Giant cruise liners making waves By Ben Leahy The first of three giant cruise liners visited Port Hedland last week, bringing with it up to 2850 passengers and 1000 crew. The 316m-long Celebrity Solstice docked in Hedland on February 24 and will be followed by the Radiance of the Seas on March 6 before one of the world’s largest cruise ships, the Voyager of the Seas, visits on March 30. To welcome passengers from the Voyager – and make a healthy dime off them – the Hedland community will hold its first West End markets of

the year, featuring art, craft, food and retail stalls, on March 30. Port Hedland Port Authority chief executive officer Roger Johnston said the state government body had opened up the port to cruise ships to boost local tourism. “Whilst the port is regarded as one of the world’s largest and busiest iron ore terminals, the PHPA is also keen to support local tourism and give passengers the opportunity to disembark and explore this unique mining town,” he said. “Since 2011, the PHPA has facilitated the visit of eight cruise ships with plans to accommodate

the visit of more cruise ships in the coming years.” The West End market on Sunday March 30 will run from 8.30am to 1pm and stalls will be spread across the Courthouse Gallery Gardens, Glass Lane and Wedge St. Market organisers are on the lookout for artists, craftspeople, retailers, home-based businesses, food vendors and community groups interested in applying for a market stall. Applications are due by March 6 and information is available from the Courthouse Gallery and Port Hedland Visitor Centre.

Karratha land to be set aside for large retailers By Ben Leahy The state government is hoping to create a shopping precinct on the edge of Karratha that will allow whitegoods and hardware retailers to open large outlets. The government is gauging the interest of businesses keen to move to the 13.45ha site on the corner of Dampier Highway and Madigan Rd and will use that information to guide how it subdivides the land for development. Lands Minister Terry Redman said large-scale retail precincts directly benefited consumers by offering product and price competition. “This project will help attract new investment in the Pilbara and assist in meeting local demand for retail businesses as the town’s population grows to 50,000 people,” Mr Redman said. “The precinct will require businesses such as major whitegoods, hardware, automotive and electrical retail facilities seeking a strategic, highexposure location in Karratha to register their interest.” “(It) will also generate employment both directly and indirectly in areas such as construction and the ongoing jobs associated with retail,” he said. Karratha resident Tristan Wood-Hill, who owns a plumbing company of the same name, said he was already well served by hardware stores in town but

The state government hopes to allocate land for a shopping precinct for large retailers on the Madigan Rd/Dampier Highway intersection. thought that an area for large retailers would bring more choice. “The prices in a large outlet are likely to be fairly similar because of where we are and the freight charges,” Mr Wood-Hill said. “But it would be nice to have new products and lines coming into town and new opportunities.” “Most of the basic stuff I can get and if I can’t get it from my main supplier I will go to my secondary store and buy a different product to get the job done on time.”

“But it does also happen a lot with building products in the Pilbara that you go into stores and they say ‘Oh, that will be a week to get in’.” “Often when you quote a price for a customer and it includes a different kind of product, you have to make allowances in the Pilbara for those two or three weeks for shipping from the eastern states or overseas.” Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive officer John Lally said the chance for large retailers to move to bigger showrooms could free up more space in the CBD for smaller businesses.

“We are still short of retail space, but if the firms that need bigger showrooms – and some of them in Karratha are really crammed – move, it will give opportunities to other people to move into their premises,” Mr Lally said.

staff because 90 per cent of the business is self serve.”

However, Mr Lally was not so excited by the prospect of global retailers moving into town.

Mr Lally also said there might not yet be enough demand for big hardware stores.

“We’ve already got three hardware stores and if a big one comes into town it would likely obliterate those,” he said. “They all employ a lot of people, and what happens with big retailers is that they use less

“It is a tough one as a chamber of commerce – we have to encourage economic development, but bigger is not necessarily better for us at this stage of our development.”

“Seventy per cent of the houses are absentee landlords, there is not a lot of the home handyman hardware stuff in Karratha by comparison to Perth – and that is what the big stores rely on,” he said.

With Karratha’s property prices at their lowest since 2007 and rental prices their lowest since 2011, a national property analyst has said that the market bottom has yet to be reached. SQM Research managing director Louis Christopher said Pilbara prices had fallen due to both an increase in the supply of housing and a decrease in demand caused by the completion of mining projects in the region. “Does Karratha have a long-term future? My word it does. But right now it is in the midst of a major downturn because of this glut,” Mr Christopher said. “The decline in rents is incredible – we’ve seen rents fall by half. “The market is definitely in retreat, and I would argue that there is still some time until we see a bottom.”

Mr Christopher said his firm had recorded data similar to that recently published in the Pilbara Housing and Land Snapshot for the quarter ending in December 2013. The report prepared by the Pilbara Development Commission found that for sale and rental prices were in retreat across the Pilbara. The average advertised for-sale price in Port Hedland was $978,148 in the last quarter, which is the lowest figure since the September 2009 quarter, according to the report. The average advertised for-sale prices in Karratha were at their lowest since September 2007, with four-bedroom properties advertised from $470,000. Rental prices in Port Hedland also dropped for the sixth consecutive quarter from an all-time high of

Baked and Raised in the Pilbara

$2544 per week during the September 2012 quarter to a five-year low of $1530 per week in the latest quarter. Rental prices in Karratha, meanwhile, have dropped for nine consecutive quarters. Average prices were $1081 per week in the latest quarter, down from $1784 in the September 2011 quarter. Average rental prices in Newman are higher than Hedland and Karratha at $1720 per week, but they are still well down. Mr Christopher said the Pilbara market was still volatile, especially in Karratha where rents have fallen by almost 50 per cent. “You get corrections (in rental and sale prices) in capital cities – there was a fair correction in Melbourne – but historically speaking you don’t get these types of corrections in capital cities.” However, Ryan Crawford

from the Crawford Property Group played down any potential losses to investors. “The majority of investors already in the market will be taking a long-term perspective,” he said. “The industries in these towns aren’t going anywhere – we are only just seeing the start of the new Roy Hill operation and billions of dollars of projects still sit on the horizon.” Mr Crawford also highlighted a trend being reported anecdotally among agents that more owneroccupiers are starting to purchase properties in the Pilbara. The Pilbara Housing and Land Snapshot is available for free from the Pilbara Development Commission’s website. SQM Research data can also be viewed free on the company’s website.

Dampier oil and gas industry services provider Mermaid Marine announced a major international acquisition last week, coming on the back of its successes in the Pilbara. The Fremantle-based company is Australia’s largest marine services provider to the offshore oil and gas industry. Now it is set to become one of the largest offshore marine services companies in the Asia Pacific region after announcing it would acquire the subsidiary

businesses of Jaya Holdings, including shipyards in Singapore and Indonesia. Jaya has a fleet of 27 vessels that is uses to supply offshore oil and gas industries in South East Asia, the Middle East and East and West Africa. Mermaid currently owns and operates a fleet of 34 vessels located in supply bases in Dampier and Broome. These are used to ferry equipment and provide other services to oil and gas rigs and processing plants. The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of April.

Road toll lowest on record

Initiatives including an alliance between industry and government in the Pilbara have helped to lower Western Australia’s road toll. WA’s 2013 road toll was the lowest since records began in 1962, with 162 people losing their lives on the state’s roads. But despite the state recording 20 fewer deaths than in 2012, WA is still one of the worst states when ranked on a per capita basis – second only to Tasmania. Road Safety Minister Liza Harvey said that the recent spate of tragic crashes showed that plenty of hard work remained to

improve the safety of the state’s roads. “While having 20 fewer deaths than in 2012 and 43 fewer deaths than 2008 is a heartening achievement, it is very difficult to be pleased with a road toll that shows 162 people died on Western Australian roads,” Ms Harvey said. “One of the causal factors in fatal crashes that has had the biggest reduction has been the involvement of alcohol. “Last year 30 people died in alcohol related crashes, a 48 per cent reduction on the preceding five-year average. “This is a good result in context, but

still unacceptable for the Western Australian community. “2013 has been the best year to date for our road toll and for the number of alcoholrelated crashes, but now is not the time to be complacent, particularly with 30 fatalities last year still linked to drink driving.” The 2013 WA road statistics summary

released on February 27 also shows that 80 per cent of road fatalities in the state were male. It also revealed that 27 deaths were the result of not wearing a seatbelt. With the Labour Day long weekend now in full swing, drivers can be penalised double demerits for offences committed up until midnight on Monday, March 3.

By Ben Leahy Komatsu Australia has begun construction of a new service centre in Port Hedland to provide maintenance and support to the fleet of more than 900 Komatsu machines operating in the Pilbara. The Pilbara is one of the most important markets for the global company, with customers such as Rio Tinto operating a large fleet of Komatsu’s state-of-the-art driverless dump trucks. Komatsu also has a branch in Newman to service the East Pilbara and has a team of 60 staff living in the region, as well as 50 workers who fly-in and fly-out, managing director Sean Taylor said. “The Pilbara is a world-class mining precinct, which represents a significant portion of Komatsu Australia’s business,” Mr Taylor said. “It’s home to our Autonomous Haulage Fleet, and has one of the largest population of Electric Drive Mining Dump Trucks anywhere in the world. “It makes sense that we continue to invest in our capacity and capability in the Pilbara.” Situated on 9000sqm of land, the

1300sqm facility will replace the current Port Hedland branch, and will become Komatsu’s West Pilbara rebuild centre and parts warehouse. Construction on the centre is expected to be completed late this year and will include high bay workshops, a wash bay and 7000sqm yard, large warehouse and a powerful 25-tonne capacity crane. The centre has been designed to handle rebuilds of giant mining equipment, including the sizeable number of 290-tonne capacity electric drive dump trucks and wheel loaders operating in the Pilbara. Mr Taylor said Komatsu was also spending more on staff training. “Our investment goes beyond just bricks and mortar – we are also investing heavily in technical training so that our customers are assured that they are dealing with the experts,” he said. The Hedland expansion follows on from last year’s expansion of Komatsu’s Perth Mining assembly facility. The Perth facility assembles much of the mining equipment used in the Pilbara, including the world’s largest fleet of driverless trucks.

Small businesses can learn a lot from miners such as Rio Tinto. Photos by Christian Sprogoe Photography.

Getting back in black: learning from the miners

By John Lally The Pilbara’s big miners have surprised everyone by posting unexpectedly high returns this financial results season – and it seems like a lesson our local small businesses can also learn from. BHP Billiton leads the charge, bringing in roughly $1 billion more than anyone thought it would. Chief executive officer Andrew Mackenzie said the company achieved the result simply through corporate belt tightening. He said BHP’s commitment to improving cost-efficiencies and productivity paid off this year and saved the world’s biggest miner $5.4 billion. Closer to home Rio Tinto also exceeded expectations, with profits up 10 per cent on last year’s figures to $11.4 billion. Last week, Rio chief Sam Walsh told The Australian its focus on improving performance and “strengthening the balance sheet” was key to this year’s results rebound. Rio drove down its global operating

costs by $17.1 billion, a result Walsh described as “stunning”. And it’s not just the miners who are raising revenue through cost reduction. It seems everyone’s penny-pinching profits – even the banks. So how can local small to medium sized business get in on the act and benefit from this spend-less strategy? In an interview with News.com.au, small business advisor Andrew Griffiths, said many small businesses simply don’t charge enough. He said many lacked confidence when setting prices. However, he added that the key to charging what you’re worth was to also make sure that you deliver on what you’re offering. It might only be a $10 increase to your hourly rate, but over a 40-hour work-week that’s an extra $400 in your pocket – or $18,400 a year. Another tip is that while it might be scary, you have to know the good, the bad and the ugly about the financial state of your business. How much does it cost to open the

doors each day? What are the costs of rent, insurance, business loans, maintaining vehicles and so on? To take the words out of Sam Walsh’s mouth, it’s now time to “strengthen the balance sheet”. Look at your phone and internet providers – could you get a better deal elsewhere? Shop around for a cheaper interest rate or insurance premium. It might also be time to ask your suppliers what they can do better for you. Don’t pay retail prices because you are too small to buy in bulk. Instead, organise a group-buying arrangement with other small and medium enterprises. Sometimes you have to spend money to make money, so make sure you have a good bookkeeper or accountant on board to help you keep your head above water when times are tough. What are your thoughts on costcutting? Is it impacting your business? Tell me at ceo@kdcci.asn.au. John Lally is the chief executive officer of the Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

By Ben Leahy A small group of Pilbara community members commemorated the 1868 Flying Foam Massacre in a ceremony on the Burrup Peninsula last Sunday. During the Flying Foam Remembrance Day ceremony, Real Employment for Aboriginal People chief executive Triscilla Holborrow led those present in a minute’s silence before Wong-goo-tt-oo elder Wilfred Hicks told the story of the 1868 massacre. Up to 150 aboriginal people died in what is thought to be one of the largest massacres in Australia’s history, as European settlers formed

posses to hunt down Yaburara aboriginal men, women and children. The sites of the massacre are also located close to an estimated one million rock engravings made by Australia’s indigenous peoples, some of which are thought to have been carved up to 30,000 years ago. However, some of the areas containing this rock art are zoned as land on which heavy industry can be built. In 2006 and 2007, Woodside removed more than 900 rock engravings to make way for its Pluto LNG project. To help preserve the rock art and prevent it from being

developed as industrial land, Dr Ken Mulvaney, a Dampier resident and archaeological expert with more than 40 years experience, spoke about the need to get the area on the World Heritage List. Remembrance Day organiser Audrey Cosmos also called for World Heritage listing. “It’s important to bring the massacre and the rock art all together,” Ms Cosmos said. “Some of those killed would have been making the rock art, and it’s actually their story. Simultaneous Flying Foam Massacre Remembrance Day events were also held in Perth, Melbourne, Canberra and on the NSW Central Coast.

Skaters hope to ollie COMING SOON into action soon AT M O O N R I S E C I N E M A

Roebourne is closer to gaining a skate park after a design incorporating a community kitchen and landscaping plan was approved for construction earlier this month. The Roebourne skatespace has been designed by specialist skate park designers Convic in consultation with the Roebourne community and will feature moguls, quarterpipes, tacos and seating to relax. It will be integrated into a landscaping plan that will provide natural shade over much of the skating feature as well as its pathways and open spaces. Shire of Roebourne President Peter Long said the new facilities were just the beginning of the Roebourne Recreational Precinct, which will be created on the back of a large revitalisation project. “The shire has done a lot of planning work on what recreational facilities we need to deliver for Roebourne and we’re very excited to get this first stage off the ground,” Cr Long said. “We know that we need to deliver new youthfocused facilities and activities in Roebourne, and I have no doubt that this skatespace is going to be very popular,” he said. “The community kitchen is also an important element of the project, allowing community

groups to use the facilities and for functions to be catered.” Landscaping of the precinct will include a yarning circle, sand dancing area and the planting of mature trees to provide shade. Footpaths will also link existing facilities, including the basketball courts and aquatic centre. Future stages of the recreational precinct are planned for development over the next decade and include redeveloped aquatic facilities, a redeveloped community

hall and increased skating facilities. The Luke Adams Foundation will design, construct and project manage the community kitchen, while the shire will use the Western Australian Local Government Association’s preferred supplier list to find an appropriate builder for the skate park. “WALGA has some of the best skate park specialists on its books and … (this) will help us deliver this much needed infrastructure to the community more quickly,” Cr Long said.

Money found for skate park shade Long-awaited shade structures over Shire skate parks may soon be a reality with the Shire of Roebourne Council voting to expedite their purchase and installation. A $400,000 budget has been allocated to erect shade structures over the Karratha Skate Space and the Nickol West Skatepark. The shire previously tendered for the works to be conducted but received no responses. Shire of Roebourne chief executive officer Chris Adams said the best course of action following the tender process was to negotiate directly with suppliers to attract a qualified contractor. “We know how important it is to

the community to get shade structures up over these parks to give our young people protection from the sun,” Mr Adams said. “Our aim is to get someone on board as quickly as possible to get this project done as part of our commitment to providing high quality spaces for our youth. “If the Shire can find a qualified supplier for the project, it is anticipated the shade structures will be in place before the end of this financial year. “I’m really looking forward to getting someone on board to deliver this much-needed infrastructure that I know a lot of parents have been asking for.”

Dampier-to-Karratha water pipe completed has delivered essential work as the pipe had deteriorated and had proved difficult to access when maintenance was required previously,” she said. “Burying and replacing the pipe with a non-corrosive material reduces the frequency of maintenance and will further secure and protect the water supply to Dampier and the Burrup Peninsula.” The works to realign the pipeline started in October last year along the side of the highway and required some lane closures.

Ms Davies thanked the local community and road users for their patience during construction of the project. “I would like to thank road users for their understanding and for adhering to traffic management which was in place while the Water Corporation worked to secure the area’s water supply,” Ms Davies said. The project forms part of the state government’s $220 million investment in water and wastewater infrastructure in the West Pilbara.

By Ben Leahy Barrow Island worker Michael Pedrotti has been growing his dreadlocks for 16 years, but now their days are numbered after he nominated himself for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave. The 29-year-old is set to shave off his locks to support blood cancer research after medical specialists were able to save his dad, who was diagnosed with oesophagus cancer four-years ago. Michael’s dad is now in the clear after undergoing chemotherapy treatments. “Without fundraising and awareness programs such as this to fund money in all aspects of medical research, there would be a lot more empty beds, empty families and empty hearts,” Michael said. “The knowledge that medical teams worldwide have acquired through research … has given many people the luxury of a second chance in life.” Michael will join thousands of Western Australians on March 13-16 in shaving or colouring their hair to raise funds for research into treatments for blood cancer. The goal in WA is to raise more than $2.95 million. The money raised goes to Australia’s peak body for blood cancer research and support, the Leukaemia Foundation. The foundation receives no ongoing government funding and relies on community support to fund its work. Money from the World’s Greatest Shave supports important ongoing blood cancer research and provides free services. These include providing information, emotional

Since it began in 1998, Australians have raised more than $158 million through the World’s Greatest Shave. Funds raised go to the Leukaemia Foundation’s Vision

Schoolkids are notoriously fussy about what goes into their lunchboxes. But now local mums and toddlers have the chance to get some healthy tips from 2013 Masterchef contestant Liliana Battle. Liliana will run the Mums and miniMasterchefs cooking workshop at the Youth Shed this Wednesday, from 10am to noon. She will be showing mums, dads, toddlers and playgroups how to pack a fun and nutritious lunchbox. The event is free and all mums and dads need to bring is a lunchbox to pack the delicious goodies into. “I encourage all mothers’ groups and playgroups to attend,” senior youth officer with the Shire of Roebourne Kendell Kenway said.

Masterchef contestant Liliana Battle will share her lunchbox tips with parents on Wednesday. “The event is free and you will even walk away with a lunchbox full of yummy, fun and healthy snacks. “Kids will have the opportunity of getting their hands dirty too!” For Liliana, the mini-Masterchef class is right up her alley.

Her cooking skills have not only been tested under the pressure of having the professional chefs of Channel 10’s hit show watching her, but the Port Hedland mum has also been cooking for her family for the past 20 years.

Rio’s impresive new facility was officially opened last week.

Rio dining hall opens in Wickham Rio Tinto and Ngarluma Traditional Owners celebrated in Wickham last week for the official opening of Julutharndu Maya, a dining area that will be open to Rio Tinto workers and local residents. Rio Tinto said the spirit of the new facility was captured in its name, given to it in 2011 by the Ngarluma Traditional Owners, which means ‘everybody’s place’. Rio Tinto managing director for the Pilbara supply chain Clayton Walker said the he was pleased the facility would be open to the community as well.

“As well as providing FIFO employees who reside in Wickham with a fantastic facility which is more like a home away from home, the Julutharndu Maya facility is another place for local residents to have breakfast and dinner seven days per week in the beautiful new dining room,” Mr Walker said. The facility includes a 300-seat dining room that will serve a wide range of food, a transit lounge and a 24-hour gym, shower and locker facility. It replaces the old Wickham Village facility.

“Rio Tinto has set a new standard with this state-of the-art building … symbolising our longterm commitment to the Pilbara region,” Mr Walker said. “We are integrating our FIFO employees into the local Wickham community to provide benefits for all.” Julutharndu Maya is the latest development in Rio Tinto’s $300 million Wickham accommodation expansion project. The project is designed to house the additional residential and fly-in, fly-out workforce needed to service the company’s

Cape Lambert Port Operations. The town expansion includes 212 new houses which are under construction in Wickham South, with 36 of those already housing tenants. It also includes rooms for fly-in, flyout workers that have been completed at Cajuput Villas and are under construction at Wickham Lodge. Wickham Town Superintendent Jon Davison said the new building serves more than 400 meals each day and caters for up to 800 people. “The building has

a real `wow’ factor and we’ve had a lot of great feedback, with residents particularly impressed by the fit-out and finishes throughout the building,” Mr Davison said. The expansion forms part of the joint venture between Rio Tinto and the Robe River Iron Associates (Mitsui, Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metals Industries).

Melanoma March puts the spotlight on skin cancer By Ben Leahy

Clinton Heal founded MelanomaWA after being diagnosed with melanoma himself. – you can never let your guard down when protecting yourself from the harmful effects of the sun.” Clinton was himself diagnosed with metastatic melanoma in 2005 at the age of 22. He was playing in the West Australian Football League for Peel at the time and was working full time as a radiographer.

Since then, he has had 35 tumours removed from all over his body and has been on chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immune vaccine regimes. However, he has also lived an active life and in 2008 founded MelanomaWA to highlight how deadly melanoma is. Not only is it the third most common

Karratha will host a Melanoma March this month to raise awareness of the dangerous skin cancer, which is the third most common cancer in Australian men and women. Each year, the cancer is responsible for 1200 deaths in Australia with 10,000 new cases also diagnosed annually. The founder of MelanomaWA Clinton Heal said the Karratha march would involve a 4km walk from the Frank Butler centre and would help increase melanoma awareness and early detection in the community. He said money raised would also go to help people diagnosed with melanoma get access to information and support. “We are excited to bring the Melanoma March event to regional WA,” Clinton said. “Our message is especially important for communities up here in the North West

cancer among Australians, it is also the most common form of cancer among people aged 15-39, making it a young person’s disease. Melanoma is often referred to as “Australia’s cancer” because our country has the world’s highest incidence of it. With that in mind, the Karratha Melanoma March also hopes to raise funds for research into finding new therapies and a cure. The event will also include music, entertainment, face painting and food and drinks, and a skin education stall will be offering free skin screening for those who would like to get a check-up. The Karratha Melanoma March is a 4km walk starting at 5pm at the Frank Butler Community Centre. For more information and registration costs visit melanomawa.org.au or contact Clinton on 9322 1908.

Disadvantaged kids jump into sports By Ben Leahy Karratha’s less advantaged kids leapt into action over the school holidays as they took part in swimming, theatre, basketball, dance, tee-ball, baseball, mini golf and lawn bowls sessions run by Inclusion WA. Inclusion WA is dedicated to enriching the lives of those who are disadvantaged or living with a disability by helping them take part in sport and community life. Over the two-week January holiday program, 103 Karratha community members attended nine events. Inclusion WA said the program had been particularly successful at reaching out to community members who are not normally socially active. It said 78 per cent of those who attended the Inclusion WA activities were not currently members of a sports or community club.

Twenty three per cent of attendees also had a disability, while 25 per cent had an indigenous background. “This huge response indicates the need for the program and value of the initiative in the community’s eyes, particularly in January, a time where many families leave Karratha for the holidays,” Inclusion WA wrote in a report on the program. Inclusion WA’s local program was developed in mid-2011 in conjunction with Karratha community members who believed there was a need to give disadvantaged people more opportunities. Late last year, the program won an award for Child Safety at the Constable Care Awards in Perth, which honour the best children’s services and initiatives in Western Australia. Inclusion WA is now planning a program of activities for the April school holidays.

Some youngsters from Embracing Children collect supplies for their recycled art project from Snap Pilbara.

Karratha toddlers from Embracing Children’s family day care paid visits to shops around town last week to learn more about recycling. The toddlers dropped by local businesses, such as printing company Snap Pilbara, to see how companies dispose of recyclable paper and cardboard. They also then took away leftover paper and cardboard, which they will use to create artworks back at Embracing Children’s junior education centre in Baynton West. Children also asked their parents to donate boxes and paper for the artworks. With all Embracing Children’s charges, ranging from toddlers up to after-school care kids, working on recycled artworks, all that remains to be seen is what kind of cool pieces they can come up with.

The Pilbara Multicultural Association (PMA) event held at St Luke’s College included Chinese food stalls, dumpling-making workshops, face painting and colouring in and even a stall where people could have their names written out in Chinese characters. Later, four ladies from the Perth-based Chung Wah Dance Company took to the stage to perform traditional peacock and lantern dances. A team from Perth’s Yarn Yee Tong kung fu academy then performed feats of strength and skill with Chinese spears and swords. But, according to PMA president Judy Wright, the traditional lions that chased and played with the children were extra special. “The look of horror that turned to joy on the kids’ faces when the lions came out was awesome – they were everybody’s favourites,” Judy said.

“We’ve never done a Chinese New Year event before, and it turned out to be one of the most awesome and biggest nights we’ve had.” “Thanks to our sponsors, we were able to bring up great performers from Perth.” Judy said organisers also honoured the Chinese tradition of handing out red New Year’s gift envelopes to children. “We gave out red envelopes with money in them to the kids … chocolate money, that is,” she said. Judy said PMA organisers had worked hard to organise the event, especially as it coincided with school holidays.

She also said that it was held after the official end of the 15-day Chinese New Year period because the Perth performers had been tied up with other engagements. However, there is no rest for the PMA, as their next event takes place on March 8 at the Frank Butler centre to celebrate International Women’s Day. The Women’s Day celebration begins at 6pm and a highlight is the food that is on offer, with everyone encouraged to cook a traditional meal from their home countries and bring it along to share. To find out more about all their latest events, visit the Pilbara Multicultural Association Facebook page.

Evos to celebrate fourth birthday

• All photos by CB Snapz

“Karratha people can party!” was the verdict from Perth muso DJ Saccas after he pulled two allnighters performing at Evolution Lounge Bar last weekend.

DJ Saccas was playing in Karratha with DJ T’Dodge for the Beyond Tha Noise Tour. And with the Perth DJs having a combined 20 years experience on the decks and 15 years as producers under their belts, they knew exactly how to keep the Evos dancefloor pumping until the

early hours of Friday and Saturday mornings. And for keen partiers, there is more excitement coming up as Evolution Lounge Bar celebrates its fourth birthday on March 14 and 15. Resident DJ Armee will be spinning the decks for the Evos birthday gig with local DJ Lifu joining him for a firsttime appearance at the club. So to help the club celebrate, all K-Town partiers are welcome to come down and gain free entry before 11pm on Saturday night all you have to do is private message the club on its Facebook page.

It takes both fitness and food to cut your belly fat. You can’t have one without the other, and it is only when your diet and fitness regimes are in sync that you can reach all of your health goals.

Are you struggling to cut fat from your wobbly belly or fix your bloated tummy? These are among men and women’s most common complaints and seem to throw peoples’ positive body images out the window. And let’s start by debunking a myth – don’t believe all those abdominal crunching commercials. It is complete rubbish when they say: “You only need to spend two minutes on this Ab King Pro each day to get a six pack like this”. You could spend half your day on those machines, but if your diet isn’t right, you will not get the results. Modern research has shown us that weightloss is a whopping 80 per cent diet and 20 per cent fitness-related. Yet we seem to throw the most money at expensive gym memberships and fitness gadgets rather than paying close attention to what we consume on a daily basis. It takes both fitness and food to cut your belly fat. You can’t have one without the other, and it is only when your diet and fitness regimes are in sync that you can reach all of your health goals. So if you are finding that your belly is staying put even after you pound the treadmill week after week, try out these tips to see if they are the triggers to removing that stubborn fat or bloating.

9185 5600 aBs are made in the Kitchen Bloated Belly, especially later in the day? Chew your food! Many of us don’t have a lunch break, or we eat on the run and while working. You are paying no attention to the way you are eating, and more than likely biting, chewing twice and swallowing. The lack of chewing and air swallowed while eating quickly increases the gases in your stomach, leading to instant bloating. On average you need to chew around 20 times, or until it resembles baby food. avoid fluid with meals I know, it’s a habit for many of us to make a meal and pour a drink, but this is not serving your body well. Fluid during and immediately after mealtime dilutes your digestive juices, which need to stay concentrated to be able to break down food particles. Avoid drinking 30 minutes either side of eating. KicK the sugar and sweetener haBit Sugar and refined carbs are major players in the diabetes and obesity epidemic plaguing Western nations. When sugars are consumed, insulin is released to aid in getting the sugar into the cell. But a side affect of insulin is that it leads to fat storage, especially around the tummy. Insulin also inhibits that fat from being burnt off and used as a fuel, so it’s a double whammy.

If you are a sugar addict the best thing you can do is go cold turkey. Read food labels to avoid hidden sugar as it is everywhere. add a little Bit of acidity to every meal When the sour flavour hits your tongue, it stimulates your digestive juices (saliva, hydrochloric acid), which then help to break food down more efficiently, reducing bloating. Try making dressings with lime, lemon or apple cider vinegar. In extreme cases, one teaspoon of good quality apple cider vinegar about 20 minutes before main meals can be a fantastic digestive aide. possiBle food intolerances Dairy, gluten and soy are problematic for many people and lead to widespread inflammation, digestive issues, bloating, trouble shifting weight and more. Keep a food diary to assess just how much of these foods you are really consuming, and from there trial an elimination diet for at least four to six weeks. increase your fat Burning capaBilities Include chilli, ginger, garlic, green tea, coconut oil, fermented foods and a predominately plant-based diet – ensure each meal is at least 50 per cent vegetables – to naturally increase fat burning.

Many people don’t realize that they have options to stay in Australia – often as a permanent resident.

• • • • • • •

Being a migrant myself, I understand the difficulties involved in moving to a new country. I have been living and working in WA as an Australian registered migration agent for over 10 years and have assisted several thousand people to obtain temporary and permanent residence visas. My commitment to you is that I will give you a clear assessment of your visa options and whether you have a good chance of success. If I don’t think your application will succeed I will tell you this up-front. My firm specializes in Permanent Residence visas such as Employer Nomination (186), Regional Sponsored Migration (187), General Skilled (189/190) as well as Temporary work (457) and Partner Visas. O’Neil leads early bird triathletes across the line Karratha triathletes were up with the sparrows last weekend as they headed out from the Dampier Palms at 6am for the start of race four of the Nickol Bay Triathlon Club series.

Mark Smith leaves the water in a 2013 club race.

Organisers had planned the early start so that the swim leg coincided with favourable tides but it didn’t put off a bunch of new club members from showing up for their first race ever. Among those newer competitors, it was Donnay Walsh who led the way, being the first female home over the

shortest distance, known as the Enticer course, ahead of Rod White. Peter O’Neil also thrived in the cooler conditions to beat home Nathan Hughes by just under 50 seconds in the long-course distance, in which competitors race over a 600m swim, 18km cycle and 6km run. Gail Greensill was the first woman home on in the longcourse race, two mintues ahead of Stacey Taranto. Nick Muller made up almost two minutes lost in the swim

leg to narrowly beat Alex Gunn in the short course, raced over a 400m swim, 12km ride and 3km run. Holly Vernon was the first female across the line ahead of Gillian Simpson. In the Under-12s juniors, Blair Stedman was the first across the line, with Nathaniel Greensill close behind in second. All competitors counted their blessings that the temperature remained relatively cool until after the final athletes completed their run legs.

Race organisers would also like to remind competitors that signin starts 45 minutes and finishes 15 minutes before the race to ensure events start on time. Competitors are encouraged to register online before race day by visiting nickolbaytriclub.com/ become-a-member. Nex up, race five is on March 9 and it will again start at 6am due to the tides at Dampier. Organisers also hope to return to the normal bike leg route next event after roadworks forced them to run an altered route.

Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report By Jenni Gates The excitement is building for two major tournaments coming up at Exmouth Game Fishing Club. The Australian International Billfish Tournament is a tag-and-release event run over three days from March 10-12. There have been some incredible catches lately, including the pending state and Australian record blue marlin that was caught by Rowan Smith on Reel Teaser last week. At 368.2kg it is now the largest marlin caught in Western Australia. The fish was fully filleted and given out to many people in Exmouth. Interestingly, in the recent past a few big blue marlin this size have washed up on the beaches in Albany. Sadly, these fish have had to be dumped as the flesh had rotted, and it is believed they have died from natural causes. Another awesome billfish catch was

that of a broadbill swordfish caught onboard Mahi Mahi III last week. This fish weighed 63.9kg and is another pending record. Not many people have caught these deep-sea fish and skipper Bernie Vale, who has won top tagging captain in the Indian Ocean several times through the Billfish Foundation, is stoked to add this species to his own records. Meanwhile on the wide open seas, anglers chasing billfish have been getting into yellowfin tuna and mahi mahi, which is even more exciting for anglers chasing these species in the Gamex tournament, which runs from March 15-22. These two major events are sure to gain plenty of attention this year, given that we are already getting such good results of billfish being tagged and various other species being encountered.

On the shorefront, we have had schools of predatory fish coming to the marina this last week. If you’re keen enough to walk the distance out to the end of the rock wall at the entrance to the harbour, you could be rewarded with some great fish and amazing visual activity. There have been schools of trevally and queenfish hammering bait close to the walls. Plus the schools of long-tail and mack tuna have been within casting range at times. The tuna are responding well to the Arma chisel 30g lures, while the trevally and queenfish have been responding well to poppers and soft plastics. It can be very exhilarating when the fish boil on the surface as they go in to a feeding frenzy, but it can also be frustrating if you miss the bite!

Pirates going for number seven By Bob Neville The Pirates sailed into th Hedland baseball grand final with a convincing win over the Sharks, setting up a three-game series against league-leaders the Swans from on March 5. Christian Wise carved out the win for the Pirates, striking out no less than 13 Sharks batters in just six innings and conceding three hits in the 16 runs to one mercy-rule win. Both sides fielded understrength teams, but the Pirates’ hitting made a huge difference as they pounded out 15 safe hits and scored eight times in the second innings. Nick Kennedy led the Pirates hitting spree with a triple, double and single from four at bats to drive in four runners. The result puts the Pirates in

line for their seventh successive premiership, having won the big prize every year since 2007. But this year’s opponents the Swans will not be pushovers. They will be pulling out all the stops to break their 22-year drought, having last put their name on the trophy in 1992. Last weekend also featured the Association Awards presentation, with the Swans’ Kyle Edwards taking home the major prize of the night, voted the competition’s fairest and best player. The Pirates’ Kevin Charles was runner-up and also picked up the Batting and Earned Run Average trophies. Ray Wasley and Ronnie Budd shared the Runs Batted In trophy with 13 apiece, while Ashliegh Christensen topped stolen bases with nine.

The Home Run award saw Charles, Ash Christensen, Nathan Nordmann and Andre Chapman tie it up with two apiece. The Sharks’ Darren Derschow was judged to be the Most Valuable Player by the umpires. The Swans’ Kane Edwards also added to the Edwards family spoils by taking out the Junior of the Year. Teammate Kurt Ballantyne was judged best under-21 player, while Daniel Page from the Sharks won the Rookie award and the Brewers’ Kieran Deall collected the Best First Year Player prize. Game One of the grand final series is on Wednesday, March 5, at 7.30pm. Game two takes place on Saturday, March 8, at 7.30pm, with the reserves grand final at 3.30pm.

Hedland juniors set to join footy league By Ben Leahy Footy is almost back for Karratha’s junior footy players, with the West Pilbara Junior Football League set to hold its annual general meeting and registration day on March 9 at the Leisureplex. The AGM will give parents the chance to nominate for roles on the WPJFL committee. But it will also enable them to learn more about exciting changes to the league this year, such as the expected inclusion of a new Hedland side and the awarding of bonus points to teams that show good sportsmanship. It is hoped the Hedland Reds will enter a new team into the WPJFL 17s competition this year. Last year, the Reds entered a team in the WPJFL’s 8/9s competition and they proved to be a powerhouse, helping to raise the standard of footy right across the competition. Along with players travelling from Tom Price to take part in league games last year, the increase in players from

across the Pilbara proved a great source of motivation to existing players and coaches, according to talent manager Clint Degebrodt. Mr Degebrodt from the V Swans development team said the increased standard of WPJFL play has helped inspire local players to learn new skills, drills and game strategy and push each other to make it into elite representative teams. Another change in the WPFJL this year is aimed at rewarding teams that show good sportsmanship Throughout the year, junior teams will receive an extra premiership point for each game in which none of their players get a red or yellow card. Consequently, teams with good sportsmanship will receive five points for a win and one point for a loss, as opposed of four points for a win and none for a loss for teams who are red or yellow-carded. That gives teams the chance to pick up an extra 15 points over the course of the 15-round season.

Another focus in the WPJFL this year is getting more family and friends of players involved in the clubs. This includes signing more parents, brothers, sisters, and cousins to take coaching and umpiring accreditation courses. Under WPJFL by-laws, only people who have achieved a Level 1 AFL coaching qualification can coach junior teams. Each junior team is also required to contribute umpires to help out during the season. As well as parents, several junior players have taken umpiring training in the past and have been able to turn it into handy pocket money when they are paid to umpire senior footy matches. The WPJFL meeting next weekend will also seek to fill committee positions from league president and umpires coordinator to tribunal chair. The WPJFL AGM and registration day will be held at the Karratha Leisureplex on March 9 at noon.

The West Pilbara Junior Football league is hoping to welcome new players – and a whole new team – this season.
