Accident a tragic warning during holiday season

• Circular Pool in Dales Gorge at Karijini National Park

pilbaraecho www.pilbaraecho.com.au

By Tamara Binamat Volunteer rescue crew and St John Ambulance were called out to Karijini National Park last weekend to respond to a Priority 1 alert. Jo Heptinstall, unit deputy manager at Tom Price SES said a 35-year-old worker from a mine site near Tom Price allegedly back-dived into Circular pool at Dales Gorge. Tom Price SES received the call for help about 1pm Sunday afternoon and was advised the man had been retrieved unconscious from the water. Because of the Priority 1 status, SES activated a cliff rescue team, calling in rescue volunteers from Newman. After a re-evaluation of the situation by ambulance crew, the status was changed and the vertical rescue was cancelled. The man’s need for medical attention was more urgent than first thought and he was carried out through the gorge instead, which takes less time than waiting for a vertical recue to be set up. “There were a number of factors that changed how they felt the patient would be best transported out of the gorge,” said Ms Heptinstall. “You have to think about whether the patient would be stable during the time of the transfer, how long that transfer is going to take and whether medical crews can get from where they are to where they

3

need to be to continue medical care. “We conscripted every able man and woman to assist with carrying this gentleman out because it was a long carry out.” The carry out took about three hours to execute and at 5pm when he was loaded into the ambulance the man was regaining consciousness. Ms Heptinstall said the man was displaying symptoms she would expect after a large fall into a small body of water. “When we were activated he was suspected of having arm, leg, spinal and head injuries and then we became concerned about internal injuries, which led to the Priority 1 status,” she said. “Once he was assessed at Tom Price Hospital that status was downgraded so he was sent to Hedland instead of Perth.” Ms Heptinstall said around 21 guests freely volunteered to help carry the man out of the gorge and a team from Marandoo Mine including a paramedic also offered their assistance. “Full credit to everyone for working so hard and being so successful,” Ms Heptinstall praised. “None of the other people involved in the rescue received an injury, and given the terrain that is quite remarkable and quite satisfying. “It’s a reminder to be careful in the gorges and make sure you have the right footwear and you don’t climb where you’re not supposed to.”

Residents inspect Dampier development plans By Ben Leahy Dampier residents have been able to have their say about draft plans to develop the town in a series of community information sessions held at Hampton Oval on June 12 and 13. Residents were able to browse

concept plans and diagrams that proposed grand infrastructure ideas, such as a future marina in the town, to smaller improvements, like building more footpaths. They were also able to chat with staff from the Shire of Roebourne and State Government

“It’s now up to the community to provide input and help inform the progress of the draft plan and implementation strategy for the town, Holt said.

Much of the delay in developing the town has been linked to the joint ownership of land and infrastructure between mining company Rio Tinto and the State Government.

LandCorp chief executive officer Ross Holt said that the sessions gave the community a chance to help shape the future growth of Dampier.

The sessions come as Dampier residents have been complaining for years about out-dated infrastructure and a decline in services, like the lack of a post office in town.

However, with smaller boats currently having nowhere to shelter during a cyclone, a number of residents questioned whether the proposed marina development would be effective in such an event. Karratha Airport set to take off as redevelopment goes ahead By Tamara Binamat The Karratha Airport redevelopment was officially launched this week, as the Shire of Roebourne enters the design phase of the terminal upgrade. The progressive plans include new commercial and retail opportunities and space for customs facilities. A major component of the redevelopment is to increase space, creating a greater level of amenity and enabling businesses the capacity to grow. The airport will see a 2,500sqm increase in floor space, helping to alleviate congestion in the terminal and a second storey will be built, where lounges will be available to airline members. The Karratha Airport is the second busiest airport in Western Australia after Perth Airport, and is still growing at 5 per cent after seeing average growth of 15 per cent per annum for the past six years. And Simon Kot, director strategic projects and infrastructure at the Shire of Roebourne, says we’re continuing to grow. “This project is not just about meeting current demand but accommodating future demand as well,” he said. The 15th busiest airport in Australia, Karratha Airport sees 870,000 passengers per year.

Most of the new facilities, such as retail outlets, will be located after the security points, a major shift in the way the terminal currently operates. The number of flights to and from Karratha will also be increased with an upgrade of gates from five to eight. With Airnorth considering increasing flights between Karratha and Broome and Virgin announcing six extra flights to Perth per week, there is continuing evidence the demand is there for even more flights. The redeveloped airport will also have the capacity to eventually accept international connections. “One of the key features of this design is that whilst we may not have international [connections] in the short term, the infrastructure enables us to operate in an international environment,” said Mr Kot. “From a Shire point of view, it further reinforces our importance and puts us on the map.” The current plans will see design completed by November this year. Construction will begin from March 2014 and take 12-18 months to complete. A new website at karrathaairport. com.au has been re-launched with current project information to keep the community updated.

Business expo to connect China and the Pilbara By Ben Leahy Big and small visions for the future of our region will be on the agenda at this October’s Pilbara Pulse Economic Summit and Karratha Business Expo, organisers say. As in past years, the Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry will invite government and business leaders to discuss the future of Karratha, ways to diversify the local economy and what impact global economics will have on the region. However, this year, local businesses will also have a greater chance to participate by renting stalls to showcase their services at the inaugural business expo. KDCCI chief executive officer John Lally said interested businesses can register now and that he hoped to finalise the event program and list of guest speakers by the end of the month. “We intend to approach speakers of the calibre of former WA Premier Richard Court, Gail Kelly [the chief executive officer] of Westpac and Kerry Stokes [who is involved] in Iron Ore Holdings,” Lally said. The summit and expo come as a slowdown in investments in the resources industry has sparked renewed calls to diversify the Pilbara’s economy and increase its ties with Asia.

As an example, Lally said that with Aurora Algae’s bio-fuel plant in Karratha set to produce feedstock for fish or cattle, it might help spur greater agricultural production in the Pilbara.

Lally said the business expo aimed to help address these issues by bringing Chinese and Pilbara companies together. He said that during his visit to the Australia China Economic and Trade Forum in Beijing in April, a number of Chinese executives expressed an interest in investing in joint ventures with Pilbara companies.

This could then be possibly exported direct to Asia through the planned Anketell multiuser port near Point Samson rather than being first trucked down to Perth, Lally said.

Lally said the KDCCI had since made good progress in following up on that interest and hoped to have a contingent of Chinese executives attend October’s summit.

However, along with the grand visions, Lally said the expo was equally focused on promoting the region’s small businesses.

The KDCCI believe

C a r o l i n e He said the KDCCI Karratha could become Rodgers from is also keen to have a small international K a r r a t h a representatives from Psychologists said the Chinese, Indian and gateway for trade she is one small Indonesian consulates business owner at the summit as well as members of the Federal Government’s keen to set up at the expo because it is a high visibility event. Austrade department. Having opened just under two-years ago, the company recently expanded to bring in another psychologist and Rodgers said the expo was a chance to connect with the region’s larger employers.

And while the focus for future Chinese-Pilbara joint ventures would be in the resources industry, there are also opportunities elsewhere, Lally said. “We are saying Karratha is the place to be because of our oil and our gas and Aurora Algae and our salt, but we also reckon we could become a small international gateway for trade,” Lally said.

t o splight

She said Karratha Psychologists provided more than just person-to-person counselling services, as it also ran mental health programs with employers across the Pilbara.

“We have had larger companies approach us to offer them employment assistance programs,” Rodgers said. “[The programs] assist a company’s employees to cope mentally with depression, anxiety and with working in the Pilbara with the long hours, isolation and living alone in a small place with restricted services. “[The expo] is a chance to get that message out there.” However, not all local businesses can afford a stall at the expo with the cheapest booth costing $4,250 plus furniture hire. Nathan Frick, who is running a start up web design business called The Shiny Ideas Company, said he didn’t have the budget to take part. “The idea of the expo and developing a stronger local business community is great,” Frick said. “However, those organisations responsible for bringing together the expo need to be more aware of the expenses of starting up a small business, especially in the Pilbara.” The KDCCI’s Lally said smaller businesses could share the cost of stalls or were welcome to contact the chamber about other ways to participate in the event. Yindjibarndi sign land access with Rio Tinto

AT M O O N R I S E C I N E M A

THE HUNT

The Yindjibarndi traditional owners and Rio Tinto are set to sign a land use agreement at a ceremony attended by the Minister for Regional Development and Lands Brendon Grylls in Roebourne on June 19.

Rio Tinto currently only operates railway lines between Tom Price and Dampier and Pannawonica and Cape Lambert on Yindjibarndi lands. However, with the company pursuing its goal to expand its iron ore output from the Pilbara to 360m tonnes per annum, the deposits it holds on Yindjibarndi lands form an important part of its future mining plans. Michael Woodley, the chief executive officer of the Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation, which negotiated on behalf of the traditional owners, welcomed the agreement. “It is a positive step forward where a mining company and a traditional owner have now come together to work

The company has one more land use agreement still in negotiation, and, if completed, the mining giant will have agreements covering all of its Pilbara operations. “We hope that other mining companies now take a more respectful approach in terms of reaching a long term, sustainable Indigenous land use agreement with the Yindjibarndi people,” YAC’s Woodley said. Fellow Pilbara miner Fortescue Metals Group has been embroiled in a bitter dispute with YAC and prior to the Federal Court decision was negotiating access to Yindjibarndi land through the rival Wirlu-murra Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation.

Based on true events, Drift is a story set on Australia’s spectacular and rugged coastline in the early 1970s. It begins in a remote coastal town with the two Kelly brothers, who spend their youth searching for the perfect wave. Battling killer waves, small town conservatism and hard-core criminals, the brothers persevere, daring to dream of a world where they can surf to live and live to surf. A story of passion and corruption, deadly addictions and fractured relationships, Drift tells a tale of courage and the will to survive at all odds.

A bus is available for pick up in Karratha at 9.00am and return

Straight talking women head to Parliament House By Tamara Binamat Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women from around Australia are in Canberra next week for “Straight Talking” with female Parliamentarians. Oxfam Australia’s fourth Straight Talk national summit, will see Karratha women Susann Beath and Natasha Hunter converge with 63 other women from around Australia to meet with women in Federal Parliament. Susann Beath, Manager Aboriginal Education at Pilbara Education Regional Office, supports schools in areas of regional education and Aboriginal issues and ensures programs are inclusive for Aboriginal people. Ms Beath said the Straight Talk program appealed to her as an opportunity to network with other women and to upskill. “Working in education, it is my philosophy that you should never stop learning and education is a life-long journey,” she said. “The Straight Talk program gives me the opportunity to continue that and learn valuable skills to go and talk to people in my community about improving the issues facing Indigenous people.”

Straight Talk participants will learn about the political system, discuss common issues of concern and generate strategies for bringing about change, before meeting with women from all sides of politics at Parliament House. “Straight Talk will give me the confidence to go and talk to politicians about issues that we are facing in our communities, to see what support is available and how we might be able to implement solutions to try and better the situation,” Ms Beath said. “[I can speak] to participants from other jurisdictions and communities to discuss the measures they are taking in their communities to combat the issues that we are currently facing.” Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin, Deputy Leader of the Opposition Julie Bishop and Greens Senator Rachel Siewert will spak to the women at a welcoming ceremony at Parliament House on June 19. The Straight Talk participants will also hear from inspiring trailblazers, including Aboriginal leader Shirley Peisley, whose campaigning was critical to the success of the 1967 referendum.

Meet the St Luke’s press St Luke’s College media students have produced an autobiographical short film being screened as part of the Art Gallery of Western Australia’s Perspectives Exhibition that is running in Perth up to June 30. Exhibition pieces were chosen from art, visual art and media works completed by Year 12 students at schools across Western Australia. The St Luke’s students impressed judges by producing their film from start to finish, scripting, filming and editing it under the supervision of media

teacher Jez Obern. The student’s undertook the project as part of the school’s Media Production and Analysis course. St Luke’s principal Thomas Kavanagh said the school was proud of the efforts of teacher Obern and the students and said understanding the way the media worked was an important life skill. “Media is without doubt one of the most important elements in everyone’s life,” Principal Kavanagh said. “Society is subjected to an

array of communication, which can alter the course of events in the world.” “The essence [of our course in media analysis] is to educate our students to clearly understand how information is made public and how to discern what is worth considering or not.” Principal Kavanagh said the Media Production and Analysis course had been growing in popularity in recent years and the school was keen to help its students produce more successful film productions in the future.

• James and Julia Dolinsek from Karratha

By Tamara Binamat A young Karratha couple will be celebrating a special date his weekend – their first wedding anniversary. But this is no ordinary love story, as James and Julia Dolinsek from Karratha met and married within three weeks of meeting on the other side of the world. James and Julia began their remarkable whirlwind romance while travelling on a Contiki US tour in late 2011. It was while in New York checking-in for their tour that James and Julia met for the first time, which would lead the pair on a life-changing adventure. Three weeks into the trip, James had popped the big question and the following week they tied the knot on their final night in Las Vegas. Julia, 26-years-old, said they were inseparable just a few days after meeting.

Remote students to explore the science of the solar system Feathers, ultra violet beads and scale model planets are just some of the items packed in Scitech’s 4WD as the group visit remote communities in the Pilbara throughout June and July. The Scitech Outreach team will drive more than 4,000km and visit 16 schools from Onslow to Kiwirkurra as part of the internationally recognised Aboriginal Education Program. Scitech’s Aboriginal Education program coordinator Amanda McKenzie said the team will split into two groups to run Earth and Space science investigations, designed to inspire scientific curiosity in Indigenous students. “Our Aboriginal Education Program aims to

provide students in regional and remote areas a unique opportunity to better understand the world around them, using interactive and fun activities,” Amanda said. In the workshops students will create patterns on sun sensitive paper using materials found outdoors, test the absorbency of different soil types, learn about the Earth’s rotation and how day and night occur, create a scale model of our Solar System and exchange stories on the origins of Aboriginal constellations. “There is no better way to demonstrate how we interact with science everyday than by allowing young people to explore it through observing, predicting and our favourite – experimenting,” Amanda said. Free professional learning workshops are also offered on this tour, allowing teachers to discover new ways of engaging students in science, both in and outside of the classroom. The Scitech teams’ itineraries include visits to Warralong Campus (Strelley Community School) on Monday June 17, Marble Bar Primary School on Tuesday 18 June and Nullagine Primary School on Wednesday 19 June. There will be two visits to Jigalong Remote Community School on Friday 21 June and Monday 24 June and Parnngurr Community School on Tuesday June 25 and Wednesday June 26. The final three school visits are to Punmu Community program on Friday 28 June, Kunawarritji Community program on Monday July 1 and the Kiwirkurra Campus on Wednesday July 3. Port Hedland housing boost

Housing Minister Bill Marmion has marked the construction of 44 new homes to help ease pressure on housing in South Hedland.

Mr Marmion visited the first stage of the Department of Housing’s Cottier Apartment development, which will initially provide 44 apartments. The Minister said the Cottier Apartment complex is expected to be completed July 2014. “The development will offer a range of housing options with the majority of apartments for sale to the general public,” he said. “This innovative housing initiative will

help ease some of the pressure on the shortage of housing in the town, with stage one delivering 44 units, made up of one, two and three-bedroom apartments. “The Cottier apartments are within easy reach of the Port and South Hedland hubs, and a range of amenities including the South Hedland Aquatic Centre and new sports complex.” Mr Marmion said the development would deliver housing suitable for a range of household types with varying needs. “The project will also support a number of affordable housing outcomes through the provision of a proportion of houses for social rental housing, National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) housing, Government Regional Officers Housing and shared home ownership

opportunities,” he said. “Overall, the development has the capacity to deliver up to 112 homes with construction of stage two providing up to an additional 32 units, and stage three, 36 units. “These future stages will be progressed subject to market conditions.” The Minister said the project demonstrated the department’s commitment to growth in the region and offered a fresh approach to community living in the Pilbara. “This project sets a new benchmark for residential development in South Hedland, delivering innovative, highquality housing to support the State Government’s target of 20,000 affordable homes by 2020,” he said.

Ask Peter Q: I am looking to purchase an investment property, and I am unsure if it is best to rent it furnished or unfurnished? What is your advice? Sarah Baynton

FOR SALE

A: Without knowing where you are planning to invest it is difficult to provide a recommendation but I suggest you make the decision based on the location of your investment property, the type of property and your target market. Fully furnished rental accommodation is generally suitable for shortterm accommodation, holiday accommodation and executive rentals, including apartments and relocations. Unfurnished properties are often more desirable for couples and families, who may already have plenty of their own belongings and are simply looking for a better property to live in. If you are investing in the Pilbara region, furnished properties are suitable investments due to the transient nature of the population and the high demand for short term and executive rentals and shared accommodation. There is also a limited number of high quality furnished rental properties on the market, so you are likely to achieve strong demand if furnished appropriately. I recommend contemporary, durable and quality furnishings. If you are looking to invest elsewhere in WA or interstate, evaluate if your target tenants are likely to require a furnished property and what it will cost you to furnish. Will you be able to recover your outlay in additional rental income? Is it worth the exercise? If you are still unsure, a knowledgeable investment specialist or experienced property manager will be able to research an area on your behalf.

Financial Markets Stock Tip of the Week Cash Converters International (CCV) – BUY

By Brenton Reynolds

CCV has released FY13 guidance for “net profit after tax (NPAT) for FY2013 to be slightly higher than the NPAT for FY2012”.

I feel like I’m beginning to sound like a broken record here, another week, another very poor performance by the ASX200. 189 points (3.84 per cent) were wiped off the index, closing Friday June 7 at 4,737 points – its lowest close since mid-January. Consumer sentiment is now at its lowest level since last year as local growth figures narrowly missed economists’ estimates, and whispers of an Australian recession in the first half of 2014 are now starting to be heard. The US market still continues to trouble me as any bad economic news is viewed in a positive light as investors hope for continuing stimulus from the Fed. This upside down, back to front sentiment is causing extreme volatility, which only further hurts consumer sentiment.

We have lowered our earnings estimates to the new guidance (we have lowered our FY13 adjusted estimate by 8 per cent), and believe the current sell-off is overdone. The UK write-off is a legacy of the early initial rollout two years ago, and we understand that loans written since November 2012 have been performing in line with predictions, which is very bullish for the UK future rollout. In Australia, when the cap on fees and charges is introduced in July, we expect an increase in volumes for CCV (albeit at lower margins) followed by industry consolidation as weaker players leave the market. Hartleys maintains its BUY recommendation with a valuation of $1.35 and a 12-month price target of $1.31.

Virgin Australia has responded to strong demand from the mining and resources industry to increase direct flights between Perth and Karratha, beginning next month. From July 1, three weekly return services will be added between Perth and Karratha. These additional weekday services will be operated by Virgin Australia’s 98-seat Embraer 190 jet aircraft as part of Virgin Australia’s regional growth strategy, which included the recent acquisition of Skywest Airlines.

The new services will depart Perth at 6.00am on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday arriving in Karratha at 8.05am. Virgin Australia regional airlines group executive, Merren McArthur said: “Karratha is one of the fastest growing mining towns in Australia and these new flights from Perth are being added in response to strong demand.” “With these additional services Virgin Australia will offer 34 flights per week between Perth and Karratha.” “Following the recent

integration of Skywest Airlines into the Virgin Australia Group, we now have a strong West Australian base and focus, which enables us to quickly identify and respond to growth opportunities in the region, particularly in the high-growth fly-in-fly-out markets.” Virgin Australia’s regional operation currently has 32 aircraft operating over 800 services per week to 41 different destinations. From the studio to the runway … Well-known for his DJ and production skills, Andy Murphy is carving a deep name in Australia’s dance music industry, but there is a lot more to this DJ than first impressions. A huge lover of fashion, Murphy combines his passion with music to squeeze a few fashion and modelling gigs onto his résumé. Signed and touring with Australia’s biggest club brand and label Onelove, Andy Murphy will be performing at Ibis Styles in Karratha on Saturday June 22. The ever-evolving DJ said his music style is always changing as he grows as an artist. “I try not to pigeon-hole myself as genres come and go,” he said. “I just try and keep [my music as] good quality house and club music, with a touch of party.” With a diverse cart of tunes up his sleeve, Murphy has performed at the biggest music festivals including Stereosonic, Future Music Festival, Summadayze, Falls Festival and Betterdays. Murphy’s first solo success with Music Master reached an impressive eighth place on the club charts while in 2009 Reach For The Lazers signed by international label Sneakerz sat at number three, concreting itself as a sure fire club anthem. “I’ve played some awesome parties in Australia like Summerdaze and Stereosonic,” Murphy said. “But what I get really excited about now is getting my own music out there. “I’m producing my own music and seeing people’s [response] to that, I think that’s my next big thing.”

By Tamara Binamat

From the studio to runway, Murphy is also rocking the fashion world. He was the face of Melbourne Fashion Week in 2012 and is an ambassador for Calibre men’s wear. “I love fashion; I think it’s such a great way for me to blend my own style in with my persona,” Murphy said. And the two creative pursuits often cross lines, as Murphy DJs at many prestigious fashion events and focuses on brand launches. “With music, I’ve always been really happy with where I’ve been at the time,” Murphy said. “I pride myself on being versatile at what I play and being able to fit into almost any situation. “With fashion – I’ve made a few mistakes! “I once dislocated my knee wearing ugg boots and I guess that goes to show you don’t wear ugg boots out whilst DJing!”

Pete Murray to headline Leisureplex’s first concert By Tamara Binamat

Laid-back surf musician Pete Murray is a household name, once selling indie records from the back of his Kombi van, he is now a 6X platinum album seller, an ARIA award nominee and has released multiple number one singles. Pete Murray will perform in Karratha Saturday June 29 to headline the much-anticipated Leisureplex opening weekend concert. Fresh off an Australian tour, Murray is taking a break from the studio and heading to our North West, where he said he is planning on taking in the lifestyle – fishing, exploring and playing music. “I find the whole west so different to the east,” said Murray. “I really look forward to getting out around there, the [region] is really cool.” Murray will perform songs from his new compendium album,

Blue Sky Blue “The Byron Sessions”, a tribute to the laid-back, chilled lifestyle of his home Byron Bay. The album is an acoustic version of Blue Sky Blue with collaborations from artists such as Ash Grunwald, Bernard Fanning and Katie Noonan. “I’d already had a couple of acoustic versions [of my songs] and I thought maybe I could do all the songs on this album with other friends,” Murray said. “It worked out really well.” Murray will be bringing a full band to perform with him at the Leisureplex, performing a mix of the old favourites and the new songs from The Byron Sessions. The concert will be hosted by music video royalty, Faustina “Fuzzy” Agolley and Murray will be supported by The Voice contestant Michael Paynter. Celebrity athletes including Nic Natanui, Leisel Jones, Damien Martin and Liz Ellis will be guests at the celebration. The festivities will include heaps of family fun with prizes, a DJ by the pool, sausage sizzles and games. Tickets to the concert are $42 for adults and $31 for concessions. More information on the opening weekend can be found at karrathaleisureplex. com.au.

NutritioN by April Butt

aprilbnutrition@gmail.com 0406 490 614

This week’s health condition in focus: Reflux or heartburn I have been very surprised to learn from my clients lately that many people are putting up with heartburn or reflux on a regular basis, and have been for a very long time. I want to drum into all of you that ‘common’ does not mean ‘normal’, and any sign or symptom that your body is giving you is showing there is some unease about. And seemingly minor signs can equate to quite a sinister future. The regular contact to the acidic stomach contents as a result of reflux actually has the ability to change the lining of the oesophagus. This is associated with an increased risk of development of cancer of this tissue. While many turn to over-thecounter antacid medications to combat the symptoms of reflux or heart burn, you must remember these are not to be used long-term. In fact, long-term use of these medications comes with some very adverse and severe side effects and risks. It is always best to get to the root cause of an illness or disorder, rather than mask the symptoms with medications. Here are my top tips to do just that: • Slippery Elm: While working on the dietary and lifestyle factors you can get relief from the burning sensation, without nasty side effects, by using this powder created from a tree bark. It has extremely therapeutic anti-inflammatory effects and also encourages the intestinal tract to excrete more mucus, as a protective mechanism from acid. It is available in some supermarkets, health food stores and online.

• Check the diet: Common causes of reflux and heartburn are alcohol, chocolate and high-fat foods. Reduce or cut these out for instant relief. If these aren’t triggers for you, I recommend keeping a daily food diary and also recording when you have an episode to distinguish what your triggers may be. Babies and toddlers that are experiencing reflux are encouraged to trial a dairy-free diet. • Adapt how you eat: Slow down when eating, take smaller bites, avoid water with meals, have smaller meals and chew more thoroughly to help reduce symptoms. As we chew we excrete saliva, this saliva helps to neutralize and clear any stomach acid that may have entered the oesophagus. • Plan to quit smoking: Smoking lowers the pressure within the oesophagus, allowing stomach acid to flow through the lower oesophageal sphincter resulting in reflux. Smoking also lowers the amount of saliva in the mouth, hindering its neutralizing effect on acidity. • Eat earlier: Allow 2-3 hours between your dinner and your bedtime, also ensuring dinner is the smallest of your three main meals. Lying down in bed with a full stomach increases the pressure on your stomach and can encourage stomach acid to reverse into the oesophagus. • Maintain a healthy weight: Weight loss has shown success in research studies for reducing the amount of reflux episodes, again due to reducing the pressure from excess weight on your stomach and oesophagus.

And with the lights on and a gentle drizzle greeting athletes for Round Three of competition, 94 competitors braved the cooler conditions to knock out an incredible 150 personal best achievements over the course of the night. Samuel Carter was

a standout in the U8s when in just one night he broke PBs in each of his events. Georgia Krueger, Jessica Giltrow, Jake Buck and Mia Warren also had a stellar night, breaking four of five of their personal bests. It was also the first night the U9s have tackled the high jump and Matthew Savage took out the honours with a successful 1m jump, while Mia Warren held the flag for the girls with a successful jump only 5cm lower. It was the first night for the triple jump and Jack Clarke showed the

way with an impressive 8.67m jump, with Kaitlin King the best of the girls travelling a distance of 6.88m. David Tate threw the turbo javelin with all his might to record the second longest throw for the U7s this year at 9.75m, and Maddie Harding took out the long jump with a season best jump of 3.5m. The Usain Bolt 100m title for the night went to Jack Clarke with a time of 14.24sec, the only competitor to break the 15sec mark on the night. Austin Bloomfield with a 15.22sec dash

and Desiree Leremia on 15.28sec recorded the next fastest times. It was the first of the club’s long distance events with the older kids competing in the 800m to round off the night. Encouraged by the younger competitors as they ran down the home straight and across the finishing line, Jack Clarke again recorded the fastest time with a 2min51sec result, followed by Keisha James at 3min13sec and Isobel Norris with a time of 3min16sec.

Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report at this time of year, especially with the returning retirees who love to target them of an early morning. Prawns are still reported to be the best bait for them, while the younger generation have been using tiny poppers in the middle of the day on light spinning outfits. Catching any fish on a popper is exciting and whiting are usually bottom feeders, so it is a fun challenge for some anglers. A few trout have been showing up among the mangrove jacks in the marina. It is a pleasant surprise for anglers who are usually not expecting such a colourful and tasty fish! The trout can be tricky to target when fishing, but they are an inquisitive creature and usually if you have something that mimics a small fish swimming in the trout’s territory, he will not resist having a snap at it. Most trout we know of being caught, have been caught on lures and jigs, while occasionally they can be on squid or a fish strip. Brett Wolf was targeting trout recently on vexed jigs with squid assist skirts, and to his surprise he caught a thumper bluebone. This species is really not known for eating jigs.

Baked and Raised in the Pilbara

By Jenni Gates Mackerel have been thick of Tantabiddi this last week, with quite a few anglers accidently catching sailfish while trolling for the mackies. Anglers have been trolling Yo zuri lures with the trebles removed and replacing them with single decoy hooks that have the hook in-line with the eye. The reason for this is because it makes a cleaner hook-up and increases the hook-up ratio with only one hook point to set instead of several with trebles. This type of hook also assists with removing the lure when releasing fish. The reason for the eye being in-line with the hook point is make the hook in-line with the lure. In previous years, we thought there were not many billfish about in the cooler months. Perhaps this was more due to the fact that not many people targeted them through this period. As more anglers get out to target them through these colder months, we are getting more results with quite interesting figures. There have been plenty of black marlin and sails off the west side this week, with one boat hooking nine billfish in the one day. On a different note, there have been plenty of whiting along the beaches in the gulf, which is expected

Pro athletes bring home field in Dampier Triathlon By Mark Smith and Ben Leahy Perth-based pro athlete Ben Lyons led home a strong field in the 31st Annual Dampier Triathlon on Sunday June 9, run this year in perfect conditions over Olympic and half Olympic distances. Lyons completed the Olympic distance 1,500m swim, 42km bike leg and 10km run in 2hrs23sec to beat home former Karratha resident Darryl Scott in second and Dan Jeffreys in third. The three front running athletes set a scorching pace with each having represented Australia in their age divisions and Lyons even wearing his Australian strip as he made his way around the Dampier course, including averaging 42kmh on the bike leg. The quality of the visiting athletes made local boy Ben Leishman’s fourth place finish, only eight minutes behind Jeffreys, even more impressive in what was the first time the club had run an Olympic distance event. For the women, Oksana Isavnina was first home in 2:34:08 with Tania Neeson in second, while Team Peinarse was the first home over the shorter half Olympic distance. Race director Mark Smith said the 36 individuals and two teams that competed on the day enjoyed the event. “All the feedback is that it is a great little course – tough but exciting,” Mark said. “It is a beautiful course down by Dampier but it is not flat – it has a tough ride with a couple of stiff hills in there but it also has that really fast section at the top where Rio Tinto resurfaced their road.” And the fierce competitive drive was not just limited to the pro athletes, with one local triathlete pushing himself so hard that after finishing he was taken to Nickol Bay Hospital to rehydrate using a drip before being released that night. The course took in a 750m triangle swim in front of the Hampton Harbour Boat Club, followed by a 6km bike lap around Dampier and a 5km lap running circuit along the Esplanade. Mark said the large number of competitors and the presence of pro athletes, who were

brought up from Perth by event sponsors Total Triathlon, boded well for the future growth of the event. “To attract that calibre of elite athlete and to watch them race with their speed and endurance is just incredible,” Mark said. “From now on we will definitely run the Olympic distance event and as the town grows and word filters around, then more people will come from around WA and interstate.” And it is not just the lure of the Dampier Triathlon that could soon be bringing more pro triathletes to the Pilbara to cycle on our roads. Mark said the stretch of road from Karratha toward Millstream is building a reputation among visiting pros as a great training ground to replicate the volcanic desert conditions of the famous bike leg in Hawaii’s annual Kona Ironman World Championships. In the meantime, however, the Dampier event concludes the local club’s summer racing series with members now preparing for the 2nd Annual Pilbara Off Road Triathlon to be held at Millstream Chichester National Park on September 15. A familiarisation orientation weekend will be held on July 27-28 and all current and new members are encouraged to attend. Long way around for the BMX riders By Sara McRobb Karratha’s BMX riders have put in their nomination to be declared the Pilbara’s most dedicated sports group after 15 local riders drove 1,600kms to Kalgoorlie to compete in Round 5 of the BMX WA Super Series on June 2. And it wasn’t just the distance that proved tough, with an icy wind in Kalgoorlie leading some riders to wear three to four layers just to keep warm. Despite the hardships, Dylan Bennetts, Jackson Tatham and Aron Sharp were standouts on the weekend with each taking home a first place victory in their age groups. Corey Davis also showed what he is made of by taking it up to the Pro Men with a fifth place finish. Corey additionally picked up fifth place in the Kal Vegas open, held a day before on the Saturday night. New to this level of BMX was young “Jump-in” Jack Glover’s constant pestering of coach Benno for new tips on how to master the six-metre high starting gate paid off as he came in fifth among the 8-year-olds.

Bailey King’s eyes also lit up when he rode down the six-metre gate for the first time, while Callum Kirkwood rode impressively in his age final and seven-year-old Dillon Kirkwood enjoyed his Sprocket class event. Brady Kirkwood, William Gethin, Tyson Tatham, Riley King and Rod Gethin rode well in their races, but not even the actual racing was enough to warm up Jo Tatham, who finished her races still wearing extra layers of clothing. The Karratha Riders as a group rode well throughout the weekend, before finishing it all off with a 1,600km drive home again. And it is a journey they will need to get used to as Kalgoorlie is due to host the State Championships this October. The Karratha riders will also take consolation from the extra experience they have gained on the Kalgoorlie track ahead of the State Championships. In the meantime, the Karratha BMX Club riders now prepare for round one of the North West BMX Championships to be held in Tom Price on June 29.

Dr Pain – mountain bikers prepare for six hour race By Ben Leahy Karratha’s mountain bikers turn ironmen in the next two weeks as preparations are in full force for Dr Baynton’s 6 Hour Remedy endurance race to be held next Saturday June 22. As the Burrup Mountain Bike’s blue ribbon event, the six-hour is both the club’s most grueling and most social and fun race of the season. Registrations are open for the event and markers have

already been placed in the Karratha hills so riders can practice the course. With a number of out of town competitors already signed up for the event, the club is encouraging as many locals as possible to get involved with most riders forming teams to complete the race that runs from 3-9pm. As preparation for the six hour, the club is also holding a shorter night race this Saturday June 15 around the course.

A fundraising litter clean up day around the course is also being held on Sunday June 16 from 8-11am. Registrations for the sixhour must be made prior to race day – for more information, follow the six-hour links on the club’s website at http://home.spin. net.au/burrupmb/. Anyone interested in sponsoring the event should contact Tristan Wood-Hill 0408 142 562.
