If you own a boat or go out on the water often this article will help you learn more about exclusion zones and the fines you could face if ignored. Exclusion zones With a significant increase in national and international projects around the North West it would be a good time to remind all skippers, old, new, recreational and commercial of ‘exclusion zones’. An exclusion zone is an area gazetted or nominated by a Port Authority or a Government body as a ‘no go’ area. The Ports of Dampier, Walcott and Port Hedland are shared by both recreational boaties and large international shipping. Under State Port Authority legislation, a continuous

50-metre restricted area exists around all Port facilities and jetties, 700 metres around the North West Shelf gas plant and Pluto gas plant facilities and 200 metres around the Bulk Liquid berth. Offshore Oil and Gas platforms have a 500-metre exclusion zone. The North West Water Police role is to ensure that exclusion zones are not breached around major infrastructure on both offshore facilities/platforms and shore based plants and ports in the Pilbara. We will also investigate any reported breaches in these areas and prosecute those that are found to have entered. Recently several recreational vessels have been fishing inside the 500-metre exclusion zones of the Offshore Oil and Gas

platforms ‘Stag’ and ‘Wandoo’, 20 nautical miles north of the Dampier Archipelago. On the spot fines for individuals range from $110 to $2,200 and for vessels registered to businesses up to four times this amount. Should the breach warrant a court appearance, maximum penalties can reach $22,000. Although these exclusion zones are for the security of our vital infrastructure, they are also for your safety and the people that work there. A commercial fishing vessel was recently charged and faced the Exmouth Magistrates Court for entering the 500-metre exclusion zone of the offshore platform ‘John Brookes’. The skipper of the vessel received a substantial fine.

Stressed FIFOs not seeking help By Tamara Binamat The largest study of its kind into the relationship between mental health and fly in, fly out roles has revealed workers are generally reluctant to use counselling services offered by employers. The study, conducted by suicide prevention agency Lifeline WA and funded by Pilbara company Raw Hire, found that stigma is the main barrier to seeking help, with the fear of appearing ‘soft’, weak or unable to cope. CEO Lifeline WA Fiona Kalaf said 924 workers responded to the online, anonymous survey, providing valuable insights into the ways workers cope with challenges. “There is a considerable focus given to the physical safety of employees, but there is a limited focus on the emotional and mental health of these workers and their immediate families,” she said. “This research has demonstrated the FIFO existence can be challenging.” Although mental health issues such as depression are not

restricted to any demographic in the mining industry, men with families are found to be especially vulnerable to the stress of a ‘split lifestyle’. Ben, a 24-year-old father and FIFO worker for one Australia’s largest mining companies works a one week on and one week off roster. He said his roster is at the forefront of everything he thinks about. “As a FIFO [worker], I kind of push family thoughts to the back [of my mind] because I have to think about flight times and do I need to take anything for work or is there something I’ve forgotten? “Personally, it takes up most of my time - you never really get a break from it.” Despite the troubles of FIFO life, Ben said his company offers a good employee assistance program with support from team leaders, and he is always in direct contact with someone he can talk to at anytime. “There’s been a few times where I’ve said I really don’t feel like being here … but then I turn around to myself and say ‘no, suck it up, everyone else is here why should you go home?’ “Some of these guys are hard men who have done hard times and for someone like me, one of the youngest on the crew, to be given that o p p o r t u n i t y, you don’t

• A study reveals FIFO workers feel most stressed as they come to the end of their days off want to let anyone down. “If these guys can power through it, why can’t I?” The Lifeline study found that during rotation, stress generally increased and was reported to be at its highest levels in the days leading up to leaving for work.” “The last time I came [back to work for] this swing, when I was at the airport my son came and saw me off, and for the first time I remember, he cried rather bad,” Ben said. “That had its affect on me and it wasn’t a good start to my working week because the first thought I had when getting on the plane was my son crying and asking me to stay. “It actually takes you away from your focus on the job and sometimes becomes a bit of a danger. “I find sometimes it’s best to just isolate myself from my phone until the end of the day and talk to [my son] then.” Despite the mental health

support available from FIFO companies, findings suggest that having the services readily available might not be enough to combat work-related stress. “All the help in the world wont solve the issue of the stress that FIFO workers have to take on, it’s very difficult,” said Ben. “Everytime you get off the plane you’ve got a sore throat and with the physical time away, living in camps and eating terrible food, no amount of help will ever take away the stresses faced by the FIFO workforce. “Personally at the moment, I’m not finding very much benefit in me doing this FIFO position.” Australian Institute of Management WA Chief Executive, Gary Martin, said the Institute would collaborate with Lifeline WA to develop a series of programs to assist managers and employees to improve the FIFO and DIDO experience.

Funding for Ningaloo research and community hub By Ben Leahy Marine scientists and Exmouth residents could begin using a proposed $30m Ningaloo research and community centre by early 2016 after the project secured $7m in Federal funding on June 17. The Ningaloo Centre is proposed as a major research facility for scientists studying the World Heritage listed Ningaloo Reef and Cape Range national parks. But it will also function as a community hub with a new visitor’s centre, library, museum, convention centre, cafĂŠ and children’s playground included in the design plans. Federal Regional Services, Local Communities and Territories Minister, Catherine King, said the project would increase awareness of the region’s environmental riches and help diversify the local economy. “This state-of-the-art centre will provide an important social, educational and research hub which will attract researchers, students and visitors to the region and provide increased learning opportunities for the Exmouth community,â€? Minister King said.

She said the project would also provide “increased employment opportunities and greater demand for local housing, goods and services. The Federal Government’s endorsement comes as community groups have been calling for a Ningaloo research centre for the past 15-years. While the Great Barrier Reef is home to a network of coral reef research centres, there are currently no facilities between Perth and Darwin supporting marine research. “Obviously, there is millions of dollars spent on research on the Ningaloo Reef, but researchers haven’t got a facility to undertake that research and it restricts a lot of what they can do in terms of taking samples and so on, Shire of Exmouth chief executive officer Bill Price said. Price said the new Ningaloo Centre aimed to fulfil four aims. It would boost scientific research with new wet and dry laboratories, aquaria, classrooms and other facilities to be shared by an alliance of research bodies, ranging from the University of Western Australia to the CSIRO. It would promote culture by including a new museum and

gallery space to help tell stories of the Indigenous, American, oil and gas and environmental histories of the Exmouth Gulf. Its new convention centre, library, indoor playground and six office spaces for community groups would act as an upgrade to existing Shire buildings, many of which date back 50-years to the American era. And it would also aim to boost tourism with hopes that even more people would be attracted to its proposed visitor’s centre than the 120-150,000 that currently visit the existing centre. Price said the expectation was to now complete the Ningaloo Centre by 2016 with the Shire hopeful of quickly securing full funding for the $30m project. He said the $7m Federal grant awarded as part of the Regional Development Australia Fund comes on top of a notional commitment by the Gascoyne Development Commission to contribute $20m to the project.

fully financed, the Shire will commission M a t e r a Construction and Site Architecture to prepare design drawings with construction hoped to begin in the second half of 2014.

The Shire is also in “positive discussions with funding bodies, such as LotteryWest, for the remaining funds.

Shire of Roebourne councillors have granted planning approval for a transient workers accommodation camp on the Point Samson-Roebourne Road that they previously rejected at a February council meeting. The application by Roebourne mine services and engineering company WA Site Services complied with planning laws when it was submitted in February. Other TWA camps had also previously been approved in the Mixed Business zone in Roebourne. However, councillors at the time chose to set a precedent in rejecting WA Site Services’ application because past TWA camps had been designed to house construction workers, not operational employees. Councillors said their decision met with Karratha City of the North Plan recommendations that operational workers be encouraged to live in towns, while construction workers should stay in camps only when alternative

The City of the North Plan seeks to house permanent workers in towns to improve infrastructure and services and create a stronger sense of community across the Shire. However, WA Site Services appealed the Shire’s decision to the State Administrative Tribunal, which subsequently recommended that councillors reverse their decision and approve the TWA. WA Site Services argued that there was no requirement in planning laws that occupants of a TWA be construction workers. It also said that the number of workers in the camp would vary according to demand at surrounding mine sites, making it difficult to “accommodate up to 30 casual FIFO operational workers in town-based accommodation”. Despite the reversal in council’s decision, the policy governing TWA camps is currently being revised as the Shire seeks to build more permanent residential populations across the region.

If you have an artistic bent and believe in the idea that one person’s trash is another’s treasure then you could be the next prize-winning artist in the 2013 Consumed Recycled Art Competition. The competition aims to encourage Shire of Roebourne residents to rethink how they dispose of household waste by redesigning it into two or threedimensional recycled artworks. Finalists in the competition will have their pieces exhibited at the Red Earth Arts Festival in September. Last year’s inaugural competition received 34 entries with the Best Overall Artwork winner Liv Levinson creating a beautiful glass slipper made from beach glass and old necklaces. Another prize winner Marianne Gathmann created a tree sculpture using a bucket, old newspaper, polystyrene and work boots that symbolised how people leave an imprint on the country through the waste they discard. As well as accepting entries to its Consumed art competition, the Karratha

Community Association’s Community Garden group will be holding a recycling forum on June 26 at 5:30pm that will discuss ways to introduce formal and informal recycling measures to the Shire of Roebourne. Other recent activities by the group include painting a mural on a sea container at the garden site and submitting a winning entry into a Statewide banner competition. The annual Banners in the Terrace Competition involves each shire and council in Western Australia selecting a winning banner from their region, which is then displayed in St George’s Terrace in Perth each August. Monique Ulani created the community garden’s design with other members pitching in to help paint the banner that will now be displayed in Perth and vie for the title of best banner in the State. The community garden’s entry has a tough act to follow, however, after the Karratha Senior High School’s banner won the overall award in Perth in 2012. Pilbara health services boosted by FIFO doctors The number of general practitioners in rural and remote Western Australia has increased for the first time in five years, largely because of fly in, fly out doctors and doctors in training. The number of regional doctors is up six

per cent, and the greatest increase in the number of doctors between 2011 and 2012 was in the Pilbara and Kimberley regions. A Rural Health West survey revealed around 43 per cent of GPs work in remote and very remote locations.

Ms Belinda Bailey, Rural Health West CEO said the 2012 survey returned some promising data. “This indicates that interest in and experience of rural practice is increasing with each graduating medical class,” Ms Bailey said. “Rural Health West conducts an annual general practitioner survey which is detailed and wide-ranging as well as a bi-annual survey of the practices and their activity.” Although there has been reported public upset regarding everchanging doctors in the region, turnover is now down two per cent.

By Ben Leahy Hedland Place is the latest part of the Karratha central business district to be set for a city-style makeover with the Shire giving planning approval to two multi-storey developments at its June Council meeting. The first development will involve the demolition of a single storey building close to the Shell Petrol Station and the construction in its place of a three-storey block. Under current plans, Scope Business Imaging would occupy the new building that includes a ground floor showroom and car park, office spaces on the first floor and apartments on the top floor. The second separate development, a few buildings down along Hedland Place, would be a five-storey block offering business and residential tenancies. This would include two commercial spaces on the ground floor with 24 one and two bedroom apartments to be constructed on the four upper floors. As compensation for allowing the development to reach five-storeys in height,

the landowner will be required to upgrade and maintain the northern footpath adjacent to the property by installing lighting and seating and landscaping the area. The new developments give hope to Karratha businesses that a reduction in commercial rental prices could be on the horizon as more office spaces become available. Finbar’s Pelago East block and Mirvac’s $100m The Quarter project are already seeking tenants for their under construction CBD developments with the Pelago West block also seemingly

still having vacant commercial spaces despite the project being completed last year. Mirvac WA development director for apartments and commercial, Dean Mudford, said he expected The Quarter to attract interest from a range of businesses and services. Mudford said the “mixeduse precinct … will equally meet the needs of resource sector companies and services, investors and small business operators looking to get a foothold in Karratha’s new and reinvigorated commercial landscape”.

Yindjibarndi and Rio Tinto agree on terms for land use By Ben Leahy The Yindjibarndi traditional owners have signed a land use agreement with mining giant Rio Tinto as part of a festive ceremony, featuring popular elder Tootsie Daniels, in Roebourne on June 19. The agreement allows the traditional owners to work with Rio to manage the miner’s impact on cultural heritage sites throughout the 13,000 square kilometres of Yindjibarndi country between Tom Price and Karratha. It also includes an unspecified amount of compensation money and a commitment by Rio Tinto to create training, employment and business opportunities for Yindjibarndi people for the duration of its operations in the area. Clayton Walker, who heads Rio Tinto’s Pilbara supply chain, said that, in return, the agreement ensures Rio has the support of the local people as it looks to operate in the area for the next 100-years. “This allows … us certainty into how we are going to manage our operations and it gives the Yindjibarndi people certainty on how we will go about doing those things and it helps both of us prepare for the future,” Walker said. Yindjinbarndi Aboriginal Corporation chief executive officer Michael Woodley said the agreement was the start of an exciting 100-year journey with Rio that would benefit his people for decades to come. The agreement is also significant as a vote of confidence in Woodley’s YAC, following its high profile dispute with fellow miner Fortescue Metals Group. FMG had preferred to negotiate access to Yindjibarndi lands through the rival Wirlu-murra Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation.

However, these efforts were stymied after a Federal Court decision in February determined that YAC were the official body to negotiate land use agreements on behalf of the Yindjibarndi Native Title holders. Despite this, WMYAC said in a recent press release that its members were unhappy with the level of consultation that preceded the deal between Rio Tinto and the Yindjibarndi people. “We are concerned only a very small number of native title holders appeared to have knowledge of the agreement,” the WYMAC statement said.

This agreement allows Rio certainty in how we are going to manage our operations and it gives the Yindjibarndi people certainty in how we will do those things.

as you would like or as quick but what it does do is allow you to both be very happy with what you end up.” Walker said Rio can now look forward with confidence to expanding its operations in Yindjibarndi lands, which include railway lines connecting Tom Price and Dampier and Pannawonica and Cape Lambert and future mine sites. Woodley said YAC’s focus will be on a three-year plan to deliver improvements in housing, education and commercial opportunities for Yindjibarndi people. The signing ceremony on June 19 took on a festive atmosphere with high profile guests, including Minister for Regional Development and Lands Brendon Grylls, a sausage sizzle and a musical performance by Tootsie Daniels and band.

But Woodley said his team had done everything in their power “to make sure that the information was available to those members who continue to have concerns”. “All I can say is that we are disappointed and hopefully once these things start moving, it will then draw those people back and they can see for themselves that this can work,” Woodley said. Rio’s Walker backed the negotiation process with YAC and other traditional owners. “If you sit down talk to your partners, listen to their concerns weighed up against our own you can come to an agreement,” Walker said. “It doesn’t always happen as fast

Passion of the Pilbara Festival By Tamara Binamat The Passion of the Pilbara festival returned to the Onslow community again last weekend as families were all treated to market stalls, amusement rides, celebrity chefs, African drumming, live music and fireworks at the Onslow Community Garden. The Shire of Ashburton event is a community festival that started in 2010 with

the opening of the Onslow Community Garden. The event was so successful it ran again in 2011 and will be held every second year. Sophie Jane and the Chilly Bin Boys headlined the concert, which also featured children’s entertainment group, The Kelly Gang and Akwaaba African drumming and dancing group. Peta Hayto, Shire of Ashburton Manager of

Community Services, said the entire weekend was a great success. “The main focus of the Passion of the Pilbara Festival was on promoting healthy lifestyles and increasing Onslow’s sense of community,” she said. “The festival was successful in bringing everyone together to appreciate this amazing place we call the Pilbara!”

Painters get busy ahead of Cossack Art Awards By Ben Leahy Local painters have been enjoying the lead-up to the 2013 Cossack Art Awards with a series of workshops held in Dampier, Wickham and Karratha over the past few weekends. Local art teacher Tanya Montgomery ran the Prepare for Cossack workshops as a lead-in event ahead of the close of entries to the 2013 edition of the popular awards on Monday June 17. Jen Hourquebie from local group Archipelago Arts said the turnout for the initial workshops had been so good they had to add an extra one in on June 15. “The feedback from the workshops … has been terrific, with participants really enjoying the opportunity to express their creativity and get messy with paint,” Jen said. “We live in such a beautiful place and the landscape really inspires

some stunning artworks.” In the workshops, teacher Tanya Montgomery talked about Australian and International expressionist painters and techniques used to capture the light and textures of the Pilbara landscape. This included a study in the colours and tones of the Pilbara, from the blues of its sky to the apricot look of its red dirt. Tanya’s workshops will be followed up by more pre-Cossack events. These include the Judges Floor Talk event and more workshops with Cossack artist in residence Caspar Fairhall, who won the Best Overall Artwork prize at last year’s awards. The Cossack Art Award Exhibition kicks off with the free Cossack Family Day on Sunday July 21 with the exhibition open daily until Sunday August 11. Making tax time a little less taxing. Zollo & Co Pty Ltd is a pro-active accountancy firm which works closely with its clients to provide expert and responsive taxation and business advice. Dario Zollo, the principal of the firm, will be visiting Karratha in early August, and will be available for consultation during that time. fast approaching, organisations need to start looking at ways to minimise tax liabilities. RSM Bird Cameron, one of the largest mid-tier accounting firms in Australia, offers seven tips that business owners in Karratha should consider. Keiran Sullivan, Principal, RSM Bird Cameron, said, “While business owners should have strategies in place all year round to reduce tax liabilities, 30 June presents some additional opportunities and is a critical deadline for minimising tax for the financial year.”

TIP #1 - Superannuation

The minimum super business owners must pay is 9 per cent of each eligible employee’s ‘ordinary time earnings’. Payments must be made at least four times a year by 28 days after the end of each quarter, including the quarter ending June 30, 2013. Business owners can generally claim a tax deduction for super contributions that are paid on time. However, super is one contribution that can’t be claimed until it is paid. This means business owners need to pay the contribution before June 30 to claim it in the 2013 year. Given this year June 30 falls on a Sunday payment would need to be made well before June 30.

TIP #2 - Personal super.

Like employee super, business owners also need to pay their personal super contributions prior to June 30 to get a deduction.

TIP #3 - Bad debts.

K 12

These should be written off prior to June 30 to be eligible for a deduction. Business owners should go through their debtors list and write off anything that is not collectible.

o

13

presents

Time 2013 TIP #4 - Stocktake.

A June 30 stocktake is required to determine the correct value of closing inventory and find any obsolete or damaged stock. Business owners can choose to value the stock at cost, replacement or market sale price depending on what is lower. This means that stock that is obsolete or damaged can be written off or reduced in value for tax purposes and claimed as a deduction.

TIP #5 - Bring forward expenses.

Do some forward planning and look at expenditure for the next few months. There may be some expenses that will be incurred but would be better brought forward. Consider items like training, repairs and maintenance or prepaying some interest. The $6,500 instant asset write off commenced in the

2012/13 year, so businesses may consider bringing forward any capital expenditure of less than $6,500 to receive the automatic deduction.

TIP #6 Shareholder loans.

Keep an eye out for week two of Tax Time 2013 in the Pilbara Echo.

Make sure that loans are set up properly or repaid by the end of the financial year. Otherwise, business owners could end up with a deemed dividend and some unexpected tax.

TIP #7 Trust distributions. If operating a trust, make sure the trustee decides how the profit will be distributed prior to June 30. This decision should be recorded and signed off before the end of the financial year.

As we head into the winter months we can expect a few days of wild winds and heavy rain in Western Australia, particularly across metropolitan Perth. This can cause significant storm damage to property, fencing and mature trees. In many instances this will raise issues for people who are renting their home and possibly also with buyers who are in the middle of the contract process when damage occurs. Where does the law stand on these matters? What are your rights and responsibilities depending on whether you are a seller, buyer, tenant or owner of an investment property? In the rental housing system, if a property is storm damaged then the owner is expected to see to repairs as quickly as reasonably possible. Where it’s more serious, for example if a home is destroyed, rendered uninhabitable or ceases to be lawfully usable as a residence, then Section 69 of the Residential Tenancies Act becomes relevant. In this situation the rent will

abate and the owner or tenant may give notice of termination of the lease agreement. The land owner may give notice of not less than seven days and the tenant may give notice of not less than two days. If a property is under contact for sale, then Clause 8 of the Joint Form of General Conditions relating to ‘Risk’ is relevant, when improvements to the land are destroyed or partially damaged prior to settlement. If a property for sale is in a recently storm-effected area, then it would be usual for the listing agency to contact the seller to see if the property had suffered any damage. If the residence is made substantially uninhabitable or any other building or improvement is made substantially unusable for the current use as at the contract date, then the seller under clause 8.3 needs to immediately give notice to the buyer. In this situation the agent should refer the seller to a legal practitioner for an interpretation of their rights and obligations.

If a property has suffered only minor damage, then the seller should be reminded of the representation made under clause 9.1(e) of the Joint Form of General Conditions, namely that the property at settlement will be in the same state and condition that it was in immediately prior

to the contract date. Where a dividing fence has been damaged or blown down during the contract period, then the owner, in co-operation with the neighbour, is required to repair or replace the fence to a satisfactory standard within reasonable time.

There is no impost on the buyer. To learn more about the rights and responsibilities attached to dividing fences please contact your local council or the consumer affairs section of the Department of Commerce. Source: REIWA

Q: Interest rates are the lowest I have seen them in the last 50 years and it seems a great time to invest. But what happens if they jump back up again? John, Karratha A: You are right, John. Interest rates are currently at the lowest they have been since 1959, providing favourable lending conditions for homebuyers and investors. Interest rate rises are a tool used by the government to control inflation. And although it is not widely predicted that interest rates will jump significantly anytime soon, you should have a sound financial strategy in place for the complete lifetime of your investment. This includes ensuring you have an adequate buffer to allow for any interest rate rises or you may wish to consider the option of a fixed rate loan which will lock in your rate from anywhere between one and five years. There are plenty of different loan types you can consider and

an experienced lender or advisor will be able to recommend the most appropriate loan for your circumstances. Also keep in mind that rents typically rise over time, providing added cash flow as your property investment matures. So if interest rates rise and your repayments increase, hopefully it will be offset by an increase in income (although it’s not guaranteed). There is no reason why you can’t take advantage of the current low interest rates. Just be cautious and allow yourself plenty of breathing space to accommodate any future rate rises. The last thing you want to do it place yourself under mortgage stress, particularly if you are nearing retirement age.

Pilbara Girls The chance to wear the Pilbara Girl crown has rolled around again, with entries now open for Pilbara Girl 2013. Running off the success of the long-running Kimberley Girl program and last year’s Pilbara Girl, Goolarri Media Enterprises is again bringing the event to the Pilbara. Indigenous women aged between 16 and 25-years-old who live in the region are encouraged to apply. The Pilbara Girl program consists of five days of workshops focusing on professional development, grooming and deportment, culminating in a showcase event based on a fashion parade format. Winners from each heat will then go on to further workshops and the opportunity to be involved in the final, where Pilbara Girl 2013 will be crowned. Heats will be held in Port Hedland and Roebourne, with the finals to be held in Karratha, however entry is open for any Indigenous woman based in the Pilbara. Kira Fong, chief operations officer at Goolarri Media Enterprises and former model, said Pilbara Girl is about leadership. “It is about giving young women the tools to

realise their potential, to empower them in their endeavours, to give them the confidence to dream big and reach for the stars,” she said. In 2012, the program had nearly 20 participants from the Pilbara region. Lisa-Marie Rodd from Karratha took out the Pilbara Girl title. “I enjoyed everything about Pilbara Girl, it has definitely built my confidence and self esteem,” Lisa-Marie said. “It’s such a great opportunity to experience in life, if I could I would do it again. “I think it doesn’t matter who you are or what you look like, if you are a Pilbara Girl, then give it a go.” Heats will be held in Port Hedland from Monday 15 to Friday 19 July and in Roebourne from Monday 22 to Friday July 26. The finals will be held in Karratha from Monday July 29 to Friday August 2, 2013.

With new original songs, this versatile trio have been rocking out every venue. Front man Peter Ashton has played guitar and sang with many cover and original bands at events such as the Australian Tennis Open and at venues such

as Crown Casino. Peter describes Parker Avenue as an upbeat rock band, putting their own spin on almost any artist. The band covers hundreds of artists, and you could hear anything from Newton Faulkner to Nirvana, Black Keys to Blink 182 and Rihanna to Red Hot Chilli Peppers. They even throw in originals such The Happy Song, Searching and New Mission. The three-piece act has a unique twist on the music they play, incorporating keyboard or

synth lines into the lead guitar. “It kind of ‘rockifies’ everything but not to the point where it’s unrecognizable to the original,” Peter said. The audience in the Pilbara can expect a gig that pleases almost everyone in the crowd at some point. “The idea of everything we do is to get people dancing or moshing or whatever they want,” Peter said. Parker Avenue will be performing at the Karratha Tavern tonight, Saturday June 22 and tomorrow, Sunday June 23.

Reality TV show The Voice has just wrapped up, and although 18-year-old Harrison Craig won the competition, top 16 contestant Michael Paynter won his own personal journey of having a platform to release his own debut album.

K 20

A star before The Voice, Paynter had released his own platinumselling single Love the Fall with The Veronicas, toured with huge names such as Seal, Miley Cyrus and John Farnham and was signed with Sony, a deal that fell through at the 11th hour. Paynter said the The Voice was a shot to finally get his album into music-lovers collections – a move that is paying off. Paynter is now preparing for a tour with legendary Australian band Icehouse, but before that, he will be supporting Pete Murray at the opening of Karratha’s new entertainment centre, The Leisureplex. “I’ve had many ups and downs,” said Paynter. “I’ve been working at this a long time and I continue to keep soldiering on. “At the core of what I do I’m a pop singer and I think in this country it’s very hard to release pop music and in the changing atmosphere of today it’s hard to do it without the help of some kind of TV show.” Paynter describes his time on The Voice as incredible and unexpected. “It’s really allowed me to start the ball rolling with getting my album out,” Paynter said. “I’m going to be touring the country until the end of the year and [the experience] is something I’m really glad I did.” Paynter wrote all the songs on his album, which will be released toward the end of 2013 and said the music is an album of really great pop-rock music.

He said music is something he always wanted to do and learnt from a young age the art of guitar, keyboard, drums and singing. But interestingly Paynter also studied law for a year and a half. “That was a very weird year and a half of my life,” Paynter laughed. “No, actually I really enjoyed it, but I actually got the opportunity to tour Australia with Jesse McCartney who sang Beautiful Soul. “So it was either that or continue my studies with law and that’s where my first taste of touring and performing really came from. “It was a pretty easy decision!” The decision has seen an emergence of talents from the 27-yearold, who is also the music director for the Veronicas and runs a songwriting and production company out of his home studio. Paynter will perform at the Leisureplex grand opening on Saturday June 29 with Peter Murray, and will be singing his songs from his old album, his yet-to-be-released album, and of course, songs he performed on The Voice. “It’s going to be a really fun gig,” Paynter said. “I’m really looking forward to coming up that way.”

Go nuts on your healthy eating program Healthy snacks can be one of the hardest things to get right when you are trying to lose weight. It’s easy to get lost amongst all the fat-free and light slogans on bars and snacks and then not lose the weight because they are packed with sugars, additives and general rubbish. Read the label, if you don’t recognise the ingredients then your body wont either. In the world of healthy snacking nuts lead the way, but which ones? Here’s a quick breakdown of some popular nuts and why you

want to add them to your healthy eating program: Brazil nut – a heavyweight of the nut world, brazil nuts are loaded with selenium, magnesium and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Macadamias – they taste so creamy and delicious and are perfect to throw into your banana smoothie. They are the fattest of all nuts, but full of good fats. You can easily overindulge on them so chop and sprinkle or keep it to just a few. Hazelnuts – packed with fibre, vitamins, minerals and healthy fats, they help

improve brain function. Peanuts – technically not a nut but a member of the bean family, they are high in protein, monounsaturated fats and the antioxidant resveratrol. Almonds – just 28 grams of almonds provide 9 per cent of your required daily intake of calcium and 27 per cent of your magnesium. So if don’t like milk or feeling sore after a workout, grab some almonds. Walnuts – high in omega 3, they go perfectly on your cheese platter as a treat, in salad with crunchy pear or chopped up on top of a banana.

Cashew – another creamy delight and a very popular nut, cashews pack a big punch containing more iron per gram than a piece of steak. Pistachios – great for your heart, they are claimed to be the ‘nut that helps you eat less’. If you eat them from the shell, studies have shown that the visual cue of removing them from the shell and eating can help you consume up to 41 per cent less calories. Big nutrition does come in little packages so check out some different types of nuts this week and give your body a treat.

pilbaraechomums & bubs please send your photos to mel@pilbaraecho.com.au

Be careful to weigh them out to the quantities per serve indicated on the back of the pack and throw them in your bag or lunchbox to help keep you full of energy throughout the day. Have a healthy week!

Cake mixture • 125g self raising flour • 125g perfect sweet xylitol (plant based sugar substitute available from health food store) • 125g organic biodynamic plain yoghurt • 2 egg whites • Seeds from one vanilla bean Put all ingredients in bowl and beat with mixer until combined well and mixture has bubbles on the surface. Separate into 10 patty pans and bake at 180 degrees for about 10 minutes. Cakes are ready when they are light brown on top and spring back up when pressed. Icing mixture • 50g xylitol (blitzed until powder form) • 2 tsp skim milk powder A small amount of water until desired consistency is reached. Keep adding small drops and stir well. If you want a stiffer mixture use less water. To flavour icing use natural juices. Lemon for lemon, orange for orange or even blitz a few cherries or raspberries to make a berry icing. If you do this, the juices replace the water.

I made these with the help of my little people on the weekend. I was shocked to read that in one of the popular brands of cupcake mixes there is a whopping 41 ingredients. These only have five. They are light and fluffy and contain no butter or sugar, perfect for growing bodies. The kids loved decorating them with shiny icing and little creatures you can buy from the supermarket in the cake decorating section. This mixture made 10 cupcakes in small patty pans.

dewatered and stored. An overland conveyor would transport the material from the stockyard across tidal flats via a causeway, with the conveyor continuing along a 2.6km long trestle jetty to a loading wharf situated in 10m deep water. Self-powered barges will transfer the material to a vessel moored approximately 20km offshore in deep Commonwealth waters. EPA Chairman Paul Vogel said several environmental factors were considered during the proposal’s assessment, including potential impacts to benthic communities and habitat such as mangroves and algal mats, marine fauna including turtles, dugongs and Humpback whales, marine environmental quality, flora and vegetation.

• EPA Chairman Paul Vogel said several environmental factors were considered during the proposal’s assessment A new Pilbara iron ore export facility has been recommended for approval by the Environmental Protection Authority. Forge Resources Swan Pty Ltd proposes to construct and operate the facility at Balla Balla, midway between Port Hedland and Karratha and northwest of Whim Creek in the Pilbara. The facility will enable Forge to export about six million tonnes of magnetite concentrate product per year from their approved Balla Balla Magnetite mine site, southeast of the proposed export facility. A seven-kilometre low-pressure slurry pipeline will transport the magnetite concentrate from the minesite to the stockyard where it would be

Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report By Jenni Gates

Martina Bahre and her partner Aaron were up here on a holiday and love their fishing. They specifically wanted to catch their first marlin. While out chasing marlin in 400m of water south of Tantabiddi using a cairns prowler lure with black bart skirts, Martina hooked a huge dolphin fish. The fish was a female and rather large and is pictured this week. Martina has entered it in the fishing comp and Aaron has entered too, with exactly what they wanted to catch: a black marlin. Aaron caught the fish and the two are very chuffed to have done it all in their small boat on their own. Did you hear about the big fish that washed up in Albany? It was reported by a lady to fisheries as being a sick sailfish that was floundering in Two Peoples Bay. The fish, which was later identified as a blue marlin, washed up at Little Beach at 2pm on June 11 and made the little beach seem even smaller. The marlin had samples taken from it for scientific research and the head was kept for the WA museum. The fish weighed an incredible 540kg!

This is the largest blue marlin weighed in Australia. Are you a junior angler or do you have a junior angler at home? During a tournament late last year, the Shimano representatives from Japan and Australia offered several top quality outfits for use by junior anglers who want to get out and be involved with the Game Fishing Club. The Stella reels and T-curve rods are available to junior members of EGFC to use on a loan basis. If you would like to take up this great offer and help your kids to enjoy fishing, call into Tackle World and pick up an outfit. The Exmouth Classic was on this last weekend and around 15 boats participated in the two-day event. The weather on Friday looked ominous with rain clouds that looked like they would stay for a week. However, despite Saturday being a little lumpy on the water, Sunday cleared to be a perfect sunny calm day on the ocean for all involved. There were some great catches of trout, mackerel, tuna, red emperor and other species. For full details go to www.egfc.com.au.

Karratha little athlete’s learn from top Perth coaches By Rob Krueger and Ben Leahy Specialist coaches from WA Little Athletics have been teaching track and field techniques at clinics with school students and athletics clubs in Hedland and Karratha over the past week. The specialist coaches from Perth met up with Karratha’s little athletes during a Sunday afternoon clinic that ran through a range of skills but focused mainly on hurdling techniques. For Karratha’s Little Athletics club, the visit also came during a break from regular competition and allowed them to practice their techniques leading into this Friday’s fourth competition night. International sprint coach François joined the ittle athletics club to impart his knowledge to the older athletes. At the same time, the juniors were introduced to fun activities concentrating on correct running techniques with high knees, fast arms and lightning fast reflex games

to get off the starting line in record time. Triple jump always causes some confusion, so this got extra attention to ensure the athlete’s can put their best foot forward on Friday’s competition night. As well as coaching clinics, the visit by WA Little Athletics also enabled the topic of starting up regional athletics competitions to be discussed – so watch this space. Abid Imam, the WA Little Athletics development officer, said there were more than 9,500 junior participants in WA experiencing the health benefits of the sport.

“Little Athletics offers children a modified athletics program, designed for a broad range of children to develop their athletics skills in a warm and friendly environment,” Abid Imam said. “Little Athletics develops the basic motor skills of running, throwing and jumping. “Developing strength, flexibility, co-ordination and balance provide the basic requirements of all sports. “[And] we want to ensure more children in the Pilbara and Kimbereley can experience the great benefits that come from participation in Little Athletics.”

Mountain bikers brave rain and night trails in Round 4 By Mitch Ewin and Damien Muller Helmet and handlebar lights were beaming from 52 bikes for the start of the fourth race of the Scott Cycles Burrup Mountain Bike Club Championship Series. Round 4 was also the club’s first ever night race, which kicked off from the BMX track at 6pm on Saturday June 15. The six-kilometre course over single track and 4WD roads also included a circuit of the BMX track at the end of each lap for added variety. Rain during the race made for a boggy track, but it didn’t stop Elite rider Richie Chipman skipping away for his maiden victory of the year, covering his three laps in a time of 49.03. Mark Smith was only seconds behind in 49.22 and Ben Leahy was third in 52.17. The Expert category that was also run over three laps of the course was keenly contested with Shannon Tunstead posting a winning time of 51.48 with Nick Muller close behind in 52.34 and third place taken by Keith Johns in 56.19. The juniors also fared well in their one lap event with Dylan Bennets winning in a very

respectable time of 20.46. William Gethin was second at 23.15 and Dylan Muller took third spot with 23.33. Special mention should be made to Emma Raudonikis, who was the youngest racer and put in an exceptionally brave effort to defy her 12-years and navigate the course’s tricky ridge section at night. The downpour didn’t deter the female riders either with Amanda Ewin first to complete the two laps, coming in nearly seven minutes ahead of her nearest rival Mikayla Smith with times of 41.31 and 48.28 respectively. Janya Crawford was third in 49.19. The Sport category (two laps) was won by Steve McCleod in 38.04, while Rodney Gethin in 39.30 and Stephen Armstrong in 40.18 were second and third. In addition to the seniors night ride, there was also another Dirtmasters mountain biking skills session held on Saturday afternoon. The junior Dirtmasters spent their time practicing and learning new skills under the watchful eyes of parents and club members. Skills covered on the day included cornering, picking and

riding a line, riding log drops and riding log overs. With a broad range of ages present, ranging from four to 12-year-olds, the youngsters were broken into two age groups and sent out at intervals to race against the clock. The Dirtmaster category is all about developing mountain bike riders from the age of three up to 13 and activities are based around introducing mountain bike skills. Meanwhile, next event up for the club is this Saturday June 22’s Doctor Baynton’s 6 Hour Remedy race with solo riders and teams competing to do as many laps as possible of either a six or nine kilometre course in the allotted time. The race runs from 3-9pm taking in a loop course that leads from the BMX track through the Baynton hills toward Horizon power station and back. Details can be found on the BMBC website at home.spin. net.au/burrupmb. The club also requests that cars and motorbikes pay attention to signs in the area and steer clear of the course for the duration of the race. For more Dirtmaster information call Damien Muller on 0400 109 862 after hours.

Another fast paced round of Karratha District Junior Soccer was played over the weekend with the Nickol 1 team holding off a fast finishing Glory 1 in the 13s competition in what one of the round’s most exciting games. Congratulations to Richard Shaw on scoring all four of the Nickol 1 goals. Nickol 2 also had a good win over Salt in the second game while Glory 2 beat Nickol 3 in the third match of the day. Well done to Matthew Middleton on bagging five goals for Glory 2. In the 17s competition a very competitive match, saw Nickol run out winners over Glory by the narrowest of margins – well played by both teams. There are no matches this weekend beginning June 21 as Karratha’s 9s, 11s, 13s and 15s age group teams are travelling to Newman for the annual Pilbara Inter town Friendly competition.

Good luck to all teams and safe travelling. Mathew Cheeseman, the referee coordinator for Football West will be visiting on the following weekend to update existing referees and run a course for prospective ones on Sunday June 30. BMBC bikers clean their trails By Damien Muller

The club wishes to thank the Clean Sweep Task Force for providing this fundraising opportunity, which proved to be a win for the Burrup Mountain Bike Club, the broader community and the environment.

K 31

On the Sunday morning after the Burrup Mountain Bike Club’s Round 4 night race, 31 club members and their family volunteered their time to raise funds while cleaning up their trails. The volunteers spent three to four hours collecting domestic and industrial rubbish that had been dumped around the Karratha hills over the years, which they then placed in two skip bins. The rubbish drive was part of a Clean Sweep Task Force and Bucks for Bags program funded by the Shire of Roebourne, WA Police, North West Shelf Project, Pluto LNG, Woodside and Rio Tinto. An amazing variety of rubbish was removed, including car parts, old mattresses, truck and car tyres, a refrigerator and the inevitable fish carcasses. Some areas are obviously regular dumping spots because one small section took almost two hours to clean up. One volunteer was overheard commenting: “The amount of rubbish is amazing.” “We have a tip that is only closed a couple of days a year and costs nothing for domestic rubbish [so] what is with these people?” Despite the frustration, however, most

volunteers enjoyed the unique chance to clean up the areas they love to ride and raise funds for the club at the same time.

By Ben Leahy You might not know it, but it is bowls season up and down the North West coast, from Carnarvon to Exmouth, through to the Pilbara and up to Broome. It is the time of year when local clubs hold their major carnivals with the Dampier Bowls Club Carnival to kick off this Saturday June 22 and the Karratha Bowls Club Carnival to take place a week later on June 29-30. Spectators wishing to watch the Dampier Carnival, which will feature 16 teams of four players each battling it out for cash prizes, can wander down after 8.30am once the first bowl is rolled in anger. Teams hoping to compete should turn their attentions to the Karratha Carnival the following week, which hopes to attract up to 24 teams. team during the tournament. The prize money might not be big bucks, but both the Dampier and Karratha carnivals still attract visiting bowlers, who travel up the WA coast from places like Perth, enjoying a holiday while also competing in tournaments along the way. Reg Scott from the Karratha Bowls Club said the Karratha Carnival would have around eight or nine caravans of travelling bowlers competing. For beginner bowlers wanting to try the sport away from the glare of a major competition, the Karratha club also holds drawn pairs games on Tuesdays. This means you don’t have to come to the club with a bowling partner as teams of two bowlers are drawn to play together from a hat. Reg said Tuesday competitions and bowls in general were a great way to meet new friends. “Bowls is great fun – bowlers are social animals,” he said.

EVENT FUNDRAISER

Five of Ovation Performance Company’s most dedicated dancers are headed to Perth this July to compete in the most elite and competitive dance competition in WA – CSTD Dance In Extreme. They will be among over 2,000 entrants for the competitions from July 3 to 14. Competitors come from WA’s most successful CSTD dance schools, interstate and as far as Singapore. “We would like to thank Ovation for giving our daughter Ella this opportunity,” proud parent Vicki Cartledge said. “They have been so generous in their belief, time, expertise and dedication in getting her ready.” To showcase the outcome of their dedicated preparations, Ovation is holding a fundraising evening at St

Luke’s College on Sunday June 30. This event is open to everyone and also supports Ovation’s ongoing endeavour to raise the $30,000 required to install Karratha’s only professional sprung dance floor at St Paul’s Parish Hall, which will be available for community use. Ovation would like to thank St Luke’s College and St Paul’s Parish for supporting the entrants with unlimited venue access for training. Other generous sponsors of the individual dancers include Belly Fruit & Beyond, Burrup Plumbing, Norwest Craft, Carpet Court and Karratha City Real Estate.
