Alcohol sales to be restricted By Ben Leahy Pilbara residents who enjoy the odd tipple at home on a Sunday will have to remember to do their liquor shopping earlier in the week under new changes to the region’s liquor laws. From October 8, most Pilbara liquor stores will now be closed on Sundays and restricted to trading between 11am and 8pm from Monday to Saturday. However, hotels, taverns and clubs will still be able to sell take away alcohol for a limited number of hours on Sundays. The Director of Liquor Licensing said alarming reports from WA Police and the West Pilbara Alcohol Management Group had convinced it that tougher measures were needed to help prevent alcohol abuse. “Both reports suggested the quality of life in the Pilbara region was directly affected by significantly high rates of alcohol-related harm,” the
Director for Liquor Licensing wrote on its website.
By Tamara Binamat Three men from Geraldton were on a gold prospecting expedition near Paraburdoo when police received a call from a family member reporting the men missing. A rescue mission ensued and police found the men fit and well at their campsite near Rocklea Station. The men were reported missing last Saturday night and discovered by emergency services last Sunday. The men were reported missing by a family
The report also said that alcohol played a part in 59.4 per cent of assault offences in the Shire of Roebourne and 69.1 per cent of domestic assault cases. Professor Mike Daube from Curtin University welcomed the liquor restrictions, saying similar measures had already been beneficial in areas like Halls Creek and Fitzroy Crossing. “We are pleased to see that the West Pilbara Alcohol Management Group has identified the need for a comprehensive approach to alcohol management,” Professor Daube said. Along with liquor restrictions, this

According to the West Pilbara Alcohol Management Group’s report, per capita alcohol consumption in the region was more than double the State average and this was leading to more people being admitted to hospital with alcohol related conditions.

approach includes “alternative activities for young people, local education campaigns, community capacity building, and treatment support”, he added. However Rio Tinto, the Australian Hotels Assocation and Woolworths Liquor Group all expressed opposition to elements of the new restrictions in submissions to the Director of Liquor Licensing. Woolworths, which has liquor stores in Karratha and Wickham, wrote that “some of proposed restrictions … will have the effect of significantly inconveniencing the majority of the population, with little or no benefit in terms of the reduction of alcohol related harm”.
member, because they hadn’t advised a return time. Karratha Flying Services were contacted to prepare for an air rescue, but they weren’t needed as the men were discovered by road. An Officer from Paraburdoo Police Station said it’s a timely reminder to let someone know when you are going to be home if heading into the outback. Police said the prospectors would not have been properly equipped had they gone missing, and recommended all campers should carry a satellite phone and emergency beacon.

Circus Berserkus! Circus Berserkus is the fifth annual Exmouth Art Wear show. Art Wear is individually created works of art that are worn by a person instead of being hung on a wall or positioned for display. It is about expressing a person, idea, theme or concept through wearable art. The entries are exhibited through a narrated story set to music and lights. This year’s theme of Circus Berserkus was to encourage people to think about circus with a twist. Around 50 performers were in costume and performed to sell out audiences over two nights. The overall winner was Dome of Death by Mitchell Ferrari. The Amazing Human Cannonball by Reif Atherton won the People’s
Choice Award, and Dancing Poodle by Jarra Atherton won the category of Costume jointly made by Adult and Child. Art Wear was organised by Exmouth Cultural Arts Centre. An associated project was Tri Dance, which involved bringing two dance teachers to Exmouth for three weeks to run workshops, choreograph Art Wear and teach choreography skills to a group of young people. This was funded through the Country Arts WA/ Healthway Drug Aware Culture grants scheme. A group of teenagers led by Gemma Cutler and Sinead Coulter worked on their own dance number and entered the show as Dance Freaks. Gemma and Sinead also helped with the choreography of other parts of the show.
The Drug Aware funding helped with their dream of learning choreography and performing in a show. The team also spread the message that “drugs dash dreams” and that drug abuse affects your health and mental wellbeing and therefore stops you from enjoying activities like dancing. Christie WarehamNorfolk, Art Wear Coordinator at Exmouth Cultural Arts Centre Inc, says the show was the culmination of months of hard work by the costume makers, performers and production team.

EAST PILBARA SHIRE UPDATE Welcome to the heart of the Pilbara
October 2012
President’s Message Welcome to the first spring edition of the Shire News Update for 2012. It won’t be long now before the opening of the new road – called Iron Ore Parade - through Boomerang Oval into Newman Town Centre is ready for public use. This is a very exciting development for Newman as it will totally transform the traffic flow through the town centre and allow access through the centre much more accessible for all residents. For more information about the latest works, please keep reading this edition of the Shire’s news update. Importantly, for those who use Newman Airport please note the postponement of the commencement of parking fees for the time being. Due to technical issues, parking at Newman Airport will remain free of charge until further notice. However, the entry and exit gates are still operating at the airport and visitors are required to follow the procedure of taking a ticket on entry and returning the ticket upon exit. Your co-operation in this matter is much appreciated.

The Shire of East Pilbara Rangers are also asking dog owners to be vigilant about cleaning up dog’s droppings, particularly in dog exercise areas. Our hard working rangers have been hearing far too many reports about innocent walkers/joggers stepping in something nasty! Dog owners, please be courteous to others who use the public areas in our Shire and pick up after your dog. And do remember that dog registrations/renewals are due on November 1st.
Dog Registrations due on November 1st Iron Ore Parade – the new road through the southern end of Boomerang Oval, which connects the intersection of Kalgan and Newman Drives directly to Newman Town Centre. The new road, Iron Ore Parade is lined with tree shaded walkways and makes a striking and convenient entrance to the Town Centre. More roadside parking bays are planned as well. Iron Ore Parade will be open for public use once traffic signs are installed and street lights are operational.
Newman Tennis Courts The Newman tennis courts are now available to the public for use seven days a week without prior bookings (unless at night). However, should you require lights for night games, bookings are required. If you want to play at night there are two options: 1. Contact the Newman Tennis Association’s president Chris Abraham on 0418171686 as the club has the lights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. (the club’s contact details are on the sign in front of the courts)
I would also like to encourage you to visit the Shire’s newly redeveloped website www.eastpilbara.wa.gov.au and share your feedback with us.
2. Contact Wendy Hagan at the Shire Administration Office during office hours on 9175 8000 or email crs1@eastpilbara.wa.gov.au to obtain a booking form and organise payment.
Lynne Craigie – Shire President
Lights cost $12 per hour per court
Dog registrations and/or renewal of dog registrations are due on November 1 2012. The Western Australian Dog Act 1976 requires that all dogs over the age of three months are registered. Upon registration with the Shire you will be issued a current registration tag. The tag is to be worn by that dog at all times when in a public place. Fees for dog registration/renewal are: • Unsterilised Dogs: $30.00 for 1 year or $75.00 for 3 years • Sterilised Dogs: $10.00 for 1 year or $18.00 for 3 years For more information about dog and cat ownership in the Shire of East Pilbara, please visit our website www.eastpilbara.wa.gov.au
Postponement of the Commencement of Paid Parking at Newman Airport Due to technical issues the commencement of paid parking at the Newman Airport will not commence on Monday 17 September 2012. The successful delivery of the project was a result of the combined efforts of contractors, Worley Parsons, Lycopodium, Ninos, Metso Minerals, EC&M, Laing O’Rourke, RCR Mining Technologies, Aerison, Goodline, NRW, BEC Engineering, Kerman Contracting Calibre, McConnell Dowell and Abigroup. The train unloading process involves a rack and pinion indexer taking control of the ore cars and pushing them into the train unloader two cars at a time. The ore cars are tipped two at a time every 90 seconds, the iron ore is then dumped into an apron feeder and transported via a conveyor belt moving at 5.5 metres per second to the stackers and operating at about 12,000 tonnes per hour. Fortescue’s infrastructure at Herb Elliott Port includes some of the largest and most technologically sophisticated equipment in the world. Fortescue’s port operations comprise two key components, the inload circuits where iron ore is unloaded from trains and stockpiled, and two outload circuits where iron ore is reclaimed and, before being loaded onto ships, is verified for quality via a robotic sample station. Mr Power said Fortescue will continue to focus on delivering safe production and meeting its growth target of 115mtpa by March 2013.

Fortescue Metals Group has celebrated first ore through the company’s second train unloader in Port Hedland. The train unloader is a key component of Fortescue’s expansion of Herb Elliott Port, which will support an increase in tonnes from the Cloud Break and Christmas Creek mines and the new Solomon mine currently under construction. It’s a major milestone that will lift Fortescue’s inload capacity to 120 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). The commissioning of the train unloader follows the opening of Fortescue’s third berth and second outload circuit at the port in May. Fortescue Chief Executive Officer Nev Power said the milestone demonstrates Fortescue’s commitment to its expansion in the Pilbara. “We’re commissioning the second train unloader only a few weeks before our new ore processing facility at Christmas Creek comes on line, which will lift production capacity from the Cloud Break and Christmas Creek mines to a combined to 95mtpa,” Mr Power said. “This is a tremendous achievement for Fortescue and I am extremely proud of the employees and contractors for completing this massive construction project safely, ahead of time and under budget.” A third train unloader is expected to be commissioned before the end of this year. Both facilities were constructed in Henderson, near Fremantle, by Metso.

‘The economy of the Pilbara is just the beginning’ Students attend Pilbara Leaders Symposium By Tamara Binamat
• Michalina Milczarek and Ali Scheck from Karratha Senior High School
Barbecue shelter available for community groups The Karratha Community Association is pleased to advise that we now have a six-metre by three-metre mobile shelter available for community use. The shelter, which was donated by the Shire of Roebourne, has already been put to good use at two Sustainable September environmental events. KCA welcomes any other community organisation to also
make use of the shade at no cost. To arrange bookings please contact the KCA on kcacontact@ gmail.com.
Jonathon Pain, who has 28 years of international investment experience, presented regional Development Australia Pilbara’s impressive annual Pilbara Leaders Symposium this year. Part of the symposium was a student workshop with year 10 and 11 students from Karratha Senior High School and St Luke’s College. Pain presented his speech on the “New Reality” taking the 50 students on a journey from West to East, via the Middle East. Pain says the “New Reality” is an idea that the world is increasingly divided between those nations that are submerging, and those that are emerging. “My view is there are certain countries that accumulated too much debt over a long period of time and as a consequence of having too much debt they will spend less and save more,” he said. “I have classified those nations as submerging. They are the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy and Japan. “My message to the students of Karratha today, is that they live in arguably the most exciting time in history. “They are without doubt
the internet generation. They have access to information that previous generations could only dream about,” he said. “This is a time of extraordinary opportunity all around the world because we have such an amazing transformation taking place. “The internet and the digital age has created a level of connectivity and integration around the world we’ve never seen before in history.”
“I think these types of environments will only grow and prosper” - Jonathon Pain Pain suggests the Pilbara is not in its own economic bubble, just at the beginning or something bigger. “I don’t think it’s an economic bubble, I think what we’re seeing in these regions of Australia is just the beginning of a process of much broader urbanisation,“ he said. “I think these types of environments will only grow and prosper.” Pain hopes students will
take away and learn from the information in his talk. “I’ll hope they’ll take away, first and foremost, to work hard, they should be optimistic about the future, they should use every opportunity to read and learn more because they have no excuse, as I said they are the digital internet generation and they have every opportunity now. “They should be very excited about the world in the decades ahead.” Michalina Milczarek, a student from Karratha Senior High School, says the forum intrigued her. “I think I learnt more. He had some very interesting concepts, like the submerging and emerging countries. “I thought it was a very different way to look at things.” Ali Scheck from Karratha Senior High School said she liked Pain’s positivity during the speech. “He was very motivational rather than just saying these economies are growing and we’re going to sink, and saying that we should all band together,” she said. ”We shouldn’t act like we’re all different because we’re all on the same planet and if we helped each other catch up then we could be more harmonious.”

Living Away from Home Allowance to change in days WHAT’S COMING UP AT THE By Ben Leahy WALKINGTON AMPHITHEATRE The number of Pilbara residents qualifying for the Living Away from Home Allowance will be reduced under new rules to the scheme that are expected to take effect from this Monday October 1. The LAFHA is effectively a tax break designed to compensate an employee for the additional cost of living in a new town. But according to Dan Collins from Hedland Accounting & Finance, the shame is not that the Federal Government has tightened restrictions on who qualifies for the LAFHA, but that so few Pilbara businesses utilised it while they could. “There are a whole heap of remote area tax concessions,” Mr Collins said. “But probably by far the most under utilised one in Hedland – and probably Karratha – is the Living Away From Home Allowance. “It wouldn’t even be five per cent of the employers in Hedland that utilised the allowance properly in the past. Under previous LAFHA rules, employers could give their employees an allowance based on the extra cost of living in their new town. So if a new employee had previously payed $1,000 a week in rent in Perth but was now paying $3,000 a week in Hedland or Karratha, for example, then the employer could pay the $2,000 difference to the employee tax-free. The employee was then free to rent out their property in Perth or terminate the lease.
But under new LAFHA rules, employees can no longer rent out or terminate the lease on their original property, but will have to instead maintain it for their personal use in addition to the house they rent in their new location. These new LAFHA rules will best suit fly-in, fly out workers in the Pilbara, according to Hedland Accounting & Finance’s Mr Collins.
But with so few Pilbara businesses utilising LAFHA anyway, Mr Collins said the new changes are mostly meeting opposition elsewhere in the country. “You don’t have to live in a remote town to qualify for LAFHA,” Mr Collins said. “So it has more been businesses transferring staff from Sydney to Melbourne and vice-versa who have been using LAFHA. “And the main reason that LAFHA got tweaked is because its cost to the government has gone up about 10 times in the last three or four years.”

ATO cracks down on the cash economy businesses would be identified by the ATO as being more likely to be under declaring cash sales. The ATO also expects that the data will identify businesses that are not currently registered for income tax and/or GST. Mr Paterson says “for businesses who are doing the right thing and reporting cash sales correctly, there is nothing to fear from this review and it is likely that you will not be contacted as part of this ATO review program. If you are contacted by the ATO you should seek the assistance of your accountant to help you deal with the review. Prompt responses are often the best course of action.” Chris Paterson and Mark de Luca, Principals at Crowe Horwath, are regular visitors to the Pilbara region and have many clients who operate throughout the North West.

The Small Business Centre often gets enquiries from small business startups and existing businesses asking if it’s okay to take cash payments for services. Not declaring cash payments is a big “no no” tax wise. From cafes to tradesmen to builders to restaurants and bars, the ATO is out to crack down on the cash economy and is using technology and “industry benchmarks” to do it. Chris Paterson, Principal at Accountants Crowe Horwath says “If your business is understating sales, either on an income tax return or on your BAS, the ATO can use industry benchmarks to catch you out”. As part of the most recent industry to be targeted, the ATO has announced that it has obtained information from seven different wholesale coffee suppliers covering the most popular coffee brands used within the café, restaurant and hospitality industries. The ATO will use this data and industry benchmarks (or averages) to calculate the amount of coffee that should be sold in a given period by the café or restaurant, and thus the amount of income and profit margins that should be reported on activity statements and annual income tax returns. Where the revenue or margins are lower than what the industry benchmark and coffee bean purchases would indicate they should be, these

Mr Collins said that any Pilbara residents, who were receiving a LAFHA before the changes were proposed in the last budget in May, can still continue to receive their existing allowance until July 2014. But he also added that there were many more remote area tax concessions beyond LAFHA that local businesses should be looking to use to help cover the high cost of living in the Pilbara.

Throughout the month of September more than 200 families took part in the Pilbara Families Building Pilbara Communities program. Supported by BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s Community Grants Program, not for profit group Ngala held a series of workshops for parents and community groups in Newman and Hedland to provide networking opportunities and share knowledge about parenting. Ngala Pilbara Officer Stephen Gallagher said the project provided

of initiatives and events supported through the quarterly Community Grants funding round.
“The funding from BHP Billiton’s Community Grants program, together with support from Population and Community Health, has enabled Ngala to deliver this program in the Pilbara region.
“We are pleased our Community Grants Program can boost access to family support services in the Pilbara by supporting Ngala’s - Pilbara Families Building Pilbara Communities program,” Mr Cottier said.
“This proved very beneficial for families and parents living in Hedland, Newman and surrounding remote communities who have limited access to these kinds of services,” Mr Gallagher said.
“BHP Billiton’s Community Grants funding helps local community groups, sporting clubs and not-for-profit organisations deliver programs, hold local events and improve community facilities and equipment.

Dampier primary students experience life at Rio Tinto By Anna Pianta On September 19, Dampier Primary School students toured Rio Tinto’s sites at Parker Point and East Intercourse Island. The excursion coincided with the students’ studies about natural resources and the local history of Dampier. Conducted by Anna at Karratha Visitor’s Centre, students were able to see facilities that they had only ever heard about.
On board the Rio Tinto bus, organised to accommodate the classes, students viewed an old car dumper and were amazed at the size and expanse of the ports. Even a humble water truck sent cameras clicking and students all giggled about Spaghetti Junction’s name! They marvelled at stackers and reclaimers in action from Rolfe’s Rest at Parker Point and were able to see ships being loaded at close range. After climbing the hill at Queen’s Lookout, the classes were rewarded with a cool breeze and an impressive view. The idea of automation fascinated students and they were fortunate to see tugs take off for their next job. One student was lucky enough to see his Dad driving past!

In the event that the inspectors find any wiring or electrical connections that do not comply with safety standards, Horizon Power is required by law to disconnect power to the affected circuits. The customer is required to contact a licensed electrician to rectify the fault and reconnect power. In some cases, the fault may be rectified on the spot if it is isolated to a faulty appliance. The cost of repairing the fault and reconnection is the responsibility of the property owner.

Everyone loves a great footy match, except the people who are outside gardening, swimming, doing needlework or reading 50 Shades of Grey. I’m with the latter mob, but refuse to reveal which one on the list I chose for AFL grand final day (nor which book in the trilogy I am reading by the pool with my tapestry and palm trees).
The Victory Birds Someone from Sydney? Oh. Someone from Hawthorn? Gosh. I love it down in Hawthorn; the shopping’s rather posh.
So who won with the footy? We’re talking AFL? Of course we are (I’m joking. As if you couldn’t tell.)
But really, they’re both sort of birds and one, I’m sure, won out. The one with brighter jumpers, better knee high socks and clout.
And Sydney’s really cool. They have a lot of stores and when you’re down at Bondi, cool oozes out your pores.
So who won with the footy? I see. They did. I see. T’would seem I’m the only one who didn’t watch the game – not me.
I see. Aha. OK. They won. I thought those birds would nail it. It’s great they kicked the winning goal and didn’t go and fail it.
What did you say, the footy? The footy? Has it started? Uh huh. I see. I’m out of whack. It’s done, dusted, departed.
Are Sydney called the Ducks? Are Hawthorn also chickens? Hang on, don’t punch my lights out now! Or I’ll be lickety splitt’n.
So heartfelt deep congratulations to the team that one. Another year is on its rear. Now cricket…pleeease, come on!

• Blasting a drum solo inside Roebourne Prison
Prisoners at Roebourne Regional Prison have been taking Elvis Presley’s lyrics to heart. Not only did they hold their own gig inside the prison on Monday September 24, but they also launched two debut albums. “All the Time in the World” was composed by 10 Roebourne prisoners and features nine tracks of original music, while “They Disappear” is the solo album by a fellow inmate. The prisoners had been refining their musical skills at works shops run inside the prison since 2010 by Dudley Billing and Cho Cleary from community group Big hART.
Roebourne Regional Prison Superintendent Brian Wilson said the prisoners had struck a chord with the Big hART duo. “The steady and enthusiastic input from Big hART staff has seen amateur musicians and singers, develop their skills to a whole new level, to the point where they are now able to achieve recognition beyond their backyard,” Superintendent Wilson said. “Indeed interest from local radio stations has resulted in some of their music being played on air and at some local formal functions.” With a reception like that, the inmates might soon be rocking more than just the whole cell block.

Karratha’s Yaburara Trail set for upgrade By Ben Leahy
• Spike, Peter Pope, young Samuel and Kelly Howlett
$100,000 and counting raised for Starlight By Ben Leahy If anything, Dampier-based construction worker Guy Bache is working harder to raise money for sick kids than when we first ran into him three weeks ago. Bache, who is better known by his nickname Spike, has already held a number of fundraising drives for the Starlight Foundation, and on Sunday September 23 we found him holding yet another barbie out the front of Karratha’s Harvey Norman. The barbie raised $3,500 for Starlight, which uses the proceeds to help grant special wishes to sick and dying kids, including gifting them iPads to email and chat with their friends, or once-in-a-lifetime trips to Disneyland.
Spike began raising money for Starlight earlier this year, and after suggesting that fellow members of his Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union also pitch in, approximately $100,000 in total has been donated to the Foundation. Town of Port Hedland Mayor Kelly Howlett and her partner Peter Pope have also taken note of Spike’s efforts, popping in for a visit during his latest barbecue. And Spike and his CFMEU buddies are not finished yet. They are planning future raffles and even taking their barbie outside some of Karratha’s popular nightspots so hungry clubbers can get a feed while also helping out Starlight.
Karratha’s Yaburara Heritage Trail steering committee is aiming to improve the walkways, signage and facilities on the much-loved track by the end of this year. The 3.5 kilometre-long trail, created in 1988, traces the impact of European settlement since the 1860s and passes through a number of Aboriginal heritage sites, including rock engravings and artifact scatters. But after 24 years of wear and tear, it is in need of modifications and repair work, according to experienced trail-designer Mike Maher. “In those 24 years, there has been a lot of degradation of the trail, from the weather, from people driving 4WDs and from people riding trail bikes on the trail,” Maher said. Using his experience as a trail developer, who has submitted 150 trail reports over the past 17 years, Maher walked the Yaburara Trail, also known as the Jaburara Trail, and prepared a list of recommendations.
These included creating loop tracks off the main trail so that walkers are not stranded without transport after completing the 3.5 kilometre walk between the Visitors Centre and Karratha Library. He also suggests adding more signage, chairs and tables along the trail and improving the path in certain areas, by building stone steps on steeps ascents and descents for example. If the Yaburara steering committee accepts Maher’s recommendations, the next step will be to secure funding with the overall aim being to complete the project by year’s end. Maher said the project, which was a partnership between the National Trust, Shire of Roebourne and other community organisations, was an important one because locals clearly loved the trail. He said, this was evidenced by the fact that the Yaburara trail is one of the few tracks still maintained out of the 170 trails that were created across the State for Australia’s 1988 Bicentennial year.
• The view over Karratha from Dampier Salt Shakers Lookout - Photo by Ben Leahy “It gets a lot of use and what surprised me is the number of people early in the morning or late in the afternoon who were walking it or jogging it or taking their dogs for a walk,” Maher said He also said the beautiful landscapes and rich heritage of
the trail marked it out as a special track. “Down in the valleys, you do get a sense of isolation and a sense of what it might have been like tensof-thousands of years ago when Aboriginal people might have travelled through that area,” Maher said.

As well as showcasing the hospital’s services, locals also met with health and community services providers, such as Pilbara Population Health, Pilbara Mental Health and Drug Service, Pilbara Health Network and Mawarnkarra Health Service. • Chiropractors are working to help Australians improve their spinal health
Chiropractic is a health care discipline based on the scientific premise that the body is a self-regulating, selfhealing organism. These important functions are controlled by the brain, spinal cord, and all the nerves of the body. “Chiropractic” comes from the Greek word Chiropraktikos, meaning, “done by hand.” The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine, and pelvis) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health. The skull protects the delicate tissues of the brain. The moving bones of the spine protect the intricate communication pathways of the spinal cord and nerve roots.

Angel of Cuisine Every new path in life involves a start point. It’s a pin on the map of where you want to go, or a scribble on a piece of paper stuck on the fridge. Without a start point, it’s just an idea; there cannot be a beginning without action. When I first started to tackle my weight loss, all the information about how to do it just seemed so daunting. I would get confused about what to eat, what exercise to do, when to exercise, and that combined with all the other everyday things I had to worry about just added up to quitting before I even started. One day, I wrote down five things I wanted to achieve for myself and could control in my present life situation and I thought about how to start ticking them off. I don’t know what I know about food or weight loss by going to school or studying anyone or anything. I know a lot, and know how to apply it correctly because I learnt.
NOW OPE N
I researched what would be right for me and I tried it, if it didn’t work I tried some more. I spent the first few weeks concentrating more on my food intake and what I was eating instead of what exercise I needed to do. I ate well and then instead of having tea and biscuits in front of the TV late at night I had fruit and sat on my computer determined to learn how to look after myself.

Healthy Tips and Tricks
500grm Butternut pumpkin
Enjoying new food is not always easy when you are trying to change your tastes.
500grm medium red capsicum 1 Bunch of asparagus
Not every piece of weight loss advice out there applies to everyone, so you have to try and see what works for you.
½ tbs reduced fat French dressing
Research is action, perhaps the most pivotal action you can take when you are taking on a new healthy lifestyle.
Preheat Oven to 200 degrees. Slice pumpkin and capsicum into small even size pieces. Spray with olive oil spray and roast on baking paper in oven for 15 minutes, being careful that vegetables don’t burn or caramelize too quickly. Add the asparagus for the last 5 minutes of baking, it wont need much time.
Get thinking about what you need to do for yourself this week, write it on a piece of paper, stick it to the fridge and create yourself a starting point.
13
½ tbs reduced fat mayonaise Small handful of dried cranberries and chopped nuts
Remove from oven and rest until vegetables are cool enough to eat. Toss in a bowl with dressings, cranberries and nuts and enjoy warm.
Have a healthy week!
There is a lot of great produce becoming available to us now so perhaps it’s time to experiment. I could spend hours giving advice about how to cook each and every vegetable to get your family to eat it, and maybe in time I will, but for now, treat yourself
to a new cookbook and expand your horizons. We have some great thrift stores that are full of books. You don’t have to spend big money to find inspiration. It doesn’t matter if it’s an older book or has been someone’s inspiration before, what matters is that it makes you think about food differently and gets you experimental in the kitchen.

echonews echo news By Jennifer Fox The warm weather is here and that means so are the snakes and lizards, which are becoming active again. I’ve already heard tales of people finding snakes in houses or yards this season. Sharing our backyards with snakes, spiders and scorpions is a hazard we all have to live with in Australia. Snakes do not seek confrontation; they are merely going about their daily business which often brings them in contact with humans. While it can give you a fright to come across a snake in your house, try to remember that most humans are bitten when accidentally stepping on snakes or trying to kill them. While not all snakes are venomous, you should treat them all as if they are, to minimise the risk of being bitten. There are instances where a person thought a snake was not venomous only to find out the hard way that the opposite was true. If you do encounter a snake in your property the best thing to do is try not to over react. By doing this you don’t agitate the snake and you will be able to keep an eye on where it has gone.

There is nothing worse than knowing a snake is in your house, but not knowing exactly where it is. I’ve had that happen to me. I had a 2-foot gwadar slither across my kitchen floor and disappear under the fridge. I was shocked. I don’t mind them outside, but seeing one actually in my house was a spin out. By the time I recovered my senses, the snake had slithered out from under the fridge and could no longer be found. In the end, we had to open every door and hope the snake eventually found its own way out. That night while in bed my mind was racing I can tell you. You can lower the risk of coming into contact with snakes by removing rubbish such as sheeting from your yard and keeping your grass cut short. Snakes prefer features like fishponds, where they come to hunt animals like frogs and lizards that enjoy the water. Our neighbours had this problem until they filled their pond in. Another friend in Dampier has an aviary and he is always getting snakes coming in for the mice that eat the birdseed. Also remember to keep the number

Snake Safety Tips To help keep you and our Pilbara snakes out of each other’s way, we’ve compiled a list of snake safety tips with the help of Colin Roe from the Pilbara Wildlife Carer’s Association and the Town of Port Hedland. TIP 1: Keep your yards clean and clear Snakes will shelter in long grass or under ground cover, so remove any rubbish such as corrugated metal sheeting. A clean yard also helps protect your pets.
one
TIP 3: Wear long trousers and enclosed footwear when bushwalking Also avoid long grass and undergrowth when possible
TIP 2: Be careful if you have an aviary or fishpond Snakes will hunt the mice or rats that feed on birdseed as well as the frogs and lizards that congregate near water features.
two
TIP 4: Call a registered snake catcher Do not try to capture a snake by yourself. Instead, keep an eye on its location and phone a snake catcher who will relocate the snake to a safe area.

TIP 5: Be careful of the king brown and western brown The king brown or mulga snake and the western brown or gwardar snake are the most common highly venomous snakes in the Pilbara. Be extra careful around these snakes.

Parklife Roadtrip Comic stars on the sets fi re to Pilbara bigscreen at Roebourne NEOMAD on the big screen
By Ben Leahy While the rest of the world might be obsessed with blockbuster Hollywood movies starring comic heroes, like Iron Man and Thor, Roebourne residents are more interested in their own homegrown comic stars. A healthy turnout of Roebourne locals brought their foldout chairs and children to the town’s oval on Wednesday September 26 for the premiere screening of the first episode of interactive iPad comic NEOMAD. A sci-fi adventure featuring real life characters from the Roebourne community, NEOMAD is about a group of boys, known as the Love Punks. The comic follows the Love Punks as they attempt to solve the mysterious origins of a space rocket carved with petroglyphs that falls from the sky.
Stu Campbell, an artist who worked with the Roebourne boys to create NEOMAD as part of community group Big hART’s project to help locals preserve their culture, said the comic was a hit in in the town. “All the kids in the community pretty much know the first comic word-for-word now, which is pretty exciting,” Campbell told the Pilbara Echo last week. He also joked that some of the boys who star in NEOMAD, such as Nathaniel Edwins and Maverick Eaton, are even getting a little carried away with their new reputations as comic superheroes. “Nathaniel and Maverick think they are awesome. We have really had to pull their egos in a bit,” Campbell said. If the Love Punks story ever makes it to big screens around the world, Campbell might really have his hands full. NEOMAD is available for $2.99 on iTunes. For more information visit www.neomadcomic.com.

Parklife veteran, Micah, supported by DJs Panda, Damian John, Hanky and Flowers, road tripped through the Pilbara last weekend to bring the dance music festival to the north. Micah said that both Karratha and Port Hedland always deliver and has never had a bad experience in either town. “They don’t hold back, they really get into the spirit of the music,” he said. “Everyone is really aware of what music is in at the moment.” The Parklife Roadtrip played at the Evolution Nightclub on Friday night and at the Pier Hotel on Saturday night.

With sword swallowing, steeljawed dingo traps and electrocution via nipple piercings, it wasn’t a performance for the faint of heart. But among those who did brave the League of Sideshow Superstars during their three-day residence at the Spiegeltent in Karratha last weekend, nearly all walked away with a smile. Sideshow Superstars’ MC Shep Huntly was largely responsible for the fun, keeping the energy high and the crowd revved up in between stints shocking onlookers by hooking his nipples up to a tractor battery and thrusting his arm into a dingo trap. Earlier in the night, fellow performer Gordo cleared out his digestive tract during a sword swallowing performance, while Sideshow Pat poked his tongue into a mousetrap. Female artist Lilokoi Chaos brought sexy oomph to the show with a hoola hoop routine before wriggling free from a straight jacket. If the routines were not all groundbreaking, the crowd didn’t mind, giving all the performers rousing rounds of applause. Meaning that for three-nights, these superstars from the sideshow arenas really did take over Karratha’s main stage.

Pilbara women bump and grind with Scarlet O’Harlot and Ruby Slippers Through the huge wooden door of the 100-year-old performance tent, I had my first glimpse of a room full of ladies from Karratha, and two burlesque performers, “bumping and grinding” in the 30-degree heat. It was everything I imagined a burlesque workshop to be, except as I sat alone at the back of the tent, I saw something I don’t often see from the ladies of this tough, barren mining town. Women, some old, some young, some dancers, some cleaners, were moving in a way that screamed ‘confidence!’ like they were hypnotised by the art of burlesque. Miss Burlesque WA winner Ruby Slippers, Scarlet O’Harlot and friends from Sugar Blue Bulesque in Perth were brought to Karratha as part of the Fringe on the Road tour for the Red Earth Arts Festival. Instructor of the sold out Bump and Grind workshop, Scarlet O’Harlot, said the response from women in the Pilbara was overwhelming.
“It went fantastically well, the girls were really confident and seemed to really enjoy it,” she said. “It’s great to teach women how to move their bodies, and give them a bit more confidence that way.” As the women shimmied, jiggled, and strutted around the Spiegeltent (Dutch for ‘mirror tent’) it was evident our town might be home to the next big thing in burlesque. “There were some fantastic bottoms!” purred Ruby Slippers, who performed at the Spiegeltent in the late hours of the weekend. Scarlet agreed, noticing fantastic movers in the workshop. “They worked really well, and some them have a real natural body movement and a real natural charisma, which works well on the stage,” she said. Both Scarlet and Ruby hope the ladies of Karratha will take home a swagger of confidence. “Love what you’ve got, “ said Ruby “Work with it because there’s no use wishing for something you don’t have. “Embrace what you’ve got and just power with it.”

By Tamara Binamat The Sounds Outback Festival is arriving, for the first time, in Exmouth next weekend to transform the coastal town into a cultural, musical and revolutionary arts festival. The Sounds Outback (...to Reef) Festival by Tura new Music is an experience any one with the slightest interest in arts will be overwhelmed by. From intimate camp outs with musicians to artistic exhibitions for hundreds of festivalgoers, there is something to delight anyone. The festival has been running since 2001 at Wogarno Station near Mt Magnet, the original concept was to take music lovers and artists out into an Australian landscape they wouldn’t normally get to and experience new music in intense, new environments. The festival is about changing the context in which people experience new music and although it might be music you could experience in any concert hall, Artistic Director Tos Mahoney says putting the music in an outback environment changes the way we hear music. “The reaction has always been a positive one, there is a sense of journey and community between people heading to an outback situation,” he said. “Being there together is an exhilarating experience, but then to have world class musicians presenting work in that environment really makes it very unique and a memorable experience for everyone.” Mahoney said across the festival weekend there would be seven different performance events and 1,500 festival-goers. The special opening night will be at Niblett
Oval in town and will be a free concert with samplers of events to come. There are three components to Sounds Outback. The community residency, from October 3-5 is led by leading Australian composer, violinist Jon Rose and based around his world-renowned bowed fence work. Rose has developed an art form around bowing, using a violin bow to play fences. He has recorded on thousands of miles of Australian fences, in Exmouth a fence has been built around Niblett Oval to Rose’s specifications to creates different sounds, tones and pitches so the fence becomes an instrument. Community members will have the chance to attend workshops with Rose to learn how to play this instrument. The resulting works will be played at the festival opening, Friday October 5. The second part of the Sounds Outback festival is all about the concert series and associated events. Mahoney says these are events that will “wow” guests. “Tura always holds the notion of being eclectic and presenting a broad range of music is core to what we believe in,” he said. “Jon as a violinist is part of the performance program, as is Etica Ensemble. “Etica is a new music chamber from Perth with some of our best instrumentalists, and I don’t say that loosely. “They play in orchestras around the world and have created an ensemble to present Australian chamber music,” he said. “Mr Steve Pigram from The Pigram Brothers, a renowned singer, songwriter from Broome, is singing his well known works and will be joined by some of the other artists for some special renditions and versions of his
songs.” “Then there’s Defying Gravity, the percussion ensemble at WAAPA (West Australian Acedemy of Performing Arts). “Every time they are an amazing knockout. “They’ll be presenting a whole range of percussion works in the various settings,” Mahoney revealed. “Up from Carnarvon we’ll have a fantastic dance based performance group, a contemporary Indigenous dance group,” he said. “They work with a didgeridoo player from Shark bay, Darren Capewell.” The third component to the festival is an intimate concert like no other. For those who want to extend their experience of Sounds Outback there is an opportunity to join a campout at Bullara Station at the bottom of the Gulf. “It has some amazing geographical and geological features,” said Mohoney. “We all head down there on the Monday the 8th of October, just for the one night with the cast and crew and audiences. “We’ll head down there overnight with some evening performances, very unplugged. “There is incredible red sand dunes not too far from the homestead with a natural amphitheatre where one of the performances will be on Monday night. “There will be campfire presentations and a performance in the shearing shed, finishing up with the last event of the whole experience which will be a picnic performance on a dry creek bed on Bullara Station.” Tura New Music plan to make the Sounds Outback festival an annual event in and around Exmouth, with plans already underway for next years series.

Fortescue's CEO Nev Power said the award of the contract is a "key milestone in our expansion to 115 mtpa by the end of the March quarter 2013. "This follows the commissioning of the second train unloader at Herb Elliot Port last week." Craig Laslett, MD of Leighton Contractors, said this "is underpinned by our expertise in iron ore, in which we have mined and processed approximately 500 million tonnes over the last five years. "This contract also provides the opportunity to improve efficiencies through the introduction of the latest technology in the mining industry". Laslett added that the contract included a commitment to use graduates of Fortescue's indigenous training and employment program VTEC. Around 600 workers will initially be employed at the site. Smart invoicing tips to improve cash flow
Leighton wins billion dollar Pilbara mining contract In a reverse of the current trend, Leighton Contractors has been awarded a $1.5 billion, full service contract in the Pilbara. The award sees the company providing mining services at Fortescue’s Firetail iron ore deposit. According to Leighton, its mining division will provide all mine management at the site, including operating and maintaining the open cut mining fleet, ore handling plants, and associated infrastructure. It will add the miner in producing around 20 million tonnes of iron ore per annum from Firetail, which forms part of the wider Solomon Hub. Hamish Tyrwhitt, Leighton Holding's CEO, said the contract is evidence of the group's ability to deliver long-term sustainable growth. "Leighton Contractors has worked with Fortescue to negotiate a winwin outcome whereby they provide the bulk of the capital to purchase the mining plant and equipment, and we bring our core competency of

Top students explore global economic landscape Bright Year 10-12 students from Karratha Senior High School and St Luke’s College were given an opportunity to ponder where the world is heading, when international investment expert Jonathan Pain visited Karratha for the Regional Development Australia Pilbara annual Pilbara Leaders Symposium this month. Jonathan shared with students his story “the new reality”, a journey around the world examining the global economic landscape. In particular he highlighted the changes in emerging Asian nations, such as Indonesia, Vietnam and Singapore, and the importance of these
changes for Australia’s economic future. Jonathan urged the students – who he called the “Internet generation” – to look beyond media headlines and rethink the way they view the world. The interactive workshop enabled the students to demonstrate their keen critical thinking skills, impressing Jonathan with well thought-out questions. The engaging discussion covered a range of topics from the impact of technology on connectivity and commerce, to globalisation and how nations “submerged” in debt can work to recover their economies. Year 10 student Max Watkins, from St Luke’s College, said, “It was really interesting to hear how countries rely on each other to learn how the economics of the world
works”. Fellow St. Luke’s student Maddison Wright said the presentation was informative and relevant to the subjects being studied at school. Jonathan concluded with an optimistic economic outlook for Australia, the nation he calls the “Lucky Country”. He believes we have the best of being both an advanced and developing country. We also have more beach per person than any other country in the world! The 2012 Pilbara Leaders Symposium involved key representatives from government, resource industries, local businesses and not-for-profit organisations who participated in a business breakfast hosted in partnership with the Shire of Roebourne, a workshop and an evening dinner event. 19 K

State Softball Team Try-Out Tournament By Bob Neville Our very excited Port Hedland Junior Development girls travelled to Perth on Friday September 21 to participate in the 2012 WA State Team Try-Out Tournament. The 14 girls performed above their wildest expectations and were the highlight of the weekend for all that organised and attended the event. The girls were put into three teams to allow them the opportunity to play alongside more experienced and seasoned players. The “Port Hedland” team was made up of nine Port Hedland girls, and Jemma Freegard (WA Flames and Australia U19 team member), Leigh Godfrey (WA Flames team member and Australian Vice Captain) and they also had assistance with pitching from

Lisa Buswell (WA Flames) for a couple of games. The Port Hedland team was coached by Jodie Stevenson (WA Flames and Australian team member) and Ashleigh Medwin (WA Flames team member). The tournament started Friday night, with the games being played through the wild weather, with gale force winds, rain and very low temperatures. The girls really felt the cold and were not enjoying the conditions, but they soldiered on and put in a great effort. The Port Hedland team dominated the competition along with the Carine Cats and Joondalup Jaguars, but the girls lost a couple of games on the second day, ending up in third spot on the ladder, and played against Rockingham in the final and had a win to secure them third place overall for the tournament. North West softball champs By Claire Moran This weekend sees the Karratha Softball Association heading to Carnarvon to take place in the womens 37th North West Championship alongside Port Hedland, Paraburdoo, Dampier, Wickham, Tom Price and host town Carnarvon.
the trophy – Kyla Thomas, Nikki Brough, Jo Smythe, Jo Leo, Kalisa Storey, Charmaine Joseph, Mereana Joseph, Mo Waru, Claire Moran, Tracey Hunter and Narelle Walton.
This year the competition also saw invitations go out to Geraldton and Dongara who have gladly accepted and will be taking part in hopefully the first of many games.
Karratha Softball Association would like to take this opportunity to thank their Gold Sponsors Savannah Engineering (WA) Pty Ltd and Toll Energy for all their support and assistance throughout the season; this trip would not be possible without their backing.
With Karratha taking home the shield last year after beating Port Hedland, the pressure is on again to do well this year and they are hoping the following team will be able to bring home
Best of luck to all teams involved, we have no doubt that it will be a very exhilarating weekend of softball and a very enjoyable couple of days with the North West softball congregation.

Inclusion WA put wheels to good use By Joan Foley Hedland Community Association
Living
A total of 10 basketball wheelchairs valued at $8,900 have been made available to basketballers in the Pilbara after Hedland Community Living Association lobbied small amounts from Masonic Lodge, Macdonalds, Ric Hockey, Port Authority, NWTelegraph, IBN Indigenous Corporation and Debaire Fashion. The chairs were used over the 2011 Inclusion Festival week and are now housed at Pundulmurra Campus Gym in Parker Street, South Hedland.
This year they were again used throughout the Inclusion Festival. In the lead up, Anika Coppin Foley has set up a regular game with plans to develop a wheelchair basketball league looking at competition between rural towns and eventually have it included as part of Country week competitions. Anika was inspired to run this sport as she enjoyed the game immensely whilst at boarding school two years ago. She played with some of the members of our successful London Games team over the four years she was there. Anyone interested in joining in and keeping their fitness up over the summer months in the cool indoors are
invited to join in. Games are held Thursday afternoons from 5:30. Follow the entrance and head to the right when facing the admin block and follow the path around behind the buildings. It is not a requirement to have a disability. The idea is inclusion and raising awareness. There is also a great opportunity for corporate team building while supporting a young lady wanting to move forward in the world. For more information Call Anika on 0487423911.

Karratha Teeball heads to Tom Price for North West Championships By Camerin Coles Karratha showcased their exemplary teeball skills on Sunday afternoon at the North West Championships in Tom Price. Nikki Brough, Jo Leo, Camerin Coles, Emma Coles, Matt Bushby and Dale Hawley, along with their support team of parents, escorted 37 kids on the arduous seven-hours bitumen trip to Tom Price. Along with the Paraburdoo, Newman and Wickham teams, the Karratha team competed in five games across two days. With an extremely talent-rich crowd of kids our teams showed why teeball has been an integral part of Karratha’s sporting calendar for many years. The Karratha/Dampier Teeball Association and the North West
teams would very much like to thank McLaren Hire for the donation of the bus and the Shire of Roebourne for the petrol to get us there and back. Without your continued support these trips could not happen. The association would also like to thank the coaches and parents that helped on the weekend. Teeball is all about fun and participation and without you people teeball could not be as great. With next year’s games being hosted in Hedland we look forward to having many kids available for tryouts, it is a fantastic weekend and fun is had by kids and parents alike. Wickham won the Juniors category, Hedland won Inters and Seniors was won by Wickham.

Hedland farewells Gonzalez Family By Jan Gillingham After eight and a half years in town, the Gonzalez family, Jay Jay, Julia, and children Emilio, Mariah and Antonio have moved on to more tropical surroundings. Jay Jay and Julia, both professional dancers and choreographers, and Jay Jay, also a respected Taekwondo martial artist, moved to Hedland in 2004 through Jay Jay’s position with the WA Police Service. Wanting to share their talents and skills with the local community they began classes in both taekwondo and dance at the then named YMCA at the JD Hardie Centre. Jay Jay, also an Army Reservist, transferred into the Pilbara Regiments 1 Squadron D Troop, where regular training, weekend patrols and community call outs with the ADF, made for a busy lifestyle. “Our life here has been very busy, but very fulfilling and rewarding,” said Jay Jay. “Our children have practically grown up here, they were only toddlers when we arrived, now in their pre-teens, both Julia and I are so happy all three have joined in with what we both love to do and are now old enough to share what we’ve taught them to others.”

With the opportunity to enhance some of the local children through the art of Taekwondo
or build confidence through song and dance, the Gonzalez family thanks all the children and families who have supported them over the years. “We have met a lot of wonderful people here, most of whom are like family to us,” commented Julia. “We will miss them all terribly but hope they will be able to visit us in our new home in Hawaii.” At the recent Pilbara Music Festival, Mariah Gonzalez was awarded a Gold Award and the 3G’s won an encouragement award. Mayor Kelly Howlett also presented the family with a Town of Port Hedland Community Award for their services. I will miss the family very much as it has been a pleasure to teach all three children their music – piano, vocal, recorder, and guitar and to see them excel in everything they have done. They will be missed a great deal and I know that the 3G’s, and especially Mariah, will be in the big picture of music and entertainment in the years ahead, and we can proudly say that they started their musical career in the Pilbara at Port Hedland.

Karratha takes out the BMX North West Championships Karratha BMX riders travelled to Tom Price last weekend to compete in the final round of the Lubritene BMX North West Championship. The Tom Price BMX track was well prepared and ready for the 65 Karratha riders to race on over the weekend. The fantastic riding at the Karratha and Port Hedland rounds of the Lubritene BMX North West Championship meant all age groups were very close. If you raced well at Tom Price, you would win the championship. There were 29 Crawford Realty Sprockets, three to seven year olds, who raced around the track like true professional riders. They were speeding out of the gate and racing all the way to the finish line. All Sprockets showed great sportsmanship by shaking hands at the end of the race with big smiles. The Pro Open Mens racing
over the three rounds was a hard fought battle.

13 Pro men competed in Tom Price with Joey Graham from Hills BMX Club in Perth winning the series.
With seven riders competing, Macie came in second with a three round total of 720 points.
Karratha rider Corey Davis came second. Some hard and fantastic racing in the 11 year old boys class; after three rounds of racing it came down to the final race in the final round to determine the North West Champion. Karratha BMX Club took out the top three spots. Cruz Musitano won the final in Tom Price with a three round total of 742 points to get in front of Dylan Bennetts in second place at 738 points. Riley Hinchcliffe made third place at 704 points. Macie Bennetts was another stand out Karratha rider in the North West Championships. She competed in the 13-year-old
Tom Price rider Leon Nieuwburg took out first place with 722 points for the three rounds. Karratha BMX riders took out top place in six classes out of 18. Over the three rounds we had 184 riders compete. Nine riders from Perth and nine riders from Geraldton made their way to each round of the North West Championship.

This is great support for our fantastic local competition. The BMX North West Championships is a great competition held at three great tracks in the Pilbara. I would like to thank all the volunteers who prepare the track and run each event.

Pilbara’s finest basketball tournament An exciting school holiday event, Pilbara’s Finest Basketball Tournament, is finally only days away. Planning for this event has been underway for the past six weeks, with a group of young people meeting each week. The young people have worked hard, brainstorming their ideas, developing a flyer, and planning this incredible event with a little guidance from workers at the Department of Sport and Recreation, Department of Corrective Services - Youth Justice Services, Yaandina Youth Service and Garnduwa. By actively taking part in the planning and development of this event, a number of young people with Juvenile Justice Team involvement have been able to meet their JJT action plan requirements including reducing their voluntary work hours. Meanwhile they have been given a fantastic opportunity to develop their skills in the area of events planning and management. The young people have worked hard on

The Tour De Panna By Eilish McNulty and Blathanid Ward Pannawonica Health and Wellness Coordinators A huge congratulation to all those who participated in the first ever Tour De Panna charity bike ride on Saturday September 22. It was a nice and early 5am start for the 18 eager cyclists taking on the challenge of a 46 kilometre bike ride back to town. With coffees in hand and high visibility camel packs on their backs they loaded their bikes onto the truck, then all that was left to do was jump on the ISS bus out to the west coastal highway and cycle back into town.
With a final tune up of their bikes and some pre race photos they were off. Cyclists were treated to some stunning Pilbara scenery on the way back to town. This was a welcome distraction from the strong head wind and endless hills ahead. The first water and snack station was at the 30 kilometre marker just before the Panna Boot Tree. After some jellies and watermelon it was back to the road again. All cyclists had great support from our safety vehicles volunteers who were busy pumping up tyres and cheering them on. The next water station was at the 15 kilometre marker and
this was the point when legs and bums started to ache.
safely vehicle volunteers Ali West and Ben Hughes.
It did however mark the last third of the journey and with thoughts of food and drinks at the finish line our hard-core participants pushed on for the final leg of the ride.
The event would not have been possible without your assistance.
Everyone finished at the sports club with a smile on their face, relieved to have completed the challenge and delighted with their efforts.
Thanks to Michaela Williams for cranking Eye of the Tiger as cyclists made their way to the finish line at the club.
Sore bums, sore legs but worth every bit of it! Well done everyone.
It was really inspiring to see so many people go out of their comfort zone and take on such a tough physical challenge all for such a worthy cause. The Tour De Panna event raised $400 for the School of St Jude’s in Arusha, Tanzania as part of the Pannawonica Kilos for Kili fundraising effort. A massive thank you to our
