The State election is next Saturday and I ask you to consider a few local issues before deciding how to cast your vote.

The first thing you need to know about me is that three generations of my family live here in the Pilbara, and we’re here for the long haul. I fully understand the challenges and the opportunities facing all of us that call the Pilbara home.

I’ve run a successful business in Karratha for over 15 years. Being a retail shop owner I meet and talk with a wide cross-section of Pilbara people every day. I know when they’re feeling buoyant, I know when things are tough, and I know what their concerns are. I don’t need polls to tell me what’s going on in our community.

Here’s a snapshot of real Pilbara issues and the kind of level-headed, locally focused solutions you can expect from me.

Healthcare I have previously stated my concerns about the proposed location of the new Karratha Hospital but I’m pleased that the Premier has committed to reviewing the location to ensure that it is located at the best possible site. The Premier has said “if this government is re-elected we would look at which is the best location.”

It is important that the views of locals are taken into account during decision making for our community and I will continue to fight to make sure that Pilbara residents have their concerns heard.

It is my advocacy on this and other health issues which show why it is so important to have a local voice at the decision-making table. If I am elected, that is exactly what we will have.

Housing Housing is not 'normal' in the Pilbara; an historic undersupply has meant a lack of affordable, decent value options. To restore some balance, the Liberal-led Government has recently released 500 new home sites in Karratha with a further 2500 on the way; Hedland too has a planned release of 3,000 new home sites.

This has meant that finally we’re seeing rents under the $1,000 threshold. In the short term this may affect some real estate values, but a soft readjustment now will be more sustainable for our community in the long-run. For investors this is a much better option than boom-bust cycles we’ve seen previously.

Roads

Roads are expensive, but roads in the Pilbara are doubly expensive, and that’s why they get put on the backburner, until recently when the Liberal led Government committed to a $140 million upgrade of the Great Northern Highway into Port Hedland.

Additionally, in partnership with the Federal Government we have all but completed the $110 million duplication of Dampier Highway, making this vital road safer for all users. The Newman - Marble Bar Road will get a $20 million upgrade and $8 million is committed to complete the Wallwork Bridge in Hedland. Modern and safe roads are critical for our community right now, as well as being a cornerstone for a prosperous future. If elected I will ensure these projects are completed and continue improving our road system to ensure we stay ahead of our growing population.

Education Education is a fundamental building block to society. That’s why the Liberal-led government invested $23 million building the new Baynton West Primary School, and $100 million building Karratha SHS. Additionally it has put up $50 million for the Pilbara Education Partnership Fund.

Growth in the tertiary education sector is critical to attracting and retaining people in our region and supporting a diversified local economy, that’s why $675,000 has been allocated for UWA to do a feasibility study of a brand new, world-class facility for research and executive education programs in Karratha and Port Hedland. Our kids shouldn’t have to leave the Pilbara to get a first-class education, and that’s why I’m right behind these important initiatives.

Beyond mining The Pilbara has many opportunities to deepen our economy beyond mining. Aurora Algae is a great example; they spent $50 million proving their bio-fuel technology in Karratha, and have now committed to $86 million going to full production. We need to support more enterprises that use local resources. To that end, tourism and agriculture are just two industries that show great promise and deserve more support.

Royalties for Regions The Liberal-led Government’s R4R legislation has done a good job, and we can see the benefits already. But the Pilbara needs a committed local on the team to ensure the money is spent in a way that best suits local needs, not those dreamt up by city-based politicians.

Law and order The Pilbara is unlike anywhere else. Our social diversity puts police and law enforcement officers under a range of complex pressures. But we do know that tougher penalties work as a deterrent, and the Government’s strict approach is working. Things like new the anti-hoon laws will help to reduce crime in the Pilbara, so now is not the time to change direction.

We want to continue to be tough on crime with additional police, new mandatory jail terms for offenders who commit serious assault during a burglary, improved video link technology at regional police stations and other measures designed to reduce red tape and enable police to spend more time on the front-line.

Having a smaller population means the impact of social disarray affects everyone, so we need to do everything possible to ensure we have safe and harmonious communities.

The Pilbara’s future My business, my kids and my grandkids are all here in the Pilbara. This is a special place that has been good to me, and I feel privileged to live here. I firmly believe that we need a committed local who will speak for the Pilbara in Parliament, and make practical decisions that will benefit the region now and in the long term.

On election day, I ask you to think about the Pilbara’s future and your place in determining that.

Life Flight jet conveyed to Onslow after stolen vehicle crashes during cyclone threat

By Tamara Binamat During a week of uncertainty surrounding Severe Tropical Cyclone Rusty’s movements, the Royal Flying Doctor Service dispatched the Rio Tinto Life Flight Jet to Onslow to collect three injured men from two separate accidents.

Coastal communities including Onslow were on high alert due to a Category 3 cyclone at the time.

A police spokesperson from Onslow Police said about 8pm Sunday February

24 a Toyota utility was stolen from an address in Cameron Avenue, Onslow by a 31-yearold worker, not a resident of Onslow.

About 10 minutes after the theft, the vehicle crashed on Onslow Road into an area of roadworks.

The single occupant of the vehicle sustained several injuries.

The man was flown by the Rio Tinto Life Flight to Perth for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

Police said an inquiry is

ongoing and it is not clear whether speed or alcohol was a factor in this crash.

A separate motor vehicle accident occurred on the same day at Lyndon near Carnarvon.

Two persons involved in a vehicle rollover were conveyed to Nanutarra Roadhouse and then Onslow Hospital before they were flown to Perth for treatment.

A passer-by heading north on the North West Coastal Highway stopped to render assistance before transporting the patients to Nanutarra Roadhouse.

The two injured males, aged 17 and 29-years-old, were transferred to Perth for medical treatment.

The rescues occurred five days after Rio Tinto announced a commitment to fund the Rio Tinto Life Flight jet service for Western Australia for the next four years.

Royal Flying Doctor Service Chief Executive Officer Grahame Marshall said the Rio Tinto Life Flight jet can reach patients in need anywhere in the state within three hours and had become a vital service for West Australians.

“The Rio Tinto Life Flight jet has made a tremendous difference to our ability to respond to the needs of rural, regional and remote

Western Australia and today’s announcement of continued support from Rio Tinto is another huge step forward for aero medical services in Australia,” he said.

The new funding agreement brings the support provided by Rio Tinto to $11 million.

The jet has been particularly beneficial for residents of the North West, with 54 per cent of its patients coming from the Kimberley region and 20 per cent of patients coming from the Pilbara.

The new agreement was enabled by a further $6 million, four-year funding commitment from Rio Tinto, whose Western Australian mining operations are centred in the Pilbara and Kimberley regions.

Rio Tinto President of Pilbara Operations, Greg Lilleyman, said Rio Tinto was proud to continue to be associated with such a vital service in remote medical care.

“As a business we operate in remote locations so we understand the significant challenges faced by people living and working in regional WA,” he said.

“For many of them, speedy access to the best medical care is literally a matter of life or death.”

Severe TC Rusty lashes Pilbara coast

By Tamara Binamat The Pilbara region is recovering from the impact of ex-Severe Tropical Cyclone Rusty, which crossed the coast as a category 3 system on Wednesday between 5-6pm 110 kilometres east northeast of Port Hedland and 130 kilometres north of Marble Bar. The whole Pilbara region braced for what was predicted to be the worst cyclone of the current season.

Port Hedland hit red alert at 10am Wednesday morning as the cyclone approached as a category 3 system.

Daniel Hayes from the Bureau of Metrology in Port Hedland said Pardoo was the

town most drenched during exSevere TC Rusty receiving 450 millimetres of rain over two days.

Telfer also received a bucketload, recording 278 millimetres for the event to date.

Ex-Severe TC Rusty reached an intensity of category 4 from 5am Wednesday morning to about 2pm that same day.

After crossing the coast exSevere TC Rusty then tracked south east, heading east of Marble Bar and Nullagine and ultimately east of Newman.

Around noon on Thursday ex-TC Rusty fizzled out and the whole Pilbara received the all clear from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

Les Hayter, public information officer for the Department of Fire and Emergency Services said DFES received few callouts for help.

“There was a couple of calls but they were mainly for trees across roads and there was one storm drain that was blocked in Wedgefield,” he said.

“And there was the damage to the station at Pardoo.

“The carport lost its roof and there was water damage to an outer building.”

Mr Hayter said there were no callouts for help to DFES from the Karratha region.

During the threat of the cyclone, DFES evacuated multiple communities who were in danger.

The Warralong Community was evacuated to Marble Bar utilising two 4WD buses and a troupe carrier.

“We had pre-planned evacuating those locations where there were issues, like Pretty Pool and the western end of Port Hedland where we had the storm surge possibility,” Mr Hayter said.

“We also had the two rivers, the Turner and Yule at the west of Port Hedland where we had the Yandeyarra Community.”

Marble Bar was also evacuated to two evacuation centres.

The Port Hedland Evacuation Centre held 270 people while 70 people flocked to the South Hedland Evacuation Centre.

By Tamara Binamat In what Kellie Lauren describes as “a mother’s worst nightmare”, a freak chain of events and natural disasters almost stood in the way of medical treatment for her son who was suffering appendicitis.

As Severe Tropical Cyclone Rusty bore down on Port Hedland, the Lauren family from Karratha was frantically trying to access the only surgeon available to operate on 12-year-old Jaxon.

Jaxon was in Karratha in severe pain while the surgeon was 243 kilometres away in Port Hedland.

Kellie said the Royal Flying Doctor Service was unable to fly to Karratha due to the region being on Blue Alert.

The next option was to drive to Port Hedland themselves, but there was the concern of Jaxon’s appendix bursting en route.

In the end an ambulance from Karratha was able to take the family to Whim Creek where an ambulance from Port Hedland was waiting to take them the rest of the way to Port Hedland Hospital.

But not before being roadblocked by a bushfire burning between Karratha and Roebourne, wasting more critical time.

By the time Jaxon reached the operating room it was discovered his appendix had already split and leaked internally.

It all started on the Friday evening when Jaxon complained of a sore stomach area.

By Saturday morning Jaxon was in pain and vomiting, which Kellie said she assumed was gastro.

At 4am Sunday morning Jaxon was experiencing full-body shakes, and was rushed to the emergency department at Nickol Bay Hospital.

Kellie said Jaxon was sent home with painkillers believing he had ross river virus.

Jaxon slept all day before Sunday evening when his temperature rose and pain level rocketed.

He returned to the emergency department at Nickol Bay Hospital where Kellie said he was immediately seen by a doctor who diagnosed appendicitis.

Finally the family was in an ambulance on the way to Whim Creek but because Jaxon’s full bladder was pushing on his appendix, the last stretch of the journey was a time sensitive emergency.

“Then we got to Hedland and the appendix had actually popped already, so we’re very lucky we didn’t wait for a plane or drive ourselves,” Kellie said.

“It had popped and leaked so they took him straight to surgery at 1:30am.

“We were very lucky we rushed - that night was very scary.”

Kellie also had two younger daughters to care for during Jaxon’s emergency, on top on the cyclone threat and bushfire barricade.

After the surgery at 1:30am Monday in Port Hedland, which was a success, an infection resulting from the leaking appendix was discovered.

At 3am Monday Kellie, Jaxon’s dad Mark, and Jaxon’s two younger sisters were looking for accommodation.

They were able to stay at a donga at a work site but because of the looming cyclone it was too unsafe to stay any longer.

That same day, during Yellow Alert, the family was moved to a hostel behind the hospital.

The threat of a category 4 cyclone crossing the coast at Port Hedland meant Kellie had to leave and take her daughters back to Karratha.

An impending red alert that same day meant no one would be allowed to come or go from the hospital except emergencies, so Jaxon’s dad Mark stayed with Jaxon at the hospital while Kellie was dropped off at Whim Creek, picked up and taken back to Karratha.

“It was too dangerous for us to stay there,” Kellie said.

“I didn’t feel very safe staying there and the hospital obviously couldn’t accommodate all of us so we left and Mark stayed.

Port Hedland then went on red alert on Tuesday.

Kellie said fearing for her son’s life meant the threat of a severe tropical cyclone was no deterrent to travelling to Hedland to find a surgeon.

“Because he’d [been in pain] for about three days [by then] they were quite concerned it was going to burst.

“We didn’t even have time to think, because we were more concerned about Jaxon,” she sighed.

“[And no surgeons] could come [to Karratha] because of the cyclone.”

“The whole whirlwind.”

Thousands of fly-in, fly-out workers and travellers are benefitting from a record number of airport polling places, as early voting runs right through until the March 9 State election.

Polling places are open at Perth’s domestic and international terminals until Thursday March 7 from 4am to 7 pm, and from 4am until 6pm on Friday March 8.

Voting at Skippers and Cobham terminals is available from 4:30am to 8am and 12pm to 3pm Monday to Friday and at Cobham from 10:30am to 1:30 pm on weekends.

Voting at the Network Aviation terminal is available from 5am to 8am and 1pm to 4pm.

But on Election Day, only the polling places at the three main terminals will operate, opening between 8am and 6pm as required by law.

“I fully understand the difficulties faced by fly-in flyout workers and holidaymakers when it comes to voting,” said WA electoral commissioner Warwick Gately.

“They can vote not only at the airport’s three main terminals but also now at three regional operators as well.”

“If you’re going on shift or on holiday, take advantage of the airport voting that is available.

“And if you’re already away get online now and apply for a postal vote and we’ll get one out to you.”

During the 2009 Daylight Saving Referendum 6,373 votes were cast at Perth airport terminals and the Commission is expecting a big increase at this election, with figures indicating at least 35,000 FIFO workers are employed on WA resources projects.

The Kimberley’s historic Noonkanbah Station - scene of the landmark 1970s Indigenous land rights protests - marked another milestone last weekend, becoming the first community to participate in State Election 2013’s expanded remote voting program.

Nearly 100 locals flocked

to the community hall, after polling place operators Graeme Hastie and Peta Calladine flew in from Broome, the first of 22 teams visiting 46 Kimberley centres.

“We’ve had signs telling people at the store, the school, the head office and the telecentre,” said Noonkanbah community board member Francine Cox. “Our people really think it’s important, they’ve been coming in from across the Fitzroy River as well.”

Though the Kimberley boasts the majority of remote polling places, the service extends down through the Pilbara, the Midwest, the Goldfields and the Eucla, with a total of 30 teams visiting 73 communities including seven minesites (Argyle, Telfer, Solomon Kangi, Solomon Dally, Christmas Creek, Cloudbreak and Murrin Murrin).

At the last election only four mines were visited.

“Overall, we’ve expanded remote voting by more than 20 per cent at this election, from 59 centres in 2008 to 73 this time and have promoted it extensively as we push for more voter participation across the State,” said WA Electoral Commission elections manager David Payne.

“We’re spending longer at individual places and for the first time we’ll run remote

polling places at half a dozen centres on Election Day.” Remote polling has been running for decades and aside from the perennial challenge of distance, cyclones have previously disrupted voting in the Kimberley and the Pilbara.

Early last week polling teams travelled to Gibb River, Christmas Creek and the Pilbara community of Jigalong.

Liberal’s payroll tax savings delivers peanuts, say businesses

By Ben Leahy Karratha business representative John Lally has called on the Liberal Party to do more, following its announcement it will raise the payroll tax threshold to $850,000.

Under the Liberal Party plan, the tax-free threshold would be raised to $800,000 in 2014-15 and then $850,000 in 2016-17.

Currently, Western Australian businesses pay tax to the State Government at a rate of 5.5 per cent if their employees’ annual salaries total more than $750,000.

But Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry CEO John Lally said the increase doesn’t go far enough and labeled it “insignificant”.

He said that high wages in the Pilbara meant few small businesses would qualify for the threshold

even with the $100,000 increase.

“What I am saying is that [the Liberal Party] needed to take into account the high wages up here,” Mr Lally said.

“Small businesses are badly disadvantaged up here because to reach the threshold, they probably only need about seven employees.

Mr Lally’s comments were echoed by John Nicolaou the spokesperson for the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia.

Mr Nicolaou said a fairer tax free threshold would be $1.5 million.

“It’s been almost a decade since the last threshold increase and in that time wages have increased by 80 per cent,” Mr Nicolaou said.

“Lifting the threshold to $1.5 million would take us back to 2004 levels and … would cost about

$300 million in a total payroll tax take of $3.5 billion out of a total revenue base of $25.4 billion.

“This is a small fraction of the entire tax take after a decade of inaction.”

However, State Treasurer Troy Buswell said the Liberal Party’s threshold increase would enable more than 16,000 employers to save $121million.

He said the new threshold also comes on top of a payroll tax rebate announced in the last State Budget.

“As a result [of both tax breaks], more than half of all Western Australian businesses will either pay no payroll tax or have their payroll tax liability substantially reduced in 2012-13,” Mr Buswell said.

Questions raised over Pilbara’s level of palliative care funding

By Ben Leahy The Liberal Party last week announced it would increase funding for palliative care, if re-elected in the State Election, but did not specify how much would be made available to boost lagging services in the Pilbara.

Under the Liberal Party plan announced on February 26, an extra $20 million would be spent on increasing palliative care in Western Australia with $3.8 million over four years going to regional services.

Minister for Health Kim Hames said the funding would be allocated with reference to

the Rural Palliative Care Model, established in 2008.

“Funding for palliative care in regional WA would be increased to a total of $12.8million over four years,” he said.

“Demand for palliative care services has grown throughout regional WA. “This will provide more people with access to the Liverpool Care pathway, which allows people to spend their last days in the comfort and security of their own home in a supported environment.”

Health professionals have welcomed any increase in funding with residents

of Pilbara towns, such as Karratha, currently having very few options for palliative care.

While the Nickol Bay and Roebourne Hospitals offer some services, there is no dedicated palliative care facility and the Pilbara Echo is unaware of any provider offering palliative care services to people in their homes.

According to the Department of Health’s Rural Palliative Care Model report in 2008, while all other regions of WA had palliative services, there was “no formalized palliative care service in the Pilbara”.

Karratha to get new mental health facility

A new mental health facility to support at risk people will be built in Karratha under a Liberal Government plan announced on February 25.

She said there was potential for her team to work with the new facility but that so far she had not been involved in the consultation process for it.

Minister for Mental Health Helen Morton said the Government would allocate $6.2million to build and a further $2.8million per year to operate both the Karratha facility and another in Bunbury in the South West.

“As long as this facility coordinates with existing facilities and assists with our existing services – fantastic,” Ms Halpin said.

“These facilities will provide 24/7 support for people with mental illness either at risk of hospitalisation or to support their transition back into the community after acute care,” Mrs Morton said.

YAC preparing to open doors to FMG negotiations The Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation is preparing internally to reopen Native Title Negotiations with Fortescue Metals Group, according to CEO Michael Woodley.

FMG has been trying to bypass YAC during land access negotiations for its Solomon Hub iron ore mine by signing a $4 million agreement with the breakaway Wirlu-murra Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation.

However, the Federal Court earlier this month ruled that YAC is the sole legal representative for the Yindjibarndi traditional owners and FMG must instead negotiate with them.

Mr Woodley said the ball was now in FMG’s court.

“What we are doing is putting in the processes to try and deal

[with FMG] again,” Mr Woodley said.

“We think FMG should come to the table with a better deal that recognises and respects Yindjibarndi people for our connection to country.

“Until they start to realise and respect that the Yindjibarndi people are the one and the same people represented by YAC … we are going to continue opposing FMG operations.”

While FMG CEO Nev Power said in a statement following the court ruling that his company would continue working with the Yindjibarndi people, an agreement appears a long way off.

Under the Native Title Act, mining companies are only compelled to negotiate with Native Title bodies in good faith – they are not obligated to make a monetary offer.

Native Title bodies, like YAC, are also unable to veto or prevent mining operations on the lands they claim if they are unhappy with the compensation deals offered to them.

“What they try and do under the Native Title Act is encourage mining companies to build positive relationships with Native Title groups,” Mr Woodley said.

As a result, Mr Woodley said the dispute with FMG will probably go on unless someone from company started “taking ownership and leadership” for building better relations with YAC. In the meantime, YAC are preparing another submission they hope to take to the Federal Court later this year or early next year seeking full exclusive rights to the land they claim.

New pathways will improve pedestrian safety Improvements to Dampier Highway in the Shire of Roebourne are set to continue with almost two kilometres of pedestrian pathways to be constructed as part of the Shire’s $2 million streetscape project.

The Shire has boosted the value of the project by over $300,000 to deliver a longer and higher standard pathway that will service the Karratha Leisureplex.

Stretching from Burgess Road to Galbraith Road along the northern side of Dampier Highway, the new pathways will link pedestrians with the new Leisureplex and Karratha High School extensions, which are due for completion later this year.

Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig said the new pathways were an important addition to the highway, particularly with the new facilities currently under construction.

“There will be a significant increase in pedestrian traffic with the completion of these new facilities, so it is important that we provide safe access,” Councillor White-Hartig said.

Great Northern Hwy to run from Perth to Darwin If re-elected, the Liberal Government is promising to start work during its next term on the Perth-Darwin National Highway (PDNH).

Premier Colin Barnett said this major new road project would remove a significant volume of heavy vehicle through-traffic from the Swan Valley and redirect it to the new highway.

It will ultimately run 37 kilometres north of the current Tonkin Highway termination at Reid Highway to join Great Northern Highway at Brand Highway in Muchea.

“A Liberal Government, if re-elected, will allocate $196 million to complete the necessary land acquisition and approval process and get construction under way,” Mr Barnett said.

“It is anticipated that major works would commence at the northern end of the alignment during 2016.

“The existing route through the Swan Valley – the Great Northern Highway – is the only road transport link to the State’s north and is under significant and increasing pressure from trucks and heavy vehicle movement.”

Ellenbrook will use the new link.

“This provides a more direct route from PDNH to most major industrial and commercial centres in the metropolitan area.

“Trucks will use this route rather than travelling on roads where they can be a safety hazard for other motorists so, not only will the new route improve safety, it will provide economic benefits through greater access and connectivity.”

“Major construction is scheduled to start in 2016 and completion is expected by 2019.”

The Liberal-led Government has committed $8 million to start project planning of the new highway.

The Pilbara Association of Non Government Organisations is calling for two key changes to lift the service level to the Pilbara.

Firstly, the timely release of affordable housing and service accommodation in the Pilbara and secondly, increasing government funding to reflect the true cost of delivering services in the Pilbara.

PANGO is the peak body representing over 30 NGOs in the Pilbara which deliver the majority of human services on behalf of the Government to both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community members.

According to PANGO, availability of affordable housing in the Pilbara is a critical issue that needs to be urgently addressed, in particular the timely provision of affordable NGO housing,

housing for homeless and people entering the workforce, as well as affordable service delivery accommodation.

“The service worker accommodation that has been recently made available in Hedland is not affordable for the majority of NGO workers,” said Bob Neville, PANGO Chairperson. “$866 [per week] for a 3-bedroom property and $666 [per week] for a 2-bed property is clearly not affordable for workers on an average wage of $55,000 per year.

“For housing to be affordable the rent should be set at a maximum of 30 per cent of gross income, which would equate to $317 per week for an NGO worker on an average wage of $55,000 per year.

“It should also be noted that NGOs cannot afford to subsidise these housing costs as there is

currently no provision within current funding contracts for such subsidies.”

PANGO advocates for all Service Worker Accommodation properties utilised for NGOs across the Pilbara to be transferred to the NGO Housing System with a uniform rental rate equivalent to the current NGO Housing system rental rate (currently set at $418 per week for 3-bedroom property), which places rents within reach of NGO workers.

“The Regional Price Index for the Pilbara is 37.1 per cent and this needs to be applied to all government funding contracts for NGO’s operating in the Pilbara,” Mr Neville said.

“For too long, services have been underfunded and this has greatly undermined the quality and sustainability of service delivery for the people of the Pilbara.”

The Labor Party last week promised that if re-elected it would spend $20 million over four years to fast track the roll out of an award-winning information technology system in regional State schools.

Shadow Minister for Education Paul Papalia said from Karratha last week that the new funding would help Pilbara State schools more quickly adopt the Standard Operating Environment 4.

Mr Papalia said the SOE4 is an operating system that makes it easier for schools to use wireless tablets, laptops and PCs in the classroom.

“The system simplifies the hardware needed in schools and will enhance teachers’ delivery of e-learning for pupils,” Mr Papalia said.

“The SOE4 is run on a wireless network and the Department of Education estimates that it cuts ICT running costs in each school by 66 per cent through reductions in infrastructure.

Mr Papalia said that while a Commonwealth grant was enabling the operating system to be rolled out in high schools, the WA Labor funding would now mean regional primary schools could also adopt the

system sooner.

He said Labor would also support the SOE4 with increased e-learning initiatives between regional and city-based students and institutions, like Scitech and the Art Gallery of WA. But, Liberal Party Minister for Education Peter Collier said the SOE4 didn’t need to be fast tracked in the Pilbara.

“Labor’s announcement will be of little benefit to schools in the Pilbara because the majority of the 32 schools in the region already have SOE4,” Mr Collier said.

Young author booked in for a bright future

Young Karratha resident Emily Barratt lives in a magical world a bit like the characters in her novels.

Not only does the secondary student spend many hours exploring a realm filled with witches and dragons that exists in her imagination, but she also managed the impressive feat of publishing three books before her fifteenth birthday.

Aimed at 10 to 14-year-old readers, Emily’s Ketone series are fantasy novels that draw inspiration from Japanese manga stories, such as Naruta.

The books are about three generations of seemingly normal teenagers, whose lives are turned upside down when their inner magic is unleashed.

For Emily, the extraordinary tales are really just a a natural

expression of her inner creativity.

“I have loved reading writing and drawing since I was really young and it just grew into a hobby that has now turned into three books,” Emily said.

Clearly she is pretty good at her hobby.

Even seasoned authors will be jealous at her ability to write three books between 36,000 and 42,000 words each in nine months.

Yet the process of publishing the books did also take a little bit of secret magic.

It started when Emily showed her uncle and aunty Shaun and Geraldine Burgess the draft of her books on a pen drive.

“We started reading and we thought, ‘This is a story that needs to be published,” Shaun said.

“Geraldine and I are educators and and thought that someone who has got an obvious talent, needs to have it recognised.”

That led Shaun and his wife to set about secretly having Emily’s books published.

“We said to the publisher to just do the syntax editing and leave the language in the book the way it is because we wanted the voice to be Emily’s - that of a teenage girl,” Shaun said.

The first Emily knew of the plan was when her mum Liz told her to get ready for a business meeting at her uncle and aunty’s house.

“I had to put on a nice dress and some make-up and heels and when we got there, my family and friends were standing around the table,” Emily said.

“Some of my friends were down from Hedland as well, with posters of the books [that Shuan and Geraldine had also had printed].”

Emily said it was an amazing surprise and she couldn’t help but think, ‘What is going on?’

Now she is set to publish the fourth book in the series and is planning a launch in front of Collins Booksellers in Centro for the weekend beginning March 9.

She said she is proud of her books and happy that young girls are contacting her on the Internet to say they like her books.

“I love getting feedback about my books from other girls,” Emily said.

Fishing, rock bands and fashion – a fun-packed Gamex 2013 It’s only days before Gamex will be hitting the town of Exmouth.

Large boats from Perth and Broome will be hitting the high seas, while cars towing boats from the north, south and east will be on the roads heading for the fishing mecca of the North West.

Boom in dance students means more classes

DeckArts keep class numbers under 25 students per class, and even less in ballet,

DeckArts dance studio in Karratha recently held enrolment days for 2013 and commenced classes for term one.

Due to the huge increase in ballet enrolments, Director Lea Cullen Lynes has created new age groups to limit the numbers in each class.

DeckArts currently has 90 ballet students enrolled throughout all age groups.

The Magpie-lark (Grallina cyanoleuca), also known as the Mudlark in Victoria and Western Australia, is a conspicuous Australian bird of small to medium size.

It is a common and very widespread bird both in urban and rural areas, occupying all parts of Australia except for Tasmania and some of the inland desert in the far North West of Western Australia.

The Mudlark appears

to have adapted well to the presence of humans.

In fact, it is neither a magpie nor a lark and is not particularly closely related to either, but in the light of modern DNA studies, is now grouped with the Monarch flycatchers.

The Magpie-lark is around 26 to 30 centimetres long when fully grown and boldly pied in black and white.

They are a familiar sight around the country sitting on telephone wires either alone or in pairs, or patrolling any patch of bare ground, especially foreshores or swamps, on their welldeveloped legs.

The sexes are similar from a distance but easy to tell apart - the

female has a white throat, the male a black throat and a white “eyebrow”.

Juveniles and immatures of either sex have the white throat of the female, the black eyestripe of the male and a white belly.

Primarily carnivorous it eats all sorts of small creatures.

The Magpie-lark can adapt to an enormous range of different habitats, requiring only some soft, bare ground for foraging, a supply of mud for making a nest and a tree to make it in.

The Magpie-lark is aggressively territorial, and will fearlessly defend its territory against larger species such as magpies, ravens, kookaburras

and even the Wedgetailed Eagle.

They are also known to attack people to defend their territory; such attacks occur usually within 60 metres of the nesting site.

Native birds and their nests are protected under legislation, so if a particular bird is causing serious safety problems, contact the wildlife officer at your local Department of Environment and Conservation office.

The wildlife officer can assess the situation and remove the culprit if necessary.

Holding a stick or umbrella over your head will often force a bird to keep its distance.

Similarly, fitting a long orange traffic flag to the rear of the bike may work.

Birds generally pair for life and defend a territory together.

The nest is round, about 150 millimetres in diameter with vertical sides and is usually placed on a flat branch somewhere near water or on a horizontal beam of a telephone pole.

The nest is made of grass and plant material thickly plastered together with mud and generously lined with grass, feathers and fur.

Breeding is opportunistic and any time after rain in drier areas, and multiple broods are common when conditions allow.

Both parents incubate a clutch of between three and five eggs.

It is quite common for only some of the chicks to survive because sometimes the nest just isn’t big enough for all the baby birds, therefore one baby will sometimes push another out the nest and it is most likely that the chick will not survive the fall.

Magpie-larks are one of the 200odd species of birds around the world that are known to sing in duet, each partner producing about one note a second, but a halfsecond apart, so that humans find it difficult to tell that there are actually two birds singing, not one.

Tom Price welcomes community with barbecue breakfast The Tom Price Community hosted its first Welcome Event for 2013 last month, and featured over 40 displays from local service providers, community and sporting groups.

The breakfast was attended by at least 700 of Tom Price’s new and not-so-new residents.

All were officially welcomed by long standing resident Bob Stump from Lestok Tours, who spoke about the changes he has seen in Tom Price over his 20-year residency.

The aim of the Welcome Breakfast is to give residents the opportunity to find out about the services, groups and clubs that exist in Tom Price.

The town of Tom Price may have had its beginnings as a mining town, but the breakfast demonstrated that community spirit is thriving thanks to residents who volunteer hours of their time each week.

Attendees were treated to barbecue pancakes - cooked by

The event was declared a success by those who attended as guests and those who promoted their service, club or group, with new and old residents all discovering something new about Tom Price.

Tom Price Fire and Rescue arrived with a brand new fire truck and demonstrated how it worked for kids and adults; it was hard to determine who was more impressed.

Tom Price ambulance officers were on hand, and the community saw them leap into action as they were called out to a job.

Tom Price Speedway also brought down a car for everyone to see.

The event was organised by Mel May from the Shire of Ashburton and funded by Rio Tinto.

As I’ve been out and about this week chatting with friends, I’m finding people are feeling a little guilty about falling off the New Year resolution wagon and are having trouble getting back on again.

Goals are goals for a reason; they are something to aim for.

Just because you didn’t reach them as efficiently or easily as you would like, doesn’t mean they are not still worth chasing.

The fact is, if they are still on your mind, it means you still have time to make a new plan and tackle them again.

A friend worked out that in between my big weight loss and having another baby and putting on a little weight again and taking it off, I have lost over 100 kilograms in my lifetime.

I was shocked to say the least.

I had never stopped to think about it like that.

My goal has always been a certain size - a specific kilo weight.

It hadn’t even occurred to me that in trying to reach my goal, even after putting more weight back on after my second bub, that I had smashed it over and over again, even if I still wasn’t exactly where I wanted to be.

Progress is progress however you look at it and all the little things you learn along the way make a big difference to your lifestyle.

Once you start to tackle your weight, it is so important to celebrate all the little steps.

Even if you splurge or fall off the wagon, there will still be little things to celebrate.

You would still have learnt new things, tried new things and made changes for yourself.

You will know a little more each time and eventually you will create the perfect little lifestyle plan for yourself.

You can wade through the thousands of diet options out there and try them endlessly and even if they don’t work for you,

you would have gained the knowledge that they didn’t.

Healthy weight does not come from a diet that peels weight from your body in a 6-week period, it comes with finding your way thought all the confusion to something that suits you and your family best.

It comes from eating good, fresh food and fitting the preparation and eating of that food into your everyday life.

It comes from learning, success, failure and falling off the wagon.

It does not come from starting at day one, following a plan until day 30 and then thinking you can go back to exactly what you were doing before.

If you are not learning every day in life, I personally think you’ve stopped living.

Your body and food is the absolute perfect thing for you to dedicate your time to.

Lets face it - a lot of us wake up every morning, look at ourselves and spend time wishing this or that was different and we close our eyes hoping for some miracle to change us overnight.

If you have the time to beat yourself up, then you have the time to make changes.

So take that time you use negatively each day and turn it positive.

Stop thinking about what you wish to change and think about what you can change that day.

Even if it’s excluding one thing from one meal, that is a great start.

Trust me, the more changes you make, the more results you see, and the more you want to change and that is how you create yourself a healthy lifestyle plan, rather than a diet.

Even the little changes have big reactions in your life. You feel great that you’ve been able to set a mini-goal for yourself and succeeded.

Even if it’s for just one meal on just one day.

You will make changes that your children will see.

That is essentially all you can hope for in life, that you set a good example, lead by that example and teach your kids to be that example to their kids.

Make one swap in each meal or one little change and then follow it with another and another.

Sugar converts to fat quicker than actual fat does and unfortunately the whole lowfat industry isn’t what it was originally created to be.

A lot of the so called ‘lowfat’ and ‘light’ products on the market contain a lot of sugar.

Take a moment when you pick up a low-fat or light product to pick up a full-fat or regular product and compare the nutritional panels on the back.

Less sugar is equally as important as less fat, so keep an eye on your sugar intake and watch out for it hidden in the socalled ‘good for you’ products.

Aussies hold too much of their wealth in housing Australians have a dangerously disproportionate share of their wealth in housing, warned Macrobusiness’ chief economist, Leith van Onselen.

Van Onselen said mortgage affordability remains poor on an overall level and the proportion of household income ‘chewed-up’ by mortgage interest payments is 34% higher than in 1989, when mortgage rates peaked at 17%.

“Virtually all growth in housing values has come from land price appreciation, with land prices roughly doubling relative to GDP since the late 1980’s.”

The ratio of Australian mortgage debt to GDP has risen four-fold since 1990, following deregulation of the financial sector, while the share of loans channelled into housing has increased from 24% of total loans in 1990 to 59% currently.

“The rapid expansion of mortgage debt and housing values has been funded, to a large extent, by heavy offshore borrowings by Australia’s banks and is represented by a massive expansion in bank assets – mainly mortgages.”

Strongly rising commodity prices have also played a role in increasing housing values since 2004 via their positive impact on incomes, said van Onselen.

“The Australian Treasury estimates that 50% of Australia’s income growth over the 2000’s came from the oneoff terms-of-trade boom, whereas McKinsey estimates that 90% of Australian income growth since 2005 came from the mining boom.”

The number of property investors has also surged – from 696,000 in 1990 to 1.75 million in 2010 – and nearly 60% of investors are baby boomers.

“Two-thirds of investors were negatively geared in 2010, losing on average $2,750 per year, or a total of -$4.8bn. Three quarters of negatively

geared investors earned less than $80,000.”

Van Onselen said the country’s ‘rigid’ urban planning system has ensured that the increased demand has manifested in rising prices rather than increased dwelling construction.

“Empirical evidence from the US and elsewhere shows that markets with responsive land-use regulations have more affordable housing markets and experience less price volatility, as changes in demand manifest more in new construction rather than prices – growth in US house prices bore little relation to income and population growth.”

He says US markets with responsive land-use regulation remained affordable and experienced relatively low house price volatility throughout the bubble/bust period.

“In Georgia [USA], policies mandating lending to the poor and under-privileged resulted in massive subprime lending, yet, Georgia’s delinquencies never reached the levels of the supply-restricted bubble states.

Big demand ‘shock’ from the GFC caused rate of household formation to plummet as individuals increasingly opted for group housing.”

This, in effect, turned a perceived housing shortage into a glut.

But could the group housing option be viable in Australia? Yes, said van Onselen – and it’s actually already started to grow in popularity.

“According to the 2011 census, the percentage of group households increased to 4.1% from 3.9% in 2006, whereas the percentage of single (lone person) households declined to 24.3% from 24.4%.”

While Australia’s restrictive urban planning regime has helped drive prices higher during the boom, van Onselen says it’s unlikely to save the country from price falls in the event of a major shock to demand.

“A perceived housing shortage could easily turn into an oversupply, just like it did in the supply-restricted states of the USA.”

ABS data confirms this trend, with the number of people per dwelling rising since 2006, while the number of bedrooms per dwelling has also been trending upwards.

Factors including a 2011 peak in commodity prices (and subsequent decline) and an aging population could further reduce the economy’s potential demand for housing.

“There is significant latent capacity (excess bedrooms) in the pre-existing

Guitar god Randall Waller spoke to the Pilbara Echo ahead of Rose Tattoo’s West Australian tour about being old, fishing and of course, his great love – music.

International Women’s Day

By Tamara Binamat Next Friday March 8 women will be honoured and celebrated at a grand cocktail soiree at Ibis Styles in Karratha for International Women’s Day. As women mingle, eat and network they will be entertained by the soulful sounds of Kylianne Turton, a soloist singer and keyboardist from Karratha.

Kylianne has been performing around Karratha for about two years after starting out at the Millars Well markets and going on to gig regularly at the Dampier Yacht Club.

A self-taught keyboardist,

Kylianne has bee performing and singing for at least a decade.

A highlight of Kylianne’s music career is being appointed the national anthem singer at the 2012 ANZ Sport Awards at Crown Casino in front of 700 people.

Originally from Busselton, Kylianne sings an array of cover songs and has even penned a few original songs.

“I make whatever song I’m singing suit my style,” Kylianne said.

Kylianne’s style is compared to the likes of Missy Higgins and said her genre would be a “mix of everything” as she is influenced by everything from the Eagles

Back on home soil, emerging folk artist Eli Wolfe is stopping off in Port Hedland next weekend as part of his Perfect Moment national tour.

After travelling internationally and around Australia on a community Australia tour in 2010, Eli Wolfe will be performing at Hedland’s Markets and Melodies event on March 9.

No stranger to our region, this emerging musician is excited to reconnect with the people of the Pilbara.

“I was up in Port Hedland in September 2010 at the Civic Centre and it was great being in touch with the people that came to the show,” Eli said.

“It’s great to be able to come and contribute to the community and keep that connection going.”

Originally from Sydney, Eli performed at Canadian Music Week in 2010 and said it was the tour that was the catalyst to his career taking off.

His career grew organically from there and he scored an opportunity to perform in Germany.

After Europe, Eli is back to rock the Pilbara as part of his Perfect Moment tour.

“Port Hedland and the northern part of Australia is a unique area,” Eli said. “[After] travelling a lot, you appreciate all the beauty of all the different places.

“Sharing my music makes me feel like I’m really contributing to society on some level.”

A self-taught guitar player, Eli said he has always loved the creativity of music since he was a young child.

“I loved writing as a kid too; it’s self indulgent really as far as being able to create something then being able to share it.

“I really do find [creating music] a great part of myself.”

The soloist defines his style as “a blend of folk, blues and psychedelia with a little soul strapped in there”.

“You could throw a thousand different genres in there with a bit of contemporary,” Eli said.

“The music definitely has blues elements because it’s empathy driven and awareness driven songs.

“I base sounds around the context of the lyric” Eli is releasing his brand new EP Perfect Moment, recorded in Sydney with ARIA-nominated producer Lachlan Mitchell (The Jezabels) next Friday March 8, the day prior to his Port Hedland show.

Penned in Los Angeles, the fourtrack EP showcases Eli as a truly

diverse artist.

While overseas, Eli contributed his song Eggman (inspired by one of Eli’s own paintings) to classic US cartoon comedy Futurama.

‘Perfect Moment’ will be released on on Eli’s own label, Magic Journey Recordings, with distribution through MGM.

WA’s vital resources sector boosted If re-elected, the Liberal party is promising an investment of $20 million towards ensuring the continued viability, growth and international competitiveness of Western Australia’s resources sector.

Minister for Mines and Petroleum Norman Moore said a Liberal Government would continue to foster the development and expansion of all parts of the Western Australian mining and petroleum industries that are vital to the State’s economy.

“In the past four years, the Liberal-led Government has invested more than $3 million to improve the Department of Mines and Petroleum’s online approvals tracking system, which has reduced the mining tenement backlog by almost

10,000 applications,” Mr Moore said.

“This work will continue with a $10million expansion of the approvals tracking system through Phase Two of the ‘Resource Track’ project, which will allow proponents to track the progress of their approvals, regardless of which government department is evaluating them.”

The Minister said a further $8 million would be spent to establish the State Environmental Data Library, a publicly available online biodiversity, water and cultural heritage database.

“This will provide a standardised data collection, cross referencing and online electronic access system for the enormous amount of

information that is held by industry and Government agencies in Western Australia,” he said.

Mr Moore said the system would ensure the cultural and environmental assessment processes associated with project approvals were more efficient and cost effective.

International promotion of Western Australia’s mining and petroleum services sector would also be supported by $2million to help establish a marketing fund.

The marketing fund would enable industry representation at the major international mining and petroleum forums and to also engage a trade consultant in Nairobi, Kenya.

“Deciding the right time to retire was never going to be easy.

“However after almost twenty years with BHP Billiton, twelve as a senior executive and nearly six as CEO, I believe now is the right time to pass the leadership baton.

“One of the first decisions I made when I became CEO was to bring Andrew into BHP Billiton, and I look forward to working closely with him, the Board and the management team during the transition.”

Mr Mackenzie will be based at the Group’s headquarters in Melbourne, Australia.

The Exploration Incentive Scheme plays a key part in encouraging exploration for minerals and petroleum for the long-term future of the State’s resources sector.

“We will also support the responsible development of onshore unconventional gas and the State’s uranium resources, which will be developed and conducted in accordance with world’s best practice and ecologically sustainable development,” Mr Moore said.

The Board of BHP Billiton announced this week that Marius Kloppers will retire as Chief Executive Officer and a Director of the company on May 10, 2013.

Andrew Mackenzie will succeed him and join the Board when Mr Kloppers ceases work.

Mr Kloppers will retire from the Group on October 1, 2013.

Mr Mackenzie, 56-yearsold, is BHP Billiton’s Chief Executive Non-Ferrous and boasts over thirty years experience in oil and gas, petrochemicals and minerals.

He joined BHP Billiton in November 2008.

Mr Mackenzie has a doctorate in Chemistry and a first-class degree in Geology.

In making the announcement, BHP Billiton Chairman Jac Nasser acknowledged the contribution Mr Kloppers made to the growth of BHP Billiton.

“Marius was appointed Chief Executive just prior to the global financial crisis,” Mr Nasser said.

“Despite an exceptionally difficult economic environment during his tenure, Marius and his team have delivered for shareholders, significantly outperforming our peers in terms of total shareholder returns.

“He drove new investments into next generation opportunities including US onshore gas and liquids and created one of the most valuable companies in the world.

“He leaves BHP Billiton a safer and stronger company.

“In succeeding Marius, Andrew brings a unique combination of deep industry knowledge and global management experience to the CEO role.

New committee members to take Pilbara junior footy forward

By Clint Degebrodt The 2013 West Pilbara Junior Football Association has picked up some handy recruits to the committee for its upcoming season.

Tireless administrators Clint Johnson and Sharon Broad have now come on board to steer the competition into its next phase of development.

This follows on from Shane Harris’ departure last year after 10 years of service, and now legendary association president Ritchie Patching stepping out of the job after 11 years of service to the community.

Also vacating the committee are equally celebrated volunteer Shelly Patching after eight years, Murray Levis after 10 years and Dave Atkinson, who completed his tour of duty in 2012 despite having no children in the competition.

How will the association cope?

Patching says ‘with no problems’.

“The competition is strong, has great clubs and people leading them, we have structures in place and protocols and procedures that will make the next president’s job easy and ensure the kids get the best

out of their footy.”

Patching observed, “The opportunities that exist now are remarkable and include a great community comp, [and] the ability to play representative footy for the WPJFA [and] represent the Pilbara at the North West Champs.”

“Last year, we had our players at Swan Districts in the 14s, 15s, 16s and Colts.”

“We even had three boys play in the AFL for WA in the National 16’s Championships, all those opportunities are ahead of our players and members.”

The competition will begin in early May and clubs and coaches have been planning the participation, education and fun for their players since late November.

On to the new committee comes Pilbara legend, former East Perth and Kats champion Clint Johnson in the vice president’s role as well as softball, touch, Black Rock Stakes runner and basketball champ Sharon Broad in the treasures position.

Students make a splash at swimming carnival Karratha Senior High School dived into their annual swimming carnival on 22 February with staff and students embracing the spirit of the day.

Traditional events, such as the 50m freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke, were held alongside novelty relay events with scores allocated in a way to encourage participation as much as results.

At the end of the very hot day, students cooled off in style with a turn on the Aquarun and a whole of school dance to the song “Harlem Shake” as per the viral Internet craze right now.

Once the fun and games were up, the final results were announced with team DeGrey 1086 beating out Hamersley 921, Chichester 809 and Fortescue 762.

If you are an organised person, who enjoys working with dynamic people to provide quality experiences for our local juniors and youth, and can spare time for six meetings a season and can be available one night a week to answer questions from clubs then one of these roles could be for you.

They are the quality makings of a very good team to lead junior football in the Shire of Roebourne.

With teams representing different metropolitan and regional areas of WA, the two boys will likely join the South West regional team to play a series of round robin Aussie Rules matches.

South Africa where they played a series of games against young South African Aussie Rules players and visited historical and cultural sites, such as Mandela House.

The Nicky Winmar tournament is also a stepping stone to gaining selection into one of the Western Australian sides that play in the Under 16 National Carnival, an event watched by AFL recruiters.

The only downside for Steven and TJ is that they will be leaving most of their Pilbara teammates behind.

V Swans Aussie Rules development officers had originally planned to send a North West team of 15 Pilbara footballers to the carnival, but wild Tropical Cyclone Rusty weather forced the Karratha and Port Hedland players to cancel their trips.

Steven and TJ will now try to ensure the setback doesn’t leave them under the weather so that they can have fun playing the game they love.

League’s footy fixture for 2013 released Pilbara Rugby League players are already gearing up for the crash and bash of another season with the local competition releasing its fixture last week for the 2013 season.

Kicking off with last year’s premiers the Wickham Wasps against the Hedland Hawks on May 18, the season runs through to the Grand Final to be held on August 23.

It is officially off-season for Karratha’s mountain bikers with their race season typically running from April to September.

However, this Monday, March 3, they are back on their bikes for Round 5 of their more casual Summer Race Series – events in which riders generally spend as much time enjoying a cold beer as working hard in the saddle.

Burrup Mountain Bike Club president Damian Muller said this weekend’s summer series ride starting at 5:30pm is a great chance for new riders of all ages to try out cycling.

It doesn’t matter if interested riders don’t have their own bike either as they can jump on either the small or medium sized Giant Trance mountain bikes the club has spare for newbies.

The only hiccup this week could be wet weather resulting from Tropical Cyclone Rusty.

However, Darren is confident Round 5 will go ahead on Monday at 5:30pm as planned. “[Riders should] plan on the race being on, and we’ll advertise it via Facebook and email if we cancel it,” Darren said.

“Unless we get so much rain that the tracks we are intending to use are unrideable, [the race will go ahead].”

Darren also said the Burrup Mountain Bike Club is keen to hold more mountain bike skills clinics and train locals to become coaches.

This follows on from the success of the Karratha skills clinics run last year by riders from the Perthbased Rock and Roll Mountain Biking tour company.

The event had 69 riders taking part despite temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.

Darren said they also had to create more places for 5 to 12-year-old juniors after getting more interest than expected.

“That was an outstanding success,” he said.

As well as planning to hold another skills clinic this year with mountain biking experts from elsewhere, Darren is also hoping to train up locals.

“We’ve got the skills and experience within the club on a mountain bike to do some fundamental [skills coaching],” Darren said.

“And we do a little bit of [coaching] but it is not official coaching.”

Darren said if the club had qualified coaches, they could hold more skills clinics more often and encourage juniors, in particular, to take up the sport.

With the club securing funding options for the project, they are now looking for members who are keen to train for their coaching accreditation.

Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report

By Jenni Gates Julian Fox has returned to Exmouth from the UK for yet another fishing holiday.

Julian has visited Exmouth several times over the last ten years specifically for the fishing.

Julian is an avid sport and fly-fishing enthusiast who makes the trek across the globe to enjoy the fabulous fishing Exmouth offers.

This year, Julian fished from the shore with his a stick bait around the west side and caught several different species including queenies, emperor, golden trevally and gold spot trevally.

He was also nearly spooled by two big trevally at Pilgramunna and Oysters.

Julian did some fly-fishing down towards the jetty at Learmonth using a crab fly pattern on an 8 weight and intermediate line.

He spotted a school of four permit (snub nosed dart) about 40 metres away, 5 metres out from the water’s edge moving toward him, so he carefully walked out of the water and knelt down on the sand 10 metres from the shoreline.

There were no waves so he cast his flyline straight out, half on the beach and half in the water and let it all sink down to the bottom.

He looked at his watch at this point and

waited 4 minutes for the school of four fish to finally arrive.

In that time they were very content to feed away and mingle around.

Julian said it was great to watch them.

When they did arrive over his line he started twitching the crab like it was running away.

One of the snub nosed dart peeled off from the school and took Julian’s fly very close in.

He landed the fish about 150 metres down the beach from where it ate the fly.

He was a bit shocked and jelly legged at this point as you can imagine.

However, the absolute joy and excitement is shown in this week’s picture with Julian holding his permit after he set up his camera for a self portrait and then happily released it.

A permit is a very prized catch for flyfishing anglers, as they are difficult to catch and fight hard.

This fish is not small either!

They are a very hardy fish and release fit and healthy.

Well done Julian – great effort.

Dave Holbery is up from Perth to do some work and play involving fishing.

Dave was astounded by the rich and healthy marine life in the marina.

The variety of species and action every night down there has been keeping Dave up to the wee hours of the morning as he just can’t seem to leave the action.

Dave caught his first sand-bass, as well as small bream, juvenile emperor, mangrove jack, Spanish flag and species he couldn’t quite identify that resembled juvenile ruby jobfish.

Dave was using a lightweight Nexave spin outfit spooled with 30lb zulu braid, 20lb instinct leader and had a 1/0 instinct j-hook unweighted with hardy head for bait.

He also used soft plastic lures and said he couldn’t have done anything down there at that time without his led-lenser headlamp.

Night fishing can be a great option at this time of year with daytime temperatures in the 40s.

Karratha’s kids step up to the plate for new baseball league

By Cameron Coles Karratha kids swung for the fences in a new baseball competition launched on Thursday February 21 with former professional player Lee Darracott watching on.

The senior and junior kids competitions attracted 45 eager batters and pitchers, as the 14 to 17-year-old senior kids battled in a skillful contest and the 11 to 13-year-old juniors played with a machine pitching the balls.

ongoing baseball league in the region.

There has not been a junior baseball league in Karratha for a number of years, even though junior teeball is very popular.

With many of the kids making the step from teeball to baseball for the first time, former professional with the San Francisco Giants and Perth Heat, Lee Darracott, flew to Karratha to hold training sessions from February 18 to 20.

It was fantastic to see the kids really enjoy training under a pro baseballer for the three days, and it gave them a lot of confidence going into the game on February 21.
