Lisa Ives took this photo of her kids and their friends having fun in what they call the ‘bathtub’ out on the Burrup Penninsula.

“It only fills up after rain so any opportunity we get after rain we head straight out there for a jump off the rocks,” she said.

It was taken in early February this year when she and her family thought they would take the kids out there after the rain and after their first day back at school.

“We have been going there for the past 10 years or so. “There is also some great aboriginal carvings in the area.” Lisa used a Canon 500D

These gorgeous little wallabies are only found in the Pilbara. They are supposedly quite common around Karijini but I have only ever seen them on the Islands off Dampier and more recently out on the Burrup. Like most rock wallabies these guys inhabit rock outcrops, boulder piles, cliffs and gorges. The hind foot of all rock wallabies differs from other macropods by the fact they have very fleshy granulated pads on the sole of their feet which gives them grip and their long brushy tails provide balance when hopping in their three dimensional environment. Anyone who has seen these critters in action will agree their agility is beyond belief. The way they can scale the rocky outcrops with apparent minimum effort is a joy to watch. They are one of the larger rock wallabies (and the prettier) with the males reaching 6.5kg and the females 5kg. They can live in large localised colonies of up to a hundred animals but individual rock outcrops are usually populated by no more than ten. The wallabies tend to feed around their outcrops only moving if there is enough grass and herbage to provide a safe refuge. Some studies have found that the introduction of herbivores has reduced vegetation cover and the threat from carnivores has severely limited such long distance movements. They are well adapted for their hot and dry environment where rainfall is limited to cyclonic activity, and like most arid region animals, make the best of the limited resources. Staying inactive during the day conserves water and when no water is available they can take moisture from the food they eat. They are foragers, eating the grasses they can find as well as the fruit of the rock fig. Their breeding is determined by the start of the wet season. The animal in the photo (courtesy of Renee Young) featured in a story last year and came from the Burrup. She knocked herself out when she jumped into a stationary car near the Port Authority. As they are a threatened species, the DEC were notified she was in care and she was released none the worse for wear a few days later.

New rangers on-deck at park • Lochiee from Decor8 cleaning off the graffiti at The Youth Shed skate park

The Youth Shed already defaced By Courtney Bertling With only one week until the official opening of The Youth Shed, and with big names like Australian Idol winner Wes Carr and Dorothy the Dinosaur being flown in, you’d think graffiti isn’t something they would like to see. Last weekend, graffiti appeared on the skate park at The Youth Shed with people of the community calling it ‘disappointing’ and asking ‘where the respect has gone’. The Shire of Roebourne is extremely disappointed that ‘senseless’ vandals have defaced this brand new centre for children and youth, Shire of Roebourne CEO Collene Longmore has said. “The facility is not even open to the public yet and already it has been vandalised,” she said. “Arrangements have been made to remove the graffiti immediately

and the matter will be referred to Karratha Police for investigation. “This is our standard procedure and it has previously resulted in some success with a number of graffiti vandals being found by police.” Ms Longmore said that as this is a community facility, she encourages members of the community to keep an eye out at The Youth Shed, and other facilities and parks, for suspicious behaviour. “The more eyes we have on the streets, the more likely we are to catch vandals or prevent them from plying their trade in the first place,” she said. Members of the community can report graffiti by contacting the Shire on (08) 9186 8555 or visiting www.roebourne.wa.gov.au and clicking the ‘Contact Us’ link at the bottom of the page.

The Pilbara’s Millstream Chichester National Park has received a welcome boost with the appointment of two new park rangers who will patrol and manage the area. Marc McDonald and Stephen Breedveld started in their new roles with the Department of Environment and Conservation at the end of last year. DEC regional leader of Parks and Visitor Services Alex Bowlay said both staff brought a wealth of experience, energy and enthusiasm to the job. “Marc, who is originally from South Africa, has worked at various national parks in southern Africa and more recently in Queensland. Stephen has previously worked with DEC in Perth,” he said. Marc said while Millstream Chichester was a fantastic park with many well-known areas, he was keen to raise awareness about the park’s hidden gems and upcoming attractions. “The recently refurbished Deep Reach day use area is already attracting strong interest and use with its new car park, paths and water access stairs. We will also be installing new shade shelters and gas barbecues,” he said. “We’re also planning new mountain bike paths and walking tracks around the main Millstream precinct.” Local annual park passes are available for anyone residing and working in the shires of Roebourne, Ashburton, East Pilbara and Port Hedland at a cost of $20. The passes allow unlimited access for one vehicle to Millstream Chichester and Karijini national parks and are valid for 12 months.

Community Spirit It is amazing to see so many people supporting each other around town. It doesn’t seem to matter if they’re related or not. We’re talking about all the hardworking florists on Tuesday – everyone is so grateful.

If I could be the Humidity Fairy and send humidity anywhere, where would it be? Some botox inflated celebrity to watch a real meltdown? The meltdown You airy fairy scary sky, you’re soggy humid, not bone dry my glasses fog, you make me cry and watch those drunken sunken flies swoop hither, thither, pooey feet, their stickiness is no one’s treat and then they stick upon the meat. Oh, gross, my barbeque. A treat.

Dumped! That’s right, we kick you out with all our gall, our hothead clout, the romance – off – it’s come to nout (Not that it ever was). Don’t doubt we do adore your friend the sun who’s hot and sexy, just the one who brings us fiery passion’s fun, who smiles upon us when we’re glum.

Good news for the Karratha Library By Courtney Bertling It was nearly 12 months ago when the Karratha Community Library was closed due to water damage and mould, now the Shire of Roebourne and the Department of Training and Workforce Development are on their way to begin rebuilding it. Department of Training and Workforce Development director general Dr Ruth Shean, said the mould contamination of the Karratha library was due to water damage to the adjacent Walkington Theatre and only occurred when the building was broken into. “The extent of water damage to the theatre had to be fully assessed by the State Government’s Building Management and Works to ensure it met health and safety regulations,” he said. Cr White-Hartig said it was high time the Department took responsibility for months of inaction, which saw Shire residents left without their largest community library for most of 2011. “We do not own the library, the Department does, and clearly it has an obligation to repair the damage, which saw the facility close in March 2011,” Cr White-Hartig said. The library rectification works will include a separation wall between

the theatre and library, cleaning of the air-conditioning system, shelving, equipment, soft furnishings and information and communications technology, as well as the replacement of all essential fittings in the library if cleaning is not considered viable. Cr

White-Hartig said the Shire of Roebourne acknowledged the demolition of the Walkington Theatre could potentially occur during its occupancy of the library.

“It was our understanding that we had an agreement on the way forward; however the Shire then chose to take legal action which delayed proceedings.” - Dr Ruth Shean “We do not own the theatre so if Pilbara Institute intends to demolish it, there is little we can do,” she said. “Our occupancy of the library will not prevent or impede any redevelopment of that facility or site, or any associated works.” The Department will manage the remediation works to the library, which are expected to take six months and, in the interim, the Shire will proceed to fit out the Pam Buchanan Family Centre, at

a total cost of more than $400,000, as a temporary library facility. Dr Ruth Shean said that the Department met with the Shire of Roebourne back in April 2011. “It was our understanding that we had an agreement on the way forward,” she said. “However the Shire then chose to take legal action which delayed proceedings.” She said that the current library, which was formerly shared with the Pilbara Institute, does not need to be rebuilt. “It needs to be separated from the theatre and then requires remediation for the mould,” she said. “This may take about six months; the Shire has agreed to this timeframe.

Valentine’s Day is a day when people demonstrate their love for one another, and businesses like Hallmark and florists benefit from people splurging on material gifts like roses and cards. At the Karratha Florist on Valentine’s Day, the entire shop was filled with people, some were even lined up out the door. Karratha Florist administrator, Lisa Solari, said the shop stopped taking orders at 10am on Valentine’s Day and sold over 2000 roses and over 200 other flower varieties. “This is definitely the busiest time of year for us, and was even busier than last year,” she said. “It has been absolutely crazy. The girls in the shop have been amazing and the customers have been really appreciative, even when they have to wait half an hour to be served. “In the Pilbara, Valentine’s Day is insane because we have to order the flowers in from Perth and we need at least two days to prepare and de-thorn that many roses.” Ms Solari said that the day before was just as bad. “There were so many orders, Trish and I were at the shop until 9pm and the other girls were here until 7pm just processing and getting organised for the big day. “It has taken months to organise for the day, you have to pre-order everything from the teddy bears, chocolates, the pots and the flowers, and then you have to organise the menu.” Thirteen people made up the Karratha Florist team for the two days, where on a normal day their team would consist of four or five people. “If you want something special and original, you need to get organised,” she said. “The earlier someone organises it, the earlier we can promise it.” Ms Solari said if you want something special and original for your special someone, then it’s best to get in early.

Misadventures of dating in the Pilbara By Pilbara Romeo I’ve been waiting for the customary two days; two stressful days of watching my phone and getting anxious when it beeps. Then thinking, ‘You know, maybe she’s just playing it cool’, but now that a week has come and gone I’ve resigned myself to the fact that she isn’t going to call. With another Valentine’s Day upon us, I am once again left wondering what girls in the Pilbara are really looking for in a man. Valentine’s Day is when couples can come together and broadcast their love; Pilbara bachelors generally just have to accept it. Not this one. I want a long-term relationship. With a girl. My friends have described being in my company as ‘not as annoying as it used to be’, and my personal hygiene has on several occasions been rated as ‘tolerable’.

You would think that alone ticks a few boxes! I know Valentine’s Day was created to sell frilly panties from Kmart that will be forgotten about as soon as they are flung behind a champagne-soaked settee. I’ve got the panties, now I just need the girl. I met the elusive lady at Miaree Pools. She was pretty, intelligent and seemingly fun so I asked if she would like to catch up for a drink. I offered my number (rookie error I admit – every man knows you have to get the girl’s number, girls love to be chased), and she left with a smile and a coy, ‘I’ll call you’. She didn’t, <checks phone> well not yet. However, after a quiet evening in, on the fourteenth of February, with a beer and a round of Facebook stalking, I now have a whole year to get my act together. So if you’re approached in the coming weeks by a dashing man wanting a date – give him a chance. I promise I won’t pout in your photos.

The heat is on at Pegs Creek Primary By Courtney Bertling No air-conditioning in the Pilbara’s heat is not something anyone looks forward to, however about 48 students at Pegs Creek Primary School have gone without it in their classrooms since late last year. In December last year Pegs Creek Primary School became part of the Air-Conditioning Renewal Program. Prinicpal Lynnette Maculey said all of the agencies involved including the manufacturer, the installer, the Department of Education and the school are working together to try and resolve the issue. “The program would benefit the school as their air-conditioning system was aging,” she said. “So installers came in and installed new units at the end of each block. “It was anticipated that it would all be functioning at the end of the 2011 school year, but there were problems where the systems did not work properly. “The manufacturer of the units have actually admitted liability; it is not just the systems at the school, it is anywhere where the units have been installed. “So they now have their contractors here, who have gone through to try and identify where the faults are and order new equipment, in fact they are going to replace all of the units throughout the school.” Mrs Maculey said summer is dreadful with no air-conditioning. “There have been two classes in particular where the systems have failed completely, so those classes have had no air-conditioning. Those classes have now been relocated to other rooms in the school,” she said. “So they are in an air-conditioned room, but of course it is not the best solution for them at the beginning of the year, where kids want to be in their own classes and teachers want to start routines. “It is anticipated that those two classrooms will have their units up and going over the weekend. “Then we will just work through the school, replacing the units, and classes will be relocated to air-conditioning while the units are being worked on.”

Bright Stars to visit the North West Caring for children can be the most rewarding - and sometimes life affirming - thing a person can do. Couple that with getting paid and for some it’s an occupation made in heaven, especially for residents of the North West. Bright Stars Family Day Care, a flexible, small group day care service that has been operating in the Mid West and Pilbara for more than 33 years, offers all this and more. The service - owned and operated by the City of Greater

Geraldton on a not for profit basis for the City - offers a vital service to the community and is actively seeking people who would like to become educators, working from their own home. Manager of Bright Stars Family Day Care, Karen McDowell, said there is a demonstrated high need for educators in regional communities particularly in the Pilbara. “Because our service is so flexible and the maximum number of children cared for is

seven, the service is particularly suited to people living in the North West,” she said. “Bright Stars educators cater for people who work outside the nine to five workforce, the service offers 24/7 care and is perfect for shift workers.” Mrs McDowell said becoming an educator opens up a rewarding career and great opportunity for residents in the Pilbara; and the business is highly portable. “Based on the early years’ learning framework, studies have

shown that the first five years of a child’s life are vital years for brain development in children, and by choosing to become an educator the opportunity is there to invest in the future of children by providing quality care,” she said. “The business is also very portable; as the children are cared for in a home environment, if an educator leaves the North West and relocates to somewhere in the Mid West for example, they can take that business with them.

Artist’s work plainly on display By Courtney Bertling For several years locals, workers and visitors have had the opportunity to view Dampier resident Dianne Campbell’s artwork in her annual exhibition at the Karratha Airport. Campbell’s latest exhibition, showcasing the interplay between sky and sea, is in the arrivals hall. Entitled Floreat, meaning ‘to flourish’ in Latin, the work follows her discoveries in the medium of oil on canvas and depicts the movement of clouds on water. Ms Campbell said Cloudy Seascape, which she painted in 2004, formed part of the exhibition and was highly commended in the 2004 Port Hedland Art Awards. She said the painting marks the beginning of a long relationship with textured water and cloud-inspired

• Dampier resident Dianne Campbell’s artwork can be viewed at the Karratha Airport pieces. “This exhibition shows 11 pieces evolving around the two subjects,” she said. “At the beginning, I experimented a lot of water and clouds and it flourished, water and clouds becoming the subject.

“As you walk from the tarmac to the luggage handling, my paintings go from older to newer. “I didn’t realise they had been positioned like that until I stepped back and had a look at it.” She said she has grown as an artist from this theme. “When I start a theme, I follow it, I keep on the same track, connecting every painting together, but making them stand out on their own,” she said. “The location of the exhibition is great, I have used oils in every piece and depending on the light hitting the artwork, the bottom layer will come through and you see something completely different then what you would see without the light.” Floreat will be on display until March 1 with all pieces for sale.

“Along with this the financial rewards and job stability is good; we have four long-term educators in the Mid West who have been part of the scheme for more than 20 of the 33 years the scheme has been in operation.” Bright Stars Family Day Care representatives will be visiting Tom Price later this month and Karratha, Wickham and Port Hedland in March. are good at and that what my music is about,” he said. At the opening Wes will be playing both new and old music, but mainly new. “I became involved with the opening through one of my friends,” he said. “I was talking to him, telling him I was sick of turning up to shows and not feeling replenished.” “I want to be more involved with the youth and communities.” “He contacted me back and told me about The Youth Shed, it sounded perfect!” Wes said at previous gigs he felt like he was going nowhere, and people would only ask ‘where are you on the charts?’ “It is an insane life, it is so fake and unreal and I can safely say that even though being a celebrity is such a positive experience, it really isn’t for me,” he said. “I want to be able to do things for communities, I see myself doing things for the youth and being involved with the community spirit.” He said many people do not get to experience the top end of Australia, especially people who live in the city. “I am keen to see the community and the locals, and I am interested to learn more about it,” he said. “A lot of celebrities just bypass towns like Karratha, but I can’t wait to get there.” “For me, it is the best way to learn more about this country and being involved, I do get a lot out of it personally.” “Not many musicians get the opportunity to experience somebody else’s world.” “I am really happy to be involved with the Shire of Roebourne and The Youth Shed opening.” For your chance to see Wes Carr live at The Youth Shed, head down to the official opening on Friday, February 24.

• Former Karratha resident Adam Salathiel, right, plays the father of Joan of Arc (Melissa Kiiveri) in the Australian premiere of Virgin Warrior with Amy Tyers as her mother

Former Karratha resident finds ’80s retro all go Former Karratha resident Adam Salathiel is taking the famed story of a 15th century French peasant girl and mixing it up with the smooth grooves of the ’80s this March. The unlikely pairing is all part of the Australian premiere of rock opera Virgin Warrior at Phoenix Theatre, written by Zig Byfield and Peter Perchard. Directed by Jane Sherwood, it follows the story of 14-yearold Joan of Arc through song as she leaves home and demands an army from a nobleman, repeatedly defeating the English enemy. But at age 20 she is found guilty of heresy by the French church and burned alive. First staged in 1986, Virgin Warrior uses a mix of strong dramatic songs ranging from haunting ballads to striking rock and choral anthems. Salathiel plays Joan’s father, whom he says is a loving and caring man. “He’s secretly proud of his daughter and her willingness to go to war for her country and king, despite being female,” he said. “Not coming from a singing background in theatre, I

considered a rock opera to be a chance to expand as an actor.” With an extensive background in the performing arts on and off the stage, Salathiel has performed with Kwinana, Roleystone and Phoenix Theatres and the Murray Music and Drama Club, also performing in The Pirates of Penzance at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre. He even scored a best supporting actor award many moons ago at the 1992 North West Drama Festival. “Having been involved in many different productions over the years, Virgin Warrior appeared to be a more challenging production,” Salathiel said. “Plus I get to wield a weapon and fight battles and there is a live horse on stage – need I say more?” Virgin Warrior plays at 8pm, March 1, 2, 3, 8, 9 and 10 with a 2pm matinee on March 11. A one-off special show will be held in Perth’s Supreme Court Gardens on March 17 from 5.30pm. Tickets are $20 adults, $15 concession – book on 0450 158 851 or at www.trybooking.com.

Dance is not just for girls Chris Brown, Justice Crew, Usher and Justin Timberlake are all popular male celebrities with something in common… they are awesome dancers. Dancing is not just a girl’s sport; these guys have realised that and so has local dance teacher Kristie Brown, owner of Dance Kix Karratha. Kristie said she has always wanted to do a separate boys class and when opening Dance Kix in 2008 she already had a handful of boys mixed in the girls’ classes. “Two teenage boys in the older jazz, Peter and Doug, had their own duo debut in the middle of the girls’ dance which is what I believe encouraged friends their age to also join in 2009,” she said. “I had a group of six to eight teenage boys that were very enthusiastic and keen to dance.” “I basically gave them a place to dance, free fees and tuition as the incentive, all they had to do was show what they had.”

“They amazed me and with some guidance they wowed the audiences.” It was then she decided she would have an all boys’ class as she could see there really were guys out there that wanted to dance.

This proved successful for Kristie when, in the first year she had 30 boys enroll, last year had 60 and now this year has 120 boys split between three classes.

“Since the boys have done performances around town, their peers have seen that this is the cool dancing and not girly,” she said.

Last year Ben McGuigen, an experienced break-dancer from Adelaide, became involved with the school and began teaching the boys.

“I have made huge efforts over the past few years enticing the boys to have a go.”

“I was approached by Ben, who was really impressed, and asked if there was a way he could get involved with teaching some boys his skills in break-dancing,” she said.

“I paid for Suri (from ‘So You Think You Can Dance’) to spend a week with my whole school.” “The li’l boys of 2011 got to perform and some met Justice crew.” “There was also kind sponsorship from Alan and Mel of the Pilbara Echo last year where all the boys received their dance shorts free, and Clayton McIntosh from McDonalds Karratha sponsored the boys with DKK flat caps.” “I try to keep them separate from the girls and have their own style of dance and uniform, and its obviously worked.”

Shire of Roebourne

Birds, reptiles and marine turtle hatchlings have also suffered significant declines as a result of predation by foxes and cats. Foxes reduce the hatching success of marine turtles by digging up nests, eating eggs and preying on hatchlings. Cats and foxes are found on the Burrup Peninsula and the islands of the Dampier Archipelago. Foxes and cats may cross to the islands on very low tides. They may also be carried to other islands unintentionally via human transport modes or on large floating material.

Since the introduction of foxes and cats to Australia, many of our native fauna species have suffered. Twenty-seven mammal species have become extinct in the 200 years since European settlement and another 94 species are threatened with extinction unless action is taken to conserve them. A major contributor to this decline is predation of small to medium-sized mammals by foxes and cats.

The Shire of Roebourne is inviting two representatives from small businesses/ organisations to attend the first Small Business Breakfast Briefing for 2012 on Tuesday, February 28. There will be a delicious hot breakfast from 7:30 am, with presentations commencing at 7:45 am. The breakfast will be held at the Large Conference Room in the Pam Buchanan Family Centre, 51 Gardugarli Drive, Baynton West RSVP to Sharon Nicholson 9186 8577 or Sharon.nicholson@ roebourne.wa.gov.au by Friday, February 24. Native fauna of the Dampier Archipelago

Scientist to visit Karratha

The Burrup Peninsula and Dampier Archipelago are home to about 16 species of native mammal, including Rothschild’s rock wallabies, and form some of the most significant and extensive nesting areas for marine turtles in Australia. The rocky hills of the peninsula and islands are similar to the ranges found in the inland Pilbara, but as they have been much less disturbed by human activity, they support a very high diversity of fauna and flora. The Rothschild’s rock wallaby is only found in parts of the Pilbara and Ashburton regions of WA. Rock wallabies can be found sheltering among rocky caves and crevices, where the conditions are cooler and more humid than the direct heat, enabling them to survive periods of drought. Other native mammal species found on the peninsula and islands include the echidna, the endangered northern quoll, marsupial mouse and two species of bat. Four species of marine turtle—green, flatback, hawksbill and loggerhead—are often seen in the Dampier Archipelago. During summer, female flatback, green and hawksbill turtles nest on several beaches. The archipelago supports one of the largest hawksbill turtle rookeries in the world. All four turtle species are listed on WA and international lists of threatened species.

Why is 1080 used? The poison sodium fluoroacetate (1080) is found naturally in many WA native pea plants. In WA, native fauna generally have a high level of tolerance to the poison and therefore it can be used to control cats and foxes without endangering our native species. 1080 is water soluble and is broken down by fungi and bacteria following rainfall. However, in the dry Pilbara environment, 1080 may persist for longer periods of time than in wetter areas. You should assume that the Burrup Peninsula and Dolphin, Angel and Gidley islands are baited all year round. Other control methods, such as shooting or trapping foxes and cats, have had low success rates as the animals are elusive and do not enter traps easily. Fertility control has not developed to a state where it can be implemented as a means of reducing future populations of feral predators. DEC is satisfied that the use of 1080 in introduced animal control programs such as Western Shield is effective and appropriate, and essential for the future of our native fauna.

How to protect your pets against 1080

Rothschild’s rock wallaby. Photo – Joy McGilvray

Pet owners should assume that the Burrup Peninsula north of Withnell Bay, including Dolphin, Angel and Gidley islands are baited all year round. If it is not necessary to bring your pets with you to the Burrup Peninsula, it is recommended to leave them at home. Dogs are not permitted onto the island reserves of the Dampier Archipelago and will be at risk if you take them there. In areas where pets are permitted, muzzles, if appropriately fitted, may prevent pets scavenging baits or carcasses. However by far the best approach to avoid poisoning is to avoid contact with the baited area and leave your pets at home. If you suspect your pet has taken a bait, induce vomiting and immediately seek veterinarycomplete attention. plate

Friends are more than just a mate By Courtney Bertling Friends are the family members that people choose, and the Red Dog 4WD Club have proved that no matter whether someone is related or not, they will always be there to offer a helping hand for their family. It was in March 2010 when a member from the club was diagnosed with motor neurone disease. MND is a terminal disease that affects the control of voluntary muscle activity including speaking, walking, breathing, swallowing and general movement of the body. Red Dog 4WD Club president Keith ‘Doc’ Walker said everything has been going well, except for the last six months. In order to raise money to help pay

for equipment used to make the club’s member comfortable including a hoist, a van and medication, the club has decided to hold a car boot sale for the whole community to get involved in. “I thought about what I could do as a friend and thought I should get the Red Dog 4WD Club involved, since he has been a member for the last three years,” Doc said. “The reason we came up with the idea is because we see him as more like family to us than just a mate. “Friends are the most important people in your life and you should do everything in your power to take care of them.” A number of businesses and organisations have already gotten involved, offering items like money, sausages, buns etc. The car boot sale will be held on February 25 at the Centro car park inbetween the banks and McDonalds from 8am onwards and costs $25 per

Lalor has been involved with swimming both as a coach and swimmer for the past 20 years. He represented Australia at many international meets before retiring and pursuing his coaching career. The coaching clinic focused on improving all stroke techniques, with a particular emphasis on breaststroke. The clinic was followed up with our first club night of the season, where once again some fabulous personal best times were achieved. The Bushby family stole the show, dominating the pool with their improvements. With one family member unwell on the night, only four of the family members were competing. Seventy golfers turned out to play last weekend on a warm summer day. John “SKIP” Riding was the overall winner with 23 points; a deserving winner of a fabulous chainsaw thanks to Home Hardware. of sight and I think we will have absolutely no dramas in finishing the race in a reasonable time which at this stage is all we are aiming for. “Depending on the conditions, and we are praying that it wont be too choppy, I think we should be able to finish around the six hour mark.”

23 points (Bob is waiting for his official handicap - watch this space, you are sure to see his name again). On the front nine, Tony ‘Coops’ Cooper came first, Ben Tawhiti in second and Steve Oliver in third. For the back nine, Mark ‘Paddo’ Paterson came first, Alan Lanin in second and Chris Witt in third. John Magerl and Ben Tawhiti got the longest drives and nearest to pin were Steve Oliver and

Alan Lannin. Last weekend’s golf events was sponsored by Home Hardware and supported by representatives Jeremy and Mick who returned to hole 19 with big grins. Anouska Angrove is heading to Rottnest next weekend to compete in the 2012 Rottnest Channel Swim in a family team of four. The race departs from Cottesloe Beach and finishes at Thomson Bay, Rottnest Island, equaling 20km. Angrove’s team comprises her older sister, two younger brothers and herself. “We will all be swimming for approximately 10 minutes at a time then tagging the next swimmer,” she said. “My brother-in-law will be paddling along side us to help us to swim in the right direction and also keep an eye out for sharks.” Angrove has competed in many triathlon events as a swimmer in the pool and the ocean, and has completed the Rottnest Swim Thru, which is a jetty-to-jetty, but nothing as far as this. “My brothers, sister and I come from avid swimming and waterpolo backgrounds and we have been talking about doing

9A Crane Circle

By V Swans regional development manager Clint Degebrodt Motivated and talented underage players are working through a strong preseason in searing heat to prepare themselves for both the West Pilbara Junior Football Association’s coming season and the V Swan’s Talent Academy program. It started with a few keen kids having an early run down at Bulgara in excitement of the coming footy season but it has quickly grown to a full training session with AFL warm ups, cutting-edge ball work and core sessions sure to make the most disciplined gym junkie flinch. The V Swans teams in the 2011 North West

Championships felt they were a little lacking in strength and touch and they have set themselves to be ready and waiting to go, and given the carnival is in October, the boys will be certainly ready. The sessions, which begin at 4pm and finish at 5pm, involve a dynamic warm up, sprint technique followed by skills and finished with core work. Core strength will be a huge focus for V Swans Academy members in 2012 as increased core strength reduces that likelihood of injury. Core work in footy terms is referred to as ‘body insurance’ and the players have taken to it with great enthusiasm. The V Swans Academy program will officially kick off in late March with an induction camp and for the first time there will be a training hub in

• Players not afraid of the heat each Pilbara Shire. These hubs are proposed to meet in Port Hedland during April and if this happens it will bring a new area for youth football development in the area with more kids exposed to representative footy, more often. It is planned that this will lead to stronger more knowledgeable players that will be ready made for the rigors of the NPFL as well as represent the Pilbara in the WA North AFL 16s side and hopefully start a landslide of Pilbara players entering the WAFL and AFL systems.

One stop sports shop big success By V Swans regional development manager Clint Degebrodt

“She’s an excellent resource for the Shire and greater Pilbara, we were pleased to have a person of her calibre here,” he said.

The ‘One Stop Sports Shops’ held at Council Chambers last Monday and Tuesday night, were a great success.

Club Development Officer with the Shire of Roebourne Sam King was delighted with the partnership between the Shire, DSR and the V Swans program.

The sports medicine ‘Strap and Wrap’ course attended by representatives from Rugby League, AFL, Triathlons among a variety of representatives proved particularly popular. The Department of Sport and Recreation and the V Swans brought Sports Medicine Australia Manager of Education Dana Pimley to Karratha to give the sporting community access to professional learning opportunities.

Our team are right here in the Pilbara.

DSR Pilbara Manager Kane Benson said Dana works for Sports Med, works in the WAFL system, has about five degrees and works in the fitness and conditioning team at Fremantle.

“The V Swans, DSR and the Shire partnership is a good one and in this case has delivered a multitude of outcomes in the one spot, with no cost for participants,” he said. The AFL level 1 course ran simultaneously with the Frank Butler stakeholders’ meeting and the Sports Medicine presentations and it seems that this forum is one that the community supports with positive feedback for both the content and the concept. There are plans for up to two more sessions this year with the next in March where planning is in place to appeal to an even wider range of sports and community clubs.

KARRATHA ROOSTERS

PRE SEASON HAS BEGUN Karratha Roosters pre-season has begun, all old and new members welcome. Training starts 6.30pm Tuesdays and Thursdays at Millers Well Oval. For more information call Dallas on 0417924532.

Last Saturday night, the Nickol Bay Speedway Club hosted the first of the Skid Saturday Series events for 2012 to a crowd in excess of 500 people. The competition on the pad was stiff, with only three of the 10 competitors having to bow out of the final, due to mechanical problems. Regular competitor, Russell Casey, bowed out due to tyre-issues after two successful rounds, Club Vice-President, Joss Eygenraam had a bit of a flame show at the end of his first round, leading to some electrical problems (problems do tend to occur when you melt the wiring), and Club President, Luke “Lucky” Kealley... well... he yet again demolished MORE of his car by destroying his rear uni-joint and blowing his gearbox & starter-motor to pieces within the first 15 seconds of the first round (having spent most of the week leading up to the event rebuilding his drive-line after last event’s fire-works). “We won’t tell you what his missus just said” the commentator, Brett, remarked over the PA when they were told of the extent of the damage. A surprise contender turned out to be Karratha Smash Repairs’ own Caitlin Couper, a 17 year old Street-stocks and Ladies’ Division driver from Nickol Bay Speedway who put on quite the show for the crowd before having to bow out halfway through the finals due to mechanical problems.

Missing out on a top-three place by only a few points, Caitlin certainly proved a point - anyone can compete, no matter what your age, gender or experience! First place went to first-time competitor Brad “Thommo” Thompson. Thommo certainly couldn’t keep up his poker face as he let out several whoops of joy upon learning that he had taken out the first prize. He held off the spirited enthusiasm long enough to thank his sponsors and supporters, Rhamp Mechanical and United Oil, Danny Eygenraam, and Matt from Komatsu for their work on his Holden VP Commodore, and even threw in a big shout-out to Nickol Bay Speedway and their sponsors for hosting the event and for the extensions of the burn-out pad. Second place went to regular competitor, Dan Clift, who you’ll all remember by his car’s distinctive “dandan-dan” song, and third place went to a first-time competitor, Paul Rowe from Pilbara Bricklayers. Club President, “Lucky” would like to thank all of the individual cars’ sponsors for helping create such a magnificent field of competition, Rhamp Mechanical and United Oils for sponsoring the prizes for the winner and runners-up and also all of the club members who volunteered their time to work in the canteen, bar, pits, in-field and assist with the preparations to put on such

a great night, the guest judges from Pilbara Echo, Pilbara News and GWN, the sponsors of Nickol Bay Speedway, all of the spectators who came along to show their support, and a special shoutout to Mr and Mrs Eygenraam (Joss and Danny’s parents) who worked on the entry gate all night! Many of you would have noticed that last night’s pad was a tad bigger than last year. Okay, maybe “tad” is understating it a bit... more like 33% bigger! This is thanks to a wonderful collection of local businesses who donated their time, efforts and products to add another three metres of length and width to the pad: Mobile Concrete Solutions - for donating fourteen cubic metres of concrete, Concrete Logistics - for donating five cubic metres of concrete, and finally, Rob’s Concreting and Pilbara Bricklayers for all of their work on building the new pad extension! Great work guys! The next Skid Saturday will be April 14th with the first Club Race Meet for the 2012 Season following on April 28.
