WIN the Ultimate Exmouth
• The family were believed to be about 5.5km north of Warroora Station
Holiday turns to tragedy for family in Coral Bay By Tamara Binamat A woman’s body was discovered washed ashore at a beach just south of Coral Bay on Wednesday afternoon. It is believed the 41-year-old woman was snorkelling before her death. A land, sea and air search was deployed by Thursday morning as police and State Emergency Services searched for the woman’s 48-year-old husband, also missing in the water.
Exploit!
The couple’s two children, aged 10 and 13-years-old were believed to be on the beach with another person when the deceased woman was discovered.
To celebrate the 2013 Ningaloo Whaleshark Festival, the MG Kailis Fish Trucks are giving you a chance to win the Ultimate Exmouth Exploit, where you can take advantage of the very best of Exmouth, our home since 1962.
An EPIRB activation alerted police just after 4pm on the Wednesday. The family are believed to have been holidaying from the ACT, with members of their family arrived Thursday to care for the couple’s children.
The Ultimate Exmouth Exploit is valued at over $2,300!
Community hub to boost Dampier childcare services By Ben Leahy Dampier residents could soon get access to increased childcare and medical services after Rio Tinto committed $9.4m to build a Dampier community hub in partnership with the Shire of Roebourne. The community hub is expected to include a childcare centre for 70 children, a library and offices and meeting rooms for up to four organisations, including the Dampier Community Association and a possible doctor’s clinic. The proposal also includes a series of additional multipurpose rooms for use by art, exercise and other community groups. The community hub will now need to get approval from Shire Councillors at this Monday’s Council meeting before Shire staff seek tenders from architectural firms to Conor O’Brien the president of the Dampier Community Association, which would likely set up its office alongside a tourist desk in the new community hub, said the hub
would provide a boost to the town centre. “With the demolition of the old hospital building and an ageing community hall there is significant community need for this new multi-functional building, as well as the refurbishment of the hall,” Mr O’Brien said. “The sooner this project gets off the ground, the better off the community will be.” The proposal to build the community hub comes as Rio Tinto and the Shire of Roebourne last week announced a five-year partnership to support cultural events and improve community infrastructure in Dampier, Wickham and Karratha. But it is also investment that many residents say has been a long time in coming. Dampier made headlines last year when a Commsec report named it as the richest town in Australia with the nation’s highest average wage. This came despite regular complaints that the town lacked adequate services, highlighted by the closure of the Dampier
post office in March. The Dampier Community Association had hoped the new community hub would include plans for a post office or pharmacy, but the Shire intends it to instead focus on boosting childcare options with additional long day care places for 70 children. Currently, Dampier’s Early Learning Centre is at capacity with 17 children and a reported 30 families on its waitlist. Residents had also requested doctor and allied health services, but WA Country Health Services is not intending to provide these in Dampier. The community hub proposal therefore includes space for up to three clinic rooms should a private medical practice be interested in setting up in Dampier. “DCA is encouraging Dampier’s residents to come along to Monday’s Council meeting, which will be held in Dampier, as this is a major opportunity to find out about the facilities and services that will be housed in this building,” Mr O’Brien said.

By Tamara Binamat Police are appealing for any witnesses to a hit and run incident where a lady was injured after going to the aid of a young child. At around 11:15pm on Friday May 10 an 18-year-old female from Millars Well arrived home to her address on Wotherspoon road in Karratha when she noticed a young child on the road. She went out onto the road to investigate and subsequently was hit by a vehicle. The driver took the child and left the area. Police suspect the child was known to the driver. As a result of the hit and run the victim has suffered a broken pelvis. Anyone in the area at that time who may have seen something suspicious is urged to call Karratha Police.

• Thirsty Camel Liquor store in Karratha
By Tamara Binamat Two young men have been charged with several offences after a vehicle was stolen in Karratha and used to ram raid a local liquor store. At 2:15am Sunday May 12 offenders stole a five-tonne truck from a worksite near the Pelago building in Karratha’s CBD. The vehicle was driven around Karratha before it was used to reverse into the front of the Thirsty Camel bottle shop on Millstream road. The truck cause extensive damage to the premises and police say a small amount of alcohol was stolen. The offenders then took the truck on a joyride to various nightspots around Karratha. Police located the vehicle later
that same morning at Balmoral and Dampier Roads at Baynton West, where the passenger in the truck was apprehended. A short time later police apprehended the driver. Police are making enquiries as to who participated in the joyride. A 21-year-old male from Bulgarra was charged with aggravated burglary, stealing a motor vehicle and stealing. A 19-year-old male from Bulgarra was charged with burglary, stealing a motor vehicle, aggravated burglary, stealing, criminal damage and further charged with an unrelated burglary in the South West. Karratha is closer to welcoming its newest suburb with the Mulataga Development Plan and the 2,000 new apartments and houses it will bring to go before council for final approval this Monday. The 168ha Mulataga development will include a coastal foreshore and business district, a primary school and mix of housing options. Located next to Bulgarra, it will be Karratha’s first waterfront community with a proposed twokilometre-long foreshore on Nickol Bay. Developers expect this coastal business district to become a hub for shopping and dining with 1,500sqm of commercial space, including 500sqm for retail outlets. If Councillors approve the development plan, it will go to the Western Australian Planning Commission for final approval and then be ready for the roll out of the first stage of land subdivisions.
“The need for increased municipal facilities is seen as critical to the development of the Shire of Roebourne and its ability to accommodate staff and Council, the Shire said in its agenda report for this Monday’s Council meeting.

to accommodate an increase in staff over the coming years and improve the cultural life of Karratha.
The preferred site for a new library would be in the $100m The Quarter project to be constructed on Sharpe Avenue. And another batch of State Government land on Sharpe Avenue South is currently preferred for a new art studio and gallery, a theatre for stage shows, pavilion for exhibitions and functions and an outdoor event space. Thinc Project’s report also recommended that a museum be set up in Karratha, although it didn’t include it as part of the civic precinct project. The consultants rejected the idea of building a new movie cinema, stating that this should be left to private investors.

Ningaloo stingrays important indicators of coastal health By Ben Leahy With the whale sharks returning on their annual migration to Ningaloo and their namesake festival about to begin, a new study has shed light on the diets and feeding habits of their neighbours – the Ningaloo stingrays. Researchers behind the study said they hope to get out the message that stingrays are important indicators of the ecological health of the coastal region because their foraging habits create feeding opportunities for other animals. Dr Owen O’Shea from the Australian Institute of Marine Science said that while scientific research tended to focus on sharks, stingrays were being threatened by many of the same pressures. “As meso-predators, stingrays are an important link between the top and bottom of the food chain,” Dr O’Shea said.
“They are ‘engineers of the sea’, changing and creating habitats as they feed. “When looking for food, rays churn up the sediment on the ocean floor, which is very important, both physically and at a chemical level. “The physical act of disturbing the sediment resuspends nutrients, but also allows other creatures to access hidden prey, which they previously couldn’t reach.” During the study, Dr O’Shea and his team analysed the stomach and gut contents of 170 rays across 18 different Ningaloo Reef locations. With five species of stingray sharing the same habitat, researchers expected to find that different species would feed upon different prey to reduce competition and ensure there are enough resources to go around. But the findings proved that this wasn’t necessarily the case. “Four of the five species

• Owen O’Shea stingray we examined had overlapping diets consisting mainly of marine worms,” Dr O’Shea said. “This suggests that the area supports a biologically rich community with an ample supply of food, so the need to share resources was not apparent.” Dr O’Shea hopes his research, which has just been published in the Journal of Fish Biology, will allow decision-makers to consider the impact any coastal development will have on ray populations and the functions they perform.

Turn of the century films to screen at Ningaloo By Ben Leahy Exmouth school students are promising to put on one of the more unique shows at this months’ Ningaloo Whaleshark Festival in Exmouth from May 24 to 26. The students from Exmouth District High School together with teacher Jarrad Blackburn have composed a music score they will play to a May 25 screening of a rare collection of silent films dating to the turn of the century. The EXFX Silent Short Film Festival features films by the Corrick Family, who toured Australia, Asia and Europe between 1897 and 1914, showing their collection of short films along the way. The Corricks were travelling entertainers, who produced twohour performances of poetry recitals, comedy acts and sing-alongs. But one of their most popular segments was when, in 1901, they began projecting a program of silent films to their audiences that showcased the latest newsreels, travelogues and dramas from around the world. “The Corricks displayed a taste for innovative special effects films, including RW Paul’s The Hand of the Artist (1906) and morality tales such as
Pathés La Poule aux Oeufs d’Or (1905, The Hen that Laid the Golden Egg),” the film and sound archive writes on its website. “For many in the audience, films such as Pathé’s Du Caire aux Pyramides (1905, From Cairo to the Pyramids) offered a rare glimpse of the outside world, while others hinted at the dramatic technological and social changes that marked the early 20th century.” In 1907, the family bought their own motion picture camera and made films, such as Street Scenes in Perth (1907), which they shot, edited and screened in one day. This became a marketing tool for the family when they travelled to new towns as they would draw locals in by advertising their intention to make a movie at a set location and then screen it that night. The result for modern audiences is a fascinating look into
turn of the century art and life in Australia and the across the world. For the Exmouth music students, the performance not only gives them the chance to learn about these rare films but to also develop event management and production skills. The Corrick Family films have been provided by the National Film Sound and Archive Australia with Rio Tinto sponsoring the event. The Ningaloo Whaleshark Festival is a community event to celebrate the return of the whale sharks to Ningaloo each year. Festival packages, including whale shark swims, accommodation and tickets to festival events, are available at the Exmouth Visitor Centre 9949 1176. Tickets to the EXFX Silent Short Film Festival can be purchased for $10 per person from Idaho Boutique 9949 2746.

Pilbara mum to dash for cash for children’s hospital By Ben Leahy Wickham mum Maryanne Bailey is training hard to put her best foot forward for the hospital that helped her son when he needed it most. Maryanne will next Saturday May 26 take part in the HBF Run for a Reason fun run, covering a 12-kilometre course through Perth to raise money for the Princess Margaret Hospital. She is pulling on her running shoes to show her appreciation for PMH after her three-year-old son Essington was rushed down to Perth in February, where he was found to have several salivary gland stones in his face. Although not a serious condition, the toddler had to spend the next 11 days at PMH undergoing multiple tests in addition to an operation. “It was a really difficult time for us all, especially because we were all so far from home,” Ms Bailey said. “But the staff at PMH were so supportive and were there for us the entire time.” Now that he’s healthy, Essington will be out on the course too as he and his dad and older brother cheer on mum Maryanne from the sidelines.
PMH Foundation’s CEO, Denys Pearce, said the fundraising body is extremely grateful to supporters, who help to raise money through events like HBF Run for a Reason. “Through the dedication and hard work of our supporters we can raise awareness and funds to help children across our state,” Mr Pearce said. “We are indebted to those community members who help us to make things better for the kids.” Since its inception in 1998, PMH Foundation has helped raised more than $46m in financial support for PMH. This generosity has helped to fund life-saving research, specialist staff, vital equipment, complementary services and capital projects. The 2013 HBF Run for a Reason will take place on May 26 and include a four kilometre or 12 kilometre course around Perth’s CBD. Locals who would like to support Maryanne Bailey in her efforts to raise money for the Foundation can make a donation to her personalised fundraising page at http://hbfrunfundraising.com.au/ maryanne_bailey.

Red Dog’s descendants to strut their stuff By Ben Leahy It’s not just the athletes paddling, running and cycling their way through the relay challenge, who are gearing up to take part in the inaugural Red Dog Festival. Now proud pooch owners can also show off their best mates in a dog show to be held on the final day of the festival on June 2. Owners will have the chance to enter their pets into four categories: the Best dog and owner lookalike, the Best smiling dog, the Best red dog (kelpie or kelpie-cross) and the Best in show. Dr Rick Fenny, who was vet to the original Red Dog in the 1970s, will be on hand to judge the show with $300 prizes to be awarded in each category. And with Dampier being home to the original Red Dog, competition in the red kelpie category is bound to be stiff. The Pilbara Echo has already featured Darren Phegan in a past edition, who not only owns red kelpie Finley but also takes him for drives in the Hamersley Iron bus featured in the 2011 Red Dog movie. Yet if that is a hard act to top, it is not stopping Perth resident Lena Wiggerman from loading up her husband and red kelpie Widgee and driving north to take part in the dog show. Lena lived in Newman for three years in the 1970s, but she only recently heard about Red Dog from a colleague before becoming even more fascinated with kelpies after the movie came out in 2011. “And I’ve always loved the Pilbara so when I saw the Red Dog Festival advertised, I thought, ‘Whoopee, let’s load ourselves into the car and go’,” Lena said. She added that Widgee might not be the most confident performer at the festival’s dog show.
“She’ll probably be a little bit bewildered by the people because she does suffer from separation anxiety,” Lena said. Widgee developed her anxiety when she was separated from her previous owner, who was 80-years old at the time and had to move into a nursing home. After spending four weeks in the pound, Lena rescued Widgee, having heard about her through friends. “We opened the cage and this gorgeous red thing got out and immediately lay on the back with her paws in the air and the ranger’s comment was that she was too nice a dog to be put down,” Lena said. Lena and her husband Don also took Widgee to visit her previous owner in the nursing home. “And Widgee acted so gentle with old Reg [her previous owner] it was most touching,” Lena said. “With him she went up gently and put her head onto his lap and looked at him with those eyes, everyone was in tears I tell you.” According to Lena, Widgee’s charm in the competition will be her sweet character and a few touch ups to cover up the odd grey hair. “My hair’s the same colour as the dog,” Lena said. “Let’s just say we have beauty treatments together.” Entry forms can be found online and at retail outlets around Karratha. Completed forms and canine pictures must be dropped into the Karratha Vet Hospital at 20 Warambie Road by Monday May 27. Entry is $5 with proceeds going to animal welfare group SAFE. The dog show will be at Hampton Oval in Dampier at 12.30pm on Sunday June 2.

Cape Lambert celebrates arrival of impressive $15m tug Rio Tinto’s Cape Lambert Port operations are celebrating multiple milestones this week as the target of 290 million tonne capacity for Pilbara operations draws closer. Senior Rio Tinto executives welcomed new tugs, took delivery of new tug pens and officially opened the Yigara Bridge situated between Cape Lambert operations and the town of Wickham on Wednesday. Rio Tinto Pilbara Supply Chain chief operating office Clayton Walker officially took delivery of the first tugboat to arrive in the Pilbara - part of the planned $90 million upgrade to the tug and line-boat fleet. Six of the seven tugs have now been delivered to Australia, with the last one due to arrive late 2014. Each tug is worth around $15 million, and built in Turkey. They travelled 29,000kms by sea,
taking 70 days to reach Australia. “These new tugs are bigger, stronger, faster and more stable in the water compared to their predecessors, and this delivery heralds a milestone in the history of Rio Tinto’s port operations as the biggest tug build the company has undertaken,” Mr Walker said. Mr Walker said it would significantly add to the number and capability of Rio Tinto’s existing fleet of tugboats and the state-ofthe art design and quality would meet the demanding climatic and operational conditions at the ports. To house the new tugs, Rio Tinto has also constructed new tug pens with the capacity to berth four vessels. The new cyclone-rated pens were formally handed over to Port Operations today by the construction team, with final commissioning and other minor
works still to be completed. Rio Tinto’s managing director Expansion Projects David Joyce then officially opened the 850 metre long (including the entry and exit ramps) Yigara Bridge, built to ensure the safe passage of road users as they cross the 8 line railway network coming in and out of Cape Lambert. Rio Tinto announced last week the construction of another bridge on the North West Coastal Highway that will also provide safe passage across this same rail network. “Yigara Bridge is an impressive structure that was named by the Ngarluma elders and means ‘Mangrove’, and we are very proud to feature artwork panels on the bridge that were designed and painted by Roebourne Art Group artists,” Mr Joyce said. The bridge on average is 10 metres high from the top of rail formation to top of road surface.

Home fresh Remember the days when fresh bread and milk landed on your doorstep each morning? When a healthy breakfast started with the smell of cutting into a freshly baked loaf of bread. Now BT’s Bakery is hoping to bring that old fashioned service back to life as it looks to begin bread home deliveries in Karratha. “I remember eating a slice of fresh bread with homemade jam each morning growing up,” BT’s owner Adrian Catlin said. “Many people miss the days of the bread man.”
“But if local residents tell us they want fresh bread delivered to their homes each morning, we will start the service in Karratha.” As Karratha’s only commercial bakery, BT’s supplies bread products to retailers across the Pilbara in Port Hedland, Wickham and Karratha. Now, depending on community interest, BT’s is looking to start delivering all bread products, including wholemeal, multigrain and white loaves , rolls and croissants, to Karratha residents. Ask Peter Are there any tax benefits to investing in property before the end of the financial year? – Michael Yes, absolutely, you can time the purchase to maximise your taxation outcomes. By investing before June 30, you can bring forward a host of taxation benefits and achieve a short-term cash flow boost to help out with the up-front costs. Our tips are: Know your deductions and claim immediately on a host of property management costs potentially worth thousands of dollars of tax deductible expenses Pre-pay interest on your investment loan to bring forward deductions that you would otherwise have to wait for until next year For the ultimate in efficient property investing at tax time, focus on new properties (either house and land, or a completed spec / display homes) which receive full depreciation allowance on buildings and fixtures and fittings costs. If it’s tax effectiveness you want, then buying with a self-managed super fund may be for you. They are easy to set up and can bring considerable tax-related advantages, not to mention more direct control over your super compared to a traditional retail fund. Because this is general advice, you should book a meeting with your accountant this month or early June to discuss these and other strategies.

Marketing takes the spotlight for business development series
By Brenton Reynolds
This could be a sign that the growth, at least in part, was driven by the US consumer.
There is currently no stopping US markets, they are in better touch than the Geelong Cats after another week outperforming most other indices.
Australian markets were doing their best to compete with the US and finished the week ending May 10 strongly with the ASX200 closing up 77 points (1.5%).
This week there was some genuine substance to the rally as economic data came in above expectations, which was also supported by solid corporate earnings.
The biggest surprise of the week came on Tuesday when the RBA lowered the cash rate 25 basis points to 2.75% its lowest point in more than five decades.
Stock Tip of the Week QBE Insurance Group Ltd (QBE) - ACCUMULATE QBE is one of the better managed insurance groups in the global general insurance and reinsurance industry.

Independent brand advocate, Michel Hogan, will travel to Karratha in May to present at the fifth Pilbara Business Development Series. Ms Hogan has also been announced as the keynote speaker at the popular Pilbara Women’s Network women in business luncheon this Tuesday, May 21. SBC West Pilbara manager Rachel Whiting said she was looking forward to the series of events. “We’ve participated in a number of webinars run by Michel Hogan around similar topics so we’re really excited to host her here in Karratha,” Ms Whiting said. “After presenting at the Pilbara Women’s Network lunch, Michel will present two in-depth, interactive workshops that explore the topic of brand in more details and give participants practical tools and ideas to take back to their businesses.” This first workshop, titled Brand Beyond Marketing, promises to help participants build a brand that lasts. Taking place at Welcome Lotteries House from 5pm on Tuesday, the topic will explore the role of a business brand beyond its purpose in marketing. The second workshop, titled The Myth of WOW, will take place on Wednesday, May 22 at 7:30am. Following on from the previous workshop, this topic will help businesses build loyalty and satisfaction amongst customers. “More and more businesses are entering the market every day fuelling competition,” Ms Whiting said. “Businesses need to be savvy in the way they deal with their customers to retain market share. “These workshops will provide participants with valuable and practical tools that they can implement into their business plan.” Ms Whiting explained the workshops were not exclusive to business owners. “Building and maintaining a reputation is as relevant to businesses as it is to individuals so these topics are really relevant to anyone in the

By Tamara Binamat He shot to stardom in 2011 as a finalist on TV’s X-Factor, won Dancing With The Stars in 2012 and made his acting debut at the top of Australian TV on Home and Away in 2013.
Ruffo said he first fell in love with music when by the time he was 13-years-old, when he began to learn piano and guitar. “My childhood idol was Michael Jackson, which in turn prompted me to want to learn how to dance,” he said.
Next for Johnny Ruffo is an appearance at the Wickham Community Association’s Dance Party for youths.
And if he wasn’t an entertainer, Ruffo said he would probably still be a concreter from Balcatta trying to break into the industry.
Ruffo said although television is something he always wanted to do, music is still his first love.
A dancer, actor and singer, the 25-yearold has cemented his ‘triple threat’ label and said it is something he has worked hard to achieve.
“I have always loved being able to express myself creatively through different forms of entertainment,” he said.

“I think it’s very flattering when people call you a triple threat,” Ruffo said.
“I find that television is a perfect medium to do so.
“I have worked very hard to get where I am and will continue to work hard.
“[And] the music is coming along extremely well.
“I guess I will have to think of something else to add to the resume now – maybe astronaut!”
“I’m extremely excited about the direction that my music is taking.”

From a concreter to national entertainment star, Ruffo has words of encouragement for any construction workers in our region who might fancy the arts. “If you’re really passionate about something, give it a go because you never know what’s around the corner,” he said. After touring with other teen heart throbs such as One Direction, Backstreet Boys and New Kids On The Block, Ruffo is now promoting his latest single Take It Home. Ruffo will be appearing at both Wickham Youth Events on Saturday May 25 at the Wickham Picture Gardens.

You’re invited to celebrate YOLO’s first birthday
PILBARAEVENTSCALENDAR Send your gig guide events to news@pilbaraecho.com.au SATURDAY 18 Phil Edgely LIVE at the Karratha Tavern, 9pm Circus Royale
Local event business Distorted Noize started a regular DJ event, YOLO, one year ago. And now, they’re celebrating their first birthday with a bang! Distorted Noize began the event in May last year with the concept of giving locals a good time at cheap prices. The events began with local DJs, but as the whole YOLO concept became more popular, they have been able to bring in interstate DJs to Karratha, such as Ace Basik, G-Wizard and Ministry of Sound’s Tom Piper. “YOLO is all about entertaining the locals, without it costing an arm and a leg,” Distorted Noize manager Alan Hankinson said. “[For] every event we have incorporated different themes - from a white party, Jersey party and Superhero party, just to change things up a bit and keep it fresh.” To celebrate YOLO’s first birthday this month, the YOLO team are bringing their first Ministry Tour, Electro House Sessions with special guest DJ Ember to Karratha. Regarded as one of Australia’s most in demand
party starters, Ember doesn’t just rock the spot, he owns it. No longer Sydney’s hidden gem, Ember is national news as he works his way around Australia’s most iconic party spots. Recently jumping into the studio to mix the July edition of Ministry of Sound Radio’s iconic compilation ‘On The Download’, and working his way through a handful of remixes and original productions, Ember’s journey into the production-o-sphere is blurring the lines and bridging the gap between any and all genres.

Reminder to strap in when driving By Ben Leahy Police and members of the Pilbara Industry Road Safety Alliance met with community members and handed out road safety stickers at the Karratha and South Hedland McDonald’s restaurants on May 16. The community greet was designed to remind drivers to belt up and to ensure their passengers and children were also correctly restrained at all times. “The Pilbara region has the third highest rate of seat belt non-use per 100,000 population,” Darren Varcoe, the industry representative from CITIC Pacific Mining said. “Wearing a restraint on every journey is the easiest way to save your life and protect you from serious injuries in a road crash.”

This week’s health condition in focus: How to fire up your immune system It seems that everyone around me is dropping like flies at the moment. The annual colds and flus have begun already as we approach winter. The fact is, we are constantly surrounded by bacteria - on the surfaces we touch, on our skin, entering our body via food and the oxygen we breathe. It’s a wonder we survive at all! The reason we do is thanks to the tireless efforts of our internal superstars - the immune cells. I like to think of these little guys as some kind of elite soldiers, they literally patrol the body to seek and destroy anything foreign that enters their fortress. However, if your immune cells are compromised and not running at full steam the bacteria begin to multiply and overturn the immune cells, or viruses hijack cells and trick them into reproducing more viruses, in other cells throughout the body. Where does that leave us?
Lying in bed with a cold or flu, or even worse, The Man Flu!
Top nutrients for immune support:
Whether you are suffering already, or you want to get on top of things so you don’t get struck down this year, there are some great dietary and lifestyle ways to fire up your personal artillery - your immune system.
Vitamin C
Vitamin A
Enhances function of all immune cells and also supports adrenal function. Find this in citrus fruit such as kiwifruit, peppers, parsley, broccoli, brussell sprouts, berries and kale.
Nourishes mucosal linings (throat, nasal, intestinal), which enhancing immune cell function. Find this in organ meats, cod liver oil and red meat, or in yellow/ orange/red fruit and vegetables (this form then needs to be converted, which is not as effective).
Zinc 1. Avoid sugar and anything containing sugar (except whole fruit or freshly made juice). Sugar depletes your immune system significantly for hours.
2. Increase fluids, this keeps your circulation flowing. Think of your insides without water being like a stagnant pond that has no flowing water. What happens to that pond? Bacteria grow, nothing gets in and nothing gets out. When you have a flowing stream internally nutrients can flow around freely and waste can get excreted.
3.
Increase antimicrobial foods; antimicrobial basically meaning kills bad bugs. These foods are garlic, ginger, onion and chilli. These same foods
Immune modulating. Find this in red meat, shellfish, pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Supplementation may be needed.
Quercetin Antiviral, antiinflammatory, blocks viral replication within cells. Find this in apples, citrus fruits, onion, parsley, dark berries and olive oil. also increase circulation and help clear any stuffiness and congestion.
4. Avoid caffeine and anything containing it, such as coffee, tea, energy drinks and soft drinks. The caffeine is very stimulating, this means it is depleting on your poor wee adrenal glands, which have enough to deal with waging war against bacteria!
Echinacea One study found Echinacea taken alongside vitamin C had a 85 per cent decrease in incidence of the common cold. Another study found it reduced symptom duration by 1.5 days.
5. Avoid emotional and physical stress, yes that’s right! “Sweating it out” is not an option. Not only are you spreading your germs onto everyone else at the gym or in your training group, but you are wasting your precious bug-fighting energy on the treadmill or lifting weights. This simply means the cold/flu will hang around for longer.
Level 2 - Advanced 10hr Certificate Training Deep-Tissue, trigger point, injury & sports: • A hands-on injury one-day intensive • Focus on specific soft tissue injuries • Referred pain patterns/therapeutic stretches Intensive 1 Day course - Karratha 27th May Early Bird Discounts & Concessions Available

Asian tour inspires Pilbara boys to pursue baseball dream By Ben Leahy
K 29
• Pilbara boys on Asian Tour. Photo thanks to Paul Lowicki.
Young Pilbara baseball stars Kobi Lowicki and Zane Rigby have just returned from a Little League tour playing teams in Dubai and Hong Kong. The boys toured from April 21 to May 6 as part of the Baseball WA Little League squad in what turned out to be a steep learning curve. The WA squad was split into two teams, the Bushrangers and Stingrays, and ran into strong Saudi Arabian, Dubai and Kuwaiti teams filled with young American expatriate kids, who eventually proved too strong for the Aussie kids. Despite a gallant showing in their second six-game round robin tournament in Hong Kong, the boys were again outplayed as they met one of Asia’s highest ranked junior teams. But regardless of the scoreboard,
Kobi’s dad Paul, who travelled with the team, said the boys enjoyed the trip and improved with each game as highlighted by the fact Zane won the most valuable player award for his team the Bushrangers. “Offensively and defensively the lads held up well and every time they played Hong Kong they just got better and better,” Paul said. “Both the Pilbara boys held their own and really fitted into the scheme of things. “The coaches reckon that they were probably the most confident and skillful kids they have had from the regions for some time and the icing on the cake was to see Zane get the award. “It was a real positive learning experience and I think one that has encouraged both boys to want to progress through and continue with their baseball because it has just opened up their eyes a little bit.”

Young AFL stars closer to playing in national carnival By Ben Leahy
CLUB DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP Shontay Cardew from Jumping Puddles will take participants through the basics of Forward Thinking and Strategic Planning plus Grant Writing and Funding Submissions providing information and helpful hints during the process.
The Pilbara’s best junior footballers are on track to represent the North West in the country’s premier Aussie Rules Under-16 carnival to be held in Sydney from July 7 to 14. The Pilbara football academy sent 19 local boys to a trial camp in Broome camp earlier this month with 11 making it through to the next round of selection to be held in Perth June 14 to 16. If those 11 boys are successful, they will make the North West WA team that competes in division three at the 2013 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships.
Last year, North West WA won division three in just its first year in the competition. It beat out the Flying Boomerangs all Indigenous team, a South Pacific team made up of players from Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and other island nations and a World Team with players from around the globe. For Pilbara players, the tournament is not just a chance to meet young Aussie Rules players from different countries, but an important step on the road to being drafted into the elite Australian Football League. Success in the Under-16s could see them represent Western Australia in the

I always comment on how lucky we are in the North West with such a great range of species, and the high probability of seeing fish with such abundance and good weather opportunity.
This last week has seen an amazing new world record. Accomplished angler Brett Cannon is a TV host in the USA. He and a mate called Kitt from Miami decided to target what is called a ‘Royal Slam’ and involves the catching of nine species of billfish. The extra part to this though is they wanted to do it in record time. The standing record was the nine species in 36 days. Brett started his Royal Slam in Kona, where it took him eight days to catch a spearfish. The next day he caught a pacific blue marlin, then jumped on a plane to pursue an Atlantic blue marlin. This was achieved in the Dominican Republic, along with a white marlin and an Atlantic sailfish.
So, 36 hours of travelling later, Brett was on his way out of Exmouth marina to target a black marlin. By then, it was mid afternoon and needless to say, Brett was a little jetlagged so they didn’t manage to get a marlin that day. And the next day they had one that jumped off. Pressure, pressure.

Then at 11am the following day, they tagged a black marlin to complete the Royal Slam in a record 26 days. This equates to a species of billfish every 2.88 days. Half an hour after the capture, they caught another fish for Brett’s travelling companion Kitt. This then completed Kitt’s Royal Slam as well. What an incredible effort – great to see that Exmouth

The marina and canals is always a good option when the winds are strong and swell messy. Plenty of different anglers have been getting in to the various cod, jacks, bream and trevally in this area with small baits and lures. Most fish are small and great for fun and release, with the odd fish a thumper that can be challenging to land. The first-ever Australian Junior Billfish Tournament is also on this weekend. So why not get down to the clubhouse to see and encourage these kids to enjoy the skills, team effort, scientific input and fun that comes with tagging and releasing billfish.

Nearly 700 participants took to Bulgarra in Karratha last Sunday May 5 for the Mother’s Day Classic, to support and fundraise for breast cancer research. MasterChef 2011 contestant Rachel McSweeney was a hit with the crowd – battling the wind to show everyone how to make her famous brownies. Crowds of people joined in the Zumba and Life and Soul warm ups, which got people moving very early in the morning. Highlights included a visit from NRL players Shaun Timmins and Dean Young. A 4km walk, 4km run and 8km run took participants around Bulgarra, with the start and finish line located on Bulgarra Oval East. An incredible 688 people registered for the event, up from 521 last year. “The committee worked so hard to make this event happen, the success of it is a tribute to their efforts over the last few months,” said MDC committee chairperson Rebecca Jarvis. “Seeing everyone enjoying the event with family and friends makes all the hard work worth it! “We had [around] $2,000 collected in the donation tins throughout the morning, that doesn’t include the fundraising that everyone did in the lead up to the event. “We’ll be counting the money for a few weeks yet, but I’m confident that Karratha raised more than $20,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.” Team Rio Tinto took out largest team fundraiser, and Shannon Bradley was the highest individual fundraiser collecting $3,150.
