Training sector reform overhauls study options Western Australia’s training system will undergo its biggest ever reform, with the aim to ensure more students gain priority skills to meet the needs of a growing workforce. Training and Workforce Development Minister Terry Redman announced on Thursday that Future Skills WA, a studentfocused model to provide improved career pathways, would be introduced from January 1, 2014. Mr Redman said Future Skills WA would change the way training was delivered to West Australian students across more than 630 qualifications identified as priorities in WA. Students wishing to pursue a qualification aligned to occupations identified on the State Priority Occupation List will now be given access to a place with the training provider of their choice.

Financial assistance, similar to the HECS-HELP scheme used in the university sector, will be made available to eligible students enrolled in Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses. The current 50 per cent concession support program will also be retained. “Apprenticeships and traineeships will continue to underpin WA’s training sector and the State Government will continue to guarantee funding to provide excellent career options for all students,” the Minister said.

By Ben Leahy Dampier Port executive expect that a “world first” port expansion officially begun last week will save the North West’s mining and oil and gas companies tens of millions of dollars. Under the project, which is expected to be completed by January 2014, cargo vessels will be met at anchor by large floating decks up to 110m by 38m in size. The vessels will then be able to rapidly unload their cargo onto the decks and set sail again as part of an innovative wharfing system that will allow global cargo liners to run regular routes to the Pilbara for the first time. The floating decks will be capable of handling all kinds of cargo, including heavy machinery and huge pre-assembled modular pieces designed for the mining and oil and gas industries. Concept designer and Dampier Port chief operating officer Captain Paul Toussaint-Jackson said it will be a first for the region because most mining equipment is currently shipped through Fremantle and Melbourne and Sydney. “The floating deck will facilitate direct China to Pilbara supply chains, rather than shipping to ports on the East Coast or Fremantle, [and] then moving cargo thousands of kilometres by truck,” Toussaint-Jackson said. “This will reduce critical supply chain times and costs by as much as 70 per cent.” With the Pilbara generating one-sixth of Australia’s gross domestic product, supplying its resources industry is a lucrative trade. The Dampier Port expansion comes after global cargo liners have spent decades searching for a port that will enable them to run regular freight shipping routes to the Pilbara’s resources industry. But while the region’s ports have excellent infrastructure for iron ore and gas exports, ships visiting the limited number of cargo docks at the Dampier and Port Hedland ports can face lengthy delays when unloading. Dampier’s docking wharf, for instance, has room for just a single truck to pull alongside a visiting cargo ship. This means the vessel must use its cranes to load trucks individually in a process that can sometimes take up to two or three weeks. Under Toussaint-Jackson’s system, however, vessels as large as 260m in length will be able to rapidly unload their entire cargo onto the floating decks and quickly set sail for their next destination. With the vessel departed, tugboats can then tow the floating deck to the shore and load the cargo onto trucks. Toussaint-Jackson said this level of efficiency

was critical in attracting major cargo liners, which run on global timetables and cannot afford to be delayed in port. However, the floating deck system also has a number of other advantages, according to Dampier Port Authority chief executive officer Steve Lewis. He said the decks were about 10-15 per cent cheaper to build than conventional port infrastructure, and faster too, with the current construction expected to take less than eight months. They are also more environmentally friendly as there would be no need to dredge the harbour. And with Dampier Port having a limited ability to expand landward onto the Burrup Peninsula, the ability to build more decks and anchor them in the harbour offers an important way to increase the port’s capacity. The Port and the State Government will also not be required to raise capital for the project as the first decks to be launched in January 2014 are being privately funded by two proponents. Yet, despite being privately funded, the system will be open to other users. This is expected to enable billionaire Gina Rinehart’s Roy Hill mine project and Yara Nitrate’s plant expansion on the Burrup Peninsula to be among the first customers to utilise the new decks early next year. But Port COO Toussaint-Jackson also expects the system to not just cut costs but also generate local jobs and trigger wider trade. With cargo operations expected to greatly increase at the port, Toussaint-Jackson said opportunities will open up for trucking, stevedoring and refuelling companies. The ability to import directly to the Pilbara could also significantly alter the cold chain supply for companies catering for mining worker’s camps, for instance. “It also provides an excellent opportunity for potential exports other than iron ore and LNG to leave the Pilbara – whatever those might be,” Toussaint-Jackson said. “We think the floating deck … system is going to be a game changer.”

The Shire of Roebourne is set to review the future of the Roebourne Community Aquatic Centre, the Cossack Town Site and the Karratha and Roebourne Visitor Centres in the coming months. The Roebourne Aquatic Centre is the amenity most likely to undergo major change with any report into its future expected to recommend closing the pool in favour of a new redevelopment. The pool has deteriorated in recent years and was most recently the subject of Department of Health concerns in 2012 and 2013 over the maintenance of its depth markers and its water turnover rate. With the Shire unable to raise an expected $10m in funding needed to build a new aquatic centre that meets with modern safety standards, Shire Councillors instead voted on August 19 to seek other uses for the site. “The future of the Roebourne Community Aquatic Centre has been under

companies for the temporary management of the site, while it makes plans for Cossack’s long term future beyond 2017. Councillors are also expected to vote in favour of reviewing the operations of the Karratha and Roebourne Visitor’s Centres. Both visitor’s centres have fluctuated between recording profits and losses in the past five-years and rely on the Shire for significant funding. The Shire said that while financial support for visitor’s centres is essential, the $540,000 it provided in the last financial year was significantly more than the $300,000 spent by neighbouring shire, the Town of Port Hedland. “[The] increasing costs and continued financial dependence [by the visitor’s centres] on the Shire is not desirable in the long term,” the council meeting’s Agenda report said. “It would be strategic to consider a more sustainable operational model for delivery of sustainable visitor information services going forward.”

Councillors at the August 19 council meeting also voted in a separate Item to seek to hand the management of the Cossack Historic Town site over to private contractors between 2014-17. The Shire of Roebourne has made almost $1.8m in losses managing Cossack over the past three-years and had sought to hand the role over to the National Trust by 2014. However, following a breakdown in talks with the National Trust, the Shire will now seek tenders from private

Western Australian firm Gresley Abas Architects has won the tender to design the multi-million dollar Dampier Community Hub. The community hub is expected to include a childcare centre for 70 children, a library and offices and meeting rooms for up to four organisations, including the Dampier Community Association and a possible doctor’s clinic. The proposal also includes a series of additional multipurpose rooms for use by art, exercise and other community groups.

It is hoped that Gresley Abas will now present a concept design of the building to the Shire of Roebourne by its October council meeting with a detailed design to be ready by early next year. The design phase will also include consultation with the community. Earlier in the year, mining giant Rio Tinto committed $9.4m towards the project with an application for additional funding through the Royalties for Regions program expected to be considered this month. Shire of Roebourne Councillors also approved a

business plan at the August 19 council meeting for the development of the Karratha Airport over the next 10-years. The business plan expects that the airport will generate $81m in revenue over the next decade, while development plans, including the upgrade of the airport’s terminal and potentially its runway, will require the Shire to take out $24m in loans. The Airport Terminal Upgrade, in particular, will be a major project that will create space for more retail shops and amenities and allow more flights, including the potential for international carriers, to visit Karratha.

Philippine-born artist Waling Gorospe painted the portrait and entered it into the recent Cossack Art Awards, where it caught the eye of a number of Councillors, who then voted to buy the piece at the Shire’s August 19 council meeting. The Councillors said the beauty of the painting and the high esteem in which the community held Violet meant that it was appropriate to use Shire money to purchase it. However, not all Councillors agreed.

As the Cossack Award’s major sponsor, the Shire already acquires the Best Overall Artwork each year – this year taking home the winning painting by Perth artist Lesley Munro, called The Way Back. With that in mind, Councillors Evette Smeathers and John Lally were among those to vote against the purchase. Although agreeing that the painting was a beautiful piece, Smeathers and Lally were worried that it could set a precedent for future purchases of artworks that are outside the Shire’s budget. Yet such debate is hardly likely to bother Violet, who spends more time painting her own paintings than worrying about appearing in them.

American company Aurora Algae’s plans to create animal feed, biodiesel and Omega-3 nutrition supplements in Karratha appear to have been scrapped in favour of the company’s more recent test site in Geraldton.

His comments come as a blow to those hoping to see the Pilbara’s resource driven economy diversify into other industries.

Aurora had spent two-years developing its algae ponds in a test facility in Karratha before announcing that it planned to relocate to an $86m commercial facility in the town’s Maitland Industrial Estate. Premier Colin Barnett even visited the site in February to contribute $10m in funding for a pipeline to deliver seawater to the site. However, Aurora’s chief executive officer Greg Bafalis told the ABC that high business costs have now put the company off the Pilbara. “It’s a fly-in, fly-out culture so it’s a very, very expensive labour market,” Bafalis told the ABC. “For us, we’d like to have a very local labor force and we’d like to be a community that’s a bit more stable and not so volatile.” Bafalis also said that the Pilbara’s high temperatures were not ideal for the project.

Big names from the Nationals party toured through the North West last week, with Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Hon Warren Truss MP, Senate candidate David Wirrpanda and WA candidate for Durack Shane Van Styn visiting projects in Dampier Harbour and Mermaid Sound last Thursday August 15.

Van Styn has praised Bhagwan Marine as an example of a succesful small business in Durack.

The tour is part of Van Styn’s campaign to win the seat of Durack in the coming federal election, which became vacant with the retirement of Barry Haase. Van Styn announced this week a series of policies that promise to make running a small business easier, including cutting company tax, reducing red tape and dedicating Parliamentary sitting time to focus on small business. “Small business needs a voice,” Van Styn said. “I don’t want that voice to be lost in the major party rooms, which are dominated by city MPs who have no idea about the challenges and the opportunities out here in the regions.” While in Dampier, Van Styn spent time on board a Bhagwan Marine vessel with Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Transport,

Kicking off from Exmouth on Saturday August 24 the Bash will travel over 2,600km visiting Onslow, Carnarvon, Kalbarri, Geraldton, Jurien Bay and many mystery stops, before finishing

in Perth on Saturday August 31. Along the way, the Variety ‘Bashers’ will present much-needed grants of educational and recreational equipment to individuals and regional community groups to help WA kids in need. Team Thunderbirds, or T6, from Karratha committed to raising $10,000 for Variety WA this year, but they have already raised $12,500.

Gonzo Flanigan, Richard Jubb and Leeroy Peddler are the Thunderbirds and are looking forward to their second year on the road for variety WA. “It is a good charity and they donate lots to needy kids,” said Apex life member Gonzo. “It’s a lot of fun too and we hope to raise as much as we can get.”

The Bashers, with their old, colourful cars and fun costumes will have many stop offs on the way, celebrating with themed nights such as circus, lone ranger and wine nights. The event was created to encourage positive networking activity, cultural learning and interaction between women from different Aboriginal language groups including Ngarluma, Yinjibarndi, Kuruma, Marduthuneria and Banjima and non-Indigenous women. In 2013, a completely female, Indigenous committee is coordinating the Strong Beautiful

Women’s Gathering. The committee has strived to seek services and entertainment from Indigenous women, and contracts have been awarded to Indigenous businesswomen. A highlight of the evening will be the announcement of the winner of the community awards. Community members from around the Shire of Roebourne have been busy nominating women who they believe best represents one of 10 categories. The prizes for the community awards are donated from local businesses that support the event. The not-for-profit community event is funded with sponsorship from Rio Tinto, the North West Shelf project, WBHO and other supportive businesses. Government scientists are hoping to hold more community days after their marine open day in Exmouth attracted plenty of interest earlier this month. More than 250 community members attended the August 9 open day by taking a tour of the Australian Institute of Marine Science’s Solander research vessel and sitting in on evening talks by leading scientists. With the Solander research vessel being filled with hi-tech gadgets and scientists giving talks on whale sharks, dolphins and jellyfish, AIMS scientist Ben Radford said audiences were captivated. “It demonstrated that the community is really interested in the research that goes on at Ningaloo and shows me as a scientist that we have an onus to inform people of the work that we are doing,” Radford said. “There was really an appetite for that knowledge.” The open day comes as increased efforts are made to raise the profile of Ningaloo

and other Western Australian reefs. Despite the size, diversity and beauty of Ningaloo Reef, it still lags far behind Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef in reputation and the volume of scientific research done on its corals. However Radford said AIMS as a government-funded organisation was working hard to share its research with the public, particularly through the founding of the Ningaloo Atlas publication and website. The Atlas compiles and references scientific research about Ningaloo Reef so that researchers and members of the public can access it for free. Radford said the public can use the Atlas to find out information, such as where are turtles hatching and what is happening in shark research. “The Atlas is to try and bridge this gap, this kind of perception that people come to this lovely Ningaloo region, they do research and then they walk away and where does all their research go,” Radford said. He said the August 9 marine open day, attended by members

of the defence, oil and gas and tourist industries as well as the University of Western Australia Vice Chancellor, was another way to bridge the gap. Radford said that the Solaner’s hi-tech work, in particular, attracted the public’s interest. He said the vessel had enabled scientists to use multibeam sonar to map the ocean floor in 3D and discover sponge gardens in the darker, deeper waters. The gardens are significant on a worldwide scale for their biodiversity, yet were hardly known to science just one decade ago. Radford said the public were also fascinated by the baited remote-sensing cameras that scientists use under water to record types of fish on the reef as well as their sizes. “The Solander even has under water robots,” Radford said. “You can send them on missions and they go off and do specific tasks so the public were really fascinated by the cool hitech stuff that the boat allows us to get involved in.”

Perth gallery snaps up Pilbara painting by Loreen Samson By Ben Leahy Roebourne artist Loreen Samson has once again had a leading gallery pick up one of her paintings after the University of Western Australia purchased her “First Dawn” piece earlier this month. The painting shows trains pulling iron ore carriages across the canvas, an image

that Loreen said saddens her. “The painting is about the knowledge of our ancestors that I see is taken away everyday through the carriages that roll past,” she said. “It is a story [that is of concern to] all nationalities not just Indigenous people because the country is the healing place and what I see is so sad.”

But while the image might be a sad one, it didn’t stop Barbara Bynder, the deputy director of UWA’s Berndt Museum from falling instantly in love it. Loreen did not even get the chance to put the painting on display as Barbara saw it while it was still being catalogued and immediately dialled Perth. “She loved it and rang her

boss and said this is the one that we want,” Loreen said. Yet recognition for her artwork is nothing new to Loreen. Numerous Australian galleries have purchased her paintings, and she most recently won the WA Indigenous Artist prize at July’s Cossack Art Awards.

Burrup Peninsula artwork to feature in major Sydney gallery By Ben Leahy The Pilbara’s Traditional Owners will talk about their deep relationship to the Burrup Peninsula and its rock art in a digital art installation to screen in Sydney next month. The installation at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art titled Craig Walsh: Embedded is centred on interviews with elders, including Tim Douglas, Wilfred Hicks and Toostie Daniels, as they sing traditional songs and talk about the meaning of the Burrup’s rock art. Artist Craig Walsh filmed the interviews in 2012 and then projected the elder’s faces onto Burrup landscapes as a way of highlighting their connection to the land. The resulting images will now screen in Sydney on a series of TV monitors that are

synchronised so that one after the other the faces of the elders emerge from the darkness and speak. “[By projecting their faces onto the landscape it] is a very solid metaphor for the relationship these people have to this place – they are inseparable,” Walsh said. Walsh hopes the artworks help generate greater awareness of the Burrup’s rich Indigenous heritage among East Coast Australians. “There is a lot of fascination and commentary about the Pilbara because of its vast usage,” Walsh said “And art has this opportunity to pose questions or reflect on a place in a way which is not overtly political – it can look at the realities of the place and people who exist there.” During a pre-launch screening of the exhibition at

the Roebourne amphitheatre on August 16, Walsh also talked about the bond he made with the Pilbara’s elders. The elders even spoke about sacred and culturally sensitive topics on camera. That video footage will not form part of the Sydney exhibition and instead will be handed over to local Indigenous groups to be archived. “The elders built up that much trust in [Walsh] that they allowed other things to be recorded, which weren’t to go anywhere except for our archives and for us to keep for history,” Ron Critchley the chief executive officer of the Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation said. Local elders and members of the Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation, such as Critchley, will now fly to Sydney for the opening of the exhibition.

Velocity Village, located on Cherratta Road in Karratha’s Industrial Estate, was built in early 2011 and purchased later the same year by the NLV Group. WASO makes music for the Pilbara A string quartet from the West Australian Symphony Orchestra will visit Karratha, Roebourne and Onslow this week to perform free community concerts and classroom presentations as part of WASO on the Road’s regional tour. Rachael Kirk on viola, Cerys Tooby and Rebecca Glorie on violin and Fotis Skordas on cello are the WASO quartet who will spend five days conducting music workshops at schools and performing for the community. The musicians will also give classroom presentations at schools in Karratha, Roebourne and Onslow aimed at developing students’ interest in classical music and providing young people with the opportunity to try out the instruments. These presentations will also give the students an opportunity

to engage directly with the musicians through interactive workshop activities. WASO Chief Executive Craig Whitehead said WASO on the Road is part of WASO’s Education and Community program. “[The program] demonstrates a commitment by the Orchestra to share the joy of music with all

By Tamara Binamat There were red faces and sweaty brows around Point Samson last weekend as the Pilbara celebrated its first chilli festival Saturday August 17. The Point Samson Community Association held the event to offer community groups a fundraising opportunity. The chilli festival also incorporated a home brew competition, sponsored by Matsos Brewery. Community groups entered a chilli dish or a home brew beer and offered members of the public samples of the dishes. Guests enjoyed traditional chillis along with jerkys, chilli crabs and curries from around 50 entrants. With $1,000 up for grabs for the winner of the chilli dish and $1,000 to the winner of the home brew the stakes were high, but Carla and Brad Tindale took out the top spot in the home brew category with their Mexican strong beer, a “Cervesa”. Chilli-lovers then kicked back to live music in the park as Dudley Nightshades performed live until late.

By Tamara Binamat Award-winning, internationally-recognised alternative rock group Birds of Tokyo are flying back to Karratha to headline the Red Earth Arts Festival’s finale concert. The concert will be held on the evening of September 21 and Birds of Tokyo will be supported by indie-pop band San Cisco. Birds of Tokyo, one of Australia’s hottest exports, has a unique link to our country town, with founding member Adam Weston a former resident before hitting the big time and getting a home in Los Angeles in America. “In the last five years plenty has happened but recently we’ve been back and forth from America doing a lot of writing, focusing on new material,” Weston said. The five-piece released their fourth studio album March Flies in March, which Weston said has a sound that can’t be replicated. “It’s more hard-hitting but in a different way,” he said. “It’s a lot more wider and atmospheric. “There was definitely a conscious effort to have a bigger sound but that doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be faster or more aggressive.” And ‘The Birds’ are excited to unleash the new material at REAF. “Considering we were holed up in a studio for so long and we’ve spent so much time overseas we’re really embracing the opportunity to play shows in Australia again,” Weston said. “Crowds up there are more enthusiastic and probably scream louder. “When we get a chance to tour regionally we always try to make sure we can make it work. “We’re so happy that we’ve got an opportunity to head up to Karratha and showcase March Flies.”

The Festival takes its name from Mount Nameless/Jarndunmunha, meaning ‘place of rock wallabies’ in the language of the Eastern Guruma people. This week’s health condition in focus: Anxiety A tight feeling grips your chest, your breath quickens and becomes shallow. It feels like the walls are closing in around you, it’s claustrophobic and you want to escape. Your heart begins racing and you are feeling lightheaded. Palms become sweaty and your whole body is tense. Why is your body fighting against you? If you are feeling these symptoms, you are not alone. They are common emotions and symptoms of someone in the grips of anxiety, the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric condition. The autonomic nervous system acts as a control centre from our brain, its job is to regulate internal organs and glands. It shoots off into two parallel branches; the first one is the Parasympathetic, which controls our ‘rest-and-digest’ activities such as digestion and organ

maintenance. The second branch is the Sympathetic, this is our ‘fight-orflight’ response, or the survival and stress response. In anxiety it seems that there is an over stimulation of the Sympathetic nervous system. It can start with a stressful event, or by negative thoughts and for some it seems to strike for no reason at all. Dietary imbalances and lifestyle factors have a huge part to play in bringing the branches of your autonomic nervous system back into harmony. Below are just a few of the measures that need to be addressed. Reduce or avoid caffeine: Caffeine causes adrenalin to be released, which is the key hormone also released in the fight-or-flight response. Hence the reason it keeps us feeling alert, but also encouraging the sympathetic nervous system pathway.

Avoid processed sugars: These are also over-stimulating and can increase other symptoms commonly felt in someone suffering from anxiety such as insomnia or broken sleep. As a double negative sugar uses up a large portion of your precious magnesium, which is our key relaxation mineral. Increase magnesium: Top food sources include nuts, seeds, dark green leafy vegetables, seafood, legumes and cacao. Eat these foods most days. Someone suffering chronic anxiety or frequent attacks may benefit from supplementation. Seek advice first. Avoid nervous system disruptors: Alcohol, illicit drugs and synthetic drugs as well as some over the counter medications can greatly interfere with the brains natural chemistry. Minimise unnecessary stress, both physical and emotional: Opt for gentle exercise such as walking, swimming and yoga where the deep breathing

involved in these activities helps calm your internal environment. Try to avoid over committing yourself to social and work commitments, which adds an oftensubconscious stress.

Miners donate $5m to sick kids Local iron ore mining company BHP Billiton has announced a contribution of $5 million to build a new, much larger, Ronald McDonald House in Perth. The home-away-fromhome for seriously ill children and their families will provide much-needed support for the Western Australian community, particularly regional families, who need to travel to Perth to receive specialist care. The $29 million customdesigned house is expected to be open by October 2015.

It will be built alongside the new Perth Children’s Hospital, providing a supportive and comfortable environment for families to stay in for the duration of their child’s treatment. The capital investment is made possible through BHP Billiton’s Community Development Program, which contributed almost $60 million last financial year to health, education, Indigenous development and community infrastructure initiatives. Scientist hopes community members will contribute to sea turtle research ‘Citizen scientists’ can help protect endangered green sea turtles by observing and gathering information about them, according to a PhD student from The University of Western Australia’s Oceans Institute. Turtles are in danger around the world, and, in some countries, turtles and their eggs are hunted for food. Pollution indirectly harms them and many die in fishing nets, while human development often causes habitat loss by eliminating nesting beaches and damaging their feeding grounds. The UWA’s Julia Reisser – along with colleagues in Brazil – has recently published a study in the prestigious

journal Marine Biology in which she and her colleagues show that we can discover important information about sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) just by looking at them. “Several high-tech methods such as genetic analysis and satellite tracking are providing useful information regarding sea turtle ecology,” Ms Reisser said. “However, observational approaches, extensively used by naturalists in early ecology, still have the potential to fill gaps in our marine ecological knowledge.” Her team showed that observational records of turtles produced a number of important finds. They identified, for instance, that shallow waters (0 - 5 metres) are a critical

feeding habitat for juvenile green turtles and described how, where, and what these reptiles are feeding upon when in the waters of the marine reserve, Arvoredo, in southern Brazil. Reisser said similar programs could be used in areas such as Western Australia’s North West coast. “Underwater observations such as the ones described in this study could be incorporated to other research programs such Citizen Science projects that involve diving activities,” Reisser said. “It could help deliver better management plans to protect sea turtle populations.” In their study, Reisser’s team recorded

a variety of interesting turtle behaviours and food preferences, some of it gathered during more than 1,500 scuba and snorkelling diving sessions. Like other sea turtles, green turtles – which live in tropical and sub-tropical oceans – migrate long distances between feeding grounds and hatching beaches. Females crawl out on beaches, dig nests and lay eggs during the night. Later, hatchlings emerge and scramble into the water. Their in-water behaviour and distribution are still mysterious to scientists and some call turtles’ first years of life “the lost years” due to difficulties tracking their movements.

The Great Crested Grebe is the largest member of the grebe family found in the Old World, with some larger species residing in the Americas. They measure 46–51cm long with a 59–73cm wingspan and weigh 0.9 to 1.5kg. It is an excellent swimmer and diver and pursues its fish prey underwater. The adults are unmistakable in summer with head and neck decorations. In winter, this is whiter than most grebes, with white above the eye, and a pink bill. It is the largest European grebe. The young are distinctive because their heads are striped black and white. They lose these markings when they become adults. The Great Crested Grebe breeds in vegetated areas of freshwater lakes. It is resident in the milder west of its range, but migrates from the colder regions. It winters on freshwater lakes and reservoirs or the coast.

Usually two eggs are laid, and the fluffy, striped young grebes are often carried on the adult’s back. In a clutch of two or more hatchlings, male and female grebes will each identify their favourite chick, which they alone will care for and teach Unusually, young grebes are capable of swimming and diving almost from the moment they hatch. The adults teach these skills to their young by carrying them on their back and diving, leaving the chicks to float on the surface, before re-emerging a few feet away so that the chicks may swim back onto them. The Crested Grebe feeds mainly on fish but also on small crustaceans, insects and frogs. This species was hunted almost to extinction in the United Kingdom in the 19th century for its head plumes, which were used to decorate hats and ladies’ undergarments. The RSPB was set up to help protect this species, which is again a common sight.

Professional dance ﬂoor to add a spring to the step of Pilbara artists Pilbara performers will soon be able to dance on a professionalstandard floor after an enormous fundraising and sponsorship drive enabled the purchase of a Harlequin Cascade floor from Sydney. Used by many professional dance companies, the Harlequin Cascade floor is already purchased and on its way to the Pilbara for use during September’s 2013 Red Earth Arts Festival. Local dance groups Ovation Performance Company, Terre Rouge Ballet and DeckArts will all benefit from the professional flooring as will the Pilbara’s now famous Men of the Red Earth and visiting artists Ochre. For Ovation’s founders, Megan Wood-Hill and Leah Nagy, raising the funds to purchase a new non-slip vinyl floor has been a long running passion after the previous floor in Karratha’s Walkington Theatre was destroyed in a flood in the building in 2011. “It is particularly pertinent now that we are all having to perform in spaces that are not purpose built for dance shows, with some [group’s] even needing to build their own stages for

annual concerts,” Megan said. Ovation’s fundraising committee has worked with the Chevron Community Spirit grant in 2012 and the Shire of Roebourne and utilized personal donations and the prize money it won for its FeNaCling Float Parade to secure the funding to purchase the dance floor. Longtime arts supporters, Vicki and Peter Long also made a personal contribution of $1,000 towards the floor, as did Gigi Richarson. “Our donation towards bettering dance and providing creative opportunity is just a small token of our appreciation for what Megan is doing for the youth of Karratha and the world of art in general,” Vicki said. When not being used by local dance groups, the community will be able to access the $10,000 floor at the Catholic Parish Hall on Welcome Road. The fishing from the shore has been a little quieter this year for some anglers with more dedication required to try and catch that favoured fish. Winter locals have reported the bites to be fewer and many anglers have had to change tactics in certain areas. However, other areas, such as the marina, have been more productive and shown an increase in the number of fish and species for various anglers. The boating scene has continued to shine, and this week we have local young angler Grace Lawson with a beaming smile from a fabulous day out with her parents. Grace caught this great rankin cod, along with another red emperor and several other fish on a glass-calm day off Exmouth. Grace out-fished her Dad, which we believe was much to her Dad’s disgust and her mother’s delight!

Well done Grace. Grace is entered in the monthly Shimano fishing comp along with several others for August. Cobia have been prevalent in the gulf lately, as many of them travel through this time of year with manta rays and whales. On a rare occasion, you can see whole schools of them in the shallow waters of the gulf. It is coming up to the time of year when we see many large schools of fish in the gulf feeding on bait. You can get large schools of bludger trevally that can be thick from the surface to the ocean floor in 15m of water. It is amazing to see your sounder, not to mention the action in the water. Of course, there can be acres of schools of long tail tuna, mack tuna and leaping bonito as well, which are easily found by following the schools of birds. With all this activity, there are sure to be a few sharks about too,

not to mention mackerel. Around the Muiron islands you can get large schools of shark mackerel, which can be seen carving up the water surface. Sailfish is another species that comes in to the gulf chasing bait in Spring, along with a small amount of black marlin. Our waters are very healthy, and when you get a day out to see some of these amazing sights, you realise how fortunate we are in Exmouth. The next upcoming event at the Exmouth Game Fishing Club is the Ultra Light competition. This event has a high junior participation and takes a lot of patience and skill from dedicated anglers. Most of the species mentioned in the above paragraph can be targeted during this competition, and we are sure that many of the participants will be getting out in the next few weeks’ lead-up to practice catching fish on light line.

Nickol 2 were the biggest winners in last Saturday’s Karratha District Junior Soccer 13s competition as they booted nine-goals-tonil in a dominant showing over Nickol 3. Congratulations to Banjo McCarthy on scoring five goals in this match. Nickol 1 also had a comfortable win over Salt, while in the afternoon match played at Dampier, Glory 2 proved too strong for a depleted Dampier team. In Saturdays 17s match in Dampier, Glory ran out the winners over Dampier by the narrowest of margins in what was a hard fought match right to the referee’s final whistle. Well played to both teams.

With three rounds of the home and away season left, the teams for the finals in both age groups are yet to be decided – so good luck to all teams over the coming weeks. Training brings results for Round 5 mountain bike winners By Mark Smith With five of eight races completed in the Burrup Mountain Bike Club Championship, the cream is starting to rise to the top as Richie Chipman extended his run of wins in the Elite category. With the field coming back after a two-month break in racing, 49 eager riders joined Richie at the course start line at the Karratha Vistor’s Centre as the day’s winners finally saw reward for all the effort they’ve been putting in. Consistent early morning mountain bike rides and Saturday morning group road rides all add up.

And for Richie Chipman regular commutes to work on the Burrup Peninsula translated into a 10 second win over Tristan Wood-Hill in the Elite category after a perfectly measured race. Chipman saved his attack until the last half lap of the 5.76km, four-lap course. In a case of the cream rising, Wood-Hill, a strong rider in past seasons, also made a welcome return to the podium after battling illness earlier in the season. Simon Blyth made light work of the rocky water tank hill to win the Expert category by two minutes over newcomer Reece Greenem. Steven Macleod continued on his winning way to win

the sport category, although Rodney Gethin had wind in his sails to finish in second place. Fresh from the Gibb River Challenge mountain bike race, mum Kellie Maccan raised a few eyebrows with a convincing win in the ladies category. Triathlete Tania Neeson pushed hard only to get close up and personal with the Pilbara rocks. William Gethin again won the juniors but only by three seconds over Dylan Muller.
