POLICE WATCH

By Senior Constable Newby

Karratha’s heartwarming community spirit Sally Habets and Benjamin Berry would like to express their immense gratitude to the neighbours, friends, total strangers and organisations that helped us following the sudden death of our precious Shayne prior to Christmas. These people include Tasha, Coral, Nadine, Damien and family, Russell, Debbie, Toni, Sam, BJ and Matt, Annette, Giselle and family, Josh and his brother, John and Clint, Rosy in Perth. All the staff at Pilbara Mental Health Service, Roslyn at Population Health, staff at Karratha Primary School, especially Shona and Martin, Father Steven and the Catholic Church, Doctors and Nurses at Nickol Bay Hospital. Staff at Nickol Bay Jewellers, Rose at

Collins Booksellers, the T Ball Association, the Salvation Army, the kind staff at Centelink, Karratha Library and Ataps, Carolyn at CRS, Glenda, staff at I-Tech, St John’s Ambulance Service and Karratha Police especially Constable Huxley. Most of these people were strangers to us. Yet we have been overwhelmed by them welcoming us into their families, including us in their outings and celebrations, giving us gifts of home cooked food, practical help, understanding, consideration, support, someone to talk to, Christmas presents and so much more. We had no idea there were so many kind, generous people in Karratha. Thank you from Sally and Ben.

More regional police officers an election focus By Ben Leahy The WA Police Union have welcomed a pre-election promise by the Opposition to add 500 new police officers to the State’s force and challenged the Government to do the same. With 1,500 new residents arriving in Western Australia each week, including into the booming Pilbara region, WA Police Union president George Tilbury said police numbers were not keeping up. “An increase in the Pilbara’s permanent and transient population has put considerable pressure on Pilbara Police,” Mr Tilbury said. “We want a good proportion of extra Police to be stationed in the Pilbara, especially with the current estimated resident population figure for 2020 at more than 62,000 people.” The Police Union have been campaigning for more police officers since last year. In response, Opposition Leader Mark McGowan said his Party plans to fund 500 new officers in addition to the 170 officers accounted for in the current budget. That would add up to 670 officers by 2017-18.

Mr McGowan said that in contrast the Government had failed to deliver on its commitment to recruit 350 officers over three-years. To date, 180 of these police officers have been delivered leaving 170 officers to be hired over the next 18 months. Mr McGowan said the Liberal Party was backpedalling at the same time that motor vehicle theft had increased by 30 per cent and property offences by 11.5 per cent since 2009-10. However, the Liberal Party last week also focused on law and order ahead the elections by announcing plans for mandatory sentencing for serious home invasions. Under the Liberal proposal: • An offender who breaks into a house and violently rapes someone will face a minimum of 15 years jail. • An offender who breaks into a house and indecently assaults someone will face a minimum of 3 years, 9 months jail. • A juvenile aged 16-years-old and above who commits serious offences of physical or sexual violence in the course of a home invasion will face a three-year mandatory minimum period of detention.

Truck accident unearths new Pilbara tourist attraction Modelling & Deportment Classes due to start in term 1 for ages 13yrs to 18yrs to enquire please call Kasey 0438 527 395

By Ben Leahy

No one was hurt in the accident.

Motorists near Port Hedland were repeatedly delayed this month as authorities struggled to remove a 350 tonne piece of mining equipment from the Great Northern Highway.

Fiona Findley from Main Roads told the ABC last week that she expected the engineers, who were being brought in to assess how to remove the equipment, would need to “dismantle it piece by piece”.

The BHP Billiton mining boom conveyor tipped free from the truck transporting it near Wallwork Road while on route to Finucane Island.

While engineers were making their assessment, the equipment was moved to the side of the highway to allow traffic through.

And with the Pilbara yet to have its own version of The Big Banana or Big Lobster, the big mining equipment soon drew visitors. Ms Findley told the ABC that it had “become quite a tourist attraction”. However, she emphasised that safety was the top priority for Main Roads, with a fence being erected to keep people away from the fallen equipment.

Pilbara small businesses maintain optimism By Ben Leahy

UNSURE WHAT IS BEING DONE ABOUT SHARKS OFF OUR COAST?

WE’D LIKE TO SEND A CLEAR SIGNAL. We know there has been much discussion lately about sharks in WA. And we understand the need to do as much as possible, in regards to monitoring our coastline and sharing relevant information. That’s why we have increased all of our shark-monitoring measures, including the high-tech tagging systems that provide us with vital information about activity and movement. This allows us to communicate in real time, what’s happening in and around our shores – through the Surf Life Saving WA twitter feed. Plus, helicopter surveillance along our metro and south-west coastline has been boosted by 500 hours.

A recently released survey has found that Pilbara small businesses remain optimistic despite facing challenges in attracting and retaining staff and moving into online sales. The State of Small Business report by the Small Business Development Corporation surveyed 919 small businesses across the State, including 27 in the Pilbara region. Optimism in the Pilbara was evident in the report’s finding that 69 per cent of Pilbara businesses planned to grow or improve in the following 12 months. In a sign of diversification, more than 40 per cent of Pilbara businesses polled were less than 5-years old as compared to approximately 25 per cent for the rest of the State. However, 54 per cent of Pilbara respondents said that it was very difficult to attract and retain staff compared with only 22 per cent of businesses in the Perth metropolitan area. Pilbara businesses were also lagging in converting to online sales with half of local respondents generating no business at all from the Internet. According to the survey, retail traders were the most common small businesses in the Pilbara, while the booming property market meant real estate came in second. The Pilbara also had noticeably less small businesses engaged in manufacturing as compared to the rest of the State. Following on from this report, Regional Development Australia Pilbara are undertaking another study on The Cost of Doing Business in the Pilbara. With the cost of doing business in the Pilbara far higher than the rest of the State, the report aims to build a Business Cost Index. This data will be used to help governments, businesses and non-governmental organisations formulate policies and plan for future costs. Any local business interested in completing the survey should email david@mccormickit.com before February 21.

BHP Billiton found guilty over worker’s death BHP Billiton Iron Ore was found guilty of failing to provide a safe working environment at Perth Magistrate’s Court on January 31, following a four and a half year investigation and prosecution lead by the Department of Mines and Petroleum Andrew McLaughlin died on July 29, 2008, after he was crushed by a scissor lift at BHP Billiton’s Nelson Point rail workshop in Port Hedland. Magistrate Peter Malone found the company failed to provide instruction and supervision, or implement and enforce a suitable job hazard assessment, ultimately causing Mr McLaughlin’s death. The court noted that Mr McLaughlin’s action – putting his body into the descent path of the scissor lift when a safety bar was not in place – was dangerous. The Magistrate noted that Mr McLaughlin did so because he had not, through the process of JHAs and associated supervision, addressed the hazards and controls associated with the work he was carrying out. Departments of Mines and Petroleum resources safety executive director Simon Ridge said mining safety remained the department’s number one priority and this particular case highlighted the importance of safety at WA mines, including those in the Pilbara. “One death is one too many – we want every mining worker out there returning to their family and friends safe and sound at the end of their rosters,” he said. “This successful prosecution should send a strong warning to mining companies across the State.”

“While the majority of mining operators in WA, including those in the Pilbara, operate to high safety standards, the department will hold those who aren’t doing the right thing to account.” The DMP said its 63-strong safety inspector team conducts an average of 2,400 site visits to WA operations every year. Last year, this involved 300 site inspections in the North West and 27 prohibition notices issued since July 2012, requiring operators to temporarily shut down parts of their operations until the department is satisfied safety issues have been rectified. The matter involving the death of Mr McLaughlin has now been adjourned to March 19 for sentencing at Perth Magistrate’s Court. This maximum penalty for this offence is $400,000.

Algae leads way to greener industries in the Pilbara

• Premier Barnett with local Liberal candidate George Levissianos

and protein rich feed for aqua culture or cattle,” Mr Caspari said.

State Premier Colin Barnett and Pilbara government figures have hailed a new plant creating biodiesel from algae as a sign business is diversifying in the region.

Aurora Algae was formed out of research conducted at the University of California in Berkeley, but has now concentrated its production exclusively in the Pilbara.

Aurora Algae is set to relocate to its new $86 million commercial facility in the Maitland Industrial Estate after running a successful demonstration plant in Karratha for the past two years.

The Pilbara offers the project a number of advantages, including long hours of sunlight, low rainfall and flat lands close to the sea and important infrastructure.

Aurora Algae managing director Matthew Caspari said the company’s demonstration facility had proven the commercial viability of the project.

Aurora’s location close to resource companies is also profitable as it can process carbon dioxide waste from in its algae pools.

“We’ve had extremely successful results in producing our three products; biodiesel, which can be used in the mining sector, Omega 3 fatty acid, which are a human nutrition product,

Premier Barnett said Aurora Algae was engaged in a world leading industry.

“This is very much a science project.” “It has gone through its development period employing about 50 people.” “It will now go into the full production commercial stage with a further 170 jobs, which is great news for the State. Premier Barnett also said the State Government had contributed $10 million towards a $30 million pipe that would bring seawater into the Maitland Industrial Estate. New classrooms for Exmouth high school Students at Exmouth District High School have begun the 2013 school year with brand new buildings as part of a $15.87million State Government investment. Premier Colin Barnett opened the new buildings last week and said the upgrade was a great way for students to start the new school year. “The opening of these wonderful new buildings and upgrades to existing facilities marks an important move forward for the growing Exmouth community,” the Premier said. “These new learning and teaching facilities will enhance the school’s ability to provide students with excellent marine studies’ courses and to maintain working relationships with the local mining industry to provide pathways for students pursuing careers in mining. “The out-dated buildings from the 1960s have been replaced by top-class, modern buildings, giving regional students the opportunity to learn in a

The group launched their Vote Arts campaign in late January with immediate results, as a number of local candidates announced policies in support of the arts. National Party candidate Brendon Grylls said his party would commit $16 million over four years to regional arts programs if elected. As part of the funding, the Nationals released a discussion paper that acknowledged the key role the arts play in creating vibrant regional communities. Labor candidate Kelly Howlett also recently made a $1 million commitment to the Roebourne Arts Centre.

The Premier said the new buildings included two new four-classroom general teaching blocks; library; art room; drama and music rooms; sports courts; and extensive landscaping and gardener facilities. An additional $877,000 Royalties for Regions funding enabled the schools two new courts to be covered. Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the covered courts provided an outstanding community facility for the people of Exmouth. “It’s important for regional families to have access to recreational facilities and the new undercover sports courts at Exmouth District High School will be available to the community outside school hours,” Mr Grylls said. The upgrade to Exmouth District High School completes a total of eight new and replacement schools opening this year in Western Australia, including the Baynton West Primary School in Karratha.

Country Arts WA chief executive officer Jessica Machin welcomed the announcements and urged the community to have their say in how the funding should be spent. “The WA National’s paper is open for discussion, which means that communities, organisations and individuals need to be active to ensure their voices are heard,” Ms Machin said. Ms Machin said the Party’s discussion paper cites plans for increased funding to regional entertainment centres and to grassroots arts and culture groups, who deliver significant outcomes for regional WA. Ms Machin is now calling on all candidates to outline their vision for arts in regional Western Australia ahead of the elections.

Decoding faith and philosophy

Dreamer’s Hill brought back down to earth By Ben Leahy Dreamer’s Hill will be a hill no more once a Shire of Roebourne facelift is complete. The Shire is currently leveling the site as part of earthworks to improve its use as a community space for the private sale of cars, motorbikes and boats. The works will include a formal car parking layout, improved drainage and a compacted surface so the site can be used in all weather. With Dreamer’s Hill having become entrenched in Karratha’s folklore, Shire of Roebourne chief executive officer Chris Adams was quick to point out that he wouldn’t dream of converting the site to other uses. “Going down to Dreamer’s Hill to look at the vehicles up for sale is a weekend ritual in Karratha, and the works we are

Free Weekly 9-10 February 2013

undertaking on the site will not impact that at all,” Mr Adams said. He added that the mound in the centre of Dreamer’s Hill was actually leftover soil from previous road construction projects and now needed to be removed to improve drainage on the site. “A lot of people don’t realise that the Dreamer’s Hill mound was actually man made,” Mr Adams said. “Unfortunately it is affecting the drainage of the site so the Shire is removing it. Mr Adams said the Dreamer’s Hill facelift would also complement the recently installed public art on Dampier Highway and be an asset for future developments. “With the development of the Tambrey Neighbourhood Centre approaching, we need to ensure there is adequate parking in the area and these works will help achieve that.”

By Tom Kavanagh, Principal, St Luke’s College While most Pilbara kids were enjoying their summer holidays by the pool, four students from St Luke’s College were instead exploring the deeper mysteries of the universe. The students spent one week, accompanied by teacher Sinead McArdle, in Notre Dame University in the United States extending their thought processes through a Cultural De-Coding conference. Chosen as part of an extension program that exists in the College, the students were exposed to a range of philosophies and faiths as well as challenging questions relating to society, the environment and community. Over the four days, the students explored the disciplines of archaeology, iconography, philosophy, theology, theatre, forensic law, Middle East politics and Australian cinema. A highlight for many of the participants was a panel discussion offered on the final

day, which focussed on issues arising from the differences and similarities between faiths. Program co-ordinator Dr Angela McCarthy said the panel session was an important addition to the Cultural DeCoding program. “Our panellists included Rabbi Dovid Freilich (Judaism), Ajhan Bramali (Buddhism), Sheik Muhammad Agherdein (Islam) and Dr Michelle Jones (Christianity),” Ms McCarthy said.

Financial Markets By Brenton Reynolds

Local Australian markets finished this week strongly, with the ASX200 closing up 86 points (1.78 per cent) for the week ending February 1. Interestingly, Wednesday saw the end of a 10-day upward streak in which the market rallied plus 3.76 per cent. The last time this occurred was in October 2003, near the beginning of the resources boom that lasted until October 2007. US Markets finished higher on Friday after encouraging manufacturing data and a jobs report that largely matched expectations. The Dow Jones closed the week at 14,009 points, which means it has now rallied by 5.77 per cent for the year in a very bullish sign.

Pilbara traditional owners in land deal with Rio By Ben Leahy The Yinhawangka People of the central Pilbara region have granted mining giant Rio Tinto future access to their lands in a major deal signed last Tuesday February 6. Rio will, in return, provide the Yinhawangka community with employment and business opportunities as well as a percentage of mining royalties. The Yinhawangka People’s native title claim extends over approximately one million hectares of land in the central Pilbara, including the mining town of Paraburdoo. It also takes in four existing iron ore mines and many areas scheduled for future development, including Western Range, Turee Syncline, Western

Turner Syncline section 17 and several deposits near West Angelas. Tuesday’s agreement will provide a range of benefits to the Yinhawangka community, including income from mining, employment opportunities, support for Aboriginal business development and collaborative management of environmental and cultural heritage. The Yinhawangka People will also set up a future fund to manage mining royalties received from Rio. Rio Tinto now has two more agreements under negotiation with Pilbara traditional owners. When these are complete, the company’s entire sphere of operations in the Pilbara will be covered by long lasting agreements.

Chervron to compensate fishing industry for Wheatstone project By Ben Leahy Commercial fishers affected by Chevron’s Wheatstone project near Onslow will be able to seek compensation without giving up their licences under a new scheme announced in January.

impartially an independent committee has been set up by the Department of Fisheries. “The Committee of Advice is assessing the claims and will provide Chevron with recommendations on the validity of these claims in the

coming weeks,” Mr Moore said. The Minister said it was likely others in the resources industry would look to this independent process created for the Wheatstone Project and seek to replicate it in the future.

Minister for Mines and Petroleum; and Fisheries Norman Moore said the scheme was Western Australia’s first non-statutory compensation scheme. “Most fisheries compensation schemes operated by the Department of Fisheries have been statutory schemes, which are based on commercial fishers surrendering their entitlement or licences and receiving compensation in return,” Mr Moore said. “This new mechanism will provide a process through which commercial fishers can negotiate compensation for direct impacts - without having to surrender their fishing licences and the approach is a win-win for all parties.” Mr Moore said Chevron had worked in a spirit of collaboration with fishing stakeholders, including the Department of Fisheries and the WA Fishing Industry Council, to negotiate the scheme. Young heart patient keeps fighting By Ben Leahy Junior Pilbara resident Steele Seramondi is continuing to battle health problems at the Perth Medical Hospital, even as his parents write to thank the community for their support. Steele is critically ill with a rare heart defect and last October the Pilbara Echo ran a story about a community fundraiser night to assist his family. The silent auction, ticket sales and alcohol on the night raised $5,800, which went toward helping the family pay for a SATS machine that monitors Steele’s heart rate and oxygen levels.

The Hedland RSL also generously contributed to the purchase of the SATS machine, while the Lions club helped fund resuscitation kits, which are equally vital for Steele’s rare heart disease. Despite the help, Steele’s health has sadly not improved. Steele and mum Trina are currently in Perth and may have to fly to Melbourne for specialist treatment, while father Karl remains in the Pilbara for work. Despite the family’s ongoing difficulties, they were keen to let the community know how much they appreciated everyone’s help.

The echidna

Echidnas, sometimes known as spiny ant eaters, belong to the family Tachyglossidae in the monotreme order of egg-laying mammals. The four extant species, together with the platypus, are the only surviving members of that order and are the only extant mammals that lay eggs. Although their diet consists largely of ants and termites, they are no more closely related to the true anteaters of the Americas than to any other placental mammal. They live in Australia and New Guinea and are named after a monster in ancient Greek mythology. Echidnas are small, solitary mammals covered with coarse hair and spines. Superficially, they resemble the anteaters of South America and other spiny mammals such as hedgehogs and porcupines. They have elongated and slender snouts , which function as both mouth and nose. Like the platypus, they are equipped with electro sensors. But while the platypus has 40,000 electroreceptors on its bill, the long-billed echidna has only 2,000, and the short-billed echidna, which lives in a drier environment, has no more than 400 located at the tip of its snout. They have very short, strong limbs with large claws, and are powerful diggers. Echidnas have tiny mouths and toothless jaws. Male echidnas have non-venomous spurs on the hind feet. The echidna feeds by tearing open soft logs,

anthills and the like, and by using its long, sticky tongue, which protrudes from its snout, to collect prey. The short-beaked echidna’s diet consists largely of ants and termites, while the larger species typically eats worms and insect larvae. Long-beaked echidnas have sharp, tiny spines on their tongues that help capture their prey. Echidnas and the platypus are the only egglaying mammals, known as monotremes. The female lays a single soft-shelled, leathery egg 22 days after mating and deposits it directly into her pouch. Hatching takes place after 10 days; the young echidna then sucks milk from the pores of the two milk patches (monotremes have no nipples) and remains in the pouch for 45 to 55 days, at which time it starts to develop spines. The mother digs a nursery burrow and deposits the young, returning every five days to suckle it until it is weaned at seven months.

Wendy’s owner Sharon Nicholson said Karratha residents have a love affair with ice cream. In the six-years she has owned her store, it has regularly been among the top 5 best selling Wendy’s outlets in the State. Ice cream is so popular at Wendy’s that the company has taken to making cakes out of it. Customers can visit Wendy’s.com.au to order their cake and then pop down to Wendy’s in Karratha to pick it up. Cakes can come in a range of flavours and be decorated to suit any occasion, whether it be in the colours of a favourite sporting team, as Cinderella for a birthday party or in more reserved style for formal dinners. Sharon’s indulgent side shines through when it comes to choosing her favourite cake – she likes the biggest one they make. “I like the tower ice cakes which have 17 balls of ice cream piled on top,” she said.

But Wendy’s is not all about ice cream. Hot dogs filled with everything from meatballs to bacon and eggs are another favourite at the store. One of the ways Wendy’s keep customers coming back is by refreshing their menu. All Wendy’s outlets run new promotions and discounts every six weeks. Wendy’s has also come out with a new range of non-dairy smoothies in flavours, such as Berry Blast and Watermelon Delight. Sharon said, “These smoothies are special because they have less calories than their dairy equivalents and are therefore much more healthy and heart-friendly choices”. Yet just like the rest of Wendy’s range they are tasty temptations that make for the perfect summer snack in between doing your shopping at Centro Karratha.

Karratha kids set to miss out on swimming lessons By Ben Leahy Rather than help cool off families this summer, a shortage of swimming lessons in the town has left a number of parents hot under the collar. While more than 550 children are enrolled in the Shire of Roebourne’s Term 1 swimming lessons this year, many more have also missed out. Some of the parents that missed out on a place told the Pilbara Echo they were disappointed because they said “swimming is an essential skill that should be taught to all kids living in regional areas”. They also complained about the way the sign up was conducted. All new parents were required to attend a sign up morning at the Frank Butler Community Centre on Monday February 4. The queue for the sign up stretched out the building and into the hot sun with some parents critical of the timing,

having also just dropped their children off for the first day of school. However, the Shire of Roebourne said that by holding the sign up on the first day of school, families, who had been away for the holidays, were also able to make it. The Shire intends to avoid future queues by introducing online enrolments once the new Karratha Leisureplex swimming pool opens later this year. A Shire spokesperson also acknowledged that “due to the difficulties in attracting specialised swimming teachers, the number of classes offered in some terms does not meet the demand for swimming lessons”. The spokesperson said the Shire regularly conducts Austswim swimming teacher courses, but that the last course in November attracted little interest from local parents. It hopes to recruit more teachers once it holds the next course in March.

Baynton’s new school balloons to life By Ben Leahy The Smith Family joined Karratha students at the first ever day of studies at new Baynton West Primary School last Monday February 4. With the entire school boasting brand new facilities, The Smith Family popped down to help make the students feel more at home in their new surrounds.

“One reason for the balloons is to help make the children more visible for traffic,” Ms Trevursa said. “It is a new school and a new area so some of the traffic might not be aware that it is the first day back at school today.” Ms Trevursa said fun activities like the balloons create a positive experience for the kids so they actually want to come back the next day. “When they’ve had a great day at school, the balloons just top it off,” Ms Trevursa said.

New Baynton West Primary School student Jasmine Brown was also full of praise for the school. “I had a great day at the first day of school,” Jasmine said. “My teachers and classmates are all fun.”

Angel of Cuisine Living in boytown has its advantages and disadvantages. It’s good when the door is being held open for you everywhere but bad when you want to get to the weights section at the gym. This week, it’s my Top 10 Tips for Man Food and Big Weekends. It’s hot and when we work hard, it’s easy to get off track and have a big weekend. It can equally be hard for guys, who are living in camp. So here are 10 easy tips to help you or someone you know set out on the right track for 2013. 1 Eat fresh food. Turn your packaged food into fresh food and eat the same amount you normally would, whenever you’re hungry. Just eat food as it comes in nature and eat as much as you want.

2 Email me at angelofcuisine@iinet.net.au and check out lots more recipes and inspirational ideas on my Facebook page

3 www.facebook.com/angelofcuisine

Start with a great breakfast that does not include toast or cereal. Cut the carbs, and you’ll notice a dramatic difference in how you feel. Eat what you want for breakfast, make it lean, fresh and real and wash it down with just one coffee and lots of water. Drink your water with a squeeze of lemon. It doesn’t taste as bad as you think, in fact, once you start doing this, it tastes better than regular. Just a squeeze of fresh

lemon on the top of your glass. There are so many benefits to this, but the biggest for men is that it will wake up and detox your liver each day and that’s what we need for big weekends.

4

5

Take supplements. If you seriously think you can go weekend after weekend and not do any damage to your body then think again. You have to at least be detoxing what you are adding even if you aren’t creating a deficit. So think about Greens Supplements and Fish Oil for overall everyday health.

metabolism. So think eggs, meat, tuna, spinach and protein, protein, protein. Don’t put it on bread and add carbs and you will feel so much better all day.

8

9

Drop the soft drinks and energy drinks and eat more food. Take a drink of water and a snack each time you would pick up one of these. You are much better off with water and nuts or fruit than a soft drink or energy drink. Get rid of them.

If you don’t control your food then control what food you eat. Take the skin off chicken and the fat off meat, its good for flavour but not for your health. So if you eat at the camp, choose what you want, and then choose of it what you eat. Treat yourself with things that aren’t food. Buy more of your favourite music or something for your hobby. Don’t reward or treat yourself with food or alcohol. Keep the treats for the weekend and be good through the week.

“How prone to doubt, how cautious are the wise! - Homer

6

7

50 grams of fat is a good guide for eating each day. Think carefully about where the fat is in your food. Cheese, yoghurt and nuts are high in fat, so should be consumed minimally, don’t exclude them, just small handfuls. Eat more protein. All those foods that boys love are great for the

10

Move a little. It doesn’t have to be strenuous, but if you are feeling cooped up or stuck inside and want to eat, eat, eat, it’s time to get out of there. Go for a drive, or a walk or a swim, do something, even if it’s not what you normally do. You never know, you might find something new.

Family buyers to drive a stronger property market

Published by: Pilbara Newspapers Pty Ltd

I think it is.

In support of this positive buying activity, the Property Management Section within our office is experiencing extremely low vacancy levels on our managed properties.

What does the future hold?

Shop 2 / 18 Hedland Place

Sorry, I don’t have a crystal ball.

Karratha WA 6714

The amount of sales activity we experienced throughout December and January and continuing into this month, along with genuine enquiries from qualified buyers, suggests that there is a new found confidence in the market.

Local: 08 9185 5570 National: 1300 655 720

By Kim Sparks The Karratha real estate market has certainly created new direction in the past six to 12 months.

Agency Bookings Hogan Media: 08 9381 3991

We have experienced an overall softening of rental amounts achieved, which has had a flow on effect into house values.

parada@hoganmedia.com.au

Is the tide turning?

Sale Representatives

In my opinion, the more affordable pricing structure, along with lower interest rates and, in some cases subsidised housing payment, is the catalyst for this renewed activity.

More pleasing is that there is a large percentage of enquiries coming from families either already in town or moving to town and looking to live in their own homes.

If the house is priced correctly, presents well and is handled by sales staff, who know their product and can give honest and accurate advice, then quite simply the house will sell or rent out.

The follow on effect to the town as a whole with this type of buying activity will see Karratha morph into a stronger community with additional neighbourhood values.

C’mon the Eagles. Kim Sparks, General Manager and Licensee at First National

Jen said players will need determination and a cool head to progress to the grand final match on the last Tuesday and take home the big money. Hedland’s sexiest night is back this weekend with the Water Polo Association’s annual Pimps and Pros ball set to pack out the Pier Hotel on February 9.

LARGE COVERED MOBILE STAGES

A sell out each year, the event became an instant hit right from its first incarnation 13-years ago thanks in large part to its outrageous costumes and friendly atmosphere. In fact, crazy costumes are so important to the event that you can’t even get in to the ball

Hedland Water Polo Association board member Steve Smirke said it’s the one night of the year that you can wear the craziest outfit you can find and still seem normal. “If you came to the ball and you weren’t done up in fancy dress, you would be the one looking like a goose,” Steve said. Steve was on the Water Polo Associations board when they came up with the idea for a Pimps and Pros ball more than a decade ago and said the event immediately attracted about 400 party-goers to its first event.

Soon there were 1,000 revellers at the annual bash. “Now it is probably the biggest annual event on Hedland’s calendar,” Steve said. The Water Polo Association holds the ball each year to fund their trip to play in the State’s regional water polo championships. With the championships often being held in southern Western Australia, Steve said the cost of travel for the team quickly skyrockets. Yet, in spite of Hedland’s isolation from the rest of the State and the fact the association’s home pool at the

South Hedland Aquatic Centre is closed for renovations, Steve said the team has a proud history. “Water polo is probably one of the earliest sporting associations in town, dating back to the 1970s,” Steve said. “Hedland has been successful in the country week [State regional championships] too.” “We’ve probably won it as many times as any other association in the State. But this weekend, the pool will be forgotten with the only water games played being those at the bar.

Vampires and prizes in aid of cancer research By Ben Leahy Hedland’s ladies are planning the ultimate girls night out this Friday February 15 to help raise money for the Cancer Council WA.

Kristy Godlee, the owner of clothing retailer Tarzan Loves Jane, and her team will be auctioning prizes and screening Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part at Hedland’s Matt Dann Cultural Centre. All proceeds from Kristy’s Cancer Council WA Relay For Life event will go toward cancer research and the support of cancer patients and their families. Kristy Godbee said her team’s inaugural Relay For Life event last year raised $6,000 and drew the biggest ever crowd to a movie screening at the Matt Dann Cultural Centre. “This time we want to top that and bring in even more people and raise $8,000,” Kristy said. To help raise the cash, Kristy said the Hedland business community had been extremely generous in donating an exciting prize pool. The prizes up for grabs in the silent auction include a Luke Paul GHD hair straightener, Desert Goddess beauty packages, membership passes to Wanangkurra Stadium, Lorna Jane packs and more. Doors open on the night at 6.30pm with a sausage sizzle and plenty of champagne and beer on hand, before the silent auction kicks off at 7pm.

Once silent auction bids have been submitted and a few drinks and lots of laughs been had by all, organisers will flick off the lights so the Hedland vampire fans can enjoy the screening of Twilight Breaking Dawn. Businesses to donate prizes to the night include: Desert Goddess Beauty, Zen Beauty Room, Wanangkura Stadium, Lorraine Lea Linen - Julie Coad, Hedland Nutrimetics, Simply Emielle, Hospitality Inn, Repco, Sheldon Petit Photography, Esplanade Hotel, Elljay Photography, Southbound Electrical, Pike Plumbing, Tan your Hide, Diapers, Divas & Dudes, Zumba Hedland, Courthouse Gallery, Luke Paul Salon, Toyota, Pirtek Hedland, My Delicious Indulgence, Honey Evans, NorthWest Photography, Off Ya Head, and Tarzan Loves Jane also provided exciting prize packs. Tickets cost $25 and are available from the Matt Dan Cultural Centre webpage.

Looper

Starring: Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt Director: Rian Johnson By Sean Smith, Karratha The year 2074 looks dangerous. I haven’t been there, but I have. In 2074, time travel has been invented. It is illegal to do it, however, the mafia have different plans for its use. If the bad guys in the future want to get rid of you, they’ll send you in the past to be taken out by a hit-man in the year 2044. Things get very strange when the person they send back is the hitman’s future self.

Joe (Bruce Willis) sets himself on a mission now that he finds himself in the past – a mission that will ultimately save the life of his future wife. The storyline takes a turn part way through the movie, and it focuses on a mother and her little boy. The little boy in the future is evil, his tantrums are a highlight of things to come. Old Joe is determined to erase him from the future. I thought my kids could throw monumental tantrums, but wait until you see this kid.

The concept of time travel in a movie storyline is nothing new, yet the idea behind Looper is fresh and innovative.

His melt-downs involve the unintentional movement of household furniture via telekinetics and a lot of yelling.

Catching up with your former self, only to be met by a younger you brandishing a gun and trying to kill your future self is different to say the least, and that’s why I liked this movie.

Enough to make you think twice before you ask him to eat his vegetables.

You have to pay attention and stay focused, otherwise you’ll quickly lose the storyline.

The theories of wormholes and quantum physics are there, so don’t be too surprised when your future self catches up with you and wants to take you out for a beer.

Different scenarios of the past and future come into play and Old

You never know, time travel might be possible in the future.

Double Taxation Rio Tinto looks to create takes the shine off 2000 jobs in the Pilbara superannuation By Vicky Validakis

By Dan Collins With Pilbara locals confidence in superannuation at an all time low, the proposed changes to superannuation announced by the Federal Government on February 4 threaten to erode any remaining confidence in the system. Under the current superannuation system, funds you and your employer contribute to superannuation are taxed when deposited into superannuation. Then as you retire, turn 60 and begin to withdraw those funds, there would generally be no more tax to pay. The changes proposed by our federal government would result in your funds being taxed as you and your employer contribute into super, then being taxed again as you pull the funds out of superannuation in retirement. This proposed double taxation of superannuation would be hugely unpopular and is yet another deterrent to people using superannuation as a means of providing for their retirement.

The latest changes come on top of last year’s announcement of tighter restrictions on contributions by tax payers aged 50 years and above.

Rio Tinto will expand its iron ore operations in the Pilbara with a $3 billion dollar investment set to create over 2000 jobs in the region.

While the proposed changes are not yet law, the mere fact it has been proposed can be unsettling for those contributing to their superannuation under the belief they will be able to access their superannuation in retirement without being taxed on it a second time.

Rio Tinto announced a massive $3.1 billion expansion to its Pilbara iron ore operations early last year with the majority of the investment used to extend the life of its Nammuldi iron ore mine, with the site receiving a $2 billion boost.

Given that the funds in your superannuation are generally locked away until retirement, it is understandable why people would be disgruntled at being told those funds are now going to be taxed a second time. The author is a local Accountant at Hedland Accounting & Finance in Plaza Arcade on Edgar St, Port Hedland. Dan is contactable on 9173 2060. The information provided is of a general nature and should not be considered to be advice. A further $1.1 billion will be used on early works to expand the company’s Cape Lambert port and rail facilities including the construction of a 130MW power station at the company’s Cape Lambert port and rail facilities. Premier and State Development Minister Colin Barnett said the Western Australia economy was set to benefit from the investment. “This major investment by Rio Tinto will create almost 1,500 construction jobs and secure ongoing employment for more than 700 people,” Barnett said. “The Nammuldi mine, 60km north-west of Tom Price, includes a major investment in mine infrastructure, which will see iron ore mined below the water table and increase the mine’s production limit from eight to 23 million tonnes a year.” “At Cape Lambert, Rio Tinto will build a state-of-the-art, fuel efficient 130MW power station to feed into Rio Tinto’s integrated power network. This additional power source will help meet the port’s power needs

as annual capacity grows from 85 million tonnes to 235 million tonnes by 2015,” he added. In announcing the expansion last year, Rio Tinto Australia chief executive Sam Walsh predicted iron ore demand from Asia was “forecast to grow strongly”. He said the investments at Cape Lambert and Nammuldi were a “significant milestone” in the company’s plans to increase its WA iron ore operations by 50 per cent.

“This major investment by Rio Tinto will create almost 1,500 construction jobs and secure ongoing employment for more than 700 people.” Rio said the Nammuldi expansion was expected to deliver first ore in the third quarter of 2014 and increase the mine’s life by 14 years. Iron ore prices have strengthened in the last four months, with analysts predicting the mining sector would benefit from a renewed investment. Source: Australian Mining www.miningaustralia.com.au

Port Hedland continues its strong iron ore exports with the Port Hedland Port Authority recording a 29 per cent increase in throughput for the first month of 2013, compared to the same time last year. A total throughput of 22.8 million tonnes was achieved for the month of January compared to 17.7 Mt in January 2012.

158.8Mt compared to the last financial year. Iron ore exports for the financial year-to-date have also increased by 13 per cent, with 153.7Mt recorded, compared to 136Mt for the last financial year. Imports to the PHPA have grown 25 per cent this financial year with a total of 1.15Mt, compared to 925,743 tonnes last financial year.

Eagles land in Hedland and Newman Karratha Taekwondo CLub Training will commence on Monday 11th February Juniors: 5.30 – 6.30 pm Seniors: 6.30 – 7.30 pm Karratha Senior High School Gym – Turner Way Bulgarra Instructors: John Maxfield & Lisa Ferguson Enquiries: 0438900420 after 4.30pm Kthataekwondo@hotmail.com

By Ben Leahy West Coast Eagles footballers Josh Kennedy and Dean Cox hit the Pilbara last Thursday February 7 to help Newman and Hedland students improve their sporting and study pursuits. West Coast ruckman Cox made his way to Newman Senior High School while key forward Josh Kennedy visited Hedland Senior High School as part of the Eagle’s Kicking Goals program. The duo conducted football clinics with the students before talking about the importance of sport and education. Kicking Goals is a program run in the Pilbara in conjunction with the Swan Districts Football Club and BHP Billiton and is one of Australia’s largest regional based AFL mentoring programs. It is a curriculum-based, incentive program whereby students must meet performance indicators to reap attractive rewards. Among the incentives for Kicking Goals students are 10 visits by Eagles players each year and the chance to play in a

curtain raiser game before a West Coast Eagles home match. The most sought after prize, however, is the Melbourne incentive trip, where three lucky Kicking Goals students are taken to watch some of the best AFL matches of the season live at the MCG and Docklands. Kicking Goals co-ordinators claim the

program has helped play a part in a 35 per cent decrease in criminal activity in the Pilbara as well as a marked reduction in anti-social behaviour at Newman and Hedland high schools. One of the biggest benefits to the community is the 200 hours of personal time each student spends in community volunteering.

Mike aiming to ride his bike all the way to Vegas By Ben Leahy South Hedland resident Mike Gilbert has inched closer to his goal of competing in the World Triathlon Championships in the United States after a strong performance in the State Titles last weekend. Mike battled sweltering conditions to come third in the Western Australian State Triathlon Championships for the 45-49-years age group. The race was run over the same distance as Olympic triathlons, which are made up of a 1,500 metre swim, 40 kilometre cycle and 10 kilometre run. Mike said he was happy just to get through the race following a demanding training schedule leading into the event. “I rode 1500km in the three weeks leading up to this race so I was by no means fresh while racing, hence I’m extremely happy with my result,” Mike said. “This was the first race this season, with [my goal being to] qualify for the World

Triathlon Championship 70.3 in Las Vegas [in the United States] in September.” The Las Vegas championship is run over a 1.9 kilometre swim course, 90 kilometre cycle and 21 kilometre run. Mike expects his blood, sweat and tears in the Pilbara to pay dividends at the event. “Obviously training in the Pilbara heat will be similar to that of the Nevada desert and should assist in a great result,” Mike said. But before he can get that result, Mike will have to earn his spot in the Vegas race by getting a podium finish in one of the qualifying races around the world. To secure that place he aims to compete in a number of races, including the Australian National Championships in Queensland, the Busselton half ironman, the Fiji International Triathlon, Hawaii half ironman, Italy half ironman and the Germany Ironman. It looks like he will be covering more miles than Australia Post this year.

Rankin cod have been thick in many areas, according to both anglers and divers lately. Rankin cod can take to baits and lures, including soft plastics, hard bodied lures and jigs. Rankin can be found in waters from around 10-120 metres deep. They are very good eating, and you can release them well in the shallow waters, but they often suffer barotrauma in deep water. If you are fishing in deep waters, make sure you have a release weight on board to aid in the release of these fish. Maggie Wright was shore fishing along the beaches at the north of the cape using a 30 pound line recently. Maggie forgot the bait, so she improvised and used a crab found washed up on the beach. That resulted in her catching a 7 kilogram Chinaman fish that was 72 centimetres long. What a great catch? Maggie has entered herself in the monthly fishing comp and could win $50 to spend in store. Bernie Pilkington was the winner from January. Bernie lives down south, but thinks coming in-store to use the voucher is a great excuse to come

back up for another holiday very soon. Ashley Barlow from Perth was in Exmouth recently with some mates from Perth. The crew headed out to the islands in a large boat and also had a tinny they used travelling down the west coast toward Perth. Ashley is an avid free-diver and managed to get a good selection of fresh fish during his stay, including green jobfish, coral trout, rankin cod and longtail tuna. The tuna are a very difficult fish to target on the spear. When trying to catch them with a boat, it can be like chasing rainbows, as they move quickly and tend to swim deep when you get near them. Ashley did a great job at spearing one of these fish. Long-tail tuna are a great tasting fish for sashimi. It is important to ensure you put the fish straight into a saltwater and ice

Wickham’s young tennis champ

slurry for optimal quality eating, especially in this summer heat.

Wickham’s Lawson Humphries has taken a step to becoming a new indigenous tennis star after winning the 10 and under State singles championship in Busselton in January. Nine-year old Lawson travelled down to Busselton between January 26-29 to compete in the tournament and quickly turned heads. He was in impressive form and remained undefeated throughout the four-day tournament. His achievement is remarkable because unlike his opponents, he does not have access to coaching or regular competition. Instead, Lawson and his father drive into Karratha on Monday evenings to play social tennis at the Karratha tennis courts where Lawson works on improving his game. Lawson’s ambition is to become Australia’s next indigenous tennis champion.

Ant Simper and his partner Tracey were in Exmouth this week. The couple regularly visit Exmouth and hope to call Exmouth home one day soon. Ant particularly loves his fishing and dropped in to Learmonth on the way in to town. The tide had just turned and was on the rise. He couldn’t believe the sea-life that was there.

Queenfish, trevally, cod, jacks, shovelnose sharks, bait, birds and all sorts greeted him. Ant caught and released so many queenfish that he lost count.

It was a great welcome back for him and Ant will be returning in March for Gamex.

Free Weekly 9-10 February 2013

A touch of success By Ben Leahy Karratha’s ladies and men Touch Footballers are set to take on Western Australia’s best in the State Touch Championships next weekend February 15 to 17. The Karratha team will compete in the mixed, open age category and are taking plenty of confidence into the tournament in Perth, having won the title last year. Touch player Kate Pratt said Karratha’s league is full of talent. “We are really lucky because we have got an amazing bunch of people living here at the moment, who have played touch at fairly high levels,” Kate said. Kate added that Karratha’s team had not only won the State’s mixed title last year, but also claimed the North West Championships trophy for the past 12-years. However, Karratha’s team could prove to be a victim of its own success this year, as more country teams, including Broome and Kalgoorlie, have followed their lead and entered the State titles.

“We are really lucky because we have got an amazing bunch of people living here at the moment, who have played touch at fairly high levels”

“There is a lot more teams in the competition this year, including a few more from the country,” Kate said. “Our success at the State Champs seems to have opened up the door for country teams.” “It could have definitely encouraged a lot more country teams to go hey we can do this too, which is really good’. The State Champs is expected to attract more than 3,500 competitors and 50 teams over the course of the three-day tournament, which begins with round robin games on Friday February 15 and winds up with the finals matches on Sunday February 17. Kate said that while the competition and fit and healthy lifestyle that comes with playing touch is a big plus, the star attraction is the social side of the game. “The biggest thing you gain in touch is the friendships,” Kate said. “Being in Karratha most people don’t have family, so when you are training hard in a team they become really close friends’.
