Flying Foam Massacre victims remembered By Ben Leahy Members of the Pilbara’s Yaburara indigenous group are hoping to hold a ceremony next month to commemorate the massacre of up to 150 of their people on the Burrup Peninsula in 1868. The Flying Foam Massacre is thought to be one of the largest in Australia’s history, with groups of colonial settlers and pearlers hunting down Aboriginal men, women and children. Last year, the massacre was publicly commemorated for the first time as about 40 local elders, politicians and community members gathered on the Burrup for a small ceremony. Wong-goo-tt-oo elder Wilfred Hicks said a push was now on to get enough support to hold another ceremony this year, which is tentatively planned for February 23. “It is good to hold the Flying Foam Massacre ceremony again because it is promoting the history (of the region) – it is important because a lot of our people were killed there,” Mr Hicks said. “We plan to try and hold it annually from here on and last year’s (ceremony) was a great start because at least people now know about it and it is getting advertised.” The 1868 massacre has had a

the massacres are believed to have taken place alongside the waters of King Bay in land now neighboured by Dampier Port and the Karratha gas plants. The area is also home to one
of the highest concentrations of rock art in the world, with some estimating that there are up to a million rock art engravings in the Burrup Peninsula and Dampier archipelago.
Mr Hicks wants to see the Burrup World Heritage-listed to protect its rock art and believes that the loss of the Yaburara people, who lived in that area, has hampered efforts to protect the region in the past. “The Yaburara have lost a lot of that knowledge because there are not too many older Yaburara people around to show [the next generation],” he said. “The only one left is myself that knows more about the Burrup.” While 44 per cent of the land on the Burrup Peninsula was last year converted into a national park, not all land containing rock art is protected from development. One development proposal last year sought to turn the land containing the two plaques commemorating the massacre into a quarry. But for now Mr Hicks would like to see more people show their support by coming come along to this year’s commemorative ceremony. He said more details would be released in the coming weeks and he sees it as a chance to bring local indigenous language groups, government bodies like the Shire of Roebourne and ordinary community members together. “It would be great to have everybody involved.”

Training program offers a helping hand Tamara Binamat A training program that aims to guide Aboriginal community members from unemployment into professional careers is having more than just an effect on the participants, its impact reaches the entire community. The WY Program, run by the Ngarluma Yindjibarndi Foundation in Roebourne, engages young people from the community and mentors them in a chosen profession. The participants choose an industry that interests them and a host employer works with the WY Program to offer them a traineeship. The traineeships are hugely successful, often leading to full-time employment and a qualification. The program is funded through the North West Shelf Venture, with the support of NYFL and other Aboriginal organisations, meaning host employers are unburdened with extra wages. Zoe Shaw and Rikki Hicks, both 19, are in the current intake, and their futures already look promising with Zoe gaining full-time employment as a receptionist and Rikki on her way to securing a Certificate III in Childcare. Zoe began her traineeship as a receptionist at NYFL and after
only four months was offered a full-time role at the organisation. And in less than one year she has been promoted. Rikki was unemployed and spending her days at home in Roebourne before she started the WY Program. Now she is employed at an early learning centre in Wickham while completing her childcare qualification. Rikki said without the program, she would still be at home with nothing to do. “It gives people a good opportunity to learn about things they didn’t know about, like what types of jobs there are,” Rikki said. “And we learn a lot about responsibility.” The trainees have also been learning about money management and how to balance work and home life. ”We’ve been learning about how to budget and save money,” Rikki said. “I’ve never been able to save before.” Zoe believes unemployment would be a lot higher in Roebourne without the WY Program. “I don’t think I would have had access to these opportunities without the program because I didn’t have much experience in the workplace,” she said. “I don’t think many young people would have employment

Photo by Tamara Binamat. without WY because it’s hard to get a job if you didn’t go to school. “Most jobs around here are on the mines but not everybody wants to work on the mines.” The program has 10 participants who will be mentored for two years. Rosie Olszewski is a counsellor for the WY Program and says the program supports young Aboriginal people who face challenges at work before they even leave their front door. “A lot of these kids have difficult situations in their life they have to deal with so there’s
a lot of things they have to overcome to get to work, to even get clothes on their back,” she said. “Family affects work life; we all know that, however in this situation the difference is quite profound. “Against all odds these girls are making progress.” And Zoe agrees. “A lot of (Aboriginal) people are frightened to talk to white people,” she said. “They don’t know how to communicate because sometimes they don’t understand what we say because we’re so used to
talking in our own way with our people. “Since WY started I feel more independent.” The WY program not only supports youth, but it also educates employers about the extra struggles Aboriginal people face. “It’s a learning curve not just for trainees but for host employers too,” said Georgia Mills, who runs the program for NYFL. “They might not necessarily have worked with Aboriginal people before or didn’t understand culture, or didn’t understand lore time.” And the success of the trainees has a flow-on effect in the community too. Since beginning her career, Zoe’s partner and mother were inspired to get a job as well. “Because of girls like Rikki and Zoe of lot more girls are coming to us and saying if these two can do it, we want to too,” Georgia said. “It sends a message to the community that no matter where you come from and no matter what you’ve been through you can still achieve in life,” Zoe said. The next intake for the WY Program is in June. For more information contact Georgia Mills at Ngarluma Yindjibarndi Foundation on 9182 1750.

Community says thanks to crews as Christine clean-up continues

Nearly four weeks on from severe tropical cyclone Christine ripping through the Pilbara Coast, the clean-up continues. The small towns of Wickham and Roebourne were hit hardest as the eye of the cyclone, with winds up to 200km/h, tore over the top of them on the night of December 30. Volunteer emergency crews worked from the day before the cyclone hitting and for days afterward during recovery efforts. Around two dozen SES members from Karratha were activated during TC Christine, working a roster with about 12 local firefighters and other emergency personnel. And their hard work has been acknowledged, with the Shire of Roebourne putting on a thank you ceremony at the Karratha Leisureplex on Friday, January 17, and the Karratha Tavern hosting dinner and drinks that same evening for volunteers. Donna Walker, media liaison officer for the State Emergency Service in Karratha, said the recognition goes a long way. “It’s such a rarity to get this kind of support,” she said. “We’ve had it today from the shire and tonight from this local business, which is fantastic. “To get thanks from the people who we’ve helped out is great, it’s not often that we get that sort of feedback. “So if someone has had help from us and they appreciate it, a phone call to the unit or a message to one of our members goes a
long way to making the group feel worthwhile.” And it’s not just the people wearing the “jaffa suits” who are being commended, but the families and employers of the volunteers, too. The volunteers’ family homes were tended to well after the rest of the community was cleared up, and employers let their staff off to attend training or recovery work. “Certainly the support from employers this time around has been great,” Donna said. “We’ve had seven of the 24 mentioned who needed to have time off work to fulfil commitments out in the field and the bosses were more than willing to let them go. “Employers have the long-term view that letting staff off for training on a chainsaw course or rescue course (is) going to pay dividends down the track when the town has to deal with situations like this.” The SES is a volunteer organisation designed to help WA communities in the planning, prevention, response and recovery phases of emergencies and disasters. And like SES units everywhere, Karratha’s group always appreciates getting a bit of extra help from the community. “We are volunteers and thin on the ground, so all self-help initiated by the community was much appreciated,” Donna said. “We admire the spontaneous voluntary efforts of neighbours to help each other out.” To support the Karratha SES unit or for more information about becoming a volunteer, call 9144 1848 or head to karrathases.org.au.

Students train up with Rio By Ben Leahy It is not just fulltime careers with Rio Tinto that are in high demand – winning a place on the giant miner’s annual work experience program can be just as tough. This year, about 150 Shire of Roebourne school students applied for the program with just over half gaining the chance to

exercise) for the company, it also helps the environment.” Daniel also sees Rio Tinto as a potential employer once he graduates. “It is not just for the money, you also get good work experience from the program,” he said. “When there was a break in the work, I would be able to go visit other people as well. So I met engineers and people who do field work, which is good because I got to see how engineers do their work.” Fortunately for Daniel’s future prospects, his manager at Rio Tinto, Emma Green from the railway division’s document control, was so impressed by his work that she invited him back for a second two weeks of work experience this month. Karratha High Year 11 student Ben Mills was another to benefit from his two weeks working in Rio’s rolling stock maintenance workshop at Karratha’s 7 Mile site.
There he helped company employees repair the locomotives that pull huge iron ore loads. “I wanted to be an electrician before I did the vocation work, but now I have changed my mind and I want to be a fitter because I liked the fitting work at Rio,” Ben said. “You open the locomotive engines and change fuel pumps and maintain them – it is more hands-on and interesting than electrician work.” Ben and Daniel said the two weeks of work experience also helped them prepare for the demands of entering the professional workforce. To work on Rio Tinto sites, they had to ensure they had full protective clothing, pass drug and alcohol tests and complete several induction courses. Sarah Biggs from recruiting agency Skilled Group managed the selection and work experience program for Rio and encouraged students, who missed out in 2013 to apply again this year.

Red Dog Festival returns By Ben Leahy Residents and visitors to the Pilbara will again be able to bike, hike and swim their way through the region as the Red Dog Festival returns for its second year. Member for the Pilbara Brendon Grylls will head up a festival launch party on February 3 with the event itself to take place over the WA Day long weekend from May 30 to June 1. Inspired by the adventures of Red Dog as he wandered the Pilbara in the 1970s, the festival centrepiece will again be the Red Dog Relay, in which teams race through a 350km loop from Dampier to the Millstream Chichester National Park. The relay will require competitors to complete eight stages, including run, bus, 4WD, mountain bike, walk, swim, road bike and paddle legs. The community will also be able to take part in the festival welcome and closing parties, featuring live music and a return of the event’s dog show where the Pilbara’s best Red Dog lookalike will be crowned. Event director Peter McKay said he received positive feedback from last year’s festival, despite it nearly drowning under unseasonably heavy rain and winds. “It was the worst weather in 27 years in the Pilbara and all the locals have said to me that it’ll never happen again, so
W LE ! NO ILAB AN M A AV NEW IN
hopefully we won’t have that issue,” Mr McKay said. “There was an overwhelmingly positive response in 2013 … and this year we are seeking similar if not greater levels of support and participation from Pilbara residents.” Mr McKay said while the basic format of the festival remained the same, there were several refinements that would be announced on February 3. One difference is that Rio Tinto, the Shire of Roebourne and the state government’s Eventscorp have all come on board as sponsors. As a result, Mr McKay said one of the major changes this year is a new push to attract more people from outside the region to enter the relay. “We have a big focus on getting teams from Perth and the South-West areas to come up to Karratha for the event,” Mr McKay said. “It is about attracting people to the Pilbara to see parts of the Pilbara that they probably don’t even know about or haven’t seen before.” Mr McKay said due to the cost of flying to the Pilbara and finding accommodation, the event would especially appeal to corporate teams from across the state. Early bird registrations for the festival open on February 3. Visit reddogfestival. com.au.

interview Indigenous youths score chance to create televised docos Western Australian indigenous youths will have the opportunity to create a threeminute documentary on being a young Aboriginal in Australia for ABC2, thanks to a new initiative launched by the ABC and ScreenWest. Any indigenous youths aged between 18 and 35 who have an interest in film are eligible to apply for the funding and development opportunity by submitting a story concept around the theme One and Only. Then up to 10 aspiring filmmakers will be selected to develop their skills and stories. Of those projects seven stand-out, unique,
cutting-edge documentaries that surprise, enthuse, provoke and capture the essence of life as a contemporary Aboriginal youth in Western Australia will be completed. ScreenWest chief executive Ian Booth said the new initiative aims to unearth the next generation of indigenous filmmakers and bring their stories on to the screen. “This is a great opportunity to attract and develop the filmmaking skills of WA’s indigenous youth, following the success of the ABC and ScreenWest’s previous short-film development and production initiatives Deadly Yarns and the Seasons series.” ABC head of indigenous Sally Riley said the series was an opportunity for new filmmakers to surprise
audiences, and urged applicants to come along with strong concepts that challenge and provoke. “We’re really excited to be working with ScreenWest again on a series that will push the boundaries of documentary filmmaking. Basically no subject is off limits,” she said. Selected applicants, who do not need any previous experience in film but must be interested in pursuing a filmmaking career, will attend a five-day development workshop to hone the concept of their documentary and develop storytelling and filmmaking skills. After the development stage, ABC and ScreenWest will select seven documentaries to go into production, intended for broadcast on ABC2. Stories must be told in the first person, but can be about the filmmaker themselves, or another exceptional, unusual and inspiring young individual. The closing date for submitting story ideas is Monday, February 10, and applicants must be able to attend the development workshop in Perth the week of February 24-28 and be ready for production from March 31 to June 9. For more information on the initiative and application details check out screenwest. wa.gov.au.
MODERN APARTMENTS
Karratha’s Damian Long stars in festive farce Former Karratha resident Damian Long is giving the traditional December Christmas and Christmas in July the flick – he’s opted for Christmas in February instead.
He’s appearing in Season’s Greetings, Limelight Theatre’s first production of the year, a black and farcical comedy about a dysfunctional family Christmas. Written by Alan Ayckbourn and directed by Gordon Park, the play is set in 1980 over Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day in an average English suburban house. It features a high-stakes game of snakes and ladders, bungled infidelity beneath the Christmas tree, lots of drunken antics and bad cooking. Presiding over the festivities are two warring uncles – one is a kindly but incompetent doctor with a dreaded yearly puppet show while the other is a paranoid ex-security guard who loves all forms of violence. Long plays Clive, a divorced author who has found moderate success with his first novel. “He is brought along to the family Christmas by Rachel because he has been staying with her recently, as friends,” the former Karratha Senior High School student said. “But Clive finds himself a
little out of his depth over the course of this play, meeting, getting to know and betraying the family.” The role held two main challenges for Long. “Strangely, one of them is learning all the one to two-word lines,” he said. “So many of my lines are ‘hello’ or ‘no’ or similar. “And at the end of act two, I have a very full-on love scene – I’ve kissed on stage before but it’s never been something as intense as this.” First performing at school (and also appearing in a toy commercial), Long started with Geraldton’s Theatre 8 in 2011, performing in Deadwood Dick and Pajama Tops. Since moving to Perth, he has worked backstage at Playlovers on Nevermore and The Producers and as stage manager for the musical Curtains. “I met director Gordon Park at a showing of Limelight Theatre’s Lost in Yonkers, where I was asked to come along to a read-through of Season’s Greetings,” Long said. “On reading the script, what I found likeable about Clive was the combination of him being quaint, witty, bashful, angry and frigid – all at different parts of the play.” More information about Season’s Greetings can be found at limelighttheatre.com.

Barbecued butterflied lamb leg seasoned with parsley, capers and lemon

PILBARAEVENTSCALENDAR

Serves: 6 Preparation time: 8 minutes Cooking time: 50 minutes INGREDIENTS 1.5kg lamb leg, boned and butterflied 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley 2 tbsp chopped capers Grated rind and juice of one small lemon 1 tbsp olive oil Freshly ground pepper and salt Salad, to serve METHOD Preheat the barbecue to 200ºC ensuring the burners are set at medium. Combine the parsley, capers, rind, juice and oil and then rub over the lamb. Season with pepper and salt. Place the lamb in the centre of the barbecue, skin side up. Turn the burners directly under the lamb off. The remaining burners are left on to conduct and circulate the heat around the lamb. Close the lid and cook for 25 minutes per 500g for a medium result (see tips, below). Test to see if it’s done to your liking using tongs on the thickest part of the meat. Rare is soft when pressed, medium is springy and well done is very firm. Remove lamb, cover loosely with foil and rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing. Serve the lamb with salad. n As a general guide, cook meat at 200ºC for 20 mins per 500g for rare, 25 mins per 500g for medium. Cooking to no more than medium will keep all the meat juicy. n You’ll find a butterflied lamb leg has an uneven thickness, so the thinner parts will cook faster than the thicker parts, which naturally means some will be cooked a
little more, some a little less. A good thing if your guests like varying doneness. n Cooking a lamb roast in a covered barbecue is just a little different to the way you’d cook it in your oven. You use indirect cooking to roast the lamb, which simply means there is no heat directly under the meat as it cooks.

Trimming the fat earns Fiji getaway By Ben Leahy
The Hedland community has embraced first aid with St John Ambulance WA delivering training to almost every student in the district. St John North West regional manager Wil White said he was delighted that so many young people had taken part in the free training program. “This surge in interest in First Aid Focus, our schools-based first aid program, resulted in 1800 students being trained in Port and South Hedland schools,” he said. “The response we’ve had from these schools has been really positive – the teachers, students and parents have all been very supportive,” he said. Last year St John provided this training to more than 100,000 schoolchildren – the first time this number has ever been achieved. First Aid Focus provides students from Kindergarten to Year 12 with essential skills to respond to emergency situations such as dialling 000 and providing vital information or performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Mr White said First Aid Focus was part of the organisation’s mission to ensure at least one person in every Western Australian household was trained in first aid. “Our First Aid Focus delivers tailored first aid courses to students of all ages,” he said. “More than 300,000 students have received first aid training under the program since it began in 2009 and we are keen to see it rolled out to more schools across Western Australia.” For more information about the course visit stjohnambulance.com.au/ firstaidfocus.
Shane Beal lost a quarter of his bodyweight during the 12-week Tastelife challenge. Below, the Tastelife relay was one of many ways challenge participants got active.
Tom Price worker Shane Beal has won a holiday to Fiji after he lost a quarter of his bodyweight during a weight loss challenge involving more than 600 Pilbara workers. Mr Beal dropped 26.7kg in 12 weeks as part of a challenge involving employees of ESS Support Services Worldwide, a company operating mining accommodation camps for flyin, fly-out workers. Mr Beal said the excess kilos had been piling on since he started shift work a few years ago, but that the weight loss challenge had given him the inspiration to change his ways. “The 12 Week Tastelife Weight Loss Challenge gave me plenty of support and motivation to do something about it,” Mr Beal said. And he was not alone, as ESS employees across Western Australia and Queensland lost a combined 4.5 tonnes of weight this year. Catherine Walker, the national manager for Tastelife, ESS’s partner in the challenge, said 2013 had produced the best results yet. “(Last) year we had the most (ESS work sites) participate, the most people and the most weight lost ever,” Ms Walker said. “We’ve now lost a total [of] 17,000kg of weight over the past nine years and we’ve come a long way in helping fly-in-flyout workers to live healthier lives.” Ms Walker said the challenge was designed to educate and

motivate shift workers, who often struggle to maintain healthy lifestyles while working long hours and fly-in, fly-out rosters, such as two or four weeks on at a time. Among the support offered to challenge participants was the chance to consult with Activelife Coaches. The Activelife Coaches provided personal health assessments, eating plans and cooking and shopping tips to participants. They also ran healthy lifestyle seminars and on-site group fitness classes. Mr Beal said he managed to lose 26 per cent of his bodyweight because his on-site coach had kept him motivated, something he described as being “no easy task”. He also managed to drop the kilos by making important changes to his diet. Before undertaking the 12week challenge, Mr Beal said he was eating six to seven meals full of carbohydrates and proteins a day. However, during the challenge he not only reduced his overall intake of food but also ate portions made up of half a plate of vegetables or salad and a quarter each of protein and carbohydrates. Mr Beal also completed weights sessions in the gym four days a week plus additional cardio and group fitness workouts. His main concern now is set to be enjoying his time in Fiji while resisting the temptation to get stuck into platefuls of delicious holiday food and drinks.

Many people don’t realize that they have options to stay in Australia – often as a permanent resident.

Being a migrant myself, I understand the difficulties involved in moving to a new country. I have been living and working in WA as an Australian registered migration agent for over 10 years and have assisted several thousand people to obtain temporary and permanent residence visas. My commitment to you is that I will give you a clear assessment of your visa options and whether you have a good chance of success. If I don’t think your application will succeed I will tell you this up-front. My firm specializes in Permanent Residence visas such as Employer Nomination (186), Regional Sponsored Migration (187), General Skilled (189/190) as well as Temporary work (457) and Partner Visas. Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report By Jenni Gates
The green mud crab is the most common species in the Pilbara. Photo by the Department of Fisheries
Catching crabs By the Department of Fisheries This month we takes a closer look at mud crabs – an animal prized by recreational fishers for its impressive size and delicious taste. In WA mud crabs are found from Shark Bay in the south to the Northern Territory border. There are two different, albeit very similar looking, species of mud crab. Green mud crabs (Scylla serratta) can grow up to 300mm in shell width and 2.5kg. The brown mud crab (Scylla olivacea) can grow up to 150mm in shell width and 1.5kg. “Despite their names, they don’t actually look green and brown,” Fisheries and Marine officer Joanne Johnson said. “The names were originally used to reflect the types of environments they were thought to prefer”. “Due to quite different sizes at maturity, the legal minimum
size limit for each species is different. “For this reason fishers need to be able to tell them apart.” Green mud crabs have a minimum legal size of 150mm whereas brown mud crabs have minimum legal size of 120mm. There is a combined daily bag limit of five crabs. Crabs can be caught using a baited drop net or by hooking them out of their burrow. Although traps are available to purchase in many stores, using them is prohibited in WA waters. Fishers can get up to speed with the recreational fishing rules by reading the Recreational fishing guide 2014 before they go fishing. Copies are available from your local Department of Fisheries office, participating retail outlets or from fish.wa.gov.au. Anyone observing illegal fishing activity should report it to the Fishwatch hotline on 1800 815 507.

Emma Newton with her first blue marlin and her proud father Ross, Skipper of Reel Teaser. tournament this year, make sure it is Gamex, which is an event not to be missed. The gulf shoreline has had plenty of rays cruising the flats lately. As they mud-up the ocean floor, small creatures get stirred up and float in the surrounding water. This creates attention from predatory fish such as trevally, queenfish and snub-nosed dart, and one angler has been catching these fish using prawns this week. However, the snubbies are very flighty and finicky and challenging to catch. They are also a prized catch for fly-fishing anglers. These fish are not good eating and we recommend treating them carefully, using barbless hooks and minimising

their time out of the water so you can successfully release them. The west side has been a lot cooler than the gulf side lately and Sandy Bay has been a popular place for people walking the shoreline with a rod in hand and some lures. Small trevally, queenfish, cod, dart and spanglies can be caught along this shoreline, and we always recommend having a squid jig handy in your backpack in case one or two swim by. Your backpack can easily carry a small cooler bag with ice, and if you add a little salt water to it, you will be able to create a nice slurry to help keep the flesh of fish and squid in good condition for eating until you get home.

Oh my goodness, where is that wind coming from? It has been windier than I can ever remember lately, with gusts that can be well over 30 knots in the late evening. Luckily it has not been like this during the daytime and, thankfully, it is providing a cool relief after the super-hot temperatures we experienced in the past few weeks. Anglers in larger boats have been able to get out during this good weather and get among the bluewater action where billfish, big tuna and dolphin fish are all biting. Reel Teaser ventured down from Broome and hit some great fish hotspots off the Muiron Islands. In one day, they tagged five blue marlin out of nine fish raised, before tagging two blue and two black marlins the next day from among seven fish raised, with the largest fish estimated to be close to 280kg. They also got a great yellowfin tuna, which topped off their annual trip south nicely. Reel Teaser is here for two fishing events held back-to-back in March – the Australian International Billfish Tournament and the Gamex tournament. If you’re thinking of fishing in these events, we suggest you get your entries in early. There will be plenty of fun fishing, entertainment, celebrity chefs and fishermen and women, social activities and educational clinics. And if you can only take part in one fishing
Tricky winds didn’t deter 28 cyclists from turning out last Saturday for the Good Country Roadies weekly Saturday morning 70km ride. A strong pace was set all the way out the Karratha-Tom Price Rd before Wynand Jordaan, aka Big Vee, made an early breakaway as they approached the halfway sprint point. Big Vee’s efforts always impress, given that he rides a mountain bike with thick tyres, while the rest of the riders are on road bikes designed for far greater speed. Yet his early break was not enough to see him all the way to the sprint point, with Jason Geike coming from behind to steal the win. Turning for home, the group were again in good form despite the tricky headwind.
The windy weather also gave good reason to reflect on the safety of the group and highlighted how important it is that all riders work as a team and are mindful of each other.
“
Big Vee’s efforts always impress, given that he rides a mountain bike with thick tyres
”
Special mention should go to Campbell Haslam, who does a great job marshalling everyone in the right direction as ride leader. Cam also led out the peloton toward the final sprint finish of the day as he overran Jason Geike, who broke early. But in another performance reminiscent of the great
racehorse Makybe Diva, Kim Sparks popped out from behind Cam’s wheel to take home the bacon for the third week in a row. It was a great sprint finish with the GPS showing a speed of just over 60km/h. This week’s ride was also well attended by newcomers. A special welcome to Matt Innay, who looked resplendent on his Pinarello bike and wearing fluorescent lime shoes. Big Vee’s better half, Tina Jordaan was another new rider, joining the group who rode the shorter 50km route. Tina was on a bike with skinny tyres and rumour has it Big Vee might even be abandoning the fat tyres of his mountain bike for a friendlier road version. The ride finished on a high as a large number of riders made their way to the coffee shop for some more banter and fun.

Teeball players take to the diamond for grand finals Karratha and Dampier’s junior teeball players are enjoying a well-earned holiday break after wrapping up their season in December in a series of grand final matches played on Bulgarra Oval. Six Karratha and Dampier Teeball Association teams competing in three divisions took the field in a highly entertaining day of play. The Pirates claimed the first premiership of the day as they proved too strong for the Rockers in the junior division.
In the intermediate age level, the Strikers outpointed the Tigers, while it was the Pirates who again triumphed over the Rockers in the final game of the day, the seniors’ grand final. Teeball dad Camerin Coles said the day was highly enjoyable. “The games were played in fantastic spirits and all the kids left everything they had on the diamond,” he said. Following the grand finals, the kids gathered for hot dogs,
trophy presentations and a season wind-up for all 14 teams that took part in the season. The next junior teeball season begins in August, though the sport regularly features in Karratha Inclusive programs each school holidays. Everyone associated with Karratha teeball is encouraged to get along to the association’s annual general meeting on February 11, while youngsters looking for a new sport should stay tuned for the start of the baseball season in a few months.
Juniors hoping to make the big league By Bob Neville
“
The young players will be out and about ... over the next few weeks looking to raise funds to help them in their quest
”
Renowned Port Hedland softballer Rachel Leong will be attending her fourth and possibly last SEAYBST as an under-18s player and will be joined by Port Hedland Sisters Carleigh and Kiara Hall, Shakira Cabales, Jennifer Price and Nikita Whitby on the big trip. In April, Port Hedland Little Leaguers Ben Giddy, Jack Bowins and Bailey Warren will join the
WA under-12s side playing in South Africa and Hong Kong. The duo will be hoping to win a spot in the International Little League World Series, which will be played in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, birthplace of the game in 1939, later in the year. Joining them will be a regional under-15s side from Port Hedland and players from across the Pilbara. Also vying for a spot in the big event in Pennsylvania will be fellow local lads Ethan Smith, Anthony Grace and Jack Babie. The young players will be out and about around Port Hedland over the next few weeks looking to raise funds to help them in their quest at both the baseball and softball tournaments. BHP Billiton Iron Ore has already pitched in with funds for new equipment to enable the guys and girls to train. The Baseball and Softball Associations would be very happy to talk with other potential partners and sponsors for these great events. The local league starts back on Saturday, February 1 when the Pirates host league-leaders the Swans at 4.30pm. The Sharks then host the Brewers under lights at 7.30pm.

Port Hedland baseball and softball will be well represented around the world this year as 19 young players jet off to the USA, South Africa, Hong Kong and Manila. Local junior baseball association co-ordinator Shelley Glasson has ensured the youngsters have had the opportunity to train and play in Hedland each Friday evening, with the result being a wealth of talent produced by hard work. Blade Hayter and David John will head out of Perth in June and play five weeks of baseball with the Perth Heat Colts in LA, Sacramento, Eureka, Portland, Boise, Arizona and Las Vegas. But before that, David John will join Brendan Bush, Josh Taylor, Ryan Leong, brother Lucas John and Jack Bowins as part of the WA team to travel to Manila to compete in the South East Asian Youth Baseball and Softball Tournament (SEAYBST). Youth baseball leagues from Jakarta, Singapore, Perth, Bangkok, and Manila are perennial attendees and founding members of the tournament, which brings together more than 400 players, coaches and officials.
The players range in age from 11 to 18, and comprise about 20 teams across five age and gender based divisions. Six young ladies from the Port Hedland Softball Association will travel with the baseballers to Manila and compete in the tough softball competition.

Boxing bootcamp helps keep kids on their toes Shire of Roebourne kids got a kick out of trying a new sport this month as they took part in a free Boxing Bootcamp at the Wickham Youth Group centre. Run as part of the Shire’s school holiday program, the class taught the kids the art of amateur boxing in a fun and friendly environment. Claire and Mick Hale from Wickham’s Peak 1 boxing club ran the students, aged between six and 12, through safety precautions and basic boxing skills before finishing off with fun exercises and team games. The kids also got to meet and chat with Peak 1’s local amateur youth boxer Daniel Stuart, who’s achievements at just 16 years of age helped inspire many of the children to promise to continue to pursue active sports.
Netball calendar is jam-packed After an exciting 2013 featuring high-level competition, a visit by netball professional Caitlin Bassett and even a trip by a Karratha team to the Australian Masters Games in Geelong, netball is backand bigger than ever. The season proper does not start until April 28, when the first seniors and juniors games begin, but there is plenty to keep netballers busy until then. First up is the resumption of the mixed netball competition on February 3 after a break for the Christmas holidays. But all participants should note there is a $62 fee to take part in the mixed competition
Shire of Roebourne
for the 2014 calendar year. This fee also covers the costs for any players who then play the ladies’ winter competition later in the year. The next date on the calendar to look out for is a grading session on February 18. The grading session allows new and existing players to try out for teams in higher divisions. But don’t panic if you haven’t touched a netball all summer, the tryouts are conducted in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The Karratha Netball Association’s annual general meeting is also set to be held on March 18. It is important for
teams to prepare for this as two representatives from each junior and senior side must attend the meeting – if you do not, you may miss out on being placed on the fixtures for the season. One of the most exciting developments this year is the launch of junior competition for those aged 10 and under, which kicks off on April 29. Another don’tmiss event to mark on the calendar is the North West Netball Championships, which Karratha will host on June 14 and 15. So with plenty of netball on for players of all ages and abilities, be sure to get down to the Karratha Leisureplex and get involved.
