I took this picture of the cutest hatchling on my iPhone. I was out doing the morning turtle monitor for Care for Hedland when I was lucky enough to see three hatchlings emerge, there was a lot of seaweed and debris washed up on the high tide, which creates an obstacle for the hatchlings. But it made a fantastic photo with all the different shapes, colours and textures.

Karratha’s super medical clinic a step closer to reality By Ben Leahy Karratha residents could soon have better access to doctors and specialists with a proposal to build a GP Super Clinic on Sharpe Avenue set to go before council this week. The GP Super Clinic would likely provide services by general practitioners, visiting specialists, physiotherapists, dieticians, podiatrists, speech and occupational therapists, social workers and mental health counselors. The clinic would also focus on Aboriginal health services, including the treatment and prevention of chronic diseases.
concept design for the clinic, so we are progressing well in the development stage. Ms Halpin said a finished super clinic would provide better care by bringing a range of services under one roof. She gave the example of a diabetes patient, who could visit a GP and then be instantly referred to a dietician and other support services in the same building. In recommendations submitted to council, the Pilbara Health Network are also expected to takeover the GP Super Clinic on a peppercorn lease and then contract the clinic’s medical professionals.
If approved, the clinic will also partially stand on land that senior residents were controversially evicted from last year to make way for a multi-million dollar redevelopment of the town centre. Given this location on the main road of the showpiece new redevelopment, the report recommends that special care be given to the clinic’s architectural design.

Tourism WA wants your extraordinary holiday snaps By Ben Leahy Pilbara and Gascoyne residents have been showing their community pride in response to a recently launched WA State Government tourism campaign called 1001 Extraordinary Experiences. The campaign, fronted by former Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist, aims to help regional tourism operators by showcasing tourist highlights throughout the State. To do that, the campaign is calling for West Australians and visitors to submit photos of idyllic and extraordinary experiences they have had in WA. State Tourism Minister Kim Hames said people could submit their photos to a dedicated 1001 Extraordinary Experiences Facebook page and be in the running to win a luxurious holiday. “The best 1,001 entries will be featured on a new website, which potential visitors can use to research their travel options and access travel deals,” Dr Hames said. “Five WA holidays, each valued at $10,000, are being offered as prizes to give people added incentive to submit their extraordinary photos.” Campaign spokesperson Adam Gilchrist submitted the first photograph earlier this month of a sunrise over Eagle Bay in the State’s South-West. But locals have already shown plenty of interest in the competition through talkback radio and the Port Hedland, Roebourne and Ashburton councils all urging residents to get snapping everywhere from Pretty Pool and the Burrup Peninsula to Karijini. Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said areas, like the Pilbara and Gascoyne, would get great exposure from the campaign with the best 1001 photos to also be compiled into a short film targeting Western Australian, interstate and overseas visitors. “There are thousands of small tourism operators in regional WA and we are committed to helping them by funding campaigns like this that encourage higher visitor numbers, bolster local economies and make a valuable contribution towards building sustainable communities,” Mr Grylls said. Local tourism operators will now hope potential visitors get the picture.

More funding for regional tourism By Ben Leahy The Pilbara’s long suffering tourist industry is set to get a leg up with both sides of politics announcing major funding packages in the run up to the State Elections. In a debate held by Tourism Council WA on February 8, Tourism Minister Kim Hames announced that a re-elected liberal Government would provide an additional $24 million over four years to promote tourism. His counterpart, Shadow Tourism Minister Michelle Roberts, promised $16 million over three years from a new Labor Government. With
the

enduring high prices and accommodation shortages over the past decade due to the mining boom and flyin, fly-out workers, Tourism Council WA chief executive officer Evan Hall backed the funding. “There’s more to our economy than digging holes in the ground, and today’s announcements show that tourism has become a top priority for WA,” Mr Hall said. “Tourism, hospitality and international education creates over 108,000 jobs in WA, but regional tourism has been suffering over the last few years.” “Deputy Premier Hames has been a strong Tourism
Minister and his promised $24 million investment in tourism will revitalise the industry especially in regional areas” said Mr Hall. Tourism Minister Mr Hames said the Liberal Government would work with the tourism industry to decide how to invest the funding, but flagged support for camping and caravanning, and Indigenous and food andwine tourism. The Labor Party’s funding commitments were focused on regional and Indigenous tourism and attracting international students. Both parties also said they would consider additional funding to secure new airline services and major events.

If Exmouth residents have found themselves ducking their heads recently at the sound of gunfire, they can rest assured it is not the beginning of World War III. The Australian Defence Force has put out a public announcement that it is engaging in routine military training within the Exmouth peninsula and Learmonth Air Weapons Range between January 31 and March 29. Chevron makes offshore gas discovery
E: wchoice@westnet.com.au www.waterchoice.com.au
Looking for Instant Working Capital?
Chevron Australia has announced the discovery of a new off-shore natural gas well in the Exmouth Plateau area in the Carnarvon Basin. The discovery is Chevron Australia’s twentieth find off the West Australian coast since mid-2009, with the latest discovery located approximately 280 kilometres north of Exmouth. The Kentish Knock South-1 exploration well encountered approximately 75 metres of net gas pay in the upper Mungaroo Sands. It was drilled in 1,168 metres of water to a total depth of 3,065 metres. Chevron Corporation vice chairman George Kirkland said the discovery was an important find, yielding high quality natural gas. “The Asia Pacific region is key to Chevron’s growth strategy and our strong Australia natural gas portfolio continues to be bolstered by our strategic approach to finding and developing resources that will help meet the growing energy needs in the region,” Mr Kirkland said. The well is located in the WA-365-P permit area in which Chevron Australia and Shell Development Australia each hold a 50 per cent interest. Chevron Australia also leads the Gorgon and Wheatstone natural gas projects and operates Australia’s largest onshore oilfield on Barrow Island and the Thevenard Island oilfields.

$300 million promised for North West Health By Ben Leahy The Labor Party has stepped up its focus on Pilbara health care ahead of the State Election by reaffirming its commitment to fast tracking the delayed Karratha Health Campus. Opposition Leader Mark McGowan made the announcement as part of a $300 million commitment to deliver better hospitals and health services in Western Australia’s north. Mr McGowan said the funding package would be invested in hospitals in Newman, Roebourne, Wickham, Tom Price, Paraburdoo and the Exmouth Health Clinic and would also be used to train more doctors, nurses, Aboriginal health workers and other health professionals. “…It will also provide for a significant investment in the health workforce to ensure more services can be provided to people in regional areas, where they need it,” Mr McGowan said. Mr McGowan said $54 million would be spent to rebuild the Newman Hospital with increased bed capacity, while $36 million would be used to upgrade the Exmouth
Health Clinic and hospitals in Roebourne, Wickham, Tom Price and Paraburdoo. Labor also committed $10 million to building a 10-bed mental health facility in Port Hedland as well as $4.5 million for a Royal Flying Doctor’s airstrip in Tom Price. Mr McGowan also said $100 million of the $300 million commitment would go toward building the Karratha Health Campus sooner. However, Regional Development Minister Bredon Grylls criticised the commitment, telling the ABC that the project was being held up by engineering problems not a lack of funding. The Liberal Party earlier this month also announced an additional $20 million funding over four-years to support palliative care in the State. Minister for Health Kim Hames said the $5 million a year increase would result in the number of in-home palliative care days increasing from 181,500 to 241,500. But with palliative services lacking in the Pilbara and many patients forced to move to Perth for adequate care, Mr Hames’ statement did not specify how the funding would boost services in the region.

Polling more accessible for remote residents and workers By Tamara Binamat Voting registrations for the March 9 State Election have now closed and with candidates officially announced this week, campaigning is in full swing. With many of Western Australia’s eligible voters working on mine sites in the Pilbara region, there are major expansions regarding early voting opportunities and postal voting, which commences this Wednesday February 20. If you are in a remote location such as a mine site, pastoral station or Indigenous community and unable to vote on polling day, there are flexible options now available to you. There will be early voting stations at four locations in the Pilbara - the Karratha, Roebourne and South Hedland courthouses and the Shire of East Pilbara office. If early voting is not an option you can apply for a postal vote by downloading a form online. Deputy Electoral Commissioner Chris Avent said there will be early voting opportunities at Perth Airport terminals as well, including 4am starts at polling places. “Essentially, if someone can’t vote on the day, they can apply for a postal vote in which case the ballot papers would be posted to their nominated address,” said Mr Avent. “Let’s say a worker lives in Bunbury, but they will be working at a location in the Pilbara on Election Day, they can have their postal votes mailed to their address in Karratha, or if they have some time off they can nip into the courthouse or the Shire office and do an early vote. “Or they could early vote at the airport, so there’s a range of options available.” The WA Electoral Commission will also have mobile polling stations visiting remote locations in the North West region. In the Pilbara there will be visits to a range of Indigenous communities, mine sites and roadhouses.
Mobile polling teams will visit these places at different times, depending on the number of voters at that location. “Some places like Argyle Mine will actually be running a full polling place on Election Day from 8am until 6pm,” Mr Avent said. “And some of the larger Aboriginal communities will be running a polling place on Election Day, it depends on the community and number of people who reside there. “We’ve increased the number of Indigenous communities we visit, compared to in the past.” WA Electoral Commissioner Warwick Gately said voting is now available at Perth Airport’s three main terminals and three regional operators. Polling places will be open at both the domestic and the international terminals in Perth from Wednesday February 20 to Thursday March 7 from 4am to 7pm, and from 4am until 6pm on Friday March 8. On-site early voting is being increased from the four mines visited at the 2008 poll to seven this year. Between Saturday February 23 and Friday March 8 voting will be conducted at Argyle, Telfer, Cloudbreak, Christmas Creek, Murrin Murrin, Solomon Dally and Solomon Kangi. “We are doing as much as we can to improve access to voting services for the workers while not disrupting resource company operations,” Mr Gately said. “If you’re going on shift, take advantage of the airport voting that is available, and if you’re already away get online now and apply for a postal vote and we’ll get one out to you. “The plan is to encourage early voting either via post or at Perth Airport terminals as workers depart or return from their shifts.” Details of polling places on Election Day and early voting centres are available on the WA electoral Commission’s specific election website at www.elections.wa.gov. au.

Roebourne Art Group fights for its survival By Ben Leahy The Roebourne Art Group have been given a potential lifeline with the State Labor Party announcing it would fund a new gallery for the group if elected in March. Home to some of Australia’s most talented Indigenous painters, Roebourne Art Group artists have claimed prizes in the Cossack and Port Hedland art shows, exhibited abroad and been bestsellers at the Rio Tinto and Woodside sponsored exhibitions in Perth. Yet for the past 15 months, the group has been facing the prospect of closing its doors after being told they would need to vacate their current premises on Roe Street in Roebourne. Rex Widerstrom from the Roebourne Art Group said the Labor Party’s commitment to spend $1 million on a new gallery and workshop for the group if elected, had given renewed hope to the artists. “From our perspective, this is crucial – it is [needed for our] survival,” Mr Widerstrom said. Mr Widerstrom said the Roebourne Art Group was not only instrumental in transmitting local Aboriginal culture but also known as a place of healing in Roebourne. “It used to be called Big Hearted place,” Mr Widerstrom said. “It is somewhere where people can come and just paint and yarn about stories and history and family and leave a bit of that [worry of the] outside world behind.”
Yet outside worries have infiltrated the group lately with Mr Widerstrom saying they had unsuccessfully lobbied a number of party’s for help. “We have been trying for 15 months to get a meeting with Brendon Grylls,” Mr Widerstrom said. “We’ve sent three letters to him, saying we are going to be moved and if we can’t find somewhere else that it is possibly the end of Roebourne Art Group.” “[But we’ve had] no acknowledgement of those letters.” Mr Grylls’ office also declined to comment for this story. However, Labor’s Shadow Minister for Culture and the Arts John Hyde said the Roebourne Art Group played an important role in the Roebourne community. He said the gallery not only produced acclaimed artwork, but created employment and ensured the money its artists made stayed in the community. He added that a new gallery would allow the artists to work in air-conditioned studios rather than a dusty shed and provide them with more space to showcase their artworks. “A world class studio would be an attraction in Roebourne,” Mr Hyde said, while visiting the gallery on February 12 with Pilbara candidate Kelly Howlett. “I’ve been buying work from up here for over 10-years myself, and it is absolutely stunning work,” Mr Hyde said.

Students speak out to Government ahead of State Election By Tamara Binamat Political campaigns are now in full swing ahead of the State Election on March 8, 2013. Those aged over 18-years-old have the privilege of voting, and a chance to choose who runs our state. But what about those without a voice? What issues matter to our future voters? The Pilbara Echo’s Tamara Binamat asked senior students at Karratha Senior High School about the issues that matter to them. What would you like Government to focus on in our region? Declan Browne, 16-years-old A surplus for West Australian farmers, because it’s inevitable that eventually Australia’s natural resources will run out and we’ll need an industry to continue Australia’s growth.
Luc Fraley, 16-years-old Education matters to me because it’s the current students that will determine the future of Australia.
Kevin Trait, 17-years-old Infrastructure - streetlights and roads for example. Fixing roads up because it’s still quite dodgy around the area with lots of rain or cyclone damage.
Vicky Duff, 16-years-old Immigration issues are important to me because parliament people make out boat people to be such a bad thing. But [Government] don’t look at it with a wider perspective. [Asylum seekers] actually are seeking asylum and they need that safety. I think [Government] should look at it from their point of view.
Caitlin Stewart, 16-years-old
Dylan Ryan, 16-years-old
We need more facilities up north. [Government] need to look after the north a bit better than what it is at the moment. We don’t have a library and it’s a basic thing for a town to have.
There needs to be more [help for] small businesses to encourage a bigger market because a lot of the time it’s monopolies working to cooperate with other monopolies.
Rachel Gethin, 16-years-old I want a footpath from my house to the school because people are walking alongside the highway just to get to school. It’s going to be even worse when that leisure complex opens up and you get kids crossing the highway to get to it.

“I’m used to having gourmet products all the time. Up here I thought there was a real gap in the market for these products.”
“It would be great to have beautiful chocolates and beautiful jams around Karratha and I also want to include local products, so I’ve managed to find some natural honey for the hampers.”
Hampers will include treats such as dukkah, olive oil, coffee, chocolate, jams, chutneys and beverages such as lemonade and ginger beer.
Through Olivia’s professional career she has a lot of contacts in the South West produce industry. “I’ve been fortunate enough to live down south with beautiful produce on my doorstep,” she explained. “I’ve got a real passion for food products.
Olivia is offering hampers and individual products for sale and said her range will expand in line with local demand and include free delivery. Hampers are priced from $45 to $85 and can be customised. If you need a unique special gift, no need to look down south, Margaret River is in the Pilbara.

Surveying the path ahead Year of the snake By Ben Leahy Shire of Roebourne staff have spent the past two weeks spread out from Dampier to Point Samson, compiling the thoughts of the community as part of their annual survey. More than 600 respondents in Karratha Centro, Karratha Airport, Dampier Library, the Wickham shops, Roebourne Aquatic Centre and the Point Samson General Store completed the electronic survey during its first two weeks. But with the survey closing this Sunday February 17, Shire of Roebourne chief executive officer Chris Adams was urging more people to complete it and claim their reward of a free coffee or hamburger. Mr Adams said the survey helped the Shire gauge its performance over the prior 12-months. “Results from the survey influence council’s decision-making process and help to guide the future of our Shire,” Mr Adams said.
would now be filling in the missing links in the town’s footpath and cycleway network. “Having a complete network will provide a safe route for those who choose to walk or bike rather than drive to their destinations,” Mr Adams said. Among other interesting results, last year’s survey found that 41 per cent of respondents intended to leave the Shire within five years, down from 48 per cent in the 2011 survey. The survey also found that most fly-in, flyout workers had worked in the Shire less than two-years, but would be encouraged to become residents if there were improvements in affordable accommodation, health services and the range of cafes and restaurants. If that sounds like food for thought, residents can ensure they have their say this year by completing the survey in person or visiting http://www.roebourne.wa.gov.au/survey.
“It allows our community to tell us what services and facilities they think are most important and what should be prioritised.” In last year’s survey responses, a majority of respondents said they considered health services, the cost of living and entertainment options as the most important concerns to ensure a good quality of life. Respondents also identified libraries, footpaths, roads, childcare and community safety as important areas where the Shire needed to improve. Mr Adams said the Shire was listening and

By Ben Leahy While millions of people have been celebrating Chinese New Year in East Asia and even in Melbourne and Sydney, celebrations were a tad more reserved for Karratha resident Nicole Qian. With few Chinese people in town, Nicole had a more quiet meal of egg dumplings on February 10 than she would normally expect to have back in her hometown of Nanjing. Nicole said that each year in China up to four generations of her family gather to celebrate the New Year. “Our family relatives will come and stay together and have dinner and party until midnight when we play with fireworks,” Nicole said. “We make a really big meal with fish and dumplings and sometimes a hotpot.” “Normally the festival is in the winter season and it is quite cold so we have a hot pot.” And, in a ritual not too far removed from any Australian family get-together, Nicole added that after dinner her grandpa drinks wine with her dad and other relatives.
Nicole said she was lucky this year to be able to celebrate with her mum, who is out from China to help her manage the Muffin Break franchise she owns in Karratha’s Centro shopping centre. But as to whether this year of the water snake will bring her luck, Nicole said she will have to wait and see. “My year, is the year of the Ox, so I’m not quite sure what to expect this year,” Nicole said.

School attendance will be made a priority by adopting a whole-ofgovernment response to attendance problems confronting WA schools, WA Labor Leader Mark McGowan said earlier this month. Mr McGowan said a student is considered to regularly attend school if they attend for at least 90 per cent of the time. According to the Department of Education’s Annual reports, attendance rates among Aboriginal secondary students fell from 69 per cent in 2007-08 to 64 per cent in 2011-12. “Regular attendance is vital to a child’s success at school,” Mr McGowan said. “However, no one can get a quality education if they don’t go to school in the first place. “We want all Western Australian children to have the opportunity to go to school and get a quality education. “International and Australian academic studies show that truancy is one of the risk factors for a young person becoming involved in crime.

“Addressing truancy is one way of addressing youth crime. “Western Australia needs a strategic, whole-of-government response to attendance problems and a WA Labor Government will provide the leadership required to boost attendance rates.” Mr McGowan said WA Labor’s $13.45 million program included the provision of 40 trained attendance and behaviour officers, hiring of eight Attendance and Behaviour Managers and establishment of an Attendance and Behaviour Directorate to provide a whole-of-government response to truancy and behaviour in schools. “WA Labor’s plan focuses on placing trained professionals on the ground to help schools and principals deal with the challenges of truancy,” Mr McGowan said. “We will target 40 of Western Australia’s schools that face the greatest attendance and behavioural challenges.” A trained, on-site attendance officer, as well as Attendance and Behaviour Units will support schools in each of the State’s eight regional education offices.

Sudden storm sparks frenzy By Tamara Binamat The Karratha area experienced a freak storm on Tuesday evening when the sky opened suddenly around 7pm. Daniel Hayes from the Bureau of Meteorology in Port Hedland said wind gusts reached 115 kilometres per hour at 7pm, which is within the range of wind strengths for a category one cyclone. Mr Hayes also said the wind speed was equivalent to an intense Perth winter storm. Rainfall was recorded at 19 millimetres to 9am Wednesday morning. Dampier artist Jan Hassack said she experienced “one of the biggest storms I have ever been in”. “It raged for nearly an hour and resembled a mini cyclone,” Jan said. “Dust blew up and obliterated the ports, the trees were nearly bent over double, debris was flying everywhere and strewn all over the roads, the rain was horizontal and the most amazing light show lit up everything!” “I grabbed my camera, jumped into the car
and went up to the Dampier lookout where I was stunned and amazed at the ferocity and absolute power that was unleashed! “I then went out to Peninsular Palms to watch it over Parker Point.” Perthweatherlive.com shared some more amazing weather shots on the Pilbara Echo Facebook page after Onslow residents captured another freak dust storm.

CCV generates its profits from Australia (148 stores) and UK (222 stores). The ownership of stores is split between franchise and Company owned stores. The Company owned stores (45 in Aust., 61 in UK) help maintain network control,
encourage product development & rollouts and generate profit. CCV generates a strong return on capital. In our view, the returns are not a function of an unsophisticated client base, but arise from economies of scale, product innovation and a fundamental understanding of its customer’s needs. Hartleys views CCV as a BUY with a valuation of $1.41 and a 12 month price target of $1.32.

Round Three is worth $50 million and will provide grants of between $50,000 and $500,000 for projects located in towns with a population of 30,000 or less. Round Four will allocate $175 million through grants of between $500,000 and $15 million for priority regional infrastructure projects that also leverage funding from state and local governments and the private sector. The projects selected to proceed to the final stage of the application process will deliver real benefits to local communities. RDA Pilbara had to make some hard decisions and selected projects that meet clearly identified regional priorities. RDA Pilbara received high quality
Expressions of Interest for important projects and congratulates all proponents. “We received a number of high quality project proposals, and it was difficult to choose those that will proceed to the final stage of the application process,” Collene Longmore RDA Pilbara Chair said. “The projects chosen took into the account the priorities of our Regional Plan and address the needs of the region. “The projects are backed by a strong level of community support and are ready to proceed. “They will each have a positive long-term impact on our region and neighbouring regions.” Projects selected to proceed to full application in the Pilbara region are: Round Three: • Karratha Country Club - “Grassing the Greens”
• Shire of Roebourne - Civil Infrastructure Wellbeing Project • Shire of East Pilbara- Lions Park Redevelopment – Stage 1 • Western Desert Lands Aboriginal Corporation - Project to grass the oval at Nullagine/Irrungadji • FORM Contemporary Craft + Design Inc - Spinifex Hill Studios • Round Four: • St John Ambulance WA Inc - New Karratha Ambulance Sub Centre, Training Centre and Pilbara Community Paramedic Base • Shire of Roebourne - Upgrade of the Shire of Roebourne Effluent Reuse Scheme A list of projects selected to proceed to full application under both rounds is available at www.regional.gov.au. The closing dates for full applications are Wednesday March 27 for Round Three and Thursday April 11 for Round Four. The Department of Regional Australia, Local Government, Arts and Sport will assess all applications to ensure compliance with the Guidelines.
Eligible applications will then be assessed by an independent Advisory Panel and funded projects will be announced from June onwards. The RDAF is worth almost $1 billion over five years and is designed to boost economic and community development. It is part of the Australian Government’s commitment to regional Australia. The WA Government’s $10 million Social Enterprise Fund aims to stimulate greater interest within the community sector in setting up and running social enterprises. The SEF will help existing social enterprises to grow and expand or enable new social enterprises to be established. These social enterprises can be directly focused on achieving a social mission (for example job creation for long-term unemployed people) or they can be set up to create a new long-term revenue stream to help to make organisations become more sustainable. An information session on the SEF will take place between 10am to 2pm, with further advice surgeries between 3 and 5pm this Thursday February 21 at the Ibis Styles hotel in Karratha. The session will cover: • Understanding and running successful social enterprises - It will provide attendees with a solid understanding of what a social enterprise is, the different kinds of social enterprises, the process for establishing a social enterprise and help attendees make the decision as to whether this is the right option for their organisation. • How to apply for support and investment under SEF - The session will outline what support is available to social enterprises entering the
program, the eligibility criteria, what investment is available and the application process. One to one ‘advice surgeries’ will also take place, allowing attendees to test out their social enterprise idea with an expert and receive valuable feedback. These advice surgeries are strongly recommended for all organisations before they apply. The advice surgeries will be held following the information sessions. The SEF provides community sector not for profit organisations with a significant investment opportunity as well as the chance to benefit from significant support in shaping and developing their business ideas. This support is provided through a consortium managed by Social Ventures Australia that includes WACOSS, Social Traders and Centre of Social Impact. The consortium will help organisations through the application process as well as provide valuable business support and advice to those who receive funding. The first step in this support process is the opportunity to attend an Information Session and a one-toone advice session on February 21 in Karratha. Registration is free at www. socialventures.com.au/wa/form.php or call Social Ventures Australia on 08 6189 9000.

Local students to Dance around the World By Tamara Binamat Around 30 very excited local dance students are busy practicing and fundraising for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work in America. The Dance Around The World program offers Karratha’s Dance FX students the opportunity to perform in various locations around Los Angeles, including Disneyland, Universal Studios and
Hollywood Boulevard. The students will also participate in workshops and a street parade held at Disneyland. The Dance FX girls are required to perform a 30-minute routine at these venues, which they have been working on since December 2012. The students are aged from 8 to 21-years-old and will be joined by parents and siblings on the trip to America.
Dance FX depart Australia on April 10 for the 10-day tour. Nicole Roper is a student at Dance FX and said she is very excited to be participating in the American tour. “It is going to be such an amazing experience and we can’t wait to show the people of America how hard we have worked, as well as our parents and especially Jess,” said Nicole. “At the end of the day we want to
make our dance teacher proud. “We are all so excited and we are hoping that the community can support us on this amazing trip.” SIZZLING Dance teacher Jess Cocks said the SUMMER group is seeking sponsorship from local DEAL! businesses.

The best way to shed weight at the beginning of your new healthy lifestyle program is to detoxify the body naturally using food. It may not remove fat from your body but it will remove toxins, ensure that your organs are healthy and kick start your metabolism for all the fat burning goodness. Here are 10 great foods to help detoxify the body naturally. 1 Green vegetables: You can eat them raw, in juice or in a broth or soup and they are amazing for your system. The chlorophyll that makes them green helps remove environmental toxins from your body such as metals and pesticides and is generally great for the liver. 2 Lemons: Lemons kick-start the liver and keep fluid flowing through the body to wash it out. They contain high levels of vitamin C, which helps convert toxins into a water soluble form so they can leave the body. 3 Watercress: Use this in salads, soups or sandwiches. It has green leaves with a peppery taste, a diuretic affect on the body and is very rich in minerals. 4 Garlic: Goes with just about everything and has lots and lots of benefits. But for the purpose of detox it will activate liver enzymes to help filter the rubbish out of your system. 5 Green Tea: Full of antioxidants and
one of the best ways to get the fluids moving through your body. Be careful not to burn it or it will taste bitter, you don’t pour boiling water on your tea bag or leaves, you boil the kettle let the temperature drop a little and then steep your cup of tea. 6 Sprouts: Sprouts are the babies of the vegetable world. They are quick to grow, natural and don’t need pesticides. They pack almost double the punch of their grown up counterparts so grab some next time you shop and experiment with different ways to get them into your diet. 7 Sesame seeds: They protect liver cells from the effects of alcohol and other contaminates and they are yummy. 8 Cabbage: There are two types of enzymes that the liver uses to detox the body. Cabbage will activate both of them. Cabbage soup anyone? 9 Psyllium: A plant rich in soluble fiber, it mops up toxins and cholesterol as it moves through the body.

Investors beware of rental guarantees

I would like to take a moment to discuss rental guarantees.

Investors need to be very careful of these apparently simple

instruments as they can lull a buyer into a false sense of security. This can be in relation to both the purchase price of the property under consideration and the ongoing rental performance of the property once the guarantee period comes to an end. Now, I’m not against rent guarantees where the guarantee offered reflects the true current rent, and the guarantee is used

which the property grows in capital value will not keep pace with the buyer’s expectations. If you are attracted to a property offering a rent guarantee, firstly make sure that the offered weekly rent and promised percentage return are realistic in the existing rental market. Then make sure the promised weekly rental figure and the annual rate of return are written as a condition into the contract. Also, beware of disclaimers in small print at the bottom of marketing material. If an agent has made you a promise either verbally or in writing, on a brochure then make sure that the promise is provided as a written condition of your contract. If at all in doubt, don’t sign anything until your settlement agent or solicitor has reviewed the contract on your behalf.
appropriately to give the buyer confidence and to make the finance approval process easier. It is unfortunate, however, that sometimes these rental guarantees don’t reflect the true current rental available for the property. There are instances whereby the offered guarantee has been quite heavily subsidised. The risk here is that the buyer pays an inflated price for the property based on a rental yield that is not really currently available. Most residential property investors are looking for positive returns and a reasonable expectation that their investment will grow in value as the rental return increases. If, at the start of the investment process, the value of the property is inflated by an optimistic and unrealistic rental guarantee, then the rate at

And don’t forget to tell the settlement agent or solicitor about any promises or verbal representations that have been made to you so that they can be sure that the contract reflects those promises. If the agent won’t confirm as a condition of the contract any representation he has made to you, then my advice is to walk away from the deal. There are many quality developers operating here in the Pilbara and many quality local agents selling their product and using genuine rental guarantees to assist buyers through the selling process. Seek out quality local developers and agents and leave the cowboys in the Old West – there is no room for them here in the new North West. George Cook, Karratha City Real Estate

Investment Opportunity This is a rare opportunity to secure an investment or your own corporate/ operational facility in the Karratha Light Industrial Area.
❚ Currently leased for 2 years
Low Maintenance This three bedroom home just fiveyears-old is located in Onslow in a quiet location. It has been strongly constructed in site and has all the modern conveniences you would expect. It is currently leased for two years to a corporate tenant with future prospects of higher returns to the investor. Chevron’s 26 billion dollar Wheatstone LNG Project has seen the town attract astute
investors with the huge upside that a project of this nature provides. The home has a low maintenance profile and an easy care block within walking distance of all amenities and services. This investment will continue to deliver positive cash flow for many years to come. Well worth inspection at $1,150,000.00 with the potential to create a further flat and a two year lease at $2,000 per week.

This is an excellent property that has been well designed and well laid out. The facilities are modern with the majority of the laydown in concrete, with the balance in compacted road base. It has a separate modern office with reception, two offices, modern lunchroom and excellent amenities. Operationally it is extremely practical and commercially very professional. Properties like this are difficult to find with services companies seeking to lease or expand constantly, placing great pressure on the market. This is a quality commercial and operational complex that will suit a variety of commercial applications. As an investment it will lease readily and as
a commercial operation it would have great appeal. Commercial features include an office reception of approximately 140 m2, a huge 500 m2 workshop, three bay roller doors, a mezzanine of approximately 80 m2, building total area approximately 640 m2, visitor parking and a total land area of 2100 m2.

masters pull the ladies
By Tamara Binamat After-work drinks in the Pilbara normally feature nightspots dominated by men, but the Pilbara’s newest ladies night is pulling more women than seen anywhere else.
Karratha’s only small bar, Blanche Bar, is drawing upon the experience of their accomplished cocktail makers to pull what they say is a 70 per cent women, 30 per cent men patronage. To encourage a place females feel comfortable among others, Owner Bart Parsons is starting a dedicated Ladies Night, with halfprice cocktails from 8-9pm on

and a lot of guys who’ve won cocktail awards in Australia. “They’re what a lot of people term mixologists. “Glenn, [Blanche bartender] has worked in Spain, France, Scotland and all around the world [as a cocktail mixologist]. “And a lot of our cocktails are directed at the ladies.”
I couldn’t help but feel as though Toni Collete was playing a character from the popular US television series, The United States of Tara.
I nearly turned it off about a quarter of the way through the movie to go for a lie down.
In fact, all the characters she plays in The United States of Tara are more believable than her character in Mental.
The Moochmores are a family of seven - Mum, Dad and five girls.
Her role as “Shaz,” in Mental is a little contrived.
Dad (Anthony Lapaglia) is the womanising Mayor of a small town, Mum (Rebecca Gibney) is on the brink of a nervous break down thanks to her chaotic family life and her husband’s constant absence and cheating ways.
Shaz’s estranged husband, played by Liev Shreiber, puts on one of the best Aussie accents I’ve heard in a movie.
Mum goes on a “holiday” to Wollongong, NSW. In reality she has been checked in to the psychiatric centre. Dad has no clue who his daughters are, he is never at home and when he is, he is distant so there’s not much love emanating from Dad. He picks up a hitch-hiker called Shaz (Toni Collette), and she instantly becomes the nanny to his five daughters, so he can concentrate on his re-election campaign and office philandering.
In a movie with mainly a whole cast of Australian actors, Live Schreiber’s character is probably the most believable and he’s an American actor playing the part of Aussie bloke. PJ Hogan hit the mark in a big way with his smash hit movie Muriel’s Wedding, but he misses the mark with Mental. It was a good try, but he receives no cigar from me. Mental was ninety per cent mental and ten per cent funny. If you feel like watching a completely unrelaxing movie on the weekend that will nearly drive you nuts, hire Mental.

Underground Electro DJ returns to Pilbara ready to party By Tamara Binamat DJ Saccas is set to unveil new original tracks and underground music at his performance in Karratha this Saturday night. Saccas is an accomplished DJ, starting out seven years ago after a friend introduced him to vinyl.
Saccas said clubbers can expect “Electro and house club music and whatever else goes”. No stranger to the Pilbara, DJ Saccas said he loves our crowd. “The people there just love to party!” he said.
Fast forward to 2013 and Saccas has enjoyed career highlights such as playing international gigs in Singapore and Indonesia alongside Dan Castro, Danny T, Emily Scott and Mind Electric.
“The crowd’s so responsive and there to party and everyone’s having a good time.”
“You meet so many people along the way and you get to travel around a lot so [DJing is] awesome, it’s a good social life,” laughs Saccas.
“I’ve been producing for just over a year and I have more and more tracks out there,” he said.
“I play heaps of gigs all over the place but I really enjoy getting back to Karratha.
DJ Saccas
Saccas has performed for the likes of The Getaway Plan, Little Birdy, The Potbelleez, Kid Kenobi and MC Shurshock.
“I’ll be offering some underground electro that people don’t really get in Karratha, but people can still relate to it”. “I want to give everyone a fresh new vibe.”
Not only does Saccas cover the big dance tracks, he’s made a success of his own original productions.
“My first track was Ambulance, a funky electro track and I’ve got a heap of other tracks I’m working on at the moment.” You can expect to hear a few Saccas originals thrown in this Saturday night, February 16 at Evolution Lounge Bar. Doors open 10pm with free entry until 11pm at Evolution Lounge Bar, Warambie road, Karratha.

Biodiesel fuel helping drive Indigenous engagement One of Western Australia’s largest mining services companies, ESS Support Services Worldwide, will recycle 100 per cent of its used cooking oil into biodiesel fuel through a landmark deal with Ashburton Aboriginal Corporation. ESS is the first catering company to enter into such an agreement with AAC which will see the two organisations move towards a sustainable future, as well as provide economic engagement for the Pilbara’s Indigenous community. The agreement will see in excess of 200,000 litres of used cooking oil recycled by AAC’s subsidiary AshOil into biodiesel fuel every year. A global mining company working in
the Pilbara uses the biodiesel for drilling and blasting operations at its mine. ESS Executive Director Paul Nugent said the agreement with AshOil was an example of ESS leading its industry in environmental initiatives and Indigenous engagement. “ESS has been working with AshOil since early 2010, but giving the company exclusive access to 100 per cent of our used cooking oil for recycling shows ESS is committed to practical strategies that deliver tangible environmental benefits,” Mr Nugent said. “The partnership also means ESS will increase its support of the Indigenous communities it operates in.

Timely advice on cyclone cover Every time there’s a cyclone warning, the phones ring hot at EBM Insurance Brokers’ Karratha office – but, by then, it’s too late to insure against the coming threat. EBM Insurance Brokers assistant account manager, Suzanne Kimpton said that homeowners, renters and businesses need to get organised early and assess their insurance before a big one is on its way. And with the Bureau of Meteorology reporting an average of five cyclones per season, there is no time to waste. “Whenever there’s a cyclone threat, we get a spike in calls from home owners, who suddenly realise that they are either under-insured or not insured at all,” Karratha resident Mrs Kimpton said. “However, you can’t take out a new policy to insure against a cyclone that’s already been named, and some policies will not cover loss for storms, cyclones or floods that occur within 72 hours of taking out the cover. “We want people to think about their insurance before the threat is on the doorstep.” Mrs Kimpton said another issue was contents insurance in the Pilbara. Many people arrive in the region for work with few possessions. But as they accumulate belongings, they forget to re-evaluate their sum insured to include items such as clothing, shoes, cutlery, crockery, liquor, toys, linen, outdoor furniture, garden equipment and tools.
Other people under-estimate rebuilding costs. “If you insure your building for $300,000 when the actual cost would be $600,000, then you risk the insurers only paying out half of any claim – even one that’s just a few thousand – as the insurer considers you to be ‘coinsured’,” Ms Kimpton said. Mrs Kimpton recommended reassessing the level and adequacy of cover annually, adding that renters should have content insurance as their landlord’s building insurance does not cover them. EBM Insurance Brokers has access to many insurers willing to cover properties and possessions in the Pilbara. “Clients often come to us so frustrated after ringing around insurers who don’t offer cover above the 26th parallel,” Ms Kimpton said. We know who offers cover for this area and are able to negotiate with insurers to ensure we can get the best possible deal,” she said.
Insurance tips • Reassess your level of cover every year. • Make sure your building insurance is adequate to cover the real cost of rebuilding, not just the market value. • Don’t forget to include the cost of replacing ordinary

household items, such as clothing, crockery and linen when deciding how much to insure contents for. When compiling a list of contents, many people also forget to look up and down for items like rugs and pictures on the walls. A video or photographs of each room in the house, including items like jewellery can assist greatly when it come to remembering what you actually had and substantiating a loss. Keep an up-to-date list of major possessions, along with serial numbers. Keep receipts for expensive valuables such as jewellery items and consider having these items specified on the policy. Don’t automatically stick with the same insurer – some charge markedly more than others. Compare policies on the level of cover and any excesses applicable, not just cost. If a cyclone is pending, put all important documents, including insurance papers, in a water tight container.

Rugby league looking to grow in the Pilbara By Ben Leahy WA’s mineral wealth appears to be attracting more than just mining barons and fly-in, fly-out workers, with the National Rugby League the latest to eye off the Pilbara region. It seems the NRL has taken notice of the scores of Eastern Seaboarders, Kiwis, Brits and South Africans already playing rugby league in the Pilbara and decided to appoint its first full-time development officer to the region.
New development officer Chris Newman said his mission will be to increase awareness of the game and grow participation numbers among seniors and juniors and volunteers. “At the moment, we have three junior clubs and six senior clubs in the Pilbara,” Chris said. “But the NRL has really seen numbers grow in the game out here, so that is why I am here looking to boost that awareness further and get more people playing.” Chris said he is aiming to get a school
rugby league competition going as well as building a pathway for talented juniors to make it to the professional game.
From there, players would be a chance to sign on a professional contract with an NRL team.
“What we are putting in place in the Pilbara is an under 14s and 16s high performance academy – that will be implemented this year,” Chris said.
However, Chris said his work is more than just about the game on the field.
The academy will then be able to feed local players to the West Coast Pirates Under 18s team, which competes in the national SG Ball Competition, known as the best junior rugby league competition in the world.
Having spent the past 12 months as a NRL development officer in Samoa, Chris said he was also focused on educating players off the field. “The education and welfare programs that we want to run in the community are definitely one of the most important factors in my job,” Chris said.

Tackle World Exmouth Fishing Report By Jenni Gates How hot has it been this last week? The summer heat has really hit hard this year, which can make it challenging for the shore-based angler and others on the water. The waters in the gulf seem to be so hot that the fish would fry in the shallows, yet there have been fish caught along the coastline, including whiting, queenfish, garfish and squid. The social committee from the Exmouth Game Fishing Club is holding a Garfish and Rock lobster competition Saturday February 16. All juniors are free to enter. In fact, all juniors will get a prize! The comp is designed to be a fun day of fishing, followed by more fun and games at the clubhouse that night with presentations. Anyone is welcome to enter, so for further details drop down to the clubhouse, which is open Thursday to Sunday for lunch and dinner.
There were no other boats in sight to share the moment, however, wonderful memories like this last forever, especially for children. James and his father Brad fulfilled the day catching bluebone, red throat emperor and a variety of other species. James’ mother Joe and brother Ryan were also pleased when fresh fish was brought home for dinner. Gamefishing anglers are gearing up for Gamex, with new lures being tested, different hook rigs tried and teasers rigged. Those anglers targeting species are practicing knot tying, measuring leader lengths carefully and getting out to find where the various species are mooching. There have been big queenfish in the gulf, wahoo south of Tantabiddi and rather large spangled emperor around the islands, with reports also of them actually in the marina (a great option if the wind is too strong?).
Junior angler James Bell was out fishing with his father off Tantabiddi in their dinghy this week when a whaleshark came up and greeted them at the stern.
There are several new pushers with various coloured skirts that the billfishing anglers have been using and not only are they working on sails and marlin, but the large yellowfin tuna are still about, along with the ever-present mahi-mahi.
The father and son were very impressed to have the beautiful creature so close and all to themselves on the ocean.
Gamex has been running for over 40 years and the buzz for this event seems to get bigger each year.

Pilbara’s Ultimate Frisbee troupe By Courtney Zohs Karratha Ultimate is a group of people who have come together to play the sport of Ultimate, previously known as Ultimate Frisbee. The group started playing in Karratha in July 2012 and although some of us had played before, most of us had not. People brought friends along and with word of mouth and social media, we found ourselves having enough players to have two regular games a week among ourselves. Ultimate Frisbee was created in America in 1967 as a free-spirited alternative to traditional organised sport. Ultimate is a non-contact, mixed gender sport, suitable for all ages. It is played outside or indoors with teams of seven a side for outside and five a side indoors. The game is played on a rectangle shaped field the size of a rugby pitch with an end zone at each end. The idea of the sport is to have your team catch the disc in the end zone. You do this by passing the disc among your team without dropping it, or running with it. You can only hold onto the disc for 10 seconds and of course you have the opposing team trying to stop you, generally doing so by playing one-on-one or working as a zone defence. Once you catch the disc in the end zone a point is scored and you start play again. Ultimate is a self-refereed sport that is more about the spirit of the game rather than the competitive, aggressive feel that a lot of sports have. Respecting your team mates and the opposition on the pitch is highly regarded and when teams play in tournaments they

nominations for all positions will be called for.
The Karratha Netball Association committee had its first meeting for the year recently and important dates have been set for the coming year.
We have many issues to vote on this year, including game night when we move to the new centre and junior rules so come along and have your say.
The first date of significance is Senior Open trials to be held at the Bulgarra Netball Courts at 6:30pm on February 25.
All team nominations will be taken on the night between 6:40 and 6:55pm.
If you are new to town and interested in playing netball or are an existing player but wish to try for a higher division or a new club, we would love to see you there. are scored on a spirit level as well as if they win or lose a game. If a foul is called, it is between the two players affected to sort it out and move on with the game as quickly as possible. It is discouraged to enter into any aggressive play or arguments. Generally players on the pitch spend most of the game laughing and enjoying a good run around and a throw of the disc. The Karratha team have become passionate about the game and are hoping to enter into a tournament during the year to develop their skills and experience. New players are always welcomed and encouraged. We are currently playing on Sundays at 7pm at the Pegs Creek oval. On Thursdays, we play indoors at 7:30pm at St Luke’s College. Both cost a small amount to cover the hire of venues and anyone is welcome to come along. Ideally, we would like to get a competition happening with enough players to have set teams each week playing against each other. If you are interested in playing or would like any more information you can contact us by email on karrratha@waultimate.com or on Karratha Ultimate’s Facebook page or just come down and join in!
Please bring sport shoes, a drink and towel. Expressions of interest forms can be found on the Resources and Forms page of the KNA website at karrathanetball. asn.au and must be submitted by February 22. A sign up day for NetSetGO and Juniors is set for 4pm on Tuesday March 5 at the Bulgarra Netball Courts. All children from 5 to 17-yearsold who want to participate in NetSetGO or in our junior competition but don’t already have a team are welcome to come down. KNA will try our best to make sure every child wishing to play this great sport finds a team to play in. The KNA Annual General Meeting will be held at 7pm on March 19 at a venue to be determined. Check the KNA website or join our Facebook page for up to date information.
If you do not hand in your team nomination form and the $50 nomination fee, your team won’t be included on the fixtures. This goes for juniors and seniors. Each and every team in every division must have two attendees at the AGM for there to be a quorum. If there is no quorum, there will be no AGM and no netball season. If your team wishes to train at the Bulgarra Netball Courts, you must include this information on your team nomination form also. With an expected 30 senior teams alone, court space for training is tight so get in early. Completed player affiliation forms and fees will be taken at the Del Parker Netball Centre, Bulgarra Netball Courts match office between 6:30pm and 7:15pm on April 2. Only financial players will be able to play on the first game on April 8 (seniors) and April 9 (juniors). The committee is trialling a twoweek round of grading for seniors this year.
All members new and old, parents, coaches, umpires, supporters and volunteers are welcome to attend.
Fixtures will only be sent out for the first two senior rounds at the start of the season and if need be, some teams may change divisions for the games coming after school holidays on May 6.
All positions on the KNA Committee will be vacated and
