Key Karratha CBD project approved By Ben Leahy
• An artist’s impression of The Quarter
A third key project in the multimillion dollar revitalisation of the Karratha town centre is a step closer to taking shape after the $100m The Quarter project gained planning approval late last month. When constructed, The Quarter will include close to 10,000 square metres of office and retail space, apartments for service workers, a public square and a 150-room four-star hotel located on the corner of Sharpe Avenue and Warambie Road. The Quarter joins the $65m Double Tree – by Hilton luxury hotel in gaining recent planning approval and comes as the under-construction Pelago East apartment block now rises eight-storeys above Warambie Road. Progress made towards largest Lazy Lands development in Nickol By Ben Leahy Land in Nickol previously earmarked for community services, such as child or aged care facilities, will now likely be developed into a large residential infill under the Pilbara Cities Office’s Lazy Lands program. Under the plan, the 1.23ha block is to be amalgamated into a much larger tranche of State-owned land that stretches from Tambrey Drive to Balmoral Road, opening the door for a potential large-scale development. The Shire of Roebourne’s council report said it is “essentially ‘gifting’” the community land reserve on Delambre Drive to the State because it had not received enough community interest in the lot. “A childcare use for the site has lost momentum after the nearby Tambrey early learning centre commenced,” the report said. “[And] aged care facilities are now proposed to be located elsewhere in central Karratha.” The Shire’s decision comes as the Lazy Lands program
seeks to boost Karratha’s housing stocks by building new residential blocks on land previously reserved for drainage runoffs. Under this program, a study into drainage patterns affecting the land in Nickol, which is roughly bordered by Delambre and Tambrey Drives and Bathgate and Balmoral Roads, is still underway. However, if cleared for development, it would be the largest tranche yet to be released under the Lazy Lands program. While the decision to transfer ownership of the 1.23ha lot to the State is not open to community consultation, any proposed developments on the site would be. The Shire report also recommended that future developments on the site compensate the Shire for giving up ownership of the land by including plans for community benefits that are “above the expected norm”. These benefits could include increased parklands and public art or a percentage of housing allocated for Shire staff, aged persons and social housing.

FIFO mental health under the spotlight Western Australian FIFO workers are being asked to take part in the biggest study to date of the mental wellbeing of people in the mining, construction and related industries who work split rosters. Designed by suicide prevention agency Lifeline and psychologists from Edith Cowan University, the ground-breaking study involves the completion of a private, online survey. Researchers are hoping to recruit up to 2,000 participants who work fly-in-fly-out, and drivein-drive-out rosters to outline the benefits and challenges of their lifestyle and ways in which they cope with stress. They are also interested in workers’ suggestions for services and programs that could assist them. All answers are anonymous and will not be shared. As well as providing valuable insights into the benefits and challenges of this relatively new and growing lifestyle, the study findings, expected to be released in June, will also be used to develop strategies to support the mental health of the whole FIFO and DIDO community. Lifeline WA CEO Fiona Kalaf said the online survey was
anonymous and took 15 minutes to complete. “The survey will be available online for a short period of time and we encourage FIFO and DIDO workers to be a part of this important project to improve the available supports of this vital workforce,” Ms Kalaf said. “We want to understand what FIFO workers find stressful and what their coping strategies are. “With the lifestyle they lead we know there are great pros but
there can be not-so-great cons.” The study has been funded by Pilbara-based vehicle hire company Raw Hire and supported by the Australian Institute of Management. For further information visit www.lifelinewa.org.au To complete the survey go to www.tinyurl.com/ecufifo. If you or someone you know is thinking about suicide call Lifeline on 13 11 14 at any time of the day or night.

Federal senators inspect Pilbara defences By Ben Leahy
Senators from a committee into foreign affairs and defence flew into the Pilbara last week to review security in the North West. Western Australian senator Alan Eggleston is chairing the committee and told the ABC that with the North West producing $80bn of Australia’s resources annually, many were concerned at the small defence force presence in the region. However, the senate committee tour follows a visit last year by Vice chief of the Defence Force Air Marshal Binskin, the country’s second most senior officer, in which he told the Pilbara Echo it was important not to “overstate” the risk. “We are around the North West day in day out … but it is low visibility,” he said. “What we need to do is just make people more aware of what we do up there. “[Greater visibility] might make it better for people around the rigs or the resource area to have an understanding of what is around them.” The committee’s report is expected to be released on May 16.

Pilbara hay production project highlights innovative water use Rio Tinto’s pastoral releases have produced their first bumper crop of hay since they began receiving excess water from the company’s large scale, below water table mining operations in nearby Marandoo.
2013, and the first quarter’s operations resulted in approximately 3,000 bales - equating to more than 2000 tonnes of hay, with a revised annual estimate of about 25,000 tonnes.
Known as the Hamersley Agricultural Project (HAP), it involves irrigating 835 hectares of land to grow pasture for cattle stations operated by Rio Tinto across the Pilbara.
Rio Tinto general manager for Climate Change, Water and Environment Allan Jackson said the launch had been a great success and remained on track to produce hay to project expectations.
Remaining water is then used to support mine operations, provide water supply to the Tom Price township or is reinjected into the Southern Fortescue Borefield. HAP is the first project of its kind in the Pilbara, relying on 35km of mild steel pipe, 22 pumps and large-scale associated pumping infrastructure. The completed project uses very large centre pivots, each able to irrigate 40 to 50 hectares of pasture land. The majority of pivots are now operational, with 15 of the total 17 pivots currently irrigating around 750ha.
“We have already started supplying our pastoral operations in the Pilbara and are presently refining the process by which we could sell any surplus externally,” he said. “This project will produce hay all year round at a consistent quality, and we expect to cut the crops up to eight times per year,” he said. “Rio Tinto is committed to management across its operations.

“This expertise will prove increasingly important as
more of our sites produce surplus water due to increased mining below water table.” Rio Tinto holds six pastoral stations in the Pilbara and manages five covering 1.5m hectares of land in total. The five managed stations of Karratha, Hamersley, Rocklea, Juna and Yarraloola can jointly run up to approximately 25,000 head of cattle.

One small 7ha pivot is reserved for growing native seeds for future minesite rehabilitation.

Autonomous haul trucks move 100 million tonnes
Electronic Stability Control can help reduce your chances of running off the road – the leading cause of serious injuries on country roads. ESC detects the moment your car begins to skid and starts applying individual brakes to individual wheels to help keep you in control. It’s just one of the lifesaving features you’ll find in vehicles with a 5 Star ANCAP safety rating. So if you’re in the market for a new car, choose one with ESC.

Rio Tinto has reached a significant milestone in the Pilbara region, moving 100m tonnes by autonomous haul truck. The driverless dump trucks are a key component in Rio Tinto’s strategy of employing next-generation technology to increase efficiency and reduce costs. The 100m tonnes includes material from the West Angelas operation, where this new technology was first trialled, Yandicoogina, which currently operates a fleet of 13 AHTs and, more recently, the Nammuldi operations, where six AHTs commenced operation in March and have already moved in excess of two million tonnes. Hope Downs 4 is gearing up to commence autonomous operation in early 2014, with four AHTs already on site. Rio Tinto’s general manager Mine of the Future, James Petty, said the technology had performed well. “Since we commenced trials in December 2008, we have demonstrated improvements in both safety and productivity and in that time we have trained more than 270 employees to operate and work alongside these autonomous haul trucks,” he said. “Our teams managing this equipment recognise the significant opportunity they have to be up-skilled in a mining system which is at the forefront of the global mining industry.” Rio Tinto expects to have more than 40 trucks operating autonomously across three sites in the Pilbara by early 2014.

Young ones off with the circus By Tamara Binamat
• The kids loved the new skills they learned
Young people throughout the Shire of Roebourne were playing with ‘devil sticks’, stilts, unicycles and more as part of a Circus Skills workshop. Brendan Coleman and Beth Sheldon from the WA Circus School demonstrated circus moves such as juggling, spinning plates, tumbling and stilt-walking to eager young people in Roebourne, Wickham and Karratha. About a dozen youth in Karratha and Wickham, and about 30 in Roebourne could possibly now have the skills to be future ringmasters.
The Karratha Arts & Learning Centre committee will run the very popular Mother’s Day market on Saturday May 4, at the Centre located in Richardson Way, Bulgarra. The Centre is fully air-conditioned for everyone’s comfort on what will be a very busy day. The crowd is always terrific so make it your first stop of the day for the best choice of goods on offer. The market will run from 9am until 1pm - no early birds please so stall holders have time to set up. The centre is completely booked out, with the emphasis being on high-quality, locally hand-made and owned crafts and associated goods. It is the perfect opportunity to purchase a beautiful hand-made gift for Mum for Mother’s Day on Sunday May 12. Many of our regulars are back and joining new stall holders, so the variety is excellent.

Rio Tinto general manager for Port operations Nick Serle said the housing developments formed an important part of the strategy towards creating a more residentially based coastal operations workforce. “We are progressing rapidly now towards finalising the 290m tonne per annum phase of expansions,” Mr Serle said. “At the same time [we] are employing the people we need to run our ports, rail and other business units as we increase capacity. “The great thing about the coastal operations is that our infrastructure is permanent and we are committed to investing in our residential workforce by not only building houses, but also contributing back to the community through key partnerships.” The Wickham South sub-division is well underway with on-site services complete in stage 1A and ready for handover to the builders by the end of April. The first two modular builder’s contracts have been awarded to McGrath Homes and BGC with each to build 60 houses. Tenders are being evaluated for the third contract and will be awarded in the coming weeks. Once complete, the Wickham South sub-division will comprise of companyowned houses and provision of a number of land lots for government and other

service providers. Stage 1 will see 212 company houses built from late 2013 and throughout 2014. The two new developments in central Wickham due to commence next month will see the construction of 31 new houses. These will be built on two sites - one at Acacia Place (seven houses) and the other at Saltbush Court (24 houses). Houses will be a combination of three bedroom and four bedroom purpose built houses, based on a design recently built in Jingarri Estate in Karratha. Contracts have been awarded to Pindan and construction is due to commence on May 22, 2013 with completion of these houses expected by Q2, 2014.

pilbarapropertyguide.com.au REIA slams proposed fair work amendment bill The Real Estate Institute of Australia says there is no evidence of the need for change to the current Award for real estate agents and that the Government’s proposal for new legislation will have an adverse effect on clients, consumers and the industry. The Fair Work Amendment Bill 2013, which is currently being considered by the Senate Education, Employment and Workplace Relations Committee, proposes among other things: the need to provide additional remuneration for employees working overtime; unsocial, irregular or unpredictable hours; working on weekends or public holidays; or working shifts. REIA President, Mr Peter Bushby said this legislation has potentially the greatest impact on the viability of real estate businesses and the services they provide. “Agents require flexibility in their hours and appreciate that weekend and evening work is required to meet clients’ needs,” Mr Bushby said. “The current state award recognises these issues and is the product of consent between the unions and employer representatives in the industry. “It’s an award made by the industry for the industry. “The flexibility it provides in relation to hours of work is a reflection of its history as well as the characteristics of the industry.” Source: REIA Brookfield Multiplex’s accommodation village at Roy Hill

Landcare volunteers encourage people to enter the 2013 State and Territory Landcare Awards
Nominations open for 2013 West Australian Landcare Awards Landcarers across the state are being encouraged to submit a nomination for the 2013 West Australian Landcare Awards.
The detailed project design of the NPI facilities - including heavy and light vehicle workshops and a wash down facility, a boilermaker workshop, tyre change facility, lube farm, administration buildings and gatehouse - will commence immediately, with completion slated for December 2014. The start of construction works is dependent upon Roy Hill securing its package of debt finance. The worker accommodation village commenced construction in August last year, with a temporary ‘fly’ camp completed ahead of Christmas. The first tranche of permanent dwellings is now being built, with work also soon to start on purpose-built recreational facilities like tennis courts and a gymnasium. The entire master planned community is expected to be completed by late this year. Brookfield Multiplex WA Regional Managing Director Chris Palandri said securing a second contract at Roy Hill was a great result.
“Brookfield Multiplex was selected for the NPI contract following an open tender process, which shows that we have the ability to remain competitive on smaller projects, as well as larger, master planned developments like the accommodation component of Roy Hill,” he said. “The quality of work we have completed in the accommodation village boosted our credentials for the NPI contract, and we are thrilled to now be working on multiple components of the Roy Hill project.” Mr Palandri said the NPI facilities would be completed in stages, allowing simultaneous work on the accommodation precinct, to ensure both projects are completed to schedule. He said the NPI facilities would need to be delivered with maximum efficiency, to
complement the construction work schedule to be managed by Samsung C&T on the port and railroad - with a view to operations commencing in late 2015. “The NPI facilities are being designed to cater for the large mining fleet of proven technology, and will therefore play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of the mine,” he said. “The contract will be split into three stages including project design, earthworks and civil works, followed by the procurement and fabrication of structures, then on site construction and delivery.” The Roy Hill accommodation precinct will build on Brookfield Multiplex’s growing portfolio of engineering and infrastructure projects in Western Australia - with its workbook now exceeding $400 million.

The renowned Awards, now in their 23rd year, honour the invaluable work that is being undertaken by the Landcare community, with the winners from all State & Territory Awards going forward as finalists to the prestigious National Landcare Awards in 2014. There are nine national categories, covering a range of environmental projects and themes, including sustainable agriculture, coastal rehabilitation and Indigenous land management. Individuals, schools, community groups and networks working to protect or restore local environments, farms, coastlines, native vegetation, bushlands, wetlands, waterways, and more, can be nominated. His Excellency Mr Malcolm McCusker, AC CVO QC, Governor of Western Australia, a strong supporter of Landcare, and its Patron in WA for many years, encourages all Western Australians to become involved in Landcare and to nominate worthy people in their district who are engaged in Landcare activities for a Landcare Award. Mr McCusker said, “The Landcare Awards provide a great opportunity
to promote Landcare and its important objectives, to celebrate and acknowledge committed individuals and groups who are doing such valuable work to preserve and restore the environment, and to hear their inspirational stories”. Merrilyn Jones from Western Australia’s North Dandalup Primary School was delighted to see the school win the Westpac Education Award in the 2012 National Landcare Awards. “Winning the Westpac Education Award was a wonderful acknowledgement of our whole school community, and of the efforts that have ensured our Landcare focus has been maintained over the last 15 years,” she said. “Acknowledgement always leads to many things - renewed interest at a state, school and community level. “The sharing process, when you gather high quality ideas and energies together, is invaluable, and being able to present our model which has longevity and a high degree of effectiveness, gives young people a sense of great hope for their future. “What else could we wish for? That’s what Landcare is about.” To submit a nomination, or to read about the categories, criteria and closing dates, please visit www. landcareonline.com.au.
Brookfield Multiplex’s Engineering and Infrastructure division has been awarded a contract of more than $70 million to develop Non-Processing Infrastructure to service the Roy Hill mine, in addition to its existing $190 million contract to build a 2,000 person camp to accommodate mine workers.

Social media gives large and small businesses a new, direct way to interact with existing and potential customers to promote products and services. But if your business is using social media channels like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, you have a responsibility to ensure content is accurate, irrespective of who put it there. Your customers expect it to be accurate and so does the law. You must ensure any claims you make as part of your marketing and promotional activities are not false, misleading or deceptive. This includes advertisements, testimonials or statements using any media, including print, radio, television, websites and social media channels like Facebook and Twitter. Examples: • A store tweets that it is the first Australian retailer to offer 100% environmentally friendly cleaning products when they have not done any research to support this claim. It turns out another shop has already offered this for many years. This tweet is likely to be false, misleading or deceptive.

• A retailer pays a celebrity to tweet that she loves the layout and range in one of their new stores but this celebrity has never been to the store. This tweet is likely to be false, misleading or deceptive. There are no new consumer laws or rules in place for social media. Consumer protection laws which prohibit businesses from making false, misleading or deceptive claims about their products or services have been in place for decades. These laws apply to social media in the same way they apply to any other marketing or sales channel. You can also be held responsible for posts or public comments made by others on your social media pages that are false or likely to mislead or deceive consumers. The Federal Court confirmed this in 2011 during Australian Competition and Consumer Commission court action against an allergy treatment company. The court concluded that the company accepted responsibility for fan posts and testimonials on its social
media pages when it knew about them and decided not to remove them. Examples: • A fan of XYZ Pty Ltd posts negative and untrue comments about a competitor’s product on XYZ’s Facebook page. XYZ knows that the comments are incorrect, but decides to leave the comments up on its page. XYZ may be held accountable for these comments even though they were made by someone else. • ABC Pty Ltd and DEF Pty Ltd are market leaders in the paint industry. A customer posts on ABC’s Facebook page that their paint always lasts much longer than DEF’s paint. ABC is unsure if this is true, but decides not to remove the post. It turns out that ABC’s paint does not, in fact, last longer. ABC may be held responsible for this comment. Don’t make statements on your Facebook or other social media pages that you wouldn’t make in any other type of advertising. If you’re unsure about what you can or can’t say, seek legal advice.

Strategies for communities and professionals Ever have clients who: • Have TV, stereo and video games but no money for rent, food and “basics”? • Don’t turn up for appointments and don’t know what they want? • Often treat you and your agency with disrespect, suspicion, and/or disdain? • Don’t seem to care about work, next week, or their long term future? • Appear to engage in decision making that just doesn’t make any sense? This introductory workshop will give you some insights and tools to turn all this around and take a lot of the stress out of managing your case-load and optimizing outcomes for the people with whom you work.

By Brenton Reynolds A seesawing April continued with the ASX200 finishing down 82 points (1.6 per cent) for the week ending April 19. In better news for the local economy, the Australian Dollar fell around 1.8 per cent against the greenback, one of the larger falls we have had in a long while. There appears to be a fundamental shift of money out of the resources sector into high yielding securities – I’m sure many of you on the front line in the Pilbara will be feeling the pinch from this. By far the largest news of the last fortnight however, has been the incredible drop in the price of gold. The sell off from a high of $1,590 USD per ounce on April 9 to a low of $1,321 USD per ounce on April 16 was the largest fall in the price of gold in more than three decades. Gold has now stabilised at around $1,400 USD per ounce.
Stock Tip of the Week Woodside Petroleum (WPL) – BUY As Australia´s premier oil and gas play, WPL´s operations encompass LNG, natural gas, condensate, crude oil and LPG. Forays into the US and the Middle East add a minor international complexion. LNG interests in the North West Shelf Joint Venture offshore Western Australia are the mainstay. Woodside recently announced a special dividend of 52 cents per share and a change in their dividend policy. Woodside will now payout 80 per cent of earnings back to shareholders. Finally, one of the big resources companies has given investors what they want, yield. The effect on the share price was violent, Woodside rallied around 10 per cent in a single day and you can bet BHP and RIO took note. Hartleys currently has a BUY rating on WPL with a valuation of $70.

She’s the DJ hailed for putting the magic where it’s meant to be- in the music!
We’d like to have your Mum for lunch....
UK born and Australian bred DJ Helena has secured herself as one of Australia’s leading and most prominent female DJs and electronic producers, with electro, progressive and house beats. DJ Helena will be shaking up Hedland this weekend, as she performs tonight, Saturday April 27 at the Pier Hotel with support from DJ Damain John. Helena describes her music as big room house - upfront with good energy, dirty drops, epic tops and hot vocals. Although she is now an international touring DJ, Helena said she started from the bottom. “I played back room shows, learnt my trade and then worked my way up to playing gigs such as main stage Ultra Festival in America,” she said. “It’s been quite a journey and a lot of hard work and dedication.” In a hard industry, especially for females, Helena said her motivation is the drive to be the best she can be. “I’ve always said my aim is to be playing every major festival in the world alongside the biggest names on the planet,” she said. “Crowds, ambition and my love of the art keeps me more than motivated. “Bring a female in such a male dominated industry - yes it is hard in many respects, but it just pushes you that bit harder to prove yourself to any doubters.” Helena’s first single, Girl from The Sky hit the number one spot on the Australian dance music charts for three weeks. Helena, who once wanted to be a vet, said Port Hedland can expect one major party when she comes to town. “My aim is to get the whole pub jumping and having the best night possible,” she said. “If I don’t achieve this, I have failed in what I came to do.”

Interview By Tamara Binamat
for party of the season
By Anita Smith Medium Deborah Webber, known from her columns in Woman’s Day magazine and TV series Sensing Murder, connected with loved ones in a crowded Karratha Country Club last Monday night. The room was packed. There was an anxious, but exciting energy in the audience. After Deb made her entrance it became clear why this lady is so popular. It is very hard not to like her. Deb has a very animated way of telling stories; she is bubbly and outgoing, has a load of energy, is kind-hearted and is very generous with her time for her audience. Whether or not you are a believer in her spiritual abilities; she sure is a great entertainer and had her audience captivated all night. When Deb roams the room for the next spirit to come through you can hear people holding their breath. And it seemed that spirits were keen to get their stories heard, as an array of people, or I should say souls, came through with spontaneous messages for their loved ones in the audience. Some messages were very personal, some emotional and sad. There was the funny grandmother that had everyone laughing. When Deb came to a halt with the lady right behind me, I couldn’t help but being intrigued. The spirit that talked to Deb didn’t seem to resonate with the lady behind me. But Deb stuck with her story and kept describing the person in fine detail.
When she finally mentioned the name of the spirit (and it was a full name, no guess work) it became clear that it was the father of the woman next to this lady. What she revealed after this was hilarious, as the soul of her dad wanted to know why she sleeps “upside down” (the wrong way around in her bed). As much as I wanted to be a skeptic and wanted to walk out of the show with an “I knew it wasn’t for realattitude”, there was just something about Deb that I can’t put my finger on. Is she just very good at guessing and reading someone’s body language or does she really know things that spirits tell her? The amount of descriptions and details she gives, have a high success rate. You can’t help but wondering if there is life after death and if there is a select few amongst us that are able to pass on messages from the afterlife. Deb’s talent doesn’t stop with talking to spirits. She is also able to read your energy; she is educational and has healing ‘powers’. People were lining up after the show to be released of long lasting pain and ailments. All in all a great night out and for some a great way of catching up with loved ones and friends, the ones that were there in body, spirit and soul. If you get the chance to catch Deb Webber on her tour through WA, go and see her with an open mind and make up your own mind.
“Weekends for us, and hopefully most people, are to just forget about work and do your own thing. “It’s about forgetting all the serious stuff and just having a party.” The boys have warned that’s exactly what Karratha can expect when they hit the Tambrey Tavern this Friday May 3. “We’re going to come up and get pretty loose up there; it’s going to be good,” said Sketch. Performing live, Bombs Away are also bringing DJ Dixie on the road to Karratha and said when the team are all together, “It’s pretty full on”. Not only will Bombs Away be performing their most popular singles in Karratha, in this show they will be revealing three songs that won’t be released until the album comes out at the end of this year. Bombs Away are encouraging everyone who loves a good party to get on board this event.“Come down to the party and let’s get loose!”
We’re going to come up and get pretty loose up there
The proof is in the message?

• Deborah Webber offered comfort and advice for many of the Karratha audience members
The biggest party boys of the season are set to tear up the Pilbara the same week their new track Drunk Arcade is released. Hot on the heels of platinum selling tracks, Party Bass and Supersoaker, Bombs Away’s new hit Drunk Arcade is for those who grew up playing games in front of the TV with your mum telling you it would make your eyes square! Bombs Away have surpassed platinum sales and over 3 million views worldwide for their 2011/2012 Summer hit Supersoaker, gold sales for one of their first smashes, Big Booty Bitches and their last track Party Bass hit platinum sales. Drunk Arcade was released yesterday on iTunes, which Bombs Away described as “a really crazy party song”. “It’s taking a new look at going out and partying, for people who grew up playing electronic games,” Bombs Away told the Pilbara Echo. “The song is basically for kids like us who spend their lives on Playstation and in front of computers.” Bombs Away are in the studio between gigs working on new tracks with the UK’s Luciana, Lil Wayne and others, due for release later this year. The music of Bombs Away is all about having a good time and the duo said their style is a new mix of all dance genres. “People ask, ‘Is it electro, dubstep or drum and bass?’ But it’s basically all types of music,” said Sketch. “If it’s got a good bassline and it’s really fun, we’ll play it. “We actually started describing [the music] as party bass and then we wrote the songs from there. “So, party bass is the answer.” Bombs Away told the Pilbara Echo the quick journey to stardom has been “crazy”. “Our music is about having fun,” they said.

By Tamara Binamat 42 decibel is Matt Bamkin, Cody Robson and Mick Stephens. With Matt on guitar and bass drum, Cody on mandolin, bass and percussion and Mick Stephens on keys with a tambourine on his foot, the trio play nine instruments between them. It’s unusual to see a bass player playing the bass drum as well, but you’ll find Cody with a drum stick tied to a weightlifting glove so he can play both at the same time. For even more versatility, Matt, Cody and Mick all share vocals. The guys play modern rock such as the Black Keys and Mumford and Sons all the way back to The Doors and Rolling Stones. You’ll even hear covers of artists from Gotye to ACDC. “Anything with a guitar in it that’s been a hit over the past 30 or 40 years,” said Matt. “We’ve got some heavy guitars as well as having acoustic/ country/folky songs as well. “It all depends on what the crowd are yelling for.” Based in Broome, 42 Decibel released an EP last July, so they have a handful of originals to mix into the set as well. The band toured through the Pilbara last year and said the shows in Karratha and Hedland were huge successes. “To be able to take our original music and our show to a different community and see the reaction down there is awesome fun,” Matt said.

Motivation can be hard to come by at the best of times, but I find your best motivator is to continue to dream. In dreaming what you want for yourself, you find new ways to tackle your problems, new solutions come to hand and new ideas create a different perspective. Instead of telling yourself what you can’t get done today to reach your dreams, it’s time to tell yourself what you can do. Do something each day, even if it’s something small that helps you move forward. If you are wanting to workout more, do some research with gyms and fitness programs in the area. If you want a new hobby, get online and find out how. If you need totally new inspiration then head to the bookstore, grab something new and get excited about reading it. All of these are good, simple ways to make you feel good that you are doing something for yourself. Then, from what you have done that
day, create a step for tomorrow. If you saw something you liked online, then order it tomorrow. If you want to know more about the gym, then ring tomorrow. Take little steps but keep moving forward.
If it’s exercise you need to get into, then take small steps there too. Tell yourself that you are definitely heading out for a 30-minute walk today and get out there. It doesn’t all have to be cardio classes and big weights at the gym; start small but think big. As long as you are moving forward and progressing, you are getting somewhere. It’s when you tell yourself that you can’t do something that the selfperpetuating depression of never being able to do something will keep nagging at you. Make a little difference today for a big change tomorrow. Have a healthy week!
A year from now you will wish you had started today

Pear and Almond Cake I’ve done more experimenting in my kitchen this week with my new love of coconut flour. Make this cake, cut it up into pieces, freeze it and then just microwave for 60 seconds to enjoy it warm when you want it. I have shown you two ways to serve it here, one for dessert drizzled with nutino and fresh pecans and the other for breakfast with vanilla bean Greek yoghurt, fresh bananas and wild blueberry jam. You only need a small piece of this cake for it to fill you up, so you can be a little indulgent with your toppings and really enjoy being good to yourself. Ingredients 1/2 cup coconut flour 1/4 tsp salt 1 tsp baking powder 4 eggs 1/4 cup coconut oil 1/2 cup honey
1 tsp vanilla bean paste 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp nutmeg 1/2 cup of milk 250g of chopped fresh pears 40g of chopped almonds
Mix dry ingredients together in a bowl. Mix all wet ingredients together in another bowl, except the coconut oil. Add the wet ingredients to the dry. Add the coconut oil. Stir until thoroughly mixed. Pour into cake tin or baking pan and bake at 180 degrees for 30 -35 minutes. After 15 minutes, cover with foil and continue to cook, checking it after 30 minutes. Allow to rest on your bench still covered in foil for about 10 minutes. Cake is cooked when skewer can be removed cleanly. Store extra cake in a container in your fridge or freezer.

Newman’s Braveheart to pack a punch for charity By Ben Leahy The property market versus the stock market – it is a matchup that normally excites investors rather than boxing fans. Yet when Newman real estate professional Kurt “Braveheart” Wallace steps into the boxing ring in Perth on May 5, the time for arguing his case with a well-balanced accounts column will have long passed. Instead, it will be time for his fists to do the talking as he takes on good friend and stockbroker Mark “The Terrace Terror” Lindsay as part of the 2013 Royal Queensberry Corporate Challenge. Held annually, the popular boxing tournament sees business executives, doctors and even Miss Universe contestants putting down their stethoscopes and tiaras in favour of gloves to raise money for children’s charity Toybox. For Kurt, it is also chance to escape the humdrum of office life. “The main reason to get involved is the fitness and the camaraderie,” he said.
“Going into a professional and sedentary lifestyle, I’ve let myself slide.” More than 50 of Kurt’s friends will now fly in from as far away as Melbourne to sip champagne, don evening wear and cheer him on at the black tie event. Event organiser Sophia Barbagallo said Kurt was typical of the support the RQCC attracted with the event last year raising more than $190,000 for Western Australian children in need. She said people stepped into the ring to do a good turn for charity and because the adrenaline rush took them outside their comfort zones. But more importantly still, it offers a chance to unleash one’s inner showman. “[For competitors] it is more about their entrances into the ring even than it is about their fight,” Sophia said. It means competitors often put as much effort into styling a grand entrance with dancers, entourage, music and video as they did practising on the bags. Kurt is confident on that front. While refusing to confirm or deny whether he will be wearing a kilt, he said Braveheart fans will be thrilled by his entrance.
Kurt has also enjoyed the training so much that he is hoping to participate in Newman’s charity boxing event later in the year. But first he expects a close, tactical bout against stockbroker Mark. Kurt said that having recently started his business, Scope Investments, he has had more free time to work in the gym to gain a weight and fitness advantage, while the taller Mark has good technique and a longer reach. “I’m also ex-defence force, so I was lucky enough to have a little bit of what I call the killer instinct,” Kurt added. He’ll need that instinct with the pride of real estate professionals everywhere resting on his shoulders. Yet should victory elude him, Kurt knows he can always fall back on that which boxers know best and “call for a rematch and make a comeback”.

Clontarf kids tour Cape Lambert

Students from the Roebourne and Karratha Contarf Football Academies joined with Rio Tinto staff at a super clinic in Wickham earlier this month to practice their footy skills and learn about the importance of education. Scott Eddy the manager of the Rio Tinto Cape Lambert Rail Operations was on hand to man the breakfast barbecue and present Aussie Rules footballs to the students from each academy that trained the best. “It was great to see their passion for football and commitment to the training,” Mr Eddy said. “The session also gave me an opportunity to discuss the importance of education, doing your best at school and the benefits
employment can offer.” After the super clinic, the students also went on a tour of the Cape Lambert port operations and had lunch with Aboriginal mentors to discuss career opportunities. The super clinic comes on top of Rio Tinto Indigenous programs, such as its support for The Graham Polly Farmer Foundation that seeks to encourage Aboriginal students to complete their high schooling and go on to further education and training. The mining giant also supports the David Wirrpanda Foundation - Wickham Wirra Club Homework Centre that assists 30 primary school children with their homework three afternoons a week.

Locals who are dilly-dallying in getting their teams together for the inaugural Red Dog Festival Relay to be held on June 1 and 2 need to act fast – team registrations close this Tuesday April 30. Competitors like Karratha resident and mountain bike specialist Mark Smith are already scouring the event’s recently

released itinerary as they plan where they might make up valuable time during the two-day, eight leg relay. The course will take competitors in a loop from Dampier to the Millstream Chichester National Park and back, with Mark’s team of four already training hard for the run, bus, road bike, mountain bike, cross country walk, 4WD, swim and paddle legs. And, while his team is among the early favourites to get their hands on the inaugural Red Dog trophy, Mark refused to be drawn into making a prediction. “We are just looking forward to it and training hard and will see what [result] the race brings,” he said. Red Dog Festival organisers also unveiled their first interstate entry last week – an all female team from Canberra called the Raucous Caucous.

LEG TWO:
Bus Ride
LEG FIVE:
TIME:
10am
DISTANCE:
11.5km
TIME:
TRAVELLERS:
1
This leg is a bit of fun with a touch of Pilbara history thrown in. Once all the runners are in, the clocks are stopped and at least one team member climbs aboard the Red Dog bus – the very same one used in Red Dog the movie. This is a chance to sit back and reflect on the wandering spirit of our hero, Red Dog, who wasn’t shy of hitching rides around the Pilbara. After a quick 11.5km long ride, it’ll drop your team member off at Pilbara Resource Centre on the Karratha Tom Price Road, where the Road Bike leg begins.
LEG THREE:
Road Bike
TIME:
10.30am
DISTANCE:
90km
RIDERS:
3
After the Red Dog bus drops its passengers at the Pilbara Resource Centre, three team members will each ride approximately 30km along the Karratha Tom Price Road. The first stretch is relatively flat, while the second rider faces some steady hill action before the third has another flat run to the end of the bitumen. Not long until day one is finished!
LEG FOUR:
Mountain Bike
TIME:
2.30pm
DISTANCE:
32km
RIDERS:

Cross Country DISTANCE: 10km
7.30am
WALKERS: 2
Begin day two gently, sharing a 10km cross-country walk between two team members. Leave historic Millstream Homestead and head into open spinifex country, dotted with bloodwood trees and conkerberries, on the way to the cliff top overlooking Crossing Pool, which is a popular nesting spot for endangered Pilbara Olive Pythons. Walk on to Deep Reach Pool in readiness for the swim.
LEG SIX:
Swim
TIME:
DISTANCE: 2km
10am
SWIMMERS: 2
Each swimmer swims 1km between the steps at each end of Deep Reach Pool – a spring-fed pool about 12 metres deep. Wetsuits are allowed, although freestylers shouldn’t find the water too cold. Onlookers can take in the action from the shade of the large river gums.
LEG SEVEN:
4WD
TIME:
11am
DISTANCE:
166km
MEMBERS:
Minimum 3
After the swim, head out via Python Pool, along the Roeburne Wittenoom Road and up the North West coastal Highway towards Dampier. Nothing too tricky here – about 60km of the 166km leg is sealed. Drivers need to come in within a predetermined time period (speeders arriving too early will be disqualified). The way to make up time on the other competitors is to get the quiz questions right at the two transition points where there will also be a change of drivers. Finish is at Hampton Harbour Oval in Dampier.
LEG EIGHT:
Paddle
TIME:
1.30pm
DISTANCE:
4km
PADDLERS:
4
A double ski is provided for each team, and, two at a time, team members paddle their way out from Hampton Oval Beach, around Channel Island, and back again, changing over at Windy Ridge Oval. At the finish, the whole team will run along the sand together at Hampton Oval Beach, punching the air as they celebrate the end of the relay and the beginning of the finale party!

Two team members ride about 16 km each for this leg as they enter the Millstream-Chichester National Park. Starting on the gravel section of the Karratha Tom Price Road, the leg turns onto a rutted management track atop the Chichester Range with views of the Hammersley Range. Passing river gums and coolabahs, the riders head into the Roeburne Wittenoom Road transition point, where the second rider takes a winding uphill track that rewards them for their effots with views of the Fortescue River. It’s a scenic ride that finishes at Millstream Homestead where relay participants enjoy an evening of camaraderie and camping.
Team member and public servant Yaeli Leibowitz said her group of beginner triathletes booked their flights the day after they heard about the festival. “I can’t think of a better way to see that amazing bit of country than to do this relay,” Yaeli said. “I’ve never been to WA but always wanted to visit … [and] it’ll be a welcome break from the Canberra winter.” For Mark and his team, taking part in the race is not just about getting out into the countryside, but also about supporting a promoter willing to come to the Pilbara. “We just think that we’ve got to take part in the relay because these sorts of events don’t come our way too often do they?” he said. The Red Dog Festival Relay itinerary can be read below.

Frozen ambition By Ben Leahy
You might think you’ve more chance finding a sealed bottle in Charlie Sheen’s liquor cabinet than a dogsled musher in the Pilbara – but then you haven’t met Christian Turner yet.
Even though the closest snowflake is thousands of miles away, 24-year old part time Pilbara resident Christian Turner is planning to next year become just the second Australian to enter the world’s toughest dog sled race – Alaska’s Iditarod. Often described as “The last great race”, Iditarod competitors run an 18dog dogsled team across 1,600km of snow-covered Alaskan wilderness. Christian calls the event the “epitome of adventure”. “There is no road connection at all there … you go through amazing different settings from Native American villages, through the forest and over the Alaskan ranges where Mt Mckinley is, and that is the biggest mountain in North America,” he said. “Then you go onto the tundra and eventually you are actually on the open Bering Sea, which is frozen ocean.” If Christian makes it to the Iditarod’s start line, he will be the youngest Australian to enter the historic race after the only other Aussie competitor took part 28-years ago. Run for the past 40-years, the race is a way of preserving the culture of dog sledding, which was once the only means of transport during the Alaskan winters.
Free Weekly 27 - 28 April 2013 Having now become a high profile event, race winners are revered, while100,000 spectators, each year, line the streets of Anchorage to see the competitors set off on their epic journey. Usually won within nine days, dog mushers run their teams of dogs in a pattern ranging from four-to-eight hours on, followed by a four-hour rest. Yet. in reality, mushers get very little rest or sleep as they spend each rest period feeding and tending to their dogs. The gruelling nature of the race along with the high risk of frostbite and exposure means more competitors drop out of the event than finish it. For Christian, a love of the sport was born after he found work in a dog kennel, having initially gone to Canada to snowboard sixyears ago. At first he helped guide tourists on dog sled adventures and won a few short races, before his lucky break came when star musher Dallas Seavey offered him a job. The Seavey’s are regarded as dogsledding royalty, with Dallas winning the Iditarod in 2012, his father Mitch claiming the 2013 event last month and his grandfather being among the event’s
first entrants. Having spent the past six months helping Dallas train his dogs for the 2013 Iditarod, Christian is briefly back in the Pilbara earning money before rejoining Dallas in November. With the key to winning the Iditarod being the amount of conditioning mushers can get into their dogs before the event, Christian will then spend five months helping Dallas run and care for his dogs. In return, Christian gets to compete in the 2014 Iditarod running Dallas’ second best team of dogs. But Christian’s historic adventure comes at an expected cost of around $10,000, so he is hoping to attract more sponsors like his employer Monadelphous, which donated $1,000 of equipment. But regardless of the costs, Christian said he is to be sure to be back in Alaska running his dogsled under the Northern Lights as he strives to complete “the hardest race on earth”. “[The] villages of Native Americans [that] make up the check points, the smiling faces of [the] children [as] the dogs come powering through, [add up to] make this journey inspiring and more than a dream.”
• Ice boogers will be the least of Christian’s concerns as he attempts to guide his dog team through 1,600km of Alaskan wilderness
