The Onslow community is left without a supermarket after a fire broke out early Monday morning. Onslow police said they received the callout about 4am after a member of the public reported flames and smoke coming from the roof of the supermarket. Local volunteer firefighters and police attended, with fire crews able to contain the fire within about 30 minutes. The fire started in the freezer section of the supermarket but was contained before spreading to the rest of the business. Police said significant water and smoke damage as a result of the fire could

have caused as much as $1.5million worth of damage. Although fire investigations are continuing, Onslow Police said they do not consider the fire to be suspiciously lit, and that that it appears to have been ignited due to a mechanical fault on one of the freezers. No one was injured during the incident. The Shire of Ashburton has formed a coordination group to respond to community needs, made up of Onslow Supermarket, Shire of Ashburton, Onslow Police, Emergency Services, Chevron, Bechtel, Thalanyji and Nikki’s Restaurant. Essential grocery supplies will now be available at MPC Hall.

Pilbara’s palliative services to operate under new name already managed PKC’s operations so the rebranding was more about helping to increase awareness of the services offered by the not-for-profit group. “Southern Cross Care are nationally recognised, a much higher profile brand and very well regarded, Broad said. The move comes as more people continue to move to the Pilbara to live and work and demand for respite and palliative services grows. Broad said this demand was evident in the popularity ofSCC’s Samson Beach Day retreat centre in Point Samson. Samson Beach Day gives carers the chance to take a break and spend time at the beach or enjoying a meal out. “It means if you have someone in your home that you provide the care for, you can both go out to Samson, and you can have a break, while our paid professional carers look after your loved one, Broad said.

By Ben Leahy Elderly and disabled residents and their families seeking respite and palliative services will need to take note that the region’s service provider has recently

changed names. In a ceremony in late June, directors rebranded Pilbara Kimberley Care as Southern Cross Care. Operations manger for the North West Julie Broad said Southern Cross Care

The facility has two rooms and is flexible in the way it accommodates families, recently housing 11 people in one go. “We would see dozens and dozens of families using that facility over [the course of] a year – there would be someone in there each week and sometimes more than one, Broad said. Other popular SCC services include

Meals on Wheels deliveries to Karratha, Roebourne, Wickham and Port and South Hedland, while staff also drive people to doctor’s appointments and the supermarket to do grocery shopping. SCC staff even visit people’s homes to help repair broken or hazardous objects around the house. SCC additionally runs day centres in South Hedland and Roebourne, which provide cooked breakfasts and hold social activities, such as craft workshops and movie and popcorn screenings. Newer SCC services include professional nurses, who visit people in their homes, and a mental health service. Broad said the aim is to continue building the range of services available in the Pilbara so that fewer families with elderly and disabled members are forced to move to the cities to access the specialist care. “We aim to provide the same level of service as people would readily access in the metro, she said. “Our major challenge up here is getting and keeping good staff and affordable housing. As a not-for-profit group, Broad said SCC always welcomed donations and volunteers helping out with activities, like Meals on Wheels.

new tricks at a series of guest lectures last week. University of Western Australia Business School professors David Day and Peter Hartley spoke about leadership and the state of the resources industry at luncheons in Karratha and Hedland on July 2 and 5. The talks were part of the UWA’s centenary year celebrations with the professors being accompanied by the UWA deputy vice-chancellor, Alec Cameron, and the dean of the Business School, Phillip Dolan. Supported by BHP Billiton and Woodside, the Business School arranged the visit to strengthen its ties with the Pilbara region. During his keynote talk, professor Day, who has worked with the US Army and leading global businesses, looked to settle the question: ‘Are He said that while studies had identified that

Winter to bring good returns for cattle stations By Ben Leahy Station owners are expecting good returns for the sale of their cattle this season as heavy winter rainfall and abundant feed have fattened up livestock across much of the Pilbara. Last month was the wettest June on record for Karratha, Port Hedland and parts of the central and east Pilbara. “It is good winter rain, probably the best one we’ve had in a while, and it has kept the summer feed going and the cattle are still fat,” Kim Parsons

from Coolawanyah Station, near Millstream-Chichester National Park, said. “Basically cattle prices come back to the condition of the animal, so to put it in a nutshell the heavier the animal the more money you are going to make.” The extra feed and forecasts of more rain in July has some pastoralists weighing up whether to hold on to their cattle to add extra size to them or instead get them to market as soon as possible. Kevin Powell, a stock agent for Elders in the Pilbara, said the

“majority” will be getting their stock to market. He said extra staff, who seasonally help with the muster, had arrived at many Pilbara stations and were consequently sitting idle with the heavy rains preventing them from getting to work. “Most of the stations that I deal with have got the workers and everything in place, so the minute they can get back into mustering they will,” Powell said. However, pastoralists who choose to hold onto their cattle will need to watch the markets

closely. “[Cattle] prices were strong this week but look to be easing a bit,” Powell said. “You have to be careful also, if you come in too late, you will meet up with the spring cattle from down south so there will be cheaper cattle on the market.” Despite these challenges though, Powell said “there is one or two stations that will try and push their cattle backwards – they will get slightly less per kilo but they will get a lot more kilos”. Station owners will also have to be wary of another risk brought about by the rains, according to Bill Cotching from

land-use group Rangelands NRM. “It is not so bad when its green, but as this increased vegetation dries off in a few months time, there is a lot greater risk of wildfire taking out big areas of country,” he said. “That means the pastoralists and Department of Environment and Conservation could have a bigger job in front of them this year to do strategic burn offs to try and prevent wildfires.” Yet, despite the risks, Coolawanyah’s Parsons was happy with the winter rainfall. “You never knock the rains back in this country,” he said.

Pilbara station life in the 1920s revealed in new book From floods and droughts to scrapes with death and dingoes, life was never dull for 1920s Pilbara station owner Roy Parsons. Roy bought Coolawanyah Station, 200km south east of Karratha, in 1922 after serving in the navy in World War I and set about recording his adventures on the remote property in a series of diary entries spanning decades. Those entries now form the basis for Roy’s Story: The life and times of Roy Parsons, a new book compiled by the station owner’s daughter, Elaine Campbell. Elaine spent five years piecing the book together from Roy’s diary and the station’s business records and now she is ready to release it at a launch in Roebourne on July 13. “The hardest part was what to leave out of the book – there was so much of interest in the documents,” Elaine said. Among the fascinating tales in the book is the story of Roy and local Indigenous man Hardy. Roy met Hardy when the Aboriginal man was still leading a traditional lifestyle with his wife in the

hills near Coolawanyah. The couple subsequently moved to Coolawanyah and became invaluable workers at the station – not least on the day Roy was down a well repairing water pumps. On that occasion, suspended halfway down the well and having finished his repairs, Roy began to wonder why Hardy would not wind up the windlass and bring him back to the surface. “So dad skimmed up the pipe because he had been in the navy and he was pretty good at that,” Elaine said. “When he got to the top he saw that Old Hardy was hanging on with his arms around the windlass barrel so it wouldn’t slip and fall down. “That saved dad’s life and now you’ll find we’ve got a well on Coolawanyah called Hardy’s Well.” Other stories tell how the station switched from sheep to

cattle in the 1950s to prevent dingo attacks on livestock and talk about Elaine’s mum, who was granddaughter of Roebourne’s famous pioneering woman from the 1800s, Emma Whithnell. Yet getting the stories into print has not been easy for Elaine. Originally writing out the notes by hand, the 82-year-old eventually bought herself a computer and attended Senior Citizen’s classes to learn how to use it. Clearly, such sacrifices are a labour of love for Elaine, who now lives in Esperance. “I still go home [to Coolawanyah] as often as I can – they were very happy times growing up on the station, a happy childhood.” Roy’s Story: The life and times of Roy Parsons will be launched with morning tea at 10am at Roebourne Visitor’s Centre on July 13.

Uni wants Pilbara students to invest in business studies

• Former Newman student turned founder of a global management fund James McClements chats with St Luke’s young leaders (left) while fellow students try out UWA’s investment game

By Ben Leahy The University of Western Australia held workshops in finance and leadership at high schools throughout the Pilbara last week as it looks to encourage more young students from remote regions to complete higher education.

pursuing higher studies. Professor Phillip Dolan, the dean of UWA’s Business School, said his faculty already had strong links to the Pilbara through its relations with senior mining executives but was looking to build grassroots ties.

Among those former students and UWA graduates was James McClements, who grew up in Newman but later co-founded Resource Capital Funds, which manages $3.4bn of investments.

Staff from the UWA’s Aspire program said the visit aimed to help regional students understand their career options.

“One of the best ways to put something back into the region is to encourage students to come study at UWA,” professor Dolan said.

Having served on the boards of major resource companies and arts foundations, McClements told high school students that an ability to speak confidently in public was one of the most important skills they could develop.

They said remote students were often reluctant to move away from their families to attend university, while the financial cost and alternative opportunities in the mining industry were further barriers to

“So we’ve come up to talk to them about their aspirations and dreams and we’ve brought along former students to answer questions about what it takes to be successful in business.”

In a separate session, former Broome resident and current UWA Commerce undergraduate Rachel Fong took school students through a university-designed internet game.

The game gives students the chance to invest in pretend shares and property. During the UWA’s visit to St Luke’s College, one of the students to generate the highest returns in the game did so by borrowing $1.3m in pretend cash, which he then invested in shares that subsequently made a dramatic increase in value. “It is a strategy that worked here, but not something we usually advise people to try,” Fong said with a laugh. Other schools the UWA Aspire tour visited included the Karratha, Hedland and Newman Senior High Schools.

The city centre transformation is well underway. In response to feedback received regarding the current traffic management on Sharpe Avenue, the Shire of Roebourne and LandCorp has decided to temporarily implement one-way traffic along Sharpe Avenue in a southerly direction from Warambie Road to Welcome Road whilst the road works are being undertaken. This measure will improve the safety for motorists, pedestrians and construction workers whilst enabling the road works to be completed earlier than originally estimated. Access is being maintained to all city centre businesses through the staging of works however please be aware of the alternative access routes that are in place.

Storytelling and tall tails at Millars Well Primary By Ben Leahy Millars Well Primary School students celebrated Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal cultures last week by taking part in fun activities, such as kangaroo cooking and boomerang painting classes. Karratha resident Nina Stewart helped the young students cook kangaroo tails, which were first singed in the fire to remove the hairs before being wrapped in damp newspaper and cooked in a fire pit for one-to-two hours. Other parts of the kangaroo were used to make a stew and kebabs, but the tail is clearly a favourite part of the animal. “Everyone goes mad for kangaroo tail,” Nina said. Other activities on the day included Torres Strait Islander storytelling through music and dance, language lessons and face painting. Students were also able to paint their own designs on T-shirts donated by Karratha Kmart and climb a transportable rock-climbing wall that the Perth company Radrock brought to the school.

Pilbara kids change the law By Tamara Binamat Representatives from the Parliament of Western Australia recently toured through the Pilbara, from remote Aboriginal communities to the biggest townships, to teach students about law and parliament. Students were encouraged to think about how they would change current laws, and what new laws they would implement. Interestingly, what students were passionate about varied greatly from communities, to townships. Rohan Davis and Michael Loney, parliamentary education presenters from the parliamentary education office said the purpose of the incursions is to make sure students understand where laws come from. The students certainly came up with some interesting laws, such as shooting birds should be illegal, except bush turkeys because they taste good. Mr Loney said the issues that concerned kids in Aboriginal communities were not often issues that concern town-based students. “Quite often it was things like

the availability of alcohol and violence, those sort of things really worried them,” he said. “Mining towns like Karratha, that isn’t the big thing. “One of the big things that came across [in Aboriginal communities] is respect for culture. “In the mining towns that’s not the issue, the issue there is often the environment or facilities.” The team conducted incursions in many places across the Pilbara including Parnngurr, Jigalong, Karratha, Warralong, Yandeyarra and Marble Bar. Mr Loney said he was surprised how little students all over the state knew about parliament. “Quite often the only introduction to a parliament that a lot of people have is media clips on the TV of members shouting at each other,” he explained. “But of course there is many, many hours of respectful debate in parliament that you’d never see.” Mr Loney and Mr Davis both agreed that the most common issues kids wanted enforced across the Pilbara is a commitment to tidy and safe towns, and smoking to be banned.

Stock Tip of the Week

Perth: Suite 6, 36 Cedric Street, Stirling. Ph 9440 7100 The ASX200 posted strong gains on Wednesday and Thursday to close the week ending June 28 up 64 points (1.35 per cent). The rally was largely led by the US after some encouraging economic data together with two separate Federal Bank Presidents stating that the market had grossly overestimated the possibility of imminent tightening. In local news, it was certainly a very interesting week with the ousting of Julia Gillard as Prime Minister in favour of her predecessor Kevin Rudd. I’m sure she will be sorely missed. Yet not by Australian investors it seems after the ASX200 rallied 156 points over Wednesday and Thursday following news of her sacking.

Papillon Resources Ltd (PIR) – SPECULATIVE BUY Papillon Resources Limited recently released the Pre-Feasibility Study on the open pit development of its 90 per cent-owned Fekola Project in Mali. The study demonstrates that even by using a lower case gold price assumption of US$1,100/oz and throughput rate of 4Mtpa, the mine delivers robust project economics, laying the foundation for the Definitive Feasibility Study, which will now commence. The PFS indicates there will be all-in-sustaining cash costs of US$725/oz for the life-of-mine, which implies low quartile costs, solid margins, and quick capital payback. As a result of the PFS Hartleys maintains its speculative buy, with a valuation of $1.68 and 12 month price target of $1.71. Current price of PIR is ~70 cents.

Shaun, Baynton West A: This is an important question. At Investor Assist, we consider property a long-term investment and recommend a minimum of five years, and preferably seven to ten, to be a suitable timeframe to invest. This is because buying an investment property involves substantial upfront, ongoing and exit costs. To make a profit therefore, the value of an investment property needs to grow by more than the value of these costs plus the after-tax costs associated with holding onto the property. This can take time. It can also take time for a property to increase in value, which is important if you are targeting capital growth from your property investment. You may also need to endure occasional years of low or even negative growth throughout the course of your investment. There may be other factors that influence the period of time in which you invest, including your tax situation and your age until retirement. In addition you may wish to explore buying your investment property via a self-managed super fund, which is something that a professional advisor can assist you with. Got a question about property investment? Investor Assist general manager Peter Gianoli is happy to answer them. Peter has more than 15 years experience in the industry, overseeing sales and the settlement of properties worth in excess of $1bn. Send your questions to AskPeter@investorassist.com.au or visit www. investorassist.com.au.

Q: I am nearing retirement age and I am considering buying an investment property to improve our financial position. Ideally, how long do I need to hold onto the property?

Small to medium-sized enterprise (SME) owners are positive about growing their business in the next twelve months, according to findings from RSM Bird Cameron’s thinkBIG 2013 study. thinkBIG 2013 measures the pulse of the Australian SME sector. It benchmarks business confidence and the attitudes of owners towards planning, growth and profitability, exit planning and superannuation. 308 business owners participated in the 2013 study, providing insights into how Australian SMEs feel about their business. 42 per cent of respondents report revenue growth over the past twelve months, 33 per cent report no change and 25 per cent report a decline. Keiran Sullivan, Director, RSM Bird Cameron, explains, “It is not surprising that more than half of businesses reported a flat or reduced turnover. Many industries are still experiencing difficult times. The retail sector faces challenges such as the battle for online sales, decreased consumer confidence and unemployment. Resources, mining and manufacturing encountered challenges caused by exchange rates and the high cost of doing business in Australia.” Despite a difficult year, 64 per cent of SMEs are optimistic and believe their business will grow in the next twelve months. When breaking down the numbers across Australia, SME owners in regional centres are most

Coming home By Tamara Binamat

Country singer s o n g w ri te r Theona Councillor rose to fame with her hit single Sweet Black Man, and now she is returning home to Port Hedland to perform during NAIDOC Week.

The long-awaited opening weekend for the Karratha Leisureplex was highlighted with a concert last Saturday July 29.

Originally from Hedland, Theona is currently based in Perth while she develops her music career. She released her brand new album Cover Me just last month and is turning music industry heads already. “I wasn’t performing much when I first started writing songs, just in church,” Theona said. “But people liked it so I thought I should do a full album.” Port Hedland will get to experience Theona’s new songs for the first time at the Markets and

Pete Murray headlined the gig, which was hosted by music video royalty, Faustina “Fuzzy” Agolley and supported by The Voice contestant Michael Paynter. Celebrity athletes including Leisel Jones, Damien Martin and Liz Ellis were guests at the celebration.

The Last

Kinection

By Tamara Binamat

If you love mainstream RnB and hip-hop, then you will love The Last Kinection.

K 20

The Indigenous hip-hop trio is made up of brother and sister Weno and Nay, and long-time friend DJ Jaytee, who have forged a respected career in Australia’s music industry for many years. Before The Last Kinection, Naomi (MC Nay) fronted RnB pop group Shakaya, while Joel (Weno) and Jacob (Jaytee) were part of Australian hip-hop group Local Knowledge. The Last Kinection will be performing in Wickham at the Picture Theatre Gardens as part of NAIDOC Week celebrations. The event will feature health checks, traditional food and a fashion parade by local designer Kaninda’s Lilla Gagliano. The Last Kinection formed about seven years ago and their journey has been a whirlwind ever since. With a pursuit to create music about issues tacking Indigenous Australia, the group balance the confronting side of their music with humour and entertainment. Weno said massive highlights of TLK’s career include supporting Public Enemy, Flo Rida and Arrested Development. “Supporting Arrested Development at the Sydney Festival was pretty amazing,” he said. “These are bands I’ll play when I’m DJing and to be hanging out with them - that was pretty tricky!” Even after national success, TLK still have a community focus, and a dedication to Indigenous people. “NAIDOC Week is a celebration for our mob all over the country and being able to perform at NAIDOC events is an honour,” Weno said. “We’re really excited to go to [that] side of the country and celebrate NAIDOC.” TLK are working on releasing their third album, and Weno said the group are having a lot of fun making it. “The bonus is we really know each other and we

have that connection,” he said. Weno said the trio was recently in the Pilbara region conducting music workshops at Roebourne Prison and performing at the Roebourne Ampitheatre, and he is excited to return to our region so soon. “It’s an amazing place with an amazing history,” he said. Those qualities will be honoured all week as the Shire of Roebourne celebrates NAIDOC.

Pilbara’s biggest play group day Photos by CB Snapz Media Services

Kids big and small were treated to Karratha Community House’s annual Pilbara Play Day on Monday June 24 at the Frank Butler Centre in Karratha. The event featured a giant sand pit, bouncing castles, face-painting and much more. A highlight for all the kids was a very special visit from celebrities such as Iggle Piggle, Mickey Mouse and Dora. Local ambulance and fire engines were displayed and children were able to explore the emergency vehicles. The event was run thanks to the help of many volunteers.

The Best Bacon

Sandwich in the World I discovered that Bakers Delight has Mini Vegemite Scrolls and when I did, I put together this protein packed breakfast to start my day. It’s perfect for the weekend when you are going to need extra energy to run around and it’s simple and delicious with good-quality ingredients.

Pilbara Dental Care

• 1 mini vegemite scroll • ½ punnet sliced mushrooms • 2 short cut lean bacon rashes • Small handfull of spinach I eat mine fresh, but if you want to warm the vegemite scroll without drying it out, then wrap it in foil and put it in a low-heat oven while you cook the other ingredients. Spray a non-stick pan with olive oil spray. Pan fry bacon until browned to your liking and set aside to keep warm. Toss mushrooms and spinach in the pan and cook for two minutes until tender, season with salt and pepper. Cut vegemite scroll carefully through the middle, layer ingredients and enjoy.

Wickham’s deadeye darts players claim Pilbara champs score that automatically wins the round. Yet overall victory relied on a team effort as the tournament stretched over four days and involved two rounds against each of the seven other teams – Carnarvon, Geraldton, Exmouth, Karratha, Newman and Wickham 2. “We gave it our best shot and ended up winning the title – it has been 12-years since we won a title, so it is a really good feeling,” team member Vic Hedland said. Vic added that the death of the team’s friend and keen darts player, known as Shorty inspired them to the win. “We did it for a brother boy who passed away,” Vic said. “He was a gun player, and we only buried him not long before we went to the Pilbara [championships] and our victory was really heartfelt.” And after a long tournament spread over four days, no doubt, the Wickham boys also raised more than the odd glass in honour of their friend.

Have you been fishing lately? If you have, you’ve been one of the lucky anglers this week. The weather hasn’t been too flash for fishing and with forecasts some days of 30 knots, it hasn’t been the best for the short term visitors wanting to get out on the water. However, strong winds is not the usual pattern for this time of year, so there should be some great days ahead too. Perhaps we should write the report this week and say that there is simply not much out there? Apparently there are a few guys that read this report and comment

on how there is always good fishing in Exmouth. Well, there are certainly times when the fishing is slower than others, but generally speaking there is always someone catching something somewhere be it fish, crabs, squid or whatever. Two winter-residents that regularly get out in the gulf are Trevor and Rose Earle. I think we should officially call Rose the Cod Queen as she seems to get a good one every year. This week, she managed to land an 11kg estuary cod without any assistance from Trevor in their dinghy. The fish was in 8m of water and Rose has entered it in the monthly fishing competition. Rose and Trevor enjoy coming here every year and catch fish to eat during their stay. They do delicious smoked fish, as well as many other meals using fresh local seafood. Harry Miller and his mate have been fishing off the beaches and yesterday came in to the store with a great photo of a chinaman fish that they caught using 15lb braid. The pair were very excited to have caught such a hard-fighting fish on light line from the shore. They were using stick-baits and casting with a light Loomis rod and Certate reel.

By Clint Degebrodt Mixed indoor footy debuted for the first time in the North West thanks to the invite from the Shire of Roebourne to participate in the Leisureplex’s grand opening weekend. The indoor match was based on AFL 9s and the V Swans’ Modified Numbers Social Footy program that has been running in Karratha for three years. The teams were drawn from the Pilbara AFL Masters Mudcrabs team and the Pilbara AFL Women’s Panthers team, which provide over 32s and females with an easy way to play footy.

Fast, friendly and fun, the game is non-contact and makes for a nicely combined cardio and anaerobic workout, while having a kick with friends. Negotiations between the Mudcrabs, Panthers and Shire of Roebourne will start in earnest with the aim of staging a summer indoor football competition in the state of the art facility. Meanwhile, if you are keen to have a social kick with either the masters or female programs, please feel free to come down to Kevin Richards Memorial Oval in Millars Well on Tuesdays at 6.15pm. Anglers back on the water to finish the 2013 Billfish Shootout Despite again receiving excellent support from local anglers and businesses, this year’s annual Billfish Shootout tag and release fishing tournament was sadly interrupted by the weather. A great turnout of 44 teams and 152 anglers chasing a prize pool in excess of $30,000 had lined up for the start of 2013 Shootout, run by the Nickol Bay Sportfishing Club with the support of its partner Bradken. But unfortunately the weather didn’t come to the party. Indeed, conditions were so rough on the water that the committee was forced to make the decision, shortly after the start of competition, to postpone the competition. Despite this, two teams somehow manage to tag and release billfish in the appalling conditions before the event was called off. Chad Killmore from team Trophy Hunter just managed to tag his sailfish minutes before Wayne Brown, aka the Brown from team Reef Dog, to rightfully claim the champion angler and team for day 1 and for the competition overall. Trophy Hunter was the champion team for a second time much to the delight of skipper George Popa. The other angler on Trophy

Hunter was ex Australian cricket captain, Kim Hughes, who was also a team member during the last victory. It was a great effort from both teams to capture any fish in those conditions. Wayne Brown, however, did not go home empty handed as only two fish were caught, the lucky angler prize of a dinghy, motor and trailer package ended up being a 50/50 affair that was decided with a coin toss by none other than Kim Hughes. Kim has past experience in having big events decided by the toss of a coin. Luckily for Wayne Brown, the coin toss was favourable and he won the prize. Normally, the lucky angler prize is decided from a draw of eligible fish tags, however the unique situation this year called for something different. Although days two and three were called off, good crowds converged at the club during the evening presentations and were entertained by MC and host Scott Coghlan of the Western Angler magazine. Many door prizes and raffles were given away and a good atmosphere kept spirits high. The committee afterwards decided to re-run days two and three of the competition on the

• Bradman junior sports auction winners Travers Clarke and Peter Murnane with Lisa Popa and Kim Hughes weekend of June 15-16. 27 teams were able to take part in the rerun with many great daily prizes and overall champions trophies to be won. Jackson Marriot, in particular, had a great day and tagged three sailfish on board Tourettes skippered by Kevin Deacon to win the champion junior and team for the day. Tim Perry of Backslappers took out the day two adult champion prize. On day three, Alyssa Faulkner

of Smoke and Mirrors narrowly beat Suzanne Wilson of Pulin Skirt to secure the adult daily prize, a great effort as both managed to tag marlin. Alyssa went on to also win the champion female category with the black marlin and sailfish captures. Young Darcy Bryce of team Reckless stole the show on day three with a great capture of a marlin and two sailfish to win the daily junior and overall junior champion prizes, pipping Jackson Marriot in the process,

in addition to being a member of the winning team on day three Reckless. A great effort from the young angler. It was great to see so many people and families attend the Billfish Shootout 2013 reloaded weekend and partake in the spirit of the event. The club wishes to sincerely thank all entrants and sponsors for their support and looks forward to seeing everyone next year for the tenth anniversary Billfish Shootout in 2014.
