests on the Town’s four major projects – Multi-Purpose Recreation Centre; JD Hardie Centre Redevelopment; Iconic Park Project and Wallwork Road Bridge.

“Gearing Up is aimed at keeping members of the community updated with issues concerning the town and how the Town of Port Hedland with its key partners and stakeholders are addressing them.

We encourage everyone, whether they attend these events or not, to let us know what they want to hear about as their feedback shapes each Gearing Up event we host,” said Mayor Kelly Howlett.

Previous topics addressed at Gearing Up have been the Town’s Strategic Plan for 20102015 and Land Partnerships and have included partner organisations Pilbara Cities, Landcorp and Jaxon.

Leadership skills and education lead the way for Karratha Soroptimist the Club’s new leadership and education focus.

Over several months last year SIKAD supported the Michael Leslie Foundation in mapping out the itinerary and contact details of its project to enable a small number of Indigenous young and elder women from Roebourne to develop their professional development and leadership skills through a tour through the USA. The women have returned to tell their tales including the impact the tour has had on their lives.

To hear about this inspirational project from some of the women and their coordinator, Fiona White-Hartig, please join SI-KAD members at 6.30pm at the Karratha International Hotel for dinner on WEDNESDAY, 2 March.

After an action-packed eighteen months at the helm of ABC North West, the dynamic Andrew Collins is moving on.

At their AGM in early February 2011, Soroptimists of Karratha and Districts (SI-KAD) set about reviewing their strategic plan and including the international focus objective of advancing women’s and girls’ access to leadership and education opportunities.

They also added supporting a South West Pacific Federation Project to improve maternal health and reduce child mortality in Papua New Guinea.

Along with its sustainability and climate change program now in its third year plus a range of other activities, it makes for a heady start to the New Year.

An invitation is extended to senior school students, tertiary students and women in general interested in learning more about, or becoming members of the Club to attend any of the business or dinner meetings.

By Kristen Cookson The youth of Pannwonica can now enjoy the use of a new skate park as Rio Tinto officially declared the Yannarie Park open on 8 February.

Local youths were invited to the launch to be the first to test out the new ramps as well as professional skaters Aaron Nannup and Harry Clarke.

Rio Tinto Management Officer Cyril Lockyer explained that the name Yannarie is the name of an Aboriginal tribe that once lived between Millstream and Yalleen Station.

Following introductions, Cyril Lockyer, a representative of the Robe River Kuruma and Kuruma Marthudunera people officially opened the park.

INFORMATION NIGHT The Karratha Netball Association will be hosting a general Netball Information Session on Tuesday, the 15th February at 7pm sharp at Welcome Lotteries House, Morse Court.

Any player, coach, umpire, parent, supporter or volunteer interested in participating in Netball within our community is welcome to attend to understand the direction of the KNA in 2011 and beyond.

After an initial consultation the project took over six months to complete including two months to build the park.

Rio Tinto’s Expansions Project Manager Rob Puglisi said they supported the project because they believed it was important to the children in the town and has proved to be very successful.

“It has been identified through community consultation there was also a need for more recreational facilities for children of all ages in Pannawonica” he said.

“Rio Tinto is glad to see the community has provided feedback that they are very happy with the new facilities.”

“Yannarie Park is being visited regularly and the facilities utilised every day, and the children seem to be enjoying the new skate park.”

As guests enjoyed the use of the new park and games organised by the Lifestyle Centre, it was also an opportunity for residents to see the new Emergency Management fatigue trailer.

The Emergency Management fatigue trailer was developed by Pannawonica Emergency Response Captain Bobby Whitton.

It was created for use on the North West Coastal Highway to provide free tea and coffee to road users, and their trailer has additional barbecue facilities.

It will also be used at community events to promote road safety messages and at major incidents, such as bush fires, to provide refreshments for emergency service personnel.

Launched on 25 January, the fatigue trailer is operated by volunteers who are passionate about fatigue management.

Representatives from road crash rescue will man the fatigue trailer during busy periods such as the Christmas and school holidays and long weekends.

Topics of interest include – Senior, Junior & Sub Junior competitions, Player Development, Umpiring programs, Coaching programs, NWNR Championships, Net-Set-Go!, KNA committees, Volunteer Management, KNA AGM and more!!

All Divisions including Seniors, Juniors, Sub-Juniors and Officials can collect individual and team nomination forms at this time.

Details of players without teams will be taken on this night.

Karratha swimmers hit the pool in Perth

Whilst the rest of the Karratha Amateur Swimming club were putting their club bathers away for a break over Christmas there were still seven dedicated swimmers hitting the pool.

They were training to compete in the Country Pennants being held at Challenge Stadium in Perth over the weekend of the 8th and 9th of January.

35 clubs were represented with a total of 382 competitors from around country WA competing.

The swimmers that attended from Karratha were Aletta Fowke, Amara Fowke, Finlay Moore, Lily Moore, Macie Bennetts, Keldon Wain and Ross Rann.

All seven swimmers had a fantastic meet, all the girls broke their personal best times, in fact the team broke 17 PB’s out of 27 swims between them, outstanding effort.

Three of the swimmers also managed to bring home medals.

Macie Bennetts came home with 4 medals, U12 Girls, Gold - 100m Freestyle, Gold - 100m Butterfly, Silver - 50m Butterfly, Bronze - 100m Backstroke.

Ross Rann headed home with 4 medals.

These were for 9 year old Boys, Gold - 100m Backstroke, Silver - 50m Backstroke, Silver – 50m Freestyle and Silver - 100m Freestyle.

And not to be outdone, Keldon Wain competed in the 8’s and Under where he had success in the 50m Backstroke taking out a silver medal, whilst missing the bronze by the narrowest of margins (100th of a second) in another.

The club is now back, training hard for two more major events on the calendar this season.

Over the long weekend in March the club is sending a team of approximately 25 swimmers to Country Pennants being held in Kambalda.

Due to high travel expenses the team is trying hard to raise money to help with these costs.

Over the next two Saturdays they will be holding a car wash and dog wash out on the lawn in front of Home Hardware.

So if you can’t find the time to wash your car or dog, please let us do it for you.

We will be there from 8:30am on Saturday, 19th and 26th of February.

Back at the club on Friday 4 February we had our first time trials for the second half of the season.

During the night we had two juniors in the Snapper Squad smash their PB’s.

Heath Collins in 50m Freestyle beat his PB by an impressive 7.5 seconds and Ted Stanley in 50m Backstroke betting his PB by an amazing 9.46 seconds.

A small memento was presented to them by coach Kylie Rann during training on Tuesday recognising their efforts, watch out Ian Thorpe.
