Department of Parks and Wildlife
Western Shield wildlife recovery Fox baiting using dried meat baits containing naturally occurring toxin (1080) will be carried out in September and October in the Burrup Peninsular and adjoining islands. All aerial and ground baited areas are signposted and should be considered toxic to pets at all times of the year. Owners of domestic dogs or cats should not allow their pets to enter baited areas.
A rare Pilbara sight! Driving along a rail access road near the great Northern Highway, Magnus Sunde found this Black Swan cooling off.
ATTENTION PET OWNERS: THESE BAITS WILL KILL DOMESTIC DOGS AND CATS Through baiting, the Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPaW) can continue to control the threat of foxes and bring native animals back from the brink of extinction. This wildlife recovery program is significantly helping conservation efforts for endangered native animals such as turtles, birds and marsupials. For more information on Western Shield, contact your local DPaW office or browse the information about Western Shield on DPaWs website at www.dpaw.wa.gov.au (under Management and protection, Programs). The department acknowledges BHP Billiton, Tiwest Joint Venture, Alcoa World Alumina Australia, Worsley Alumina, Western Areas NL and Tectonic Resources NL for their sponsorship of Western Shield. adcorp F87915

Roebourne’s vehicle graveyard By Tamara Binamat There’s a place in Roebourne where vehicles seized by police go to be wrecked – an industrial yard that has become a graveyard for cars. Sergeant Steve Scott from the Pilbara Traffic Office said last year 672 vehicles were impounded for hoon offences or drivers licence offences,
while 356 have been seized so far this year. Hoon offences include driving excessively over the speed limit or driving recklessly. Sergeant Scott said the laws are robust and the message is clear. “If you continue to offend and you continue to drive without a licence this is where
your vehicle will end up,” he said. “Stop driving without a licence, stop doing the wrong thing on the road. “If you think you won’t be caught - you’re only kidding yourself.” Some of the impounded vehicles will be used in road safety exercises and others will be wrecked for scrap metal.

Pilbara teachers walk off the job to protest budget cuts More than 200 teachers in Karratha and Port Hedland have joined thousands around the State in protesting proposed cuts to the State education system. It was anticipated that more than 60 Western Australian schools would close down last Thursday morning as teachers walked off the job. Teachers are protesting the loss of 500 jobs, a freeze on teacher numbers and cuts to some special programs to improve student literacy
and behaviour. The cuts would not only apply to Perth schools, but regional centres as well, the State School Teacher’s Union said. Carolyn Smith from the United Voice lobby group with 23,000 members in Western Australia said the State Government was looking for budget savings in the wrong areas. “Instead of quality education, Colin Barnett thinks it’s more important to build a stadium and somewhere to park a yacht in the city,” Smith said.
Families on 457 visas to pay school fees from 2015 By Ben Leahy and Claire Calvey The State Government has confirmed that families of 457 visa holders in Western Australia will have to pay fees to send their children to Government schools. WA Premier Colin Barnett said families on 457 visas will soon pay a State-school tuition fee of $4,000 per annum ($1,000 per term) for their first child and $2,000 for each subsequent child. Yet the Premier did make a minor concession by delaying the introduction of the fees until 2015, rather than 2014 as previously stated. “This means that anyone who is already living here on a 457 visa or who has already lodged a visa application to come here soon will not have to pay unexpected fees for schooling next year,” Barnett said. The Premier said that there were more than 1,300 new enrolments of students on 457 visas in the last two years and that it cost on average $15,000 to educate a child in Western Australia. “The Government has to introduce this measure to try to recoup some of the cost of educating these children from overseas,” Barnett said.
“He has lost touch with the priorities of everyday people.” The cuts come as credit rating agency Standard & Poor’s last week downgraded Western Australia’s rating from triple A to AA+ in view of the State’s debt being predicted to blow out to $22bn in the 2013-14 financial year. Education Minister Peter Collie, defended the cuts when they were announced in August and said Western Australia already spends $4.4bn on education
“The Pilbara is prone to experiencing periods of labour shortages that coincide with the minerals and resources cycle, and the PRC views regional migration as an essential component in the labour supply market,” Friday said. “The Council is very concerned about any action that may negatively impact local employers’ ability to seek and secure labour during periods of shortage.”

“This decision reflects the pressure on the State’s budget and the reality that WA taxpayers contribute to the cost of services, such as education, over a lifetime of paying taxes, rather than a period of just four years, as with 457 visa holders.” However, CEO of the Pilbara Regional Council Tony Friday said 457 visa holders were critical to the Pilbara economy.
Budget,” he said. “This is exacerbated by the slowing growth in taxation revenue as our economy makes the transition from the construction phase of major resource projects to the production and export phase. However, Shadow Treasurer Ben Wyatt said the State’s finances had become an “embarrassment” under the Barnett Government. “Despite some of the strongest economic times WA has ever experienced, Mr Barnett has single-

Pilbara residents to go to polls to elect local councillors By Ben Leahy The mayor of the Town of Port Hedland will be among the positions contested in council elections held across the North West this October. Current mayor Kelly Howlett will be standing against Bill Dziombak, George Deccache and Lorraine Butson for the mayoral position, with Hedland residents to cast their votes by post before October 15 or in person by October 19. Arnold Carter, David Hooper, Jan Gillingham, Lorraine Butson, Troy Melville and David Van Vugt will also stand for election in Hedland as regular councillors. In the Shire of Roebourne, current president Fiona WhiteHartig will retain her place on council for a further four-years after she was the only nominee from the Wickham, Cossack and Point Samson Ward. Competition was much fiercer in the
Karratha Ward, however, where eight candidates have put their names forward for four council vacancies. They include incumbents Joanne Pritchard and Evette Smeathers, who will re-contest their seats, along with Brian Johnston, Julie Pope, Shirley Simpson, Robin Vanderberg, David Hipworth and Geoff Harris. In the Dampier Ward, Nerida Kickett and Brad Beaumont will vie to be elected to a four-year term on council. Shire of Roebourne chief executive officer Chris Adams said it was encouraging to see so many nominations this year. “Our Councillors play a vital role ensuring the voice of the community is heard and considered by local government, which can be a tough and demanding job,” Adams said. “We’ve had a fantastic response this
year, with a number of Wards and candidates up for election,” he added. Meanwhile, in the Shire of Ashburton, there will be fewer changes to the council lineup, despite the State Government suspending the councillors for six months in December last year. The Shire’s only contested seat will be in Paraburdoo where incumbent councillor Ivan Dias is standing for election against Jessica Chan. Fellow incumbent councillors Cecilia Fernandez and Dennis Wright have been elected unopposed to the seats of Tom Price and Pannawonica, while newcomer Anthony Bloem was also elected unopposed to Tom Price. The high number of candidate nominations in the Pilbara has also been reflected in local governments across the State. The Western
Australian Electoral Commission reported that it received a total of nearly 800 nominations in WA for just over 300 vacancies, an increase of 12 per cent over 2011 and the largest number of candidates ever. Residents are eligible to vote in their Shire elections if they are registered on the Western Australian State electoral roll at a local address. It is not compulsory to vote in local government elections. Voting packs will be sent to residents in the coming weeks with the election results to be known on October 19.

New Aussies in the Pilbara
•Shire of Roebourne president Fiona White-Hartig with new Australians
Man rolls car after crashing at house in Wickham By Tamara Binamat
• Ashvini, Mandar, Soham and Mrunal Walimbe became Australian citizens on September 17 A large crowd of local residents gathered at the Karratha Leisureplex last Tuesday September 17 to receive their Australian Citizenships as part of National Citizenship Day. 57 community members born in Britain, China, India, New Zealand, South Africa and
the Philippines took the pledge to become Australians at the ceremony. The oldest among the new Aussie citizens was born in 1958 and the youngest in 2006. Shire of Roebourne president Fiona Whit-Hartig presented the citizenship certificates.
“Australian citizenship unites us as a community and shapes our future,” she said. “The Shire welcomed 57 people last night as Australian citizens, each with their own story and experiences, contributing to our already rich cultural diversity”
A 23-year-old Wickham man has allegedly crashed his car into a building and then rolled the vehicle after a drunken domestic dispute with his partner. Roebourne Police said that on Saturday September 14 at about 10am police were called to a residence in Wickham after the man had tried to drive away from the house he shared with his partner. As he tried to leave, the man
crashed into a brick wall at the front of the residence before driving away recklessly and spinning the car’s wheels. While police were at the scene they were notified of a car crash nearby, where they found the same man had rolled his vehicle. The offender failed a blood alcohol breath test and was charged with driving under the influence. He was conveyed to Nickol Bay Hospital but suffered no injuries.

Sam’s Island clean up Dampier and Karratha community members gathered last Sunday September 15 to lay a new water pipe to Sam’s Island and clear away overgrown vegetation. More than 30 residents took part in cutting down dead palm fronds and cleaning the castle homestead on the island, which now belongs to the Shire of Roebourne through a sub lease from Rio Tinto. The community members also laid a new water pipe across to the island with the help of three vessels provided by Brad Beaumont’s Discovery Cruising company and steel fish plates donated by Rio Tinto.
(G, Family, Run Time 85mins)
The 170 donated fish plates were used as weights to lay 600m of pipe between the island and mainland. A fire permit from the Shire allowed the community members to burn the palm fronds and other dead vegetation, before they all enjoyed a barbeque to celebrate a productive day’s work.

Wildlife Watch: Straw Necked Ibis The Straw-necked Ibis, Threskiornis spinicollisis, is a bird of the ibis and spoonbill family. It can be found throughout Australia, New Guinea, and parts of Indonesia. Adults have distinctive straw-like feathers on their neck. Straw-necked Ibises are large birds, around 60–75 cm long, and they have dark wings that show an iridescent, multi coloured sheen in sunlight and have a dark back and collar. Most of the neck is white, as are the underparts and under tail. They have a long, black, down-curved bill, and their legs are usually red near the top and dark grey toward the feet. Straw-like feathers on the neck of adults give the bird its common name. Sexes are similar, although

males have longer bills and females have a dark band across their upper breast. Juveniles have duller colours and shorter bills with less curvature, and lack the strawlike plumes on the neck. Straw-necked Ibises are found throughout Australia, except parts of Western Australia, South Australia, and south-west Tasmania. They are most abundant on the east coast and also inhabit Norfolk Island and Lord Howe Island as well as being found in Indonesia and New Guinea. They are commonly seen around shallow fresh water wetlands, cultivated pastures, the edges of swamps and lagoons and wet or dry grasslands. They tend to avoid arid and saltwater areas and coastal mudflats. They are extremely nomadic and are constantly on the move searching for
0438 924 842 • www.pwca.org.au suitable habitats. They are frequently seen standing on high branches of bare trees, silhouetted against the sky. Straw-necked Ibises have not adapted to the wide variety of food that Australian White Ibises now survive on. In shallow waters, straw-necked ibises feed on aquatic insects, molluscs, frogs and food sifted from the surface of the water body. On land, they thrive on grasshoppers, crickets and locusts and are often called the Farmer’s Friend because they feed on pests that would otherwise eat farm crops. They also eat small lizards, skinks and other reptiles. They build a large, rough, cup-shaped nest of sticks and trampled plants among reeds, paperbarks, bulrushes and trees over water. They build in colonies, often with the Australian White Ibis.
Lunar Circus lights the night By Tamara Binamat After a hugely successful three weeks of Red Earth Arts Festival fun in which approximately 16,000 locals have passed through the gates, REAF finishes this weekend with a sell-out concert tonight, Saturday September 21. One of last week’s festival highlights was the Lunar Circus, where word-class jugglers, acrobats and more entertained more than 1,000 people at Dampier and Wickham. The real-life gypsies had the audience on the edge of their seats with acts ranging from human pyramids to trapeze stunts.
Breeding season may be around March in the north and July to December in the south, but can occur throughout the year after heavy rain in some areas. Their nests are used year after year.

So I can serve my community better, I’ve completed qualifications in public policy and management. I am an active member of our community, and have been on many Boards and committees and currently Chair the Shire’s Audit and Risk Committee and the Tambrey Primary School Board.”

Parents frustrated by swimming lessons enrolments A number of Karratha kids and their parents were left high and dry last week as they tried to enroll for swimming lessons at the Karratha Leisureplex. Following delays at the previous swimming enrolments day in February when parents queued for more than an hour in the sun, the Shire of Roebourne trialed a new online system for Term 4 enrolments on September 16. But Shire chief executive officer Chris Adams said the system - despite being used by leisure centres around Australia - crashed under excess demand from parents. “I sincerely apologise to the many parents, who I know have been inconvenienced by these technical issues,” Adams said. “The overarching issue is that we find it very difficult to attract swimming instructors, which means there is fierce competition for the [children’s swimming] spots that are available. “There’s probably nowhere in Australia that has as much competition for swimming lessons as we do and the software clearly wasn’t built to cope with this sort of demand.” The Pilbara Echo was contacted by a number of frustrated parents on the day. This included one father, who was not sure whether he would get in more trouble from his children or his partner for failing to secure a place in the swimming program. The Shire offered swimming lessons for 500 children in both Terms 1 and 4 in 2013, but said it was planning to double this number in 2014 by also offering swimming lessons in Terms 2 and 3.

Q: My partner and I are looking to build an investment property and we are talking to a few builders at the moment. How do we know which builders are best suited to build an investment property? Paul, South Hedland A: You are taking the right approach by researching a number of different builders and there are two key aspects to your process. First you need to make sure they are an experienced, reputable builder, and secondly you need to make sure they understand what is required when building for an investor compared to an owneroccupier. Here are a few key questions to ask any potential builder: • How many years have you been in business? • On average, how many houses do your build each year? • What industry accreditations and affiliations do you have? • What are your standard defect and warranty periods? • How many investment properties do your build on average each year? • What education and resources do you provide for potential investors?
• Can you assist with the finance approval process? • What processes and procedures do you have in place to make the process as easy as possible for an investor? • How many features do you recommend in a house designed specifically for an investment property? • How do your recommended products, materials and fixtures differ in an investment property compared to an owner occupied property? • Do you offer in-house property management once the building process is complete? You are more than welcome to speak to one of our Property Investment Specialists to hear exactly the type of responses you should be looking for and then compare it to other builders. Our Property Investment Specialists are extremely knowledgeable when it comes to investment properties and can provide you with some very detailed responses to these types of questions. By Tamara Binamat Soul sensation Mahalia Barnes will be joining Australia’s favourite workingclass man, her father Jimmy Barnes, on stage at Port Hedland and Karratha this weekend. The duo is sure to rock the roof off, with full bands and a catalogue of hits to treat the audience with. Jimmy Barnes has said the audience is going to “love” the performances in the Pilbara. “The band is really, really tight and Mahalia is so in tune with me,” he said. And Mahalia said she is just as excited to be back performing in our region. “I had a great time last time I came up there,” she said. “I found that you had such a fantastic audience with so much energy, who were so receptive.”

Mahalia said the journey of motherhood has changed her art for the better. “I’ve got a lot more experience to draw from and a lot more motivation,” she said. “She’s an amazing girl and I think any parent knows you’ve got a new purpose to life when you have a child. “It’s a whole other level of drive to wok harder. “One of my favourite songs that we do was inspired by her Little Light. “We play that song at every show and every night it moves me.” Mahalia will be bringing her full band, The Soulmates, to Western Australia for the first time and said she is looking forward to

Costumed crusaders Nearly 500 partygoers made the most of Saturday’s eighth annual Apex Garden Party with cows, zombies, Stepford Wives and even Indian chiefs in attendance. Live music rocked the day away at the party’s “secret” location in the Port Walcott Yacht Club Apex Karratha president Ray Barth said Apex Karratha have already received a huge amount of positive feedback after organising this year’s event. “Party-goers loved the new location at the Port Walcott Yacht Club overlooking the ocean, even the strong wind conditions ended
up being a positive by keeping heavily costumed party-goers cool!” he said. “The event had a fantastic atmosphere with a wide-ranging age group partying together. “The costumes just get better and better every year and 2013 was no exception. “How ticket-holders are able to come up with different ideas every year is quite amazing.” Barth said proceeds from the event go back into the local community. “We have been able to give around $30,000 dollars in donations and over 700 hours in service time over the
last year,” he said. “We are already looking towards next year’s Garden Party with ideas and changes to make 2014 as exciting and enjoyable as 2013.” “Thanks to all those who bought tickets, we hope to see you next year!”

Wickham Soundslaves The inaugural Wickham Soundslave concert kicked off on Saturday September 7 at the Wickham Bistro and was a huge success, with around 200 music-lovers dancing the night away. The dancefloor was treated to the sweet sounds of DJ Matty M and 18K at the event, which raised funds for local community groups. Denise Rowell, Soundslave committee president, said she still excited about the success of their first event.
“The aim of Soundslave is to promote local music, provide entertainment for the community and most importantly raise money for our local community groups,” she said. “Due to the success of our first event we are planning another two events for next year – one in March which will feature DJs and one in September for bands.” The Soundslave Committee thank everyone involved in bringing the event to fruition, including sponsors Wickham ISS, Wickham Bar and Bistro, Pilbara Hire, Pilbara Access, Cossack Crane Hire and Taniwha Security. Wickham, Point Samson and Roebourne-based community groups can now apply for funds raised at the event by submitting grant applications of up to $1,000 to the Soundslave committee. Bride shares her joy with Yaandina seniors Leanne Evans recently took time on her wedding day to share her joy with residents of Roebourne’s Yaandina Frail Aged Hostel. Leanne married new husband Kerry on September 7, but, before tying the knot, dropped in at the Yaandina centre. As a volunteer helper at the hostel, Leanne wanted to have her photo taken with the residents.
“The residents were thrilled to see Leanne at the hostel on her wedding day and to have their photo’s taken with her,” Yaandina Frail Aged Hostel activities coordinator Kathy Brooker said. Once the snaps were done, a limousine then arrived at Yaandina to drive Leanne to Cossack where she celebrated a “beautiful” wedding, Kathy said.

Organisers of a fundraising “Zumbathon” are hoping 200 women will be shimmying and shaking for breast cancer research. Zumba instructor Grace Olinga said the event will be held in October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness month. “We thought it would be nice to have a party to celebrate people who have suffered from breast cancer and, in a happy way, raise money for breast cancer research so in the future we won’t have people suffering from this disease,” Grace said. The dance marathon will go for two hours, but Grace said you don’t have to Zumba for the whole two hours. “The dance party will be a great way to meet people and have fun, and at the same time raise money for a very worthy cause,” she said. “The Leisureplex will be decorated in pink thanks to Karen’s Party Place and we are encouraging dancers to dress in pink too!” Tickets are available at Karratha Leisureplex. Zumbathon Saturday October 12. 5 to 7pm at Karratha Leisureplex. Tickets: $20

Party in pink
The Pilbara’s red dirt has clearly found a place in the hearts of Irish couple Mikey Greaney and Breda Ryan. Coming from the Irish county of Kerry, the couple are saving to return to the Emerald Isle and build a house close to their families. Yet when Mikey decided to ask Breda to marry him on September 13, he couldn’t have chosen a more Pilbara-way of doing it. On the date of their second anniversary together, he towed a roadwork sign from Coates Hire to the front of their Karratha house with a special message lit up in lights: ‘Breda Ryan, will you marry me’. “I was totally in shock – I thought he was pulling a prank on me,” Breda said. Luckily, however, Mikey wasn’t, and the happy bride-to-be said yes in an instant. And as to the choice of proposal, Breda said it was a hit with her and the folks back home. Which is just as well for Mikey given that he had the chance to pop the question on top of the romantic Harbour Bridge just a few weeks earlier when the couple holidayed in Sydney. “I grew up around machinery and signs at home and now in the Pilbara it is all road works and construction,” Mikey said. “I might not have taken her to Paris to propose, but I think she will remember it for the rest of her life.” And so might the odd passing motorist from that September night.

Blustery conditions don’t slow little athletes in 2013 finale By Rob Krueger In the final night of athletics competition for season 2013, 69 athletes competed in blustery conditions, making it the hardest it’s been all year to break personal bests. Despite this, five competitors still finished the year strongly by breaking four PBs each. They were Samuel Carter, Gaby Dow, Adam Giltrow, Jake Levey and Mia Warren. One of the night’s most fun events was when the junior sprinters took to the100m sprints as Darcy Gray backed up interschool carnival victory to record the fastest time of 17.24sec. Mia Warren clocked a 17.76sec time, while Shayden Richardson came in with a time of 17.90sec. The older kids tackled the 200m with Benjamin Cusworth the fastest at 34.64sec, Adam Giltrow second
with 35.89sec and Isobel Norris flying the flag for the girls with a time of 35.93secs. 10-year-old Caitlin Walsham took out the honours over the 400m sprint, recording a time of 1min20.1sec, closely followed by the big improver over the backend of the season Adam Giltrow with a time of 1min20.6sec and Kiran Byles with a time of 1min21.8sec. Darcy Gray showed that he is more than just a speedy runner, with a PB in the discus of 13.23m, while Ben Davis broke the 10m mark for the first time. Chevil-Jay Clarke threw a PB throw of 8.63m, while Harmony Leo also recorded a season best of 9.54m in the U8 girls. Adam Giltrow and Maddie Harding managed to break the 1m mark in the high jump to both record season bests of 1.09m and 1.03m respectively. Mia Warren came close to the magic 3m mark in the long
jump, recording a leap of 2.98m for the age group season record, while Emily Krueger crept closer with a season best jump of 2.88m. The Triple jump has seen the greatest improvement over the season with Ben Cusworth jumping over 7m (7.62m). But the best PB on the night went to Cameron Briggs, who notched up a 6.47m jump, while Keisha James recorded the longest girl jump at 6.76m. The shot put saw the girls improve the most this week, with Sommer Dew closing in on the 5m barrier
with her best throw of the season of 4.86m. Hannah Gibbs cleared the 4m for the first time with a throw of 4.07m. The turbo javelin saw Kiran Byles take out the season record on the night with a throw of 19.34m, while Connor Jordon took out the U8 boys with another season record throw of 14.55m. In the girls, Harmony Leo broke the 10m mark with a throw of 10.26m, while Georgia Krueger snuck into the 9m category with a throw of 9m on the dot. Well done to all competitors during 2013.

Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report By Jenni Gates After last weeks’ fishing action, I thought there’d be not much to write today, but there has been a continuation of some great catches in the Exmouth waters. The reef fishing has been brilliant for some anglers as good tides matched good weather and resulted in happy times. Mick the Greek was out with Neil Silver and hooked up to some ripper red emperor, along with some serious cod and other reef species. Mick loves his fishing and doesn’t mind a fresh feed of Exmouth’s finest seafood delights either. Neil Silver visits Exmouth regularly throughout the year for fishing holidays and while he mainly targets billfish for tag and release, he also enjoys getting in to the reef fishing with Mick. The ruby jobfish have also been a great catch for anglers this week targeting the deep water dropping. In fact, red seems to be the colour of the week, with some catching crimson sea perch off the reefs, chinamon fish being caught around the islands, coral trout being speared in the gulf and also coronation trout being caught on lures in the shallows. Generally speaking, if it is red, it is a good eating fish, and all of the previous mentioned are great eating. If you could catch the fish of your choice from Exmouth, what would it be? Many people come in to the store saying they simply want to catch a fish. Narrowing it down a little can help you to be more successful. Picking tides, places, bait, lures, rod and reel combination, time of day, and method of approach, are all factors to take in to consideration. Then, it’s also a good idea to know what you plan to do if you catch a fish!
Have you got gloves to handle the fish if it is to be handled? Do you have pliers to retrieve the hook easily? Do you have ice and something to keep the fish fresh in case you want to take it home? Do you know how to iki-jimi the fish if you are going to keep it? Fishing can be great fun, rewarding, relaxing and enjoyable, especially if you plan ahead. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to drop in to Tackle World and ask for further information on what is biting where. We have already got some samples of small black marlin fin clippings for DNA testing, but we need more. So if you are going out to target billfish, please help us to help science by grabbing a small piece of fin from black marlin <50kg. All we need is the approximate location and size of the fish, your name and the clipping kept cold (preferably frozen) in a ziplock bag. Bring it in to the store and we will put it in solution with all the details to assist with research on the black marlin species.

Tequiras go into netball finals as hot favourites By Ben Leahy
Dampier Falcons soar to softball premiership By Claire Moran The Dampier Falcons have made a name for themselves in 2013 as they passed through the season with an unbeaten record and Saturday’s softball grand final proved no exception as they ran out winners over the Karratha Storm. After a team talk from league president Barrie Sargeant, Dampier took to the pitch for the West Pilbara Softball Organisation women’s softball Grand Final at Bulgarra Oval as the fielding team in the opening dig. Back after injury, Abigail Eckford took her well-deserved spot in the pitchers circle and, true to form, had Storms batters on their toes. She had the first Storm batter Nikki Brough hit straight to Charmaine Joseph at third, who easily made the play and got Nikki out at one. But then Kalisa Storey took a walk to first before Elysia Canning pushed her around to second, getting the ball out beyond Dampier’s infielders. Kyla Thomas next drove the ball perfectly out to left field for her runners to progress and get their first score on the board. However, Dampier continued to field aggressively and closed the Storm out before they could build on their score. With Dampier now batting, Jamie-Lee Paterson found a perfect gap in front of centre field and sent the ball straight into it. Storm fielder Nikki Brough charged it down to take the catch, only for the ball to pop straight back out of her mitt and see Jamie safe at first. Dampier then continued to keep Nikki moving in centre field, while their runners had no fear of stealing bases either. Then Lynette Upton stepped up with loaded bases, hitting a perfect flat ball straight past the Storm’s infielders to Jo get herself to second base and push her runners across the home plate. The Storm innings had set a trend for the rest of the match as the valiant underdogs continually rallied but could not quite match the pressure brought to bear by Dampier.
It was a trend that was to continue in the match for the next few innings, as Dampier managed to ease out to a small but handy lead over the Storm. Then came the fifth dig that soon proved to be the most critical in the game with the Storm struggling to get runners onto bases. Dampier got the Storm’s Kyla Thomas and Adi Voigt out before they could get to first bag. Teammate Jo Leo next managed to hit a magnificent ball into centre field to get around to second base. But when her teammate Tonina Parsons hit a perfect flat ball directly between short stop and third, Dampier’s Lynette Upton was all over it and made an impressive out at first base. With Dampier fielding stronger than ever, the momentum carried over into their batting, putting the pressure on Storm pitcher Jo Leo to get strikes. Dampiermanaged to smash the ball into the outfield, while their runners kept stealing bases when opportunity arose. With Storm struggling to keep them out, Kyla Thomas took over as the team’s pitcher. And despite strong play from Dampier she eventually closed the innings with Elysia Canning catching Charmaine Joseph’s right field hit. The final two digs finished almost as quickly as they started with both teams fielding confidently and consistently. Lynette Upton remained unbeatable at short stop for Dampier with everyone struggling to get the ball past her. Although Kalisa Storey and Elysia Canning both smashed three bag hits to push a few runs across the plate for the Storm, it wasn’t enough for them to catch Dampier’s lead. And ultimately, the Storm could not quite match it with the strong Dampier side, who became 2013 Premiers after a number of near misses in recent years. The WPSO and Karratha Softball Association would like to thank all players, coaches, scorers and volunteers, who helped to make it a really enjoyable season – and hope to see you all again next season.
The Tequiras 1 team will head into today’s A1-Division Karratha Netball Association grand final as firm favourites, having passed through the 2013 season undefeated. The Tequiras will meet Cougars 1 in the big game on the Karratha Leisureplex’s Court 3 at 8:30pm on September 21. The Cougars earned their place in the grand final by beating the Blades 1 team 48-40 in their semi final playoff last Monday September 16. The association’s netballers not only game together to celebrate in ruby red dresses but to recognise the season’s high achievers. Toia Tiwha from the Sierras was the big winner on the night as she claimed

Shannon Tunstead and Anna Wood shone in a field of 22 committed athletes, who ventured to Millstream Chichester National Park last weekend for the 2nd Annual Pilbara Off Road Triathlon. Shannon took out the men’s Nickol Bay Triathlon Club event in 1hr14min, while Anna led the women home in just under 1hr30min. Held in conjunction with the Department of Parks and Wildlife, the off road race is a special event on the local triathlon calendar as athletes pull out their mountain bikes and trail runners to tackle a beautiful bush course. And conditions in Millstream were ideal for the start of the race as the sun rose over Deep Reach Pool for the 600m swim. Emerging from the water, competitors next took on an 18km mountain bike course across dedicated bike trails before turning onto Snappy Gum Drive. They then crossed the water at Fortesque River before heading into the hills leading to Crossing Pool. Getting off their bikes, competitors commenced a challenging 4km trail run, which led them through riverbeds and over flood plains before finishing at The Homestead. The NBTC wishes to thank Millstream head ranger Neil Brougham for his support of the event. The club is also now seeking committee members to assist in the running of its 201314 Summer Triathlon Season. To contact the club please visit www. nickolbaytriclub.com.
