Newman man dies in 4WD rollover

Pajero wagon rolled over on an unsealed road near Parnpajinya Aboriginal community, north-east of Newman.

The vehicle landed on its wheels but later caught fire when the other occupants in the car tried to drive it to get medical assistance.

A female passenger was flown to Perth to have surgery on her jaw, while another man suffered minor injuries after he was thrown from the vehicle.

Police charged a 23-yearold Newman man with traffic offences unrelated to the death of the 25-year-old.

Investigators would like to hear from anyone who has information regarding the crash, or who saw the unregistered Pajero being driven in the Newman area on Saturday, March 1.

Four-star focal point coming to South Hedland

By Ben Leahy South Hedland’s first four-star hotel is expected to be completed and open for business by the end of this year.

The 120-room, five-storey hotel will overlook South Hedland’s town square and be built by developer Hickory Group using modular pieces constructed off-site to save time.

Regional Development and Lands Minister Terry Redman launched the project on March 1 and said the hotel was key to revitalising South Hedland into a modern town.

“The hotel will become a focal point for South Hedland and will include a restaurant and conference facilities overlooking the new main street and town square,” Mr Redman said.

“The project will also stimulate tourism and increase employment opportunities in the town.”

Architects Fender Katsalidis designed the hotel and have

previously designed projects, such as Melbourne’s Eureka Tower, one of the world’s tallest residential buildings.

Mr Redman said the Hickory Group would fabricate 90 per cent of the hotel off-site using its modular construction method.

“This will deliver the hotel up to 50 per cent faster than traditional building methods and at a lower cost, while minimising material and energy waste,” he said.

Hickory has used modular construction in several Pilbara developments in the past 12 months, including a Port Hedland apartment block that went up in four days and a six-storey residential building in South Hedland.

The hotel will be located on the corner of Wise Tce and McLarty Boulevard and face onto South Hedland’s town square and amphitheatre.

Construction is expected to begin in April with the hotel open for business by December.

Railway museum is back on track

Karratha’s railway museum had seemingly run out of steam since its closure to the public more than 18 months ago.

The 6 Mile Museum’s eight locomotives, which were among the earliest trains to operate on the Pilbara’s first five railway lines, now sit idly on rusted tracks.

It is a sad sight for Bob Vanselow, a former railway worker and member of the Pilbara Railways Historical Society, given that he remembers the 1970s and ‘80s when the society would regularly fire up the locos and head off on community trips.

While it is hard to imagine today, the society was allowed to share the line with iron ore trains and ran up to 22 community trips as far afield as Tom Price and Pannawonica in their busiest years.

A favourite was the annual Christmas trip on the Pendennis Castle steam engine.

Tom Price and Pannawonica residents eagerly awaited the Pendennis Castle’s visit and the chance to steam into Karratha to do their Christmas shopping.

And by the time the train turned for home, it felt a bit like returning in Santa’s sleigh, according to Bob. “The big luggage van we had (behind the steam engine) would be filled to the roof with trampolines and stuff they bought around the shops in Karratha,” Bob, who now lives in Victoria, said.

“When we got back to Tom Price at midnight, we would have the floodlights on while we handed everything out.

“You have to understand, the Pilbara was very isolated in the 1970s … the sealed road didn’t even go through from Perth to Dampier back then.”

The Tom Price Christmas run is just one of many stories Bob remembers of the 6 Mile Museum.

And while he had been worried they would be lost to the Pilbara, he is now hopeful they will be preserved thanks to plans to reinvigorate the museum and turn it into an interpretative centre.

Bob said planning was still in the early stages after he and other members of the Pilbara Historical Railway Society met with representatives from Rio Tinto, the Shire of Roebourne and the Pilbara Development Commission last month.

But it is hoped the museum will contain indoor and outdoor displays about the history of the Pilbara railways as well as their current operations.

Bob said in almost all cases, the locomotives now in the museum were used to construct the Pilbara’s earliest railway lines before being transferred to other duties once the lines were complete.

The Pendennis used to win on a whisker in front of Flying Scotsman, although it was very competitive.

“It is a collection that belongs in the Pilbara and is part of the Pilbara’s history – we worked hard in the ‘80s to collect all the locos,” Bob said.

He also said he was willing to share his quirky stories with the future museum.

These include the tale of how one of the museum’s locomotives had the number 007 painted on it and thus came to be called Mabel after James Bond’s love interest in the spy’s first-ever movie.

Then there was the story of how the Historical Society helped ease an industrial dispute between residents of Cape Lambert and Pannawonica by ferrying the two groups along the rails to patch things up over a community lunch.

But the museum’s most famous stories centre on the Pendennis Castle steam engine, built in the UK in 1924.

1978 by Hamersley Iron for its employees and their families and was permanently returned to the UK for restoration work in 2000, as by that time there were few qualified steam engine drivers left in Karratha.

But before it left Australian shores, the Historical Society organised a reunion with the Pendennis’s great rival the Flying Scotsman.

The Pendennis Castle and Flying Scotsman had been rival steam engines in the UK in the 1920s, where their operators and engineers competed to see which train was the fastest and most efficient.

“And the Pendennis used to win on a whisker in front of Flying Scotsman, although it was very competitive,” Bob said.

“Even though Flying Scotsman was a bigger and better-known locomotive, the Pendennis Castle was more efficient.”

So when the Flying Scotsman was brought to Australia to tour the country for the 1988 bicentennial, the Historical Society took the Pendennis down to Perth for a reunion with its old foe in 1989.

The two engines then toured WA together, going as far as Kalgoorlie.

“It was such a great time to see them together again because they had been apart for a long time,” Bob said.

Now Bob hopes the two engines might one day be reunited as part of a photo exhibit at a newly revitalised 6 Mile Museum.

Record numbers sign up to protect rural pharmacies

By Ben Leahy A petition calling on the federal government to help protect community pharmacies, particularly those in remote areas, was presented to Parliament last week with a record number of signatures.

The petition was lodged in opposition to government plans to bring forward a policy to reduce the amount it pays pharmacies for medicines on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia said the changes may force some pharmacies to reduce services, cut jobs or even close their doors.

Towns such as Exmouth and Port Hedland are among 24 towns in the Durack electorate with just one pharmacy that the guild said would be most impacted by changes to the PBS. Exmouth Pharmacy managing pharmacist Annette Bush said the changes would make it hard for her pharmacy to make money from its dispensary and

that it might be forced to cut its extra services.

“Every few months, the government is dropping the amount that they will pay for prescriptions and this is putting pressure on our business.

“Our professional fees are being cut ... to the point that a pharmacy that is primarily dependent on their dispensary and traditional services certainly will be under threat.”

Ms Bush said the Exmouth pharmacy served not only the town, but also sent out medicines daily to remote cattle stations and even Coral Bay, 160km to the south.

“In previous years, we have serviced Onslow, which is 400km away by road – they have more recently got their own little pharmacy, which will probably be under threat with the changes.”

Ms Bush said because Exmouth had few doctors and doctor’s appointments were regularly booked out, local residents often came to her pharmacy for advice.

She said these services were provided for free and could be put under threat.

Under the PBS, the government sets an affordable price for common prescription medicines that customers with Medicare cards pay.

It then reimburses pharmacies for the difference in the Medicare price and that which the pharmacy paid the wholesaler.

However, under the government changes, prices from the wholesalers for many medicines would be negotiated at lower rates.

Yet the changes have met with opposition as a fiveweek campaign in pharmacies across Australia resulted in 1.2 million Australians signing the “Pharmacies Under Threat” petition.

It is the largest petition presented to federal parliament with the secondmost supported petition concerning beer prices being lodged in 2000 and attracting nearly 800,000 signatures.

“Petroleum … represented only a slight sales value increase of one per cent on the previous year,” Mr Marmion said. “(This) was due to Pluto LNG coming on stream and countering falls in the sales volumes and total values of crude oil and LPG.” The minister said this was further evidence that the resources sector was the backbone of the West Australian economy and was good indication of how strongly the industry was going.

Western Australia’s mineral and petroleum sector reached a new record value of $113.8 billion last year, breaking the previous record of $108 billion set in 2011.

The Pilbara continues to lead the way, with iron ore still the state’s most valuable export.

It accounted for $68 billion, or 76 per cent, of the mineral sector’s total sales, with continuing strong demand increasing the quantity sold last year by 16 per cent, to 556 million tonnes.

Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Marmion said the state’s new record was an increase of more than $11 billion, or 15 per cent, compared to 2012.

“The depreciation of the Australian dollar in 2013 has been a key factor in boosting the value of WA’s mineral and petroleum exports … (and has helped) to counter the fall in commodity prices during the year,” Mr Marmion said.

“The value of sales was also assisted by increases in some of the volumes of commodities sold.”

The minister said gold was the second most valuable mineral commodity, with total sales of $8.7 billion, representing 10 per cent of total mineral sales.

Dampier Art Awards add colour to local life

Some of the highlights from last year’s awards.

Organisers are calling for artists to begin working on their entries for the annual Dampier Art Awards, which this year features a new youth category and the theme Colour My Life.

Artists entering the competition can use a literal interpretation on Colour My Life to perhaps capture an activity, place or person, or they might try to capture the theme through a feeling or created atmosphere.

With last year’s competition attracting 46 entries, organisers are hoping even more Shire of Roebourne residents enter this year’s event.

Entries open on May 5 but organisers are also encouraging participants to begin putting pencil, paintbrush or pastel to paper now so they get their artworks in before the May 16 deadline.

All entries will then be displayed in an exhibit that will run from June 1-8.

There are six categories in this year’s awards, including the Dampier Art Award theme – Colour My Life, Pilbara landscape, portrait, abstract, three dimensional art and a youth division for 16 to 18-year-olds.

Crawford Realty fined for lodging bonds late

By Ben Leahy Crawford Realty of South Hedland has been fined $9500 and ordered to pay costs of $970 for the late lodging of customer bonds with the Bond Administrator.

The company pleaded guilty on February 28 to 21 charges of failing to lodge bonds “as soon as practicable”, as required by the Residential Tenancies Act at the time of the offences.

The Act was changed on July 1 last year to require agents to lodge bonds as soon as practicable and within 14 days of receipt.

Lawyers for Consumer Protection told the court that Crawford Realty had taken between 15 and 60 days to lodge 21 security bonds totalling more than $170,000. The bonds were collected between March and August 2012.

Protection Anne Driscoll said real estate agents and property managers need to review their office procedures to ensure speedy lodgement of bonds.

“It’s essential that tenants’ funds are safe and secure and lodged with the Bond Administrator as soon as possible,” Ms Driscoll said.

“Taking many weeks or even months to do so is unacceptable and is a breach of the law.

“The appropriate lodgment and security of tenant’s bond moneys is an issue that Consumer Protection takes seriously.

“Agents and property managers need to keep their business in order so they don’t run the risk of being prosecuted.”

New centre to process rescouces industry waste

By Ben Leahy Cleanaway will soon begin construction of a $17.5 million Karratha facility to process waste and recyclable materials from the Pilbara’s resources industry.

The waste management group’s general manager, Gavin Denness, said the facility would collect and process large commercial quantities of solid and liquid waste.

“The planned facility will ensure local construction and demolition waste can be processed closer to where it is being generated, thereby reducing the greenhouse gas emissions associated with transporting the waste approximately 1200km from the Pilbara to Perth,” Mr Denness said.

Mr Denness said Western Australian property and construction group Pindan had won the tender to construct the facility due to their experience working in the Karratha region.

A Western Australian research team have won a major innovation award for their work in helping to improve offshore oil and gas pipeline designs.

The team made up of University of Western Australia and oil and gas industry researchers was awarded the 2014 AIRG Medal for Australasian Major Industry Technological Innovation after building a facility that simulates underwater conditions during a tropical cyclone.

The project, known as the O-Tube program, not only has potential application in the Pilbara

and North West oil and gas industry but is also attracting interest internationally.

Winthrop professor John Dell from the UWA’s engineering, computing and mathematics faculty said it has the potential to reduce costs for Australian oil and gas companies.

“The O-Tube program uses engineering solutions to optimise the competitiveness of industry while ensuring the safety of our offshore infrastructure,” Prof Dell said.

The facility built by the researchers works by rapidly circulating 60 tonnes of water inside oval flumes to create

extreme underwater wave and current conditions.

The world-first nature of the project helped it pick up the AIRG innovation award, which is presented annually to the industrial researchers producing the most outstanding work in Australasia.

The project was a joint collaboration between the UWA and Woodside, Chevron, Wood Group Kenny and Atteris.

“This is a practical example of how embracing technology can achieve real cost savings for oil and gas companies,” said Shaun Gregory, Woodside senior vice president of health, safety, environment and technology.

Set in a mythic New York City and spanning more than a century, “Winter’s Tale” is a story of miracles, crossed destinies, and the age-old battle between good and evil.

The University of Western Australia’s earth and marine sciences faculty – and its studies on the World Heritagelisted waters of Ningaloo Reef and the North West – has been ranked among the world’s top 40 marine research institutions.

The QS World University Rankings by subject put the UWA’s earth and marine sciences department at 39th in the world.

UWA vice-chancellor professor Paul Johnson said the university’s marine research team also boasted two of the

world’s top 250 academics in renowned ocean researcher Winthrop professor Carlos Duarte and coral reef expert Malcom McCulloch.

Both men were among the world’s top academics based on how often their studies have been cited in articles by other researchers over the past 20 years.

“It demonstrates that our strategy to attract world-class staff to strengthen our leading research and teaching profile, and to increase international journal publication of world-quality UWA research is working,” Prof Johnson said.

Skaters ready to kick flip into action

By Ben Leahy Karratha’s disability support services are expanding, with non-government group Empowering People in Communities (Epic) looking to employ more people and gain extra funding.

Epic provides wide-ranging services in the region, including everything from intensive respite care to providing transport for people with disabilities so they can take part in community activities.

Formed by local families in 2012, it also helps people with disabilities apply for government funding and then manages that funding on their behalf.

Epic chief executive Kathy Hough said Pilbara families got together because of concerns many people with disabilities were choosing not to access support services.

She said they wanted to form an organisation that was more responsive to local needs.

“For the families it was really important that they had a (disability services) organisation that was locally governed,” Ms Hough said.

“This region has had the lowest uptake of people accessing services.

“Living in a rural or remote area shouldn’t lead to a lower quality life.”

Epic now provides support to about 50 people in the Shire of Roebourne, including continuous care to about 30 locals.

It has a long waitlist for its services, with another eight locals applying for individual funding packages from the government.

In addition to individual funding on behalf of its clients, Epic is also applying for more direct funding from the government.

The funding will help the group meet extra demand for its services as it opens its new office in Roebourne this month and recruits more carers and staff.

By Ben Leahy Skating novices and experts will have the chance to pop an ollie and learn new skills at a series of free clinics in Karratha and Dampier this week.

Skateboarding Australia, supported by the Shire of Roebourne, will hold classes at the Nickol West skatepark on Wednesday, in Dampier on Thursday and at the Youth Shed on Friday and Saturday.

Ben Bowring from Skateboard Australia said the Streetwise clinics welcome people of all ages and skill levels.

“They are open to first-time skateboarders who have never been on a skateboard in their life – or even seen one – because we bring skateboards, helmets and the equipment to use,” he said.

“But they also cater to people who are already skateboarding and want to improve or develop their skills.”

With funding from the federal government, Ben said Skateboard Australia tours across the country to help kids get active.

Looking to learn from Indian experience

By Ben Leahy Karratha and Roebourne residents are flying to India this week to learn how disadvantaged women living in and around New Delhi are working together to improve their communities.

Central to the Pilbara group’s trip, organised by local disability services provider Empowering People in Communities (Epic) and leaving this Sunday, will be a visit to the Navjyoti Foundation.

The foundation has helped urban and rural women in New Delhi and the neighbouring state of Haryana to develop skills in areas such as governance and micro-finance that enable them to become leaders and solve problems in their communities.

The foundation has also started a community college and business school.

Epic chief executive Kathy Hough recently visited the foundation and said she saw parallels with the Roebourne community.

“What struck me when I was in India was that they weren’t thinking of a government grant or looking for assistance or somebody to come in and solve problems for them,” Ms Hough said.

“Instead, the women were defining the things their community needed and how they should be solved – and they were doing that in a different way to how professionals or the government might come in and do it.”

Ms Hough said she often

saw official reports in which Roebourne people spoke of being “over-consulted”.

“In one of the reports I read, a quote struck me – someone said, ‘We know what the problems are in our community, we live here’,” Ms Hough said.

She said Roebourne people wanted to take charge of their own communities and be supported as they find and solve the problems, rather than have a top-down program brought in from outside.

And that is where Ms Hough thinks the India trip can help.

“I thought, ‘What a wonderful opportunity to go and see it in action’,” she said.

“These women are living in poverty with high levels of domestic violence and poor sanitation – it is not wonderful living conditions – but they are happy and working together to change their communities.”

Ms Hough said she hoped the Karratha and Roebourne community leaders taking part in the trip come home inspired and filled with the confidence to implement change.

With Epic set to open its Roebourne office this month, Ms Hough said it was important that its services were shaped by the people that live there.

“Aboriginal people don’t tend to access as many services, and yet they are twice as likely to develop a disability.

“This is one way to bring together people who have grown up and know the community to help us design the services.”

In addition to the Navjyoti Foundation, the Pilbara group will visit the Australian High Commission in Delhi and meet respected social activist and former high-ranking Indian police officer Kiran Bedi.

Master Builders Awards judging gets underway

By Ben Leahy Master Builders Awards judge Charlie Baggetta arrives in Karratha this week to inspect the towns’ best examples of building work over the past year.

Mr Baggetta will land in Karratha on Tuesday and will be travelling across the Pilbara and

Kimberley over the next fortnight to look at homes and commercial properties as a judge for the regional awards.

It is a role he has undertaken for the past 13 years and one which led to him being awarded life membership of the Master Builders Association in a ceremony in Perth in February.

Master Builders regional manager Dianne Gilleland said Mr Baggetta selflessly gave up his time to visit North West Western Australia.

“Charlie has clocked up more kilometres than you could ever imagine,” Ms Gilleland said. “(He) has faced cyclones, rain, hail and heatwaves, giving freely of his time, while leaving his building company Baggetta Builders and his family for days on end to judge the regions.”

“We can never underestimate the contribution Charlie has made to our industry ... we are all so thrilled that he has been awarded this special recognition (of life membership).”

Karratha will also host a building industry and information night on Tuesday, before it moves to Port Hedland on Wednesday.

Scott Thomson from the Construction Training Fund and Sharren Holt from the Construction and Property Services Industry Skills Council will be key speakers.

Boost your business with a killer elevator pitch

Last month, the Karratha Kats football club hosted the first After Hours business catch-up event for the year, and it was a reminder of how important a successful ‘elevator pitch’ can be.

The After Hours events are run by the Karratha Chamber of Commerce to help local business people connect in an informal environment, and they are a perfect chance to grow your business with a well-timed elevator pitch.

An elevator pitch comes from the idea that you should be able to tell a stranger enough about your business in the space of ride an elevator to leave them hungry for more.

Having a 30-second overview of your business rehearsed in your mind and ready to deliver is invaluable. Imagine, for instance, if your dream customer or potential business partner or the chief executive of an influential company steps into the same elevator as you.

What do you say when they ask the question: “I’ve met you before haven’t I? Remind me again – what do you do?”.

Many people falter or perform badly in this kind of situation, yet you don’t have to be terrified by the thought of delivering your elevator pitch if you follow these tips.

n What do you do Write down who it is your business helps (your target market) and how it helps them solve a problem. n Why you’re different Identify what makes your product or service stand out from the competitors. n Be concise Getting a great elevator pitch down to 30 seconds is not as easy as it sounds. Write and re-writing your pitch until you are left with a concise summary that grabs peoples’ attention. n Be specific Avoid jargon and generic descriptions of what you do. You should be able to explain what you do to a seven-year-old. n What’s in it for me? A person listening to your pitch will ask themselves, ‘What’s in it for me?’.

Your pitch should answer that question quickly and clearly. n Be flexible Be ready to vary your pitch to suit different audiences and situations. Have few different versions of your pitch up your sleeve. For instance, your pitch should sound more casual when chatting over a beer at a barbecue. n Practice makes perfect If you are not confident, practice delivering your elevator pitch in the mirror or to a family member. The more your deliver your pitch, the more confident you will become.

Karratha Senior High School is now ranked among the top 50 secondary schools in Western Australia after its Year 12 students scored top marks in 2013.

The school’s Vocational Education and Training (VET) program, which helps students secure apprenticeships and traineeships, led the way after it was ranked 48th in the state.

Karratha Senior High students were also successful in gaining entry into university, with the school’s median Australian Tertiary Admittance Rank (ATAR) of 69.4 the highest in the Pilbara.

School principal Greg Kelly said 64 per cent of the school’s VET students achieved a nationally accredited Certificate II or higher qualification, which has already helped many of them find employment or further training since they graduated last December.

“This is a significant achievement by the school when comparing our results over the past five years and it reflects the ongoing improvement in academic achievement by students in recent years,” Mr Kelly said.

The school’s strong performance was revealed in February when the government’s School Curriculum and Standards Authority released the statewide Year 12 results.

“With changes announced by the government as to what students are expected to

achieve by the time they leave school at the end of Year 12, we have been able to offer programs that link with the needs of the community and what students wish to achieve,” Mr Kelly said.

“This has led to our students achieving outstanding success.”

He said that nearly all the Karratha Senior High students who applied for university this year secured places in the first round of offers.

MasterChef mum Liliana Battle dropped into Karratha last Wednesday to help local parents fill their child’s lunchbox with alternatives to the Vegemite sandwich.

The Port Hedland resident and former contestant in Channel 10’s hit cooking show led about 20 local mums through simple and healthy food ideas that can be prepared fast.

Among the snacks Liliana made were pasta frittatas, pasta salad, zucchini choc chip muffins, sushi sandwiches, sandwiches on sticks, guacamole with pizza tortilla wedges, trail mix and fruit wands with sweet ricotta dip.

“I’m here to encourage healthy eating with kids because I know mums sometimes get bogged down in the old Vegemite sandwich and it is great to switch it up,” Liliana said.

“It wasn’t MasterChef food, but food kids like – simple ideas to make the food look pretty and get mums and dads reinvigorated.”

Liliana said her workshop focused on encouraging mums and dads to use leftover foods.

“The pasta frittata was a perfect example – pasta from last night mixed up with a bit of vegetables and meat and cheese,” she said.

Karratha mum Kylah Morrison attended the mini MasterChef class with her son Ollie Norman and said it was the simple ideas that stood out.

“The pasta frittata was a good example – so instead of making (a normal) frittata or omelette sized meal, Liliana talked about making it in muffin bite sizes for the kids,” Kylah said.

Kylah was also thankful for help with Ollie as Shire of Roebourne staff looked after the toddlers in attendance while the mums tuned in to Liliana’s cooking class.

The toddlers had fun listening to a reading of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, before they designed their own caterpillars using fruit and vegies.

For Liliana the Karratha workshop is one of many engagements she has been busy with ever since she left the MasterChef kitchen last year.

“I’ve been flat out – I’m catering and writing a book and doing lots of demos like this, which is nice,” Liliana said.

“It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience being on MasterChef … it doesn’t happen to many people so you have to look back and say ‘How lucky was I?’.”

Close shave to support blood cancer research

By Ben Leahy Karratha resident Gronya Bailey will be one of several Pilbara people colouring and shaving their hair to raise money for blood cancer research next weekend.

Blood cancer is Australia’s biggest cause of cancer death after lung cancer, with more than 11,500 diagnosed with a form of the disease each year.

To help find cures and support families battling blood cancer, Ms Bailey will be shaving her head on March 14 as part of the World’s Greatest Shave national fundraiser.

And she won’t be the only one, as World’s Greatest Shave events are also set to be held at Karratha’s Centro shopping centre on March 15 and Doug Talbot Park in Tom Price on March 16.

Ms Bailey said she is taking part because her mum Rita is ill with another form of cancer – breast cancer.

“My mum has been battling breast cancer now for nearly 15 years and has been back on chemotherapy treatment now for almost 12 months,” she said.

“I have seen over the years how the treatment and support for cancerrelated illness is getting better and better, and this shows to me that all the fundraising over the past decade is making a positive impact.”

Ms Bailey hopes to raise $4000 and contribute to the World’s Greatest Shave’s goal of raising more than $2.95 million in Western Australia.

She said many Pilbara people know her mum and dad, who are now living in Perth. “I actually grew up in Karratha from 1976 to ‘89 and my dad, Henry Bailey, built half the town as (he was) the only earthmoving contractor here back then,” Ms Bailey said.

“

I have seen over the years how the treatment and support for cancerrelated illness is getting better and better, and this shows to me that all the fundraising over the past decade is making a positive impact.

“Mum and Dad were very well known around town, and there are quite a lot of locals who still remember them.”

Gronya said she has personally noticed how even chemotherapy has improved over the past 15 years and now causes fewer side effects to patients.

Thanks to ongoing research, more than 80 per cent of children survive acute lymphoblastic leukaemia today compared to 20 per cent a few decades

ago, according to the Leukaemia Foundation.

Despite this, blood cancer remains a devastating disease.

It can affect anyone of any age or health, its treatment can take years as it generally lasts longer than other forms of cancer, and regional patients and their families often have to relocate to be near city hospitals.

With 31 Australians diagnosed with a blood cancer each day, the disease touches many in the North West.

Last week, the Echo ran a story about Barrow Island worker Michael Pedrotti, who is cutting his dreadlocks for the World’s Greatest Shave after his dad survived cancer.

The Echo was also contacted by 15-year-old Georgina Ashworth-Preece from Geraldton, who is shaving her hair in honour of her brother Alex.

Alex passed away almost two years ago, aged 11, from a rare blood cancer usually found in adults.

“Alex was my best friend. I miss him so much,” Georgina said.

“I want to help raise money for research so that other people do not need to suffer from cancer.”

He won the youth intermediate state championship in the 81kg class but gave away 6kg in weight, fighting at 75kg compared to his 81kg opponent.

Peak 1 head boxing coach Mick Hale said the local boys had raw talent and, more importantly, a desire to succeed.

“I’m very proud of their commitment to training and dedicating themselves to becoming state champions,” he said.

Pilbara boxers Luke Morrison and Daniel Stuart beat some of Western Australia’s best fighters to claim state titles in Perth last weekend.

The two boxers represented Wickham’s Peak 1 Boxing Club at the Intermediate and Elite State Boxing Championships on March 1-2.

Point Samson resident Luke Morrison fought in two divisions, first winning the senior intermediate championships in the 91kg-andover class, in which he beat a boxer weighing 104kg.

The 20-year-old, who has only been boxing for a year and a half, backed up the next day to claim a silver against fighters in the elite division in the same weight class.

Glenn Chandler is living in Exmouth and loving the fishing we have on offer up and down the coast.

He really enjoys fishing the shoreline and recently had an epic time with bonefish south of the national park.

Bonefish are a great sports fish that are not found in other areas in Australia.

People travel to Exmouth from overseas and around the country to target this species – so how lucky are we to have them in our backyard?

Jim Ireland is another fisherman travelling to Exmouth from elsewhere as he steamed his boat Our Time, a 52ft Maritimo, up from Fremantle for the two major tournaments next week.

On the journey north, the crew had some awesome weather and fishing, but the best part was the last leg from Tantabiddi to the marina when they tagged a blue marlin that weighed an estimated 170kg.

Only Jim and one other person were on the boat at the time and they were using a technique called switching, which can be very challenging at the best of times.

Switching is when you run a spread of hookless lures astern and keep a watchful eye on them.

Once a fish is attracted to the lure, the lure is brought towards the boat while a bait on a circle hook is dropped back near the lure.

The aim is to “switch” the fish from the lure to the bait on the circle hook.

This can be very difficult as many fish hit hard and fast and can be gone in a flash.

Other times the crew can miss the fish altogether and not even see it in the spread.

Even worse can be when the person dropping back the bait gets it tangled in the lure.

You have to have a switched on crew working the deck to be successful!

The advantage of this style of fishing is that you can use an outfit that is suited to the size of the fish. If it is a small fish, you can use a hook and bait along with a reel with a light

The other advantage is that circle hooks generally hook perfectly in the corner of the jaw and most don’t get dropped by the fish like J-hooks can.

They are also a single hook that is safer for retrieval.

However, the best part about switching is that it is very visual and exhilarating to watch as a marlin comes up at the stern of the boat and hunts down prey.

Anglers targeting billfish for the upcoming international event in Exmouth have been rewarded with a mixture of species. A few have managed to get blue and black marlin, along with sailfish, in one or two days.

I believe we will have a few anglers getting the grand slam during this three-day tag-and-release event.

West Pilbara, competing in their first-ever finals, edged out reigning premiers Eastern Goldfields and Albany on net run rate in a dramatic conclusion as the all-important games were played simultaneously on the twin fields at Murdoch on Monday afternoon.

Eastern Goldfields headed into the final games knowing victory against Albany would clinch the title, but they were beaten by 11 runs.

As a result, West Pilbara leapfrogged them for the Cup as they chased down Peel’s score with nine balls to spare.

The result ended Eastern Goldfields’ attempt for a third straight title, while it also denied Albany a third regional crown this season, having already won the Senior and Junior Country Weeks.

Davey was a part of Western Australia’s triumphant squad at the Commonwealth Bank Australian Country Cricket Championships.

A key part of West Pilbara’s success was their bowling attack, which was full of spinners who took the pace off the ball, with most batting sides finding them hard to get away.

Eastern Goldfields’ Chris Johnston and Albany’s Julian Crudelli tied for the Brad Hogg Medal, which was presented by the popular spinner’s parents Greg and Sue, with his fiancée Cheryl also present.

Hogg was away with the Australia T20 squad preparing for the ICC World T20.

Matches throughout the finals were hosted by Murdoch University-Melville Cricket Club and Melville Cricket Clubs at Murdoch University Playing Fields and Tompkins Park respectively.

The Karratha Marlins women’s team and men’s team are looking forward to hosting the National Country Water Polo Championships next year.

Marlins to host national water polo titles

By Ben Leahy Karratha’s men’s and women’s Marlins water polo teams didn’t win a game at their first state titles in Bunbury last weekend, but they did not come home empty-handed either.

Not only did the Marlins have fun on the trip and gain experience competing against country teams from across WA, they also won the right to host the National Country Water Polo Championships next year.

Following the nationals, Karratha will then host the WA Country Water Polo Championships in 2016.

Karratha Water Polo Association secretary and men’s coach Anouska Angrove said the local teams are thrilled to be able to host the tournaments and will build on this year’s performance.

“Karratha unfortunately didn’t win a game in either the men’s or the women’s divisions,” Angrove said. “But we were definitely competitive and played

extremely well considering it’s Karratha’s inaugural season and our first ever country champs.”

The Karratha women had a tougher tournament, going down 11-3 to Busselton, 11-1 to Bunbury and 13-1 to Geraldton.

The men’s team started off with an 11-5 defeat against Busselton, before putting in a strong performance against Peel in the second round to go down by two points in an 8-6 score line.

However, two Karratha players were standouts with Justin Angrove scoring the most goals in the competition and named in the WA men’s team to take part in the National Country Championships at Woy Woy on the NSW Central Coast in June.

They bounced back to end the tournament in stronger fashion in a 7-2 defeat to Peel.

Both teams played four matches during the weekendlong tournament.

Two Karratha women also made the WA country team, with Alex Dobbin and Kerryann Hoff picked for the squads.
