Alan said “Here’s me stuck up in Port Hedland heartbroken because I thought she’d just hung up on me and she wasn’t going to come”. “She didn’t talk to me for three or four days after that,” said Alan. “I was packing,” explained Mel. “From the first day I met her I though ‘she’s really pretty, she’s normal, she’d do anything for her family and loved her dogs,” said Alan. “She’s a keeper.” A few years later Alan proposed while on holiday in Europe. The pair visited the Trevi Fountain in Rome when the big moment took place. “At the Trevi Fountain you throw coins over your shoulder to make a wish,” said Alan.

“We were both standing there ready to throw our coins when I dropped my coin. “It gave me the opportunity to get down on one knee and I proposed to her.” Three years later the couple are planning their wedding in Dampier among 70 family and friends. The pair discussed a location to get married but decided on getting married near Karratha. “Karratha is home for us - we’re proud to live here,” said Alan. “We want our family to see a little bit of our life and how we live up here. “Also, it’s something different from a typical ‘Perth Wedding’ which all seem the same!

The North’s largest leisure centre features innovative environmental designs

• Simon Kot, Chris Adams, Jacquie Boydell, Brendon Grylls, Geoff Shoemark, Graeme Chubb

“To make the centre truly multi-purpose the main hall at the Leisureplex will also be utilised as a community cyclone welfare centre.”

• Minister for Regional Development Brendon Grylls toured the construction site of the Karratha Leisureplex this week

Karratha’s new Leisureplex is due to open to the public by mid-2013, the Pilbara Echo was told at a recent tour of the facility. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig said a highlight of the new centre’s design was its innovative energy and water efficiency. The construction contract, awarded to Pindan Contracting, required the engagement of an environment engineer. As part of the process Wood and Grieve Engineers assessed the facility, looking for opportunities to reduce energy consumption and consumables and to ensure that it met an energy efficient green star rated design. After the consultation, various initiatives have been added to the design of the complex. A water use initiative is being implemented, which uses recycled treated water to water the ovals, made available by upgrading the supply line along Dampier Highway. The backwash from the swimming pools will be pumped into a separate storage tank, re-treated and also used to water the oval areas. “Sourcing potable water can be difficult in the Pilbara so we took the opportunity to be proactive and find a solution that was also environmentally responsible,” Councillor White-Hartig said. “It was a commitment that the Shire gave to the Water Corporation as part of the overall potable water supply service to the facility.” Additionally, the water heating system, which will be used for the leisure pool and splash pad during winter, has been designed to use a heat pump system which will use less energy and cost less than alternative water heating systems.

A solar blanket will be used on the main pool to assist in reducing evaporation and retaining heat during the cooler months. The building will feature a Building Management System (BMS), a technology system used for overall management of energy usage that can be programmed from one central source. This can effectively manage lighting and cooling systems throughout the facility. To make the centre truly multipurpose the main hall at the Leisureplex will also be utilised as a community cyclone welfare centre. The Leisureplex has been designed in accordance to Queensland cyclonic welfare centre standard guidelines, which are above the WA building requirements for a community welfare centre facility. The roof structure of the main hall has been designed to incorporate additional structural requirements to reduce puncturing effects to the roof from potential flying objects during a cyclonic storm event. The glass and window frames in this area have also been designed to a higher rating level and doors will all be strengthened. The installation of a 500 KVA generator that can supply power to portions of the facility if power sources are lost make the complex useable during or after a cyclone should power supply from the Horizon Power source be temporarily terminated. Cr White-Hartig said the aim of the overall design was to reduce the ongoing maintenance and operational costs of the facility “We’re trying to use cost effective yet quality fixtures throughout the facility combined with innovative design solutions to reduce energy and water use,” Cr WhiteHartig said.

Pilbara businesses compete for State awards By Ben Leahy Four of the Pilbara’s best businesses will compete against regional finalists from across the State at the 2012 GWN7 Western Australian Regional Small Business Awards to be held in Perth on Friday November 9. Pilbara finalists include Karratha businesses Pilbara Site Pics, REFAP Pty Ltd and Signature Music, while Desert Goddess Beauty Clinic made it through from South Hedland. The Pilbara finalists will have to beat out businesses from the Mid-West, Great Southern, South West, Kimberley, Wheatbelt and Goldfields-Esperance regions in a competition that this year attracted a record number of entries. James Cutfield, who set up sound and lighting event company

Signature Music in Karratha, said his small business has allowed him to pursue his dream of living in Karratha and working in the music industry. “When I was younger, I didn’t necessarily see the career path that would let me live my dream,” James said. “But now I have been able to stay connected with music and live in Karratha – most young musicians leave town.” James and Signature Music are now one of four finalists in the Small Business Awards’ Business Achiever Award category. Yet when James was a young musician in high school hunting for gigs, his pathway was not always clear. It was his time working at Karratha’s Walkington Theatre with a sound guy, who would later become his mentor, that

James got his first inkling of a future business idea. “My mentor at the Walkington, he was the go to [sound and production] man whether it was an end of year concert or a touring band at the pub. “And when he eventually left town, I bought some modest equipment and thought that I might pick up a bit of work with my small PA system. “It wasn’t so much of a business decision at first, it was more like an opportunity to quit my day job, spend some time working on the weekends, and then be free to practice my music on the weekdays. “But the phone kept ringing with job opportunities and now, four and a half years later, I’ve built quite a successful business and haven’t had any time to record music,” James joked.

Did you know Australia’s domestic maritime laws are changing?

To become a finalist in the State’s regional finals, James, like the other Pilbara businesses, has also had to demonstrate a contribution to the community. “It is a mixture of being a successful business, showing that you have the skills to operate and grow your company, and also being an active member of the business and wider communities,” James said. James said he is proud that he is able to give back to the community by now employing a full-time staff member.

I was hoping for at that time,” James said. “Also being passionate about this town, I can see the benefit of what I am adding to this community by helping support [and bring] music events to the region. If James is successful he will collect his award in front of more than 250 friends, family and business associates at a gala presentation to be held at the Crown Perth Convention Centre.

He has also been employing young musicians still at high school on a casual basis, with one of those boys set to take on the second full time position next year.

“If I was to win down in Perth it would be great recognition, but the main thing is that it would provide that personal confirmation that I am on the right path and all that hard work has been worth it.”

“It makes me more motivated to help [the young boys] out and give them the opportunities that

The Pilbara Echo wishes all the finalists from the Pilbara the best of luck.

““It is a mixture of being a successful business, showing that you have the skills to operate and grow your company, and also being an active member of the business and wider communities.”

From January 2013 the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) will become the National Regulator for domestic commercial vessel safety in Australian waters and a new National System will commence operations.

Lightning strikes FMG worker

For the majority of Industry it will continue to be business as usual.

However, to guide people who own, operate or work on board a commercial vessel through the key requirements of the new National System, AMSA will be holding a series of community information days in capital cities and regional centres during October and November this year.

Come along and talk to AMSA and local state and territory maritime officers about the changes. Copies of the latest compact guide to the National System plus accompanying fact sheets will also be available.

For event locations and more information go to www.nationalsystem.amsa.gov.au

Two McConnell Dowell employees were injured as a result of a lightning strike, while working at Fortescue Metals Group’s Solomon Project, 200 kilometres south east of Port Hedland. During construction work on the rail line, a 24-year-old man from Queensland was struck by lightning at about 12:20pm on Sunday October 28. Another worker was knocked to the ground by the force of the lightning strike. Three other crew members were uninjured.

Both the injured men were attended by paramedics at the scene and taken to South Hedland Medical Campus for further treatment. The 24-year-old man suffered burns to five per cent of his body and remained in hospital for monitoring. The other injured worker left hospital after being treated for a minor neck injury. The five-man crew was preparing to leave the area after witnessing the presence of lightning. McConnell Dowell said an investigation into the incident is underway.

Welcome Road closed as part of city centre works A section of Karratha’s Welcome Road, between Sharpe Avenue and the Centro Shopping Centre entrance, will be temporarily closed between Monday November 5 and Wednesday November 7. Jacinta Harvey, LandCorp’s regional manager for the Pilbara, said the closure is part of the first stage of the Karratha City Centre Infrastructure Works project. “During this time there will be no vehicle access on this section of Welcome Road, however we have ensured that detours will be in place to allow access to businesses in the area and to minimise disruption.” The Karratha City Centre Infrastructure Works is a major infrastructure project scheduled to be completed by June 2014 with the aim of modernising Karratha’s city-scape. As part of the Welcome Road closure, traffic coming from Bulgara’s Searipple Road should use Warambie Road to access Sharpe Avenue. Traffic coming from the west of the city centre should use Warambie Road and Searipple Road to access the eastern side of Centro Shopping Centre.

The section of Warambie Road between Sherlock Crescent and Harwood Way heading east, and between Macroy Street and Sherlock Crescent when heading west, will re-open on Saturday October 27. Once this section of road is open, Crane Circle via Harwood Way will be accessible directly from Warambie Road from the west, and the entrances for the Woolworths Caltex and Just Auto Services on Warambie Road will re-open. David Ness, Karratha area manager for infrastructure company Downer Australia, said the public had been very patient with the road works so far and reminded people to slow down and be aware of the signs and their surroundings. “We thank the Karratha public for their patience during these works, which once complete, will create a better place to work, live and visit by improving greater pedestrian access to community services and local businesses.”

Roebourne’s Tyson Mowarin the founder of Weerianna Street Media and the online archive site iCampfire.tv continues to be recognised for his work in documenting Indigenous culture. Mowarin screened his short documentary about spear making, Jurdi Jurdila, at the National Remote Indigenous Media Festival, earlier this month, where it received the Troy Alberts award for excellence in cinematography. In the documentary, Mowarin filmed his cousins Wayne Stevens and Marlon Cook walking in eastern Gurruma country west of Tom Price, looking for the right wood to make artefacts with. Once they had harvested the wood, the two men then made a spear and spear thrower. Mowarin said being recognised for his work behind the camera only encouraged him to complete more projects. “The landscape was really nice out there, and we like to document people’s biographies and local aboriginal culture and history,” Mowarin said. Mowarin is not resting on his laurels

Patrick Churnside from the Ngarluma Aboriginal Corporation said Mowarin’s work was important in helping the Ngarluma people build an archive similar to the extensive work Michael Woodley has done in documenting the Yindjibarndi people. Churnside also hopes to get the elders to help shed some insight on archived documents and recordings taken by anthropologists in the area in the 1960s, which the corporation recently got its hands on. Mowarin, meanwhile, will make digital copies of the Ngarluma biographies so the footage can be held in trust locally as well as in the national archives in Canberra. If given permission by the elders, he also hopes to screen some the biographies on a big screen in Roebourne.

either and is already chipping away at another project, the Ngarluma Elders Project funded by the Ngarluma Trust The project aims to film the stories of the Ngarluma elders and traditional owners of the coastal land near Roebourne by taking them out to country and places that are important to them. Mowarin said the Ngarluma elders have knowledge that needs to be passed onto the next generation. “[The documentaries] are about preserving their stories,” Mowarin said. “But it is also helping us to use that knowledge today and not just in 100 years time like a traditional archive. Mowarin hopes to complete five biographical documentaries about Ngarluma elders as part of the project. For his first biography, Mowarin took seven carloads of Roebourne locals, including Ngarluma elders Aunty Jean and Rebecca, into the bush for three days and two nights. During the trip, Mowarin filmed short clips on traditional hunting and cooking. He also filmed the group visiting a tree where one of the Aunties was born. “She was born under a tree in the

safety talks to the North Tom Price and Tom Price Primary Schools, and Tom Price Senior High School. The ceremony was opened by Shire of Ashburton Councillor Cecilia Fernandez and attended by more than 200 residents. The Shire of Ashburton hosted the skate park opening, which was sponsored by Rio Tinto, and cooked an afternoon barbecue for all attendees to enjoy. Shire of Ashburton CEO Jeffery Breen, said the event was memorable. “It was a huge success, expertly organised by Melissa May and her band of volunteers. “There were 170 registered participants and over 200 people in attendance. “I think one of the keys has been the prominent location of the park. It is on a busy corner and very prominent.

The Skate Park redevelopment was funded by a Lotterywest Community Spaces Grant, Rio Tinto and the Shire of Ashburton and is designed by Convic. Simon Oxenham, Managing Director of Convic said it was a joy to work with such a proactive Council and Community. “As part of our brief, the Shire required a high level of community consultation to ensure that the voice of not only the skaters but that of the broader community of Tom Price was heard and that these suggestions were then incorporated into the design of the facility,” he said. “This, coupled with the very high profile location of the park has resulted in a fantastic outcome that really is an asset to the entire community of Tom Price.”

“It says we think the young people in town are important. “I can’t wait to build skate parks in Paraburdoo and Onslow.”

“The lifestyle [in Australia] is way more relaxed, especially up here in the North West. “You earn loads of money and you get this beautiful weather. “The move here was the right move for me and my family. Michael spent his early years growing up in Zimbabwe on his family-owned game park. “Literally right outside our garden fence, you could see lions, buffalo, kudu [antelope] – anything,” Michael said. “It was really great, a beautiful country, beautiful people.” Political turmoil engulfed Michael’s family in 2000, when he was 13-years-old. The family were forced off their land, seeking shelter with a friend in town and losing almost everything they owned. Michael’s father flew ahead to London, found work and brought the family out after him. “It was hard, we started from scratch pretty much,” Michael said.

“We didn’t take anything from Zimbabwe, except the

money for our plane tickets. Life in London helped the family get back on their feet, but after living in a remote region in Zimbabwe, they began looking for open skies again. “We were looking for a better quality of life,” Michael said. “The UK is really like a rat race, it is pretty rushed and you are always worrying. “We always had this image of Australia – a classic Crocodile Dundee kind of image where you just lived a really laid back lifestyle. So with Michael still completing his higher education studies in zoology in the UK, his parents made the move to Australia. “They told me about the money and the weather and the fishing and I was like, ‘It sounds awesome’.” Michael soon followed in 2008 and he has not looked back since. Now, after spending the past few years working in the resources sector, he is keen to pursue his zoology studies again and begin working with wildlife. For the moment at least, that doesn’t include plans to wrestle crocodiles like Mick Dundee.

Woodside, as operator of Karratha Gas Plant (KGP) and Pluto LNG, takes seriously its commitment to responsible environmental management. Flaring is an essential process for safe operations of a gas plant and is normal industry practice. Recently you may have noticed some dark smoke flaring from KGP. This is because the Operations Flare is temporarily out-of-service. Hydrocarbons that usually go through the Operations Flare have been temporarily diverted to the Main Flare Tower, during which time the KGP is more susceptible to dark smoke flaring. Our focus is to safely and efficiently complete the work on the Operations Flare to minimise the risk of any dark smoke flaring, while maintaining safe and reliable operations.

At Pluto LNG we are continuing to focus on safe and efficient commissioning activities. From time-to-time you may still notice increased flaring but these events will reduce in frequency and length as the plant transitions into normal operations.

If you would like further information about Woodside-operated facilities please call 1800 634 988.

Bloody Slow Cup 2012 a huge success By Tamara Binamat In 2001, four police officers lost their lives after a tragic plane crash near Newman. Returning from a callout to the Kiwirrkura community, a team of three officers from Newman, piloted by an officer from Karratha, died when their aircraft crashed 2.6 kilometres east of Newman Airport. Ever since, police officers and members of the Newman Community come together in an annual event to honour the fallen officers and their families. The memorial traditionally starts off with a service, followed by the Bloody Slow Cup, a rugby match between the Australian and New Zealand communities around Newman. Newman Police Station Officer in Charge Shane Sadler said this year was a huge success. “We had a nice moving service and it finished off with the fly over of the two police airplanes,” he said.

This year an incredible 45 wreaths were laid, a moving sight during the one minute silence. Senior Sargeant Sadler said up to 300 people attended the memorial service, including police officers from around the state, with all four families represented at the service. The day of sporting events is highlighted by the Bloody Slow Cup, a take-off of the prestigious Bledisloe Cup. This year New Zealand won, again, at 27points to the Australian team’s 18 points. The Bloody Slow Cup has seen eight matches, of which New Zealand has won seven times and Australia has won once, in 2009. The Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan and his band The Filth wrapped up the occasion with their well-received hits. Senior Saregeant Sadler said the memorial weekend was an occasion to be proud of. “It was a fantastic weekend, everyone enjoyed it,” he said. “It was a lot of hard work but it paid off and it’s a fundraiser for police legacy and also for our local radio station. “I reckon it was a great game of rugby and everyone had a good time.”

Shire scene Sam’s Island annual clean-up An annual clean-up of Tidepole (Sam’s) Island in Dampier will take place this Sunday, November 11, from 9.30am. The Shire of Roebourne would like to invite community members to get together, dig in, and beautify one our iconic landmarks.

Located off the foreshores of Dampier, Tidepole Island, known locally as Sam’s Island, has a unique and fascinating history that dates back to the 1960s when Pilbara resident Sam Ostojich visited the island and fell in love with it. From 1966

Sam lived and worked on the island when he could and began constructing the castle you see on it today, continuing his effort even after breaking his back in the early 1970s. Sam lived contentedly on the island with his pet cat, Tiger, after Hammersley Iron granted him a gentleman’s lease and connected the island to a water supply. Sam was buried on his slice of paradise when he passed away in 2005. Transport has been arranged for the clean-up with pick up from 9.30am at the public boat

ramp in Dampier, or you may use your own boat. Participants are encouraged to bring boots, gloves, sunscreen and a rake or other gardening tools for trimming foliage. Water will be supplied and a barbeque with refreshments will be provided at the completion of the clean-up. At 11am the group will stop to observe Remembrance Day. To register your interest contact Shire of Roebourne Acting Ranger Services Coordinator Dean Ball on 9186 8555 or Brad Beaumont on 0408 801 040.

Public art to adorn to Dampier Highway THREE unique public artworks will adorn the major stretch of Dampier Highway come November as part of the $2.2 million Dampier Highway Streetscape upgrade project. Installation is scheduled to commence on November 12 in roundabouts between Balmoral Road West and Balmoral Road East. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig said she expects a mixed response from the community once they have been installed. “The artworks selected for this project are abstract and unlike anything I’ve ever seen, particularly in a regional town,” Cr White-Hartig said. “Public art is meant to challenge people’s perspectives and I’m really looking forward to the conversations and stories that will stem from these fantastic artworks. “They will play a significant role in

Shire of Roebourne Project Manager Geoff Shoemark, Archipelago Arts Manager Projects and Development Jen Hourquebie and minor artworks artist Bridget Norton.

the long term identity and future heritage of Karratha.” A series of minor artworks will be installed on the street light poles later in the month, rounding out the completion of the project. The Dampier Highway Streetscape

Upgrade is one of many strategic community well-being projects funded by the Shire of Roebourne and the State Government’s Royalties for Regions Pilbara Cities initiative to help improve public amenity and lifestyle options for all local residents.

Cinema going gets a new twist at Exmouth’s dive-in cinema By Ben Leahy

Koontz said.

With the famous Ningaloo Reef on their doorsteps, we all knew Exmouth residents practically lived in the water.

Mr Koontz struck upon the idea after witnessing an advertisement for a divein theatre at one of Queensland’s famous water parks.

But this summer they are taking it a step further as the local Exmouth Paltridge Memorial Swimming Pool turns itself into a dive-in theatre. Exmouth movie-goers will now be able to watch some of their favourite children’s flicks from aboard a lilo air matress in the water or from the pool’s grass lawns. Dr Seuss’ The Lorax will be the first screening on November 17, with the swimming pool showing about one movie a month until April next year. Exmouth swimming pool’s manager Josh Koontz said the dive-in nights are a hit, attracting about 60 to 70 people for each screening. “It’s very casual, and a real novelty for the kids to be able to watch a movie while floating around the pool,” Mr

“I came back and thought I would give it a try, first holding a night as a fundraiser for the Year 6 camp two years ago,” Mr Koontz said. “That went pretty well so we applied for a grant from Chevron and got the money to buy the equipment.” From there, Mr Koontz has not looked back with the possible exception of one event. “I did show Jaws last year and that was pretty good,” Mr Koontz said. “But we didn’t get as many along for that as normal so I thought I would stick to the family movies this year.” Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult and for information about movie screenings contact Josh Koontz on 9949 1042.

How Port Hedland became a cruise ship destination By Ben Leahy Hong Kong, Bangkok, Sydney … Port Hedland? It might seem odd to mention our Pilbara mining town in the same breath as such exotic destinations, yet that is not stopping Hedland from proving a popular port of call for international cruise liners. Last Friday November 2, the world’s eighth largest ship by tonnage, the Voyager of the Seas, called into Port Hedland in what will be one of five visits by large liners between October 2012 and March 2013. With more rooms than Australia’s largest hotel, Voyager has its own ice skating ring, mini golf course and shopping strip and brought more than 3,800 guests into port, one third of them international travellers from Europe and the USA. Adam Armstrong, the commercial director of Royal Caribbean Australia, which operates Voyager of the Seas, said the rapid growth in the cruise ship industry has made Port Hedland an important port of call.

MODERN APARTMENTS

“What is supporting bringing more ships to the region is the fact that the market is growing so quickly and Australians have embraced cruising,” Mr Armstrong said.

Whether you are visiting for business or pleasure, our hotel can cater for your needs with our friendly and personalised service. At Comfort Inn & Suites we provide a consistently high standard of cleanliness in our fully self contained modern apartments.

“For our two brands, Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean Cruises, we have grown from 35,000 guests [departing from Australian ports] two seasons ago to 200,000 guests this season. With more people booking cruises, Royal Caribbean is stationing some of the world’s largest liners in the region. Ships like Voyager of the Seas and Radiance of the Seas, which also docked at Hedland the previous weekend, spend the southern hemisphere summer cruising Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific and the northern hemisphere summer cruising Asia. That is where Hedland fits in – it is an important port on the way to-andfrom Asia.

PHONE 9144 0777

“We used to call into Broome,

but the docking facilities there only support ships to a certain size,” Mr Armstrong said. Port Hedland’s harbour, built to load iron ore onto bulk carriers, allows Royal Caribbean’s giant cruise liners to dock alongside the pier rather than anchoring offshore and ferrying guests to-andfrom land via smaller craft. As a large industrial port, Hedland also allows the liners to take on good quality fuel. But Mr Armstrong said the ships did not just dock in Hedland to use the facilities, they also came because the town offered a unique experience to guests. “Most cruise passengers look for a mixed experience in port – they are looking for the big attractions like Singapore and Bangkok, but they also tend to look for something off the beaten track. “Of greatest interest [in Port Hedland] is the mining activity, so there are tours to go and see a behind the scenes operation in the mines.” “[However] for our overseas guests, and even Australian guests, it is also a chance to see a relatively isolated community – a part of the country they wouldn’t normally get to.” “And Port Hedland really goes to town when a ship comes in, it gives them a very warm welcome with its market stalls and so on.” With the International Cruise Council of Australasia reporting a 34 per cent rise in the number of Australians taking local and international cruises last year, the industry seems set to continue growing. “We are going to be repositioning Voyager [of the Seas] between Singapore and Australia every year for the foreseeable future,” Mr Armstrong said. “So Port Hedland will continue to receive our ships. That means Port Hedland might never become as exciting a tourist destination as Bangkok or Sydney, but it does have a unique opportunity to boost its tourism profile.

PHPA introduces state-ofthe-art technology

Cupcakes for cancer By Tamara Binamat The Youth Shed in Karratha was adorned with sprinkles, frosting, cupcakes and families hoping to raise money for cancer research. Amanda Morley organised the event in honour of her close friend, who is suffering from Lymphoma.

for existing cancer support groups and research centres. As part of the event visitors who donated money received a cupcake that they could decorate themselves, before devouring their creation!

“Any thing that my husband and I can do to help raise the funds to stop these blood cancers, we do,” said Amanda.

Amanda’s Cupcakes for Cancer drive used proceeds from the cupcake decorating, a raffle and the selling of bandannas to raise much-needed funds for the Peter McCallum Hospital, Australia’s only cancer hospital.

After selling more than 100 cupcakes, Amanda and her team successfully raised $822 from Cupcakes for Cancer.

Amanda hopes to make Cupcakes for Cancer an annual occasion in Karratha after the success of the inaugural event.

Combined with online donations the total tallied up at around $1,100.

Prizes for the raffle were donated by Retravision, Ibis Styles, House Proud, Abundance Health and many more Karratha businesses.

The Port Hedland Port Authority is setting the benchmark as the world’s leading bulk export port, by becoming the first port in the world to install state-of-the-art digital communications technology. Port Hedland Port Authority’s General manager of Operations, John Finch said the new works include the upgrade of the digital communication systems at the PHPA shipping control tower. “The DX-Altus dispatch server was installed in the main control room and connected to three operator stations,” explained Mr Finch. “An easy-to-use touch screen console was also installed for operators, which features clearer voice and video recording to improve operator performance.“ The system upgrade has provided operators with a more efficient and quieter working environment, and has improved functionality from an operations perspective. Vessel Traffic Service Officers are able to communicate more effectively with port staff and users, including marine pilots, helicopters, large iron ore carriers and small commercial craft. Mr Finch said radio communication is vital to the effective and safe management of the port operations. “The Control Tower needs to efficiently communicate with ships, small boats, and commercial vessels to ensure movements in the port run smoothly and safely,” said Mr Finch. “It is a significant step forward for the PHPA

as it is manages the ever-increasing number of vessel movements.” The Port Authority’s CEO Roger Johnston welcomed the latest communications equipment to the Shipping Control Tower. “With vessel movements continuing to grow at the port, the PHPA required a dispatch system that would allow additional Vessel Traffic Service Officers (VTSO) to more effectively communicate with a wide range of port staff and users,” Mr Johnston said. “The latest technology also provides acoustic shock protection to eliminate feedback caused by radio interference, improving Occupational Health & Safety for operators,” he said. The easy-to-use touch screen console features the latest marine chart overlays and clearer voice and video recording to improve operator performance. Two operators will now be able to communicate to Marine Pilots, helicopters, large iron ore carriers and small commercial craft simultaneously. Other benefits of the technology include a user-friendly touch-screen console and remote channel change capability. Onsite technical teams are not required because technical support and monitoring can be done remotely and instantly from Perth. Mr Johnston said the latest communications technology is testimony to the port’s commitment to improving procedures and demonstrating best practice.

Water tower projections showcase Wickham’s vibrant future Last weekend an audience of 150 people of the broader Wickham community were treated to a stunning animated projection show on the Wickham water tank looking out over the town. The event was the grand finale of an arts project funded by Rio Tinto and coordinated by Archipelago Arts that focused on finding out what the people of Wickham had found during their time living in the town. Wickham Community Officer Charmaine Woods said Rio Tinto was proud to support the wonderful project. “Wickham has so many stories to tell and in a great example of collaborative and responsive public art, the town’s water tank made a unique storyteller,” Ms Woods said. “This was a great way to showcase and celebrate Wickham’s community spirit.” The project saw two renowned Perth artists Carol Igglesden and Sohan Ariel Hayes conduct a tenday residency in Wickham to create artworks and photographic portraits with community members and encourage discussions around what public art is and what it could celebrate in Wickham. Archipelago Arts Director Colette McEntee said that living in a region where mining takes precedence and 12 hour shifts are amongst the norms of day-to-day living, it is not often people speak the words of the arts and culture industry, and especially the topic of public art. “This can be quite unfortunate, as public art has the ability to be anything, anywhere and can hold collective meaning for the people living within that area,” Ms McEntee said. “It can also be as open or as

closed to interpretation as one wants, and works as a day-today reminder of community and town spirit.” Renowned digital media artist Sohan Ariel Hayes created the animated projection piece, which incorporated the artworks, photos and animations created with the community and featured as the masterpiece on the Wickham Water Tank. “Aesthetically, I was really impressed with the transfer of the sand drawings to the tank surface,” Mr Hayes said. “The sand becomes like star fields and the drawings star maps; then the slow rotation of the images around the tank caused all the minute sand particles to oscillate and give a wonderful impression of depth! “I love that the project translated young people’s images and aspirations in a big way to the world. “The project drew a wide crosssection of the community into a discussion on art and culture. “The mediums of sand drawing, photography and projection meshed so well and captured the interest of both young and old, big and small.” The unique event was hosted by Ms McEntee and respected longterm Wickham residents Tommy and Mick Saylor. The showcase featured sand drawing activities, animations, movies and projections with the aim of celebrating Wickham’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, current artistic endeavours by local organisations, the community’s creative artworks and the possibilities for public art in Wickham.

Exmouth employment opportunities set to soar By Gemma Sims

Fifo Capital West Coast are specialists in various forms of business financing, in particular, accounts receivable financing. They have recently established a Fifo Capital West Coast office. Cash flow is a business’s biggest need, and when it fails to flow, the business can be put under financial pressure causing it to hold back on important payments or growth opportunities. To ease cash flow issues, there is a simple and time proven method to turn accounts receivables into ready cash. Invoice discounting and other forms of invoice factoring facilities are financing tools that can be used by a variety of businesses to give instant cash resources needed to maintain momentum. Let’s look at a quick example. A business generates an invoice to another creditworthy business. Under an invoice discounting scenario, an

invoice discounter pays the business an initial 90% of the invoice value immediately, in cash. Once the customer has fully paid the invoice, the business receives the remaining 10% payment, less the invoice discounter’s fees. The benefits from this type of service are many: enabling the business to make prompt payment to its suppliers; meeting its payroll and tax obligations, funding business growth and taking advantage of other business opportunities. The types of businesses that use invoice discounters are typically those in growth mode, or those requiring short term cash funds to meet creditor and staff payments. What makes invoice discounting is that there is no need for the business to hand over their entire customer base, but only those individual invoices they choose. And, there is no need to lock into long term agreements with the invoice

discounter. The business can choose when to use the service, and when to stop. Other important features are that the invoice discounter’s lending decision is largely based on the strength of the debtor or payer of the invoice, rather than the client business, and that the entire process can often be completed within 24 hours of the business contacting the invoice discounter. Invoice discounting has evolved greatly over the past decade and sits comfortably along side conventional financing. It should be made clear that invoice financiers are not in competition with conventional lenders. To find out more about how invoice discounting can assist your businesses cash flow, call Fifo Capital West Coast 08 9345 20 42 Mobile 0419 906 326 email al.rosano@fifocapital.com or visit www.fifocapital.com.

Recruitment companies are eyeing opportunities to set up offices in Exmouth as more families look to enjoy the town’s coastal lifestyle, while also working in resource sector jobs in the Pilbara. Labor Hire Company, Seek Support, recently set up an office in Exmouth to accommodate families seeking to take advantage of the recent increase in fly-in, fly-out jobs from the town to Pilbara mine sites. Don Nicholls of Seek Support said he expects it will be a busy time for resource sector employment in Exmouth. “We think Exmouth offers people working in this sector the best of both worlds,” Mr Nicholls said. “They can live in a spectacular part of the world and still make the most of employment opportunities in WA’s North West. “We are in a position to support mining companies in finding ideal candidates to meet their needs, while also providing support to Exmouth locals, ensuring they have the best opportunity of securing these

sought after positions. “Sometimes people have an excellent skill set for a position but simply need to do some small training exercise or help in developing their CV. Exmouth Chamber of Commerce and Industry president, Jon Warren, said the town has the services and facilities for new families. “Not only is Exmouth on the Ningaloo Reef and surrounded by some of the world’s most pristine turquoise waters, the town offers excellent family support networks, schools and a range of housing options,” Mr Warren said. “Whilst properties are selling well and rental vacancies are quite low, there is ongoing development at various price ranges around town which means that accommodating the new arrivals should not be a big issue. “ Exmouth residents are now working onsite at Barrow Island, Onslow, Karratha, Paraburdoo, Pannawonica and Paulsens Gold mine. Many also work in resource sector support roles, such as in maintenance, logistics and even as helicopter pilots.

Homeopathy for you

Your life and soul Cardio training versus weight training - is one better than the other?

By Sarah Penrose Dip.Hom.Med. AROH. MAHA. NZCH. Registered Homeopath

Motion sickness

• Cindy Kempton To put it simply, a good balance of both is what you want to achieve. A well rounded week of exercise would incorporate cardio, weight training and a blend of Bodybalance or yoga. Of course it is difficult to try and fit it all in - so which is better for what you want to achieve? Cardio training will get you fitter, feeling lighter and make you feel like you can move around more easily. It will give you the 'adrenaline high' of feeling fantastic once you have finished and definitely gets you coming back for more! It will help to burn calories and body fat at a high rate - making your clothes feel looser and more comfortable and we all want that, right? Cardio training can be a huge mixture of lots of different things such as walking, jogging, swimming,

Free Weekly 3 - 4 November 2012

group fitness classes, indoor spin and court sports. Remember if you are wanting to start an exercise program, then walking briskly for 30 minutes, three days per week is suffice for the first six weeks. If you want to lose weight and you are on a mission to look your best for Christmas, then the above will not cut it. You need to be training at a higher rate and more frequently with a combination of weights and flexibility/core. More on weights and flexibility/core next week! Enjoy your week - please remember to drink plenty of water with the hot weather well upon us. Cindy Kempton BSC Dip Nutrition

“ Cardio training will get you fitter, feeling lighter and make you feel like you can move around more easily. “

Motion sickness is caused by over stimulation of the vestibular nerve which controls our balance. Motion sickness occurs because the body has a hard time keeping up with the continual changes to our balance from the constant motion and movement of travelling. If you suffer from motion sickness try to avoid big greasy meals, salty foods, dairy and alcohol the night before travel, eat light meals instead. Sit toward the front of the vehicle. When at sea, keep your eyes fixed on the horizon or land. Massaging an area about an inch above the inner wrist can also be helpful. Or, you could try homeopathy. Homeopathic medicines work by triggering the body’s natural ability to achieve and maintain homeostasis/ balance. In doing this, two things happen; first, the body is stimulated to achieve its own balance, and second, it is strengthened to become more resistant to the problem in the future. Homeopathic medicines are chosen for their similarity with the sufferer’s symptoms. There are a few commonly used homeopathic medicines for motion sickness. Arnica Often nausea will be accompanied by a bruised, achy feeling in the body; You just

can’t get comfortable. Cocculus The main symptom is a hollow feeling in the stomach; Motion sickness can also occur from watching moving objects. Opium Hot or cold sweat on the forehead with drowsiness and sleepiness. Petroleum Very pale face and dizziness, even when lying down. Tabacum Cold sweat, chills and deathly nausea. Vomiting with cold sweat all over the body. If you or someone you know is prone to motion sickness, do a little research into how they typically feel and have a few of the most similar homeopathic medicines available next time you travel. Homeopathic medicines are nontoxic, used world-wide, recognized as a legitimate system of healthcare by the World Health Organization (WHO) and evidenced by randomized controlled trials (RCT’s). Sarah Penrose is a Registered Homeopath with the Australian Register of Homeopaths (AROH), a member of the Australian Homeopathic Association (AHA) and the New Zealand Council of Homeopaths (NZCH). Sarah lives in Karratha and is always happy to discuss the benefits of homeopathy. A couple of weeks ago I set about around town asking local businesses to join me in a healthy lifestyle giveaways for Christmas. The response has been fantastic and starting next week will be weeks of competitions and prizes showcasing some of the fantastic products, services and produce that are available to us locally and help inspire your healthy new years resolutions. It can get boring quick if you can’t get creative, so hopefully we can trigger some new ideas and inspire you. It’s also a chance to see some of the great produce that will be available to us for Christmas and know when and where to order it. It has been great to meet and greet with lots of new faces and I have found nothing but positivity and support. The Pilbara Echo and I are looking forward to spreading some good cheer this Christmas, so stay tuned next week for the first week of fun. Have a Healthy Week!

Recipe of the week Devilish Chilli Crab 1 large onion 1 large chilli Cooked, cleaned, split crabs

Serves 4 1 tbs olive oil 1 750ml jar tomato puree

Fry a large onion chopped in one tablespoon of olive oil until softened. Add one large chopped chilli with seeds. Tip: If you want to remove seeds it is easier when the chilli is frozen. Add 1 large jar of tomato puree (or 2 tins of chopped tomatoes). Refill jar/tins with water and swish to get all the tomato sauce out, add to pan. Season with salt, pepper and chopped fresh or dried parsley. Reduce to low simmer for about 10 minutes. Add cooked, cleaned and split crabs and cook for another 5 minute s. Serve piping hot with fresh green salad.

“The imagination exercises a powerful influence over every act of sense, thought, reason; over every idea – Latin Proverb

Healthy Tips and Tricks There are still about seven weeks until Christmas so now is the perfect time to plan your six-week blitz and amaze your relatives on Christmas Day. What I have found this week is that everyone in town that can is willing to talk to you about and help you reach your goals. When I told them my goals, they were positive. So ask and you shall receive, but ask now because now is the perfect time to start!

Abundance Health reopens bigger and better Karratha’s decadent spa lovers and health and wellness enthusiasts had a reason to celebrate last Wednesday October 31 as Abundance Health reopened in its new, larger premises. The Abundance Team of naturopath Naomi Gillespie, massage and cosmedical therapist Koben Gillespie, massage and cosmedical therapist and skincare consultant Danielle Williams and receptionist Tara Benbow spent the night guiding champagne sipping locals through their new range of treatments. As a complete health and wellness clinic, Abundance Health still offers a large range of services including laser weight loss, remedial massage, muscle manipulation and anti-ageing treatments. But among its new star attractions are the clinic’s steam treatment room, its exclusive skincare range and its funky design with offbeat ornaments and furniture scattered throughout. So with new treatments, more space and the girls fully recovered from their opening night party, there are now even more reasons to visit the clinic. Here is a guide to what is going on at Abundance Health. Steam treatment room Abundance Health has just installed a brand new steam room – there are only a handful of these in Australia. The room allows Karratha locals to relax, completely surrounded by steam as they get a massage or body

scrub treatment. Naomi Gillespie explained that it helps to release your muscles, clear them of their toxins and relieve pain. Clients also get to choose a scent of their choice to give the steam a delightful fragrance. “This treatment is fully luxurious, it is like being cuddled by the steam,” Naomi Gillespie said. “It is like this warm hug and you get cocooned in all this beautiful smelly stuff and steam.” Muscle manipulation therapy Naomi is one of the few people in the world, who knows how to perform muscle manipulation therapy, which can help provide instant pain relief. Naomi has been practising muscle manipulation therapy for 18-years after learning it from the Australian expert who first developed the technique. Pain is often caused when muscles become extremely tight, forcing ligaments out of place and putting unnatural pressure on nerves in the body. Muscle manipulation works to align the ligaments and muscles in the body. Through careful adjustments, Naomi can push the muscles back into place and instantly provide pain relief. The Abundance Health cosmetic range Skincare consultant Danielle Williams has created an exclusive cosmetics range

for Abundance Health with spa, skin and bath products, that make use of natural and organic Australian ingredients. These include Kakadu Plum Extract, Quandong Extract, Lilly Pilly Extract, Nerolina Essential Oil (native to northern NSW and southern QLD), Fragona Essential Oil, (native to WA), Australian Lavender Oil and Australian Sandalwood Oil. Being completely organic and natural, the products add moisture to the skin and work to prevent aging. Complete health and wellness treatment Abundance Health has three treatment menus to choose from – unlike other spas they do not just focus on a single area of healthy living. Clients can choose from whole day spa and health treatments, including blood checkups and acupuncture, through to anti-ageing treatments. Danielle said clients leave with an overall sense of “feeling better, completely relaxed and healthy for a better quality of life”. Oh, and don’t forget the girls are a bit offbeat Above all, the girls at Abundance Health want you to have fun. That is why their new clinic looks a little different to most spa clinics. Gone is the Zen theme of other spas and in is the funky touch, ranging from 1960s coloured chairs to headless Beethoven statues.

“We are all a bit offbeat,” Danielle said. “Naomi wanted to do something a bit different with our clinic, make it funky and retro because that reflects Naomi’s personality.”

Lend a hand for turtle conservation

• Flatback turtle nesting - Photo by Marissa Speirs DEC

CAT 5 CYCLONE ROLLERSHUTTERS

It’s that time of year again where ancient reptiles crawl up the Pilbara’s beaches to lay their eggs – that is right, flatback turtle nesting season is here. This season, local residents are again being asked to help monitor the nesting and hatching of our ocean going guests at Wickham’s Bells Beach over the next few months. The monitoring of flatback turtles is part of the West Pilbara Turtle Program, a community based partnership between the Department of Environment and Conservation and Rio Tinto. WPTP coordinator Cath Star said

turtle monitoring would begin on Thursday November 1 and was free and fun. “We would love to see locals get involved by spending an evening or morning at the beach learning about turtles,” Ms Star said. Ms Star said training is provided and all volunteers are welcome. “While we are looking for regular beachgoers, families and individuals who just want to get involved on the weekends are also welcome.” “People who participate will learn

how to read turtle tracks, identify different species of marine turtle, determine successful nests and also learn the correct protocols for interacting with turtles in the natural environment. WPTP held two turtle information nights last week in Wickham and Karratha. These information sessions had almost 100 people in attendance with 53 new members joining the program. Locals who get involved also have the opportunity to participate in guided night tours and turtle tagging and tracking.

Principal’s property update Following the arrival of the Radiance of the Seas last Thursday October 25 Crawford Realty attended the cruise ship markets. The markets were held to greet passengers and exhibit the unique culture of the Pilbara and Crawford Realty took the opportunity to attend the markets to spread the word about positive property in Hedland. The response by the passengers of the Cruise Ship Markets was overwhelming. Many passengers were genuinely intrigued with positive returns available from our marketplace and appreciative of the information being offered by our sales representatives. Surely a first for our office, we assisted with an owner inspection with a difference, welcoming clients of Crawford Realty who boarded the ship in Sydney to view

their recent purchase in Port Hedland. For these clients it was their first time visiting Port Hedland and they were more than impressed with not only their property, but what the community and the town had to offer in relation to property investments. In an industry where it is common place to deal with clients over phone and email it was fantastic to not only meet our owners face to face, but to also to share such a positive experience with them. So impressed were these clients with their time in the town they have made further enquiries as to a second purchase to further their investment portfolio. Crawford Realty also attended the Cruise Ship markets to welcome the Voyager of the Seas yesterday Friday November 2. Should you wish to receive any information in relation to buying, selling or property management please do not hesitate to contact the office on 08 9172 5300, visit our website at www.crawfordrealty.com.au.

What is your best memory in the Pilbara? The friendly welcome I have received from everyone I have met since arriving in Karratha. Which famous person’s house would you like to sell? Donald Trump, because he is a Real Estate “Guru”. What is your favourite way of spending a Sunday? Enjoying the day out on the boat fishing & swimming then returning home to BBQ the days catch. What is your motto in life? Life’s short, so savour every breath! If the Queen would come to dinner, what would you cook for her? My family recipe spaghetti bolognese, parmesan & basil chicken parma with an Italian salad.

❚ Fabulous outdoor entertaining area overlooks the pool

Endless potential ❚ You’ll have no trouble finding a tenant to move straight into this fantastic family home

Superb family home Have you been searching for an affordable family home with room to grow? This property boasts both qualities, coming at a reasonable price yet with room out the back to add that dream pool or entertaining area. As an investment this property is equally as good. With low maintenance yards and situated in a quiet cul-de-sac close to shops and one of South Headland’s only schools, it’s the ideal set-and-forget investment offering cash fl ow and capital growth prospects. A property like this would likely lease in today’s market for between $1,700 and $1,800 per week, giving a potential return on investment of 12.31 per cent. It has a newly renovated kitchen, bench and storage space and a separate dining and lounge room. The kitchen and living areas have new floor coverings, while the three spacious bedrooms each have air-conditioning units. It also comes with a large, under-cover entertaining area.

You just don’t find too many properties like this in South Hedland, with all the foundations to grow with your family into the future. Or if you are an investor, mid-range properties like this are hot-tickets in the leasing market right now. You will have no trouble finding a tenant to move straight in and start paying off your mortgage, while even leaving extra change in your back pocket.

This property offers excellent value for money and the opportunity for a renovator to not only obtain a secure lease with lucrative returns but add some instant equity through quality renovation works. The equity made through renovations could allow you to look for a second purchase – and with the property currently vacant, it means you can start works immediately. This property is flagged by Council to be amended to R30 zoning in the upcoming Town of Port Hedland scheme amendment 51. Once zoned R30, this would be a potential multi-unit site making it a great future investment. The property has double driveways at the front and rear.

access

It is also the perfect block for adding an additional dwelling to the back to generate a dual income. Although this 3 bedroom 1 bathroom home needs work, it has a great layout and lots of potential. You will find a spacious lounge-dining area, kitchen, generous bedrooms, parking for more than six vehicles and a large 750m2 block, all located close to the South Hedland town centre. It also has a verandah running around the house, decking and a large shed in the yard. But please note buyers must make their own investigations into the development potential of the site. Multi-unit development will be subject to any future scheme amendment of the block to R30, as according to the Town of Port Hedland requirements.

Karratha’s newest cafe bares its soul By Ben Leahy

John Lennon-lookalikes, Afros and flower power jumpsuits were back in fashion at the launch of Karratha’s latest coffee lounge Soul Café last Saturday October 27.

RSL Members & Most Welcome

BINGO

While party-goers did not get to sample the café’s coffee and food, which are expected to be on offer from this weekend November 3, they did, however, get an early look at Soul’s funky décor. And with retro couches and psychedelic wallpaper like you might find in your Grandma’s house, town hipsters are likely to be impressed. Owner Beth Corps said she spent hours scouring Perth’s second hand stores for just the right touches to create an inviting feeling in the café, which will open from 7am to 4pm each day and serve organic food. “It is a place where I want people to feel like they can relax rather than being moved in-and-out quickly,” she said. “Hopefully people can come do business over lunch or mother’s groups can have breakfast with the kids playing in the corner or the single man can read his paper at the breakfast bar,” she said. When it comes to the tucker, Beth said Soul will be full of nutritious choices. “The idea is to offer Karratha a more healthy option because there is so much deep fried and quick cheap breakfasts around,” she said. The full breakfast menu will include more common fare, such as bacon and eggs and takeaway sandwiches, alongside the café’s own specially prepared muesli. There will also be organic and gluten and dairy free foods as well. Serving food that is fresh will be a key focus according to Beth, who is promising to have produce delivered more regularly from Perth rather than keeping it frozen. Local bakers, K-Town Cakes, will bake Beth’s muffins, cupcakes and loaves each morning, while Perth’s Antz inya Pantz Coffee Company will supply the all-important coffee beans. In the meantime, as the finishing touches are put to Soul Café before it opens, Beth is promising more events along the lines of her ’60s-party. “I’ve already had the writer’s group and some local artists contact me about using the café,” she said. “I want to display local art on the walls every month and give those artists some exposure. “There are also ideas down the track to incorporate local jewellery or fashion designers – or even if people want to sell their own food within the café. If these events are anywhere near as colourful as the purple wig worn by that John Lennon-lookalike, then Soul Café might be in for a bright future.

DJ review

‘Kiwi flavoured reggae’ By Tamara Binamat As all local reggae music lovers would know, 1814 are in the Pilbara to perform in Newman and South Hedland. The band performed in Newman last night, Friday October 20 are set to play in South Hedland tonight, Saturday October 21. The band has been performing “Kiwi flavoured reggae” since 2004 and is made up of Patu Colbert on guitar, Shaun Colbert on drums, Jimmy Colbert on bass, Darren Katene, lead

vocalist, Erana Jones and Ernie Semu on keyboards, Chris Pierce on saxophone and Neihana Mackey-Harrison and Rukuwai Allen as vocalists. The crew are on tour to launch their brand new album Relax. The boys are supported by DJ Antikz from Paepae Soundsystem who says he is keen to play a mix of reggae and New Zealand hits. DJ Antikz is a regular on the Pilbara tour circuit, most recently with Che Fu who performed in Karratha and Hedland.

seven years and typically plays all styles of music, from RnB to dubstep and drum and bass. He said he has a good idea of what to expect from the crowd at the event as he has performed in Point Samson in recent years and says he loves the Pilbara. Stevie M will be spinning tracks by TLC, Shaggy, Peter Andre, MC Hammer, Snoop Dogg, Brandi, Janet Jackson, Marvin Gaye and Tupac. “There’s so many artists it’s not funny,” he said. “I’ve done a fair bit of homework on the nineties era.” The party anthems of the nineties will rock the Karratha Tavern from 8pm until midnight. Tickets are sold on the door for $20 on the night.

Renowned speaker to inspire at business workshops SBC West Pilbara chairman Grant Cucel said the workshops catered to organisations at all phases of the business cycle.

Nationally acclaimed speaker, educator and entrepreneur, Sandi Givens, will visit Karratha on November 20 and 21 to present two business development workshops.

“Whether you’re looking to startup a business, grow an existing venture or are looking to become more involved in the development of the business you work for, these workshops cater to everyone by providing practical tools and ideas that can be tailored to any business situation,” Mr Cucel said.

Aimed at enhancing the potential of businesses of all sizes, Sandi’s workshops will explore the barriers to success and provide participants with a fresh new perspective of their businesses’ strengths and weaknesses. Presented as part of the fourth Pilbara Business Development series, an initiative of the SBC West Pilbara and KDCCI, the workshops are open to business owners as well as staff in business development or management roles. KDCCI chief executive officer John Lally said the only way to stay ahead of your competitors and operate as an industry leader is to be up to date with the latest business trends and developments “Attending a business development workshop is a great way to learn about new, and even tried and tested, business growth mechanisms and tactics,” Mr Lally said.

• Sandi Givens - Guest speaker

The first workshop, How to know if you’re ready to be the boss, will be held at Welcome Lotteries House on Tuesday November 20 from 5.00pm.

“The workshops provide a fantastic professional development opportunity for not only business owners, but staff members looking to up-skill and put themselves first in line for the next available promotion.”

This will be followed by a breakfast workshop on Wednesday November 21 titled, How to bring out the best in yourself.

With 25 years of experience under her belt, Sandi Givens will teach participants how to ride the ups and downs of the economy and how to achieve more success.

Light refreshments will be provided at each workshop. Tickets are just $25 per workshop for KDCCI members and $30 for nonKDCCI members.

This workshop commences at 7.30am and will also be held at Welcome Lotteries House.

Tens of millions of lost super all over the Pilbara Shire of Roebourne residents have over $21 million in lost superannuation waiting to be found, according to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). This includes over 4,450 lost accounts with an average value of $4,747 each. Many in Karratha and surrounding areas, including areas such as Wickham and Point Samson, have over $3 million in lost super in over 640 accounts, while residents around Paraburdoo have over $2.5 million in lost super across 541 accounts. Deputy Commissioner for Superannuation Neil Olesen said reforms to super are making it easier for people to manage and keep track of their super. As part of the reforms to super the ATO’s free search facility SuperSeeker has been improved to make it easier for Pilbara residents to find their lost and inactive accounts. “While more Australians have successfully reclaimed lost super recently, there’s still plenty out there for people to find,” said Mr Olesen. “SuperSeeker can help people to not only find lost super, but move money sitting in inactive accounts to one fund and save on fees and charges.” SuperSeeker improvements As well as a simple search that can be done using your tax file number (TFN) people can now log into a secure system to see details of their active accounts, as well as any lost super and super that the ATO holds on their behalf.

You will need a notice of assessment or super account member statement (from any of the past five financial years) and bank account details, a PAYG payment summary, a dividends statement or a Centrelink payment summary (from either of the past two financial years). Tax file number (TFN) – key to super One of the best ways Karratha residents can avoid having lost super is to make sure their super fund has their TFN. Changes have been made to the use of TFNs by super funds, making it easier to keep track of and transfer super and to find any lost super or super the ATO holds on a person’s behalf. To take full advantage of these changes people should check they have provided their TFN to their super fund, which is indicated on their super fund member statement. Another way people can avoid lost super is by making sure they provide their TFN to their employer when they start a new job. Overview of the reforms The Government reforms to super are designed to help protect and grow the savings of all Australians – even if they don’t take an active interest in managing their super. The changes are progressively coming into place over the next seven years and include: • More super for low income earners • If you earn $37,000 or less per year, you may be eligible to receive a boost to your super of up to $500 annually.

• Business workshop - June 2012

Ngarda shares its knowledge with African delegates More than 35 directors and government officials from 11 African nations visited Ngarda Civil and Mining this week as part of an AusAid study tour aimed at helping exchange experiences and implement mining governance measures. The delegates represented peak mining and resource companies and regulatory bodies from Zambia, Mozambique, Ghana, Liberia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Namibia, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Malawi. They spent the afternoon learning about Aboriginal culture and how Ngarda maximises opportunities for Aboriginal people in civil construction and mining projects. “We were approached to share how we have used opportunities created by WA’s mining boom to build capacity and economic independence for Aboriginal people, particularly in remote communities,” chief executive officer Dan Tenardi said. “The significant expansion in the mining, oil and gas industries of many African nations provides opportunities for channeling the benefits to sustainable development for their own people. “As a mining company with a core purpose on providing continuing social and economic growth opportunities for Aboriginal people, we were able to share how we have achieved this over our 10 years of operation,” he said. Ngarda delivered presentations on the role of international bodies and government agencies in setting quality, safety and environment standards. It also highlighted the importance of government funding for the continuation of training initiatives for Aboriginal people.

• More super for working Australians

Ngarda then talked about how its services are structured and implemented to work with an understanding of Aboriginal culture.

A new electronic form is also available through the secure system so people can request a transfer of funds between accounts simply by filling in the form and submitting it online.

• From July 1, 2013 the compulsory super rate will increase progressively over six years to 12 per cent.

The study tour coincides with the recent announcement that Australia has been elected to the United Nations Security Council, a move strongly supported by African nations.

Because it is a secure system, people will need their tax file number (TFN) handy and information from two of the following documents to verify their identity and create a secure login.

• From July 1, 2013 the upper age limit for compulsory super is being removed – this means no matter how old you are, if you are working, you can still grow your super.

• Removal of the upper age limit

AusAID developed the tour, through the Australia-Africa Partnerships Facility and International Mining for Development Centre. 29 K

Mountain bikers turn out to learn new skills Burrup Mountain Bike Club held its first Mountain Bike Skills Clinics last weekend beginning October 20. The clinics were facilitated by Rock N Roll Mountain Biking from Perth and made possible by generous support from the Department of Sport and Recreation, Woodside and Aspen Parks. The weekend was designed to give club members and the community an opportunity to develop their mountain biking skills, whether they be children, newcomers or experienced riders. Saturday started in relative cool weather with a Sprockets clinic for 5 to 12-year-olds and as the day warmed this was followed by a ladies-only lesson in the fundamentals of mountain biking and later an open skills clinic before finishing with some tips in maintaining your bike. The evening wrapped up with a barbecue and some live music as the day returned to a

far more pleasant temperature. An early start on Sunday for Mark and Amanda from Rock N Roll and 12 keen riders saw another fundamentals of mountain biking session followed by two advanced sessions for experienced riders. Sunday also was wrapped up with a barbecue for participants. Despite the extreme heat over the weekend, 68 out of the 72 possible spots at the clinics were filled. Feedback from participants has all been positive with everybody having learnt a new skill and many keen on continuing that learning at future clinics – although they might hope for cooler weather next time.

November 4 sees the first BMBC Summer Twilight Series Race and an opportunity for skills clinic participants to put their learning to practice. Details of the Summer Twilight Series are available at home.spin.net.au/burrupmb/.

Broome hosted the annual North West Championships during the last week of the October school holidays with Australian Football teams from the Gascoyne, Pilbara and Kimberley competing in a round robin format. The Championships round off the V Swans Pilbara Academy season and are a chance for boys from Newman, Onslow, Tom Price, Port Hedland, Wickham, Roebourne, Karratha, Dampier and the Western Desert to demonstrate the knowledge their skills. Our two Pilbara teams playing under the Strikers and the Swans banners headed to Broome with three goals in mind; to showcase the Pilbara’s talent, to play Swans football and to demonstrate the skills they have learnt as part of the Swans. The Swans defended beautifully in all matches showing poise and control under pressure while the Strikers built their game around run and spread with both teams being a joy to watch. The Strikers won two from four matches while the Swans went home winless. Yet both teams were in positions to win three games each with only errant kicking costing them on the scoreboard. A number of players from the Strikers side coached by Ritchie Patching and Wayne Sharpe won

umpire and coach’s votes. These included Tom Price’s Bailey Scott Karratha’s Andrew Woods, Johnny Shaw, Tyler Sharpe, Cam Garret and Chris Hardwicke and Hedland’s Reece Coppin and Brayden Hackett. Swans players coached by Onlsow’s Justin Ayres and Roebourne’s Craig Jardine who caught the eye included Roebourne’s Brandon Munday and Preston Snook and Tom Price’s Craig Jones and John Black. Players from Karratha included Curtis Tully and Anthony Dunn, those from Wickham included Jayden Brown, and Hedland’s Jarred Win and Terry Bin Saad, while Newman’s best included Sachin Barr and Terry Simpson. A special mention to the Cook, Tully, Walker, Garratt, Sharpe, Patching, Butler and other families who lent a hand to the coaches and players throughout the carnival with a huge hail to bus driver John Roach. Looking ahead, the successful AFL Western Australian North West program, which saw the North West’s inaugural team take out the Division 3 premiership in Sydney will be run again in 2013. The squad will be selected from members of this championship. Selected players will begin their High Performance Program in January finishing with the AFL 16’s Championships once again in Sydney during July with the V Swans Pilbara Talent Academy ramping up again in March.

“Honestly, we never really considered getting married in the heat,” said Mel. “Our family were visiting for our sons first birthday so we thought we’d throw in a surprise wedding.” Alan and Mel said they would highly recommend planning a wedding in the Pilbara. “It’s so much easier that trying to plan a wedding in Perth, over east or overseas. “We have some beautiful locations [in the Pilbara] like Cossack, Dampier or even a ‘red dirt wedding’ on a station would be completely unique.” Alan says the best part of getting married in Dampier is showing off the region they love. “Being able to show off the region to our families, some of whom have never visited

before,” said Alan. “We’re pretty proud to call Karratha home and want as many people to know about the lifestyle and opportunity it offers. “We’ve also saved a lot of money - Probably about half the cost of having a wedding in Perth.” “And there’s kind of an ‘ongoing’ reception all weekend - we’re starting off at Dampier Mermaid, followed by Thai Lanna in Dampier. “Jang and her team are decking the place out just for our wedding reception. “We’ve rented a bus, the reception goes all weekend and we will visit lots of places around town.” Alan and Mel plan to spend their 25th wedding anniversary touring the world after their four future children have grown up.

Time to Plan Your dream has come true. It’s time to plan the Wedding. Bridesmaids, Dress, shoes, jewellery, venue, flowers - the list goes on. Flowers can play a very important part in the overall wedding theme. From Church and Venue decorations to the important Bridal bouquet. Beautiful flowers add colour, fragrance, visual impact and decoration to any occasion especially your Wedding. When you are deciding on your wedding date, take time to check the seasonal flowers which will be available at that time of the year to avoid disappointment. For example, if you have always wanted a tulip bouquet , you would need to be married in the cooler months of the year. With the advancement in horticulture, most flowers are available year round, but can be very expensive out of season and sometimes not of excellent quality. In our hot Pilbara climate, it is also wise to consider the temperature as all flowers will wilt in the heat even in the winter months when taken out of air conditioning. Another problem can be the venue, if travelling a distance out of Karratha. Exmouth and Coral Bay are now common wedding destinations, so travelling with fresh fragile flowers over such a long distance must be considered. A very popular alternative to fresh flowers in our hot climate is beautiful silk flowers. Silk flowers are no longer the plastic roses from years gone by. Now made from top quality fabric and silk, flowers look very realistic and can also come in a real touch option. Most varieties of flowers and foliage are available in silk or fabric and are sometimes used more successfully in intricate floral designed bouquets. Another positive reason is as a lasting keepsake of your big day. Regardless of your choice in fresh or silk flowers, be sure to make an early appointment

with your Florist for a Bridal Consultation. Your Florist will then be able to discuss your plans in detail. To assist with your Consultation bring along any floral designs you prefer and fabric swatches to match dress colours if needed and any ideas of your Theme. Your florist is trained in colour and decoration and can assist with suggestions for your style or theme. The latest bridal accessory from Europe is the Bridal Bag or Brooch Bouquet. A beautiful way to add sparkle and can incorporate a special family keepsake. Our Studio has access to new products and can assist with sourcing many items for your wedding. Candles, shells, beads and vases can be a beautiful and budget conscious option for decorating the tables and venue. At Karratha Florist, our staff are professionally trained in intensive bridal work and have many ideas to assist our Clients in making the most important day of their lives beautiful. Diamonds are Forever No other gemstone has so much written about them, or so many songs sang about them. The little pieces of eternity are the talk of town when it comes to engagement and wedding bands. And so many people have so many “expert” advise on what to look for in this brilliant little sparkly pieces that are a girl’s best friend. But what should we be looking at when we go shopping for a diamond? When I did our research online I got snowed under letters and numbers and lost my way in diamond land. Time to ask the experts. Dirk Telkamp, from Nickol Bay Jewellery, explains: “When it comes to buying a diamond you really should not get confused about all the expert jargon that’s available. You should ask yourself “Do I like this particular ring?” Then the style is correct for you. For the quality of the diamond

just keep in mind that a well cut diamond sparkles beautifully. Does the diamond you are looking at show any other colour then white? (i.e. a little yellow or grey shadow?) If not your colour selection is correct. Can you see any ‘spot’ or ‘specks’ in the diamond? If not your clarity is correct! Does your diamond sparkle, has no colour and no spots and do you like the style? Congratulations, you are on a winner!” Diamonds these days come in a range of different colours and shapes. The times that the best diamonds had to be white are long gone. There are white, yellow, champagne, cognac, pink (which are by far the rarest) and even black diamonds. “They are all amazing in their own right and it’s just a matter of personal taste what colour you would pick”, says Dirk. “It’s the same with the shape they come in. Pick what suits you best and you will have a treasure for life”.
