National and local conservation groups have called for stronger measures to protect Pilbara wildlife after a 39-year-old Pilbara man was fined for illegally possessing almost 100 native reptiles and amphibians. Wildlife officers found Adrian Scott Elsum of South Hedland in illegal possession of 11 highly poisonous desert death adders, 52 Stimson’s pythons, seven woma pythons and 20 northern green tree frogs during a search of his residence in 2010. Last week, he was found guilty of seven charges under the Wildlife Conservation Act and fined $4,500 and ordered to pay more than $3,700 in court costs. The Department of Environment and Conservation estimated that the seized animals had a market value of approximately $50,000. Darren Glover, the national manager for species, terrestrial and Indigenous partnerships at WWFAustralia welcomed the seizure but said the fines were not high enough to deter trafficking or unlawful possession of native animals. “The market value of those animals is around about $50,000, yet he got fined $4,500,” Mr Glover said. “[For anyone planning to traffic such animals] that could be pretty much be written off as a cost of doing business really. Mr Glover said “these sorts of offences are reasonably common” in Western Australia and the State’s Wildlife Conservation Act, drafted in the 1950s, needed updating to prevent them. Under the WA Act, the maximum penalty for possessing protected fauna is $4000, and up to $10,000 for specially protected fauna. But maximum penalties for
taking native fauna, especially endangered species, in NSW, Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory included fines in the hundreds-of-thousands of dollars and also the potential for custodial sentences, according to Mr Glover. Colin Roe, a reptile specialist with the Pilbara Wildlife Carers Association, said native animals were having a hard enough time surviving attacks from feral cats, foxes and dogs without “people also pinching them from the wild”. “I deal with the Pilbara Wildlife Carers and sometimes you get injured reptiles and you bust your gut trying to save one animal,” Mr Roe said. “In fact, just this morning, I released a Blue Tongue back into the wild that had been injured. “Then somebody comes along and just takes 100 animals. Mr Roe was also concerned by the conditions in which traffickers and illegal collectors kept their animals. Most of the animals seized by the DEC from South Hedland man Mr Elsum were unable to be returned to the wild because it was feared that they could introduce disease to wild populations. Despite such concerns, however, DEC wildlife officer Matt Swan said the fines had sent a strong message. “The penalty handed down to Mr Elsum this week serves as a warning to anyone who might be tempted to take protected fauna unlawfully or who have reptiles in their possession illegally,” he said. Anyone who has information about the illegal removal of reptiles or notices any suspicious activity suggesting that reptiles are being kept illegally should call DEC’s Wildlife Watch hotline on 1800 449 453.

echonews echo news in more than 100 such RFDS evacuations each year. But Mr Moule said the Shire of Ashburton should now step up to take responsibility for the airstrip’s running costs.

Tom Price residents keep fighting for Flying Doctor airstrip By Ben Leahy Tom Price residents are continuing to fight for their own Royal Flying Doctor Service airstrip as the number of medical evacuations from the town increases. Steve Moule, the president of St John’s Ambulance in Tom Price, will present a petition at the Shire of Ashburton’s next meeting on October 17 urging councillors to reconsider their support for the airstrip. Councillors had voted in August to reject a proposal that they fund the RFDS airstrip’s operating costs, likely to be between $10,000 and $20,000 per year. This was despite the fact that Mr Moule, who is a volunteer for St John’s, had already secured land and funding for the $4 million project from Rio Tinto, Fortescue Metals Group and the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program. “We’ve basically got the money to build it – that would mean the runway is sealed, the airport is fenced and the lighting is done,” Mr Moule said. “But we can’t build something if no one is going to be responsible for its upkeep.” Mr Moule has been pushing for an airstrip to be built in Tom Price for the past three years because
Currently, four out of five airports in the Shire of Ashburton are privately run by mining companies, but Mr Moule said it was normal practice in other shires for a council to meet an airport’s operating costs. The Shires of Roebourne and East Pilbara own and operate all airports in their districts, according to Mr Moule.

RFDS save lives,” Mr Moule said.
With government across the Pilbara focusing on increased investment spending, Mr Moule said essential services should be first priority for funding.
“Instead, we’ve got a nice veranda that cost us $10 million, yet you still get wet when it rains,” Mr Moule said, referring to the covered walkway built as part of the Tom Price Revitalisation Project in the town’s centre.
“At the end of the day, the hospital, the ambulance and the
“If you are a heart attack victim or a pregnant woman or in need of surgery for your appendix, until you get on that surgeon’s table, you are in a critical condition.” According to Mr Moule, the number of RFDS evacuations has quadrupled from around 48 to approximately 170 per year in the six years he has volunteered for St John’s in Tom Price. Each evacuation is not only critical for the patients but time consuming for the volunteers who support them. A typical emergency response and evacuation to Paraburdoo can be anywhere between a three-to-10-hour round trip and require the services of two volunteers and a nurse – and even a doctor in certain cases. Mr Moule, who received the Premier’s Active Citizenship Award in January for his service to the community, participates
“We are the only town in the northern half of Western Australia that doesn’t have an airstrip – every other WA town that needs an airstrip has got one.
Grahame Marshall, CEO, RFDS Western Operations
But opposition to the Tom Price RFDS airstrip among Shire of Ashburton councillors appears to be determined by regional differences.
“In 2011/12 we carried 8,606 sick and injured patients from around the State, received 35,386 calls for medical advice and assistance, and conducted 2,435 clinics at rural and remote sites.”

patients currently needing RFDS emergency airlifts to Perth must first be driven 80 kilometres to Rio Tinto’s Paraburdoo airport. “It is all about time for emergency patients, and I know of patients dying or those that lived being adversely affected because of the time it took [to evacuate them from Tom Price],” Mr Moule said.

Woodside, as operator of Karratha Gas Plant (KGP) and Pluto LNG, takes seriously its commitment to responsible environmental management. Flaring is an essential process for safe operations of a gas plant and is normal industry practice. Recently you may have noticed some dark smoke flaring from KGP. This is because the Operations Flare is temporarily out-of-service. Hydrocarbons that usually go through the Operations Flare have been temporarily diverted to the Main Flare Tower, during which time the KGP is more susceptible to dark smoke flaring.
Our focus is to safely and efficiently complete the work on the Operations Flare to minimise the risk of any dark smoke flaring, while maintaining safe and reliable operations. At Pluto LNG we are continuing to focus on safe and efficient commissioning activities. You will have noticed a reduction in flaring as the plant nears the final stages of the transition into normal operations.

Exmouth Shire Council supports daily FIFO initiative The Exmouth Shire Council formally expressed support at its September meeting for Rio Tinto daily fly-in, fly-out initiatives to accommodate some of their workforce in Exmouth. Rio Tinto will now be able to use existing tourist accommodation in Exmouth to accommodate a portion of its construction workforce, who will fly daily to the company’s East Pilbara mine sites. Shire President Turk Shales said Rio Tinto is conscious of the Exmouth way of life and the importance of the tourism industry to the local economy. “A Memorandum of Understanding will be developed between the Shire Council and Rio Tinto to put measures in place to ensure that the daily FIFO initiative is successful for our community,” Mr Shales said. The Exmouth Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Jon Warren advocated the benefits for the wider business community. “It is anticipated around 40 workers could be accommodated in Exmouth with a gradual expansion
of numbers so the impact throughout town can be managed sustainably,” he said. “Workers will be distributed across several accommodation options, supporting higher and more consistent occupancy rates throughout the year, which in turn will assist in potential new accommodation developments to commence in our town.”
“This as an opportunity for Exmouth to boost its own tourism destiny.”
hoped this could be the first step in attracting resource sector workers and families to permanently reside in Exmouth and help provide a sustainable population base. The Shire of Exmouth has also partnered with the Exmouth Visitor Centre and Exmouth Chamber of Commerce and Industry to put forward a proposal to Rio Tinto in which the Visitor Centre can market local holiday packages to East Pilbara workers. The Exmouth Visitor Centre President Jim Williams said the aircraft
Other Exmouth businesses will also benefit from increased patronage, like bus charters, catering businesses and tour operators. Council members also
transporting Rio Tinto’s construction workforce from Exmouth to the East Pilbara mine sites must return to Exmouth during the day due to limited space. “We see this as an exciting opportunity to utilise the empty seats of the aircraft to bring East Pilbara based residents and workers on their days and weeks off to Exmouth for holidays,” Mr Williams said. “This as an opportunity for Exmouth to boost its own tourism destiny,” Mr Shales said.

New lab to help reduce carbon emissions from oil and gas The University of Western Australia will lead research to reduce carbon emissions when a new world-class CO2 research facility is built on its campus in 2013. UWA’s CO2 research facility will work closely with the Federal Government funded $48 million National Geosequestration Laboratory (NGL) opened at the Australian Resources Research Centre (ARRC) in Perth. UWA’s facility and the NGL will develop innovative solutions to minimise risk in the long-term geological storage of carbon dioxide, which is a by-product of oil and gas extraction. UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Johnson said the University’s CO2 laboratory and the NGL would be draw-cards for attracting global research talent and help Australia to build capability and create a talent pool in carbon capture storage. “Universities play an important role in carbon storage research and development and, together with other institutions, industry and government, we can help to provide certainty, objective data and analysis, and
the rigour needed to find the right technology for this process,” he said. The Minister for Science and Research, Senator the Hon Chris Evans, said the NGL would be one of the most significant international centres for research, training and technology development for the global resources sector. “By strengthening partnerships between industry, government and the global research community we will secure genuine sustainability and lasting prosperity,” Senator Evans said. The Commonwealth Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education fund the NGL through the federal Education Investment Fund. The research forms a key component of Australia’s drive to achieve a reduced carbon resources and energy economy and is vital for Australia’s massive oil and gas industry, which has more than $200 billion invested in current projects. The International Energy Agency predicts that one-fifth of the world’s carbon dioxide reductions necessary by 2050 will have to come from carbon
capture storage (CCS). UWA’s Energy and Minerals Institute Director and WA:ERA Board member Tim Shanahan said the NGL helped to position Australia as a world leader in developing deployable CCS solutions. “Research outcomes at UWA will be used to reduce and capture carbon emissions in the most efficient and safe way,” Mr Shanahan said. “UWA’s state of the art CO2 facility will be led by worldclass scientists to produce cutting-edge research into new techniques in geophysical monitoring and further our understanding of the complex properties of CO2 through advanced process engineering. “The teaching labs will ensure our students graduate with the highest skills and most relevant, accredited training.” The NGL will be a collaborative project between the CSIRO, UWA and Curtin University. It complements and builds on the successes of the Western Australian Energy Research Alliance and aims to develop and deploy critical research and development to help enable commercial-scale carbon storage in Australia.

Foreign sparrows a threat to the Pilbara Environment officials are reminding the public to report sightings of unusual birds following the discovery of two tree sparrows at the Onslow foreshore. Department of Agriculture and Food biosecurity officer Michael Elliott said a tourist spotted the birds nesting in a palm tree and reported them to the Department of Environment and Conversation. Mr Elliott said the tree sparrows had most likely flown in from a ship, highlighting how the Pilbara’s shipping activity increased the risk of incursions by exotic birds. “It is important for those working and living at or near ports to help protect our native wildlife and agricultural
industries from exotic pests by quickly reporting any unusual birds,” Mr Elliott said. Tree sparrows are a declared pest in Western Australia and have the potential to damage grain and horticulture crops and spread disease. They are about 15 centimetres long and look similar to finches but are slightly plumper. They are brown or dark grey in colour, with a streaked back and a wedge-shaped beak. Any sightings of sparrows or other unusual birds in the area should be reported to the department’s Pest and Disease Information Service on freecall 1800 084 881. Upon arrival at Melbourne airport, Kylie came across a shy ex-Channel 7 Newsreader by the name of Jeff Newman, and this brush with fame left her star-struck and triggered a new obsession: she would hunt out as many celebrities as she could while in Melbourne. Next was Steve from the Channel 7 series My Kitchen Rules, then as we were walking the streets after dinner she heard a voice in the car park: Damien Bodie aka Jonathan from TV Show Winners and Losers. After this, she really started to get a taste for “star-hunting”: as she called it.
We had another name for it – stalking. GF Day came and she was given her pass to the Corporate Marque of the MCG pre-game function. The first bounce might have been still sometime away, but for Kylie it was game on. First she met Basil Zemplas, Danny Frawley and Mark Pickering from Fox Footy and the crew from ABC show, The Chaser. Then she found the Channel 7 tent: look out, Reece Mastin, Mark Scaife and ex-cricketers Brendan Julian and Greg Blewett. The AFL’s current stars didn’t miss out with quirky photos of West Coast’s big Nic Nat, The Pav, Leigh Montangna, Simon Black, Tex Walker and even Brownlow Medallist Jobe Watson. Ex footy players fared no better (maybe they were also slowing down in their old age) as she rounded up Nathan Brown,
She didn’t let up once we reached the ground either.
Well, so excited that she almost pulled his arm from its socket as she latched on according to a number of witnesses present at the time.
She spent her time wandering through the crowd eyes looking for the next prize.
Then came Cam Ling, Brad Ottens , Stevie J and coach Chris Scott.
At the bar, she came across the great Molly Meldrum.
Dreams fulfilled she continued snapping away with the usual poses of massive grin and thumbs up, capturing Paul Kelly, Stephen Curry, Johnny Ruffo, Mick Malloy and nearly the whole cast from Channel 7’s Winners & Losers (who were actually really friendly and chatty).
Gary Lyon, Brett Kirk, Mark Ricciuto, Troy Selwood and Michael O’Loughlin.
In the stadium aisles she found Koshi, Mark Beretta and Fitzy the ex-footballer and Big Brother contestant. Finally, though, it was game time. What a fantastic game of footy, which will go down as one of the greatest AFL Grand Finals of all time. But not even such a thrilling match could slow the Karratha Stalker down. Now she was on the hunt for her beloved Cats players. How excited was she when she saw one Billy Brownless strolling across the dance floor.
And. as your mystery correspondent reporting on the adventures of the Karratha Stalker, can I just sign-off by saying that it was an unbelievable day. It was the best fun we have had in ages and congratulations to our Karratha Stalker for getting in and having a good old laugh with some A,B, C and maybe even F Grade celebrities.

Karratha KFC raises money for World Hunger Relief By Ben Leahy Karratha’s KFC restaurant might not strike you as the first place to look for support for malnourished children and families around the world. But this month, the restaurant raised $14,000 for World Hunger Relief – the most by any of the 800 KFC and Pizza Hut stores across Australia that participated in the drive. All World Hunger Relief funds will now go to the World Food Program, which provides food assistance around the world. Karratha KFC manager, Sally Sawyer, was delighted her store raised the most in the country.
“The team at Karratha had a lot of energy and passion for changing people’s lives and raising money for World Hunger Relief,” she said. Ms Sawyer said her team in Karratha collected coin donations from customers and held car washes and social events for employees, featuring prizes and games. KFC managing director Tony Lowings said 30,000 KFC and Pizza Hut employees participated in World Hunger Relief each year. “We have raised more than $3.7 million since 2007,” Mr Lowings said.
The World Hunger Relief program has provided more than 460 million meals to those in need of food assistance and has raised more than US$115 million for hunger-fighting organisations. This year’s funds will support World Food Programme’s food assistance, which each year reaches an average of more than 90 million people in over 70 countries. By Ben Leahy A Canberra-based analyst has said security strategy in Western Australia’s North West would not be radically different under a Coalition government. This comes despite Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott recently thrusting national security back into the headlines by promising he would put greater focus on protecting the Pilbara’s offshore oil and gas reserves. Mr Abbot said an elected Coalition Government would immediately purchase state-of-the-art Global Hawk unmanned aircraft for surveillance in the region and publish a new Defence White Paper focused on Australia’s resource-rich areas. But Andrew Davies, a senior analyst with the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, said the Labor Government was already planning to purchase unmanned aerial vehicles. “One of the things no one noticed is that when the Government put out the latest version of the Defence Capability Plan this year, a whole bunch of things had been moved further out into the future except for one,” Mr Davies said. “And the one [purchase] that had been
moved forward was the Global Hawk. The Opposition managed to “pinch the headlines [on this issue], which is a neat trick, but there is not a lot of difference between the positions [of the two parties],” Mr Davies said. Mr Davies said the wealth in Australia’s North West made security an important issue but that sometimes the level of threat could be exaggerated. “The remoteness is both a curse and a blessing,” he said. “It means it is difficult for anyone else to get out there and arrive with the numbers to actually do anything. “But it also makes it hard to keep an eye on the whole area and also respond if anything happens.” Mr Davies said State-armed adversaries were likely to pose the most serious threat to the North West because they would have the resources to target the remote region. Terrorism, on the other hand, tended to target high visibility areas, like big cities, while asylum seekers posed more of a border security problem, Mr Davies said. To protect against current threats,

A not so taxing return
Mr Davies recommended that more Australian Defence Force personnel and a mix of patrol boats and surveillance aircraft, such as the Global Hawk, be posted in areas, like Karratha and Broome. But he said the Global Hawk should be used in tandem with a range of other unmanned aircraft. “The Global Hawk is a $230 million aircraft and the way to think of it is as a flyable satellite,” Mr Davies said. “It sits up at high altitude, covers a huge area and stays up for over a day at a time. “So it is like a surveillance satellite, you could use to watch the Indian Ocean and beyond. “But there are smaller surveillances drones – maritime patrol versions of the Reaper and the Predator, the sort that have been doing drone strikes in Pakistan and Afghanistan – that are less than a tenth of the cost the Global Hawk. “They still have endurance well over 12 hours and they can fly lower [to better observe targets]. “And most of the oil and gas fields would come within range of the smaller drones.”
If your joy for completing mandatory taxation obligations is anything like mine, you have a two metre high pile of paperwork stacked up in some dark, fearful corner of the house. Light reading it ain’t. At this time of year, I therefore propose a new system for obliging the national financial powers. It will appeal to both the left brained, right brained and brain drained among us.
Here’s a foolproof recipe for those of you who do, like me, from paperwork recoil and flee the filing challenged, look and see! I’ll show you how to do your tax, a method to halt you in your tracks. Be sure to gather all your facts and then by Einstein, you’ll relax.
Now that you have your place to work it’s simply time to go berserk because, no doubt, like me, a jerk, you’ve left things way too late, ALERT! – Make all your papers colour coded sort it all, even if eroded, nibbled by mice or crushed or folded, pile by pile, your bills unloaded.
Once you’ve piled things bit by bit and are not feeling such a git, organised? Now, this is it you’re ready - it’s time to commit. There’s one last thing ‘fore you begin to clear up all your filing sin. You’ll need an empty Milo tin to hold the yang and stir the yin.
First you choose the room that’s best and block out thoughts of all the rest and in it will sins be confessed of unpaid bills and paper mess. I pick forsooth the dining room: expansive for the tasks that loom, its windows etched against this gloom as I prepare to face my doom.
All my yellow ones are banking, unpaid fees, I need a spanking. Red is death threats, due dates clanking, green, obscene receipts, I’m tanking. Blue might be for phone bills, bless, depending on your line, I guess, landline, mobile, I confess I blew the budget, such a mess.
Oh yes, I’m talking large paint brush and tin of glue, may it long gush, to stroke your papers, cool and lush. But what is this? You blush, then hush. Indeed, my plan (shared brilliantly) is to wallpaper your room with glee. Papers recycle! Set them free, ‘cause doing your tax is an art you see.

Frontier Services staff from the Pilbara travelled to Geelong last month to join community workers from across Australia in celebrating the Centenary of the organisation’s founding by John Flynn. One hundred years ago, the Presbyterian Church appointed the task of founding a new organisation called the Australian Inland Mission to Reverend John Flynn, the man on Australia’s $20 note. Through the Australian Inland Mission, later renamed Frontier Services, Reverend Flynn sought to bring care and support to people living in remote areas.
Services workers] came together from all over Australia to talk about the organisation and its future, to take workshops and to meet and learn what each other does,” Thomson-Harry said. Among the guest speakers during the week of celebrations was Frontier Services Patron Tim Fischer AC and the Minister for Regional Australia Simon Crean. Frontier Services also has a long connection with the Pilbara. One year after Reverend Flynn founded the AIM in 1912, the organisation was already setting up a base in the East Pilbara after a Mr Stevens set out from Port Hedland. The AIM also built the first hospital in Port Hedland in 1915.
Reverend Flynn also pioneered many notable projects, including the Aerial Medical Service, which would later become the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Today, Frontier Services continues the work of its successor, the AIM, by providing essential support and services to 15,000 families.
Frontier Services Regional Manager for Western Australia Trish ThomsonHarry said the Centenary celebrations were a chance to celebrate the organisation’s history.
It is the major provider of aged care, health, family and community services, and pastoral support to people living in Australia’s most remote and isolated places.
“More than 200 of us [Frontier
Thomson-Harry said these qualities
of providing care in challenging conditions inspired workers to join Frontier Services. “For a lot of us the inspiration is being out in places where other people don’t want to go and working with people that no one else often wants to work with. “I think that suits a lot of people to be with an organisation that doesn’t just talk but actually acts.” Thomson-Harry and Frontier Services workers from the Pilbara and Kimberly embraced this spirit by deciding to drive all the way to Geelong. The drive not only took them through remote communities but also helped to promote the organisation. It also showed how Frontier Services work gets in people’s blood with people stopping Thomson-Harry along the way to Geelong to say they had been associated with the organisation in the past. But the one person who outdid the rest, was the old man at the Centenary event in Geelong, who first attended Frontier Service’s fiftieth anniversary celebrations fifty years ago.

King of Australia’s snakes Mulga Snake Pseudechis australis A large (total length: 2 metres in Pilbara), moderately robust snake with broad head. Colouration is variable, ranging from pale brown and olive to reddish-brown (rarely black), often with a reticulated pattern caused by a pale anterior portion of each dorsal scale. Belly is cream to yellow, often with reddish-brown base. This species is also known as the King Brown Snake. One of the most common large venomous snakes in the Pilbara, and widespread throughout Australia. Often mistaken for a
Gwardar or Western Brown Snake It differs by having only subcaudals posteriorly divided (v. all divided) and a more robust build with a broader head (v. a more slender build with narrow head). Occurs throughout the Pilbara, including Barrow Island, in a variety of habitats, including spinifex sandplains, along watercourses, woodlands, rocky areas and frequently seen around abandoned homesteads. They are commonly trapped down wells and old mine shafts. Will shelter under anything that provides sufficient cover, such as large
Wildlife watch: Purple Swamphen The Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio), also known as a Purple Coot, is a large bird in the Rallidae (rails) family. This chicken-sized bird, with its huge feet, bright plumage, red bill and frontal shield is easily-recognisable. Australasian and Indonesian birds have black backs and heads. The species is highly dispersive. Purple Swamphens are considered to be the ancestors of several island species, including the extinct Lord Howe Swamphen and two species of Takah in New Zealand. The species make loud, quick, bleating and hooting calls, which are not very bird-like in tone. It is particularly noisy during the breeding season. Despite being clumsy in flight, it can fly long distances and is a good swimmer for a bird without webbed feet. The Purple Swamphen prefers wet areas with high rainfall, swamps, lake edges and damp pastures. They often live in pairs and larger communities and clamber through the reeds, eating the tender shoots and vegetable-like matter. Purple Swamphens are generally seasonal breeders, but the season varies across their large range, correlating with peak rainfall in many places,

or summer in more temperate climes. They breed in warm reed beds. The male has an elaborate courtship display, holding waterweeds in his bill and bowing to the female with loud chuckles. In the western parts of the range, the pattern of social behaviour tends to be monogamy, but cooperative breeding groups are more common in the eastern parts of the range. These groups may consist of multiple females and males sharing a nest, or a male and female pair with helpers drawn from previous clutches. Pairs nest in a large pad of interwoven reed flags on a mass of floating debris or among matted reeds slightly above water level in swamps, clumps of rushes, paddocks or long unkempt grass. Multiple females may lie in the one nest and share the incubation duties. Each bird can lay three to six speckled eggs, blotched and spotted with reddish brown. A communal nest may contain up to 12 eggs. The incubation period is 23– 27 days and performed by both sexes as well as any helpers that might be present. The precocious chicks are feathered with downy black feathers and able to leave the nest soon after hatching, but will often remain in it for a few days. Parents and group members feed young chicks for 10–14 days, after which they begin to feed themselves. Purple Swamphens have been known to eat eggs, ducklings, small fish and invertebrates such as snails. They have even been known to attack large eels. They will often use one foot to bring food to their mouth rather than eat it on the ground. Where they are not persecuted, they can become tame and be readily seen in towns and cities.
Last week, the Pilbara Echo brought you a range of snake awareness tips. Now here is a guide from the Field Guide to Snakes of the Pilbara by Brian Bush and Brad Maryan to one of the Pilbara’s most dangerous snakes, the Mulga Snake, also known as the King Brown.
nights in the inland Pilbara when most other snakes are inactive. It has a tendency to hang on and chew when biting and is literally Australia’s most venomous snake, delivering more venom at a single bite than any other. The Mulga Snake will bite when trodden on, threatened or handled. Its defensive posture includes dorsally flattening the forebody, presenting the broadest aspect to the aggressor. Generally considered to be placid compared to the highly nervous brown snakes. DANGEROUSLY VENOMOUS.

Getting on top of the cash flow challenge It’s a very old story and it’s known to every businessperson – some trade debtors are slow payers. It’s not that they won’t pay. It’s just that for a whole range of reasons, they take longer to put the cheque ‘in the post.’ Ordinarily that’s not too much of an issue. But what if your own cash flow is going through one of those ‘tight’ periods? Or perhaps a particular job has been larger than usual so the amount outstanding is more significant. Similarly, any business subject to seasonal variation, and certainly every business that has experienced growing pains knows that ‘cash is king,’ and having cash locked up in invoices can be highly frustrating. What are the options? According to Al Rosano of West Coast of Fifo Capital, invoice financ-
ing is the ideal solution for small to medium businesses with working capital stress. Invoice financing refers to the business selling one or more of its current invoices to a third party, which then pays the business a large part of the face value of the invoice. In Fifo Capital’s case, Al says, that’s up 90% of the value. Then, when your trade debtor actually settles the account, Fifo Capital West Coast remits the balance of 10%, less its fee. According to Al the advantages are considerable. “It could be that you want to invest in new plant or equipment, or you simply need a quick fix to meet your own obligations. “Rather than having to go to your bank for additional overdraft or other borrowing arrangements that
generally require collateral, you simply turn the asset you already have – the invoice, into instant cash. “It’s amazingly quick, painless and efficient. And it’s also becoming a preferred option. “In fact, many banks will recommend it because it does not interfere in any way with your existing financing.” From first contact Fifo Capital West Coast generally pays within 24 hours. But Al says that after that first transaction, one fax is all it takes and subsequent invoices will be turned into cash within 2 hours! From $10,000.00 to $1 Million. Anyone interested in this highly effective solution to an old problem can discuss his or her requirements by contacting Al Rosano at 0419 906 326.

University of Western Australia’s Aspire to the Arts road show will visit Tom Price Senior High School and Newman Senior High School to present a series of artfocused activities to show how exciting and interesting the arts can be. The road show aims to raise awareness of tertiary study options after high school and encourage students with academic potential to aspire to university study, regardless of their circumstances. The program visited Hedland SHS, Karratha SHS and St Luke’s College in September. Staff from the UWA’s Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Centre for the History of Emotions and Berndt Museum will introduce students to Asian Studies as well as a study of the way emotions are portrayed

in art, film making and in the curating of museum exhibitions. In addition to student activities, UWA staff will also present professional development workshops for teachers on topics such as Australian literature and the history of emotions. The University is also keen to connect with the wider community and will hold evening events to inform parents and other interested people about the arts. The events will showcase short films by UWA students and school students, who participated in Aspire UWA camps in Perth, to give people an idea of what an arts degree encompasses. Aspire UWA is a partner program between the University and schools in the Pilbara, Kimberley, Mid-West and Gascoyne regions and outer metropolitan Perth.
The State Government late last month committed $6.85 million in funding over four years for shark mitigation education and research. The announcement comes after there were five fatal shark attacks in Western Australia in the past 10 months, leading the Government to announce a controversial policy to kill any shark that potentially poses a threat to swimmers. Leading shark researchers at The University of Western Australia welcomed the Government’s commitment to provide greater funding, and said it could extend their research into sensory deterrents that might prevent shark attacks. Associate Professor Nathan
“If we can predict how sharks will see certain objects ..we [could] even begin to manipulate their behaviour” Hart and WA Premier’s Fellow and Winthrop Professor Shaun Collin, who leads the Neuroecology Group at UWA, are world leaders in shark sensory biology. “If we can predict how sharks will see certain objects in the water, we can begin to predict how they will react under certain circumstances
and we can even begin to manipulate their behaviour,” Associate Professor Hart said. The two researchers are currently developing shark attack deterrent wetsuits in a project co-funded by local WA company Dunbar Harper and the WA Government. UWA’s Oceans Institute held a shark mitigation research meeting in Scarborough earlier this month with the government, business and wider. The purpose of the meeting was to hear major concerns arising from the recent spate of fatal shark attacks along the WA coastline and identify areas of research that can be addressed with existing and new areas of expertise at UWA.

Going pink for breast cancer research By Ben Leahy The National Breast Cancer Foundation is urging Pilbara and North West residents to go pink again this year for cancer research and host a Pink Ribbon Breakfast. North West residents have raised more than $140,000 for the foundation in the past five years. Carole Renouf, CEO of the National Breast Cancer Foundation, said each Pink Ribbon Breakfast is helping bring an end to deaths caused by the disease.
“Over the past 18 years since the Foundation was established, research has transformed the experience of women with breast cancer,” Ms Renouf said. “We now have access to earlier detection and more effective and targeted treatments. “The next more deaths.”

Tanya Argent, the business services officer at Karratha’s Horizon Power office said Pink Ribbon was a great cause but that it was rivalry with the company’s Port Hedland office that initially led them to host
their own breakfast last year. “The Port Hedland office absolutely love Pink Ribbon – one of the ladies up there has got a pink car and all of their computers are pink,” Tanya said. “So we thought we’d give them a run for their money, we challenged them and ended up beating them [by raising more money]. “It sounds silly doesn’t it, but it was all for a good cause and was a lot of fun.” Yet the rivalry may also get a little more serious than Tanya lets on.
She said the Port Hedland office hadn’t yet handed over the prize for victory to Horizon’s Karratha team. “They’ve got a trophy and they won’t give it to me,” Tanya joked. Tanya said the key to the success of the Karratha office was making their Pink Ribbon Breakfast as fun as possible. A feature was their bakeoff competition, with the 10year old daughter of one of the employees drawing pink pigs on her cupcakes to take out the prize for the best-

Tamara Binamat Tom Price school chaplain Raelene Hick’s efforts to coordinate the school breakfast club at Tom Price Senior High School have earned her Foodbank WA’s 2012 School Breakfast Program (SBP) Volunteer of the Year Award. The school breakfast club was introduced at Tom Price SHS four years ago as many students, some as far as Paraburdoo, were finding it hard to have a good breakfast – and still be on time for school at 7.45am. Raelene, who has been a chaplain at Tom Price for almost six years, says she is thrilled with the award, which aims to acknowledge
Raelene says the SBP supports her pastoral care role as a YouthCARE school chaplain. “Spending time with the students in the mornings has opened up many opportunities to share stories, develop closer relationships and have fun together, whilst giving them a good start to the morning,” she said. Presently 395 public schools across WA make use of the SBP. The respective school principals endorsed nominations for the volunteer awards. Student Services Coordinator Bianca McRae said Raelene is an excellent chaplain who works very hard to ensure students are
well looked after. “Even though Raelene only works part time at the school she ensures the program is run every school day,” she said. “Raelene often gets to school very early to provide hot breakfast for students.“

Horizon’s community and customer relations manager, Roman Raudonikis, produced the tastiest cake on the day. Tanya said she has some new ideas for this year’s Pink Ribbon Breakfast and that, crucially, she hasn’t taken her eyes off the grand prize. “It is all good, just so long as we beat Hedland again,” she said. Local chaplain receives 2012 Foodbank Volunteer Award volunteers across the State for their efforts. However, she is quick to acknowledge the ongoing support and care of staff at the school who also contribute to the program’s success. “It’s no mean feat to run a program of this nature and we wouldn’t have been able to do this without the support and care of staff who serve nutritious breakfasts, which include fresh produce as well as non-perishable products,” said Raelene. An amazing 617 kilograms of perishable and non-perishable goods were delivered to Tom Price SHS from Jan 1 to September 26 this year.

Your Life and Soul By Cindy Kempton To me, the word exercise comes in three levels. Level one exercisers are those that exercise for general health and wellbeing - they are happy with the way their bodies are and like the feel exercise gives them. These guys exercise how our Government tell us to, “30 minutes a day, three times a week”. To do this, you can walk the dog, put the bubby in the pram and push the footpaths for 30 minutes, try gentle swimming, or a leisurely game of golf. Level two exercisers, are aiming for a particular goal for weight loss, cardio improvement, strength and power increase or like to train at a higher level. They will be found, quite often, with their heart
rate monitors on, pushing their bodies into the fat burning zone and high-fiving themselves when they feel like they have pushed themselves just that bit further. Runners, ocean swimmers, high gym goers, crossfitters and strength trainers fall into this category. No matter what type of exercise they do, they like to do it hard. The third type of exercisers are those that enjoy the ultimate in training. They aim for a personal best everytime and thrive on the adrenaline of the sport or training they do. Their heart rates sits constantly in the training zone and they love the feeling of achievement and accomplishment after every training session.
These are professional athletes, Mount Everest contenders, ultra marathon runners and the like. At the end of the day it, doesn’t matter which category that you fall in to. Most of us are either category one or two or generally category one striving for category two, but not necessarily category two striving for category three. Wherever you are in your quest for better fitness and health, the ultimate is that you are moving to the sound of your own drum, training because it makes you feel good and doing it because it is part of your life. A favourite saying of mine is “No matter how slow you go, you are still lapping those on the couch”. Enjoy your week.

Help save baby Steele By Tamara Binamat Karyn Bevan is appealing to our generous community on behalf of the Serramondi family to fundraise for vital medical equipment. Steele Serramondi has been diagnosed with Ebsteins anomaly of the tricuspid valve, a rare heart defect. Steele’s family live in Port Hedland and would greatly benefit from a small oxygen tank for the car. The tanks cost about $600 each. The hole in baby Steele’s heart means he is not getting enough oxygen to his body. A SATS machine is needed to monitor his heart rate and oxygen levels and alert if the levels are too low. This machine will cost around $2,000, an amount too high for a family with mounting medical and travel bills. Family friend Karen Bevan says fundraising for this equipment is a priority to improve Steele’s quality of life. “It will make their life a lot easier,” she said. “At the moment they take him to the hospital in Hedland for regular check ups, whereas this machine will mean if anything happens throughout the night it will be picked up.” Steele is just
9-months-old, in June he was rushed to Perth with the Royal Flying Doctor Service after turning “blue” at home. After an operation in Perth, Steele is finally back home with a long road ahead of him. “I’m hoping to raise funds to help them out with these machines and I guess it’s about raising awareness as well, “ said Karyn. Fundraising events include a quiz night on October 20 that includes a silent auction of donations from the community. Auction gear includes a West Coast Eagles signed
jersey, a photo canvas from Panna Rodeo, Body Shop products, clothing items, vouchers and more. The quiz night will be held at Karratha Senior High School upper school, near the Pilbara Institute from 6:30pm. Tables for eight to 10 people are available for sale at $15 per person. Full bar facilities are available and tables are selling quickly. To support the fundraising efforts or book a table at the quiz night, please call Karyn on 0438 928 053 or email karyn. bentley@bigpond. com.

Angel of Cuisine The weather sure is warming up. I’m dreaming of fishing and having my own big fish photo to share with you soon. I have caught a lot of big fish in my time in Karratha. You have to have nice strong arms if you want to win a battle with a photo worthy fish. To get those strong fish-fighting arms, my focus this week has been on strength training. I don’t find it as much fun as some of the cardio I do, but the strength you gain from strength training makes it worthwhile.

Selling prices will need to reflect the rental return as the market resets to provide the necessary returns to the investor base. The point to remember is the market is not in a spiral, it reflects the adjustment that is needed from time to time and of course investors are seeking an appropriate risk versus reward. In summary, property investment should never be a speculative or short-term proposition. Rather, it should be a medium to longterm prospect that takes into account the current and future growth of the region. Given the current and future projects surrounding Karratha and the global demand for our high quality resources, the future looks promising for investors for years to come.

Your rights as a lodger Let me start by saying that you must always obtain the permission of the owner or real estate agent before taking on a flat mate, lodger or boarder. So let’s look at who is a boarder?
By Sarah Freeman If you do not obtain permission, and the owner or property manager discovers an unauthorised person living in the property, then they may have cause to send you a letter of breach and terminate your tenancy. It is illegal to sub-let the property at any time without the owner or agent’s permission. However, if you seek permission, most agencies will be only too happy to discuss this with the lease holder. They will then likely ask the prospective fl at mate, lodger or boarder to fi l out an application form (just as you did) so they can carry out checks for worthiness and call the owner to inform them and gain consent. The Property Manager or owner should then send you a letter to say they either give or deny permission. If you are given permission, I would highly recommend you do a property condition report of the room or at least take dated photos and charge the ingoing occupant a small bond. I would also recommend that you make an agreement in writing stating rent payments and any other outgoings that are to be shared by the new occupant as well as notice for vacating the property. As the lease holder you will be responsible for any damage that occurs while the property is in your name irrespective of who did the damage.
A boarder is someone who receives meals in addition to being a lodger.
Does the agreement refer to a tenancy, renter or boarder?
There may be an issue as to whether the amount of food a person receives is enough for the person to be classified as a boarder.
Does the owner provide the tenant any linen, food or other services?
It has been said that board lies somewhere between an early morning cup of tea and a full bed and breakfast.
Sarah Freeman Senior Residential Investment Manager at North West Realty
Now let’s look at who is a flat mate? A fl at mate is generally someone who agrees to pay an equal share of the rent and utilities, will carry out their share of the housekeeping duties and either pay an equal share of house food or purchase their own. A fl at mate is generally regarded as someone who has an equal voice in how the household is run but this person is not the leaseholder so therefore not bound to the same compliance of the lease or Residential Tenancies Act.
❚ You must seek permission from the owner or agent, before you sub-let the property
It is useful to note, however, that the definitions of lodger, boarder and flat mate are not definitive and applying them to a person’s situation can often be difficult.
Flatmate
In attempting to determine whether or not a person is a lodger or a boarder, here are some useful questions to ask:
Is the tenant subject to any rules while at the premises?
???
• Do you pay an equal share of rent?
Does the person have a key to the front door?
Generally speaking, a lodger is someone who occupies part of the premises but whose occupation or residency is still under the control of the owner.
It can be diffi cult to determine whether a person is a boarder or a lodger.
Is the person expected to pay the same amount of bond as a tenant?
Further, it is important to remember that, even if the food received is insufficient for the person to be classified as a boarder, they may still be a lodger and therefore not covered by the Act.
Can the tenant come and go as they please?
Even when the owner does not live at the premises, the occupier or resident may still be classifi ed as a lodger if the owner retains control of the outer door of the building, or if they provide other services such as cleaning the room or making the bed.
What is the character of the premises, and the purpose for which occupation is made available?
Are the premises registered as a boarding house with the local council?
However, the question to ask is probably whether the food being received is trifling enough in value or in amount to be negligible or whether it constitutes a significant cost.
This is an important distinction – so you should know who is a lodger?
For example, the owner may live at the premises.
bathroom and toilet?
• Pay equal shares of food? • Share all the household duties?
Does the agreement provide for a daily rate of charge, rather than weekly or fortnightly amounts?
???
Lodger/Boarder
Is the term of the agreement for a fixed term, periodic or purely at the will of the owner?
• Do you have a key to the front door?
Are other parts of the agreement of the kind typically found in a tenancy agreement? For example, is the occupier under obligation to insure the premises or is it a term that grants quiet enjoyment to the occupier?
• Are cleaning services provided? • Are meals provided?
Does the occupier have exclusive use of a

This is a fantastic chance for investors to achieve a positive cash flow.
❚ This property features a securely fenced 767 square metres yard
An investor’s dream Investors, a great value-for-money investment awaits you in this 1997, three bedroom, two bathroom weatherboard property. Currently leased to a major, nationwide company until August 2014, it is rare to find a property with such long lease. Its three bedrooms all come with built-in robes, while the master bedroom features an ensuite. The large kitchen is neat and tidy, while the lounge room comes separate to a
quaint dining area. With a fenced yard, this corner block property is huge at 767 square metres, yet still low maintenance. It offers abundant parking and an undercover outdoor entertaining area. The reinforced concrete site features huge office and mezzanine areas (each 147 square metres), an expansive clearspan workshop and drive-through and drive-around access. There are four drive-through access points to the workshop, including three automatic entry doors plus an additional sliding door on the side. Three-phase power is provided and highbay lights fitted throughout. Door measurements are one 4mH x 4mW, one 5.4mH x 4.5mW, and two 5.4mH x 5mW. Roof height is substantial at 6.3 metres at the side of the gable.
Office facilities are just as impressive due to the concrete tilt panel construction, which offers excellent cooling insulation in Port Hedland’s hot climate. Ground floor offices include a spacious reception area and air conditioning, as well as data and phone points wired in. Two kitchenettes are provided along with three bathrooms. Travel upstairs, and you’re greeted with an enormous open plan area with kitchenette, data and phone points and multiple windows overlooking the carpark and Iron Ore and Manganese Streets. The entire 1740 square metres site with 15 car bays is heavy-duty reinforced concrete to suit truck and heavy vehicle traffic and heavy storage. Frontage to the street is level, landscaped and fenced in an attractive manner.
In an excellent location, the street attracts strong drive by traffic with high profile companies, including Rexel Electrical Supplies located directly opposite and Hitachi on the neighbouring site. This property makes an outstanding investment and will lease for a minimum $300,000 net of outgoings and GST in the first year and attract companies seeking long term minimum five-plus-five year leases. Packed with features, this property is sure to impress and offers investors a minimum 10.7 per cent net return at $5,769 rental per week. Construction on the site is currently underway with completion expected this November. This is a rare offering of a large office-cum-workshop, which has never before been available. BOC opens new Karratha plant BOC, a Member of the Linde Group, has announced the official launch of its state of the art Air Separation Unit (ASU) facility in Karratha, Western Australia, enhancing energy security of the State’s northwest. The ASU plant marks the next step in BOC’s regional capital works program following the completion of bulk gas storage and distribution facilities and the 2011 refurbishment of a Gas and Gear retail outlet in the Karratha’s Light Industrial Area. BOC’s ASU plant allows the gas and engineering company to deliver a reliable supply of nitrogen, oxygen and medical gases to industry and the
community in the North West region. BOC managing director South Pacific, Colin Isaac, said the opening of the ASU plant was a milestone in BOC’s 75-year history of providing gas-related expertise and products to the North West. “We are delighted to have successfully delivered this major project, which will supply products vital to the rapid expansion of the resources industry in northern WA,” he said. “BOC is investing more than $100 million in capital works in Karratha and the ASU project is a key element in the production and supply of essential industrial and medical gases.” New technology has allowed BOC to take a greener approach at its Karratha gas production facility, which
has the capacity to generate up to 60 tonnes of nitrogen per day. Using less than half the energy of traditional plants, the high-tech ASU is air cooled, the use of water consumption for cooling purposes. Local production has also reduced the reliance on interstate transport to deliver critical gas products to the area. Mr Isaac said this will enable BOC to deliver a cost-effective supply of industrial and medical gas to its growing customer base in the Pilbara region. “The Karratha ASU and distribution facilities will form an integral part of BOC’s Australian operations, and its ability to meet growing energy requirements locally and across the Pacific region,” Mr Isaac said.

Time to clean your water softener/filter Recent tests conducted by the Shire’s Environmental Health Service has shown low levels of bacteria in water samples from the kitchen sink, hand basin and shower of two houses in Karratha. It is believed that this may have been caused by the use of residential sized water softeners/filter systems, which remove chlorine prior to it entering the house, or where a hot water unit has been switched off for a period of time. Chris Adams, Chief Executive Officer of the Shire said that normally any bacteria from the environment that may contaminate household taps and showerheads are killed off by chlorine in the water supply. However, water softeners and similar devices remove the chlorine from the water making it susceptible to contamination by bacteria such as Legionella that may enter the tap or showerhead from the outside. “Leaving water standing in hot water units that have been switched off will also allow the chlorine to dissipate away which can let bacteria grow” said Mr Adams. To help minimise the growth of any bacteria in your household taps and showerheads, the Shire’s Environmental Health Service recommends the following: •
Regularly empty and scrub out water softeners and filters to remove any scale, sludge or films that may contaminate your water supply.
•
Keep your hot water systems permanently at a temperature above 55 degrees.
•
If your house has been empty for more than a week flush the taps and showers before using the water.

How much can you afford to borrow? Many homebuyers don’t understand basic lending details, including how much they can borrow, until they actually apply for a loan. This is not ideal because an informed homebuyer is in a much better position to make an offer. Until about ten years ago the general ‘rule of thumb’ for buying a home was that you could borrow about three times your gross household income. So, if a couple were making $130,000 between them each year, a lender might loan up to $390,000. However, this measure doesn’t apply terribly well today with house prices having grown so much. If you are applying for a joint home loan with another person including your spouse or partner you must take into consideration their existing earnings and debts. Remember; both of you are legally liable for repaying the loan. The key to a smooth start with a home loan really rests with the deposit. If you don’t have a ready deposit, it’s wise to start a regular savings program in preparation for home ownership. Most lenders require recent evidence of three
months of genuine savings before approving a loan. If the deposit is a gift then the lender will normally require it to be in the borrowers bank account for three months. Talk to your financial institution about this. Most prefer a deposit of around 10 per cent the purchase price, but this has become unrealistic. Deposits of 5 per cent are now more common. Banks are keen to lend, but following the GFC they are also more thorough about checking your capacity to service the loan and giving consideration to any other debts you may have. Normally, any existing debt is included in the total amount you can borrow.
insurance, stamp duty or anything else. These costs are added to your home loan. Rather than looking at how much the bank will allow you to borrow, it makes more sense to concentrate on how much you can comfortably afford. Ideally you should aim for your weekly mortgage costs to be no higher than about 30 per cent of your household income. Don’t be a slave to
When calculating this, the maximum limit on your credit card will be deemed as debt even if you never reach that credit limit. Ask your lender to outline their policy in this regard and to detail all the fees that apply to the loan, including mortgage costs, mortgage
your mortgage, allow for some disposable income so you can enjoy the other things in life. Some lenders will not issue loans for more than 80 per cent of the purchase price, so buying a more modest dwelling might suit many buyers better as a lifestyle decision, both in terms of gaining access to a loan and for comfort of repayments. ....comes back to the Pilbara The release of his brand new album Trouble’s Door is the solidification of two years of change for Ash Grunwald personally and a reflection of the shifts in the world around us.
Chasing the Lolly Man is a one-man show devised and performed by one of Queensland’s most dynamic and funny Indigenous performers, Mark Sheppard. Hedland theatre-goers had the chance to experience this original comedy on Wednesday night when Mark Sheppard skipped into town. The show is a sharing of stories, a celebration of urban Indigenous identity and takes a satirical look at the media and popular culture. Playing a variety of characters, weaving stand up with storytelling and clowning around, Mark poked
fun at everything from Neighbours (what would it be like if a Murri family moved into Ramsey Street) to politics. The title Chasing the Lolly Man refers to a game that Mark used to play with his wider community in Mareeba when he was growing up. They would all gather round the night before the local picnic and sew lollies onto a hessian sack. The following day, the ‘Lolly Man’ would arrive wearing the sack, all the kids would chase after him and at the end they would all get a lolly bag. The Matt Dann Cultural Centre is located on Hamilton Rd, South Hedland.

”It’s really interesting to explore new areas.” So what gadgets can we expect to see in Karratha? “Well because I’ve had to pack light when I’ve played in Karratha, I’ve [even] mixed beats on my iPhone [there] before!” Ash revealed. “I think it sounded really cool and people really liked it, but I stopped doing it because it just looked too funny.” Now you can expect to see Ash using an array of devices including a laptop and plugins and still his old kick box. All that’s being asked of you this time around is when you shake your booty, you shake your booty for change.
Ash Grunwald will be performing at Karratha Tavern on Bond Place on Thursday, November1. Doors open 8pm. Tickets $35 + bf pre/$40 door from www.heatseeker.com The Pilbara Echo is giving away two double passes to Ash’s Karratha show. To win, join our facebook page and let us know you want them!

His track ‘Walking’ played a starring role in the Hollywood movie Limitless, new friendships were formed with Kram from Spiderbait and Vika and Linda Bull and a new home with a new home studio were built, from which was birthed his brand new album Trouble’s Door. In the new songs, Ash – along with his good pal and dubstep side project partner, Fingers - has created his most internal album to date, one that found life through the fiery breath of injustice; the frustration of severe political and environmental mismanagement. “It’s some of my most personal songwriting,” Ash says of Trouble’s Door. Trouble’s Door touches on the strength that now lies to keep each other informed no matter who we are or where we live in the community. And just like the light and dark of the words, the music itself traverses many tales; the blues propelled by driving dancefloor rhythms, buoyed by hip hop beats and slammed by the dubstep crunch. Naturally. Ash has toured regional WA for many years and will be returning to Karratha on Thursday, November 20 to
play at the Karratha Tavern. “In Karratha, people have come from far and wide around Australia. I play all over Australia so there’s different points and different places people have seen me and people know what to expect at the gig, which is hopefully a good time!” he laughed. “I meet people and they tell me stories about gigs they went to in different places, and I think wow!” Ash goes on to talk about his new show and especially what those at the Karratha show can expect. “My new show is a hybrid of styles. There’s my old style of stomping kind of blues, a lot of my new stuff includes a different style of blues and different production techniques,” he said. “I sort of replicate that live by using my computer to trigger different beats. “I keep it kind of dancy” Ash still describes his sound as bluesy and soulful without fitting into one genre as easy as it used to. “I’m really capitalising on the things that are happening around me and the styles of music, and tried to use technology to try make something bigger and fatter,” he said.

By Ben Leahy The desert sun won’t be the only thing raising temperatures once gym-toned male and female dancers from Body Heat Australia take over Karratha’s Tambrey Tavern stage on October 17 and 18. Body Heat manager John Cervoni said the one-and-a-half hour show will feature humour, sexy choreography by the two-male and two-female dancers as well as games involving audience participation. “It is a fun night out where you can take your boyfriend or girlfriend, or your husband and wife,” John said. “People are inquisitive and this way the guys and girls can go out and have a drink and a bit of perve before going home happy together. “Mind you, it is not a show for the fainthearted. “If you don’t want to see anything a little provocative, then you should probably stay at home. “At the same time, we do leave something up to the imagination, it is not a sleaze-fest. Yet Body Heat dancers don’t always leave it up to the audience’s imagination. John said one of the loudest cheers in Body Heat was when a male dancer forgot to put on his G-string and ripped off his pants during the routine only to be left stark-naked on the stage. “I asked him what he was thinking,” John said. The guy, who was new to dancing at the time, replied that he had been so nervous before the show he forgot to don his undies. But before Karratha’s ladies get too excited, John said these kinds of wardrobe malfunctions have been rare in the 15-years since Body Heat first flickered to life in a Sydney gym. Back then a group of workout buddies struck upon the idea that their washboard abs and hulking biceps might have the useful side-benefit of entertaining auditoriums of screaming women. Their early success led the Sydney-based crew to perform all over Australia, and more recently to hold shows with a mix of male and female dancers. So what is their secret to being a star dancer? “Costume, movement and personality,” John said. “You have to be able to groove, you have to be able to shake that body. “We’ve got an African-American guy coming to Karratha – he can move. “They also call him Horse.” John added that the Body Heat women were equally hot prospects. To make it into the show, they need to spend “an hour every second day in the gym” while “an hour of cardio everyday” is compulsory. And which crowd is the wildest at a Body Heat show – a hen’s night or a bunch of footballers on an end of season trip? “Hen’s nights are definitely wilder,” John said. “The girls are more hands-on.”

Setting Sons all over the Pilbara By Tamara Binamat There’s a little bit of Rolling Stones, Steve Miller Band and Pink Floyd in the Pilbara, and there’s a lot of INXS. Karratha local Juz Clark has drummed with the great Australian rock band INXS, the Divinyls and Hoodoo Gurus and is now part of Karratha-based rock band Setting Sons. The band formed about eight months ago, and with all members coming from musical backgrounds, its clear these Pilbara blokes are onto great things. Daz Phegan is lead vocalist and plays guitar. His father is an accomplished saxophonist on the eastern coast. Juz Clark played drums with the aforementioned Australian rock legends and now drums and writes for Setting Sons. Henry, 16-years-old, is one of the best guitarists getting around, in Daz’s musical opinion, and started playing as an 8-yearold. George Kelly on bass, is not just a truck driver, he also brings a lot of performance experience. Daz describes his music as a bit of pub rock and a bit of blues. You can expect to hear George Thorogood, Lynyrd Skynyrd and bluesy Beatles. The group is working on writing and
recording their own originals too. “We’re sort of still working on them as far as getting our own sound going to ensure that when we start introducing our own songs it’s listenable” Phegan said. “The inspiration is probably life experience,” he said. “It gives you that really gritty take on life and what’s going on.” It seems Setting Sons are also drawing inspiration from our beautiful North West. Henry, the lead guitarist has written an instrumental song, titled Pilbara. “All those inspirations help us do what we do,” said Phegan. The inspiration from the landscape is just the beginning, Phegan and his partner purchased the Hamersley Iron bus made famous in the Red Dog movie, and plan to use it as a tour bus. “We travel around in that and get a fair bit of inspiration, well that and an esky!” said Phegan. The Red Dog bus will eventually become the Setting Sons tour bus. If you want to see these lads play, you’ll find them performing at Pier Hotel in Port Hedland on Saturday October 13 kicking off at 8pm. “Were going to rock it out until midnight,” added Phegan.

Featuring a selection of Australia’s finest musicians performing in some of the country’s most picturesque settings Sounds Outback (…to Reef) is set to become an iconic, annual event. Sponsors include the Shire of Exmouth and Gascoyne Development Commission. The Festival’s showcase event – a concert under the stars set against the stunning sculptural backdrop of Shothole Canyon – is presented in association with the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC). Chelsea Gordon, DEC’s Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area Program Manager said, “The Ningaloo Coast received World Heritage listing on June 24 2011 in recognition of its outstanding natural beauty and biological diversity.
There are three components to the regional program: Community Residency (3 – 5 October) Leading Australian composer, violinist Jon Rose, will lead a community project based around his world-renowned Bowed Fence work. This collaboration with local community will be aired during the first event of the Festival. Jon Rose is the current winner of the Australia Council’s Don Banks Award. Artists delight in what people have ‘found’ in Wickham During a 10 day residency from September 20 to 30 Sohan and Carol have delighted participants with their sand drawing artworks and photographic portrait sessions in Wickham.

future and the possibilities for public art in the town. Ms Igglesden has enjoyed chatting to community members about what public art means to them. ”Quality public art with integrity responds to its surroundings and can be an effective mirror for the aspirations and pride within a community,” he said. “It doesn’t have to just be about a monument plonked in the middle of a town square – there are many other fun and unique ways to include art in the public space and create a beautiful place to live.” A process of education associated with what public art can do and what it can mean to people has been an integral part of the project. The artists worked with the community to develop their thinking around public art and encouraged them to explore what they would like to say, share or celebrate about Wickham. Mr Hayes and Ms Igglesden will now
return to their own places of work to develop imagery and animations for a large-scale multi media public art showcase presentation, to be shown to the community on Friday October 19 at the Wickham Picture Gardens and be projected onto the Wickham water tank. Mr Hayes is already looking forward to the trip back to town. “We can’t wait to get back to Wickham in October to show everyone what they have found – Wickham watch this space!” The event is free and all members of the public are invited to come along from 6pm to 8:30pm. It will broaden community perceptions around public art, showcase the identity of Wickham and provide the audience with an opportunity to witness contemporary, challenging and exciting public art on a large scale and of a nature not previously witnessed in the region.

Pilbara development commission strengthened Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls has announced initiatives to strengthen the role and responsibility of the Pilbara development commission. From October 26, 2012 the Pilbara Cities Office will be transferred from the Department of Regional Development and Lands (RDL) to the Pilbara Development Commission (PDC). Mr Grylls said having one entity managing portfolio programs relating to the respective regions would provide better co-ordination, efficiencies and delivery across Government. “The transfer will build greater local capacity and also allow the potential to recruit and maintain high level leadership and Government capability in each region, particularly in the critical Pilbara region,” he said.
The PDC will be responsible for recommending strategic projects for State Government Royalties for Regions funding to the Minister and Cabinet as well as monitoring the delivery of funded projects. The Pilbara Cities Office is currently coordinating the implementation of more than $1billion in Royalties for Regions funds with relevant local and State Government agencies across the key focus areas, including infrastructure co-ordination, land availability and development, community projects, and engagement and economic diversification. “I commend the dedicated staff on their efforts to make the vision a reality and look forward to continuing to work with them and the commissions to maintain the successful Royalties for Regions program,” the Minister said.
Fortescue commissions second iron ore processor at Christmas Creek Fortescue has put first ore through its second ore processing facility at its Christmas Creek mine. It comes only a week after the miner began running its second train unloader in Port Hedland. According to Fortescue the second ore processing facility, constructed by Minerals Resources’ subsidiary Crushing Services International, has only taken 14 months to complete. “Once fully commissioned it will lift capacity of the mine to more than 50 mtpa and the combined output of Christmas Creek and the nearby Cloudbreak mine to 95 mtpa by the end of the year,” Fortescue stated. Mineral Resources said that construction of the plant, which began in September last year, is expected to reach full production capacity within three months.
The company added “the Christmas Creek circuit has been designed to handle and process a range of ore feed from the Chichester Ranges tenements including the wet, below the water table ore which requires specific scrubbing and de-sanding process components. As part of the mine’s expansion, it has also completed a number of additional infrastructure projects such as doubling the capacity of the operations village, building a remote crushing hub and 6.3 km overland conveyor, a new airstrip, and expanding its power plant. The total workforce at the site is expected to be around 2300. This latest development comes only days after it awarded Leighton a $1.5 billion mining contract for its operations at its Firetail development. Source: Australian Mining www.miningaustralia.com.au

TAX 2012
Make sure you lodge on time With only a month left until the end of tax time, time is running out to lodge your tax return if you are not using a registered tax agent. Tax Commissioner Michael D’Ascenzo said the most convenient way to lodge your tax return is online using e-tax. “E-tax allows you to save time and avoid making mistakes by downloading your information from employers, banks, Government agencies and health funds, into your tax return,” Mr D’Ascenzo said. “All you need to do is check the information and add any missing details. “So far this year over 1.8 million people have taken advantage of e-tax.” Additional benefits of using e-tax include built-in checks and calculators that help you get it right, you do not have to complete it in one go - you can save it and come back later, you can print a copy for your records, you will receive instant confirmation when you lodge and most refunds will issue in 12 business days or less. E-tax is available to download for free from www.ato.gov.au/etax. If you are planning to use a tax agent for the first time or a different tax agent to last year, you need to contact them before October 31. Visit www.tpb.gov.au to check that your tax agent is registered. “It is also important that you only claim what you are entitled to,” Mr D’Ascenzo said.
“So far the ATO has stopped over 61,000 income tax returns suspected of being fraudulent or of containing incorrect claims. “These individuals will need to provide documentation to substantiate their claims.” Be aware of tax scams “This tax time we have seen a variety of scams that try to trick individuals into providing their personal details and pay money. Scammers use phone calls, letters, text messages, emails, bogus websites and even fake job advertisements,” Mr D’Ascenzo said. “If you receive such an approach be cautious and do not provide any personal or financial details. “The ATO will never ask you to pay money to receive your tax refund or any special government payment.” For examples of some recent taxrelated scams and information on how you can protect yourself or report suspected scams, view online security information on the ATO website. Online assistance The ATO’s website www.ato.gov.au provides a wealth of information that can help you when completing your tax return. “The earlier you speak to us, the sooner we can help,” Mr D’Ascenzo said.

Six new riders lined up to make 31 on the start line. Elite rider Jason Attard flatted shortly after the start and opted to become a vocal spectator. Pilbara AFL Women Clash at Kevin Richards By Clint Degebrodt V Swans Regional Development Manager The Pilbara AFL Womens program hosted it’s full field full AFL rules match of the spring season on Sunday night with North Pilbara Football League umpire ‘Fabulous’ Phil Davies in charge. NPFL players Cam Ling and Michael James taking charge of the Blue Blazers and Black Ducks respectively. There were outstanding performances from players on both the Black Ducks and the Blue Blazers teams who were brilliantly led by marquee players Daneele Dunham and Storm Ferrier. The match started with the Blazers storming forward through Ferrier, Giselle Degebrodt and Kim Wellington working the clearances and first gamer Keah Hawk bagging a goal with her first kick and adding her second very soon after. Dunham then got up and going and was joined by Chantel Westley winning on her wing and the Ducks moved the ball forward with Dunham’s hard running resulting in a goal and at the siren blast the Blazers lead the Ducks 2. 1 (13) to 1.2 (8). The second quarter was tougher as the Ducks worked to capitalise on the two-goal breeze. It was Josie Olejko who hit the scoreboard for the Ducks after a three-bounce run and long kick resulted in a goal. Mikayla Smith answered immediately with a smart snap around her body helping the Blazers keep their buffer.
The first half finished with fierce tackling and hard running ensuring neither side scored again in the tight tussle. The Blue Blazers came out firing in the third with the move of Ally Richards into the ruck proving a master stroke as she dominated the centre combining with Degebrodt to get the ball into 50 where Ferrier gathered the ball drawing her player and providing a clever dish which had Hawk kicking her third. Defence was needed by the Black Ducks and Maria Cosmos responded restricting the influence of the dangerous Richards while Maggie Tittums worked well with Bronte Pember to sure up the back half. The rest of the quarter was an arm wrestle between half back lines, the Black Ducks didn’t score and the match turned to the last with the score 4. 5 (29) to 2.2 (14) in the Blue Blazers favour. Ducks coach James delivered one of the all time great three quarter time addresses where he demanded the ball be moved forward at all costs and implored his team to believe in the game plan and each other. Coach Ling, much calmer, asked for composure and ball control to combat the influence of the breeze. Jacinta and Bronte got on the end of some great ruck work from Dunham, with a run from Westley and fierce defensive pressure including some bone crunching tackling from Shari and clever hands from Hannah Featherstone. It resisted the Ducks flood
but the Ducks worked hard to create a turn over close to goal and Dunham’s soccer off the ground struck home to move the Ducks within nine points. Cosmos continued to toil hard as did Bianca Crake and once again the ball entered the Ducks forward 50 from the centre. But the Blazers repelled the constant barrage of entries before Jacinta Pember broke the lines to get the ball to Dunham and on to Ash Degebrodt who kicked truly. The game was three points before two missed shots from the Blazers got the margin out to five. Once again the Ducks surged forward and with 50 seconds left in the match a wayward snap brought a minor score and handed the Blazers the kick in. The full field press employed by the Ducks saw every player in the forward half for the kick in which was marked by the tireless Ducks skipper Daneele Dunham as the siren sounded. Five points behind and 45 metres out on a 45 degree angle the kick would see her team home for a exceptional come from behind victory but it was not to be as the kick fell short and was punched away by the Blazers defenders. In the end it was the Blazers 4.7 (31) to the Ducks 4.2 (26) with best players for the winners including Ally Richards, Kim Storm Ferrier, Mikayla Smith and Keah Hawks. Daneele Dunham, Maria Cosmos, Chantel Westley, Bronte and Josie Olejko stood out for the Black Ducks.

North West’s biggest recreation precinct named By Tamara Binamat Council has officially named Karratha’s highly anticipated entertainment precinct. The venue, set to become the Pilbara’s premier indoor sports and aquatic centre, has been named Karratha Leisureplex. The Shire of Roebourne put a call out to the community last year for naming suggestions. These were collated and reviewed by the Project Reference Group as well as a marketing firm. Roebourne Shire Council president Fiona White-Hartig said after utilising a combination of the suggested names, Council decided on Karratha Leisureplex. “We put a call out to the community in November last year for naming suggestions,” White-Hartig said.
“We had a great response from the community and a real variety of creative submissions. “We then approached a marketing firm to provide a final recommendation for Council. “It was a long process, but I’m so pleased with the final outcome and I’m confident this was the right decision.“ The Karratha Leisureplex is a first-class facility filled with modern equipment and technology, with the name chosen to reflect that. “It will also be the biggest recreation precinct north of the 26th parallel, so I think the word Leisureplex is all encompassing and captures the enormity of the facility,” White-Hartig said. Construction is well underway with the roof of
the indoor sports centre under construction and the construction of the outdoor court shade structures set to commence in the coming weeks. The construction of the main pool area is also progressing well with the adjacent leisure pool also under construction. A brand and logo is currently being created for the Karratha Leisureplex. “This will be a first-class, modern facility and we hope the brand will reflect this,” said White-Hartig. “The completion of this project will also be a huge step towards the transformation of Karratha from a mining town to a vibrant regional city, so in some respects it marks new beginnings for our community.“
