600 Construction jobs to be created The go-ahead for a significant new processing investment on the Burrup Industrial Estate is a strong sign of confidence in the future of Karratha and the Pilbara, Premier and State Development Minister Colin Barnett said today. Mr Barnett welcomed the announcement by Burrup Nitrates Pty Ltd that it had made a final investment decision to proceed with building a technical ammonium nitrate (TAN) plant at an estimated investment of US$800million. “Value-adding to the Pilbara’s existing resources is an important factor in ensuring Karratha’s continuing growth as a major

regional centre, as part of the State Government’s Pilbara Cities Vision,” the Premier said “This announcement is especially significant because it is essentially a manufacturing project based on the natural gas resource. “As well as creating at peak 600 construction jobs, and 60 operational positions when it is commissioned in 2014, the Burrup Nitrate plant will generate significant additional local business opportunities and employment over its expected 40-year lifespan. The project will take ammonia, produced from natural gas, at the nearby Yara Pilbara Fertilisers plant

to produce a base ingredient for explosives, used by the region’s iron ore industry and other mining operations. The new plant will join one of the world’s largest ammonia production facilities and two operating LNG facilities on the Burrup, strengthening the Pilbara as a major Western Australian resources processing region. Mr Barnett said the Department of State Development, as the Government’s lead agency, had worked with relevant agencies to help Burrup Nitrates meet approvals requirements and secure land for the project. He congratulated project partners Yara International

ASA, Orica Limited and Apache Energy Ltd for their commitment to the region. The project obtained State and Commonwealth environmental and Aboriginal Heritage approvals in 2011.

State budget looks good for the Pilbara The Pilbara region is set to benefit from more than $479.2million provided in the 2012-13 State Budget to build and support the community. Treasurer Christian Porter said the Pilbara region would gain from significant and sustained investment by the State Government in infrastructure and social initiatives. “The Liberal-National Government recognises the important contribution the Pilbara makes to Western Australia and is committed to improving the standard of living in regional WA,” Mr Porter said. The Treasurer said the $196million surplus provided in the State’s Budget for 2012-13 reflected the Liberal-National Government’s strong leadership and disciplined financial management. “This Budget helps ensure the continued growth of the Pilbara and is part of a longer term plan by the Government to maintain and strengthen the vibrancy of regional WA,” he said. “At the same time, the Government is supporting our community through targeted programs to assist those most in need.” Record investment in regional WA is also set to continue with a total of $1.1billion budgeted through the Royalties for Regions program in 2012-13. Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said that since the introduction of the Royalties for Regions program in 2008, more than 2,000 programs and projects, large and small, had been or were being implemented across the State. “These include transformational programs such as Pilbara Cities; Ord-East Kimberley Expansion Project; Mid West Investment Plan; Gascoyne Revitalisation; GROH Housing program; and the Southern Inland Health Initiative,” Mr Grylls said. “After three continuous years of unprecedented Government investment, Royalties for Regions is making regional WA a better place to live, work and invest than ever before.”

The Pilbara Poet

by Elise Batchelor

With both the Cossack Art Awards and the Hedland Art Awards coming up, my creative juices began flowing recently. Unfortunately, they flowed a little too much and, well, to be blunt, I’ll stick to my day job. Not that everyone doesn’t have a painting in them. It’s just that I’d best keep mine to myself and far away from the known universe.

A dirty poem This is a dirty poem. A poem that’s not clean. Not saying, oh no, not at all its contents are obscene.

This is a lonely poem, as I stand here, alone. I know no one will call me. Not one will dial their phone.

This is a grotty poem, as grotty as it gets. It fills me with obscenities and prods me with regrets.

For this dear dirty poem, of grot and slop and murk, of mud and all things splotty would send most souls berserk.

This is a sloppy poem, a poem filled with mush, of loosened words and splotty grotty oozing sorts of slush.

Indeed, a better poet I make than one who paints acrylic upon canvas with many, many takes.

This is a murky poem, with greys all goop and splosh, which make me stand way back and mutter, Oh my dear. Oh gosh.

Indeed a better ode constructor I believe I am, for staring at this grotty painting done by me, like spam,

This is a muddy poem, of blue mixed green and red And, just as I’d expected, my brown soul’s with dread.

I’m happy that it’s grotty, delighted I love writing, for staring at my murky painting I think, Oh. How frightening!

Study into Pilbara A study into non-government organisations in the Pilbara will commence soon. The Pilbara Development Commission in partnership with Regional Development Australia has commissioned a Map and Gap Analysis of nongovernment organisations to determine what support NGOs require to be sustainable in the Pilbara. The delivery of social services in the region is seriously impacted by the ability of NGOs to attract and retain staff, the high cost of accommodation and funding allocations. Therefore this study is being conducted to establish an accurate current overview of NGOs to ensure their capacity to deliver services in this region. Jill Cameron from Jill Cameron and Associates, who have been commissioned to conduct the study, is excited about their role in the project and is looking forward to working with the sector and stakeholders. ‘Services for children and young people, community health, aged care, housing support services and volunteers all have an important part in creating healthy and strong communities,’ she said. ‘Developing a better understanding of the Not

For Profit’s sector’s scale and diversity is an important step in planning for the sector’s growth and development to meet the needs of individuals, families and communities in the Pilbara into the future.’ The PDC recognises that as the region experiences unprecedented growth in the resource sector, social services need to be able to thrive and flourish in order for communities to be sustainably developed. CEO of the PDC, Stephen Webster, believes the study will highlight significant opportunities for improved support for NGOs in the Pilbara. ‘The region relies on nongovernment organisations to deliver many social services, and the Pilbara presents a number of key issues to these organisations that create extreme pressures,’ he said. ‘By developing a map of the current situation we, partnered with RDA, hope to identify ways to alleviate some of these pressures and ultimately increase the sustainability of these NGOs and the region.’ Results of the study are due to be released later this year.

EAST PILBARA SHIRE UPDATE Welcome to the heart of the Pilbara

June 2012

President’s Message Thank you for taking the time to read the Shire of East Pilbara update where you will find information about the latest news to affect you and your shire. The new roundabout at the intersection of Kalgan and Newman Drives has recently been completed and has proven to be an effective way to assist the flow of traffic at one of the busiest intersections in town. As a result, this update includes a reminder about the correct rules when entering and exiting a roundabout which I encourage everyone to read as a refresher! The Shire has added several new staff members in the past month and we welcome them warmly as they do their best to serve the East Pilbara region. In particular, I am pleased to introduce our Director of Technical Services, Rick Miller. Rick joins us from the Shire of Donnybrook Balingup where he has led the engineering department for the past eight years. He has over 20 years of local government experience in both Queensland and WA and will use this experience to lead the newly restructured Shire of East Pilbara Technical and Development Services. He will be striving to deliver services for the community and assisting Council to achieve our strategic goals in the exciting future expansion of the Shire. The first stage of lighting at Boomerang Oval has officially been illuminated in time for the winter sports program. I wish all teams the best of luck this season and encourage everyone to support our lively sporting community by participating in any way they can. Finally, please enjoy the photo of the Anzac Day Memorial service from Marble Bar. Lest we forget. Lynne Craigie: President Shire of East Pilbara

Marble Bar Race Weekend Friday July 6 to Sunday July 8 MFE C46681

Anzac 2012 – Marble Bar

Roundabout Rules

With its links to the “Secret” WWII Airbase at Corunna Downs, Marble Bar commemorates ANZAC Day in 2012 with the assistance of the Port Hedland Cadets at the new memorial located in R.S.L Park at Marble Bar.

The correct procedures are:

East Pilbara Lights Up The first stage of the lighting upgrade at Boomerang Oval was operational earlier this month with the occasion was marked by the Newman Senior Soccer Association having their first 7-A-Side scratch match for the season. While currently on a manual override, the next few months will see all remaining sporting ovals be illuminated that will be eventually controlled by a computerised booking system. The oval lighting upgrades funded through the Royalties for Regions and BHP grants will provide a major boost towards local sport and club development. Opportunities will open up for more passive and active recreation to be hosted in the evenings away from the heat and enable larger sporting competitions to be held locally.

Digital TV Switch Newman is due to switch over to digital television format in July 2012. All relevant information can be found at www.digitalready.gov.au.

To left turn – approach the roundabout with your left indicator on, check if it is safe to proceed and turn left. Going straight on - think in terms of a clock. If you’re coming in at number 6 and looking to exit at number 12, then providing it’s safe to proceed, enter the roundabout (no signal needed). When you get to number 9 or about 90 degrees before you exit, put your left signal on. Turning right – if you’re going to turn at number three, or go out the way you came in, you put your right indicator on as you approach and providing it’s safe to proceed you make your turn. When you get to 90 degrees before your exit, turn your left indicator on and away you go. Giving way – a driver entering a roundabout shall give way to a vehicle that is within the roundabout.

Newman Rubbish Collection The domestic refuse collection is now a single collection (May 1 – Sept 30). Double collection will resume again on the first day of October 2012. Transpacific Cleanaway are responsible for collection. For missed collection please call 9175 2598. 6 K

Gumala launches the “3A Project” By Steve Mav Gumala Aboriginal Corporation (GAC) has just launched an exciting new and unique early childhood learning initiative called the “3A Project”, which is a collaboration between GAC, Tom Price Primary School and the University of Melbourne.

Located at the Gumala 0-5 Studio (Early Childhood Centre) at the Wakuthuni Community near Tom Price, the 3A (Australian A b e c e d a r i a n Approach) Project is a pioneering education model for high quality early childhood education and care. The

Approach has begun delivering a proven, effective training program to our Traditional Owners’ children, focusing on effective educational activities that improve children’s learning outcomes and capitalise on children’s interactions with their parents and teachers. More specifically, the approach focuses on conversational reading, learning games and enriched care giving. The core, underlying premise behind the Abecedarian Approach (which is based on over 30 years of research) is the vital importance of the first 5 years of children’s lives. In the case of the 3A Project at Wakuthuni, the Abecedarian Approach has been tailored for a remotely located Indigenous community with the full consultation of the local community. Gumala appointed teachers,

has local who,

together with some community members, are conducting the classes.

My view is that investing in education is investing in GAC’s future.

We would like to express our gratitude to Tom Price Primary School for their assistance in helping to implement the program, as well as the dedication and enthusiasm that the teachers have shown to the project.

Education is a vitally important issue for me because our Members, the Traditional Owners, constantly remind me that the future of the Banyjima, Innawonga and Nyiyaparli peoples lies in the future of their children, their children’s children, and future generations.

Prior to the 3A Project kicking in, Gumala designed and constructed the Gumala 0-5 Studio (Early Childhood Centre) in partnership with The University of Melbourne. We have worked very closely with the university, as well as the Wakuthuni community, so we are elated that we are now delivering the outcomes that we anticipated. I sit on the Boards of the Tom Price Primary School and the Tom Price Senior High School and education is one of my passions.

Gumala Aboriginal Corporation is focusing very strongly on education funding initiatives. We are funding the school and university costs for many of our Traditional Owners and their children. We are also funding a range of other education expenses, including scholarships, rent assistance for students, tuition fees and much more. We have developed partnerships with many schools around the Pilbara. The rewards will come when the current

young generation, the youngsters that we are assisting to get a good education, reap the rewards that we hope that their educations will bring (the key one being, of course, employment opportunities). At Gumala, we look

forward to continuing to support and grow our capacity to deliver excellent education outcomes. After all, the education of our people – the Traditional Owners in the Pilbara – represents a very wise investment indeed.

WHAT’S COMING UP AT THE WALKINGTON AMPHITHEATRE

By Amanda O’Halloran Bechtel made a tremendous contribution to the School Garden Busy Bee earlier this month. They lent a helping hand to the Community Garden Crew, Leaping Lizards and the school teachers who were all keen to get the school garden up and running for Term 2, the prime growing season in Onslow. With limited volunteers this seemed like a huge job for a few and was slowly slipping off the ‘to do list’. Just when we thought there was no hope, in came Bechtel to save the day! Bechtel and their contractors Decmil arranged for over 35 volunteers to help out on their only day off. Community Manager Peta Hayto said that they just kept piling off the bus everyone couldn’t believe their eyes. “The volunteers hit the garden work with gusto and helped mulch the trees, top up and mulch the garden beds, take the rubbish to the tip, weed and generally

tidied up – and all this was completed in just over an hour,” he said. Community Garden Volunteer Geoff Herbert said that the volunteers made light work of the project. “And ensured that the kids could get out into the garden this term as they love to do,” he said. Bechtel have only been with us in the community for a short time, but have demonstrated that they are keen to really help the community and community groups. We are excited by the possibilities of the future and commend them on their contribution to date. The busy bee concluded with pizza and light refreshment in the Onslow Community Garden. Thanks Bechtel we couldn’t have done it without you. Special mention and thanks also goes out to Geoff Herbert, Urala Station’s Joe Armstrong for the donation of compost and NTC for the donation of soil for the garden beds.

At long last, the end is near Final clearances have been received for the Tom Price, Warara Street subdivision, from Rio Tinto and West Australian Planning Commission and titles have been issued for the new lots. The Boonderoo Road Stage 1 subdivision has also been completed, with the exception of the transformer upgrade required to power the new lots. Rio Tinto is currently undertaking this work and it is hoped to be completed around the end of May. Shire of Ashburton economic and land development manager Anika Serer said they are pushing hard to have sign-off for this subdivision so that settlements can take place before the end of the financial year and will keep purchasers informed as soon as we have further progress.

Additional accommodation for Newman Hospital Management and staff of the WA Country Health Service Pilbara proudly welcomed three new transient accommodation units in Cynthia’s Place at Newman Hospital this week. The building and commissioning of the three units are part of the successful $38.2 million Pilbara Health Initiative, a joint partnership between the State Government Royalties

for Regions program and the WA Chamber of Minerals and Energy’s Pilbara Industry’s Community Council and health initiative members (BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Chevron Australia Pty Ltd, North West Shelf Joint Venture, Rio Tinto and Woodside Energy), which aim to boost health services in the region. BHP Billiton Iron Ore is the principal industry sponsor of the

new transient accommodation units. WA Country Health Service CEO Ian Smith said the design of the new units was modelled on the style that BHP Billiton Iron Ore utilised for their own staff quarters, with an emphasis on energy and water efficiency. “With accommodation shortages across the region, these

units mean that visiting health specialists, executives and staff will have peace of mind knowing that short term accommodation is available,” Mr Smith said. “We are grateful to BHP for their support. “The commissioning of the three units is an important step in providing short stay accommodation at the hospital

Midwife experiences of the Pilbara Week 3, Chantelle Dalgarno Last week, JoJo Madin told the story of her experience with her midwives, as part of celebrating International Day of the Midwife, held on May 5. We at Pilbara Echo, wish to continue to recognise the hard work the midwives do and the appreciation from the families that they help. If you have a story about a midwife you may like to tell, email news@pilbaraecho.com.au. This week, Chantelle Dalgarno tells her story. Sally took care of me throughout my pregnancy, Chris took care of the nightshift and Rosa took care of the day shift while I was in hospital with bub. Shirley kept me company and taught me some little tricks and tips during those long afternoon feeds when Squiggle was too tired and I was too sore. My favourite, only because she’s a close family friend, is Sue Frantham who begged the others to swap her shift so that she could assist in the C-section delivery of Squiggle… because she’d delivered his dad 31 years prior!

With only one pair of feet to last us a lifetime, it’s important that we look after them. Unfortunately, most people don’t give their feet much consideration…that is until they hurt. There can be a number of problems that lead to foot pain, but often pain can be due to a faulty alignment of the bones of the feet and legs, combined with poor muscle function. Just as the wheel alignment of you car may be out by only a small amount to cause wobbles, shudders and premature wear; so can the mal-alignment of your legs and feet lead to painful conditions. Podiatrists – foot health professionals – are particularly interested in the biomechanics (the study of the way our body moves and functions) of the foot and leg and it’s relationship to the development of painful conditions which affect not only the foot but also the ankles, knees, hips and even back. The good news is that if the problems we suffer are caused by

poor biomechanics something can be done, with treatment often involving the prescription of foot orthoses. These are custom made inserts that assist in realigning your foot imbalances. An orthotic device (orthoses being the plural of orthotic) fits inside your shoe and places the feet in a better functional position, reducing mechanical problems and redistributing weight more evenly under your feet. A podiatrist completes a full biomechanical assessment before orthoses are prescribed, involving measurements of joint movement, muscle function and observation of walking patterns. If a mechanical problem is identified, a 3D optical scan of the foot is taken and sent via email to a laboratory together with your personal prescription. Custom devices are then made, specific to your needs and the type of footwear they will be worn in. Orthoses are probably one of the best investments you can make for your mobility and overall health and well being.

Institute sustains Pilbara workforce

• Katrina Suitor has moved on to become a highly skilled industryworker Pilbara Institute continues to provide the Pilbara workforce with qualified workers by producing well-trained and high-achieving employees.

Katrina Suitor, twentythree, is a strong example of successful graduates who have moved on to become highly skilled industryworkers. Having finished her Electrical Apprenticeship as well as Certificate IV in Instrumentation, Katrina was encouraged by Rio Tinto to pursue higher education. She has recently started an Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Southern Queensland. “I’m a full-time employee at Rio Tinto so I do my studies externally on my days off,” Katrina said. “So, it takes a lot of

motivation and discipline.” Towards the end of high school, Katrina enrolled in a school-based traineeship in Hospitality, even though her real interest was in race cars. This led her to consider becoming a mechanic as a profession. “Some of my friends at the time were Electrical Apprentices and they encouraged me to consider this field,” she said. “Here I am, three and a half years of study and two years of full-time work later, working at Rio Tinto as a Breakdown Electrical Maintainer and pursuing further study.” Katrina adds that her

apprenticeship at Pilbara Institute gave her a firm foundation on which she was able to build a strong career. “The support I received from my lecturers was paramount,” she said, recalling the time she spent in the electrical lab at Karratha campus. “The practical approach to training prepared me to function effectively in the workplace.” Katrina, driven by her positive attitude and high aptitude for learning, has a bright career ahead of her. “I plan to continue my studies and complete a Bachelor’s Degree,” she said. “Maybe one day I can call myself an Engineer.”

Help us cover the country with care Frontier Services today launches its Cover the Country campaign to raise the money it needs to continue to care for the people of remote Australia for the next 100 years. Every $20 that is donated will help Frontier Services provide a wide range of services, including children’s services, health care, aged and community care, pastoral support and volunteer assistance. This network of care stretches across 85 per cent of the continent from the tip of Cape York to the West Coast of Tasmania to the isolated Kimberley region and in between. Cover the Country is a special way for people to support Frontier Services this year as it celebrates 100 years at the heart of remote Australia. Frontier Services grew out of the work of Australian visionary Rev John Flynn – the man on the $20 note. “Flynn believed that all Australians should have access to services and care, regardless of where they lived,” said Frontier Services National Director Rosemary Young. “Today, we are still there serving rural and remote Australia, striving to break down the disadvantage created by distance and isolation.” “Today, Frontier Services, which is the successor in the Uniting Church to the AIM (Australian Inland Mission), asks people to give a $20 note so we can continue to support the people of remote Australia into the future,” said Ms Young. To donate, all you need to do is go to www. coverthecountry.com.au Every $20 donated will make a difference, helping to support their work.

Have your say on trail and quad bikes Rangers at Shire of Roebourne are calling on local residents and fly-in, flyout workers to have their say on the use of trail and quad bikes. Ranger Services Coordinator Dean Ball said a community survey would help gauge public perceptions on their use within Shire boundaries. “Trail and quad bikeriding is an increasingly popular way of letting off steam and our Shire boasts some spectacular riding trails,” Mr Ball said. “However, we often see trail and quad bikes being ridden in residential areas and reserves. “This can cause noise, dust and safety concerns and is often a source of annoyance for local residents. “In an effort to address these issues and the need for local riders to have legal and satisfying places to ride, the Shire of Roebourne has commissioned a study into the popular recreational pursuit.” The consultant engaged to run the study, Trail Bike Management Australia, will host the survey, which will be complemented by a number of site visits and community meetings to discuss possible

alternative riding areas to those currently available. Mr Ball said the online survey would give local residents the opportunity to report any concerns they had with trail and quad bikes and riders the opportunity to provide feedback about the type of riding they do, as well as the existing facilities. “We are also encouraging residents and riders to put forward their own ideas as to how we can best meet the needs of riders and the broader community,” he said. “Everyone with an opinion about trail and quad bikes, whether it is good, bad or indifferent, is encouraged to participate in the survey.” The survey is now available at www.tbma. com.au/roebourne and will remain open until 5pm on June 11. A link to the survey is also available via the Shire’s website at www.roebourne. wa.gov.au. Trail Bike Management Australia has conducted similar studies in the South West, was responsible for developing the State Trail Bike Strategy and has developed management plans for several off-road vehicle areas in Perth.

By Kahayla Walsh, Kaitlyn Balfour and Joelly Davey from Millars Well Primary School On Friday, May 11, Christal and Stephanie from Foodbank WA visited Millars Well to run their Food Sensations program. TA5 and TA6 were the lucky classes that were given the chance to learn about healthy eating and how easy it is to make healthy meals. Students from TA5 have written the following report. We met the presenters Stephanie and Christal from Foodbank WA in our undercover area. They had prepared a hands on activity for us to do as an introduction to the session. We were split into groups and we had to gather pictures of the different food groups and then create a whole class pie chart showing the recommended intake of each of the food groups. Stephanie then showed us pictures of takeaway foods and showed us how much fat and sugar each of the meals contained. These were then compared to homemade versions of the same meals; the difference was staggering. We then had to do 60 Star Jumps, which was quite hard work. Stephanie informed us about how many Star Jumps we would need to do to burn the equivalent calories of each of the takeaway meals. Four thousand one hundred Star Jumps to burn off a Fried Chicken meal was definitely an eye opener. The next activity was to make some of the delicious looking healthy alternative meals that we had just been shown in our canteen. Firstly, we had to wash our hands and we were informed that we needed to wash our hands for 20 seconds to ensure that our hands were adequately cleaned. Next we were put into small groups and allocated a recipe and ingredients. It was great fun chopping, preparing and cooking our Masterchef quality dishes.

• Learning to cook with Foodbank WA Once everything was cleaned up a wonderful spread of Mini Pizzas, Mexican Stuffed Spuds, Lettuce Rice Cups, Roo and Vegie Kebabs, Crumble Cups and Vegie Pikelets were laid out. We lined up and piled the delicious looking food onto our plates and then sat together sampling each other’s creations. The Crumble Cups were the biggest hit; these are a mixture of muesli, vanilla yoghurt and peach slices. We would like to thank Stephanie and Christal for coming to our school and for teaching us about healthy food. We would also like to thank Foodbank WA for providing our school with the School Breakfast Program. Over 365 schools across the state are involved in the Program, stretching from Kalumburu and Kununurra in the north to Esperance and Albany in the south, to remote schools along the South Australia/Northern Territory borders.

Project Update

B

The $110 million upgrade of the Dampier Highway is making progress and remains on track to meet its anticipated completion date of Summer 2012. The upgrade is a State and Federal Government funded project designed to improve the safety of the highway and create essential infrastructure to support the growing population and industry in this part of the Pilbara. Here’s a reminder of the work that’s taking place:

Road Alignment The new carriageways of the duplicated highway generally run parallel to the existing road. They will be located on the western side of the existing carriageways, except across the salt flats and rock cutting, where the new carriageway will be located to the east. A new bridge will be built parallel to the existing bridge where the duplication crosses the Seven Mile Creek. Strengthening and refurbishment of the existing bridge will also be carried out.

Intersections Madigan Road - The existing cemetery access will be modified, and a new access road to the cemetery will be created off Madigan Road. Steel Avenue - A new access to the Gap Ridge Industrial Estate is provided from Dampier Highway allowing left in and left out movement only. This road is known as Steel Avenue. Rubbish Tip Road - The access to the rubbish tip will be relocated about 300 metres further to the north of the existing road and will be renamed ‘Exploration Drive’. Seven Mile Access - This intersection will be closed, but upgraded facilities to access Rio Tinto’s operations are being provided at the current Six Mile Access.

T M o c

T

Carr Civil Access - This intersection will be relocated about 50 metres further north from the existing location. Two Mile Access - This intersection will be relocated further south. Burrup Road intersection - This intersection will be a concrete pavement with traffic signals controlling all turning traffic; except the left turn into Burrup Road, which will be a slip lane turning pocket. Dampier traffic heading north will also use a slip lane to bypass the lights. These options were being explored with stakeholders to ensure the final design is a workable solution for all road users.

Traffic Signals There are three sets of traffic signals designed for this project: at Madigan Road intersection, Exploration Drive (Rubbish Tip Access intersection), and the modified Burrup Road intersection. Traffic signals will help to manage the flow of traffic, both at these three intersections and at other access points such the airport turnoff at Bayly Avenue, where access to the highway will be made easier by the breaks in traffic flow resulting from the installation of traffic signals elsewhere. Roundabouts were not a suitable option for traffic flow management, given the type and size of vehicles that use the highway. They are also a ‘land hungry’ solution that would have a major impact on the surrounding vicinity.

Blasting Blasting is 90% complete and is currently suspended pending excavation work to expose any remaining hard ground. In consultation with the Construction Reference Group (CRG), the contractor Highway Works Albem Joint Venture (HWA JV) changed the blasting time from the specified 11.00pm - 4.00am to 1.00pm - 2.00pm. Night blasting is not common in the industry as it introduces a new set of risks with no visibility of the blast clearance zone and difficulties with clearing the shot or addressing any misfires should they occur. Traffic was stopped on the highway for an average of 15 minutes at each blasting event. During this time the blast zone was cleared with a siren run, the blast fired and the blast and road cleared prior to being re-opened to traffic. Relevant stakeholders and community members received a Blast Notification 24 hours prior to the blast and the blast boards were marked up the day of the blast in line with industry convention. Strict vibration limits specified for cultural heritage sites and gas pipeline infrastructure were maintained throughout the blasting program. Blasting adjacent to heritage sites was done with consultation of the Wong-GooTt-Oo; Ngarluma and Yaburara and Coastal Mardudhunera Aboriginal Corporation.

MUSICIANS RECEIVE ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY By Geordie Proudfoot

their songs.

Talented Tom Price musicians have been given the opportunity to record their original songs with professional musicians and engineers.

“One of the best parts of this job is seeing people’s individual achievements and increased confidence and we have really watched this happen with the musicians in Tom Price.

The three-week program, held in April, was part of the Western Australian Music Industry Association’s (WAMI) “sounds of” series of regional recording projects, which aim to teach remote musicians recording and production skills whilst providing a mentoring service. The program was conducted in a house donated by the Shire of Ashburton, which served as an informal studio for the musicians and a team of professional engineers from Studio Couch.

• Hayley Fleming

WAMI Regional Officer Nigel Bird said that the project was a once in lifetime opportunity for remote musicians, whose talents often go uncelebrated. “Musicians in remote areas don’t often have access to recording facilities, so many great songs and contemporary music works in WA have gone undocumented over the years,” Nigel said. “Although new technology is providing great opportunities for bringing artists closer to recording environments, it is important to develop the skills required to operate in these environments.” Nigel was highly impressed with the talent and diversity of the 15 Tom Price musicians who participated. “People in Tom Price come from all different places and the music reflects this – we’ve got everything from heavy metal to cold chisel and acoustic roots music,” he said.

Karratha

Nigel said that Tom Price was a fantastic town, a fact reflected by the sense of camaraderie among the musicians who participated in the program. “The great thing about Tom Price is that there is already a strong sense of community here” he said. “A music project has to work in a place like this because it is such a young community.” Nigel encouraged all musicians in Tom Price to get together and form an informal music club. “I will start the conversation about the music club but I can only hope that the local musicians make it happen,” he said.

Nigel said WAMI would continue to have a relationship with Tom Price musicians and foster the development of community music programs. WAMI will also supply artists with a master copy of their one recorded track, which can be used for many purposes, including seeking radio play, entering song competitions, festival and performance opportunities, and deriving income from sales or publishing opportunities. “We will stay in touch with participants and help them in any way we can,” Nigel said. “Ultimately it is up to the musicians to get together and create a music culture. This is an opportunity to start something that Tom Price has never seen before.” If anyone is interested in joining a Tom Price music club, contact Elissa Nash on 0447 409794. Photos courtesy of Julie Glover

“In a place like this music culture is at the mercy of a transient population and long working hours so it can be difficult.” Local artists have each had one song professionally recorded, which will feature on the ‘Sounds of Tom Price’ community compilation CD, to be released for free at the Nameless Festival in August. WAMI will also conduct promotional projects through various state and regional media outlets. “Hopefully the CD that comes out of this will help to educate the community on who these musicians are and will spur people to support local bands and musicians instead of getting bands in from the outside,” Nigel said. ROBIN HOODS OF THE HILLTOP TALK

BIG GIGS

AND WINTER THONGS

With ticket sales taking off for the inaugural North West Festival this August, Elise Batchelor catches up with Hilltop Hoods’ DJ Debris to find out what to expect from these headlining kings of Aussie hip hop.

Drummer “Plutonic Lab” will add to the lineup, as will “One Above” on keyboards and they’ll be pounding new tracks, including “Speaking in tongues” and the hit “I love it”, featuring Sia.

Six studio albums, ARIA awards, international shows, collaborations stretching from symphony orchestras to Sia, an upcoming national tour, not to mention a mobile app. and the Hilltop Hoods are busy boys.

(For north west readers craving trees, check out the video clip set in a Sherwood-esque forest, through which the band trails like Robin Hilltop Hoods).

This year they’re celebrating 21 years since forming (“We started when we were one,” laughs DJ Debris) and forging a place for a distinctly Aussie hip hop sound in the music industry.

TICKETS FOR NORTH WEST FESTIVAL ON SALE NOW! Sunset Events are thrilled to announce two more acts joining the North West Festival bill, creating the biggest line up the Pilbara has ever seen. Hilltop Hoods, The Living End and The Cat Empire will be blasting into the Port Hedland Turf Club on Saturday, August 18 and tickets went on sale on Friday, May 25. The one-day event is the first time a line up of this calibre is being delivered to this region and we’ve received amazing and very excited feedback. Tickets are now available for purchase from moshtix.com.au, moshtix outlets, and

selected North West outlets or by phoning 1300 GET TIX (438 849). General Admission tickets will be available for the excellent value for money price of $129. If you fancy experiencing the North West Festival in style, the VIP ticket option could be the one for you. VIP tickets are $295 +BF and include; • Exclusive access to a VIP Area which includes a shaded bar area and excellent stage views • Delicious hot dinner served in the VIP area • VIP bar access with four complimentary alcoholic drinks and four complimentary soft drinks

• Festival stubbie holder • Separate VIP toilets There will be two types of VIP and GA tickets available – one, a standard festival entry ticket and the other, festival entry with Camping. Please note, if you wish to camp, you must purchase the ticket option with Camping. You will not be able to change your ticket on the event day to a Camping ticket. There are tickets for Under 18s for $65 through the Family Registration program. Minors will be able to attend the event if accompanied by their parent at all times.

Port Hedland’s set-to-go-off music festival will form part of the band’s “Speaking in Tongues” national tour, which follows the release of their latest, fittingly titled album, “Drinking from the Sun”. These big gig veterans feel honoured to be headlining the North West Festival, never having been to the Pilbara. “And the warm weather’s an inviting thing, because it’s been pretty cold in the places we’ve been going,” Debris says. Indeed, the Hilltop Hoods have been hip hopping from Bendigo to Townsville, Canberra to Bunbury’s “Groovin’ the Moo”, among recent, diverse locations. “Your definition of winter’s pretty different from ours,” Debris muses, taking on board the suggestion that August here can mean swapping your summer thongs for winter ones. With perfect weather a drawcard, DJ Debris, along with fellow Hoods MC Suffa and MC Pressure, is hanging to ramp up this tour with more lights, music and action.

Old favourites such as “The Nosebleed Section” are guaranteed winners, but Debris loves playing fresh songs too and soaking in the audience vibe. “Our call and response stuff is a good gauge for how open a crowd is,” he says. “I always love the shivers up the spine when they’re louder than the PA system.” That said, RAUCOUS.

“Don’t throw your thongs at us,” Debris chuckles. “Once Suffa kicked a beachball back out to the crowd and his shoe went with it and he said, ‘If anyone’s got my shoe can you please throw it back,’ and it was just like a barrage of shoes!” Thongs aside, if you want to spoil DJ Debris, Suffa recently gave away a Twitter prize to the fan who could guess Debris’ favourite snack. Kingston biscuits win, Debris reveals. Adelaide’s Hilltop Hoods are big on inspiring talent and Hedland has its own hip hop kids, “The Hood”. Debris suggests that becoming good is all about persistence, “just keeping at it and not giving up and once you’ve released something or achieved something, using the momentum from that to keep going.” Hold onto your hoods, folks, Hedland’s in for one big 21st party.

ASH GRUNWALD TO

ROCK THE TAV With the recent announcement of Ash Grunwald’s forthcoming release of his brand new album Trouble’s Door, Ash will be heading to the Karratha Tavern, early June.

world have had critics and fans raving about his unique blend of roots, blues, beats and a whole lot of groove for more than a decade.

It was 10 years ago, when he released his first blues album called Introducing; but it was his second album I Don’t Believe released in April of 2004 that would change his state of play.

Nominated five times for Australia’s ARIA Awards, a swag of award wins including MBAS Blues Performer of the Year 2003 and the AIR Best Independent Blues and Roots Album and in 2009; taking out a prestigious APRA songwriting award for Blues & Roots Song of the Year.

He released a searing live album Live At The Corner. “When I play live, it has that four on the floor, modern pulse that we get from electronic dance music,” he says. He took his energetic live show to venues such as London’s renowned The Borderline and Shepherds Bush Empire, and opened for acts as diverse a James Brown, Bo Diddley, Keith Urban, Jack Johnson, Missy Higgins & Pete Murray. • Ash Grunwald will be at the Karratha Tavern on June 2

His album of 2010, Hot Mama Vibes, was nominated for Best Blues & Roots album by both the Australian Record Industry Association and Australian Independent Record Label Association and after a sold out national Australian tour, he capped off 2010 supporting Jack Johnson’s Australian tour. His first single from the album, ‘Walking’, received significant radio airplay and

was prominently featured in the Hollywood blockbuster, ‘Limitless’, starring Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper. His greatest achievement though has been the creation of his most internal album to date. Trouble’s Door, which was released on May 11, found life in the fiery breath of injustice; the frustration of severe political and environmental mismanagement. “It’s some of my personal songwriting, confesses.

Parenthood’s a drag for long-married sweethearts Jim (Jason Biggs) and Michelle (Alyson Hannigan), who dignify the nominally uproarious opening sequence with solo displays of masturbation. If the acting choices of Tara Reid ever since the first Pie make her very appearance a cruel punchline, the obligatory cameos for such peripheral cast members as Natasha Lyonne and Chris Owen serve merely to clog proceedings up.

HEAT UP THE MERMAID ❙ Ife Oladejo’s Hens Night at the Sydney Hotshots

❙ Ashliegh Allan, Erin Palumbo and Lea Crummer

Thursday, May 17 is a night to remember for the 250 women who were at the Mermaid Hotel screaming, as the Sydney Hotshots danced their way down to their undies. The choreographed dance routines had a number of different themes to them, including Captain Jack Sparrow who made an appearance at the beginning of the night. Captain Sparrow soon turned into a man with nothing on but a towel, dancing around to ‘I’m Sexy and I Know It’.

One at a time ladies were picked from the crowd and brought onto the stage to bump and grind with the men, until their cheeks were red from blushing. Some of the special ladies including brides-to-be and birthday girls got up on stage for a little competition, which was taken out by Ife Oladejo with a powerful performance. The ladies enjoyed their carefree night with champagne and Sydney Hotshots shirts that were being sold on the night.

People in the Shire of Roebourne travel a lot, and there is a lot in our region to entice visitors to come take-a-look-see. When we travel we take photos, and some of us record our experiences in diaries and journals as a keepsake, or to share. And some of us would like to go one step further… to capture our experiences in well-chosen words and fine photographs that we can put into a photo-book, or perhaps have them published (maybe even get paid for them).

K 23

But how to go about it? What makes a good travel article? What are the best markets for our travel articles and how do we go about approaching them? Soroptimist International of Karratha & Districts Inc (SI-KAD), with sponsorship from Woodside, are supporting Red Dirt Camera Club and Pilbara Writers Group, to facilitate an exciting inter-active workshop “Pictures and Words”, on June 16-17, at Cossack. Prize winning photographer, Abigail Harman and writer, John Harman, teach with the voice of experience. Abigail studied in the US and UK and over the past thirty years has worked as a medical photograhper, a fine art photographer at the Fitzwilliam Museum and now runs her own business specialising in portraiture and corporate and commercial photography. She had a series of greeting cards picked up and sold world-wide, by the international card company, ATHENA.

John Harman has written for a living all his working life, first as a journalist and for the past twenty years as a novelist, scriptwriter and ghost writer. He had four major novels published by Headline in the UK and has written for many of the UK’s popular television series. He’s had over a dozen non-fiction books published and ghost written a further 20-plus books. He is an adjunct senior lecturer in creative writing at Edith Cowan University. You can register for one of two categories - either as a Participant (for $200, you get to ask questions, and get feedback on your work); or you may want to register as an Observer, for $50. An Observer may be someone with a passion for either writing, or photography, but not both; or they may be a fledgling photographer or writer and want to learn more. 87 Extn 1, or email her - admin@ classicslee.com.au

Soroptimists, with sponsorship from Woodside, support Red Dirt Camera Club and Pilbara Writers’ Group, to make this workshop available.

E E D N U D F O T S E B E H T S T E G E L I D O CROC

There is just something to do with the letter ‘C’, that local, Clint Crudeli loves. This was apparent after last weekend’s celebrations with close family and friends, when Clint turned 30. The idea of the night was to dress up as something beginning with the letter ‘C’. There were crayons, cops, cowboys, clowns, the Cookie Monster, cheerleaders and the man of the night, dressed up as Crocodile Dundee. He even tried to take down one of the guys dressed as a crocodile, which pretty much backfired on him. Everyone had a great night, singing karaoke, having a laugh and dancing the night away. Bridge Progress The new bridge was opened to traffic on the 6th March 2012 and this has allowed refurbishment of the old bridge to commence. This is due to be completed by the end of June 2012.

Traffic Weekly traffic updates are sent to Main Roads WA for their customer call centre, and to other relevant stakeholders, as well as for broadcasting on ABC regional radio. Six Mile Access has been opened into Rio Tinto and Seven Mile Access has been permanently closed. Access to the rubbish tip is through the newly constructed Steel Avenue.

Two Mile Access will be permanently moved approximately 200m south and the Holcim Quarry access will be temporarily moved 50m south to allow construction of the new concrete intersection in the quarry.

Road Progress The new northbound lanes from just north of Madigan Road Intersection to Bayly Avenue (airport turnoff ) were opened to traffic on 23rd April 2012. Reconstruction of the existing highway from Madigan Road Intersection to Bayly Avenue is currently underway. Earthworks on Stage 2 are nearing completion and pavement works are about to commence.

A summary of the latest CRG meeting The most recent CRG meeting took place on Thursday 22nd March at Dampier Arcade, where members were informed of project progress and upcoming works. The project’s Community Relations Officer, Louise Richardson, provided an update of enquiries made by the public, which was followed by a Q&A session to give members the opportunity to voice their concerns.

The next meeting will take place in June 2012.

put in place both parallel to and under the road. Main Roads WA requires HWA to design drainage based on a 1 in 20 year flood event. Raising the road helps to address this, while providing the most robust road with minimal maintenance in years to come.

Q: Can blasting signage be made more visible? A:

Some of the questions raised at the meeting included:

Q: Where will water run off go, and why is the new road raised higher than the existing? A:

Q: What is the proposed treatment for the median strip? A:

There are a couple of run offs, including one salt pond. If the pavement was left at the existing level it would eventually collapse – Main Roads WA has had to invest significantly over the years in maintaining the existing road. With minimum fall either side, additional drainage has been

A request was made that signs announcing blasting be made larger/more visible so that they could be read easily by the travelling public. A review of the signage was agreed, but all agreed that given there is only one major blasting event to come this is not an ongoing issue of concern.

Main Roads WA asked HWA to obtain a costing for the quartz which is sourced from Port Hedland. The quartz is expensive, as well as not being acceptable to many members of the local community. An alternative stone has been sourced locally, which is a reddish

brown colour more in keeping with the natural environment. This treatment is also more cost effective. There is a proposal for the stone to be laid on top of a weed mat to minimise weeds growing up through the median strip. The Shire of Roebourne has a streetscaping strategy which has been developed following community consultation. Main Roads WA is to request a copy of the plan for review by HWA, and is currently discussing landscape options with the Shire of Roebourne.

Got a question about the Dampier Highway Duplication Project? Want to voice a concern or make a complaint? Contact Community Relations Officer Louise Richardson via email at dampier@hicon.com.au or by phoning 0411 141 842.

Mighty Magpies hold off fast finishing Falcons By V Swans regional development manager Clint Degebrodt

continued a great battle in the ruck through the second quarter and Preston Snook began to dominate as he and Kay linked up with Micky Ball to get the Magpies machine up and going. Outstanding defensive pressure from Ball caused a turnover that brought Riley Kay into the match, who hit Smirke’s laces out before Liam Smith took a huge pack mark and put the Maggies further in front. Things looked ominous when Ball and Jack Kay combined for a long range goal before the Falcons fortunes changed through Jesse Turner and Anthony Dunn, who then combined with Phil Khongjaroen to hit up Tyler Sharpe in front. Sharpe added a second soon after with a clever mark and goal and the Falcons turned at the half, trailing 25 to 36. The last half was played at a searing pace as the ball bounced around the

Under 18’s football returned to Bulgarra last Friday night and the crowd were treated to a high speed and hard fought match. The Magpies jumped the slow starting Falcons through some great rebounds by Jack Kay who ran hard from half back and through the midfield. Jay Berthelson was solid in the Falcons defence while his opposite fullback Jayden Saylor took relieving marks on the last line. Eustan Toby worked hard to win centre clearance and with the speed of Landon Punch and the strong hands of Marcus Smirke up front the magpies dominated the first quarter, but the scoreboard showed an inaccurate two goals, four points, to the Falcons one goal two. half back lines. Campbell Garratt started to have an influence at half back with some creative movement and Tom Price import Bailey Scott got busy at half forward for the Red and the Blue. Meanwhile the Magpies Kay brothers, Cross and Snook controlled the midfield with Saylor the master at full back. Scott dropped in an amazing shot from the boundary, which was answered by a Smith double, which kept the Magpies in front. Eventually the Magpies ran out victors, eight goals 12 points to six goals 12, after receiving a late fright from the fast finishing Falcons. Brennan Stewart served his team well in defense; Sharpe kicked three and Jordan Bruce stood tall in the Falcons loss. Ball, Cross and the Kay were solid contributors for the Magpies with Smirke and Snook dominant.

Round two of the Junior girls competition heated up with stunning performances by Kaitlin King and Rachael Canning in the ruck for their respective teams; their powerful marking and long kicking proving difficult to counter. Jordan Grutt worked tirelessly in defence repelling repeated attacks from fleet footed sister Shaylee and hard running winger Emma Ewin. The score see-sawed in front of the gathered crowd as the running attack game started to take its toll on the pinks and the green runners hit back in the second half with Siobhan Brown

No set back for Watling By Courtney Bertling The Karratha Enduro and Motocross Club held their third club round of the season last weekend. It was Jake Watling’s first race back after an injury that put him out of racing for a while. However, the break didn’t seem to set Jake back, taking out first place in the Open Feature, with David Alexander in second and Grant Eastwell in third. Newcomers to the club, Sam Perkinson, Riley Stephens and Steve Quinn did really well, since it was Sam and Riley’s first time riding and Steve’s first season in Karratha, having usually raced over east. Sam Armstrong went up a class this round, riding in the 65cc as well as his usual 50cc class. And there was a close call for first in the 50cc class between newcomer

Sam Armstrong and Mitchell Bond, but was it taken out by Mitchell. The Senior Quads were a bit interesting to watch. President Shaun Barry did really well in the first two races, coming first both times, and it looked like he was going to take out first place if he kept riding the way he did. However, it all went tumbling down when his motor gave out at the end of the second race and he had to pull out of the race, leaving John Powlton to take out first place. Don’t forget, Karratha is holding a Northwest Round on June 17 and the Karratha Challenge on July 7 and 8. The club will be giving away $1500 in cash and prizes to winners on the second day of the Karratha Challenge. And the fourth round for the season will be held on August 8. 2nd

The Green Shirt Umpire program has come to the Pilbara for the first time with the first batch of training umpires having blown the whistle at WPJFA under 11’s and 13’s matches last Sunday. The program is designed to ease young players into field umpiring within the community and the WPJFA has joined with V Swans to provide for junior umpire development and an avenue for our footballers to gain access to part time employment while staying fit and contributing to the community. “It’s a way to develop quality umpires and it would be great to see the quality of umpires continue to improve all the way up to our senior footy in the NPFL.” WPJFA President Ritchie Patching said. “And it’s great to have these young people involved in providing a safe and fun

environment for our players.” The slogan behind the Green Shirt program is, “When you see GREEN, don’t see RED”, which promotes the support of developing umpires as they learn the game. These umpires need support and training to improve, just like any player. Nineteen new umpires have joined the program so far including those that are keen to run the boundary during NPFL games. Most train at Bulgarra Oval on Monday Nights at 6.30pm to hone both their boundary technique with coach Shane Lloyd or their field technique with mentor umpires Phil Davies and Jeff Hatcher. There is always room for more males and females to get involved in footy while keeping fit and getting paid, if your keen to join in, keep an eye out for the team in green.

Triathlon ends off a great year By Courtney Bertling The Nickol Bay Triathlon Club held their Annual Wind Up on Sunday, May 20 at the Dampier Palms. The sundowner event included a ‘cross country run, cycle, run’, an awards ceremony and a sausage sizzle. The kids participated in a 1.5km cross country run, a 2.5km cycle of Dampier and a 750m run. The adults did a 1.5km cross country run, 12.4km cycle of Damiper and a 5km run. Brodie Newman took out first place for the kids, with Kyle Aleckson in second and Mitchell Greensill in third. And for the adults, Mark Smith took out first place, Jason Geike in second and Shannon Tunstead in third. “It is an end to another great year,” said president Matthew Brierley.

“The club has gone from strength to strength. “This year we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Dampier Triathlon and a cyclone cancelled one of our events. “This year, we also learnt how to successfully run a triathlon in the Dampier Harbour. “Which made the club step up a gear and people saw it as a real triathlon club.”

Fast, energetic game of hockey By Annabelle Little A small turnout for the ladies hockey competition on Wednesday night ensured a fast energetic game. The reds were strong in attack, yellow fortunate they had strength in their defence with Nicole and Daniel working hard to avert the oncoming strikes from the reds. Yellow frontline struck back repeatedly yet their shots at goals were thwarted by Alex, who did an amazing job for the first time in the goalie gear. The reds had two goals on the board before yellow was finally able to put one in the net. Final score reds up three-two. A small turnout for the men’s team as well this week but that only increased the tempo as the men had room to run and pass. Neil and Hayden switched the ball beautifully though out the

first half keeping yellow on the defensive. Yellow struck out in attack often but unable to score with the strong defence of the reds. A healthy rivalry developed between Steve from the yellows and Joe from the reds, both playing hard and tackling the ball from each other throughout the game. The younger players are gaining in their skills, Ben setting up a great goal for the yellows while Jordan was religious in marking his opponent in defence and striking out in attack when possible. The reds strength held the yellow team out in the end with the final score four-two. New players are always welcome with all equipment provided. Play for one game, one competition or the entire season. Contact Steve on 9144 4423 for further details.

The triathlon club usually takes a break in the winter due to the closure of the Karratha Aquatic Centre. “However, since we can pull off a triathlon in Dampier, we are thinking about holding a winter season,” Mr Brierley said. “A major event that happened during the year was when we got our timing system.

• The Nickol Bay Triathlon Club committee

“Vice president, Shannon Tunstead worked extremely hard for this great assest to the club and it wouldn’t have happened without him or our sponsors.” The 2011/2012 season showed a lot of commitment from the members and the committee, having about 200 people in membership numbers during the season. “The committee was extremely strong this year and we had a great influx of volunteers who helped out at all of the events,” Mr Brierley said.

Smaller Billfish: Most people have success targeting smaller billfish such as sailfish and juvenile black marlin on small skirted lures and Pilbara skipping or swimming garfish or mullet. Pilbara Cancer Cancer Live bait is also popular and can be successful Support Support ifGroup you know there are fish in the area as you cannot cover as much ground looking for fish with live bait.
