Christmas holidays are approaching and if you have chosen to go away over this period then please read on and take some steps to keep burglars away from your home. We all know to lock our doors and windows when we leave our house but if you are going for a long period of time there are some other precautions you can take to keep your house safe. • Ensure all doors and windows are securely locked, preferably with deadlocks and keyed window locks. • Let your neighbours know you will be away and ask them to watch out for visitors and collect all your mail. • Cancel all deliveries such as newspapers. • Consider installing automatic timing devices for lights and electrical appliances such as radios and televisions. • Give your house keys to a trusted friend or neighbour rather than hiding them
Happy Birthday Daddy My Daddy has the strength of a mountain, Yet he has the purity of a water fountain. My Daddy has the wit of a clown, His jokes pull me up whenever I’m down. My Daddy has the looks of a Hollywood star, And his voice it sounds like the strings of a guitar. My Daddy is celebrating his birthday today, And I love him much more than I can ever say.

outside your home. • Be sure to notify the key holder when you return. This is especially important if you return home early. • Give your neighbour or friend your contact address and telephone number. • Consider asking your neighbour to park a car in your driveway. • Your answering machine message should simply say that you are unable to come to the phone. • Consider leaving a pair of old work boots by the front door to give the impression that someone is home. • Lock up garden tools and ladders that might be used to enter your home. • Turn down the ringing volume on your telephone. Go to www.nhw.wa.gov.au or visit Karratha Police Station and fill out a Going Away Form.

“Our priority is to give locals in Karratha the opportunity to... choose the lot they want from a large variety”
• Madigan Estate was released on Wednesday

Final LandCorp residential release at Karratha’s Madigan Estate LandCorp released by private treaty 60 new residential lots at its highly anticipated Madigan Estate in Karratha on Wednesday. Another round of 44 lots of Stage 1A will be released upon further demand. Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said the release by private treaty, rather than through a draw, was a clear indication the historical high demand for land in the town was steadily being addressed. “In recent years the State Government has released more than 1,000 residential lots in Karratha and in addition facilitated more than 1,000 dwellings through the private sector, which has gone a long way to help meet the enormous demand for land brought about by the resources industry boom,” Mr Grylls said. “Part of the Government’s Pilbara Cities vision for Karratha has been to ease this upward pressure on accommodation and rental prices and this plan is coming into fruition. The Minister said the State Government had worked very hard in the last four years to normalise the Karratha housing market. “Our priority is to give locals in Karratha the opportunity to
Jaws of life free teens from car wreck By Tamara Binamat An 18-year-old male and a 16-year-old female from Karratha have been airlifted to Perth with the Royal Flying Doctors Service after a car accident at the intersection of Hearsons Cove Road and Burrup Road at the Burrup Peninsula. The accident occurred about 3:20pm last Saturday December 8. Acting Senior Sergeant at Karratha police station Peter Clements said Fire and Emergency Services were required to use the Jaws of Life to extricate the teenagers from the vehicle.

The injured pair was travelling in a utility vehicle to Hearsons Cove when the car was involved in a collision with a truck. The driver of the truck was uninjured. Senior Sergeant Clements said it is unknown at this time how the accident occurred or what charges, if any, would be laid. Police are appealing to any witnesses who saw the Ford Falcon XR6 utility before the accident. Police describe the ute as bright orange in colour. If you saw the vehicle please call Karratha Police on 9143 7200.
walk into a real estate agent and choose the lot they want from a large variety,” Mr Grylls said. “An extra 104 lots on the market will help make this dream a reality.” With prices starting at $216,000 for 338sqm, Madigan Estate will provide a diverse range of lot sizes and quality housing types, which will also showcase climate responsive design. Stage 1A of Madigan Estate comprises 60 single residential lots in the first round and 44 lots in the second round in two grouped dwelling sites at 2,876sqm and 3,082sqm. Land will be made available to local residents and business owners with potential buyers required to have lived in or run a business in the Shire of Roebourne for the past 12 months. “These new dwellings will provide more affordable housing options and help establish Karratha as a world class City of the North with more than 50,000 permanent residents,” Mr Grylls said.

Shire of Ashburton Council suspended following audit controversy The West Australian Government announced on Wednesday the suspension of the Shire of Ashburton Council for six months, and the appointment a Commissioner. Local Government Minister John Castrilli ordered councillors to undertake governance training on the responsibilities and functions of a council. The Minister said the decision followed consideration of the shire’s response to a show cause notice, which highlighted a range of concerns, including issues identified in a probity audit undertaken by the Department of Local Government. The Probity and Compliance Audit Report identified sufficient evidence of a failure by the shire to properly perform some of its functions. It called into question the council’s ability to govern effectively without first receiving training in governance requirements. Mr Castrilli said the suspension was effective immediately and Mayor of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Mayor Ron Yuryevich had been appointed as commissioner to manage the operations and affairs of the local government. “The Ashburton council was invited to respond to concerns outlined in a notice sent to them that included issues identified in the Probity and Compliance Audit Report,” Mr Castrilli said.
“Having carefully considered the council’s comprehensive response, I have decided that it would be inappropriate for the council to act as the shire’s governing body at this time. “I have taken this action because I am satisfied that there is sufficient evidence of failures by the council to discharge its duty to ensure that the shire performs its functions properly. “These failures were of a level of seriousness and duration, as to warrant taking that step in the interests of the good governance of the shire.” The council suspension comes four weeks after Shire of Ashburton CEO Jeff Breen was stood down following the probity audit. Acting CEO Frank Ludovico said the business operations of the Shire of Ashburton would not run any differently. “The council has been replaced by a Commissioner who has all the powers and responsibilities of the Council, and instead of nine people, there is only one person,” said Mr Ludovico. “Council meetings will continue and Shire of Ashburton staff and contractors will still provide good local government services to the community.” “It is unfortunate that our local government has to go through this process, but it gives people opportunity to learn from the issues and we will become a better organisation because of that,” he said.

Wild weather treats Pilbara residents to spectacular light show By Tamara Binamat
long time between thunderstorms.
After weeks of boiling heat, Pilbara residents came out of their houses to enjoy the season’s first rains and an eye-catching lightning display. The sudden storm was a welcome relief to the humid, muggy build-up in the preceding days. Linda Paterson, meteorologist with the Bureau of Meteorology said the humid weather is not unusual this time of year. “With the onset of the monsoon across northern Australia during the summer months the northern half of the state becomes hot and humid instead of warm and dry,” she said. “However, it is more usual for thunderstorms to form and remain inland of the Pilbara coast, and it can often be the case that the coastal towns can go a
“On Sunday, it looks as if the surface trough was just offshore of the town during the day allowing the thunderstorm to form over the town or just offshore to the north and then track southeast over the town itself.” The strongest wind gust recorded at Karratha Airport was 67 kilometres per hour and the area saw 1.6 millimetres of rain. It is around this time of year the Pilbara expects to receive its annual rainfall. Nullagine received 83.4mm to 9am December 4 from a thunderstorm that caused some minor flooding of the Nullagine River. Ms Paterson said from now until Christmas the Pilbara can expect sunny, hot and humid conditions.
EAST PILBARA SHIRE UPDATE Welcome to the heart of the Pilbara
January 2013
President’s Message As another year draws to a close I look back with immense pride at what was the biggest and most significant year for the Shire of East Pilbara. Please let me walk you through some of our major achievements of 2012: • Iron Ore Parade, Newman’s first main street • Boomerang Oval Multipurpose Facility • Newman’s Junior Sporting Complex • Kiripirna Park in Newman • Stage Two of the Newman Town Centre Revitalisation Plan • Newman Airport - the current figure for passengers in a single month is comparable to the passenger numbers for an entire year back in 1996 Although these are just a few of the many achievements seen this year, I can’t help but reflect on how I have personally seen the Shire of East Pilbara progress over the past 12 years. When I first joined Council 12 years ago, we had a budget of $16 million which today has risen to $65 million- this is unprecedented growth for Local Governments in our country. I share this with you to emphasise the economic strength of the East Pilbara and to remind all residents how fortunate we are to live in such a prosperous and of course, beautiful region. I would like to offer my sincere thanks to Chief Executive Officer Allen Cooper for his leadership of the Shire and the diligent team who support him. I would also like to acknowledge my fellow councillors for their support and dedication to our wonderful East Pilbara. And may I wish you and your family a safe and happy Christmas and best wishes for 2013 – it’s going to be another fantastic year! Lynne Craigie: President Shire of East Pilbara

Plans for city centre submitted to Council The group will submit its masterplan for the city centre, known as The Quarter, which include plans to redevelop the existing swimming pool site on the corner of Sharpe Avenue and Warambie Road to accommodate a mix of new amenities and services. The Quarter development will include a 150-room four-star hotel, two commercial buildings with 8,500sqm of floor area, a four level car park, a retail promenade for boutique shops and cafes and residential accommodation. It will also feature an extensively landscaped town square with a large, open space for public performances, market stalls and exhibitions. Mirvac has been working closely with LandCorp on both the City Core development and the 2,000-home Mulataga residential community, with the development plan for Mulataga lodged a few weeks ago. Mirvac national general manager of resource partnerships Evan Campbell said he was pleased to have submitted both applications to Council and hopes development can begin in the New Year.
“The Quarter and the Mulataga community really go hand-in-hand – Karratha needs new commercial and retail provisions in town to attract more business, which in turn will spark increased demand for property – so both projects are vital to the future of the region,” he said. “The Quarter has been highly anticipated by locals who are looking forward to the lifestyle benefits of having a variety of new shops, restaurants and services at their doorstep, as well as businesses who are keen to expand their presence in the region. “We are confident that together, The Quarter and Mulataga community will rejuvenate Karratha by providing new places and spaces where people will want to live, work and play.” LandCorp chief executive officer Mr Ross Holt said The Quarter proposal was a big step in building a permanent population of 50,000 people or more in Karratha. “The proposal presents a level of amenity and services never before seen in the town in such concentration,” Mr Holt said. “It will help attract and retain a growing skilled workforce, which is crucial to meeting the goals of the state government’s Pilbara Cities initiative.”
Hospital emergency department upgraded Patient flow and staff productivity have been increased at Karratha’s Nickol Bay Hospital Emergency Department after a $714,592 upgrade. WA Heath Minister Kim Hames said the redesigned department, funded from the National Partnership Agreement on improving health services, was completed last month and visited by Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls. “The enhancements have increased the number of beds and will reduce waiting times and improve patient flow and staff efficiency,” Dr Hames said. “Walls were removed to improve visibility and create a central staff station, as well as providing an additional treatment cubicle and new resuscitation bay. “The works were staged so the ED could remain operating while
the work took place.” As part of a National Emergency Access Target, by 2015 it is expected that 90 per cent of patients presenting to a public hospital are to be admitted and transferred or discharged within four hours. The health minister said Nickol Bay Hospital had already achieved 94.3 per cent of patients being attended to inside the Four Hour Rule and the redesigned ED would further improve the performance. “The hospital’s November figure is well above the 2012 target for the Four Hour Rule and is significantly higher than the National Emergency Access Target to which Western Australia is aligned,” he said. “In fact the 94.3 per cent meets the target which has been set for 2015.”

Protection for 41,000-year-old Pilbara Aboriginal Site
• Archaeologist Bryn Coldrick with Nyiyaparli Traditional Owner David Stock - Photo courtesy of Fortescue Metals Group
Nyiyaparli Traditional Owners from the Pilbara on Tuesday announced the oldest occupation dates ever found in the region. Working with archaeologists from the heritage company Archaeaus, the Nyiyaparli Heritage Sub-Committee and Karlka Nyiyaparli Aboriginal Corporation have revealed that charcoals found while excavating a rock shelter are more than 41,000 years old, according to carbon-dating analysis. The occupation site is named after the nearby creek Kakuthungutanta in the Chichester Ranges to the north of the Fortescue Marsh on mining leases held by Fortescue Metals Group. Lead excavator Adam Dias said “The results are extremely exciting coming from an area of the Chichester Ranges known
to be rich in Aboriginal archaeological sites”. “Thousands of sites have been recorded to the north of the marsh which is thought to have been a focal point for Pilbara occupation.” Nyiyaparli elder and Heritage Sub-Committee member David Stock said he is proud this evidence of ancestors has been found. “We are happy it will be protected,” he said. “This kind of work shows Australians that our heritage is very important and that it can be protected.” Nyiyaparli elder and Heritage Sub-Committee member Gordon Yuline said it is important to keep the caves. “To show the young people how the old people used to live,” he added. “It is very important we
protect these places and we are able to go there and teach the young ones.” Archae-aus Managing Director Fiona Hook noted that the shelter site would be protected by a buffer zone and that Nyiyaparli Traditional Owners had requested further research be carried out at the important site. Fortescue’s Chief Executive Officer Nev Power confirmed the company’s commitment to preserve the important site. CEO of Yamatji Marlpa Aboriginal Corporation, Simon Hawkins said, “Archaeological findings such as this reinforce the importance of robust, participative cultural heritage management regimes in native title agreements to protect places of high significance”.
Alcohol-fuelled violence incidents drop throughout Pilbara By Tamara Binamat An effort to crack down on a spike in alcohol-fuelled violence around Karratha has resulted in reduced incidents of assault. Hundreds of additional police patrolled nightspots across Western Australia last weekend, December 7 to 9 targeting alcohol-related violence for Operation Unite. Operation Unite is an
opportunity for police to highlight the impact of excessive alcohol consumption and risky drinking behaviour that lead to violence and disorder. Of all the regions in Western Australia north of Perth, the Pilbara saw the least amount of charges during Operation Unite. A total of nine people were charged with 10 offences, compared to the Kimberley, which saw 34 people charged
with 35 offences and the Midwest/Gascoyne region, which saw 35 people charged with 38 offences. Acting Senior Sergeant at Karratha Police station Peter Clements said these statistics are a good result. “We’ve been doing a fair bit of work with the licensed premises and we’ve had our own ongoing operations so it’s been not so bad around these areas of late,” he said. Sergeant Clements said
...is just around the corner.

there has been a spike in incidents relating to assault in the Karratha area over the last 12 months and police targeted the issue heavily. “We had seen an increase in non-domestic related assaults [over the past 12 months] and some of them were attributed to licensed premises,” he said. “Throughout this year we had liquor licensing up from Perth, we’ve had our own operations targeting the areas to decrease the incidence of assault and disorderly behaviour. “The flow on affect from that is seeing a reduced number of incidents.” Operation Unite involved overt and covert licensing operations, random breath testing, mounted police, dog squad and additional police patrols. During the last operation in December 2011, 542 people were charged in WA alone.

• Year 10 students from Karratha SHS learn business skills
Future entrepreneurs take their first steps By Ben Leahy They haven’t quite reached the heights of Warren Buffett or Donald Trump. But nine Karratha Senior High School students might now be harbouring grand entrepreneurial dreams after winning a recent Small Business in Schools Competition held by not-forprofit microfinance company, Many Rivers. As part of the challenge, Many Rivers provided the all-girl team of Year 10 students $200 in seed money and asked them to come up with a business idea that they had to then execute, plan and budget for. And not only did the girls end up turning a handy $1,045 profit, but they also came up with one of the Pilbara’s catchiest business names – Red Rocks Foods. Student Shay Burgon said her Red Rocks Foods team decided to cater for Karratha Senior High School’s career’s and swimming carnival days by holding two sausage sizzles. She said the most important lesson the group learnt was how to work together. “It was really fun working with [my] friends,” Shay said. “But the most difficult thing was trying to get along with everyone and arguing all the time about what was going to happen.” “When we were ordering food, that was hard, because we were arguing
about the amount we needed and the profit we were going to make and how much of it we could spend.” Having overseen the girls’ business venture, Karratha Senior High teacher Peter Sharpe agreed with Shay. “The business aspect was really good and opened their eyes about what is actually possible,” Peter said. “But I think the main learning was about their interpersonal relations and being able to plan and come to a consensus, which was at times difficult, but they knuckled through it.” After forming in New South Wales in 2008 to support aspiring business owners and microenterprise development, the Many Rivers group now has 13 offices across the country. This was the first time they had held the business competition, and with two Pilbara schools successfully completing the challenge this year, Charles Nyemba from Many Rivers is hopeful he can roll it out across the whole State in 2013. Meanwhile, the Red Rocks Foods team from Karratha Senior High School have decided to donate their profits to the McGrath Foundation in support of cancer and the SIZZLING Parkinson’s Australia Foundation. SUMMER But that hasn’t DEAL! stopped teacher Peter Sharpe considering a change in profession. “If you could make that sort of money everyday you would soon be a millionaire,” he joked.

Prison officers unhappy with overcrowding in Roebourne prison By Ben Leahy

New Pilbara leaders celebrated Leadership Western Australia recently celebrated its first graduates from the Pilbara Leadership Program. The 15 graduates came from major mining groups, corporate organisations, not-for-profits and the State Government. Leadership WA chief executive officer Dr Sue van Leeuwen told audience members at a special cocktail graduation event in Karratha that these new leaders would significantly enhance community life in the Pilbara.
“Leadership Western Australia is entering an exciting time of growth, particularly as it takes its work into regional areas, and we are delighted to congratulate and celebrate this year’s Pilbara graduates,” Dr van Leeuwen said. “The aim of Leadership WA is to enhance its leadership programs and to improve the Western Australian community by fostering leadership that goes beyond professional life. “We are committed to the Pilbara and exploring leadership challenges and opportunities to build capacity in this unique region.”
with] the heat of the North West often means prisoners are less easy to manage and willing to comply, and that means prison officers have a much more difficult job.” “Sometimes it means increased physical risk and threat.” “There has been nearly 80 assaults [in WA prisons in 2012] – in the last three to four weeks, there have been assaults
Roebourne Regional Prison and others around the State are overflowing, according to the WA Prison Officers’ Union. An Australian Bureau of Statistics report released on December 6 showed Western Australia has the second highest imprisonment rates in the country. The ABS Prisoners in Australia, 2012 report found that WA’s imprisonment rate is 267 prisoners per 100,000 adults, while the rate for Australia as a whole is 168 prisoners per 100,000 adults. WA Prison Officers’ Union secretary John Welch said the problem also extends to the Roebourne Regional Prison, which currently houses 155 prisoners, despite being designed for 116. “Everyday prisons like Roebourne deal with high levels of overcrowding,” Mr Welch said. “That means prisoners are squeezed into cells that were never intended to hold that many people.” “[This overcrowding together
“prisoners are squeezed into cells that were never intended to hold that many people” on officers in Casuarina, Hakea, Greenough and Albany [prisons],” Mr Welch said. The ABS statistics show that Western Australia’s prison population grew 7 per cent between 2011 and 2012. Mr Welch said this growth is in contrast to other States. “While Queensland and NSW have seen their prisoner numbers fall over the past ten
years, WA’s prison population has increased by 37 per cent (from 195 to 267 prisoners per 100,000 adults),” he said. Mr Welch said the Prison Officers Union is calling for ways to improve the prison system, including new facilities to deal with the overcrowding, increased staffing levels and better pay and conditions. He added that he was disappointed that, despite the increased challenges prison officers faced, they had not received a pay rise commensurate with other public sector workers, such as those recently negotiated between the State Government and health workers. “We are asking the Government to come up with a CPI pay rise,” Mr Welch said. “I hope the Government recognises that prison officers are carrying a great burden for the State at the moment, and they need to look after them properly. “[These] ABS statistics show the real truth about the State’s prison system.” “It is a very serious problem … in every prison.”

Primary students play Santa for visiting sailors By Ben Leahy

Karratha Primary School students are digging into their own pocket change this Christmas to spread the festive cheer to visiting sailors. The students used their pocket money to buy 101 Christmas presents, which they then presented to the Dampier Seafarers Mission at a school assembly on December 7. Reverend Ian McGilvray from the Dampier Seafarers will now hand the gifts out to visiting sailors on each of the giant iron ore cargo ships that dock in Dampier port this Christmas. “We try to make Christmas special for the sailors because these fellows have been on their ships and away from their families for eleven months or even longer,” Reverend McGilvray said. “And as we saw
today, the Karratha Primary School has presented 101 boxes, which is enormous for a school of 300 children.” The Dampier Seafarers have been collecting Christmas presents from local primary schools for the past 10 years and supporting visiting sailors in Dampier since the early 1970s. But the not-forprofit organisation can trace its international origins much further back to 1835 and the work of Church of England Reverend, John Ashley. Reverend Ashley saw that sailors spent long periods isolated at sea and sought to give spiritual counselling to them. Since then, his mission has grown to a network of more than 300 Seafarers centres across the world, which can also provide physical assistance to sailors, such as food and shelter. That means that

Playgroup throws a merry St Paul’s rocks out Christmas bash By Ben Leahy

collaboration with the Shire of Roebourne.
The tiny tots and toddlers from the Karratha Community House’s playgroups were all smiles as they celebrated a very Australian Christmas party on December 7.
Kelly said the party was a chance for mums and kids from the different groups to come together and meet.
The Shire retains ownership of the building, but the Karratha Community House operate the playgroup rooms and are able to draw a profit from hiring them out for private functions, such as children’s parties.
Santa even dropped into the Baynton West centre in his sunglasses to hand out lollies, there was face painting and plenty of fun to be had outside digging in the sandpit and climbing over the play equipment. Kelly Dines from the Karratha Community House said the party was such a buzz that the centre will be sure to do it again next year. “The kids are having fun, the parents are enjoying it and
Now with 300 members, Kelly said the Karratha Community House has grown into the second largest community playgroup in Western Australia. They run 30 playgroups each week, including postnatal depression, special needs, Indigenous young mums and early literacy Bookworm programs. Having begun in 2004 at Pegs Creek Pavilion with just two playgroups, they now also have a purpose built centre in Baynton West, designed in
“We don’t get any funding for our playgroups, we rely on our membership fees,” Kelly said. “And the income [from hiring out the building] is keeping the cost of playgroups down for parents.”
Jesus Christ Superstar the musical move over as St Paul’s Primary School, Karratha, celebrated the start of the Christmas holidays with their end of year concert in early December.
Students used song to retell important stories from the life of Jesus, as they rapped and linedanced through tales like the parable of the good Pharisee and the crucifixion. It was Glee-meets-Sister Act.

Open your family up to a new friend this Christmas By Ben Leahy The Saving Animals From Euthanasia team took a brief timeout on December 7 to enjoy a discounted lunch provided by Karratha’s Ibis Styles restaurant. Safe founder Sue Hedley said her team had fun at the get together and thanked Karratha Ibis Styles for its support, after another busy year finding new homes for abandoned cats and dogs. However, with friendly kitties and pooches currently overrunning her house, Sue also wanted to remind Pilbara residents that there are plenty of animals looking for a new family this Christmas. She also said locals do not need to adopt an animal permanently to help out the organisation. They can help ease the pressure on volunteers by simply looking after a cat or dog for periods as short as one week or one month. Leftovers best left off the menu for pets this Christmas Pet owners looking to include their four legged friends in the Christmas cheer this festive season are being urged to exercise caution when sharing their leftovers. Specialist veterinarian from Queensland Dr Rod Straw said treating animals that have contracted diet related illnesses from consuming human foods has become an unfortunate Christmas tradition at animal hospitals. He said the community needed to be better educated about the serious risks of feeding leftovers to pets. “Diet related illness, such as pancreatitis, is one of the most common but also easily avoidable health problems that [vets] treat,” Dr Straw said. “Unfortunately many pet owners don’t understand that human foods pose problems for pets or think they are acceptable in small amounts. “There are some common foods that can have potentially fatal health effects on your pet.” To help pet owners avoid an emergency trip to the vet this Christmas, Dr Straw has put together a list of Christmas foods harmful to pets. • Macadamia nuts can be toxic to dogs. Symptoms will likely occur within 12 hours and can include vomiting, hyperthermia and elevated heart rate. • Chocolate may be toxic or lethal to dogs and other domestic animals, even in small quantities.
• Avocados contain a dangerous toxin, which can damage the heart, lungs and tissue of many different animals. • Onions and garlic can cause gastric irritation and anemia if they consume these vegetables in large quantities. • Grapes and raisins can cause severe acute kidney failure. • Turkey skin, pork crackling, sausages and other fatty meats can lead to pancreatitis due to the high fat content. If you suspect your pet has eaten something toxic contact a veterinarian immediately.

The Pilbara Underground Power Project (PUPP) is a partnership between the Government of Western Australia (through the Royalties for Regions Pilbara Cities program) and local Government Authorities, delivered by Horizon Power. The project aims to provide cyclone affected Northwest towns with a safe and more reliable power supply, replacing ageing overhead electricity infrastructure with underground networks.
During the Christmas and New Year period, works on the project will temporarily cease on 21 December and all open excavations on existing works will be backfilled. Work will resume on 7 January 2013. Residents that have any concerns about the sites during the cyclone season should know that Horizon Power adheres to very strict safety compliances and assures the community that all sites will continue to be safe. If you have any questions relating to the project during the Christmas period, please call Community Relations Manager Monika Page on 0428 979 293. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

THE
The results are in for the 2012 Pilbara Echo Christmas Lights Competition By Alan Richardson There were so many dazzling entries into our Christmas Lights Competition this year that our ten-member judging panel have been debating the winner all week long. But now, after studying lights displays across the Shire, I have the pleasure of revealing who gets to share in the $7,000 in prizes, provided courtesy of sponsors Rio Tino, Shire of Roebourne, Centro Karratha and Horizon Power. This year, the Bloomfield family from Tambrey were the big winners, scooping both the main prize and the People’s Choice Award, thanks in large part to their Gangnam Style display. Amanda Bloomfield said her family have entered the competition every year since it began in 2009, but this time there was more interest than ever in their Christmas decorations. “On the weekend, there was a queue going up the street,” she said. “Our neighbours have been incredibly forgiving with all the traffic up and down the street – luckily they get into the spirit of things too.” Their three children Ashlee (12), Austin (11) and Aleesha (8) helped put the display up and gave out lollies to passers by. A friendly passer-by even donated cash to the family to buy more lollies to give out. When asked what they liked most about being an entrant this year, Aleesha said she had the most fun making the snow. “I loved watching the people’s reactions,” Austin said. The family initially came up with a disco themed
display, but then struck on the idea of drawing Santa and his elves dancing to Korean pop star Psy’s hit tune, Gangnam Style. “I’d like thank my husband Lee for all the hard work he’s put into the display and to our friends who have donated items,” Amada said. “Also [thanks to] the Pilbara Echo, Rio Tinto and all the sponsors, plus everyone who voted [for us] and everyone who came to look at the display.” The outlying towns in the Shire of Roebourne also participated and placed well with major prizes going to homes in Dampier and Point Samson. Second place and $1,500 went to the family at Bruce Way in Point Samson, who brought together a group of neighbours to sing carols and play music. Check out their display, it is well worth a visit. Lockyer Crescent in Dampier also created a bright display to earn themselves $1,000 and, once again, third place in our competition. Barry Brown from Baynton West entered for the first time and came in fourth. The residents at Portland Way in Dampier were also new entrants and claimed fifth spot. Runner up in the People’s Choice category was 10 Armstrong Way, Baynton. A big congratulations to all entrants in the 2012 Pilbara Echo Christmas Lights Competition and thank you to the major sponsors Rio Tinto, the Shire of Roebourne, Centro Karratha and Horizon Power for providing the prize money. You can bet the challenge will be on again next year so start planning more creative displays to spread Christmas cheer to the community. Until then, happy holidays to all, and we wish you a bright and Merry Christmas and a safe New Year.

Bear hunt in progress - enter at own risk By Jenny Fox The Dampier Library staff recently welcomed more than 60 children and parents as they stalked a hidden bear for their end of year story time session and party. The theme for the day was “We’re going on a bear hunt” based on the book by Michael Rosen. An obstacle course was set up with swishy grass (shredded paper), sticky mud (bubble wrap), a dark forest comprising of gum tree branches and the cave (a cardboard tunnel leading under the table) that led to the bear. • The swishy grass
The story was followed by an activity where the kids assembled a bear biscuit that was baked for the occasion by Rachael Fox. The celebrations that followed had a dual purpose, as it was also a birthday party for one of the regular story time attendees, Brodie Lewis. Library staff decorated the library with his favourite AFL team colours and he had a cake to celebrate. Staff also put a sign on the front door advising: ‘Bear hunt in progress - Enter at own risk’. With many kids happy to take the risk and get involved in the bear hunt, everyone ended up having a good time and leaving with a smile on their face. Staff said they are already thinking ahead to next year and would like to organise a bigger event based on another popular story.

Stay tuned for that one.
Pegs Creek primary students shine Pegs Creek Primary School in Karratha held their highly anticipated end of year concert last Thursday night, with performances from pre-primary through to year seven students. Proud parent Nathaniel Ihanimo said the event was a successful display of the student’s talents and
acheivements. “I was so proud of the whole school, it was well put together and the students all performed brilliantly. There was a couple of glitches with the music but the kids along with their teachers pushed through and kept performing which was very pleasing to see.”

Help young Aussie battlers get an education this Christmas • Intermediate and Senior Tap - The Miners Arrive in Ovation’s Pilbara Endeavour Piece (real tradies grinding in the background Tap Dogs Style
Pilbara Endeavour spectacular success By Megan Wood-Hill Ovation Performance Company envisioned a Broadway and Pilbara inspired entertainment extravaganza for their first annual performance. “We have been simply overwhelmed by the positive response received from not just our parents and their families but audience members who experienced our Performance Company for the first time,” says Leah. Ovation’s Facebook page has been inundated with posts about the show. Words used to describe it have included breathtaking, intimate, emotional, amazing, professional and original. Ovation spent the first three terms of the year developing their students’ abilities, enabling them to choreograph and pull together their performance in just eight weeks. “We have worked extremely hard this year to ensure our students have the skills necessary to cope with the challenging choreography we
create.,” said Megan. “There are no words for the experience we have just had putting on our first show and seeing our students turn everything on, they weren’t just dancing, they were performing.” said Megan. As described by audience member Melissa Munro, “The show left us speechless”. Stacey Thomas emailed, “My husband and my two boys were completely spell bound”. “We were all blown away by the eye for detail that your dance company has and the professional way in which all the dancers performed. “What a fantastic way to spend the evening.” Ovation were able to raise $2,000 from bar sales supported by Karratha Tavern on the night, and together with a $5,000 Community Spirit Grant from Chevron, Ovation only needs to raise another $23,000 to install a professional sprung floor at the Catholic Parish Hall for use by the local dance community.
For most of us the Christmas season brings joy, but sadly for some kids, it can draw attention to what they lack – such as an education. To help these Aussie battlers, The Smith Family launched its Christmas Appeal this week with aims to raise $4.65 million by December 31. This will help provide 11,500 disadvantaged children and young people with the assistance they need to keep up at school and stay engaged in their education. Daphne Trevurza, Carol Warren and Jessica Townsend from the Karratha and South Hedland Smith Family said many Pilbara kids could improve their literacy skills. “We are still in need of new books for both boys and girls from 7 to 12-years-old for this Christmas,” Daphne said. “We have noticed from our S2S testing that some children in the Pilbara are reading behind their actual age so a nice new book for Christmas will allow them to practice their skills over the holidays.” More than 2,000 students recently participated in a writing competition held by The Smith Family with half
of the disadvantaged young people responding that they were most proud of their educational accomplishments. One young writer in the competition, 15-year-old Kirsten, has had a particularly tough childhood and writes that she is most proud of herself, because she takes care of her mum and still goes to school. “Before I go to school each morning, I have to shower, wash and dress my mum and make her breakfast because she is too sick to do it for herself,” Kirsten said. “Sometimes I am late for school but I try hard to make it on time. “I have a lot on my mind and I worry about my mum so it gets hard some days trying to focus on school work.” Research shows that supporting a child’s education is one of the most effective ways to break the cycle of disadvantage. The Smith Family strives to give disadvantaged Aussie children access to the same learning opportunities as every other child. In Australia today, there are
• Carol Warren, Daphne Trevurza and Jessica Townsend around 606,000 dependent children and young people living in jobless families. For these children, the effects of their family’s financial disadvantage go beyond the pressures of not having enough money for the basics in life. Their disadvantage holds them back from accessing the same educational and life opportunities as their peers. The Smith Family’s work touches the lives of over 106,000 disadvantaged children and their families in 97 communities across Australia each year. For more information or to donate to the Christmas Appeal call The Smith Family Karratha on 9144 1854.

The Naturalist’ Corner:
Don’t get hopping mad this Christmas season
By Jen Fox
• Jason Feuerstein and Chris Syme show off their shaved heads and moustaches
Local employees raise thousands for Movember Many Karratha-based Woodside employees took part in Movember last month, growing moustaches to raise funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and male mental health. Chris Syme and Jason Feuerstein were particularly successful in their fundraising efforts, collecting $4,398 and $6,149 respectively. Of approximately 140,000 men who took part in Movember in Australia in 2012, Chris finished
the month ranked 83 and Jason 40, in terms of total individual funds raised. Chris and Jason were joined by fellow Woodside employees Maas Hinz, Gautum Arora, Simon Bierwirth and Aaron Porteus at the Tambrey Tavern on Friday November 30 with all six shaving their heads to further boost the pair’s Movember fundraising efforts. A total of $7,000 was raised by Woodside employees at the Tambrey Tavern event alone.
Every festive season, I start hauling out my Christmas lights and paraphernalia and planning what I’m going to put up in the front yard. When I first started doing this a few years back, I used to go all out and have lights on the roof and all over the yard, including on free standing cut outs and statues. But after I had my first Christmas run-in with Dampier’s resident corella gang, I soon wised up. This notorious bunch are known for roosting in gum trees near the primary school and town hall and for foraging for food all around town. But on this particular summer morning a couple of years ago, they decided to pay my house a visit. At first, all I heard was a minor commotion on my roof at around 5:30am, but I didn’t give it much thought and went back to sleep. However, when I woke again later and came out to investigate, to my

horror, I found that it wasn’t Santa and his reindeers making the ruckus, but this lively collection of corellas frolicking around with the remnants of my Christmas lights in their beaks. They obviously thought I had put the lights there for their entertainment and were having a jolly good time. Not only were they tossing my layout around, but they were biting through the wires. Well let me tell you, I learnt my lesson and that was the last year I put lights up on the roof. If you’ve read my recent articles, you will also know that the local kangaroos treat my yard as a popular thoroughfare and walking track. So when I found some of my best displays mysteriously knocked over, I didn’t need to be a trained crime scene investigator to work out that the scuffmarks and left-behind poo were evidence these hopping vandals were to blame. A friend in Murchison
Crescent in Dampier, who used to do a fine Christmas display, also experienced the same woes. He was out in his front yard one evening when he saw the culprits in the act. Before he could stop them, a string of his candy cane lights were ripped out of position and dragged into the gully behind a set of large bounding legs. The lights were retrieved, but they were useless after that. These days, I plan my displays much more carefully, including taping all the light wires to the power cord and keeping the areas that wildlife pass through free of obstacles.
So far it is working and ensuring everything stays in its place. It’s almost like doing a Take Five safety check – but for wildlife instead of people. But don’t forget that it is more than just the kangaroos and corella gang that we have to worry about. Let’s hope we don’t get a cyclone before Christmas so all the kids in Pilbara can enjoy the spirit and magic that a beautiful Christmas light display can bring. Merry Christmas to all and thank you for the positive feedback I continue to receive for my Naturalist Corner stories. I have really enjoyed writing them.
• My night vision camera has captured my front yard wildlife activity
Having been asked to write a “Christmas in the car park” poem for the ABC’s final Mornings broadcast, I was faced with a challenging conundrum. That’s right, all you wise, ancient Mayans: What Christmas? So, if we get past the 21st and make it to the 25th, Merry post apocalypse everyone!
He’s on his 14th “Nodoze” She’s scoffing camembert He’s slouching in his special office ergonomic chair.
But Cristy, sucking soft French cheese And whilst the local bystander Might baulk at this scenario – And dripping chocolate soup Climbs from her clam shell tub, declares, Three ABC staff greeting pantless Santa (that Lothario) “A straw, please, for this goop!”
They’re lazing in the car park She burps cheese, does a hiccup And climbs out of her clam shell tub, Says, “who’s up now for cricket?”
And thus, a neat scenario, Of Christmas party fun. A taste of governmental money Wanton in the sun.
But Scotty’s still there slouching And grunts, “Talk to the hand” And puts his headphones on his head And cranks Lee Kernighan.
And speaking of insanity, That Santa soon rocks in. Upon the back of Brad the fisherman’s Quintrexy thing.
And Gemma, she’s not moving. Her towel soaks in her tan She’s lying without sunscreen on And dreaming of the man…
Well, THAT, shakes up proceedings. It’s Santa, bathers, boat. With two girls in bikinis. Good? Not on your ninny goat.
That man, of course, being Santa. She wonders why he’s late. She told him, “Get here for the party, Make it, like, a date.”
And ho ho ho! calls Cristy. And ho ho ho! says Gem. And ho ho yodelo-ay-hee-hoo Sings Scotty with a grin.
The truth of things is simple. A broadcast in the sun. A Santa come in civvies. And all just party fun.
For if you know the world is ending Come the 21st. Would you get decked in a hot red suit? Yeah…nah. As if. Perverse! And so they run the final program Just prior to Armageddon. And sunbake, yodel, bathe in Lindt, ‘cause all that’s left is heaven.

I have put together my top 10 tips for balancing the good with the bad so come 2013 you can hit the ground running with your new years resolutions.
1 If treating yourself to special things, buy small zip lock snack bags and seperate into individual portions. On the back of the pack you will find how many serves are in the product. Seperate into as many serves, and have the perfect sized nibble or snack ready at your fingertips with a limit, so you don’t overindulge. 2 When adding ingredients that contain fat (even good fat) to salad, chop, dice or grate them up into small pieces. Nuts, avocado and cheese are all great in a salad but big chunks can have you working against yourself even when you think you are doing well. Smaller pieces will spread the taste though every bite and you will need a lot less for the same taste.
fresh, colourful vegetables and instead of buying dips, use good quality, low fat Greek yoghurt, light ricotta cheese or extra light sour cream and blend with ingredients like sundried tomatoes, olives or char-grilled capsicum for amazing dips that your friends will all rave about.
5 Start your day with a protein smoothie. Use lots of fresh fruit, low sugar yoghurt, a scoop of vanilla protein powder and a little honey and you have a great, easy breakfast that provides you with a healthy, powerful start to the day. 6
Try portion control at mealtimes. Choose a small portion of protein, a smaller portion of carbohydrates and fill the rest of your plate with a delicious fresh salad or vegetables. You can always have more if you are hungry, but creating a stop point means you will digest your food better and may not overindulge.
8 Get moving and enjoy the fresh air. Lets face it most days you have a thousand things to do anyway this time of year. Taking half an hour out to clear your head and walk yourself around the block isn’t going to make your day any harder. With a little time to yourself to think and the blood pumping through your veins you’ll be surprised that expending energy can actually give you more energy and plus you will have done a good thing for yourself even if you eat a little bad later. 9 Buy activities for kids that get them active. Active kids are happy kids and at family gatherings there is no shortage of people to play with. If everyone has a portable games console then that’s what they will play with, if there is a cricket set or soccer ball you will soon find everyone outside enjoying themselves. 10
Don’t stress. You can eat well and train to perfection, but if you have stress in your life you
won’t reach your goals. I know that is easier said than done, but this time of year is for loving and laughing and letting people love you back. So let yourself sink into the arms of your family and friends, keep your goals in mind and just simply enjoy yourself. I am really looking forward to 2013 with Pilbara Echo; I have lots more to share with you. From my family to yours, I wish you a happy, safe and healthy Christmas and New Year.

Pilbara physio wins State award A physiotherapist, who only ever intended to stay in the Pilbara for six months and is still here after 33 years, has won one of Western Australia’s most prestigious health awards. Carol Simpkins, a senior physiotherapist with WA Country Health Service’s Pilbara Population Health team, received the Rotary Allied Health Professional of the Year Award 2012. “The variety of work here in the Pilbara keeps me inspired and learning every day,” Ms Simpkins said. Ms Simpkins won the award for her demonstration of the Rotary ideal of ‘service above self’ in her clinical work in both the Hedland Health Campus and outreach services to remote communities.
Ms Simpkins has played a critical role, since 2008, in establishing physiotherapy services for the people of Jigalong, Punmu, Parnngurr and Kunawarritji. She has led regular visits by teams of physiotherapists to these remote Western Desert communities, providing the residents with regular access to physio services. To further build the quality of services available to people of the Pilbara, Ms Simpkins also works closely with junior colleagues and physiotherapy students, sharing her knowledge and experience. “We have a great Allied Health team in Hedland,” Ms Simpkin said. “Much of our work is done as a multi-disciplinary team and not
as individual disciplines, which provides a high standard of care for patients. “One of the highlights has been being able to work with the Indigenous community both in town and in the communities. “Sometimes due to the distance we stay overnight in the communities, which allows us to build a rapport with the children and adults.” The Allied Health Professional of the Year Award is sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Mt Lawley and West Perth. In 2012, the categories included clinical psychology, nutrition and dietetics, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, podiatry, social work and speech pathology.

More WA medical students coming from rural backgrounds Students from Karratha and Newman were among those taking the Hippocratic oath earlier this month as more medical students from rural areas graduated from The University of Western Australia than ever before. There were 30 Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery graduates with rural backgrounds among the more than 180 medical students at the graduation ceremony and that number is set to rise again next year under UWA’s successful Rural Student Recruitment Program. The Head of the Rural Clinical School of WA, Winthrop professor Geoffrey Riley AM, said the increase in rural
graduates was good news for healthcare across country Western Australia. “It’s very pleasing to see increasing numbers of UWA rural medical students,” professor Riley said. “Each graduate has a unique story to tell about how they achieved their six-year goal.” The number of UWA medical graduates from country areas has grown from four per cent of the University’s overall intake in 2000 – when the Rural Student Recruitment Program was launched – to 25 per cent. Professor Riley said 43 more rural medical students from UWA would graduate next year.
Homeopathy
How low impact, safe medicines can still be effective By Sarah Prenrose Dip. Hom. Med. AROH. MAHA. NZCH. Registered Homeopath Homeopathic medicines are small doses of a substance prepared in a way that avoids unwanted side effects, which makes them especially safe for infants and to use during pregnancy.

These small doses are diluted – some to such an extent that not a single molecule of the original substance remains. But this can also give ammunition to some homeopathic detractors, who insist
that benefits gained from homeopathic medicines are more due to a placebo effect. However, support for diluted medicines gained wide media attention in The Memory of Water, 2010 work by Nobel prize-winning virologist, Luc Montagnier. Mr Montagnier studied how DNA produces structural changes in water, which persist at very high dilutions and that these dilutions still emit measurable electromagnetic signals. Because this information was seen as a reinforcement of homoeopathy from
a prestigious scientist, Montagnier’s pronouncements were widely decried.

Montagnier responded and said, “I cannot say that homeopathy is right in everything”.
“But even at 10 to the minus 18th, you can calculate that there is not a single molecule of DNA left.
“What I can say now is that the high dilutions are right.” “High dilutions of something are not nothing. “They are water structures, which mimic the original molecules. “We find that with DNA, we cannot work at the extremely high dilutions used in homeopathy; we cannot go further
“And yet we detect a signal.” Many other studies explore the matter of ultra-molecular dilutions (Benveniste, 1981; Brach et al, 2001; Sehon & Stanley, 2003; Samal & Geckler, 2001; Jonas et al, 2006; Vallance, 1998;) and provide a variety of modes of observation and investigation into the phenomena of biological activity at these high dilutions.

Does a swimming pool increase property value? As we enter the long hot Western Australian summer, many people will be attracted to the delights of a backyard swimming pool. They can certainly be enjoyable, but a question agents are often asked is whether a pool adds value to a home or not?

Well folks, in three words: It. Went. Off! From The Bad Influence to Hilltop Hoods, Port Hedland’s inaugural North West Festival on August 18 cranked out the biggest music party this region has ever seen and the punters were indeed impressed. A pumping crowd of 3,500 people filtered through festival gates from early Saturday afternoon, the first instalment setting up a slick tent city on the festival periphery. Hedland band The Bad Influence, who’d won their rightful spot on the bill less than 24 hours prior through the festival’s local band competition, kicked off with gusto. Within hours, festivalgoers at the Port Hedland Turf Club oval had also enjoyed San Cisco, Dead Letter Circus and Regurgitator before the three headlining acts settled in for the night. First up after dark on the towering stage were kings of funky groovin’, The Cat Empire. The Living End then drove the crowd wild, pulling out their three-piece brand of brilliance. Hilltop Hoods capped off the night, making sure that from the back of the crowd, right up to the nosebleed section, the Pilbara got to party. Sunset Events Managing Director and Promoter David Chitty described the North West Festival’s success as “superb”. “We are thrilled to have delivered a very successful festival by all accounts, particularly given the scale of the event in its first year in an operationally challenging remote location,” Mr Chitty said. And yes, the North West Fest, she’ll be back next year!

Local lad Neo is solo acoustic act Near Soul, who will be performing at Tambrey Tavern’s Sunday session this weekend. Neo likes to perform “progressive roots” but said he doesn’t restrict himself to one style of music. Near Soul has countless originals, but Neo likes to add cover songs to his set such as songs by Bob Marley, The Kooks, and Lily Allen. “I like to change the covers to suit our style more, I absolutely put my own spin on them,” said Neo. A music producer, songwriter and musician, Neo is passionate about writing and recording his music himself. Originally from South Africa, Neo studied audio production in Perth before moving to Karratha. The son of a respected African musician, Neo has been a pianist since he was a small child, and as he progressed musically, picked up the guitar, followed by bass, drums and the violin. Neo said his biggest musical achievement is having Karratha enjoy and want his performance.

Could Karratha’s Hayley become Australia’s next top model? By Ben Leahy Even adventurer Bear Grylls from TV show Man vs Wild might have fancied calling it a day and turning for home once lightning began streaking across the sky over the KarrathaTom Price Road. But not budding Karratha model Hayley Crispin and her support team of local girls. Such a dramatic afternoon sky only made the girls keener to get to Red Dog Gorge, about 50 minutes out of Karratha, and start clicking shots for 20-year old Hayley’s modelling portfolio. “Very excited”, Hayley texted from the car in front of us as thunder rumbled up ahead. It is a passion and fearlessness she will need to hold onto if she is to realise her dream of appearing on our TV sets as a contestant
in the 2013 series of TV show Australia’s Next Top Model. Hayley has taken advantage of concessions for girls living in remote areas to apply online for the modelling reality show, which – despite having a hiatus in 2012 – has been a ratings winner for pay TV channel Foxtel. The show combines glamour with real life drama, as prospective models live together while competing in photo shoots and other contests to be voted the winner by viewers. With each season’s top model often going on to secure a modelling contract with an elite agency, there is fierce competition. The 2008 winner Demelza Reveley was even part of a clique of girls, who called themselves The Bitchketeers and were caught on camera bullying another contestant. Yet clearly Hayley is getting good preparation for the rigours of the competition because living
and working in the Pilbara teaches you how to look after yourself. With no modelling agency in town, Hayley had to put the Red Dog Gorge shoot together herself, scouting out local photographer Megan Hartley and outfit consultant Daniella Antonucci. The girls then had to lug their gear across Red Dog’s rocky gorge where there were no tracks and plenty of red ants nipping at their feet. Next came the challenge of catwalking over mossy rocks in perilously high heels. “I would have never done anything like that before I got into modelling,” Hayley said. She said contrary to what many people think, modelling, including completing a 10-week course at the Perth Modelling Academy, had only built up her confidence. “I used to be very shy and timid – the one who was standing in the corner not talking to anyone,”

Hayley said. “What I like about modelling is the way it makes you feel about yourself, and the confidence [it gives you].” It has also kept Hayley focused on getting the most out of life after she moved to Karratha to be closer to her partner’s family. Back in Perth, Hayley had built up a modelling portfolio and started developing networks in the industry. Now she sees Australia’s Next Top Model as her last chance to make a big career out of modelling. If her online application is successful, she will get to skip the audition process for the show and be fast-tracked into the early rounds of the competition. If it isn’t, she said, she will still be happy to build her hairdressing career and do modelling as a parttime passion, including already

Education key to Indigenous regional business empowerment Leading West Australian Aboriginal MP Ben Wyatt has called for greater empowerment of Indigenous communities in self-determination and governance at this week’s national Indigenous Business, Enterprise and Corporations Conference. WA’s Shadow Treasurer and Shadow Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Native Title and Cost of Living said government policy had for too long been based on palliative economics – a defeatist attitude “premised on Aboriginal culture dying.” “No longer is it acceptable to view regional poverty from the social welfare perspective,” Mr Wyatt told more than 300 delegates from all over Australia at the conference, hosted by The University of Western Australia. “This is what Norwegian economist Professor Erik Reinert calls palliative economics, a phrase that is as unpalatable as is the inevitable end it portends.” Mr Wyatt said palliative economics must be replaced by building relationships between
Indigenous communities and industry. In his speech titled ‘Western Australian strategies to achieve Indigenous empowerment’, Mr Wyatt said regional empowerment was vital. “Aboriginal people cannot be empowered if they are not willing to prioritise the one key to empowerment – education,” My Wyatt said. “If we do not accept that a school in a regional or remote part of Western Australia must perform at mainstream standards, then what is the point of that school? “How are we providing Indigenous empowerment with such expectations? “We cannot deliver a standard of education lower than what we expect in Perth and then expect mainstream jobs to flow.
to develop 65,000 hectares of land for Australia’s biggest irrigation farming scheme in WA’s far north presented an important opportunity for Aboriginal communities to achieve empowerment. “We may well see a comprehensive settlement leading to empowerment,” he said. “The moral obligations of corporate social responsibility mean that Aboriginal people have been able to negotiate impressive outcomes with the corporate world. “Yet the benefits still remain unclear, the money trail often murky and the obvious benefits seem nothing more than those services that Government should otherwise already be providing.”
“We are, effectively, giving Governmental endorsement to a palliative education system.”
Mr Wyatt defended Native Title rights, saying, “Property rights, however weak, give Aboriginal people a bargaining position”.
Mr Wyatt said WA’s Ord Final Agreement between the State Government and Miriuwung Gajerrong Traditional Owners
“It is not for those miners who seek such access to Country to decide the moral virtue of their claims,” he said.

Christmas tips for small business The Small Business Development Corporation has developed a list of Christmas tips to help small business operators make the most of the 2012 Christmas season. The tips are tailored to suit small businesses across all industries, including retailers preparing for their busiest time of year, as well as businesses winding down over the Christmas period. SBDC chief executive officer David Eaton said the lead up to Christmas is an important time of year for small businesses and the SBDC’s business advisors will be working through the Christmas period (with the exception of public holidays) to provide advice and support to business owners.
The list of Tips for Small Businesses this Christmas Season is available on the SBDC website and includes retail tips to make your customers’ shopping experience enjoyable, tips to get your shop ready for the Christmas period, staffing suggestions to keep your team focused and for businesses closing over Christmas, tips for business maintenance, store security, and preparation for the new year. As the holiday season is also a time when many people consider starting their own business, SBDC’s free BizBasics workshops for business starters will recommence on January 8, 2013. To book, visit the SBDC website at smallbusiness.wa.gov. au/workshops.

Estuary Challenge Results reels in big results
CATCH of the year
By King Bay Gamefishing Club The King Bay Game Fishing Club hosted the M.Joyce Crane Hire Estuary Challenge 2012 last month at the Karratha Back Beach. There were 18 teams made up of 46 adults, 1 junior and 8 small fry. A huge 272 fish were measured and released, which included 97 barramundi, 37 queenfish, 33 salmon, 94 mangrove Jack and 11 tripletail. The King Bay Game Fishing Club would like to thank all its sponsors as well as the committee, who helped out over the weekend. For more information please visit www. kbgfc.com.au.
Steph’s blue bone’s a winner “Pretty to look at and extremely delicious,” Steph said. “I needed a hand to reel it in.” According to partner Dane Johnson, “She caught it on Tuesday June 12 at the end of the boat ramp”, as one does. “It’s a tusky if you’re a Queenslander,” he said. Mr Johnson, a keen fisherman himself, added that with Steph living in Port Hedland and with relatives residing in Karratha, she’s going to have plenty of impressed friends and family when they see this particular catch. “It’s my favourite fish to eat”, Steph said.”
First barramundi caught – Mitchell Owens at 6.18am. Longest mangrove Jack – Mitchell Owens 50cm. Longest Salmon – Nick Ivanovski 92cm. Longest queenfish – Vince Moroney 98cm. Longest barramundi – Mitchell Owens 105cm. Champion Barramundi Small Fry – Darcy Bryce, 170 points, and runner-up was Hudsen Bryce on 94 points.
• Proud Steph caught this bluebone at the end of the jetty
Ernest Hemmingway’s novel, The Old Man and the Sea, is possibly the most famous literary take on sitting around waiting for a darn fish. If you don’t count Moby Dick, that is. Then again, except for a couple of minority countries, none of us are actually into catching whales, so other big fish do quite nicely. Winter weather provides many opportunities for people to get out on local waters and fish and such was the case when Pilbara resident Steph reeled in this beautiful blue bone, while camping at Point Samson in June.

Champion Species Adult – Mitchell Owens, 1443 points, and runner-up was Brenton McDonnell on 1084 points. Champion Team – “In Memory”, Brenton McDonnell, Beau Cartlidge, Nick Ivanovski, 2295 points, and runner-up was “Team Dingo”, Mitchel Owens and Frazer Dean on 1787 points.

Karratha swimmers sweep the results at the Pilbara Championships
• Macie Bennetts, Grace Williamson (Female Club Captain) and Mikaela Rice Karratha Swimming Club’s senior swimmers were on form to help get Karratha across the line to win the Pilbara Championships, which were recently held in Newman. The junior swimmers were highly excited on the long bus journey to Newman and this buzz turned into a bag of medals at the championships.
But while the junior squads had some outstanding results, the senior and adult swimmers also held their own to help Karratha win the team’s event. Coach Sara McRobb said Karratha’s swimmers deserved the rewards as they had put in the hard work. “Results always come
from time spent in the pool and the swimmers have been putting in a great effort,” Sara said. “They are now seeing that reflected in the times they’re getting.” Macie Bennetts, in particular, had a superb meet. Not only did she achieve several personal best times, but she also medalled in every event she took part in to leave with a haul of seven gold and seven silver medals. Her dad and senior squad swimmer, Ryan Smith also came away with one gold in the 50m breaststroke as well as one silver and three bronze medals. “It’s a great feeling that the training is beginning to pay off,” Ryan said. “While I didn’t feel so good when I got back into the pool to start training, I’m beginning to feel that it’s all coming together
now and I’m feeling so much better – and fitter. “I had a goal in my head when I started to get under the 30 seconds for the 50m free, and I finally did that in Newman (29.98). “It has spurred me on to keep at it and keep improving my times.” Mikaela Rice, who is 16-years old, had a PB in all but one out of her eight races. This may be Mikaela’s final season as the heavy workload she will face when completing her year 12 studies could be too much to combine with swimming training. Nevertheless, everyone is hopeful she will swim at the Country Pennants competition in Wongan Hills in March. It’s a large annual tournament in which up to 30 towns compete. Coach and senior swimmer Erin Shaylor did not come away empty-
handed either with two gold, four silver and one bronze medal. She was just as pleased about knocking 10 seconds off her 400m freestyle race. Club Captain, 15-years old Cian Lynch came up against one of the stronger swimmers of the tournament from Broome, but was really pleased with his one gold and eight silver medals, which meant that he medalled in all but three of his events. Cian was delighted that he achieved a PB in every race and feels it is reward for the training he has been doing this season. 16-years-old Grace Williamson took home two gold medals for the 50m and 100m fly respectively. Coach Erin Shaylor said, “It was just brilliant to see so many of the younger swimmers doing as well as they did and to have that number of competitors at this level”.
“All the coaches and swimmers have really been striving to improve times and techniques this season and the results speak for themselves. “Having said that, the senior squad members, although fewer in number, definitely held up our end of the bargain. “It was great jumping into the pool for the relays too. “All the supporters get really vocal during these races, and it definitely adds another level of excitement to the event. “I would love to see more adults and parents give it a go and start training. “In Karratha in the summer, there’s no better place to be than in the pool.” For more information please contact Trish McQuade on 0423 662 847 or trishandjohn@westnet. com.au.

New blankets take the chill out of a Tom Price swim By Mabel Gough Rio Tinto sponsored blankets to maintain water temperature have arrived at Tom Price’s Vic Hayton Memorial Swimming Pool. The tough, tear resistant laminate blankets cover the length and width of the main and babies pools and will maintain the water temperature, which is well
known for being chilly, at a comfortable 26 degrees. Tom Price’s new pool manager Jon Tapper said the blankets are a welcome addition with many mums and toddlers commenting on the now perfect water temperature. “Not only do the blankets maintain the pool temperature, but they help to keep debris out of the pool in the evenings, making the pool
cleaner for patrons,” he said. Shire of Ashburton facilities manager, Mabel Gough, thanked Rio Tinto for sponsoring the blankets. “The temperature of the pool water was always a little too cold to enjoy a swim on a hot summers day, however, the pool blankets have stabilised the water temperature making a swim at the pool much more pleasant,” she said.

From Roebourne to Mount Everest By Ben Leahy
network and my family to a tiny Aboriginal community in Western Australia. That adventurous nature also meant that something “clicked” when she met a fellow Kiwi resident of Karratha earlier this year, who was planning on making the trip to Everest with three experienced climbers. “I knew that was what I wanted to do,” she said. She also decided it would be a great experience to share with the Roebourne kids she works with. As a therapist, Anna conducts therapy sessions with local children and their families and runs after school activities and well-being programs. But now she had the chance to share some of her own story with them. The first step was for the sporty snowboarder and junior national-level runner to “stand up in front of the kids and say ‘Ms Anna is quitting smoking today’”, she said. “They got to see me right from making the decision to go to quitting smoking to then having them come down and hang out with me in the [Saints Christian Motorcycle] gym. “They also ran up hills with me … and we even researched the trip together so it became something quite cool.” Anna also trained with her New Zealand friend, Gavin Hockenhull, learning how to handle mountaineering gear and ropes and walking with a weighted-pack for seven hours about two to three nights a week, before then heading into work without any sleep. Her determination and hard work paid off and once in Nepal, the group was feeling
You might think you have as much chance of coming to the Pilbara desert and taking up mountaineering as you do of winning the lottery. Yet that is exactly what New Zealand psychotherapist Anna Wood, who joined the Roebourne Youth Centre in April, has just done. The 25-year old, earlier this month, returned from an expedition to Mount Everest Camp 1 at an altitude of 6,100 metres. And, like many mountain adventurers before her, Anna said she learnt how empowering it is to climb at altitude but also how humbling, after a nasty bout of altitude sickness forced her to abandon the climb just short of her goal. “It was massively frustrating because I felt like I had the physical fitness to run up there,” Anna said. “The whole way, I was thinking, ‘I have a clever body, and I have the determination to get up there’.” “But then there was the throwing up and the headaches and the dizziness, which I couldn’t control. “You totally cannot prepare for it, some people get affected by altitude, some people don’t. “And that did my head in because you can’t change it.” It was a hard lesson to take for the Masters-qualified high-achiever, who is used to throwing herself headfirst into new challenges. “It is kind of in my nature to have big goals and ideas and then go and do them.” “[Like how] I decided I was going to move from New Zealand and my support

Roebourne residents leap into fitness boot camps Although they kicked off their workouts back in May, the Saints Christian Motorcycle Club officially launched their Boot Camp sessions at an open night at their Roebourne clubrooms last week. Guests were invited to look around the clubrooms and hear about the healthy mind and body programs. Mawarnkarra and PCYC are partners with Saints CMC in Roebourne and provide healthy programs that are included in the boot camp. While the Saints’ workouts began with just two people, the club has now grown so quickly, it has two teams. Tangiora Hinaki from Saints CMC said people from all age groups come to boot camp including boxing young children, teenagers pumping weights, adults and the
older generation. Willie Levi is the manager at the Yaandina Youth Centre and a qualified personal trainer. Having been a high-level rugby league and union player and learned fitness training from a former Brisbane Broncos conditioning coach, Willie specialises in short burst interval training similar to that done by a mixed-martial arts fighter. This can include anything from running up Mount Welcome to hitting an old tractor tyre with a sledgehammer. The Saints train on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5pm at Saints CMC clubrooms. All are welcome to come for a gold coin donation, but Willie will be away for a few weeks over Christmas.

so strong that they passed on an optional rest day on day six and decided to climb a nearby 6,000-plus metre mountain instead. The climb up thrilled Anna, but then the next morning the altitude sickness kicked in. “I kept telling myself ‘It was fine, I haven’t got altitude sickness, I am just tired or eating bad food’,” Anna said. Being stubbornly determined, Anna tried to conceal her vomiting from her climbing partners. Anna admitted it was not her smartest decision and by the time she reached Everest Base Camp – the launching point for the trip to Camp 1 – she was seriously sick and unable to continue. Yet despite being disappointed at not making it to Camp 1 with the other members of the party, Anna said her trip taught her something equally valuable. Not only did she set an inspiring example of what someone living in the Pilbara can achieve, but she learnt more about what young Indigenous kids go through when they come to her for help. “I’m in the helping profession and so I’m often the person that needs to be calm and collected … [the one that] people come up to and say I need help,” Anna said. “And [up on Everest] I was put into that position where I needed to stand up and say I need help, and it was bloody hard. “I have a new found appreciation for how hard it is to ask for help, and I’m so proud of all the people that come to us and say I need some support.”
