Gamex smashes records
The land and sea around Exmouth burst to life during the week as everyone from fashion designer Liz Davenport to Angry Anderson and his band Rose Tattoo flocked to the town for the Gamex fishing festival. But it was the fishermen with the biggest fish to fry as one team hauled in a near 1,000-pound marlin. This lightning shot was taken just outside of the LIA, on March 9 during the thunderstorm just outside of Karratha at around 7pm. My camera is a Sony a900 with 24-70mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss/Sony lens. This was a 30 second exposure with f/8 aperture and ISO setting to 200. I thought I would get some human interaction in the shot. I thought it was a good contrast between the fierce storm in the background and busy people going about their daily routines. Photo By Geoff Ellis

Brendon Grylls claims big victory in the Pilbara By Ben Leahy Brendon Grylls has triumphed in the Pilbara after one of the largest swings in the State Election enabled him to end more than 30-years of Labor Party representation in the seat. But it could prove a bitter sweet victory after the Mr Grylls-led Nationals picked up more seats than in 2008 but still lost the balance of power to the Liberal Party. Despite this, Mr Grylls is hopeful the Nationals can retain their influence in parliament. He told ABC television on election night he thought his good relationship with Premier Barnett and the Liberal Party would continue. But Mr Grylls has since given no further comment as he waits for the final results to be decided and begins negotiations behind closed doors with the Liberal Party.

Regional Development Ministry at risk for Nationals By Ben Leahy If Brendon Grylls failed to retain the Regional Development and Lands portfolio, it would be viewed as a “backward step”, political analysts say. Mr Grylls and his Nationals Party are locked in negotiations with the Liberal Party as mystery surrounded the makeup of the next Government as late as Friday March 15. Having campaigned as the only party guaranteeing the future of the billion dollar Royalties for Regions program, analysts say it would be an embarrassing loss for the Nationals if they were removed from the portfolio controlling the program. Also at stake are the party’s $700m in election promises largely funded through Royalties for Regions.
www.thefrangipani.com.au
Regional Development Australia Pilbara In collaboration with Shire of Ashburton, Shire of Roebourne and Town of Port Hedland Has developed a draft
Dr Ian Cook, a senior lecturer in politics with Murdoch University, said the Nationals would have mixed feelings following the election.
State of the Environment Report 2013
“While they picked up more seats, it would be
seen as a backward step if they lose Regional Development,” Mr Cook said. Mr Cook said the only comparable ministry giving the Nationals access to the State’s purse strings would be Treasury, but that the Liberals would retain that for themselves. William Howe, a political blogger with independent media site Crikey, said he could only speculate on how the new cabinet would look, but that he expected the Liberals to play nice at first. “[Regional Development and Lands] and Agriculture are the two portfolios that [the Nationals] care about and they’ve got them now and it would be provocative to take it away from them,” Mr Howe said. “My suspicion is that Barnett would treat the Nationals pretty generously at first, but over time there will be other cabinet reshuffles. “I think he will be under pressure from his own party at each reshuffle to say you’ve given them too much you don’t need to be this generous to the Nationals.” Mr Howe said this would include pressuring Premier Barnett to take the Regional Development Ministry off the Nationals.
Despite this, Mr Howe said Mr Grylls remained in a strong position because whereas Liberal members ride the highs and lows of the Government in Perth, National members can present themselves as “pretty much independents”. “If George Levissianos got in, then Labor would have been able to spend the next four years pointing to a Perthcentric Barnett Government not interested in the Pilbara,” Mr Howe said. “But history shows these country rural independents – as the Nationals could paint themselves to be – are pretty much impossible to get rid of.” Mr Howe said this was partly the thinking in the North West seat where the Greens, probably in consultation with Labor, gave preferences to the Liberals ahead of the Nationals. “It was not only because they wanted revenge on Vince Catania, but also the feeling in the Labor Party was that if the Nationals win these seats, they’re there for life,” Mr Howe said. “But if the Liberals win they might be able to take them out in 2017. “So I think Brendon Grylls is going to be pretty much impossible to dislodge from here.”
You are invited to participate in a workshop to discuss the draft State of the Environment Report in the following areas: Karratha, Tom Price and South Hedland. These workshops will include: • Report Outline and Intent • Discussion of information presented • Local Government Perspectives Morning Tea and lunch will be provided.

Service workers accommodations too expensive for NGOs By Ben Leahy The Pilbara Association of Non Government Organisations has renewed calls for the faster release of affordable housing in the Pilbara. With Brendon Grylls elected to the Pilbara seat in last weekend’s State Election, PANGO chairperson Bob Neville said urgent action should be taken to provide affordable housing to NGOs, service workers, new workforce entrants and the homeless. “The service worker accommodation that has been recently made available in Hedland is not affordable for the majority of NGO workers,” Mr Neville said. “$866 [per week] for a three bed property and $666 for a two bed property is clearly not affordable for workers on an average wage of some $55,000 per year.” “For housing to be affordable the rent should be set at a maximum of 30 per cent of gross income, which would equate to $317 per week for an NGO worker on an average wage of $55,000
per year. “It should also be noted that NGOs cannot afford to subsidise these housing costs as there is currently no provision within current funding contracts for such subsidies”. PANGO argues that any service worker accommodation property in the Pilbara used by NGOs be instead transferred to the NGO Housing System. This would create a uniform rental rate that is currently set at $418 per week for a three bedroom home. PANGO is also calling for an increase in government funding to help NGO staff cope with the high cost and challenges of living and working in the Pilbara. “The Regional Price Index for the Pilbara is 37.1 per cent and this needs to be applied to all government funding contracts for NGOs operating in the Pilbara,” Mr Neville said. “For too long, services have been underfunded and this has greatly undermined the quality and sustainability of service delivery for the people of the Pilbara.”

Extra funding to commemorate the Centenary of Anzac in 2015 The Federal Member for Durack, Barry Haase, has welcomed additional federal funding to help commemorate the Centenary of Anzac in the North West in 2015. To mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War and the birth of the Anzac legend, the Federal
Government has provided $100,000 in funding per Federal electorate to support community-based commemorations. “The Centenary of Anzac will be the most significant national period of commemoration in our nation’s history,” Mr Haase said.
AUSTRALIAN FLUID HANDLING AND TECHFLOW JOINING FORCES
“Durack is the largest electorate in Australia, covering some 46 shires. “The division of the $100,000 grant will be decided by a committee, using the recently released funding guidelines to ensure the grant is used to it’s best advantage. Mr Haase said thousands of men from the Durack electorate fought in the First World War. “These Centenary of Anzac grants will
give communities the opportunity to honour service and sacrifice,” Mr Haase said. “There are many different ways this can be done – from traditional dawn services and marches of veterans, through to re-enactments of recruiting marches, school based education programs, refurbishing of memorials and honour boards and establishment of new places of commemoration and reflection.” A copy of the

Funding Guidelines outlining what can be financially supported under the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program is available from Mr Haase’s office or by calling 9964 2195. “I am pleased that community grants under this programme have been modelled on the highly successful Australia Remembers 1945-995 commemorations of the 50th anniversary or the end of World War Two,” Mr Haase said.

Easternwell COO, Darren Greer, said community groups looking for support to purchase equipment, to improve building facilities or to develop training programs are all examples of projects that will be looked upon favourably during assessment by the selection committee. “We are committed to assisting local community groups, clubs and associations to ensure we’re all working together to make our communities better,” he said. The Easternwell Community Grants awards $48,000 spread across two rounds assessed bi-annually. Applications are now open and eligible groups may apply for funding up to $2,000. Applications for round one must be received by the closing date April 5, 2013. Criteria and application forms can be found at www.easternwell. com.au/ourcommunity.
Financial Markets By Brenton Reynolds The Dow Jones Industrial Average surpassed its all-time high that was set in 2007 on Wednesday February 6, 2013, surging past 14,250, and finishing the week at 14,397. This was largely off the back of much stronger than expected
job growth with 236,000 jobs added in February and the unemployment rate falling to 7.7 per cent, the lowest in more than four years. After a shaky start to the week with the ASX200 having its largest one day fall on Monday, we still managed to close on Friday March 8 in the green with the index up 37 points (0.73 per cent) for the week.
Stock Tip of the Week Pancontinental Oil & Gas NL (PCL) – Speculative Buy Pancontinental Oil & Gas NL is a petroleum exploration company with key assets in Australia, Kenya, Malta and Namibia. PCL recently released an upgrade to the prospective resources on the L6 block in Kenya (PCL 40 per cent) following the interpretation of the 3D seismic acquired in 2012. There will be a raft of
activity over the next 12 to 18 months in Kenya and Namibia that could provide upside to Pancontinental, however, direct drilling will not commence until nearer the end of the year which is when we expect a material uplift in share price. We maintain our Speculative Buy recommendation, with a price target of 24cps.

Glamour and Greek Goddesses by Napoleon Perdis By Anita Smith I am a busy working mum with a make up routine in the morning that consists of a two minute slip-slop-slap, topped off with some lipstick. I envy the glitter and glamour likes of Kim Kardashian for their ever-so-perfect appearances and I’ve always wondered how they achieve that perfect look. Attending the Napoleon Perdis Cocktail and Canape Night, organised by Beauty in Vogue at the Lotteries House, opened all the doors to Hollywoods best-kept secrets in make up land. While we were treated with some wining and dining, the Make-Up Artists from the Napolean Perdis team showed us all the ins
and outs and tricks of the trade to make you look younger, skinnier, fresher and absolutely gorgeous. All with the latest products that boost quality, natural beauty and female empowerment. I never knew there were so many products to put on your face at once. Foundations, pore minimisers, mattifiers, concealers, finishes, blushing, eye-shadows, lip glosses, you name it and Napoleon has it covered. And the result it creates is amazing. The two models, gorgeous without makeup in their own right, were transformed from girl-next-door to glossy magazine cover models in no time. And the beauty of it all is that Napoleon
Perdis, although his name gives away his Greek background, is an Australian brand that has gained worldwide fame in the fashion world. So with a little bit of help and magic out of the Perdis collection and an extension in my morning routine, I too can look every bit the celebrity. How exciting is that?

Search on for vanishing vizslas By Ben Leahy A distressed Point Samson resident is call for help in finding her two missing Hungarian vizsla pooches after they disappeared from her backyard more than two weeks ago. Melinda Fritz believes her female vizsla Mali and male Boonie were stolen because there were no signs they had escaped her backyard by digging or through a hole. A door knock of Point Samson and subsequent missing notices posted in papers across the Pilbara, Gascoyne and in Broome, have also yielded no sign of the animals. Although expensive pedigrees, Melinda said the dogs were spade and had no resale value. “They are adorable, lovable pets – so I have no idea why someone would steal them except they are so friendly they would go with anyone,” Melinda said. She said Mali and Boonie were like members of her family. “They are my fur babies – they are more than dogs to me, they are my children,” she said. Burmese cat Bentley,

Women having trouble conceiving or grieving over the loss of a child can find support in a new group meeting every second Thursday at the Karratha Baptist Church. Dr Des Taverner and Tracie Jennings from the Karratha Baptist Church are organising the support group, which had its first meeting on Thursday March 14. Tracie said she has personally dealt with the pain of being unable to have children, while Dr Taverner has spent three years in the Nickol Bay Hospital emergency department and the obstetric and gynaecology units. “I am fortunate to be involved in some of the happiest moments of a
family’s life together, however, I am also in the front-line when things go wrong,” Dr Taverner said. “Having looked after a number of women, who have miscarried or been trying to conceive, I realised that most of these women were feeling very alone, unable to grieve fully or share their experiences in order to aid their healing. “A lot of women blame themselves unnecessarily.” Tracie and Dr Taverner said the group was the first in town to support women with infertility issues and encouraged any interested women to come along to the next meeting on March 28. Contact Tracie on 0432 298 036 for more details.

Health in focus for International Women’s Day By Ben Leahy Karratha health professionals put the spotlight on female wellness on International Women’s Day on March 8 with a variety of stalls at the Frank Butler Community Centre. The stalls covered topics, such as good nutrition and breast screens through to sexually transmitted infections and blood borne viruses. Tina Cheney, a nurse with the Department of Health, said STIs were a cause for concern in the Pilbara. She said The Country Health Service in Warambie Road provided free STI and blood borne virus checks and encouraged anyone concerned with their health to book an appointment between 8am and 4pm by calling 9143 2221. She said the tests were non-invasive and patients can send in photos of the infected area and swab themselves to provide samples for laboratory testing.
Electronic Stability Control can help reduce your chances of running off the road – the leading cause of serious injuries on country roads. ESC detects the moment your car begins to skid and starts applying individual brakes to individual wheels to help keep you in control. Gamex smashes records as entrants from around the nation compete for title
By Tamara Binamat A week of angling and social festivities kicked off last week for premier fishing tournament, Gamex. Held in Exmouth, Gamex featured many side events to complement the fishing competition. While the fishing teams were hard at work on the boat during the day, event organisers treated those on land to concerts, lunches, clinics, workshops, fashion parades and more. After a huge rock concert by Rose Tattoo on the Friday evening, registered competitors and spectators fronted up to the Exmouth Game Fishing Club on Saturday afternoon for the official Gamex briefing. The briefing featured talks from event organisers, photography specialists, fisheries and environmental groups. The briefing gave entrants a chance to go over the rules and meet the other teams. Teams came from as close as Coral Bay to as far as Hawaii and after the briefing was the chance to mingle, eat burgers and sink a cold one. Sunday marked the first official day of the competition
and competitors were away early in the morning, ready to wet theirs lines during the 8am-5pm timeframe allowed. At the first weigh-in at 6pm Sunday, whispers circulated about a “monster” that was tagged and released. The catch was believed to be a close-to-1,000-pound marlin. The first day was a success for most, a loss for some, but a great start to the competition for all. During the weigh-in guest filleting extraordinaire, Peter Anderton, displayed the best techniques for filleting a fish and how to care for knives. While the boys were off fishing, again, the ladies were treated to a luncheon hosted by famous Australian fashion designer Liz Davenport on Monday. For four hours, ladies mingled and talked fashion while celebrity chef Bart Beek demonstrated cooking and sparked appetites. On Monday afternoon, cadets were treated to a fishing clinic at the fishing club. Hosted by Steve and Jo Starling and Peter Pakula, cadets learnt the ins and outs of rigging and fishing. Throughout the week, fashion and high teas kept the ladies entertained, as Liz Davenport and her team held events every day such as high teas and cocktail hours. As we went to print, the results revealing Gamex’s winner was announced. Stay tuned until next week for the full tally and the overall winner! All photos by Tamara Binamat

Filleting, cooking and storing fish – By Tamara Binamat
“I always undercook and let the finishing process happen once it’s off the heat source,” Bart said.
Filleting professional Peter Anderton and celebrity chef Bart Beek were on hand at Gamex,to make the most of the catches coming in during the daily weighins.
from the professionals
“You can always cook it a bit longer, but you can’t go backwards. “And you should let the fish be the highlight of the dish.” Bart said his favourite way to cook fish at home is with a combination of butter and oil, pepper and lemon juice in the frypan.
Peter Anderton offered advice on knifing techniques, how to care for knives, the best ways to fillet any fish and how to care for the precious fillets.
“That to me is stunning,” he said.
Peter said filleting techniques are important to maximise the flesh you get off the fish and to take it off in such a way that presents well on the table.
“You just cook the fillet on the skin side for four minutes, almost cook it fully and turn it once.
“Fish are too valuable to not respect as much as you can,” explained Peter.
“I know when it’s on the plate it’s still slightly under, but by the time it gets to the table, it’s going to be spot on.”
“You then give it another 30 seconds of heat on the pan.
Peter said most people ruin their fillets by rushing the job.
Bart said to test if the fish is done you can poke a toothpick into the thickest part of the fillet and, if it goes through without resistance, it’s perfect.
“There’s two ways to do things – efficiently or effectively,” he said. “Efficient means making the best use of [the fish] or effective is being quick and you can’t always do both.
• Guest filleter Peter Anderton
Bart and Peter said eating a great meal of fish can start at the store when making your selection.
“If you get a good process it will be both effective and efficient.”
Some signs to look for that equate to fresh fish include nice, shiny skin, clear eyes that haven’t started to sink and become gelatinous, and a nice fat gut on a whole fish.
Peter said the key tools for filleting include sharp, stiff knives and a plan before cutting the fish. “A lot of fish are different, but if you understand how [the fish is] made up then you can take the flesh off more efficiently.
Fillets should be clear rather than white, but the colour depends on the type of fish.
“Think about it first, have the right tools and a comfortable workstation.” Now that the fillets are off, its time to cook them up.
If there’s a lot of water on the tray in the shop then it could be a sign water has started to leak from the fish.
Celebrity chef Bart Beek said he has the utmost respect for fish, and cooks in a way to do the produce justice.
It should smell of the ocean, not “fishy”.
And finally, if you don’t mind asking, smell the fish. • Celebrity chef Bart Beek

Liz Davenport presents a life of colour to Exmouth By Tamara Binamat
Iconic Australian fashion designer Liz Davenport was the host of a ladies luncheon at the Novotel in Exmouth during Gamex. For the ladies left on land while the fishing teams were out all day, celebrity chef Bart Beek presented cooking demonstrations and a three-course meal while Liz Davenport presented talks between courses. Local models paraded a collection Liz put together ON inspired by Exmouth and travelling on planes. Liz explained her love of fishing from an early age right LI’ alongside her love for fashion. Although she can wet a line with the best of them, Liz’s true passion lies in fabrics, colours IE’ and “multiplicity”. “Because we have Bart Beek with his wonderful meals, I likened the packing of a y suitcase to a recipe,” explained Liz. 2 brown dogs lost on 27/2/13 on “The wardrobe that I put SAMSON Road POINT SAMSON together was to be a wardrobe 0401 101 016 on 0400 323 481 or Paul on Female Hungarian Vizsla ‘MALI’ with a grey face. that you can wear anywhere in the world, whether Summer, Male Hungarian Vizsla ‘BOONIE’. incredibly valuable. “Then we have the very intricate detail of how to put the print with the plain to make the individuality and the personality and then we had the little highlights at the end which were the sweets.” Liz’s unique concepts include her “suitcase wardrobe” which is a combination of articles that will fit into a cabin-sized bag. “If you have 22 garments, you can fit 18 in the bag, you wear three and you put one in the overhead locker,” Liz said. She said this combination can create hundreds of outfits. “Something different twice a day for 30 days at least,” Liz said. “It’s a very clever wardrobing concept.” Kendall Gilmore from Exmouth, who helped model the outfit combinations said she enjoyed and learnt so much from Liz’s advice. “I really enjoyed understanding what you can do with clothing, I’ve always been Plain Jane and now I think [fashion] is amazing,” she said. “To be able to see how to put an outfit together and add this or take that is really amazing.” All Liz Davenport collections are available to purchase online at www.lizdavenport. com.au. As the stunning first townhouse release in the vibrant Jingarri community, every aspect of Avior is designed to welcome you, or your staff, home. This boutique collection of only 15 four-bed townhouses offers spacious indoor-outdoor living, inviting architecture and quality construction. Come home to a relaxed community that perfectly caters to the Karratha way of life.
judge Charlie Baggeta set to tour the region on March 26 for the Master Builders building excellence awards. Mr Baggetta has judged the awards for more than 12 years and said the standard in the Pilbara was excellent. While Mr Baggetta’s role as judge means he views only the best examples of building in the region, he said the remote location of the Pilbara and the increase in transportable houses had not detracted from the overall quality. Mr Baggetta also said the houses were not judged on their designs but on the quality of the construction. “It is not about the garden, … colour of the walls or some great furniture,” Mr Baggetta said.
Master Builders regional Manager Di
Gilleland said there were more entrants in this year’s awards. “There are a growing number of entries in commercial properties with many new builders entering the awards, which are great to see as they come with different ideas and styles being introduced for our industry. “Land too is plentiful with many new housing estates offering a multitude of choices, which is pleasing for our young first home buyers.” Winners will be announced at a dinner to be held at Zanders on Cable Beach in Broome on Saturday May 4.

“Sure, all that tops up the final result but if the quality is there in the construction phase, then from day on the home will certainly last and still look good in years to come.

Check that everything works before you buy First home-buyers and even those more experienced buyers can often forget to check whether all the mechanical equipment on a property works properly before they buy it.
It might be worth looking elsewhere for an investment property
Investment opportunities in regional property markets Most home buyers purchase homes in their local area where they are familiar with the property market. Similarly, investors also tend to stick to their local area when considering investment properties. This is a sensible approach because the property market can vary significantly from suburb to suburb and town to town, and locals are in an ideal position to assess the value and quality of properties for sale. However, it also makes sense for investors to keep an eye out for opportunities in areas further afield, in another part of town or even in a different part of the State.
Ultimately, the most influential factor affecting a property investment market is the combination of high population and economic growth.
regions.
Areas with strong local economies that generate plenty of employment are attractive to internal and overseas migrants, which boosts demand for rental accommodation.
As a result of this the property markets in these areas have grown rapidly in recent years.
This is why Perth is an ideal property investment market. However, there are also other locations in Western Australia that are worth considering for property investment. . For example, in the south-west of WA there are locations where the population growth is equal to the highest in Australia. This includes the Bunbury and Busselton and Margaret River
These areas are supported by strong local economies and boast attractive lifestyles.
Over the years, other parts of the State have also experienced strong economic growth coupled with high population growth, including the Albany region, the Goldfields and the Pilbara. Property values in regional markets are generally less than the non-metropolitan area property values. This means regional property markets may represent an affordable option for investors.

Buyers must remember that it is a term of every contract that the property, at settlement, will be in the same state and condition it was in immediately prior to the contract date. It makes sense therefore for the buyer to fully understand what is being purchased and to ask the real estate agent what items are not working. The REIWA Offer and Acceptance Form used by members has a section for buyers and sellers to agree to any special conditions. This might include representations that the plumbing and wiring be in safe working order. If a door, shower screen or window is broken, these are also matters you can negotiate be fixed by the owner before you settle, however, the seller has no obligation to do this and may not agree to repairs. If you add a special condition, be aware that it may jeopardise acceptance of your offer. The purpose of the pre-settlement inspection (not the final inspection), which takes place one week before settlement and not during the purchase transaction, is to check that the property is in the same condition as it was when last inspected by the buyer and not prior to the contract date. It is also to ensure that any special conditions have been satisfied. It is most important to remember that the purpose of a pre-settlement inspection is not to add new conditions or make requests of the seller for faults that existed at the time you made your offer. Therefore it’s important to check some of the more common things to inspect prior to entering into a contract might include: • The hot water system; learn how it works and whether it may need repairs. If it’s a solar hot water system

ask about the booster switch and where to locate it. • If the yard is reticulated, check that it works properly and ask to see where the sprinklers and solenoids, where they exist, are located. • Check that any air conditioning is running smoothly or that ceiling fans operate safely. • Where there is a swimming pool, look for any damage and become familiar with the pool cleaning equipment and filter. Ensure that the property has the required legal pool fencing. • Check that the plumbing and lights work by operating all the taps and switches and run any exhaust fans in the kitchen and toilet. • Test all the power points with a phone charger or hair dryer in each of the rooms. • Inspect all the water drainage outlets from the roof. Be confident the guttering is sound and find out where any soak wells are located. • If the property is on septic tanks for sewage, check that it works and locate the tanks. • Test the locks and latches on all doors and windows and make sure that curtains and blinds are secure and operational. After becoming familiar with the property you are then ready to make an informed decision on the purchase price. The price you offer may need to take into account items that you think will need replacement or repair in the future, but remember that in a tight sellers market the seller will be looking for the best offer and terms. interview DJ John on course to rock Hedland DJ John Course is set to get Hedland partiers moving once again with a packed set of upbeat house hits at the Pier Hotel on March 23. Drawing more than 500 dance music fans to his Hedland gig last year, John has been one of the country’s best known DJs for the past 20 years. He first broke out as the winner of the Victorian leg of the DMC DJ Championships and has since gone on to help pioneer house music in Australia and compile a bunch of hit Ministry of Sound releases. He has also set up his own label Vicious Recordings, which has unearthed artists like Avicii. This all means that John has a big bag of tricks and records to draw from in his quest to get partiers grooving, as the Pilbara Echo’s Ben Leahy found out.
What did you think of the Pilbara party vibe last year? Yeah it was a good night. I had never been there before, and I have to say everybody was pretty into having a big night. It’s always interesting hitting a town that has so many people from all corners of the country – I always run into somebody I know.
What is the best or most wacky praise you ever got from a fan? I was given a toy Santa Clause door bell from a crazy Melbourne girl once – she was bordering on being a stalker. Needless to say it didn’t get put on my door. But most people are pretty friendly and just have kind words to say about my tunes. If you don’t like the music, you don’t have to stay, so I guess if it’s the end of the night and they are still there any words will hopefully be pretty kind!
Why do you love house music? I love good music in general and good dance music to me sounds fresh, interesting and catchy and can uplift a crowd or change the entire mood of a club when played well. Plus you can dance to it.
What kind of set can we expect in Hedland? I always try to drop some old school tracks in with my new tunes so I am sure there will be a few in there from previous Ministry of Sound albums. I think I have mixed about 12 CDs for them so that’s a lot of classic tunes I can choose from!

Ibis Styles provide Guiness and clippers for St Pat’s Day By Ben Leahy If you must celebrate St Patrick’s Day by downing a Guiness and making a fool of yourself, then you might consider putting those antics towards a good cause this year. The Ibis Styles Karratha is celebrating the World’s Greatest Shave in tandem with St Patrick’s Day this Sunday March 17 with locals, like Pilbara Echo owner Alan Richardson, promising to shave their locks to raise money for cancer.
Karratha’s Spirit Radio will broadcast the event between 2 and 5pm, while the hairdressers from barber shop Notorious Cuts will be on hand with scissors and green dye. Venue manager Shane Lawrie said Ibis Styles had jumped on board for the Greatest Shave because the Leukaemia Foundation did not receive government funding. “Cancer is pretty much something that everyone at one stage of their life has to deal with, whether it is themselves, friends or family and we decided that we should really get on board,”
Shane said. Once the shaving is done, the Irish music will be turned up and patrons will be able to hit the Irish grub for $15 a plate. This includes a choice of Guinness and beef pie with side of fries, sausages and champ mash with eschalot gravy, black pudding pizza with shallots, capsicum and Guinness sauce and green chicken with broccoli and green herb sauce. More importantly, Guiness and Kilkenny cans are $8.50 each. A few cans in and you might not miss those fallen locks anymore..

New Chair to guide WA’s future a new Masters in Education (History) program at UWA designed specifically for school teachers to ensure that Western Australian history – with its unique regional character and culture – is showcased in the state education system. UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Johnson welcomed Wesfarmers’ generous gift, which he said would help meet a need recognised by governments across Australia for a national revival in the teaching of Australian history.
“An appreciation of Australian history is essential to an understanding of ourselves as Australians and our place in the world”
“An appreciation of Australian history is essential to an understanding of ourselves as Australians and our place in the world,” Professor Johnson said. Wesfarmers Managing Director Richard Goyder said the gift to the University in its centenary year would enable UWA to deliver leadership in the study and teaching of
Australian history at regional, national and international levels. Establishing the perpetual Chair at UWA would also enable greater focus on the study and teaching of Western Australian history, adding depth to the existing national curriculum. “Given much of Wesfarmers’ history is in Western Australia, this is an especially appropriate contribution as the University celebrates its centenary and as we approach our own Wesfarmers centenary in 2014,” Mr Goyder said. “The rigorous study of history is valuable in itself but it also provides an enormously important perspective to current economic, social and environmental debates.” The Dean of UWA’s Faculty of Arts, Winthrop Professor Krishna Sen, said WA was an economic leader in a time zone shared by 60 per cent of the world’s population and nations that promise the greatest economic growth in the 21st Century. “The new Chair will help provide decision-makers with critical analytical tools to tackle future challenges, guide public policy, meet environmental challenges and respond to the political, economic, social and cultural expectations of the state’s Indigenous and nonIndigenous peoples,” she said. The post will be advertised internationally at the end of March, with the aim of appointing a leading historian within 6 months.

Two organisations synonymous with the State’s economic and social development – Wesfarmers and The University of Western Australia – are joining forces in a new multi-million-dollar project to boost the study of Australian history at both tertiary and secondary levels. Wesfarmers announced on Tuesday a $5 million gift to establish a Professorial Chair in Australian History at UWA– the first such position fully privately-funded in Australia and the first Chair of Australian History in WA. UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Johnson hailed the announcement as “an act of great leadership in corporate philanthropy”, and Wesfarmers Managing Director Richard Goyder said the new academic position would help to “provide an enormously important perspective to current economic, social and environmental debates”. The Wesfarmers gift comes as UWA celebrates its Centenary and just one year before the former WA farmers’ cooperative – now one of Australia’s largest listed companies – celebrates its own 100-year milestone. The Professorial appointment will guide historical research from a West Australian perspective, promote academic and community interest in Australian history and help lead the development of public debate and policies on key issues affecting the nation’s future. The role will also develop

Flinders Mines has made a significant step toward making its Pilbara mining project a reality, with a spate of new contracts recently signed with Chinese steel mills. In a statement released last week Flinders said it had secured a binding, non-exclusive memorandum of understanding with four Chinese mills. The agreements will allow the Chinese entities to take a closer look at ore from Flinders to see if it’s a match for their iron making operations. Flinders said it expected the agreements would ultimately lead to letters of intent from a number of Chinese customers. “To date, the Flinders marketing team has engaged with over 30 Chinese steel mills and

Angel of Cuisine When embarking on a new healthy eating program, most people can usually find their way to getting the main meals right but fall down a little on snacks. I think one of the keys to being successful is “Super Snacking”. Snacks shouldn’t be prepackaged bars or low-fat muffins; they should be like mini meals with the perfect balance of fats, protein and carbohydrates. It’s not always easy to get it right, especially if you are on the run, but once you start to change your thinking it gets easier. Think fresh food, whole food, as unprocessed as possible and easy to manage on the run. Super Snack ideas can be a mix of fruit, yoghurt, lean cold meats, nuts, seeds and vegetables. A small salad sprinkled with a few nuts and seeds is a great
snack; or fresh fruit with yoghurt mixed with a good quality protein powder. Leftover protein from last night’s dinner, eggs, steak and fish all make great snacks by adding a few other fresh ingredients. The key is to eat every few hours and to eat mini meals. Spread the quantity of your three main meals across six smaller meals for the day and you are off to a great start. Have a healthy week!

Karratha swim team takes on country WA’s best By Ben Leahy
• Emily, Abby, Stevie and Jasmine from the under 10’s relay team
Karratha’s swim team achieved mixed results after taking a smaller squad to the Annual Country Pennants Championships for Western Australia held at Wongan Hills on March 2 and 3. Despite the 24-person team achieving 35 personal best times over 77 swims, it was not enough to hold their position in the A-Grade competition. Instead, Karratha will next year compete in B-Grade after being pipped by teams from the strong regional centres of Albany, Bunbury, Peel, Mandurah and Narrogin – many of which fielded teams of up to 80 swimmers. It marked the end to Karratha’s three-year run in A-Grade after winning the Country Pennant’s B-Grade competition in 2010.
The mixed results were more than made up for by a great atmosphere on the day though. Karratha swim club members said the friendliness of the people in Wongan Hills is evident in the fact it has highest rate of volunteers for a Western Australian town and the second highest in the nation. Among Karratha swimmers, Macie Bennetts performed exceptionally
well. She swam the fourth fastest 100m butterfly lap of any woman at the meet, which gave her a gold medal in her age division. Darcy Gray also came home with two bronze medals, while Emily Kruger picked up two silvers. The next WA Country Pennants championships will be hosted by the town of York on the 2014 March long weekend.

Sailfish among the early species hooked in Gamex Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report
By Jenni Gates
billfish raised, 53 hooked and 28 tagged. In the capture sections, there were golden trevally, mack tuna, long tail tuna, spangled emperor and queenfish. Outstanding captures included a 5.8kg queenfish on 3kg line by junior angler Trent Gregory. The Aqua Tank is loaded with salt water and has trevally, whiting, salmon and tusk fish swimming inside. Special guests Dave Hodge (the barefoot fisherman) and Guy woods are here to show everyone how lures work in the water and how fish react to lures. It’s a great viewing platform and kids (little and big kids) love it. Anyone is welcome to come down to the clubhouse and see the shows on the Aqua Tank, which start each day at around 4pm. Peter Anderton will be giving filleting
demonstrations as well and you may even be able to pick up some fresh fish to take home for free! The last day of fishing is Friday, and they expect Friday night to have many people at the clubhouse to see final fish brought in and tag cards recorded. Pictured this week is angler Grant Dolan accompanied by his wife Jodie and son Liam from Perth. The pic was taken just before Gamx on board the new On Strike II during its maiden voyage in Exmouth. The black marlin is estimated to be 100kg and was caught in 380m of water where the temperature was 300. The fish was caught on 37kg line and it took just ten minutes to have the fish boatside for a tag shot. The fish was brought aboard for a quick photo before being released.

The town is buzzing with excitement as anglers, partners, families and friends return for Gamex 2013. This year started with a roaring Friday night social gig with Angry Anderson and Rose Tattoo rocking at the clubhouse. Saturday was the briefing and around 350 people converged on the clubhouse to collect final details and information bags prior to the start of the event.
There are 75 boats this year with the majority targeting the tag and release sections. The fine skills required to target the capture sections can be challenging and interestingly there are more boats this year targeting fish for capture. The tournament began at 8am Sunday morning and by 8:13am Leigh Freestone from team Pelagic Hooker had tagged the first sailfish. At 8:30am another sailfish was tagged on team Blue Horizon. At 9am a black marlin estimated at 250kg was tagged by Mick Callan on Sunride. The morning bite continued with another 12 fish including a 200kg black marlin on Alure and a 350kg blue marlin on Mahi Mahi II. By the end of the day there were 77

Grand Master Seng instructs ATA Hedland members Local junior black belts would have given Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan a run for their money last weekend as the ATA Hedland Taekwondo Club Black hosted a belt boot camp led by 8th dan Grand Master Kim Seng. Locks, grabs, jumping and spinning kicks were flying around the St Cecelia Hall as black belts and red belts learnt new techniques and revised the basics. Master Seng is the Grand Master of the Australian Taekwondo Academy in Western Australia. He is also renowned within the International Taekwondo Federation with whom he travels around the world to referee at taekwondo competitions.
Registrations closing for JK Basketball Carnival By Ben Leahy Pilbara basketball players looking to participate in this year’s edition of the popular James Kelly Basketball Carnival in Hedland need to dust of their Air Jordans and Pumps and get their team nomination in before March 22. Held in memory of talented footy and basketball player James Kelly, the tournament started in Perth just under a decade ago but has since moved to Port Hedland over the last three years to be closer to James’ family. Like the tournament in his name, James was passionate about basketball and well known for travelling to play in competitions right across the North West. Chrissie Black, James’ sister and JK Carnival organiser, said the event had become close to the
Hedland club president Tim Turner said, “The weekend was excellent, we have an exciting club, our junior instructors were impressive, and it is always a privilege to have someone of Kim Seng’s calibre spend time with our students”.
hearts of many. “Even though it is my brother’s memorial, I look at it as an event for the community and family coming together because over the year’s we’ve all had our share of sadness through funerals and deaths,” Chrissie said. “The event has been so popular, you would be surprised – it is a really good turnout.” Chrissie said nine teams had nominated for the men’s division, five for the women’s and one for the under 16s at the time this paper went to print. However, she said spots were filling up fast and she expects to see at least 16 men’s and 10 women’s teams compete. Teams also need to pay the $150 tournament fee by March 22 to be registered. So bounce to it.
The weekend focused on teaching the junior black belts how to be effective communicators and how to breakdown the movements needed to teach good taekwondo technique to others. “It is an exciting time for the club, which has over 70 active members and is focused upon the State championships in August followed by the nationals in Brisbane later in the year,” Tim said.
• Tyson Archer puts a lock on Tore
Tim said that with the focus on the State and national competitions, the club was aiming to bring Master Seng to Hedland more often this year so club members have the skills to compete at an “international level”. For training times and details please contact club secretary Petula Riches on 0412 686 054.

Muay Thai classes kick off at Entertainment Centre By Ben Leahy Whether you are looking to pack more power into your kicks or elbow strikes or you simply want to keep fit, Muay Thai classes could be for you. Having previously been held at Life and Soul Health and Fitness Club, the classes now begin at 7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Karratha Entertainment Centre and run for an hour and a half. Instructor James Mertens said he is getting a lot of positive feedback from men and women in the classes “It is good to have something in the community like this because there isn’t really anything like it around,” James said. “It teaches you fitness and discipline … and I love it, I find it fun and I’m addicted to it.” James and fellow instructor Adam Beirl also teach you how to fight using traditional Muay Thai techniques. James said he has been learning Muay Thai for the past year and a half, while Adam has practised the martial art for more than 10-years and fought competitively in Australia. James said they only let advanced students spar with each other and that a couple of the club’s members were hoping to fight in their first amateur bout in Perth towards the end of the year. In the meantime, beginners are also welcome to attend by phoning James on 0427 090 889.

Karratha’s Kobi Lowicki and Zane Rigby are $2,000 closer to touring to Dubai and Hong Kong in April as part of the Baseball WA Little League squad thanks to local exercise enthusiasts. The indoor cyclists got together at Life and Soul Health and Fitness Club on March 10 to peddle away in a fundraiser for Kobi and Zane’s trip. Life and Soul donated the venue and the instructors their time free of charge, allowing $670 to be raised on the day for a total of $2,000, including funds from last year’s spin class. Among those that turned up on the day, special mention should be given to the three riders who managed to cycle for the full two hours with instructors Trish Kiehe, Jen Hill and Fran Minchin. Kobi and Zane’s families would also like to thank everyone involved for their support.

Karratha board-rider skates to State title win By Ben Leahy Karratha resident Manunui Tito is a kick-flip closer to his dream of becoming a professional skateboarder after winning a State competition in Perth on March 1. The nine-year-old Pegs Creek Primary student battled through three grand final heats and past 17 other skaters to claim top spot in the under 11 division of the YMCA Drug Aware Skate Series State Final. Mana, as Manunui is better known, had virtually grown up on a skateboard as a successful junior in his native New Zealand, but mum Heidi McNamara said this was the biggest tournament he had won to date. She said she had originally taken Mana down to Perth for the qualifying round in January to teach him a lesson about big fish in small ponds. “We were trying to show him that he had a long way to go to be a pro – because that is what he wants to be is a pro,” Heidi said. “Especially when he was in New Zealand, he used to win all the competitions and he had to look

further afield to Sydney and America to Perth.” Yet after completely surprising everyone with his victory, Mana and his parents might have to soon look to even bigger ponds. And Heidi is more convinced Mana can do it because of how hard he worked before the tournament. She said Mana had practiced his tricks continuously to make sure they were just right. “Even in the professional skaters they will also tell you that sometimes you go through times with low inspiration practicising the same trick in the same skate park over and over again,” she said. And if being the best under 11 skateboarder in the State is not enough inspiration to keep Mana practicing hard, he can also look to professional skateboarder Trevor Ward. Trevor grew up in Paraburdoo skating on homemade ramps in his backyard before making the big time. Could Mana one day be the next Pilbara pro?
