Discovery Holiday Parks last week completed the second stage of a $150m expansion in Onslow designed to accommodate workers from the Chevron-operated Wheatstone gas project.

Doing it for his daughter By Shelly McEwan Life is tough as a single parent, but Pilbara resident Ryan McEwan is not letting that stop him from striving for his goals. Ryan works full time in addition to being a “MAD” (mum and dad) to his three-year-old daughter Abigail. His days are taken up dropping his daughter into day care, working, cooking, cleaning, food shopping, buying toddler’s clothes and being the best father in the world to Abigail.
But as if that wasn’t enough, Ryan also found time to study by correspondence, receiving his Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety from Edith Cowan University at a graduation ceremony at the Perth Convention Centre in September. Ryan said the best part of the graduation was when he crossed the floor at the Convention Centre to receive his certificate and he heard Abigail calling, “Daddy, daddy,” from the audience. Indian Ocean rim nations meet in Perth WA Senator Alan Eggleston has hailed a meeting in Perth this month of Ministers from countries bordering the Indian Ocean Rim as an important forum for trade and defence in the North West. With Australia assuming the role of chair of the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation at the meeting, Senator Eggleston hopes the opportunity as is taken to create stronger partnerships between the Indian Ocean nations =. “Given that Perth is Australia’s Indian Ocean capital, it is highly appropriate that the meetings are taking place here,” Senator Eggleston said. “These meetings also provide
an excellent opportunity for us to showcase what our State has to offer in the international arena. “Australia’s new role as Chair of the IOR ARC will provide a valuable opportunity to focus domestic and international attention on the Indian Ocean rim. “We must use this occasion to … strengthen our security, trade, research and cultural links with our IOR neighbours and establish and support institutional structures and mechanisms to support the common interests of Australian and IOR countries.” Senator Eggleston said that a collaborative approach is the most effective way to combat the challenges facing the region.

Zoe, Just Dandy Digital “Moving forward, Australia’s key focus therefore needs to be on raising the profile of IOR ARC and increasing government and business opportunities in the region, while also focusing our attention on the protection of our own resources, particularly
off Western Australia’s North West coast.” Senator Eggleston has long been calling for Australia to base more of its military assets in WA’s North West to protect the region’s multibillion dollar oil and gas industry and fishery
grounds.

Accommodation group Discovery Holiday Parks last week completed the second stage of a $150 million expansion in Onslow designed to house workers from the Chevronoperated Wheatstone gas project. The completion of the second stage brings the total rooms at the property to 300 after an earlier $60 million investment in stage one delivered 96 studio rooms, which have been occupied since August. On completion of the final stage, the park will offer up to 880 rooms. Discovery chief executive Grant Wilckens said it would help ease the housing shortage in Onslow. “The expansion will help address local accommodation issues and make a significant contribution to the local community,” he said. “We are delighted to be able to significantly invest in the local community with the park now employing more than 60 staff, not to mention the additional follow-
on investment additional visitors will bring.” The Onslow population is expected to triple in size from 700 to 2200 by 2016 as a result of the Wheatstone project. Some locals are concerned the cost of rental accommodation in Onslow could subsequently rise as high as those in Karratha and Hedland, where rents rival prices in Perth and Sydney. Wilckens said the modular design of Discovery’s new accommodation park allowed it to be easily built-up to meet future demands in Onslow or other regional centres. “We believe this is a model that can be replicated in other regional locations which continue to experience accommodation shortages,” Wilckens said. “Our novel approach involved installation of beautifully designed modular rooms, enabling us to rapidly ramp up to meet client requirements.” The project includes new facilities such as a 320-seat dining room and expanded kitchen, conference rooms and gym and bar facilities. Headquartered in South Australia, Discovery Holiday Parks owns more than 30 parks across Australia, providing accommodation to tourists and long-term housing customers, including resource companies.

Newly elected Member for Durack Melissa Price was officially sworn into office by the Governor General on November 12. The Liberal Party member was elected to the Federal Parliament for the first time in September’s general election and, despite being a backbencher, has promised to raise the electorate’s issues with her party’s powerbrokers. “I want the people of Durack who have issues and concerns to bring them to me so I can take those issues to the decision-makers in Canberra and seek resolution,” Price said. “I will be standing up for regional WA on critical issues I raised during the election, such as aged care facilities and improving major road infrastructure in Durack.” Earlier this month, Price made her first visit to the Pilbara since the election when she caught up with
new Shire of Roebourne president Peter Long and chief executive officer Chris Adams. She has also opened electoral offices in Geraldton and Broome and is sure to be one of the most well-travelled MPs before her term is up, with the Durack electorate being the biggest in the country.

Roo photo a winner for tourism Port Hedland resident Emma Robinson’s snap with a rescued kangaroo is the first winner in the high-profile My Pilbara Adventure campaign, being run to boost tourism in the region. The photo of Emma posing on a Pilbara outcrop with kangaroo Maddy was the most popular choice on the My Pilbara Adventure Facebook page. Emma, a carer who helps rehabilitate and release injured wildlife, said she was delighted her snap had won her the prize of a skydive, donated by the Wickham Skydivers Club. “I have never won anything before and it was so easy,” she said. The tandem jump with chief instructor Ralph Ford will see Emma jumping from 8000 feet to land at Point Samson Beach. With the Pilbara economy heavily reliant on oil and gas and mining, Wickham Skydivers Club’s Jo Ball said the club was keen to play a part in boosting regional tourism. “This is a fab competition, and we are delighted to be providing its first prize,” she said. Anyone interested in entering the competition, needs to “like” the My Pilbara Adventure Facebook page, and then upload a picture of something they have done or would like to do, along with a brief description. Each winner is determined by the number of “likes” their post receives on the page, with the next prize to be announced soon. The My Pilbara Adventure promotion is run by the Pilbara Development Commission with the main prize, a 12-day trip around the region, still up for grabs. Entries close on November 30 for the main prize, which will be drawn on December 4. For more information contact Carolyn Biar at the Pilbara Development Commission on 1800 843 745.

From home base to a commercial space By Kylah Morrison Florist Mel Thompson’s Red Earth Flowers started off like many small businesses in Australia in that she launched it from her family home surrounded by piles of washing and kids raiding the pantry. Indeed, more than 80 per cent of Australian businesses are family-operated, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Yet a growth in sales has led Mel to recently confront another familiar problem to many small businesses – the move from being home-based into a commercially rented space. As Mel has found, this is an especially challenging transition for start-up businesses in the Pilbara, where rents often rival those in Perth and Sydney. She said she eventually chose a space to rent in Centro Shopping Centre, but it took her nine months to decide on the location. “I could have secured a bigger shop for the same price in Pelago, but there would not be the same foot traffic,” she said. “If people have to get out of their car specifically for that transaction, more often they won’t.
Florist Mel Thompson “Look at [how they tend to instead choose drive-thrus, such as at] McDonald’s or the Thirsty Camel.” Mel said her experiences highlight the value that a business incubator, such as the proposed $38 million Karratha Business Park, would play in helping start-ups get on their feet by providing subsidised rental spaces. In the absence of a business park, however, Mel recommends other small businesses take their time to find the right rental
property because she believes location is critical in generating high volumes of foot traffic. She also suggests home-based businesses look closely at their potential for growth before choosing to rent. “Rent is really high [in Karratha] and going on what we’re currently doing, we will just cover it,” she said. Yet she also foresees the only way to further growth is by establishing a retail space to display her flowers. “Buying flowers is a very visual process,” she said. And although Red Earth Flowers has an engaging website, she said her customers still crave personal contact. She estimates 60 per cent of people who call her to buy flowers have been on her website first, yet online purchases only account for 10 per cent of traffic to the site. Then there is the perhaps one of the most appealing aspects – the chance to escape the 24/7 nature of most home-based business. “I [hope I] won’t have endless phone calls after hours, and I’ll be able to employ the people I need to nurture the growth of Red Earth Flowers,” Mel said.

The Pilbara can provide insights into the evolution of life on earth. Picture: Rob Whitehead
3.5 billion-year-old Pilbara bacteria a sign of early life Evidence of ancient bacteria dating back almost 3.5 billion years have been found in the Pilbara region by an international team including UWA Research assistant professor David Wacey. The research, published this week in the journal Astrobiology, revealed the well-preserved remnants of a complex ecosystem in 3.5 billion-year-old sedimentary rock. Professor Wacey said the find would help scientists reconstruct the Earth’s earliest biosphere. “The Pilbara region of Western Australia is one of the rare geological regions that provides insight into the early evolution of life on Earth,” he said. “Mound-like deposits created by ancient bacteria called stromatolites and microfossils of bacteria have previously been discovered in this region.
“However, a phenomenon called microbially induced sedimentary structures, or MISS, had not previously been seen in rocks of this great age. “The significance of MISS is that they not only demonstrate the presence of life, but also the presence of whole microbial ecosystems that could co-ordinate with one another to respond to changes in their environment. “A common example would be the binding together of sediment grains by microbes to prevent their erosion by water currents.” The discovery shows that complex matforming microbial communities existed 300 million years earlier than previously thought. Scientists hope to also discover MISS using the Mars rovers, in the hope of discovering signs of life elsewhere in the solar system.

Tour Ngarluma culture on Google Earth
Development opportunities in the Pilbara. Seven lots available in South Hedland Town Centre.
Next time you log on to Google Earth, you can do more than just look at images of the jagged hills and plains of the Pilbara landscape. You can now also explore the cultural heritage of the Ngarluma people. The Ngarluma Ngurra: Aboriginal Culture On The Map project launched earlier this month and uses Google Earth to link historic texts, photographs, audio recordings and films with locations in the Pilbara. This allows internet users to scroll over the Ngarluma people’s traditional lands, which stretch across the entire Shire of Roebourne, to discover indigenous artworks and videos of elders relating tales about the country. Elder Reg Sambo said he hoped the project, funded by Ngarluma Tharndu Karrungu Maya Limited in partnership with Perth art gallery FORM
and Google, would help safeguard his culture. “I want to leave this story on tape for the next generation, so that they know the story of this place,” Reg said. With many of the more than 30 traditional languages spoken in the Pilbara now endangered, a initial aim of the project was to record the connection between the Ngarluma people and their land. This involved recording the visits of Ngarluma elders Pansy Hicks, Reg Sambo, Jim Fredericks, Frank and Ricky Smith, and Keith, Jill, Jeannie and Rebecca Churnside to sites on-country. The elders then made the decision to make the recordings available to the public. They said they hoped community members would better understand their culture by seeing them tell songs, myths, stories, and poetry about place
names, ceremonies, customs, beliefs and superstitions on the actual land that inspired those oral traditions. Rebecca Moore from the Google Earth Outreach program said she hopes more indigenous people follow in the footsteps of the Ngarluma. “A picture is worth a thousand words? Well I think flying around in Google Earth is worth a million words,” Rebecca said. “You take an abstract idea, like deforestation of the Amazon, or territorial sovereignty of indigenous peoples, and you make it incredibly concrete. “People get quite emotional, and it galvanises support for the causes that these groups are advocating on behalf of.” For more information on the Ngarluma Ngurra: Aboriginal Culture On The Map project visit form.net.au.

Did you just feel that? Fracking and tremors By Jeff Haworth
within 500m of an identified fault.
A question I am sometimes asked by people interested in hydraulic fracturing, or fracking as it is commonly known, is could fracturing shale and tight rocks deep underground cause surface tremors or seismic events?
Companies must also design their wells to meet international best practice standards to ensure casings can withstand any unexpected seismic activity.
The likelihood of a fracking activity causing a seismic event that could be felt by us is extremely low. However, the Department of Mines and Petroleum has regulations in place to ensure petroleum companies address seismicity as part of their riskbased approach to fracking activities. Companies must submit a geological report of the proposed area for fracking before any activity is approved or rejected. This report includes seismic survey results which provide information on any faults in the area. As part of adopting a riskbased approach to fracking activities, it’s unlikely a company would apply to fracture an area

Jeff Haworth says the likelihood of a fracking activity causing a seismic event that could be felt is extremely low.
During a fracking activity, there are three realtime monitoring techniques companies can employ to manage seismic events: direct pressure monitoring, microseismicity monitoring and tiltometers.
Microseismic monitoring shows how the targeted shale or tight rock is being fractured, whereas tiltometers detect very sensitive seismic movements, which may happen as a result of fracking. Typically, seismic events under three on the Richter scale cannot be felt at the surface. If, during real-time monitoring of a fracking activity, the unlikely event of a microseismic event
of 1.5 or more did happen, the activity should be stopped and reviewed to ensure it is controlled. Due to Australia being situated in the middle of a tectonic plate, Geoscience Australia says the location ensures some stability and spares the country from the effects of large earthquakes. Refurbished Kmart store launches in Hedland Kmart’s Pilbara stores in Karratha and South Hedland have launched their annual Wishing Tree Appeal drives this month as they seek to collect gifts for families in need. The appeal launch in South Hedland on November 12 was also used to mark the completion of a major refurbishment of the store. The store now has wider aisles and a new layout to reflect changing consumer demands in the Pilbara town. “My whole team is genuinely thrilled with the store’s refreshing new look,” store manager Charmaine Wilson said. The South Hedland refurbishment is part of a strategy by Kmart to invest in its stores across the country and follows on from a multi-million dollar refit of the Karratha store in September. Karratha Kmart manager Chris Melton said at the time that the Pilbara stores were chosen to be among the first Kmart outlets to be refitted because of the potential for growth in the region. “They brought us forward on that list because of the amount of investment that is going into town, and the Government’s commitment to increase the population with Royalties for Regions and the Pilbara Cities idea,” Melton said.
Kmart Karratha manager Chris Melton with staff members after the store’s refit in September. “So we wanted to give these customers a shopping experience equivalent to the big cities.” Melton said the store refurbishments were also used to change the store layouts to reflect changing demographics in the region, shifting from fly-in, fly-out workers to more families. “Departments, which haven’t
traditionally been strong for us, such as kidswear and toys, are really picking up because there are a lot more families coming in,” he said. “The outdoor and indoor living has also become very big due to all the new houses going up around Karratha and people looking to deck them out.”
The Pilbara Kmart stores are also hoping to receive more gifts for their Wishing Tree Appeal than ever before. More than six million gifts donated since the appeal began in 1988 have been distributed to families in need by Kmart’s charity partner, The Salvation Army. This year, the appeal organisers

hope to collect 500,000 gifts for people in need. Dr Bruce Redman from The Salvation Army said that onein-two people who visit the charity’s centres will not be able to afford gifts for family members and friends this Christmas. “Christmas is a hard time for people doing it tough,” Redman said. “With … help we can bring hope and joy to Australians in need this holiday season.” For more information on the Wishing Tree Appeal, visit your local Kmart store.
Gift wrapping also available for a gold coin donation. At Centro Karratha, we’ve taken the stress out of your Christmas shopping by offering free postage* on any gifts sent within Australia. Simply purchase your gifts between Monday 4th November and Sunday 24th November and visit the Post N Pak customer service area (near Kmart) between Thursday 14th November and Sunday 24th November. Get your share of community grants Community groups will benefit from more than $13,000 of funding in the latest round of the Shire of Roebourne’s quarterly Community Grants and Contributions Scheme. The scheme provides opportunities for groups or individuals to apply for funding in either the sports and recreation or community arts and culture categories. The Shire has committed $13,109 this quarter to support community initiatives including purchasing new equipment, developing club facilities and hosting community events. Shire of Roebourne chief executive officer Chris Adams said the scheme was designed to foster high standards of community service. “Community and sporting groups play a vital role in our community and ensure that the Shire of Roebourne is not just a fantastic place to live and work, but also play,” he said. “These quarterly grants are a fantastic way for groups and individuals to access additional funds to supplement necessary operating costs and deliver high-standard programs. “This year the Shire has pledged $52,000 alone through the Community Grants and Contributions Scheme.” The latest successful grants applicants include Baynton West Primary School, the Pilbara Community Legal Service and the Millars Well Children’s Service. Sporting groups to receive grants included the V Swans, Burrup Mountain Bike Club, West Pilbara Cricket Association and the Karratha Little Athletics, Water Polo and Basketball associations. Applications for the next round of funding close on February 21, 2014.

Soggy doggies in chase for awards Four Pilbara businesses last night found out if they had snagged a prestigious prize at the 2013 WA Regional Small Business Awards, held at Perth’s Hyatt Regency Hotel. Karratha Soggidog, Archipelago Arts, Hedland Bare Essentials and Real Employment for Aboriginal People (REFAP) were all finalists in the awards, up against the best small businesses in regional WA, from the Kimberley down to the Great Southern. Small Business Development Corporation chief executive officer David Eaton said the awards gave regional
residents a chance to showcase their businesses to a larger audience. “Small business is a major contributor to our state’s economic prosperity, directly and through local employment generation,” he said. “It is a sector to be congratulated and this event is one to be celebrated.” The four Pilbara businesses were nominated in three categories. REFAP was a finalist in the Best Aboriginal Business category for its work in securing flexible employment for indigenous workers in the mining industry.
The nomination caps off a memorable year for the company, with co-founder Triscilla Holborow also a finalist at The Deadly awards in Sydney in September. Mobile pet washing service Karratha Soggidog and lingerie retailer Hedland Bare Essentials were nominated in the Best Home-based Business category. Archipelago Arts, meanwhile, was nominated in the Best Micro Business category after running another successful Cossack Art Awards in 2013. Check out next week’s Echo to see how the local businesses fared at the awards.

Atlas lends a helping hand Hedland community groups can now seek funding from mining company Atlas Iron in round four of its Helping Hands grants program. Atlas Helping Hands is designed to help deliver longterm social, environmental and economic benefits to the Pilbara communities in which its employees live. In the past, the program has supported the North Pilbara Football League, non-profit group Many Rivers Microfinance and events such as the North West Festival and breakfast program at Strelley Community School. Atlas managing director Ken Brinsden said the company is on the lookout for more groups to work with. “We are inviting not-forprofit organisations based in Port Hedland and surrounding communities to apply for an Atlas Helping Hands grant of up to $5000, which they can use to support the valuable work they do,” Ken said. “There are many community organisations, particularly volunteer groups, doing a lot of important work. “By supporting these organisations with the Helping Hands grants, we can play a part in making sure the community stays strong.” Atlas launched the Helping Hands grants in February and recently also held a Community Day in which its staff downed

A: Building a house suited to the Pilbara climate is completely different to building a house for the Perth metropolitan area, so your builder should be familiar with designing and building in the north-west. The home should have all the features needed to respond to the local conditions, such as wide verandas, airconditioning, ceiling fans and external solar blinds. Plus, if you are renting the property fully furnished, you want to make sure the house is finished with furnishings and treatments suited to the Pilbara, as well as appropriate outdoor landscaping. If you get the chance, visit the Alcock Brown-Neaves Group’s display home at 13 Bowerbird Drive in Tambrey, which is part of the new community estate.
BRAND NEW HOMES FOR SALE OR LEASE
This house will show you some of the features and finishes you should aim for when building in the Pilbara and is an example of what can be achieved with strong design. Finding tradies in the Pilbara can be an issue for many builders, particularly if they are not already established in the area, so make sure you speak to someone reputable. Kit homes or prefabricated houses have been popular in the north-west too, and this is an option you may wish to explore, but make sure you don’t compromise on quality. My best piece of advice is to do your homework, and if you need a hand, the team at Investor Assist is happy to help. Building an investment opportunity can be a very rewarding experience, and there is plenty of advantages to be found investing in the north-west. Got a question? Investor Assist general manager Peter Gianoli will answer your questions about financial security through property investment. Email AskPeter@ investorassist.com.au.

Illustrator and author James Foley had Port Hedland and Newman school students smiling and laughing earlier this month when he dropped in to inspire them to pursue their creative talents. As a professional cartoonist and author and illustrator of In the Lion, a picture book that was nominated for several children’s book awards, Foley’s natural humour helped bring out the students’ enthusiasm for drawing. He spent three days in Hedland and one in Newman, conducting writing and drawing workshops for primary school students, as part of the Pilbara Week and Talented Young Writers Program partnership between BHP Billiton and The Literature Centre. Fellow WA author AJ Betts also visited Hedland and Newman as part of the program, giving presentations to high school students. Betts’s latest novel for young adults Zac and Mia has been published in eight international editions. The Literature Centre director and founder Lesley Reece
said it was exciting to be able to bring two of the state’s most talented authors to the Pilbara. “It is not enough to just teach students to read,” Lesley said. “The work we do promotes a love of reading and writing, which goes on to influence other aspects of their schooling,” BHP Billiton Iron Ore head of community and indigenous affairs Richard O’Connell said the workshops gave Pilbara students a unique opportunity to work with successful authors. “Engaging young people with education and enriching the lives of students in the Pilbara is a key part of our commitment to the communities we are part of,” he said. Last year, BHP Billiton committed $600,000 to The Literature Centre under a three-year partnership. This program plans to bring successful Australian authors and illustrators to more than 10 primary and secondary schools in the region to inspire a passion for reading and writing.

Karratha girl on song in Phantom Former Karratha resident Natalie Jackson is practising her Italian and her diva tantrums as she prepares to take a lead role in the WA production of The Phantom of the Opera from Wednesday night. Natalie will be performing as lead soprano Carlotta in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical at Perth’s Limelight Theatre this November and December. Based on the French novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra by Gaston Leroux, the musical follows Natalie’s character Carlotta as she becomes jealous of another soprano, Christine, who is a source of obsession for a mysterious, disfigured musical genius. “Carlotta has held the role of lead soprano for many years and believes she will for many more,” Natalie said. “She’s focused on ensuring she’s always the centre of attention and is very unhappy when Christine begins to take her place. “One of the main challenges is trying to sing Italian passages at fast speed. “Carlotta also sings in a very high register, and I’m worried she will attract all the dogs in the neighbourhood!” Acting for the past 15 years, Natalie has performed extensively with the Limelight and Stirling Theatres, Playlovers and the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of WA. She even previously appeared as Christine in a 1998 Ken Hill production of Phantom. Ken was behind the original stage version of The Phantom of

FIFO workers looking to trim dead weight More than 600 Pilbara fly-in, fly-out workers are nearing the end of a 12-week program to trim their waistlines and set them on the path to a healthier lifestyle. The workers residing at ESS Support Services Worldwide’s mining villages in Karratha, Newman, Hedland and Tom Price-Paraburdoo kicked off the 12week Tastelife Weight Loss Challenge on August 26. Beginning with a personal health assessment to measure blood pressure, waistlines and body weight, the workers have since been devising healthy eating plans and attending group fitness classes and lifestyle seminars with cooking and shopping tips. In the past eight years, the program has helped 8000 mining industry
workers shed a collective 12.5 tonnes of body weight. Tastelife national manager Catherine Walker said the program’s popularity is growing each year, especially among FIFO workers. “The challenge is a vital program to motivate FIFO workers to live healthier, including losing weight,” she said. “These workers often struggle with unusual working hours, shift work and long rosters, such as four weeks at work and only one week off, so maintaining a healthy weight can be hard. “The challenge focuses on weight loss and holistic health and nutrition education to help workers adopt a long-term healthy lifestyle on site and at home. The 12-week-long program [is designed] to encourage habit forming
behaviour [and] change and drive motivation.” This year, 1784 ESS workers across Australia signed up to the challenge, which winds up on Monday. “Last year 3872kg were lost by 1412 FIFO workers across Australia. This year we are hoping Karratha, Newman, Port Hedland and Tom Price-Paraburdoo workers will help us beat this target,” Catherine said. Last year’s challenge winner, Dave Law, lost 24.5 per cent of his body weight during the 12-week program. The exercise classes in the Tastelife challenge cater for all fitness levels, including those just starting out, those who need motivation, and different exercises for those who don’t like the gym.

Chopper rolls into town By Tamara Binamat We have already warned you that comedian Heath Franklin is returning to the Pilbara this Wednesday November 20 to perform his stage performance as notorious criminal figure Chopper Reid. But the act is so much fun, we thought we’d better remind you. And besides, Franklin says his show goes down best with regional audiences. “Chopper was kind of a no bullshit guy and while the character is a bit of an intellectual he doesn’t lean on it too much,” he said. “He’s got a real mongrel side to him as well that I think sums a lots of Australians up.” Franklin said his Chopper impersonation started from watching YouTube the film Chopper too many times. “There was about five years when everyone was running around trying to be Austin Powers and I was the one guy doing Chopper quotes,” he said. “A big part of the reason it all took off so quickly was because when we were doing The Ronnie Johns Half Hour where a lot of the Chopper jokes came from. “It was about the same time that YouTube was kicking off. It was perfect timing.” Franklin said it was during this time that he met the late Chopper Reid himself. “He was a bit … what’s the right word? – grumpy,” he said.

“He was a little bit surly but positive about the whole thing. “At the time he was quite insistent I should cut my ears off if I’m going to do a proper job! “But the thing I really liked about the Chopper character is that you never know where fact ends and the fiction begins with Chopper.” Franklin show at the Tambrey Tavern will be his first Australian set since Chopper Reid’s passing on October 9. “[The show] is a little bit more of a tribute now,” Franklin said. “He was larger than life guy and
he created a lot of mythology around himself and I feel like I’m continuing that for him.

christmas parties
by April Butt
aprilbnutrition@gmail.com 0406 490 614
Surviving the silly season Christmas is fast approaching and celebrations are already underway, with many festive parties kicking off around town. This is a time of year when even the best of us struggle with discipline. But by maintaining healthy habits, not only will you save yourself from undoing all of your fitness and nutrition work during 2013, but it will help you jump into 2014 feeling better than ever. Now, I need to tell you all I am not a complete party pooper. I do believe that there is a time and a place for breaking all of the rules and enjoying good food and fine wine. The soul value, as I like to call it, of these kinds of celebrations far outweighs the nutritional value at times. But given that there are so many celebrations at this time of year, you are not doing yourself any favours by indulging in all of them. Here are a few tips for surviving the silly season: 1. The tipple Alcohol seems to be the centre point of any celebration these days, especially when it is Christmas time. It would also be the worst offender for damaging your health and wellbeing. So if you choose to drink, keep it minimal – you don’t want to be that person dancing on tables or falling down the stairs anyway, right? Try alcohol-free drinks that are refreshing and tasty and available from most bars, such as soda with fresh lime and
Jan, Lisa and Delany all decked in Christmas colours. mint or soda and tonic with a slice of lemon. If having alcohol, alternate one alcoholic beverage with one alcohol-free beverage. Try waiting until you have eaten the nibbles or dinner before you start to drink because alcohol increases your appetite and can lead to you eating more. Get real with yourself - if you know you have no self-control once arriving at an event, opt to be the designated driver. 2. The feast When food is provided at no charge, humans have a funny habit of eating much more than their body requires. This, in conjunction with alcohol, is a recipe for disaster. Eating and drinking while being fairly sedentary, coupled with the potential hangover that prevents you from exercising the next morning, equals more food going in
than being burnt off. Do your research and find out what food will be available at the event and from there, make a decision about what you will be eating and stick to it. Never arrive hungry – have a substantial meal or snack an hour before the event so you can easily wave away the hostess carrying around the sausage rolls. Keep yourself hydrated (with water) as dehydration is often confused with hunger, causing us to eat more than we require. Start the following day fresh – but if the wheels fall off for one night, don’t let the whole wagon fall to pieces. Try to regain your routine immediately with a lot of fresh and raw produce and some moderate exercise to cleanse your system and to remind yourself how good it feels to be healthy.
Rustic furniture up for grabs Christmas is a time to take joy in the company and good health of our loved ones – and that includes our animal friends. To help raise funds for Karratha non-profit organisation Saving Animals From Euthanasia, an all-day raffle will be held at Centro Shopping Centre on Saturday, November 23, with great outdoor furniture up for grabs. The raffle’s first prize is a full-size wine barrel that can be used as a feature piece bar table. Second prize is a threequarter barrel and third prize is a half barrel, both of which can hold pot plants or beers for your next party. The barrels are from a
winery in Western Australia’s south-west and are made from European oak. SAFE supporter Malcolm Anderson of NMA Haulage donated the barrels after seeing how popular they were as furniture in the south-west.
SAFE helps find new homes for abandoned pets, with group founder Sue Hedley recently being named as a nominee for the Horizon Power Leadership & Innovation Prize at the 2013 Regional Achievement and Community Awards in October.

Olympians share tips with Karratha juniors By Matt Keogh Two world-class Australian athletes put the region’s future stars through their paces at an expert coaching clinic at Karratha’s Bulgarra Oval on Tuesday, November 5. On an unseasonably hot afternoon buzzing with flies, a group of keen junior athletes from the Karratha Little Athletics Club turned out to welcome Kim Mickle, a recent silver medallist in javelin at the 2013 World Athletic Championships, and Ben Offereins, an accomplished 400m runner at the Olympic and Commonwealth games.
Kim and Ben started out in their chosen sports at little athletics clubs and were keen to share their stories and tips with the Karratha girls and boys. Ben began the session by taking the group through new warm-up drills that the kids found easy to master, but the parents had much more difficulty getting the hang of. Kim ran a great session with the younger athletes on the techniques for the turbo javelin, then amazed the older kids with a casual 45m throw of a competition javelin – not bad given her record is 66.6m. Kim also gave some very detailed coaching to the children, parents
Little athletes take leap forward with funding
Easternwell’s chief executive officer Darren Greer said the company looks to support Pilbara groups where there is a real need for assistance. “Organisations like Karratha Little Athletics Association provide essential but often overlooked services to the community,” Darren said. “Easternwell funding will assist in ensuring they continue to have a strong presence in the community now and into the future.” The Easternwell Community Grants program awards $40,000 spread across two rounds of grants biannually. Applications for the next round of community grants will open in March. Eligible groups may apply for funding up to $2000. For more information, visit easternwell.com.au.

Community groups in the Pilbara have received more than $5000 through Easternwell’s community grants program, with much-needed funds going to the North West Roller Derby Association, Karratha Senior High School and Karratha Little Athletics Association. Robert Kruger, the president of the Karratha Little Athletics Association, said the club runs weekly training and competition nights for 120 children between the ages of six and 14. “This funding will allow us to improve our current services and expand our reach to engage new junior athletes in surrounding regional towns, including Roebourne,” Rob said. “Little Athletics promotes healthy and active living and assists junior athletes in building their confidence. “We also encourage community involvement through active parent participation.” Drilling and well-servicing company Easternwell has been providing financial and social assistance to communities across the country since the launch of its Community Grants program in 2011. Since its inception, the program has provided more than $90,000 to more than 56 groups dealing with education, training, health, safety and community and youth issues.
and coaches on mastering the throwing techniques of the javelin, which included run-up drills and the correct grip. Both athletes were great communicators and encouraged the children in their efforts. They told stories, answered all sorts of questions and had their medals on hand as they posed for photographs with the young athletes. Kim and Ben’s relaxed yet professional approach was much appreciated by the Karratha Little Athletics club, which would love to be able to host them again, particularly during the local competition season.

A memorial board for James Kelly from the 2010 carnival.
Carnival calls for basketballers By Ben Leahy Following on from the success of the JK Basketball Carnival in Port Hedland in April, tournament organiser Christine Black is urging teams to sign up and book their travel and accommodation early for next year’s carnival.
Held in memory of popular north-west sportsman James Kelly, the Easter tournament in Karratha will be the 10th time the competition has been held, and each year, it seems to get bigger and bigger. This year, more than 1000 spectators and 38 teams from
Beagle Bay, Bidyadanga, Broome, Meekatharra, Onslow, Paraburdoo, Perth, Port Hedland, Roebourne, Tom Price and Wickham took part.
“I think this year was the biggest carnival [held] in Hedland in years – I don’t know when was the last time Hedland had a big carnival like this,” Christine said.
Christine, who is James Kelly’s sister, said everyone she had spoken to had enjoyed the 2013 tournament.
She expects next year’s to be even bigger, saying “2014 will be 10 years for this carnival … and it will be a special event.”
The tournament is designed to be a fun way to help keep young people off the streets and encourage them to be active. The 2014 JK Basketball Carnival will be held in Karratha from April 19. For details call Christine Black on 0457 244 027.

The build-up to the wet season is upon us. For fishers, this means the barramundi action is also starting to heat up. As water temperatures start to rise, barramundi become more active, feeding voraciously and beginning to migrate from freshwater rivers to coastal estuaries to spawn. With this in mind, the Department of Fisheries would like to remind fishers of the rules when fishing for this iconic species. Barramundi have a slot size limit, which means they have both a minimum legal size and a maximum legal size. In order to keep a barra, it must be between 550mm and 800mm long. Fish less than 550mm and greater than 800mm must be returned to the water immediately. Department of Fisheries North Region community education officer Dylan Pross said the introduction of a
Mitchell Owens shows how to release a barramundi. statewide legal maximum size for barramundi was designed to protect the big breeders. “Generally, fish over 800mm are female and can produce up to 32 million eggs during the spawning season,” Dylan said. “[Barramundi] have an individual daily bag limit of two and fishers are reminded that there is also a possession limit of two for barramundi. “This means you may only have two barramundi in your possession at any time,
including in your temporary or permanent place of residence.” It is also important to note that fish with a maximum size, such as barramundi, must be carried and landed whole. “Effectively, this means that fishers should only fillet barramundi once back on land,” Dylan said. He also said it was important to handle fish correctly so they can be successfully released. “Rather than just picking the fish up by the mouth, fish should be supported along the length of the body using a wet hand or a wet rag,” he said. Fishers can get up to speed with the recreational fishing rules by getting hold of a copy of the Recreational Fishing Guide 2013. Copies are available from local Department of Fisheries offices, participating retail outlets and fish.wa.gov.au. Any fishers who spot illegal fishing activity are encouraged to report it to the Fishwatch hotline on 1800 815 507.

Ride into the good country each week By Jason Attard If you are looking for a new sport to take up, then check out the Good Country Roadies, who are keen to have more newcomers get involved in road cycling. Taking their name from the Aboriginal translation for Karratha, which means Good Country, the group is made up of male and female cyclists from Karratha and Dampier who get together each Saturday morning for a bunch ride. The Saturday rides are divided into two categories to cater for all ages, genders and fitness levels. Both groups depart from the Karratha Hospital car park at 6am and head out on a loop along Millstream Access Rd. The first group sets a more relaxed pace and has been called the 50/30 bunch because its rides a distance of 50km and does not exceed 30km/h. This may seem daunting for a beginner, but the idea is that the bunch sticks together and helps each other out. It’s amazing how much the teamwork helps – before you know it 50km will seem like a short ride. The second group is where the more experienced riders test themselves. Their rides are generally 70km in distance and have 20-30 riders working together. There are no speed limits, although the group looks out for one another to keep the rides fun. The group has also managed to include two sprint points. The first is at the 35km turnaround point and the second just before they reach the highway on the return trip – and both are always hotly contested. The first Saturday of each month is reserved for a longer ride of 100km, along the same route, just to mix it up a little. At the end of each ride it’s back to Jamaica Blue for a coffee, where problems are solved and stories told.
The club also has two training rides each week, departing from Baynton West roundabout on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5.30am. These rides vary in length from 40km to 70km, the idea being to get a ride in but still make it to work on time. Good Country Roadies members are always in training for one thing or another and regularly travel to worldclass events, such as the Tour Down Under, the 1000km Tour De Freedom and a stage of the Cape to Cape mountain bike race. Some have been lucky enough to travel overseas to ride tours in Europe and even watch the Tour De France. Cycling has for a number of years now been thought of as the new golf, with its growing participation and camaraderie. Good Country Roadies range from 15 year olds old to ladies and gentlemen approaching their 60s – so even the “more experienced” among us can still climb on a bike and enjoy the fun. Sharing the road is important, so at
the beginning of each ride they hold a riders’ briefing to talk about safety and the behaviour of everyone when they are out on the road. The group understands that they have many professional road users trying to do their job in the Pilbara and cyclists can sometimes bring frustration. The Good Country Roadies appreciate the patience of fellow road users and the space they allow cyclists. Safety is the group’s priority and it is prepared to work with industry groups to understand any issues and find the safest outcome. Meanwhile, anybody who has a road bike and is keen to join the group should just turn up at the Karratha Hospital carpark at 6am any Saturday. For more information call Jason on 0409 933 290 or Kim on 0403 322 878, or look up the Good Country Roadies Facebook page. Good Country Roadies is not affiliated with any national body and participants ride at their own risk.

Baked and Raised in the Pilbara Mountain bikers seek strong new committee into 2014, the club is looking to elect another strong committee at the AGM. The Burrup Mountain Bike Club holds its annual general meeting on Saturday, November 16, as it looks to capitalise on its most successful season yet. On average, more than 50 mountain bikers took to the start line each round this season, with the club’s blue-riband endurance event attracting 86 competitors, including some from Perth. With the visiting Perth riders praising the organisation of the six-hour race, there are hopes the event will grow into a drawcard for bikers from across the state. The club committee also ran a successful weekend of mountain bike skills clinics in July and secured more sponsorship and grants to grow the club. To keep that momentum going

Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report By Jenni Gates
The blue marlin action has continued to dominate the fishing off Exmouth this week with amazing fish being raised.
excess of 10 marlin a day, consisting mainly of blues, with a few striped marlin thrown in for good measure.
The size of most of the blues has ranged from 120-200kg. Anglers have come from far and wide to take advantage of this hot run of blue marlin. Over the past seven days, it hasn’t been uncommon to raise in
With boats and anglers targeting blue marlin in deeper water further offshore, there have been fewer black marlin raised than we usually see. Having said that, the boats fishing the
inshore grounds have encountered many small blacks, as well as sailfish. The gulf has continued to fire, with large pods of sailfish feeding on bait balls and wreaking havoc on trolled teasers and baits. Local angler Vicky Nelson landed her first sail on Sunday aboard her new boat,
within a short time of casting off on the maiden voyage. Vicky’s son Alex caught his first sailfish last month, for which he won Tackle World’s monthly fishing competition, landing him $50 to spend in store. There were some other great entrants in the competition this month, including Josh Poshy, who caught his first queenfish on fly, and Joe Linder, who speared a good coral trout. Other species entered included red emperor, blue line emperor, black marlin and whiting. All entrants go in to the draw to win $1000 worth of Shimano fishing gear for Christmas. So if you haven’t entered this year, drop in to Tackle World Exmouth with a photo and story. The shore-based fishing has been average this week, although the queenfish have been bigger than usual in the haunts of Old Bundegi and the tip of the cape. Night anglers casting big poppers from the tip of the cape have encountered some bruiser giant trevally just on dusk, while a few barracuda have also been sighted. The Exmouth Game Fishing Club will be holding its annual free-diving spearfishing competition from November 29 to December 1. The event aims to promote the benefits and understanding of this healthy, selective style of fishing. Competitors must dive in pairs for safety and certain species – not including coral trout or cod – are the target. The competition has been running for four years and many anglers come from all over the Pilbara to enjoy the two-day event. For further information, go to the Exmouth Game Fishing Club’s website or drop in to the Tackle World Exmouth store.
