Last week Karratha Police arrested two juveniles for trespassing on a property in Nickol. The two had jumped a fence to a property that was vacant at the time. The juveniles took the opportunity of no one being home to jump in the swimming pool. The children were heard messing about in the pool by neighbours who then called Police. Karratha Police attended the house and took the children back to their homes where their parents were waiting.

Community appeal to bring Piggy home Between 10:30pm on Friday November 2 and 7pm on Monday November 5, 2012 unknown offenders forced entry into the bar area of the Karratha Bowling Club and stole a much-loved member. It is alleged locks on the roller door were cut open with a grinder and beloved member “Piggy” the blue fundraising elephant was stolen. Karratha

appealed to the robbers in a public flyer, stating “To the robbers. If you have not killed Piggy please leave him somewhere, send us a message, email or blocked call to let us know where he is so we can pick him up and bring him home.” Piggy is described as 40 centimetres high with a nice big tummy to collect donations. Plans released for new Mulataga suburb Mirvac and Landcorp last week lodged the development plan for Karratha’s new Mulataga residential community. The Mulataga Development Plan includes two kilometres of coastal frontage along Nickol Bay and will eventually comprise up to 2,000 residential dwellings with a mix of housing choices. The Development Plan was created following a series of community consultations earlier this year with local residents, key stakeholders and businesses. Mirvac national general manager of resource partnerships, Evan Campbell, said Mulataga would be an innovative development that would help Karratha make the step from regional town to city. “Mulataga will be one of the first projects to be developed under the new Pilbara Cities initiative, and as such we are looking to set the bar high,” Mr Campbell said. “The Development Plan

CPP20211

provides a framework for us to ensure we deliver a community that everyone can be proud of, and that will serve the needs of the population now and into the future.” The Development Plan outlines four elements of design. These include improved amenity and lifestyle choices, the creation of activity nodes to help the community grow, development of residential villages and the delivery of high quality public open spaces. Mr Campbell said the integration of these elements is key to creating a thriving community. “One of the main highlights of this plan is it provides a means to connect the community with the coastline,” he said. “[We will] create a scenic drive along the Mulataga Foreshore to the coastal node, and there will also be plenty of pedestrian access available to encourage walking and cycling,” he said.

“We are also thinking ahead to future infrastructure needs by creating an east-west transit link, designed to accommodate the future provision of public transport. “The coastal node will comprise approximately 500sqm of retail floor space and is to become a popular hub for shopping and dining alongside the waters of Nickol Bay. “Mulataga will have a coastal look and feel, inspired by the natural beauty of its surroundings,” he said. Mirvac is yet to finalise details, such as pricing and lot sizes, for the first stage of the Mulataga development, but expects to release further information in early 2013. Mulataga is part of the $1.5 billion Karratha City of the North development, which also includes a rejuvenation of the town centre to include a new commercial and retail hub, known as The Quarter.

Several communities in the Pilbara have recently been the target of unfortunate attacks of vandalism, including graffiti attacks at the $3 million Mara Guthurra Playground in Baynton West, Karratha, damage to property at Newman tennis courts and a chemical attack on Hedland’s first water-play park. On Sunday November 4 families arrived at Mara Guthurra Playground in Karratha to find it had been vandalised over the weekend. St Lukes College students, (rather than St Pauls Primary students as recently believed) along with the contractor who maintains the park, cleaned the graffiti at the 5,400sqm playground. The latest reports of vandalism in Newman include a smashed light cover on the tennis courts and smashed glass bottles on the court. Six bins were ripped from their bases; nine newly established trees destroyed with 23 trees in total sustaining damage. Other recent damage in Newman includes a skate park bin set alight and a smashed

door at the new cricket clubroom. “The Shire of East Pilbara has zero tolerance for vandalism and I urge all members of our community to report information about vandals to the police,” said Shire of East Pilbara Chief Executive Officer Allen Cooper. “Vandalism is not a victimless crime. Those who live in an area affected by vandalism are often left feeling unsafe in their community, which is something we will not tolerate. “Additionally, vandalism often results in the closure of community facilities due to safety concerns,” he said. Shire President Lynne Craigie was also vocal on the effect of vandalism on the community. “The cost of vandalism has a real financial impact on the Shire and to use council funds repairing willful damage to property is a financial burden borne on all rate payers,” she said. Two cases of vandalism in one week in Hedland have caused the delay of the official opening of Hedland’s first water-play park, Marquee Park - Splash & Play, which was scheduled for Sunday

December 2. Offenders trespassed into the park, which is still a construction site, and poured chemical material over the splash pad causing a high level of damage to the majority of works completed in that area. In a second case, offenders broke into the caretaker’s facility and flooded the residence, causing hundreds to thousands of dollars worth of damage to the property. Mayor Kelly Howlett expressed her disappointment towards the vandalism and the offenders. “The community has been waiting for Marquee Park to open for a long time, and the Town was very excited at being able to announce the opening date,” said Cr Howlett. “However, the actions of a few individuals have caused the disappointment of the entire community. “This is not the first time the park has been vandalised and Council is saddened at the fact that offenders chose to target Marquee Park. She reminded all community members the park is still a construction site and entering the site without permission is not allowed. The Town of Port Hedland will be working with contractors on developing a new works program and opening date. “With the majority of the splash pad damaged, it is expected the area may need to be removed and reinstalled, which can take up to a number of weeks. Following the installation of the splash pad, there will need to be a period of time set aside to conduct a series of water tests to ensure Marquee Park is of the highest quality and standards for opening to the community,” Mayor Howlett said. She added that repairs to the caretaker’s facility is anticipated to take many weeks, dependent on availability of workers and resources.

component of it.”

Dampier Highway is getting a beauty makeover as part of the Shire of Roebourne’s plans to install more public art and gardens around Karratha.

“We are trying to demonstrate that Karratha is here to stay.”

The Shire last week planted native and tropical plants and erected three major artworks at highway roundabouts at Balmoral Road West, Bathgate Road and Galbraith Road. Shire chief executive officer Chris Adams, project manager Geoff Shoemark and artist Lorenna Grant turned out for the official unveiling on November 14 whereby a crane hauled Ms Grant’s artwork, inspired by the local mulla mulla flower, into place. Mr Adams said the artworks would help build a town identity and a sense of permanency. “Karratha has been around for 45 years now and it has a sense of temporariness to it,” Mr Adams said. “When Pilbara Cities was looking at how do we actually transform and make cities, public art and creating a sense of place is a key

Mr Adams said the Shire had been planning the public artworks for the past two years, first inviting submissions from artists around the globe, and then having local residents choose the winning designs. “Locally based people picked them, so it wasn’t some person from out of town who picked them,” Mr Adams said. He added that all the artworks, such as Ms Grant’s mulla mulla inspired work have a Karratha feel about them. Ms Grant said she had tried to create a work that would blend in with Karratha’s environment but also add a touch of femininity. “I have travelled through Karratha and the Burrup quite a lot … and I noticed all the mulla mulla and sturt peas in flower,” Ms Grant said. “[But also] I was thinking of this landscape and the culture that has been imposed on it because of

mining and how it is a largely masculine culture. “I just wanted to show that there is a feminine and masculine energy in this landscape. It is notoriously tricky to please everybody when it comes to public art, but Mr Adams is unconcerned. “Whether people like or hate the public art is not the point as far as I am concerned,” he said. “It is about creating … a talking point, and it is great to see people are talking about it.

Oakajee port development put on hold By Ben Leahy There is continued uncertainty over future investments in Western Australia’s resources sector after plans to develop the $6 billion Oakajee port and rail project north of Geraldton were put on hold last week. Oakajee was being developed by Japanese trading house Mitsubishi to service its also delayed Jack Hills iron ore project. The announcement follows BHP Billiton’s postponing of its Outer Harbour development in Port Hedland and cost-cutting measures by Fortescue Metals Group in its Pilbara operations. However, with weakening economic conditions across the globe, Premier Colin Barnett has stepped in to try and restore investment confidence in the North’s resources sector. Premier Barnett told reporters last week that he expects Oakajee and the Jack Hills iron ore mine to be put back on track.

He

he

was

confident

For many Geraldton residents looking to profit from Oakajee, the drawn out saga is losing its lustre.

“The Shire has a policy that one per cent of all capital works projects will be spent on public art,” Mr Adams said.

Geraldton resident Rachel Stephens said she built her house in the north of Geraldton after hearing talk for more than a decade of Oakajee being developed as a port. “I built my house here two years ago … I’m in the most northern suburb of Geraldton,” Ms Stephens said.

For the majority of Industry it will continue to be business as usual.

“[But now] no one is holding their breath because Oakajee has been talked about for such a long time that everyone is a bit sick of hearing about it really. “I’m [now] selling my house for personal reasons but if [I knew] Oakajee was going to happen, I would love to keep hold of it because I’m sure Oakajee will send house values, especially in my area, through the roof,” she said.

Did you know Australia’s domestic maritime laws are changing? From 2013 the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) will become the National Regulator for domestic commercial vessel safety in Australian waters and a new National System will commence operations.

“This is a great spot if Oakajee happened because it would be great for people to live here and just drive 20 kilometres up the road – that is one of the reasons I built my house here.

*Please Note colours will vary from those shown here to those printed on a commercial press

However, to guide people who own, operate or work on board a commercial vessel through the key requirements of the new National System, AMSA will be holding a series of community information days in capital cities and regional centres during October and November this year.

STNARUATSER NAGOL

Come along and talk to AMSA and local state and territory maritime officers about the changes. Copies of the latest compact guide to the National System plus accompanying fact sheets will also be available.

While expectations had been that the port would open in in the middle of next year, Premier Barnett now hopes the project will only be delayed for around three years.

Mitsubishi or new investors would step in to get the project up and running again because the region has large deposits of iron ore.

He also said locals can expect plenty more public art with works already planned for Karratha’s town centre and the Leisureplex recreation centre, which is currently under construction.

Researchers and traditional owners are set to use a $175,000 grant to explore archaeological sites on Barrow Island, which are being called time capsules by scientists. Cave sites on Barrow Island are thought to contain artefacts dating from 45,000 to 7,000 years ago when it was possible to walk by land to the island that is now more than 50 kilometres off the Pilbara coast. Such archaeological sites are extremely rare because rising sea levels 7,000 years ago flooded shorelines along the entire North West and cut Barrow Island off from the mainland. Professor Peter Veth from the University of Western Australia’s Centre for Rock Art Research and Management said the findings could help researchers write a new history for Australia’s North West. “We are very excited because we think it will provide a unique insight and ability to reconstruct environments and peoples and climate history for the whole North West of Australia,” Professor Veth said. “We see Barrow as a time capsule of people, animals and plants up to 7,000 years ago. The importance of the Barrow Island finds was noted by the Australian Research Council, which awarded the project its largest grant this year. The project also comes as the Pilbara’s cultural and environmental value is increasingly recognised with plans recently announced to create a national park on the Burrup Peninsula. Professor Veth said Barrow Island is already turning up fascinating finds. He said remains in cave and shelter sites on the north western end of the island contain very old animal remains and artefacts used by humans. These remains give a picture of which marine animals were present in the North West at the time and have even given surprising evidence of animals that researchers otherwise wouldn’t have expected to live in the area. Other finds include stone

artefacts, which local people could only have brought from inland among the Hammersly Ranges due to the coastal area around Barrow being made of soft limestone. Another exciting research prize on Barrow Island is the wealth of information it promises to reveal about climate change, Professor Veth said. Not only is there evidence of old mangrove swamps and tidal areas but caves on the island are also home to carbon-containing stalactites and stalagmites “In other words, carbonate columns that can be analysed for climate conditions, so we can get a climate history for that part of north western Australia,” Professor Veth said. “In fact, it might be one of the very major climate histories for northern Australia, which makes it incredibly unique. Barrow Island also has archaeological evidence of modern maritime history. While Aboriginal artefact sites dating to before 7,000 years are relatively undisturbed on the north of the island, sites on the island’s south contain remains of whaling and pearling settlements from the 1800s. “There is some really big sites we think date back to American whalers from the early 1800s and some that we know were left by Aboriginal people used in the pearling industry in the 1860s,” Professor Veth said. “[The Aboriginal people] were actually captured from the mainland and used as indentured labour to dive and work the pearling vessels. “In the off season, they were left behind on the island and effectively imprisoned there. “Then the pearling fleets would come back the following year and pick up whoever was alive and left. Professor Veth said there is even evidence that Kimberley people were being taken and used as pearl divers because Barrow Island contains spear points unique to the Kimberley area. “[Barrow Island] is certainly of incredible significance for the history and people of this region,” he said.

Karratha remembers Australia’s fallen soldiers By Ben Leahy

was observed.

A healthy turnout of Karratha residents commemorated Remembrance Day at the Shire of Roebourne offices last Sunday November 11.

Shire president Fiona White-Hartig said Remembrance Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, continues to be commemorated in Australia and countries, such as New Zealand, Canada and the United States.

Roebourne Shire Council president Fiona White-Hartig, Karratha and sub-districts RSL president Angus Armstrong and members of the Pilbara Regiment presided over a short ceremony to pay tribute to the fallen from armed conflicts around the globe. During the ceremony members of the community laid wreaths and a minutes silence

“After World War II, the day was renamed Remembrance Day to commemorate those who were killed in both world wars and today we commemorate all those who were killed or suffered in wars and conflicts,” Ms White-Hartig said.

Exmouth a step closer to cyclone-safe moorings The State Government-funded project will deliver 25 cyclone-rated pens, ranging from 15 to 25 metres in size. Transport Minister Troy Buswell said the new pen project will cater for the growing demand from commercial and recreational harbour users. “The pens will be offered for licence initially to people on the current waiting list and then to those who register an interest during the planning and construction phases,” Mr Buswell said. Mr Buswell said each pen would have a finger jetty extending to assist with loading,

“The pen system, to be built from high quality, low maintenance material, will extend from the car park adjacent to the Exmouth Fishing Club, parallel to the existing pen system,” he said. “Work on site is expected to start early next year, following the fabrication and transportation of the significantly bigger steel piles required for the creation of four permanent 25 metre pens.” Construction is expected to take 20 weeks and be undertaken by Wangara-based company Engineered Water Systems. Maccas kicks goals with Krakouer By Tamara Binamat Andrew Krakouer says playing for Collingwood is a very different game to making Big Macs at McDonalds Karratha for McHappy Day. Courtney McIntosh, McHappy Day Karratha event manager, said the team at McDonalds, along with Andrew Krakouer, are eagerly raising funds for Ronald McDonald House, a home-away-fromhome for families of sick children.

DRINKING WATER Save money using reverse osmosis to purify your own tap water and cut out the high costs of bottled water delivery!

The sale of every Big Mac on McHappy Day contributes $2 toward the fundraiser, and Courtney said they estimate 400-500 Big Macs were sold on McHappy Day at Karratha. The McDonalds Karratha team and their friends dressedup and decorated to the theme of pirates and princesses to encourage customers.

“It just puts a roof over [the families] heads so they don’t have to worry when their kids are sick,” said Courtney.

Claynton McIntosh, McDonalds Karratha owner, said the local store is usually in

the top ten fundraising stores every year, and most often second or third on the list. “The people here are really generous,” said Clayton. Andrew Krakouer said he is passionate about supporting McHappy Day, especially in Karratha where his youngest fans are abundant. Krakouer said serving Big Macs was easy, once he worked out the drink machine. “It’s going Andrew.

“First I started with the drinks, then got a promotion pretty quick and worked up to the registers. “It’s a nice environment here and everyone’s having a good time.” Andrew said he came to Karratha as he wanted to raise money for a cause he strongly believes in. “The Ronald McDonald Foundation is trying to create money to get these sick kids in the houses so they can be closer to their parents in the city.

“It’s a great cause so I’m more than willing and happy to put my hand up.” Does serving Big Macs compare to playing AFL? “Well the good thing is we don’t have a lot of meetings here at Maccas, it was a smooth introduction so it’s a bit different to the footy field,” said Andrew. “It’s a smooth run here and I don’t mind having a little runaround in Karratha.” Courtney said contributions from the community have been outstanding, with substantial donations from local businesses. “We’ve got pretty big donations from Karratha businesses; Karratha Earthmoving and Sand Supplies has donated $1,000, Ray White donated $300 and Air Dynamics donated $200,” she said. This year McDonalds Karratha raised $5,774 with $2.48 million raised nationwide. “A big thank you to Fiona [White-Hartig] from the Shire for helping to get Andrew Krakouer here for McHappy Day,” said Clayton.

Easing the Cash Flow Burden • Advertorial

Fifo Capital West Coast are specialists in various forms of business financing, in particular, accounts receivable financing. They have recently established a Fifo Capital West Coast office. Cash flow is a business’s biggest need, and when it fails to flow, the business can be put under financial pressure causing it to hold back on important payments or growth opportunities. To ease cash flow issues, there is a simple and time proven method to turn accounts receivables into ready cash. Invoice discounting and other forms of invoice factoring facilities are financing tools that can be used by a variety of businesses to give instant cash resources needed to maintain momentum. Let’s look at a quick example. A business generates an invoice to another creditworthy business. Under an invoice discounting scenario, an

invoice discounter pays the business an initial 90% of the invoice value immediately, in cash. Once the customer has fully paid the invoice, the business receives the remaining 10% payment, less the invoice discounter’s fees. The benefits from this type of service are many: enabling the business to make prompt payment to its suppliers; meeting its payroll and tax obligations, funding business growth and taking advantage of other business opportunities. The types of businesses that use invoice discounters are typically those in growth mode, or those requiring short term cash funds to meet creditor and staff payments. What makes invoice discounting is that there is no need for the business to hand over their entire customer base, but only those individual invoices they choose. And, there is no need to lock into long term agreements with the invoice

discounter. The business can choose when to use the service, and when to stop. Other important features are that the invoice discounter’s lending decision is largely based on the strength of the debtor or payer of the invoice, rather than the client business, and that the entire process can often be completed within 24 hours of the business contacting the invoice discounter. Invoice discounting has evolved greatly over the past decade and sits comfortably along side conventional financing. It should be made clear that invoice financiers are not in competition with conventional lenders. To find out more about how invoice discounting can assist your businesses cash flow, call Fifo Capital West Coast 08 9345 20 42 Mobile 0419 906 326 email al.rosano@fifocapital.com or visit www.fifocapital.com.

Public jetty closure The Port Hedland public jetty will be closed for up to 10 days from December 2 to allow the second stage of essential repairs. The improvement works are needed to ensure the continued safe use of the jetty by pedestrians and vehicles. The work is scheduled to commence on November 19 and finish on December 20. The repairs include the replacement of corroded structural members, floors, steps and handrails on the jetty approach way, jetty head and

floors. It also includes blasting and painting of the steel work. There will be total closure of the jetty from December 2 to 12 to enable the removal of the approach way grating and structural members. The jetty will remain open at all other times with an escort when applicable. This will be the last package of work that will interfere with jetty users. A final stage involving painting the jetty piles is expected to commence in March 2013.

Tom Price residents win WA firefighting award Tom Price’s Christopher and Maxine O’Connell have won the Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service of Western Australia Award at the 2012 Firefighting Awards held in Perth earlier this month. The couple, who are the captain and secretary of the Tom Price Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service, won the award after a tragic caravan fire in the region compelled them to create a unique fire safety program. They spent close to three years working with Indigenous and nonIndigenous people to produce an education package that includes books featuring artwork by local school children and puppets depicting native animals. The publication is being distributed

to volunteer fire brigades in the Pilbara. Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Wayne Gregson said that career and volunteer firefighters, like the O’Connells, responded to nearly 29,000 incidents during the last financial year and all their efforts were worthy of praise. “These brave men and women stand ready to protect the lives and property of all Western Australians and they are prepared to risk their own safety in the process,” he said. “We owe all of our firefighters a huge debt of gratitude for the important work they do in protecting WA communities and these awards are one way of drawing attention to their vital role and extending our thanks for a job well done.”

Pied Butcherbird

The Pied Butcherbird (Cracticus nigrogularis) is a medium-sized songbird native to Australia. It is also commonly known as a Blackthroated Butcherbird or colloquially as Jackeroo in the Musgrave Ranges in Central Australia.

State and local government officers will have the opportunity to discuss misconduct risks in their organisations and local residents will be able to make complaints about alleged public sector misconduct when a team of Corruption and Crime Commission officers visit Karratha and Port Hedland later this month.

It grows to about 35 centimetres in length and has black and white plumage. Butcherbirds are common in woodlands and in urban environments. Their diet consists mostly of small vertebrates and insects, while they have also been known to accept food from humans. Like other butcherbirds, the Pied Butcherbird is stockily built with a relatively large head and short wings and legs. The colouring of juvenile birds is brown and white, but as they mature black feathers replace the brown. Adult birds have a black head, nape and throat, giving them the appearance of wearing a black hood bounded by a broad white collar. The mantle and much of the tail and wings are black, while the rump, tail tip, outer wing feathers and underparts are white. The eyes are dark brown, the legs grey and the bill a pale bluish grey tipped with black, with a prominent hook at the end. The black hood helps distinguish the Pied Butcherbird from the Australian Magpie and much smaller Magpie-lark, the latter of which also has a much smaller beak. The Pied Butcherbird sings with a clearer and richer voice than the Australian magpie and is considered by some to be the most accomplished songbird in the country. One writer described it as a “magic flute”. Song melodies vary across the continent

with no single song being sung by the whole population. There is no clear demarcation between simple calls and elaborate songs, and duets are common. The species improvises extensively creating new and complex melodies.

in

The Pied Butcherbird is found across much of Australia, except the far south and Tasmania. It spends much of its time in open woodlands and scrublands and avoids the most arid environments. Located in the fork of a tree, it constructs the body of its nest using dry sticks and makes a cup-shaped interior with finer materials, such as dried grass, bark and leaves. The clutch consists of two to five (most commonly three or four) eggs blotched with brown over a base colour of various shades of pale grey and brownish-green. Oval in shape, the eggs take 21 days to incubate and the young spend another 30 days in the nest before fledging.

Commissioner Roger Macknay QC, who is leading the team, will address public sector, business and community leaders and take part in round-table meetings with local officials. Two corruption prevention officers will also conduct workshops for public officers in Newman The Commissioner said the rapid economic development in the Pilbara presents unique misconduct risks to State and local governments including employing and retaining staff

who are more attracted by the high salaries in the resources sector, dealing with conflicts of interest that inevitably arise in small communities, handling confidential information and working with mining companies to improve public facilities. “Integrity in government is important to ensure that decisions made by the State are fair and provide equality of opportunity,” Mr Macknay said. “This touches on every part of our lives from our schooling to employment in the public sector, protection by the Police, the right to have a dispute settled by a court, health and many more,” he said. Individuals can arrange an appointment with a Commission officer to discuss an allegation of misconduct by contacting Ms Ally Antoszewska at regionaloutreach@ccc.wa.gov. au or on 9215 4796.

They were hoping to catch a glimpse of the solar eclipse and be part of the frenzy that has gripped the northern states of Australia this past week. The car park at school was turned into an outdoor classroom for a short time as students, teachers and parents waited for the sun to come up and give them a view of the eclipse. Unfortunately cloud cover obscured much of the view but the students managed to see a very dull sunrise filtered through the cloud layer. The students also tried out the safety solar viewing glasses and were able to directly look at the sun moving through the sky.

Despite being disappointed at missing out on the eclipse they managed to catch the live feed from Cairns via internet on the big screen at school and were able to see the effects of the eclipse on the East Coast. The year 4 and 5 students were throwing words about like umbra (shadow cast by the moon blocking the sun), baileys beads (the rays of light from the sun shining through the valleys of the moon) and totality (the complete blocking of the sun by the moon). Being at school at 5:30am had its benefits, as students tucked into a huge breakfast buffet supplied by parents then played skittle soccer until the rest of the school arrived at 7:30am. All is not lost however, Australia is due for another eclipse in May 2013 so Tom Price Primary will have another go and work on planning a clearer morning!

for women into the spotlight and help breakdown gender barriers within the industry,” Ms McBride said. Ms McBride said it was vital for the long-term viability of the construction industry that it increases the number of women working in the sector.

Hayley McBride, the president of NAWIC WA, said the awards also help raise awareness of the opportunities that exist for women in construction.

With the awards open to any woman involved in the WA construction industry, Ms McBride encouraged members to nominate themselves or any women they knew.

If you have a bucket list as long as mine, there’s something I’ve noted worth noting: Be careful what you wish for as it may come true (and you might also feel hungry). Bah. I like chocolate too much to pursue this following wish more for more than one weekend!

A model bucket list I had a bucket list The thing, it fell apart Too weighted with the stuff I hadn’t couldn’t do…like art.

But yes I want an Oscar And no, it won’t come quick And yes I’d like to see New York To stand on a Sesame Street step.

I let it fall apart The texta black now fading And watching, whiffing every gift I’d never had parading

So packed away in my big box Of things I never did Was something I just laughed at ‘til I just undid the lid.

About my bucket list I packed it up and boxed it But maybe, could be, purposefully I might well have tossed it. I hid away with memories The dream of movie stardom (much like the gardening thing you know I did deserve no pardon)

Says, “Be a supermodel” (I’m 30 something, right) And then I won this competition Just for that – too right! So next weekend when I’m asleep Being manicured and preened, I just would like to say that it is Not as I had dreamed.

For once I had an agent And once I had a job Auditioning for Target ads In undies (what a knob).

For if I’d truly got my wish To be like that Ms Kerr I’d be so rich I’d shout you all My girlfriends, I concur.

And once I dreamt of being Interviewed by Andrew Dent But way before my dream came true His time on Two was spent.

And when the weekend’s over ‘n I come home hungry, beat, I’ll tick off supermodel from my list …and then go eat.

Pilbara school Karratha small businesses win State awards sings for change By Ben Leahy Yandeyarra Remote Community School has been announced as one of 13 finalists in the 2012 GenerationOne CREATivE CHANGE School Competition. Five high schools and eight primary schools were chosen to go through to national judging, which took place in Sydney last week. One primary school and one high school will be awarded $15,000. Students from preprimary to Year 6 at Yandeyarra Remote Community School worked together to create their CREATivE CHANGE competition entry. Rehearsing and filming their entry was just one way of encouraging their students to learn creatively. “We believe that every day counts, and every day is a good day

for learning something new,” explained their teacher Nicole Reade. “Our students are learning to be strong and independent young people, who can be both proud of their traditional culture and confident in their ability to operate in mainstream situations.” Australian artist Casey Donovan and actor Jack Thompson will join competition ambassador Jeremy Donovan and ASPA managing director Nicole Muir in judging the primary and secondary school winners. “The competition is about giving our youngest supporters a chance to be part of the generation for change,” Jeremy Donovan said. This year, 177 schools around the country entered the competition.

Pilbara businesses have collected a bagful of prizes at the 2012 GWN7 Western Australian Regional Small Business Awards held in Perth on November 9. Karratha’s sound production company Signature Music took out the Business Achiever Award, while contractors Real Employment for Aboriginal People claimed the Best Aboriginal Business. Grant Cucel from the Small Business Centre West Pilbara was also inducted into the Western Australian Regional Small Business Hall of Fame. Karratha District Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive officer John Lally said Pilbara residents should be proud of the businesses. “With some of the state’s best small business operators doing business right here in the Pilbara, why would you look elsewhere to source goods and services?” Mr Lally said. REFAP and traditional landowner Triscilla Holborow said the award was fantastic recognition for her team’s work in employing Aboriginal and women workers in the resources sector. “Not only are we an Aboriginal business that is kicking goals and competing but we also represent women in business,” Ms Holborow said of her company, which is female owned. “We provide [an example to] women that it can be done. REFAP also offers a compelling model of how locals can participate in the mining boom to ensure wealth remains in the region. As a local company, REFAP competes with international contractors to secure work from mining companies. It then uses an Aboriginal workforce of almost 20 full-time employees and up to 200 casual and temporary

workers to complete its contract work. This work can be anything from managing traffic and camp facilities to doing industrial wash-downs, which involve cleaning large mining equipment. And REFAP are not stopping there, according to Ms Holborow. They also have plans to compete for more technical contracts and to branch into industries outside the resource sector by building up the skills of their employees. “We have a few employees we are [soon] going to be offering accounting cadetships too and we are also looking at adopting a few more clients who can go into other professional services,” Ms Holborow said. Ms Holborow’s partner Kelly Grady said they also plan to roll out their business across the country. “Our goals over the next five years is that REFAP would be across Western Australia supporting Aboriginal people, and that by 10-years it will be a national business across Australia,” Ms Grady said. Ms Holborow said the fact that her business was interested in making a profit made it serious about its commitment to employing Aboriginal people. “When we say real employment for Aboriginal people, we mean it,” Ms Holborow said. “There is no misconception that this is a training program. “If training is required, we will give it to them on the job, but there is always a job at the end of it. But, perhaps, what is most unique about REFAP as a resources company is the flexibility they offer their employees. With many of their workers entering

• The team at REFAP the workforce for the first time or re-entering it after a layoff, full time work can often be a bit demanding at first. That means that while REFAP has contracts with 24-hours, seven-daysa-week rosters, it spreads that work out between a larger number of employees. Those who want to work full-time basis can, but many more also work part-time or on a casual basis. Ms Holborow said this especially gives more opportunities to women, by allowing single mums, for instance, to work part-time in the resources industry. With big mining companies regularly complaining at the high-cost of employing fly-in, fly-out workers on extended rosters, REFAP’s model might also shine a light on a possible alternative of employing locals on a flexible basis. For Ms Grady though, the greatest achievement of REFAP is helping to build a long-term future for Karratha and Roebourne. “The people here, especially in the town of Karratha – this is their home,” Ms Grady said. “If a mining boom ends, we are still going to be here, this is home, so we need to create those kinds of opportunities.

Western Australian’s future energy supply secured

The State Government will also legislate to facilitate the continued exploration for natural gas in the remote Canning Basin, the development of a gas pipeline to the Pilbara and ensure Western Australian

Last year, the US Energy Information Administration estimated the Canning Basin unconventional gas resources at about 229 trillion cubic feet, which is about one and a half times WA’s current identified

Mr Barnett said there was enormous potential for natural gas in the arid, 530,000sqkm Canning Basin, which stretched from the coast between Port Hedland and Broome, to the State’s eastern border.

offshore resources. “This agreement will help secure Western Australia’s energy supplies for the future,” the Premier said. “It ensures gas discoveries are rapidly brought into production, and that gas is delivered to the State’s domestic gas network, before any is exported.” Mr Barnett said natural gas provided about 50 per cent of the State’s domestic electricity generation, and contributed to the production of key resource

Roy Hill fly camp complete, construction continues Brookfield Multiplex Engineering and Infrastructure has completed the installation of a 200 man temporary camp at the Roy Hill mine, to allow workers to move on site and continue constructing the first tranche of 400 rooms and leisure amenities for mine workers. The temporary or ‘fly’ camp has been installed over the space of twelve weeks and now builders will begin transforming the site into a masterplanned community, with the first permanent buildings set to come out of the ground over the coming weeks. Brookfield Multiplex Engineering and Infrastructure WA Managing Director Rainer Rasmussen said it was exciting to see the fly camp completed so quickly and that the company’s unique managing contractor model had been crucial to this. “The past few months have been dedicated to enabling works to allow us to get on site and start building, so this is really the first major milestone for the construction team and it marks the official start of the accommodation village,” he said. “Our proven operating procedure is to control the critical path of the project by actively managing design, procurement and logistics as

well as site establishment and management. “We break down the work into well-defined scopes, utilising specialist subcontractors. “This is highly productive as our contractors know us, and know their work, so they can hit the ground running with no learning curve. “The value for the client is safe, fast and cost-effective delivery. “The first stage of development will include 400 rooms along with a temporary central facility featuring a gymnasium and sporting facilities, so that workers will have access to quality accommodation and amenities from the outset. “From early next year we will roll out the balance of the 1,600 rooms and a state-of-theart central facilities precinct, with the entire $190 million village slated for completion by late next year.” Mr Rasmussen said the accommodation village was of very high quality and would provide a framework for future projects of a similar scope in mining regions across Australia. He said the masterplan for the project had been carefully considered in conjunction with the client, Roy Hill, to deliver a range of benefits for both the project and its future workers.

“Roy Hill is about 100 kilometres from its nearest township, Newman, yet what we are building here is of the same calibre as you would expect to see in some suburban areas of Western Australia,” he said. “A key objective of the Roy Hill village masterplan is to make it as easy as possible for workers to get to and from work, and enjoy more leisure time by providing high quality accommodation and a range of recreational amenities.” Mr Rasmussen said creating a highly liveable mining village would have positive implications for the entire Roy Hill project. “We are delivering on Roy Hill’s vision to create a place that workers enjoy coming home to each day and that will attract and retain skilled staff. This is crucial considering the scope of this project, which has a 20 year lifespan,” he said. The village will ultimately boast almost 2,000 rooms, domestic facilities, shift change areas and administration centres. It will also comprise a host of sporting facilities in a central entertainment precinct including a gymnasium, auditorium, cricket pitch, a swimming pool, a beach volleyball court, barbecues and landscaped pocket parks.

targeted gas exploration in these permits and the development of a pipeline to transport gas south to existing industrial areas.

“Future development of energy-intensive magnetite production in the Pilbara and the Mid-West and other value-adding and advanced manufacturing opportunities in the State, will benefit considerably from an expansion of WA’s domestic gas supply sources,” he said.

The agreement also provides potential future gas supply for gas export once the Domestic Gas Project is under development. “If commercially viable gas resources are discovered, by mid-2016 the partners will be required to submit a plan for construction of the domestic gas project, including a pipeline connecting to the existing State gas network in the Pilbara,” Mr Barnett said.

“Natural gas is also an ideal partner for the State’s growing renewable energy production as a back-up in times of adverse weather conditions and peak demand.” The Premier said the agreement provided additional security of tenure for 17,000sqkm covered by five exploration permits held by the joint venture.

The Premier said that under the agreement, the partners were still required to obtain relevant State and Commonwealth environmental, safety, Indigenous heritage and Native Title approvals for their exploration, development and infrastructure proposals.

These permits anchor the joint venture’s Canning Basin Domestic Gas Project, with the agreement facilitating further

High school students paint a picture of domestic violence Did you know that one in three Australians aged between 12 and 20-years of age experiences physical or sexual violence from those close to them?

Violence Advocacy Victim Support Service said the winning entries will claim prizes up to $500 and be used in the official campaign for the 2013 Karratha White Ribbon Campaign.

That is one among a number of alarming messages highlighted in this week’s White Ribbon 2012 ‘Speak-Out’ High School Art and Photography Competition.

“The competition is aimed at engaging and creating dialogue with our younger community members on the issue,” Ms Ulani said.

In the competition, Pilbara students prepared posters and photographs answering the question: ‘What is domestic violence?’ The posters and photos will be displayed at Karratha’s Centro shopping centre from this Monday November 19 with the aim of helping to raise community awareness on domestic violence. • The High School Art Comp Poster

Monique Ulani from the Domestic

“With one in three women reported to experience domestic violence in their lifetime, it is important we seek early education, which will hopefully lead to early prevention and intervention.” “Domestic violence occurs across all cultural and socio-economic groups with devastating impacts on individual, family, community and societal levels. White Ribbon is an organisation that works to prevent male violence against women. The High School Art and Photography Competition will be one of many events taking place across Australia to raise awareness for White Ribbon Day and the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25.

Homeopathic medicine for injury and trauma By Sarah Penrose Through assisting the intelligent, coordinated way that our bodies respond to injury and trauma, homeopathic medicines can be helpful in the reduction of pain, swelling, bruising and prevention of infection. Homeopathic medicines not only aid healing but also help to prevent the long term residual effects of injury and trauma. Arnica, the primary homeopathic medicine for trauma of any kind, can be followed by other specific medicines. Bellis for repetitive strains, recurrent injuries, affinity with joint linings and bursa. Calendula for healing of wounds, to help prevent scarring, affinity with wounds, cuts and bleeding. Hypericum for injuries to nerves or nerve rich tissue, an affinity with nerves. Ledum for bruises or black eyes, for swollen, purple tissues and puncture wounds such as bites and stings. Rhus tox for injuries from over-lifting, overstraining, overexertion, an affinity with ligaments. Ruta for injuries to cartilage, great stiffness,

an affinity with cartilage, tendons. Staphysagria for cuts, surgery, dental work and injury and wounds from sharp, surgical instruments. Symphytum for injury to bone linings (periosteum), bone bruising, an affinity with bone. It is advisable to administer only one homeopathic medicine at a time. If more than one medicine is deemed useful, try one first for a few days followed by the other. Depending on the severity and nature of the injury, homeopathic medicines can be taken anywhere from hourly to once a day. The general rule is for severe injury frequent doses (hourly) and for moderate injuries one dose a few times daily. It is important to reduce the number of doses as improvement becomes evident. For long standing conditions, one daily dose for a week or so is best. Homeopathic medicines come in a range of strengths, called potencies. For home use or self-care it is imperative to be using only

6c, 12c or 30c potencies. Stronger or higher potencies have differing effects and are best given only by, or with the advice of, a registered homeopath. Homeopathic medicines are non-toxic, used world-wide, recognised as a legitimate system of healthcare by the World Health Organization (WHO) and evidenced by randomized controlled trials (RCT’s). Sarah Penrose is a Registered Homeopath with the Australian Register of Homeopaths (AROH), a member of the Australian Homeopathic Association (AHA) and the New Zealand Council of Homeopaths (NZCH). Sarah lives in Karratha and is always happy to discuss the benefits of Homeopathy.

Ovation Students Shine in Examinations Ovation Performance Company recently offered their students the opportunity to undertake internal examinations and presentation classes across classical ballet, jazz and tap. Taken over two full days at the Dampier Community Hall, students were buzzing with excitement and anticipation.

and students were full of nervous energy. Teachers Megan Wood-Hill and Leah Nagy were rapt that the results which reflected students’ hard work and preparation.

Students were able to present their skills to the CSTD qualified teacher, based in Perth, and received feedback across four key areas, including technique, co-ordination, musicality and performance. Each student was awarded a certificate to reflect their overall result as well as a participation pin and achievement medal. The examination and presentation class environment was very formal

“We believe examinations and presentation classes are an excellent opportunity for every individual to work towards a personal goal, at their own pace, and for them to have their efforts formally recognized. It also helps students and their parents gain a better understanding of their progress and the measures used to gauge dance performance qualities.”

“It’s very rewarding to see them rise to the challenge and put forward their personal best” said Megan.

• Regional Contemporary Choreographers Stretch their minds - photo courtesy of AusDance WA

Principal Teacher Invited by AusDance Ovation’s principal teacher Megan Wood-Hill was recently invited to attend a Regional Choreographers Lab and the MoveMe Dance Festival in Perth. MoveMe is a promotional body for Contemporary dance in Western Australia. The twelve attendees came from as far north as Broome and as far south as Margaret River. The four days intensive lab was conducted by world renowned contemporary choreographer, Felicity Bott in the King Street Art Centre studios above the AusDance WA division office. Each day was filled with dance workshops, choreographic experimentation and lectures. Every evening Megan joined the other

regional choreographers at various venues to absorb everything the MoveMe festival had to offer. Highlights included Harakiri and Faun at the Heath Ledger State Theatre, Tiny Little Tragedies and Life in Miniture. This final performance was performed to an intimate audience of only 5 at a time inside a caravan! It really stretched the imagination in terms of all that contemporary dance can be. Megan returned completely inspired and with a head full of ideas. The Pilbara work featuring at Ovations December 8th performance was certainly influenced by these amazing experiences!

Selling through the Christmas period

propertyguide.com.au Published by: Pilbara Echo Shop 2 / 18 Hedland Place Karratha WA 6714

Most property sales tend to take place during autumn, but for many people who are thinking of buying over Christmas and the summer holiday period, it can provide good opportunities to take time out and look around.

Many home buyers are keen to be ready for the New Year, often because of a new job, the start of the university calendar or settling the kids into a new school.

REIWA data show that sales slowed during the September quarter but early indications are that things picked up in the month of October.

Alan Richardson news@pilbaraecho.com.au

Successful sellers should allow extra time for settlement. Usually five weeks is enough between the contract of sale and the settlement date, but Christmas and New Year holidays may cause delays with building inspections and termite clearances, particularly if workers are on leave. As such, it’s wise to leave around seven weeks for the settlement period at this time of year.

the end of the year you can expect a strong slow down in the market during the festive season through until late January. Your real estate agent can advise you on the best marketing strategy during this period. In consultation with your agent, you may even decide to take your property off the market until February. Given current market conditions, it’s very important that a property is priced correctly to solicit genuine offers, facilitate a smooth sale and to get the job done in reasonable time. Knowing when and how to best market your property for sale is just part of the skill and experience that comes from hiring a professional agent. Source: REIWA

If you are thinking of selling your property it generally makes sense to get it on the market well before Christmas, but by the second half of December you can expect the market to go quiet until February when it tends to pick up again.

People are taking a while to look around and decide on a purchase with the number of selling days stretching out to around almost three months once a house is listed for sale.

The People you know and Trust

What is your best memory in the Pilbara? My best memory in the Pilbara would be camping on the islands with friends. Which famous person’s house would you like to sell? I would like to sell the owner of Facebook’s house because they are really rich and would have a pretty nice house. What is your favourite way of spending a Sunday? My favourite way to spend a Sunday is swimming at Hearson’s Cove. What is your motto in life? My motto in life is ‘you only live life once’. If the Queen would come to dinner, what would you cook for her? I would probably take her out for dinner because I can’t cook.

He’s a soul man … Heath has been touring regional WA and will be performing tonight, Saturday November 17 at Tambrey Tavern, Karratha before heading up to Broome. A self taught musician, former professional basketball player, automotive mechanic, electrician, navy cadet, small business owner, foster carer and all round nice guy, Heath has experienced a lot in life and he pours these experiences into his music. “Most of my music is based around blues and rock but with a bit of a twist because I play all the drums with my feet, play the guitar and sing at the same time,” said Heath. “And there’s a experience as well.”

RSL Members & Most Welcome

Giddy up gals, it’s Ladies’ Night! BINGO By Elise Batchelor Move over Pilbara princesses, it’s time to get feisty at Cooke Point Playgroup’s “Western” themed Ladies’ Night on November 24. So, saddle your horse and giddy up for a big night out at the Cooke Point Recreation Club. Last year’s event was such a huge success, with ladies all “blinged out” and dancing and wining and dining that this year, things are bound to be bigger than Ben Hur (or at

least Ben Cousins). Music, dancing, goody bags, auctions and prizes will all be part of this night where dad looks after the kids and mum gets her posse together to take the bull by the horns and go wild! Playgroup president Shelley Wallace really hopes all those gals who went along to last year’s princess themed event will do the same and introduce some more friends to the festivities. “Our 2011 night was a great success,” she said.

“This year, the proceeds will be going back to playgroup to upgrade our toys and outside equipment which is now aging. “We’d also like to purchase our visiting families new lounge suites as the old ones are tired and unsafe,” Mrs Wallace said. Mrs Wallace would be delighted to hear from local businesses who wish to have some public exposure by donating toward the various prizes and auctions for the evening.

Five tips for stress free Christmas events Five top tips to make everyone’s Christmas more enjoyable and less stressful

1 2 3

Plan: There are only five weeks until Christmas and if you plan on creating or hosting any sort of Christmas celebration, large or small, it will be a lot less stressful if you start planning now. Use a calendar: Record every event you know you need to attend and any other significant commitment or impacting factor until at least January such as family commitments, school break-up, work commitments, holiday and travel plans, arrival and departure of guests, parties, drinks and dinners. This way you won’t double book anything and disappoint people. Make lists: Make lists of guests who might be staying with you and ensure you have sleeping arrangements organised. Make gift lists now, because just making a list will trigger your mind to be on the lookout for suitable gifts on your travels. Make a food list, so you won’t forget to order the turkey or ham and you’ll know when you need to pick up the seafood.

4

One job at a time: As most people work full time, if you utilise lunch breaks by doing one job at a time, to either shop in person or order things online, things will get done and you will still be able to enjoy your weekends.

5

Tickets are $30, which includes a goody bag, free drink on arrival and nibbles. The event starts at 7pm on November 24 at Cooke Point Rec Club, Keesing St, Port Hedland.

DVD review

That’s my boy

Director: Sean Anders Starring: Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg

By Sean Smith, Karratha It seems as though Adam Sandler is losing his touch. That’s My Boy is a movie about a 13-year-old kid that has an inappropriate relation with his teacher, resulting in the teacher falling pregnant and ending up in jail and Donny (Adam Sandler) becoming an overnight teen sensation. He is an instant celebrity.

Former Karratha resident embraces challenge as Cuckoo’s Nest goes from page to stage Former Karratha resident Adam Salathiel is taking to the stage in a confronting, unsettling, thought-provoking and heart-wrenching drama this month. He’s appearing in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, adapted from the popular Ken Kesey novel for stage by Dale Wasserman, at Phoenix Theatre. Directed by Jane Sherwood, the play explores institutionalised mental health patients, invasive medical procedures and the delicate nature of the human psyche. Most famously, it was made into a multiple Academy Award-winning film with Jack Nicholson in 1975 – although the film was based on the novel, not the play. Challenging authority and ridiculing conformity, One Flew Over The

Cuckoo’s Nest follows a rebellious patient’s lifeor-death power struggle with a domineering head nurse. Salathiel plays Chief Bromden, a large American-Indian. “He’s someone forgotten by society, which is unsure of what to do with him so he is locked away from the world,” he said. “The chief considers himself a mistake, mentally beaten until eventually he believes he’s a failure. “It’s only after a friend’s death he realises he isn’t any of those things.” With an extensive background in the performing arts on and off the stage, Salathiel has performed with Kwinana, Roleystone, Stray Cats, 9 Lives, Mandurah Little and Phoenix Theatres and the Murray Music and Drama Club, also performing in

The Pirates of Penzance at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre. He appeared in Arena Arts and Entertainment’s Outside The Box, winner of numerous awards at the 2012 South West Drama Festival, and even scored a best supporting actor award many moons ago at the 1992 North West Drama Festival. One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest appealed to Salathiel for the challenging nature of his role as the chief. “When you look at it, I’m playing a not-crazy, large American-Indian in a mental institution where everyone thinks he is deaf and dumb,” he said. Director Jane Sherwood admits audiences will have high expectations. “We are not going to try to do an impersonation but are following a fairly traditional approach,” she said.

Donny’s illegitimate son, Todd, grows up and becomes very successful in his own right. He disowned Donny after his eighteenth birthday and ventured into life on his own. On the eve of his wedding day, Donny turns up and Todd’s (Andy Samburg) picture-perfect life and future has been thrown into disarray. I’m usually a fan of Adam Sandler, he makes me laugh and I like his taste in music, however, from beginning to end, this movie and subject matter made me somewhat uncomfortable. Sure I let out one or two gaffaws, but in general I sat there wanting to laugh, but couldn’t. Heavy-weight actors such as James Caan and Susan Sarandon play cameo roles, but even their hefty credibility doesn’t lend anything to this movie.

Vanilla Ice does a good job as Donny’s best friend and Willis from Different Strokes makes an appearance as well. The 14-year-old me would’ve laughed his head off at this movie because it feels like a teen flick. The 41-year-old me is slightly wiser and didn’t raise much of a laugh. I usually laugh easily. The subject matter is creepy and the storyline in real life has been played out before. Underage sexual relations are no laughing matter. One thing I really liked about this movie is the sound track. If you’re from my vintage and you’ve been known to throw on a KISS or Van Halen record back in your day, then get the movie for the sound track alone, because that’s the only thing that will really make this movie worthwhile. If you really want a laugh because this movie didn’t manage one for you, paint your face with KISS make-up, grab your tennis racket, go out onto the street and start singing I was Made For Loving You at the top of your voice. Your neighbours will yell, your dog will bark, your kids will hide, but most importantly it will make you smile.

There’s a new bean in town By Ben Leahy Karratha’s soul sisters and coffee lovers flocked to Soul Café for its opening in the Pelago West Building last Wednesday November 14. Serving all-day, healthy breakfasts, lunches, cakes and coffee between 7am and 4pm, the café had a busy opening day. Casey Pearce came along to enjoy lunch with her daughter Bella and friend Lindsie Price and said she loved the café’s funky vibe. “It is such a relaxing place to come to with your children,” Casey said.

“Five per cent of the rock lobster resource is allocated each year to recreational fishers and figures have proven that less than half of the allocation is exhausted each year,” he said. “Thanks to the input of the Recfishwest Rock Lobster Reference Group (which consists of passionate recreational fishers from around the State) we were able to negotiate a fair and sustainable set of guidelines on behalf of all West Australians.”

November sun burns down on the Pilbara Summer is well and truly here. The Pilbara’s pavements were on fire last week as temperatures soared to as high as 43.6 degrees in Karratha and 45.3 degrees in Roebourne. The temperatures were the hottest in both towns this year, while Karratha’s 43.6 degree day was the hottest November

day in five years. Elsewhere in the Pilbara, Paraburdoo hit 42 degrees, two days in a row. Talk about sweltering – and spare a thought for our region’s cricket players and other sportsman who will not only tackle the opposition but the scorching afternoon sun.

Club president Trevor pips life member Boomer in darts final The Karratha and Dampier Men’s Darts Association held a Money Competition at the Karratha Rec Club on Tuesday October 30. The club also then held its annual general meeting the following week on Tuesday November 13.

The Money Comp final was contested between club president Trevor Long and newly inducted Life Member David “Boomer” Hasthorpe. Despite a strong performance from Boomer, Trevor won the final, scooping the prize pool in three straight games.

• Cape to cape mountain bikers

Mountain bikers race in WA’s grueling Cape to Cape By Mark Smith Six Pilbara mountain bikers competed in a four-day stage race through Western Australia’s beautiful South West region late last month. The race took riders on an exciting adventure on roads, tracks and trails from Cape Leeuwin to Cape Naturaliste, passing through picturesque towns such as Augusta, Karridale, Margaret River and Dunsborough from October 25 to 28. Set against the stunning

backdrop of forests and vineyards, rocky outcrops and surf beaches, the riders pushed themselves to the limits over the 220-kilometre course. More than 1,000 riders competed in the race, which contained a who’s-who of elite national riders. Darryl Collins was the bestplaced local rider finishing 75th overall. Jason Attard and David Dew also raced hard and finished in 128th and 140th places respectively.

Mark Smith, Nick Muller and Wynand Jordaan were also satisfied with their race achievements. Luckily, all six riders avoided any major mechanical issues. Only David Dew took flight over the handlebars after the lead rider had a stick go through his spokes. Luckily Dew received only minor cuts and continued on. And it has not deterred him or the other riders from being keen to repeat the adventure next year.

• Newly inducted “Life Member”, David “Boomer” Hasthorpe, preparing for the final against Trevor Long.

Swimming a perfect sport for families Oscar Doherty might be swimming’s youngest and most passionate advocate but many would agree with his ruminations on the sport. At a recent swimming time trials and club night in Karratha, Oscar offered his recommendations for the sport. “I’m 7-years-old and before I came to Karratha, I lived in Adelaide and Perth,” Oscar said. “I love swimming here because the coaches are really good and always nice. “My coach, Sue Gray, can be a bit tough sometimes, but that just makes us work harder. “I also really like it in Karratha because it’s always sunny.

• Oscar shares his thoughts on swimming in Karratha

K 45

“Club night is always great fun

because we can play as well as swim and race. The food is awesome! “I had a great time at Broome and got heaps of PBs (personal best times) and I was trying to be really competitive. “I am going to Newman soon and I think I will win a medal and hope I get heaps of PBs. “I would like to win a gold medal because my Mum would be really, really proud because she was when Shaela [my sister] won a gold medal in Broome. “I’m not sure about the Olympics because that’s, like, years away. “I might become an electrician like my Dad.” Any families wishing to join the club can email karrathaswimclub@hotmail. com for further information.

Four-time Olympian Leisel Jones and a team of top Olympians and coaches will pass on their knowledge to children in the Pilbara this week. Jones along with athletes Matthew Cowdrey, Alice Mills, Thomas Whalan, Alicia McCormack and coaches Bernie Mulroy, Paul Oberman and Michael Shaw will visit the Pilbara as part of the BHP Billiton Aquatic Super Series Community Program. Gold medalist Liesel Jones said she always looks forward to passing on swimming tips to the next generation. “We all started our competitive swimming at a club and community level, and some of my fondest memories

of swimming are as a junior attending local club nights,” Jones said. “I can’t wait to meet some of the kids in the Pilbara and chat with them about what it means to represent Australia and hopefully pass on a few swimming tips as well. “Who knows we might find a future champion out here as well?” In Port Hedland, children will have the chance to interact with athletes with an hour of fun, skill development and community relays kicking off at 5:45pm on Tuesday November 20. The free clinic is offered to children between six and 13-years-old with a competency of Swim Level 5 and above. Kids will then get the chance to chat with athletes and take photos at a signing session open to the public on Thursday November 22, commencing at 4:30pm at the Newman

• Girls from the Pilbara AFL Women’s Program

Drawn match draws season to a close By Clint Degebrodt V Swans Regional Development Manager Swan Districts Football Club The Pilbara AFL Women’s program concluded last Sunday at Kevin Richards Memorial Oval with a high skilled and tight tussle that impressed the small crowd. The match started with the Blues kicking away to a four-goal lead with a two-goal first quarter backed up with a four goal second.
