They attended a house in Millars Well where they again witnessed two male persons fighting. The officers attempted to separate and calm both parties down but as soon as Police intervened, the two tried to run away. While being arrested, the two offenders struggled and continued to obstruct Police.

During the arrest, one of the juveniles punched one of the officers twice in the face. The injuries received by the officer were minor injuries causing bruising and swelling to her right temple and cheek. The two juveniles were charged with assault and disorderly by fighting.

Suspiciously lit ﬁre burns 10 hectares near residential area By Tamara Binamat Local fire and emergency crews were called to a fire burning on the corner of Dampier Highway and Bathgate Road in Karratha on Wednesday afternoon. The fire burnt a considerable area of scrub, and Superintendent at the Department of Fire and Emergency Services Pilbara, John Newman, said the fire appears to be suspiciously ignited. Mr Newman said the local department received many calls from the public and was first alerted around 3:35pm. “It was contained but not controlled reasonably quickly,” said Newman.

New backers to reﬁnance Port Hedland resort By Ben Leahy A consortium of investors is keen to get Port Hedland’s The Landing resort accommodation project back on track after submitting financing plans to the receiver last Wednesday November 7. The $150 million precinct, located opposite the Port Hedland airport, is a showcase project designed to accommodate resource workers, business travellers and tourists. But it recently came to a halt when developer Port Village Accommodation ran into financial trouble. On November 1, BHP Billiton appointed Ernst & Young as receivers to help it reclaim its investment in the project from Port Village Accommodation. The Pilbara Echo understands that on November 7 Ernst & Young finalised a list outlining which companies were owed money by Port Village Accommodation. Port Hedland Chamber of

Commerce managing secretary Arnold Carter said this allowed a consortium of backers to then submit a proposal to refinance the project. “There has been a proposal submitted to the receiver from certain persons that has sufficient money to enable the finalisation of all debtors and the completion of the project,” Mr Carter said. Mr Carter hopes that, if approved by the receiver, the new consortium will be able to complete The Landing resort by mid-2013. He said that, because The Landing resort was one of the few major projects fully financed by private developers, it was important for investor confidence that it be seen through to completion. “It is very important we encourage independent developers to invest in Port Hedland because relying on government funding is not a way to develop a city,” Mr Carter said.

Teens in serious condition after tragic motorbike accident A 15 and 16-year-old boy were seriously injured in a trailbike accident last weekend on a designated off-road area in Karratha. Acting Senior Sargeant Peter Clements said that on the evening of Friday, November 2 the Karratha

locals came to the crest of a hill when, for unknown reasons, the two riders collided. The teenagers were airlifted to Perth with the Royal Flying Doctors Service where they received treatment for serious injuries.

Prospector found after night in the bush By Tamara Binamat A man prospecting with a friend near Marble Bar went missing last weekend, prompting a search by local Police and rescue crews. The 62-year-old man was last seen 10am Sunday

near the Comet Gold Mine before the friends became separated. Police and SES volunteers searched for the man’s car on Sunday, but the missing man was not with his car when the vehicle was located later that same day.

Rescue crews continued searching Monday morning; the man was located around 8am, one kilometre from his car. The man was found to be slightly dehydrated and taken to Marble Bar Nursing Post for a check-up.

Woodside, as operator of Karratha Gas Plant (KGP) and Pluto LNG, takes seriously its commitment to responsible environmental management. Flaring is an essential process for safe operations of a gas plant and is normal industry practice. Recently you may have noticed some dark smoke flaring from KGP. This is because the Operations Flare is temporarily out-of-service. Hydrocarbons that usually go through the Operations Flare have been temporarily diverted to the Main Flare Tower, during which time the KGP is more susceptible to dark smoke flaring. Our focus is to safely and efficiently complete the work on the Operations Flare to minimise the risk of any dark smoke flaring, while maintaining safe and reliable operations.

At Pluto LNG we are continuing to focus on safe and efficient commissioning activities. You will have noticed a reduction in flaring as the plant nears the final stage of the transition into normal operations. From time-to-time you may still notice increased flaring but these events will continue to reduce in frequency and length as the commissioning phase of the project nears completion.

Crocodile sightings are recorded and assessed on a caseby-case basis for further action by DEC staff. Saltwater crocodiles are protected under the Wildlife Conservation Act and may not be killed or taken from the wild, or kept in captivity without a license. Sightings of saltwater crocodiles in the Onslow area should be reported to DEC on 9182 2000.

The Department of Environment and Conservation is asking Onslow residents and visitors to be on alert following a confirmed sighting of a saltwater crocodile in Beadon Creek. The two to three-metre crocodile was first spotted last week near the mooring area, upstream from the boat launching area, and was confirmed by authorities on Tuesday. DEC wildlife officer Chris Roy said officers would conduct boat patrols in the area later this week, and he encouraged people to report any further sightings to DEC or local Police. “There are warning signs in the area and people need to exercise caution and take care around Beadon Creek and when using other waterways in the region,” he said. “Saltwater crocodiles live in coastal rivers and swamps and often occur in the open sea and around islands. “They also extend well inland

New recruits sign up for the Army’s Pilbara Regiment By Ben Leahy The Australian Army’s Pilbara Regiment welcomed eight new Army Reserve soldiers into its ranks at a small ceremony on its Karratha base last Saturday November 3. The new part-time recruits passed a 16-day induction course that included training in weapons handling, vehicle operations and navigation. They can now continue training with the regiment and start taking part in surveillance operations throughout the North West.

The Australian Defence Force’s second most senior officer will touch down in Karratha this Sunday November 11 to gain a better understanding of security issues in the region. Vice chief of the Defence Force Air Marshal Binskin will tour Woodside’s Pluto LNG plant, a nitrate plant, view infrastructure near the port of Dampier and meet with the Australian Army’s Pilbara Regiment. Air Marshal Binskin said his visit is part of the ADF’s increased focus on the Indian Ocean and Australia’s northern approaches. “[My visit] gives me a good chance to get up to date with what is happening in the resource and minerals area up there because, while [the region] is of economic importance to Australia, it is very much of a strategic importance as well,” Air Marshal Binskin said. Air Marshal Binskin’s visit comes at a time when some politicians, such as Liberal Senator for Western Australia, Alan Eggleston, have been calling for a larger defence force presence in the Pilbara. “It has taken a long time for the ADF to recognise that its current protection of Western Australia’s North West is lacking, with ADF Chief General Hurley admitting during May Estimates that their ‘attention had been elsewhere over the last decade’,” Senator Eggleston said last month. But Air Marshal Binskin rejected the idea that the ADF had neglected the Pilbara. “We are around the North West day in day out … but it is low visibility,” he said. “What we need to do is just make people more aware of what

we do up there. “[Greater visibility] might make it better for people around the rigs or the resource area to have an understanding of what is around them. Air Marshal Binskin said the ADF conducts border patrol and fisheries operations in the area, while the Pilbara Regiment undertakes regular reconnaissance and surveillance exercises. “You are [also] going to see more exercise activity around the North West, there is no doubt about it,” Air Marshal Binskin said. “There is nothing precluding us having exercises with US forces or other regional forces down around the North Western area [like] we do in the Northern Territory. As well as multinational exercises, Air Marshal Binskin said the ADF wants to also maintain its technological edge in what has been termed the Asian Century by the Federal Government. Countries, such as China and India, are spending big on their militaries. “There is far higher capability in the militaries around the region,” Air Marshal Binskin. “That doesn’t make them a threat by the way, in many cases that makes them an ally. “But we do want to make sure we have a high end military and highly capable defence force because that does help us engage the region [and ensure security through stronger regional partnerships],” he added.

“The Pilbara Regiment is specifically focused on the trade of reconnaissance and surveillance,” Lt. Col. Omari said.

And with just 200 regimental personnel patrolling an area of approximately 1.4 million square kilometres, Lt. Col. Omari said Reservists are vitally important as they form the core of each patrol group.

Techtrails rolled into Karratha last week to treat more than 100 Karratha high school students to a day of technology, science and the worldwide web. Techtrails is an initiative set up by Women in Technology WA, a not-forprofit organisation that encourages high school students to consider careers in science and technology. Women in Technology WA member Adrianne Barba said it caters for students in regional WA and aims to inform them about opportunities in industries that they might not know about.

“That’s why we try get real people [in the industry] to come into the schools and speak to the students in small groups,” Ms Barba said. “It is giving them that chance to start thinking about what they might like to do and what sort of subjects they might be interested in.” Ms Barba said Techtrails spoke to more than 100 year nine students in Karratha, who were intrigued and asked lots of questions. “We got a lot of ‘I didn’t know that was actually a job’ [statements],” she said. Web and graphic designer Adrianne spoke to the children along

with a biologist and someone who works in lighting for concert events. “There was a big range of questions from: ‘Do you get to travel, and how much money do you make’,” she said. “But a lot of the questions were around, ‘Do you enjoy your job?’” “It really gave them an understanding of some of the jobs that are actually available.” Adrianne said the audio visual and lighting information was very popular with the students. The students rated the cybercrime, engineering and science sessions as the best presentations.

Premier to bring in tough penalties to protect endangered animals By Ben Leahy People who smuggle endangered animals in Western Australia could face much stiffer penalties if the Liberal Party wins State Elections next March. Premier Colin Barnett said the maximum fines for smuggling or harming Western Australia’s endangered animals would increase from $4,000 to $500,000 under the Liberal Party’s new biodiversity legislation. The Premier’s announcement on October 31 comes one month after a South Hedland man was fined $4,500 plus court costs for illegally possessing almost 100 reptiles and amphibians. Premier Barnett said the Liberal Party would introduce the legislation if they win reelection in March. “This new piece of legislation will replace the existing 62-yearold Wildlife Conservation Act,” Mr Barnett said. “Under the new act, deterrent penalties of up to $500,000 for harming a critically endangered species

and $50,000 for harming a nonthreatened species will apply.” The new act comes in response to a 2009 report by the WA Auditor General into the conservation of the State’s threatened species. But Shadow Environment Minister Sally Talbot said the Government had been slow to act on the report. “This new legislation comes too little, too late from the Barnett Government,” Dr Talbot said. “After four and half years in office and with six parliamentary sitting days left, the Government announces it will finally move on a report which was released in 2009. Conservation Council of WA director Piers Verstegen was more upbeat, however. “It is pleasing to see that the Barnett Government has made a firm commitment to updating our antique wildlife conservation laws,” Mr Verstegen said. “The current legislation has totally failed to protect our unique wildlife, and

Oil spill response exercise held of Ningaloo Reef By Ben Leahy The Australian Maritime Safety Authority recently conducted an oil response exercise off the Exmouth coast in partnership with members of the region’s oil and gas industry. AMSA and the oil and gas majors used the two-day exercise on October 16 and 17 to test the Fixed Wing Aerial Dispersant Contract. The FWADC is an oil spill response plan that involves deploying small planes, similar to crop dusters, to drop chemical dispersant on surface oil spills. The dispersant acts to break up the oil’s concentration and prevent it smothering shorelines and other surface areas of the ocean. In the October 16 mock exercise, Apache Energy assumed the role of the company that had suffered an oil spill. Andrew Best, Apache Energy’s oil spill response coordinator, said it was important to test the FWADC to ensure that all the procedures went according to plan. “Under our oil spill contingency plans we have step-by-step actions to do in the event of something going wrong,” Mr Best said. “So we were testing those communication processes as well as the function of the air dispersant application. Mr Best said that in the event of an oil spill, companies such as Apache Energy had a number of tools to tackle the incident.

The FWADC is only activated in incidents where 100 cubic metres or more of oil is released into the ocean. “We are aware that dispersant is a chemical,” Mr Best said. “When we put dispersant on an oil it takes the oil off the surface of the water by breaking down its molecular structure so it can then dissipate into the water column. “Then the currents of the ocean dissipate it further. “Now what dispersant does not do is take the oil away, it just drops it into the water column so it can disperse. “So we take that [and the nearby location of the sensitive reefs] into consideration and find out whether the dispersant application is a beneficial response. “If it is, then we activate the Fixed Wing Aerial Dispersant Contract. “If it is not then we will employ other methods such as running out booms and containing it in the open sea ... or by setting up protection booms around shorelines. The mock exercise on October 16 was deemed to be an occasion that warranted the activation of the FWADC. In that instance, Apache Energy’s first step was to notify AMSA of the mock spill and its location. They did that in the early hours of the morning on October 16. By that afternoon, AMSA

had mobilised its plane, support crews and fire and rescue teams at the appropriate Exmouth airstrip. The next day, the planes began to attack the mock oil SIZZLING spill with fresh water drops. Pilbara station owners will discuss new farming methods at a field day to be held at Yalleen Station and Millstream National Park this Tuesday November 13. Agricultural pioneer Peter Andrews and Dr Peter Russell from the WA Department of Agriculture and Food will discuss water management techniques and ways to increase carbon retention in the soil. Dr Bill Cotching from not-forprofit organisation Rangelands NRM said the field day was designed to help pastoral farmers manage their land better and increase productivity. “If you look at Dr Russell, he has shown by measurement that it is possible to build the level of carbon in the soil if you change management practices,” Dr Cotching said. Dr Cotching said increased carbon levels improved a soil’s structure and productivity by helping it to retain more moisture from rainfall. “Then you get a longer growing season, you grow more plant material [which leads to more carbon in the soil] and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy,” Dr Cotching said. “The more you do, the more you get. In the future, Pastoral farmers might even be able to sell the extra carbon for carbon credits.

However, Mr Cotching said before that happens, a number of policy hurdles will have to be overcome, such as deciding who owns the rights to the carbon credit. The confusion arises from that fact that many station owners do not actually own their lands but hold pastoral leases from the Government. In addition to talks on carbon retention, Peter Andrews will discuss water management practices. Mr Andrews attracted national attention in 2005 after he featured in a series of episodes on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Australian Story television program. Mr McGowan said Labor had plans for a new $54 million hospital in Newman and also supported Karratha’s new hospital.

“I don’t understand why they restricted it predominantly to the Wheatbelt of Western Australia and didn’t look further north.

“[But] there has to be more than just hospitals, there needs to be an effort to attract health professionals above that,” he said.

The Naturalist’ Corner: Spring is in the air...

It’s that time of year again when wildlife courtships have been well under way and little feathered families or scaly babies (this includes the turtles) are hatched. I’ve heard, and more recently seen, baby miners, butcherbirds, mudlarks, and pigeons voicing to their parents. The older offspring follow their parents around the garden. I’ve been seeing the first of the baby corellas that have fledged. They stand out from the rest of the flock by their snow white feathers and poor perching attempts. The big lizards are also back in my garden. It never ceases to surprise me though how at this time of year when things are in fact starting to dry out and there is hardly, if any, natural water sources left, that there is enough food around to raise families. Having humans put sprinklers on their lawns, on gardens and growing plants that flower and attract insects helps no end but there is still the harsh reality that not all the babies are going to survive. It’s just the way of life. The strongest and fittest survive. In the weeks to come the (feathered) parents will get sick of feeding the kids and start the weaning process, this will result in much begging, whinging and whining. I’m sure readers with an awareness of their backyard birds will have seen the mudlark and pigeon babies following the parents around with wings flapping, begging in earnest while parents ignore or chase them off.

• Snuggle buddies - Couckoo shrike babies with a white plumed honeyeater For birds, the time of fledging is a time when humans can sometimes intervene in the process, usually with good intentions. The week or two after the young leave the nest and start perching or following the parents is when they end up on the ground at some stage. This is when we humans think the parents have abandoned the young and go to the ‘rescue’ of the bird. Often, the baby is not actually abandoned but sitting waiting for the parents to come feed it. A classic example of this is the Australian magpie (not the mud lark). Rehabilitators advise people to observe the bird for a while before intervening, as the parents will show up. Another piece of advice is to put the young in a nearby tree up high enough out of the way of harm and the parents will still return. It is usually the sick that are abandoned and it is in this case the parents know and choose the strong chicks over the one on the ground.

Not only for the parrots but also for many other bird species along with the mammals and lizards this period is the time when most do not make it to adulthood, only about 10% do.

The belief that the parent birds will abandon the chick or nest if humans intervene or touch it is totally false and a fledgling can even be returned the next day and the parents will come to it.

The statistics are worse for the marine turtles, it’s estimated only one in 1000 hatchlings make it to adulthood.

If, after watching the chick for a while and there are no adults around or it’s getting attacked by ants or other birds, that’s the time to rescue it.

Ngarluma & Yindjibarndi Foundation Limited (NYFL) held their ‘Topping Out’ ceremony on Wednesday, November 7, to mark the framework completion of their first house in Sholl Street, Roebourne. Although currently contracting John Bamman as their builder, NYFL have established a construction company, NYFL Housing & Construction Pty Ltd, which will soon be fully licenced to take on the house construction. While we are going to continue to offer our Kinder Dance, Pre-Primary and Primary Classes that are based on RAD syllabi, the Angelina Ballerina Classes will sit alongside these. Our Kinder Dance classes are based on imaginative movement sequences such as going to the Circus, the Moon, Under the Sea, Treasure Island and so on. These classes cater for both boys and girls. The Angelina Classes will be linked back to the popular stories and come with a booklet helping students understand ballet etiquette. Behaviour such as coming to class with a neat ballet bun will be rewarded through a sticker system. It’s certainly more directed at little girls in tutus, but doesn’t exclude boys. Students give water saving tips to schools Year 5 students from the Pilbara Primary Extension and Academic Challenge for gifted students are tackling their latest challenge and looking for ways to reduce water usage and bills at Karratha and Dampier primary schools.

Water Corporation Regional Manager Peter McAlister said the student’s work was valuable as it resulted in simple and practical water-saving advice for Principals and highlighted the benefits of smart water meters.

The group studied water use during term three at five schools – Millars Well Primary, Karratha Primary, Tambrey Primary, Pegs Creek Primary and Dampier Primary.

“The students presented their findings to each of the school principals, our Water Efficiency project officer Robyn Gulliver, regional education officers from the Department of Education and parents.

Challenge organiser Annemaree Doyle said the students came up with a number of recommendations on how the schools could be more water efficient. “These included checking the irrigation to ensure it suited the school’s gardens and turf, and appointing student Waterwise Councillors to regularly check the school for leaks and encourage water efficient practices,” Ms Doyle said. “The students first carried out special water audits at each school to look for leaking appliances, and then they analysed water use data gathered from the schools new smart water meters.”

Mr McAlister, the principal from the new Baynton West Primary School, also came to listen. “They did a great job and deserve a huge pat on the back for their hard work,” Mr McAlister said. Mr McAlister said the challenge was timely given that smart meters were soon to be installed by the Water Corporation at every property in the West Pilbara. “Just like these students, you too will soon be able to monitor your own water use and learn where you can make some important savings,” he said.

Senior students at Karratha Primary School, Devyn Harmon, Ella-Rose Tatnell and Nicholas Middleton wrote a song titled Music is a Part of Me with their music teacher earlier in the year which was entered into the Music: Count Us In song writing competition and was one of a selected few songs to be highly commended. Millars Well Primary School in Karratha had 450 students participating in the program, which concluded with the singing of the song Different People (Stand Together). Millars Well students learnt the song and actions, as well as watched short films on the making and recording of the song during their music lessons. Morning Sickness By Sarah Penrose Morning sickness is experienced by approximately 60% of expecting ladies and contrary to its name, can occur at any time of day. Generally experienced between week 4 and 16 of pregnancy, morning sickness can be a result of the changes and adjustments in hormone levels and the immune system. Low blood sugars can also aggravate morning sickness; so keeping blood sugars at even levels throughout the day can be helpful in alleviating morning sickness. If you are experiencing morning sickness you could try eating small, regular meals throughout the day, staring as soon as you wake up, perhaps nibbling on a few crackers before getting out of bed. Ensure adequate amounts of ‘good quality’ protein such as lean red meat, chicken, eggs, nuts and seeds are being consumed. It may be helpful to temporarily eliminate saturated fats from your diet as these may exacerbate morning sickness. Saturated fats are found in cheese, butter and fatty meat. Walking, swimming and yoga, moderate and gentle exercise can also be helpful. Homeopathic medicines can be of real benefit in morning sickness. Homeopathic medicines are selected on

New iPhone app helps you take your antibiotics on time, every time Do you struggle to take your antibiotics correctly? NPS has launched a new free app for the iPhone and iPad designed to help people take their antibiotics correctly and prevent antibiotic resistance. The new ‘Antibiotics Reminder’ app allows you to set reminders for each dose of antibiotics, track whether doses are taken correctly and record progress in a daily recovery diary. Released as part of a broader campaign to fight antibiotic resistance in the Australian community, NPS clinical adviser Dr Danielle Stowasser says the new app will help people be more “medicinewise” when it comes to their antibiotics. “Taking antibiotics correctly is important both for the health of the individual and the health of the community,” says Dr Stowasser. “If you are prescribed antibiotics, take them exactly as directed by your health professional, even if you are feeling better. “If you have a bacterial infection and you miss a dose you may not have the right amount of antibiotic in your body to kill the bacteria causing your infection.



Big clean up at Roebourne’s training institute Fortescue Metals Group and Pilbara Institute volunteers rolled up their sleeves in late October to help tidy up Roebourne’s Minurmarghali Mia vocational training campus. More than 30 volunteers turned up at the Pilbara Institute facility, including Fortescue’s general manager port, Gerhard Veldsman, VTEC development manager, Damien Ardagh and the Pilbara Institute’s director corporate services, Craig Holland.

The campus is the Pilbara Institute’s major training and education facility in Roebourne as well as the Roebourne arm of Fortescue’s Vocational, Training and Employment Centre operations. Mr Ardagh said the working bee was a great success with the team shrugging off soaring temperatures to tidy up the grounds and gardens and replace damaged fencing and paving. “It was wonderful to see so many people take time out

Gap Ridge fuelling new services in Karratha The release of a key site on Dampier Highway at the Gap Ridge Industrial Estate will deliver much needed services to the estate and region. Developed by LandCorp as part of the State Government’s Pilbara Cities initiative, Gap Ridge provides land to support major resource projects including Gorgon, Wheatstone and Pluto, allowing local businesses to expand and new businesses to commence in the region. stock because we had to demolish our old properties to put our new ones in, but it meant that rather than spending $1,500 for a dump, families will spend $2,600 for a nice property.”

Port Hedland rental prices have eased slightly after hitting record highs last quarter, according to Jan Ford, the Real Estate Institute of Western Australia’s Pilbara spokesperson.

“So that is why the number of rentals available is not that much higher but the average cost goes up – because we have lifted the standard of our rentals.

Last month, the Pilbara Development Commission released its latest land snapshot in which it found that the average rental price in Port Hedland hit $2,544 in the September quarter, up nearly 20 per cent on the June quarter.

However, Ms Ford expects prices will ease as more houses come back into the market, including 30 properties currently occupied by employees of a harbour dredging company soon to finish its project. She also added that the Hedland market annually slows over summer as the cyclone season halts a number of construction projects.

South Hedland rental prices at an average of $1,920 were up almost 10 per cent on the earlier quarter. But Ms Ford, who also owns her own real estate business in Port Hedland, said the town’s rental prices have since eased off by about 20 per cent for older properties and 10 per cent for modern homes.

But she also said that this is likely to just be a lull before the storm. She sees housing prices climbing strongly in the medium term to match increased iron ore output from Hedland’s port.

“That is why I think [investors] should buy right now,” Ms Ford said.

Since 2005, the amount of cargo passing through the port has grown from approximately 110 million tonnes to 250 million tonnes.

“We’ve now got a slowing down while we get ready to ramp up for the next onslaught.”

Ms Ford said: “At the moment we only have one industry here in Port Hedland, and if no other industry takes up the demand [for housing], then developers will not build.” Developers need to see five-to-

Ms Ford said prices can only be controlled if there is an overarching plan to match housing, education and health needs to the number of major resource projects in the area. “We kept approving all this major industry expansion but we forgot to plan our towns at the same time,” Ms Ford said. “If you don’t plan your schools, your towns, your demographics, the services and all the support industries for the construction and mining projects then the outcome is high rent and unaffordable living standards. One of the side affects is that real estate agents are not always popular, according to Ms Ford.

“It is like running a shop and you get a carton of Coca-Cola, yet you’ve got 500 people wanting a cold can,” she said. “Then your gas goes in your fridge. “Now if I could have a whole truckload of Coca-Cola and gas piped to my fridge so that everyone could get a can, I would be a much happier person. “In other words, I would much rather sell a thousand houses at $200,000 each than 100 houses at $2 million each. “If houses were cheaper, we would all buy more. “Then we could have strong businesses and build our population. That might even attract East Coast residents and city dwellers, who ring Ms Ford regularly with hopes of moving to the Pilbara. “[Except] when they find out what the cost of a house is, they think we have added an extra zero to the price … and that changes their minds quite quickly.”

Over the same period, average rental prices in Port Hedland have increased five-fold.

Ms Ford said the record rental prices had been driven by an infl ux of workers employed at a number of new short-term construction projects. “We also had newer houses for rent,” Ms Ford said.

With Port Hedland hoping to process close to 500 million tonnes of cargo in the coming years, prices can only go up, according to Ms Ford.

“RELAX BY THE POOL”

By Sean Smith, Karratha My wife brought home a war movie, knowing I have a strong interest in the subject of World War 2. I would’ve preferred to watch Saving Private Ryan for the tenth time, than endure Miracle at St. Anna. The movie is based on four African American soldiers, called “Buffalo Soldiers”, African American army regiments that date back to 1866. This particular regiment of four young soldiers is based in Italy during WW2. The movie starts off in 1983, based around one of the four soldiers as an older man. He randomly shoots a customer in the post office, where he works as a postal worker. The movie then flashes back to WW2, Italy in 1944. This is where things go a bit strange. The actual story had the potential to be incredibly interesting, however, it is totally let down by the execution. During the battle scenes, the acting and so-called “blood and gore” effects where

laughable. Afterward, the story takes a weird turn. One of the main characters carries around a stolen head from a statue from Florence, which is reportedly worth a fortune. He continually rubs it like a good luck charm, believing it makes him invisible to the enemy. He meets a delusional and injured eight-year old boy from the local town. Fast forward to 1984. The now elderly man faces court proceedings for the murder he committed. I toyed with the idea of ejecting the DVD, placing it in an envelope and posting it to Spike Lee, with the title What is This Garbage? I started falling asleep during this movie; that kind of says it all. I was yawning half way through it. My dog started yawing too and threw me a glance as if to say, “So who was the clown that chose that movie?” I looked at my dog then covertly pointed my finger towards my wife and quietly whispered back, “It was her”.

Fillies and studs adorned the Pilbara’s social sets on Melbourne Cup Day 2012, filling venues and workplaces all over the region. The Pilbara Echo made it to the traditional TAB in Karratha at Ibis Styles hotel to catch the punters before the big race, and then ventured to “the place to be seen”, The Icon restaurant, Karratha. The Icon had over 230 guests for lunch and drinks and after the big race partygoers were treated to a fashion parade hosted by Cool Change and live music in the alfresco area. Green Moon took out first place at the $6.2 million Emirates Melbourne Cup at Flemington, much to the delight of obvious winners in Karratha. Brett Prebble, a Victorian-raised, Hong Kongbased jockey, who is now one of the stars of the world circuit, produced a gem of a ride to provide leading owner Lloyd Williams with his fourth win in the race when Green Moon defeated longshots Fiorente and Jakkalberry.

The Pilbara’s newest duo unveiled at huge Melbourne Cup show By Tamara Binamat Cindy Newhouse and Bryan Retter are one of the latest music duos in the region to wow huge crowds. Performing on Melbourne Cup Day afternoon at the Icon, they rocked to an audience of over 230 punters. You would never have guessed, but Cindy, on vocals, had only ever performed in front of an audience four times before her set on Tuesday. “The crowd was fantastic! We had a variety of music to play; we had Adele, Cold Chisel, Guns n Roses … there was something for everyone to enjoy.” Cindy has never been involved in a live band before, but feedback

from the gig proved she was a natural performer. “I actually auditioned for Australian Idol back in 2004, I made it to the top 120 and that’s all my singing!” she said. “It’s a buzz! Officially I’ve only had five gigs with Bryan.” “I used to be the one that used to get on the dancefloor and get into the groove and now I’m actually the one out there performing.” Cindy said she wasn’t nervous at all before the show, in fact before the gig she had a regular day at work, picked her daughter up from school, then went straight on stage. She has the concert bug now and can’t wait to perform in front of a crowd again. “It’s the adrenaline, the buzzing, the atmosphere and the feedback you get from the crowd that makes it pretty worthwhile.”

Reporting directly to the Maintenance Manager you’ll be responsible for supporting the maintenance team and taking charge of electrical long-term planning. As the successful candidate for this role, you’ll have previous experience in a similar position, hold an A Grade Electrical license and have demonstrated experience within planning and scheduling. You’ll have solid exposure to computerised maintenance management systems and a strong electrical background. These positions are for trade qualified Heavy Duty Fitters working in the metro area in Perth working Monday to Friday, and FIFO positions throughout the Pilbara region on 2:1 rosters. As a HD Fitter, you’ll use your diagnostic skills to provide service and ongoing maintenance to earthmoving gear such as loaders, graders, dozers and dump trucks, working specifically on CAT, Komatsu and Hitachi. It’s essential that you hold a trade qualification (Cert III Automotive – Heavy Vehicle) and a HR License is preferable but not required. With both local and FIFO roles available, this is an opportunity for you to progress your career, working in a supportive team with a leading mining contractor.

As the Underground Trainer, you’ll be involved with training the crew on all underground equipment. You’ll maintain and develop all training procedures, training matrix and all related paperwork. You’ll utilise your expertise and knowledge to teach and up skill your crew while working closely with the Safety Manager on improvements or changes required in your area. This role requires you to possess Cert IV in TAA or TAE and previous experience as an Underground Operator and Trainer on all mobile plant equipment. A Cert IV in OHS would be highly regarded but is not essential.

Family Day is back again for 2012. This popular annual fishing competition caters for fishers and families with many great prizes for everyone. The Nickol Bay Sportfishing Club invites all to enter the event on Sunday November 25. Local businesses have again donated to the competition and there are prizes worth thousands of dollars on offer for the lucky anglers. In addition, the Nickol Bay Sportfishing Club is hosting a special mackerel bait and rigging evening next Wednesday November 14 at 7pm.
