Truck driver charged over fatal crash By Tamara Binamat A man has died in a fatal traffic accident after the Hilux he was driving collided with a truck near Karratha. On Monday evening, a truck heading north on North West Coastal Highway near the Madigan road turn-off collided with a Toyota Hilux utility. After the two vehicles collided part of the Toyota Hilux became wedged under the truck. The 41–year-old male driver of the Hilux died at the scene. The man is a worker from Pannawonica and is believed to have been in Karratha for his time off. The 43–year-old Karratha truck driver was taken to Nickol Bay Hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Major Crash Investigators charged the driver of the truck with Dangerous Driving Occasioning Death and he is due to appear in the Karratha Magistrates Court on Tuesday January 22. Police are calling for witnesses who may have seen the utility or truck before the impact. If you can help, call Karratha Police on 9143 7200.

Murujuga National Park created on the Burrup By Ben Leahy The State Government last week partnered with local traditional owners to announce the creation of Western Australia’s 100th national park on the Burrup Peninsula. In a landmark agreement that will help ensure the preservation of the peninsula’s internationally renowned rock art, the new Murujuga National Park will be the first national park to be owned and jointly managed by traditional owners. The park will cover almost 5,000 hectares, after ownership of the Burrup Peninsula’s non-industrial land was officially transferred to the Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation at last week’s press conference. The Murujuga Park Council, made up of traditional owners and Department of Environment and Conservation board members, will now manage the park together with MAC and DEC rangers. Murujuga Park Council board member Joan Hicks said the landmark agreement was a long time in the making. “It is a very great day for us today and there is a lot of people past and present who have worked very hard for this to happen – a lot of our elders,” Ms Hicks said. The Burrup Peninsula is a sacred place for Indigenous people and has the highest concentration of rock art and engravings of any known site in the world. MAC chief executive officer Ron Critchley said the engravings contain the basis of Aboriginal lore that is observed by Indigenous people across much of Western and Central Australia. “The engravings are the traditional owners’ Bible of lore, which stretches from Kununurra in the north down past Carnarvon in the south and all the way east to Alice Springs,” Mr Critchley said. “No matter what groups [of Aboriginal people] are encountered throughout this territory, they all share the same lore. “[And] the lore emanates from the
Burrup. The transfer of ownership of land in the Burrup to MAC is part of an historic native title agreement reached in January 2003 with the Yindjibarndi, Yaburara, Mardudhunera and Wong-Goo-Tt-Oo traditional custodians. The land will now be freehold Aboriginal land that is leased back to the State and managed as a national park with formal protection under the Conservation and Land Management Act 1984. The park’s management plan was prepared by the Murujuga Park Council, which includes representation from MAC, DEC and the Department of Indigenous Affairs, and will guide park operations for the next 10 years. Mr Critchley said the Burrup Peninsula was so important to Aboriginal people that its management had united the local elders. “[Our] strengths are our circle of elders,” Mr Critchley said. “They have been split up over the years through native title … but when they come together and talk about this place, all those differences are forgotten. “That is the biggest strength of this place.”

Suspicious fire guts historic council building Symmetrical Group is a leading provider in Electrical, Construction, Mechanical and Labour Hire in the Pilbara.
By Tamara Binamat A fire devastatingly gutted the Shire of Asburton Council offices and town hall in Onslow on the evening of Sunday January 13. Karratha Detectives have charged two boys aged 10 and 11-years-old with two counts each of Aggravated Burglary, Stealing and Criminal Damage by Fire. The boys appeared in the Onslow Children’s Court on Thursday. Four juveniles who are below the criminal age of responsibility, have been dealt with in accordance with the Young Offenders Act. Shire of Ashburton acting chief executive officer Frank Ludovico said the fire started around 7pm and the damage is extensive. The fire completely destroyed the entire Shire Offices building as well as the adjoining Onslow Town Hall. Fire fighters and local emergency services volunteers worked together to put out the fire by midnight, however, it reignited around 3am before it was completely extinguished by 6am. The cause of the fire is currently unknown but Police are investigating the incident. The town hall has a wonderful history and held many memories for locals. Dawn McAullay is Onslow’s local historian and has many fond memories of the town hall but is worried a lot of the town’s historical memorabilia has been lost forever. The town hall and council offices contained history such as wartime memorabilia, paintings and a roll of honour that was displayed in the foyer. The hall also contained photographs of all the Shire of Ashburton’s past presidents. The building was originally built in 1912 in old Onslow and was called the Mechanics Institute. In 1926, the hall was relocated to its current location. In 1934, the hall was demolished after cyclone damage but the original floorboards were restored and used in the new building. “If those floorboards could talk they could tell many a story!” laughed Dawn.

• Damage to the Onslow town hall building Not only did the community love spending their weekends dancing, rollerblading or having birthday parties at the town hall, but famous musicians also spent their time there, said Dawn. Slim Dusty performed at the hall as well as Buddy Williams, Chad Hall, ballet troupes, the Salvation Army Band and many other accomplished performers. “When I came as a child I used to go play badminton in the hall,” said Dawn. “And we used to have dances there in the good old days before TV. There was lots of dances.” In 1968, the Council offices were added to the hall, which held a stunning painting of the jetty, acquired by the Shire to commemorate the centenary year in 1983. Dawn said the fire has destroyed a lot of fond memories too. Anzac parades were every year through the street, finishing at the town hall where the community would have the service. “That hall holds lots of memories,” said Dawn. “It was the hub of the town. “Before TV came to Onslow you had to go find your own fun and the hall was part of that because we had lots of dances and we used to even hold the pictures there. “For me, the saddest part is losing the hall itself and the beautiful floorboards. “It’s a huge loss for the town.”

Severe TC Narelle spares Pilbara coast By Tamara Binamat As Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle brushed around the North West coast, residents and businesses braced for the effect of a cyclone that reached a category 5 system. The Exmouth area received most of the brunt of Narelle, but local Department of Fire and Emergency Services volunteers received no calls for help. Joana Sestokas from Learmonth Meteorological Office said winds were strong with showers and thunderstorms passing over the town. Gusts reached 42 knots per hour on Sunday when TC Narelle grew from a category 4 system to a category 5. “It was quite unsettled and lots of showers came through,” said Sestokas. The Bureau of Meterology recorded 36 millimetres of rain in Exmouth. Sestokas said the weather was very humid with maximum temperatures reaching early to mid thirties, lower than average temperatures for this time of year. “A warning was put out on Sunday warning swell could reach 2 to 3 metres,” she said. “Sunday was a very, very windy day, there were really strong wind gusts
coming through.” Les Haytor from DFES was in Onslow during Tropical Cyclone Narelle’s wrath and said he was impressed at the Pilbara’s response to TC Narelle. “Winds were fairly gusty and there was rain but it wasn’t excessive,” he said. “But we’re ready for the big one if it does come.” DFES received only one call out for help during TC Narelle to a local business in Karratha to help with a shade sail. On Tuesday a weak low was located off the Kimberley coast, moving west south-west at 20 to 25 kilometres per hour. BoM has advised this low has very poor organisation and is in an unfavourable environment with strong winds aloft. It is not expected to reach tropical cyclone intensity. “Most of the winds are coming from the north east, so whilst that’s happening there’s some predictability with the next lot of systems,” said Haytor. “But we’re expecting the wind changes up there to come soon so the weather bureau will be watching the cells developing all across that north-west sector.”

Prison officers assaulted Councillor Lockwood takes at Roebourne prison By Ben Leahy State prison officers are continuing to call for improved conditions in prisons after a series of assaults on guards over the Christmas period. This included an attack on two officers at Roebourne Regional Prison by an inmate on Christmas Eve. One officer sprained his shoulder and the other hurt his knees in the incident and both are now awaiting test results to see if they have contracted a blood-borne virus after coming into contact with the inmate’s blood. In a separate incident at Perth’s Acacia Prison on Boxing Day, another prison officer was left unconscious after an inmate struck him repeatedly in the head. WA Prison Officers’ Union secretary John Welch said prison officers should be better looked after. “While most people have been home enjoying the festive [season] with their families these officers have been assaulted while helping protect the community,” Mr Welch said. The Prison Officers’ Union are seeking better pay and conditions, proper staffing levels at prisons and new prison facilities to deal with overcrowding. Their demands come after a December Australian Bureau of Statistics report, Prisoners in Australia, 2012, found that Western Australia’s prison population had grown by 7 per cent between 2011 and 2012. “While Queensland and NSW have seen their prisoner numbers fall over the past ten years, WA’s prison population has increased by 37 per cent, from 195 to 267 prisoners per 100,000 adults,” Mr Welch said. Mr Welch told the Pilbara
Echo that overcrowding was also affecting Roebourne Regional Prison, which was holding 155 prisoners late last year, despite being designed for 116. “[This overcrowding together with] the heat of the North West often means prisoners are less easy to manage and willing to comply, and that means prison officers have a much more difficult job,” Mr Welch said. But Corrective Services Minister Murray Cowper said the Prison Officers’ Union were exaggerating overcrowding issues by using outdated information, such as claiming that the State’s prisons could hold a total of 3,600 inmates. “[This] is an historic, irrelevant figure,” Minister Cowper said “It is a description of how many beds were available in the State’s prisons when they were first built, and does not take into account the construction of additional units and other renovations on each prison site.” Minister Cowper said the State Government had allocated $655 million to add more than 2,600 beds, including constructing three new prisons and four new work camps. “That is an unprecedented level of spending on our prison system, not seen before in the history of Western Australia,” Minister Cowper said. The Minister added that negotiations for a new enterprise bargaining agreement with the officers’ union had begun last month, as according to a timetable that had been agreed on in the previous agreement. “The State Government will continue to negotiate with the Union in good faith … and hopes to reach a fair and equitable agreement for prison officers at the earliest possible stage,” Minister Cowper said.
up position in Perth By Ben Leahy Former Shire president and councillor Nicole Lockwood has left Karratha to take up a director’s role with KPMG in Perth. Ms Lockwood resigned from the Shire of Roebourne Council last month after five years as a councillor, including two spent as Shire president. She now assumes the position of Associate Director – Government Advisory with audit, tax and advisory company KPMG. Ms Lockwood said she was most proud of her twoyear term as president, during which she led “a unified council to deliver the foundations of the City of the
North” plan to turn Karratha into a world-class city. She also said the Shire of Roebourne had become more tuned into community wishes over the five years she was a councillor. “The Shire is now responsive and proactive and driven by the community’s needs,” Ms Lockwood said. Shire or Roebourne chief executive officer Chris Adams praised councillor Lockwood’s contribution to the region. Shire of Roebourne councillors decided to leave Ms Lockwood’s position on the council vacant until the next election in October. “In this instance, Council decided that the cost of holding a by-election was too
• Nicole Lockwood much with only ten months until the regular election,” Mr Adams said. Ms Lockwood, meanwhile, said that the Pilbara’s beautiful “summer thunderstorms” are among the memorable things she will miss about living the North West.

Historic building officially closes ready Two cars roll as cows for a brand new start cause havoc on highway
By Tamara Binamat
The Roebourne community, as well and friends far and wide said goodbye to the historic Weeriana Hostel at an official closing ceremony last week. The building closure will make way for an exciting future for families in the area, as a $6 million children and family facility will be built on the site. Susan Shirtliff, CEO of Ngarliyarndu Bindirri Aboriginal Corporation coordinated the closing event and said the hostel will be demolished this month in preparation for the new facility to be up and running in early 2014. Susan said the closing ceremony was a fantastic event. “It was so full of love and joy and friendship. It was wonderful,” she said. “There is really a lot of quite loving nostalgia to the principles that were represented by the hostel,” she said. “Principles of nurturing, education, discipline, order and children.” About 200 people from all around Western Australia attended the ceremony and it was a “very fast, well attended exhibition,” said Susan. One of the guests of honour
was Pastor Stevens who shared the extremely rich history of the old facility. Pastor Stevens was at the old hostel since the very beginning when it started in 1964. He worked with all the children and raised his own alongside them. Pastor Stevens said the old Native Welfare Department wanted to create accommodation for primary school aged children, who were living on stations or remote areas and wanted to go to school in town. “The children would be brought in by their own parents and on school holidays they would come and pick them up,” he said. “We had our own children as well and we brought them all up together. “It was a very interesting day [at the closing ceremony] meeting not only the adults now who were children admitted to the hostel, but also some parents that used to bring their children in. “It was an exciting day. Life at the Weeriana Hostel was very historic and cultural, as Pastor Stevens described. “On a Saturday morning the
children would have chores, and generally when they finished those chores they would go to the reservation on the other side of town where a lot of the old families were,” he said. “That would help them keep in touch with their language and their culture and be able to mix with family. “On Sunday they had a Sunday school in the morning and in the afternoon they would go back to the reserve and spend the afternoon there again.” Pastor Stevens, who pastored the Pilbara Aboriginal Church until 2003, has kept in contact with some of the students. In fact, when he left the church in Roebourne he handed over to one the first boys who arrived at the hostel in 1964. Many of Pastor Steven’s old “children” have gone on to become prominent people in the local community, including CEO’s of Aboriginal Corporations, community leaders and company owners. “It was a very satisfying time and we were certainly very disappointed to leave at the time,” said Pastor Stevens. “There were difficult times, but on the whole our lives were very full.”

• Vehicle theft across the State has increased by 22 per cent this financial year
New police unit to tackle car theft Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan has announced the formation of a specialist unit to tackle a rise in motor vehicle theft across Western Australia. Commissioner O’Callaghan said 15 detectives and technical staff have been appointed to commence work immediately at the newly formed Vehicle Crime Unit. Vehicle theft across the State has increased by 22 per cent this financial year and in recent months there has been a rise of almost 70 per cent in this crime. A significant number of the stolen vehicles have not been recovered. “It is clear that more needs to be done

to stop the rise in motor vehicle theft,” Commissioner O’Callaghan said. “Having a dedicated investigation unit is part of the solution. “Given that in 35 per cent of all cases of vehicle theft, the offenders gained entry to an empty house through an unlocked door or window, the community also has a role to play.” The Vehicle Crime Unit will target offenders who use stolen vehicles to commit other crimes and those involved in organised vehicle theft and rebirthing rackets.

Pannawonica gets a Brand new town centre $200 million facelift for Tom Price Pannawonica residents are settling into their new accommodation following a community BBQ held late last year to celebrate the windup of the four-year, $200 million housing refurbishment project in the town. The Wandoo project included the refurbishment of 232 houses and eighteen commercial and community buildings, as well as the construction of 10 houses, 126 patios, town water tank, footpaths, toddler’s swimming pool,138 person camp and service station. Town beautification work was also undertaken with the construction of the new Yannarie Park skate park and multiuse sports courts and landscaping of central areas and gardens and resurfacing of roads. and Peter Ferguson have lived in town for three years and said the transformation was fantastic. “I really do appreciate what I have been given and the whole town refurbishment has put Pannawonica into a completely different light for me,” Mrs Ferguson said. “It is more of a family friendly place to live with all the additional parks now to take the kids to play.”
Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls attended the official event to celebrate the completion of Stage 1 of the town centre upgrade last month. The Shire of Ashburton delivered the project with $10 million of funding provided by the State Government’s Royalties for Regions initiative, through the Pilbara Cities Community Development. The new upgrade opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony and Minister Grylls said it was a perfect start for the renewal of the Tom Price community. “Western Australia is strong in economic sense and it allows us to do things like put extra money into a non-profit centre and to build stuff because of the work being done in Tom Price, which is driving the State and National Economy,” said Minister Grylls.
THE FRANGIPANI CABLE BEACH Within walking distance to one of the best beaches in the world, CABLE BEACH and an array of fine restaurants. The Frangipani Cable Beach Broome is a 4½ AAA Rated property built in contemporary Broome style which combines lush tropical gardens with an atmosphere of seclusion. Two designer swimming pools (Heated & Chilled) await you with this all single level property offering a variety of fully self-contained air-conditioned luxury accommodation comprising of 1, 2 & 3 bedroom apartments and villas with each featuring a garden courtyard with its own barbecue adjoining a verandah with its very own day bed, not to forget your very own private out door shower. All guests enjoy complimentary free WiFi and Undercover Parking.
“Without you it doesn’t work for us. It is only fair that the Tom Price community starts to look like you are the epicentre of State and National Economic Development and this is a really nice start and I congratulate you all for that.” Minister Grylls commented on the importance of natural shade and a town renewal.
“I am quite excited about the potential of a partnership between the Shire, the Government, Industry and Gumula,” said Minister Grylls. “You have one of the prettiest towns in Western Australia, the infrastructure didn’t keep up with the prettiness of your community or the economic drive delivered from the community. “Hopefully that will start to catch up and we hope we can keep Royalties for Regions going so that Stage 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are all possible.

“I would hope that as we build the CBD and the industry grows that more and more families decide that living in Tom Price has better options than dad flying to Tom Price to work and then flying home again.”

“This will make a massive difference to Tom Price and will encourage private owners to start to think about some renewal, whereas without this development they won’t.”
The ceremony ended with local kids running forward to help Minister Grylls cut the ribbon that officially opened Tom Price’s new town.

Despite shaky commodity prices in 2012, the Pilbara region’s population and economy continue to grow strongly, according to the latest data obtained by the Pilbara Development Commission. The development commission’s updated Economic Profile of the region also found that the number of jobs in the Pilbara had multiplied dramatically in the past five years. Kevin Walsh from the PDC said the Pilbara’s Gross Regional Product is estimated to have more than doubled since 2006. “The new information provided through the June 2012 ABS Gross State Product indicates the new estimated GRP to be $32.5 billion, maintaining its status as the major powerhouse of Australia,” Mr Walsh said. “Underlying this growth in the Pilbara regional economy is the number of jobs located in the Pilbara, which almost doubled in the last five years from 23,000 in 2006 to 45,000 in 2011.” The development commission’s updated profile comes as further good news for the region following a recent rebound in the price of iron ore, which had fallen dramatically in the second half of 2012.
The data drawn from recently released 2011 Census figures also showed that non-Pilbara residents undertake many jobs in the region. “Despite the increase in the number of jobs in the Pilbara, 40 per cent are undertaken by non-Pilbara residents, spreading the benefits of the resource developments to across WA and Australia.” In addition to its updated economic profile, the Pilbara Development Commission has also announced the appointment of a new chief executive officer. Ken King assumed the position on January 14 for a term of five years. Dr King was chief executive officer at the Gladstone Economic and Industry Development Board in Queensland from July 2003 to June 2012. Regional Development Minister Brendan Grylls said Mr King had worked in the public and private sectors in Australia and overseas and had experience in regional economic development. “The Pilbara Development Commission is now in a much strengthened position and Dr King and his team, I believe, will continue to plan and deliver a new sense of optimism in the Pilbara as a place to live, visit, work and invest.”

Wildlife watch: Crimson Chat
The Crimson Chat (Epthianura tricolor) is a species of small bird found in Australia. Crimson Chats are usually 1013 centimetres in length and 10-11 grams in weight. They have long thin legs, a pointy downward curving bill, and a brush-like tipped tongue. Adult males are covered in brown feathers, have red crowns and under parts, a black mask around their eyes and white throats. Females and younger Chats are coloured similarly, but with paler markings. Crimson Chats can be found in deserts, semi-arid climates, woodlands, grasslands, and coastal shrublands in the central part of Australia from the west coast to the Great Dividing Range and from the tropics to the south coast. Generally, they tend to inhabit the fringes of wet regions, where it is mostly dry and move to wetter areas when rainfall is insufficient. Crimson Chats eat insects and spiders that are on the ground or in shrubs, and they can use their brush-like tongue to extract nectar or take seeds from flowers close
to the ground. They have a long breeding season from August to November and a shorter period after the rain season from March to April. In this species, both sexes help build a nest in a cup shape, which is usually made with grass, rootlets, hair, feathers, and twigs. The female lays two to five pink and white, brown-red spotted eggs. Both parents help incubate the eggs for around two weeks and feed the young birds once they have hatched. If a predator comes near the nest either parent will fake an injury to try distract the creature. Predators include cats, snakes, foxes, and larger birds like ravens.
pilbaraecho www.pilbaraecho.com.au 11 echonews echonews New whip spider discovered in North West
By Ben Leahy If you have a phobia of spiders, look away now, because the State’s latest species of arachnid has recently been discovered after a Kimberley local spotted a whip spider along the Mitchell Plateau coast. But while whip spiders look ferocious, they actually are not spiders but a separate order of arachnids, which are not dangerous to humans. The Kimberley discovery is also the first time whip spiders, which have the scientific name Amblypygi, have been found in Western Australia. Requiring humid environments to survive, they had previously been thought to inhabit tropical areas of Australia, such as in the Northern Territory, Queensland and Christmas Island. Dr Bill Humphreys, senior curator in terrestrial zoology at the Western Australian Museum, said the newly discovered whip spider is a refugee from a time when rainforests covered areas of North West WA. “There is a whole suite of animals, especially in the Pilbara, one would typically associate with living on the floor of rainforests, which, in Western Australia, have now entirely moved underground,” Dr Humphreys said. “In fact, the subterranean biodiversity of Western Australia
is absolutely enormous because so many animals have been forced away from the surface.” While Western Australia still has remnants of rainforest, existing in the form of isolated monsoon vine thickets dotting the Kimberly, many creatures living in arid areas, like the Pilbara, moved into underground voids and water bodies. These include humid climate species of spiders and scorpions, insects, such as millipedes, sandhopper-type animals and shrimps and other crustaceans. Dr Humphreys said the Kimberley whip spider had been found in a sea cave by a tour boat operator, who recognised it was an unusual creature and arranged for specimens to be transported to
the Western Australian Museum. As an undescribed species, scientists will now study the whip spider, which is from the same genus as the Christmas Island whip spider. And Dr Humphreys said it is no surprise people can be a bit jittery upon first encountering a whip spider because he was as well. “They look scary,” Dr Humphreys said. “I was surprised when I first came across them in Papua New Guinea and they were the really large ones that were about 10 centimetres across. “They’ve got those very big prehensile mouthparts, which look fierce ... but they are actually not dangerous at all.”

Angel of Cuisine Welcome back for the year. I hope everyone had a happy and healthy break. I have lots of new ideas for 2013 and am excited about being home and ready to take on new challenges myself. I had a great break with my family in Perth this year, I ate lots of yummy food and came back completely inspired with new meals and recipes. loss resolution each year. Yet an average of only 77 per cent keep their commitment for one week, 55 per cent for one month, 40 per cent for six months and only 19 per cent for two years. “Simply put, the majority of New Year’s resolutions to lose weight are set to fail,” Dr McMillan said. “Old habits die hard and the fact is that fad diets and crash diets just don’t work.” “These new figures clearly show that good intentions are laid to waste once the New Year resolutions fail.” She said the challenge ahead for all Australians is to make healthy eating and exercise a part of our everyday lives, not something we do for two weeks every New Year. Dr McMillan recommends four top tips. Walk or cycle to work, or failing that park the car a little further away from the office than normal. Plan your daily menus ahead of time and shop accordingly. Choose an exercise you love and make the time. Eat smaller portions. “Aim for at least half an hour of activity every day,”
• Joanna McMillan Dr McMillan said. “Walking is ideal and if you can, add some more intense exercise every other day, [it can] lift your mood, boost your motivation and zest for life, and quite simply, make your body work better. “This, combined with regular and balanced meal portions can help maintain a good weight.” When it comes to losing weight and keeping it off, monitoring calories in versus calories out is a very effective way of keeping track. Dr McMillan recommends enlisting the help of a personal trainer or dipping into new technology, including the numerous smart phone apps on the market. “Choose something that works for you and you will reap the rewards,” she said.

Notorious Cuts By Ben Leahy Urban, hip-hop culture has hit Karratha’s hairdressing scene with the opening of new salon, Notorious Cuts, in Karratha Village late last month. A pimped-up version of the old school barbershop, Notorious Cuts is designed as a “man-cave”, where men can relax and spoil themselves. Guys can not only get stylish cuts and face shaves with a razor blade, but they can also get artworks cut into their hair. Barbers at Notorious are able to give children Spiderman and Transformer inspired haircuts, recreate designs brought in by customers or create their own freestyle designs on the fly. Notorious Cuts owner Mahir Hodzil said his team have even cut messages into
people’s hair. “In our Gold Coast shop, people have done the ride for cancer fundraiser and we cut that into their hair to help promote the cause,” Mahir said. Karratha’s Notorious Cuts, is Mahir and wife Lenore’s second salon following on from their popular Gold Coast outlet. With few barbers able to do hair art, Mahir and Lenore’s Gold Coast salon has attracted a string of celebrities, ranging from National Rugby League players to R‘n’B artists. But is opening in Karratha going to prove a hair-brained scheme? Mahir hopes not, saying they came to the Pilbara because Lenore has family in town and because local guys have few grooming options. “Local women can get massages and have their hair and nails done,” Mahir said. “We wanted to have a place
where the guys can also come in and walk out feeling fresh.” “Guys need some attention as well, the ladies shouldn’t get it all.” Notorious Cuts also sell urban street wear and baseball caps, stocking brands such as Lower, Starter, Crooks N Castles, Dope Couture and more. Mahir said the street wear and hair art gel well together. Yet surprisingly, it is not the attitude and style at Notorious Cuts that Mahir claims is the salon’s biggest attraction. Rather, he splits no hairs in claiming that the appeal lies in a more old fashioned quality found in every good barbershop. “Customer service is our number one priority,” Mahir said. “The reason our Gold Coast barbershop has done so well is that we love to have a good chat with every customer that comes into the shop.”
Chop to it this Australia Day Celebrating Australia Day with lamb on the barbie is ingrained in us as much as the sun, surf and a cold one. Whether you plan to get together with family and friends over a game of backyard cricket or round up the troops at the beach for a picnic sandy style, there’s no doubt that lamb is the tastiest accompaniment to your day no matter where you end up. Perfect for barbecuing served with fresh salads or on an Aussie lamb steak roll, you can give our country a nod with a traditional feast however you prefer to cook it.
Lamb Steak Sandwich Serves: 4 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 10 minutes Ingredients 4 lamb round or topside steaks 1 tbsp olive oil 1 red onion, thinly sliced 1 cup baby spinach leaves 8 slices Turkish bread, toasted 1/3 cup beetroot dip
K 24
Method Brush the steaks lightly with a little oil. Season each with salt and pepper. Preheat the barbecue flat-plate or char-grill pan to hot before adding the steaks.
“Serve Lamb on Australia Day, you know it makes sense”
Cook on one side until the first sign of moisture appears. Turn steaks once only. Test the steaks for degree of doneness with tongs. Rare is soft, medium feels springy and well done is very firm. Remove steaks from heat; loosely cover with foil and rest steaks for 5 minutes before serving. While the steaks are resting heat the oil in a frypan and add the onion. DJ Armee is a West Aussie through and through as well as a respected international DJ, so it’s no surprise he is spending Australia Day 2013 ripping it up in his home state.
Cossack
He recently moved back to WA after living in China for two years DJing
and working the club circuit. The last time DJ Armee was in the Pilbara was around five years ago when WAMI brought Downsyde to the North. Armee has been touring for 10 years and says performing live is second nature to him. “That’s been my fulltime career, performing live and promoting and making music,” he said. “I’ll be slamming out a party set with Aussie party songs, hip-hop, RnB and some new style dance. “Basically, just a big mash up of a party extravaganza set for Australia Day. “I’m looking forward to having a beer on the night and hanging out with some locals.” Downsyde are currently putting together their next record due for release mid-2013.

Dampier port access road upgraded Rio Tinto has completed the upgrade to its Parker Point port terminal access road in Dampier, including the construction of a new pedestrian walkway. Rio Tinto general manager of port operations Nick Serle said the community would appreciate the upgrade work. “These upgrades have improved the safety of what is a
popular circuit for cyclists, runners and walkers and is a welcome addition to the amenities of Dampier,” Mr Serle said. Parker Point Road is the main entrance to the Parker Point Terminal and is shared by Rio Tinto, Main Roads Western Australia and the Shire of Roebourne.

Tackle World Exmouth Fishing Report By Jenny Gates Usually the fishing before a cyclone can be good, but it tended to be quiet for some shore-based anglers this last week. Other anglers thought it was brilliant including Cass Micheli who caught six species in one day that included queenfish, flathead, shark, golden trevally, big eye trevally and cod. Cass was fishing from the shore and a boat in the one day and out-fished all other anglers including the family, extended family and myself. Well done Cass. The west side produced some good catches of Spanish mackerel for boat enthusiasts, while those out wide got into some huge yellowfin tuna with one weighing 76kg. There have been continued dolphin fish in the 50-60m depths west of the lighthouse and targeting these species on small pushers working the surface seems to be producing the numbers. Casting poppers along Bundegi towards the Navy pier resulted in ravenous big-eye trevally and small giant trevally for visiting anglers on the high tide.

• Cass Micheli with her golden trevally work this beach as well with rough weather for both anglers results of trevally, queenfish, and fish. cod, salmon and the odd trout. Squid have been showing up Mangrove jacks can be seen and caught around the Bundegi boat ramp, but they are cunning. The marina has had a variety of species in the canals and near the entrance lately. Small schools of bait fish can be seen in this area and predatory species such as queenfish, trevally and cod are usually close by for a feed. Small outfits with small lures work well here and this can be a great area to get out of
both off Tantabiddi and in the gulf. However, with the mudded from the cyclone it may take a short while for them to reappear. The cyclone brought huge swell and has changed some of the beaches along the west side and in the gulf. The largest tides of the month were on the day cyclone Narelle was due to pass closest, so we are very lucky the cyclone went west.

Tenants sought for new Leisureplex The Shire of Roebourne is calling for submissions from organisations interested in renting space inside Karratha’s new under construction recreation centre, known as the Leisureplex. Submissions are open to not-for-profit and commercial organisations keen to encourage participation, sport development, social interaction and community engagement. Roebourne Shire Council president Fiona White-Hartig said it was a rare opportunity to secure space inside such a modern and well-equipped facility. “As well as benefitting the sport and recreation community, the new facility will provide much-needed office space that is hard to come by in this town,” councillor WhiteHartig said. “Soon it will be home to a number of local organisations that will enhance the operation of the Leisureplex. The successful applicants will occupy the space for two years, with an option to extend the contract for a further two years. The Leisureplex project is expected to reach practical completion in March 2013, with a further three to four months to complete the fit-out. Shire of Roebourne CEO Chris Adams said they planned to have
all tenancy spaces filled and operational by the time the facility opens. “Shire officers will be working closely with the successful applicants to ensure they are able to meet the timeframes of the contract,” Mr Adams said. “It is important that we have as much of the facility as possible ready and operational when we open the doors mid next year.” Set to become the Pilbara’s premier sport and recreation precinct the Karratha Leisureplex will boast state-of-the-art facilities. It is also one of six strategic community well-being projects helping to improve public amenity and lifestyle options for all local residents as part of the Karratha: City of the North plan. Other projects include the recently-completed Cattrall Park redevelopment, Bulgarra Sporting Precinct upgrade projects, The Youth Shed, Pam Buchanan Family Centre and Frank Butler Community Centre. The Karratha Leisureplex is funded by the Australian Government’s Regional Development Australia Fund, the State Government’s Royalties for Regions Pilbara Cities Program, the Department of Education, LandCorp, Finbar Group Limited and the Shire of Roebourne.

Stay injury free during your New Year get fit resolution Safety precautions should not be forgotten as part of any New Year get fit resolutions to help avoid injury and keep active, Sports Medicine Australia has advised. During January, many enthusiasts start new exercise regimes to get fit and lose weight gained over the festive season. However, without taking suitable safety precautions before starting activities, injuries can occur and thus postpone any fitness benefits. Each year, one in 17 Australians is sidelined as result of a sports injury, making injuries one of the major barriers to participation. Sports Medicine Australia spokesperson, Dr David Bolzonello, said this need not be the case, as up to half of all sporting injuries are able to be prevented.

“[But] the risk of injuries
should not deter people’s enthusiasm and motivation to get fit and healthy. “All they need to remember is to undertake some simple measures before, during and after physical activity. “This preparation should reduce the likelihood of getting injured and increase the chances of a happily fulfilled New Year resolution,” Dr Bolzonello said. Sports Medicine Australia recommends following these measures to stay injury free. Avoid doing too much, too soon by starting at a pace you’re comfortable with and gradually increase your workload. Always warm up and cool down when undertaking activity. Warming up prepares you both mentally and physically for performance and decreases your risk of being injured. To warm up, simply start your chosen activity at a slower pace. Also remember to cool down after activity sessions to help reduce muscle soreness and stiffness. Take care when exercising in hot conditions, which are
common in January. During activity, try to rest in the shade whenever possible and protect yourself by wearing light clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. Always drink water or a sports drink before, during and after activity. Drink at least 500 millilitres an hour before exercise, 150 millilitres every 15 minutes during exercise and enough to fully rehydrate after exercise. Wear protective equipment such as helmets, padding and mouthguards where required. Good quality footwear are also a must as a number of studies have found a relationship between the type of footwear worn and the incidence of injuries to the lower limbs. Know what to do if an injury occurs, especially if you have suffered an injury in the last 12 months. Injury statistics have found previous injury increases the risk of further injury by 57 per cent. Use RICER – Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation and Referral. “People should also remember that if they’re ever in doubt they should consult their health professional for advice,” Dr Bolzonello said.

Ensure your pool is clean and safe this summer With the Pilbara baking under a scorching heat wave, local pool care experts are reminding pool owners to monitor their pool’s health as temperatures rise. PoolWerx owner Ernst Petersen said extra sun exposure, temperature spikes and increased use could damage a healthy pool water balance. “Most people don’t realise how much attention pools require during the warmer months, particularly when more people are using them,” he said. “Prolonged exposure to UV rays burns chlorine that is required to kill bacteria, and warmer temperatures, especially the extreme heat we are experiencing now promote algae growth.
“Increased bather load also adds contaminants like sweat, body oils and sun screen wash-off in pool water that affects pH levels and encourages bacteria. “Ignorance about the effects can result in nasty bacteria growing that cause swimmer health issues such as throat, eye and ear irritations and infections, as well as diarrhea, E. coli or giardia.” Mr Petersen said water quality could change as quickly as overnight during summer. “Just because your pool looks clean, doesn’t mean it is clean and safe,” he said. “Treatment can sometimes be
required up to three times per week, so it’s important to check your pool is healthy for use every day when you’re using it frequently.” Mr Peterson has offered five tips for summer swimming-season pool maintenance to ensure your pool is safe and healthy for use: 1. Check pool equipment regularly to ensure it is running properly. 2. Ensure the pH level is within healthy levels. 3. Ensure chlorine levels are adequate to disinfect microorganisms. 4. Vacuum and skim the pool regularly. 5. Organise a professional check-up or take a sample of your pool water down to your local pool care store.

He is passionate about marine life in the Pilbara and says underwater life in our region competes with oceans around the globe. A regular on photography dive trips, Marco took these amazing snaps on a trip to South Africa and said we have it way better right here on our own doorstep. “I just think we take it for granted especially all those workers that come up here and say there’s nothing to do,” he said. “I love taking underwater pics, I’m not just your average fisherman.“

Swim for Life celebrates five years in the Pilbara Award winning Indigenous youth employment program Swim for Life celebrated the New Year by reaching an important milestone – its fifth birthday. Since 2008, the YMCA program has assisted 80 young people in the Pilbara to qualify for their Bronze medallion swimming accreditation, while a further 30 have found employment in the sport and recreation industry, including as qualified life guards. In addition, the program has assisted 60 young people gain Senior First Aid qualifications and given 10 Indigenous youth the opportunity to become certified Austswim instructors. New Swim for Life co-ordinator Kate Tsorvas said she was excited to join the team in 2013 and take the program into its fifth successful year in Port Hedland. “It’s exciting to be joining a program that has helped so many young people in Port Hedland to secure their first job,” she said. “The Swim for Life program has really helped to make a difference
not only to the lives of young people, but has had a positive impact on the entire community by encouraging youth to aspire, act and achieve.” A qualified primary school teacher, Kate said she is currently completing several courses that will enable her to deliver hands-on training and experience to program participants in her new role. “I have grown up around water; I swam competitively when I was younger and love the beach,” she said. “I’m looking forward to applying the wide variety of skills I have obtained to work with Indigenous youth and mentor them through the Swim for Life program.” YMCA Perth CEO Ross Kyrwood said the YMCA Swim for Life program helped open doors for young people living in the Pilbara, with many using the experience to secure apprenticeships and traineeships. “Once participants secure their first job as a life guard, we can then offer them further training
