Gorge platform used for first time in Karijini vertical rescue By Tamara Binamat Although rescues in Karijini are less frequent this tourist season, incidents are so common the national park has built a rescue platform at Weano Gorge, used for the first time last weekend to rescue a 58-year-old woman after she suffered a suspected broken ankle. Team leader for vertical rescue, Adrian Tate of Newman SES, who led the rescue, said many of the gorges at Karijini are unable to be exited with such an injury, requiring SES crews from Tom Price and Newman to conduct an aerial lift. “We had to go out and set up a rope system and lift her out of the gorge,” said Tate. “We sent out an escort and they strapped the patient in [a stretcher] and lifted her out up the cliff face.” The woman, believed to be from the South-West, slipped on mossy rocks, causing the injury. “The gorges are very slippery,” said Tate. “This lady wasn’t really doing anything wrong but there’s a lot of people that go out there that could take a bit more notice of the ranges and the signs.” The woman was taken to Tom Price Hospital for treatment.
The rescue crew consisted of about 13 SES workers, seven from Tom Price and five from Newman. “You need about eight [staff] to do a vertical rescue and then you need extra help because you have to lift them out with the rope system,” said Tate. Tate said this is the first vertical lift his team has operated this year at Karijini, when normally he estimates about five of these rescues would have taken place this far into tourist season. Tate has been an SES volunteer for eight years and has conducted around 40 vertical lifts. “We’ve had a lot of issues in the past, now the park has built a platform for us there to do rescues from and it was the first time we used it yesterday,” said Tate. “It made the rescue a lot quicker and smoother. “They’ve built anchors out there and everything at some of the lift points.” The platform was installed earlier this year and funded by Karijini National Park, which sees over 100,000 tourists every year.

Top defence force chief to visit the Pilbara The vice chief of the Defence Force Air Marshal Alan Binskin AO will tour the North West in November to assess defence in the area. Air Marshal Alan Binskin will travel to the Pilbara after first attending a meeting of the chiefs of staff committee in Perth. The Perth meeting will involve discussions with business leaders from
the Pilbara. Alan Eggleston, the Liberal Senator for Western Australia, welcomed the visit by Air Marshal Binskin. “Although it is unfortunate that the committee will not be able to tour the region, the Vice Chief’s visit will be a step in the right direction in their assessment of support operations,” Senator Eggleston said.
“It has taken a long time for the ADF to recognise that its current protection of Western Australia’s North West is lacking, with ADF Chief General Hurley admitting during May [Senate] Estimates that their ‘attention had been elsewhere over the last decade’.” “I look forward to their determination of future capabilities in the region.”

Another car rollover claims life By Tamara Binamat In another devastating motor vehicle accident in the Pilbara, a single car rollover has claimed the life of a 48-year-old man, believed to be from Broome. A police spokesperson said the accident occurred on the North West coastal Highway 13 kilometres south
of Onslow road about 5:30am Saturday October 20. The man was driving a Ford Falcon utility travelling north on the highway when police believe he approached a right-hand bend and failed to negotiate the turn, causing the vehicle to leave the road and roll over several times. It appears the man was not wearing a seatbelt.
EAST PILBARA SHIRE UPDATE Welcome to the heart of the Pilbara
President Message
Doggie Bag Dispenser
Thank you for reading the latest update from the Shire of East Pilbara.
In the previous edition of the Shire News Column you may recall President Craigie passing on a message from our rangers for dog walkers to pick up after their dogs. Well we are pleased to say that the Shire has recently installed a dog waste bag dispenser in the vicinity of the Junior Sports Complex. Now, there can be no more excuses! Thanks from all of us for helping beat this unpleasant problem!
It’s been a busy month at the Shire culminating in a visit from the Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls who officially opened the Junior Sports Pavilion and lighting upgrade at Newman’s largest sporting area, the Capricorn Sporting Precinct. So far the Shire of East Pilbara has provided $2 million for the Capricorn Sporting Precinct which has been a fantastic investment for our sports loving community in Newman. The State Government and BHP Billiton have also provided $1.5 million and $1.6 million respectively and it is always a pleasure partnering with them in such a rewarding project.
Newman Aquatic Centre News
It is also important to provide an update on the commencement paid parking at Newman Airport. Technical issues that have caused the delay are progressing and being worked through. Parking will be free of charge until these are completely resolved. Once a date is known there will be a two week advertising period to advise customers of the start date.
n Cutting the ribbon at the opening of the Junior Sports Pavillion is Alex Seed from BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Shire President Lynne Craigie, Junior T-Ball players Harrison Parsons, Anna Retallack and Deegan Smith and Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls.
As the hot summer months edge closer, I remind residents to make sure their homes and properties an adequately prepared in the event of a fire hazard. If you require more information about fire safety please visit our website www.eastpilbara.wa.gov.au.

photographing wildlife By Jenny Fox I’ve always had an appreciation of people who photograph wildlife especially those that are really good and have made a living from it. Many hours are spent trying to get just that one shot (or frame) that will show the animal at its best within its habitat. These are dedicated specialist photographers. Now I don’t consider myself a photographer as such, let alone a ‘wildlife photographer’ but I can point and click on a subject to record it for my own use, and one such occasion presented itself recently when I borrowed a couple of little Scout Guard outdoor cameras from friends to capture the goings on in my front yard during the night. These little cameras are small motion activated cameras that are used for wildlife surveillance or farm security. My friends are part of the Nickol Bay Nat’s group and

had been out to the Cossack area filming hopping mice during the night then did a little presentation to the group about these very cute little rodents. The cameras will photograph still or videos and are infrared for night filming. My yard is a bit of a thoroughfare and gets a lot of euro activity during the night and from the assortment of different sized scats and knocked over pot plants I thought the cameras would show just what goes on under the cover of darkness.
that of an animal was filmed. I was getting frustrated as I was still finding fresh poo, some even right behind where the camera was sitting so knew there was still movement happening but not where I wanted it. I had to laugh at myself at this point and take a moment to appreciate just how tricky it is to photograph wildlife, regardless of what type of camera you are using. They never do what you want them to do and I thought of the saying ‘never work with animals or children’.
Over the following nights I managed to get a few shots of backs, bums, blurred vision and still nothing of quality. Tuesday night the wind had dropped off and the moon was out. I had a good feeling as this is the type of night that euro activity is increased. Sure enough I got a clear video of a mother with a joey in her pouch drinking from the trough and some clear photos of a euro feeding along the side fence and I’m reminded (once again) that perseverance is the key to this type of thing, and lots and lots of patience.

New behaviour insights on the world’s biggest fish Whale sharks, the world’s biggest fish, can dive to chilly waters hundreds of metres deep but they need to return to the surface to warm up, according to a new study led by researchers from The University of Western Australia’s Oceans Institute.

Lead researcher Dr Michele Thums said the findings delivered new insights into the littleknown behaviour of these gentle giants of the sea. For instance, whale sharks have been known to undertake regular dives to around 100 metres and then return to the surface relatively quickly, the socalled “bounce” or “yo-yo” dives. But the research team, including UWA Adjunct Professor Dr Mark Meekan of the Australian Institute of Marine Research, discovered that whale sharks could also undertake very long, deep dives lasting more than two hours.
“When we looked at our data, we found that the whale sharks spent regular intervals at the surface between diving bouts,” Dr Thums said. “This pattern of returning to the surface looked similar to the patterns seen in air-breathing marine animals, so we were curious as to why fish that do not breathe air would do it.” The study involved four whale sharks: three at Ningaloo Reef off the North West coast and one at Christmas Island. The sharks were tagged with time-depth recorders that also recorded water temperatures. The researchers found that after the deepest and coldest dives – an average 340 metres deep with temperatures of about 14 degrees Celsius – the sharks spent the longest time at the surface, an average of 145 minutes. Dr Thums concluded they
“Whale sharks, like many other fish are ectothermic, which means that their body temperature is similar to the surrounding water temperature and they can’t regulate their body temperature through internal physiological processes,” Dr Thums said. “So, behavioural mechanisms such as spending time in the warmer surface waters are needed to warm them, similar to a reptile basking in the sun to warm up and then moving under a rock once sufficiently warmed.” Dr Thums said a better understanding of the whale sharks’ behaviour would help in developing effective conservation and management strategies, as well as predicting responses to environmental changes.
Council approves Tom Price Flying Doctor’s airstrip By Ben Leahy
Community Update Electrical contractors are now connecting houses in Millars Well to the underground network. Prior to connection, and in accordance with Electricity Safety Regulations, all electrical wiring must be inspected to ensure it complies with safety standards. Prior to the inspection taking place, a letter drop will be made in your street to advise that an inspection of your home will be required in approximately two weeks time. At the time of inspection, an electrical contractor will knock on your door and ask if it is a convenient time for them to inspect your house. If there is no fault found, the inspection should take approximately one hour. In the event that the inspectors find any wiring or electrical connections that do not comply with safety standards, Horizon Power is required by law to disconnect power to the affected circuits. The customer is required to contact a licensed electrician to rectify the fault and reconnect power. In some cases, the fault may be rectified on the spot if it is isolated to a faulty appliance. The cost of repairing the fault and reconnection is the responsibility of the property owner.

do so to regulate their body temperature – in effect, to warm up after spending time in the deeper, colder parts of the sea.
Tom Price resident Steve Moule has welcomed the local council’s decision to support the construction of a Royal Flying Doctor Service airstrip in the town. Mr Moule, the president of St John’s Ambulance in Tom Price has been campaigning for the airstrip for the past three years. But in August, the Shire of Ashburton Council voted against the project because they did not want to own and operate the airstrip. However, after Mr Moule and other Tom Price residents presented a petition in October with almost 2,000 signatures calling for the airstrip to be built, the Council reversed its decision. Mr Moule said common sense had prevailed. “After all, we are not talking about a nicety around town, we are talking about an essential service,” he said. “[The RFDS airstrip] has to be in place for the safety, equality and progress of the town. The Council decision comes as RFDS evacuations have been increasing. According to Mr Moule, RFDS evacuations have quadrupled from 48-odd to approximately 170 per year in the six years he has volunteered for St John’s in Tom Price. Jeff Breen, the Shire of Ashburton’s chief executive officer, said the Council took note of the community’s wishes. “It was democracy at work,” Mr Breen said. “I think the Council realised that this was something strongly supported by the community. Mr Breen is now seeking funding for the airport, which is estimated to cost $4.4 million. Mr Breen said the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program and resource companies were likely to back the idea.
“We are formally approaching the government and the resource sector [to meet] both the construction and the operating costs,” Mr Breen said. “I think the numbers speak for themselves, the numbers of people medically evacuated and how it is increasing – much of that is based on the increase [in population due to] exploration and mining in the area,” Mr Breen said. He also said the RFDS strip would likely be located on land that Rio Tinto had previously earmarked for a company airport, before the resource giant scrapped the idea following the global financial crisis hit in 2008. “There has been quite a bit of work done in co-operation with Rio Tinto on where the airport site might be and the sharing of information on previous airport designs – so a lot of background work has been done.” But Mr Breen did dispute earlier claims that Mr Moule had secured funding for the project, saying there was a difference between actually securing concrete funding and gaining informal commitments. Mr Breen also said the airport’s estimated annual operating costs of $100,000 were higher than estimates given by Mr Moule. “That is an annualised operating cost, so it is not going to cost you $100,000 every year,” Mr Breen said. “It is going to cost about half that each year, but in about 10 or 15 years time, the $50,000 you put away annually catches up with you and you will have to [spend it to] reseal the runway. But regardless of costing estimates, St John volunteer Mr Moule is keen on having a quiet beer to celebrate the decision – that is when he can get a spare moment. “I can’t drink too much because I am on call [for St John’s] twentyfour-seven,” he said. “But I will get an opportunity one of these days.”

• Hedland residents clean up rubbish at Tichella
Hooligan behaviour forces shutdown of popular campgrounds By Ben Leahy Popular camping spots, Tichella and Condon on DeGrey Station north of Port Hedland, have been closed to the public. Narelle Bettini, owner of DeGrey Station, wrote on Facebook that damage to station property had left them no choice but to close public access to the camp grounds. “The decision has been made by us, the lease holders and the traditional owners due to the appauling (sic) condition of the area”. Visitors to Tichella and Condon have not only allegedly littered the campgrounds and damaged the surrounding environment but also reportedly shot cattle on the property
and started wildfires. Pip Short, the program coordinator at Care for Hedland Environmental Association, was recently involved in a community clean up at Tichella Beach and said she was shocked and upset at the disregard shown by campers for the environment and private property. Short said the owners were within their rights according to the Land Administration Act to block access to the sites if the public affect pastoral operations and cause damage to the environment. She is asking for locals to respect the DeGrey Station owner’s wishes and remain off the property until further notice is given.

New housing for Coral Bay seasonal workers Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls has officially opened the $17.375 million State Government Royalties for Regions-funded Coral Bay Service Workers Accommodation (SWA). The project will provide 37 houses for up to 75 workers in the Coral Bay area and take pressure off the town’s limited choice of accommodation. Mr Grylls said Coral Bay needed suitable staff accommodation to house seasonal workers, to help the future expansion of its tourism and permanent facilities. “In the past, workers had no choice but to stay in tourist premises such as caravan parks and resort grounds, which are unsuitable and can be overcrowded,” he said. “This project has provided more accommodation options for workers and will take the pressure off accommodation designed for tourists to the area. “To attract and retain staff, particularly in the peak tourism season, it is vital to provide
seasonal workers with affordable, quality accommodation. “This initiative will benefit Coral Bay’s economy and have positive effects on the wider community, and importantly will help to keep accommodation rents in the town affordable.” The Minister said SWA was a partnership between the State Government; the Baiyungu Aboriginal Corporation (BAC); and National Lifestyle Villages (NLV), which constructed the village. Curnow Group has been contracted for internal and external project works and has engaged the BAC in the civil works through staffing and the hire of equipment. Mr Grylls said the SWA had provided employment opportunities for the local Aboriginal community during construction. Additional involvement of the Aboriginal community in the management of the facility would continue as part of the Aboriginal Participation Program signed with NLV.

Fears over oil exploration near Ningaloo Reef By Ben Leahy
north of Ningaloo, but this plan by BHP
The World Wildlife Fund has called on the Government to outline a long-term vision to protect Ningaloo Reef after BHP Billiton revealed plans to hunt for oil close to the World Heritage listed marine-park. BHP Billiton is currently seeking Federal Government approval to conduct seismic tests in search of oil as close as five kilometres from the reef. But WWF-Australia director Paul Gamblin said the impact on Ningaloo Reef is not properly understood. “There is a lack of certainty around all of this and we are calling on Governments to create areas or safety zones around places like Ningaloo, the Rowley Shoals [off the Broome coast] and other major areas of concern.” Ningaloo Reef was granted World Heritage status less than 18 months ago but that has not stopped a number of resource companies eyeing oil and gas reserves off the Exmouth coast. This week, Royal Dutch Shell began drilling for oil less than 50 kilometres from the reef. WWF’s Gamblin said it was alarming that Ningaloo seems to be becoming an oil and gas province.

A combined Soroptomist market and P&C fete was held at the grounds of the Millars Well Primary School on Sunday October 21. Despite the hot weather there was a good turn out with plenty for all ages to enjoy. There were a variety of stalls run by the kids from MWPS selling things from lollies to plants. Students with their teachers organised fishing games, spider drinks, face painting and much more! Performances took place from Dance FX and ACKRO and there were also busking performances from the kids from MWPS. There were rides and a sausage
sizzle where cool drinks were very popular throughout the day. A car wash was held to raise funds for the Karratha Amateur Swim club, though most kids involved seemed to “accidently” manage to get themselves completely soaked in the process! The day wound up with an interesting pet show, which pitted a fish and a chook against several dogs and a tiger called Humphrey who looked suspiciously like a labrador with freshly painted stripes. Key Spot kindly donated the medallions and all the funds raised from the pet show were donated to SAFE. All in all it was a successful, fun community day, which raised funds to resource our school.

Local students and families celebrate Walk to School Day
Photos courtesy Tamara Binamat
The State’s major walking campaign, Walk Over October, encourages families to take a 10 minute walk instead of using the car to make short trips to the shops, to drop children at school or to get to public transport. W e d n e s d a y October 24 marked Walk to School Day, encouraging students to walk or ride their bike to school. Millars Well Primary School in Karratha held a number of activities for kids before school, including giveaways and fresh fruit platters. Izzy the Dinosaur also made an appearance, which the children applauded loudly. Heart Foundation Cardiovascular Health
Director Trevor Shilton said most people could walk the distance of these short car trips in about 10 minutes. “If adults walked for 10 minutes several times a day, they would achieve the 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity recommended by the Heart Foundation for their health,” Mr Shilton said. Walk Over October calls on all to walk more for their health and well-being, to ease traffic congestion and for environmental benefits. Approximately 46,000 West Australians from schools, community groups and workplaces will participate in Walk Over October events.

Rio Tinto’s first employee moved into Karratha’s Pelago West apartments last Saturday October 20. Unlike the typical house and yard available to most Rio Tinto employees, Pelago Apartments offer a resort lifestyle with a 25-metre swimming pool, spa, sauna, gymnasium, barbecue areas and a children’s playground. Rio Tinto purchased 19 apartments in Pelago West as part of its commitment to enhancing life in Karratha by building a local workforce for its coastal operations. Nardia Fallon, who works as a train examiner for Rio Tinto’s Rail division at 7 Mile, said she couldn’t wait to feel at home in Pelago. “I feel very fortunate to have this available to me,” Nadia said. “It is a safe, modern and comfortable apartment with great views over the Burrup Peninsula. Nardia, who joined Rio 15-months ago, moved into Pelago with her daughter after living in a shared housing arrangement, and she said she is thrilled with the resort lifestyle and security in her new accommodation.
“I will be making the most of these great apartment facilities and have the local shops at my fingertips, it’s really convenient,” Nadia said. “What’s more, my sevenyear-old daughter loves baking cakes and the apartment block, in addition to our apartment kitchen, has a communal kitchen where she is looking forward to showcasing her cooking flair.” Alistair Baron, the general manager accommodation and towns operations at Rio handed Nadia the keys to her new home. “These apartments give Rio Tinto the opportunity to cater for the different housing needs of our workforce. “Not everyone needs room for a boat and a yard for a dog, and the resort lifestyle has certainly been a selling point,” Alistair said. Rio Tinto’s Pilbara residential portfolio includes more than 3000 dwellings in Karratha, Dampier, Wickham, Tom Price, Paraburdoo and Pannawonica. It is also planning to acquire a further 230 new houses and units in the next few years.

By Ben Leahy Rio Tinto held its annual Tom Price and Paraburdoo picnic days over the weekend beginning Friday October 19, and there were plenty of new attractions to keep youngsters – and even big kids – happy. One of the most popular new games this year was laser combat in which kids were armed with laser guns and sent into a small field to shoot each other up. Nigel Seymour, the owner of Perth-based LaserCorps, said he was flat out keeping up with demand across the weekend. “There were long queues and then many of the kids would come straight out
and rejoin the queues, ready to play another round,” Nigel said. Laser combat works by having players fire a harmless infrared beam at each other similar to that used in a TV remote control. There are no projectiles as in paintball, making the experience a bit like playing a computer game, only outdoors, according to Nigel. “We had a few kids so impressed with the game, they even went out and got their friends together and formed teams and came back,” Nigel said. “You didn’t have to have teams but these guys cottoned onto it.”
“A few worked out team tactics, such as splitting up and pinning the enemy down in between them [with laser fire]. It wasn’t just the kids either, Nigel said there were more than a few dads hooked on the game. Overall, Nigel said the Rio Tinto picnic days were great community events, and he enjoyed meeting the friendly locals. He also said the Tom Price and Paraburdoo kids showed natural comradery, such as when one nine-year old soldier spoke solemnly to his friend before commencing combat: “You watch my back, and I’ll watch yours,” he said.

“RELAX BY THE POOL”
Port Hedland this month takes on eight Western Australian communities for the honour of being crowned the State’s tidiest town. Environment Minister Bill Marmion will announce the 2012 Tidy Towns – Sustainable Communities award winner at a gala event in Fremantle on November 16. Hedland will need to beat out competition from other finalists, including Walpole, Mingenew, Yiyili, West Arthur, Quairading, Esperance and Southern Cross. Keep Australia Beautiful WA Chair Mel Hay said the program motivated communities to take action and gave people a sense of achievement. “It is a grassroots program that is good for the environment, communities and individuals,” he said. “Working together constructively gives people a great sense of pride in their town and the projects can be a catalyst for change, with long-term benefits for
the community. “The State awards event is [a] celebration of their commitment and achievements, which are always nothing short of inspiring.” There will be eight awards presented at the event according to the following categories; Community Action and Partnerships; General Appearance; Energy Innovation; Natural Environment Conservation; Young Legends; Water Conservation; Heritage and Culture; and Waste Management and Litter Prevention. In addition to the overall winner, Hedland will be in the running to win the Heritage and Culture, Natural Environment Conservation and Young Legends awards. The Keep Australia Beautiful Council WA runs the Tidy Towns – Sustainable Communities awards with the Department of Environment and Conservation providing administrative, logistical and policy support.

Helping Indigenous kids to follow their dreams By Ben Leahy Karratha and Roebourne residents will celebrate 15 years of helping Indigenous students achieve success at school this Wednesday November 1 at a family event at the Frank Butler Community Centre. The fun day and barbecue will mark the fifteenth anniversary of the Graham Polly Farmer Foundation’s Follow Your Dream program, run locally by the Gumala Mirnuwarni Education Project. As of 2010, the program had helped 67 Indigenous kids from Karratha and Roebourne, not only finish their secondary schooling, but also find jobs and traineeships and even begin university studies. When it first began in 1997, not even a single student from Roebourne had completed their Year 12 studies. Clinton Walker, founder of the Gurrgura cultural awareness training company, was among the first students in the Follow Your Dream program in 1997. “It definitely helped me to finish Year 12, I was actually the first boy from Roebourne to complete Year 12,” Clinton said. The foundation was founded when former Prime Minister Bob Hawke’s son Stephen asked famous Indigenous footballer Graham Polly Farmer if he could write a biography about him. But Polly Farmer
only agreed to the biography on the condition that Stephen start a foundation to help young Aboriginal people. That led Stephen to approach public figures, such as former Liberal Party Senator the Honourable Fred Chaney and Dr Ron Evans. Dr Evans said it became clear early on that helping Indigenous kids complete their education would be the foundation’s key goal. “We thought we’d give a prize to an Aboriginal student graduating in the north, the mid west and the south west; maybe one boy and one girl,” Dr Evans wrote in a 2010 foundation report. “You know what, there weren’t any. So right then we knew what our job was; to try and get Indigenous kids on to Year 12 and then into university.” The program quickly found support in Karratha and Roebourne, with Gurrgura’s Clinton Walker among the first intake of students. “Growing up in Roebourne we never had a lot, we were pretty poor,” Clinton said. “We never had computers, so it was a huge help having tutors and mentors to help you out. Clinton said the tutor program was especially inspiring with former Shire of Roebourne President Brad Snell taking him under his wing.

“He was a huge influence on me,” Clinton said. “He knew I had a lot of potential and so he helped me out a lot. “He would ensure I always had something to eat in school, often give me a lift to places that I needed to be and take me down to the shops to buy my school bags and equipment. “He helped a lot of the other kids in the program as well, his input was crucial to many kids succeeding. Another part of the program involved helping to broaden the horizons of Indigenous kids. “Every couple of months they would take us down to Perth to visit other schools and universities to learn what opportunities there are outside of the Pilbara,” Clinton said. The program also helped Clinton secure his first job after Year 12, a position he needed to help support his newly born first child.
“Brad Snell and others there helped me do mock interviews and apply for apprenticeships and traineeships with Rio,” Clinton said. Clinton was successful with his application and went on to spend eight years at Rio Tinto before moving to Woodside and now his own business called Gurrgura. Gurrgura is a family business and a virtual role call of graduates from the Follow Your Dream program. Not only is his sister a university graduate in business administration, but his other business partner Jolleen Hicks is a qualified lawyer. The business also employs a bunch of Roebourne locals, who help run cultural awareness programs that provide locals with an understanding of the customs and cultures of the Ngarluma traditional owners of the land. Roebourne Airstrip to open in early 2013 By Ben Leahy The Shire of Roebourne expects work to remove asbestos contamination from the Roebourne Airstrip to begin in November after awarding the project tender to Prime Environmental Services. Rio Tinto will fund the asbestos remediation works, which the Shire hopes can be completed for less than $1 million. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig said the Roebourne Airstrip would help give Roebourne, Wickham and Point Samson residents access to leisure and critical services. “Remediation works at Roebourne Airstrip are being undertaken to enable current users including Royal Flying Doctor Service and Wickham Skydivers to relocate to the airstrip,” Ms White-Hartig said The old Roebourne Airstrip is being reopened after resource giant Rio Tinto closed its nearby Wickham Airport in order to build infrastructure to service its mining and port
operations. Rio Tinto had long supported the Wickham Skydivers group at the Wickham airstrip. But relocating the Wickham Skydivers and opening the Roebourne Airstrip up to services by the Royal Flying Doctors was complicated by findings that the surface soil at the airport contained asbestos traces. The contamination was caused by damage to asbestoscontaining marker cones positioned along the edges of the airport’s landing strip, windsock and taxiing areas. The Shire of Roebourne believes past maintenance practices in which a steel railway sleeper was dragged across the airstrip to keep it level and graded caused the damage to the marker cones. Prime Environmental Services will remove the asbestos by removing layers of topsoil in progressively deeper tranches, and the Council expects this work to be completed by this Christmas, although it will depend upon
• Council expects work to be completed by Christmas the level of contamination. Once the asbestos is removed, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority will need to give their approval, with hopes the airport can be operational by early 2013. Joanne Hill, the manager of media and communications for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, welcomed the reopening of Roebourne Airstrip. “The more airstrips available for us to land at in remote areas, the better,
as it substantially enhances our ability to respond to emergencies in a timely manner, optimising the outcomes for patients,” Ms Hill said. But Ms Hill also said regular RFDS flights will continue to land at Karratha. The RFDS will only use the Roebourne Airstrip in the event of mercy flights in which it is deemed necessary to land at the airport to save the life of a patient in a critical condition.

A new variable message trailer valued at more than $30,000 has been purchased by the Cleansweep Taskforce to promote upcoming community events and deliver road safety messages. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig said funding for the trailer was contributed by Roadwise (WALGA), Woodsideoperated North West Shelf Project and Pluto LNG. “The trailer is extremely versatile and can be used to deliver road safety messages in school zones, where road works are being undertaken or in areas frequented by pedestrians,” Councillor White-Hartig said. “Police based throughout the Shire of Roebourne will also be able to use the trailer to communicate important road safety messages to passing motorists and display their
speeds using a radar device. The trailer will regularly be used to promote community events throughout the Shire and to display a new hotline for graffiti reporting. The trailer incorporates the latest technology with a GPS tracking and monitoring system, the ability to be programmed remotely and numerous security features. The Cleansweep Taskforce is headed by the Shire of Roebourne’s Community Safety Coordinator. The Cleansweep Taskforce is comprised of representatives from the Shire of Roebourne, WA Police, Rio Tinto and the Woodside-operated North West Shelf Project and Pluto LNG. Further funding is provided by the State Government’s Royalties for Regions initiative.

Angel of Cuisine I think we can say it’s officially hot now. Oh how Mother Nature does like to play tricks with our fitness routines. One minute it’s windy, foggy or smoky and the next it’s just blazing hot. I don’t know about everyone else but 6am is seeming like a sleep in these days, which means that without some sort of pick me up, by lunchtime I feel like I’ve already lived a day. At the very least, it’s a good idea to grab some sort of exercise even for just 30 minutes early in the morning. It will set your body up for the day and will help set you on your way to making healthy choices. You have to carry water, it’s a must, otherwise the vending machines and fridges full of cold sugary beverages will
be screaming your name. Keeping hydrated is essential and even when working out in the cool of the morning you should always have some handy. The early morning warmth is great for outdoor yoga. If you have a TV setup outside, grab yourself a DVD and get stretching. Yoga is great for the mind and the body and don’t pencil it into your workout routine, grab a pen, because everything you do in yoga makes you stronger and more effective at other workouts. So even by treating yourself to what seems a less intense workout, you are creating strength for when you need to utilise it later.
This weather will have you slothing if you let it. Don’t give up. We have a great run through to Christmas now where you really can make a difference for yourself and smash some goals for 2012. So settle in, make a plan; the time for action is today. Have a healthy week!

Healthy Tips and Tricks Research and reading is not a waste of time when it comes to a new healthy lifestyle program. If you never ask questions, you never learn the answers. Treat yourself to a new inspirational or cooking book every now and again instead of a piece of cake. Relax with the book when you have any moments of temptation. It’s pretty hard to eat potato chips while reading a healthy cook book, the guilt will eventually overcome you. Seriously though, its always great to expand your mind and help keep you focused on your goals.

2 Arnotts Malt O Milk Biscuits Mashed Frozen Banana Melted Milk Chocolate Banana is great because when you mash it and freeze it, it really does have that ice-cream consistency. Mango would also work well I think, although you would need to process it rather than mash it. Experiment with different tastes and flavours, the options are endless.
Mash as many bananas as you need to make a batch of these. One banana will probably do two serves. Mash well and freeze for about 30 minutes to an hour until slightly hardened. Spread the mix between two Malt O
Milk biscuits and press down. Continue to make the whole batch and then line up on greaseproof paper and drizzle with melted milk chocolate. Freeze in a container lined with greaseproof paper with an airtight lid in the freezer. These are great for kids after school or parties. You could mix a little caramel or chocolate through the mashed banana before freezing for a ripple effect or sprinkle the tops with sprinkles or chocolate shavings.

SWAP IT for a healthier lifestyle swaps. Sports Medicine Australia WA Branch Education and Services Manager, Dana Pimley said the event hoped to encourage healthier practices. “An unhealthy diet can lead to chronic health conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers, but eating healthier certainly has its benefits. A healthy diet also means more energy to be active,” said Ms Pimley. “This Expo will hopefully inspire all participants to engage in a more active and safer environment.” Maurice Swanson, Heart Foundation’s Chief Executive,
said the Swap It, Don’t Stop It campaign offered simple messages about making changes that can help you achieve a healthier lifestyle. “Recent statistics show that 66.3 per cent of Western Australian adults were classified as either overweight or obese so programs such as the one being offered by West Arthur Community Resource Centre are making a positive contribution to our community,” she said. To engage in a healthier lifestyle, Sports Medicine Australia Western Australia Branch in conjunction with the Pilbara Health and Recreation Expo offers the following tips:

Women miners line up for e-mentoring program Women working on remote mining, oil and gas projects will soon benefit from an industry e-mentoring program designed to increase gender diversity across the national resource sector. The final details of the national e-mentoring program was one of many agenda items as the Australian Women in Resources Alliance (AWRA) reference group met in Perth on Tuesday. Comprising representatives from employers and government and industry bodies, AWRA seeks to connect women resource workers with both male and female mentors whose success and experience can offer guidance and support. “We’ve been overwhelmed with expressions of interest from women who want direct access to leaders in the industry, which indicates the desire of students, jobseekers and professionals to take advantage of the abundant career opportunities the sector offers,” AMMA executive director, industry Minna Knight says. “The AWRA e-Mentoring Program will extend the benefits of mentoring to those women who have struggled with face-to-face mentoring due to their remote locations and non-traditional work schedules. “The program’s technology will guide them through a structured process supported by an integrated chat tool, video conferencing and various functions so both mentor and mentee get the most out of the relationship.” AWRA is facilitated by resource industry employer group AMMA with funding from the Australian Government’s Critical Skills Investment Fund. The initiative is assisting industry to meet
its skills demand through greater attraction and retention of women workers. Ms Knight says a recently completed national analysis of gender diversity in resource roles indicates that both industry and government must step-up their efforts to increase the participation of women from the current 13.4% to 25% by 2020, in line with AWRA’s overarching goal. “Industry forecasts are that more than 90,000 new jobs will be created on Australia’s major resources and related construction projects by 2015 and women have a very important role to play in the development and operation of these projects,” said Ms Knight. “If the industry is to meet it’s true potential, we need to make a deliberate effort to mentor young women so they can go on to deliver an additional $240 billion worth of projects sitting in the national pipeline. “Complementing the AWRA e-Mentoring Program will be a targeted education campaign in the form of ‘AWRA Way Forward Guides’. The guides will assist employers to create inclusive cultures, implement flexible work practices, engage with female jobseekers, improve living facilities and create greater career development opportunities for women.” The AWRA reference group meeting took place ahead of the AMMA West Coast Conference on October 24; a one-day event dedicated to a wide-range of workforce issues impacting resource operations in Australia’s west.

Huge site and caretaker approval It is rare to find such a huge 7332m2 leasehold property in Wedgefield, giving companies a unique opportunity to snap up a property to set up or expand their operations with significantly lower than usual capital requirements. Offering caretaker accommodation approval, the site can also be used during these tight market times as a company accommodation solution.

The property also includes dual double gate access to Yanana Street, multiple three phase power points and approximately 170m2 of concrete pad. It is also level, cleared and fully fenced. WA excerpt from the 2012 October market report Infrastructure projects and solid population growth are driving Western Australian property prices, but they are still well below their peak. A string of recent reports are confirming what everyone already knew about Western Australia: the future is looking up. WA is known as one of the three states on the right side of Australia’s two-speed economy, but many would tell you it is much more than that; perhaps it is almost single-handedly responsible for keeping Australia ticking along during uncertain economic times. Property performance Perth recorded a 0.2% rise in median value for the quarter, which adds up to a total of 1.7% for the year, according to APM. “Western Australia is ticking all the boxes at the moment,” says Andrew Wilson, senior economist at APM.
“Perth is leading the pack in terms of price growth for the year and that’s no big surprise. We’re seeing growth in rental income due to a big shortage of accommodation there. We are tracking 7–8% rises over the quarter in median asking rentals, for both houses and units, which refl ects the lack of available property.”
the economy, a conservative estimate would see the Perth median rise a further 2–3% by year end. “Perth is still about 7% off its peak, so, with the lowest rate of unemployment and highest incomes, there’s still plenty of upside there,” Wilson says.
Wilson says Perth’s upsides can be attributed to a combination of fundamentals and market conditions.
Deloitte Access Economics Business Outlook agrees that there is plenty to cheer about in WA.
It has Australia’s strongest economy there and is looking at an annualised population growth of 3%, which is very strong.

of the performance to provide even more action to the rambunctious drama. That said, in the post performance question and answer session, both live performers were keen to suggest the puppets acting was a little “wooden”. The actor’s regular Q & A feature was itself a huge hit. Several young audience members volunteered probing questions about set, costume, characters and ... cost. All the kids were given the chance to hop up on stage and join the performers to look about the set and props. Matrix Theatre and QTC’s particular enactment of Treasure Island initially took to the road in Queensland as a way of putting light in the lives of families in the flood ravaged state. “It could send a bit of relief … to sort of brighten the spirits of young kids and big kids,” Larkin said. “It’s essentially the original pirate tale.”

Hedland was shipshape for all things nautical last week, with Queensland Theatre Company in conjunction with Matrix Theatre presenting their final performance of Treasure Island at the Matt Dann Cultural Centre. Children and adults alike escaped the midday Pilbara heat by sinking into their seats and Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous swashbuckling story. The tale of adventure, pirate mutiny and raucous skulduggery brimmed with dialogue and action. It was a feat made especially notable by the fact only two actors, Joss McWilliam and Tom Larkin, played the myriad, dizzying roles required. The performers swirled about between roles including father and son, doctor and shipmate, captain and crew and, of course, the infamous pirate Long John Silver. Ahem, we must not forget two tiny puppets “Woody” and “Chip” who popped up in the latter stages

She’s a singer and where did all singers head to try their luck? The Sunset Strip. Drew is a barman at ‘ The Bourbon Room,’ the coolest music venue in town. He is in a band and gets his start when his band is asked to support Arsenal, fronted by Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise). Alec Baldwin is the owner of the Bourbon Room, Catherine Zeta-Jones is the wife of the Mayor, and she vows to shut down the Bourbon Room. Russell Brand is the assistant to the owner of the Bourbon Room.
It’s essentially a ‘boy meets girl’ story. Circumstances push Sherrie and Drew apart, they go their separate ways and quickly work out their new chosen paths have taken them away from their true passion and from each other. Rock of Ages has some of the coolest rock songs throughout the movie. Songs by bands such as Def Leppard, White Snake, Poison, Twisted Sister and more. Having been an avid fan of hard rock music when I was a teenager in the eighties, I found it hard to sit through a musical version of my youth. Rock of Ages would’ve been much more appealing if it had a stronger story-line, wasn’t a musical and didn’t constantly remind me of Glee. So in true hard rock eighties fashion, throw your TV out of your window, brush your imaginary mullet and go to listen to some Guns n Roses.
event n Max Coppin, Lex Marinos and Trevor Jamieson perform scenes from Hipbone Sticking Out at Roebourne amphitheatre
Hipbone Sticking Out is a theatre production created in Roebourne that is set to tour nationally and around the world.
n Actor Lex Marinos performs scenes from Hipbone Sticking Out to Roebourne audience
Hipbone Sticking Out takes national stage
There are central families from the Pilbara involved in the play as well as nationally acclaimed actors.
The title is based on the word Murujuga (Burrup Peninsula), which means “hipbone sticking out” in Ngarluma language.
Natalie O’Donnell, the lead singer from Mamma Mia, one of Australia’s highest grossing musicals is in the play with a whole range of local and professional actors.
Scott Rankin, writer and director of Hipbone Sticking Out said the large production will premiere in July as part of a festival for the centenary of Canberra.
“More excitingly, they will be mentoring and training up local young people and some of the senior women who are really good singers,” said Rankin.
“We’re taking a show from the community of Roebourne to a celebration with the nation,” said Rankin.
“When we’ve finished the project there’ll be a whole range of people who can continue to make film, tell stories and get their cultural material out there.
“Over the next few years it’ll be touring around the country and then going overseas.“ Hipbone Sticking Out is a production covering 400 years of community history from 1602 to 2012. It tells of the way in which the old world, “the European world”, came to the shores of the Pilbara and into contact with the Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi people. “It’s kind of funny and sad and big. “It’s told in a whole lot of unusual ways using projection and performance,” said Rankin.
We’re taking a show from the community of Roebourne to a celebration with the nation
“We’re thinking of it as a cultural resources boom in the Pilbara alongside the mineral resources boom.” “One thing the community has said to us is they wanted people to know about the new Roebourne not just the troubles and the difficulties the community has, but they also didn’t want to disguise that it has been a hard journey.” The production premieres in July 2013 at Canberra.

David Williamson’s new play Managing Carmen broadcast live to regional WA Following Black Swan’s successful first live broadcast in 2011 of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Black Swan has announced its next broadcast.
Brent Lyall is a freakish young sporting talent. At the age of twenty-three, the country lad is already captain of one of the most successful football clubs in the land. He is managed by the ruthless and famous sports manager Rohan Swift, a foulmouthed bully of legendary status. Not only is Brent paid a prodigious amount of money to play AFL football, he makes three times as much with product endorsements: the advertisers simply love him and his glamourous model girlfriend. But he should be raking in a lot more advertising cash – if only he wasn’t so guarded in front of every camera! Rohan is determined not to let Brent’s uptight performance get in the way of rich endorsement earnings and hires a psychologist to unleash Brent’s on-camera talent. But as Rohan finds out, Brent is not quite the simple country boy he seems. He has a secret passion for cross-dressing. Brent’s carefully managed career is in jeopardy and Rohan needs to come up with an emergency plan to keep Brent’s career and earning potential on track!

Managing Carmen by David Williamson, will be broadcast live on November 30, 2012 from the State Theatre Centre of WA in Perth to regional WA audiences over the Westlink channel. The live broadcast of theatre performances is an opportunity for thousands of regional WA citizens who cannot attend Black Swan performances because of distance or financial constraints to share a statewide ‘live’ experience within their own home or community. In May 2011, the live broadcast of A Midsummer Night’s Dream was watched by approximately 4,000 patrons at regional venues, at Community Resource Centres around WA and at homes over the Westlink channel. This year, Managing Carmen will be shown at 10 regional venues, as well as Community Resource Centres and homes using the Westlink channel. The live broadcast is a free event, so we recommend booking tickets at Matt Dann Cultural Centre Port Hedland early to secure your seats.

Community celebrates Wick By Tamara Binamat Wickham residents past and present united last weekend to celebrate the town’s 40th anniversary. Hosted by the Wickham Community Association, in partnership with the Shire of Roebourne and Rio Tinto, the celebrations included a free community fun day at Wickham Oval followed by a concert at the Wickham Picture Gardens. The free community fun day commenced at 10am with a celebrity cricket match. Competitors included elite athletes Sam Newman, Chris Yarran, Lewis Jetta and Matt Hodgison and sport broadcaster Craig Hutchison. The community fun day was followed by a concert held at the Wickham Picture Gardens with a stellar line-up of Australian bands. Nineties rock band Baby Animals headlined the event, playing their chart topping hits with Suze De Marchi delivering a rock-star performance. Joe Camilleri and the Black Sorrows had the crowd at their feet with Black Sorrows hits and old Jo Jo Zep tracks. The event was a sell-out with many locals appealing on Facebook sites for tickets ahead of the event. With such a high calibre performance from all artists on the stage, the night was one many
locals should remember for another 40 years.

n Irene McLennan, Emily Rodd, Deidre Bourke and Luella Line are from Wickham and loved the concert

with an open cheque book, so we thought we’d just have to sink or swim on our own, it turns out we had a great time and the results were fantastic!” Justin said the band have definitely found their niche in touring regional Australia. “Scott and I have been performing out in the desert and country towns for over a decade,” said Justin “Our work seemed to keep us away from the cities, away from the light. “We always had this running joke ‘I bet you we’ll get famous for being the world’s most unknown band’.” Lighting Jack, a blues and roots artist from Bunbury will be supporting the guys in Exmouth. Multi-instrumental Jack has supported Dave Hole, Ash Grunwald, Angels, Blue Shaddy and Em Dee.

Ill Starred Captain
Ill Starred Captain are finally back on the road through regional WA. The passionate, hardworking, innovative two-piece band are Justin Francis and Scott Bassham, fulltime musicians since starting the band 12 years ago. With drummer extraordinaire Justin on drums and Scott on vocals and guitar, the duo have actually invented their own musical genre. “We have so many different sounds and styles so we thought we’d put it all in a box of our own and call it folk-punk-surfadelia,” said Justin. “We’re influenced by folk music, blues, rock and roll, punk, funk, psychedelic and classical music.” The duo play a mix of original songs and covers. If you’re lucky enough you’ll hear Ill Starred Captain spins on Johnny Cash, The Saints and ACDC. Ill Starred Captain have recently
wrapped up an Australian tour with Chris Matthews and will now focus on recording their fourth studio album. The duo had a massive 2011, releasing their latest album Black Swan Eye on their own label and touring all over Australia from their new base in WA. The team covered an amazing amount of miles and found time to create some fantastic videos for four of the ten tracks on Black Swan Eye, which was released earlier this year. “We really threw ourselves into putting our music out properly this time, as we’d had a few bad experiences with other labels and management we’ve been attached to over the years,” said Scott. “We had to overcome a lot of preconceived ideas as far as what we thought of as our limitations. “Even making videos was terrifying to us but we didn’t have a big label knocking at our door

Wickham celebrates the official opening of the new Recreational Centre The new purpose built $22 million Wickham Recreation Centre was officially opened last weekend to an enthusiastic crowd as part of the town’s 40th anniversary celebrations. The project commenced in 2010 and involved over 400 people including 84 subcontractors and suppliers for its construction. Local sub contractors were used where possible and this combined with community input into design and functionality has resulted in one of the top recreational and sporting facilities in the Pilbara. The Wickham Recreational Centre (WRC) facilities have been opened progressively since July 2012 including new basketball/tennis/netball courts, indoor cricket nets, dual use paths, new change rooms, purpose built gymnasium, and a new café-bistro and sportsman bar for which a liquor licence was recently approved. Rio Tinto Pilbara Operations chief development officer Andrew Kite said the company was extremely pleased with the high quality result of the WRC and appreciative of the support received from Wickham community and other stakeholders during the consultation, building and utilisation of the facility.
partners completed ahead of our Wickham town expansion plans.” It’s 40 years since the town of Wickham was originally built by the company now known as Robe River Iron Associates (RRIA) joint venture, which consists of Rio Tinto (53 per cent), Mitsui (33 per cent), Nippon Steel (10.5 per cent) and Sumitomo Metal Industries (3.5 per cent). The Wickham Recreational Centre project was first suggested and supported by RRIA as a community contribution several years ago. The WRC was officially opened by Shire of Roebourne and Wickham Community Association President Fiona White-Hartig, and supported by a strong Rio Tinto executive management presence including Mr Andrew Kite, General Manager Ports Maintenance Marnie Finlayson, and General Managers Accommodation and Town Management Andrew Wildy and Alistair Baron. Local sporting groups have also praised the new development and Mr Aaron Sheldon, who is the Lead Coach for the Wickham Wolves Senior team said the WRC has improved the quality of sporting facilities and options.
“One of our main objectives was to construct a top class facility to successfully meet the needs of the fast growing community,” Mr Kite said.
“The whole thing looks good but we are particularly happy with the new change rooms – being able to have a warm shower and air conditioning has made a huge difference to us and it’s all the little things that players appreciate,” Mr Sheldon said.
“We want our employees to feel comfortable and settled with their family and friends.
“It has also opened up our scope for training by offering other sporting options, with more variety.
“The new centre is a significant community investment by Rio Tinto and Robe River Iron Associates joint venture
“Next year will have a bigger impact because we can appreciate the facilities for the whole season and have

• Wickham are the 2012 Champions
Softball season wrap up
By Olivia Deacon, president of Wickham Ladies Softball After another great year for the West Pilbara Ladies Softball Competition, I just wanted to write a quick round up of season 2012 and thank all those involved. With teams from Karratha, Wickham and Dampier, we have had a great competition for many years now and we hope there are plenty more to come.
• Safiyah Cook and Eloise Taylor are off to Melbourne
Local dance students offered place in national ballet school By Michelle Cook Five students from JaBaT Dance Inc in Port Hedland travelled to Perth in July to audition for The Australian Ballet School’s Interstate/ International Program for 2013. Safiyah Cook, 9-years-old and Eloise Taylor, 10-years-old, both from Port Hedland, received their letters last week offering the girls a place with The Australian Ballet School based in Melbourne. The girls will take part in the school’s Interstate Program next year. Safiyah, a Grade 2 Ballet student, also takes part in jazz, tap and ballet extension classes.
K 46
She is on track to become an accomplished dancer. Having started dancing at the
age of two, Safiyah has received top marks with honours in all her ballet, jazz and tap exams as well as being awarded trophies for her achievements. Eloise, a Grade 3 Ballet student, also takes part in ballet extension classes and has been dancing for a number of years. Eloise achieved top marks in her ballet exams. Both girls study the Cecchetti style of ballet under the careful instruction of their internationally recognised teacher Miss Angela Christian. This is a major achievement for both the girls and the school. The girls would like to thank Goodline, Ayesha’s Café, Hedland Boulevard Newsagency and Jetset Travel Port Hedland for assisting in the travel costs to Perth.
The excitement carried all the way to the end of the season this year with our awesome A-grade Grand Final between Wickham and Karratha’s Inland Storm. The game started slow but kept ebbing and flowing all the way through, until the score was a draw at the end of regular game time. So as you softball fans know – sudden death started with Wickham taking the field first trying to weather the pressure from the Inland Storm batting line-up. Then when the umpire called “Play ball”, the Inland player hits a great drive toward centerfield with her fellow runner passing third base and heading for home before Wickham’s deadly centerfielder, Crystal Ladyman, makes great ground to take the best catch of the game. That means there are no runs in as Wickham steps up bat. As Wickham coach, I knew we were in a strong position with Tracey Blanket on second bag and Coco facing up to the pitcher, but I still couldn’t watch.
The next thing, I heard a cheer all around the ground and turned to see Coco hit deep into the outfield before crossing for a homerun. All the girls played a great game. So congratulations to Wickham being 2012 champions and congratulations to all the girls who took home an award at the awards night. I would also like to thank a few people who have made this year another great year for ladies softball. Wickham would like to thank the Committee for all of their efforts over the course of the year. A huge thank you also to all of the umpires and scorers – we couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you to all of the other teams – you girls rock. Thank you to Barrie Sargent for everything you put into our competition. Congratulations to Noodles membership, it is well deserved.

A big thank you to Brierity and Rio Tinto and the Shire of Roebourne for your sponsorship. Wickham would also like to say a huge thank you to our dear friend, player, and secretary for softball, Janelle Miller (Scott). Janelle has been with softball for a while now, but this was her last season as she moves to Perth with her family. She will be dearly missed by all of us. The only thing left for me to say now is, bring on next year.

The Millstream-Chichester National Park was the location for the first ever Pilbara Off Road Triathlon hosted by the Nickol Bay Triathlon Club on October 20 and 21. The weekend kicked off with the kids event on Saturday afternoon. Although there was only a small field of two, both competitors put in a huge effort in the hot conditions. Sam McDermott came across the line first, closely followed by Sophie Ward. The main event on Sunday saw 19 individuals and 10 teams lining up at the start line. The event commenced with a 600-metre swim in Deep Reach Pool followed by a 19-kilometre mountain bike ride through to Crossing Pool. Competitors then ran 4 kilometres through the National
Park walking trails to the finish line at the Millstream Homestead. First across the finish line was team ‘Oak Kamp’ (Les Oakley and Jan Steenkamp). Mark Smith took out first place in the Individual Mens category and Sarah Doy took the honors for the Individual Ladies category. The event was made possible by grant funds received from Woodside and the Shire of Roebourne. The Nickol Bay Triathlon Club would like to thank Marc McDonald and the rangers at the Millstream National Park who put in a great amount of time and effort in preparing the park for the weekend. They would also like to thank Rob Graham and his team from the local SES who gave up their weekend to provide onsite first aid assistance, as well as all the local volunteers who drove out for the weekend to assist with the marshalling of the event.

Sam Newman and Lewis Jetta jet into town By Ben Leahy There were no footballs in sight but that didn’t stop students at Karratha’s St Paul’s Primary School from having a ball with star footy players last Friday, October 19. Rather than drop punts, the students took the chance to fire curly questions at TV personalities Craig Hutchison and Sam Newman and current players Lewis Jetta, Chris Yarran and rugby’s Matt Hodgson. With Free Agency testing player loyalties, Carlton’s Chris Yarran faced the trickiest question of the day when he was asked: “Is footy your hobby or your job?” But it was Sydney Swans speedster Lewis Jetta and his quick wit, who proved the biggest hit with the kids. When asked what he was thinking as he bounced away from Hawthorn’s Cyril Rioli in the recent AFL Grand Final, Jetta drew rounds of laughter. “I just thought, ‘Run like Road Runner.’ ‘Beep-beep’ and I was gone,” Jetta said. And when asked how good it felt winning an AFL Grand Final? “It was a bit like opening your
lunchbox and finding Twisties inside,” he said. Jetta and the gang spent 45 minutes answering questions, signing autographs and chatting to the kids, before heading on to other commitments as part of Wickham’s 40th anniversary the following day. Sam Newman fielded the most questions, including explaining that he had only become a television star by chance when he was asked at the last minute to fill in on a TV show after the programmed guest failed to show. Western Force captain and Wallabies player Matt Hodgson took the microphone to explain that rugby players didn’t run as far as AFL footballers but were much stronger, while Carlton’s Chris Yarran re-enacted his Goal of the Year kicked against Richmond in Round 1. The Swans’ Jetta also had to admit to kicking 19 points before he kicked a single goal at the start of his career. But that admission didn’t stop St Paul’s students from mobbing him at the end of the session as they formed a sea of kids around him all looking for a high-five.
