Police are reminding members of the public that it is an offence to be in possession of, and set off fireworks as well as using marine flares in a non-emergency situation. Police are concerned that by setting off marine distress flares when a vessel is not in distress, emergency personnel are tied up with unnecessary searches, which could endanger not only responders but also someone who is the victim of a genuine incident. In February, a 23-year-old Perth man was fined $5,000 in the Lancelin Magistrate’s Court after he set off fireworks. Although the majority of these incidents occur during the summer months, police would like to remind the community that no matter what time of the year it is, they will target these offences.

Closure of community icon paves way for town redevelopment By Tamara Binamat It’s the end of an era and the beginning of a new one for lifestyle and leisure options in Karratha. Tomorrow, Sunday May 5, the Karratha Aquatic Centre is set to close eight weeks before a new public pool at the soon-to-becompleted Karratha Leisureplex opens around the end of June. To celebrate, the Karratha Aquatic Centre, located on Sharpe Avenue in the CBD, will hold a community closing-down party from 1-4pm. The current pool has been open since the 1970s but will now be handed over from the Shire of Roebourne to LandCorp as part of the town centre redevelopment. Demolition will begin next month after infrastructure is removed and the pool emptied with construction of the $100m The Quarter project expected to begin on the site in 2014. The Quarter will include retail and office space and a 150-room hotel. Despite weather setbacks, Andrew Ward, the director of community services at the Shire of Roebourne, said construction of the Karratha Leisureplex is on track to open late June or early July. “Construction from the main building is basically finished, and now we’re just moving towards the basic fit out,” he said. Even though the new pools have been constructed, Karratha will be without a public swimming pool for eight weeks as the Leisureplex’s fit-out is completed. “We tried to minimise the gap as much as possible .. the timelines didn’t align,” Mr Ward said. “We’ve done the research and when the pool is closed for six or seven weeks it’s probably our quietest period of the year,” Mr Ward said. “While we acknowledge that the Karratha town will not have a public pool for [those] weeks, that would normally be its lowest usage time so we tried to minimise the impact on the community.” In the meantime, community members in Karratha and Dampier have access to the Roebourne and Wickham public swimming pools. The new Karratha Leisureplex will feature an eight-lane 50m pool with a moveable boom, meaning the pool can be split into two 25m pools if required. There’s also a splash pad for children, a separate leisure pool for young kids and families as well as a four-lane 25m lap pool that is heated.

Win passes to the circus By Ben Leahy Is life getting a bit too serious? Well this month you could be clowning around with acrobats, high wire motorbikes and even llamas as Australia’s Circus Royale and the Pilbara Echo give away more than 100 double passes to the big top. Performing at the Country Club in Bulgarra from May 18 to 21, Karratha readers can win one of 15 double passes, while Hedland readers can snap up 100 double passes to the show at McGregor Street from May 24 to June 3. To win, readers need to visit www.pilbaraecho.com.au. Circus Royale ringmaster and owner Damian Syred said that with acts by artists from nine different countries, families can expect an entirely new show compared to the group’s last visit two years ago. “We have brand new artists, like the motorbike highwire,” Damian said. “That is where the motorbike goes up on the high wire, and he’s got two girls suspended on a trapeze beneath him – that is something even I had never seen before.” Families can also expect to see the UK’s acrobatic roller skating duo, the Miller Brothers,

• Goldie the clown

Goldie the clown and animal acts involving dogs, ponies, camels and llamas. Llamas – what do they do? “The llamas are part of my brother’s camel act,” Damian said. “They run under and jump over camels that are standing and sitting.” Like the llamas, life on the road can occasionally get bumpy for the rest of the Circus Royale performers too after their big top got flooded by a flash thunderstorm during their last visit to Karratha. And, of course, in show business the show must go on. “It happened overnight, but we still managed to put on the show the next night thanks to all our team and a few locals pitching in to help get us through,” he said. Despite the drama, for Damian the joys of circus life far outweigh the trials. Having first worked with Circus Royale for work experience making show bags he eventually bought the whole show in 2007. He hopes this infectious love for the circus rubs off on those who come to watch. “It is traditional fun for the whole family, we aim to please all the age groups,” he said.

Festival-goers promised a whale of a time By Ben Leahy The popular Ningaloo Whaleshark Festival in Exmouth to be held over the weekend May 24 to 26 is fast approaching with its float parade, art and music performances and even circus show. Live drum and bass act Pimps of Sound, featuring Milly James, will kick off the festival, playing a mix of hip hop and jazz at the opening cocktail party at the Novotel Ningaloo Resort on May 24. International acts Patrick ‘Patty’ Heilmann and Chloe

de Buyl Pisco will also perform at Novotel Ningaloo earlier in the night. The following night on Saturday May 25 the action moves to Grace’s Tavern where Australian blues and roots band Blue Shaddy are back by popular demand, having had local groovers dancing all night on their last visit. WA act Dave Mann plays roots and rock in support. Talanjee Oval will also this year host many of the main community events of the festival with Dave Cannon and Johnny McIntyre playing rock, country and folk tracks.

Other all age attractions include a fun run, float parade, seafood displays, circus acrobatics and fire show, art exhibitions and kid’s beach games. Marine conservationist Brad Norman will give a presentation on whale sharks, with famous giant Gulliver also on display. Other visiting scientists and research groups will be on hand to display their findings. Festival packages, including whale shark swims, accommodation and tickets to festival events, are available at the Exmouth Visitor Centre 9949 1176.

New bus service means alternate travel around Pilbara coast

By Tamara Binamat

After an outcry from Western Australia’s travelling community when Greyhound Australia cancelled their bus service between Perth and Broome, a new service has been introduced to meet the demand. In March, Greyhound Australia axed the south of Broome pickup points, including Karratha and Port Hedland, because they were not “commercially viable”. At the time, general manager of sales Kevin Lyons said for the past decade, Greyhound had tried to make the route commercially viable including reducing frequency from seven to three days per week.

“New competition on the Perth to Geraldton, Exmouth and Port Hedland routes has meant a further decline in already poor patronage, which, combined with high fuel and operational costs, has forced Greyhound to withdraw its services,” Mr Lyons said. Now, Integrity Coach Lines has announced they will be introducing an extended coach service to Northern Coastal towns in WA, including Karratha and Broome. This return service will run along the Coastal Highway twice a week via Geraldton, Carnarvon, Exmouth, Karratha and Port Hedland. “Residents and tourists have been crying out to us for transport options in these areas, so we are

delighted to finally be able to provide this service,” said Ross Sims, owner of Integrity Coach Lines. Kaye Oddie, a WA visitor from Melbourne, said although flights to these areas are available, it is not always an option. “With the abandonment by Greyhound of their connecting bus service, there was no public transport for people such as myself wishing to travel between Karratha and Port Hedland, except for the once weekly air service or one way car rentals which were not [economically] feasible for most tourists,” she said. “It is great to know that Integrity has stepped up to provide this service as it is needed if WA Pilbara and Kimberley tourism is to be seriously encouraged and

supported.” The Karratha Visitor Centre will become a booking agent for the coach line, which will no longer stop on Welcome road but instead will stop at the Visitor Centre. “We are ecstatic their

THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE THE BEST CONVEYOR BELTS

service will now include a Karratha stop,” said manager of the Karratha Visitor Centre, Bazz Harris. “Tourism is hard enough to promote in the Pilbara for some of our visitors and locals alike. “Not to have the service

running could mean the difference in visitors coming west! “This not only impacts tourism here in the Shire of Roebourne but has a ripple effect right across the state.”

The Pilbara might be well known for its mining and rugged natural beauty, but few would automatically associate it with good food. And, while Liliana might now be known for baking the best birthday cakes in town, she hasn’t always spent a lot of time in the kitchen. Despite coming from a close Italian family where food was always at the centre of life, Liliana originally let her mum do the cooking.

“I didn’t grow up at my mum’s side, learning how to make traditional Italian cuisine,” Liliana said. “I was a dancer, and the kitchen belonged to my mum.” “The most I remember doing was running out to the garden to pick a bunch of oregano or basil to add to the pot. “But I could tell by the smells if tonight’s sauce was going to be a good one or not.” Now Liliana can not only smell but make a great sauce and hopes that Masterchef helps her realise her dream of running a family seaside café • Port Hedland mum Liliana Battle on Masterchef in Port Hedland.

And p’raps it was a silly me, to show I’d guts and gizzards when trialled in heat I braved the snow and skied into a blizzard. And so I married Indiana Jones right down the track, the long and winding, uphill climbing

I wonder of the Lemon Heads their song, sung often climbing as out we pull and head for bush my poolside vino pining. And off to distant hot place Built of dust green spinifex and ancient rocks and bindied socks and…yes…impending treks. And even as he prods and pokes me into every stream with wetsuit on and climbing gear I realise it’s my dream. Lending a hand to sick kids and their families By Ben Leahy

• An artists impression of the new Ronald McDonald House

Ever since their young son Oscar was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2007, the Cullen family from Wickham have been living a life that every Pilbara family fears. Not only was their son seriously ill, but he was forced to seek medical treatment thousands of kilometres away at Perth’s Princess Margaret Hospital. Facing an extended stay in Perth, the Cullen’s were directed to Ronald McDonald house, which provides accommodation for families from regional Australia while their child is treated at the children’s hospital. “It meant the world to us to know that we had Ronald McDonald House as a place to stay for as long as we needed it,” Peta Cullen said. “[But] we quickly realised that it wasn’t just a bed to sleep in that would become valuable to us.” “It was the love, support, understanding and friendships that we felt and experienced from RMH staff and other families.” Now it is the turn of Ronald McDonald House to appeal for help from Pilbara residents. With the State Government currently building a new children’s hospital in the Perth suburb of Nedlands, Ronald McDonald house is also relocating to ensure regional families continue to stay close to their child in hospital. Having raised 76 per cent of the funding for the $29 million project, RMH is this month holding functions in Karratha and Hedland to raise more cash and chat about their plans.

RMH executive officer Alison Salmond said it is the first time in the organisation’s 23-year history that it has gone on a roadshow to raise funds. But with 39 Pilbara families staying at RMH in 2012 for a total of 224 nights, she said it was an important time to explain the work RMH does and its plans for the future. Ms Salmond said she will take guests at the Pilbara functions through plans for the new house, which is projected to help 1,000 families each year, effectively tripling the capacity of the current facility. She will also show a DVD about RMH families. “The DVD is all about the families telling their stories as to why they need to stay in the house and why it is so vital for them,” Ms Salmond said. And with some families staying in the house for more than one year, Ms Salmond said one of the biggest boosts they get is from meeting

other people going through similar trials. “Families actually develop really good friendships with each other during their stay at Ronald McDonald House – and it becomes this network where they follow each other’s journeys,” Ms Salmond said. For the Cullens from Wickham that kind of support was invaluable. “Ronald McDonald House allowed our family to stay together at the most difficult time of our lives,” Peta said.

Ronald McDonald House will be hosting a lunch at the Karratha International Hotel from 12 to 2pm on May 15, and a sundowner event at the Esplanade Hotel in Port Hedland May 16 from 4 – 6pm. For more information phone 9387 8175 or visit http://www.rmhc. org.au/building-new-house.

If there is one place on the planet where the landscape, the fishing and the characters were more colourful than in the Pilbara – then it would have to be our northern neighbour the Kimberley. And now Australia’s North West Tourism is giving Pilbara residents the chance to win a unique holiday to the region. Competition entrants not only have the chance to win a seven-day holiday for two, but they get to have a say in the itinerary of the trip. In an innovative twist, North West Tourism has posted videos on their website in which four Kimberley residents talk about their passion for the landscapes they live and work in. From spearfishing with Brian Lee and cruising the Orb River alongside Charlie Sharpe to riding a camel on the beach with Daryl Roberson and exploring rock art with Ebony Muirson, each Kimberley “character” gives their ideas on the perfect holiday. Entrants then vote on the trip they want to win. Australia’s North West Tourism CEO Glen Chidlow said each of the residents in the videos had a strong connection to the Kimberley. “These people bring life to the landscapes they live in,” Mr Chidlow said. “They love to share their exceptional local knowledge and larrikin humour with travellers eager to soak up this unique part of Australia,” he said. It is just such a larrikin life free of suits and ties that inspires Daryl Robeson from Cable Beach Hut in his video on the North West Tourism site. “Cable Beach is my office,”

• Brian Lee wading through Hunter Creek Daryl said in the video. “The beach is a place where you don’t really wear a suit or your boilermaker’s overalls … everyone is wearing the boardies and shirt.” “So you could be the prime minister or Jamie Packer or Joe Blogs from down the road and it doesn’t really matter.” Daryl’s relaxed holiday takes in the sands of Cable Beach, local dinosaur and pearling history and a movie at the world’s oldest outdoor picture garden. Ebony Muirson takes

campers to more remote parts of the Kimberley, flying them in on a chopper to fish, view wildlife and explore the 300-million-year-old mini Bungles. “To me the most exciting first is when you take people out to the Aboriginal rock art and they sit in that cave in silence and they are just in awe,” Ebony said. “And they usually come back fairly quiet.” To learn more about the competition visit the website at http://competition. australiasnorthwest.com/entry/.

Woodside planning floating technology for Browse gas fields By Ben Leahy Woodside is most likely to use floating LNG technology to process gas from its Browse project off the Kimberley coast, the company said on April 30. Woodside announced it had agreed on “key principles” that will apply with Shell should it use the fellow oil and gas major’s Floating LNG technology. The agreement comes two weeks after Woodside cancelled plans to build a $40bn-plus onshore processing plant at James Price Point north of Broome. Woodside CEO Peter Coleman said FLNG would be a faster and cheaper way to develop the gas basin than using an onshore plant. “This agreement enables Woodside, as operator of the Browse LNG Development, to strengthen our development and operational capabilities through the potential use of Shell’s “Design One Build Many” FLNG technology,” Mr Coleman said. “It also provides the opportunity for Western Australia to become an industrial, operational and technology centre for excellence for floating LNG worldwide.”

Premier Barnett had been pushing to have the plant built onshore as it would generate more jobs and benefits to the State’s economy. The Maritime Union Authority deputy national secretary Mick Doleman said an offshore plant would cost Australians thousands of jobs. “It’s not just workers that have a problem with offshoring – both the Coalition and Labor parties in WA oppose the idea on the legitimate grounds that it would be a bad move economically for the state,” Mr Doleman said. Environmental group WWF Australia said it supported an offshore development over Woodside’s original plan to build at James Price Point. “Whether it is floating or piping to existing facilities in the Pilbara, each alternative carries environmental risks but we believe they would be significantly less serious than a Kimberley development,” Paul Gamblin from WWF said. Woodside will have to get approval from its Browse joint venture partners before it goes ahead with plans to use FLNG.

Grants move community forward By Tamara Binamat On Wednesday evening 23 community organisations were awarded grants as part of the Woodside-operated North West Shelf Project and Pluto LNG Community Grants Program. The grants were awarded at a ceremony at the Pam Buchanan Centre in Karratha and culminate round one of the program. Round two will be open in July. • Katrina Farrell, Jennifer McMahon and Di Hall received an award on behalf of Karratha High School for the purchase of new curtains for the Performing Arts Centre

• Maggie Beattie, Stephanie Soter and Vivienne Seers from Pilbara Joblink receive the award toward an inclusive dance and music program called the Beatz Dance Crew

Community grants are available to sporting associations, not-forprofit organisations and local government authorities.

• Terre Rouge Ballet will use the grant for points for perfection workshops

• Lynelle Fozard from SDERA received a grant towards Walk to School Safely Week and Kelly Dines from Karratha Community House received a grant towards the development of living art to be installed in the play area

• Patrick Low from YACMAC received a grant toward development of the YACMAC website

Aboriginal corporations and government agencies can apply for funding if they can demonstrate all funding will be used exclusively for the benefit of communities in the Shire of Roebourne. Woodside Community Relations Manager Pilbara Matt Keogh said he has seen local people achieve incredible results using these grants. “23 local organisations will benefit from this current round of grants and I look forward to seeing what positive and sustainable benefits they can deliver for the Shire of Roebourne community,” Mr Keogh said.

• Darren Berry from Karratha Basketball Association received the grant for purchase of computer equipment

Bait training to protect Pilbara wildlife Threatened species in the Pilbara will get better protection from the threat of feral animals following Department of Environment and Conservation staff training in the safe use and handling of fox baits. DEC Pilbara feral animal control project officer Derek Sandow said staff from DEC’s Exmouth and Karratha work centres completed the training to help protect native animals from the threat of the introduced European red fox. “There are a number

of species in the Pilbara that are susceptible to predation from foxes, including the blackflanked rock wallaby and northern quoll, as well as nesting turtles such as the loggerhead, hawksbill and green turtle,” he said. “By baiting to control this predator in a safe and effective manner, native animals have a much better chance of survival and can continue to play their vital role in maintaining species diversity in the Pilbara.” Fox baiting is carried out using a salami style sausage containing the

The Red-capped Plover (Charadrius ruficapillus), also known as the Redcapped Dotterel, is a small plover that breeds in Australia. Red-capped Plovers have white under-parts and foreheads and their upper-parts are mainly grey-brown. Adult males have a rufous crown and hind neck. Adult females have a paler rufous and a grey brown crown and hind neck, with pale loreal stripe. The upper wing of the Red capped Plover shows dark brown remiges and primary coverts with a white wingbar in flight. Its length spans 14–16cm and its wingspan is 27–34 cm. It weighs around 35–40g. Breeding plumage shows a red-brown crown and nape with black margins. Non-breeding plumage is duller and lacks the black margins. The Red-capped Plover is widespread in Australia. It is a vagrant

to New Zealand, although it bred there for some time in small numbers from 1950–1980. The species occupies a range of coastal and inland habitats including estuaries, bays, beaches, sandflats and mudflats and inland saline wetlands. It is also found in inland wetland areas with bare ground. The Red-capped Plover mainly eats small invertebrates especially molluscs, crustaceans and worms. A baby Redcapped Plover will

Mr Sandow said staff participated in a series of theoretical and practical assessments to receive their 1080 baiting departmental authorisation. “The training allows staff to participate in on-ground operations as part of DEC’s Western Shield fauna conservation program and also the Federal Government’s Caring for our Country-funded Integrated Feral Animal Control At The Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area project,” he said. The majority of 1080 baiting by DEC occurs in Cape Range National Park, Ningaloo Marine Park and adjoining lands, Murujuga National Park and on some islands in the Dampier Archipelago. Other areas in the region are also baited with 1080 to control foxes, cats and wild dogs. adopt a camouflaged position that helps it avoid detection by predators such as gulls and crows. The Red-capped Plover is a seasonal breeder on the coasts of Australia, but breeds in response to unpredictable rains inland. It nests on ground in vicinity of wetlands; its nest is a small depression with no or minimal lining, with a clutch of two pale yellowish-brown eggs, irregularly spotted black. The incubation period is 30 days, with incubating mainly done by the female.

Rental affordability in the North West still ‘completely inaccessible’

Anglicare WA’s Rental Affordability Snapshot has revealed that, despite a general drop in price, the North West’s rental market is still completely inaccessible to low income earners.

Anglicare WA conducted the snapshot on 4,272 rental properties across the State on April 13, 2013. Affordability was calculated as 30 per cent of a household’s gross income, the same mark used by the Government to calculate public housing costs. The report revealed 264 of these properties were located across the Pilbara and Kimberley. The snapshot showed that not a single rental in the North West was affordable for people on benefits, pensions, or the minimum wage – this included households with two income earners. “The price of renting in the North West is simply too high for low income earners –

period,” said Anglicare North West manager Jennie Gray. “Yes, the median price has improved, but not by anywhere near as much as it needs to. “It would have to be a monumental shift.” The price of renting has generally improved in the North West. The medium price of a rental has decreased from $1,400 a week in 2012 to $950 a week in 2013 – a 32 per cent drop. In Karratha the median rental price was found to be $1,300 – eighteen per cent lower than 2012. In Broome the median rental price was found to be $790 – seven per cent lower than 2012. In Derby the median rental price was found to be $725 – twenty eight per cent lower than 2012 and in Kununurra the median rental price was found to be $630 – seven per cent higher than 2012. “These numbers are still staggeringly high,” said Ms Gray. “They are not only implausible for low income earners, but for mid-level income earners too, like retail, hospitality and

community service workers. “Businesses in those sectors are forced to pay their staff higher wages or rental subsidies so they can afford to stay.” Anglicare WA maintains its position from previous snapshots, that multiple interventions are required at both State and Federal government levels to ease the pressure on the rental market.

Minister hands out keys for GPs Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls was in Port Hedland last Friday, April 26, to hand over the keys to seven new General Practitioner houses.

Minister Brendon Grylls joins fellow dignitaries at the handover of the keys in Port Hedland

Have you considered the auction option?

The $4.5million accommodation project received $1.5million from the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program and support from the Town of Port Hedland and BHP Billiton. Mr Grylls said affordable, quality accommodation was essential to attract more doctors to the region. “Accommodation was identified as a major barrier for GPs looking to move to the Pilbara,” he said. “These new houses will help to attract more doctors to Port Hedland, which will improve access to health services for everyone in the region. “Good health care is critical to making Port Hedland a place where people want to live and work.” The Minister said the project was the first of its kind in Port Hedland.

When there are many properties listed for sale, an auction might be just the thing to give your property the edge it needs

Compared to other states and territories, home auctions are less common in Western Australia with only around 2 per cent of properties sold using this method.

might be just the thing you need to give your property the edge it needs to attract attention. Sometimes the media reports that many auctions are being passed-in at the fall of the hammer, recording no sale. However, this fails to illustrate that very often West Australian buyers will approach the auctioneer shortly after the conclusion of an auction to negotiate a sale by the more familiar private treaty method. Again, this seems to be more a part of WA’s different auction culture by consumers, but the process still serves to attract keen buyers for the seller in a shorter time. Auctions in WA are undertaken using a code of practice for the profession following consultation by REIWA with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to ensure the code accords to best practice. By contrast, around 23 per cent of properties are auctioned in Sydney, 30 per cent in Melbourne, 11 per cent in Brisbane, 27 per cent in Adelaide, 16 per cent in Darwin and 10 per cent in Canberra. Across the nation the average number of homes sold by auction is approximately one out of every five. The main reason behind the smaller auction culture in WA, seems to be the success of the ‘Offer and Acceptance’ form developed by REIWA. This reliable document used for a sale by private treaty would be familiar to most home buyers, and its simplicity is the main reason

why private treaty dominates sales methods here. However, the strong and fast market in Perth during the boom saw renewed interest in auctions and one that wasn’t just confined to the western suburbs or to premium properties. When prices were rising quickly during that period, it was often hard for agents to determine the right price for a property or anticipate what a purchaser might be prepared to pay, so an auction proved an ideal way to get the best price for the seller, often exceeding their expectations. Of course, the WA market is no longer booming and the median price is more stable, but an auction with its short but high profile marketing campaign can be very effective at bringing out the more serious buyers on the day. When there are many properties listed for sale and hesitant buyers are spoiled with choice, an auction

Cossack has a unique history. Officially established in 1872, it was the first port on WA’s West Pilbara Coast and attracted thousands of fortune seekers during the Pilbara gold rush. This week’s health Heart disease

condition

in

focus:

The cardiovascular system is an intricate network of arteries, capillaries and veins flowing to and from the heart pumping blood, oxygen and nutrients and removing metabolic waste. Cardiovascular disease is an umbrella term including conditions such as atherosclerosis, high cholesterol, hypertrophy, scarring, heart failure, coronary insufficiency, aneurysm, clots and nephrosclerosis.

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is the top risk factor. Disease of this system accounts for the highest rate of mortality and morbidity in the developed world, killing one Australian every 12 minutes - a very serious matter! Luckily, diet and lifestyle are two of the top causes of the disease, therefore there also preventatives and treatments.

Here are my key tips for increasing cardiovascular health: 1. Increase healthy fats Omega 3 has a proven anti-clotting affect on the blood and also reduces inflammation. Find this in oily fish, walnuts, flaxseeds also known as linseed or use as an oil. Monounsaturated fats regulate LDL and HDL cholesterol. Find this in nuts, avocado, legumes and seeds. A lot of these foods are also high in Vitamin E, which increases circulation. 2. Increase blood thinning foods Garlic, ginger and onion have bloodthinning properties, helping it to flow through blood vessels freely increasing circulation and avoiding clots. They are

also packed full of powerful antioxidants to protect the vessels as well as the heart. 3. Reduce stress Hormones released during times of stress greatly increase your blood pressure, straining the heart muscle. Finding outlets for stress each day is important for everyone. Deep breathing techniques, meditation, journal writing, walking or hobbies are great ways to do so. 4. Regulate fluids Minimise caffeine (tea, coffee, energy drinks and chocolate) as it increases your blood pressure via the stress

hormone cortisol. It is also a diuretic encouraging urination, which unbalances blood pressure further. Increase water (2 litres at least daily) and herbal tea to regulate blood pressure. Chamomile tea has a calming affect on the body, use during times of stress. 5. Eat a rainbow of fruit and vegetables everyday Fruit and vegetables provide antioxidants to protect the heart and vessels. They also contain soluble fibre, which helps to regulate LDL and HDL cholesterol.

6. Exercise daily The heart is a muscle that needs to be worked to strengthen, aim for 30 minutes each day. Join a sports team, take a walk during your lunch break, take the stairs when possible and dust the cobwebs off your pushbike.

A million reasons to buy a Pink Bun Lose Weight & Gain Energy Nutrition for a Better Life Personalised Programme Ongoing Support 30 Day Money Back Guarantee Phone Teegan 0438 644 878

Until May 22 Karratha bakers will be turning pink and donating 100 per cent of the sale of their Pink Finger Buns to Breast Cancer Network Australia. Bakers Delight bakeries are aiming to raise a record breaking $1.2 million through its Pink Bun campaign to help fund BCNA’s work to ensure that women diagnosed with breast cancer, and their families, receive the very best treatment, care and support possible. The money raised by Bakers Delight customers will support BCNA’s free information resources,

such as the My Journey Kit, a resource for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer. Maxine Morand, BCNA CEO and a breast cancer survivor herself, said the support provided through the Bakers Delight Pink Bun campaign is just as important as ever. “The Pink Bun campaign raised more than $1 million for BCNA in 2012, and last year 81 per cent of women newly diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia received a My Journey Kit,” she said.

Pilbara Dental Care

“That’s a figure we’re incredibly proud of at BCNA, but one that wouldn’t be possible without the help of Bakers Delight and their customers.” Staff at Bakers Delight Karratha hope to make this the most successful Pink Bun campaign ever, aiming to do their bit to better the $1 million raised in 2012. Customers are also encouraged to leave a personal message on a Pink Lady silhouette for a gold coin donation. The message may be in support or memory of a loved one with breast cancer in their family or community. The silhouettes will be displayed around the bakery during the campaign.

artists such as Sheryl Crow and Jimmy Barnes. With new songs to debut to the Pilbara, expect to see this feisty singer, guitarist and front woman showcase the best of blues, roots, reggae and gypsy rock. One of the new songs to be debuted in Karratha is called Stole Them Away, which has proved a crowd pleaser. “It’s a dancy, rocky, slide electric guitar type with a bit of a country feel song,” Toby revealed. “It’s pretty much me making a little fun of one of my band members actually. “He’s a really hippie, surfer guy, and he kept going out to the bars and not having a lot of luck with the ladies until he realised all the cowboys knew how to bootscoot and linedance. “So he actually went out and booked himself dance lessons!” The lineup for Toby’s band in Karratha includes well-known singer/songwriter Simon Kelly on drums and backing vocals, Gavin Arnold on bass guitar and Daryl Eagle on electric guitar.

Due to popular demand, West Australian roots artist Toby Beard is returning to the North West to rock Exmouth, Coral Bay and Karratha. The ”one part orchestra, one part bonfire jam, one part circus” artist last visited late2012, and has since been on two European tours, tours in Byron Bay, Melbourne and around WA. Toby and her band performed 15 shows in Europe in March, which Toby says is her best European show yet. “You could really see bigger crowds and everything showed that the work we’re doing is starting to pay off,” she said. “Experiencing different types of venues and different types of audiences is so good because it opens your mind to new ideas on stage and new songs, which we’ll be bringing to Karratha with us.” Toby plays mostly originals but throws in covers by artists such as Janis Joplin, Paul Kelly, Eric Clapton and Johnny Cash. Toby can boast performances alongside Stevie Wonder and Alicia keys and supporting

With song titles like these, the band has been described on more than one occasion as “weird”, which Ben said is probably fitting. “With people calling us weird, I’m fine,” he said. “I quite like that word. “I guess our lyrics are pretty strange but it’s funny, I feel completely normal but a lot of people tell me I’m weird or crazy. “Crazy people are more colourful anyway.”

Head to the Tambrey Tavern in Karratha this Friday May 10 to catch these songs and more of Regurgitator’s hits played live on stage. Following the legendary Australian band’s successful headline show at 2012’s North West Fest – the ‘Gurge’ are coming to Karratha as part of the Groovin’ the Moo tour. “Its feels really good [to be coming back to the Pilbara] because the last time we played there it was heaps of fun,” said bass player Ben Ely. “We had a really cool time down at the water too, it’s a very beautiful part of the world.” The trio, Quan Yeomans (lead vocals, guitar), Ben Ely (bass, vocals) and Peter Kostic (drums) have been together for 20 years, and are still keeping their music relevant today. Although its hard to pin down a style or genre of music for Regurgitator, it’s clear the band have a connection that can see them evolve as they write hip-hop,

folk, or hard out rock music. Their often controversial and obscene lyrics define the eclectic reputation of the group. “A lot of fads have come and gone since we’ve been together,” Ben said. “There’s been grunge, then electronic music became popular, then eighties, then rock n roll was big. “The good thing about our band is we get on really well and experiment with a lot of things, so we don’t have to stick to one sound.” Regurgitator will be playing

DAMPIER BEACHSIDE MARKETS From 8:30am Hampton Harbour Oval, Dampier Heaps of stalls and great activities for the kids

West Australian performer Karin Page will headline next weekend’s Markets and Melodies event at South Hedland Town Square. The lead singer of band China Doll, folk/pop artist Karin Page has carved a successful full-time career as a singer/songwriter. Karin was finalist in the Telstra Road to Discovery competition in the performer category and attended the finals in Tamworth last year. Mining workforce specialist launches in WA mines want to do a full review of work practices to ensure optimal efficiency.” One Key Resources last year launched Australia’s first animated mining training video for excavator and dump truck operators. The video immerses participants in the mining environment and provides detailed information and familiarisation with equipment and procedures. BHP Billiton will be the first to run the training program in its iron ore mines.

Many mines have put up with inefficient practices because they were making money during the boom times, however now mines want to do a full review of work practices to ensure optimal efficiency • Grant Wechsel

Mr Marmion used the closing ceremony address to invite

“LNG18 is expected to attract 5,000 delegates and exhibitors and inject more than $50million into the State’s economy, the largest such event in WA’s history,” Mr Marmion said. “It will be an unparalleled opportunity to promote Western Australia’s petroleum resources and role as a global energy supplier, and Perth as a major centre for expertise

and services to the petroleum industry in Australia and Asia.” While in Houston Mr Marmion met with senior executives from exploration, production and services companies from the USA, Europe and Asia. “This interaction is crucial, as Western Australia is becoming a world leader in LNG,” he said. “By 2016, WA is expected to have an annual LNG production capacity of more than 50 million tonnes - up from the current level of 20 million tonnes.”

Australian markets had a very strong week with the ASX200 closing up 3.37 per cent (166 points) for the week ending April 26. It seems more likely we will receive another rate cut in the next couple of months, and so savvy investors are seeking better returns from high yielding securities, including the banks and Telstra. This drive towards yield has sent Telstra to a high not seen since 2005. Thankfully, for many in the gold industry, the precious metal had one of its best weekly performances on record, alleviating fears of a crash below $1,300 per ounce. It’s now sitting comfortably above $1,450. This bounce hasn’t saved the likes of Focus Minerals and Tanami gold from closing mines. Tanami has had to put its flagship mine Coyote on care and maintenance, while Focus has shuttered its Laverton operations.

Stock Tip of the Week AMP Ltd (AMP) – ACCUMULATE AMP Limited is an Australasian manager and life insurer.

However, aggregate activity is then expected to slip 2013/14, the first decline since 2000/01, and continue to fall over each of the subsequent three years. BIS Shrapnel said by 2016/17, activity will be 20 per cent below the 2012/13 peak.

The group comprises AMP Financial Services, which owns an Australian financial planning network, and AMP Capital Investors, a fund manager. AMP deserves to trade at a premium to peers to reflect its high market shares, the strong brand, the large customer base, the industry´s lowest unit costs and especially the large aligned planner network, an enduring competitive advantage. We are optimistic about AMP´s long-term prospects given the demographic trends and compulsory superannuation contributions, which support the asset management industry’s aboveaverage growth. Hartleys rates AMP as an ACCUMULATE with a valuation of $7.00.

Mining workforce specialist One Key Resources has opened its first office in Western Australia to meet demand for skilled workers and productivity boosting training programs. The Perth branch will offer labour hire services and host a number of trainers who will provide familiarisation and proficiency training programs to mining clients. One Key Resources is a specialist provider of workforce development, recruitment, training and managed production solutions to the mining, resources and civil infrastructure industries. Managing director Grant Wechsel said the new office will allow One Key to service its existing mining contracts in the Pilbara while also serving as a base for its specialist training team. He said demand for One Key’s services was growing, with around 100 of its specialist workforce now working in various mines across the state. “Despite falling commodity prices and significant cost cutting, One Key Resources is experiencing a spike

public notice

Public Notice Water supply improvement: Shire of Ashburton – Onslow Notice of Proposal to construct a 5000 cubic metre ground level tank, pumping station, inlet and outlet supply mains and reticulation cross connections

• Responses submitted are confidential • Only one form per business needs to be submitted For more information contact Tiffany Allen, Pilbara Development Commission on 6552 4666 or email tiffany.allen@pdc.wa.gov.au adcorp F84818

To upgrade the water supply at Onslow, the Water Corporation proposes to construct the following works:  A ground level water storage tank of about 5000 cubic metres capacity, 27 metres in diameter and 11 metres high at the proposed Onslow Tank site no. 4  A booster pump station at the proposed Onslow Tank site no. 4  An overflow sump with a capacity of about 540 cubic metres  200mm nominal diameter inlet and outlet pipelines, each about 183 metres from Onslow Road to the proposed Onslow Tank site no. 4, including all fittings and connections  375mm nominal diameter outlet pipeline, about 1600 metres from the proposed Onslow Tank site no. 4 to a tie-in at Watson Drive, including all fittings and connections  100mm nominal diameter cross-connection at First Street and Third Avenue  150mm nominal diameter cross-connection at Onslow Road and Beadon Creek Road  200mm nominal diameter cross connection at Simpson Street and Clarke Place These works will provide a boosted reticulation system from the new Onslow Tank site no.4, and enable the existing tank sites no.1, no. 2 and no.3 to be removed from service. It will also improve water pressure in the town. The proposed location of the works is within the existing Water Corporation site (Lot 185), road reserves of Onslow Road, Macedon Road, First Street, Third Avenue, Beadon Creek Road, Simpson Street and Clarke Place, and new easements to be sought through Lots 105 and 303. The proposed pipeline routes were selected after consultation with the Shire of Ashburton and LandCorp and take into account alignment of a proposed road into Onslow. Should this alignment change, any impact on the proposed pipeline route will be considered and alterations made if required. A further Notice of Proposal amendment will be issued if the change in alignment is significant. Subject to obtaining all the necessary approvals, the proposed works are scheduled to commence in early 2014 and will continue for about 6 months. Construction of the proposed pipelines will generally be by open-cut excavation, which will be backfilled and restored. A copy of this Notice of Proposal (referred to as KX31-0-1) is available for viewing during office hours at the Water Corporation’s North West Regional Office, 16 DeGrey Place, Karratha. Further information may be obtained by contacting the Project Manager, Mr Jeff Lukies, on (08) 9420 2220. Objections to the proposed works should be lodged in writing to the Project Manager, Mr Jeff Lukies, Water Corporation PO Box 100, Leederville WA 6902 or via email to jeff.lukies@watercorporation.com.au before close of business on Friday, 31 May 2013. adcorp F84531

Life is a beach for polo players By Ben Leahy With the travel season kicking off, another attraction that might tempt locals beyond the Pilbara’s borders this month is the annual Pinctada Cable Beach Polo tournament being held this year from May 18 to 19. A team touring from India will be among the star attractions as they play an international match against Australia, while young Aboriginal stockmen will also saddle up to take part in the curtain raising games. Not just a unique site with polo players galloping over the sands of one of the North West’s most picturesque beaches, the polo tournament is also a lively tourist attraction drawing visitors from around Australia. With surfers, children and families watching from the sands, Marilynne Paspaley from sponsor Pinctada Hotels & Resorts said

spectators have the option of watching the action free from the beach or purchasing tickets to the VIP Marquees. “Each day of the tournament has a different theme – Saturday is the more casual ‘Australian beach day’ and this theme will be embraced when the marquee is transformed to the Coopers 1862 Kimberley Lounge,” Marilynne said. “To reflect the glamour and excitement of the international clash on the Sunday, the marquee will be more akin to Melbourne’s Spring racing carnival Birdcage with a ‘barefoot elegance’ dress code.” The marquees will be stocked with yummy booze and fine food, while the tournament will also feature an opening and closing reception and dinner under the stars. By Ben Leahy Last year’s premiers the Port Hedland Rovers are on top of the ladder after two rounds of the of the North Pilbara Football League season having pipped the Dampier Sharks by 13 points at Windy Ridge Oval on Saturday night. The Karratha Falcons remain the only other unbeaten team after an even more nail biting two point win over the South Hedland Swans. In a more unusual clash, the Karratha Kats and Wickham Wolves were forced to abandon their game after lightning lit up the Pilbara sky.

Bluewater Tackle

Exmouth Fishing Report By Jenni Gates The Pannawonica Sporting Club held their inaugural fishing and spearing competition recently, which was proudly supported by many local and Western Australian businesses including Tackle World Exmouth. There are many keen anglers living in Pannawonica and 40 competitors from 13 teams, which included 4 juniors, enjoyed the event over two weekends. Catches included wahoo, mackerel, red emperor, spangled emperor and trout from the bluewater section, while mudcrabs, cod and jacks were amongst the creek captures. The spearfishing competitors got some great fish too, with Tom Wood taking out Champion Spearo. Aiden Taylor won Champion Angler Junior with some quality creek species including a 1.5kg mudcrab. Champion Bluewater Team was won by True Blue, with angler Kane Armstrong onboard who also took out Champion Angler. As many of you know, I personally haven’t been out fishing as much in the last year with the arrival of our baby boy, Kalvin.

The waters are cooling and thankfully there have been no more irukandji reports and there are not expected to be any more with these cooler temperatures.

He turns one this week (already!) and prior to his birthday we took him out for his first day marlin fishing and camping on the boat. He got to see some amazing sights and reminded me how lucky we are here in the North West. The weather was sensational and the water clarity an amazingly deep blue/purple.

As we head in to winter, it’s always a pleasure to see some of the familiar seasonal faces returning to Exmouth.

We found a bait ball from top to bottom in 94m of water north of Long Island that had a massive manta ray gorging on it.

Many of the retirees who come here each year have already been hitting the shores in search of the whiting, spangled emperor, bluebone, squid and other tasty delights.

We tagged two black marlin that day and saw some great birds, seasnakes, tuna and even a whale that seemed lost at this time of year.

Incoming reports include whiting, flathead and bream around Learmonth Jetty, while one gentleman was not happy about there being no squid in an area reported the previous week.

We were very grateful for the day with the fresh clean air, the ocean plentiful, the birds active and seas calm. Spanish mackerel have not been responding well to lures this week, however spearfishermen have been getting into some thick schools and selectively taking one home for dinner. Ross Lawrence is one such angler and is pictured this week with a cracking Spanish mack.

We all know, that ‘fishing is fishing’ and it can change at any time. There is also that element of ‘luck’ in fishing - sometimes it can be good, other times, bad. We know one thing for sure though - we are very lucky here in the North West with such variety and opportunity.

success. “We’ve got a good range of skaters from mediums to beginners to experienced skaters,” Shaun said. “Today has been mainly about interacting with the crew that’s here, giving away some prizes and having some mini competitions, while yesterday was more about one on one coaching sessions. “So far we’ve had a grip off, we’ve had a best trick competition and a foot down competition. “It’s not about first or second, it’s just about having fun.”

New water polo league to start up at Leisureplex By Ben Leahy There is a new social game looking to make a splash on Karratha’s sporting scene now that a group of locals are hoping to start a water polo competition. Anouska Angove from the newly formed Karratha Water Polo Association said the group hopes to kick off with a series of social games once the new Karratha Leisureplex swimming pool opens in late June or early July. Having played in Kalgoorlie and Hedland and represented the WA’s Country Water Polo team, Anouska said

water polo is great for a hard workout followed by a relaxed yarn afterwards. “Water polo is fantastic for fitness, and if you can swim and throw a ball you can play water polo,” she a said. “It is just combining the two that some people find a little bit tricky.” The first matches will be friendly, social events featuring a mix of men and women, according to Anouska. “That way people can learn the rules of the game and then afterwards you can have a barbie and a few drinks, and it is great for the families to come down,” she said.

“The best part of water polo for me is that it is a really social game.” Anouska said the Shire of Roebourne has also invited the Water Polo Association to play an exhibition match on the night the new Leisureplex sporting facilities open, expected to be in late June. With Anouska inviting friends she used to play with in Hedland to take part in the match, it makes a perfect opportunity for interested polo players to get an idea what they are in for. At 8am on Sunday April 14, five men donning lime green mankinis hopped in their sea kayaks at Coral Bay and started paddling north along the Ningaloo coast. Their final destination was 180 kilometres away at the northern tip of Cape Range - Vlamingh Head Lighthouse. The Dampier Mankini Qajaq (Kayak) Club first hatched the plan for their inaugural sea kayak expedition late last year. “We wanted our Club’s first expedition to be scenic and adventurous, but also a little ambitious,” said Club President Paul “Richo” Richardson. “There are only a handful of people that have paddled sea kayaks this kind of distance along the Ningaloo coast. “I’d hazard a guess that we’re the first group to do the stretch between Coral Bay and Vlamingh Head Lighthouse using only paddle power (no sails) dressed in mankinis. “For us, the expedition had an extra special purpose. “Early in the trip planning, we had decided to raise funds for the Kids Cancer Support Group. “They’re based out of Ward 3B in the Princess Margaret Hospital, Perth. “To date, we suspect we’ve raised close to $10,000.00 through both corporate and personal donations. “The support we’ve received has been unprecedented.” During the expedition, the team were assisted by Perth ring-in and friend of the Club, Greg Jack. Greg drove his 4WD support vehicle and Coates Hire trailer along the coastal access track between Coral Bay and Cape Range, stopping each night at designated camp spots to meet up with the paddlers. Greg’s role was to provide emergency assistance, carry food, water and camping equipment, supply the team with fresh fish, undertake field mankini extractions and keep the beer supply chilled. On Day 1 of the expedition, the team kayaked 20km north of Coral Bay to 9 Mile camp on Cardabia Station - a ‘warm up’ paddle to make sure both their crafts and bodies would stand up to the full six-day challenge. In the five days to follow, the team travelled between 30 and 35 kilometres each day, or anywhere between five and seven hours in the cockpit. “We had some incredible wildlife encounters in the Marine Park,” Paul

said. “We must have seen hundreds of turtles over the six days. “On three occasions, we had bottlenose and Indo-Pacific Humpback dolphins riding the waves alongside us. “Dugongs feeding in the shallow seagrass beds in the reef lagoon surfaced right next to our crafts for a quick breath and a look around. “At one point, we were also closely scrutinised by a two-metre tiger shark. “The trip wasn’t without its fair share of challenges and a few hairy incidents. “On the final day of our expedition, we had one particular hair raising moment. “The team needed to round a series of exposed points in order to reach the Lighthouse. “Unfortunately, the swell had picked up during the evening and we found large waves breaking quite close to shore. “While trying to round Jurabi Point, the yaks got caught in a set of large breaking waves. “One kayak was capsized and suffered rudder damage and the remaining crafts and their skippers were hit hard and shaken. “The team regrouped on shore, repairs were made and a safe passage was found around the points. “We’d like to send out a big thank you to our major two major sponsors Australia Marine Services and Mermaid Marine Australia. “We also received some fantastic sponsorship and in kind support from local businesses AllPests, BCH Hyder, Pindan, Seaforce, Lazer Linings, Coates Hire and Jotun (Marine Coatings). Ningaloo Station, the Department of Environment and Conservation (Exmouth), Bayview Caravan Park and Potshot Hotel also helped the team along the journey through accommodation fee waivers. Although the expedition has now come to a close, the DMQC is still searching for any last minute donations for the Kids Cancer Support Group. If you would like to find out how to make a donation, please contact the DMQC on dampiermankiniyaks@ yahoo.com.au or message us on our Facebook page. All monies raised will be applied directly to making a big difference to the lives of some little people at Ward 3B, Princess Margaret Hospital.
