Ant, a man on a mission The Pilbara Echo have been busy this week training Anthony Middlemiss from Gippsland, Victoria, preparing him for his new career venture. Anthony recently landed himself in a new job as a production/ graphic designer for a spanking new local paper due to launch in Victoria soon. Anthony gained his Diploma of Graphic Design and developed his portfolio through previous jobs, but had never worked in newspaper design. As Anthony’s new boss is a close friend of Alan Richardson’s (Pilbara Echo owner) he was sent all the way to the Pilbara to learn from the masters of the trade. And what a week to arrive on! “Arriving on Monday I had barely been in Karratha a few hours before the unexpected tornado hit,” Anthony said.

• Anthony learning Echo’s trade secrets “Little was I aware Cyclone Carlos was heading our way and we would spend the next day in lock down, a trip I’ll never forget.” Pilbara Echo’s Graphic Designer Guru; Kane Tenadii-Hay has since spent the week teaching Anthony the basics of pre-press desktop publishing. Anthony said he’s really enjoyed his time in Karratha but has quickly come to realise that this industry never sleeps and caffeine

will soon become an essential aspect in his career. “I was able to learn a great deal whilst in Karratha, making the most of the experience and I really can’t wait to take it all back with me so I can show others and pass on all of Pilbara Echo’s knowledge,” he said. “I would like to thank all the team at Pilbara Echo for making my time here a week I’ll never forget.”

Regional McDonalds licensees donate to the Carnarvon ﬂoods

Ten regional McDonald licensees from WA recently donated $10,000 towards the Lord Mayors’ Distress Relief Fund in Carnarvon, including the Karratha franchise. The licensees from around the State were due to present the donation to the flood relief fund at ‘The Big Event’ due to be held in Carnarvon on 19 February, but unfortunately the event had to be cancelled due to the recent cyclone warning. The Big Event had been organised to raise money

for the flood relief and was set to see the Perth Glory A League soccer team play at the Festival Grounds as well as other entertainment. Although Carnarvon doesn’t have a McDonalds restaurant, this hasn’t stopped the other ten licensees from helping out. At the event, as well as presenting the donation, the McDonalds licensees planned to supply food, with the help of their suppliers, for the predicted 2000 guests but instead they are now planning to distribute it within the

community as needed. The Karratha based McDonalds restaurant, owned and operated by Clayton McIntosh, managed to donate $3,300 of the total funds towards the flood relief. They raised the money by placing donation buckets on counters as well as promotional material in the store. Mr McIntosh and the staff at the Karratha franchise were very passionate about the fundraiser and hope their efforts bring some

joy to the community in Carnarvon. “The reason we decided to include ourselves in the donation was because we feel we have to look after our sister town Carnarvon,” he said.

“As these recent tragedies have happened all over Australia, each state have really looked after their own state. “I know the floods in Carnarvon weren’t as big as the floods in Queensland but we still need to look out for our own.”

Protection once again opened the Pilbara TAFE Campus as an emergency shelter on the Monday night.

when she received a call about the damage to her house. “We raced home to find cars and flashing lights outside our house, all I could do was cry as people told me I could not go find my dogs because the powerlines were all over our front yard and house, but luckily they were fine” she said. “Everyone that came to help was amazing, they left their own homes on yellow alert to help us try and clean the mess and save my Dad's belongings from his wrecked caravan before the cyclone hit. Family, friends, and faces I did not even recognise were all helping.” At least nine commercial properties including All Seasons Hotel, Woolworths and the Karratha Vet building sustained significant damage. The Karratha Aquatic Centre was severely damaged during the tornado and has been closed for at least four weeks. Over 1600 houses lost power for a period of time, mainly in the areas of Bulgarra due to damaged power lines. FESA’s State Emergency (SES) volunteers worked hard to help people who had been effected and quickly made temporary repairs around town before the cyclone was expected to hit. The Department for Child

Residents of Karratha are in a state of shock after a mini tornado hit the town on Monday 21 February at around 3.15pm. Although the tornado was short lived the damage was extensive. Over 38 houses were damaged including numerous cars, buildings and schools. Out of the 38 houses, 22 sustained significant damage and 15 had varying degrees of roof, window and patio damage. Residents in Padbury Way and Wellard Way were worst hit by the tornado. A property in Bulgarra, owned by residents Kylie Boylan and partner Jason Scott, suffered remarkable damage as well as their car and her father’s caravan. The caravan her father lived in was thrown into the house by the wind’s force and destroyed. Her partner’s work vehicle was rolled over causing damage to the windows and panels and their back yard sustained damage to the clothes line, old pool structure, satellite dish and fences. Fortunately for Kylie and her family the caravan was insured, however the work vehicles’ insurance had only recently expired. Kylie, who owns the Lenards Chicken franchise in the Karratha Centro was working at the time

Pilbara Play Day is coming soon Children around town are soon to get excited as the Karratha Community House (KCH) Pilbara Play Day approaches again - an event not to be missed. The annual event that sees hundreds of families attend, celebrates National Playgoup Week and will be held on 24 March 2011 between 9am and 12pm at the Karratha Entertainment Centre (KEC). The Pilbara Play Day celebrates the supportive role and vital connections that playgroups create for the families of the Pilbara. Local trainees set to build great futures As the New Year starts, it’s business as usual for 2nd Year Construction trainees, Jarrod Mourambine and Brendon Jones, at Pilbara TAFE’s Roebourne Campus. Lecturer Tom Hay explains the pair has been on the tools for the past year, learning various skills in the workshop such as how to cut and weld, operate small plant equipment, lay concrete pads and measure materials. “The lads have been driving the forklifts out at the Mingullatharndo community, getting the rodeo grounds cleaned up and erecting new cattle sheds from scratch,” says Tom. “You can’t fault their enthusiasm and willingness to take on each task, and the end results show how far they’ve come in a year!” Both Jarrod and Brendon achieved their traineeships through the Warrgamugardi Yirdiyabura Pathways to Employment program, which is sponsored by Woodside and managed by the Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi Foundation. For Jarrod, the program has been a great opportunity to learn a range of new skills and use different equipment in a workshop environment. “I

The Aston Shuﬄe in Karratha By Courtney Bertling Even though The Aston Shuffle come from the opposite side of the country, on Saturday, February 19 they were no strangers to a crowd of people at the Karratha Tavern. The night started off with local DJ’s Panda (Brenton Cartledge) and Fl3ggless (Luke Flegeltaub), who both said the night was a great success. “Four years ago when I just started out DJing I never thought I would be performing with Aston Shuffle, I always thought it was just going to be a bedroom hobby,” said Cartledge. “I think the crowd really appreciate the music that we all play and it was really obvious with how nuts everyone was going, it was awesome!” DJ Fl3ggless has played with Aston Shuffle before back in 2007 in one of Sydney’s nightclubs. He said the pair have definitely grown as musicians. “They are more accomplished and are making more of their own music,” he said. “Last Saturday night was probably one of the best nights of house electro music that Karratha has ever had.” DJ Electric Button aka Frankie Button

said the show was a lot of fun to perform with Aston Shuffle. “And the support the crowd gave to local DJ’s Panda and Fl3ggless was great,” he said. “It is really obvious that Aston Shuffle was voted as the number one DJ’s in Australia. “The crowd was going off and even I was dancing on the sidelines and getting into the music the guys were playing. “I’m not surprised at all how the people reacted to the guys because they are awesome and I knew everyone would absolutely love them. “If anyone wants to listen to Aston Shuffle more then tune onto radio station Triple J every Friday afternoon, they do their own DJ mixes.” “Karratha definitely needs this sort of entertainment, now with all these talented DJ’s coming to the town, the night scene isn’t boring,” Flegeltaub said. Roebourne Vistor Centre undergoes makeover The Roebourne Visitor Centre have recently upgraded their centre with funds they were granted, through the Royalties for Regions. After applying in February 2010, the centre based at the old Roebourne Gaol was granted $38,000 to upgrade their facilities in February 2011. With the money they were granted they have since bought a new plazma television, promotional DVD's about the Pilbara region, new seating, a coffee machine and two coin operated washing machines. Although the purchase of a washing machine is not normally expected in a tourist centre, General Manager Ruth thinks they will be hugely successful due to the lack of facilities in the area. “Dampier Transit Park is the only carpark in the

area, which has a facility for a laundry mat,” she said. “There has been a big need as a lot of tourists stay at Cleverville, and the overflow area at the Country Club in Karratha and both have no washing facilities. “I think once word gets out, the machines will be appreciated and used well. “As people are doing their washing, there is lots to see at the Museum. “The machines will also bring extra funds into the centre to maintain the buildings.”

After closing in 1924 the Gaol was refurbished and reopened as a prison in 1985 till 1984. All prisoners were relocated to the new Regional Roebourne Prison.

In 1884 the Roebourne lock up was proclaimed a Gaol. Later closing in 1984, the Gaol became home to the Roebourne Visitor Centre and Museum and the Roebourne Arts and Craft Group. During the peak season, almost 100 people will visit the centre a day.

30 years celebrated of Karratha’s Arts and Learning Centre The Karratha Arts and Learning Centre (KALC) celebrated the 30th anniversary of the opening of the building in Richardson Way with a celebratory evening and exhibition of past and current members art and craft works on 18 February. In a small window of local good weather, a large crowd turned out to view the excellent display of beautiful items, gathered from all over Karratha. A large part of the displayed work was produced by current members of the many and various groups at the KALC, who meet to support and encourage participants in their artistic pursuits. The display also showcased a collection of artworks from the late 70's and 80's, pieces from excellent workshops run by high profile artists at the

KALC and artworks from the 90's, donated to the exhibition from Tambrey Primary School. Many pieces from former members and from children who attended classes were also on display as well as an extensive photo collection dating from 1978 to 2011, which proved to be a real highlight. The crowd was entertained by the wonderful Red Earth Choir who performed on the Friday night, and were thoroughly enjoyed by all. There were also some surprises, as Gina Hipworth was presented belatedly with her 2002 Life Membership and Robyn Rayson surprised with a new Life Membership for KALC. The Pilbara Community Quilt, borrowed back from the Community Library for the event, was also

on display and provoked much interest from all who viewed it. It was initiated by ladies who were members of KALC in 2000 who encouraged locals and tourists alike to make a small quilt block, decorated with something meaningful to them. The 156 blocks subsequently gathered were then pieced together and layered to form the large quilt at KALC

It is a wonderful snapshot of people who were residents in the Shire of Roebourne at that time. Many have now left the area, but many remain and enjoyed finding their block again on the quilt. The exhibition remained open over the weekend, with a steady stream of locals taking time to view and enjoy it.

TRON: LEGACY By Kane Tenadii-Hay Firstly, I’d like to make an open apology to all of my fans for my lack of a weekly review for the past eleven months. However, all three of you will be very excited to hear that I have decidedly resumed my scathing, unprofessional reviews until I get bored again, starting with the sci-fi blockbuster Tron: Legacy. I’m in no place to summarize the original movie, let alone compare it to its successor, as even as a child I found the effects so painfully unbelievable that I never watched it through hence, the reason I bothered with Legacy at all was not because of some kind of unjust nostalgia. Instead, I was drawn in my the visuals, and that brings me effortlessly to the first thing I have to say about Tron: Legacy: it looks fantastic. While the film’s appearance, for the most part, strictly abides by the distinctive blue and clashing orange, the use of dizzying lighting and monstrous set pieces really makes this a fine

example of millions of dollars being beautifully blown away at a movie. But the flashing lights and over-the-top fight sequences can only distract you for so long until you’re immersed enough to not be fazed by them, and it’s about this time when you begin to notice how dull the movie manages to be, which brings me onto the painfully uninspired plot. Our protagonist is a childish twenty-somethingyear-old Sam Flynn whose father, being the protagonist of the previous film, disappeared on him as a child. Shockingly, this turns him into a rebellious little brat who treats his position about as seriously as I am treating this synopsis, like every movie ever made in which a father deserts his son. However, a close friend of his father’s comes to Sam with a page (you know, one of those electronic messages from the 1800’s) from his dad’s old, abandoned amusement arcade. After a dose of angsty, arbitrary reluctance, he decides to visit it, stumbles upon the entrance to his

father’s secret office, and accidentally injects himself into the Grid - that pretty, expensive place I was telling you about before. Inside, the digital world is in turmoil under the rule of Clu - an alter ego of Sam’s father, Kevin. Clu is attempting, with some success, to scrub out a great number of programs while seeking out the final ISO - a program that came to exist from nothing, which Kevin valiantly believes carries the answer to the nature of existence and creation, plus a bunch of less fun things like medical science and so on. It sounds complicated, but the movie is pretty easy to follow for the most part - it’s that special kind of ridiculous that has you develop an urge to ruffle the characters’ hair, congratulate them for sounding intelligent, then send them to their bedroom to sleep the pretentiousness off. Jokes aside, though, the plot is a little bit of a mess, and it doesn’t help that the protagonist just isn’t very likable - it’s obvious what they were going for (a

painfully un-badass badass), but it falls flat thanks to a lacklustre performance. It’s even hard to take the father seriously - not so much because of how the character was written, but any time you see his naturally aged face, it makes looking at Clu (who was played by the same actor with CGI feebly attempting to turn the biological clock back) all the more ridiculous to see. If you haven’t figured it out already, I’m not that crazy about Tron: Legacy - it just doesn’t feel nearly epic enough to justify the extravagance of the setting; the soundtrack feels like a diluted version of Vangelis’ brilliant Blade Runner score; and the protagonist is a pain. Despite all this, it’s a ride worthy of your time if you don’t need to go out of your way to see it, and I would imagine that before reading this you would have already decided if you were going to see the film. Don’t let me change your mind - you probably won’t be disappointed, but you won’t be that wowed, either. ★★☆☆☆

On 18 February, Rio Tinto celebrated its partnership with the Pilbara Health Network through a $130,000 agreement to support Wickham Medical Centre GP services in Wickham. The agreement, which commenced in October 2010, has provided the Pilbara Health Network with funds to deliver GP services in Wickham. Rio Tinto general manager Coastal Operations Mike Spreadborough said the partnership has given the people of Wickham access to medical services following the announcement in October that the long-term provider was withdrawing. “While we are yet to secure the services of a dedicated doctor to Wickham, by working with the Pilbara Health Network we have been able to provide a locum to conduct the work,” Mr Spreadborough said. “We hope to secure the services of a permanent GP soon and, while it is a difficult task with a nationwide shortage, we do understand it is important for the local community.” Pilbara Health Network CEO Chris Pickett said without Rio Tinto’s support they would not have been able to provide locals with medical services in the last six months. “It’s great Rio Tinto supports the future development of the

This pretty Australian native parrot is one of the most popular house pets and is easily recognisable by its pink and grey plumage. Overseas they are known as the rose breasted cockatoo. I don’t think there is anything prettier than seeing a flock on the wing going from pink to grey as they change direction. They are strong, fast flyers reaching up to 50km hour and travelling distances up to 15 kilometres to feed. Like most parrots, Galahs are seed eaters and they feed on the ground. They were culled in large numbers in the wheat belt areas for destroying crops. One fact about these birds I was un-aware of till recently owning my own

Through the program International Cultural Youth Exchange, SAFE has acquired a full time volunteer from Denmark. Amelia specifically requested animal rescue as her volunteer program of choice and wasted no time getting into the swing of things at SAFE headquarters. Her passion for animal welfare, confidence and outgoing personality made

her ideal for the position. Amalie is keen to experience as much of the Pilbara life as she possibly can while here as well as travel to some of the locals’ favourite getaways, like Broome and Exmouth. Playing for pink By Norma Bilsborough Rain is always welcome in the Pilbara but it does complicate the life of the golfer. Karratha Golf course was renamed “The Lakes” last week as several holes developed some new water features. The grass is growing quickly, making the rough even rougher and a record number of balls were lost in this weekend’s competition. The Shire of Roebourne must be congratulated for their sterling efforts this week to mow the fairways after the rain, enabling last week’s Stableford competition to go ahead as normal. Karratha Physiotherapy, Pilbara Chiropractors and Refund Home Loans sponsored last week’s event, introducing an extra frisson of excitement with a team Pink Panther comp running alongside the normal Stableford. Each 3-ball had a pink ball which was played by each member for three of the nine holes.

A second score card was kept where the score of the pink ball and the best of the other two were recorded. Sixty eight golfers swarmed over the course for the shot gun start at 2.30pm. In the novelty prizes the nearest the pin prizes were won by Gary Wieland on hole 3, Norma Bilsborough on hole 8, Rab Abbott on hole 11 and Rob Hinchcliffe on hole 16. The longest putt was Andrea Maddaford on hole 2 and Gary Breedon on hole 17. Best 3rd shot was Shaun Uys on hole 4, Dave McLaren on hole 12 and Bodie Broun on hole 14, who also had the longest drive on hole 13. Longest drive on hole 9 was Mark Smyth. Best Lady overall was Gina Hipworth with 22 and the best visitor was Brian Goldsbury with 17. Outright first place on the day was John Filgate with an outstanding 23 points. On the front 9, Bill Saw

On the back 9, Gina Hipworth was first with 22, Wayne Martin was 2nd with 21 points, and Owen Leece was 3rd with 19. The Pink Panther Team event was won by Darren Beier, Mick Maddaford, and Wayne Chadwick with a score of 39. Charchy Sacma, Brian Goldsbury and Carl Kleynhans came home with a phenomenal 43 but were ineligible for a prize as Brian was playing with a provisional handicap. Another great golfing day thanks to the organisers for the smooth running of the competition, the Shire of Roebourne for doing such a good job on keeping

Karratha Netball Association on the hunt for a squad Karratha Netball Association (KNA) has for many years identified junior local girls who show ‘talent, ability and dedication’ to netball to receive specialist coaching. Trials are undertaken and a Karratha Association Development Squad (KADS) will be chosen to compete in the Senior competition on Monday nights commencing 9th May 2011.

Karratha riders to compete at State championships By Nick Muller • Riders are set for the State Championship in Perth

After months of training, 22 riders from the Karratha BMX Club will travel to Perth at the beginning of March to compete in the 2011 BMX State Championships. The season may have finished last November but this group of dedicated riders have been training several times a week to ensure that they are at their best for the States. The training sessions have varied with sprints along roads, portable gates being used in the new Baynton sub division and some track time. The weather has hindered training with the rain making it impossible to ride on the track some weeks. The 2011 BMX State titles will be held at the Westside BMX Club in Balcatta over the weekend of the 5th and 6th of March. Karratha riders will be able to ride the track during pre State competitions in the week leading up to the main event, and will also have a couple of practice sessions that will give them a chance to get a feel for the track. After the riders return from

Perth, the Karratha BMX Club will have a couple of weeks to get the track ready for the start of the season. Depending on the condition of the track in the next few weeks, the BMX season will get underway with a fun night on the 25th of March and a “come and try” day on the 27th of March. Dates have been set for these events but they may change if the rain continues. Further information will be available on these events closer to the time; checkout the Club website karratha.bmxa.com.au for the latest news. The “come and try” day is an opportunity for anyone who would like to see what BMX is all about, to come down and have a ride on the track. The track will be open to the public, although you will need to register on the day and ensure that you have the right safety gear.
