GOING RIGHT OR MAKING A U-TURN
GOING LEFT
Today’s article is about negotiating roundabouts safely as it has been the cause of many road traffic crashes in the Pilbara. Hopefully it helps sort out any confusion as we run through three frequently asked questions by members of the public.
How do I turn right at a twolane roundabout?
How do I drive straight at a two-lane roundabout?
Approach in the right lane and signal to turn right. Give way to the right before you cross the broken white give-way-line. Enter the roundabout at a safe speed and proceed to turn right. You are required to signal left before exiting the roundabout.
Approach in the left or right lane, but the left lane is preferred. Give way to the right before crossing the broken white give-way line. Enter the roundabout at a safe speed and proceed to drive straight. You are required to signal left before exiting the roundabout.

Can I cross the white line marker in a two-lane roundabout? No. When driving through a roundabout stay in your designated lane. Give way at the give-way line when in either the left or right lane. If you miss your exit point don’t brake or turn suddenly. Continue to drive in the lane you are in and correct the mistake by turning around further down the road when it is safe to do so. Always ensure there are no obstructions on the carriage way prior to committing to turn and constantly scan the intersection. Please consider other people and other road users at all times.

It’s a sign that can free up traffic flow in the flash of one indicator. It’s a sign intended to remove “mobile road blocks. Please Mr Main Roads WA, supply some of these signs on the Dampier Highway. You do know the ones - Keep Left Unless Overtaking. The implication is to get on with overtaking and get left, not think to overtake, and then sit beside the other driver at the same speed.

and contribute to the road’s intended function. How hard can it be you ask? Based on the current patterns of use on the Dampier Highway, “very hard indeed appears to be the answer. Hence the need for main roads to purchase the signs. What signs? It’s a simple sign, with simple words. It’s a sign for those who need to turn off the road in 30kms, but not now. It’s a sign that will render “road rage all but redundant.
SPAY ON STENCILING— PATCHING—CRACK REPAIRS—GRINDING—RE-SEALING—CLEANING
The Dampier Highway between Karratha and Dampier is almost finished. Loose stones causing chipped paint and windscreens are testament to its “almostness. There are a number of signs still to be unveiled. There is, however, one sign that has not been provided. It is not waiting under covers to be exposed. You could be forgiven for thinking the signs are expensive to produce as they are a very rare commodity on nearly all dual carriageways, where they are of true value,
The Chief Instructor of the Wickham Skydivers Association said the man had a low level of experience skydiving and crash-landed on what may have been the back of a shed at the boundary of a residential area.

REFAP to deliver jobs program finding local employment while businesses battled to find skilled employers and that the new program aimed to address these issues. “Providers in these regions will help ensure local people are ready to take up local jobs,” Ms Collins said. “They will support individuals who are not working to participate to their capacity in training or activities that will contribute to their communities as well as making them more workready.” • The team at REFAP
By Ben Leahy Real Employment For Aboriginal People and My Pathways in Karratha and the Ashburton Aboriginal Corporation in Port Hedland and the Western Desert have won contracts to become service providers for a new government funded jobs program.
The Federal Government’s new $1.5bn Remote Jobs and Communities Program starts on July 1 and aims to provide a single point of contact in each region to help locals find employment and undertake work-ready training. Minister for Indigenous Employment and Economic Development Julie Collins said remote job seekers often had trouble
The program aims to make it easier to prepare job seekers for local jobs by giving businesses and communities the chance to have an input into the kinds of training and skills they want from future employees. According to Ms Collins, having one service provider in each region made it easier for this kind of two-way feedback between job seekers and community organisations.
“… employers will find that their local RJCP provider is able to get to know their needs better, and to help link them up with job seekers who have the skills and drive they are looking for,” Ms Collins said. “It will encourage and promote collaborative, community-driven, approaches to employment and participation activities.” The new RJCP will also take over the role of existing disability and Indigenous employment services in the region. Kelly Grady, the managing director of operations at REFAP, the new Karratha service providers in partnership with My Pathways, said her company had the expertise and local relationships to work with businesses and employees in the region. “REFAP is a traditionally owned business so our CEO Triscilla Holborow is traditional to the country we are operating in and with that our connection to the community is very strong,” Ms Grady said. “Between the two of us, we’ve also got 37 years in the industry that allows us to give back our experience to the community.” REFAP is now hard at work with partners My Pathways to develop operating guidelines ahead of the RJCP rollout on July 1.
EAST PILBARA SHIRE UPDATE Welcome to the heart of the Pilbara
May 2013
President’s Message Thank you for taking the time to read the East Pilbara Shire update. Please note that there have been a few changes to the Newman Airport Car Park so please keep reading this update to see how these changes will affect you if you will be using this facility. I’d also like to thank those who took part in the Community Survey for the Shire. These surveys are so important to conduct as the answers assist in creating the future path for the Shire and provide invaluable information about where we are doing a great job and where we need to improve. And congratulations to the Shire are in order for being recognised with a second Platinum Award from the Water Corporation for the Water Efficiency Management Program. I hope you enjoy the photo of the residents of Nullagine during the ANZAC Day dawn service. Lynne Craigie – Shire President
Community Survey Brings Good News This year saw the largest attendance of any previous Nullagine Anzac Day Commemorative Service in recent memory with approximately 80 people present. Nullagine residents including members of the Irrungadji Community and personnel from the mining sector took part in this year’s service and Gunfire Breakfast held at the “Lookout”.
Changes To Newman Airport Carpark – May 2013 The Shire of East Pilbara wishes to advise residents that changes to the circulation layout has been developed for Newman Airport, and will be effective this week as line marking works are completed. New signage will be installed shortly to provide clear direction to traffic. Please see attached layout map which details the traffic flow and direction for motorists entering and exiting the airport. This has been developed to improve traffic circulation, and reduce congestion within the Airport facility.

Your co-operation during implementation is appreciated. Any queries please contact Helen Taulapiu, Technical Services Administration Officer, on 9175 8000.
Resident satisfaction with the Shire of East Pilbara is continuing to improve, according to the results of the latest Community Survey. The survey found that 94% of survey respondents indicated they were satisfied with the overall performance of the Shire, compared to 88% in 2011 and 87% in 2010; and over seven out of ten survey respondents (72%) indicated that they felt the Shire of East Pilbara was either an ‘excellent’ or ‘good’ place to live, only slightly lower than 75% who indicated this in 2011. “Each year the Shire of East Pilbara conducts an extensive Community Survey to gauge community satisfaction with a range of Council services and to determine emerging issues and priorities, said Chief Executive Officer Allen Cooper. “Last year we survey 601 households and from this information we are able to target issues that are of most concern from the residents we serve,” he added.
Shire Wins Platinum The Shire of East Pilbara has been recognised with a Platinum Award from the Water Corporation’s Water Efficiency Management Plan Program.
The overwhelming majority of respondents (94%) picked Medical/Health services as one of the issues they felt was most important for the Shire to be lobbying State and Federal government to improve the provision of. The next highest were Youth services (49%) and Retail opportunities (47%).
The Platinum Award recognised more than 50 per cent improvement in water efficiency and is testimony to the Shire’s commitment to making simple changes to save water.
The survey also revealed that other areas requiring resource input include Newman Airport and assisting in establishing additional retail businesses (18%).

Aussie actor wheels into town for breast cancer research By Ben Leahy Having already ticked over 6,000kms on a unicycle, popular Australian actor Samuel Johnson says it is the support of communities like Port Hedland and Karratha that is inspiring him to tackle the 10,000kms still to come. Samuel is aiming to ride his unicycle around Australia to raise money and awareness for breast cancer after his sister Constance, who is terminally ill with the disease, put him up to the challenge. And Constance didn’t set the bar low for Samuel as part of the Love Your Sister fundraising effort. Not only is he to complete
a world record 15,000-plus kilometres on a unicycle, but she also set him the challenge of raising $1m for breast cancer research as well as meeting as many people along the way as possible. And speaking to more than 50 community members at an event organised by local breast cancer survivor Narelle Nauls in Karratha on May 23, Samuel said it is the third part of the challenge that is the most important. “It is those personal interactions that I have with people on a one on one level that keeps me inspired,” Samuel said. “I knew the stats, but until I got out there at the coal face I didn’t realise how just
about every family out there has been affected by this.” These encounters have ranged from passing truck drivers stopping to donate $50 to an encounter with a 21-year-old woman in a remote roadhouse, which led to her getting a check up and catching her breast cancer in its early stages. The reaction was just as stirring in Port Hedland. “We smashed our record for the amount raised in a community in Port Hedland and raised over eight and a half thousand dollars there,” Samuel said. In Karratha, Samuel gave an emotional talk telling how sister Constance was diagnosed with a terminal case of breast cancer at 33-years of age on the day of her son’s birthday. He urged women, especially those under 40, who make up about one quarter
of breast cancer cases to get checked as early as possible. “Just don’t wait,” he said. The message resonated with local Kelly Strange. “[He is] such an inspirational and lovely guy,” she said. “Just to get the message out there in schools and the community about cancer and early detection could save a lot of people – it did me when I had a lump removed.” Kelly said Samuel’s journey was not only helping women around the country, but would likely be bringing great support to the one woman, who started it all – sister Constance. Thanks to Samuel’s efforts, “she must be feeling all the love and strength [from] around Australia”, Kelly said.

New commercial algae farm on the cards for Karratha A new commercial algae farm near Karratha has been recommend for conditional approval by the Environmental Protection Authority. Aurora Algae submitted a proposal to develop the farm to cultivate, harvest, separate and process algae. The end products of processing algae include biodiesel for use as fuel, protein rich biomass for farmed fish and animal feed and omega 3 oils suitable for human consumption. Cultivation of algae occurs in shallow ponds, with the project including open ponds, evaporation ponds, a seawater intake pipeline, processing facilities and a desalination plant. EPA chairman, Dr Paul Vogel said the proposal was able to meet the EPA’s objectives for key environmental factors including the marine environment and groundwater quality. The proposal had
Government of Western Australia Department of Mines and Petroleum
been significantly amended to reduce impacts to the marine environment during the environmental impact assessment process. “This project was re-designed to ensure that the impacts to the environment were minimised,” Dr Vogel said. “Some of the changes included the removal of a seawater outfall for brine, which would have caused marine impacts as well as the removal of a supply pipeline to Dampier. “The proponent was responsive to the EPA’s concerns by also reducing the area to be cleared for the proposal.” Dr Vogel said the EPA had recommended approval subject to seven conditions. “The EPA has recommended that the proponent ensure regular monitoring of groundwater levels and quality to detect any changes that could be attributed to leakage
from the evaporation and algae ponds, as well as develop a contingency plan if any changes are detected,” he said. The proposal has an estimated lifespan of more than 20 years, however if the project was decommissioned for any reason, it was important for a plan to be developed one year prior to closure. “The EPA believes it is imperative that if the farm ceases to operate, that the premises are closed, decommissioned and rehabilitated in an ecologically suitable manner,” Dr Vogel said. The proposal will be subject to an Aquaculture Licence from the Department of Fisheries, which requires the proponent to prepare and implement a Marine Environmental Management Plan. The EPA’s report to the Minister for Environment is now open for a public appeal period, closing June 4, 2013.

Another week, another belting of resources. The whisper of a Chinese slowdown has taken a heavy toll on the likes of BHP, RIO, NCM. The pain doesn’t stop there either, it is now being felt through companies that service the mining industry. UGL has cut its revenue forecast along with Fleetwood and WorleyParsons all of whom have fallen between 15-30 per cent
in the last fortnight. Despite all this the ASX200 only fell 0.5 per cent for the week ending May 17, in what was a resilient showing. The biggest news of the week though came from the US Federal Reserve announcing they plan on finishing their asset purchasing program in JuneJuly. This shock announcement caused a temporary halt in the surge of US markets as investors re-assessed whether the US economy will continue to recover with out the stimulus.
Stock Tip of the Week Westfield Group (WDC) - HOLD WDC is a major global retail property group, holding interests in 105 shopping centres with the gross value of $32.4 billion and assets under management of A$64.4 billion as at December 2012. considered by income investors willing to bear moderate capital risk in the short term. Hartleys currently has a HOLD rating on Westfield with a fair valuation of $11.00. However the current investor drive to sustainable yield will likely drive the price higher from here.

Yaandina family centre secures funding boost By Ben Leahy The Yaandina Family Centre last week secured $10,000 in funding for its childcare operations as part of the State Government’s Regional Community Child Care Development Fund. Yandina chief executive officer Veronica Rodenburg said the group would use the $10,000 grant to help ensure they meet best practice standards in childcare service. “These are grants that support rural and regional childcare centres in their training and strategic development because we don’t have access to that expertise in-house normally,” Ms Rodenburg said. “So it is really about helping us to source the expertise we need to help with our documentations, our policies and procedures, our guidelines and the training of our staff to deliver best practice childcare services.”

Last Sunday March 19 the Karratha community mowed, raked and swept their way into the hearts of local couple Marion and Don Campbell. In an overwhelming display of neighbours banding together – over 40 volunteers worked on a busy bee on a seriously ill couple’s house and garden. A few days earlier Marion posted a request on a Karratha community Facebook page. The post asked if someone could help with her garden as her husband had terminal cancer. What followed was overwhelming and brought many to tears. “I wouldn’t normally ask for help but I thought somebody might give me a hand,” Marion said. “What resulted was overwhelming. “My husband and I were in tears - I’ve never seen anything like it.” Close to 200 people, from teenagers to big companies, responded to Marion’s request, with offers to help in the garden, inside the house and even from people wanting to drop off baked goods, barbecue supplies and donations of ice, food and beer. The first offer of help was from local resident Michael Browne. Michael coordinated and arranged the whole event, and Marion said she is forever grateful to him, vowing they will be life-long friends. “[The volunteers] came and made our yard absolutely beautiful, inside as well,“ Marion said. “I didn’t know there were

so many generous people in Karratha. “I want to thank everybody from the bottom of our hearts. “Michael just took over for me. How much it’s helped and took relief off my husband, he has no idea. “I’ve got no words to describe Michael other than amazing and wonderful; I’ve never met anyone like him. “Even when the time comes and I’m on my own - I don’t want to leave Karratha now.” Michael said he responded because he wanted to contribute to the community and because he sympathised with the Campbell’s situation as Michael’s mother is currently in remission from breast cancer. He initially envisioned a busy bee with some of his sports mates, but the rest of the community jumped on board, to his surprise. “I just got inundated with services and goods,” Michael said. “I was overwhelmed. There’s so many people out there willing to help out, and in a small
community, you watch your neighbour’s back.” Michael said the team made sure the trees were pruned, clutter was cleaned up, the gardens were landscaped, a pathway was made, the gardens were weeded and the lawn whipper snipped. Professional cleaners cleaned inside the house and cleaned the carpets. People dropped off pot plants, an outdoor setting and ornaments. “Don loves his shed area,” Marion said. “It’s a man thing. He can’t do much but he’ll walk out and look around it and walk back. “It gives him something to look forward to. “When you’re going through what he’s going through, hope is everything.” Michael, Marion and Don would like to thank everyone who helped, including United Party Hire, Ray White, Tambrey Tavern, Ibis Styles, McDonalds, Blanche Bar, Karratha Limousines, ChemDry and Dale Jones.

Home fresh Remember the days when fresh bread and milk landed on your doorstep each morning? When a healthy breakfast started with the smell of cutting into a freshly baked loaf of bread. Now BT’s Bakery is hoping to bring that old fashioned service back to life as it looks to begin bread home deliveries in Karratha. “I remember eating a slice of fresh bread with homemade jam each morning growing up,” BT’s owner Adrian Catlin said. “Many people miss the days of the bread man.”
“But if local residents tell us they want fresh bread delivered to their homes each morning, we will start the service in Karratha.” As Karratha’s only commercial bakery, BT’s supplies bread products to retailers across the Pilbara in Port Hedland, Wickham and Karratha. Now, depending on community interest, BT’s is looking to start delivering all bread products, including wholemeal, multigrain and white loaves, rolls and croissants, to Karratha residents. Anybody wishing to register interest in the service should email orders@btsbakery.com.au.

By Tamara Binamat Karratha Airport and the Shire of Roebourne are looking to the community and air travellers to gauge demand for international travel from Karratha. Karratha Airport conducted a survey recently asking air passengers their views on potential direct air services to overseas destinations. Development of the strategic air services plan follows
Council’s recent decision to enter the design phase of the Karratha Airport terminal upgrade. Plans include new commercial and retail opportunities, remodelled baggage claim and sorting areas and space for customs/ immigration. Shire of Roebourne CEO Chris Adams said many responses were positive and indicated a demand for more flights to the East Coast and overseas, such as
Kevin, New Zealand “It’s a great idea because the number of people coming and going from Karratha is huge. There should be direct flights to Bali, Singapore and Dubai.”

Bali, Cebu and Phuket. “It’s a great chance to look at opening up new direct markets for our community and the broader region,” he said. This week the Pilbara Echo asked residents and visitors to Karratha their thoughts on direct international flights from Karratha becoming a possibility. All responses were positive with many commenting they would like direct flights to Asia.
Amanda, Karratha “I would like to see it happen. I’d like to fly to Bali, direct flights would make it a lot cheaper.”
Rosita, Karratha “I’ve been hoping it would happen. It would attract more people to Karratha. I’d fly to Bali and New Zealand.”

$1 million in community grants distributed Community associations across the Shire of Roebourne have benefited from more than a million dollars in funding from the Annual Community Association Development and Kangaroo Hill and Birra Birra ex-gratia grant schemes. The funds will contribute to a wide variety of community projects ranging from playgrounds and skate parks to community events and public art.

Maths and science add up to success for Wickham students Aspirant Indigenous students at Wickham Primary School recently signed a deal, which will see them continue to immerse themselves in the world of maths and science. In April, 19 students in Years 4 to 7, along with their families and representatives from the Graham (Polly) Farmer Foundation and corporate partner Rio Tinto, attended a Compact Signing at the Wickham Maths and Science
Centre of Excellence. Foundation program manager Beth Crowley said the ceremony outlined the shared commitment to provide an “opportunity [for participating students] to succeed and excel in the maths and science”. The Maths and Science Centre of Excellence commenced at Wickham Primary School in 2012 as an initiative between Rio Tinto and the Graham (Polly) Farmer Foundation, with

initial funding provided by Lotterywest. “The success of these programs relies on all involved parties being committed to these students’ education, so we were especially pleased to have a great turnout of senior Rio Tinto people at the ceremony,” Beth said. Rio Tinto manager operations Cape Lambert Michael Bailey, operations support superintendent Michael Flenady and team administrator Jess Jones were on hand to talk to the kids about their aspirations and to assist with proceedings. “Michael addressed the students and highlighted the importance of studying maths and science, then went on to demonstrate an example of a fulcrum in action by balancing a metre ruler on two fingers,” Beth said. “The students took the opportunity at the ceremony to tell everyone who attended what they had been doing at the Centre, as well as show them some of the bridge constructions from plastic straws they had completed as a group project.”
Each community association is eligible for $100,000 in ACADS funding each year, with the Dampier, Wickham and Point Samson associations eligible for exgratia funds associated with camp accommodations that use their town services. Shire of Roebourne Chief Executive Officer Chris Adams said the grants enabled the community associations to deliver much needed
community based projects in their towns. “These projects are driven and delivered by the community and provide great lifestyle and liveability benefits to our towns,” Mr Adams said. “Whether they are used for community infrastructure like parks or shade, beautification and public art projects or to hold community events these funds are put towards worthy community driven projects that the Shire may not have otherwise prioritised,” he said. “I know the Dampier and Roebourne communities are both proposing skate parks for their young people which are much needed and will be well used.” Both the ACADS and ex-gratia funding schemes are available to eligible community associations annually.

Drawing lessons kick off at Karratha Family Centre Creative Karratha kids have commenced Term Two of Draw ’n’ Learn at the Karratha Family Centre, a program that teaches juniors to draw and improve their handwriting. Term Two of Draw ’n’ Learn commenced on May 14 and runs through to the first week of July, with two programs for children of different age groups. The fun-filled Drawing Lessons are for 5 to 10-year-old children, while the Fun For Li’l Fingers program is for 3 to 4-year-old children. Fun-filled Drawing Lessons help 5 to 10-year-old children draw, learn and write better through wellplanned lessons in a creative and fun-filled atmosphere. This program
motivates little ones to learn by adding drawing and colouring to its lesson plans. Fun For Li’l Fingers methods mainly focus on using lines, shapes, alphabets and other easy techniques that make learning through drawing fun for little fingers. This follows on from
Term One drawing activities in which 3 to 4-year-old children got to explore the creative world of colours, shapes and alphabets. For more information regarding Draw ‘n’ Learn programs contact Nutan Shukla on 9144 4245 or email shukla. nutan@gmail.com.

Police blitz nets a haul of offending drivers By Ben Leahy Seven driving licences were suspended and 23 charges laid in Karratha from May 16 to 18 in a busy period of policing that has Pilbara Traffic officers disappointed at the lack of respect for road laws. The suspensions and charges were part of Pilbara Traffic’s Operation Quartz 16 in which 151 cars were stopped over the Thursday, Friday and Saturday of the blitz. Officers also arrested six people during the operation with two drivers charged for failing to accompany police after a breath test and three for obstructing police. One passenger of a vehicle had to be restrained with pepper spray and was later charged with assaulting police. Sergeant Scott, the officer in charge of Pilbara Traffic, said he was alarmed at the high number of charges.
• Kids at Draw ‘n’ Learn
“I am disappointed to see so many selfish drivers showing little regard for their own safety and that of the wider community,” sergeant Scott said. “Pilbara Traffic and Karratha Police will continue to target those who obviously think they can drink drive, speed and generally disregard road laws without fear of apprehension. “They are only kidding themselves as the number caught last weekend clearly underlines.” Among other incidents over the three-day blitz, one person was charged with possessing cannabis, while two drivers were charged with driving under the influence and five others for blowing in excess of .08. There were also 63 traffic infringements issued, mostly for speeding and failing to wear a seatbelt.

Police mean machines hit the Pilbara By Ben Leahy
K 12
Sergeant Steve Scott could not have been more excited by Pilbara Traffic’s two new highway patrol commodores than if they were racing red Ferraris. Taking great care during a photo shoot with reporters on
May 22, he lined the new cars up with a loving eye so they gleamed just so in the sun’s rays. Yet unlike a new sports car, it is not the performance under the bonnet that has him so enthused but rather the hi-tech policing tools in the vehicles’ cabins. Looking like mini command centres, the cars feature large
video interfaces that allow officers to check the number plates of passing motorists and record footage of traffic stops. Pointing to the cameras, which automatically record when the lights and sirens are switched on, as one example, Sergeant Scott said: “That makes our job a lot easier and helps prosecutions in
relation to traffic matters.” The footage can also be streamed as a live feed to police headquarters in Perth. With one of the cars to be stationed in Port Hedland and one in Karratha, it is a technology boost that Sergeant Scott believes is timely. During the three-day Operation Quartz 16 last weekend, traffic police arrested six people, suspended seven licences and laid 23 charges. Sergeant Scott said he was “disappointed to see so many selfish drivers showing little regard for their own safety and that of the wider community”. And while he did not want to talk about the technology in detail, the new automatic number plate recognition system
could help catch an even greater number of offending motorists in the future. It also has a role to play in the prevention and detection of other crimes in the community, Sergeant Scott said. The cars also have enough reflective stickers and lights and sirens to run a mini disco. For Sergeant Scott that is important as it enables the community to see them actively policing the roads and it also increases safety by ensuring the cars are highly visible when conducting traffic stops. With the officers having now completed their training to master the technology in the new cars, it also means they are set to be head turners on Pilbara roads in the coming months.

Karratha scouts visit Coral Bay and the Gold Coast By Stephen Clarke
It has been a big few months for the 3rd Karratha Scouts Venturer Unit. The Venturers share an enthusiasm to learn new things, to have a good time and participate in adventurous activities and lately that has meant a lot of car washing. The car washes have helped the Venturers raise money to go to Gold Coast theme parks and travel to Coral Bay to swim with whale sharks and manta rays. They have also helped the team circumnavigate the Burrup Peninsular in canoes, navigate dense terrain on night hikes, collect mud crabs and Blue Mannas, learn how to play squash and create the Sharks of Karratha. With that in mind, the Venturers would like to thank the community for supporting their car wash fundraisers and the Karratha Post Office for allowing the group to use its car park. The group would also like to thank Rio Tinto Iron Ore for
contributing in practical ways to Scouting in Karratha. Rio Tinto repaired a storage box and restored the trailer frame that the Venturer’s canoes are transported on. The repairs were timely, as the trailer was built in the 1970s. The Venturers then inherited the canoes in the 90s from the closure of 1st Newman Scout group. These Canadian canoes, which live on the trailer, are old but still reliable and the restored trailer looks as good as new now. They consequently allowed a small group of Venturers to circumnavigate the Burrup Peninsular from Withnell Bay to Cowry Cove. The Venturers and a newly formed Rover section of the 3rd Karratha scout group participated on the expedition on a near perfect weekend in March. Rio Tinto also helped fabricate frames for easel seating used on camps and activities at the Scout Hall.
Additionally Rio Tinto assisted in a last minute plea for help in providing a bus for the Venturers to go to Coral Bay. All the scouts had an awesome time at Coral Bay, reflecting on how special it is to interact with such a unique animal and place in Western Australia. The Venturers and Rovers sections of the 3rd Karratha also have plenty to thank Helen Hall for, as she led the way in providing support and opportunities for Scout sections to be engaged in fundraising and the community. On ANZAC Day, Helen helped organise a breakfast at the Karratha morning memorial service and lunch at the RSL. The group would also like to thank Sea Ripple Village, Gap Ridge village, BT Bakery and the RSL for their support in making it a successful day. With seven months left in the year, there is still plenty to come for the Venturers and Rover Scouts as they look to keep busy for the rest of 2013.
Prizes up for grabs include a share in $22,000 in Bank Accounts from the Commonwealth Bank. Nominations close Tuesday July 23 and nomination forms are available from sponsors, by contacting the awards office on 9201 1155, nominating online at http://www.awardsaustralia.com/ RACA_wa.php or by emailing wa@ awardsaustralia.com. Finalists and winners will be presented at a gala awards presentation evening in Perth on Friday October 18. Nominees who do not make the finals but are able to attend will also be presented on stage with framed certificates in recognition of their community contribution.
Nominations are now open in the following categories: • Rinehart Development of Northern Regional WA Award • Curtin University Teaching Excellence Award • Prime Super Community of the Year Award • Horizon Power Leadership & Innovation Award • LandCorp Sustainability Award • Department of Indigenous Affairs Indigenous Service Award • CSBP Environment Award • Perth Airport Events and Tourism Award • Keystart Home Loans Primary Producer of the Year Award • Department for Communities – Community Group of the Year Award

Wildlife watch: Barn Owl
The Barn Owl (Tyto alba) is the most widely distributed species of owl, and one of the most widespread of all birds. It is also referred to as Common Barn Owl, to distinguish it from other species in the barn owl family Tytonidae. The Barn Owl is a pale, long-winged, long-legged owl with a short square tail. Generally a medium-sized owl, the Barn Owl measures about 25–50cm in overall length, with a wingspan of some 75–110cm. Tail shape is a way of distinguishing the Barn Owl from true owls when seen in flight, as are the wavering motions and the open dangling feathered legs. Its head and upper body typically vary between a light brown and light colored and dark grey feathers, especially on the forehead and back. The heart-shaped face is usually bright white, but in some subspecies it is browner. The underparts vary from white to reddish buff among the subspecies, and are either mostly unpatterned or bear a varying amount of tiny blackish-brown speckles. The iris is blackish brown, the toes, as the bill, vary in colour from pinkish to dark pinkish-grey and the talons are black. On average, within any one population males tend to be less spotted on the
underside than females. Females are also larger, as is common among owls, while males are typically about 10 per cent lighter. Nestlings are covered in white down all over, but the heart-shaped facial disk is visible soon after hatching. Contrary to popular belief, it does not hoot with such calls made by owls, like the Tawny Owl. Instead, the barn owl produces the characteristic shree scream, ear-shattering at close range. The Barn Owl is nocturnal, as is usual for owls, but often becomes active shortly before dusk and can sometimes be seen during the day when relocating from a sleeping place it does not like. It is a bird of open country such as farmland or grassland with some interspersed woodland, usually below 2,000m but occasionally as high as 3,000m in the tropics. Like most owls, the Barn Owl flies silently; tiny serrations on the leading edges of its flight feathers help to break up the flow of air over its wings, thereby reducing turbulence and the noise that accompanies it. Barn Owls hunt by flying low and slowly over an area of open ground, hovering over spots that conceal potential prey.
They may also use fence posts or other lookouts to ambush prey. A Barn Owl will eat anything it can subdue, from rodents and small invertebrates to birds weighing as much as the owl itself. Studies have shown that an individual Barn Owl may eat one or more rodents per night; a nesting pair and their young can eat more than 1,000 rodents per year. Small prey is usually torn into chunks and eaten completely with bones and all, while prey of about 100g or more (such as baby rabbits or rats) is usually dismembered and the inedible parts discarded. The Barn Owl has acute hearing, with ears placed asymmetrically for improved detection of sound position and distance, and it does not require sight to hunt. Hunting nocturnally or crepuscularly, it can target and dive down, penetrating its talons through snow, grass or brush to seize rodents with deadly accuracy. Pound for pound, Barn Owls consume more rodents—often regarded as pests by humans—than possibly any other creature. This makes the Barn Owl one of the most economically valuable wildlife animals to farmers. Farmers often find these owls more
effective than poison in keeping down rodent pests, and they can encourage Barn Owl habitation by providing nest sites. In May 2012, it was revealed that farmers in Israel and Jordan had been using barn owls, instead of pesticides, to deal with mice and rats for the previous ten years as part of a joint conservation venture called Project Barn Owl. Barn Owls can fall victim to large snakes, but their biggest threat is from humans and pets, in particular house or feral cats.

Bird watchers flock to Palm Springs Up to 20 birdwatchers camped out at Palm Springs, near Tom Price and Paraburdoo to participate in a weekend of bird watching supported by Rio Tinto. Two Perth-based Birdlife Western Australia volunteers led the group of 20 environmental professionals, parents and keen-eyed kids as young as three years old on the expedition, which sighted 39 species of Pilbara birds. These included Barking Owls, Rainbow Bee-eaters, Redcapped Robins and even an Australian Owlet Nightjar, who was watching the group from the hollow in a snappy gum that he (or she!) called home. A range of butterflies and several reptiles were also spotted during the walks. This year a specialised bat detector was deployed, which recorded 386 individual bat calls during the two nights (even despite the rain on the first night). Rio Tinto has supported these bird watching events since the first one at Karratha Station in 2006, and over the last several years these have been successfully held on other Rio Tinto pastoral stations, DSL Dampier and Port Headland operations and Paraburdoo
and Pannawonica mining operations. Organisers said these events not only provide a great weekend of camping and education for the local community, they also provide important information that is recorded and contributed to several scientific projects, including the annual international Rio Tinto Birdlife Report. This year’s tally of 39 species
is slightly lower than previously recorded at Palm Springs, but will provide more insight into the seasonal changes that occur in the Pilbara, as previous events are usually run later in the year (October and November). Rio Tinto’s next bird watching event will be in the Pannawonica area, so look out for local posters for details or contact Jeremy Comer on jeremy.comer@ riotinto.com.

Ausco wins award for Pilbara transportable home
Published by: Pilbara Newspapers Pty Ltd
Australian portable building maker Ausco Modular has won a Master Builders Excellence award in the Kimberley-Pilbara region for its two-storey home design The Millstream.

backyard space for a boat or caravan,” Mr Byrne said. “We adopt building concepts from traditional housing construction so the finished home not only looks and feels like a conventional home, but can be a permanent housing solution for both families and businesses looking to invest. “This design was created to suit Australia’s complex environments and it is ideal for the rugged environment of the Pilbara region, having been built to withstand category D region cyclonic winds for remote regions, all whilst retaining great street appeal to suit all locations.” Mr Byrne said Ausco are a relatively new entrant into the housing sector, although they have a long history of constructing transportable buildings for commercial and mining needs. The independent panel of judges from the Masters Builders Association said the design was breaking new grounds with modular construction and found it “extremely difficult” to believe the product was a transportable home. The Master BuildersBankwest Regional Building Excellence Awards are held annually in five locations throughout Western Australia, celebrating excellence in regional residential and commercial construction.
The Millstream was recognised for construction excellence in the transportable homes category at the 2013 Master Builders-Bankwest Building Excellence Awards for the Kimberley-Pilbara Region held in Broome on Saturday May 4. Ausco Modular Housing business manager, Greg Byrne said the award highlighted the growing need for homes that can be built quickly and efficiently while still providing living space and lifestyle opportunities. “The Millstream design defies transportable home stereotypes with its two-storey design (being the only one in North West WA) that can accommodate any lot size, and importantly can fully utilise the confines of a cottage lot, with enough

Understanding the Ask Peter nature of the Pilbara What is your view of the general climate for investing property markets in the Pilbara? By Ryan Crawford, Crawford Property Group
Investors can make outstanding capital gains in short periods by purchasing in a slow market and waiting six to 12 months
Property investors in Pilbara mining towns have been faced with some negative market reports in recent weeks. SQM Research reported rental vacancies in Hedland and Karratha had risen over the past 12 months, while the Pilbara Development Commission released its latest quarterly housing market update (based on data from REIWA) observing decreases in the average advertised prices for rentals and properties for sale in Hedland, Karratha and Newman. Long-term investors in these markets will have experienced several cycles over the years and will know that regular market movements and seasonal fluctuations are commonplace. Understanding these markets’ unique characteristics and how market data correlates is the key to maximizing returns and minimising risk. Property markets in these mining town markets differ significantly from capital cities.

Although there is plenty of planned government and industry investment in the Pilbara to support population growth, don’t forget the State Government is clearly on a mandate to improve housing affordability in the Pilbara. Branding advocate zones in on Pilbara Independent brand advocate Michel Hogan was the keynote speaker at the fifth Women in Business luncheon coordinated by the Small Business Centre West Pilbara and the Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Michel shared her branding advice to 120 ladies, explaining business branding and explaining what brand is. Michel has been working in brand and related areas for around 25 years. Michel’s specialty lies in small to medium business and not-for-profit organisations. Businesses in the Pilbara face unique branding challenges and benefits. “Regional areas always have their own specific interest,” Michel said. “There is a lot of small business as well as big entities [in the Pilbara].
“But the biggest issue I think businesses in this particular region face is growth. “The typical marketing-led brand approach doesn’t allow you to deal with that. “It turns into a boom bust cycle.” Michel has worked with organisations in a wide range of industries including construction, healthcare, education, manufacturing and technology. Her slogan, “Everything you know about brand is wrong” means the age-old approach of marketing-led branding is dated. Michel said standing back and looking at different approaches of building a brand can lead to a world of untapped opportunity. “Brand is the result of the promises you keep,” Michel said. “There’s so many pockets of opportunity there to gain an edge and get ahead of the competition.”
Immigration employer awareness seminar in Karratha Immigration outreach officers will visit Karratha this Wednesday May 29 to conduct an information seminar on employer-sponsored skilled migration options and to explain new laws and penalties for employing or referring people who are not allowed to work. A spokesman from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship said significant changes to the employersponsored skilled visa program were introduced on July 1, 2012. “These seminars will provide an overview of these changes, including information about SkillSelect,” the spokesman said. “SkillSelect is an online service that connects Australian employers with potential skilled migrants and streamlines the pathway to permanent residence for people already working in Australia on temporary skilled 457 visas.

They’ve sold tens of thousands of records, toured the country and won national awards. Hailing from Fitzroy Crossing, Fitzroy Xpress are taking time out from their many musical projects to headline the State of the Art Music Festival in South Hedland. To celebrate the WA Day long weekend, South Hedland will come alive on Monday June 3 as part of many free State of the Art Music Festivals around WA, with a WA Day barbecue lunch at South Hedland Town Square. With their last album earning them a National Deadly Award in 2005, Fitzroy Xpress will headline an afternoon of great live music as they launch their muchanticipated follow-up album Hard Times. The band has been together for 30 years, with the present line-up of Danny Marr on guitar and vocals, Victor Lane Marr on acoustic guitar, Waylon Marr on drums and Daron Keogh on bass for about 15 years. “The success of the band and where it’s heading means we’re getting more recognition for our work,” lead vocalist Danny said. “With the people that have come and gone in the band, we’ve all been family. “With Fitzroy being so small, you have

to really have something here to keep you focused. “The love of music has really kept me going, and getting the boys together has kept us going.” The land of the Kimberley has a significant influence of Fitzroy Xpress’ songwriting. “I guess with the amount of travelling we did and the people we meet and the country we see, that has a lot to do with writing as well.” The country rock band has worked with accomplished musicians such as Paul Kelly, recording Raining on the Rocks and performing together at festivals. At the State of the Art Festival, musiclovers can expect to hear some of Fitzroy Express’ new material, as well as their most popular songs such as Rodeo Road, Rock and Roll Star and Little Bit of Country. “[Our newest album] Hard Times is a message to younger people that if something’s happening and they can’t find their way out of it, don’t think life’s all down hill,” explained Danny. “There’s lots more outside that door. “There’s a whole world of opportunities out there. “The words of the songs say don’t dwell on the past.” “It’s about getting up and standing on your own two feet and looking forward to the future.” Supporting entertainment at the State of the Art Festival in South Hedland will come from folk facilitator Delany Delaney, indie pop/rocker and Hedland resident Hawk Brooklyn, and The Hood – a young Indigenous breakdance troupe.

THE FIRST OF THE FINAL FAREWELLS By Tamara Binamat
He’s rude, he’s crude and he feels right at home in the Pilbara! There’s been a long time between drinks for Kevin Bloody Wilson in the North West, but he’s back in the neighbourhood as part of his First of the Final Farewells tour. Hailing from Kalgoorlie, Kevin tours the world with his singing comedy show, but says West Australian humour is very unique. “I feel ultra comfortable here as well,” Wilson said. “The honesty of the outback shows we’re a totally different breed.
Tour Dates Saturday May 25 Onslow - MPC Building Tickets direct from Bruce on 08 9184 6080, mob 0407 381 008
“For me, it’s important to make sure that I still get to the outback, for no other reason that it charges my batteries.” After 25 years of Kevin Bloody Wilson, the shows cover nearly every demographic, from 18 to 85-year-olds. From doctors, to truck drivers to grannies it seems every one gets something out of a Kevin Bloody Wilson gig.
Sunday May 26 Exmouth - Truscott Memorial Club Tickets from the club on 08 9949 1246
But Wilson gets a laugh out of the show just as much as his audience.
Tuesday May 28 Port Hedland - Port Hedland Yacht Club. Tickets direct from 9173 1198 and mobile 0429 180 600
“I know what I’m going to start with and I know what I’m going to end with, but what happens in between I have no idea!”
Wednesday May 29 Karratha - Tambrey Tavern Tickets direct from the Tavern on 9144 1333 Friday May 31 Pannawonica - Pannawonica Sporting Club. Tickets from the club on 9184 1297
“Bloody oath! I never know where it’s going,” Wilson said. “I walk onto the stage and there’s no such thing as a set list or a script.

In fact, Wilson has some words of advice for all the single blokes in the Pilbara. “All the advice and tips they need from the master rooter can be found in Kev’s courting song about first dates.” This might be the last time Wilson gets up to his beloved North West region, with stops all over the Pilbara for the First of the Final Farewells tour.

Wilson’s show is described as rude, explicit and not for prudes – but there is a romantic side to Wilson, according to his wife Betty who tours with him.
Damian Callinan moonwalks back to the Pilbara Comedian Damian Callinan is moonwalking back into the hearts of audiences in the Pilbara. In Cave to the Rave – A Comedy Danceathon, Callinan leads the audience in a hilarious journey from the earthen floor of prehistoric man to the polished parquetry of modern dance. Following the huge success of his 2011 tour in The Merger, Damian is one of only a few performers to be toured through regional WA for a second time by Country Arts WA. “The demand for Damian Callinan’s new show has been huge. As soon as we confirmed he was touring, we had 14 communities book him in,” said Manager Philippa Maughan. “Damian and the crew will be on the road for a month and travel over 6,500kms just to make sure that everyone has a chance to see him in action.” Damian’s Cave to the Rave – A Comedy Danceathon will be pirouetting in Port Hedland, performing a Paso Doble with Point Samson and doing the Nutbush in Newman. Damian will take to the stage with a series of ‘highly choreographed’

Chocolate and Orange Cake This cake assists with calorie burning, is full of all natural ingredients, is super easy to make, has no sugar, butter or white flour, is full of good healthy fats and sugars. Best of all you don’t even need a mixer to make it. It isn’t brown like traditional chocolate cake because it uses raw cacao butter, but I promise you, it tastes like chocolate. www.facebook.com/angelofcuisine
Angel of Cuisine I have been working hard on my personal transformation as I hope you can see from my new pictures. This week, I thought I would share some motivation on how to get started at the beginning of the week when you have big goals in mind and you just don’t know where to begin. Monday mornings are hard enough to deal with even when you know what you’re doing. But Monday brings a brand shiny new week, it’s a day where all that was last week can fall behind and you can just take the good things forward to motivate you. You have Sunday night to get organised, and yes, you could get started tomorrow. You don’t have to get a pen and paper and write a huge plan, turn your world upside down and do every damn thing different tomorrow. In fact, don’t bother because that will not work! What you need to do is change one little thing and take one small step forward. A little step is still a step remember when man walked on the moon, one whole step was the biggest deal in the whole world, and your step forward tomorrow could be just that.
One little thing could be the start of something huge for you. It could be the change you’ve been waiting for and it could be your game changer. Why? Well because it’s always the first step you remember. You will walk a path and change hundreds of things in order to reach your goal but when people ask they will want to know - where did you start? You can start with research, or cutting a habit in half, you could start with a phone call, or a new book. They all make great game changing story starters. You have thousands of options before you tonight and all you have to do is pick one. If at this point you feel you are drowning in options and you don’t know how to pick one, the answer to that problem is to pick one. If you don’t, tomorrow you will still be drowning in all the same options. At least if you pick one, you start something. If it doesn’t work out, you can cross it off the list of options. That’s what next week is - your chance to start. Don’t waste it; you already know what wasting feels like.
Beauty and laughs help transform communities
Ingredients 6 eggs 1/2 cup raw cacao butter (melted) Juice of two oranges and milk to make liquid up to one cup Zest of two oranges 1/3 cup honey 1/2 tsp salt 1 tsp vanilla bean paste 2/3 cup coconut flour 1 tsp baking powder Heat oven to 180 degrees. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Place in non-stick cake pan or dish. Bake for 20-25 minutes. Cake is ready when lightly browned on top, springs back to the touch or skewer can be inserted and comes out clean.
Lets face it you’ve been there as many times as I’ve been there. Lets do something different next week, let’s begin your new story about how you got where you wanted to go. Please go to my Angel of Cuisine page on Facebook www.facebook. com/angelofcuisine and like it to receive updates on lots of healthy recipes, tips, workout music and tricks about how I got here.

By Tamara Binamat Last Saturday May 18 a local beauty and hair salon came alive to fundraise for Water Aid, a charity that transforms access to clean water, hygiene and sanitation in the world’s poorest communities. Nirvana Hair and Body Sanctum in Karratha held a fundraiser with a difference by putting on a day of pampering, beauty rituals, nibblies and consultations. Part proceeds of all activities were donated to Water Aid. Brooke is Nirvana’s Spa Salon Coordinator and said the event was a huge success. “Living in the desert, this is something close to our hearts, as we know how important and vital water can be in creating life and enriching it for the better,” Brooke said. “We would love to thank the town for their wonderful support and had an absolute ball on the day!” Nirvana raised $2,500 for Water Aid, and will be holding similar events in the future.

Inaugural Junior Billfish tournament a great success
“
Pilbara anglers are busy preparing their boats and rods ahead of the 2013 Billfish Shootout tag and release competition to be held in the waters in and around Nickol Bay from July 1 to 3. Late entries are still open until Monday May 27, but will attract an additional $50 fee. Hosted by the Nickol Bay Sportfishing Club and usually attracting between 50 and 70 teams, the annual shootout has become a major fishing tournament with more than $25,000 in prizes up for grabs. Event organiser Ken MacFarlane said prizes included $3,000 for the winning team and a $9,000 boat, trailer and motor package to be won by a lucky draw in which every tag from each fish caught was placed into a barrel. With plenty of junior prizes and giveaways for kids, Ken said the shootout aimed to encourage the whole family to take part. And being a tag and release tournament conducted in conjunction with the New South Wales fisheries department, which co-ordinates Australiawide research into billfish, it also promotes scientific research into the species.
This annual community event promises to be another great tournament with anglers
“
“One of our club members tagged a female black marlin in the competition two years ago and that fish was recaptured in Bali a few months ago,” Ken said. “Unfortunately, it got caught in a long line but the people from Indonesia sent the tags back with the number on it that matched up to our member.” “It helps show you the migration of the animal, and without that kind of information we don’t really know where these fish go and how they feed.” For Ken, there is also the thrill and spectacle of catching the powerful billfish. “We often get the smaller juvenile billfish, but they are still really fun to catch,” he said. “It is a very visual experience, when the fish burst out and kick up foam and do cartwheels – it is very exciting.” More information on the 2013 Billfish Tournament can be found at www.ansa. karratha.com or by emailing nickolbaysportfishingclub@yahoo. com.au.

This year, he was determined to target broadbill swordfish during the day. John did a lot of research into targeting these gladiators of the ocean and has come back with some great early results. This week, he caught a small broadbill and kept quiet about it, then his mate Peter caught one that they brought in to weigh during the billfish tournament week-end. There was a great crowd at the clubhouse for the weigh-in of this fish and it hit the scales at 42.8kg. Not many people have ever seen a broadbill swordfish and very few anglers have caught them. In fact, we believe it may be the first broadbill caught during the day in Exmouth. These fish usually are found in very deep waters and come to the surface at night to feed. However, in trials in the northern hemisphere, they have had success with fish feeding in very deep waters around canyons during the day. The fish is very strong with solid muscle through the tail, yet it has a soft mouth area, which makes it challenging to catch. The fish is exceptionally good eating, and I’m very pleased to say that after the fish was weighed, it was filleted, then everything but the guts were taken to be eaten (frame cooked up on the BBQ). In fact, in its stomach was a ribbon fish and large arrow squid. This stomach contents was actually more than what we threw away of the rest of the fish once we had finished eating it. Shore based anglers have been struggling this last week, especially with the dramatically cooler temperatures. This usually happens each year, and we expect it to pick up again soon. If you are not sure what to target and where from the shore, drop in to the store and ask one of the helpful staff what has been caught recently. All of our staff regularly fish from the shore and boats and are happy to assist with your queries.

Anglers bait their hooks for 2013 Billfish Shootout
Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report
The inaugural Australian Junior Billfish Tournament was held in Exmouth last weekend May 18 and nine teams got out to target billfish for the tag and release event. The fishing was quite slow for Exmouth standards, but for the two days with nine boats there were 24 billfish raised, 14 hooked and five tagged. Each team member was provided a tournament shirt thanks to the major sponsor Home Hardware Exmouth. Plus each junior was given a billfish lure thanks to Richter Lures. Riley Smith onboard the vessel In Deep tagged the first billfish with a sail on day one, while Jack Dandie aboard Salt Shaker tagged a black marlin later that day. Many fish were hooked, but sadly did not stay connected for other anglers. On day two, Riley caught another sailfish and his team partner Luke Thomas caught two sailfish as well, which saw team In Deep win the Champion Team Junior Section and Salt Shaker win the Champion Team Mixed section. Congratulations go to all entrants and thanks to all the volunteers, parents, sponsors and Kath Ryan, who does the radio monitoring each day. Brett Dougherty, Scott Dunning and Steve Finlay have been up here from Mandurah on a two-week fishing holiday. The trio have been getting out in their boat predominantly to target marlin and GTs. Consequently, Brett caught his first ever wahoo, plus his first golden trevally, then he caught his first marlin and then his first sailfish! Scott added mackerel to the boat tally, while Steve caught a small black marlin. All three boys have entered their fish in the monthly fishing comp and their comment to us was simply: “We love this place!” Local part time-resident over the winter John Addison has returned from Geelong for his yearly Exmouth trip with his boat. It’s a long way to tow a boat from Geelong, but he does it every year and loves the fishing Exmouth offers.

Pilbara paddlers looking for more water babies By Ben Leahy Dampier and Karratha might not be renowned for their surf breaks, but that is not stopping a new board sport from taking off on local waters. After selling stand up paddle boards at community market events earlier this year, local residents Gavin and Sally Smith held a come and try day in Dampier on May 19 to give people the chance to experience the sport. And while there are few waves to ride locally, Gavin said people can still get the thrill of being pushed along by the ocean winds and currents while experiencing a new way to be out on the water. “It is a whole heap of fun and you can go on big long paddles and surf the ocean swell, especially if there is a bit of tail wind that assists.” Gavin said. “At the moment we are going out one morning a week and, when we hit the water, it is still dark at about five o clock and we do an hour out to the tug pens and back.” “As you are paddling back, the sun is coming up – it is a great way to start the day.” With flat waters on the come and
try day, most newbies also found it easy to get started on the board. Iris Huang from Taiwan, who is working in Karratha, said that despite what some people might think, there is nothing to be afraid of when you first try paddle boarding. “You can learn how to balance by yourself and then it feels like you are walking on water – it is a lot of fun,” she said. “And if you meet sharks you can use your paddle to punch them,” she added, though we wouldn’t recommend that advice to other newcomers. With most people asking Gavin and Sally if they can have a go before they buy paddle boards through their North West Paddle Sports company, the couple said they will be holding more come and try days in the near future. But Gavin said the main objective is to get a social club going to have regular paddles and sausage sizzles as well as longer trips around the Burrup peninsula and the many islands in the regions. More information on boards, which start from $1,650, and social paddles can be found on the North West Paddle Sports Facebook page or by phoning Sally on 0419 866 206.

Karratha’s little athletes leap into a new season By Rob Krueger The Karratha Little Athletics Club kicked off its 2013 season on Friday May 17 with 98 competitors battling it out under lights in two field and three running events per age group. Little athletics is about bettering your own personal times and distances, but there were some stand out achievements for our first competition night. Jay Clarke took out top honours in
all five of her events for the U7 girls, with her feats being matched by Caitlin Walsham in the U10 girls. Ben Cusworth in the U12 Boys also stood out in the long jump as he leaped 3.77m to post the best effort of all competitors on the night. Ben Davies made an impressive debut in the U7 boys with an 11m turbo-javelin throw. The blue ribbon 100m sprint events saw three girls clock the fastest times of the night;
Kaitlin King (U13) at 14.42 sec, Leremia Desiree (U12) at 15.17 sec and Caitlin Walsham (U10) with a 15.23 sec dash. Hurdles were re-introduced into the program thanks to support from Chevron and McDonalds in the offseason, and there were plenty of smiles on the faces of the athletes as they cleared the run. There was also a fair share of spills, but each child picked themselves up and carried on over the finish line – well done to all.
2013 Teeball Season Registration Days Registrations for the 2013 Teeball season are set to take place on Saturday 8 June 2013 at Centro Karratha 10am - 2pm and Saturday 15 June 2013 at Ray White, Shapre Ave 9am - 12pm Registration fees will be $110 for anybody. Registering on these days, any registrations accepted after these days will have to pay the full fee of $120. All fees will need to be paid at the time of registrations. NO PAY NO PLAY
Funding available for regional athletes
The State Government provides the scholarships ranging from $750 to $2,250 per athlete to help offset costs for regional residents and allow them to compete in events they might otherwise be unable to attend. Pilbara athletes can also apply for additional funding up to $1,750 because they live more than 500km from Perth. The scholarships are awarded across a wide variety of sports from cricket, football, tennis, surf lifesaving, surfing and athletics, as well as to sports like underwater hockey, wood chopping, clay target shooting, roller sports and flying disc.
“It’s exciting to think one of these scholarship recipients might be our next national sporting star or a future Olympian.” Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the scholarships helped give regional athletes the same opportunities as metropolitan kids. Last year more than $252,000 was allocated to 192 athlete scholarships across 33 sports. With this year’s applications closing by July 2, call the Sport and Recreation Minister’s office on 6552 6100 or visit http://www.dsr.wa.gov.au/ country-athlete-scholarships for more information.

Karratha karate kids take on the world By Fiona Ellis Three Karratha boys have just returned from taking part in the World Karate Confederation’s world championship tournament in Melbourne on May 10. Callum Dow (11), Aussie Bloomfield (12) and Pierce Benfer (17) represented the National Karate Federation of
Australia against more than 400 international competitors travelling from as far afield as the USA, Russia and Italy. The boys train with Fiona and Ian Ellis at the Karratha Shotokan Karate Club and competed in the kumite (sparring) and kata (formal patterns) events at Melbourne’s National Netball and Hockey Centre.
Following an opening ceremony in Melbourne’s Federation Square, the tournament got underway with Aussie Bloomfield qualifying for the finals in the 12 to 13-year-old blue to black belt kata event and only just missing out on a medal. Callum and Aussie were also unfortunate not to progress to the finals of the kumite event
after both boys were eliminated by the eventual winner of their categories from a Russian federation, which consisted of 40 competitors. Pierce faced tough opposition from the USA in kata and kumite, competing against black belts from a sports academy in the USA. All three have been preparing for the event by doing extra training at Tambrey Oval, often enduring high temperatures and flies in the summer holidays and getting up early to train on the weekends. This was the first time the boys had been involved in an international event and all are determined to continue training in the hope of being selected to compete next year in Buenos Aires.
2006, they have only managed to participate once, refereeing in 2008 in Slovenia at a European championship. It is the first time in the history of the WKC that a championship has been held in Australia and Ian and Fiona were delighted to get the opportunity to show case some of their students in Melbourne. It was a great experience for the boys who learned so much from the trip and put Karratha on the international karate map. All three boys enjoyed the Melbourne experience and made lots of friends with karate students from across the globe.
The boys are already looking to start fund raising for Argentina should they be fortunate to get the opportunity to represent NKF Australia next year. Ian and Fiona have been involved with the WKC since 1998 and represented Scotland as competitors, coaches and referees. Since moving to Karratha in

The 2013 Karratha District Junior Soccer season is now under way with last weekend’s second round of matches producing plenty of thrilling goals. The Under 6s, 7s, 8s and 10s play their games either at Dampier or the Karratha Entertainment Centre oval and the 13s and 17s play at Pegs Creek Oval with away games at Dampier or Tambrey ovals. In the closest game of round two, Glory 1 played Glory 2 in the 13s competition in what was a game of two halves, with Glory 2 dominating the first half and Glory 1 the second. But in the end Glory 2’s first half effort was the difference as they won by a single goal. In the other game at Pegs Creek, Salt played well to record their first win of the season, defeating Nickol 3 by three goals. The final match saw Nickol 2 outplay Dampier to record a strong win. Congratulations to Banjo McCarthy from Nickol 2, who scored four goals in the match. In the 17s competition, Dampier were too strong for Glory and ran out comfortable winners by five goals. The KDJSA are also gearing up to hold selection trials for its 2013 representative teams. The teams will travel to Newman for the North West Competition from June 22 to 24 and to Perth for Football West’s Regional Talent Identification Week (also known as Country Week) in the October school holidays. Players competing at this
level have the opportunity to be identified to attend further development at the April State Camp in Perth and gain selection into the State Regional teams that tour Asia. Players will soon receive details from their clubs about when and where these selection trials will occur. Expressions of interest are also sought for interested parents to be coach or manager
for these teams. Unfortunately, if there are no coaches available for a particular age group, that age group will not have a representative team travel to these tournaments. Please phone KDJSA president Russell Balch on 0438 914 707 or email balchies@bigpond.com.au to lodge expressions of interest as coach or manager. Player enquiries are to be made via the respective clubs.

S 2. Live bait is also popular and can be successful if you know there are fish in the area as you cannot cover as much ground looking for fish with live bait.
