By Tamara Binamat A 25-year-old Wiluna man has appeared in the Newman Magistrates Court after allegedly stealing a vehicle from a Newman address on Saturday September 7. The man allegedly stole the Hyundai Elantra before a drunken joyride with a female passenger through Newman. Newman Police sighted the man, who had no driver’s license, driving the stolen car about 5:45pm.
Police began to follow the vehicle, but it ran out of fuel after a short time and came to a stop, where the male and female were arrested. The driver failed a blood alcohol reading breath test, recording more than five times the legal limit. The driver was charged with Steal Motor Vehicle, DUI, and No Authority to Drive. The female passenger was released. The man appeared in court on Monday September 9 and is remanded in custody until September 18.

Steelpipe looks to seize on mining slowdown By Ben Leahy For most contractors, a slowing construction and investment cycle in the resources industry would be a cause for worry. But for Perth manufacturer of steel pipes, Steelpipe, the slowdown is actually opening up opportunities. Steelpipe is currently making hollow steel tubes, called pilings, for an expansion project at Dampier Port, and sales manager Ian Hutchens said the company’s ability to turn around products quickly was an advantage in the current environment. “I think that, at the moment, a slower economy is probably better for us where the quantities are smaller, and the delivery times are probably more constrained,” Hutchens said. “We’ve found that because we are local and flexible, the smaller projects [with tighter deadlines] suit us because we can make and deliver products in weeks rather than waiting months to get it from overseas.” But carving out a niche in the North West resources market has not been an easy ride for Steelpipe. Steelpipe’s Perth pipe mill began operating in 2006-07 but was immediately hit by the Global Financial Crisis.
• Steel pilings made by Steelpipe at Rio Tinto’s Cape Lambert site
However, Hutchens said smaller projects today often needed faster deliveries and flexible timeframes along with after sales support. He said Steelpipe has completed major projects, such as providing pilings for use in the construction of Fremantle’s Inner Harbour, and Pilbara projects for Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton. Hutchens also cites Steelpipes current work with the Dampier Port expansion project as an example of its strengths. Rather than building permanent docks, the Dampier Port expansion involves the construction of floating docks that are cheaper and quicker to build. With the Dampier floating docks to be completed by January 2014, Hutchens said Steelpipe was able to make the first pilings the Dampier Port Authority’s piling contractor within two weeks. “The good thing about [the Dampier Port project] is it’s obviously a local idea by the Port Authority, and it’s being, I think, constructed locally and the materials are being made locally,” Hutchens said. Yet ironically, the Dampier Port expansion is designed to facilitate cheaper shipments between the Pilbara and China, which could ultimately threaten Steelpipe’s business.
It also has to compete with steel pipe mills in China.
However, Hutchens said Steelpipe will have to keep innovating and adapting to survive and hopes the Pilbara’s resources industry keeps supporting the company.
During the last investment boom, in particular, large-scale construction projects in the North West often imported their steel products in huge quantities from China.
“[We don’t want to see a] future when people go, ‘OK I only want a small quantity of piling but, oops, now I’ve got to wait 12-weeks for it because people like us have gone out of business,” he said.

Pluto LNG likely to reduce staff numbers By Ben Leahy
in either ongoing Pluto LNG roles, or alternative Woodside opportunities.
A number of Karratha families could be moving to Perth after Woodside confirmed that it expects to reduce the number of staff working at its Pluto LNG processing plant in the coming year and a half.
“This will include a mix of residential and FIFO positions.” The company said the review of staff levels at Pluto LNG was a result of the project’s transition from a construction phase into a steady operational phase.
Woodside told employees at a meeting on Friday September 6 that is was developing a “new organisational model for its Pluto LNG operations” on the Burrup Peninsula.
Pluto shipped its first LNG cargo in early 2012 and generated $1.164bn in revenue for Woodside over the remaining eight months of the year.
The company would not confirm how many employees will be affected, but it is likely some will be relocated into FIFO roles.
Woodside, through its Pluto and the nearby North West Shelf joint venture onshore processing plant, is also a major employer within the Shire of Roebourne.
“It is expected there will be some reduction in the number of site-based staff at Pluto LNG as a result of implementing a new organisational model,” a Woodside spokesperson told the Pilbara Echo.
Under an A$34m Pluto LNG Conservation Agreement with the Australian Government, Woodside also sponsors community projects in the Pilbara, including a partnership to develop Indigenous rangers for

the Murujuga National Park. However, Woodside recently announced that it favours moving toward an offshore gas processing system as it looks to develop the Browse gas fields north of Broome with its joint venture partners. The company did not confirm whether or not its “new organisational model” was related to restructuring ahead of potential future floating LNG operations. Woodside employees who may be affected by these changes did not want to be quoted for this story but said the company has been open in its dealings with staff. The Woodside spokesperson said the Pluto staff restructuring will take place in phases and is expected to be completed by 2015. “Woodside will continue to maintain a significant residential workforce to support its operations in the Shire of Roebourne,” the company spokesperson said.

By Claire Calvey Skilled workers holding temporary 457 work visas are rallying together with their families to oppose a proposal in the recent Western Australian state budget to introduce mandatory school fees. Under the proposal, which will come into effect from January 2014, 457 visa holders would have to pay $4,000 per child per annum to attend public schools. But this singling out of 457 holders seems grossly unfair considering they pay the same taxes as Australian citizens, without perks, such as Medicare or social welfare, and many will have no choice but to return to their home countries. Sharon Flynn Mitchell moved to Karratha from Dublin with her electrician husband and two children, aged four and five-yearsold, in March this year. “When we were considering the move to WA, one of the deciding factors was the free education,” Mitchell, a fully-qualified special needs assistant, said. “We knew we would be entitled to nothing else and we accepted that and still do. “We never came here looking for handouts, just the right to an education. “And everything we earn goes straight back into WA’s economy.” While the State Government claims that it is losing money by providing free education to the children of 457 visa holders, the cost to economies, such as the Pilbara, could be far greater if these families move back home. Workers on 457 visas fill a vital gap in the labour market, and representatives of the WA Government actively visited
countries, such as Ireland, in recent years to recruit 457 visa holders. The CEO of the Pilbara Regional Council Tony Friday said 457 visa holders played a critical role in helping small businesses and the resources industry find employees in the Pilbara. “The Pilbara is prone to experiencing periods of labour shortages that coincide with the minerals and resources cycle, and the PRC views regional migration as an essential component in the labour supply market,” Friday said. “The Council is very concerned about any action that may negatively impact local employers’ ability to seek and secure labour during periods of shortage.” Coinciding with a slight downturn in the economy, the proposed implementation of these fees appears to be a cynical move by the WA Government to generate much needed funds. Although the State Government has yet to comment on the specifics of the proposed fees, 457 holders from across WA have already joined forces in protest. They have launched a campaign in which they are contacting their local MPs, unions and employers and giving media interviews. A Facebook page, called 457s in Oz, is serving as the central hub of the campaign and a rally is planned to be held at noon on September 19. Stephen Dawson, the Labour Member for the Regional and Pastoral Region, will be presented with a petition bearing more than 1,000 signatures on the steps of Parliament House, by a child symbolically wearing a school uniform. For more information visit the 457s in Oz Facebook page.

SAS to participate in Pilbara counterterrorism exercises figures and politicians, including Federal Senator Alan Eggleston, have long been calling for more personnel to be stationed in the region. Despite this, the two-week exercises will use Western Australian-based forces. As well as Western Australian police and customs units, the Defence Force’s elite Special Air Service Regiment will be used in the exercises. The Australian Defence Force, including its elite Special Air Service Regiment, will conduct marine counter-terrorism exercises in Exmouth, Karratha and Dampier between September 15-29.
A Defence Force spokesperson said the two-week training will particularly focus on marine counter-terrorism threats to offshore oil and gas installations.

St Luke’s to keep an eye on the Richter Scale By Ben Leahy
A N IN VA OW NE ILA W BL M E AN !
St Luke’s College students in Karratha will be able to track earthquakes as far away as Japan after a seismometer was installed at the school on September 12. Australian National University researcher Dr Michelle Salmon installed the seismometer at St Luke’s and said it is one of 42 to be placed in schools around the country as part of the Federally-funded project, AuScope. She said the seismometer will help St Luke’s students learn about the science of earthquakes and how they affect people, particularly with quake-and-tsunamiprone regions of Indonesia located close by. “When students hear about earthquakes on the news they can see the very same earthquake recorded at their school, bringing science into relevance for them,” Salmon said.
With scientists unable to predict when and where earthquakes will , Salmon said St Luke’s seismometer will also help build a better understanding of quake activity. She said data from St Luke’s will be shared with researchers around the world as part of an international earthquake measuring program run from the US. And the St Luke’s seismometer could also help uncover further mineral wealth in Western Australia. A goal of the AuScope funding and a current research project of Dr Salmon’s is to create models of what the top kilometre of Australia’s subsurface looks like. “The data that comes in is used for research looking at the structure of the Earth around Australia,” Salmon said. “It provides some competitive information
for looking at mineral and oil exploration and also hopefully provides some information on where water basins are located too.” Salmon said the program was also designed to excite students. She said the seismometer could help discussions on topics ranging from the physics of wave propagation to studies of disaster relief. Rebecca Loftus from the St Luke’s Science Department said the school was excited to kick off the program. “In Year 9 in particular, students learn a lot about plate tectonics and earthquakes and for them to, not only see exactly how geologists measure and track seismic activity but to actually read the data first-hand and analyse it themselves, will be a wonderful opportunity,” Loftus said.

Great Outback BBQ promotes health in Roebourne By Tamara Binamat
the Roebourne Ramblers performed live music.
The Roebourne Community Wellness Centre threw open its doors last Friday September 6 as part of a national fundraising event through Frontier Services. Service providers, community members and local organisations attended the barbecue, along with families who access support from the centre. While the community lunched on healthy meat and salad, Cyril Munda’s band
Centre Coordinator Elaine Jolliffe said the open day was a good chance to promote the centre to the community.

Elaine hopes the open day encourages more people to get involved with the Roebourne Community Wellness Centre.
“We provide primarily for carers.

The show follows the adventures of Alice in Wonderland as she meets quirky characters, such as the Mad Hatter and Cheshire Cat and plays croquet with the Red Queen using flamingos as sticks.

With show organisers using props to great effect, such as to show Alice growing in size after she eats a piece of magic cake, Kylie said she had to touch some of the costumes to believe them.

Hatter production was one of the few major events at this year’s REAF Festival to be locally produced. After being commissioned by festival organisers, the Shire of Roebourne, local dance group, Ovation, produced the show using 32 cast members from its own company. The costumes were also designed and made locally, while most of the stage props were trucked in from Perth and Queensland. Ovation Performance Company ballet principal Megan Wood-Hill said audience members told her that they had thought the show was from interstate because of its professionalism. Megan is also involved this week in another REAF Festival event as she choreographs the Men of the Red Earth dance group, who perform on September 18 and 20. And she has her work cut out too. The group of everyday Pilbara plumbers, engineers and business owners are aiming to show the world that they’ve got rhythm despite having no formal dance training. “The show is an opportunity to do something well outside my comfort zone,” group member Damien Muller said, while admitting that he was drunk at the time he agreed to do the show. Yet having practised twice a week since July, Damien is quietly confident that Pilbara audiences will be impressed with the boys moves. Tom Price resident Kylie Dellar meanwhile, hopes that the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party will be staged again in the future. She wants to take her daughter Charlie to see it again. “Charlie is quite shy and doesn’t normally go off with people, but when one of the fairies picked her out of the audience [and took her onstage] she absolutely loved it and was just in awe of this fairy, it was really cute,” Kylie said.

GAWTHORNE DRIVE
By Tamara Binamat The glitz, glamour and glory of the Red Earth Arts Festival has well and truly weaved its way through Karratha after the REAF Village officially opened last weekend. Visitors to the festival have so far been entertained by pop-up bars, silent discos, burlesque performances, mermaids and pet photo booths, while the 100-year-old historical Spiegeltent has been pumping out the most cheeky, flirty and sometimes naughty acts. Amber Hasler is the associate director at FRINGE WORLD, the company bringing us the Spiegeltent, and she said the vintage travelling performance tent will be the site of many spectacular events over the three weeks of REAF. “This year, as part of REAF, we’ll be showcasing special, unique events [on top of the headline acts] outside the REAF tent,” she said. “Silent Disco is always heaps of fun. “You come in, you join the dancefloor with a set of headphones and you dance like nobody’s watching!” Dancers at the outdoor Silent Disco have the option to choose from two songs, and may or may not be dancing to the same song! The Silent Disco will offer a variety of music from local and intrastate DJs. “Once you get a really great dancefloor going you’re really vibing

Spiegeltent off the people around you and the fun thing is that you think you’re all on the same channel! “And being outside under the stars is always lovely.” But that’s not the only quirky event music-lovers can enjoy at the Spiegeltent, you can also head to Rock N Roll Karaoke for all the Barnsey and Farnsey you can contain. “Rock N Roll Karaoke is a latenight event where we’ll be hosting a big karaoke competition with a really select genre of songs,” Amber said. “It’s heaps of fun, I really think people are able to show their true performer when singing a great rock and roll song. “You’ll be surprised how easy it is to get carried away with air guitar.” And with Bogan Bingo happening just before the singing competition, dressing up is encouraged. “I think if you were to crack out a pretty good hair band outfit, it wouldn’t go unnoticed,” Amber suggested. “It’s for people with a sense of adventure who really do enjoy comedy and great music.”

at the centre of the universe By Tamara Binamat It’s a birthday milestone many would celebrate, but Marble Bar’s Iron Clad Hotel is set to surpass all expectations when they throw their 120th birthday bash next Saturday September 21. Headlining the 10-hour event is country rocker Lee Kernaghan, who said he has some advice from support act The Wolfe Brothers, who toured through Marble Bar for this year’s Marble Bar Cup. “They said ‘get out there Lee’,” revealed Kernaghan. “They said ‘it’s going to be a huge party - prepare yourself!’ “[Country towns] are the spiritual home of my music. “I’ve always been inspired by regional Australia and it all started with Boys from the Bush.” Kernaghan has most recently been promoting his Beautiful Noise album with a sell-out tour across Australia. The tour will culminate with Kernaghan’s performance at the Iron Clad Hotel next week. “I wanted to come to Marble Bar because that’s real country,” Kernaghan said. “I’m going to get a lot of inspiration for my next album with this visit, I just
know it. “I’ve heard about Yarrie Station and Annabelle Coppin and the miners out there and the station hands. “I think I’ll take a lot out of the visit.” Perhaps Kernaghan’s birthday gift to the Iron Clad will be a song dedicated to the town it’s celebrated for over a century. “It’s always a big challenge embarking on a new album project because I reckon you’re only as good as the songs you put out there,” Kernaghan said. “Sometimes we write and re-write a song several times until we feel we’ve got it right. “Then, before it’s released, I road test the song in a Landcruiser. “If it passes that test it makes it onto the album.” The full concert production in Marble Bar will showcase all Kernaghan’s hits, as well as the best performances from The Wolfe Brothers, Ill Starred Captain, 4String Phil, Chris Matthews, Fitzroy Xpress and Seaside Drifters. “We’re really excited about it,” Kernaghan said. “I just believe in my heart that on September 21 Marble Bar will be the centre of the universe.”

Cat in the Hat Natural Health comes to life by Naomi Gillespie

A lack of libido In my clinic there seems to be a huge amount of people that have a problem with their lack of libido or their partner’s lack of libido. This may have something to do with working too long, drinking too much and being completely stressed. There may be a lack of nutrition and exercise thrown in there as well. It is sad, as the age bracket ranges from early twenties to late sixties. There is a definite lack of sex in the Pilbara! I have come to the assumption there is little time or energy left in this working town to put into this important and healthy ritual. Sex provides us with intimacy in a relationship and is also a important to your state of mind and health. When we have an orgasm we release hormones such as oxytocin that help us relax our nervous system and calm our minds. Oxytocin is the hormone women release during labour to relax and decrease pain. Studies have also shown that 48 per cent of people that suffer migraines and headaches relieve themselves of their symptoms with sex. And if you’re not hitting the gym or exercising regularly sex is great cardio!
There are many physiological imbalances that can decrease our sex drive, such as an exhausted adrenal gland, which is in charge of our energy and sleep cycles and helps to balance our hormones. When we get tired, have trouble sleeping and live stressed, our poor adrenal gland suffers. This affects the pituitary gland, which is in charge of the sex hormones that give us our libido and make us want to have sex. The other gland that affects the libido is the thyroid, which contributes to the balance of our metabolism, menses, moods, energy and much more. Decreased thyroid function decreases libido. Lack of vital nutrients, especially zinc, is another factor in lowered sexual function. If we don’t eat live fresh foods we acquire nutrient deficiencies that contribute to decreased sexual function and lack of energy to preform. So what can we do about this? It seems to me that we need to bring some romance back and remember why you fell in love or lust with your sex partner. Why can’t the girls don a new piece of lingerie? Why can’t the boys please remember what foreplay is? We need to sleep more, stress less and make sure we eat healthy and exercise. Lock that bedroom or bathroom door and get jiggy with it again. I guarantee you’ll be much less stressed and a whole lot happier. If you feel there is something physiologically wrong then see your health practitioner for a check-up.
Baynton West Primary students brought Dr Suess’s zany adventures to life last week as they performed the Cat in the Hat musical at St Luke’s on September 12. In the musical, the Cat in the Hat (played by Phoebe White) together with the character Jo-Jo (Stathis Tsiricopoulos) creates an entire world on a speck of dust. But the world is so small that no one knows it exists except an elephant with big ears, who can hear the tiny people living on that world. To bring such a wacky storyline to the stage, the 54-strong student cast and their parents stitched together bright costumes and spent more than 60-hours on formal after school rehearsals. Art teacher Kim Shepherdson said the students also gave a preview performance at July’s FeNaClNG Festival and used CDs and script books to practice their dancing and singing at home. “I’ve got lots of emails from parents saying the musical has been fantastic in helping their child grow in confidence and how they are [simultaneously] being driven crazy by the students practicing their singing in the car and the shower,” Kim said. With Baynton West Primary opening in February this year, the Cat in the Hat musical is the school’s first stage production. Kim said the musical was an important part of the school’s mission to give students the chance to excel in academic, sporting and artistic pursuits. “It has been fantastic fun to work with the students and to see all of their personalities shine

“So we talked about how medications can both cause and prevent falls. “Some medications help reduce dizziness and prevents falls but also a lot of medications have the side effect of drowsiness and blurred vision and dizziness and can increase the chance of falls.” Kristina said it was important senior residents took an active role in asking about the effects of the medications they were on. They should also keep a list on their person of all the medications they take so that doctors will be able to treat them safely in an emergency situation. “It was also a lot of fun to have that one on one experience with people rather than being behind a counter and looked upon as someone, who is too busy to be able to help out,” Kristina said. “It was good getting the message across that they can come and talk to us anytime.”

Shire of Roebourne senior citizens did the chicken dance for exercise and learnt other health tips from medical professionals at two workshops last week held as part of Stay on Your Feet Week. The Shire-run workshops in Roebourne on September 10 and Karratha on September 12 included tips from a physiotherapist for keeping active, a talk by a pharmacist on ways to manage medication and an exercise in walking tall run by a podiatrist. Pharmacist Kristina Stafford from Karratha’s Pharmacy Help said she had fun chatting with the seniors and concentrated her talk on tips to help prevent them from falling and injuring themselves. “What is important for each person is that they know about their medication and what kind of side effects it has,” Kristina said.
when they are on stage,” she said. Year 7 student Phoebe White said she hopes that her role as the Cat in Hat is the first of many leading performances. “I really want to be an actor and I like talking a lot,“ she said. Not only was Phoebe a member of a performing arts academy in Melbourne before she moved to the Pilbara this year, but she is also in the running to land every kid’s dream job. She hopes to become a presenter on a Disney TV show in which she would review toys, such as Angry Birds games and merchandise. Phoebe said she sent in an audition tape to the show earlier this month and was so nervous that she made another tape the next day and sent that in as well.

Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report By Jenni Gates
Storm, Dampier final rematch By Claire Moran The final spot in Karratha’s women’s softball grand final was up for grabs on Saturday September 3 as the Orbits and Storm took to the field in a do-or-die battle. The winner would go straight through to challenge Dampier for the 2013 West Pilbara Softball Organisation title. After Storm’s defeat to Dampier Green the previous week, it was evident that they had to make some changes to their tactics. And Storm’s Jo Leo stepped onto the pitchers plate for the first time this season and did an impressive job. Despite Leo’s pitches, Tracey Smyth managed to get bat to ball and hit a beautiful piece, which unfortunately for her, went straight to the Storm’s Kalisa Storey at shortstop who easily took the catch. Nadia Smyth and Sharelle Clark both had big hits into the outfield and got on the bag, while Mereana Joseph followed suit but was caught out by the Storm’s Elysia Canning in right field. Virginia Weightman then closed the Orbits out by taking a catch at three, but not before Nadia Smyth got home to get the Orbits on the scoreboard. Mereana Joseph was slow to find her form in the pitchers circle for the Orbits, allowing Nikki Brough to take a walk to first, but then she picked up her game. She got a K2 on Kalisa Storey when she came in to bat. Nikki Brough’s speed was impressive as she stole her way
around the bases to get across the home plate. Adi Voigt had a great swing and fired the ball directly at Ash Allan at second, who took the catch and made the double play to end Storm’s batting dig. Kalisa Storey put her body on the line with a remarkable dive to try and stop Sherie Robertson’s ball from getting past her, but it just inched beyond her glove allowing Sherie to safely make it to first. The Storm’s outfield continued to remain solid with Elysia and Nikki both taking further catches, but the Orbits still managed to find the gaps and consistently got around the bases. Once again Kyla Thomas smashed it out of the park for the Storm, racking up yet another homerun to add to her tally. Jo Smythe batted reliably, while Rachel Middlebrook and Kimberley Putland took impressive catches for the Orbits in the outfield. The pressure was on the Orbits now to score some more runs to remain in the game but unfortunately they struggled to get their hits beyond the infield and the Storm’s smart fielding managed to keep them from crossing the home plate. With that the umpire called time and game and the Storm had snatched victory by one run, the game finishing 7-6 The WPSO Grand Final between the Karratha Storm and Dampier Green is on this Saturday September 14 at Bulgarra Oval. Come on down and support your local teams.

and queenfish, along with big spangled emperor, are the main hunters. At this time of year it is common to see bait schools in the gulf with a myriad of fish feeding including trevally, tuna, mackerel, queenfish, cobia, sharks and sailfish. The bait schools can be seen from shore along the gulf and there can be some great action particularly off Bundegi. Have you been crabbing lately? There are still some good crabs around the gulf and crabbing can be a great day out for the family. The muddies can be a little more challenging to capture, but the blue swimmers are as tasty as ever. You don’t always need a boat to get the crabs, some people use the crab nets in the shallows with a long cast from the shore. Our recommendation is to take just enough crabs for a fresh meal, as they don’t freeze well and then there is more for next time. Mullet as bait works well in the crab nets due to the toughness. The sandflies have been a little overwhelming lately though, so don’t forget the Bushman’s!

The Betta Billfish Bonanza is sneaking up on us and will be here before we know it. This 3-day tournament is a great fun competition that is tag and release only of billfish species. Most boats target the sailfish in the gulf, while others go wide to chase the marlin. If you haven’t fished for billfish before, this is a great opportunity to join a team and learn. Juniors are encouraged to fish this event and there are usually a high number of young anglers that compete. If you have a junior who is keen to fish this event, but don’t have the gear, there are ten rod and reel outfits available for loan for targeting billfish. The Shimano rods and reels are available from Tackle World
Exmouth, so drop instore and reserve one before they all go. There has been another family travelling around Australia to enjoy the fishing and safe travels of this country. The young kids have been learning along the way - what a great adventure! The family planned to stop in the Exmouth region for a couple of days, but have now changed plans to stay on for a week or two! They have been catching reef fish from their small dinghy and spangled emperor and squid from the beach around the west side. They also got into some whiting and crabs in the gulf. They couldn’t believe how good the snorkeling is here and I’d be interested to see if they end up living here one day!

Large predatory fish are on the prowl this last week as schools of fusiliers flicker nervously in the shallows. The local charter operators have been getting amongst the action using stick baits and soft plastic lures. Marcus Reinders and Amanda Leske came all the way from South Australia for the GT fishing here and had two days out on Peak Sportfishing when Amanda landed the beauty pictured this week. The couple are spending the rest of the trip land-based fishing around the tip chasing more GTs. On the two days out on the boat they also caught long tail tuna, Spanish mackerel, shark mackerel, red bass, coronation trout, gold spot trevally, snapper, barracuda and Marcus caught a long tail that was about 20kg! The hot lures used were Maria stick baits in floating 180mm and Shimano ocea 180mm sinking. As mentioned in previous reports, we expect large schools of baitfish to show up in big numbers in spring. Massive schools of long tail tuna are in the gulf through the deeper areas, while in the shallows bruiser GTs
Did you know it is illegal to use traps for recreational fishing in Western Australia? The Department of Fisheries would like to remind fishers that although traps are available to purchase, the use of them is prohibited in the majority of WA waters. North Region community education officer Dylan Pross said: “Illegal use of traps is an increasing issue in the Kimberley and Pilbara.” Crab traps are illegal, due to the potential impacts on incidental species such as fish, turtles and crocodiles, as well as issues with traps becoming environmental concerns when lost.

Eight juniors break PBs in Little Aths By Rob Krueger
the shot over 5m for the first time with a throw of 5.42m.
More than 70 junior athletes broke a combined 185 personal bests as Karratha Little Athletics hosted its second last night of competition last week. Eight athletes on the night even notched up the maximum possible five PBs from five events. Zoe Paterson created history by once again breaking all five of her PBs, which is the third consecutive competition night she has achieved the feat. Others to join Zoe in the five PB club were Austin Bloomfield, Joel Bulla, Jack Clarke, Sommer Dew, Leeah Dewar-Ashton, Maddie Harding and Rachel Hinkley. Jack Clarke returned from his football commitments to record the fastest 100m of the season with a time of 13.37sec. Kaitlin King was the fastest of the girls with a time of 14.47sec. The 200m sprints saw large improvements with five athletes breaking their PBs by 3sec or more. Bella Dew knocked 3sec off her best to record a time of 45.8sec, with Daniel Macri doing likewise to record 44.3sec. Jessica Giltrow and Shayden Richardson, meanwhile, knocked off 4sec each with times of 42.57sec and 34.92sec. Jessica Tunstead took the overall 200m honours, smashing 6sec off her run time to record 43.41 secs. A standout in the 800m event was Maddie Keogh, who took a minute off her PB. The field events proved to be a huge source of personal bests, with discus resulting in a group of athletes throwing over their PBs by more than 2m. Among the 10 athletes to do this, Kaitlin King impressed all by smashing her PB by 4.5m to record a throw of 14.52m. The Shot put had its own firsts also, with Jerome Ieremia placing
Grace Keogh improved on her PB by 1m to record a 6.57m throw.

Jack Clarke and Desiree Ieremia took out the longest throws with 8.47m and 7.23m respectively. The long jumpers almost broke some barriers with Taj Clarke jumping over 3m for the first time to record a jump of 3.14m. Leeah Dewar Ashton and Jessica Giltrow both broke the 2m barrier for the first time this season recording jumps of 2.14m and 2.24m respectively. Rachel Hinkley was the big improver, jumping 50cm longer than her previous best to record a distance of 1.74m. Eight-year-old Darcy Gray continues to impress recording the third longest jump at 3.13m for the night and edging out the older 10-year-olds. All triple jumpers cleared 6m for the first time, with Maddie Harding recording a 1m improvement and Zoe Paterson jumping furthest with a 6.85m effort. Ben Davis broke the 10m barrier for the turbo javelin with a throw of 11.1m, while Ella Jones improved on her PB effort by almost 2m. The quote of the night came from Joel Bulla after he completed the 800m run: “I let Bridget beat me, because it’s not about winning, it’s about getting your personal bests!”

Free Weekly 14 - 15 September 2013
Burrup Mountain Bikers take to Back Beach By Campbell Haslam The eighth and final round of the Scott Cycles 2013 Mountain Bike season will take place on Sunday September 22 and will take the format of an endurance ride instead of the normal lap format. The course is being finalised and riders will be notified via the Club’s website, however the event will start at 4pm. Last Saturday, the mountain bike season continued with Round 7 at the relatively flat but fast-paced Back Beach. Several sections of the track were made tricky by the effect of heavy rains earlier this winter with several deep washout sections reminding riders to keep on the straight and narrow. The warmer weather did not deter people, and the healthy numbers experienced throughout the season continued with 40 riders taking part.
In the Elite category Mark Smith continued his consistent form and won with a time of 53 minutes and 34 seconds from the 2013 season’s revelation, Richie Chipman (54:24) in second and Toby Muller (55:10) third. In the Expert category, the departure to injury of Keith Johns following a serious crash in the previous rounds, has opened up the competition. It was good to see a recovering Keith was on hand to witness Nick Muller take the win in a very neat time of 44:44, trailed in second place by Reece Greenam (46:21). Greg Pickford rounded out the podium in third with a hard fought 48:16 for his eight laps. Rodney Gethin (36:59) continued his steady form this season in the Sport category taking first place, ensuring the competition in this category is likely to come down to the last round. Rodney was unsuccessfully chased all day by
Steve McLeod who finished second in 37:20 and Glen Sycamore was third with a time of 38:36. The ladies category, this season, has welcomed a resurgence of riders of the fairer sex. Proving how enjoyable the ride was, the smiling Amanda Ewin continued her winning form to take top spot in a time of 38:50. Kellie McCann finished second (39:57) and Mikayla Smith (44:53) rounded out the podium. Another resurgent category this season has been the Juniors with Dylan Muller (27:39) taking the win ahead of William Gethin (28:52) and third placed Bodhi Power (29:53). For more details on the next event and full results from this event please check out the club website at http://home.spin. net.au/burrupmb/. See you out there.
