POLICE WATCH 1 We are in school holidays and the weather is great for being on the water. The sea is a wonderful place when calm but as you all know the weather can change in an instant. This week’s article is written by First Class Constable Holly Cusack from North West Water Police and is all about water safety.

For Holly, boating is about having fun and enjoying our amazing North West coast. But there is a lot more to driving a boat than meets the eye. You can’t just get into a plane and fly it without training, and the same applies to boats. There are just as many hazards on the water as in the sky and the skipper needs to be

aware of what could go wrong and be prepared in case it does. We don’t all have to be salty sea dogs to safely take a boat to sea but you need basic seafaring skills. I can’t give you these skills in one article, but I can tell you what I do before I head to sea. Check the weather forecast and stay ashore if warnings are current or the weather appears

doubtful. Make sure that a responsible person knows the description of your boat, the number of passengers, where you are going and your expected time of return or arrival. Check your boat to make sure it is seaworthy and that drain plugs are tightly inserted. Ensure the motor is running properly. Check that all the required safety equipment is on board and in good condition, easily accessible and everyone going out on the boat knows how to use it. As a Water Police Officer I cannot stress enough the importance of safety equipment. Even experienced mariners often under estimate how unpredictable the ocean is and how easy it is to come unstuck at sea.

Bulgarra residents oppose highdensity development By Ben Leahy Having hurriedly come together in the past two months, Bulgarra residents last week successfully lobbied to reduce the height and apartment density of a proposed three-storey development along Samson Way. Developers had proposed to build three-storey complexes containing 89 apartments and an additional 18 granny flats on a 1.77 hectare site next to the town’s Anglican Church and the Karratha Hills. However, worried residents collected 200 signatures and sent the Shire 23 submissions with concerns the highdensity housing would bring a transient rental population, increased traffic flow in a school zone and anti-social behavior to a predominantly family area. This led the Shire Council to last week amend the planning density so that the development would contain fewer apartments, be restricted to two-storeys, have a better traffic management plan and not impede views of the Karratha Hills. A long time Bulgarra resident, who did not wish to be named, said locals had acted because the development proposal did not blend with the character of the existing suburb. “[It was] a bit of a shock at just the sheer scale of the development because when you add up the number
of dwellings on it, count them all up, it is over 100 and the Samson and Turner Way loop [of roads] only has 74 homes,” the resident said. “So whereas this [development] was being described as infill, it was in fact going to outnumber the established homes.” The residents’ concern with the Samson Way development comes as seven more lots of land in Karratha are earmarked for development under a Lazy Lands policy that is seeking to convert drainage and parks reserves into residential infill. For Bulgarra residents, many of the issues they had with the Samson Way development stemmed from how late they heard about it. Although the Shire and Pilbara Development Commission publicly advertised in a local newspaper, placed a sign on the site and notified some adjoining residents on Samson Way, many didn’t hear about the development until one resident began door knocking. As a result, only one community member turned up to the Shire’s first public meeting about the development. However, once more residents became aware of the development, the Shire scheduled another public meeting, extended the deadline for submissions and ultimately amended the planning

density covering the lot. Residents will now get to have a further say on the development once the developer presents a revised plan to the Shire Council.

And while some residents might have hoped to see no construction on the lot, the Shire and PDC said they are committed to the Lazy Lands developments as a way of growing Karratha into a city of 50,000 people. “The real message about this is as residents you have to make yourself better informed,” the longtime Bulgarra resident told the Pilbara Echo. “The Shire can only look at or respond to what is put forward in accordance with the procedures. “So if you’ve got problems, you’ve got to get them synthesized down to written submissions by a fixed date.” He said residents living near the seven other Lazy Lands lots in Bulgarra, Pegs Creek and Millars Well, who have concerns, should become involved in discussions about these developments as soon as they are advertised. Maps showing which Lazy Lands lots are set to be developed can be viewed on the Shire’s website.

shutdown update Woodside, as operator of Pluto LNG (Pluto) and Karratha Gas Plant (KGP), takes seriously its commitment to safe and reliable operations.
Planned shutdowns are part of ongoing maintenance activities at Pluto and KGP. Pluto commenced its first routine maintenance shutdown earlier this month. As a result, there may have been a period of time when the flare was not visible and this is normal. At KGP, a shutdown will commence in early May. During both shutdowns, there may be periods of increased flaring and the potential for dark smoke. Every effort is made to reduce flaring during shutdowns as well as in times of normal operations, when some flaring can be expected. Flaring is an essential process for safe operations of a gas plant and is normal industry practice.

Joshua was playing a football match at Mosman Park when, in the second quarter, he received a knock to the head.
Australian Amateur Football League board this March committed to supporting clubs purchasing Automatic External Defibrillators.
Joshua tried to get up but fell unconscious and went into cardiac arrest.
While a number of clubs already have an AED, the WAAFL said they see these devices as becoming part of a club’s standard medical equipment in the future.
First aid was applied at the football field until the ambulance arrived, but the young man was tragically pronounced dead one hour after arriving at Fremantle Hospital. Joshua’s mother, Siobhan Stanley, said the coroner’s report was unable to determine the cause of death. “The doctor said they couldn’t find anything wrong with [Josh], it was just a freak thing,” explained Siobhan. “I asked [the] doctor, ‘If [the sports club] had a defibrillator would it have made a difference?’ and he said, ‘It most probably would have’.”
Join us on Saturday May 4 from 1pm to 4pm for a closing down party at the Karratha Aquatic Centre. FREE pool entry, aquaruns and sausage sizzle! For information contact the Shire of Roebourne on 9186 8555.
Saving Lives paramedics have also created ‘Hendo’s Sign’, named after Joshua. When players make the sign, they place their arms across their chests to indicate a problem and let others know the need to get a defibrillator on the ground and commence CPR. Saving Lives paramedics have donated a defibrillator to Siobhan, which she will present to the Karratha Kats Football Club, where she has two sons playing football.
Despite still grieving for her son, that set Siobhan on a mission to ensure every amateur football club has access to a defebrillator.
“Basically the WAAFL have taken it on and by the end of 2014 at a much subsidized rate defibrillators will be in every club in the state,” Siobhan said.
Thanks to her tireless campaigning, the West
“In the depths of my grief and very early on,
it was something that I had to do. “It brings me a lot of comfort to know that when people are being trained in [defibrillation], Hendo’s Sign is going to be part of it. “It’s absolutely legacy to my son.
“It’s been the worst year of my life but if I can do something to save another family from going through what my family’s been through this year, then I’m doing something good. “I’m doing something great.” Last Saturday April 13, a one-year memorial was held in Joshua’s honour. The Mosman Park Football Club signified the event with a tree planting, and named the kiosk after him because, as Siobhan says, Josh was a big eater. “It was a very special day and very important,” Siobhan said. “The club great job.

MDC ladies shovel for a good cause By Tamara Binamat Six women gathered at 6pm on a Monday evening, dressed in their new pink outfits and looking forward to dinner together later. They then grabbed their shovels, tied their boots and proceeded to shovel 15 tonnes of salt into bags. The Karratha Mothers Day Classic committee is coordinating a fun walk/ run to raise money for breast cancer research on Mothers Day 2013. The event will raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The Karratha committee has been busy holding fundraisers and raising sponsorship for the Mothers Day Classic in Karratha. Last Monday night the ladies arrived at Rotary Karratha’s salt bagging fundraiser to pack 20kg bags of salt, receiving a $500 donation from Rotary.
“Three months ago the [Mothers Day Classic] was not going ahead,” said Rebecca Jarvis, Karratha MDC chairperson. “The businesses around Karratha have been incredibly generous, and we’ve been able to band together in a short amount of time to get it happening this year.” Rebecca said being part of the committee is a chance to give back to the community. “Were raising really important funds but also awareness for a really important cause – breast cancer research,” she said. “But it’s also an opportunity to do something great for the community. “It’s a fabulous event that been running for two years now on Mothers Day.” The ladies on the committee are very passionate about this cause, with members that have been personally affected by breast cancer, and others
that have been touched by the illness. After shovelling 15 tonnes of salt, Rebecca said the fundraising effort was a success. “Absolutely worth it!” she said. “It’s hard work but all the money is going to a great cause and it’s been a great experience for the community as well.”

• ADVERTORIAL
New conveyor service centres announced Local Goodyear conveyor belt manufacturer, Veyance Technologies, has announced a $4.5 million investment in establishing a network of company-owned conveyor belt services, training and repair facilities. This investment confirms ongoing company commitment to deliver owners their ‘lowest cost per tonne conveyed’ benefit. The Service Centres which will assist with all types of conveyor belting, both surface and underground, will be located at the major mining hubs around Australia. Veyance Technologies have advised that their new Conveyor Service Centres will provide global cutting edge technology in vulcanising, condition monitoring, training and conveyor belting maintenance. These ‘greenfield’ Service Centres will be staffed by qualified Veyance personnel and remove the company’s current reliance on local engineering firms to optimise, maintain and service conveyor belts. The initial centre in Mackay is already fully operational, with a second centre in the Pilbara, based in Karratha, currently in the process of coming on stream.

Our objective is to help our valued customers achieve lowest cost per tonne conveyed. “We will also provide belt survey audits, conveyor inspections and design and selection advice as required” he added. The Department of Commerce invites small to medium sized businesses in the Pilbara region to attend a Business Development Information Briefing Breakfast in Karratha on 30 May. The purpose of the Briefing is to provide small to medium sized local businesses details about State and Commonwealth Government assistance programs and the State and Commonwealth Governments’ approach to supporting regional businesses to access opportunities in both Government purchasing and resource projects. Topics covered will include industry assistance programs, how to sell to Government and State and Commonwealth policies and guidelines. Similar Briefings have been conducted in Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Albany, Collie, Mandurah and Northam. Feedback from companies in these regions has been positive, with many saying they believe the information was beneficial and relevant to their needs and the sessions provided a valuable networking opportunity. LJ Hooker Karratha principal David Hipworth said statistics showing Karratha’s population grew faster than any other Australian mining community underlined the area’s investment potential. Karratha’s population grew at a rate more than five times higher than the national average between 2006 and 2011, according to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
The Pilbara region accounted for three of the top five mining growth areas, with Newman (7.3 per cent) and Port Hedland (4.5 per cent) ranked third and fifth respectively. The population growth, fuelled by employment opportunities in the region’s resources projects, had contributed to rents reaching $1,800 per week for low-set three bedroom houses in Karratha, while the sale prices for the same home would be in the order of $800,000. “At Newman, you could expect to pay between $1,500 to $1,800 for a basic three bedroom home,” Mr Hipworth said. “Yields have lessened a little lately, but investors currently field around 9 per cent to 10 per cent returns.’’ Mr. Hipworth said there were still significant opportunities ahead for Karratha despite the fast-paced population growth possibly slowing in the last 12 months as mining companies took stock of their project pipelines. He said the rapid growth had dramatically transformed Karratha during the past 20-years in which he has been selling real estate in the town. “The minerals sector will push Karratha along for some time yet, but between 2006 and 2011, the town, and the wider Pilbara for that region, recorded significant population growth,’’ he said. “The rate of growth since 2011 probably slowed a little bit but, in comparative terms, it still has a dynamic feel and energy about it that any regional town would want. “There are new resources sector projects proposed, and, as along as the demand for well-paid jobs exists, strong population growth will continue. “Karratha, Newman and Port Hedland will continue to attract ambitious men and women seeking the lifestyle the mining sector affords.’’
The township grew from 13,257 residents in 2006 to 20,061 in 2011, according to Census figures – an average annual increase of 8.6 per cent – while the national average stood at 1.6 per cent.

Builder sentiment improves but activity lags
The March quarter 2013 Master Builders National Survey of Building and Construction showed that builders expect the industry to improve in the medium term, but are still struggling in the short term. The survey is another indicator of a difficult short-term recovery after the Australian Bureau of Statistics building approvals figures released last week showed a small upturn in residential building and further decline in non-residential building. Peter Jones the chief economist of Master Builders Australia said that while signs of a recovery may be beginning to emerge for the industry, the upswing is coming from a very low base and questions remain about its strength. “The turnaround in the survey sentiment suggests previous interest rate cuts may be beginning to take hold, but builders are yet to see any benefit from the rate reductions,” Mr
Jones said. “Builders reported less work on the books than in the previous quarter, sales contracts remained essentially unchanged and profits remain weak.”
a strong “recovery in the building and construction sector is vital for Australia’s economy.
“The good news for builders came in some of the industry’s forward indicators. “Display centre traffic and commercial enquiries increased markedly in the quarter
Housing finance figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on April 15 show some positive signs for the building industry, but more must follow to confirm a recovery. The total number of dwelling commitments rose 2.0 per cent in February, seasonally adjusted. The number of commitments for the construction of new dwellings rose 1.5 per cent and commitments for the purchase of new dwellings rose 0.6 per cent, seasonally adjusted. Peter Jones the chief economist from Master Builders Australia said the figures are welcome news for the industry, but a run of positive results is needed to confirm a recovery. “Commitments for the construction

A national survey of more than 500 builders and contractors has revealed an improvement in key indicators in the building industry but no increased activity so far.

and are now higher than the average reading recorded over the past nine years. “Expectations for industry activity and own business activity also rose to levels above the survey’s neutral reading, which suggests there could be improvement for the industry in the short to medium term. “As a major driver of economic growth and employment, a strong recovery in the building and construction sector is vital for Australia’s economy. “The industry has been earmarked by Treasurer Wayne Swan and the Reserve Bank to play a major role lifting the non-mining sectors as the economy loses the mining investment boom as a driver, however, the industry is a long way from filling that gap. “Although the Reserve Bank has done most of the heavy lifting in trying to stimulate nonmining sectors, it must not rule out further interest rate cuts. “The Government must also play their part by creating a more business friendly environment. “It is important State and Territory governments also address supply side constraints and bottlenecks,” Mr Jones said.
and purchase of new dwellings combined rose by 1.2 per cent in February, seasonally adjusted, up 13.5 per cent from February 2012,” Mr Jones said. “This is certainly welcome news, but the industry’s recovery remains anaemic. “In the most recent Master Builders National Survey, builders reported they were confident the industry’s fortunes would improve in the long term, but activity in the short term remains quiet. “While there has been an improvement in sentiment, this by itself will not pay the bills, it must be converted into activity. “The industry needs a sustained run of positive figures to cement a recovery and allow it to really build a head of steam. “The concern is today’s figure could be another in the volatile series of rises and falls witnessed over the past year.”

Warning about late bonds after agent fined $10,000 Consumer Protection has warned real estate agents, property managers and landlords about the penalties for late bond lodgements after an agency was fined $10,000 by the Perth Magistrates Court.
The company was ordered to pay Court costs of $275. Consumer Protection told the Court that the bond money totalling almost $60,000 was collected between February and November 2011 from 27 tenants who had rented properties in various suburbs including Mosman Park,
Nedlands, Cottesloe, Claremont, Wembley Downs and Maylands. At the time of the offences, the agency was required to either lodge the bonds with the Bond Administrator (administered by Consumer Protection) or in a separate tenancy bond trust account with an authorised financial institution, as soon as practicable. From July 1 this year, all bonds must be lodged only with the Bond Administrator. Commissioner for Consumer Protection Anne Driscoll said,
in the Acton case, bonds were being lodged with the Bond Administrator one to three months after collection and the agency had been warned on several occasions. “For real estate agents, there should be no reason why bonds cannot be lodged the following business day,” Ms Driscoll said. “Consumer Protection will take action against agents or landlords who retain these funds for an unreasonable amount of time and fail to comply with the law.”

Millennium’s Nullagine gold project opens
Financial Markets By Brenton Reynolds
Millennium Minerals Limited achieved a major milestone last week with the official opening of the company’s flagship gold mine at Nullagine.
After performing as badly as the Melbourne Football Club two weeks back, the ASX200 rebounded during the week ending Friday April 12 to close 122 points higher for a 2.5 per cent week-on-week rise – it’s just a pity the same can’t be said about the Demons. The market rally was led by positive results in offshore market, but, closer to home, the news was not so great. ANZ figures showed that the number of job advertisements had fallen for the month, while unemployment data showed the unemployment rate has increased to 5.6 per cent – its highest level in more than three years. Looking on the brighter side, there is a good chance this data will lead the Reserve Bank of Australia to decrease interest rates next month.
Mr Richard Sellers the director general of the Department of Mines and Petroleum for the Government of Western Australia, officially opened the mine. The Nullagine goldfield is one of the State’s oldest goldfields with discoveries first made near the Nullagine Township in the late 1890s, sparking a gold rush.
Stock Tip of the Week Telstra Ltd (TLS) – Hold Telstra is the leading telecommunications and information service provider in Australia with a full suite of services across voice, mobile, data and internet products and has either a dominant or significant market share in each service category. In today’s economic environment where ultra-low interest rates are the norm, investors have been flooding to high yielding stocks like TLS, despite currently being fully priced. Telstra currently pays a dividend yield of 6 per cent fully franked, which is more than current bond and term deposit yields. For this reason I can see TLS surpassing current price levels despite Hartleys having a HOLD recommendation and valuation of $4.30.
• Digging for gold at Nullagine
The discoveries raised great expectations around the world when the early explorers thought they may have discovered another Witwatersrand goldfield. The area is also one of the least explored goldfields in Western Australia.
Brenton Reynolds is a representative of Hartleys Limited ABN 33 104 195 057, AFSL No 230052. Information in this column is for general interest only. Always seek professional advice before making any financial decision. Hartleys, as Principal, its directors and/ or employees and their associates may hold securities in companies mentioned in the above column from time to time. Hartleys is a Western Australian based financial services company which specialises in Corporate Finance, Stockbroking, Wealth Management, Institutional Sales and Research services.
• The Nullagine site
For this reason, the real potential of this goldfield is yet to be unlocked and it is fitting that at this time, work is now underway to better understand the geological and economic potential of the conglomerates.
The Nullagine Gold Project was commissioned in September 2012 with the first gold bar poured on September 30, 2012. The capital cost was $89m and the operation was committed to full production in November 2012 at nameplate capacity, with commercial production declared for the first quarter of 2013. The official opening follows record mine production and gold output volumes during the month of March, as well as the Company’s first debt repayment and delivery against its price protection program at a significant premium to the average spot price for gold. Millennium CEO Brian Rear said the opening was a significant day in the life of Millennium Minerals and for the gold sector in Australia. “I am particularly pleased that we have been able to deliver against all of our stated objectives including delivering the project on time and on budget, and that today a profitable gold mining operation is officially launched,” he said.

Sue Bergersen the business and workforce development manager for Karlka NNyiyaparli Aboriginal Corporation assisted NEMMS in the agreement negotiations. “This commercial arrangement is a very real and tangible example of the effort being undertaken by traditional owners in the Pilbara to change their futures,” she said. “This partnership utilises current mining and market opportunities to build financial capacity, independence and employment pathways for family members.”

Mr Vinaceous to launch sexy drop
event
Aker’s Anecdotes By Ben Leahy
Jason Akermanis was not only known for having silky skills and lightning speed on the football field, but also for having one of the fastest mouths off the pitch. And it was this off-field talent for telling a yarn that kept guests laughing at a function hosted by the Karratha Falcons footy club on Saturday April 13. During the hour-long show, former Western Bulldogs and Brisbane Lions star Akermanis told stories about Mad Monday parties, former coach Leigh Mathews and even his mother’s battle with cancer. Karratha Falcons president Clayton McIntosh said Akermanis was his usual entertaining self. “Very controversial but enjoyable and up for the challenge of [dealing with] the Karratha crowd and the questions they asked,” Clayton said.
RSL Members & Most Welcome
BINGO
“I asked him how he had enjoyed his time in Karratha, and he said it is the best night he has ever had in Karratha – that is the sort of attitude he has.” Akermanis also told about a famous sledging match between former AFL opponents and brothers Michael and Brett Voss that ended in Michael’s favour after a mother joke. One of the most popular questions from the crowd was if Akermanis had any secret stories about Beau McDonald, who was his former teammate at the Brisbane Lions and is now coach of the Karratha Falcons. Yet for once Akermanis was diplomatic and chose to stay quiet on the topic. “Yeah, Akermanis probably didn’t want to give anything away because Beau could probably tell stories about him too, I suppose,” Clayton said. With support from the Ibis Styles hotel and the Pilbara Echo, the night attracted 120 ticket-paying guests and raised $3,000 for the Karratha Falcons after they auctioned signed footballs and jumpers and other memorabilia. Clayton said that after the success of the night, the club was keen to hold a similar event in July or August.

Wine tasting is set to get sexy, as the Icon restaurant in Karratha launches its burlesque-themed wine-tasting event next week. The Vinaceous Wine event will feature “tastings with a twist” and a chance to meet the wine-makers against a backdrop of music by DJ Iconic. Mike Borowiec is bringing the Vinaceous Wine range to Karratha and to tie in with the burlesque theme, will feature drinks such as a sparkling called Burlesque and a cider called Forbidden Fruit. Mike, along with Nick “Vinaceous” who is the winemaker, will pour and present wines to the people and behave “vinaceously” for the night. Mike said the burlesque theme complements everything vinaceous. “Vinaceous is very much centred
around 1920s/1930s vaudeville circus, theatre and burlesque,” he said. So who should come to this event? “Everyone that enjoys wine and enjoys a good time,” laughed Mike. “They can come along and try all the Vinacious Wines. “The reds, the whites, the sparklings and the cider and meet Mr Vinacious himself. “There’s a little bit of naughtiness to it, there’s a little bit of frivolity and playfulness to it. “People can learn about the wine, but more importantly if they dress up and have a bit of fun, we’re all going to have a pretty good night!” Tickets cost $55 per person and include tapas and tastings. The event will be held on Wednesday April 24 from 7:30pm.
event By Tamara Binamat About 150 young people from around the Shire of Roebourne hit the Frank Butler Community Centre last Friday night to ‘Kill the Music’.
The disco featured an extremely popular DJ, who pumped out the latest charttoppers for the dancers. The party-goers, aged from 12 to 15-years-old, danced until 11:30pm at the hugely successful Kill the Music disco.

interview
Spirit Sessions By Ben Leahy
Psychic and medium Deborah Webber is in Karratha this Tuesday April 22 and Hedland on April 23 to communicate with the souls of the departed. The medium, who has appeared on television show Sensing Murder and writes a regular column for Woman’s Day magazine, claims she can help people speak to loved ones who have passed away.
‘
Come with an open mind and just see what happens
Deborah said that during her show at the Karratha Country Club she will feel the energy of the spirits talking to her. “I walk around the audience and I give messages to people, I give the proof of life after life,” Deborah said. Deborah said she was born with psychic powers but became more intune with them after going through the trauma of a breakup with a former partner. She has since gone on to perform medium readings for the likes of Bob Irwin, the father of Crocodile Hunter and conservationist Steve Irwin, and had people say that her readings helped them overcome grief at the loss of a loved one. “Sometimes people can have an old issue, like if they have had an unresolved argument with a person who has passed over.” “The spirits will tell me about this issue … and they will talk about what happened and what they feel like. “It is like a release of pressure [for the loved ones still alive].” Yet, at the same time, Deborah said Karratha audiences should come without preconceived expectations. She said that not only can she not perform a reading for everyone in the room but that she never knows where the energy of the spirits will take her. “I don’t want people coming with false hope either because that just hurts people,” Deborah said. “So rather they should come with an open mind and just see what happens.”

Or do you struggle to stay asleep through the entire night, either waking often or waking in the wee hours of the morning and not getting back to sleep. Well, you could be suffering from insomnia. Insomnia does not just mean staying awake 24 hours of the day, it is the inability to obtain an adequate amount or quality of sleep. The difficulty can be in falling asleep, remaining asleep or both. Insomnia can either be classified as transient, meaning it lasts for less than one month and is usually due
to stressors or environmental change. Or it can be chronic insomnia, meaning it lasts for more than one month and can either be due to physical or psychological conditions (injury inhibiting restful sleep or anxiety keeping you awake) or quite often the insomnia arises for no apparent reason.
Here are a few tips to increase your sleep quality so that your body can keep on top of these tasks:
The quality of your night impacts on the quality of your day, and getting a restful sleep is just as crucial to health as diet and exercise.
1. Minimise your consumption of caffeine (coffee, tea, energy drinks), especially after midday. Caffeine causes stress hormones such as cortisol to be released. This is what keeps you alert and awake, but if you are someone who struggles with sleep these hormones could be inhibiting your mind from switching off at night.
While we sleep our body is undergoing detoxification, growth, repair, maintenance, our immune system is getting re-booted and our hormones are balanced.
2. Get some sunshine. 15 minutes a day of sunshine helps to stimulate your pineal gland to release melatonin. This hormone is in charge of your sleep-wake cycle.
3. Eat foods high in GABA. GABA is described as our brains ‘natural chill pill’. It is an inhibitory neurotransmitter helping to calm anxiety and stress, bringing about a restful sleep. Good foods include almonds, tree nuts, bananas, broccoli, brown rice and fish. 4. Avoid eating too late. Allowing 2-3 hours between dinner and sleep is best. This improves your digestion as well as the quality of your sleep. 5. Herbal teas such as chamomile, passionflower and lemon verbena have been shown to promote relaxation and may assist in encouraging restful sleep.

The Shire of Roebourne runs an annual incentive scheme for ratepayers to settle their accounts in full by the due date. Traditionally, the incentive scheme has received strong support from the business community with businesses donating cash prizes and vouchers. In recognition of their support, sponsors are acknowledged in a newsletter sent with the annual rates notice which is distributed to thousands of property owners across Australia. Sponsors are also recognised through coverage in the local media by way of advertising. Interested businesses are invited to participate in this unique sponsorship opportunity. Exmouth Golfers tee off for breast cancer research Next month members of Exmouth Golf Club will ‘Tee Off for Breast Cancer Research’ to support a cause important to every woman. This special event is a fundraising initiative of the Breast Cancer Institute of Australia to support research for the treatment, cure and prevention of breast cancer. This year Exmouth Golf Club, along with an expected 350 golf clubs across Australia, will show their commitment to this important research by holding a Tee Off event. These wonderful events have
raised over $1.3 million for breast cancer clinical trials research since their inception in 1996. Mrs Amanda Francis-Maier, committee member, said the club and its members are proud to be involved in the event. “These events support a cause close to the heart of many of our members,” she said. “It is great to be able to enjoy a round of golf with friends whilst raising funds for such a worthwhile cause. “The club and its members are passionate about supporting research that can save more lives from breast cancer.”
Ms Victoria Tayler, Special Projects Officer of the BCIA, said the commitment and support of Exmouth Golf Club and its members is greatly appreciated. “This year, our researchers are planning to commence new clinical trials which can further improve treatments for women diagnosed with breast cancer and save more lives,” said Ms Tayler. “By holding a Tee Off event, Exmouth Golf Club and its members are making a valuable contribution to our research progress and helping us work towards a future free of breast cancer for generations to come.”

20th annual North West Swimming Champs crosses finish line
• Competitors launch off the starting blocks
The annual North West Swimming Championships is done and dusted for another year, as swimmers from all over the North West competed for top places in Karratha.
The Karratha Swim team sang the National Anthem to commence the event after club captains Cian Lynch and Grace Williamson took the athletes oath.
In it’s 20th year, the champs had hundreds of entrants competing in 90 scheduled events.
The very exciting “50 Free Dash for Cash” event wrapped up the Championships. Once nominated, swimmers are selected and are given a handicapped time based on their swimming time during the meet.
Age categories ranged from Under 8s to 15s and over. There were four adult parents swimmers representing Karratha.
This “equalizes” the event
for all competitors. Jordan Bushby of Karratha won the the 10 and Under category, Micah Rogers from Tom Price won the 11-13-yearold category and Cian Lynch from Karratha won the 14-yearolds and Over category. This year marks the final year the North West Swimming Championships will be held at it’s current location. Next year the competition will be relocated to a heated pool.

Bluewater Tackle
Exmouth Fishing Report By Jenni Gates
The winner of the March fishing comp at Tackle World Exmouth was 8-year-old Corey Thomas. Corey caught his first sailfish while fishing with his mum, dad and brother recently. Corey has won $50 to spend in-store and goes in to the draw to win $1,000 worth of Shimano fishing gear at Christmas. Congratulations to Corey. Corey has joined a long list of junior anglers that live in Exmouth who have tagged their first billfish. In fact, I’d be inclined to think there are more juniors in the Exmouth school who have tagged a billfish than any other school in Australia? Ruby, ruby, ruby... That is word on the lips of boating anglers this week as people get the chance to get amongst the tasty red fish found in deep waters on the calm days with little tidal movement. One such lucky angler is Jodie Anderson. Jodie and her partner Callum are avid anglers and enjoy fishing throughout the year in Exmouth. The couple has lived in Exmouth for many years and is often seen at the
pilbaraecho www.pilbaraecho.com.au

Corey catches more than his breath
tackle store and boat ramps. This capture was a highlight for them and a new species to add to the variety caught in Exmouth. Many people catch Ruby jobfish on electric reels and some people think electric reels are far too easy. However, it does take good boating skills and fishing knowledge to land your bait in the right place, not to mention finesse with hooking up and strength if bringing the fish up using a gimbal belt. It can take a long time to reach the ocean floor in deep water and if you have missed your target area due to current, wind or human error then it’s a long way back to the surface and an even longer time to reposition. The good part is that if you do get a good fish, you really only need one or two because they are so big and tasty! Learmonth Jetty has had great schools of hardy heads congregating around the pylons lately. You can see small bream and the odd mangrove jack from the jetty, while queenfish have been screaming in and snavelling up any opportunity to grab
bait. The black ink on the jetty is a sure sign that squid have been about and it’s always a good idea to have a squid jig in your tackle box incase they show up. One angler’s tip to catch the queenfish is to use small soft plastics cast far away from the jetty and let drop to mid water, then a fast retrieve. Small trevally can come through at times as well, while shovel nose sharks can be seen cruising the shoreline. A fishing session at Learmonth can be very productive and it’s a lovely beach for the family to enjoy as well. The guys from Diversity Charters have been getting great catches of rankin cod and red emperor this last week, while there was a few coral trout on the menu for keen spearfishing crew. The waters have been exceptionally clear and perfect for diving, with great visibility. Quite a few local spearfishermen have been getting in to the deeper waters and selecting red emperor
for the dinner table. Spearfishing is a great way to be fit and see exactly what is in the area you are fishing. We would like to finish this report with a tribute to the late Steve Pitman who passed away this week. Steve has been a resident of Exmouth for many years and member of the Exmouth Game Fishing Club for over 30 years. Steve loved fishing and in particular game fishing using light line classes.
• Catch Of The Week goes to Corey Thomas Last year Steve fished with his daughter Sahra in the international tournament here in Exmouth prior to his cancer being diagnosed. Steve was so proud of his daughter, who won

Largest turnout kicks off mountain bike championship By Damien Muller
• The gruelling terrain did not stop Trevor Phelps from powering to victory in the Expert category Photos by Dean Murray
DRINKING WATER Save money using reverse osmosis to purify your own tap water and cut out the high costs of bottled water delivery!
A new mountain biking season kicked off on Saturday April 13 with 54 riders taking to the course in the biggest turn out ever for a local club race. The Burrup Mountain Bike Club’s Scott Cycles Club Championship competition began at 2pm with a Dirtmasters event catering for riders from the ages of four through to 12-yearsold. The eight riders were broken into two age groups with each group taking turns to hit the Dirtmaster circuit. Riders were also challenged to work on their bike skills, weaving in and out of road cones, while waiting for their turn on the circuit. Dirtmasters was followed by a rather warm Round 1 for the
rest of the riders in the Juniors, Ladies, Sport, Expert and Elite categories. The course with its steep opening hill proved a fitting challenge to all levels of rider. It was also great to see the two Finbar/Scott Cycles Club Bikes being ridden. The next round is on Saturday May 11 – check http://home.spin. net.au/burrupmb/ or Facebook Burrup Mountain Bike Club closer to the date for course details. BMBC currently has two Finbar/Scott Cycles sponsored dual suspension club bikes available for non-members to use to try the sport. If you would like to have a go, contact Gavin Smith gav.sal@ bigpond.net.au for more details. The next round will be held on Saturday the 11th of May.
