I started to see how stunning it is. Now every time I see lightning, I head straight towards it (in a safe manner, of course) to capture what mother-nature has to offer. “I’ve heard a lot of people say they’re afraid of lightning. “ Well, so am I – I would be have to be stupid not to be. Indigenous language gets $55,000 for digital records By Ben Leahy The Wangka Maya Pilbara Aboriginal Language Centre has been awarded $55,000 to help create digital records of one Pilbara language as part of a $2.6 million national funding pool by the Federal Government. The funding is designed to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples keep their languages alive and is part of the Indigenous Languages Support program established in 1991. Previous funding has been used by groups in Northern WA to create projects, such as smartphone dictionaries and phrase book apps as well as animations and increased digital resources at libraries and schools. The cash injection will bring the total investment of government funding for indigenous languages to more than $13 million in 2013-14. The government funding comes as another project by the Film and Television Institute WA has included recordings of the Pilbara’s Banyjima language among archives that are planned to become the world’s largest and most comprehensive anthology of indigenous stories.
Pilbara Manyjilyjarra language specialist May Chapman (left) with Jessica Mathie from Wanka Maya Aboriginal Language Centre Along with Banyjima, the Nyiyaparli and Miriwoong langauges – which are each spoken by less than 40 people – will be among the next 15 collections of recordings to be preserved in the program called Indigenous Community Stories. A joint initiative of ScreenWest, Rio Tinto, Leighton and FTI, ICS has already captured 49 story collections, and will store the recordings for 100 years at state and national storage facilities. Content collected so far includes historically
significant oral histories of elders and families, dreaming stories, customs, dances, art, language, law and other cultural practices. Other stories scheduled for production and preservation include important historical accounts of indigenous elders and the lengths to which their people went to keep their culture alive under the oppressive government policies of the time. More modern collections include the life stories of renowned artists Gina Williams and Lois Olney as well as a look at how
indigenous youths have embraced hip-hop as a means of expressing their own culture. ICS production coordinator Devina McPherson said the Indigenous Community Stories initiative was unique in its ability to maintain the integrity of Aboriginal oral traditions. “One of the key factors in plans to preserve the culture is the fact that much of the information has been passed down through countless generations as stories, songs, art and dance,” Ms McPherson said. “High-definition digital technology enables us to preserve these stories as they were intended – that is, as an unabridged oral history, as told by elders, on their land, in their own way.” David Joyce, Rio Tinto’s managing director – projects and development, said the miner supported the ICS program. “We are particularly pleased to see Pilbara, Kimberley and Gascoyne stories featuring in the latest round of collections being recorded in 2014, including those by groups which our businesses continue to develop direct and positive relationships with in these regions,” he said.

www.pilbaraecho.com.au Hopes held for childcare changes Edition 280 after review
echo
A Federal Government inquiry into Australian childcare has received 1000 submissions, including calls by Family Day Care Australia for increased funding to help create better access in remote areas, such as the Pilbara. The Productivity Commission’s Inquiry into childcare and early childhood learning is the largest review of the entire childcare sector since the 1990s. With many families in the Pilbara still battling to meet high childcare and day care costs, national body Family Day Care Australia said in its submission to the inquiry that regional areas needed more support. More than 61 per cent of all family day care services operate in regional, rural or remote areas and in many of these areas, family day care is the only type of formal early childhood education and care service available. “Rural and remote areas services have additional operating expenses, encounter greater difficulty in accessing training and professional development, recruiting and retaining staff, and face barriers regarding the administration of support to educator networks,” the Family Day Care submission said. “Elevating both the economic and social value of the early
childhood education and care sector, which starts with increased public investment, should be a priority for the Australian Government.” Family Day Care is a growing segment in the childcare industry with Federal Government figures released last week revealing the total number of children attending family day care has increased by 20 per cent in the past year. Assistant Education Minister Ley said the government realised that child and day care were important issues to working families in areas, such as the Pilbara. “Childcare is no longer just about delivering a quality service – it plays a role in everything from the impact on family budgets through to the prosperity of our economy and nation,” Ms Ley said. “I was particularly pleased to see a large number of submissions (to the inquiry) were from parents, educators and operators dealing with these issues at the coalface every day. “This also shows Australians believe there are significant issues around flexibility, affordability, accessibility and workforce participation after Labor’s six years in power.” Pilbara residents can read submissions to the Productivity Commission at www.pc.gov.au/ projects/inquiry/childcare. The commission’s report is due in October.

Government wants kids back in school By Ben Leahy A Federal Government program to tackle low attendance rates in Pilbara schools kicked off last week with Minister for Indigenous Affairs Nigel Scullion visiting Roebourne District High School on February 5. Students at Roebourne DHS have been attending school on average 53 per cent of the time between 2008-2012, while average attendance rates at Onslow Primary School are at 76 per cent over the same period. The two schools are among 40 remote communities in Australia in which the Federal Government is aiming to spend $28.4 million over two years to get kids back in school. “If we don’t educate kids in remote communities, all the policies and plans in the world designed to build a future for Indigenous people in remote Australia will amount to nothing,” Mr Scullion said. “Education is the fundamental building block to establishing strong, sustainable communities.” The funding will go toward employing 21 school attendance officers in Roebourne and Onslow. The attendance officers will be recruited primarily from local jobseekers in the communities and will help get children to school in a variety of ways, such as by giving them a lift in the mornings, chatting with
Roebourne District High School students during the school’s community service day. children’s parents or organising programs, like a breakfast club. “This community-based school attendance model for these remote communities is aimed at breaking the cycle of nonattendance and ensuring that parents and carers take on the responsibility for the education of their children,” Mr Scullion said. “Attendance officers and

supervisors will have working with children cards and will personally visit houses where students have not attended to get them to school, not just once, but each and every school day. “As well as working in the morning to get kids to school, some attendance officers will work after school to engage with children and families in
after school activities to build a commitment to, and pattern of attendance.” Mr Scullion said the measures were necessary after little improvement had been shown in the education of indigenous children in recent times. “A child attending school 70 per cent of the time is not receiving a proper education,” Mr Scullion said.
“A recent Council of Australian Government report on education showed there had been no improvement in attendance of Indigenous students over the past five years and in some areas it is going backwards. “It is horrific to think that in the Northern Territory, only 13 per cent of kids are attending school 80 per cent of the time. This has to change.”

Dampier residents had their say about the future of the town at a community meeting last November.
Draft plan for Dampier community By Ben Leahy Dampier community members have put together a new plan designed to enhance the town’s foreshore and bring more services and community activities into town. The Dampier Community Association recently finished the draft plan, which is based on feedback from a series of consultation activities in 2013, including a successful community meeting last November. The DCA will now put the Dampier Community Plan 2014-2019 to members for a vote at its annual general meeting on Tuesday February 18. The draft plan seeks to find ways to help Dampier retain its relaxed lifestyle, while also attracting and retaining more essential services and shops.
The town’s population has been dropping in recent years and services, such as an Australia Post office, GP clinic and pharmacy, have shut down. Other goals in the community plan include making the Dampier foreshore more attractive and increasing tourism in the town. The community plan is designed to give residents a chance to have their say in Dampier’s future ahead of the state government’s plans to spend big money revitalising the town. Once the community plan has been endorsed, the DCA will next draft an operational plan that will guide the actions of the association and inform the way it will spend the $200,000 in funding it will receive from the Shire of Roebourne.

A new street numbering system to standardise property address details across the Shire of Roebourne will come into effect next month. Changes will be rolled out in stages in Bulgarra, Dampier and parts of Point Samson as well as the Karratha and Gap Ridge Industrial Estates, which currently use the old lot numbering system. Properties in Baynton, Baynton West, Nickol, Nickol West, Millars Well and Pegs Creek, Roebourne and Wickham will not be affected. Shire of Roebourne chief executive officer Chris Adams said the new system would make it easier for residents and businesses to find properties. “The old lot numbering system has become out of sequence and at times confusing and hard to follow for both visitors and service providers,” he said. “The new system will make it easier for emergency and utility service providers to identify properties quickly and will mean all properties across the Shire are following a standard system. “The Shire will be updating details with a number of utility and emergency service providers and sending out information to property owners and occupiers to confirm their new details. “However, residents will need to

Affordable housing for service workers in Newman is about to get a boost with the construction of 10 twobedroom affordable rental dwellings on Homestead Ramble now under way. Western Australian developer and builder, Megara Constructions, was awarded the $4.18 million tender for the East Newman residential estate, funded as part of the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program. Housing Minister Bill Marmion said the new dwellings would provide more affordable accommodation options for service workers and help to alleviate some of the pressures experienced in the town as a result of the critical housing shortage and high rents. “The Department of Housing is aware of the strong demand for more affordable housing in Newman … and these new dwellings will provide some rental reprieve for key service workers in the town,” Mr Marmion said. Service workers are employees of small and medium businesses across a range of industries including retail, tourism, health and hospitality. The 10 new two-bedroom dwellings will be offered at a discount of around 40 per cent on market rent. Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the initiative was important

Pilbara residents wanting to explore the World Heritagelisted Ningaloo Reef and Shark Bay waters to our south now have a guidebook based on local knowledge and science to take with them. Biologist and adjunct senior lecturer at James Cook University Len Zell and Exmouth resident Susie Bedford coauthored the recently released Ningaloo Reef – Shark Bay & Outback Pathways Guidebook. It takes readers from Exmouth’s Ningaloo Reef to Shark Bay and then inland through the Gascoyne and Murchison regions to places like Cue and Mount Magnet. But what is different according to author Len Zell is the depth of entertaining knowledge the book contains. It builds a picture from the ground up of each region by explaining its geology and climate and how this has supported the habitats and human history in each region. “I call them guidebooks of distinction because they fill that enormous gap between the Lonely Planet type guides and the scientific (and academic) guides to the area,” Mr Zell said. “One of the best bits of feedback I had was that, `It was just like having an expert in the car beside us and the kids got so much more out of the trip
numerous television programs with the ABC, Channel Nine and Seven and on a Great Barrier Reef special for the BBC. Mr Zell said he hopes the Ningaloo book helps more people get out and explore the North West. “More than three hundred thousand tourists visit this region each year,” he writes in the book. “Only a small fraction of them get to see any more than a superficial view of the area or to experience the outback regions.” He said a highlight of the region was the health of the Ningaloo Reef system. “One of the things about Ningaloo is it has had fairly minimal human impact from coastal runoff and agriculture, although the fishing impact has been significant,” Mr Zell said. “But as a coral reef system, it is in pretty good shape, whereas the Great Barrier Reef has lost anything up to 60 per cent of its diversity and 50 per cent of its live coral cover. “So we have failed totally on the Great Barrier Reef as far as the World Heritage listing is concerned because the reef has degraded and continues to degrade since the listing. “Whereas somewhere like Ningaloo, my perspective would be that we have enacted our responsibility as a World Heritage area and looked after Ningaloo pretty well.”

Study to look at North West marine life By Ben Leahy The marine ecosystem of Western Australia’s Pilbara region will be surveyed in an unprecedented study that will help future conservation planning. The health and wellbeing check up will take place along a 300km stretch of WA coast that includes the World Heritagelisted Ningaloo Marine Park, the Barrow and Montebello island conservation areas and the Dampier Archipelago. The Pilbara Marine Conservation Partnership study will also include areas that are currently being developed as ports and sites for oil and gas extraction and processing. Scientist Dr Russ Babcock will head up the five-year, $12 million partnership between the CSIRO and University of Western Australia. “Our research will help government and industry balance the environmental sustainability of the Pilbara with its increasing broad sector use,” CSIRO lead scientist Dr Babcock said. “Over the next five years we want to find out everything we can about the health and makeup of the region, as well as observe and evaluate any localised changes, so we can give the best possible advice to future use managers on how they can act sustainably.” Dr Babcock and his team have recently returned from their first exploratory tour of the region, where they were scouting survey sites. Some unwelcome discoveries were made, including the bleaching and decimation of a pocket of ancient coral heads – many up to 400 years old – that have provided an important record of reef health. “We suspect this bleaching event was due to marine

variations and finding out why they happen, we can improve our overall understanding of the marine environment in the region, and how we can best preserve it.” The University of Western Australia’s Professor Shaun Collin said the study would help establish an understanding of how many fish and coral
NOTICE TO CUSTOMERS OF
I Love My Water Pty Ltd and Home Essentials Australia Pty Ltd PUBLIC NOTICE The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has accepted an enforceable undertaking (EU) from Home Essentials Australia Pty Ltd, I Love My Water Pty Ltd, Triple Bay Group Pty Ltd and Triple Bay Pty Ltd (Companies).
The EU was entered into after an ASIC investigation found that by entering into ‘rent to own’ agreements with consumers for the hire/purchase of either water cooler units or first aid kits, the Companies engaged in credit activities while not licensed to do so, in breach of the National Consumer Credit Protection Act 2009 (Cth). ASIC also found that “Ongoing Rental Advantage” and “Extended Rental Term” clauses in the agreements were unfair contract terms.
K 10
Under the EU, the Companies have agreed: a)
not to collect any further payments from customers under existing rent to own agreements;
b)
to give to all customers unfettered title in the goods hired under rent to own agreements;
c)
not to enforce any rent to own agreements, including enforcement of any “Ongoing Rental Advantage” or “Extended Rental Term” clauses;
d)
to honour all contractual and statutory warranties to which customers are entitled;
e)
not to enter into any further rent to own agreements with consumers.

communities lived in Pilbara waters. “This study will develop a greater understanding of the dynamics of coral and fish communities in the region, which in turn will provide us with the ecological indicators of potential human impacts,” Professor Collin said. “With it, we can provide a research baseline for decision
making in the region that will strike the right balance between environmental conservation and industry development.” The study is funded by the Gorgon Project’s Net Conservation Benefit Fund, which is administered by the Western Australia Department of Parks and Wildlife.
New drilling rigs to help drive shale gas industry By Jeff Haworth With Western Australia’s natural gas reserves from shale and tight rock still in the early stages of exploration and evaluation, the Department of Mines and Petroleum believes there are big opportunities to grow the industry. World-wide, the process of hydraulic fracturing has been used in more than one million shale gas wells. But here in WA, only seven shale or tight gas exploration wells have undergone hydraulic fracturing in the past ten years. WA has the chance to kick start its industry by harnessing recent improvements in technology and government regulations developed in other countries. These advancements, developed over more than two decades of shale gas production, include the introduction of more sophisticated onshore drilling equipment, which improves environmental outcomes. A WA company recently imported a Crusader 405 drilling rig – the first of its kind in the state. The rig has a smaller surface footprint than traditional rigs, resulting in less surface disturbance. It also has the ability to drill
horizontally, allowing multiple wells to be drilled from one location. Sump pits, typically used to store waste drilling fluids and rock cuttings, may not be required with this rig as it is compatible with a closed-loop drilling system which minimises waste. Other benefits of the rig include a quieter system and easier transport as all components can be containerised, resulting in less traffic disturbance. The drill rig, which can be used for conventional, shale and tight gas and oil development, was recently used in the state’s South West. It is now in the Kimberley region. If shale and tight gas exploration increases in WA, drilling rigs such as the Crusader 405 will go a long way to helping oil and gas operators develop the state’s onshore resources, while minimising potential impacts to the environment. For more information on WA’s emerging shale and tight gas industry, visit www.dmp.wa.gov. au/shaleandtightgas or phone 9222 0442. Jeff Haworth is petroleum executive director at the Department of Mines and Petroleum.

“RELAX BY THE POOL”
By Ben Leahy Pilbara movie buffs looking to catch some of the world’s best short films need to plan their flights now to catch Flickerfest as it comes to Perth on March 6-9 and Broome on March 7-8. However, for those willing to wait a little longer, the festival will also screen in Exmouth on May 2-3. More than 2300 short film entries were submitted to Flickerfest this year with 120 of those selected to be part of the official competition. Successful entries can even go on to be part of the Academy Awards short film categories. Aussie film Vote Yes is one of the festival highlights this year.
Set in May 1967, it stars Miranda Tapsell from The Sapphires and explores the relationship of two women around the period of Australia’s referendum on Aboriginal rights. Another highlight is Tango Underpants about a young Australian backpacker who not only discovers the wonders of the Tango during a visit to Buenos Aires but also realises the importance of wearing the right underwear. Flickerfest also has a national partnership with ABC Open and will show short films by ABC Open reporters and their subjects before most festival screenings. Exmouth Flickerfest screenings are at the Novotel Ningaloo Resort on May 2-3 with concessions selling for $10 and full priced tickets for $15.
Terrorists target Karratha plants By Ben Leahy Karratha residents might not know it, but they are in imminent danger from a terror strike on the Burrup Peninsula’s gas plant facilities – at least, that is the scenario in a new book by West Australian journalist Bruce Cheesman. In Cheesman’s recently released black comedy-thriller called Noble Rot, ace reporter Simon West is hard at work foiling the plans of fictional terror group Al Fatwa as they target regional WA. Not only are Al Fatwa planning to assassinate the US president during an Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation summit in Margaret River, south of Perth, they also intend to launch a simultaneous strike in the North West. The group’s plan is to use a mini submarine to torpedo a LNG tanker in Dampier Harbour, setting off an explosion that would destroy the Burrup’s gas plants and kill residents as far away as Karratha. And if the mini sub misses its mark, Al Fatwa’s planned plane hijacking from nearby Karratha airport will finish the job. For Noble Rot author Bruce, the plot is not as far-fetched as it might sound, and he said Pilbara residents will enjoy reading about their local area as it is caught up in a world of international intrigue. “It is a good read – the response and reviews so far have been good and as a journalist for so long, I hope I can put a fairly interesting read together,” Bruce said. “(The book is interesting also)
because the global campaign on terror has become a part of everyone’s life. Certainly since the World Trade Centre bombings, in terms of security at airports and governments cracking down (on private liberties) … now you have security fears which you never had 10 or 15-years ago.” Bruce said he used his 25-years’ experience as a foreign correspondent in Asia and the Middle East, including time spent in an Iraqi jail during the First Gulf War, to add realism and excitement to the story. He blends that with smatterings of Western Australian history and local plotlines, mostly related to the Margaret River region. This leads fictional reporter Simon West to also come to grips with a mining and media baron, who plans to take over the local press and tear up Margaret River’s vineyards and replace them with a Gold Coast-style resort. Yet, it is Al Fatwa that is Simon West’s most immediate challenge and the novel begins with a leaked report by an Australian intelligence agency that outlines a number of scenarios that would result from an attack on an LNG carrier in Dampier port. These include, according to the report in the novel, a blast force from a single LNG tanker attack that is 55 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb and a huge firewall that could melt victims’ flesh within a 10km radius. The resultant death toll would be expected to be in excess of 20,000 people. Geepers, it sounds like a story that could even has the makings of a Hollywood movie! Noble Rot is available as an ebook for $8.78 on amazon.com.au

North West Fest bigger and better over three days
By Ben Leahy The Pilbara’s biggest music festival has just got bigger after Port Hedland councillors last month voted to expand the North West Festival into a three-day event, Paul Kelly (right), Bernard Fanning (below) and Grinspoon were among the headliners at last year’s August 24 festival, which drew an estimated 3850 music fans. The Town of Port Hedland now hopes to boost attendances in 2014 by including an additional mini concert at the Turf Club on the Friday night and a sundown event at the Civic Centre Gardens on the Sunday. The Friday mini concert will feature “local acts and mid to high profile Australian acts”, while Sunday’s sundowner will act as a finale with primarily acoustic and DJ performances. Saturday’s main concert will still be the festival’s headline event. Port Hedland mayor Kelly Howlett said with the event now running over three days, more Pilbara musicians would also be able to take part. “The North West Festival is the town’s chance to showcase all that Port Hedland has to offer on a national and
regional level,” Cr Howlett said. “A three-day festival means we can celebrate and promote local talent alongside the big names in the music industry.” Now in its third year, the North West Festival has been highly successful, according to the Town of Port Hedland local government. The January council meeting minutes said the festival was meeting its objectives to attract tourism and help diversify Hedland’s economy and music and arts scene. “Since the inaugural festival in 2012, the North West Festival has been a major tourism and economic development draw card for the Town of Port Hedland,” Cr Howlett said. “By expanding the festival into a three day event, this gives us more opportunity to develop and promote our local arts and culture, as well as continuing to provide diversification of the local economy. “We’re hoping to secure more corporate sponsors this year so we can make it even better than last year, and also reinforce the sustainability and economic and tourism potential of the festival to our event partners.” Headline acts for the 2014 event are yet to be announced, but updates will be released on northwestfestival.com.au

St John train Hedland students in first aid The Hedland community has embraced first aid in recent times with St John Ambulance WA delivering training to almost every student in the district. St John North West regional manager Wil White said he was delighted that so many young people had taken part in the free training program. “This surge in interest in First Aid Focus, our schools based first aid program, resulted in 1800 students being trained in Port and South Hedland schools,” he said. “The response we’ve had from these schools has been really positive – the teachers, students and parents have all been very supportive.” In 2013, St John provided this training to more than 100,000 schoolchildren – the first time this number has ever been achieved. Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report By Jenni Gates Steve Vitali was fishing the shoreline around the Mildura Wreck access road recently and used crab and squid to target bluebone. The bluebone frequent this area regularly and are a hard fighting fish that can be challenging to land. Steve got some weird soft bites and hooked something that seemed rather unusual as it didn’t bite hard like the bluebone usually do. He brought it to the surface and to his surprise he caught a massive rock lobster that measured three times the length of his stubbie. Despite it not being a tasty bluey, it was a rather delicious and unexpected surprise that is always good for dinner. Nat Everett has entered the monthly fishing comp with a 68cm spangled emperor that was caught on a Maria stick bait off Tantabiddi recently, while she was fishing with her partner Tosh. Nat is pictured this week with her great catch and beaming smile. The fish was released again and this style of fishing with surface lures can be very rewarding for anglers.
The action is tense and very visual as the fish hunt down the lure. All entrants for the monthly fishing comp for January were fantastic, with the winner being Scott Bolt and his marlin. Congratulations Scott. A 3m tiger shark was also caught by some recreational anglers fishing from the beach this last week. The fish was brought to the shore and carefully handled before release. There has been quite a bit of interest with shark fishing lately, with night time fishing for these species being very productive, not to mention cooler than the days. The balmy nights are still around 30C on the gulf side, but substantially cooler on the west side.
The rains have continued to fall on the eastern side of the gulf and this is great news for the fishing year ahead, with high rainfall in this area feeding the mangroves and creeks that run in to the gulf. The Exmouth Gulf is a very healthy ecosystem, and you can catch just about any species in here where the mean depth is around 12m. The creeks can be very tricky to navigate, and we don’t recommend going there without plenty of planning and time. However, the gulf waters hold much more variety and are much safer for navigation. We hope the rain will continue over there and add to the excitement for the year.

West Coast Eagles footballers paid Pilbara students a visit last week as Josh Kennedy and Chris Masten dropped by Newman and Matt Priddis and Dom Sheed visited Hedland. The players met school students in both towns as part of the Kicking Goals program to conduct football clinics and talk about the importance of sport and education. Kicking Goals is a program run in the Pilbara in conjunction with the Swan Districts Football
Club and BHP Billiton and is one of Australia’s largest regional based AFL mentoring programs. It is a curriculumbased, incentive program whereby students must meet performance indicators to reap the rewards of the initiative. Among the incentives for Kicking Goals students are 10 visits by Eagles players each year and the chance to play in a curtain raiser game before a West Coast Eagles home match. The most sought after prize, however, is the Melbourne incentive trip, where three
lucky Kicking Goals students are taken to watch some of the best AFL matches of the season live at the MCG and Docklands. The Kicking Goals program writes that it has helped play a part in a 35 per cent decrease in criminal activity in the Pilbara as well as a marked reduction in anti-social behaviour at Newman and Hedland high schools. One of the biggest benefits to the community is the 200 hours of personal time each student spends in community volunteering.

Applications for the Recfishwest Small Community Grant program for 2014 are now open and close on March 31. The grant funding goes toward community projects that enhance recreational fishing. The Recfishwest Small Community Grant Program has funded more than 30 projects totalling $150,000 since 2012. Recfishwest chief executive officer Dr Andrew Rowland said previous Recfishwest Small Community Grant projects have included installation of FADs, club development activities, fish stocking, projects to improve fishing safety, clean up days and environmental rehabilitation projects. “Recfishwest small community grants will be made available to incorporated bodies for community-driven projects aimed at enhancing recreational fishing in Western Australia,” Dr Rowland said. “A maximum of $8,000 will be made available for any one project, with preference given to projects less than $5,000 and to projects from a wide range of regions.” Applications for funding must be in relation to either the improvement of facilities, fishing safety, the education and promotion of fishing or habitat protection. Dr Rowland said engaging with community groups is a wonderful way to achieve amazing results
Recfishwest board member Joe Petrovich during rock lobster season. with a modest investment. Recfishwest is pleased that the small grant program has seen funding approved for projects all around the state ranging from Esperance in the South to Derby in the North. Hedland baseball team the Swans can finally dust off their major league trophy cabinet after spending years in the wilderness. The Black and Whites made easy work of avoiding any last minute minor-premiership challenge from nearest rivals the Sharks during baseball their clash on February 8. Nathan Nordmann’s three-run missile in the fifth innings sealed the game, giving the Swans an unassailable 19 runs to nine mercyrule victory and their first big trophy for two-decades. Ash Christensen took on the number one spot for Swans and pitched four innings to earn four strike-outs, while conceding nine safe hits for just four earned runs as the Sharks left numerous runners stranded. Nathan Bann led the Swans hit list with two singles from two charged plate appearances along with two walks, three runs scored and one run batted in. Daniel Frost and Kyle Edwards also picked up a double and single plus two RBI apiece. Josh Cosgrove brought in three
runners, with two RBI from his only base hit and another from a loadedbases walk, and Nordmann finished with two from five and four big RBI. The Sharks outhit their opponents with 13 safe hits, but were unable to capitalise with runners on base as Chris O’Hara led the way with a perfect three hits from three at bats for a 1000 average. The result also gives the Swans the home berth in the threegame grand final series starting on Wednesday March 5, with game 2 on Saturday March 8 and the third, if required, the following Saturday. Last Saturday’s night game was again cancelled with the Pirates collecting two valuable points and coming within one game of the second-placed Sharks, who they also hold a big percentage advantage over. The two sides will now clash in their final regular game of the season, while the Swans will host the Brewers. As the minor-premiers, the Swans will want to showcase their finals side and end the home and away games with a win, while the Brewers will need to dig deep and look at a major upset to finally put some points on the 2013-14 board.

Conditions had not changed since Round Two of the mountain bike Summer Series last month (pictured here) - it is still scorching hot on the trails.
Mountain bikers brave heat and march flies Despite blazing summer temperatures, the Pilbara’s mountain bike community has shown just how enthusiastic it is with 58 riders turning out for the February 8 social ride. Round 3 of the Burrup Mountain Bike Club’s Summer Series took riders around a 4.2km primarily single track loop that didn’t contain too many technical challenges but did have a few short hills to set the hearts rates going. And with temperatures in the high 30s, riders stopped
early for an ice cold drink, while many others pushed on to complete up to four laps within the hour of racing allowed. With the Summer Series being held to give new riders a chance to try out mountain biking, there are no prizes or awards given out to the winners of the events, just a slap on the back and some friendly banter. And with plenty of new faces, young riders and even bikers from Newman and Hedland gathered for the race,
Karratha mountain biking really is growing exponentially. The only downside was that the march flies were out in force and put an abrupt end to the social banter that the club members usually enjoy after each race. Round 5 of the Summer Series is next up on March 9 starting early in the morning to beat the heat. For more information check out the Burrup Mountain Bike Club Facebook page.
