Karratha resident Guy Shepherd recently bought a mint condition 1930 Model A Ford from Perth and has been snapping pictures of it ever since. “When I bought the car I drove it around and saw how all the reflections in the headlight looked really good so I thought that would make a good canvas for photos,” Guy said. These photos were taken using a Pentax K10D camera and Sigma 70-200 lens at Dampier.

Easter traffic behaviour improves despite hoon charge Pilbara Traffic Police have commended road users over the Easter period, adding the amount of traffic on highways was heavier than ever seen before. Sergeant Col Johnson, Pilbara District Traffic Coordinator, said overall travellers were well behaved. “For the amount of traffic that was around it went reasonably well,” he said. “There were no serious crashes and no deaths recorded in the district. “I worked the North West Coastal Highway down toward Coral Bay and the amount of traffic on Friday, in particular, was phenomenal. “I’ve been here for 15 years and I haven’t seen traffic like that since I’ve been here. “Overall, [we’re] generally pretty happy with people’s behaviour on the highway.

Made from recycled NEWSPAPER

“That being said we also [issued] five tickets for $1,000 for speeding.” Mr Johnson said a $1,000 speeding fine would be issued when a driver is travelling 41-44 kilometres per hour over the posted speed limit. Over the Easter period police issued one summons to court and 239 infringements for speeding, including a hoon charge and vehicle seizure to a driver travelling at 161km per hour on the Great Northern Highway. A total of 15 vehicles were impounded, including one hoon offence and 14 drivers licence offences. Around the whole Pilbara region, 966 offenders failed random breath tests with 14 persons charged with drink driving. Police said 34 persons were charged for driving licence offenses, such as expired drivers licences or driving under suspension, and 76 other infringements were issued.

shutdown update Woodside, as operator of Pluto LNG (Pluto) and Karratha Gas Plant (KGP), takes seriously its commitment to safe and reliable operations.

Planned shutdowns are part of ongoing maintenance activities at Pluto and KGP. Pluto will commence its first routine maintenance shutdown in early April. During the shutdown, there will be a period of time when there is no flare and this is normal. At KGP, a shutdown will commence in early May. During both shutdowns, there may be periods of increased flaring and the potential for dark smoke. Every effort is made to reduce flaring during shutdowns as well as in times of normal operations, when some flaring can be expected. Flaring is an essential process for safe operations of a gas plant and is normal industry practice.

The 26-year-old deceased man who lived in Perth and worked in Karratha was visiting the popular camping destination for an Easter holiday. Investigations are still continuing but police said findings indicate the man had fallen from the top of the gorge, a 70-metre drop.

Tourism funding grants available to Pilbara operators

LOST DOGS

2 brown dogs lost on 27/2/13 on SAMSON Road POINT SAMSON

By Ben Leahy Pilbara tourism operators are being encouraged to apply for government grants awarded to businesses that invest in local tourism projects. The T-Qual Grants – Tourism Quality Projects program provides funding on a dollar for dollar principle to businesses spending between $15,000 and $100,000 on small-scale projects. The grants are funded by the Federal Government and awarded to tourism operators all over the country. But despite 20 grants being awarded in Western Australia since 2011, no Pilbara tourism operator has received funding through the program. Karratha Visitor Centre manager Barry Harris said he had been trying to alert local operators to opportunities provided by the T-Qual Grants. “[The T-Qual Grants are] free money and while everyone is trying to get tourism back and happening in the Pilbara, it is interesting that there

has been no feedback on it at all,” Mr Harris said. He said the Karratha Visitor Centre was this year applying for a grant to help purchase a bus that would enable it to operate new tours to MillstreamChichester National Park and the Harding River Dam. But other operators remain unaware of the program. Brad Beaumont from Discovery Sailing Adventures, which runs fishing and boat charters from Dampier, said he had not heard of the T-Qual Grants despite being a member of the North West Tourism board. He said he thought the grants could be marketed better but was “very interested” in applying for one. Brodie Brown from West Moore Island Fishing Lodge in Cape Lambert had also not heard of the grants. He said such grants would help his company as it regularly invested in its business, including purchasing a bus to pick up customers from Karratha

airport and refitting its charter boats. Mr Brown said any kind of help was welcome as he had noticed the local Female Vizsla tourismHungarian market dropping off‘MALI this year’ compared to last. with a grey face With West Moore Island relying on visitors from Perth, Mr Brown said high Hungarian airfares on Vizsla top of ‘traditionally BOONIE’ Male high operating costs in the Pilbara had made it tough for his business to offer Brother & sister are short hair tan competitive prices. would tails actually dogs“People with docked andprefer floppyto spend their money offshore and go ears somewhere like Bali,” Mr Brown said. 2 brown dogs lost on 27/2/13 on But despite the ongoing problems SAMSON Road POINT SAMSON tourism in the Mr Harris 0401 101 Iffor found please callPilbara, Melinda on 0400 323 481 or Paul on Female Hungarian Vizsla ‘MALI’ with a grey face. from the Karratha Visitor Centre said the grants showed that local operators Male Hungarian Vizsla ‘BOONIE’. could find support. Experts have built a database of information about threatened Pilbara animal and plant species at a three-day workshop held in Perth earlier this month. More than 55 scientists, traditional owners and other experts shared information and biodiversity management strategies at the workshop with a report of their findings due out in May. Workshop organiser and principal research scientist Dr Stephen van Leeuwen from the Department of Environment and Conservation said the workshop attracted participants with diverse backgrounds. “It was very important that we had people with experience in working with traditional owners on the land as well as biological scientists, economists and people responsible for developing policies and making decisions,” Dr van Leeuwen said. “The results of the workshop will provide invaluable information for managing land across the Pilbara in a way that mitigates threats for these species.” The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation will now analyse the

One of Western Australia’s most remarkable natural events, the annual coral mass spawning in our North West, has been unfolding this week, turning the waters along our coral reefs pink. Department of Environment and Conservation marine science program leader Chris Simpson said the autumn spawning, which typically took place seven to 10 nights after the March full moon, was predicted to occur this year between April 3 and today, April 6. “Mass coral spawning looks something like a pink underwater snowstorm caused by numerous colonies of many coral species releasing their reproductive eggs at the same time,” he said. “The colour is due to the reddish-pink hue of the buoyant coral eggs that come from the most common spawning species, Acropora sp. “Evidence suggests that synchronised nocturnal spawning occurs to maximise successful fertilisation and it happens at night to minimise predation by plankton-eating fish.” Dr Simpson said the coral spawning was a spectacular natural event that members of the community could see in the Dampier Archipelago, Ningaloo Marine Park and Abrolhos Islands.

• Dr Ray Masini observes coral spawning off the WA coast - Photo by Dr Chris Simpson “The predictable nature of coral spawning, which usually goes for around two hours from about 7:30pm, makes it possible for people to experience the event by diving or using a glassbottom bucket and a torch,” he said. “They might also see other species such as starfish, sea cucumbers and polychaete worms, which often spawn at the same time.”

Artists reflect on COMING SOON Pilbara beauty AT M O O N R I S E C I N E M A

By Ben Leahy Two award winning Karratha artists will exhibit works exploring life in the Pilbara at the Karratha Visitor Centre throughout April. Oil painter Waling Gorospe and watercolor painter Marinda Van der Walt joined guests to open their “Reflections” exhibition at a launch party at the visitor centre on Friday April 5. Philippine-born Gorospe said the artists were showing their paintings to get locals to see and think about the beauty of the region. “Even some of the locals don’t know what there is to see in the Pilbara,” Gorospe said. Gorospe moved to Karratha in 2011 and has since created a series of large-scale paintings that portray the Pilbara landscape in vivid detail. “I love the layers building up to make any image,” Gorospe said. “It’s a work that seems, from afar, realistic, but close up, you can see all of the brush strokes.” Van der Walt, by contrast, likes to offset the Pilbara’s natural beauty against signs of human

activity, such as industry and cultural objects. “[Industry] is a recurring theme to prompt reflection on the environmental legacy this generation leaves behind: land scarred for decades and often lifeless,” Van der Walt has said in written pieces about her works. Trained in Fine Arts,

South African-born Van der Walt is a two-time winner at the Cossack Art Awards and recent winner in the Works on paper category at last month’s Dampier Art Awards. Gorospe won the People’s Choice at last year’s Cossack awards and has exhibited in cities, such as Hong Kong and Singapore.

NUTRITION by April Butt

This week’s health condition in focus is Arthritis What is Arthritis? Arthritis is an inflammatory condition of the musculoskeletal systems (muscles and bones). The condition results in pain, swelling, stiffness and damage to the cartilage, which is the tissue covering the ends of the bones. This damage leads to the bones rubbing up against each other rather than being supported by cushy membranes, causing extreme pain. It is commonly thought that this is a condition affecting only the elderly, which is in fact untrue. It affects 3.85 million Australians and 2.4 million of those suffering are of working age. The cause of arthritis is dependant on the type of arthritis (there are

100 different arthritic conditions) but common causes include injury, abnormal metabolism, wear and tear of the joint, infections, inheritance and overactive immunity. Although the cause of the condition may at times be out of our hands, there are many ways we can reduce the pain and inflammation associated with the condition.

the top offenders. This food encourages inflammation within the body. 3. Get fresh! Load your daily diet full of fresh fruit and vegetables. This helps to regulate the pH of your blood and in turn, regulate inflammation. The antioxidants in these foods also improve the functioning of your immunity. 4. Avoid damaged fats, such as deep fried food products and trans fats found largely in packaged cakes, biscuits, crackers, potato chips and muesli bars. These encourage inflammation and also inhibit the action of omega 3 within the body, which we need working at full steam to create anti-inflammatory compounds. 5. Get active! Although feeling a bit stiff and in pain numerous studies have found physical activity to be affective in reducing the pain associated with arthritis. Try a gentle walk or even swimming for low impact options.

Here are my top tips: 1. Consume Omega 3 fatty acids, these are used in the body to create antiinflammatory compounds. Top sources are oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines and tuna. Nuts and seeds such as walnuts and flaxseeds and linseeds. In extreme cases a supplement may be needed, seek professional help first. 2. Avoid acidic foods on a regular basis. Refined sugar, coffee and tea, white flour products and alcohol are

Rio installs new shiploader at Cape Lambert Rio Tinto has taken a major step forward in its expansion of its Pilbara operations, with the installation of a new shiploader with a nominal 55m tonne annual capacity on the new wharf at Cape Lambert. The shiploader was swung from the BigLift vessel and placed directly on to its rails on the wharf, which will eventually extend 1.4 kilometres from shore. The shiploader was manufactured offshore and transported to the Pilbara in modular form by the specialist heavy-lift ship. The modular design of the 1,000-tonne shiploader meant it was unloaded and set in place in on the wharf in a few days. This minimised the safety hazard in the works and improved the construction time. Rio Tinto Pilbara Projects chief operating officer Michael Gollschewski said the shiploader was a major component of infrastructure in the expansion programme and it was exciting to see it secured in place. “The last time we received a new shiploader was in 2007, also at Cape Lambert, on the existing wharf as part of the capacity expansion to 220 million tonnes a year,” Mr Golschewski said. “This is a powerful visible reminder that we are progressing rapidly towards the reaching our interim target of achieving 290m tonne annual capacity for the Pilbara operations. “The shiploader joins the two new stackers, two reclaimers and a new car dumper in the newly constructed stockyard for the Cape Lambert expansion. “[This] means all of our major coastal infrastructure for the 290 Mt/a project is now safely on site and in place ensuring a major element of risk has now been resolved.” The expansion is progressing rapidly and to schedule, with a variety of inland mine, rail and support infrastructure projects also forging ahead. The new Cape Lambert wharf is being constructed in two stages with the first stage to be completed in the third quarter of 2013, consisting of a two-sided berth that will provide facilities and loading for two very large ore carriers with the capacity to deliver up to 250,000 tonnes of iron ore to each. Work on the second stage, will add a 400-metre wharf extension with another two berths, this second stage is already well advanced, with all dredging requirements and majority of piling now completed. Once all works have been completed the Cape Lambert port will have the largest export capacity of the three iron ore port assets owned by Rio Tinto.

Tips on refinancing your home loan The latest home loan figures show that Western Australians are now refinancing at high levels. Each month in Western Australia homes loans valued at more than $400m are refinanced. There are currently a large number of home loan options open to homeowners considering refinancing their home loans and they should carefully consider the following points before making a decision on a new home loan package. If you are considering refinancing your home loan, it

might be worthwhile looking at your overall financial position. For example, if you have significant personal debts these could be refinanced as part of the home loan at a much lower monthly interest rate. During a time of rising interest rates, more homeowners consider fixing their mortgage. If you’re locking into a longterm fixed interest rate for three or five years consider what your personal circumstances might be over such a long period of time. By fixing your home loan over a longer period of time you reduce your financial flexibility, which

may prove difficult, if, for example, you want to move to a new home. Fixed home loan products also limit the amount of money you can pay off the home loan. This can prove a problem if you want to reduce your home loan borrowings in a shorter period of time. If you would like to take an advantage of long term fixed interest rates then it might be more preferable to fix part of the home loan. This will give you the advantage of being able to pay off your home loan faster and also give you an insurance policy against the

If you are considering refinancing your home loan, it might be worthwhile looking at your overall financial position

impact of rising interest rates. Check the break costs of your existing home loan. If you have enjoyed a discounted home loan rate for a short period of time (honeymoon rate) then it is likely there will be stiff penalties for breaking the home loan contract. The breaking costs of the existing home loan may be greater than the savings from moving to a new home loan provider. Check the fine print of any new home loan products being offered by competitors. You may find that there may be establishment fees and longerterm higher interest rates under the terms of a new home loan contract. Consider speaking to a qualified mortgage broker about a home loan product that might be more appropriate to your personal circumstances. Financial institutions are constantly bringing new products into the market and they may have launched a new product. If you have a number of home loans, it may worth consolidating these loans with one lender who will offer a discounted home loan rate as well as additional features if the combined amount is above a certain level of borrowings. Decide what features are really important when choosing a home loan. Additional facilities such as off set accounts or line of credit may carry additional costs. However, if you want ‘no frills’ loan with a low interest rate then consider choosing a budget style variable home loan product. Source: Mortgage Solutions Australia

Maintenance the difference between life and death The Department of Fire and Emergency Services is asking all building managers and owners to ensure that firefighting services and equipment in their buildings are maintained correctly. complacency. “An emergency can occur at any time and the middle of an emergency is not the time to hope that all the systems operate correctly,” he said. “An ‘it will never happen’ mindset is one of the major contributors in poor building safety preparedness. “The maintenance of older apartment buildings are a particular concern.” DFES recommends firefighting services and equipment are regularly maintained by specialised and competent service providers. Firefighting services and equipment should be maintained in accordance with the 2012 edition of Australian Standards 1851. Building facility managers and owners can contact the Fire Protection Association of Australia for fire industry maintenance professionals. The FPAA has a list of members who are bound by a Code of Practice

DFES Superintendent Paul Ryan said regular maintenance of building fire safety systems could mean the difference between life and death. “It is very important that building fire safety systems are regularly maintained and ready for immediate use by firefighters,” Mr Ryan said. “Well maintained services provide firefighters with confidence that the equipment will operate effectively during a fire. “Although most managers and owners do the right thing there have been a number of building fires within Perth where building fire safety systems have not been regularly maintained and this places the lives of our firefighters, residents and occupants at risk. “We have been very lucky that no serious injury or loss of life has occurred.” Mr Ryan said facility managers and owners had a duty of care towards building occupants and warned against

Negotiating real estate fees with an agent Ensure your agent is licensed.

Published by:

To check if your agent is licensed, or if the sales representative employed by the agent is registered, visit the Consumer Protection section of the Department of Commerce website and do an online search (www. commerce.wa.gov.au/consumerprotection). Consumer Protection is responsible for the licensing of real estate agents and registration of sales representatives, in addition to regulating their conduct. By dealing with a licensed agent or a registered sales representative who is employed by a licensed agent, you are assured that they have passed certain relevant educational standards. You may also be protected by an insurance scheme known as the Fidelity Guarantee Account if you suffer financial loss due to certain actions of a licensed agent or an agency staff member. For further information concerning the Fidelity Guarantee Account visit the Consumer Protection website. Compare fees and the quality of services Before an agent can perform any services for you, the agent is required by law to have a written agreement signed by you that authorises them to act on your behalf. This agreement is called a “Written Authority”, an “Appointment to Act” or an “Authority to Act”. Before you sign a Written Authority you should safeguard your interests by comparing the fees and services of several agents, much the same way as you would get several quotes before hiring a tradesperson.

Breda Ryan: 08 9141 9106

You should also carefully read the conditions of the Written Authority. Also note that real estate agents can no longer charge a letting fee to the tenant under a residential tenancy agreement. You might also wish to ask if the agent has professional indemnity insurance. If you feel uncomfortable dealing with an agent by yourself, you might want to have a friend or relative with you to help ask questions and negotiate the best fee for service. Selecting an agent to sell your home Generally, agents employ sales representatives, who will be the people liaising with sellers and buyers of property. Although all sales representatives must be registered with Consumer Protection, it is the agent who supervises them and is ultimately responsible for the sale of your property and any other dealings you have with the agency. You can assess an agent’s suitability by attending other home opens to see them in action or asking for a free market appraisal of your property. Be aware that a market appraisal is what the agent considers to be the current market price of the property. It is not a valuation, which is a formal and detailed assessment of the property’s value carried out by a licensed valuer for a fee. Some marketing and service questions you may need to ask the agent include: • Are you a member of a relevant industry body, for example, the Real Estate Institute of WA? • What are your skills and experience?

What is your knowledge of my local area?

How will you determine the market value of my property?

Will a For Sale sign be erected on the property?

Will home-opens be conducted, and how many will there be?

Which agency staff members will conduct the home open inspections and negotiations with interested purchasers, and what are the skills and experience of those staff members?

Which websites, newspapers or specialist real estate publications will the property be advertised in?

How often will the ads be placed and what information will be included in them?

Will the selling fee (the agent’s commission) include advertising and marketing costs? Note that this and all other fees and charges can be negotiated (see the section Written Authorities and sales transactions).

If advertising and marketing costs are to be separate from the selling fee, what is the maximum amount that will be charged? Ask where these costs are specified in the Written Authority and request an itemised list of the types of advertising to be carried out.

Does the agreement allow for a conjunctional sale to take place?

100 point check to stop scammers In the last few years overseas con artists have managed to sell two properties in Perth that they didn’t own. This was devastating not only to the rightful owners of these properties, but also to the real estate agencies that were caught up in this dreadful situation. In both so-called Nigerian property scams, the criminals were able to fool the selling agent, the settlement agent, the banks and Landgate that they were the title holder and could sell the property. Once the transfers had occurred and the sales settled it became apparent that everyone had been duped, including the legitimate owners of these houses. These property scams had been possible because identity checks had not previously been a requirement as part of the listing process when selling a home. However, as technology has advanced it has become possible for scammers to fake an identity and present themselves to a real estate agent as the legitimate owner of a property when in fact they are not. In response to these frauds, the state government has implemented a system whereby the seller of a property must produce evidence of their identity in much the same way as you do when you open a bank account or sign a mobile phone contract. This means a 100-point check in most cases, through which the seller has

to produce a series of different identity documents such as a passport, driver’s license, rates notice, bank statement and birth certificate. It is almost impossible for such multilayered counterfeit to occur and hugely reduces the risk of property fraud. Real estate agents are finding that the identity checks for people selling property have been well received by the public. Some agents were initially concerned this new onus on sellers might meet with some resistance, especially from long term and repeat clients well known to the agent, but REIWA members report that the public respects this new requirement and embraces it. When sellers are unable to be with the agent at the time of listing their property they must have their identity documents sighted by a witness such as a JP, doctor, police officer or pharmacist. This may be inconvenient to some sellers and agents but it’s a small price to avoid another scam. If you are a seller and wanting to list your property with an agent, don’t be surprised when your real estate agent asks you to provide a series of identification documents to confirm your bona fides even if you have known the agent for a long time. As a seller your cooperation in this regard is helping to safeguard the community and deter the fraudsters. Source: REIWA

Achieving the best market price is not easy without expert assistance

Agents remove the risk Anyone selling a home wants the best price the market will deliver and buyers want the reassurance that the sale price is appropriate. This is why most people use a licensed real estate agent when buying and selling. Agents are trained to arrive at a market sale price for a successful transaction. Achieving the best market price is not easy without expert assistance. Private sellers, for example, tend to over-estimate selling prices and most private sales fail without significant price adjustments. This can result in a final sale price that is actually less than the price which was achievable had the property been marketed correctly. While sellers want to receive the highest price, buyers are keen to pay the least amount and this creates an understandable conflict between the two that an agent will negotiate to the point of agreement.

It can be very hard for a private seller to play this role without an intermediary. The selling price is not the only area of conflict between sellers and buyers. A real estate transaction can be a legal minefield and this is why state laws require licensed real estate agents to comply fully with the agent’s contractual obligations to the owner of the property. Agents also have a legal obligation to represent a property correctly and fairly to a buyer. This legal framework is important because real estate transactions are open to challenges unless proper process is followed. Take for example the sale of strata title properties, which account for a quarter of all property sales. Every time a strata property is sold the buyer must be provided with a package of general and specific information related to that and failure to comply with this risks heavy penalties and may invalidate a contract. The process of buying and selling

strata title properties, in particular, can be so complicated that REIWA has developed specific training courses with detailed checklists for its members. Another area of potential buyerseller conflict is information about services and rights of access on properties, including sewers, drains and reservations by public utilities. If you are a buyer you should know about these matters. If you are the owner there is a responsibility to convey such information, but with private sales these matters are often overlooked and can result in legal dispute. These and other influences on real estate transactions are covered in the standard legal documents accessible by agents. If a problem occurs a seller or buyer can seek assistance from REIWA and the state government. However, if you are involved in a private sale and something goes wrong the best you can do is meet in court which can be expensive and time consuming. Source: REIWA

Building Management and Works complaints and feedback The Department endeavours to act the Complaints and Feedback system to deliver concerns and suggestions. BMW also welcomes commendation where service has exceeded expectation. The complaints and feedback procedure is particularly relevant at moment as the Department seeks to capture and address publicly expressed concerns over nonpayment complaints from subcontractors working on Government

construction projects, managed by BMW.

project-

In the first instance, people working on BMW-managed projects are encouraged to speak directly to the project contractor or BMW’s project manager about their concerns. If further concerns need to be expressed, then people should use Complaints and Feedback system web site at http://www.finance. wa.gov.au/cms/complaints.aspx.

If your building project is not going to plan - help is at hand.

The Western Australia Department of Finance’s Building Management and Works business is encouraging customers concerned with construction standards to contact its Complaints and Feedback system.

interview

Angell back to the bush By Tamara Binamat Musician and songwriter Matt Angell was actually raised in the Pilbara in the early 1970s before embarking on a search for stardom 15 years ago. He is now making a living gigging around the country with his blues and folk tunes drawing fans. “There wasn’t many opportunities in Karratha at the time to be a rock star,” Matt laughed. ”I left Karratha when I was 18 or 19-yearsold to seek a musical career. “I moved to Perth then Melbourne and now I’ve been around Australia about three times playing music. “But I’d always come back to Karratha every couple of years and do some shows.” Matt Angell is a solo act but plays the parts of a whole band, incorporating acoustic guitar, harmonica, singing and a Cajon drum, a Spanish instrument that he plays with his feet. He learnt to play the guitar at 15-yearsold after finding a guitar teacher based at Karratha Primary School. “When I walked in, there was six-year-olds learning to play the guitar and the teacher looked at me a said ’you’re a bit big for this class’,” Matt said. “I didn’t even have a guitar so he leant me a guitar and came to my house after hours and gave me some lessons.

his songwriting. As a teenager in Karratha, Matt’s songs were inspired by classics on 6KA radio such as The Eagles, Deep Purple and Jimi Hendrix. It was also the rugged landscape of the Pilbara that shone through in Matt’s music. “My style I think reflects the area,” Matt said. “Its quite sparse and barren with a bit of a rough edge to it.” Matt will be performing a mix of originals music and covers such as Johnny Cash, Rodriguez and Neil Young. The Pilbara Echo has three signed copies of Matt’s latest album Five Songs to give away. To win, email a photograph of yourself doing something musical to news@ pilbaraecho.com.au.

Port Hedland Hospital KARRATHA / DAMPIER TEEBALL ASSOCIATION would like to announce that the

AGM for the 2013 Season will be held on

I, Tom would like to express my gratitude towards the staff at Port Hedland Hospital. I am a ‘FIFO’ from Perth and I took ill earlier this week. The Camp doctor advised me to go to Port Hedland Hospital. The doctors and nurses there were wonderful. They were professional, patient and helpful. They answered all of my questions and I was greeted with smiles. Their attitude to me went a long way to restoring my faith in human kindness.

Tuesday 9th April at 7pm at the Department of Sport and Recreation Offices 3813 Balmoral Road Karratha (Between Jasmine Restaurant and LJ Hookers) All Committee positions will be vacant and available.

The Under 15s division has kicked off their first season in full swing, after gradings and team selections. The construction site for the new Leisureplex next door is a reminder of the brand new courts and timers the Karratha Basketball Association can look forward to in a few months time. The club is always on the lookout for coaches and umpires. If you can help, please get in touch with the Association at karrathabasketball@gmail.com.

Karratha’s Little League Baseball players stepped into the big league over the March 23 weekend as they made it to the grand final of the regional championships in Port Hedland. Karratha’s Pilbara Cyclones team of 11 and 12 - year - olds played four games over the weekend against the Pilbara Miners from Newman and the Port Hedland Reds. In game one, the Cyclones started well against the hometown team, before losing focus in the fourth innings when five Red’s players scored runs to lead their team to 13 to

With both pitchers on top, runs were hard to come by as batters were repeatedly struck out. Excellent fielding also limited the runs as the Hedland Reds eventually nosed their way in front to win 4 to 2. The win gave the Reds the right to compete in the Easter weekend’s State championships, while Karratha’s Pilbara Cyclones have to wait until next year for a shot at the title. The Cyclones would like to thank Raw Hire for their support as well as the Port Hedland Reds for their hospitality in helping the team find accommodation at the Andrew Andrew McLaughlin Centre.

six victory. Having learnt their lesson from the first game, it was the Cyclones who then maintained focus late in the second game against the Miners to bring home five runners home in the fifth innings. The late runs gave the Cyclones a hard fought 13 to 12 win. The Cyclones backed up this result the next day to earn their place in the grand final by beating the Miners again in an equally tense game finishing at 12 to 11. While the Reds entered the grand final as favourites, Karratha’s Cyclones were undeterred and fought hard in another nail biting encounter.

For Pilbara residents, travelling is a constant problem facing any sporting or student group. Before anything happens, the flights will cost in the region of $500 each. Such was the case for the most recent St Luke’s College victorious swimming team, which comprised of 29 swimmers and two accompanying staff. It was only in the last few weeks that the entire trip could be confirmed as the cost had been prohibitive. Thanks to the support from the major sponsor MAC Villages and additional support from the North West Shelf Project’s Karratha Education Initiative and the Shire of Roebourne, the team of 29 was assisted with a financial commitment.

St Luke’s College would like to thank these benefactors who demonstrate a community commitment to enable young people reach their potential. All the more gratifying is the fact that the financial assistance has led to the students winning the Associated Catholic Colleges swimming carnival. This is no mean feat when they are competing against metropolitan schools such as Aranmore Catholic College. St Luke’s is proud to be associated with businesses and organisations that service the Pilbara and it is also appreciative of the direct assistance provided to the students. This is the first win that St Luke’s College has had in this level of competition and they did so comprehensively. They were Overall Winners, they won the Senior Girls and the Overall Girls.

The boys were also very successful in coming second in all their categories. Under the direction of Mel Kearney of St Luke’s College and the assistance of Brom from the Karratha Swimming Club, the students competed in a very professional manner demonstrating the calibre of the Pilbara and St Luke’s College students. The win represented a success for St Luke’s College and also for the Karratha community. With the support of the school, parents, MAC villages, North West Shelf Project, Shire of Roebourne and the Karratha swimming club, it can be genuinely described as a win for the Pilbara. Life is proving to be a ball for the Pilbara’s top under-16 footballers as they begin a journey that could one day lead them into the elite ranks of the Australian Football League. More than 60 young players selected from Hedland, the Western desert and the Shires of Roebourne and Ashburton were inducted into the North West Talent Academy during a oneday camp in Dampier in March. The boys will now vie for a spot on the North West WA team

“We are hoping to put good kids back into the community with more knowledge that they can share with everybody.” The boys now face a six-week preseason curriculum in their hometowns before meeting as a group again in the next school holidays. The boys will learn lessons about professionalism, such as the use of ice baths in recovery, while National Rugby League development officer Chris Newman even came along to Dampier to give them a lesson in tackling. Clint said it was all helping to produce better footy and get more community members involved. “Footy in the North West is getting really big and exciting, there is SIZZLING more pressure, it’s cleaner, it’s nicer and SUMMER it is highly skilled and DEAL! it is great to have so many keen parents volunteer to help,” Clint said.

compete against division one teams, like Victoria and South Australia, North West WA’s Under 16 team was a runaway winner in division three in last year’s national championships in just its first year in the carnival. That creates fierce competition for spots in the North West team. With Gascoyne and Kimberly kids also representing the team, just 20 out of 130 Pilbara academy players made it into the North West squad last year. But Clint said the academy had a broader focus than just producing good footy players. “It is not just about that end result of elite representation, it is actually about the journey,” Clint said. “We look to also give the kids life education and put positive mentors, male and female, in front of them.
