With all the thunderstorms and rain we have been getting lately, a lot of people have been testing out their cameras and techniques to capture the perfect shot. Matt and Shelley Sullivan have seen a lot of lightning and thought it would be challenging to capture such an exciting event, as Karratha gets really impressive storms in the Pilbara. “Why not try and photo it,” Matt said. This photo was taken on January 24, 2012 at a secret spot within 3kms of Karratha. The Sullivans used Canon 600D + 70-200mm

Demolish of the Victoria Hotel The Shire of Roebourne and the State Government’s development instrument, the DAP, have before it a development application to demolish the Victoria Hotel on Roe Street, Roebourne. The applicant plans to build FIFO accommodation. Of course the State Government would be in favour of such a development, anything to appease mining companies operating in the Pilbara. On first viewing, it appears the applicant has the wrong address on the plans. The proposed development seems destined for a location in Ascot or Burswood in the city of Perth. The applicant proposes that this development would change its use in 10 years time from FIFO accommodation to tourism accommodation. There are no lease agreements or guarantees in place that this will happen. Ultimately it is another template design from metropolitan Perth that will cost a fortune to air-condition and maintain. The running costs of such a building would be prohibitive for the locals own and operate, and be expensive accommodation for tourists and locals alike. As if the Pilbara needs more expensive accommodation? My other problem with this proposed development is the lack of cultural sensitivity for the area. To me, Roebourne is the cultural capital of the Pilbara and the best kept secret in Australia. It offers a place where Aboriginal people from the Pilbara can continue their cultural connections with country. Many Aboriginal people have been displaced from their homes of Port Hedland and Karratha and find themselves living in Roebourne.
The generosity of the people living in Roebourne is evident. They share what little they have with the broader community. This development does not symbolise the history and cultural heritage of the area. More recently the history of Roebourne was captured by visual artist and animator Sohan Areal Hayes. He was stunned by the “valuable culture” in Roebourne “that’s just being bulldozed”. Tearing down historic buildings in favour of inappropriate developments like this one is a good example of Mr Hayes’ reference to bulldozing in Roebourne. The applicant’s proposed development seems to ignore the history and cultural heritage of Roebourne and it shows. Roebourne is indeed a place for more development. It must be sympathetic to the rhythm and scale of existing buildings and be respectful of the cultural locality. Developers need encouragement to use local materials and designs from some of the Pilbara’s lasting buildings with their large verandahs, natural ventilation, pitched roofs and unimposing human scale. They should also be encourage to consult with the Traditional Owners to ensure developments are sympathetic to the long term cultural needs and local businesses of the community. Architects should not be rewarded for selecting a template design from metropolitan Perth and building it in the Pilbara. It’s the wrong building, the wrong use, on the wrong site. Please urge the Councillors of the Shire of Roebourne to vote against it. Julie Matheson
$39.2m for phone service Mobile phone coverage will be improved in the NW through the $39.2 million Royalties for Regions funding announced by the state government, benefiting tourism and further development as well as residents. North-West MLA Vince Catania said the Regional Mobile Communications Project would enable Western Australia’s regional, rural and remote communities and businesses to gain access to a selfsustainable and affordable mobile voice and wireless broadband service. “The WA Government and Telstra will deliver about $106million in value under the project to deploy new mobile communications infrastructure at 113 sites throughout the State,” he said. “These will be positioned along major roads and highways and at several regional communities. “Mobile phone coverage will be far improved and significantly boost access to next generation broadband services. “This should provide a further boost to North-West tourism and development because people in the modern era are more inclined to want total coverage for mobile phones while travelling.” Mr Catania said it wasn’t just personal use that would benefit, but the region’s public safety would also be improved. “Enhanced emergency radio and mobile telecommunication coverage will be a great asset to emergency services and WA Police in pursuit of their task,” he said.

Crawford Realty wins five prestigious awards • The KAC lights were destroyed in the tornado early last year
Lack of light means lack of training By Courtney Bertling The Karratha Aquatic Centre’s lighting was destroyed during the tornado in February last year and is still not fixed. Residents, swimmers and the local swimming club have expressed frustration about the lack of lighting, which has meant earlier closing times and less time for people to use the pool. Local swimmer Anouska Angorve is currently training for the Rottnest Swim on February 25 and says she is finding it extremely difficult to train due to the early closing times at the pool. “I am currently training for the Rottnest Swim and getting to the pool in time to do a reasonable training session is near on impossible,” she said. “My husband works past 5pm almost every night, as do most people in this town, and I have to wait for him to get home to do a tag team with our kids.” “I understand that it has got to do with the lights (which have not been fixed since the tornado) but it is disappointing how long it is taking to fix them.” “I still intend to swim after the Rottnest Swim I and would love the opportunity to swim later than 5 or 6.30pm.”
Shire of Roebourne CEO Collene Longmore said the Shire has been involved in a protracted dispute with its insurer in relation to a claim for the replacement of lighting. “The claim was lodged by Shire soon after the tornado struck but acknowledgement of a successful claim was only made by its insurer late last year,” she said. “Whilst the claim was being disputed, the Shire undertook a tender process and O’Donnell Griffin has now been appointed to replace the lighting.” “The Shire did have the option of funding the replacement of lighting from its own reserves, while the claim remained in dispute.” “However, the KAC will be permanently closed some time in 2013, once the Karratha Leisure complex is opened.” Ms Longmore said it is anticipated that new lighting at the KAC will be switched on sometime in April. “The hiring of lights was not considered an option because of the extensive technical specifications required to satisfy the Health Act for a Grade 1 Commercial swimming facility.” “Required angles and level of lighting could simply not be achieved.”

POLICEWATCH Boat trailers By Senior Constable Jason Geikie If you’re a small boat owner like I am you will understand that most of your headaches with repairs are usually the boat trailer. The trailer is typically the forgotten piece of equipment for maintenance, but in most instances the most important when you need to get somewhere. I was standing at the Dampier boat ramp one weekend checking boats when a vehicle towing a boat pulled into the ramp. As it turned to line up the ramp, one of its trailer wheels fell off and rolled away. Lucky enough the trailer was a dual axel trailer so no damage was caused to the boat or trailer. This vehicle had driven 20km to the boat ramp down a busy 100kph highway. If the wheel came off while travelling at that speed it may have hit and killed somebody. As we all know, after the big weekend out fishing, diving, sun and surf we all drive home, fillet the fish, clean the boat and get the kids showered. All while having that well deserved beer and watching the last few overs of the cricket. The trailer usually gets the old once over and is forgotten. As the driver of the vehicle it’s your responsibility to have a roadworthy trailer. The trailer must be registered and a licence plate affixed. The brake lights and indicators must be working and visible. If the combined weight of the trailer and boat exceeds 750kg then brakes must be fitted. For your own benefit: Carry a spare tyre if you get a flat. Have a jack in the car large enough to lift the boat and trailer if need be. Tools and an air compressor always comes in handy. Check and remove rust and corrosion and repaint if necessary. Regularly check the wheel bearings and apply grease. You should conduct regular maintenance on your boat trailer as you paid the money for it.

Check out the Disco day at the KEC markets at the KVC By Courtney Bertling Seeing the strength of the local Facebook page, Buy, Sell and Swap, the Karratha Visitor’s Centre identified the need for a buy, sell and swap market. KVC’s manager Bazz Haris and the rest of the staff will be holding a buy, sell and swap market on February 18, open to everyone in town. “It is purely for locals, we want to make people are aware that the centre is not just for tourists,” he said. “We want to get the community involved like it used to be many years ago when the centre used to hold craft markets.” Bazz said the upcoming market would be completely different to the other markets around town. “People are constantly coming and going through town so there is a huge turnover of household items,” he said. “There is a huge call for people to get rid of and get new items. “We will not be selling jewellery or craft, the whole idea is about a car boot sale, that way it will not distract from any other markets in town. “We are hoping people will want to step out of the virtual world and
come down to the markets which we are planning on doing monthly, rail, hail or shine.” Food and drinks will be available, with ideas ranging from breakfast muffins, pancakes, Malayasian food and the Javavan. “The bonus to having a buy, sell and swap market is the social aspect,” Bazz said.
The Karratha Entertainment Centre finished off their school holiday program recently with an Australia Day Disco. Kids were able to shake out all their energy, show off their dance skills and enjoy some fun disco games and delicious party food. The School Holiday Programs cater for primary school aged children and are held during school holidays as a care, fun and recreation alternative for families who work
or have other commitments and require care for their children. The program ensures quality care in a caring safe environment, challenging and stimulating activities, interaction and fun, individual choice and play valued, fun outings and memories to last a lifetime. Don’t miss out next school holidays, for more information contact the KEC on 9186 8558.
• Jade Adams breaking it down

“What is there to do on a Saturday morning? “It will be early enough not to be too hot and the grounds of the Karratha Visitor’s Centre look amazing.” Bazz said that over time, the markets would evolve to what the community wants. “We want to become more relevant to the community, as we are here 12 months during the year, however tourists are not,” he said. “So locals must come first.”
Skills Centre
Sellers’ bays cost $25, sellers set up from 8am and buyers are welcome between 9am and noon. No early birds! “What’s even better, is that all the proceeds from the sellers’ bays costs will go back into the centre, where our first thing to buy this year is a camper trailer so we can take tours to the Harding Dam and Millstream River,” Bazz said.

Wildlife watch: Tawny Frogmouth
The biggest threat to these birds is road accidents. Many birds are hit by cars while chasing insects in car headlights. Frogmouths are active at night and spend the day roosting on a dead log or tree branch close to the tree trunk. They have excellent camouflage, staying very still and upright looking just like part of the branch. They also take this position if threatened, preferring to sit very still than flee. Their feather colour is silver gray mottled with black, they have large yellow eyes like an owl and this is what confuses people.

They prefer to sit and wait for prey to come to them, pouncing from the perch to the ground although they will chase insects that are attracted to light, thus hunting on the wing.
• The Tawny Frogmouth
Back due to popular demand... These rather unusual birds are found throughout mainland Australia and Tasmania with the exception of thick rainforest and deserts. They are more related to the nightjars than the owls. They differ from owls in that frogmouths have rather weak feet and lack the taloned claws for catching prey.

Cattrall Park gates to open Karratha’s family park will re-open to the public this month after undergoing a $2.2 million redevelopment. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig said lengthy delays were caused by significant rainfall last year which led to flooding on the site. “The delays have been very unfortunate however the Shire will not compromise on the quality of work undertaken to accelerate the completion of the project,” Cr White-Hartig said. “I would like to thank the community, particularly those living in Pegs Creek who live near the park, for their patience and understanding over the last 12 months. “Cattrall Park is scheduled to re-open to the public in February, families, fitness fanatics and dog-walkers alike will once again be able to enjoy the popular park now with a new adventure playground, barbeques, additional shade and landscaping. “The redevelopment also includes a lighting and electrical upgrade, further ensuring the safety of our community. “Once re-opened the newly redeveloped park will be available for weddings and functions, providing the perfect backdrop for those wishing to celebrate special occasions close to home,” Cr White-Hartig said. Due to current weather conditions the final portion of landscaping will be completed in April to ensure the vegetation becomes well established.

Red Dog a howling success on red carpet By Courtney Bertling The reputation of Western Australia’s film industry continues to grow with the film, Red Dog, receiving the Best Film award in January’s Australian Academy Cinema Television Arts Awards. Red Dog added the AACTA Award for Best Film to its growing list of achievements, including AFI Members’ Choice Award at the Samsung AACTA Awards Luncheon on January 15 and being the biggest-selling DVD of 2011. Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said this has been a landmark year for WA’s screen industry and State Government-supported productions,
with local productions receiving a total of 29 AACTA Award nominations. “The sheer number and diversity of nominations is proof that Western Australian productions are of a high quality and that there is increasing depth in the local screen industry,” Mr Day said. “This is an outstanding achievement and testimony to the talent and skill that is available in Western Australia. He said WA-made feature films do well and his Government will continue to support and nurture local screen practitioners. Producer Nelson Woss said the idea
of making a movie of Red Dog came to him back in 2004. “This is so important for all the film makers involved and really we have thank the community of the Pilbara for embracing and supporting us,” he said. “I have travelled all around the world with this movie, and everywhere I go I get asked the same questions; ‘is it as beautiful as the movie?’ and ‘are the locals really that tough?’” “My response; the place is even better in person and the people are tough but still very fair and honest.” “This movie really is a love letter to the Pilbara.”

You won’t be disappointed at Lil’s Retravision • Australia Day in Tom Price - photo courtesy of Julie Anne Glover
Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! By Rebecca Parish
The Australia Day celebrations in Tom price kicked off with the Tom Price Amateur Swimming Club cooking a barbecue breakfast for the community. The Vic Hayton Memorial Pool hosted over 550 people for an extra special Australia Day this year, also celebrating the 30th birthday of the Pilbara Regiment. The Pilbara Regiment marked their birthday with a Freedom of Entry exercise, where they were granted permission of entry to the region by WA Police sergeant Dan Anderson and his officers. The last time Pilbara Regiment exercised its right to freedom of entry to the Shire of Ashburton was on August 9 1998. The tradition stems from a custom observed by British regiments marching through the City of London. Following the ceremony, Shire of Ashburton chief executive officer Jeff Breen along with Councilor Peter Foster presented the Premier’s Australia Day Citizenship Awards. The Tom Price Emergency Services cadets took out the Citizenship award for a community group whilst Asha Holland and Steve Moule were awarded the citizenship awards. Australia Day Tom Price also saw the very first running of the Tom Price Regatta, with seven teams entering boats made out of materials such as plastic, rubber, foam and duck tape. Due to its success, it is planned to be an annual Australia Day competition event. The Shire of Ashburton would like to thank Muzzys Hardware for supplying and helping set up and pull down the jumping castle. We would also like to thank all those who attended and participated in ‘being Australian’ celebrations.
By Courtney Bertling Walking into Lil’s Retravision store in Karratha, you are always greeted with a smiley face asking if you need help with anything. I love heading down to the store just to make sure I have a great day; the people are friendly, informative and always up for a laugh or two. Just recently, my partner and I moved into a new house and were in desperate need for the regular household items like a fridge, TV, surround sound system and to keep up with my photography needs, a new laptop.
“Retravision over WA, SA and NT have been celebrating the 50 years of Retravision being a strong and vibrant retail group who will continue to work with the same ambition for the future to ensure that our customers get rewarded with the biggest range, best possible prices and most professional service we can provide.” The family company is locally owned and spearheaded by George and George, and their professional staff has the ability and expertise to give the shopping experience that people deserve in the Pilbara but sometimes don’t receive.
Instead of jumping online to a Perth store, I made the effort to head down to see the team at Retravision and I couldn’t believe how much the staff knew about their products.
“With our Aussie dollar being so strong we are seeing some exciting new product at super low prices, so we are taking this opportunity to pass on these huge savings to you, our costumers,” he said.
Karratha store owner and manager George Levissianos said Lil’s Retravision Karratha and South Hedland would like to extend thanks to all of their loyal customers.
“All of our electrical goods come to Karratha and South Hedland freight free, enabling us to compete with even city prices so that there is no penalty for living in the sunny Pilbara.”
“These are the customers that have been supporting us for over 15 years in Karratha and over 30 years in Hedland,” he said.
They also offer free local delivery in town to your door, so go on and see the team; they ‘won’t be beaten on price or service’.

Stafford Brother prove to be the real storm By Courtney Bertling The mighty Stafford Brothers continued to show the Pilbara their high spirits and non-stop partying when they left the packed crowd at the All Seasons in a frenzy last Saturday night. The Stafford Brothers proved who the real storm was after TC Iggy couldn’t handle the Pilbara and dodged the town. The night started off with locals DJs Cam Myles and Panda, regulars in front of the community, where they both set the dancing pace that had the All Seasons packed just an hour after the doors opened! The Stafford Brothers sure did have some high standards to reach after they performed last July and left the crowd literally tearing up the new carpet at the All Seasons.
And sure enough, they set the standard for gigs in Karratha even higher. With the strong big house sounds in their energetic set, these mighty brothers have made a night that will go down in history. And the Stafford Brothers was only the beginning, keep tuned for more out-of-thisworld gigs making their way to Karratha thanks to Electric Button. Search ‘Electric Button’ on Facebook to keep up to date with photos from the night and upcoming events, including a visit from Pilbara loved DJ, Kid Kenobi on March 10. What rain? It’s Australia Day! Despite the wet weather, Australia Day celebrations went off with a bang throughout the Shire of Roebourne last Thursday, January 26. In Dampier, residents were treated to a free barbecue breakfast at the Dampier Skate Park organised by the Dampier Community Association with a number of people in attendance throughout the morning. Locals Natalie Gray and Alicia Harklid said Dampier has a real sense of community spirit. “As we don’t have shops anymore, this is a good time to get together and connect with one another,” they said. “The Dampier Primary School year seven students are also selling drinks and the money will go towards their year seven camp.”
In Karratha, a barbecue breakfast at the Karratha Aquatic Centre went ahead but heavy rainfall meant numbers were down on those expected. Throughout the morning, a number of people attended and enjoyed a delicious breakfast cooked by Karratha Apex Club. The crowd also witnessed the Pilbara Regiment conducting a ‘Freedom of Entry’ ceremony, which was kindly supported by Karratha Police, who set up a short-term roadblock and were present during the ceremony. Unfortunately, the live entertainment from SpinFX and Signature Music had to be cancelled due to heavy rainfall throughout the day, still a great day was had by all.

Thiess joint Peter Dhu to hold business venture wins presentation skills workshop Wheatstone contract A joint venture between Thiess and Belgian company BESIX SA has won a $260 million contract to develop the breakwater and materials offloading facility of the Chevronoperated Wheatstone LNG Project. Thiess’ local capabilities, paired with BESIX’s international marine expertise, allow the BEST joint venture to focus on Australia’s growing demand for first-class port infrastructure. The joint venture will design and build the infrastructure near Onslow. The project will create more than 300 jobs; with the majority of the work based in Onslow. Thiess Managing Director Bruce Munro said the Wheatstone Project enables the BEST JV to bring their specialised capabilities to the benefit of Chevron. “This partnership creates a new specialist marine capability to support the booming LNG sector and continues our involvement in the industry, and the productive and ongoing relationship with Chevron Australia,” he said. “Thiess is at the forefront of providing the critical infrastructure needed for this rapidly growing industry.” The contract is Thiess’ second win on the Wheatstone Project, having previously secured a microtunnelling contract direct with Chevron. For the project Thiess is contracted to Bechtel for Chevron. Thiess is currently completing two contracts for Chevron on the Gorgon LNG Project at Barrow Island including the accommodation village and site preparation and temporary facilities. Work is due to start on site later this year.

Monadelphous wins WA contracts worth $180m Monadelphous Group Limited recently announced it has secured infrastructure construction contracts in WA with a combined value of approximately $180 million. Managing Director of the leading engineering group, Rob Velletri, said the contracts support his company’s objective of sustainable growth through the continued expansion of their infrastructure business. “They build on our long term relationships with blue chip customers,” he said. The first is for Rio Tinto’s Coastal Waters Project at Bungaroo Valley in the Pilbara.
The contract comprises the construction and installation of a 10 gigalitre per annum potable water system from Bungaroo Valley to the West Pilbara Supply Scheme at Millstream, WA. Work is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2012 and the water should be flowing by June 2013. The second contract, awarded by Chevron Australia, is for the preparation and construction of a CO2 injection pipeline and well sites on the Gorgon Project at Barrow Island. This contract, secured through Monadelphous’s transmission
pipelines business KT Pty Ltd, comprises installation and precommissioning of seven kilometres of underground pipeline and five well sites. Work will commence immediately and should be completed by March next year. It follows the installation of pipelines, cables and tubes for Chevron Australia and the construction of the onshore DomGas Pipeline for Clough Sea Trucks Joint Venture. These latest contracts take the total value of new work secured by Monadelphous in the 2012 financial year to more than $1.5 billion.

Work life balance By Nicky Arthur Trying to balance your life can be a juggling act and a challenge when working those long hours. It can be done.
Firstly, it is vital you get clear on how important your health and wellbeing is for longevity, energy and vitality. To become the best you can be means, you have to take responsibility for your own routine and health whether you are in corporate job, business owner or a stay-at-home mum. It can be easy to use time as an excuse. Try to find a happy balance in fitting what is a realistic goal to your daily routine.
1. We all have the same amount of time in a 24hr day. Use it wisely. 2. Schedule in your ‘Hour of Power’ this is your ‘YOU’ time. It may mean you have to make some changes for example, get too bed earlier to get up earlier. 3. Eat healthy. You are going to need all the nutrients, minerals and vitamins possible. You may have to top up with vitamins for extra energy. 4. Sleep is vital. Work out the amount you best operate on. This

could be from 6hrs – 8hrs. 5. Hydrate yourself. Aim for at least 2 liters per day and in extreme heat that may be more. If you are thirsty, you may already be dehydrated. Drink fluid consistently throughout the day to keep your brain sharp. 6. Relax. Schedule in some time to relax your mind and body. This could be sitting around nature, or cuddled up in your favorite place reading or meditating. 7. Stay positive. Become mindful when those mind viruses take over. Get tested Sexually active young people are encouraged to get tested for Chlamydia, which can lead to serious health problems for men and women if it is not treated. WA Country Health Service Pilbara Regional Sexual Health Coordinator Inger Espersen said if chlamydia was left untreated it could lead to infertility and other health problems. “The infection often has no symptoms so it is important to get tested as soon as possible,” she said. “Testing for chlamydia involves a simple urine test and can be treated by a single dose of antibiotics prescribed by a doctor. “Re-testing after treatment is important because one in five people will be reinfected.”

• Learning footy skills with Inclusion WA
AFL included again By V Swans regional development officer Clint Degebrodt It was great to start the New Year, involved once again, with Inclusion WA and their community inclusion program here in the Shire of Roebourne. In terms of the AFL program it was the best participation result yet with 21 participants, growing steadily upward form 12 at the first session in early 2011. It was also great to have Yandina along demonstrating their skills and making the session high class and heaps of fun. All players were put through their paces starting with their fast touch and footy circus skills, which allowed the team to show their enthusiasm and knowledge. Handball skills and tricks followed and the players blossomed when put through their kicking drills. V Swans Pilbara Development players Phil Khongjaroen and Ritchie Wright led
the session well in their first job as lead coaches. The talented pair are starting to give back to their community through sports delivery adding to their efforts having been involved with the set up and running of the AFL 9’ pilot in spring 2011. Matt Shaw the Sport and Community Development Officer with Inclusion WA was happy with the session. “Thanks again to the V Swans team, we are really happy to be involved with them here in Karratha, they have been on board with the program from the start in Karratha and we are very keen to continue to work with them in the years to come,” he said. All participants will be looking eagerly forward to April, not just for the Easter eggs and school holidays, but also for the fantastic sports like swimming, cricket, T-Ball, basketball and footy that the community through Inclusion Sport WA put on for all to join in.
If everyone could do a bit – we will have the place looking schmick!

Community sport and recreation clubs in the Shire of Roebourne have a new ally in Shire’s new Club Development Officer Sam King. The CDO position has been made possible through a joint initiative between the State Government, the Shire of Roebourne and Rio Tinto. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig said Mr King would provide much-needed support to all community sport and recreation groups in Karratha, Dampier, Wickham, Roebourne and Point Samson. “Sam will contribute to the ongoing development and sustainability of community sporting organisations by providing professional support and advice,” Councillor White-Hartig said. “Sam will disperse important information, conduct workshops, provide knowledge for sustainable club futures, assist with community projects and act as a point-ofcontact for community sport and recreation groups at the Shire. “It is fantastic that Rio Tinto and the Department of Sport and Recreation have joined forces with the Shire of Roebourne to fund this vital position.” Rio Tinto Manager Communities and Partnerships Renae Rutherford said the company’s contribution of more than

$230,000 over three years reflects the commitment to local community groups and volunteers. “Rio Tinto’s contribution aims to support the many volunteers and people involved in our local clubs through training opportunities in areas such as management and governance practices.” Department of Sport and Recreation Regional Manager Kane Benson said the increased cost of living in the Pilbara region meant a joint investment by the Government, the Shire and Rio Tinto was the only way this position could operate. Originally from Cairns, Mr King said he had worked in sport and recreation for the past seven years in a variety of roles. “All sport and recreation clubs have an important role to play in the community and it is essential to make sure they are operating well and into the future,” Mr King said. “I appreciate the amount of time and effort people put into their clubs and I am more than willing to assist in any way I can to ensure they can continue to provide quality options for local residents.” Community sport and recreation clubs can contact Shire of Roebourne Club Development Officer Sam King on 0427 132 786 or sam.king@roebourne.wa.gov.au.

V Swans AFL coaching accreditation By V Swans regional development manager Clint Degebrodt
• The Staff Team
Inaugural WA North AFL Talent Camp a roaring success By V Swans regional development officer Clint Degebrodt Twenty-eight talented footballers participated in the 16’s WA North AFL Talent Camp last week, as part of a partnership between the AFL, WA Football Commission, V Swans and Garnduwa. The Talent Program included talented footballers from the North West including the Pilbara, Kimberley and Gascoyne Regions. This groundbreaking initiative means North West youth has access to talent and educational programs enjoyed in the metro area, without having to leave home. The Port Hedland camp saw the participants put through their paces with Newman’s Hughes leading the beep test with 13.2 and Nelson Ansey leaping 67cm in the standing vertical leap. With more camps to be held in Broome and Fitzroy Crossing over the coming months, the WA North Staff are expecting even greater feats. “It was outstanding to see the boys come from far and wide and perform so well in oppressive conditions.” WAFC High Performance Manager Craig Starcevich said. “These kids are really tough, I am super impressed with their attitude. The following camps will allow these talented footballers the opportunity to develop their skills,
fitness and knowledge as part of their ongoing education.” The WA North 16’s Talent Squad is in its inaugural year; from this pool of athletes a team will represent the North of WA at the 2012 NAB AFL under-16’s Championships in Sydney, others will get their chance in the Nicky Winmar Cup held in Perth later this month and may even be selected in the Kick Start program and subsequent tour. Opportunities for further selection into Colts, WAFL or even AFL are anticipated. The WA North Talent Squad spent their time in Hedland undertaking all of the different sessions that are intended to prepare them for the possibility of life as an AFL footballer. The leadership component builds solid citizens and all participants will be better footballers as a result, regardless of final selections. A big part of the camp was the creation of the squad rules, generated by the squad, the rules are for on and off the field, which they will self-monitor and which may ultimately impact upon their final selection. Every participant understood the importance participating in the program and with quality mentors ensuring an all-over development of these participants, selections into the final squad will no doubt be a difficult process, but solid contributing community members is a guarantee.
Once again the combined online and practical course will again be delivered in the Swans District in 2012. This year’s program will take on the same format with theory accreditation completed online and practical work will be completed regionally. The theory component is based, completed and assessed online via the ‘Beginning Coaching General Principles’ course offered free of charge by the Australian Sports Commission. This component consists of five modules on the general aspects of coaching. Each module provides an overview, case studies and activities, an assessment and future links and resources on the general areas of coaching. This component will take four or five hours to complete, however, it does not have to be completed in one sitting, and can be done where you choose. Once the theory has been completed, participants will be provided with a completion certificate which must be printed

and taken to the practical session. This step is essential, as proof of the completion of the theory component is a prerequisite to attend the practical session and achieve accreditation. The V Swans team will conduct and host the coaches’ forum and practical component of the AFL Level One Coaching Course, which will take three to five hours to complete. The activities at these sessions will include basic skill drills, the teaching, assessment, fault correction and skill remediation, warm up activities, game sense drills, running of an Auskick session, extended drills and full ground drills. It is also at this stage that the coaches will receive the relevant information and resources for future use. Youth and senior participants will spend some time with a senior mentor coach as part of the course. The V Swans team encourages all interested coaches to enrol and any enquiries or questions can be forwarded to us on the contact details above. The course is available online at https:// learning.ausport.gov.au and general information about the course can be accessed via the ASC website at www.ausport.com.au .

• Some of the TPMC and Muzzys Home Hardware
TPMC thanks Muzzys Home Hardware By Peter Cooper With the help of local business in Tom Price, the Tom Price Motorcycle Club held a fundraising barbecue and raffle with great prizes kindly donated by Muzzys Home Hardware. Local motocross enthusiast Tara Wall said she approached Muzzys to help with prizes for a fundraiser and they came back saying they would provide absolutely everything. “Muzzys were kind enough to provide all the food for the sausage sizzle and hamburgers as well as setting up a space out the front of Muzzys with their own barbecue, tables, shade, everything. They were fantastic; if we ran out of something the owner Suzanne would run straight to Coles and top us up,” she said. “It was a great turn out we had people lined up from 8am till 2pm and even a huge downpour of rain and wind gusts wouldn’t stop the tradies and locals from grabbing a hot snagger. “Everyone enjoyed their tucker so much that we most people coming back for seconds and thirds. “We raised $2500 for our club, and hopefully attracted new members for our
upcoming race season.” TPMC Club had a great turn out of helpers from young’uns to the president. Everyone was there to help out or chat to people about our club; we even had a range of motorbikes on display for people to look at. President Brad Manuel said he is stoked with Tome Price’s Muzzys Home Hardware – now an official sponsor of Tom Price Motocross Club – and they have provided us with an awesome brand new playground for our kids to enjoy. “As soon as the groundwork is done out the track our new playground will be in,” he said. Winners of the raffle on the day were: First prize for the barbecue worth $800, went to Kim Redmond of Tom Price. Second prize for a shade gazebo worth $200 went to Mark Arrowsmith of Tom Price. And third prize for an 80L Coleman Esky went to Paul within fly in fly out of Tom Price. All prizes were kindly donated by Muzzys Home Hardware in Tom Price.
