Roads cop worst of Peta By Tamara Binamat

Coolawanyah and 122mm at Wittenoom.

Forecasts indicated Ex Tropical Cyclone Peta would cross the coast directly over the Karratha area, but the system was fizzler, dying out two to three hours after reaching land. Ex TC Peta reached a maximum severity of category one and only stayed a cyclone for six hours. The system crossed the coast 20 kilometres to the east of Point Samson and died off within two to three hours, said Tom Delamonlte, severe weather forecaster at the Bureau of Meterology.

Gales were recorded at Cape Lambert and Roebourne and winds reached around 33-35 knots. Jon Newman, Superintendent at the Department of Fire and Emergency Services for the Pilbara region said no call outs for help were received during the system. Port Hedland received some minor inundation in low lying areas but DFES received no reports of any damage. “That’s what we would expect from a system that includes 95kph winds,” said Mr Newman.

Ex TC Peta started as low forming over land in the monsoon over the Kimberley before moving out over the water near Broome in the early hours of Monday. The system continued to track close to the coast, turning south west as it approached the Cape Lambert area when it was named Tropical Cyclone Peta at 11am on Wednesday.

“It’s really equivalent to the severe winter storms they get in Perth and with the building codes up here being significantly more stringent than Perth, our community was very well prepared to withstand it.

TC Peta crossed the coast about four hours later and was quickly downgraded to a tropical low.

“The thing for us in the coming days is what that rainfall around the place is likely to disrupt, [such as] road networks.

The Karratha area received 40 millimetres of rain in the 24hrs to 9am Thursday, but the more impressive falls were to the east with 262mm at Hooley, near the Fortescue River, 178mm at

“We urge people to check on road conditions before they make travel plans and not drive into water of unknown depth or current and certainly to avoid gravel roads until things dry out properly.

Cash compensation paid to seniors By Ben Leahy Elderly residents at Warambie Estate’s Seniors Village have received an extra $2,000 per household as compensation for their forced relocation last October. The seniors relocated into Warambie Estate late last year so that their previous apartments on Basset Road could be knocked down to make way for a $65 million city centre revitalisation project. To make the move as smooth as possible, seniors residents were able to have a say in the design of their new units, while the Shire also paid for their relocation expenses. However, Shire president Fiona White-Hartig said councillors felt a further cash compensation of $2,000 made to five households at Warambie Seniors Village was fair, despite the Shire having never made ex gratia payments to individuals before. “Council felt the seniors had suffered a real inconvenience in having to move to their new homes and we thought it appropriate to give them a small payment to help with the cost of adjusting to their new accommodation,” Ms WhiteHartig said. The relocation of the seniors village has been a sensitive issue ever since it became clear last year

that their old apartments would need to make way for a new main road running from the Dampier Highway to the Pelago Towers. In awarding the cash gifts to the seniors, councillors chose to override recommendations put forward by Shire of Roebourne staff. Shire staff had recommended that the ex gratia payments not be made because there was a “lack of precedent in gifting or donating to individuals”, which raised the possibility of similar cash claims being made in the future. Shire staff also said the $10,000 would be better used if held in reserve to help cover future costs relating to the State Government’s commitment to build a long term aged care facility to replace the Warambie Estate Seniors Village. However, Warambie Estate Seniors Village residents Alan and Kathy Green welcomed the payments and said seniors had been promised cash compensation at community meetings prior to their relocation. “We were thrilled to receive it,” Mr Green said. With the payments designed to help the residents purchase furniture or electrical goods to suit their new homes, Mr Green said he and his wife were planning on buying a new digital television.

Karratha in search of a sister act

UNSURE WHAT IS BEING DONE ABOUT SHARKS OFF OUR COAST?

Karratha is looking to build deeper ties with the global community after the Shire last week set up a new group to investigate the potential benefits of a sister city relationship. The Sister Cities Advisory Group will examine whether an international sister city would bring the town greater opportunities for international cooperation and business and cultural exchanges

WE’D LIKE TO SEND A CLEAR SIGNAL. We know there has been much discussion lately about sharks in WA. And we understand the need to do as much as possible, in regards to monitoring our coastline and sharing relevant information.

Shire of Roebourne president Fiona WhiteHartig said Karratha’s global economic links made it appropriate to investigate whether a formal international relationship would assist future growth.

That’s why we have increased all of our shark-monitoring measures, including the high-tech tagging systems that provide us with vital information about activity and movement. This allows us to communicate in real time, what’s happening in and around our shores – through the Surf Life Saving WA twitter feed.

“Our Shire has a real international focus in terms of our huge exports, our multicultural community and the wide range of international companies doing business here,” Ms White-Hartig said.

Plus, helicopter surveillance along our metro and south-west coastline has been boosted by 500 hours.

“Having a sister city relationship can really strengthen all of these things, and, as we grow as a region, we need to look at

whether we should also be trying to bring these benefits to our community,” she said. According to information from Shire staff, Australia has approximately 190 municipalities engaged in more than 600 sister city partnerships. Broome, Albany and Bunbury are among Western Australian towns with sister city relationships. “Many other local governments around Western Australia have very productive sister city relationships,” Ms White-Hartig said. Ms White-Hartig said the Sister Cities Advisory Group hopes to speak with resource companies, local businesses, schools, community groups and Aboriginal corporations as part of its review. It will also investigate which cities will make a good match with Karratha, with councillors noting informally at the January 21 council meeting that because of strong resource industry links a city in Japan, China or the US would seem the best choice.

Brand new 24-hour travel centre for North West road users A 24-hour travel centre will soon be built near Karratha, giving thousands of road users each day a new generation of service station amenity. The facility will include expansive dining facilities, fast food outlets, comprehensive public amenities and petrol. The Outback Travel Centre will be located on a 1.09 hectare site on Dampier Highway and is the latest addition to the growing number of businesses to join the Gap Ridge Industrial Estate, just two kilometres from Karratha Airport. LandCorp Industrial General Manager John Hackett said the Outback Travel Centre would service all road users in the region, including Karratha locals, Gap Ridge business employees, fly-in, fly-out staff, travellers and transport industry workers. “There are currently about 12,000 vehicles passing this site every day and this traffic is expected to grow to 17,000 within the next five years, so you can imagine how pivotal this travel centre will be in servicing these road users,” Mr Hackett said. “Because of the importance of this site catering for the high volume of general road users, as well as Gap Ridge Industrial Estate businesses, we wanted a high standard of service delivery for this land, and the Outback Travel Centre fits the bill perfectly. “It will raise the bar, providing a range of new services for road users in the North West.” Construction of the facility is due to start in 2014. This service facility is part of the Outback Travel Centre three-year $100 million investment plan for the development of four sites in the State’s North West - Newman, Carnarvon, Karratha and

There will be a car refuelling canopy allowing eight vehicles to refuel at any one time, plus a separate three-bay truck refuelling canopy for heavy vehicles. Mr Hackett said the special design of facilities by Outback Travel Centres will create a visually attractive gateway to Karratha. “Great effort has been made to ensure the travel centre will be an eye-catching structure with stylish detailing and also provide outstanding service for the full range of highway users,” he said. “It’s exactly the type of operation we wanted for this prime piece of real estate.”

KDCCI to lease space in Leisureplex By Ben Leahy The $63.7 million Karratha Leisureplex is coming closer to completion after councillors last week approved a tenant and identity logo for the facility. The Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry will now lease the Leisureplex’s entire tenancy space for its first two years of operation, with an option to extend for a further two years. The KDCCI were successful following a three-week tender process. Shire of Roebourne chief executive officer Chris Adams said the KDCCI was the perfect organisation to help ensure the Leisureplex became a community hub. “The Karratha Leisureplex will be one of the key activity centres for the Shire, so it will be a great fit to have a large organisation, like the KDCCI, in the office space,” Mr Adams said. “This facility is going be used every day by the community, schools and by businesses,” he said. KDCCI chief executive officer John Lally said the chamber planned to in-turn lease out space in the Leisureplex to small businesses involved in the leisure industry. “We are hoping the space can act as a business incubator,” Mr Lally said. “Imagine some people who cannot afford to rent an office all week but might just want an office for one or two days a week.”

“We are going to try and subsidise that kind of arrangement and keep the rent low for small businesses.” “We are also looking at the idea of sharing the office spaces, so there might be two or three small businesses sharing one office.” Mr Lally said this would help small businesses cross pollinate ideas and encourage them during the transitional stage between being home-based and becoming a larger operation. The KDCCI also hoped to set up a community room with basic facilities for small businesses, such as computers and printing and binding equipment. There would also be room to host functions and other events. Mr Lally said the KDCCI would now sit down to plan out the finer details but aimed to rent space to people involved in the leisure business, such as those involved in sports medicine or health and wellness. To help market the Leisureplex, council, last week, also agreed upon a brand identity and logo for the facility. Shire of Roebourne President Fiona White-Hartig said council settled on a design that represented movement and activity. “A lot of people think the logo looks a little bit like shade sails, and I think that really sums up our outdoor lifestyle and the wide range of sport and recreation activities that will be happening at the new facility,” Ms White-Hartig said.

Opposition Leader Mark McGowan said he would focus on fixing the Pilbara’s “housing crisis … once and for all” as part of a pitch for election votes in Karratha and Port Hedland last week. Mr McGowan said an elected Labor Government would set up a Pilbara Redevelopment Authority with enhanced powers to speed up the release of land in the region. The opposition leader was touring the North West with local Labor candidate Kelly Howlett to campaign for the March 9 State Elections. Mr McGowan said housing affordability was a pressing issue in the Pilbara with rents in some areas going up by 300 per cent in the last four years. “Affordable housing is one of the biggest problems in the Pilbara, with the BarnettGrylls Government failing to deliver the new housing lots required or adequately plan for the Pilbara’s future housing needs,” Mr McGowan said. High rentals over much of the past decade have been widely seen as putting a handbrake on the diversification of the local economy. In 2010, Premier Colin Barnett launched a vision to build industries outside the

resource sector by transforming Port Hedland and Karratha into cities with 50,000 residents and grow the population of Newman to 15,000. Mr McGowan on Wednesday said Pilbara Cities was a good initiative but lacked adequate powers. “The Pilbara Redevelopment Authority will work with the Pilbara Cities office but will have legislative teeth,” Mr McGowan said. “[The redevelopment authority will] essentially have legislative authority to cut through a lot of planning and other bottlenecks within the government system.” Mr McGowan added that if elected premier, he would take responsibility for regional development to ensure the Pilbara was not overlooked in policy making. In addition to housing, Mr McGowan said the Labor Party’s focus centred on delivering services and safe roads. He committed an additional $100 million toward constructing the Karratha Health Campus sooner and $54 million toward rebuilding the Newman Hospital to increase beds from 12 to 25 and increase maternity and mental health services. Pilbara residents needing to

travel for medical treatment would also be able to take advantage of $3 million going to the Patients Assistance Travel Scheme. Mr McGowan said a further $50 million would be provided to seal the road between Newman and Nullagine, while $9 million would be spent on improving the range of subjects taught in Pilbara schools. Other funding investments made by Mr McGowan included: • $6.5 million to Karratha Senior High School. • $2.9 million to Hedland Senior High School. • $14 million to the South Hedland and Karratha Campuses of the Pilbara Institute. • $5 million for the expansion of Lotteries House in South Hedland. • $7 million to the Shire of East Pilbara to build a multifunction community, sport and cyclone emergency centre in Nullagine. Further funding would also go toward a permanent motocross track in Hedland, skate parks in Marble Bar and Roebourne, rubbish collection in the Kiwirrkurra community and the establishment of a Roebourne Art Group Art Centre.

WALKINGTON AMPHITHEATRE

Rise of the Guardians (PG) Saturday 19 January at 7pm • The CSIRO’s solar research tower in Newcastle, NSW, uses solar thermal energy

Sun to shine on pioneering Pilbara power plant By Ben Leahy Australian and US scientists hope to build an innovative solar thermal power station in the North West after the Federal Government last week approved funding for the project. Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation scientists have begun designing the power plant in partnership with researchers from multinational corporation General Electric. The Pilbara plant’s innovation is in its ability to take energy from the sun and store it in a natural gas to create a “supercharged” fuel, commonly known as Solargas. Solargas releases 25 per cent more energy when it is burnt in a combined cycle power plant to power gas and steam turbines and generate electricity. Project leader Robbie McNaughton from the CSIRO said the Pilbara was chosen as the location for this pioneering project because it was hungry for energy. “The Pilbara is one of the premier solar locations in the world,” Mr McNaughton said. “And it has also got the added driver of being the only place in Australia at the moment that is really looking to build new power generation.” “However, as an isolated area, it would cost a lot of money [to build the infrastructure] to connect it to the grid in Eastern or South Western Australia.” If proven successful, the technology used in the Pilbara plant could be adopted around the world. GE already operates a number of combined cycle power plants and is interested in harnessing Solargas to

boost their efficiency. Mr McNaughton said Solargas was created in a process similar to using a magnifying glass to concentrate the sun’s rays. In the Pilbara power plant’s case, giant mirrors will capture and concentrate the sun’s rays to a single point to produce very high temperatures. Scientists then use the heat generated to induce a chemical reaction between natural gas and water. “That reaction adsorbs the concentrated solar heat and actually stores the energy in a chemical bond.” This creates the hydrogen-rich Solargas fuel. Mr McNaughton said “the process will allow the Pilbara plant to generate enough electricity to power a town the size of Karratha.” The ability to store the solar energy means that the power station has the potential to maintain a consistent 24hour energy output, rather than one dependent on direct sunlight. The technology and operational lessons developed at the plant could also help further research being undertaken at the CSIRO, such as solar driven liquid fuel production. Mr McNaughton said that instead of refining fuels from fossil fuels dug out of the ground, solar thermal energy could help scientists make fuels from scratch, including synthesised diesel. The emergence of SIZZLING such an industry would suit the Pilbara, which already SUMMER has plenty of sunlight and large-scale infrastructure to exportDEAL! liquid natural gas. Mr McNaughton hopes his project can light the way forward.

Mulataga development passes another hurdle By Ben Leahy The proposed Mulataga development is a step closer after the Shire of Roebourne last week amended the Karratha town planning scheme to allow for urban development on land earmarked for the project. Plans for the Mulataga development include the construction of up to 2,000 residential properties as well as dining and retail outlets on land adjacent to Bulgarra and Nickol Bay. Council agreed to rezone land for the development after allowing for a public notification period. They will now forward their amendment to the Western Australian Planning Commission for final approval. Shire of Roebourne chief executive officer Chris Adams said the amendment was part of the long process to develop the Mulataga area. “We needed to make this amendment to rezone some areas that are subject to the draft Mulataga Development Plan so the whole area is zoned for urban development,” Mr Adams said. “The final decision will be made by the WAPC, who will assess the amendment, particularly in terms of its acceptability with respect to coastal development setback and foreshore reserves.” “The planned development at Mulataga will still need to go through council’s regular development assessment process.” In November, Evan Campbell from Mirvac, the developers behind Mulataga, said the new development will include Karratha’s first coastal promenade along the Nickol Bay coastline. “Mystery Road will ultimately be realigned … to

create a scenic drive along the Mulataga Foreshore … [with] panoramic views over Nickol Bay and beyond to the Burrup Peninsula,” Mr Campbell said. He added that the development includes plans for a coastal node with approximately 500 square metres of retail floor space that will act as a “hub for shopping and dining alongside the waters of Nickol Bay”. There will also be an east-west transit link, a new primary school and significant chunks of public open space.

Reminder to use garden sprinkler on rostered days With summer upon us, the Water Corporation is reminding residents in the North West that a garden sprinkler roster remains in place. Water Corporation North West regional manager Peter McAllister said the sprinkler roster was introduced in 2007 by the State Government as part of state-wide water efficiency measures. “Research shows that watering gardens every second day is sufficient and in some cases they could survive on even less – watering any more than every second day is simply a waste of water and money” Mr McAllister said. Mr McAllister also said the response to the sprinkler roster had been positive, but that a small number of residents were still not complying with the North West sprinkler roster. “Since 1 July 2012, more than 901 North West residents have breached the sprinkler roster and in recent weeks inspectors have seen a relatively high incidence of

It is important to regularly check controllers and replace the back-up battery to ensure they are working properly. “Customers observed breaching the roster face a $100 fine. “Water Efficiency Inspectors patrol all towns in the North West but we also ask that the community be vigilant and notify the Water Corporation of any breaches by phoning 13 10 39.” Throughout the North West, lawns and gardens can only be watered once every alternate day, either before 9am or after 6pm. New childcare centre to open in Baynton West By Ben Leahy Karratha families desperate for more childcare services might get some relief with a new facility set to open in the Pam Buchanan Family Centre in Baynton West. Shire of Roebourne councillors last week selected local business Embracing Children to operate the new childcare centre, with services to commence once the Karratha Library relocates back to the Pilbara Institute. The State Government’s Education and Care Regulatory Unit will also need to first approve Embracing Children’s licence to operate in the centre. Embracing Children already operate three family day care centres in Karratha, with two in Warambie Estate and one in Baynton West. Shire of Roebourne President Fiona White-Hartig said the facility would help alleviate demand for childcare services.

• Michelle and Jaxson Lewis at a playgroup last year at the Pam Buchanan Family Centre

“We had always anticipated this space being used for a childcare centre, but the mould problems at the Pilbara Institute meant we had to move our library to the Pam Buchanan Family Centre to keep it operating,” Ms WhiteHartig said.

“The library is preparing to move back to the Pilbara Institute this April so it’s great that we have an operator who will be ready to start childcare services soon afterwards,” she said. Embracing Children owner Michelle Pisani said her team was thrilled to be the successful tenderer. “We are thankful for the opportunity to provide care and education to the children of Karratha, pending our licensing approval,” Ms Pisani said. Ms Pisani said she felt her tender had impressed Shire of Roebourne staff because it was financially viable and because she employed quality staff. Most of her employees have completed degrees in childcare and are on sponsored visas from the United Kingdom, Ireland and India. “We have quality staff, who are degree qualified,” Ms Pisani said. “We actually have qualified teachers in our centres, so the parents are getting that high level quality care, which they are not accustomed to in Karratha. Ms Pissani said her international staff also brought added diversity and cultural learning to her centres. Embracing children has applied for

two licences at the Pam Buchanan Family Centre. One will be for long day care, while the other side of the centre will be for before and after school care and halfday care. “We try to cater for everyone with our services, which also include Kindy pickup and drop off,” Ms Pisani said Embracing Children’s childcare centre will run alongside existing playgroups and community activities at the Pam Buchanan centre. The Shire has also moved to replace the Karratha Library books that were lost to mould damage at the Pilbara Institute. Nearly $100,000 worth of books were lost but will now be replaced to bring the library back to full capacity. “The mould problems were very unfortunate, but it’s time to put all of that behind us and prepare to re-open the library at the Pilbara Institute,” Ms White-Hartig said. “Our libraries are very popular community spaces and it will be great to bring the stock back up to its old levels so our library customers have more choice.”

Surviving the holiday road trip The car is packed, the kids are loaded in the back and seat belts are on, then you hear the dreaded cry – “Are we there yet?” and you’ve barely left the driveway. Sound familiar?

Make regular stops Pulling into a rest stop breaks up your long journey and allows everyone to stretch their legs. It will also give you a chance to stop at any landmarks along the way; the perfect opportunity to take a few snaps for the family album. Each region is different so taking a break is a great chance to explore some of the local attractions and pick up a few souvenirs. Fuel up Not just the car, it’s important to keep hungry tummies satisfied on a long trip to avoid cranky kids and grumpy adults. Pack some healthy snacks that everyone can share and keep plenty of water handy. As the weather heats up and the shops become fewer and further apart you’ll be glad you packed enough for everyone. Brain teasers I-Spy is a great way to keep the little ones entertained while older kids might enjoy brain teaser game books, crossword puzzles or sketch books. Stock Tip of the Week Sirius Resources (SIR) – Speculative Buy

Catch a movie Some cars now have built in DVD players and portable ones are always an option too. While you don’t want kids to watch movies the entire trip, they do come in handy. Before you leave, buy a few movies the kids have never seen before and they’ll be excited about watching something new, plus you’ll get at least an hour and a half of peace and quiet. For many people, a holiday is a once a year treat that can’t come soon enough. At times spending hours in the car is inevitable, but it doesn’t have to be a chore. With a little bit of preparation your journey will fly by and you’ll be sitting by the beach or river before you know it. What are your tips for entertaining the kids on the big drive through the North West?

Onslow kids thrive with Fish to Feed By Tamara Binamat In a unique display of catering for local needs, children in Onslow have access to an incentive program teaching important life skills as well as promoting the importance of making positive choices in the community. The Fish to Feed program offers children aged 4 to 12-years-old the opportunity to participate in regular fishing activities and water-based sports as a reward for regularly attending school and keeping out of trouble. The Fish to Feed program is funded by West Pilbara Communities for Children and run by community partner, the Pilbara Health Network. Amanda Hohneck, project manager for West Pilbara Communities for Children explained that once a month on a Sunday morning, local children are taken on a fishing excursion in Onslow. “They then have a cook-up of fish and salad for lunch, and sometimes the kids get to take their catches home with them,” she said. “And once a year all children at the Onslow School who have attended school a minimum of 85 per cent of the year, are invited to attend the Onslow School camp in Coral Bay. “The camp involves lots of water-based activities, such as snorkelling.” The program has the ongoing support of the primary school and also continues to offer training to parents and caregivers. This training is instrumental in promoting family involvement in fishing and joining together in healthy eating events. “The program has been designed to enable the most vulnerable and at risk children in Onslow the opportunity to join in all activities offered like this

program,” said Amanda. About 15 children attend the monthly Fish to Feed excursions and about 30 children attend the annual Coral Bay camp. The program is a huge success, with school attendance consistently high for local primary school children. Most students are attending school more than 85 per cent of the year with a majority sitting on a 90 per cent attendance rate. Amanda said the program works because children feel a sense of belonging and recognition. “Children feel safe and part of a great initiative,” she said. “It gives children something to do on the days that the programs are running.” The children attended the Coral Bay camp in November and each group participated in different activities in the mornings. The activities included a drift snorkel close to the shoreline, a trip out in a glass bottom boat and a trip in a bigger boat out to the outer reef, including more snorkeling and marine life spotting. In the evenings, there were some fun activities, including spotlight games and a very informative presentation by a marine biologist. The amazing people behind the Fish to Feed program have exciting plans for 2013, including cook ups, competitions and skills presentations. West Pilbara Communities for Children is part of Federal Government Family Support Program under Family and Children’s Services, which supports prevention and early intervention programs for families with children up to 12-yearsold, who are vulnerable and disadvantaged.

when you think you are doing well. Smaller pieces will spread the taste through every bite and you will need a lot less for the same taste.

3.

So keep it easy on yourself, master the food first and in the meantime experiment and find what you like and don’t like to do as exercise. Here are some easy tips for finding your way through all the confusion to good healthy food.

1. Email me at angelofcuisine@iinet.net.au and check out lots more recipes and inspirational ideas on my Facebook page

2.

If it’s in a packet, think carefully about it. Packaged foods have been processed in one way or another. Turn it over and read what you are about to eat. If you still want it after you’ve read the back, then put it in your trolley.

4.

5.

When adding ingredients that contain fat (even good fat) to salad, chop, dice or grate them up into small pieces. Nuts, avocado and cheese are all great in a salad but big chunks can have you working against yourself even

“Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds you plant” - Robert Louis Stevenson

Have a great breakfast. Great breakfast does not include cereal or toast. You want protein, good fat and fruit or vegetables. Cereal and toast will just bloat you straight away and have you off to a bad start for the day. Watch out for dried fruit. Most dried fruit is coated in oil or sugar to keep it preserved. Many also contain preservatives and unless it says sundried on the pack, well there’s no way of knowing what was used to dry it. So fresh fruit is best. Don’t be afraid of smoothies. They are quick, easy and you can load them up with lots of good things that you won’t even be able to taste. Try banana and cos lettuce with water instead of milk; it will look green but taste like banana.

6. Love the flavours you love. This

is pretty simple for me, if you like certain foods or flavours, don’t be afraid to put them together. If you like them on their own, you will like them together. Don’t cut up one piece of fruit, cut up three halves of different fruits and taste the difference.

10.

Drink water with a squeeze of lemon juice. There are endless benefits to this, some of the most important being it will wake up your liver, give you great inner health and make your skin look fantastic. Buy a bag and have one sitting on the bench so you don’t forget when you grab a drink. Buy great produce. You actually need to consume very little on a daily basis to survive and to keep healthy. So instead of buying huge slabs of fatty steak buy small pieces of beautifully cut lean steak and treat yourself well. Don’t be afraid of sauces but be wary. Life can be boring without a little sauce or salad dressing. That’s the key though, keep it little. You don’t need to drown your food or salad in it. Try just one teaspoon and then taste. If you need more, add a little at a time. Most of them are loaded with sugar, so keep it low and tasty with sauces and dressings. Don’t stress! Take it one thing at a time. Find the things you want to eat and work through it section by section until you are only buying the best for yourself. Books and magazines and the internet will have you bamboozled and you can quit before you even start. So keep it simple, look after yourself, eat what you love, but make it fresh, lean and great quality.

Alcohol education and prevention campaign to assist in improving anti-social behaviour

Mosquito minimisation activity commences Mosquito minimisation activity has commenced, with the Town of Port Hedland’s Environmental Health team placing mosquito control briquette tablets in storm water infrastructure, drains and in well known mosquito breeding sites. Mayor Kelly Howlett said with the anticipation of heavy rain following recent cyclonic activity, the Town was taking a proactive approach and implementing minimisation measures prior to rainfall. “The briquettes contain hormones which are released when they come into contact with water and will kill mosquito larvae and provide protection in treated areas for several months,” she said. “The larvae absorb the hormones which prevent them from developing into adult mosquitoes. “The briquette, which looks like a piece of charcoal, is longlasting and it only releases the hormones when it comes into contact with water.

“When the water in the breeding site dries up, the briquette will not be wasted and will reactivate when it rains.” Approximately 300 briquettes have been placed in known breeding sites and storm water infrastructures. Mayor Howlett said that while the briquettes cannot be used in all circumstances, it is one of the many methods the Town is undertaking to minimise mosquito numbers during the wet season. “Other activities include the larviciding of known breeding sites when there is rainfall, which involves chemically treating the water at the sites to prevent larvae from becoming adult mosquitoes. “This is a safe and effective method for treating sites near residential areas.” Residents can also assist in mosquito minimisation by undertaking the following procedures around their house: • Empty any unwanted water from containers

• Keep ornamental ponds stocked with mosquitoeating fish such as goldfish • Keep swimming pools well chlorinated and filtered, as well as free from leaves • Fill or drain depressions in the ground that hold water • Screen rainwater tanks with insect proof mesh • Ensure guttering does not hold water • Empty pot plant drip trays once a week or fill with sand • Report other areas of breeding outside your property to Environmental Health Services for treatment During times of high mosquito numbers, residents are encouraged to stay indoors during dawn and dusk, wear loose clothing covering arms and legs and use mosquito repellent with a high level of DEET. To report areas of breeding please contact the Environmental Health team at eh02@porthedland.wa.gov.au or call 9158 9316.

An Alcohol Education and Prevention campaign targeted at assisting community members who may be dealing with binge drinking and excessive consumption of alcohol has been rolled out in Hedland. The Town of Port Hedland and the Port Hedland Alcohol Management working group have partnered with the Department of Health and Public Health Advocacy Institute of Western Australia to offer the program. The Town is encouraging local businesses and organisations to join the campaign by displaying posters that have been created to promote the campaign. “The campaign posters have been specially designed by the Town and Port Hedland Alcohol Management working group to elicit emotional responses from the community,” Mayor Kelly Howlett said. “[This is] to raise awareness about the significance of binge drinking and excessive alcohol consumption and the effects it has on personal and family environments. “It is important for community members to know there are large support networks in the Town available to help them address their binge drinking or excessive alcohol consumption. “The Alcohol Education and Prevention campaign is part of the Town’s strategy to improve anti-social behaviour and address the underlying causes to create a safer community for our residents.” The campaign will be running over the next 12 months and will include a local advertising

campaign highlighting the effects of binge drinking and excessive alcohol consumption. To obtain copies of the posters or to learn more about how you can support this campaign, please contact the Town’s Community Safety Facilitator Neil Abernethy at csf@porthedland.wa.gov.au or call 9158 9370. Community members who would like to talk to someone about binge drinking or excessive alcohol consumption can contact the Pilbara Mental Health and Drug Service on 9174 1240. The Town of Port Hedland would like to thank the following agencies for their assistance in the implementation of the campaign: • Bloodwood Tree Association/ Wapa Maya Sobering Up Centre • Youth Accommodation Program, managed by the Youth Involvement Council • Hedland Well Women’s Centre • Hedland Health Campus • Pilbara Population Health • Pilbara Mental Health Drug and Alcohol Service • Department of Corrective Services • Pilbara Legal Service • Department of Indigenous Affairs • West Australian Police • Port Hedland Medical Centre • Kinetic Health The Town would like to also thank the Port Hedland Liquor Accord members/licensees for their support during this campaign.

Multivitamins are medicines and should be taken with care In light of research released this week showing more than half of Australians who take multivitamins don’t know they are medicines, NPS MedicineWise is reminding people that complementary medicines are medicines too. NPS MedicineWise clinical adviser Dr Andrew Boyden said people often consider complementary medicines, including herbal remedies and multivitamins, to be less powerful than prescription medicines. But like all medicines, complementary medicines can still cause side effects in some people, and may interact with other medicines and food. “There is the potential for side effects or interactions when taking medicines available over the counter or from supermarkets, health food shops or other shops, herbalists, naturopaths and the internet,” said Dr Boyden.

“Multivitamins and other complementary medicines should be treated as medicines and taken with care.” Multivitamins typically contain various vitamins and minerals, but many also contain other complementary medicines such as herbs. Even though herbs come from a natural source, many are known to interact with other medicines, and can cause side effects for some people. “It’s really important to be open with your health professional about any medicines you take, including supplements,” said Dr Boyden. “People may think that some doctors disapprove of complementary medicines, but that’s not always the case and your health professional will want to help you avoid any side effects and interactions with your other medicines.”

Many examples of ingredients that may be in your multivitamin can interact with other medicines or cause side effects. Supplements containing calcium, iron, magnesium or zinc can reduce the absorption of certain prescription medicines through the gut. Some people need to be careful how much vitamin C they take each day as it may increase their chance of kidney stones. And vitamin K can reduce the effect of a medicine called warfarin in preventing a blood clot. “These examples of possible interactions are all dependent on what else you are taking and at what doses, and sometimes also dependent on other lifestyle factors, so it really is important to talk to your health professional about all the medicines you’re taking to avoid adverse effects,” said Dr Boyden.

Investment Opportunity This is a rare opportunity to secure an investment or your own corporate / operational facility in the Karratha light industrial area. This is an excellent property that has been well designed and well laid out. The facilities are modern with the majority of the laydown in concrete with the balance in compacted road base. It has a separate modern office with reception, two offices, modern lunch room and excellent amenities. Operationally it is extremely practical and commercially very professional. Properties like this are difficult to find with services companies seeking to lease or expand constantly, placing great pressure on the market. This is a quality commercial and operational complex which will suit a variety of commercial applications. As an investment it will lease readily and as a commercial operation would have great appeal.

Modern reno What an opportunity to buy a quality investment in Nickol. The current owners have invested wisely in modern improvements and the standard of presentation is second to none. An investor cannot go wrong with this property, practically renovated with investment in mind and located in an area surrounded by good quality homes, the property comes under the Tambrey Primary School zone. The four spacious bedrooms with builtin-robes and custom air-conditioning make it a great retreat. The ultra-modern kitchen has all the best equipment and fit out to suit the most fastidious buyer. The kitchen is a step to the dining area and huge living room and overlooks the alfresco area which is a full-length patio / entertaining area and the pool. The backyard has plenty of room for the kids to play and parents to relax by the pool.

The huge workshop caps off the allround appeal of this home. The newly upgraded Tambrey Oval is in walking distance as well as the soon to be revamped Tambrey Function Centre. This needs to be added to list of must see properties, inspection will not disappoint.

Following the puppet show, the centre will screen the Kristen Stewart-starring movie Twilight Breaking Dawn: Part Two. The MDCC has been closed since mid-December 2012 for technical upgrade works, including installation of a new digital projector, new screen and a modern lighting system. Mayor Kelly Howlett said the upgrades will allow more movies and live shows to be held at the centre. “The new digital projector brings the Matt Dann Cultural Centre on par with other cinemas in the city and metro regions,” Mayor Kelly Howlett said. “It will allow the centre to screen movies soon after they have been released in the major cinemas, instead of a few months later, which was the case with the old 35 millimetre projector. “Upgrading the lighting and trussing system also means we can attract more live shows from Australia and the world, as it reduces the time required for crew to set up the shows, therefore reducing lead up times between performances.” The upgrade will be completed in three stages,

as most of the material is being fabricated and sourced internationally. The first stage involves the installation of pulleys and cables for the trussing system, which will be used for the lights and movie screen, and will be completed in time for reopening this Saturday. The following two stages will include the installation of the digital cinema projector and new screen, installation of trussing and new lights. The Town will keep the old lights for historical purposes, with some of the spotlights dating back to the 1930s. Mayor Howlett said the new equipment provided better training opportunities for students aspiring to careers in theatre or movies, giving them a great foundation for future studies and an insight into this field. The technical upgrade of the Matt Dann Cultural Centre is a partnership project between the Town of Port Hedland, the Department of Education and Hedland Senior High School. Sticks, Stones and Broken Bones will be performed from 5pm and is a shadow puppet comedy, which includes flying chickens,

Early birders received discounted entry to the relay, which will be a two-day team event run from Dampier to Millstream and back. With eight stages, teams will need to be dogged to survive the relay’s run, bus, road bike, mountain bike, cross country walk, swim, 4WD and paddling legs. The festival will also open with a Welcome Party, featuring music, entertainment and food at Millars Well, before winding down with a more casual family finale event to mark the finish of the relay on the Sunday afternoon. Event director Peter McKay said he was encouraged by early interest in the relay but was more focused on delivering a smooth first edition of the event. “For the first Red Dog Festival we might even limit the number of teams,” Mr McKay said. “We would be happy

But that idea crystalised into a multistage event once the release of the Red Dog movie reminded him of the free spirited nature of the Pilbara’s most famous canine. He said Red Dog’s “wandering spirit” inspired him to get more people to journey out through the natural beauty of the Pilbara. While the Red Dog Festival will aim to attract visitors from around the country, Mr McKay hopes locals will be at the centre of the

event. “Some locals have never even made it out to Millstream,” Mr McKay said. But more than the attraction of exploring their own backyard, Mr McKay hopes locals will be drawn to the social aspect of the community festival, assuring participants the competition will not be dog-eat-dog. “This is not an extreme adventure race,” Mr McKay said. Instead, he said it would be a safe, family friendly event with competing teams camping together on the Saturday night and the rest of the community getting involved at the opening and closing parties. While early bird registrations have closed, interested people can visit the Red Dog Festival website www.reddogfestival. com.au for more information.

What started out as a joke between friends has culminated in a High Voltage rock tribute to the life and times of Bon Scott. Antonio Corea is High Voltage Rock n Roll, a tribute act to the legendary late singer of ACDC, Bon Scott. Antonio said he was constantly being told he looked like Bon Scott when he was younger, so he jumped in a recording studio and was convinced he could impersonate Bon Scott’s singing ability as well! With a different outfit for every song, Antonio now performs hits such as TNT, Long Way to the Top and Highway to Hell. A complete audio visual display, the gig features

Antonio singing live in front of footage of Bon Scott in his heyday. A true Rocker, Antonio said he offers complete entertainment for his audience. “It’s like getting a part in a movie and being an actor,” said Antonio. “Channelling the life persona of the character, the songs are the script. “I’ve always enjoyed dressing and acting out on my own original productions but never really thought of playing anyone else. “It’s been so much fun to even attempt to be like Bon Scott, he is

taken very seriously and is loved so much. “I can only wish that I do the great man justice and people enjoy it. “I know then that Bon Scott is all in our hearts. “It’s all about putting smiles on dials.” Antonio Corea and the High Voltage Rock n Roll show will be performed live at the Tambrey Tavern in Karratha for Australia Day, this Saturday January 26 kicking off at 8:30pm.

Let there be Rock.

It’s been so much fun to even attempt to be like Bon Scott, he is taken very seriously and is loved so much.

Hope Springs Starring: Merryl Streep, Tommy-Lee Jones and Steve Carel

By Sean Smith, Karratha Three big-named actors, acting fabulously in a nice, simple little movie. Kay (Meryl Streep) discovers a book by a very well renowned relationships counsellor, named Dr Felds (Steve Carrel). The book inspires Kay to throw caution to the wind, so she books an appointment with Dr Felds. Arnold (Tommy-Lee Jones), Kay’s husband, is extremely reluctant to go with her. He doesn’t see how much they have grown apart, even though they have slept in separate rooms for

many years. He begrudgingly agrees to join Kay on her mission to fix the intimacy side of their relationship. Steve Carrel plays a mildmannered doctor. It’s refreshing to see him play a reserved role. Tommy-Lee Jones is not a man in black; he’s a man in denial. He’s not a person I particularly liked at the beginning, but I end up respecting and admiring him at the end of the movie. Merryl Streep is her usual awesome self. She plays the role of a sad, frustrated, middleaged, suburban housewife beautifully.

You can’t help but feel her absolute frustration, awkwardness and sheer sadness. I enjoyed this movie, however I did not think I would. A movie based on a sexually frustrated, grumpy middle aged American couple would not usually appeal to me, especially when the main character looked scarily like my mother! Get out of your movie comfort zone and go see something different. ..and hope and pray the main character doesn’t look like your mother. See the movie and you’ll understand what I mean.

10 tips to getting debt free faster Western Australia-based Crown Lending is urging home loan borrowers to take advantage of record low interest rates to slash debt in 2013. Crown Lending chief executive officer Scott Parry said consumers were more likely to experience debtrelated stress in January than in any other month, making the New Year the ideal time to take action against debt. “How often do we make the same New Year’s resolutions every December, whether it’s to lose weight, eat better, drink less or exercise more, only to fall off the wagon after a month or two at best?” Mr Parry said. “The same pattern applies with debt reduction where, come January 1, you’re no better off financially than you were the year before.”

But Mr Parry said the New Year was the ideal time to take stock of personal finances, especially with home loan interest rates predicted to fall even further in 2013. “As rates decline, housing affordability improves and home loan repayments moderate,” Mr Perry said. “Rather than borrowing more, homeowners should take this opportunity to increase their repayments or make additional repayments on their loan. “Many people struggle to pay off their loan and end up in debt for 30 years or more,” Mr Parry said. “Instead of chipping away at a home loan for several decades, the trick to getting out of debt comes down to discipline, creating a smart money management plan and making sure you stick to it.”

Mr Parry said his top ten tips for getting out of debt in 2013 were: 1. Consolidate debt. Consolidate existing bad debt, such as credit cards, personal loans and car loans, into your home loan. Getting this debt onto a lower interest rate will help ease your cash flow crisis and pay your debt off faster. 2. Make your money work for you, not the banks. Get your income banked directly into your home loan account, with your savings counting towards your loan so you pay less interest. 3. Keep up your repayments. Keep paying at your old interest rate when rates drop to save big in the long run. If possible, you should never decrease your mortgage payments. 4. Automate your Money Management. Get your income automatically paid into your loan from your payroll officer. Don’t wait to pay extra with what money is left over at the end of the month as there is usually very little to work with. 5. Don’t refinance onto another 30-year term. Every time you refinance the 30-year clock is reset and you are back at the start of another 30-year mortgage. Instead you should refinance so that you keep the existing

term left on your mortgage. 6. Put large lump sums towards your mortgage. Sums of money such as tax returns or bonus payments can save years of interest on your loan. Even small lump sums towards your mortgage will add up over the long run. 7. Think about your spending. Make higher repayments by cutting back on other expenses. Small sacrifices, like making lunch instead of buying it or cutting back on coffee, can lead to big savings in the long-term. 8. Set short term Financial Goals. Like everything, we get better results when we have a plan in place. If you want to pay $12,000 off your home loan this year set the goal of paying $1000 per month and monitor it regularly. Always reward yourself when you achieve the goal. 9. Cut up your credit card. If you can, get rid of your credit cards completely and switch to a debit card. You think and spend differently with cash than you do with credit. 10. Live within your means. Set a weekly spending allowance and stick to it. If you can’t afford something using cash, don’t buy it.

Local port sets new record for tonnes on a tide The Port Hedland Port Authority has started the year with a new tonnage record for the largest departure of iron ore on a single tide. The new record of 1,059,740 tonnes was set last Tuesday January 15, 2013 and beat the previous record set in June 2012 by more than 19,000 tonnes. It was also the first time six cape-sized vessels sailed on a single tide to achieve the milestone.

Deputy Harbour Master Leon Strydom said the new record could not have been achieved without the precise execution by the whole operations team. “This achievement is yet another milestone in the port and is certain to repeat itself through the determination of all port users, to promote our vision to be the world’s leading port, helping to create a sustainable region,” he said.

Hyder Consulting acquires BCH Engineering Multi-national design and engineering consultancy Hyder Consulting on Tuesday announced its acquisition of BCH Engineering Consultants Pty Ltd. BCH Engineering is a Western Australia based consultancy with expertise in the oil, gas, mining, resources, marine, civil infrastructure, land development and industrial sectors. This is the second acquisition for Hyder in the last 12 months, expansion that the company’s Australasian Managing Director, Greg Steele, says is a vital step in Hyder’s growth within the energy and resources sectors. “We’re pleased to join forces with BCH Engineering,” Mr Steele said. “The company brings a Western Australian presence and multi-disciplinary capabilities, as well as strong and prosperous relationships with key clients.” “BCH’s client focus and commitment to excellence is perfectly aligned with Hyder so

the collaboration between our teams will ensure we’re a very strong player in the market. “This acquisition and established client base will increase momentum for our progression into the west.”

We believe both companies have aligned goals when it comes to expectations, delivery, quality and culture.

If you have plans to build now or in the future a responsive and accommodating Design & Drafting service, providing a full set of Council required documents for everything from Unit Developments, New Homes to Commercial Buildings or whatever your next Building Venture is.

BCH Engineering Consultants Director Peter Britt said BCH looks forward to a successful partnership with Hyder. “We believe both companies have aligned goals when it comes to expectations, delivery, quality and culture,” he said. “The merger will allow both parties to develop relationships with clients in the Pilbara and throughout Western Australia. “I believe the key to success will be to maintain the close personal relationships we have developed with our existing clients, and with Hyder’s strong reputation behind us we can confidently offer a more diversified range of services to them.” BCH Engineering will be known as ‘BCH Hyder’ but will continue to operate as BCH Engineering Consultants Pty Ltd, as part of the Hyder Consulting group of companies. BCH Directors Peter Britt, Elim Clark and David Teahan will occupy key roles within Hyder Consulting.

Older Aussies need to get physical Most elderly people, who engage in physical activity, choose only one type of exercise, a study published by Sports Medicine Australia has shown. This activity is most commonly walking. However, researchers said elderly people should combine this with other forms of exercise to ensure better all round health. The study was published in The Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport and looked at physical activity in Australians aged over 65 years. Lead author, Dr Merom Dafna from the University of Western Sydney, said the study found that elderly people who improved their strength, flexibility and balance in addition to their cardiorespiratory fitness made the best health gains. “Australian men and women are expected to live an additional 18 and 20 years respectively, and are facing the challenges of [how to age] successfully,” Dr Merom said. “Participation in regular physical activity, and the types of physical activity undertaken, may discriminate between adults who successfully age from those who do not,” Dr Merom said. Results from the study showed that of those surveyed, 32 per cent did not exercise at all in the past year, while 40 per cent participated in only one type of activity. Among

those

who

engaged

exclusively in one activity, 53 per cent said their only exercise was walking. The top four sports for men and women combined after walking (45.6 per cent) were bowls (9.9 per cent), aerobics and calisthenics (9.1 per cent), golf (7.7 per cent) and swimming (6.4 per cent). Gym work, cycling, tennis, dancing, fishing, tai chi, weight lifting and yoga were reported by less than 5 per cent of older adults. “Walking may not provide optimal protection for prevalent adverse health conditions,” Dr Merom said. “For example, the most efficacious exercise programs for falls prevention were those that included high challenge balance training, for example tai chi. “Whilst those that only walked are one step ahead of those not participating in any physical activity at all, to improve their health they should increase their participation in … activities that will improve balance, coordination and reaction time.” Dr Merom said there was a need for more research into which physical activities were and are successful in slowing ageing. “Raising awareness on the types of activities that can most benefit the elderly, including those that achieve several fitness dimensions all at once … is certainly warranted,” Dr Merom said.

Wow, how quickly did the waters calm after Cyclone Narelle passed? And then, the low that crossed over us days later seemed to bring far worse winds than the cyclone itself! It has been very humid with lots of rain, so it will be very green in Exmouth this coming month. Extra rain has been falling on the other side of the gulf as well, which is a bonus for fishing and the health and ecosystem of the gulf. There are many people who believe that lots of rain brings plenty of nutrients in to the gulf and surrounding waters, which in turn make it a good year ahead for fishing. Let’s hope so! The ocean was very clear just days after the cyclone, and little wind meant many anglers getting out early to catch up on the fishing. Terry Thomas took some mates fishing on his boat Hammerhead and caught some ruby jobfish and 8-bar cod. They were using squid and mullet for bait in deep waters west of the lighthouse. Terry also did a trip to Long Island and camped onboard the boat for the night while on anchor. During the days, Terry reported plenty of action with reef fishing and the sunsets were amazing each evening on the water. There have been turtles hatching during the evenings and this means many predatory species, like spangled emperor and sharks, have been hanging in close to the shoreline in search of an easy feed.

Daniel Ridgeway from Perth has been using lures at night along the shoreline and catching some of these predators. The night is much cooler for fishing and Daniel tells me it’s a bonus because you don’t get sunburnt! He has caught many fish during his stay and only kept a mere two for a few fresh dinners. Renowned skipper Ross Newton from Reel Teaser is here again with his partner (and avid angler) Tracey for the summer. The crew came to Exmouth via the Rowley Shoals and Monte Bellow Islands, catching many fish in between. The highlight of the trip was Tracey’s son Christopher catching a broadbill off the Rowley Shoals. Ross and Tracey have caught broadbill in Exmouth and will no doubt be out there again to target these gladiators of the ocean.

Wanangkura Stadium profiled by design magazine Hedland’s Wanangkura Stadium recreational facility is receiving international attention for its unique design after it was featured on the front page of a leading Asia Pacific architectural magazine. The stadium was profiled in the December issue of Architectural Review Asia Pacific, a publication distributed in 4,000 newsstands across Australia and Asia Pacific. The magazine’s writers were in Port Hedland in April 2012, while the final touches were being made to the building.

Mayor Kelly Howlett said that since its opening in July 2012, the stadium has received positive reviews from the community and critics alike. “Architecturally, the building is like no other in Western Australia,” Ms Howlett said.
