The Department of Environment and Conservation received reports on Wednesday that a three-metre saltwater crocidle was sighted inside the lagoon area of Ningaloo Marine Park. The DEC issued a warning for people to exercise extreme caution in the area. The saltwater crocodile was seen within 15 metres of the shoreline just to the north of Pelican Point near Waroora Station. DEC Exmouth district manager Arvid Hogstrom said public safety was a priority but people should not panic. “DEC has arranged aerial surveillance in order to confirm the sighting and monitor the crocodile’s activity where possible, so we can advise people where they may need to take precautions,” he said. “With Easter coming up the Ningaloo coast is full of holidaymakers and our focus is on warning people of the potential danger while we try to confirm and locate the animal. “If and when we find it, we will assess the situation and determine whether the crocodile can be trapped and relocated.”

“With Easter coming up the Ningaloo coast is full of holidaymakers and our focus is on warning people of the potential danger while we try to confirm and locate the animal.” DEC is liaising with local police, local government and tourist operators, and public warnings will be erected to ensure residents and visitors are aware of the crocodile report. Saltwater crocodiles live in coastal

rivers and swamps and often occur in the open sea and around islands. They may also extend well inland along major rivers, floodplain billabongs and into freshwater rivers, creeks and swamps. The normal distribution of saltwater crocodiles in Western Australia is from near Onslow, about 100 kilometres north of Ningaloo, up the coast to the Northern Territory border. Most are found along the Kimberley coast. Saltwater and freshwater crocodiles are protected under the Wildlife Conservation Act 1950 and may not be killed or taken from the wild without a licence. If the crocodile reported in the marine park is determined to pose a threat to the community, DEC will remove it, or, if there is no other option, euthanase it. Sightings of saltwater crocodiles should be reported to the DEC Exmouth District Office on 9947 8000 or Duty Officer number on 9182 2088. Crocodile sightings are recorded and assessed on a case-by-case basis for further actions by DEC staff.

Mr Hogstrom said though rare, saltwater crocodile sightings this far south had occurred before. “The last time we saw a saltwater crocodile in this area was at Coral Bay in 2009, and it is important that people take care on the beach and do not swim in the vicinity of the reptile,” he said.

A man arrived at the roadhouse with the baby boy who was not breathing. The child had been reported missing earlier that same day by family members at an address in Broome. The child was collected from Broome by a man known to the child’s mother, the same man that brought the child to Fortescue Roadhouse. The man is assisting police with their enquiries.

A truck driver from Karratha said he attempted to pull into Fortescue Roadhouse about 2:30pm when he was met with blocked off entrances and barricades around the bowsers. “Something big had happened,” the truck driver said. The truck driver said he was moved on quickly. The Major investigating.

DRINKING WATER Desert Rose plant destruction Save money using reverse osmosis to purify your own tap water and cut out the high costs of bottled water delivery!

I was [recently] admiring how lovely the Desert Rose in the front of my garden was looking the other day. Everyone in our street admires it.

✓ Delicious rainwater quality

(takes out all the calcium) ✓ Self contained refrigerated coolers ✓ No bottles - never run out of water again ✓ Cold & room temperature taps ✓ Less than $2.15 per day for all the water your family can drink ✓ Hot & cold machines for your office ✓ Free installation

✓ Free servicing

The next day when I saw it, I had to cry! The Desert Rose has been in my garden for approximately 15 years. What sort of person has come along and used an electric saw, cutting the branches at the lower part of the plant and damaging it? It was damaged between Wednesday March 6 and Thursday March 7 in Baynton. It now has a risk of dying. From the way the plant has been cut (on an angle) it appears that someone knows about these plants and wants to propagate them. If you wanted cuttings I would have gladly given you some. Plants are grown for every person to admire and enjoy, not to destroy. I guess the person who took the plants knows they are poisonous. This matter has been reported to the police. By Ben Leahy

BHP Billiton Iron Ore has been fined $130,000 over the death of one of its mining workers in Port Hedland in 2008.

The Perth Magistrates Court found that BHP failed to provide a safe working environment after worker Andrew McLaughlin was crushed to death by a scissor lift. The court heard that Mr McLaughlin acted dangerously by putting his body into the descent path of a scissor lift when the bar was not in place. But magistrate Peter Malone said Mr McLaughlin did so because BHP had not put him through adequate job hazard assessments or ensured he was properly supervised.

Department of Mines and Petroleum Resources safety executive director Simon Ridge said this case highlighted the importance of safety at WA mines. “One death is one too many – we want every mining worker out there returning to their family and friends safe and sound at the end of their rosters,” Mr Ridge said.

“This successful prosecution should send a strong warning to mining companies across the State. “While the majority of mining operators in WA operate to high safety standards, the department will hold those who aren’t doing the right thing to account.”

Under the sentence, BHP was required to pay $300,000 in legal costs on top of the $130,000 fine.

Land owners are set to face a six per cent increase in property rates in the 2013-14 financial year, after already being hit by a seven per cent rise this financial year. The six per cent increase will affect residential and commercial properties in the Shire and will ensure that all ratepayers pay a minimum of $1,300 regardless of their property value. Members of the public now have up until June to make submissions to the Shire about the 2013-14 rate rise, which will then be considered by councillors at the June council meeting. Shire or Roebourne chief executive officer Chris Adams said the rate rise would help meet the Shire’s need for greater revenue. “Every year there is pressure on the Shire to provide more services and better infrastructure, particularly with the level of growth we have seen recently,” Mr Adams said.

“A six per cent rate increase will give us the funds that we need to deliver the services that our community has told us they want and need.” “We have proposed some larger increases for a few categories of property and we have written to those owners who will be affected to seek their feedback on the proposed model.” Although most property owners will see rises of six per cent, some categories, mainly those dealing with undeveloped lots, will see larger rises under the proposed model. The Shire said the rate rise is in line with the Council’s Draft Long Term Plan 2012/13 – 2021/22. In other financial news at the Shire, budget officers have found more than $3m in savings to be spent on footpaths, road reseals and debt repayments. The Shire said it had found $3.8m in savings in its second budget review this financial year, which comes on top of the $3.3m it found in its first review last November.

Shire of Roebourne president Fiona White-Hartig said the savings will deliver $400,000 of new footpaths and $250,000 in road reseals before the end of June. “For the last few years now, footpaths and local roads have come up as high priorities in the community survey,” Ms White-Hartig said. “The recent road reseals that we’ve done in Dampier have been hugely popular in the community and we’ll be using these extra funds to enhance some of the older roads in other areas.” Shire CEO Chris Adams also said that paying down debt would enable the Shire to take future loans at more attractive interest rates. “The Shire generally always has some loans on the books and this process will give us more capacity to borrow for some of the larger infrastructure projects we have planned like the Airport Terminal Upgrade,” Mr Adams said.

New Member for the Pilbara Brendon Grylls has retained his Regional Development and Lands portfolio as The Nationals look to cement their rising popularity in regional Western Australia. spending in which up to a quarter of the program’s $1bn funding is allocated to the Pilbara. Mr Grylls said it had been “critical” he retain the portfolio. “It was obviously critically important,” Mr Grylls said. “There was speculation [that it might be taken away by the Liberal Party] but I never felt that was at risk and it wasn’t.” Royalties for Regions had been central to The Nationals’ election campaign with Mr Grylls appearing on a long running series of television advertisements designed to

position himself as the face of the popular program. But with the Liberal Party winning enough seats in this election to govern in their own right, there was uncertainty over whether Mr Grylls would retain ministerial control of the program. Premier Barnett even flagged changes to Royalties for Regions shortly after the election by suggesting it would be spent on less sexy projects, such as basic infrastructure. However, Mr Grylls insisted that, despite The Nationals holding fewer bargaining

chips for this term of government, they would still be able to deliver on their promises to the Pilbara and other regions. “Every single dollar of Royalties for Regions spending has been passed by the cabinet and signed off by the Premier and that will continue [in this term of government],” Mr Grylls said. “As the Premier said, I don’t think we are too far apart on where we see the program heading and that will be something that the government and new ministers decide from project to project.”

Craig travels to idyllic places such as Mexico, Hawaii and the Great Barrier Reef. “All I do is paint sport fish around the world,” Craig said. “Three years ago I came across to Exmouth and had so much fun. “It’s still one of the last really good social tournaments.” A lot of the artwork on the Gamex competition shirts was designed from Craig’s paintings. The awards encourage local artists to capture what life is like living and working in the Pilbara and outback Western Australia. Artist Renee Young was the winner in this year’s main themed category, ‘From little things, big things grow’, with her painting of a vast Kimberley landscape. Other award winning entries included Tanya Montgomery’s sculpture in homage of her mother and Marinda van Der Walt’s

Jen Horquebie from Achipelago Arts said the high quality of this year’s entries meant she had a tough job judging the winners. “There was really nice variety across the different styles and the different themes and concepts that people used,” Jen said. “What I was looking for was quality in the technique and paint applications and just a bit of a spark – so something that stood out in composition.” This year’s awards are the second time the Dampier Community Association has held the event, after it successfully launched the competition in 2010. Winners in the 2013 awards were honoured at a cocktail night on March 16 in which Cuban musician Eliezer Aquila entertained the crowd.

INVEST IN KARRATHA’S ONLY HIGH-RISE LUXURY DEVELOPMENT

Members of the Dampier Mankini Qajaq (Kayak) Club are deep in preparations for their inaugural kayak expedition from Coral Bay to the Exmouth Lighthouse next month. The team will attempt to keep an even keel as they paddle a distance of approximately 180km over five days, beginning in Coral Bay on April 15, 2013. Club president Richo said the guys will make the paddle in their lime green mankinis to raise funds for the Kids Cancer Support Group at Ward 3B at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Perth.

ONL Y 20 1 AVA IL AB6 LE LIM RELE ITED ASE!

The KCSG was founded in 1983 to provide support for young cancer patients and their parents. “We’re seeking corporate sponsors of our upcoming paddle in the form of a donation made payable to the KCSG,” Richo said. “With four weeks to go until they bare their cheeks to the world and set off on the paddle, Richo said they had stepped up training to a grueling two paddles a month. “There’s no doubt our expedition will be arduous,” Richo said. “We’re likely to face all sorts of challenges over the five-day journey. “Overzealous French backpackers, mankinis riding uncomfortably high, warm beer. “But one of our most significant challenges is likely to be ear chafe from listening to recycled jokes and stories again and again.” Club first aid officer Big Dan also identified the sun as a big challenge. “Our fitted slivers of lime green won’t do much to help protect us from UV,” Big Dan said. “We’re currently seeking in kind support from Australian sunscreen manufacturers. “Without their support, we’re likely to go through wheelbarrows full of the stuff.” If you’d like to learn a more about the DMQC, you can view a short feature film prepared by ABC Open producer for the Pilbara Paul Bray at https://open.abc.net.au/posts/movies-inmankinis- 03db1fo. “The level of interest shown in the film to date was unprecedented and has resulted in an increase in membership of 33 per cent,” Club homework manager Kev said.

JEWELLERY MAKING WORKSHOP Calling all creative and inventive members of the community to join local artist Carrie McDowell in creating and learning how to make beautiful jewellery.

• St Luke’s market day was a huge success

Hundreds turnout to St Luke’s market day By Tom Kavanagh The St Luke’s College Performing Arts Centre was bursting at the seams on Saturday March 16 with hundreds of people attending the school’s inaugural Market Day. Organised by the Friends of St Luke’s and coordinated by Lorraine Marshall, the event enabled visitors to shop and snack at 30 craft and food stalls and participate in classroom activities. The stalls had

everything from second-hand books and honey to ornaments, clothing and candle products. Drama teacher and drum beat specialist Jez Obern held one of the more popular events of the day when he conducted parents and children in a series of drumming sessions. It was captivating to watch three-year-old children experience the sounds of a thunderstorm in the form of beats on a drum.

In the science labs, teachers and students conducted experiments and physics applications for passers-by, while the Design and Technology teachers took young people through the process of making sticker signs and the Mathematics staff created challenges for unsuspecting parents. The Friends of St Luke’s organised the market day to raise money for new equipment around the school.

Little Pied Cormorant The Little Pied Cormorant, Little Shag (Microcarbo melanoleucos) is a common Australasian water bird, found around the coasts, islands, estuaries and inland waters of Australia. It is a small short-billed cormorant usually black above and white below with a yellow bill and small crest. The species is known as the Little Pied Cormorant in Australia, and as the Little Shag or by the Maori name of Kawaupaka in New Zealand. The Little Pied Cormorant is small, measuring 56–58cm with a shorter 3cm bill and longer tail than the Little Black Cormorant; it has a small black crest. The pied form is glossy black above with white face, under parts and thighs. The bill and bare skin around the face are yellow.

In both forms the legs and feet are black. The pied form is rare in New Zealand, and is most common in the North, where it makes up one in every four birds or so. Chicks have dark brown down, with pied morph having patches of paler down. Immature birds are a dull blackish brown, with pied morph birds having paler under parts. The Little Pied Cormorant makes a low cooing during courtship. The species ranges across New Zealand, from Stewart Island to Northland, and across mainland Australia (although not in the arid interior of the west of the country) and Tasmania and Indonesia. Widespread and common, it lives near bodies of water such as swamps, lakes, lagoons, estuaries

from Red-Billed Gulls. Breeding occurs once a year in spring or early summer in southern areas of its range (southern Australia and New Zealand), and after the monsoon in tropical regions. The nest is a platform built of branches and sticks, often still green with leaves in the forks of trees, usually eucalypts that are standing in water. Nests are often located near other water birds such as other cormorants, herons, ibis or spoonbills. Four or five pale blue oval eggs measuring 46 x 31mm are laid. The eggs are covered with a thin layer of lime, giving them a matte white-coated appearance. They become increasingly stained with feces, as does the nest, over the duration of the breeding season.

and the coastline. The Little Pied Cormorant is a benthic feeder. It is a solitary feeder, normally diving in relatively shallow water, often near the shore. Dive times are short, around 15 to 20 seconds, with recovery times on the surface of 5 to 10 seconds unless prey is being swallowed. It takes a variety of fish prey but an unusually high proportion (nearly 30 per cent by weight on average, and up to 80 per cent in some individuals) of crustaceans. Eels and insect larvae are also consumed. These are brought to the surface to be swallowed; the bird will sometimes put a fish down on the surface of the water in order to re-orient it and swallow it head first. Because of this habit, they sometimes get their food stolen

By Brenton Reynolds It was a tough week in local equity markets as weakness in the miners saw the ASX 200 drop 11 points for the week, despite rallying 88 points (1.75 per cent) on Friday March 3. The rally on Friday was

the largest single one-day rise since July 19, 2012. Total employment for February was up by 71,500 jobs, which is the strongest monthly gain in employment in Australia for the last 12 and a half years. US markets had another solid week, as recent

Dancing her way through LA Got News? Ovation’s principal tap teacher Leah Nagy has just returned to Karratha after a week of dancing with worldrenowned choreographers at the prestigious Millennium Dance Complex in Los Angeles. The Millennium Dance Complex in north of Hollywood is known as the premiere commercial dance studio in the world with a faculty of highly sought after dancers and choreographers. Leah attended advanced classes in tap and contemporary dance. Millennium requires students undertaking these professional level classes to have a minimum of 15 years intensive dance training. The highlight of the week was Advanced Contemporary with esteemed choreographer Tokyo. The class, considered the most elite that Millennium offers, comprised 30 dancers from around the world with live music by American composer Drehz and his band. Leah danced alongside top eight So You Think You Can Dance USA finalists Mollee Gray and Ade Obayomi, who are both professional, working contemporary dancers and regulars at Tokyo’s Millennium classes. “The level of dance at Millennium

was outstanding and absolutely world class,” Leah said. “Tokyo’s method of teaching contemporary dance and the way he relates dance movement to life is so inspirational.” “It was a privilege to dance his work.” Dancing with professional rhythmic tapper Kristie Betz was also a highlight. Kristie, having performed all over the United States, provided invaluable teaching in a complicated style of tapping known as rhythmic, that is currently rare in Australia. Leah and principal ballet teacher Megan Wood-Hill look forward to joining forces to relay this elite training back to the ballet, contemporary and tap students at Ovation in Karratha. In recognition of her work here, Leah was also invited to attend the first CSTD Modern Jazz Teachers Workshop in Perth. She was in the company of Western Australia’s most elite CSTD teachers and examiners. The workshop was run by syllabus creator Rachelle Conroy and covered all 10 grades of Modern Jazz from Pre-Modern to Grade 8.

The Pilbara Poet

“Attending the workshop with Rachelle was an invaluable experience and will enable us to provide the highest standard of teaching possible to Ovation students.” Ovation students will participate in CSTD examinations in jazz and tap this August as well as the WA state competitions in July. Naked noggins By Ben Leahy St Patrick’s Day turned into shearing season at the Ibis Styles Hotel in Karratha as around 20 locals lost their locks in support of cancer. With barbers from Notorious Cuts brandishing the clippers, volunteers didn’t just shave their heads as part of the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave event but had intricate designs cut into their hair. goose – cut into his noggin. And he’ll be looking like a goose for some time to come. With Ibis Styles having raised more than $10,000 from the event, Shane now has to honour his earlier promise to keep the haircut for one month. “I was in the shops the other day and someone said, ‘Hey it’s Gooseman’,” Shane said. “And I thought, ‘Oh good, I’ve got a month of this ahead’.” Pilbara Echo owner Alan Richardson also stepped into the barber’s chair for a fancy do.

He had a gecko – his company’s logo – shaved onto his scalp, which was then fashionably set-off at the back by a long mullet tuft. Local resident Lorraine Rasmussen went for a more conventional all round shave but was a star performer in the fundraising stakes, individually collecting more than $2,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation. Money raised in the event helps the Leukaemia Foundation support blood cancer patients and their families.

Karratha mother Kym Mensforth shaved all her hair off last Thursday night to support the Leaukameia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave. Kym raised over $10,000 in the process, and she has a special reason behind her motivation to help. Kym lost her mother to leukemia when she was 6-years-old. “The money that we raise goes to helping families of sick people,” explained Kym. “If the money that I have raised can go to helping a little girl spend an awesome couple of days with her mum so she’s got these amazing memories of her mother, well that’s my motivation.” “There’s people that are donating money that I’ve never met – it’s phenomenal and so generous.” About 25 spectators turned up to watch Kym’s long locks hit the floor. “[The event] was brilliant; everyone was really supportive and it was fun,” Kym said.

Western Australian secondary school students can celebrate our natural environment by participating in a Conservation Volunteers Australia photography competition closing this Monday March 25. The Earth Assist – Wild West Australia competition is part of National Youth Week from April 5 to 14 and has four categories: Fauna, Flora, Landscape and Water. Students are asked to take photos that celebrate and reinterpret the “Wild” of Western Australia. The Rio Tinto Community Investment Fund in partnership with the Department of Education and the Department of Environment and Conservation is supporting the competition. Steve Pearce the program manager for Conservation Volunteers Australia said the competition allowed students to see WA’s natural environment in a new way. “In many cases real change comes about through looking at things afresh, from a different perspective; providing an opportunity to reinterpret what was once either not seen or taken for granted”, Mr Pearce said. More information and entry forms visit www.earthassist. org.au.

When I have a busy day ahead of me, I will make something like this the night before. Then I can reheat it in the oven in the morning or eat cold just as it is for breakfast. It’s also great for lunchboxes or picnics and is a healthy morning or afternoon tea. My kids love it and I have to fight to save a piece for myself. 410g peach slices in juice 1 cup wholemeal flour 1 egg 2 tablespoons honey ½ cup chopped pecans ¼ tsp vanilla extract Drain peaches and save the juice to use. Combine everything except the peach slices in a bowl, including the peach juice. Mix together to form a nice smooth batter. Place in a non-stick baking dish and top with thinly sliced peaches I like to slice my thinner than they come in the tin. Cook in a 180-degree oven for 30 minutes. It’s simply perfect on its own or serve with a dollop of honeyed light ricotta.

Consumers still lack confidence in housing

Published by: Pilbara Newspapers Pty Ltd Shop 2 / 18 Hedland Place

Housing finance figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics suggest improved consumer confidence is failing to translate to the housing market.

Peter Jones, Master Builders Australia’s Chief Economist said the figures hardly suggest a recovery in the housing market, despite some positives for builders in the latest release. “Loans for the construction of dwellings and for the purchase of new dwellings combined rose 0.6 per cent from December 2012 to January 2013,” Mr Jones said.

“This is an increase of 9.3 per cent from the corresponding figure in January 2012. “Consumers remain overly cautious about committing to a significant purchase like housing. “The industry is hoping the rise in consumer confidence will quickly translate into the new housing market. “Consumer confidence will need to translate into increased spending on housing if the industry is to enter a sustained recovery capable of driving

From donga to designer – new state of the art FIFO accommodation opens in Wickham

Business This is a well established business operated by two people, supplying specialised retail shops in the Perth metro and local areas For further information please contact owners on 0429 846 504

Rio Tinto employees started the move into new architecturally designed FIFO accommodation situated in the town of Wickham on Monday. The accomodation services the expanding Cape Lambert port operations in the Pilbara. The first 37 employees moved into the 155-room Cajuput Villa facility with the remainder scheduled to move in by late April. The building was named after its street location, and the ‘cajuput’ is a native tree of the melaleuca family. The facility comprises two L shaped buildings that are two and three storeys high surrounding a landscaped central courtyard area. The $40 million facility is designed for a permanent 40+ year life span. Rio Tinto general manager Accommodation & Towns Management Andrew Wildy said the new facility is the first new accommodation development to be opened at Wickham as part of the nearby port and rail expansions at Cape Lambert. “The villas are setting new standards in Wickham and the Pilbara for both community integration and workforce accommodation, particularly with larger rooms and amenities that are not available in a traditional FIFO village,” he said.

“It’s better than I expected with a permanent feel you don’t get from the donga style of accommodation,” Paul said. “It has more living options and the room is designed like a hotel with different areas to sit – often you have to live off the bed but here we have a couch and an outdoor setting.” Cajuput Villas also contain the first lifts in Wickham, and 10 disabled rooms. The Julutharndu Maya building is currently under construction and is due for completion in 2013.

It will house a large cafeteria, bar, transit lounge and other facilities for FIFO employees and local residents in Wickham. The new Cajuput residents in the meantime will utilise the existing mess facilities until Julutharndu Maya is completed. This project is part of the Robe River Iron Associates joint venture consisting of Rio Tinto (53 per cent), Mitsui (33 per cent), and Nippon Steel Sumitomo Metal Industries (14 per cent). Robe River Iron Associates is the world’s fourth largest seaborne supplier of iron ore and operates three open pit mining operations in Western Australia: Mesa J and Mesa A in the Robe Valley, near Pannawonica, and West Angelas, approximately 100km west of Newman.

WA rental hikes show need to act on Newstart Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on families and community services says significant rent increases in Perth are making things even tougher for those struggling to survive on Newstart. “Latest figures from the Real Estate Institute of WA show an increase in rental prices of 4.4% in just the last three months,” Senator Siewert said.

“People on Newstart are already struggling to survive on $246.30 a week and with the rent for a house going up $10 [per] week, and the cost of smaller accommodation like a unit or apartment increasing by $30 per week, I find it hard to imagine how they will make ends meet.

“This will place those on Newstart under even more severe financial pressure.”

“This is another huge blow to single parent families who have just been dumped onto Newstart,

suffering a significant loss of income in the process. “Increasing financial pressures, and static, inadequate levels of income support are making it harder and harder for people to make ends meet. “This massive jump in rent highlights yet again the urgent need to increase the base rate of Newstart by $50 per week.”

“People on Newstart are already struggling to survive on $246.30 a week and with the rent for a house going up $10 [per] week, and the cost of smaller accommodation like a unit or apartment increasing by $30 per week, I find it hard to imagine how they will make ends meet.” Senator Rachel Siewert.

Pilbara to be briefed on changes to building code The Pilbara’s building industry will be briefed on imminent changes to the Building Code of Australia and other industry matters at two free information sessions run by the Building Commission in Karratha in April. “Each year the Australian Building Codes Board holds

seminars in metropolitan Perth on changes to the Building Code of Australia that come into effect on May 1 each year,” said Building Commissioner Peter Gow. “The Building Commission will be taking this information on the road again this year and delivering it to the regions, as well as taking the opportunity to provide a separate seminar for anyone working in the building industry on a range of policy and legislation-related information.”

A morning session aimed at builders, building surveyors, building designers and local government permit authorities will focus on changes to the BCA that will come into effect from May 1 and how they can apply the new technical standards. This seminar will also cover recent amendments to the Building Act and Building Regulations. A separate afternoon session for anyone working in the building industry will

cover topics including the building approvals process, home indemnity insurance, the complaints resolution process, the builder compliance program, the Home Building Contracts Act, registration and licensing, building policy updates and the Construction Contracts Act. Registration forms for both sessions are available on the Building Commission’s website at www.buildingcommission. wa.gov.au/industryevents.

“RELAX BY THE POOL”

Mermaid makes a splash By Tamara Binamat WA’s premier fishing competition Gamex has wrapped for another year. Residents and visitors to Exmouth were treated to a number of events, including a rock concert featuring Rose Tattoo, a ladies luncheon hosted by fashion designer Liz Davenport and one of the most unique events, a Shipwrecked party. The Shipwrecked party starred Feisty, a “mermaid” based in Perth. Nicki Mauri, also known as Feisty, wore an intricate mermaid costume while swimming in one of the world’s largest mobile aquariums with a capacity of 14,000 litres. Feisty wears a custom made lycra fishtail as her mermaid outfit. “Once it gets waterlogged it is quite hard to manouvere, and course you’re legs are always together, so I only have the movement of my feet,” explained Feisty. “You’ve got to do a lot of propulsion

with your arms; It’s a really good workout.” Feisty said the reaction from young and old is worth the hard work. “The kids are delighted,” she said. “Everybody loves it; When we were working at the Fringe Festival we’d get about 100 people waiting at the tank every day.” The mermaids and the Aquatank were on display during the afternoon for the kids during a more family oriented show. After hours the mermaids performed a more adult show at the Shipwrecked party.

Hundreds of punters flocked to local watering holes last Sunday to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. An Irish celebration, Aussies were in the spirit to celebrate bad beer, the colour green and a good jig. The Tambrey Tavern in Karratha threw an allout party with green beer, beef and Guinness pies, Irish music and a karaoke band, who shamrocked all night with lots of “singers” Dublin up for a song. There was Bailey an empty drink in the house as celebrations lasted right up until 10pm.

Rental company first to service Onslow’s resources boom Onslow and will service the FIFO market with a range of quality vehicles.” Ms Neal said the new branch would also make it much easier for companies to access mine specific vehicles for the project as required. “Previously, mine workers had to travel much further to source vehicles for Wheatstone; now that the project is ramping up, we’re able to meet the industry’s needs by providing the vehicles they need in a convenient location,” she said. Europcar has already signed several major accounts associated with the Wheatstone project and has fleeted the Onslow station to meet their customers’ needs. The fleet includes Europcar’s full range of commercial vehicles, including trucks, dual cab utes, single cab utes,

12-seater vans and a number of 33-seater coaches. These vehicles meet the safety standards of construction and mine sites. Europcar Operations Director, Matt Barker, said Europcar had further expansion plans to service the resources industry, looking to open branches in practical locations for their customers and the industry. “Europcar has a very successful leisure business, enabling us to concentrate on the commercial market, particularly in WA,” Mr Barker said. “With all that’s happening in the resources sector, it makes sense to be in Onslow and we’re proud to be the first leading commercial vehicle rental provider in the area.”

Nominations are now open for the Golden Gecko Awards The Golden Gecko awards, launched in 1992, recognise excellence and leadership, and acknowledge the outstanding contribution recipients have made to the responsible development of WA’s resources. Department of Mines and Petroleum Environment Division Executive Director Dr Phil Gorey said the awards offer an opportunity for industry to be recognised for leading practice and innovation in environmental management. “The Golden Geckos allow companies to share their experiences with government, industry and the community,” Dr Gorey said.

Dr Gorey said assessment is merit based so there is no competition between entries. “An assessment panel from various government agencies assess each of the eligible entries by attending site visits and presentations,” he said. In 2012, Pendoley Environmental Pty Ltd received a Golden Gecko Award for Environmental Excellence. Argyle Diamonds Limited was awarded a Certificate of Merit. Entries for this year’s Golden Gecko Awards are now open and close on April 12, 2013.

A leading global car rental company has opened a new branch in Onslow to meet further demand from WA’s booming resources industry. Demand for an Onslow Europcar branch is due to Chevron’s Wheatstone Project, a $25 billion project to supply natural gas across Asia-Pacific. Europcar Corporate Sales Manager for WA, Jennifer Neal, said the branch would provide much needed specialist commercial vehicles, as well as passenger vehicles, to the many companies involved in the project. “The Wheatstone project is one of Australia’s largest ever resource projects, located 200km north of Onslow with an onshore facility 12km west of Onslow,” Ms Neal said. “Europcar is the first vehicle rental operator to open in

A few fish were brought in to be weighed, including the new state and national record for blue marlin caught on 60kg. It was a 354.9kg fish that was captured onboard Blue Horizon using a Pakula lure. The clubhouse on that night was packed with people wanting to see the fish being weighed. The fish was filleted and given out to the crowd, with the remainder sent to Perth for the Salvation Army homeless organisation. One of the highlights for the tag and release bilflish sections was on day five when a broadbill swordfish was tagged by Kurt Williamson on Reel Teaser. The broadbill swordfish is considered to be the Holy Grail to game fishermen and while it was Kurt’s first broadbill, it was the tenth broadbill for Reel Teaser and skipper Ross Newton. This is something that we are sure no other recreational skipper in Australia has achieved. It was tagged in the wee hours around 3am on the Friday morning after the crew spent all night fishing for the species. Broadbill are usually difficult to catch, often found in deep waters and fight hard. They are called the gladiators of the ocean and aptly so, their scientific name is Xiphias Gladius.

The Celebrity Chef luncheon with Bart Beek at the Novotel was a huge success with over 70 women enjoying exquisite food. Liz Davenport did a fashion show through the luncheon and a few guys joined in the fun as well. Anglers brought in fish to be weighed of an evening, expert filleter Peter Anderton demonstrated how to fillet the fish, while Bart Beek cooked up the fresh fish with tasty sauces and spices for people to taste. The Aqua tank was filled with water and had salmon, whiting, queenfish, trevally, mackerel and a shovel nosed shark swimming inside for all to see. The fish had been caught and released in to the tank and then happily released back to their playground after the week of Gamex.

• Mark McKay is a happy but no doubt very sore man. Photo by Leith Holtzman Visiting marine artist Craig Smith was in Exmouth and lucky anglers got to purchase specially produced and signed artwork by the famous artist. Journalist David Granville was also a highlight for anglers with his expertise in billfishing and photography. The school kids benefited from educational sessions from celebrity guests Steve and Jo Starling, while many children and families also enjoyed seeing special guest Hodgy, the barefoot fisherman each afternoon at the gantry with his casting tricks and accuracy techniques. Lure maker Peter Pakula returned and many anglers were keen to learn from his years of experience. It was great to see the biggest fish of the event caught using one of his lures. The three live bands were fabulous for Exmouth, with many great comments from participants. The tournament raised funds for the EGFC through auctions and raffles during the week to assist with the repayments for the building and upkeep throughout the year. Anglers enjoyed winning daily random prizes, along with the final section prizes that are supported by many local businesses. The EGFC has a volunteer program with financial support going to other clubs that assisted with the running of the event. Many local people were also employed through security and catering with over 300 people to cater for on a daily basis. Local businesses reported good sales through what would otherwise be a quiet period of trade. On the whole, the tournament is a great benefit to the community.

9A Crane Circle

Karratha Netball held its annual general meeting on Tuesday night with around 100 members attending. A new committee was voted in with Tracy Kitching as president and Tracey Williamson as vice president. Tony Wear from the Shire of Roebourne attended and discussed how the new Leisureplex was coming along and how netball would be accommodated. Team nominations were also taken with 33 senior nominations and 23 junior nominations received, which added up to five extra senior teams but two fewer junior teams compared to last year. As KNA had received information from concerned parents that many dance classes were now clashing with netball on Tuesdays, a vote was taken to move junior netball to Mondays.

79 members voted in favour of the move so our juniors will play their first game of the season on Monday April 8. As we only have six courts until the move to the new Leisureplex, four senior games per week will have to be played on a Tuesday night – these games will be rotated throughout all teams in all divisions to cause minimal disruption to teams. Because of the change, late junior team nominations will be accepted until Tuesday March 26. Nomination forms can be downloaded from the club website and the $20 nomination fee can be made on the fee payment night on April 2. Karratha Netball are working hard to increase junior numbers, which have been declining over the years. We hope with one new game

night a week on Mondays, the new Leisureplex facility, more parent-guardian volunteer help and coaching and umpiring clinics, we can reverse this trend and entice juniors back to netball. It is with great pride that it was announced that the North West Netball Region had the third highest NetSetGO attendance in Australia for five to eight-year-olds. If you have missed the sign up for 2013, please email Alicia at kna.nsg@gmail.com. For more information or nomination forms visit the Karratha Netball website at www.karrathanetball.asn.au and join our Facebook page. Young mountain bikers master the dirt By Damien Muller

Karratha’s youngest mountain bikers are now hitting the trails too after 19 riders aged 4 to 12-years-old attended the Burrup Mountain Bike Club’s first Dirtmaster event on Sunday March 17. Categorised under Mountain Biking Australia, Dirtmaster is open to participants from age three through to and including 12-year-olds.

Sunday’s event was socially competitive with the focus on participation and having fun. After some time to familiarise themselves with the circuit, riders were grouped into age brackets and sent out on the course with parents to assist where required. The 860m circuit had been especially tailored for younger and beginner riders and included some features to provide a

level of challenge and excitement. An event village set up at the startfinish line allowed riders and parents to cool off in the shade, get a cold drink and for parents to cook up breakfast on the BBQ provided. The morning was rounded out with a participant prize draw made possible by the support of the Scott Cycles and the Future Clubs initiative. With

highlighted by the tired smiles of participants and some parents, the Burrup Mountain Bike Club will be running another Dirtmaster on the first day of the Club racing calendar, Saturday April 13, from 2pm to 3pm. Further details of this and other Burrup Mountain Bike Club events are available at http://home.spin.net.au/burrupmb/ or on the Burrup Mountain Bike Club Facebook page.

Come and try BMX By Sara McRobb Hot conditions were not enough to deter 40 new riders attending the Karratha BMX Club’s Come and Try Day on Saturday March 9. Club president Greg Kiehne welcomed parents and new riders to the club and gave them an overview of BMX in Karratha before experienced cyclists put on an exhibition of riding. The riders showed their skill of pumping, jumping and manualing on the track, while the new riders watched on in awe.

through cones and how to stop. With the basic skills under control, riders headed up to the start gate where they were shown how to ride from the start gate and around the track. Current club members rode alongside riders and encourage riders often having to lend a hand to push younger riders up the jumps. It was a great afternoon with slushies and a sausage sizzle to finish off the day. The Karratha BMX club will commence the 2013 season this Friday March 16 with registrations at 6pm.

Bushrangers win heart stopping Grand Final By Paul Marion The Dampier Redbacks hosted the Karratha Bushrangers in a hard-fought West Pilbara Junior Cricket Association Grand Final at the Windy Ridge oval on Friday March 15. The two teams had earned their place in the Under 13s division final by finishing equal top of the ladder at the end of the fifteen round season – the Redbacks eventually taking top spot by virtue of their superior run rate. With the two teams being

inseparable all season, they promised to put on a cracker of a game, and the boys didn’t let their supporters down.

Hall (30) and Will Cooney with a big hitting and well made 48, helped down the order by Marco Duvenhage (14 n.o.).

The Bushrangers began the game by winning the toss and electing to bat.

The Redbacks fought back late in the innings to bowl the Bushrangers out for 160 in the 25th over.

A nervous start by the Bushrangers and some tight bowling and fielding saw them lose four very quick wickets to be 4/14 after three overs. In what has become a trend this season, when the chips were down someone stepped up and on this occasion, it was Austin

Leading wicket takers for the Redbacks included Jack Clarke 3/17, Callum Balch 2/6 and Toby Mason 2/20, while Jack Davenport, Jaxon Marriott and Jonty Gray all finished with one wicket each. In reply, the Redbacks opened

the batting with the big hitting Jonty Gray, who retired after hitting a quick-fire 30 runs. The Redbacks lost wickets steadily throughout the innings with the only resistance coming from Jack Clarke (22). The steady stream of wickets brought Jonty back to the crease, continuing to play his shots and giving the Redbacks hope of victory. Eventually, in the last over of the match Jonty was run out for a well made 58 and the Bushrangers having bowled the

The WPJCA committee would like to thank all the parents who turned up week-in, week-out to support their children and in particular those that give up their time to volunteer where they can to make the competition a successful one. Dampier and Nickol to clash in cricket final By Mark Saunders The Dampier Taverners and Nickol Spaniards cricket clubs will meet in this weekend’s senior men’s grand final after one of the closest seasons ever seen in the West Pilbara Cricket Association. Having won through their tough knockout semi finals, the two teams now clash at 4pm at Windy Ridge Oval in Dampier this Saturday March 23. The big game should be a fitting climax to a season in which very little had separated the top four sides, with the second and third placed teams split by just a 0.01 per cent run rate going into the finals series. Last weekend’s two semi finals were also entertaining clashes with Dampier (6/104) defeating Pegs Creek at Millars Well after chasing down their total of 103 all out. Clint Degebrodt (31) and Dan Carse (30) were the top scorers for Peg’s Creek with some support from Paul Marion (19). Pegs crashed from 1/40 to 5/40 after a dominant over from Greg Hall (2/26) over but were

recovering from 6/50 until Jake Trewin ran out Paul Marrion with the total on 97. Taverner’s captain Mark Saunders took 3/14 off six overs. Dampier’s chase started precariously to be 3/15 but Brad Goes (37*) and Paul Rowe (38) steadied the ship. Dan Carse bowled well for his 3/17 off 7.1 overs with support from Kim Wilson (2/20). At Wickham, the home side posted a competitive total of 140 all out, with Shane Edwards (37) leading the runs. Steve Ryan (2/9) was the pick of the Nickol bowlers. The game was in the balance during Nickol’s chase when the team stumbled to 5/83 with Alan Coterill picking up vital wickets. However, Nickol captain Michael James (32*) and Dave Drummond (17) stabilised the innings with a 58 run sixth wicket partnership, reaching 5/141 with a few overs to spare. With Dampier and Nickol having won a game each in their earlier encounters this season, the grand final will no doubt be a close affair.
