what’snot • Reversing out of car parks Sometimes you watch these people who reverse and cringe at how close they come to crashing because they don’t look. Most people will let you out, but if they don’t see you, you’ll be the one who unfortunately has to pay for it. • Flat tyres We’re not quite sure what these people are doing in the Karratha Centro car park but it’s highly annoying having to drive around in circles trying to find a parking spot that isn’t covered in broken glass.

Pilbara Echo welcomes Bella The Pilbara Echo would like to welcome our spankin’ new Sales Representative; Bella Gray. Bella, born and raised in Luton in the UK, gained a degree in Marketing at Newcastle University and bagged herself a job as an Online Marketing Executive. After much debate, Bella and her partner left their jobs, packed up and headed for New Zealand where they stayed for seven months. In search of warmer waters they soon came to Australia to travel, eventually stopping over in Port Hedland for a quick visit. That quick visit became weeks, and the weeks soon became five months. “We just loved the Pilbara so much, we didn’t want to leave so we’ve ended up settling in Karratha” Bella said. “We love the strong community feel here in the Pilbara, everyone is really welcoming and makes you feel like part of the family!” Although Bella has only been in Karratha for six weeks, she has already experienced two cyclones and one tornado, which needless to say came as quite a shock to the system. Bella is looking forward to

Residents are reminded to be cyclone ready • The Shire of Roebourne clean up Padbury Way Last week’s tornado which caused widespread damage to Karratha has served as a reminder for local residents to be prepared for any future cyclones. Shire of Roebourne President Nicole Lockwood said that even though there is only two months remaining in what has already been an active cyclone season, residents should still be aware and prepared. The Bureau of Meteorology located a tropical low early in the week but it was predicted
that it wouldn’t reach cyclone intensity and has since dropped. “The extent of damage to homes and businesses caused by last week’s tornado has reminded us exactly what we are preparing for during cyclone season. “The winds, which tore roofs from homes and businesses, were believed to have exceeded 240kmh and this is the equivalent of a Category 4 tropical cyclone.” Cr Lockwood said a number of the residents
directly affected by the tornado attended an information session on the Friday afternoon at Shire offices. “The session was organised for these people to speak with representatives from key organisations responding to the tornado including FESA, SES, Horizon Power, Department for Child Protection and the Shire,” she said. “The feedback from this session has been overwhelmingly positive with a number of affected residents coming along to

The Pilbara Poet by Elise Batchelor
According to modern pop culture, thirty is the new forty. Who needs a midlife crisis anyway, when you can have a soft top convertible, a wild career change or your whole head botoxed into cryogenically frozen oblivion (why Nicole? Why oh why?) But here, today, I offer the simple solution if you’re thinking about turning thirty something (and a bit) anytime soon.
The Red One
• The Whale Sculpture.
Point Samson whale sculpture vandalised Residents of Point Samson have been very disappointed to find that their sculpture of the Humpback Whale and calf has been vandalised. The whale sculpture that sits opposite the Community Hall on the road to Point Samson has had the initials ‘O.L and A.C 2011’ scratched into it.
past two weeks. This act of vandalism has deeply upset the community within Point Samson as they designed and sourced the artist themselves and arranged for the delivery of the sculpture to Point Samson. The police have been notified, but if you know anything about the incident or markings please contact Wickham Police on 9187 1444.
I want the red one, thanks, ‘cause it goes faster. It may well make a mess, cause a disaster, but with my fine tuned skills I’ll be the master and take the chance on ending up in plaster.
wanting the red one, yes, it’s superstition. But if I think of pink I feel the scission which tears my heart in two with fine precision and even black or white cause deep derision.
Don’t want the blue one, no, it’s not the same. It may well sink, not swim when in the rain and blue, well, it’s for boys, (I know that’s lame), But, oh, I love the red - it’s like a flame.
And so HE trots off to the special place where all the red ones sit and wait with grace. Oh how I just can’t wait to set the pace. All whirr and whizz bang biz! It will be ace.
I’ll polish it each day for best protection and when I gaze at it, there’s my reflection and I will smile at me, need no correction, for choosing red is just my predilection.
As he returns no sign of shiny toy and he bemoans, ‘Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy.’ My heart it caves, implodes and out seeps joy until I rea-lise it’s a decoy.
‘I’m only joking!’ he beams, just as I spy my bright red mixmaster from my left eye. ‘Oh happy day! Thank you! I may well cry!’ ‘How ‘bout instead, my love, bake lemon pie.’
I’ll keep it shiny clean and housed inside. It will have pride of place and we will ride. The fastest gears it hits; oh no, don’t chide. This girl is superkeen and cannot hide
He holds a whisk and asks, ‘Will this thing do?’ I stare dumfounded asking, ‘Would it you?’ He ponders, squinting, what oh what to do? And then I know I shouldn’t feel so blue.
So turning forty was not really hard. Not that I am, but were I, I would star. For if you’re going to do the crisis BLAH, then get the RED one and it will take you far!

International Women’s Day has been observed since the early 1900’s, a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialised world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies. Students to be offered free breakfast BUSINESS Thousands of students in regional and remote areas will soon be offered a free breakfast before the start of the school day in a major expansion of the Foodbank School Breakfast Program. Premier Colin Barnett said that the healthy and nutritious breakfasts served to about 34,000 students each week in low socio-economic areas, would soon be expanded to include more regional and remote schools across the state. Premier Colin Barnett, Education Minister Liz Constable and Regional Development Minister
Brendon Grylls said the program will see $78,000 worth of State Government Royalties for Regions funding injected into it over a four year period. This funding will be matched by the Department of Education, which will support Foodbank and schools to roll out the program. The Department of Health will also contribute $1.45million towards the project, taking the State Government’s contribution to more than $3million. “The health and educational benefits of a healthy breakfast are well documented and it
is hoped the expansion of this program will help improve school attendance, behaviour and educational achievement,” Dr Constable said. “The additional funding will see the program expanded to schools in the South-West, Wheatbelt, Mid-West, Goldfields, Pilbara and Kimberley regions.” Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said regional and remote areas faced unique challenges in accessing healthy, affordable and good quality food. “Foodbank has proven itself to be skilled in

sourcing healthy food cheaply, and effectively transporting it to regional and remote areas,” Mr Grylls said. “Any improvement to country children’s health and education status is well worth supporting.”
North West Australia to be aware of mosquito-borne Kunjin virus The Department of Health have advised people living and holidaying in the Kimberley, Pilbara, Gascoyne and Murchison regions of Western Australia to avoid mosquito bites, following the detection of the mosquitoborne Kunjin virus. Department of Health Medical Entomologist Sue Harrington said that the mosquito and virus surveillance program (undertaken by The University of Western Australia) had detected Kunjin virus in the Kimberley in recent weeks, and preliminary data indicated that the virus was also now active in the Pilbara region. "Recent heavy rainfall has resulted in large areas of standing water and the potential for mosquito breeding in many areas of the Kimberley, Pilbara, Gascoyne and Murchison regions. Surveillance results show that mosquitoes are carrying Kunjin virus, with activity of Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) virus, also likely during the wet season months," Ms Harrington said. A number of cases of the more common Ross River virus and Barmah Forest virus diseases have already been reported from the Kimberley and Pilbara regions this wet season.
"The risk of being infected and becoming unwell is low, but mosquito-borne illnesses can be debilitating and people should take sensible precautions to avoid mosquito bites," she said. "Infection with Kunjin virus can cause symptoms that are similar to Ross River virus disease, such as swollen and aching joints, fever and rash. However in rare cases, Kunjin can cause more severe symptoms which include headache, neck stiffness, fever, delirium and coma." Initial symptoms of MVE include fever, drowsiness, headache, stiff neck, nausea and dizziness and people experiencing these symptoms should seek medical advice quickly. In severe cases, people may experience fits, lapse into a coma, and could be left with permanent brain damage or die. "In young children, fever might be the only early sign, so parents should see their doctor if concerned, and particularly if their child experiences drowsiness, floppiness, irritability, poor feeding, or general distress." Ms Harrington said people most likely to be affected by Kunjin or MVE viruses were newcomers
to affected regions, such as babies, young children, tourists or new employees, but anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek medical advice quickly. "There are no specific cures or vaccines for these mosquito-borne diseases so it is very important that people take care to prevent being bitten by mosquitoes." Ms Harrington said controlling mosquitoes in most rural regions of WA was generally not possible because of the large size and inaccessibility of natural mosquito breeding habitat. People do not need to alter their plans to visit the Kimberley, Pilbara, Gascoyne or Murchison regions, but it is important to avoid mosquito bites by taking a few simple steps, such as; avoiding outdoor exposure from dusk and at night; wearing protective (long, loose-fitting) clothing when outdoors; applying a personal repellent containing diethyl toluamide (DEET) or picaridin to exposed skin or clothing; ensuring insect screens are installed and completely mosquito-proof: use mosquito nets and mosquito-proof tents; and ensuring infants and children are adequately protected against mosquito bites, preferably with suitable clothing, bed nets or other forms of insect screening.

Following funding of $687,329 from the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program, 21 Neighbouhood Model occasional child care centres are able to keep their doors open. The centres, which were previously part-funded by the Federal Government, were under threat of closure following cuts in the 2010 Federal Government Budget. Community Services Minister Robyn McSweeney said the State Government had recognised the importance of the service to
regional communities and had been funding the centres to stay open until the end of 2010. The new funding commitment will cover 100 per cent service provider costs to December 31, 2012, providing certainty to occasional care centres located across Western Australia. Centres affected are located in the Wheatbelt, Kimberley, Great Southern, South-West, Mid-West, Pilbara and Peel regions. “Thanks to Royalties for
Regions funding, child care service providers in regional and remote areas of our State will be able to support local families that rely on them to manage a work and family balance,” Mrs McSweeney said. “The Federal Government stopped their funding with no notification which would have left these service providers with no ability to operate if the State Government had not stepped in.” Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said 17 of the 21 services
were located in a town or community where no other child care options were available. “The Royalties for Regions funding will allow regional communities to keep their doors open to provide the quality care local families depend on,” Mr Grylls said. The Occasional Child Care Program run for children aged zero to six years was previously funded by the Federal and State governments (52 per cent and 48 per cent respectively).
Karratha Veterinary Hospital back in business As the mini tornado hit Karratha on 21 February, the Karratha Veterinary Hospital sustained significant damage to the building. However, despite the damage, the Karratha Veterinary Hospital is now open for business as usual. Dr Rebecca Penman explained that although the building was effected, fortunately no one was hurt and the building was safely evacuated. The roof sustained the most damage, eight
windows were smashed, the front sign was ripped from the building, the fence was broken, trees directly outside the hospital were broken and most cars parked in the designated spots were damaged. The inside of the hospital was generally safe apart from the broken glass from the windows. Luckily for the hospital, none of the equipment was effected, but the vets will only be doing limited house calls until the staff cars are fixed.
Dr Rebecca Penman is extremely grateful for the help and support that the State Emergency Service (SES) provided soon after the tornado hit. “We would really like to thank the lovely people at the SES for their incredibly quick response to boarding up our windows and getting everything in the clinic as safe as possible before the cyclone came through, the local hospital for letting us store all our cold goods (vaccines, antivenom and the like)” she
said. “Post-cylone we would like to thank Karratha Contractors for getting our roof repaired so quickly, the SES and Gay Henry for organising us generators to get our fridges back up and running until power was restored, the Shire of Roebourne for offering their assistance and helping us clear away all the debris and also a big thank-you to all our clients for being so patient with us while we got everything back up and running.”

Three developers short listed to transform Karratha The plan to develop Karratha into a vibrant regional city of 50,000 took a significant step forward after three major development companies were short listed to partner with LandCorp to deliver one of the most ambitious projects to date in the State Government’s ‘Pilbara Cities’ vision. Regional Development and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls announced that major Australian developers Lend Lease Development Pty Ltd; Australand Holdings Ltd; and Mirvac (WA) Pty Ltd had made the short list to develop up to five sites in the city centre and a premium coastal residential community of more than 2,500 dwellings at Mulataga. “The companies were chosen from a strong field of nine developers who
responded to LandCorp’s Expressions of Interest late last year,” Mr Grylls said. “Having development companies of this quality focus their interest in the region is an historical moment for the people of Karratha and clear evidence that the ‘Pilbara Cities’ initiative is succeeding. “They were chosen based on their demonstrated understanding of the complexities and importance of the project as well as their expertise and capacity to deliver.” The Minister said the project had been a high priority for the State Government since it announced its intention to establish Karratha as a major City of the North at the launch of the ‘Pilbara Cities’
initiative in November 2009. “At that launch, the State Government made it clear we intend to bring real and lasting change to the Pilbara,” he said. “By forging solid partnerships with private developers, the Government will harness significant additional capacity to realise the growth plans for the region.” Part of the broader City of the North Plan, the redevelopment in the centre of Karratha will create a new and ambient city core, featuring medium density commercial, retail and residential opportunities. At the same time, Karratha will be linked to the water with the first coastal residential estate to be developed on more than
160ha at Mulataga. Mr Grylls said he was encouraged by the level of national and international interest in the opportunity. “State Government Royalties for Regions has committed a billion dollars to the region over the next four years and the private sector can see there are huge opportunities in the NorthWest,” he said. “Fostering this new level of interest in the region is what ‘Pilbara Cities’ is all about.” The short-listed developers will advance to a Request for Proposal stage in the procurement process where they will work with LandCorp to refine project concepts. A preferred proponent is expected to be announced in September.

Keeping afloat at school As part of their education program, many children from Dampier Primary School teamed up this week and tested their skills to make a raft that would carry their crew. Run by Des Prizmic from the Dampier Camp School, the children were given the chance to build their own raft using timber, rope and PVC piping before testing them out on the Dampier Foreshore water. The teams made up of six students were initially shown how to make a suitable raft before being left to their own devices. Des Prizmic said that parents were invited to come along and make their own raft but were not allowed to help the students. “The children need to build them on their own” he said. “They need the option to fail or achieve, and they’ll learn a lot more through failing.” Des Prizmic said each
year the whole school participates in the activity, so as the students mature, they learn from their mistakes from previous years and their attitude changes. He said it forms great relationships between the students as they learn to work together and complete the task at hand. Teacher Suzanne Mitchell said it is an activity they engage in early in the year so that the relationships can be formed as school begins. “Some of these children are working with other children they don’t know yet,” she said. “It’s a wonderful activity for them to work as a team and cooperate to get the task done.” After building the rafts, the students and parents then took to the water, where they had to race each other with the aid of paddles. The activity is very well supervised.

Busy, busy for Karratha Family Centre It’s a busy time of the year for the Karratha Family Centre (KFC) as they prepare for events, upgrades and enrolments for term two of their School Readiness Program. The KFC based on Balmoral Road currently provide a School Readiness program aimed at children who will be attending kindergarten in the following year. Originally funded by the West Pilbara Community and developed by Early Years teacher Jo Wildman, the program offers children an insight into school life, in preparation to Kindergarten. The program was initiated in 2009, as the community expressed that there was a need for such a program and that it would address a gap in the communities services. The program was based on feedback from kindergarten teachers of reoccurring issues they tend to see from children in regional areas. “As many of the children in town do not
have extended families in town, they often spend much of their time with one parent” Jo Wildman said. “We have also seen with some of the children starting school a year later that their parents are struggling to offer structured and stimulating activities. “Many of the children attend such groups as playgroups but are not used to being in a structured environment. “The program addresses such skills as being able to take instructions from another adult, eating in a group, using manners, taking ownership and responsibility of their belongings and respecting quiet mat and story time. “The program focuses on social and emotional development such as separation anxiety, confidence building and making friends.” With an overwhelming response to the program last year they have now increased the number of sessions to accommodate

As well as the School Readiness Program, the KFC are preparing for the Pilbara Play Day where they will be hosting a store offering biscuit decorating and information on other services they provide such as playgroup venue hire and occasional care. The Humpty Dumpty Toy Library will also be available on the day for information; another service the KFC provide. The KFC Department for Communities building has also undergone exciting new upgrades
thanks to GBSC and carpet hotline to the meeting and venue hire room completed this week to increase its capacity. For more information on the KFC School Readiness Program contact the centre either by email admin@karrathafamilycentre.com.au, by phone on 91441740 via the website www.karrathafamily. com.au or simply pop into the office Tuesday, Thursday or Friday mornings between 9-1pm The KFC will be hosting an information stand in the Karratha Centro on 25/26 of March.

St Luke’s in Wonderland • Year 11’s Christine “Teenie” Carter was crowned Princess and Brennan Stewart Prince of the Ball

Traditionally, High School Balls are ‘a night to remember’, but the St Luke’s College Year 11 and 12 Ball held on Saturday, 26 February was also A Night in Wonderland. The school gym was covered in decorations resembling Alice’s Wonderland. A sea of red, black and white decorated the entire hall with the piece `de resitance`; the chequer board dance floor complete with giant chess pieces. Tables were set with red and white rose centre pieces, huge playing cards, cups, teapots and clocks were scattered around the walls. Year 12 student and committee member Jesse Parle-Brown said that they [student] had raised more than $1,500 last year working in the canteen to help with the funding of the decorations. “The Ball committee of 20 people started organising the event late Term One 2010,” he said.
“All our hard work really paid off, so much effort and time was put into it.”
Jesse said around three quarters of the decorations were hand made by the students in the art room at school, the rest were purchased. “We would spend time during recess, lunch, after school and during the school holidays to make sure everything was done right,” he said. As always the evening began with the “walk-in”. Hundreds of eager snap happy family and friends lined the entrance to the college whilst the outrageous, the funny and even vintage cars arrived with students in glam ball attire to make their entrance to the social event of the year. For the more creative arrivals, a golf buggie, mini moke and an ice cream van complete with the tell tale Mr Whippy music tinkling through the night air delighted onlookers.

The night was a huge success with 160 tickets sold.
All the students joined in to dance the night away and make the most of an evening they had worked so hard to create. The usual awards were given away at the end of the night. Year 11’s Christine “Teenie” Carter was crowned Princess and Brennan Stewart Prince of the Ball. For the year 12 Belle and Beau, Stephanie Hongell and Sam Neeling were chosen by their peers. Best Dancers of the night went to Year 12 Renae Munro and Year 11 Pierce Benfer. And Best Dressed went to Year 12 students Doug Karunakaran and Jake Branch. Everyone enjoyed the Night in Wonderland, unfortunately once the clock struck midnight it all ended but it was a night all of the students will never forget. Photos courtesy of Courtney Bertling

Pilbara TAFE has been forced to shut down its library from 2pm on Tuesday 1 March. Due to complications associated with the water damage to the Walkington Theatre, the TAFE/ Community library will be closed until further notice. Craig Holland, Pilbara TAFE’s Director of Corporate Services, explained that the college is in the process of engaging suitable contractors to assess the situation. “We are conducting a building condition report which will give us a better idea about the extent of the problem,” said Craig. “Unfortunately this means we have to close the library for at least two weeks as we await its recommendations.” “We’ll let everyone know when we’re able to open the library for business again. In the mean time people can return their borrowed items to the white Campus Administration building at Pilbara TAFE between the hours of 8.30am till 4pm from Monday to Friday.”

Win tickets to see British India Australian band British India have just announced their three month national tour which includes a stop off at Karratha. British India captured the attention of the independent music scene back in July 2007 with their acclaimed debut album Guillotine. Their popularity shot through the roof as songs such as Black and White Radio, Tie Up My Hands and Run the Red Light were played in venues
and festivals across the nation. The Melbourne based band have since toured around Australia playing an extensive amount of gigs and rocked at many festivals such as Big Day Out, Falls, Pyramid Rock, Southbound, Homebake and Splendour In The Grass to name a few. Ending 2010 with a UK tour where they believed they educated the poms about Australian rock, the boys soon returned to the studio to start
recording new songs for 2011. Just two weeks into the new year the band announced their three month tour to launch their brand new radio single ‘March into the Ocean’. The March into the Ocean tour will see British India travel length and breadth of the country, playing all major capital cities along with 18 regional towns. The boys will be playing live at the Karratha Tavern on Friday 18 March.

BLACK SWAN By Kane Tenadii-Hay The problem with any kind of adaption from a different source is some things simply don’t translate well. If you go along with a friend to see a film that is based on one of their favourite books, you’ll probably subject to them them furiously crying out “that wasn’t in the book!” every so often with www.pilbaraecho.com.au their fists clenched. If the attempt is too loyal to the source material, it will probably be dull; if it drifts in and out of focus, it will frustrate the audiences the film is intended for. However, every so often, you may come across something which merely considers the source material and eases it into a re-imagining - recently, a great example of this was released in the form of the teenage comedy Easy A, which shamelessly referred to what it was loosely based on without actually using the material as some kind of bible. I’m too proud to review something as girly as Easy A, however, so I’ve decided to turn the spotlight to Black Swan, a thriller that follows the general progression of the ballet Swan Lake, following a ballet dancer who is playing the lead role in said act. Already, the ingenious nature of the adaption is evident - it’s almost kind of cheeky, although such a term hardly fits the ( ) Please phone for opening hours Please phone for opening hours • ( 08 9185 5766 ( ) Please phone for opening hours • ( 08 9185 5766 extremely dark nature of the film Please phone for opening hours • ( (08) 9185 5766 at all: indeed, this is a very morose Kitcraft Kitchens the phone KitcraftPlease Kitchens the for opening hours • ( (08) 9185 5766 film, with a unrelentingly tense New showroom at Kitcraft Kitchens the New showroom at atmosphere. in the context of the film. Apart from this struggle, it also showcases an emerging rivalry between herself and Lily, another ballet dancer, who closely resembles (and thus suits) the identity of the Black Swan - there seem to be some attempts made to somehow sabotage Nina’s involvement, although I won’t go too far into that. As I mentioned before, the general mood of the film is very much of the darker side of things: Nina is very innocent, and the scenarios that take place in the course of the film affect her in very adverse ways, packing plenty of punch, thanks to Natalie Portman’s excellent work. Sometimes, however, it is just a little too miserable - none of the characters are particularly likable. Nina is a good lead, but she’s agonisingly naive; the director is a sleaze... At times, I found myself barracking for Lily, who is essentially the antagonist, so something has gone wrong here. It certainly shows, to those that have seen it, that it is the work of the director behind the extremely depressing Requiem for a Dream. For a thriller, the scares are rather cheap - it doesn’t take full advantage of the unsettling atmosphere, rather relying on jump-out scares. The movie could almost be used as a guide of the staples of most over-used film frights - you’ve got the close-up of closed eyes, something startling appearing the moment they open with a sharp string stab; deceiving reflections; rolling blackouts. Despite all this, I recommend the film simply because of its final act - I’m not going to go into it, of course, but it is certainly worth it. The flaws I’ve whined about are excusable either way, as they are simply minor hiccups spotting an otherwise fantastic film.

Would you eat ice cream made of breast milk? Breast milk ice cream was being scooped up by British customers last week after a London parlour used milk donated by a UK mum to make the “totally natural” treat. Victoria Hiley, 35, a mother of one from northern England, has already donated a litre of her breast milk to Icecreamists parlour for the dish it calls Baby Gaga, UK website Parentdish reported. “What’s the harm in using my assets for a bit of extra cash?” said Hiley, who responded to an advert for milk suppliers on another parenting website, Mumsnet. “What could be more natural than fresh, free-range mother’s milk in an ice cream?” The new parlour, based in London’s trendy Covent Garden district, pays £15 ($24) for every 10 ounces of milk and has already had 15 mothers become donors. Each lactating woman undergoes the same health checks used by the UK’s National
Health Service to screen blood donors. Matt O’Connor, 44, who runs Icecreamists, makes the dish by blending the breast milk with Madagascan vanilla pods and lemon zest. “No-one’s done anything interesting with ice cream in the last hundred years,” he said. “Some people will hear about it and go, ‘yuck,’ but actually it’s pure, organic, free-range and totally natural.” Source: news.com.au

ADVERTORIAL
Investor Confidence with Government-backed Housing Program Over the past 2 to 3 years, investors have been on a real roller coaster ride. Share markets dropped by over 30% in value, listed property trusts by over 50%. And whilst there has been some recovery, even this week we are seeing further instability in share markets due to the uncertainty of the weaker European economies and now the impact of instability in the Middle East and the impact it is having on oil prices. So, where is an investor to find a secure place to invest where the returns are attractive? Housing in Australia has shown resilience to the Global downturns and there was only a minor correction across the broader markets following the GFC. In most cases, the median house price adjustment was below 5% and has more than caught up since 2008. An interesting analysis by a leading merchant bank in 2009 showed that over a 10 year period, the total returns on residential property investment in Australia out-performed the total returns from the share markets. And here is the upside for investors – property did not have the big 30% crash like the share markets did. The last thing you want as an investor
is to have ‘shock’ in your investment portfolio when you are nearing retirement and becoming more dependent on the future income from your investments. When the Government introduced the National Affordability Rental Scheme they aimed at bringing investors back into the housing market with attractive tax incentives and tax free rebates. Backed by 10 year head leases and a 10 year Government program, the net cash flows from these investment properties is generally cash flow positive. Investors under the NRAS program can be confident in their investment as it is ‘bricks and mortar’ safe, the head lease is for 10 years and has indexation of the rental income plus the Government rebates are in place for 10 years and are also indexed. The combined benefit of tax breaks, rebates and a head lease means that the investor is far less susceptible to market changes. With cash flow positive returns, investors realise the capital growth at no cost to them
so it is a huge advantage over typical investment properties that require out of pocket ‘top ups’ from the investor. Greenfield Parkside Drive have a successful NRAS project in Kingaroy, located in the resources and energy triangle of the Bowen Basin, Surat Basin and Gladstone. Their Client Manager will be in Karratha and Port Hedland from March 15th to 18th so it is a good opportunity to get fully informed on how the NRAS program can deliver sustained results.

• Treats are always great to use when training a dog
The key to having a safe, well adjusted and trained animal is consistency and discipline. Bad behavior can seem “cute” at first, when the animal first arrives in the new home or is still in the puppy stages. Sadly it can very quickly lead to destruction and anti social behavior. As animals grow in size, jumping up, pulling at the lead, digging, and aggression can cause animosity within the household. An animal that displays this behavior is not a happy well adjusted animal. Dogs feel most secure when they are a member of your household but you are the “pack leader”. Feeding the animal after you’ve eaten, keeping them off the furniture, and reinforcing good behavior are all things to ensure a positive relationship. Negative reinforcement such a being placed outside or being ignored is important for when the dog displays bad or worrying behavior. By keeping your pet exercised, entertained (with toys, activity and socialization), and well trained, you are certain to have a lasting and happy friendship.

By Jenny Fox At the beginning of last winter, there were notable sightings of this bright little finch in our backyards, which was unusual as they are not normally seen in residential areas. It was hard not to miss the bright red faces of these little birds and distinctive song. The star finch was once found right across Northern Australia and down to NSW but reduced habitat through burning off, overgrazing and land clearing, has seen the dramatic decline in this. They are now only found along the coastal areas of the Pilbara, Kimberly, Northern territory and the tip of Queensland.
In the wild these birds are on the critically endangered list but are a popular aviary bird with many mutations. These little birds like stream side grasses and reeds in scattered eucalypt woodland, along with other grasslands where they feed on the seed heads of the tall grasses. They usually feed while hanging on the stems, only dropping to the ground to feed during the dry season when the seeds fall from the grass. Both parents share the incubation, brooding and feeding of young. They travel in small groups of up to 20 birds and after learning that these guys are endangered

I feel privileged to have had so many fly into my yard that particular year, as I’m sure those of you who remember these little birds will agree.

Protect yourself from the flu The Pilbara Health Network (PHN) is urging the local community to get immunised for the next bout of flu that’s expected to come our way this year. PHN CEO, Mr. Chris Pickett says the most effective way to protect our community against this year’s flu virus is to have as many people immunised as possible. “We don’t want the flu to be contagious but we definitely want the uptake of immunisations to catch on,” Mr. Pickett said. “We’re also reminding the local community that if you had a flu vaccine last year you still need to be boosted again this year to maintain your immunity. “The vaccine provides protection for about a year. “The impact of flu cannot be taken for granted given that complications from influenza kill more than 2500 Australians each year – that’s more than the average national road toll of 1500. “This disease is debilitating and causes pain, fever and headaches. “Every year these symptoms confine people to bed, others in hospital and cost a great deal in workplace productivity and to our local community. “The Northern Hemisphere flu season is still in full swing with high levels of infections and complications leading to hospitalisations and even deaths.
“The Australian flu season is only a matter of weeks away and it is time to think about protection. “The Australian Immunisation Handbook developed by the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) and endorsed by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), recommends annual influenza vaccination ‘for any person older than 6 months of age who wishes to reduce the likelihood of becoming ill with influenza’. “Influenza vaccination is strongly recommended for all adults aged 65 years and over; all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people over 15 years of age; people over six months of age with chronic illnesses; pregnant women; and residents of nursing homes, residential or other long term care facilities.” “If you are a carer, a health care worker or have close contact with people who are at higher risk, it is really important for you to be immunised as well. “If you are travelling, don’t forget to have your flu shot along with the other travel vaccinations,” Mr. Pickett said. So make an appointment with your General Practice and protect yourself and those you care for.

Rotary Bowelscan encourage people to get tested this March It’s one of Australia’s biggest killers — but your local Rotary Club is urging you to stop it in its tracks with $8 and a few minutes of your time. Bowel cancer is the country’s number one equal opportunity internal cancer – the most common internal cancer effecting both men and women – and is responsible for killing more than 4,000 Australians every year. But if it’s caught in time, 90 per cent of cases can be successfully treated. March is Rotary Bowelscan month, which is now in its fifth year of encouraging people to become more aware of the disease and to act annually to detect any problems. Under the program, people can purchase a Rotary Bowelscan kit for just $8 from participating chemists during March and send it back by mid-April to be tested. Karratha Rotary member Hlubi Kabane says the kits are now available from Pharmacy 777 on Sharpe Avenue and Pharmacy Help at Centro Karratha. The tests will pick up traces of invisible blood in the sample, which can indicate abnormal gastrointestinal bleeding. People are then advised to see their GP who can conduct further tests. Rotary Bowelscan spokesman
Jeff Cairns says the program has run successfully for four years. “When we launched in March 2007, we sold 5300 kits, which was a pretty good start,” he says. “By last year, that had grown to 12,079 which is fantastic — but there is still a way to go, and it would be fantastic to see that number top 15,000 this year. “We know that testing annually is one of the best ways to catch this cancer early. If you have bought a kit in the past, or you haven’t started your annual testing yet, this March is the time. Catch cancer before it catches you.” Over the past four years, Rotary Bowelscan kits have detected almost 200 positive results. Those positive tests have resulted in the diagnosis of at least 12 cases of bowel cancer and more than 40 cases of pre-cancerous polyps. The kits have also detected other conditions affecting the bowel and allowed early medical treatment. Mr Cairns says people need to get into a routine of checking yearly for bowel cancer, just as they do for other conditions like prostate or breast cancer. “It doesn’t take long and it doesn’t cost much — $8 is a small price to pay to save a life.”

Karratha woman to join World’s Greatest Shave The Leukaemia Foundation are hosting their annual World’s Greatest Shave between 10 - 12 March 2011. Each year thousands of people either shave or colour their hair for this worthy charity including Karratha local Sandia Navarro Fehrman who will be shaving her hair off at Centro Karratha on 12 March 2011 at 11am. Her hair will then be donated to a wigmaker. The World’s Greatest Shave is one of Australia’s biggest charity fundraisers. The money raised helps pay for free services to support patients and families living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and other related blood disorders.
Blood cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in Australia. Sandia Fehrman said that this is the first time she has done this, but since hearing about the fundraiser she believed it was worth doing and has been preparing herself for the past 18 months. “There are a few reasons why I decided to do it, firstly because I believe in what the Foundation stands for and think that when you live in the country and have no relatives in the city, Foundations like these are a blessing” she said. “Secondly, I have a choice to shave, and those going through chemotherapy, don't. “My hair will grow back
in no time, but cancer won't bring back your mother, your sister, your daughter, so why not do it? “Like mother Theresa said ‘We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean, but the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.’ “I am blessed to have great friends and supporters. “It will be a big change, I might have to learn how to hold my neck again, as I have too much hair. “I am starting to freak out, but looking forward to it!” The Leukaemia Foundation receives no funding from the Government and so rely on community support to fund their Vision to Cure and Mission to Care.
If you would like to support Sandia Fehrman then please donate online by searching her name on worldsgreatestshave.com.au and help her reach her goal of $5000, or head to the Karratha Centro on 12 March to watch her shave her hair off and make a coin donation.

• Author Nicky Arthur
an
Author helps new mothers Author of ‘How to Be a Happier Mum’, Nicky Arthur, brought her knowledge and experience to Karratha on 27 February as part of her ‘Happier Mums’ workshop tour of Australia. ‘How to be a Happier Mum’, published by New Holland in January and recently featured on The Today Show, is a practical guide for all mums (and parents) on how to live a happy and healthy life and be a positive role model for your children. On Thursday 24 March, Nicky Arthur hosted a very successful book signing session at Angus and Robertson and again at the Karratha Library on Friday 25 February. Continuing with her busy schedule, Nicky then offered a meditation and relaxation workshop and a ‘you can do it through yoga’ workshop on Saturday 26 February followed by the main ‘Happier Mums’ workshop held on the Sunday at All Seasons, Karratha. The workshop aimed at guiding attendees through the key tools and techniques to living a happy life. Delivered in an interactive format, Nicky motivated attendees, provided nutrition and exercise information, goal setting techniques, benefits of meditation and how to be a role model for your children. Nicky said it provided an understanding of how to cultivate
happiness and live a positive and fulfilled life.
“Sunday was really successful at All Seasons, it topped off the weekend nicely” she said.
“I had 20 people there and it was a really successful day where the mums, experienced relaxation techniques and motivation to become their absolute best through healthy mind and body. “The topics we covered were, why looking after yourself is so important, nutrition, Yoga, meditation, goal setting, adapting a positive attitude and tools to help them stay in the zone, time management and how to over come self defeating habits and mummy overwhelm.” “I personally loved being back in Karratha where I not only enjoy my work there but also the serenity of the landscape, and found it interesting to learn about the locals living there and how they cope with living in a remote town.” Following the success of the event, Nicky said her next goal, when she returns to Karratha, is to work with students from high schools and primary schools and teach them about self esteem and confidence which she feels would benefit both the students and parents. BOAT SOURCE
USA
Thanks to the strength in the AUD the opportunity has never been better to buy a quality boat from the US. Why use Boat Source USA instead of doing it yourself? • We get the best deals because we have access to so many quality boats at Wholesale Prices. • It costs less to use Boat Source than do it yourself. • We have trusted people in the US who personally check out your boat before you spend money on surveys. • We only deal with quality boats and walk away from lemons. • If you buy a single boat yourself you’re sending money to a complete strange who has no reason to do the right thing by you. They represent the seller. Better to deal with someone you trust. That’s why Boat Source USA is the exclusive Australian partner for Global Marine USA.
• You send your money to an Australian account. • If you buy direct it usually takes at least 2 months longer to get the boat on the water, this can be a very nervous time as you have really no idea what you’re getting. • We know all the costs involved and save you money every step of the way. • We get much better freight fares than individuals have access to. Generally the freight cost you are quoted does not include all freight expenses which need to be paid. • We take the stress out of buying a boat from overseas and save you money. • We act 100% in your best interest and treat your boat as we would our own. • Buyers are welcome to visit the US and tour their shortlist with a specialist. SOLD: 45 Sea Ray - 43 Riviera - 275 Boston Whaler - 252 Wellcraft Coastal - 245 Bayliner Cierra - 23 Pro Line

A popular year for the senior netball teams After a cyclone delay, the KNA Open trials were held on Thursday night with 18 new faces looking for senior teams turning up. Coaches from the five major clubs were in attendance to help grade players into the appropriate divisions. It was a really difficult job for both players and the panel as it is hard to play your best netball with people you've never met, all of different skill levels, as well as putting up with the humidity and insects, but everyone did their best. The coaches now have to go back to the club teams to see where they have vacancies before contacting the new players. KNA are very confident that they will find a team for everyone wishing to play netball in 2011. A reminder that the KNA Annual General Meeting will be held at the Karratha Entertainment Centre on 14
March at 7pm. Two representatives from every team must attend and all team nominations will be received on this night. For further information, please contact Tracy at kna. president@gmail.com. In other netball news, the KNA would like to give a huge thanks to Tanya MacAuley who has volunteered to update the website. It is such a useful tool to get information out to members and anyone interested in netball. You will be able to download team nomination forms, individual registration forms and get all the information regarding upcoming coaching, player & umpiring courses, links to Netball WA, etc. Fixtures will be put on the website when they become available in April as well. They hope to have www. karrathanetball.asn.au updated within the next
week so feel free to check it out. Don’t forget, Karratha Netball Association (KNA) has for many years identified junior local girls who show ‘talent, ability and dedication’ to netball to receive specialist coaching. Trials are undertaken and a Karratha Association Development Squad (KADS) chosen to compete in the Senior competition on Monday nights commencing 9 May 2011. If you are aged between 14 and 17 as at December 31, 2011 and would be interested in trialing for this team, please contact Kerry Jones at kjecec@yahoo.com. au or call 0414689261to register your interest. Registrations close on Saturday, 5 March 2011, the trial will be held at the Del Parker Netball Centre, Bulgarra at 6pm on Wednesday, 9 March 2011.

Wickham Warriors back to second place By Jo Angel
followed by B Brown.
u/13 Wickham Warriors Coach
The Warriors progressed well to be 4 wickets down for 66 at the 12 over drinks break.
On 25 February the U/13 Wickham Warriors travelled to Millar’s Well Oval Karratha to take on the Karratha Bushrangers. The Warriors needed to win this match to get back to 2nd spot on the ladder. They won the toss and elected to bat 1st, and continued their trend of losing an early wicket.
After the break the Warriors found runs hard to get and lost wickets at a steady rate as the Bushrangers picked up their game.
But B Pratt and A Cameron steadied the ship with a 17 run partnership.
L Johnson scored a handy 10 runs low down in the order, and was assisted by the returning B Pratt, who also made 10 and B Brown who finished on 23 n.o.
Pratt soon became the 1st retiree, and was
The Warriors were bowled out for 113 runs
in the 25th over, not quite what the team would’ve liked but at least they had a score on the board. When the game resumed after the innings change over, the Warriors were looking to bowl and field much better than the previous week’s game. The Warriors started well with a wicket in the 1st over and then a runout in over 2 effected by S Green and T Ridley. The wickets were shared amongst the bowlers up to the drinks break, and the Bushrangers were 6 wickets down for 32 runs
at the break. The last 4 wickets fell quickly after the drinks break and the Bushrangers were bowled out for 36 runs in over 15.
Karratha Golf Course is looking stunning at the moment after all the rain and careful tending by the Shire of Roebourne and the members. Word must have got out, as an incredible field of 83 golfers were ready for the shotgun start in last Saturdays 4 ball Ambrose Competition sponsored by the Life Members. As always, this is a great game to introduce new golfers to competition and last week proved to be no exception. In the novelty prizes, the nearest the pin prizes were won by Mark Smyth on hole 3, Skip Riding on hole 8 and Ben Tawhiti on hole 11.
A good performance from the Warriors that will put them back into 2nd spot on the WPJCA ladder.
Longest putt on hole 2 was Chopper Giles and on hole 13 Graham Munro.
few conniptions, and great banter in the clubhouse.
Top team on the day with a terrific 26.5 were Darren Beier, Chopper Giles, Dot Abbott and Vivien Kamen; (these two ladies did mention sore backs when they got back to the clubhouse with the load they had to carry.)
Karratha Country Club and Karratha Golf Club can be found off Searipple Road Karratha.
Third with 28.06 were Michael Bull, Wayne Haega, Alan Carty and Sidney Coetzer. Fourth were Owen Leece, Bodie Broun, Kev Clarke and Phil Kennedy with 28.69. It was an awesome day, with
Thanks to the Life Members for their generous prizes and thanks to the organisers and helpers who did a great job managing such a large field so smoothly.

Swimmers wash up for flights The Karratha Amateur Swimming Club (KASC) have just sent 25 of their swimmers to Perth to compete in the A Grade Country Pennants in Kambalda over the long weekend.
Each weekend, each member from the team attended at least one of the days to help out as well as a few dedicated swimmers from the club. Even though these members were not on the team they still came down to show their support. Four

allowing them to use the lawn area at the front of their business.
The event ran smoothly apart from business being a little slow on 19 February due to the rain, but the team are extremely pleased with the results.
Also a big thank you to the public for supporting them by bringing down your cars and dogs, your donation has been appreciated and has gone towards reducing the expense of the swimmers flights.
The KASC would like to thank Home Hardware for the use of their water and

New cricket facility for Karratha officially opens The evening of 2 March saw the official opening of the new Karratha Indoor Cricket Facility in Bulgarra, one of Karratha’s most popular team sports. With more than 350 registered players and fixtures stretching across five nights, the $300,000 Karratha Indoor Cricket Association (KICA) will now have priority facility access and a permanent, weekly hire agreement. Located adjacent to the Karratha Country Club, the new facility includes a synthetic cricket pitch, associated safety netting, special sports lighting and an ablution block. The KICA also contributed to construction through provision of an elevated umpire’s chair and a digital scoreboard. Councillor Nicole Lockwood said that the addition of the new indoor cricket facility compliments the existing sports and recreation opportunities already on offer at the Karratha Country Club. “The addition of the new cricket court will help
centralise sport to create a fantastic sporting precinct for the entire community to utilise,” she said. KICA President Simon Sanders said membership numbers were up on previous year’s figures and the association was predicting one of its biggest seasons yet. “The club is looking forward to moving to the modern, new facility,” he said. “We will also benefit from the more family- friendly location, with the option for players and families to enjoy a few drinks and a meal at the Karratha Country Club next door,” he said. Nicole Lockwood said that within the next 12 months another two major community sport and recreation projects are due for completion. These are the Bulgarra Sporting Precinct upgrades and soft diamonds placement and the Bulgarra Community Centre. “The Shire of Roebourne, through its Karratha: City of the
