Thanks for taking part in the program. H2 ome Smart, the Water Corporation’s 12-month program to help households in the North West reduce their water use, is now complete. And with preliminary savings equivalent to 83 Olympic sized swimming pools of water, it has been an undoubted success. A big thank you to everyone who took part. By being H2 ome Smart, you have been an integral part of our community’s effort to save water and secure the water future of the North West region.

Now it’s vital to keep on saving. Now you’ve adopted water saving habits, it’s important to keep them up. Especially since we live in a climate where rainfall patterns are unreliable and our increasing population means demand for water will continue to grow. Scientist ‘wows’ community at workshops

• Dr Ed Sobey with some students from the local primary schools

Pub bash and run By Courtney Bertling Karratha Detectives are asking for anyone with any information regarding a bashing at Evolutions Lounge Bar on Sunday, 3.40pm to come forward. Last Sunday afternoon, a co-owner and manager of the pub was leaving with the banking in hand when a male jumped, assaulted and robbed him, leaving with a substantial amount of money. The man was wearing a black hood, however, when removed was described as Caucasian, fair skinned and in his mid-20s.

Innovation guru, Dr Ed Sobey, inspired Karratha community members as he delivered his revolutionary series of workshops on Saturday, March 17 at Centro Karratha. Dr Sobey hosted workshops where participants were able to design, create and test working models that illustrate physical concepts in science and investigate engineering methods. With a strong focus on an ‘creative economy’ as the way of the future, Dr Sobey believes students and workers

need to be equipped with problemsolving skills, not just the ability to memorise facts and take tests. “The 21st century requires workers to be creative and solve problems – tasks that are outside the scope of most education activities,” he said. “Our workshops are challenging and provocative in the sense that they provoke people to learn more. “We’ll get participants having fun, which is the best way to learn – I want to inspire others to be curious learners.”

Since starting out as a researcher in polar oceanography, Dr Sobey has directed science centres globally, hosted the TV show ‘The Idea Factory’ and helped found the US National Inventors Hall of Fame and National Toy Hall of Fame. He has also published 27 books on science, technology, inventing and learning. Dr Sobey was recently visiting Karratha, in partnership with Scitech, as part of the Inspiring Australia initiative.

WA’s growing pains require urgent medical attention.

He is of slim build, with a light-coloured two or three crew hair cut wearing a yellow high-visibility long sleeved shirt and normal worker pants. He was seen jumping in the passenger side door of an ‘dirty blue’ older model Honda Sedan with a distinctive old black roof rack with two separate bars going across the roof. The car had blue and white number plates, which was being driven by another Caucasian male, who turned left on Balmoral Road heading towards the Dampier Highway. Karratha Detective Senior Sergeant Adrian Richards said it is very concerning and serious. “It was obviously planned,” he said. When asked if police thought it had anything to do with the 19-year-old Irish teenager who was bashed by another coowner and manager of Evolutions a few weeks ago, who still remains in a coma; Detective Richards said it was ‘hard to say’. “Nothing has lead us towards that conclusion,” he said. If anyone has any information, they are urged to call the Karratha Police Station on 9143 7200.

Over the next 30 years our population is set to double. WA is the fastest growing state in the nation and forecasts indicate we’ll need a significant number of new doctors over the next 10 years to cope with the growing demand on our healthcare system.

We want to help by opening a medical school at Curtin University in 2014. Curtin University has submitted a proposal for a medical school to the federal government. Now we need your support to ensure this essential training facility is established here, for the benefit of the entire Western Australian community.

Why Curtin University? • Our proposed school wouldn’t duplicate existing degrees in WA. We would offer a new way of educating medical students, and provide the only five-year direct-entry undergraduate medicine degree in our state. This would result in more doctors in the workforce sooner. • We would address doctor shortages in rural and regional WA. Our proposal includes establishing a number of clinical schools in priority rural and regional locations across the state. • We already have a strong history in health education. Curtin teaches most of the allied professionals in WA, and we are currently leading the way in providing a team-based approach to teaching that will improve patient safety and quality of care. • We would provide more choice for those wishing to study medicine in WA. Without Curtin’s proposed medical school, school leavers would need to move interstate to commence a medical degree straight away, and that could mean fewer doctors for WA in the future.

How you can help. Help us show the federal government that you support Curtin University’s proposed medical school here in WA. Visit www.doctorsforthefuture.com.au or call 08 9266 3985 and register your support by 31 March 2012. You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter, and share our message with your friends, family and community. Make tomorrow better.

Help us keep Karratha tidy.

I got stuck in a cyclone But Lord, was I well prepared ‘Cause I swapped me thongs Put me gumboots on Come an’ get me’s what I dared.

I got stuck in a fearsome thing Plucking chickens as it roared right in And on my back porch There I held my torch And awaited its almighty din.

I got stuck in a cyclone Well, not exactly, no With my shower cap tight All set for the fight And my gumbies and torch on show.

I got stuck in a beastie So I tied my caravan down With a piece of string As the winds did sing No way would I look a clown.

I got stuck in a tyrant thing That’s the one what hit Pardoo Pulled a bowser out With its mighty clout Flattened trees in a right royal stew.

I got stuck in a rainstorm Stuck inside set to babble It was sort of ok Like a Melbourne day And a 12 hour game of Scrabble.

I got stuck in a monster But protected, yes indeedy Watched the weather map In me shower cap No way I’d ever be needy.

I got stuck in a mania As it slapped around old Yarrie Ripping rooves like paper, A soggy caper Showing off to every Tom, Dick, Harry.

I got stuck near a cyclone in Hedland, down Where some bloke mowed his lawn Much to some folks’ scorn On that long, very very long day.

Millars Well & Bulgarra residents – work is underway The Pilbara Underground Power Project (PUPP) is a partnership between the Government of Western Australia (through Pilbara Cities) and Local Government Authorities, delivered by Horizon Power. The project aims to provide cyclone affected Northwest towns with a safe and reliable power supply, replacing ageing overhead electricity infrastructure with underground networks. O’Donnell Griffin, the contractor undertaking the works, is progressing in Bulgarra and Millars Well. The first changeover from overhead power to underground took place on 16 August in Viveash Way and to date 118 properties in Karratha have been undergrounded. This is a major electrical project that has four stages of work:

Free Weekly 24 - 25 March 2012

Impact on you The external cables between the front boundary to the meter box, and along the street verge will be installed using underground drilling or open trenching. The contractor will door knock before work on private property commences. You will be notified when access into your yard is required. If your switchboard is inside your house, access into your house will be required. All verges and work areas are recorded before work commences so they can be repaired to a similar standard after the work takes place. Care will be taken at all times to minimise the impact of this work on your property. However, some disruptions to verges and front gardens will occur. At the different stages of work, there may be an interruption to your power supply for up to four hours. You will be notified at least three days prior. In the event of a yellow cyclone alert all open excavations are backfilled.

Millstream scout camp By James Vaissiere At the beginning of March, 17 scouts and our leaders from the 3rd Karratha Scout group set out for a three-night camp in Millstream National Park. The aim of the camp was to help make a positive difference to our delicate eco-system in the park, as well as prepare for the Australian Jamboree near Brisbane next January, by completing some badge work needed. We were largely independent, cooking all of our own meals, preparing and cleaning the campsite and organising ourselves. On the Saturday, March 3, after a 2km hike through the bush, we arrived at a small section of one of the many rivers in the National Park to begin clearing out a small weed known as the Indian water fern, which has been damaging the native flora and fauna and the habitat in which they live. Apart from a close encounter with some rather large spiders, we managed to have a great time and help the environment at the same time, clearing out a sizeable pile of the weed. And despite Lachie being put up to feigning injury to get the rest of us to make a stretcher to carry him, everyone managed to make it home in time to make dinner.

After a delicious dinner of freshly cooked spaghetti bolognaise and a fun game of spotlight, we headed off to bed in preparation for the next day’s activities. Despite having difficulties removing ourselves from our sleeping bags to get breakfast and prepare for the day’s activities on Sunday morning, we then proceeded on another light 2km hike to a local river quite literally just down the road from the campsite. Working as a team to carry the canoes, brought to the crossing by a handy support vehicle, we made light work and were soon in the water paddling in the canoes and generally having a great time. At around 5 pm, we returned home after packing away the canoes, and managed to make it back to camp without any imaginary swollen ankles. On the Monday morning, after a breakfast of pancakes and cereal, everyone mucked in to get everything packed up and into the trailer before the closing parade and the journey home. All in all, everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and not even carrying a scout 2km on a makeshift stretcher in 40 degrees heat or spiders the size of dinner plates could dampen such a great weekend!

PMA take out WA award By Courtney Bertling The Pilbara Multicultural Association sure has made a huge impact on the local community by bringing people together. And the Office of Multicultural Interest, a division of the Department of Local Government, has also seen this impact and has awarded the PMA with the WA Community Service Excellence Award at their recent ceremony in Perth on March 14. This award recognises a notfor-profit organisation for accomplishing outstanding work in advancing multicultural inclusiveness and participation. PMA president Anand Subramoney said that over the years, the PMA has been heavily involved in getting the community together through events that they hold. “The PMA has been focusing on specific cultural groups in order to promote awareness and acceptance within our community through the sharing of information, music, dance and food.”

Mr Subramoney said that he was not informed before the ceremony, but when he started to receive numerous phone calls from the organisers regarding his attendance, he got a bit suspicious. “This would not have been possible had we not been recommended by Shire President, Fiona White-Hartig, nor the submission that was completed and sent by Raelene Gill from the Community Development team at the Shire. “ The PMA are very proud of their achievement and ecstatic as it is such a prestigious award. “We had a committee of only six people, and for that group to have pulled off what they did in 2011, was nothing short of miraculous,” Mr Subramoney said. “We only hope that we can keep on doing things for an even broader community in the Shire. “We could not have achieved any of this without the continuous support of local businesses, schools, family and friends, the Shire and the community.”

Traveller packs to help curb litter Visitor centres in the Shire of Roebourne have teamed up with the Cleansweep Taskforce to deliver a new litter prevention initiative in 2012. Visitors to the Shire can now collect a free clean up pack, which contains a large litterbag, a car tidy bag and a pocket ashtray from the Roebourne and Karratha Visitors Centres. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona WhiteHartig said the initiative encouraged travellers to take litter with them and dispose of it responsibly. “A large number of visitors to the Shire use our nature-based camping sites and facilities are limited at these sites,” Council White-Hartig said. “The more we can encourage visitors to our region to take their litter with them the better.” Karratha Visitor Centre Manager Barry Harris said the packs were particularly useful for travellers and would encourage them to respect our Shire. “The packs are a fantastic idea and, plus, people love getting free stuff,” Mr Harris said. Cr White-Hartig said the Shire’s Waste Services crew regularly empty bins at camping areas within Shire boundaries. “However, during peak tourist season the bins can be filled to overflowing within a short period of time,” she said. “We hope this new initiative will reduce the amount of litter being left behind.” The Cleansweep Taskforce is a joint initiative between the Shire of Roebourne, Western Australia Police and funding partners Rio Tinto, Woodside and the North West Shelf Joint Project. Additional funding comes from Royalties for Regions.

Crime and safety prevention The Wickham and Point Samson community now have crime and safety contact numbers easily accessible following the recent distribution of thousands of magnetic dog clips to all households. The delivery is part of a community, crime and safety information programme developed by Rio Tinto, WA Police and the Shire of Roebourne. The initiative is a result of community feedback on the need for a quick reference point for important crime and safety contact numbers, so they can call quickly and easily with

any issues or concerns. Rio Tinto community project officer – Wickham Taryn Higgins said the magnets had been well received by the community. “This is the first step in providing key information to the community on how to contact the police, Shire or Rio Tinto at any time with concerns or issues they may have in regards to community crime or safety,” Mrs Higgins said. “Rio Tinto works closely with WA Police and the

Shire of Roebourne to continue to develop new initiatives and strategies to support the local community and reduce crime in the area.” For more information about the initiative please contact Shire of Roebourne Cleansweep Taskforce coordinator Kelly Manning on 9186 8555.

During the workshop, Dr. Ed Sobey spoke about innovation and inventing, and then students were aked to work together to build a balloon car. Dr. Ed Sobey believes that taking an innovative approach to teaching and learning engages students in learning and prepares them for the dynamics of an unpredictable future. “This approach increases the effectiveness and speed of learning and excites the students’ interest to learn more,” he said. “It follows the innovation axiom that it’s not what you know; it’s what you do that counts.” The students were engaged with hands on activities and left inundated with ideas to try in the classroom.

• Brenton and Lockie after their shave

St Luke’s aid in shaving donations By Courtney Bertling St Luke’s College did their fair of raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation when two year 12 students shaved their hair at the school on March 16. Brenton Wilcocks, who originally had a hair-do resembling Side Show Bob and Lockie Smith with the help of some fellow classmates and inspiring ‘hairdressers’, took to the clippers with a goal of $1000 in sight. Apart from donations coming in from the Karratha Golf Club, the boys kept all other donations school based. “St Luke’s College is our school, so we thought we would shave our hair and raise money through the school,” Brenton said. “The school is somewhere where we are everyday, we know everyone and it’s easy

to go around with a little moneybox and raise money,” Lockie said. Originally, the idea came from Brenton’s sister mentioning the Leukeamia Foundation and the reasons behind the World’s Greatest Shave. “We just thought it was good idea, and we needed a haircut anyway,” Brenton said. “Shaving my head is a very simple thing to do for a big cause,” Lockie said. “It’s a good way that I can help people who need it the most. “The response we have received is really great, the teachers, staff and students have all donated, we have all worked together to raise the money. “We weren’t pressured into this by anyone and everyone have been really supportive.”

Crazy Hair Day at St Paul’s The students at St Paul’s Primary School were treated to a day of colour when the school celebrated Crazy Hair Day on March 16. The students were encouraged to give a gold coin donation to help raise funds for the Luekeamia Foundation. A hair spray station was also set up, where parents came in and hair sprayed the student’s hair all different colours. There was blue, green, pink, red, yellow and even a mixture of all. Principal Santinto Giancono said

that is was great to see everyone from the students to the staff getting involved. Mr Giancono himself had a number of different wigs that he wore during the day including a hairstyle that captured the ‘Billy Ray Cyrus’ in him. “I have seen so many wild and wonderful designs that the kids have come up with,” he said. “This (Crazy Hair Day) is so important as it gets kids involved and made aware of the cause at a young age.”

Nickol Bay Jewellers is a family owned business located in the Centro Karratha Shopping Centre owned by Dirk and Heather Telkamp and managed by Lesley Clark and her team. Nickol Bay Jewellers is part of the Showcase Jewellers Group, which is comprised of over 250 independently owned jewellery stores throughout Australia. Being part of Australia’s leading jewellers throughout Australia provides Nickol Bay Jewellers with a buying power that is second to none. Dirk, Heather and Lesley have extensive experience in the Jewellery industry and attend local and international jewellery trade fairs on a regular basis. This ensures Nickol Bay Jewellers is stocking the latest in jewellery trends and designs. “We pride ourselves on being a little bit different to the ordinary jewelers, supplying customers with what they want rather than something that they have to choose from,

• Dirk and Alex from Nickol Bay Jewellers showing off some diamonds depending on what is available in the shop at the time,” Dirk said. “We make up a lot of jewellery, a lot is made up from broken, unused jewellery and we make it into something new and beautiful. “Diamonds are our strength, I travel to Antwerp, Belgium (the diamond trading capital of the world), and source the most carefully selected diamonds for the valued customers of Nickol Bay Jewellers.” If requested, the customer’s diamond can be sourced by Dirk direct from Antwerp at a very competitive price.

“We like our challenges, so instead of just buying something off the shelf, the customer can choose how they want their jewellery to look and we will cater for that,” Dirk said. “Our staff is the key to our business, we are blessed with our wonderful local staff.” Nickol Bay Jewellers was established in 1985 and like Karratha, has grown from humble beginnings during 25 years of servicing the Pilbara community, into a dynamic, successful business specialising in diamonds and fine jewellery. buy local pilbaraecho

Misadventures of dating in the Pilbara

Wildlife watch: Brushtail Possum By Jenny Fox

K

While we do actually get a brushtail possum here in the Pilbara this little cutie named Sid is a common brushtail and was in the care of a friend of mine in Gladstone Qld. This species of possum is the most common and is larger than our northern brushtail, being the size of a domestic cat. They basically live anywhere there are trees especially open forests and woodlands. While cohabitating with humans, possums often create all sorts of problems for the home owner. They are notorious for getting into roofs and wall cavities or anywhere it is dark, running amok when the lights go out. I’m sure there would be people reading this that have had experiences with possums and know exactly what I’m talking about! As stated they are a nocturnal animal and mainly arboreal using their sharp claws to climb. Their diet is mainly a variety of leaves but they supplement that with fruits, flowers and even meat if it’s offered. At the time the photo was taken, Sid was still drinking milk from a bottle and was sleeping in a little sling sewn up as a tube suspended in a large (escape proof) cage. The way Bronwen describes his antics reminded me of a playful ferret! In and out of her hair and jumper and not to mention the noise he made while rampaging around in the night. It didn’t take her long to move his cage to the laundry so she could get some sleep. These animals breed in the autumn and one baby is born after approximately

Free Weekly 24 - 25 March 2012

By Pilbara Romeo eighteen days gestation. The baby then spends 4-5 months in the pouch, emerging to ride on mums back for another two months where the weaning commences. It is during this time that babies are sometimes separated from mum or fall from the tree. For the majority of the time the mother will come down and get it (if there is no danger to her) but if not the animal will perish or be bought into care. Babies also come into care when the mother is hit by a car while crossing roads. This is how Sid came into care. While they are an Australian native animal this critter is top of the feral animal list in New Zealand where it was introduced in 1840. They have become a major forest pest and are a host for bovine tuberculosis. Their skins support the fur industry over there. I know any Kiwis reading this will verify this fact. In past years in most Australian states the common brushtail was killed in huge numbers for it pelt but is now protected on the mainland and in some parts of Tasmania.

While I’m at the bar, I see another man approach my date. He flirts. She giggles and furtively glances at me. ‘Oh don’t worry about him. He’s just a friend.’ A what? Downgraded from potential suitor to unsuitable handbag before I even had a chance. Now I’m in the friend zone. It’s a well-known fact that every girl that you’re friends with was at one stage a girl that you wanted to bed. The possible exceptions are family members and your mate’s misses (and even then it’s probably crossed your mind. I mean if he died…). I first met Swedish Nina at a house party. We chatted about Saabs and Stieg Larsson, really hitting it off. We traded numbers and, as she was new in town, she suggested I might be able to show her the sights of Karratha. I didn’t need to be asked twice.

After some encouraging text banter throughout the week, I contrived to get her invited to a mate’s BBQ so we could ‘run into each other’ again. My strategy was to avoid appearing desperate; I assumed playing a slightly longer game would pay off. It seemed to be working. As she was on her way out I asked her to go for a drink. She agreed and we set a date. Fast forward to another man swooping on my prospective woman. How did this happen? Once you have been classified as a friend you’re screwed. You will always remain a friend. The annoying thing is that this could have been easily avoided. All I needed to do was adopt that alpha male mindset; see what you want and take it. I’ve tried being a gentleman who waits at the fence, hoping the Swedish deer will wander over. So here I am again, adding another name to my evergrowing list of Facebook friends. I should have made my intentions clear from the start. Next time I’m just going to push open the gate and go pet that reindeer.

R2R Services create a ‘home away from home’ By Courtney Bertling Situated amongst the red dirt of the Karratha LIA, are two villages managed by R2R Services. Walking through Cherratta Lodge and Velocity Village, it seems like you have stepped away from the Karratha ‘working’ atmosphere and entered a luxurious resort. This is just one approach R2R Services use when managing their clients. R2R Services is a village management specialist, providing operational solutions to remote infrastructure projects, answering every service challenge: routine or unique. Western Australia owned and internationally experienced; R2R Services is strategically and geographically positioned to provide agile, front-line solutions to the client. R2R Services operation manager Eamon O’Niell said that R2R Services is a hospitality related organisation that provides village management, catering, cleaning, security and other peripheral services in order to manage and oversee village and lodge accommodation such as the Cherratta Lodge. The way Cherratta Lodge is laid out, it is not just accommodation, but also a restaurant, which is available to those staying at the camp and also for locals. “We can cater up to 250 people, which is not just for those who are staying at the camp,” R2R Services relief

manager Tony Middleton said. “We have a set price of $25 a head if you are not staying at the lodge or you can purchase tickets which you use over time.” Mr Middleton said that the company does things a bit differently when it comes to appearance. “These men and women who stay at the villages come here after a hard days work, so it’s good that they don’t come home to red dust everywhere, which I do believe we are achieving,” he said. “It is about up-market accommodation, people come here after a 12-hour shift and get to relax in an environment which is like a home-from-home situation, which is much better than being stuck on a mine site,” Mr O’Niell said. It is not just the look and feel that out-does many other villages, but also the one-on-one service people receive. When walking through the tropical feel of the Cherratta Lodge with Mr Middleton, he stopped and spoke to office staff, cleaners and also to a number of people staying at the village. During our chat, Mr Middleton also excused himself a number of times to say goodbye to staff and workers who were leaving for their R’nR. Giving off the personal one-on-one service that he and the rest of the R2R Services team provide. R2R Services provide the end-to-end service delivery model whereby their clients can be involved in all stages

• The gym is fully equipped for all your fitness needs - photo courtesy of Margaret Bertling of village design, construction and management. They market their client’s villages aimed at increasing the sales of accommodation units and meals. R2R Services represent a unique service that I have not seen in any other village, and as a local, I will be heading out to the Cherratta Lodge Restaurant for a meal that I have heard so much about. Town water tank to be upgraded The Water Corporation has started a $4.7 million of upgrade works this weekend to one of Karratha’s water tanks located near the Visitor Centre. The works will improve the security and reliability of water supply in the town. This is the final stage of a suite of works, which included duplicating 2.95 kilometres of water main on Stovehill Road and Karratha Road, completed in September 2011. Water Corporation North West Regional Manager Kerrie Chapman said the tank upgrade works started on March 24 and would also include some pipe cut-in works on Karratha Road. “There will be heavy machinery and increased traffic associated with the demolition and construction works, so for safety reasons we need to close vehicle access to the single lane track next to the Karratha Visitor Centre and the Lookout site,” she said. “We appreciate this is a popular tourist site so we are trying to look at how we can allow pedestrian access to the site where possible and we will open up vehicle access when work is not being undertaken when it is safe to do so.” The works are expected to be completed by September 2012. “We are urging people to contact our Project Manager if they are aware of any community events being planned during this period involving this area so we can take this into account with our scheduling,” said Mrs Chapman. Decmil won the tender for the tank upgrade works. K

They were brave By Courtney Bertling

Many took the plunge and shaved their head for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave last weekend at the Karratha Centro Shopping Centre. Organised by the Karratha Centro along with hairdressers from Head of Time, people queued up between 10am and 1pm to either shave or colour their hair. The cost was $10 for shaving and $5 for colour and in total Every Monday. they managed to raise $854.90. Friday Members Night 6.30-11pm, meals available The first person of the day to shave their hair was the brave Daphne Trevurza with her long naturally blonde hair. “It is those few dollars that are going to help the research,” she said as the hairdresser cut off her long plait of hair. “It’s just hair, it will grow back.” Another brave supporter for the cause was Blacky who when asked why he supported the Luekaemia Foundation, brought a tear to Enrolments now open for Term 2, 2012 everyone that listened. friends suffer from cancer. “So I will always support this cause.” St Luke’s College student, Hamish Munro is no stranger to going bald, being his third year for going under the clippers. “It’s such a good cause and it’s really fun,” he said as he held up his huge tin with more than $1500 inside. Another St Luke’s student, Mikayla Smith, originally had hair down to her waist. But after the last weekend she now has a number two hair cut to show off at school. “I’m so nervous, but excited,” she said before the shave. “I never thought that I would have the courage to do this.” Amanda Wilson was all smiles but secretly ‘packing it’ as she sat down ready for the hairdresser to cut off her hair. “Just imagine all the time I will save in the morning without having to do my hair,” she laughed. The biggest crowd on the day was when Cool Change employee Ashleigh Warrick stepped up to shave off her 51cm in length, healthy thick hair. There were gasps everywhere while her long plaited hair was cut off. The cheering began with people yelling ‘you still look as stunning as ever’ and others raced to the ATM to donate to Ms Warrick. “It is so amazing, my tin is completely fun,” she said. “I can’t believe how supportive everyone has been.” Donations are still being taken, if you would like to donate, visit www.worldsgreatestshave.com.au

Still caring for Karratha children forty years on Forty years ago, not long after Karratha was established to accommodate the workforce of the Hamersley Iron mining company, a pre-school was started for the families that came to work there. As homes and infrastructure emerged alongside ambitious new mining ventures, most of the planning was focused on the booming mining industry. The Australian Inland Mission (AIM), which had been in the Pilbara since 1913, had its own vision for a strong, healthy community in Karratha. As part of this vision, in 1972 the AIM opened Karratha Kindergarten, a mobile

preschool for children living in caravan parks. Today, Frontier Services, the successor in the Uniting Church to the Australian Inland Mission, continues the service as Karratha Occasional Care. More than 80 children now access the childcare service, located alongside the Karratha Family Care, which operates playgroups and children’s activities. Frontier Services regional manager WA Trish Thomson-Harry said that Karratha Occasional Care is a wonderful example of how we were there in the beginning and have continued to meet the changing

needs of the community,” said Frontier Services Regional Manager WA Trish Thomson-Harry. “Today, it is the only occasional care service in the town, providing flexible options for families in Karratha.” “Parents can bring their children in for a day or for an hour while they do the shopping, take a break or do whatever needs to be done.” Up to 20 children, aged two to five, are in care at one time. “They love being outside, riding on their cars and bikes and playing in the sand pit,” said Coordinator Katherine Ramage. “We do lots of craft and music activities as well,” she said. Back in 1972, the Karratha Kindergarten aimed to support the new families working in the booming mining industry, many of whom lived in caravan parks.

Child Care funding boost

19

Originally, a pre-school was located in the recreation room of the Rosemary Road Caravan Park. In 1998, when the Caravan Park was converted from a residential park to a tourist park, the child-care service moved to its current location inside the Karratha Family Centre. Providing childcare for families living in mobile accommodation and caravans is still a priority for Karratha Occasional Care. “We are still working to meet the needs of people who come to live in Karratha,” said Ms Thomson-Harry. As Karratha Occasional Care marks 40 years of service this year, Frontier Services celebrates 100 years since the establishment of the AIM and a century of support for the people living in remote Australia. North West MLA, Vincent Catania welcomed news that Child care providers in regional Western Australia can apply for Royalties for Regions funding of up to $10,000 under the first round of Regional Child Care Development Fund grants launched recently. At the announcement, Community Services Minister Robyn McSweeney and Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the grants would offer immediate support to ensure the long-term viability of quality childcare for families in country areas. The first round of grants is available to childcare providers to cover operational expenses such as professional development and training, information technology, capital equipment and governance requirements.

Esme Frances Davis 13 March 2012 Camilla and Simon Davies would like to announce the safe arrival of their baby daughter Esme Frances Davies, born at 9.17am on Tuesday, March 13, 2012. Weighing 8lbs 6ozs and 51cm long. Big sister Amelie is besotted with her sister. Simon and Camilla would like to thank the staff at Nickol Bay Hospital, including all the midwives, theatre staff, doctors and surgeon, with a special thanks for midwife Nicole.

Mrs McSweeney said priority would be given to those services at risk of closure or deemed in high community need. “If we want to build strong, vibrant regional communities then families in those communities need quality child care,” she said. “The aim of these grants and the Regional Child Care Development Fund is to ensure that families in regional communities have access to quality services.” Mr Grylls said regional childcare services faced particular challenges because of factors such as distance, isolation or lack of funds. “This is what Royalties for Regions funding is all about, providing additional investment to the State’s regional areas, supporting essential services for communities and helping strengthen growth and development in the regions,” he said.

Mr Catania added that he was certain that this extra funding would be welcomed in his electorate in particular. “There are many challenges that families face in the North West in getting Child care at present and any steps that are taken to improve the situation are to be highly commended and particularly necessary,” he said.

Pool fills up for the weekend

This weekend the Karratha Amateur Swimming Club is hoping for sunshine and blue skies for the annual North West Open Swimming Championships. Club President Sara McRobb and her team of committee members and volunteers have been working hard to ensure the meet runs smoothly. Officials and competitors from all over the state will converge at the Karratha Aquatic centre for the twoday event. Karratha club coaches Sara McRobb, Taarna Cam, Erin Shaylor and Kylie Rann have worked tirelessly this season to prepare their swimmers for the meet. This year is the first year that the program has no qualifying times, which will encourage all swimmers to participate and “have a go”. 208 swimmers have registered for the meet; some are novice swimmers as young as seven and others are more seasoned competitors such as Karratha veteran swimmer and Coach Erin Shaylor.

27

Shaylor has been training hard all season and will be competing in a number of events. Along with Shaylor, this year we also have a couple of new veteran swimmers competing. Paraburdoo’s Sharon Tesling and Jeremy Hogg have taken the plunge and joined their young team in the water. Events such as the North West Open would not be possible without support. The Department of Sport and Recreation have granted the Pilbara region funds this season, which has been vital in allowing the club to develop their officials, swimmers and coaches throughout this season. The Karratha Amateur Swimming Club would also like to acknowledge and thank all of their Club, Pennants and North West Open sponsors for their fantastic support and generous donations. To ensure you catch the action, head on down to the Karratha Aquatic Centre this weekend. Swimming commences at 8.30am.

Mixed up hockey heats up By V Swans regional development manager Clint Degebrodt The Mixed up March competition is building strongly at Bulgarra tennis courts with four full sides playing in three small matches last Wednesday night. The Pirates of Pegs Creek narrowly went down to the Nickol Tigers with plenty of action with the scores four-three at the buzzer. The Millers Well Wallabies bested the Bulgarra Rangers with ‘Raging’ Bill Maddock a standout at right inner and plenty of support from Trudi Tunstead and James Dalla. Round two saw the Pirates hand the Rangers their second defeat of the night with some tidy work from Gavin Canning from centre half creating multiple goal scoring

President Steve Cook said hockey is a sport for everyone. “Hockey is for all ages; men and women, from any cultural background, local or FIFO and of any ability, that makes hockey the ideal sport for the Shire of Roebourne Community” he said. “We (Nickol Bay Hockey Association) offer entry points into the competition throughout the whole year and you can play one game, one competition or the whole season. “We are placing a huge focus on our junior teams this year and with support from the Kookaburras and the development of our interschool hockey carnival the enthusiasm for hockey is outstanding.” The Kookaburras will showcase their skills and abilities throughout the evening of April 4, which will also be the Seniors Grand Final for Nickol Bay Hockey Association’s first mixed competition. The Kookaburra Players, Shane Tonkin the National Sponsorship & Marketing Manager, Grant Weir the National Game Development Manager will be available for interviews and a short briefing at a media breakfast between 7.30am and 8am on April 5 at the Karratha International Hotel who are assisting with the Kookaburras accommodation as part of their sponsorship of Nickol Bay Hockey Association. The Kookaburras visit supporting Nickol Bay Hockey Association’s Interschool Hockey Carnival, Junior Hook in2 Hockey Registration and Senior Grand Finals on April 4 is supported by Hockey Australia, Hockey WA, Fortescue Metals Group, Indigenous Services Australia, Shire of Roebourne, Department of Sport and Recreation and the Karratha International Hotel. opportunities for his team. The Wallabies took their match from the Tigers with five seconds on the clock twoone and with heavy hearts the Tigers turned to the last match against the Rangers with determination in their hearts. It wasn’t to be however with the Rangers holding on and surviving a penalty stroke to take the game three-two. Pegs Creek bounced back well defeating the Wallabies one-zero. Plenty of new players enjoyed the smooth surfaces down at the tennis courts with the occasional deviation from the resident grasshoppers. As always, new people welcome, just come down to the Bulgarra Tennis Nets at 6.15pm with your runners and the Nickol Bay Hockey Association will do the rest.

The Kookaburras will be in Karratha supporting Nickol Bay Hockey Association’s Junior Interschool Hockey Carnival, “Hook in2 Hockey” Junior Registration and Senior Hockey Grand Finals. The Kookaburras will arrive in Karratha as part of Hockey Australia & Fortescue Metals Group National Indigenous Programme, which will be their last break prior to departing for London where they will be competing on the world’s biggest stage! Five of the Kookaburras including Kiel Brown, Graeme Begbie, Trent Mitton, Liam De Young & Nathan Burgers who amongst them have won Olympic Gold, Commonwealth Games Gold, World Cup Gold and Champions Trophy Gold will be in Karratha on April 4 and 5 to support Nickol Bay Hockey Association’s Interschool Junior Carnival at Tambrey Oval from 1pm, Junior Hockey Registration at the Bulgarra Tennis Courts from 5pm and Senior Grand Finals from 6.30pm. The Junior Interschool Carnival will include five Karratha primary schools and Roebourne Primary as part of Hockey Australia’s indigenous programme. You too can get fit like Miss Alba By Courtney Bertling Many know Nathan Baxter as the guy with the muscles who, since July 2011, is the current Commonwealth Oceania and Australia bench presser holder, lifting a staggering 300kgs. Nathan is the only Level 2 Kettle Bell instructor north of Perth certified through the Australia Kettle Bell Institute, so he knows what he is talking about when it comes to kettle bells and fitness in general. Kettle Bell training first started in Russia in the 1600s but has becoming increasingly popular with celebrities such as Jessica Alba and Katherine Heigl training with Russian kettle bell trainers for head-to-toe fitness. Due to the popularity of kettle bell workouts, Nathan Baxter has designed a workshop to help locals with kettle bell training, suitable for beginners as well as the more experienced lifters. “It’s about training your body to move better, it is a complete headtoe-fitness workout,” he said. “The workshop is for people wanting to understand the basics of kettle bell training and become adept at training themselves. “The aim is for participants to become competent and confident

using a kettle bell. Nathan said there has been a great interest lately in kettle bell training, but a lot of bad information about training has been taught. “Even some careless trainers who are unskilled in kettle bell coaching, which causes injury,” he said. “As an experienced certified kettle bell coach I wanted to provide the opportunity for people to learn proper technique that will help them reach their fitness, health and sporting goals.” Nathan runs workshops regularly in order to keep up with demand. “I like to keep the workshops small so everyone gets maximum benefit,” he said. “All my workshops are capped between 12 and 20 participants depending on their level of experience.” The response Nathan has received has been over-whelming. “People loved it and are already putting techniques into practice with immediate benefit,” he said. “I will keep running workshops as long as people want to learn how to move better, feel better and improve themselves.”

Karratha Storm Junior Rugby League Club began its training in earnest with a large turnout of Juniors converging at Millars Well Oval on Tuesday. Junior Development Coordinator, Kerry Draper, said it was great to see so many youngsters out on the first day of training. She hopes that this is an indication of things to come after the 2011 season, when barely three Junior Rugby League Clubs were playing against each other in the Pilbara. Initial indications are good with Wickham, Port Hedland and Karratha Broncos looking at boosting their numbers as well. Current ages of players range from four-years to 18-years with a new format for girls starting this year. Girls will not be playing contact anymore, but will move to a League-Tag system of play – there is currently a competition running in Perth for League Tag (Girls).

30

All interested girls can contact the club if they are interested in joining. Tuesday’s session was enjoyed by approximately 50 players who dusted off the cobwebs and had a light run and drills. Tim Tupou from the Seniors team was on hand to lend a bit of support to the Junior coaches, but they definitely need more volunteers for coaching/ managing the teams. Storm are excited with the early involvement of WARL in the early stages of the season are expecting a few visits from some stars in May of this year! There is still lots of room for registration, so even if you haven’t played before, come and try at our training to see if you like it – Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5.30pm (Under 6’s, Under 8’s, Under 10’s, Under 12’s and Girls) and 6.30pm (Under 14’s, Under 16’s and Under 18’s) all at Millars Well Oval. To join Karratha Storm Juniors, please contact Kerry Draper on 0409 606 176.

The AFL 9’s program continued on last week with a special visit and skills session with Swan Districts coach Rikki Ryder. Ryder lead the group through skills and drills honed in her work as a development coach in the V Swans program and as a Swans and State representative player. “This is a big show.” Said Ryder about the Pilbara AFL Women.

“You would have to work hard to get these numbers elsewhere, but here, there are girls everywhere playing footy, it’s great!” The appreciative girls then got down to the evenings games with the running style of footy very evident from the first bounce on both ovals. The Panthers got the best of the Angels five to three with the Angels already showing they can develop new players. Rhi Ware was here usual dynamic best, Teneeka Searle again dominated with her run from half back and Shirley Gospar was a tower in front of the big sticks. New recruit ‘Kirsty’ showed that she will be a player to watch on the Angels list and Gemma Snowdon toiled hard in the Ruck. Hard Luck and Trouble took care of Naanda in their match with Naanda fighting hard and posting some terrific performances with Denise Mitchell settling in defence and the Garlett sisters once again getting a heap of ball. For Hard Luck and Trouble Kyla Thomas made a welcome return with Char Joseph and Storm Ferrier both very busy around the ground. In the turnaround match the Panthers took their match from Naanda five to one, which demonstrates Naanda’s improvement having gone down 10 to one earlier in the season. Meme Gospar stepped up in this match with sister Shirley sidelined with an ankle complaint and filled her boots well with strong leading and powerful marking. The Angels slipped against Hard Luck and Trouble two to one in a great match played between the half back lines. This Tuesday sees the Angels up against Naanda and the Panthers with Hard Luck and Trouble facing the same pair in the return games. As always, new players welcome on the night.

New riders, new skills By Courtney Bertling During the first of many fun days held by the Karratha Enduro and Motocross Club, committee member Robert McWhirter held one-on-one coaching lessons to new and novice riders. McWhirter coached riders for basic safety requirements. “That was a priority, with riding techniques to improve balance and control, we also helped out some new riders on how to get their bike set up right,” he said. McWhirter believes that one-on-one coaching is more effective because the coach can look at each individual and see what bad habits they have and try to change these habits. He said that it is important for

the club to be proactive in the community with regards to bike riding in general and more so in regards to safety when riding. “We see too many times where riders are injured severely mainly because they have made bad decisions about where and how they ride and not using the proper safety equipment,” he said. “More bad crashes happen off the race circuit than on it! “The response we got from the riders was extremely positive, with many adopting new changes when riding after the clinic. “We are always happy to help anyone who wants some help or just some advice, or even to fix their bike.”

What speedway has in store By Chantelle Dalgarno

If you’ve had a look at the Event Calendar for Nickol Bay Speedway’s 2012 season, you’ll probably notice that there are a few different types of race-meets on there. The most common question we get asked is: “What’s the difference?” Skid Saturdays are the newest addition to the calendar and by now, most people are aware of the concept so we’ll briefly remind you that they are dedicated burnout competitions to encourage people to “prove it on the pad” instead of being idiots on the roads. Club Meets are for the long-game players. Every heat of every meet gives NBSC racers a chance to accumulate points according to their placement in the race. These points are tallied across the season and at the end of year Wind-Up, titles and trophies are awarded to the divisions’ overall winners and runners-up. For a class to be eligible for points there must be a minimum of three vehicles registered to the club to form a division. Next up is Prestige Events, which are race meets where there is prestige or prize money on offer based solely on the results of that particular event. Typically, these events will have three heats to determine the grid-placements for the main feature-race. The winners of the feature-race are the winners for the event. The Prestige Events locked in for 2012 are:

Production Money Meet Sprintcar Spectacular Karratha Smash Repairs’ Street Stocks & Junior Muster FeNaClNG (2-night event) August 25 has been held aside for the Dirt Drags and Bikes; however, NBSC is still waiting to confirm numbers. If your company is interested in sponsoring a Prestige Event and gaining naming rights, please contact the club via: info@nickolbayspeedway. com And then there was one: Practice. Practice Day is not a race-event. In fact, there won’t actually be any competitive racing. Instead, the purpose of Practice Day is to give the racers a chance to test, tune and tweak their vehicles (and their driving skills) in a safe environment without the additional risks that come with racing. At any one time there will only be one to two vehicles on the track, giving everyone a chance to prove what they could be capable of (if the other racers didn’t get in their way). While the fans are welcome to come along for a free look, please be aware that there will not be any canteen or bar facilities, and our public amenities are currently undergoing refurbishment. For public safety reasons, the pits are strictly out of bounds to anyone who does not hold the appropriate racing insurances. Practice will commence at 3:30pm, Saturday March 31 (weather permitting).

Big fun for Swans Junior Girls By V Swans regional development manager Clint Degebrodt

The visit of Swans and state player Rikki Ryder to Karratha this week saw the launch of the Pilbara Swans Junior Girls competition at Bulgarra Oval on Tuesday night. The 30 girls aged nine-12 that experienced a real AFL game of footy can thank Tambrey teacher Dave McLaren for his vision and focus, and the students of St Luke’s specialist sport program. McLaren has spent three months planning and

promoting the event and thanks to his skills and passion for sport development, year foursix girls can now play Australia’s Indigenous game. Saint Luke’s specialist sport students Mikaela, Krystal and Sarah coached the teams with Ben lending a hand as an umpire, the girls were very appreciative of their expertise and showed some great skills. The program continues at Bulgarra Oval for the next two Tuesdays at 5pm and all girls are welcome to come down for a game. It’s real AFL, full rules and girls only!

Masters show skills By V Swans regional development manager Clint Degebrodt The Pilbara AFL Masters once again brought their touch and poise to the footy fields of the Shire with the Crocs, Ishmal, Hacks and the combined Mud Crabs and Baggers and Taggers matching up at Bulgarra Oval in the preseason cup.

• Starting of the start/stop activity

First event of many for motox By Courtney Bertling The big year of events for the Karratha and Enduro Motocross Club began last weekend, with the club holding their first fun day at the track. President, Shaun Barry said that the day was about getting riders that are new to the sport to come out have a go at motox. “They were able to see if they like it and we helped them out with any information that they needed, including safe riding, safety gear and bike maintenance,” he said. As well as current riders, the club took on 15 new members that have not been involved with the club before. The day involved five different activities held through the day including: The start/stop event – where two riders race in a line and have to stop in a box. The first one to stop in the box wins. The slow race – where riders race in a line, and the slowest person to go from one end to the other wins. The barrel race – four barrels are set up about 20m apart, riders then have to start at one end and go around each barrel in an order and cross

the start line to finish. The fastest person to do this wins. The wheelie competition – the winner goes to the rider that can hold their bike on the back wheel for the longest time over the greatest distance. The team relay – where teams consisted of one bike from each class and had to complete one lap each starting from the smallest to the biggest. “All the feedback that was received on the day and weeks leading up to the event was great,” Barry said. “People where very happy with the track and the changes that have been done around the club.” Barry said that more fun days will be held in the future. “It is something that we would like to hold throughout the year, we are also looking at holding a coaching weekend throughout the year as well,” he said. “I would like to thank Kevin and everyone that has helped to get the track ready and other work around the club done. “By the response to the changes that have been made to the track, it was a job well done.”

Ishmal played well in their encounter against the Hacks with Wayne Sharpe and Shane White standing tall. For the Hacks it was all about Marty Shepherd in the back half while 2011 MVP Darryl Wright returned to the midfield to give

the Hacks engine room some much needed grunt. The Crocs were spectacular against the Mud/Taggers and the match was highlighted by Ritchie Pollar’s running game and Greg Stott’s marking. For the Mud/Taggers Stan Begg smashed it up on his wing and Ben Griffith’s provided a target up front. The matches were as always played in great spirit and the boys welcomed a heap of new faces coming back to have a kick and a laugh and some light refreshments. Thursday Nights, 6.30pm at Bulgarra Oval, feel free to walk up and join in.
