The Australian Bankers Association Inc. is advising of a phone scam involving cold calls being made by persons reporting to be from the Australian Bankers Association promising a refund of “overcharged bank fees”. The caller asks that the customer proceed to a post office to receive the so-called “refund” which can range from $5,000 to $7,000. Instructions are given to these customers to call them when at the post office whereby they are told by the fraudsters to talk the customer into sending money via Western Union, which they claim, is a “refund service”.

Man charged after baby dies near Fortescue By Tamara Binamat Major Crime Squad detectives have charged a 25-year-old man as part of their investigation into the death of a 10-monthold baby from Broome. Police and St John Ambulance were called to Fortescue Roadhouse about 2pm last Wednesday March 20. A man arrived at the roadhouse with the baby boy who was not breathing. The child had been reported missing earlier that same day by family members at an address in Broome. The 10-month old boy died en route to Nickol Bay Hospital. The man from Broome has been charged with Grievous Bodily Harm and appeared in the Karratha Magistrates Court last Friday March 22. The charge will be reviewed after a postmortem examination is completed. Police are calling for anyone with information that may assist with the investigation to come forward. In particular, police are interested in the movements of a silver 1982 Toyota Landcruiser (80 series) travelling between Broome and Karratha. This vehicle is believed to have travelled from Broome, leaving at approximately 11pm on Tuesday night, March 19. It was located at the Fortescue Roadhouse at approximately 2pm on Wednesday, March 20. Anyone with information about this incident, or the vehicle described above, is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Karratha family day care centres reopen By Ben Leahy Family day care service Embracing Children has reopened its three centres in Karratha after closing earlier this year due to contractual problems with its Perth-based scheme operator. Under Western Australian law, individual family day care providers can only operate if they are licenced by a scheme operator that is in turn licenced by the State Government. However, this process turned messy for Embracing Children in January when it was forced to temporarily close its three family day care centres after its scheme operator cancelled the contract at short notice. Embracing Children owner Michelle Pisani said she can’t comment on why the contract was cancelled as the matter is now under legal dispute, but said her organisation did nothing wrong. She said the State Government backed this view because it had now granted Embracing Children a licence to be its own scheme operator. “To our knowledge we have done nothing wrong which is why we’ve been approved to be a scheme ourselves,” Michelle said. “In fact, the [State Government] department said they would fast track our application because parents were without care in Karratha.”

The change in Embracing Children’s structure now means it is not only able to licence its three family day care centres in Karratha but also licence other family day care services. “So other ladies or dads out there, who want to run family day care from home, we can now come out there and licence them provided they meet the criteria.”Michelle said. Having paid staff salaries and other expenses over the period the centres were closed, Michelle is keen to attract parents back to her service as fast as possible and gain financial support from interested local companies. “It is nice to see a lot of our families stayed with us,” Michelle said. “[But with the vacancies created by the closure] we’ve also got a lot of new families that have joined our service over the past weeks because they have been on waiting lists for a long time.” As well as taking a financial toll, Michelle said the situation had also taken an emotional toll on her family. SIZZLING She said her young son was undergoing surgery in Brisbane on SUMMER the day she found out that PerthDEAL! based scheme operator was ending Embracing Children’s membership. “This has been a really tough period,” she said.

It was a very hard decision for the Echo team to choose only three winners of the Easter colouring competition that was drawn on Wednesday, March 27.

Two-year-old Keira Drabble won the one to three-yearold category and clapped with Eggcitment when she collected her basket of real chocolate eggs.

Due to so many entries being received from children as young as one to as old as 12, the team decided to make three categories for one to three-year-olds, four to sevenyear-olds and eight to 12-yearolds.

Six-year-old Jaydanna Norris won the four to seven-year-old was eggstatic when she heard the news that she actually won something. Jaydanna liked the picture and the way she had coloured it in and will be sharing her prize with her

younger sister. And lastly, eight-year-old Taylor Nilsen won the eight to 12-year-old with her bright and original entry of her easter egg basket. Taylor said she came up with two designs, one of a bunny and the other was the basket and it went from there. “I am looking forward to next year, and seeing what I can come up with”.

Financial Markets By Brenton Reynolds Just as world equity markets were starting to pick back up and renew investors’ faith in them, Europe again reared its ugly head and has halted the rally we had seen so far this year. While a deal has now been done in Cyprus to prevent the collapse of their banking system, the

damage has been done. The ASX 200 closed the week ending March 22 at 4,967, down 153 points or 2.99 per cent with the biggest news shock coming from Leighton (LEI). The Leighton share price closed down 6.9 per cent on Friday March 22 after a boardroom spill. Leighton announced that Mr Stephen Johns (chairman),

Mr Wayne Osborn (nonexecutive director) and Mr Ian Macfarlane AC (nonexecutive director) have resigned from the board. These directors noted that in their opinion, there has been a breakdown in relations with the major LEI shareholder, Hochtief, and that Hochtief no longer supports an independent board at LEI.

Stock Tip of the Week Sheffield Resources Ltd (SFX) – Speculative Buy Sheffield Resources has announced initial metallurgy test work for the Thunderbird mineral sands deposit (1.4Bt @ 6.1% Heavy Mineral) near Dampier, WA. The tests show that conventional processing can produce a high quality zircon product potentially suitable for the

premium zircon market. We expect the Company to move quickly into a scoping study/PFS. We believe first production in 2016 is realistic. Thunderbird is shaping up to be a significant new supply of global zircon. Our model assumes it will add 5-10 per cent per annum of global

supply. For a world class asset the capital expenditure is relatively modest and the economics are compelling. Hartleys rates SFX as a SPECULATIVE BUY with a valuation of $1.97 and a 12 month price target of $2.11.

In 2012, both schools achieved outstanding results. A total of 41 students from both schools achieved an Australian Tertiary Admission Ranking (ATAR) and all scored highly enough to gain entry into university.

Of these students, 80% scored more than 65% in their exams and five achieved an ATAR of 90 or more. In addition, Karratha Senior High School improved its ranking in WA’s school league table by 31 places and St Luke’s College retained its strong standing in the top 50% of WA schools.

More funding needed to preserve Indigenous languages By Ben Leahy Language specialists battling to save endangered languages in the Pilbara have welcomed a $54m boost in Federal Government funding, announced earlier this month. The Federal funding aims to encourage the use of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Indigenous languages by boosting community resources and visual arts programs across the country. Senior linguist at the Wangka Maya Pilbara Aboriginal Language Centre in Port Hedland, Jessica Mathie, said the funding was urgently needed. “All our work is critically under resourced,” Ms Mathie said.

pilbara

“Extra money will mean that less projects will be rejected.” Despite local Aboriginal people having some of the world’s oldest living cultures, the Federal funding comes at a time when many Pilbara Indigenous languages face the prospect of dying out. “There are a lot of people in the Pilbara who still retain a very strong sense of language and culture, they have amazing knowledge, which is why we are here working with them,” Ms Mathie said. “But I also can’t stress how urgent it is to act to save other local languages. “If you think about a language like Nyiyaparli [traditionally spoken in the area around Newman], there are probably only 30

people speaking it and most of them are elderly.”

Ms Mathie said Wangka Maya had recently released a picture dictionary containing 50 Nyiyaparli words but that the language remained endangered as long as it was not being passed onto children. “The only safe language is one that is commonly spoken by all children in the community and used in all contexts,” Ms Mathie said.

“Once a language stops being spoken to children when they are young, they stop acquiring it and they stop being able to use it in all contexts, so its use gets really reduced. “In the case of Nyiyaparli, unless we do something now, that knowledge will pass away with the old people and once that happens there is absolutely no way to resurrect that knowledge.”

“If you think about staffing, at Wangka Maya, we cover an area that contains 31 languages

but we only have three linguists and a [small] number of Aboriginal language workers at any one time.

A powerful story based on one family’s survival of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Maria (Naomi Watts), Henry (Ewan McGregor) and their three sons begin their winter vacation in Thailand, but on the morning of December 26th, as the family relaxes around the pool, a terrifying roar rises up from the center of the earth. As Maria freezes in fear, a huge wall of black water races across the hotel grounds toward her. Based on a true story, The Impossible is the unforgettable account of a family caught in the mayhem of one of the worst natural catastrophes of our time.

DRINKING WATER Local elder Wilfred Hicks

shines in the Archibald Prize

Save money using reverse osmosis to purify your own tap water and cut out the high costs of bottled water delivery!

By Ben Leahy

✓ Delicious rainwater quality

Respected Karratha resident and Wong-goo-tt-oo elder Wilfred Hicks has just become that bit more famous after having his portrait exhibited in Sydney in this year’s final of the Archibald Prize.

(takes out all the calcium) ✓ Self contained refrigerated coolers ✓ No bottles - never run out of water again ✓ Cold & room temperature taps ✓ Less than $2.15 per day for all the water your family can drink ✓ Hot & cold machines for your office ✓ Free installation

Indigenous artist Julie Dowling painted Wilfred sitting down and wearing his familiar wide-brimmed hat in what was her third time entering the Archibald, and – remarkably – her third time as a finalist in the prestigious portrait painting awards.

Julie said she asked to paint Wilfred because he had tirelessly spoke up about issues affecting Aboriginal people.

and lore, all the things that are drawn on those rocks are what they get taught at the culture meeting times,” Wilfred said. “So the elders sit down and sing all night and the boys are supposed to learn about songs and the kangaroos and emus and … all their sacred issues. “I feel that it is the Aboriginal Bible that is being destructed by the contractors that come into the Burrup all the time.” Wilfred has lived near the Burrup most of his life, having camped and fished at Hearsons Cove with his father when just a boy. Julie said Wilfred’s connection to the land gave

her inspiration about the fight to preserve art and culture in her own traditional country. “I’ve been painting about the Burrup since 2007 because it is very close to the same issues that are faced in my grandmas country, Badimia, which is around Lake Bore and under Mount Magnet,” she said. And while the painting did not claim the main prize at the Archibald, Julie is happy with her work and already planning to do more portraits of Wilfred. For his part, Wilfred seems quite pleased too. “She gave me a few more years of life, in the painting I reckon,” Wilfred said.

“I see him as a bit of a hero, particularly because he has been working on trying to preserve the Burrup [Peninsula] for quite some time,” Julie said.

WESTERN AUSTRALIAN SALARIES AND ALLOWANCES TRIBUNAL

“The Archibald is a great place to showcase people’s personalities and what they have been doing all their lives … and he was one of those individuals who deserved a platform to show what he is about.”

INQUIRY PURSUANT TO SECTION 7B OF THE SALARIES AND ALLOWANCES ACT 1975 LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTED MEMBERS Section 7B of the Salaries and Allowances Act 1975 requires the Tribunal from time to time to inquire into and determine:

Julie’s entry into the Archibald comes as Wilfred and other members of the Stand Up for the Burrup movement continue their campaign to have the peninsula World Heritage listed for its rock carvings.

the amount of fees, or the minimum and maximum amounts of fees, to be paid under the Local Government Act 1995 to elected council members for attendance at meetings; the amount of expenses, or the minimum and maximum amounts of expenses, to be reimbursed under the Local Government Act 1995 to elected council members; and the amount of allowances, or the minimum and maximum amounts of allowances, to be paid under the Local Government Act 1995 to elected council members.

The Burrup is internationally recognised as being home to the world’s largest collection of rock art.

The Tribunal is currently c ond uc ting its inquiry and has decided to invite submissions prior to its determination in 2013. The Tribunal invites interested individuals and organisations to lodge submissions to the inquiry by 5pm on Friday, 5 April 2013 with the: Executive Officer Salaries and Allowances Tribunal 10th Floor, London House 216 St Georges Terrace Perth Western Australia 6000

It also contains information about Aboriginal culture and lore that Wilfred said was passed from generation to generation.

New Federal and State Ministers to oversee resources sector By Ben Leahy

Help us keep the Pilbara tidy.

The Pilbara’s booming resources industry will come under the ministerial control of two new appointees after recent cabinet reshuffles at the Federal and State Government levels. Western Australian Member of parliament Gary Gray is now the new Federal Minister for Resources following the dramatic Labor Party leadership spill on March 21.

Once you’ve finished enjoying your Pilbara Echo newspaper, please recycle or dispose of it thoughtfully. A little action from everyone will make the Pilbara a better place to live.

Mr Gray took over the portfolio from Martin Ferguson after Prime Minister Julia Gillard set about rearranging her senior Ministers in the wake of the leadership challenge. Mr Gray was an executive at global oil and gas giant, Woodside, before being elected to federal parliament in 2007. Steve Knott the chief executive of peak resources body, the Australian Mines and Metals Association, welcomed Mr Gray’s appointment.

INVEST IN KARRATHA’S ONLY HIGH-RISE LUXURY DEVELOPMENT

“Minister Gray should bring a strong understanding of the booming offshore oil and gas industry to the role, including the need for the sector to remain competitive and sustainable in the long-term,” Mr Knott said. “With $650bn worth of value in Australia’s project pipeline, the industry is confident Gary Gray will do all he can in his new portfolio to create an attractive investment environment where these projects can come to fruition.”

In the first week of his new appointment, Mr Gray has indicated that he believes the mining sector is paying enough to the State and Federal Governments and has ruled out changes to the mining resources and rent tax.

“CCWA acknowledges that Gary Gray has distanced himself from previous comments casting doubt on climate science, however, we are troubled by the closeness that Minister Gray has had with the petroleum business over the years,” Mr Hanson said.

“It is important that Minister Gray recognises that as the Minister for Resources and Industry he has a duty to consider the costs to the community and the environment of large resources projects.”

FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY FOR ASTUTE INVESTORS. LIMITED 1BED X 1BATH FULLY FURNISHED APARTMENTS FROM $604,300.

Mr Hanson was more encouraged by the appointment of Bill Marmion to the State Government’s Mines and Petroleum Ministry, however.

Special offer for pre-leased, fully furnished and equipped one bed apartments in the heart of Karratha’s town centre. Buy now off the plans. Construction already underway. Estimated completion Dec 2013.

But while the resources industry is happy with the appointment of Mr Gray, Jamie Hanson from the Conservation Council of Western Australia is more reserved.

Mr Marmion took over the Mines and Petroleum Ministry as part of Premier Barnett’s cabinet reshuffle following the Liberal Party’s victory in the State Elections in early March. He was previously Environment and Water Minister.

I am a clinical nutritionist living in Karratha and here to help any one I can! I spent a couple of years living back home in New Zealand but the Pilbara has called me back, as everyone told me it would. I work alongside my mother (Jan Newburn) with Red Rock Fitness. She is a Personal Trainer (you may have seen her at Baynton West park cracking the whip behind her clients) and I am the nutritionist. We are extremely passionate about increasing ‘wellness’ in Karratha. So, what is a nutritionist? I restore nutrient imbalances via the diet to

assist your body in correcting health complaints. Every condition under the sun has a link to diet and nutrients so I look for those links in individuals and bring back the balance. Diet related disease is the leading cause of death in America, Australia and most major developed countries; it has well overtaken smoking. We have an epidemic on our hands in regards to diabetes, obesity and heart disease and I believe it is time we begin to take health into our own hands and start taking a serious look at what we put in our mouths each day.

The beauty of treating health via the diet is it is the most non-invasive, harmless and enjoyable form of medicine. Eating is something we do multiple times a day so it makes perfect sense that we should be packing each meal with health promoting foods. I don’t believe in fad diets or quick fixes, it’s about eating whole foods with good habits that need to last a lifetime. It’s all right there in front of us; we just need to understand how we can use it to our advantage. Common problems we are faced with from living in the Pilbara are lack of availability, lack of choice (camp food for example), and lifestyle factors such as long working hours, extreme heats, night shift and so on. Every single one of these issues impacts on your state of health, which calls for even more need to pay attention to what you are fuelling yourself with. Health in Focus: In my following articles I will be putting the spotlight on different health conditions and explaining the dietary link. I will include tips on how you can support your body in dealing with this condition by eating the right foods and balancing your lifestyle.

When it comes to estimating the market value of property the building and its design features are the main variables.

By contrast land value is relatively easy to estimate. The old adage that “there’s a buyer for every property” is true, but it depends on price. Some properties, however, contain popular building and design features making the

estimation easier. As a general guide, here’s an explanation of contemporary attitudes to WA homes and how they contribute to property values.

Bedrooms: The number of bedrooms remains the most common way to describe a property. Over the last 50 years the number of bedrooms in the typical home has grown from two to four but the average household size has decreased. Many homes today are occupied only by one or two people. Regardless of this shrinking household size the desire for larger homes remains strong and the market tends to put higher values on four bedroom houses and three bedroom apartments. Extra bedrooms offer flexible lifestyle options such as a home office or guest room.

Car space: Secure car accommodation is important but doesn’t rate as highly as living areas.

Kitchen: Popular TV shows about cooking illustrate Australia’s love of entertaining at home or just preparing sumptuous meals. A well designed, functional and spacious kitchen with quality draws and cupboards, bench tops and appliances is an increasing priority for home buyers.

Storage: This is an underrated influence on value. We are living in smaller households but accumulating more possessions. Homes with plenty of storage space are likely to be more valued. Spare bedrooms can also be regarded as storage space.

Al fresco area: Our climate is ideal for covered and protected areas that open to a courtyard or garden. Whether it’s a simple social space with a modest outdoor setting or a classy BBQ area with a cedar panelled patio, a functional and sheltered setting in the outdoors that expands the living area of the home and utilises the garden can be a great bonus.

Theatre room: The common ‘games room’ of the 1970s and 80s has given way to the home theatre. Flat screen TVs with surround sound units and comfy chairs demand their own space, although I wonder if the trend towards watching entertainment online either at a PC or with mobile tablets may change

Bathroom: The number of bathrooms and toilets is second only to the number

this trend in future?

of bedrooms when it comes to buyer interest. The market values a second bathroom and toilet or en suites very highly due to the convenience and privacy they offer. Particularly where a home is shared with adult children or leased to sharing tenants.

Together, these factors add the most value and ‘wow’ factor to a home.

Renting with pets is possible It can be difficult for tenants with pets to find a suitable property or a land owner who will consider allowing them, but thankfully this is changing. The increasing number of people who keep pets for companionship or security means that many land owners are becoming more understanding. People looking for rental properties on reiwa.com can now search specifically for properties that are pet-friendly. If a rented property is leased through an agency it will be looked after by a property manager. Their role is to manage the property for the owner, but it is the owner who chooses what happens to their investment including whether or not pets will be considered. Under the Residential Tenancies Act, owners have the right to refuse animals, although most property managers will advise owners to keep an open mind.

cats and dogs, and that these animals are often well cared for and regarded as ‘family.’ Property managers will usually recommend that land owners consider applicants with pets provided the dwelling is suitable for them. As a tenant it’s always best to be upfront about all the circumstances under which you will be renting and references for animals can assist with the processing of a rental application. A positive letter from a previous land owner or property manager can be a big help. Some property managers might require a photo of a dog seeking a tenancy to ensure it does not breach the Restricted Dog Breeds regulations 2002. Tenants must understand that if they are approved to have an animal on the property, then approval is only for that particular animal. Further approval must be sought for additional animals or a replacement pet if the original one dies or moves out.

Some owners choose not to allow animals because of allergies or a previous bad experience.

Under the RTA a pet bond of $260 may be taken if approval is given for a dog or cat.

Undisciplined animals can cause damage to floorings, curtains, furniture and gardens.

This money can only be used for fumigation where required.

They can also disrupt neighbours. Of course, many pet owners are responsible guardians and greatly appreciate land owners who are fair and reasonable. Property managers are aware that many people have pets, particularly

Any repairs to damage caused by the animal that is not rectified by the tenants at the end of their lease will be deducted from the main bond. No bond can be taken for additional animals and landlords cannot ask more than the $260 regardless of pet numbers. Source: REIWA

Karratha Airport redevelopment prepares for take-off Karratha Airport is set to undergo a major revamp following a Council decision to progress to the detailed design phase of the redevelopment project. The redevelopment of the terminal will improve facilities including new cafes, bar, concessional areas, toilets, arrivals and departures lounge, security enhancements and baggage claim. The upgrade will also provide the capability for international flights and for airline lounges should airlines deem them viable. Shire of Roebourne President Fiona White-Hartig said the decision to get detailed designs for the project was another key step in the redevelopment process.

K 16

“We know the airport is showing signs of stress during peak times but we need to go through the detailed design process to make sure that the redevelopment will create the best passenger experience possible,” Cr White-Hartig said.

“As the second busiest airport in Western Australia, it’s really important that we design our terminal upgrade to cater for the massive growth in passenger numbers that we continue to experience. “The Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics reported that Karratha Airport experienced passenger growth of 10.6 per cent over the last year so I’m very keen to see the detailed designs complete so Council can make a decision to start construction.” The Airport terminal upgrade will provide new commercial and retail opportunities at the airport. Baggage claim and sorting areas will also be remodelled to increase capacity, utilise space more effectively and create an international baggage claim and border protection area. Hospitality facilities will also get a facelift that may be complimented in the future by the addition of airport lounges on the new first floor. The projected cost of the concept plan is estimated to be approximately $32 million with clearer indications of costs to be provided in conjunction with the detailed design.

interview By Tamara Binamat Fingers Mitchell Cullen has been lighting up the Australian music scene and is set to blow away the world. A multi-instrumentalist at only 20-years-old, Mitchell can be seen playing four instruments at a time. The one-man band specialises in the didgeridoo and guitar, and incorporates a stomp box, shaker, harmonica and various types of guitar in his set. Mitchell said after learning the

guitar 10 years ago he picked up the didgeridoo at 14-years-old. “I started on the guitar and after watching Xavier Rudd’s DVD I [was inspired] to play the didgeridoo,” Mitchell said. “Then it started coming together; I started writing music, I got a few gigs and now it’s got big.” Mitchell draws inspiration for song writing from issues he feels passionate about, such as politics, new shark laws and the Kimberley gas hub. But it’s not just locally Mitchell is making an impact.

Prime time TV show Australia’s Got Talent held a competition to find the nation’s best home-grown talent and after making the shortlist for the top ten, Mitchell won the title of Australia’s Number One Home-Grown Talent. Mitchell played to the whole country on live television during the Australia’s Got Talent grand final episode in 2012. “That was really cool and really good exposure,” Mitchell said. “[My music is] something different I guess and people must have liked it. “I want to head over to the east coast and then overseas and try make it bigger and bigger.”

interview

Former Tom Price student improvises new hobby on the stage Tom Price is one of Australia’s most rugged climates. But Tom Price Senior High School graduate Hannah Rice has managed to find an even more unforgiving environment – doing improvisation comedy on the stage. As a performer in Just Improvise’s monthly Theatresports show at the Mount Lawley Bowling Club in Perth, Hannah must delivers thrills, spills and funny moments all of the cuff.

But while that sounds scary to most, Hannah loves it for the excitement it brings. “Each show is completely different so it never gets boring,” Rice said. “Strange things happen a lot but they don’t seem strange at the time. “I’ve become boneless and collapsed in a heap, turned into an alien creature called Geoff, and I’ve even mooned people – you just do whatever comes to you.” Performing since she was a child, Rice previously did stand-up comedy, wrote

scripts and was involved in group-devised works with the WA Youth Theatre Company and Edith Cowan University. “Improvisation is my favourite,” Hannah said. “The main concern is not being able to come up with anything interesting or entertaining.” “But there is also the challenge of not trying too hard and just trusting everything that happens was meant to happen.” Just Improvise creative director Glenn Hall has been producing theatre since 2000

and said the thrill of Theatresports is the risk of failure. “The wonderful thing for improvisers is that, even if you fail, the audience will love you if you fail happily,” the WA Academy of Performing Arts improv lecturer said. Joining Rice on stage this April are Chris Ratcliffe, Chloe Ng, Adelaide Buchanan, Callon Leam, Manfred Yon, Esther Longhurst, Felicity Glencross, Michael Breeze, Lance Magnus, Chantelle Magnus and Jessica Messenger. They will battle it out in the first half to take on current kings of the ring, The Knockouts (Paris Burns, Zac Hall and Neil Barnard). House band The Cross-Eyed Cats will also be on hand to play some toetapping tunes.

By Tamara Binamat New Soundland is described as a combination of a jazz bassist, a hard rock drummer, lead guitarist, a hip hop twisted vocalist and a devotee of soul, with carefully added electric fills, fast flowing beats and defying bass lines, warmed with a blanket of reggae and energised with flavor. It sounds likes a recipe but new Soundland is more a rock band than a rock cake. New Soundland is made up of Julian Price, Bob Meier, Chirs Reidy, Fredrick Reidy and Jayde Tiopira. Originally a three piece band, new

Soundland’s momentum kicked off after recording their first few songs in a studio in Yallingup. A studio producer booked their first live gigs locally before New Soundland grew to tour the state. “The sound started to change into more of a live upbeat ska sound from a reggae base,” said lead vocalist Freddie Reidy. “We turned into ska, hip hop, high energy groove music influenced by bands such as Sublime and Red Hot Chilli Peppers.” New Soundland covered Western Australia extensively last year on a huge tour of the state. A film crew documented the journey as the band played 30 gigs in 40 days, including shows at Karratha. The documentary will be completed later this year and available on the band website at www. newsoundlandmusic.com.

Sports expo showcases local leagues to Karratha kids By Ben Leahy

with parents and potential volunteers.

Basketballs, hockey sticks and footies were flying everywhere at the Bulgarra sports ovals on March 22 as Karratha kids tried out new sports at the Shire of Roebourne’s inaugural Sports Expo.

“[The expo] gives the sports clubs and associations a chance to … promote themselves and gain new members and volunteers,” Sam said.

Around 80 to 90 children attended the expo and took part in clinics in six sports, including Aussie rules, basketball, hockey, netball, rugby league and soccer. Each session lasted 15 minutes and gave the five to 12-year-olds the chance to try out new games in a fun and friendly environment. But, according to event organiser Sam King from the Shire of Roebourne, the expo had more than just future sports stars in its sights as it aimed to also connect local leagues

He said this helped “increase the club’s capacity to deliver a service to the community”. Local NRL development officer Chris Newman said the event was a success for his sport with a number of children signing up on the day to play in the upcoming junior league season. Sam said the Shire of Roebourne now hopes to expand the expo. “Hopefully we can grow it next year and the years to come to incorporate more sports and children and parents,” he said.

Swim club expecting big turnout for North West Open Karratha swim club members are already back in the pool training for the North West Open after recently returning from the Country Pennants Swim Carnival held three hours north of Perth in York. The North West Open is one of the biggest events for the region and each year the Karratha Amateur Swimmming Club welcomes around 10 clubs, featuring over 200 swimmers. Club pesident Samantha Felix said preparations are underway for the event. “It takes a huge effort for the club, committee, parents and volunteers to make this event the success that it is,” Samantha said. While benefitting local swimmers, the North West Open also boosts tourism by attracting approximately 300 people to

the Karratha region, with many often staying a few days extra either side of the weekend’s competition. “It has always been an extremely popular swimming event for the North West teams, who are keen on travelling the distance to come to Karratha each year,” Samantha said. “Every parent, who has a child or children involved in sport, knows how important it is to host events like this so that they have the chance to compete, participate and mingle with other competitors from different towns. “It’s great to see parents and friends alike come together to make this event the success that it always is.” Samantha said that as an amateur club, the support of local businesses was invaluable. “Just recently we sent a team to

the Country Pennants Carnival, which involved flights, road transport, accommodation and food costs,” Samantha said. “The generous contributions from our sponsors meant many more swimmers were able to attend this event.” The North West Open Championships will be held on the weekend of April 13 and 14. Events are held for eight-yearolds through to the Open age category. This year, the club will present medals to the 35-plus age group to encourage parents and mature swimmers to join in the fun. The club is hoping for as many entries as possible for this new age group. For further information on competing, sponsoring or attending the North West Open email karrathaswimclub@hotmail. com.

Tom Price basketballers play-off in Country Championships final By Kelly Fitzgerald and Kelly Dominiak Tom Price’s leading female basketball players have shone at the 2013 Country Championships in Perth over the March Labour Day weekend after advancing to the tournament’s grand final. It was the second year running that the Tom Price Amateur Basketball Association sent a women’s representative team to the championships, with this year’s contingent made up of eight local players and an umpire and scorer. Unfortunately, a couple of teams pulled out of the competition at short notice, so our first game was not until 2.30pm on Saturday afternoon against Narrogin. This was a great physical game with Trinity Keath showing her strength under the basket and Christine Sherry pulling in some great rebounds as

guard. Narrogin proved to be a worthy opponent defeating Tom Price by two points, with the final score being 28 to 26. Tom Price next came up against Esperance that evening and, having had the chance to warm-up in the first game, played some fantastic basketball. Nat Hutchinson pulled off three great charge fouls from Esperance’s biggest player and Cass Wheel was showing off her speed flying down the court scoring points with some great fast breaks. Tom Price bagged their first win of the weekend with a four point win to end the game on a score 19 versus 15. Sunday started with a 9.15am game against Jerramungup where the team had trouble getting the ball in the basket and went down in the end 27 to 18. By far the best game of the weekend

was round two with Narrogin. The girls were more prepared for the physical game and came out firing. Kelly Dominiak was getting some strong rebounds in defence and guard Lauren Foy made a couple of three point shots when most needed. Tom Price subsequently came out victors 18 to 16. The team next played Bindoon and also came out victorious 48 to 10. Dom Mott played brilliantly and was awarded best on court and Kim Castle was getting some great rebounds at base and making the baskets count. A n o t h e r annihilation of Bindoon the next morning with a score of 46 to 13 saw the team make the grand final against Jerramungup, which was a mammoth effort and an opportunity well deserved.

After a few frantic calls to change flights, the team was ready to give it their all. It was a tough game but the girls were not able to outplay Jerramungup, going down 25 to 14. Congratulations to Trinity Keath who was awarded the most valuable player for the grand final. Special thanks goes to to our umpire for the weekend, John Hennah, who travelled

from Kalgoorlie for the games and our scorer Ben English. Lastly, the weekend would not have been successful without the fantastic support of our sponsors The Shire of Ashburton, Rio Tinto, Leonie Bailey, Pilbara Industries, Byfords, LJ Hooker Karratha and Lestok – thank you for your generous contribution to our team.

Wickham Wolves hungry for success after winning preseason cup By Ben Leahy

Preseason grand final report

The Wickham Wolves made a promising start to the 2013 footy season as they took home the North Pilbara Football League preseason cup at the Bulgarra ovals on March 23. Led by their brigade of speedy midfielders and forwards, the Wickham Wolves claimed both their round robin matches before beating the South Hedland Swans in the grand final. The preseason cup produced mixed results, however, for last year’s regular season grand final opponents, the Port Hedland Rovers and Karratha Kats, who each won one of their round robin games and lost the other. For the Karratha Falcons and Dampier Sharks, meanwhile, it will be a tough couple of weeks on the training track as they each try to recover from losing both their preseason games.

by V Swans Regional Development Manager Clint Degebrodt Last Saturday night, saw the Falcons Football Club host the North Pilbara Football League’s annual preseason carnival at the Bulgara playing fields. Defending champs the Karratha Kats looked to be the team to beat with ever-present threats, while Port Hedland Rovers presented a worry for all opposing coaches. But the surprise package was a revamped Wolves side under new coach Richard Coates that went through to the grand final undefeated with some irresistible footy. Another side that seemed to benefit from an off season restructure was their grand final opponent, the South Hedland Swans led by Steve Markham, who won both their pool matches with deft ball movement and sound decision making. The Swans exploded forward at the opening of the grand final with a clean centre break that saw young Swan Dom Coppin burst through half forward but narrowly missing his shot. The ball remained in dispute for much of the next 10 minutes before a strong mark by Ronald Mills handed Claude Taylor the first goal of the game to the Wolves. Swans answered quickly from the resultant ball up through Brayden Dhu’s clean hands. The ball was locked between the half back lines and Fabian Woods controlled the air for the Wolves repelling repeated attacked from the flying Swans midfield before creating a chance for a Tim Renton snap to sail home truly. Wickham generated multiple opportunities for little return as the Swans pressure was enough to ensure the Wolves were forced to take difficult shots and the match

was even at the end of the half. At the resumption, Mills stamped his authority on the contest and broke the deadlock with a steadying Wolves goal. The team from Wickham applied physical pressure around the ground to seize the ascendency from a tiring Swans side. And when Jayden Brown sneaked through a clever snap using the outside of the right foot from the dead pocket, the Wolves took the first clear break of the match. Soon after Nelson Ansey released Jarrod cross for a running goal from the kick off line and then Cross added the sealer with a second inside 30 seconds to finish the Grand Final with the Wolves 7.2 defeating the Swans 2.3. The Swans were happy with their performance considering player availability, travel and a broken down bus outside of Whim Creek. “I’m really proud of the boys and to be competitive is a tribute to how hard they worked so far in the preseason,” coach Markham said. He also praised his team and singled out Matty Wilson, Malcolm Anderson, Zarack Bin-Saad, Brayden Dhu and Ryan Morelli for special mention for their performance over the carnival. Coach Coates was pleased with his players, who held their structures and demonstrated their understanding of the new game plan. “I’m happy with all the boys, it’s a cliché but it was a solid team effort, we won’t get too carried away but we are happy with the win as a measure of where we are at.” He added that Jarred Cross, Ronald Mills, Fraser Bearcroft, Douglas Bobby and Nelson Ansey were handy but all players contributed over the day.

Nickol’s conquistadors win cricket grand final By Kymron Smith The Nickol Spaniards have edged out the Dampier Taverners in a tight outdoor cricket season grand final on Saturday March 23. Dampier entered the game with confidence having consistently won games throughout the West Pilbara Cricket Association season. Nickol, on the other hand, had struggled early but stormed into grand final contention with a late season burst. Nickol elected to bat first in hot conditions with opening pair Matt Nowotny (47) and Ian Drummond (20) setting a solid foundation for the innings with a 50 run stand at the top of the order. With the ground in fantastic condition, runs quickly flowed with some excellent running between the wickets. After the loss of the first wicket, Dave Brunton (24) continued on in the same vein also building a good partnership of 39 before Matt was dismissed. A couple of cheap wickets threatened to turn the innings until Dave Drummond (24) and Craig “Rhino” Ryan (13no.) combined and set things to rights, pushing the total towards 160. With every run crucial and overs running out Cameron Rice (0) sacrificed his wicket going for a quick single to allow the established batsman to face the final deliveries. The sacrifice paid off as Rhino bludgeoned the final ball back down the ground for six to see Nickol finish on 8/166.

Dampier’s bowlers toiled hard in the heat of the day with mixed results as missed chances hampered their efforts. Adam Palumbo (1/35) maintained a tidy opening spell while the luckless Jake Trewin (0/50) stuggled for control. Having to wait until the twelfth over for their first break through, the introduction of Greg Hall (2/14) had immediate impact. It wasn’t until after the drinks break that Dampier had their next victim, Paul Rowe (1/9) doing the damage in his first over in the attack. Mark Saunders (2/26) bowled well and applied the pressure while in the attack. The Nickol bowlers were off to an indifferent start when seven runs came off the first over, all of them sundries. The opening bowlers, Matt Nowotny (1/23) and Michael James (3/19), soon got back on track bowling a good line and length and tightening the screws on the Dampier batsmen. When Shaun Kelly (2/40) was brought into the attack in the sixth over, success was not far away with his first two overs both wicket maidens. Kymron Smith (0/26) kept the pressure on at one end, then Dave Brunton (1/19) and Cameron Rice (2/13) took crucial wickets to keep Nickol in the game when it looked like slipping away. Craig Ryan (1/9) again had a cameo role to play coming on for one over and removing the Dampier captain tipping the game back into Nickol’s favour. With a sizeable total set, Dampier would have to apply themselves to their

innings to win the match. Mark Ainsbury (60), who opened the batting, was the spine of the Dampier innings. After seeing two early wickets fall, Dampier were in trouble until Jake Trewin (18) joined Ainsbury at the crease to arrest the slide and build a 45 run partnership. Paul Rowe (15) fell just as he was beginning to gain some momentum. Mark Saunders (23) was able to provide good support as he and Ainsbury set themselves to knock off the runs. But the loss of the sixth wicket, Saunders, with the score on 131 and Ainsbury a few overs later opened the game up. The Dampier tail were not able to

bring the game home eventually being bowled out for 152. Nickol won the WPCA premiership, while Mark Ainsbury from Dampier was judged player of the grand final. The association awards for the 2012/13 season were also presented. Matt Nowotny (Nickol) was awarded both the batting average and aggregate and Paul Marion (Pegs Creek) similarly took out both the bowling average and aggregate awards. Clint Degebrodt (Pegs Creek) took out the fielding award. We are calling for expressions of interest in playing winter cricket in Karratha on Sundays. Interested persons should email Gavin winter.cricket@yahoo.com.
