Adventures in the Pilbara bring Leanne rich rewards By Ben Leahy Pilbara resident Leanne Mott last week enjoyed an overnight stay in Point Samson thanks to the above panorama she snapped at 80 Mile Beach north of Port Hedland. Leanne entered her snap in the My Pilbara Adventure Facebook page bimonthly competition in which members of the public post their own photos and tourist slogans on the page for the chance to win prizes. Leanne’s picture and slogan, “Every day is a new adventure! Discover the Pilbara”, picked up the most “likes” on the page and she consequently won a free dinner and stay in the spa suite at Point Samson’s Tatas resort. Hedland’s west end marina blocked by EPA By Ben Leahy A bid to create a marina in Port Hedland’s west end for tourist and residential development has been deemed unacceptable by the state’s environmental regulator. The Environmental Protection Authority found that exposure to dust from nearby iron ore operations was too high to allow the project to go ahead. The EPA’s refusal is a blow for the Town of Port Hedland, which had for many years been hoping to convert the site north of Sutherland Street into the town’s cultural and commercial “soul”. It had hoped to have boat ramps, public areas, residential apartments and shops built on the 60ha site. However, EPA chairman Paul Vogel said the site is exposed to higher than normal levels of dust, including PM10 sized fine particulates, which are associated with a significantly increased health risk, particularly for the very young and elderly. The EPA last year also refused a bid by the Town of Port Hedland to rezone industrial land in the port’s west end on the same grounds. “As with its decision in 2013, the EPA has taken a precautionary approach with

are known, the environmental regulator said the Town of Port Hedland could again consider submitting its bid to rezone the land for use as a marina to the EPA.

The EPA’s determination is not open to appeal. The Minister for Environment will now consult with the Minister for Planning before making any decision.

Pelago apartments going cheap By Ben Leahy Pilbara service workers will be able to co-purchase onebedroom apartments in the new Pelago East apartments for 60 per cent of the sale price under a new government scheme announced last week. Eligible buyers will then be able to share ownership with the State Government’s Department of Housing, which will pick up the remaining 40 per cent of the purchase price. Housing Minister Bill Marmion said the scheme was another step in bringing more permanent service workers into the region. “Key workers are essential to keeping regions sustainable and include skilled and semi-skilled workers employed in childcare, education, emergency services, healthcare and hospitality,” Mr Marmion said. “Purchasing a unit through the shared home-ownership scheme with a “SharedStart” home loan will enable applicants to bridge the gap between the cost of the property and what they can afford.” Under the loan scheme, 29 dwellings in the recently completed Pelago East development on Sharpe Avenue in Karratha will be available to eligible owner-occupiers.

Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive John Lally welcomed the announcement. “Anything that encourages people to buy their own homes and work in the area has got to be good for the town,” Mr Lally said. “If people can be involved in buying their own property in Karratha it means that they will stay here long term.” Mr Lally also acknowledged the government’s plan was an unusual one. “I’ve never heard of anything like this scheme (being done somewhere else),” Mr Lally said. But he said he didn’t see the plan as a move to prop up a Karratha housing market in which housing prices have fallen to their lowest levels in five years. Rather he said the government would be pleased with a recent trend toward an increased presence of owneroccupiers in the Pilbara. “The anecdotal evidence I’m hearing is that there are more people buying their own houses now,” Mr Lally said. “Previously, 70 per cent of all houses were owned by absentee landlords, but now that rate is dropping and the

number of owner occuppiers is rising.” Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the initiative was funded by $30.4 million from the state government’s Royalties for Regions program. “This project focuses on delivering housing options to workers quickly, by investing in private sector residential housing developments that are already through the planning stage,” Mr Redman said. “The cost of purchasing goods and services in the Pilbara, including housing, is down 13.5 per cent since 2011. “The decrease reflects the investment the Government has made … in increasing housing availability, diversifying regional economies and providing better health, education and community facilities in regional Western Australia.” Pelago Apartments sales will be offered to residents through North West Realty in Karratha. Cultural precinct design released A new cultural precinct will sit at the entrance to Karratha’s city centre under plans endorsed by the Shire of Roebourne Council at its February meeting. The project is set to include a performing arts centre to replace the greatly missed Walkington Theatre, an art gallery to display some of the Shire’s extensive art collection, a roof-top cinema, outdoor amphitheatre and a home for the Shire’s library and local history collections. Set on the corner of the Dampier Highway and Sharpe Avenue, it is hoped locals love the architecture of the precinct and that the building becomes the shire’s cultural heart.

Shire of Roebourne president Peter Long said a cultural centre was long overdue for the region. “The Walkington Theatre served us very well, but since its closure we haven’t had any dedicated performing arts spaces,” Cr Long said. “Having a cultural precinct will allow us to attract a whole new range of entertainment options to our shire, whether it be dance, music, theatre, comedy or ballet. “We have a thriving cultural scene with events like (the) Red Earth Arts Festival and the Cossack Art Awards and a dedicated cultural hub will take this to the next level.” The projected cost of the

project is $45 million with the Shire to seek funding from corporate partners and the state and federal governments. The architectural design will feature prominent public art and effects that help connect it to the natural environment. “With new developments like the The Quarter and the GP Superclinic set to push the envelope of design in Karratha, the Cultural Precinct will feel right at home on Sharpe Avenue,” Cr Long said. The Shire of Roebourne will now engage an architect and quantity surveyor to progress the project to the detailed design phase.

Flying Foam Massacre remembered this weekend By Ben Leahy The Flying Foam Massacre in which up to 150 aboriginal people were killed on the Burrup Peninsula in 1868 will be commemorated this Sunday February 23. The massacre is thought to be one of the largest in Australia’s history with colonial settlers and pearlers forming posses to hunt down Yaburara aboriginal men, women and children. Last year, it was publicly commemorated for the first time as around 40 local elders, politicians and community members gathered on the Burrup for a small ceremony. This year, descendants of the Yaburara people along with other Pilbara aboriginal groups will again gather to remember those who were killed in 1868. The occasion will also be used to renew calls to have the estimated one million rock art engravings in the Burrup Peninsula and Dampie Archipelago World-Heritage listed. Remembrance day organiser Audrey Cosmos said the area and its rock art was still under threat from development by industry.

Most recently in 2006-07, Woodside removed more than 900 rock engravings to make way for its Pluto LNG project, despite unanimous opposition from local aboriginal groups. “It’s important to bring the massacre and the rock art all together,” Ms Cosmos said. “Some of those killed would have been making the rock art, and it’s actually their story. “None of the aboriginal groups agreed with what Woodside did at Pluto, there’s strong feeling in the community about it.” The Flying Foam remembrance day has the support of the Shire of Roebourne. “The Flying Foam massacre was a terrible event in the shire’s history and it is important that we as a community commemorate and remember it,” shire president Peter Long said. “The shire supports the community members and local elders who are organising the memorial and we would be pleased (to) attend and to formally participate in any way that we are asked.” For details of the time and place of the ceremony, contact June Moorhouse on 0418 920 435.

The Dampier Community Hub is another step closer to reality following the approval of schematic designs for the project earlier this month. The plans were presented to the shire’s project team by visiting architects Gresley Abas, who have now been given approval to move to the next stage of the project. This will involve the design of detailed elements such as fittings, fixtures and room functionality. Shire of Roebourne president Peter Long said architects had designed plans for a unique building that appropriately responded to environmental and community desires. “There hasn’t been any significant development in Dampier for nearly two decades so this is a really exciting project for the local community and the shire,” Cr Long said. “We’ve been working closely with community groups and residents to ensure we get this right and deliver a truly iconic building that meets the needs

and desires of the community.” The project is part of the shire’s partnership with Rio Tinto, which is set to deliver significant community infrastructure improvements in Wickham, Dampier and Karratha, as well as a range of new and improved cultural events and community services and programs. Rio Tinto general manager – port operations Nick Serle said the project was important to the Dampier community and contributed to the long term sustainability of services and facilities in the town. ”It’s exciting to see the vision becoming a reality following ongoing engagement with the community,” Mr Serle said. “Rio Tinto is pleased to work together with the Shire of Roebourne to deliver improved infrastructure, services and events to the region.” Construction of Dampier Community Hub is anticipated to start towards the end of this year and be completed in 2015.

Residents have say on suburb redevelopment More than 90 local residents attended the Karratha Revitalisation workshop last week to provide input that will help shape the future for Karratha suburbs Millars Well, Pegs Creek and Bulgarra. The session was the first of three public workshops. Shire of Roebourne president Peter Long said the revitalisation plan was the next step in Karratha’s transformation from mining town to city. “A huge amount of effort has been put into revamping Karratha to make it a more liveable city with a diverse and affordable range of

accommodation, world class infrastructure and a city centre we can be proud of,” Cr Long said. “The Karratha Revitalisation Plan is about writing the next chapter in Karratha’s story. “Having input from the community allows us to properly plan for future improvements.” In addition to the public workshops, members of the community can contribute to the Karratha Revitalisation Plan through an online mapping tool that allows anyone to post comments on an aerial photo of the three suburbs. “Collaborative Map is

The Dampier Port Authority is looking to house permanent staff in Onslow after it gained approval to build three homes on First Avenue. The multi-residential development will support operations at the Port of Ashburton, which the DPA is developing. The Port of Ashburton under DPA’s jurisdiction will include about 312ha of coastal area and 250km² port waters and seabed adjacent to Chevron’s Wheatstone site. A renowned expert in early childhood learning visited the Pilbara earlier this month to see how a system he helped pioneer is helping to boost indigenous education. Emeritus Professor Joe Sparling from the University of North Carolina pioneered an early childhood system called the Abecedarian Approach that is being used at Gumala Aboriginal Corporation’s 3A Paraburdoo and Wakuthuni Early Childhood Centres. The 3A learning system is based on the Abecedarian Approach that Professor Sparling developed from a 30year research study conducted with “at-risk children”. The research found that simple tools could help double a child’s learning capacity and improve their health and well-being and life prospects and now forms the basis for the 3A learning system used at Gumala’s Paraburdoo and Wakuthuni centres. “I visited the two centres (on February 12) and was happy to see parents who are engaged with their children,” Prof Sparling said. “(I also) heard that the primary school is noticing a difference (between) the children who have attended 3A opposed to the children who haven’t, so the early signs are very promising.”

The basic principle behind the 3A program is to interact intensively with children from a young age. This is done by using learning games daily, reading stories in an interactive way and improving language skills through intensive and enjoyable conversations. “There is clear evidence that the 3A students are much more likely to go to university, more likely to succeed and even (the) parents feel benefits, particularly single mothers, who see their child … want to do better,” Prof Sparling said. “Some unexpected benefits that we have found in the past 30 years include health benefits such as lower rates of high cholesterol, hypertension and obesity compared to children who have not been exposed to the program.” Gumala’s general manager of education Lynne Beckingham said the program was the first of its kind in WA and helped fill

a void in local early childhood education. “GAC identified that communities in the Pilbara had no access to early childhood programs … for children (aged up to five years),” Ms Beckingham said. She said Gumala selected the Abecedarian Approach because there are large amounts of evidence showing that it works. Local principal from Paraburdoo Primary Troy Withers said the 3A program helped indigenous kids arrive at school better prepared to learn. “3A creates a positive relationship with the Aboriginal community … and the school,” he said. “It will break down perceived barriers and encourage students to engage in and attend school.” Gumala began its 3A program after forming a partnership with the University of Melbourne’s School of Education in 2011. Since then, the WA state government has also signed an agreement with Gumala to link the program to the local primary schools. Today Gumala runs three 3A centres and will be opening two more in the Pilbara soon.

Alliance making our roads safer By Ben Leahy Road Safety Council chairman professor Murray Lampard said he believes Pilbara roads are much safer as a result of an alliance between government and private industry that was formed in 2010. The Pilbara Industry Road Safety Alliance (PIRSA) is made up of representatives from local government, Main Roads, WA Police and business and helps run education and awareness campaigns. The alliance’s latest initiative is to display crumpled vehicles in Pilbara towns to give a visual reminder of the dramatic effect of car crashes. Prof Lampard said he was visiting Karratha on February 20 to meet members of the alliance and to “recognise the excellent work” they do. “It is really important that I as the chairman of the Road Safety Council come up and acknowledge and recognise the work of such a productive and effective committee,” he said. “I am a great believer in local people solving local problems and not the world according to the gospel from the city-ites in Perth.” Among the key challenges facing Pilbara roads is the growth in population and cars.

With some $190 billion in resources projects under way or planned in the next 10 years, the WA government hopes to grow the population of cities, such as Karratha and Port Hedland to 50,000 people by 2035. But according to PIRSA, it is not just the sheer volume of traffic, but the diverse range of different vehicles and drivers using the roads, from mining vehicles to tourists with caravans, that pose risks. With that in mind the alliance has run a number of awareness campaigns, such as publishing a handbook for tourist drivers. Among tips in the book are reminders about the effects of fatigue and that caravans can sometimes cause tensions with other drivers. The book advises caravan drivers with CB radios to use the same channel as truck drivers so that they can communicate with each other. Another initiative of the alliance is to increase the number of roadside coffee stops in the Pilbara. Steve Scott from Karratha police station said police had also introduced a dedicated Pilbara traffic team to enforce road safety. In 2013 across the Pilbara, police brought 3033 court related charges and issued 11,800 traffic infringements.

A pilot had to make a crash landing after his Cessna 206’s engine failed shortly after take-off.

Newman man walks away from plane crash By Ben Leahy A Newman man has walked away from a light plane crash after the aircraft’s engine failed shortly after take-off. The 37-year-old had taken off in a Cessna 206 from Newman airport at 6am before he was forced to make a landing 2.5km north-east of Newman airport. Incredibly, he was able to walk away from the accident

injury-free despite damage to the plane’s wings and cockpit. After calling police to the accident scene using his mobile phone, the man, who did not have any passengers with him, chose not to go to hospital for a check-up. Sergeant Mark Garner from Newman police said the man, who had been a pilot since 2008, showed tremendous calm and skill to glide the plane onto the ground without any power.

“It happened about 2000 feet, he lost an engine and put it down nice and straight, nice and flat, except it wasn’t on the runway … he glided it in,” Sgt Garner said. “He didn’t panic, kept calm, I put it down to his skill. A very lucky man … I’ve spoken to him a couple of times and he is not buying a lotto ticket, he has used all his luck up.” Police have notified the Air Transport Safety Bureau.

By Ben Leahy The Pilbara Indigenous Nursery in Roebourne has blossomed as a start-up business after winning major contracts with the state government’s land developer LandCorp. The nursery, which is owned by the Mingullatharndo community, has secured contracts to supply native plants for landscaping projects at Karratha’s Gap Ridge Industrial Estate and Mulataga residential development. And the experience gained at Gap Ridge is helping the nursery pick up more work, according to manager Beth Smith. “The contract for Gap Ridge has been a positive step for the nursery as it’s allowed us to attract more work from other landscaping projects in the area,” she said. These include providing plants for Roebourne’s new Ngarluma Yindjibarndi Foundation Limited nursery and landscaping for the Ngarluma Housing Project. Ms Smith said the nursery was busy picking and germinating seeds for the $1.5 billion,168ha Mulataga coastal development. Plants cultivated by the nursery include many species of eucalyptus, sennas and wattles, which Ms Smith said has proven popular because of their variety in size, shape and colour. Managing risk in start-up businesses By Ben Leahy Pilbara not-for-profit groups and small business start-ups can learn more about what it takes to manage business risk in a new workshop at the Pilbara Institute this March. The workshop will focus on legal procedures that help startups choose a business structure that maximises flexibility and protects personal assets from exposure to risk. Madeline Boulton, a solicitor from Cleary Hoare Solicitors, will run the Start-Up and Operating Structures workshop, which has

been organised by the Pilbara Institute and Small Business Centre West Pilbara. “Risk is part of being in business – there is always a risk of being sued by a dissatisfied customer, of having bad debts, an employee making a claim and so on,” Ms Boulton said. “However, you can mitigate the potential fallout of a bad day at the office by ensuring that your business is structured effectively so that your personal assets, such as your home, are not exposed. “In the workshop, there will be information provided for

businesses in the start-up phase as well as information on steps that can be taken to improve asset protection for those already in business.” The workshop is one of a series of workshops at the Pilbara Institute’s Pilbara Skills Centre aimed at boosting the amount of training that is available to local small business and not-for-profits. Tijuana Cartel top the bill for Exmouth’s Whaleshark Festival By Ben Leahy The Ningaloo Whaleshark Festival is back on May 22 to 25 and organisers are looking for as many Exmouth community members as possible to get involved. Community groups, artists, musicians, buskers, stallholders and volunteers who want to be involved should contact the committee. Festival highlights this year include a fun run, float parade, bands, circus and fire show, kids beach games and art exhibitions. Bands including reggaecum-electronic acts Tijuana Cartel and New Soundland, blues rockers Blue Shaddy and Huge Magnet will headline the festival alongside many other local and touring musicians. Gulliver the giant whale shark will also be on display with marine expert Dr Brad Norman giving an information session on the whale shark and the photo ID program that helps ordinary community members contribute to scientific research. Other visiting scientists and research groups will also talk about their findings.

The festival kicks off on Friday night, May 22, with a gala opening at the Novotel Ningaloo Resort as Grace Barbe from the Seychelles Islands performs with her band Afro-Kreol. The next day the festival fun run starts proceedings, after which an early breakfast and series of activities will be held at Exmouth’s Talanjee Oval. Sunday is Family Day at Town Beach and will feature beach games and night entertainment, including fire juggling, live music and circus shows. There is also the chance to swim with the whale sharks – the biggest fish in the world – which visit Ningaloo waters between April and July each year.

“Thanks to the community’s continued support and our generous supporters we have re-established the festival as a successful annual event on the state calendar,” Whaleshark Festival committee chairman Darren Cossill said. “We are (now) calling on market stallholders to book and confirm their spots at the festival.” Stall application forms are to be returned by Wednesday, April 30. Each 45-minute Music and Movement class is designed specifically for 0 to two-yearolds, but babies as young as

12 weeks have come along in the past and benefited greatly. Class co-ordinator Conor said the program is based on a similar class she attended in Sydney while visiting her sister and young nephew. During each session parents sing and perform accompanying movements

that their babies or young toddlers can either watch or join in with. Music and Movement classes are not only excellent for encouraging early language development in children and stimulating their senses, it is also a fun way for parents to meet other young families and learn the words

Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report By Jenni Gates

Have we got a fishing tale for you all this week. It happened when two boatloads of friends from Perth were trawling for marlin off Tantabiddi. One boat hooked up to a marlin that immediately took off, running so fast that the reel was to the point of spooling completely and breaking the line. A short time later, a deep diving lure on the other boat became foul hooked. The guys with the deep diver subsequently brought in their lure and found out that it had become tangled with the line from the other boat. They managed to come tight on the line and realised that the marlin was still attached – but the story gets better than this. So, apparently, the guys, who had hooked the marlin from the first boat now threw the original reel and rod into the second boat so those guys could finish reeling in the marlin. And guess what? The fish was landed. After a quick photo, the line is now back on the reel and the fish is swimming freely. If that is not the best fishing story you have ever heard, I’d like to know what is? The friends from the two boats are regular visitors to Exmouth and often fish the major Gamex fishing tournament here.

They have been catching lots of billfish according to daily reports and we are pleased to hear they are having such a great fun time. The fish pictured this week is a rare one to find in Exmouth. Exmouth resident Leanne Walters is the woman in the photo with her first 1m-plus barramundi. Leanne loves her fishing and has fished many areas in the Kimberly and further east, but never landed a fish bigger than the magic 1m mark. Leanne was super excited to land the fish off the banks at Telegraph Pool on the Fitzroy River. Are you planning on fishing in the Australian International Billfish Tournament or Gamex this year? Entries must be in soon or penalties will apply – it makes it much easier for organisers to co-ordinate these large-scale events if people put their entries in early. This year, the Gamex action is not just on the water. There are all sorts of activities on land as well for partners and visitors to enjoy, including live music, a ‘bling’ themed social evening, reef and beef barbecue, celebrity chef luncheon, Sunday Fun Day with music for kids and much more. Dreams come true for footballers By Ben Leahy Six Pilbara footballers are hoping to strut their stuff on the biggest stage of all at the MCG this May. Stephen Hodder, Ash Cooper, Don Lockyer, Matt Lorne, Micky Ball and Kelman Tullock from Hedland, Wickham and Karratha are part of two indigenous teams that will contest the Rio Tinto Cup on May 31. The game will be played in front of a vocal MCG crowd as a curtain-raiser ahead of the AFL’s Dreamtime At The ’G match between Richmond and Essendon. And earlier this month, the young men had their first hitout as part of the Rio Tinto Footy Means Business program by attending the initial training camp in Perth on February 10-15. During the camp, they took part in cultural, educational and community activities, while also training intensively for a game between teams coached by former AFL players Aaron Davey and David Rodan. Karratha player Ash Cooper was a standout during the game as he was named among the best players in Team Davey and contributed on the scoreboard by kicking a goal. Matt Lorne also hit the scoreboard with one goal for the opposing Team Rodan.

Pilbara footballers join with other Indigenous players from the 2014 Footy Means Business squad. The young men are following in the tradition of past Pilbara players with Karratha’s Chris Wailu starring in last year’s Rio Tinto Cup curtain-raiser where he captained the winning team. The Rio Tinto Cup and Footy Means Business program is an annual initiative in which 50 indigenous men, aged 18 to 24, are exposed to elite AFL programs and training, along with networking opportunities in corporate environments. Following the February camp, the players will next meet for the second training camp in May, which will culminate in the Rio Tinto Cup on the MCG. AFL head of diversity Jason Mifsud said the program helps participants achieve their goals and reach their football potential.

“The AFL and Rio Tinto Footy Means Business program is committed to providing talent and development opportunities for young indigenous men from all over Australia, with the aim of seeing an increase in indigenous players selected to play at state and elite AFL level,” Mr Mifsud said. “We are excited to appoint former AFL stars Aaron Davey and David Rodan as the head coaches of the squad and anticipate great talent outcomes from this year’s group of participants, both on and off the field.” The Pilbara men were selected to attend the training camps based on their football ability, engagement with their communities and their potential to serve as a role model.

Sally said the Ladies MTBers beginner rides are open to anyone and help women build up their skills and confidence on the mountain bike, while also having a regular chuckle. Her next round of beginner ladies rides kick off on March 2 and will run for four-weeks – you don’t even have to own a mountain bike to take part. New riders can borrow one of three spare bikes owned by the Burrup Mountain Bike Club. Sally said that even ladies who don’t think they could ever ride a mountain bike will be surprised how fun it is and how fast they improve. She said most keen female mountain bikers in Karratha first built up their confidence by attending the ladies rides.

And while few women ever got airborne on their bikes a year ago, such is the success of female mountain biking that a number of them are now regularly dashing off jumps and drop offs.

“To date, we’ve had a fantastic response to the project with many sporting clubs keen to utilise our facilities,” Cr White said.

“With four club rooms, an umpire room, bar and kitchen facilities, change rooms, a canteen and plenty of storage, we expect around 5000 people to utilise the oval and pavilion every year for training nights, game days and events.”

Pony club looking for new members By Ben Leahy The Karratha Pony Club is on the lookout for young riders after holding a sign-up day and barbecue at the Frank Butler Centre on February 16. The club registered 11 junior horse lovers on the day and expects to have more than 15 riders and ponies joined up by the time the season officially starts in April. But it is not just young horse lovers with ponies the club is chasing. This year, the club is hoping to expand its Riders Without Ponies program that it started in 2013. The program allows junior horse lovers, who don’t own a pony, to join the club and learn more about horse riding. Pony Club president Adrian Whiting said children who join Riders Without Ponies do not get to ride a horse but they do get up close to the animals and learn how to look after, groom and train them. “Riders Without Ponies is still an opportunity for children to learn about horses, how a horse works and everything that goes along with a horse apart from riding,” he said. Mr Whiting said keeping a horse in the Pilbara was expensive

Most local riders keep their horses in southern Western Australia during the cyclone season from November to March before transporting them to the Pilbara during the club’s season from April to October. Horse owners also have to pay for a stable and yard at the Karratha Agistment Centre to house their horses. “It is expensive in the Pilbara

so that is why we try to make it fun and involve as many people as we can so that we can become a bigger group,” Mr Whiting said. But he said the expense was worth it because the Pilbara was a great place for horse riding. “One of the beautiful things about being in the Pilbara is we’ve got access to some great beaches that other people don’t have access to,” he said. “If you happen to hang out at

the local beaches of an afternoon, chances are you will see someone show up with a horse float and horse.” As well as getting the chance to ride through the surf, local children with horses also tend to make great friends at the Pony Club, Mr Whiting said. “The beauty of Pony Club for the kids is they get to bond with their horse, they get to play games with other kids, it is quite a social activity,” he said.

The club also runs a competition during the FeNaClNG Festival in which riders from Hedland and Exmouth and possibly Newman and Tom Price will hold dressage classes and compete in show jumping. The Pony Club is having a familiarisation meet on March 9. All interested children are encouraged to come along even if they have no experience with horses. Basketball back in Water polo teams head to Hedland for 2014 Country Championships By Ben Leahy Hedland basketball is back this weekend as the junior competition kicked off at Wanangkura Stadium on Friday, February 21, while the senior social league begins on March 7. The junior season for 2014 will run for six-weeks with skills training and matches taking place every Friday from 5pm to 6pm until March 28. Meanwhile, a new Senior Social Basketball Competition run by the YMCA and Town of Port Hedland starts on March 7 on the indoor and outdoor courts at Wanangkura and will run for a 10-week season.

With the junior competition catering to players aged nine to 16, the senior league will have separate games for men and women over 16. By Ben Leahy Karratha and Hedland water polo players will be hoping to make a splash at the WA Country Water Polo Championships in Busselton from February 28 to March 2. The Karratha Water Polo Association will send men’s and women’s teams to the threeday tournament to compete against sides from Busselton, Bunbury, Peel and Geraldton. Individual players from Port Hedland will also be travelling to Busselton and will be allocated to teams that are short on players. Karratha Water Polo Association secretary Anouska Angrove said it was a great effort to send teams to the Country Champs given that this was the first season of competition in town for years. “I’ll be surprised if the guys team don’t do really well at the Country Champs,” Ms Angrove said. “We’ve got some really good ex-state players and also the new guys that have come along this year have improved out of sight. “The women will go OK – we have a mix of brand new and experienced players – but mostly we are just stoked to be able to send a men’s and women’s side to the Country Champs.” Ms Angrove said the inaugural water polo season from October 2013 to March 2014 at the Leisureplex has been a great success. “We now boast nearly 60
